Cozumel Cruise Terminals: Puerta Maya, Punta Langosta, and International Terminal

Basic guide to the three cruise terminals in Cozumel (Mexico): which ships dock where or anchor in the most popular cruise port in the Caribbean.

By: Editor-in-Chief Update May 28, 2023

Most travelers cruising to Cozumel for the first time do not realize immediately that the cruise ship will be docked at one of many piers.

By contrast, frequent cruisers that have repeatedly docked in Cozumel tend to think that the terminals (and even the piers) are unquestionably designated for specific cruise lines. But, in reality, this is not an immutable fact.

For instance, many a seasoned cruiser will swear that Carnival cruise ships dock exclusively at the Puerta Maya and that Royal Caribbean (and Celebrity ships) only dock at the International Cruise Terminal. As much as this is true (most of the time), the Editor has been on Carnival ships docking at the International Terminal. And, as shown in the photo above, Carnival ships may also dock at the Punta Langosta Terminal.

Although it is not always possible to determine ahead of time what will be the pier (and Terminal) where cruise ships will dock, there are a few guidelines that may help the cruise traveler to plan what to do and see in Cozumel regardless of where ships moor.

The Three Terminals in Cozumel

Image with Map of the Cruise Terminals in Cozumel, Mexico

As you can see on the map above, there are 3 Cruise Terminals in Cozumel. The terminal in Punta Langosta is right by San Miguel's southern end and only has one pier. Likewise, the International Terminal only has one main pier and a smaller one for tender boats. Puerta Maya with two piers is the largest.

Puerta Maya and International Terminal

The Puerta Maya Terminal and the International Cruise Terminal are very close to each other - the entrances are no more than 1,500 feet (500 meters) apart. Both terminals are around 3 miles south of San Miguel, the main city of Cozumel.

Puerta Maya is the largest terminals and just a few hundred yards away from the International Terminal - the latter's pier showing in the photo on the right.

Do not be confused by the pier between the International Terminal and Punta Langosta. This pier is used exclusively by ferries transporting cars and trucks to Playa del Carmen. The pier for the passenger ferry to Playa del Carmen is located in the heart of San Miguel.

As a rule of thumb, Carnival Corporation cruise ships (Carnival, Princess, P&O, Costa and so on) dock at the Puerta Maya Terminal. But, exceptionally, Holland &America cruise ships usually dock at Punta Langosta. Generally speaking, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise ships will dock at the International Cruise Terminal.

All other cruise lines will dock at Punta Langosta. If you are cruising on ships of cruise lines such as NCL, Disney, Oceania, Silversea, Regent or Crystal it is almost guaranteed that your ship will moor at Punta Langosta. But always keep in mind that this is not an immutable fact.

Anchoring and Tenders in Cozumel Cruise Port

Finally, a word about anchoring and tender boats. At the height of the Caribbean Season - between November and March, in particular - the port of Cozumel may be visited by over 8 cruise ships.

When cruise ships anchor, tender boats will moor at smaller piers next to Puerta Maya or the International Pier.

When this happens, cruise ships will anchor close to both the Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminals and passengers will be tendered by local boats to adjacent, smaller piers on one of the terminals. These piers may also be used for shore excursions.

International Pier is in the middle between Punta Langosta and Puerto Maya. You can certainly walk from this pier to the downtown area, however our experience has often been that it’s really hot, and taxis are plentiful and cheap.

Royal Caribbean Celebrity and Norwegian Cruise Line often dock at this cruise terminal.

Pro tip: After an excursion, consider heading into the Royal Village Shopping Mall, right across the street from the pier. It’s a good place for souvenirs, handicrafts and t-shirts. However the best part is that it is air conditioned!

Puerto Maya

cozumel busy port

Puerto Maya is the cruise terminal farthest from Downtown, but closest some of Cozumel’s most popular beaches. This cruise terminal has several restaurants and popular bars, and opportunities to shop for silver jewelry, pottery, t-shirts and vanilla to take back home.

Cozumel – What Cruise Passengers Need to Know

The currency used in Cozumel is the Mexican Peso (MXN), however US dollars are readily and happily accepted.

Major credit cards are also accepted, however you’ll want to keep some smaller bills 1$, 5$, 10$ handy for cab rides and for shopping at the local shops and markets.

