Traveling is ubiquitous in our lives. From day to day work commutes to going on a trip or vacation with our family or friends, we are constantly traveling. And we thank God that traveling has also been made easy. We can turn to many modes of transportation to bring us to our desired destinations. However, traveling still remains a stressful activity. We worry about safety, the sudden change in weather, missed flights, or lost luggage. The list of what can go wrong while traveling is endless and daunting. How and what can we do to deal when such a situation arises? We can turn to our God and say a quick prayer for safe travel. 

Biblical characters like Noah ( Genesis 7:1-24 ), Abraham ( Genesis 12:1-20 , Genesis 13:1-18 ), and Moses ( Exodus 4:18-31 ) have also embarked on several epic journeys. They would have fervently prayed for a safe journey and blessings. Similarly, we should also pray each time we go on a trip. I personally believe that prayer for safe travel is a powerful thing to do before any trip. By praying, we are inviting God and trusting Him that He will get us to our destination, safe and sound. Here are some short prayers for travel that we can pray before traveling. 

1. A Short Prayer for Safe Travel

Here is a short prayer for safe travel that you can say right before your trip.

Lord, I know that You watch my coming and going. Today, I pray for You to watch over me as I travel. Keep me safe in Your loving arms. Let no harm come upon me during my trip and cover me under Your mighty wings. As I step out and start on my journey, I will choose to trust you and not give in to fear. Help me get to my destination and get home safely. Help me to experience Your greatness and love during this trip so that I may draw even closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen. 

Psalm 121:7-8 The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.

2. Prayer for Travel Blessings to Have A Safe Flight

As we go on our trip, let us also ask the Lord for His blessing and favor so that our journey may be smooth and peaceful. Here is a short prayer we can lift to the Lord before a flight.

3. Prayer for Road Trip

Here is a prayer for safe driving and traveling. Let us seek the Lord’s protection before we go on a road trip so He can protect us and keep us safe while we’re on the road.

Lord, today I entrust You for your safety as we go on this road trip. I pray for an alert mind so that I may drive safely. Please sustain my strength during the long trip and bless me with steady hands. Grant in me patience and courtesy to the other drivers on the road, just as how You grant them with patience as well. May this be a smooth journey and no accidents will occur. Bless us, oh Lord, with Your grace and favor that we would enjoy this road trip and witness the wonderful creation that You’ve created with Your hands. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

4. Prayer for Safety and Health Protection from Sickness During Travel

It is also good to pray for the Lord’s protection against any kind of sickness during travel to fully enjoy our trip.

Dear God, as we travel today, I pray that You bless us with Your protection against any kind of sickness during our trip. Bless us with Your mercy and grace that we may be kept in good health as we travel. May the people around us during this trip also be in good health. Protect us from any virus that can bring harm to our health. Give us wisdom to also exercise caution and good hygiene throughout this trip. May the foods that we consume throughout this trip be cleansed by You to provide us with the nutrition to protect our bodies, the holy temples of Yours.  All this I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

5. Safe Travel Prayers for Friends and Loved Ones 

We can also bless our friends and loved ones with a prayer for safe travel before they embark on a trip. Here is a prayer that we can lift for a loved one’s safe journey before they travel. 

Dear Lord, today I surrender my loved one into Your hands. I ask that You bless him/her with a safe trip and cover him/her with Your protection. Shine Your face on him/her Lord, so that no harm come upon him/her and shower them with Your grace as they go. I pray that they would experience Your presence and Your peace during this trip that no trouble or mishap would come upon them. Keep them in good health and give them wisdom and alert mind throughout their journey. May they get to their destination safe and sound. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

6. Prayer for Family Protection and Harmony During Trip

It’s always good for us to say a prayer before any family trips for God’s protection to be upon us and our loved ones. 

Heavenly Father, I lift up my family to You today as we travel. I pray for You to watch over us and keep us from harm. Guide us and guard us during our trip and keep us out of any unforeseen danger. Protect us from any kind of sickness as well while we are traveling. Let there be harmony among us and may love and peace reign throughout this trip. Help us exercise patience and forgiveness towards each other that there would be no squabbles among us during this journey. May our journey be smooth and peaceful, and may we get to our destination safely. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord, I lift my friend to You today. Bless him/her with Your mercy and grace as he/she sets out on a trip. I pray that You would protect him/her from any harm and danger. May he/she would have a great time and that he/she take with him/her wonderful memories from this travel experience. Most importantly, I pray that he/she would find time to reconnect with You and gain valuable lessons as well. May this journey be a peaceful, fun, and relaxing time for him/her. Keep him/her safe until he/she reaches his/her destination. Guide him/her and give him/her wisdom and an alert mind, and let him/her not lose sight of You throughout this trip. As we embark on our trips, let us pray for a safe voyage and ask the Lord to guard you and no harm shall come to you.

Dear Lord, I thank you for the opportunity to travel and see the marvelous creation that You’ve so wonderfully created for us. As I embark on this voyage, I ask that You be with me every step of the way. God, You are King of Kings, the God of all gods. You calm the storms and quieten seas. A prayer for protection from accidents.

Dear Lord, I pray for all those out on the roads today. I pray that they will be more cautious and less distracted. Help us to navigate the jam-packed roads on our way to our destination. Traveling for the holidays can bring a lot of worry and anxiety. What if we break down? What if we get a flat tire? What if we get stranded outside of nowhere? What if we get lost? Even with all our modern conveniences like cell phones, GPS and services like Onstar, anxiety can still set in. Still, we need to trust above all else, that the Lord will keep us safe. Here are some verses to keep in mind when the worry and anxiety of traveling get to be too much.

