Italy's Ischia named Best Island in the World

Ischia wins first place in annual travel + leisure survey..

Ischia has been named best island in the world by readers of the American magazine Travel + Leisure in the 2022 edition of The World's Best Awards, the annual international survey for top tourism destinations.

Readers are asked to rate islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness and overall value, with Ischia claiming the top spot with a score of 94.61.

  • The Myth of San Michele on the Isle of Capri

The survey cites Ischia's one-hour proximity to Naples and says there has been renewed international focus on the Italian island after it featured prominently in Elena Ferrante's novel My Brilliant Friend which was adapted into a HBO series .

Travel + Leisure readers were enamoured by Ischia 's "picturesque villages, thermal springs, and unspoiled beaches, which include Le Fumarole and its geothermally heated sand".

  • A guide to Sorrento

Luca D'Ambra, president of Ischia's hotel federation Federalberghi, told news agency ANSA that "these are the awards that make us proud and allow us to present our island to the whole world adequately", hailing Travel + Leisure as "a hallmark for global travellers".

In the 2022 top 10 rankings of best islands, Ischia is folllowed by the Maldives, Bali, Mìlos, Fiji, the Galapagos, Phuket, Dominica, Boracay and Cape Breton.

Ischia: Italy's island with the best beaches

By Luke Abrahams

Ischia Italy

We’re sorry to disappoint, but the secret’s finally out. For years the beauteous little volcanic island of Ischia managed to evade the spotlight thanks to its close, glitzy neighbour  Capri . With  anti-trend hotspots firmly on the travel agenda, that’s changing. What sets this isolated rock apart from the competition? It’s a question of substance and that ghastly overused word, “authenticity.”  Capri will always be the pretty one – the view from the Via Krupp and the Faraglioni as seen from La Fontalina are starlet gold – and the island of Procida took recent fame as Europe’s 2022 culture capital, but when it comes to a rugged, fuss-free throwback, Ischia wins hands down.

Here, fancy hotels are juxtaposed with scenes of Italian nonnas hanging out laundry, religious street parades and zooming Vespas. It’s wondrously idyllic. Unlike all the other islands in these parts, you don’t have to dig deep to find a dose of the real Italy . And now, finally, Ischia is finally having its moment. Ischia folk are notoriously proud of their homeland, so much in fact they’ve set up a conglomerate Ischia Is More to scream and shout about how great their island is and draw travellers in. With countless  wellness spas ,  natural thermal pools , smart hotels, lush vineyards and surreal gardens, Ischia is near the perfect chill antidote to the glitzy pull of  Amalfitana . Here are the best things to do, from eats to  hikes and all the bubbling hot springs in between.

Mezzatorre Hotel Thermal Spa

Where to stay

Mezzatorre Hotel

Say ciao to the hotel that put Ischia on the map. From the moment it re-opened under the uber-tasteful eye of Marie-Louise Sciò, it became a magnet to the Italian glitterati. Like its sister hotels  Il Pellicano in coastal  Tuscany and La Posta Vecchia in Ladispoli, The Mezzatorre is a throwback to la dolce vita at its finest. “I was blown away by the beauty of Ischia. It took my breath away. It is a magical island, a happy island, a true and fascinating island. Like Ischia there are few in Italy,” Schio tells us. Almost an ode to Slim Aarons, the hotel has everything you’d expect from an Italian escape: glittering waters, a thermal spa, craggy coast, chic restaurants, and beach umbrellas to die for. The celebrities – from J Lo to Angela and Margherita Missoni and influencer Sophia Roe – are all major fans, too. Perched on a cliff, the 16th-century Moorish-style former watchtower enjoys a quirky Wes Anderson-esque mise-en-scene with stunning panoramas of the Bay of Naples and the most sought-after suites the island has to offer. Restaurant La Baia, overlooking Mezzatorre’s private bay, guarantees the finest slice of Campania cuisine.

Address:   Mezzatorre Hotel, via Mezzatorre, 23/d, 80075 Forio NA, Italy

Albergo il Monastero

Albergo il Monastero

The concept of staying in a  hotel inside a castle is pretty cool, right? Ridiculously atmospheric and impeccably stylish, boutique chic gets a medieval schooling courtesy of Albergo il Monastero. Atop a craggy outcrop, vaulted ceilings and storied walls give the monastic digs that extra tinge of wow factor. Former owner Gabriele Mattera’s modern art pieces sprawl the walls and slick contemporary décor numbers help bring things into the 21st century. Rooms – once the cells of monks – are small and modest, and dare we say it, a little too on the Game of Thrones side, but they are refreshingly simple nonetheless. Its biggest asset comes courtesy of its restaurant, the dazzlingly romantic Cucina del Monastero. The views are heartstring-tugging and the food is light and tasty. Think Caprese salad, fresh bread baked straight from the oven and whatever the hot dish of the day is. Oh, and because you’re staying here, you basically have full reign and access to the castle once all the day tourists are kicked out.

Address:   Albergo il Monastero, Ponte Aragonese, 80077 Ischia NA, Italy

L'Albergo della Regina Isabella

Storied hotels don’t really come much better than this. Opened in 1956 by prolific Italian movie producer and publisher Angelo Rizzoli – a man who became transfixed by the island’s  thermal baths and paradisal position overlooking the bay –  L'Albergo della Regina Isabella once drew in cult Hollywood royalty for decades. Charlie Chaplin, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Clark Gable, and opera diva Maria Callas have all checked in over the years. Its tucked-away location, discretion, and stylish character, especially in the bedrooms, are to thank. Large rooms have majolica ceramic tile floors, all sorts of china nick-nacks and elegant furniture numbers against a backdrop of moody blue walls with curtains and cushions trimmed in shades of magenta velvet. Spa? Of course. The water here is dubbed “hyperthermal” because it flows out from the abyss up to a whopping 77 Celsius. Post dip, all sorts of treatments are on offer from mud baths to massages and dermo cures that will make you feel 20 years younger. There’s also an excellent Michelin-starred restaurant that serves gourmet food and local wines.

Address:   L'Albergo della Regina Isabella, Piazza Santa Restituta, 1, 80076 Lacco Ameno NA, Italy

Castello Aragonese

Castello Aragonese

You might recognise this one from the blockbuster flick Cleopatra . While it remains a firm tourist hotspot thanks to its starring Hollywood role, don’t make that put you off. More than just a castle, this fortress was first built all the way back in 474BC by Syracusan tyrant Gerone I. Much of what you see today survives from the 1400s, raised from the ground by King Alfonso of Aragon who had a thing for bastions, causeways and ramps. Beyond its fortress lies an entire borgo filled with cutesy terrace cafes (the highest with views of Capri) and bars and the odd shop. Elsewhere on the grounds, there’s the rather ghastly and grisly Museo delle Torture home to a collection of medieval torture instruments and the Cattedrale dell’Assunta where Giotto-inspired frescoes run riot in the 11th-century crypt.