Spanish is the official language in Cozumel, but many locals working in tourist areas speak English. Learning a few basic Spanish phrases can enhance your experience.

Cozumel, a tropical island in the Caribbean, experiences warm temperatures ranging from 75°F to 88°F throughout the year. The hottest months are typically June through September, with higher humidity levels.

The dry season spans from November to April, with lower chances of rain. The rainy season typically occurs from June to October, with a higher chance of tropical showers or storms.

Cozumel is in the Eastern Standard Time (EST) zone.

Getting Around Cozumel

Cruise ships in Cozumel

Cozumel is an easy great cruise port to visit with a shore excursion, or on your own. Taxis are readily available at the cruise port and if you are docked closest to the Downtown, you can explore on foot.

Scooter or Car Rental

Renting a scooter or car is also an option if you want to explore the island independently. However, it’s best to exercise caution and this is generally not recommended by the cruise line.

A ferry is available as well. Be careful if taking a ferry on your own, and make sure to check the schedule carefully so that you don’t risk not making it back to the ship before boarding time.

The easiest and safest way to visit the attractions in Cozumel is to take a taxi. In fact, many of the best beaches in Cozumel are only about 15 minute cab ride away.

When you exit the cruise port terminal building, you’ll find the taxi area with the taxi fares displayed. Fares to most beaches on the west side are about 6$ a person/per way. If you have more people in your party, the cost may be lower.

25 Best Things to Do in Cozumel Cruise Port

Here are the best things to do in Cozumel on a cruise, from shore excursions to activities you can do on your own.

Free Things to Do in Cozumel

Overall, Cozumel is not an expensive island to visit. In fact, there are many inexpensive and even, free things to do In Cozumel for the day in port.

1. San Miguel

San Miguel is in the downtown area of Cozumel. It’s closest to the Punta Langosta pier, so its actually an easy walk. If you’re at one of the piers further west, you can either take a longer walk, or take a 10 minute cab ride. Since Cozumel tends to be very hot, a cab ride may be your best bet!

In San Miguel, you’ll find many local shops selling souvenirs, local crafts, silver jewelry, beautiful white cotton casual and beach wear. You can also stop in at a local restaurant where you can find authentic Mexican cuisine.

If you enjoy just getting out and walking, the waterfront view is gorgeous, and of course, window shopping is free. You can also walk and stop in at Benito Juarez Park and visit the charming (and old) San Miguel Church.

 2. Playa Corona Beach

beach in cozumel

While you won’t get all the bells and whistles that comes with some of the all-inclusive resort style beach resorts, this free beach has amazing snorkeling! Plus, its only a 15 minute cab ride away from the pier.

You can enter this beach for free and bring your own snorkel gear. They do also rent equipment if you need it.

There is also a family owned bar and restaurant on site if you decide to sit and grab a bite.

Mr. Sanchos is a very popular beach club for both families and couples alike. If you like to pay one price for all the food you can eat and frozen margaritas you can drink, checl out Mr. Sanchos for the day in Cozumel.

At Chakanaab you can snorkel as well as swim and interact with dolphins and manatees.

This marine park is located about 15 minutes by cab from the cruise port.

Something to note is that although this is a full day shore excursion, the park is approximately 1 and a half hours away from the cruise terminal.

This is an active excursion which involves a lot of walking and even a boat ride, so just make sure the whole family is up for an enjoyable, but active day.

9. Cozumel Butterfly & Botanical Gardens

Located closeby to the cruise ship terminals, the Cozumel Butterfly & Botanical Gardens is a great activity for the whole family. Best Cozumel Excursions for Couples

Many couples cruise to celebrate a special occasion like an anniversary , so why not plan a romantic day in Cozumel?

14. Nachi Cocum Beach Club

There are a lot of very beautiful beaches and resort areas. However, Nachi Cocum offers a more exclusive beach day experience than what you’ll find at some of the more family friendly beach resorts.

At Nachi Cocum you’ll get an all-inclusive beach break excursion. It offers a beautiful beach, pool and jacuzzi and more. However, what sets it apart is that is limits the number of guests to only 130. Cozumel beaches can get very crowded, so having a more secluded beach feel is extra special.

15. Champagne Catamaran Sail and Snorkel

cozumel catamaran excursion

This is made for couples! Who wouldn’t enjoy sipping champagne while enjoying a romantic sail around the turquoise waters of Cozumel?

