Copenhagen food
Renowned for its commitment to sustainability and emphasis on local produce, Copenhagen’s food scene has earned global acclaim. From the bustling food markets like Torvehallerne, showcasing an array of fresh, seasonal ingredients, to the innovative kitchens of Michelin-starred restaurants, the city boasts a culinary tapestry as diverse as its neighborhoods.
You can explore the roots of Danish gastronomy through traditional delights such as smørrebrød, an open-faced sandwiches adorned with flavorful toppings. Witness the culinary evolution with the emergence of New Nordic cuisine, where chefs skillfully marry traditional techniques with avant-garde approaches, resulting in dishes that are both visually stunning and gastronomically satisfying.
Smørrebrød, a Danish culinary delight
Smørrebrød, a quintessential Danish culinary delight, is more than just an open-faced sandwich, it’s a cultural institution on a plate. Translated simply as “buttered bread,” smørrebrød is a culinary tradition that has been an integral part of Danish dining for centuries.
At its core, smørrebrød consists of a foundation of dense, dark rye bread generously slathered with creamy butter. What elevates this seemingly humble dish to a culinary art form is the symphony of carefully arranged toppings that adorn its surface. From delicate layers of thinly sliced cold cuts, herring, or smoked fish to vibrant spreads of pickled vegetables, fresh herbs, and tangy sauces, each smørrebrød creation is a masterpiece of flavor, texture, and visual appeal.
Culinary history of Copenhagen
Copenhagen’s culinary scene is a melting pot of flavors, influenced by a rich and varied history. From the traditional Nordic cuisine of the Vikings to the modern food culture of today, the city’s food scene has evolved into a world-renowned destination for foodies.
The culinary history of Copenhagen is a fascinating story that spans centuries. The city’s location on the coast of Denmark made it an important center for trade and commerce, with a vibrant fishing industry that brought in a diverse range of seafood. This led to the creation of classic dishes like fishcakes, smoked herring, and pickled herring, which remain popular to this day.
The city’s culinary history was also influenced by the Danish royal family, who established a number of grand banquets and feasts throughout history. These events introduced many new ingredients and dishes to the city, including roast pork with red cabbage and caramelized potatoes, which is now a beloved Danish staple.
In the 20th century, Copenhagen’s food culture saw a resurgence with the New Nordic Cuisine movement. This movement was led by innovative chefs who sought to showcase the region’s natural ingredients and traditional cooking techniques, creating a new wave of cuisine that quickly gained international acclaim.
If you are interested in exploring the rich culinary history of Copenhagen, we invite you to join one of the best food tours in Copenhagen. Our knowledgeable guides will take you on a journey through the city’s neighborhoods, introducing you to the traditional and modern flavors of Copenhagen’s dynamic food scene.

A culinary hotspot
To understand a culture, you must understand the local food.
On this up to 4-hour walk you will taste lots of delicious food and visit places that care for the ingredients, the producers and the people they are serving. We will take you on a culinary journey from traditional Danish food to the contemporary hotspots and visit the places that aim for change and innovation. We do not visit “tour-places”, but instead we take you to our own favorite places where we also bring our friends and family.
We begin the tour in the city center – where it all began! Our eating route will bring us out to the diverse and trendy neighborhood called Nørrebro. At the end of this tour, you will know the secrets of the city and why Copenhagen has developed into a gastronomic hotspot over the last decade.
We will visit 5 unique gems run by passionate people and friends and when we walk from place to place your local host will share Copenhagen’s food history and show you historical landmarks and cultural highlights.
Now, make sure to arrive hungry!

Copenhagen Culture
We will take you to fantastic food places, but we also want you to experience Danish culture. Beside Copenhagen University from 1479 and other highlights we will also take you to a very unique and special place. The question is – can we eat there?
We love Copenhagen! We hope you will too.
We believe Copenhagen has one of the best food scenes in the world, which makes our work a lot of fun. New places are opening all the time, which is also why our tours change when we feel it makes sense to show something new.
On this approx. 4-hour food walk your host will lead you through Copenhagen’s maze of small alleyways giving you the chance to eat some exquisite delicious food and hear about the passionate people behind.
We believe in being hosts, not guides! This is why we take good care of you during and after the tour and we love to share our knowledge and expertise with you! We are all Danish and consider ourselves as Copenhageners. We know each corner of the city and we can’t wait to welcome you in and to show you our favorite people and places.