Ischia Ponte view of the Aragonese Castle

Boat around the island

You are on an  island , so naturally, the best way to see it is by boat. Several charters offer all sorts of experiences around the coast that pack in all the sights. If you want to support local, give Joseph and Marco of Giosymar Ischia Charter a call. A family business, they’ll whizz you around all the hotspots pointing out landmarks, restaurants the locals love, hidden coves, genuinely secret beaches, thermal pools and cutesy fishing villages.

Take a dip in the thermal pools

Ischia is Italy’s natural spa island. For centuries people have been flocking to its 103 bubbling volcanic springs to help all kinds of nasty ailments from rheumatism to gout. In fact, the waters here are so seriously good for you that even the Italian public health service directs patients to the island’s therapeutic springs. For remote and raw, spiral on down to Via Sorgeto Natural Hot Spring. It’s rustic, and seculded cove is the star of the show and wades in all sorts to splash headfirst in its healing rock pools, heated from all the nearby bubbling volcanic activity. For something bigger, Spiaggia di Citara Beach packs in the crowds thanks to the Poseidon Thermal Gardens. It’s lido-chic meets wellness with a bit of boutique shopping in between. Others worth checking out are Negombo Hydrothermal Park (12 pools and lush gardens) and Sorgeto, Ischia’s most famous self-care spot where the pools bubble up to 37 degrees year-round. Not far from Serrara Fontana in the shadow of the island’s volcanic cliffs, you’ll stumble on the Cavascura baths, a lovely spot where the thermals are hewn out of the rock. They are so good, in fact, that they have been in continuous use since the days of ancient Rome .

Giardini La Mortella

Giardini La Mortella

Because plants =  wellness . A downright odyssey of greenery festoons every single nook, crack, crevice and bolt imaginable in this stonker of a beautiful giardino, once the former home of British composer William Walton and his Argentine wife, Susan. Inspired by all the fragrant, grandiose Moorish gardens of southern Spain’s Alhambra Palace, it is to many, the finest botanical spectacle in all of Italy thanks to its designer, the once famed Russell Page. Mammoth in size, you can easily spend an entire afternoon traipsing about the place. Tropical spruces and perennials make up much of the lower gardens, while Mediterranean plants and ponds wow in the uppers. Walton's wife is commemorated in a small museum on the way up, and it’s well worth joining the line for a peek of his mightily impressive monument perched at the tippy-top of the garden (his ashes are here, and the views of Forio and the coast are as expected, astounding). La Mortella often hosts chamber-music recitals and concerts, too. Tip: book well in advance.

Hike Mount Epomeo

You don’t have to be a fitness nut to hike it to the top of Ischia’s main attraction, the mighty Monte Epomeo. An ascent of the island’s towering volcanic peak is practically non-negotiable, not just because it’s one to get check marked, but mostly because the views from its summit are downright mind-blowing – the entire stretch of the Amalfi Coast and the bay of Naples . The quickest way to climb it is from the village of Fontana. The path is roughly 2.5km in length and weaves up paved roads, tracks and a steep path. If you don’t fancy going it alone, hit up a private tour. Local guide Marianna Polverino of Ischia Hiking Tours is one of the island’s best and will show you everything from vineyards to cool volcanic vents and all the pretty towns en route.

Procida Italy

Take a day trip to Procida

Until it became last year’s European culture capital, Procida remained a well-kept secret for locals and film stars (Gina Lollobrigida, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor…) for yonks. The island is small and as a result, is refreshingly quiet. Pilgrimages generally start with a walk up to the ancient citadel. Here you’ll get one of the best views of the Marina di Corricella (sea of colourful houses included) and have the chance to explore the pretty medieval village of Terra Murata. Palazzo d'Avalos and the crumbling 16th-century Abbey of San Michele are well worth a visit. Come August, the town square is alive with traditional markets, cutesy Fiat cinquecentos and buzzing festivals. Insta-walks along the waterfront are a must to see bobbing fishing boats, patio restaurants, narrow Vespa-choked roads, and come dusk, colour-mad picture-perfect sunsets over the bay. Da Mariano is the hot ticket eat. The laidback seafood restaurant is hugely popular with locals who flock here to gorge on stuffed calamari and spaghetti alle vongole. The fish, including swordfish, is jumping fresh, and you eat looking out over the sea.

Go wild in the vineyards

Ischia isn’t really known the world over as a go-to wine destination, which, in our eyes, is utter sacrilege. There are hundreds of vineyards dotted all about the island that grow top-notch indigenous grapes – Biancolella and Forastera white grapes and Guarnaccia and Per'e' Palummo (Piedirosso) red grapes especially – and thanks to all that volcanic soil, the bottles corked here are some of the tastiest Campania has to offer. Check out bottles from Tommasone, a five-generation family business that’s been producing wine for over 250 years; Cenatiempo, another family affair where Biancolella vines string out some deliciously crisp glasses of Kalimera (a lovely white); and Casa D’Ambra, a vineyard nestled inside a natural amphitheatre overlooking the bay of Citara.

Acropoli Bar at San Montano Resort Spa

Where to eat and drink

Acropoli Bar at San Montano Resort & Spa

The hotel up in the sky has “date night” written all over it. Sister to buzzy Amalfi outcrop Borgo Santandrea, the laidback terrace dishes out all the wow factor with stunning bay views that look out to all the island’s neighbours and beyond. The décor is a little blast from the past, but there are plenty of love seats to caress, fancy cocktails included. The pizza is excellent and melts in your mouth, too.

Address:   Acropoli Bar, Via Nuova Montevico, 26, 80076 Lacco Ameno NA, Italy

Ristorante Indaco at hotel Regina Isabella

Ristorante Indaco at hotel Regina Isabella

You’ll need to book early for this one because it’s the place to go for starry-eyed loved-up couples to go and be seen in. Chef Pasquale Palamaro serves up Michelin-approved dishes to gourmet palettes year-round. The menu is seafood-heavy, and there’s a particular passion for plating up classics with an Ischia-like spin where local ingredients trump Campanian go-tos. It’s all too delicious.