Cozumel has some of the best snorkeling in the world (it is home to the world’s second largest reef). If you don’t usually snorkel, why not give it a try? You’ll come back with amazing memories of your couples cruise.

16. Mr. Sanchos Beach VIP All Inclusive Romance Day

This is really a perfect day for those that are looking for a something romantic to do in Cozumel, while still enjoying one of the most popular spots close by to the cruise port.

Mr. Sanchos offers couples an all-inclusive food and drink package, along with a 30 minute massage, a beautiful cabana and some VIP treatment.

Mayan Ruins & Archeological Sites

Cozumel is well known for 2 archaeological sites. If you aren’t into beaches and water sports, and prefer learning and experiencing the culture when cruising, you will enjoy either of these Cozumel excursions.

17. Mayan Ruins of Tulum

Cozumel Tulum Mayan Ruins

Visiting Mayan Ruins is a bucket list item for many! One of the most well known and well preserved ruins are the Mayan Ruins in Tulum.

It’s known not only as an incredible archaeological site, and for it’s preserved temples and hieroglyphs, but also for it’s truly spectacular views overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This is definitely a place for Insta-worthy photos!

It’s about an hour away from Cozumel to Playa Del Carmen by ferry and is considered a full day excursion. While you can book this on your own, depending on what time your ship is due to leave the port, you may want to book this with the ship.

18. San Gervasio Ruins

If you would like to visit Mayan Ruins which are closer to the ship than Tulum, opt for an excursion to San Gervasio. These ruins are considered to be significant to the Mayan culture and an interesting archaeological site, which is only about 30 minutes away from the Cozumel cruise port.

A bonus is that there is the small entrance fee of 5$, so this is a relatively inexpensive Cozumel shore excursion.

Museums and Mayan Culture

19. discover mexico park cozumel.

There’s quite a lot to do at this cultural theme park, located about 10 minutes from the cruise port. Things to do include a museum of Mexican traditional arts, a video experience room, a unique take on a botanical garden, and performances by Papantla Flyers.

On top of this, they offer some add-on tours for those that are interested. One tour that is quite popular is the Jose Cuervo tequila tasting.

20. Museum of Cozumel (Museo de la Isla de Cozumel)

Located in the San Miguel area of Cozumel, this small museum offers great information about Cozumel’s history including it’s Mayan past, it’s geography and it’s ecological side. You’ll also see ancient artifacts all for 4$ a person. There’s a nice restaurant on site with a beautiful view should you decide to stay for lunch.

21. Amazing Secret River

For something completely different and unique, consider visiting Amazing Secret River. This is an underground river within stunning crystal caves where stalagmites surround you. This is a guided tour where you will get wet, as you’ll be swimming or wading through the waters.

This is located in Playa Del Carmen rather than on the mainland, so you will have to take a boat-ride there. My recommendation is to book with the cruise line or ensure you book with a reputable tour operator.

22. Take a Jeep or ATV Tour to Jade Cavern

The ultimate fun excursion is an off-road trip over to Jade Caverns by Jeep or ATV. You’ll see wildlife and vegetation along the way. Once you arrive at Jade Caverns, you’ll enjoy swimming in the breathtaking natural pool. If you’ve been to a Cozumel beach in the past, this is be a fun way to see a different part of the island.

23. Cozumel Horseback Riding at Mr. Sanchos Beach Club

If you’ve always wanted to go horseback riding on the beach, check out the horseback riding tour at Mr. Sanchos. This is a 30 minute tour with a guide through the mangrove forests and jungle, before getting to the white sand beach and turquoise waters.

Pro tip: Make sure to sign up as soon as you get to the beach club, as there could be a waiting time.

24. Jeep or ATV Tour & Beach Break

Explore Cozumel’s rugged terrain by jeep or ATV. You’ll drive through the jungle, visit secluded beaches, and have the opportunity to snorkel in pristine waters.

25. Cozumel Highlights Tour

Can’t decide what to do in Cozumel? Many cruise lines offer organized shore excursions that provide a comprehensive overview of Cozumel’s highlights. These tours typically include visits to popular attractions such as the San Gervasio Ruins, beaches, and shopping areas.

Cozumel Food & Drink Tours

One of the best parts of travel is trying the local cuisine and enjoying the variety of food and drink. Cozumel has many restaurants and bars available, however if you want an authentic experience, these are 2 highly recommended Cozumel shore excursions for foodies.

26. Cozumel Food Tour

If you love food and culture, you’ll really enjoy eating and learning about Yucatan cuisine. This is an opportunity to visit a few of the “best eats” in Cozumel and taste authentic Mexican cuisine. Enjoy beer and a local beverage agua fresca along with delicious pastries. My mouth was watering as I wrote this!

virgin voyages cozumel port

27. Tequila Tasting Tour

It wouldn’t be Mexico if we didn’t include a Tequila Tasting Tour. This tour is housed in Discover Mexico Park Cozumel and it’s about more than drinking tequila.

While you’ll taste several tequilas, you’ll also visit the facilities and learn about how tequila is made. Cruisers report enjoying small margaritas and very tasty tacos, and even learning how to make margaritas at home.

28. Chocolate Workshop at Discover Mexico Park in Cozumel

If you’re a chocolate lover, don’t miss the Chocolate Workshop at Discover Mexico Park in Cozumel. During this popular excursion, you’ll learn about the history and process of chocolate production, participate in a hands-on chocolate-making workshop, and sample different types of chocolate.

29. Eat & Drink at Fat Tuesdays or 3 Amigos

Located near the cruise ship terminals, head into Fat Tuesday’s or 3 Amigos for awesome frozen drinks, music and tons of fun! Enjoy tacos and other yummy Mexican fare with your favorite beverage while watching the nearby cruise ships in port.

Cozumel Shopping

Great information! Cozumel has become one of our favorites, too! So many options to choose from. We really liked Chankanaab as a family. We played with the Manatees! Next month we plan to try Nachi Cocom.

' src=

Hi Jillian,

Chankanaab sounds so wonderful – I’ve only heard good things! I’d love to check out the manatees (they’re so cute!).

Let me know how you like Nachi Cocum :-).

Have a great cruise!

I enjoyed your blog. It has great content and useful information. I’ve been to Cozumel twice and would love to go again. Whenever you visit Austin Texas, be sure to check my blogs for things to do. https://nautisideboatrentals.com/blogs/

Thanks so much for your kind words. I’m so glad you found the info helpful.

I haven’t ever been to Texas, but would love to one day. I’ll be sure to check out your blog.

' src=

I have not been to Cozumel yet. Cruise is leaving in 10 days. One thing to note, a lot of tours do not operate on Sundays. It was a bit frustrating trying to find excursions that operate on Sundays.

That is frustrating. Did you end up booking with the cruise line in that case?

' src=

I recommend Money Bar for snorkeling. Its right on a reef so the snorkeling is great – saw a spotted eagle ray in March. Its a cheap and easy taxi ride and pay as you go. Overall a great day in Cozumel!

Great to know! Thanks for sharing Cheryl!

Hi ILANA we stop at Cozumel with our carribean cruise end July. We would love to do the 3 Reefs snorkling excursion. Can you recommend a good company Guide to take us?

We are a family of for (with 2 boys 14 and 18) and we come all the way from Morocco. Our first cruise trip ever. I your videos very useful 🙂

I don’t have a specific private excursion recommendation. You can always see reviews on Trip Advisor and other websites where you can see multiple reviews.

There are always snorkeling excursions available with the cruise line, so this may be worth checking for you.

Have a wonderful cruise!

' src=

Hi Ilana! We’re going on the Carnival Breeze cruise in July. It ports in western Cozumel. Are there any restaurants or public beach area where you can just sit in the sand in the port area? My husband really does not want to travel away from the pied. Thank you!

Yes, you’ll find lots closeby

' src=

Will be in Cozumel in January 2024. Have booked the Mayan ruins and chocolate tasting through RCL. It will be my first time cruising to Cozumel. Also, my first cruise going solo. Normally I am with family members. It will be different!! Love your youtube videos. Keep on keeping us informed!!

Thanks for sharing your experience 🙂

After a long-awaited time, Virgin Voyages has embarked on their very first journey headed from Miami to Quintana Roo and back.

virgin voyages cozumel port

Virgin Voyages first ship, “The Scarlet Lady” has finally embarked on its very first journey from a popular port in Miami, USA and will wander through the crystalline Caribbean sea visiting ports in both Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.