Address:   Ristorante Indaco, Piazza Santa Restituta, 1, 80076 Lacco Ameno NA, Italy

La Scanella, Sant’Angelo

Here’s the spot to go if you’re in need of a serious digital detox. Set deep within the island’s craggy coast via a rather perilous but fun natural staircase, La Scanella is where introverted extroverts head to chill, book in one hand and a spritz in the other. Its remoteness is its charm. There’s no phone signal down here whatsoever, and the club enforces a pretty strict silent bathing area where only the crashing waves break the sound waves. Post a dip in the salt pools, and treat your taste buds to lunch with a sea view. Fresh fish – it really is the definition of the word – salads and pasta in the pan are served here, all to the tune of a foodie mantra that preaches simple is best.

Address:   La Scanella, Via Scannella Mare, 1, 80075 Panza, frazione di Forio d’Ischia NA, Italy

Umberto A Mare

Umberto A Mare

It’s all very arty and intimate at this cute little spot in Fori. Request to sit terrace-side for breezy seascapes. The food is typically Mediterranean, from pasta to slick, kaleidoscopic salads and a wine list that exceeds 500 bottles. If you can stand up straight after all the booze, waltz through the hotel and check out all the fine work from local artists, sculptors, and photographers.

Address:   Umberto A Mare, d'Ischia, Via del Soccorso, 8, 80075 Forio NA, Italy

La Vigna Di Alberto

Owner Franco di Scala is the third-generation restauranteur behind this historic spot that has brought in punters for decades. Perched up in the hills near Barano, the food is simple and minimal…intentionally, we’re told, to let all of the timeless Italian flavours shine. Expect a lot of seafood, meat and veggies, plus creamy risottos and some seriously good portions of perfectly cooked al dente pasta.

Address:   La Vigna Di Alberto, Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, 87, 80070 Barano D'ischia NA, Italy

Ristorante La Grotta Epomeo

Ristorante La Grotta Epomeo

Pure drama does not get much better than this spot set high above the heavens on Mount Epomeo. A great lunch spot, the whole thing is carved into a tufa on the peak of the mountain and is roughly a three or so hour hike from Sant’ Angelo. Food is as local and fresh as it gets with all the usual suspects from fish to pasta and salads. Wine is a treat, as are the panoramas that stretch all the way out to Maronti beach.

Address:   Ristorante La Grotta Epomeo, Via Epomeo, 21, 80070 Serrara Fontana NA, Italy

La Bella Napoli

If you’re done with all the fancy stuff and just want something down-to-earth and casual, La Bella Napoli is the spot to know. Like most things on Ischia, it's a buzzy affair plonked just off the port of Forio. There is lots on offer, but let’s face it, we came here for the pizza and homemade cookies.

Address:   La Bella Napoli, Unit 22, Bow Triangle Business Center, Eleanor St, London E3 4UR

Ischia Travel Guide

Discover the best things to see and do in our ischia travel guide….

Ischia, the charming ‘Green Island’ affectionately known as the Isola Verde, is situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Naples, Italy.

Ischia is a small paradise offering an abundance of natural springs, pristine sandy beaches, vibrant towns with abundant shops, and delectable local produce infused in every dish.

Unlike its more exclusive neighbour, Capri, Ischia is accessible to everyone via a short ferry ride from the Port of Naples, making it a beloved destination for both locals and travellers seeking a rejuvenating escape.

This volcanic island is one of Europe’s largest natural spas, drawing visitors since the 8th century BC. The Greeks, who first named the island Pithecusae, recognized the supernatural powers of its thermal springs, setting the foundation for centuries of therapeutic tradition.

From the Romans introducing public thermae to its allure for European nobility in the 1700s and later artists and intellectuals, Ischia has held a special place in the hearts of many.

Uncover the island’s finest restaurants, hotels, and attractions with our Ischia travel guide, helping you immerse yourself in the rich history and natural beauty of Ischia.

What to see and do in Ischia

1. take a boat trip.

Embark on a trip around the circumference of Ischia or set sail to the smaller nearby island of Procida. Ischia Seadream offers daily voyages from the town of Forio including a unique experience on a ‘gozzo’ – a traditional wooden fishing boat found around the south of Italy.

Porto di Forio (in front of the town hall) Porto d’Ischia (right bank)

2. Hike up Mount Epomeo

Head to the village of Fontana to start your 50-minute trek to the highest peak on the island and be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views.

The walk takes you through some beautiful woodland before a final climb up the rocky path to the summit. Make sure you wear appropriate footwear – flip-flops are not recommended!

3. See Poseidon’s Thermal Gardens

Poseidon’s Thermal Gardens are the most-visited thermal gardens on the island, with more than 20 pools, a private beach, a restaurant and more. The facilities are immaculately kept and there is so much to try out that you can take the day at your own pace.

Via Giovanni Mazzella, SNC, Baia di Citara, Forio d’Ischia

4. Go on an underwater adventure with ANS Diving Ischia

The crystal clear waters surrounding Ischia are ideal for a spot of snorkelling and scuba diving. You can also visit the Green Cave and the Wizard’s Cave, including the archaeological site of the Ninfeo Rock along the Roman walls submerged around the Aragonese Castle.

Via Girolamo Rocca, 13 – Ischia Ponte

5.  Don’t miss the Ischia Film Festival

The Aragonese Castle is the perfect setting for this annual celebration of cinematography in late June. Enjoy outdoor screenings, exhibitions, and meetings with the authors throughout the week. Feature films and documentaries can be enjoyed regardless of your language level as they tend to focus on locations.

6. Visit the Archaelogical Museum of Pithecusae

Located in Lacco Ameno, in the Villa Arbusto, which was previously the residence of Italian film producer and publisher Angelo Rizzoli, the museum testifies to the ancient origins of the island.

The most famous object on display is Nestor’s Cup, a wine cup with an epigram that is the oldest known example of Greek writing, dating back to the 8th century BC.

7. Check out the Chiesa del Soccorso

This delightful little church is a must-see. Sitting on top of a wide double staircase with the open sea below and mountains behind, it stands like a white beacon on the island perimeter. Its ancient origins date back to 1350 when it was an Augustinian monastery, but it was restructured in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Where to stay in Ischia

1. punta chiarito resort.

Via Sorgeto, 87 – Forio

Tom Alberto Bull stayed at this resort for his travel blog, 48 hours in Ischia . It’s a beautifully situated 4-star resort isolated on a cliff edge overlooking the town of Sant’Angelo on one side and the Baia di Sorgeto on the other.

Punta Chiarito is run by three generations of the same family who supply their restaurant with ingredients sourced from their own farm on the island. The spring water pool features a spectacular 40-metre tunnel dug into the rock.