This cruise was originally scheduled to leave Miami’s port back in March 2020, but those plans came to a screeching halt when the Covid-19 pandemic shut the world down. Many travelers and tourism workers were deeply disappointed when the debut was postponed. But the time has come where Scarlet Lady’s first voyage, “The MerMaiden voyage” has finally set sail . In 2015 the brand was officially introduced as Virgin Voyagers, offering cruise-line services where the only child allowed on board is your inner child! That’s right- these journeys are adult-only, giving you and your special someone that extra layer of peace and serenity.

Virgin Voyages embarks for the first time from the USA, will arrive in Cozumel

virgin voyages cozumel port

The Scarlet Lady, the first Virgin Voyages ship, embarked on its first voyage sailing from a port in the United States, the ship left Miami on a four-day cruise, which will pass through Cozumel and Costa Maya.

Virgin, which first revealed its intention to build a cruise line in 2014, said they were happy to crystallize more than seven years of planning. The brand was officially introduced as Virgin Voyages in 2015 as an adults-only cruise line.

Virgin Voyages is charting our own path, offering a new perspective on cruise travel with a blend of familiarity and a healthy dose of Virgin satisfaction, ”Virgin Group founder Richard Branson said in a statement.

Virgin, which called its first sailing its “MerMaiden voyage,” originally planned to start Scarlet Lady cruises from Miami in March 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic postponed the ship’s debut. The Scarlet Lady sailed a few preview cruises from the UK in August, which Virgin called successful.

What to Expect on Virgin Voyages Compared to Other Cruise Lines (Differences, What to Know, & More)

Never sailed on Virgin Voyages and not quite sure what to expect? Maybe you’ve seen the advertisements and weren’t sure exactly how it compared to other major cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian.

Or maybe you saw that it was adults only and wanted to know more before you spend your hard-earned money on sailing a relatively new cruise line?

So what’s Virgin Voyages like? How is it different from other lines? And what else should you know before you sail? Below, we dive into these questions and give you the real scoop of everything about the cruise line.

How Is Virgin Voyages Different Than Other Cruise Lines?

Scarlet Lady docked in Miami.

Trying to explain all the differences between Virgin and more traditional cruise lines is a challenge. Put bluntly, there are a lot of changes both big and small.

Let’s start with being adults only. That actually means much more than simply there are no kids running around the ship.

Instead, everything about the cruise can be tailored to adult tastes. Entertainment on the ship is more mature, such as drag shows in the nightclub. Many events go on until later at night than on a normal cruise. The food offered is more adventurous and upscale (though traditional options are available). The amenities offered around the ship are also different. Instead of waterslides and putt-putt, it’s yoga classes, tattoo parlors, and fitness equipment.

Along with these changes, Virgin also seems to have taken a hard look at traditional things in cruising and made changes that will appeal to many. For instance, the cruise director, art auctions, and roving photographers are out. Instead of a buffet where everyone serves themselves, the cruise line offers a food hall with a number of spots to eat where food is either prepared as you order or plated for you if already made.

There’s no main dining room or formal night. Instead, Virgin Voyages has several different sit down restaurants that are all included with your fare. Gratuities are included in your fare as well, as is wi-fi service.

Bottom line: It’s much more of an all-inclusive feel on the ship, with more that aims to cater to adults that you simply wouldn’t find on other lines.

What’s Included on Virgin Voyages?

One of the big differences we mentioned above is that a number of items that are typically an extra charge on a cruise are included in your fare. Of course, your room, food, and entertainment on the ship are all included. But so are the following items:

  • All restaurants on the ship
  • Crewmember gratuities
  • Basic non-alcoholic drinks, including soda
  • Basic wi-fi
  • Fitness classes

What you will still have to pay out of pocket for are things like casino gambling, spa treatments, shore excursions, and alcoholic drinks. Still, between food, gratuities, and wi-fi alone, the included items add up to hundreds of dollars per passenger.

What’s the Crowd Like Onboard?

Pool on Scarlet Lady from Virgin Voyages

Step onto the ship and you’ll likely notice that your other passengers overall are a little different than on some other lines. Compared to most lines, we think that Virgin Voyages sees passengers that skew younger and a bit more fashionable.

One thing you don’t have to worry about is fitting in. While marketing for Virgin seems to focus on the “cool” factor with lots of beautiful and trendy people, there are all sorts of people on the ship — young, old, black, white, beautiful and not-so-beautiful, gay, straight.

Overall, the crowd seems very inclusive and everyone was friendly as you’d expect on a normal cruise.

Is There a Difference Between Ships?

Anyone who has sailed before knows that so much of your cruise is actually spent onboard the ship. In many ways, the ship is the actual main destination of your cruise, not the ports of call.

Typically there is a major difference between newer and older ships. However, since Virgin Voyages is still a new line, it only has three ships (with a fourth on the way). These vessels all have the same layout. So whether you are on Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, or Resilient Lady, you’ll have a similar experience.

It also means you don’t have to worry about picking the right ship for your cruise. You really only have one option.

What’s the Atmosphere Like on the Ship?

virgin voyages cozumel port

Every cruise line has its own personality, and Virgin Voyages is no different. In our view, the atmosphere definitely tends to be more modern and a bit more “cool” than what’s seen on other lines. If Instagram built a cruise ship, it might look a bit like Virgin.

There’s a lot of use of color (especially lights) to set the mood for different spaces — even down to the wake coming off the back of the ship.

Around the ship are lots of seating and daybeds built for two, which combined with the red you see everywhere, adds to the “sexiness” of the cruise ship.

In fact, we found that most often the atmosphere can change depending on time of day. During most of the day, the atmosphere seems to focus more on relaxation and wellness. There are yoga classes, the vibe is relaxed, and generally slow-paced.

In the late afternoon and evening, things change up a bit with the evening programming that’s more focused on entertainment and partying, including Scarlet Night when everything is doused in red light and the nightclub can go until 3 a.m.

One other note: Overall, we found the staff to be a step above what’s on other cruise lines. Generally any cruise staff is going to be upbeat and friendly. On Virgin Voyages, it simply seemed more genuine and as if the staff had a strong camaraderie between each other. It’s hard to explain, but it was a feeling of the staff being happy you were there.

What Are the Cabins Like?

virgin voyages cozumel port

As you’d expect given the atmosphere on the ship, that “cool” factor extends to the cabin. You can expect the layout of the cruise cabin to be similar to other lines. You’ll have your bed, the bathroom, closet/storage, and balcony (with a hammock swing) if you choose that room type.

But cabins also have some upgraded touches. In a small (but loved) perk, Virgin offers a carafe of water and glasses. That means you don’t have to bring or buy bottles of water or drink out of the bathroom faucet just to get a swig of water in your cabin.

There are also some higher-end touches. In the cabin shower, there’s a rainfall showerhead included, instead of just the sprayer on the end of a wand. Your room is controlled by a tablet that acts as the remote control and can be used to dim lights, and even activate different colors to set the mood. Of course, if you don’t want to use the tablet, manual controls and a TV remote are also offered.

Bottom line: Much of the cabin will be familiar, but with some upgraded features that make it feel nicer than the average cruise room.

What Is The Band?

virgin voyages cozumel port

If you’ve cruised before, it was likely on a line that has a credit card style room key that served to open your room, check you on and off the ship, and charge items to your onboard account.

On Virgin Voyages, you have “The Band” instead. This is a stylish little bracelet (complete with an anchor clasp) that holds a gray tag. This serves the same function as the room keycard. You swipe it on your door sign to unlock the room. It’s scanned when you come and go on the ship, and it’s scanned whenever you make a purchase onboard.

It’s a bit easier than having to dig out your card each time to need it, but it does have a tendency to want to come off occasionally.

What Sort of Entertainment Is There on the Ship?

virgin voyages cozumel port

You’d expect that a ship focused on adults might have different entertainment, and in this case, you’re right.

First, the biggest difference we noticed is that Virgin doesn’t offer a traditional large theater that seats hundreds and hundreds at one time. Instead, they have smaller venues. As a result, there aren’t the big production shows like you see elsewhere.

Instead, the shows are more intimate in crowd size, but still feature amazing talent. One show we say was an acrobatic program between a red team and blue team that features climbing a 25-foot pole in the middle of the stage with no harness, flips after being launched in the air on a see-saw, juggling, and more.

Other shows included a mentalist and comedian with a quick-witted sense of humor that was able to make off-color jokes since everyone was adults. Virgin also had a resident drag queen with several performances during the cruise.

Are Drinks Included? How Much Do They Cost?