2. Hotel Zaro

Via Tommaso Cigliano, 132 – Forio

Situated along the coast between the Giardini La Mortella and the bustling town of Forio, this 4-star hotel is an ideal base for exploring some of the best attractions on the island.

It features three pools, a sun terrace, and direct access to one of Ischia’s finest beaches at San Francesco Bay.

3. Sorriso Thermae Resort

Via Provinciale Panza, 311 – Forio

Take in views of the Citara Bay and the Poseidon Thermal Gardens from this stunning family-run 4-star resort and spa. It has five thermal pools with 24-hour access, plus live music and dancing every night of the week throughout the summer months – the perfect hangout for night owls.

4. Hotel Continental Terme

Via Michele Mazzella, 70 – Ischia

With the tagline ‘An island within the island’, this Mediterranean-style complex has enough facilities to keep you occupied without ever having to leave the premises. There’s a refined restaurant, a piano and poolside bar, plus a family playground, tennis courts, and gardens.

It also has the advantage of being within close proximity of the main port and the Aragonese Castle.

5. Hotel da Maria

Via Cartaromana, 79 – Ischia

Located in Ischia’s Cartaromana Bay with access to a private beach and views of the Castello Aragonese, this 4-star hotel is the perfect choice for a romantic getaway. Take advantage of the taxi-boat service direct from the port to simplify your travel arrangements.

Where to eat in Ischia

1. la grotta da diore.

Via Epomeo, 21 – Serrara Fontana

If you do decide to take a hike up Mount Epomeo, you will be able to take full advantage of the panoramic views from this little gem dug into the rock face. La Grotta da Fiore is ideal for a spot of lunch. Here the emphasis is on local dishes – including the ever popular rabbit stew – served politely and with the minimum of fuss.

2. Girarrosto da Nicola

Via Baiola, 1 – Forio | +39 081 997954

For another delicious meal on a budget, grab some rotisserie chicken, roast potatoes and a parmigiana, all cooked in a wood fire oven, and take it down to the seafront. It’s not unusual to see a (disorderly) queue forming outside this takeaway joint, so head down before it all sells out.

3. Ristorante Core a Core

Via Marina, 15 – Forio

Core a Core is a recently opened restaurant in Forio which has good food and friendly and accommodating staff. You can enjoy a free glass of prosecco on your arrival as well as a personal welcome from the chef. Specialities include tuna tartare and octopus ragù – but do save room for dessert.

4. Zio Peppe

Via Leonardo Mazzella, 140 – Ischia

Expect a warm and friendly welcome from this traditional family-run restaurant serving big portions out of two large wood fire ovens. Popular with tourists, the locals help to keep it busy even during quieter periods of the year, with many using it for birthday celebrations. Within walking distance of Ischia Port.

5. Ristorante Tiramisu

Via Porto, 26 – Ischia

Take a seat on one of the tables overlooking the port and watch the world go by. Ask to see the catch of the day and enjoy some of the best fresh fish on offer. Italian dishes with a modern twist.

Getting to Ischia

  • BY PLANE Naples international airport is the closest on the mainland, and there is a regular bus service taking you directly from there to the ferry port.
  • BY CAR Cars and mopeds are readily available for hire once you arrive in Ischia Porto.

Europe is always a good idea., a long weekend on ischia, italy: travel & leisure’s “best island in the world”.

travel and leisure ischia 2022

I love Italy. My husband is an Italian citizen. I have been to Italy many, many times.  However, Ischia was never on my radar until we planned a last minute trip this Summer and were looking for a sunny spot without too many American tourists.  I landed on Ischia, not knowing much about it and thinking that it even may be “too Italian” (i.e. no fast internet or English) for a short stay. We decided to give it a go and spent a lovely five days in Ischia.

travel and leisure ischia 2022

Beautiful Ischia Porto.

Upon returning to the States, however, it seems that others have also recently discovered Ischia and are flocking there. In fact, Ischia was recently featured in CNN and named Travel and Leisure’s “ Best Island in the World .” Honestly, shocking. I don’t agree that Ischia is the “best island in the world,” but its pretty great, especially in the touristy Amalfi area. A little taste of Italy without the American tourists, at least for now. This article shares some information on Ischia and our trip, which was difficult to find online (although that’s probably changing!). Go now if you want a “Capri” without all the tourists and sky high prices.

GORGEOUS ISCHIA ISLAND

Ischia is an Italian island located ∼30 kilometers off the coast of Naples in the Tyrhennian Sea, very close to Procida Island (Europe’s 2022 Capital of Culture ). The fast ferry from Naples takes 1 hour, as does the ferry between Ischia and the very famous Italian island of Capri. In other words, while not as famous as its neighbors, Ischia is basically the Amalfi area for tourist purposes.

travel and leisure ischia 2022

Ischia on a map, its the small island next to Napoli!

Once on Ischia, three main towns serve most tourists: Ischia Porto (or “Ischia”), Forio, and Lacco Ameno. We stayed in Ischia Porto because it is the easiest to reach and has a lot of bars, restaurants, and shops to keep one busy. A public bus runs between towns and it seems easy enough to use. Taxis are also readily available, but not inexpensive (there is no Uber or Lyft, etc.). A rental car would be helpful if you plan to tour around the island.

Gorgeous Ischia.

HOW TO REACH ISCHIA

The only way to reach Ischia is via ferry from Naples or the surround area, inclding Procida, Capri, or the Amalfi Coast. Alilaura runs frequent ferries, as do a few other companies. We took the ferry from Naple’s Beverello port, very close to Naples Castle. We arrived at the port just over an hour in advance and purchased tickets on the spot for approximately €30 per person with luggage. Note, on some ferry lines, including Alilaura, you must pay extra for luggage. While not always necessary, advance reservations are probably not a bad idea in high season (the summer).

travel and leisure ischia 2022

Some of the ferry ticket offices at Napoli Beverello.

We boarded with our luggage about 15 minutes prior to departure. All seats are indoors and we just picked the first two that we saw. Masks continue to be mandatory in Summer of 2022. As for our large checked luggage, the staff takes it upon boarding and stores it at the front of the boat. We picked up our luggage on the way off the boat. We kept our carry on luggage (small backpacks) and stored them under our seat. The ferry ride was easy and gorgeous (try for a window seat!), and we got off at the first stop, Ischia Porto. The ferry continued to Forio after we departed.

A brief look inside our ferry.

In leaving Ischia, we boarded at the same spot but the ticket office is across the street in a small store front. Be sure to get your tickets ahead of time; the line backs up at ferry time and despite the lines, staff does not move any faster. You cannot buy tickets on the ferries.

Leaving Ischia. Tickets are sold across the street from this dock.

If you want to take your car to Ischia, you will need to use a car ferry, which depart from a different Naples port than Beverello. You will also need to confirm that you can take your car on to Ischia – they have strict rules about what cars can be brought on the island.

WHERE TO STAY IN ISCHIA

Ischia has loads of accommodations, from hotels to AirBnBs, to local pensions. We found that the accommodations generally were more Italian-style than American, and most of the websites we perused were largely in Italian. We opted to stay in Ischia Porto because it was the easiest and we found a lovely hotel that seemed to have decent wifi – Hotel Villa Durrueli Resort & Spa.

Hotel Villa Durrueli Resort & Spa is located within walking distance of the touristy part of Ischia Porto. Like many hotels on the island, it boasts a thermal spa, as well as a pool and a rooftop bar and restaurant. We stayed in a room on the third floor with a lovely little balcony over looking the pool and Aragonese Castle – it was lovely! Our room was decent sized and the bathroom was fine; no complaints.

The somewhat small bed.

Aside from our cute room, the pool was sizable with lots of space. The hotel rented towels to use daily for €2 per towel.  The in-house “spa” was just off the pool area and included a very shallow hot pool, a very warm sauna, a full size indoor pool that was not so warm, and a very cold pool. We used it one day but found the outdoor pool to be more fun for us.

Hotel Villa Durrueli Resort & Spa also provided complimentary breakfast everyday that was fantastic! Do not skip the breakfast pastries or white cheese with specks of red if you stay at Hotel Villa Durrueli Resort & Spa.

ACTIVITIES WE DID ON ISCHIA

A boat tour around ischia with alcione boat tours.

Our favorite thing that we did on Ischia was to take a boat ride around the entire island with Alcione boat tours! We booked in advance online and met the boat in Forio. The boat ride was incredible: gorgeous views, pretty free flowing drinks, a great crowd, and a totally delicious lunch prepared by the captain’s wife. My only note is that the boat caters to mostly Italian tourists and there is not much English on the boat. We didn’t care and still had a blast, but others who don’t speak Italian may feel a bit isolated.

A SPA DAY AT NEGOMBO SPA.

Another popular thing to do in Ischia is visit one of Ischia’s many, many thermal spas. Seriously, the thermal spas are everywhere (even in our hotel). We decided to visit Negombo because it is rated as one of the “nicer” ones. Our back up was Poseidon, which we saw from the water, is huge, and is also supposed to be quite nice.

travel and leisure ischia 2022

Map of Negombo!

Parco Negombo is a huge outdoor spa with a beach! We spent a full day at Negombo, from about 10:00 – 15:30, using many of its warm and regular temperature pools. We skipped the beach because we ran out of time, but it looked very nice. Definitely hit a thermal pool or spa – its a unique thing to do on Ischia.

CASTELLO ARAGONESE D’ISCHIA

Another very popular activity on Ischia is to walk up to and explore Castello Aragonese d’Ischia. Right in Ischia Porto, tourists can apparently walk to the top for excellent views of Ischia. We skipped the castle due to time constraints and the fact that we had a great view from our hotel room. But, it did seem like an interesting activity.

In terms of other activities, I am sure there is loads more to do on Ischia, but these were our favorites. Tell me about those that I missed in the comments!

WHERE WE ATE & DRANK IN ISCHIA PORTO

Ischia boats loads of restaurants, from Michelin starred to grab-and-go. We were pleased with all of our, mostly seafood-based, food. Popular restaurants book up in the high season. I booked in advance via email. Here are some of the places that we ate and enjoyed.

RESTAURANT DORTAS

Restaurant Dortas is a casual pizza restaurant in Ischia Porto, which also offers non-pizza options. Obviously, I went with the pizza, and it was very good! Dortas as packed with locals when we visited. Reservations recommended on the weekend and during the summer.

Excellent eggplant pizza at Dortas.

DANÌ MAISON

Danì Maison holds two Michelin stars and is located on a hill just outside of the main area of Ischia Porto. We opted for the tasting menu, which was huge, delicious, and had a lot of seafood. Reservations necessary, but I was able to get them the week of our dinner. I’ll be doing a separate post about this crazy dining experience!

APERITIVO AT HOTEL DURRUELI

Hotel Durrueli honestly had an absolutely fantastic rooftop aperitivo. While the drinks were a bit more expensive than other places, stuff continuously brought out food during Aperitivo: olives, nuts, chips, meat, cheeses, octopus, and even pieces of smoked salmon. We could have easily made a meal out of just the aperitivo.

travel and leisure ischia 2022

Spritz at Aperitivo.

travel and leisure ischia 2022

Aperitivo at Hotel Villa Durrueli. More cheese & salmon followed. Honestly, enough for a meal.

Porto 51 is a cool bar located on Ischia Porto’s waterfront. I had read about Porto 51’s aperitivo, and we ended up here twice! While I never experienced “aperitivo”, the drinks at Porto 51 are actually very good and interesting. This is a good “going out” spot in Ischia Porto. We also had a casual dinner here one night. The food was ok – what I would describe as Italian bar food. Come here for drinks, have dinner elsewhere!

Dan’s open-faced sandwich with sausage, cheese, and pesto!

travel and leisure ischia 2022

I, surprisingly, opted for a sandwich rather than one of the pizza looking dishes. The sandwich was actually very good with quality ingredients. But, there is better food in Ischia Porto!

L’ALTRA MEZZANOTTE

Another restaurant that we visited with high marks was L’Altra Mezzanotte, located on the waterfront a few doors down from Porto 51! L’Altra Mezzanotte is a popular spot with many tables booked in advance, including ours (I emailed a few days prior)! L’altra Mezzanotte serves fresh seafood, in addition to pizza made in its wood fire oven. We started with fresh tuna tartare, followed by squid for Dan and a pizza for me. Our meal ended with lemoncelle and melloncello, compliments of our new friends that we met at dinner! Thanks, D-nice and Haley!