So much is included on your cruise, but one area that isn’t — alcoholic beverages. Virgin Voyages does charge for these, but there are a couple of things to know.

First, when it comes to cost the menu prices range from about $10-14 depending on the drink. We ordered some simple drinks (Moscow mule and a mojito) that were only $9. One nice thing is that because gratuity is included, the menu price is what you pay. There is no additional tip tacked on.

As well, Virgin doesn’t have drink packages. Instead they have a “Bar Tab” that’s credit toward drinks. Depending on your booking, you can get this included in your trip. During our cruise we booked and had $300 already included, so drinks were on the house.

How Does Food Work on the Cruise? Is it Good?

virgin voyages cozumel port

One thing you’ll like about Virgin Voyages is that all food on the ship is included. There are no extra charges for some restaurants.

The dining onboard can be thought of in two groups. First, there is The Galley. While the ships don’t have buffets, The Galley is a large dining hall with a number of different stalls serving different foods. There’s a burger spot, a taco spot, ramen/noodle bar, a sushi area, salad area, dessert spot and more. All of these spots are either grab and go or you simply wait a few minutes while they prepare your meal.

Then there are a number of sit-down restaurants serving anything from upscale Mexican to Italian, steak, and more. These spots typically require reservations (though walk-ins are welcome) and fill up quickly. It’s your choice where to eat, and you can dine at whatever time you are able. There is no assigned seating or dining rooms like on many other cruise lines.

To us, the food was solid to very good. The Galley offers a lot of options, whether you want simple (burger and fries) to more adventurous (sushi, ramen). However, the sit-down restaurants are a step above. We especially enjoyed Pink Agave, the upscale Mexican restaurant where everything was phenomenal.

What’s Good About Cruising Virgin Voyages?

virgin voyages cozumel port

There’s a lot that’s different about Virgin Voyages, and we think that’s what makes it a great cruise line to sail if you’re an adult looking for a getaway.

For one, we think the cruise line earns high marks in reinventing what a cruise can be. If you’re someone that’s been turned off by some of the “kitsch” in cruising, then cruising Virgin will be refreshing. There’s no line dancing on the pool deck or roving photographers or overly-excited cruise director.

As well, by including many things with the cruise, the headache of being nickeled and dimed around the ship is gone. Essentially the only things you’ll pay for onboard are alcohol, spa treatments, and gambling.

Finally, by catering to adults Virgin has shifted the design of everything from the ship to food to entertainment to more mature tastes that are more appealing to many.

What Are the Downsides of Cruising Virgin Voyages?

A crowded pool on a Virgin Voyages cruise ship

There’s a lot to like about Virgin, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. So what should you know that’s not so good?

Our biggest complaint is that the pool area seems small given the size of the ship. There are two pools, but the main pool only had seating for a couple of hundred people around it that seemed to fill up quickly when at sea.

As well, the reservation system for restaurants needs work. During our cruise we found that reservations were completely booked days in advance, yet when we went down to see if there was any space for walk-in, the restaurants had plenty of open tables. (We were seated immediately.)

We will also say that compared to other mass market lines with mega ships, there aren’t near as many things to do as you see elsewhere. For instance, there’s no roller coaster, go-kart track, zipline, rock-climbing wall or the like. That’s by design as these are largely included to appeal to kids and teens on the ship. However, if you’re someone that likes to be more active, you might be wanting more things to do.

Is Virgin Voyages Right for Me?

The Beach Club at Bimini

Having sailed the line recently, we think there is a lot for passengers to like about the cruise line no matter who you are. As mentioned, we saw all types on the ship from older couples to bachelorette parties. And the appeal is broad.

Overall, the crowd seems to skew younger — and more upscale — than most cruises. The atmosphere — ranging from the vibe on the ship to food to entertainment — definitely caters more to adult tastes. We think who would love the cruise line the most would be a couple from 30-60 years old celebrating an anniversary, special occasion, or simply wanting a romantic trip away. That, however, also casts too narrow a net as we saw all sorts having a great time.

In fact, outside of families, we have a hard time pinpointing who the cruise line wouldn’t appeal to. Personally we were worried that the cruise would be too trendy and cool for us to feel comfortable (there is a tattoo parlor onboard, after all), but that wasn’t the case at all. Instead, it was a great time with a lot of changes made to the traditional cruise to make it more appealing.