PRACTICALITIES FOR VISITING ISCHIA

  • Like mainland Italy, Ischia uses the Euro. ATM machines are easy to find in the main towns. Credit cards were pretty readily accepted. Smaller vendors may prefer cash.
  • Ischia is frequented by Italians, unlike its more touristy Amalfi Coast neighbors. English is widely spoken and signs and menus usually have an English option, but English is not as common as elsewhere in the area.
  • In visiting boats, beaches, spas, etc., bring your own towels, etc. Some places rent them for €€ but not everywhere.
  • A car or scooter rental is the easiest way to get around the island. That being said, there is also a public bus and pricey taxis. There is no Uber on the island as of writing.
  • Ischia has a lot of island specialities, be sure to try them as you may not find them easily on the mainland.
  • Be sure to try the Melloncello. While you can find Melloncello throughout Southern Italy, it was particularly good on Ischia!
  • Make reservations for restaurants and thermal spas during the summer to ensure the best times and seats!
  • As I mentioned above, don’t sleep on Aperitivo hour!
  • So closed to Napoli, don’t miss the pizza on Ischia. Its almost as good as that in Napoli!
  • Don’t squeeze in a trip to Ischia in 1 day, stay a couple nights to get a good feel for the island. You’ll miss too much on just a “day trip.” I could have stayed another week!

STEAL OUR TRIP

Hotel Durrueli Resort and Spa : Via Traversa Mirabella, 27  I schia. English spoke by most of the staff.

Alcione Boat : We did the Ischia boat tour with lunch for about $75 USD per person. We booked via Trip Advisor .  I highly recommend booking in advance; this tour sells out often according to the owner.

The Negombo Spa : Via San Montano, Lacco Ameno. Open daily 8:30 – 19:00. Bring sandals, bathing suit, towel, and robe if you don’t want to rent/buy these things at Negombo. We rented a locker, towel, and robe for the for about €10 per person, with an additional €10 per person deposit that was returned when we returned the towel and robe.

Restaurant Dortas : Via Edgardo Cortese, 7, 80077 Ischia NA, Italy. Open nightly for dinner from 19:00 – 23:00. Reservations recommended during high season. Casual.

Danì Maison : Via Montetignuso, 4, 80077 Ischia NA, Italy. Upscale restaurant experience. You’ll feel uncomfortable in too casual of attire. Dan wore khakis and a polo and I wore a dress. Reservations necessary.

Porto 51 : Via Porto, 51, 80077 Ischia NA, Italy. Open daily from 18:00 – 3:00.

Ristorante L’Altra Mezzanotte : Via Porto, 71, 80077 Ischia NA, Italy. Open daily for lunch and dinner, closed between meals. Casual. Reservations recommended in high season.

10 things to do in Ischia, the world's most beautiful island

Mara Noveni

Travel tips for ischia.

travel and leisure ischia 2022

Did you know that according to the ranking drawn up by the readers of the international magazine Travel & Leisure , in 2022, Ischia appears to be the most beautiful island in the world , facing paradisiacal islands such as the Maldives , Bali and the Galapagos Islands? To decide the success of this place to visit in Italy were the evaluations based on the tourist experiences, the natural attractions, the sea, the beaches, the food, and the friendliness of the inhabitants. So, let's discover 10 things to do in Ischia, the world's most beautiful island .

© iStock/todamo

Ischia is a volcanic island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea , north of the Gulf of Naples . Its history is covered by a series of seismic events, which over time have changed its shape and have often caused displacements of the inhabited areas. It is the third largest Italian island by population, with about 60,000 inhabitants, which during the summer reaches 300,000.

The island of Ischia offers everything you could want from a holiday at any time of the year  between sea, spa, mountains, sport, culture and entertainment. Even if modernity and globalization have slightly changed the face of this island, we can still catch fragments of peace, emotions and suggestions by visiting every corner. As in the fishing villages, you can admire the colour of the sea and the light at sunrise and sunset . The light of Ischia is warm, enveloping and reassuring, a strong emotion, not easy to forget. In Ischia, the elements of nature seem to prevail over everything: the air smells of flowers and Mediterranean scrub , the views offer breathtaking spectacles , and silence reigns, broken only by the sound of the winds and the sea.

Ischia is one of the most coveted places for summer seaside tourism , but it is also very popular with nature and wellness lovers . Here you will find, in fact, coves, beaches, ports, rocks and lots of nature, but also the opportunity to experience a holiday dedicated to wellness and beauty . It offers a time to relax and regenerate  and leave again in splendid physical and mental shape.

Ischia is one of the most important thermal basins in the world, with the healing properties of the waters that flow from the subsoil and the seabed, already known in Roman times . For example, the  Greeks used to go to the thermal baths of Ischia to restore body and spirit and to heal wounds after battles.

But Ischia is also the perfect destination for sports enthusiasts: in fact, on the island, you can practice horse riding  and mountain biking , as well as trekking and all water sports .

Historically, the various areas of the island have had an autonomous development due to their different economic characteristics. While agriculture prevailed in the Sant’Angelo area, the economy of Forio was mainly linked to fishing. Separate cases are Lacco Ameno and Casamicciola , home to thermal baths since ancient times. Geographically, the island is divided into six municipalities : Ischia Porto - Ischia Ponte, Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno, Forio, Serrara Fontana and Barano d’Ischia. The maritime connections with Ischia depart from Naples and Pozzuoli by hydrofoil and ferry.

So, let’s go to discover 10 things to do in Ischia, the world's most beautiful island :

1. The Aragonese Castle

It looks like an island within an island. The majestic Aragonese Castle of Ischia retains 25 centuries of history and has seen various civilizations pass over the island: Greeks, Romans, the Aragonese dynasty, and the Colonna family. It is a fortress built on an islet in front of Ischia , a strategic place for defence against attacks by sea.

The castle is connected to Ischia by a bridge 220 meters long and is accessible from the island port, with a walk of about half an hour, through a tunnel or 15 minutes by bus. Originally the castle could only be reached by sea, using a ladder. Today, it can be reached by crossing paths that offer beautiful views leading up to the top of the islet .

2. the thermal parks.

The Greeks and Romans were the first to create thermal establishments  to benefit from the therapeutic properties of the waters of Ischia. Among Ischia's thermal parks, the Gardens of Poseidon are the largest ones, with 22 thermal pools. Each tub has a different temperature and different therapeutic powers. In addition, the  Gardens of Poseidon have a private,  equipped beach and offer spa and beauty treatments . A rejuvenating day in one of Ischia's thermal parks is an experience not to be missed!

3. the mortella gardens.

The Mortella Gardens are located in Forio and were created by the wife of an English orchestra composer, who wanted to make a place with the most particular plant species in the world. This garden was born after World War II, when Lady Walton moved to Ischia , and offers a unique spectacle in the world , with plants and flowers of species still unknown today. In 2004, it was awarded as the most beautiful garden in Italy .

In the upper part of the garden, on the slope of the hill, a theatre has been built that can accommodate up to 400 people, where various kinds of theatrical and musical performances are held in the summer season.

4. borgo sant’angelo.

Borgo Sant’Angelo is the ancient fishing village of Ischia and represents the classic Mediterranean landscape , with its colourful houses perched on the tuff ridge. The Piazzetta , which directly overlooks the marina , is a meeting point with its shops and clubs and is pedestrian. On the tower, in the upper part of the village, there is the church dedicated to the Archangel Michael. On 29 and 30 September, the saint is carried in procession along the streets of the village, then returned to the church by sea on a boat, accompanied by music and fireworks.

5. the church of soccorso.

The Church of Soccorso is one of the most Instagrammable places in Ischia . This church, dedicated to the Madonna della Neve , stands out in white and overlooks the sea. It is a very interesting church to visit, as it houses in the sacristy some paintings representing the ex-votos of the sailors and their wives, who prayed to the Madonna to return home safe after sailing at sea, or who tell of shipwrecks or miracles.

6. the torone tower.

The Torone Tower in the Forio area is a watchtower near the Church of Soccorso. It is a strategic place for the island's inhabitants, given that the danger signal was sent from here in case of the sighting of invaders. In addition, the Torone houses an art gallery and a municipal museum .

7. the nitrodi spring.

It is the only thermal water that flows from the island and can also be drunk. This water has therapeutic properties for various ailments and diseases, treats any skin impurity and has healing properties .

8. baia di sorgeto.

It is a small rocky inlet, famous for its sulphurous hot springs , located in the municipality of Forio . In short, it is a free spa park open 24 hours a day for 12 months a year (even in winter!). The only fee to pay for this unique experience is the over 200 steps to take to reach the bay (during the summer, there is a taxi boat by sea from Sant’Angelo).

9. the ischia-style rabbit.

In addition to the places to visit, the Ischian culinary tradition also has a lot to offer. A famous saying says that "In Ischia, you eat, drink and whistle" (it sounds better in Italian " A Ischia si mangia, si beve e si fischia" ).

Despite being a seaside resort, Ischia has a gastronomic heritage linked mainly to agriculture, the main source of livelihood for the islanders, also thanks to the fertility of the volcanic soil that characterizes the island. Suffice it to say that the rabbit , imported to the island by the Romans , has always been the animal most raised by the Ischitans, and the vine is the most practised cultivation.

The traditional dish par excellence is the Ischia-style rabbit , the recipes have been jealously handed down for generations, and each family has its variant.

© iStock/robypangy

The rabbit is cleaned, washed and cut into pieces, then browned in a pan with oil and garlic, blended with white wine, and then cooked slowly over low heat with fresh tomatoes. In the end, the dish is flavoured with chopped parsley. With the sauce that remains on the bottom of the pan, it is traditional to season the pasta and thus obtain a complete meal.

10. The bench overlooking the sea

Ischia is dotted with benches along its paths to allow visitors to enjoy the many spectacles of nature . But the sea view bench we are talking about has been defined as the most beautiful bench in the world . Located on the trekking route that crosses the promontory of Sant’Angelo , it is right above Maronti Beach , the largest and most popular on the island, which it overlooks. At the height of 100 meters, the view embraces the whole promontory.

It is a bench built by hand with pieces of logs and wooden boards. Here, the atmosphere becomes a fairytale and reminds us of a slow and sustainable tourism that can be practised on this island, already very popular for its spas, hills, beautiful views and crystal clear sea.

Much has been said about Ischia in the past few years, thanks in part to the HBO-RAI adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s  My Brilliant Friend  and the reopening of the famed Mezzatorre Hotel. The largest island in the Gulf of Naples , Ischia has long been overshadowed by the allure of Capri and the Amalfi Coast but the “Green Island” is finally stepping into its own.

There are a lot of things to love about Ischia, including its mineral-rich wines, long stretches of sandy beaches, thermal baths and excellent, affordable cuisine. The island is lush, wild and still remains refreshingly local – it’s not polished as Capri and therein lies its charm. Ischia is densely populated, and inhabited year-round, so it has a lot to offer in every season. The secret about Ischia is out but there are plenty of hidden gems left to discover on the island.

Castello Aragonese

travel and leisure ischia 2022

The impressive Castello Aragonese, built in 474 BC by Hiero I of Syracuse, is the island’s most iconic landmark but the rocky islet is home to more than just a castle. A whole  borgo  exists within the fortification and you can visit ruins of a cathedral, panoramic terraces and numerous churches. The Castello is also the setting for  Albergo Il Monastero , a discrete hotel built within a 16 th  century monastery.

La Cantinola di Zio Jack

travel and leisure ischia 2022

Set high up in the hills above Forio,  La Cantinola di Zio Jack  is an unlikely place for dinner but makes for one of the most memorable meals on the island. Part of the beauty is in the arrival: the trattoria is located up steep, winding country roads that can only accommodate a tiny ape car, so you need to book ahead to arrange the shuttle service.

Once you’ve arrived, you’re greeted by a canopy decked with lights and a view of Ischia’s coastline off in the distance (time your reservation so you can catch the sunset). La Cantinola di Zio Jack serves excellent interpretations of Campania’s best comfort food: you’ll find dishes like patate e provola served in a pizza bread bowl, eggplant parmesan, Ischia-style rabbit and pizza.

Club Scannella

travel and leisure ischia 2022

La Scannella  is another destination that is worth your while. Set within Ischia’s rocky coastline, this idyllic beach club has awe-inspiring views of the sea but can only be reached by walking down hundreds of steep steps or via boat from nearby Sant’Angelo. Its remote location, though, is its greatest asset: with no phone reception down by the water and an enforced silent bathing area, the only sounds you can hear are the waves lapping at the rocks below and seagulls flying overhead.

La Scannella has two cold salt-water pools, a heated swimming pool and easy access to the sea – and the protected cove is a perfect place for snorkeling. It also has 20 bright rooms that look out onto the sea and an all-day restaurant specialized in local cuisine. The menu is extensive, with plenty of fresh fish dishes, a wide array of salads and tantalizing pastas – classic and non. I opted for the paccheri con zucchine which came served in the pan, much to my delight: the pasta was sautéed with an egg, cheese, pepper and a splash of fragrant white wine for an unusual twist.

Casa d’Ambra

travel and leisure ischia 2022

Ischia isn’t well-known as a wine destination outside of Italy, but it will surely receive international acclaim soon. That’s because the island is home to hundreds of vineyards that grow quality indigenous varietals, including Biancolella and Forastera white grapes and Guarnaccia and Per’e’ Palummo ( Piedirosso ) red grapes. Ischia has excellent conditions for viticulture, including a mild climate, volcanic soil and mountainous terrain, and has been producing wine for thousands of years.

While you’re here, don’t miss the chance to visit  Casa d’Ambra , Ischia’s most scenic winery with sweeping views of the sea and the fishing town of Sant’Angelo down below. The winery dates back to 1888 and grows its prized Biancolella grapes, used for its Frassitelli label, at 600 meters above sea level on the slopes of Monte Epomeo, the highest point on the island. The winery is managed by Andrea D’Ambra and his two daughters, Marina and Sara, who lead tours and tastings of Casa d’Ambra’s 10 labels.

Gardenia Mare

travel and leisure ischia 2022

Set within a tranquil bay that looks out onto the Castello Aragonese,  Gardenia Mare  is one of Ischia’s most picturesque beach clubs. It’s a great place for sunbathing, swimming and even snorkeling, with ancient Roman ruins beneath the water and medieval remains in plain sight. Call to book a lounger ahead of time and then arrive by hailing a taxi boat near Ischia Ponte.

Gardenia Mare also has two excellent restaurants: a more casual beach bar, with simple pastas and salads, and a gourmet restaurant overlooking the sea. Try the tasting menu or order à la carte and be prepared to enjoy the catch of the day, including dishes like spaghetti with clams or tuna carpaccio with strawberries. The gourmet restaurant is also open for dinner and makes for a truly romantic evening.

travel and leisure ischia 2022

With hundreds of natural thermal springs, most travelers sail to Ischia for a dip in its sulfuric, healing waters which are thought to provide relief from respiratory diseases, rheumatism and dermatitis. While some hotels have spas, the locals head to  Negombo , a thermal park and lush garden that features contemporary art by Italian sculptors.

This wellness oasis has 12 thermal and marine pools with temperatures ranging from 65° to 100° Fahrenheit as well as a hammam, jacuzzi and access to a fine sandy beach. Special features include the “Templars” showers, designed to relieve tension in the neck and shoulders, and the Kneipp pool and Japanese labyrinth, which alternate hot and cold water to help detox the body. Spa treatments are available onsite along with numerous eateries, including a healthy bar, a casual trattoria and the upscale Al FuGà restaurant.

Thermal baths in Ischia

Fonte di Nitrodi

Reputed to be the oldest spa in the world,  Fonte delle Ninfe Nitrodi  was the site of a devotional center honoring Apollo and the nymphs, lending it its name. You can see still ancient votives on display in the park and it’s well worth a visit in Ischia for its beautiful setting and a truly magical atmosphere. Fonte di Nitrodi is spiritually charged, as wellness seekers have made journeys there for hundreds of years. It’s a place to completely reset and give your skin the love it deserves.

The thermal water has been studied for decades and is beneficial for skin-related illnesses, including psoriasis and acne, as well as gastric disturbances including ulcers, stomach inflammations and heartburn. There are four terraces where you can sunbathe in between rejuvenating showers from the therapeutic springs and showers. You can also enjoy the water’s miraculous properties in the  Ischia SPAEH  line developed for the park.

The most beautiful island in the world in 2022

In the annual ranking of the most beautiful islands in the world 2022, this Italian pearl of the sea takes first place. We have all the details about the most beautiful island in the world in 2022 .

Ischia

The top 10 most beautiful islands in the world

Ischia has been deemed the most beautiful island in the world by Travel+Leisure readers with a score of 94.61. The island has overtaken other beautiful islands across the globe to reach the top of the ranking.

Let's see which beautiful landscapes are included in the top 10 list of the World's Most Beautiful Islands 2022 compiled by Travel+Leisure:

  • The Maldives
  • TheFiji Islands
  • The Galapagos Islands
  • Cape Breton Island

Ischia

This pearl of the Gulf of Naples took the crown thanks to its picturesque views, thermal springs, pristine beaches and the kindness of the residents .

But what are the treasures of Ischia that have made it stand out for the readers of the prestigious travel magazine, making it the most beautiful island in the world?

Ischia

It must be remembered that Ischia is a volcanic island ; a fact that has given rise not only to some of its shiny black sand beaches but also to its many thermal springs, so much so that the islands stunning bathing establishments are its identifying mark.

As well as this, Ischia is perfect for those who dream of a relaxing wellness holiday . Bathing in crystal-clear waters such as those of the Bay of Sorgeto or the Bay of San Montano is a must for maximum relaxation.

Ischia

Ischia is also an island rich in culture. The island's most important monument is the Aragonese Castle , which stands on a small island connected by a bridge to the rest of the island.

The first construction of the castle dates back to 474 B.C. by Hieron of Syracuse , but it was not until 1441 with Alfonso V of Aragon that it reached its current form. Inspired by the Maschio Angioino in Naples, it is now privately owned, but accessible to the public through paid visits.

Aragonese Castle

In the far south of the island lies Borgo Sant'Angelo, a typical fishing village , with its characteristic coloured houses are built against the mountain that towers above it. Closed to cars, the village can only be visited on foot, starting from the traditional small square. The typical dirt path leading to the famous Fumarole starts from here, while the island's subsoil gives off heat here, making the beach particularly warm.

Ischia

Escape to Ischia with Max Mara's Resort 2022 Collection

The collection reminded us that travel is essential and inspiring, in more ways than one.

preview for Escape to Ischia with Max Mara's Resort 2022 Show

Inspired by travel, elegance, and the pursuit of poise, Ian Griffiths designed this Max Mara collection to translate the look of Capote's Swans, and their desires, into a uniform for the modern globetrotting woman . Though the Max Mara Swans' priorities have shifted to accommodate the hustle and bustle of the 21st century, their ambitions, and need for effortless, versatile, wear-anywhere pieces remains the same. And when paired with the backdrop of Ischia, the collection has us ready to board our first flight. As travel becomes an option again , it's nice to know Max Mara has our best interests at heart.

Ginevra Elkann, the granddaughter of Maria Agnelli's, created a beautiful video showcasing the scenic Max Mara show. When asked for her inspiration behind the video, she shares, “Ischia is a stunning island, in some ways, still wild and genuine. It’s where many artists have taken refuge. with its wonderful culture and nature, I think it’s the perfect place to escape to from a hectic city life. This is what I have based the film on: on the idea of working women who come to spend a weekend with their friends in Ischia, in a magnificent location that conjures up the real Italy.”

Below, our favorites from the Max Mara Resort 2022 Collection, and above, Ginevra Elkann's film.