My God is my rock. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence.  2 Samuel 22:3 (NLT)

He led me to a place of safety, he rescued me because he delights in me. 2 Samuel 22:20 (NLT)

So the Lord provided someone to rescue the Israelites from the Arameans. Then Israel lived in safety again, as they had in former days. 2 Kings 13:5 (NLT)

We shall start out on our road trips like we do any other journey in life, trusting the Lord to lead us, guide us, and keep us safe. With him, we can never be lost, and we’ll always find our way back home.

Traveling may at times evoke feelings of anxiety, fear, or uncertainty. God in His wisdom knew that we may experience these emotions from time to time and has provided encouragement, counsel, and comfort through the holy scriptures.

The Bible has a number of passages that point to the fact that the Lord is always with us in our going out and in our coming in.

It is the Lord who guides and protects us while we travel. In the King James Version of Matthew 28:20 Jesus made a promise that “lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world”.

The Lord is not slack concerning His promises. All we have to do is trust in Him for protection and He will guide us each step of the way.

In the book of Proverbs, we are told to trust in the Lord and He will direct our path. The English Standard Version puts it this way, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths”. Proverbs 3:5-6

There is great comfort in knowing that we serve an omnipresent God who is not just everywhere but takes a deep interest in our wellbeing. The Heavenly Father carefully guards us, He goes before us, and He is beside us.

Luke 4:10 NIV : God’s angels will shield you

“For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;”  

In the gospel of Luke, the word of God gives the assurance that the Lord will command His angels to carefully guard and protect you. There is no need to be anxious or fearful because the Lord has assigned spiritual bodyguards to escort you and provide invisible protection.

Bullets, accidents, and other man-made devices have no power over the entourage of angels who are tasked with your protection as you embark on very risky journeys in remote places or volatile areas.

Proverbs 3:23 NIV : You are under The Lord’s protection “Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.”  

This text offers counsel on how to ensure you have a safe journey without being sidetracked by obstacles and barriers. In verse twenty-one, two important things are mentioned wisdom and discretion.

Wisdom and discretion will ensure that you are guided by sound reason as you embark on your journey. In addition, wisdom comes from the Lord which means you should consult God before any undertaking in order to be shielded from unforeseen danger while traveling.

Proverbs 3:26 NIV: God’s hand will shelter you. “for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.”  

This text has a comforting promise that offers protection. Reflecting on this verse will keep you in good spirits as you prepare for long journeys. The Lord will bless you with sunshine, good weather, smooth traffic, a safe flight, and anything else you need while traveling.

Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV : You are entrusted to God’s care. “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”  

This is one of those Bible verses that speaks true peace to the mind and dispel anxiety and fear. Knowing that the Lion of Judah, the Prince of Peace, and the God of Hosts is with you is very comforting.

Psalm 139:9-10 NIV : Jesus will secure and guard you. “If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, ¹⁰ even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

Prayer for God to Protect You While You Travel

The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in. From this time forth, and even forevermore. – Psalm 121:8 NKJV

Lord, thank you for the opportunity to be able to travel in this season. You have sustained me and my loved ones, and I am grateful. You say in Psalm 121:8 that you shall preserve my going out and coming in from this time forth and forevermore. 

Preserve my life, and get me to my destination and back home safely. I may not see the dangers along the way but I ask that you keep me away from them. Watch over my steps Lord. My life is in your hands, and I trust that you will keep me safe. 

In the mighty name of Jesus, amen and amen.

Prayer Asking For Angels To Help as You Travel

For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. – Psalm 91:11 NKJV

Lord, you never leave me without help, and I thank you for that. You always send your angels to help your children, and you deliver them from any trouble. 

You have promised me in Psalm 91:11 that you shall give your angels charge over me to keep me in all my ways. May your angels guard me and my family as we travel, and keep us out of any unforeseen danger. 

May your angels encamp around me throughout my trip, and deliver me from any harm that may be on my way. 

I also ask Lord that you would send your angels ahead of me. That they would make my trip smooth and full of your peace.

Prayer for God’s Presence on Your Journey

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV

Lord, you say in Deuteronomy 31:6 that I should be strong and courageous because you go with me wherever I go, and will never leave nor forsake me. May your presence be with me as I take this journey. 

I know that when you are with me I can rest because I am safe. Your presence gives me peace as I patiently wait to get to my destination. 

When the Israelites were in the wilderness for forty years, they never made a move unless they were sure that you were leading the way. Lead me as I travel, and let me experience the joy of being in your presence. 

Prayer for Wisdom and Protection While Driving

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. – James 1:5

Lord, I praise you for your divine wisdom that is superior to my human wisdom. You have instructed me to ask you for wisdom in James 1:5 with the promise that you will give it to me. Today I ask that you give me the wisdom I need as I drive on my trip. 

Help me drive safely, to keep focus, and to avoid any dangers that could happen on the road.  Show me which routes to avoid, and how to navigate any traffic along the way. 

I also, ask that you would protect my car Heavenly Father. That I would have no issues with my vehicle while driving and you would give me wisdom when and where I should stop to rest and get gas.

Prayer for a Safe Flight

Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings, – Psalm 17:8 NKJV

Heavenly Father, I ask that you would be with me as I go on this flight. I pray that you would protect me and everyone on the airplane. I ask for a peaceful flight with no weather issues or turbulence. 

Lord give me peace throughout the duration of the flight and help to put my trust in You. Hide me beneath your wing where no enemy can find me. (Psalm 17:8)

Prayer for Straightening Your Path During Travel

Every valley shall be exalted, And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight, And the rough places smooth – Isaiah 40:4

Lord, you know all the obstacles, dangers, detours, and delays along the path I will take to my destination. 

I ask that you straighten my path so that I may have a smooth journey. Raise every valley, make every mountain low, straighten all crooked places, and make the rough places smooth (Isaiah 40:4).

Redirect me if I need to use another route, and remove any obstacles before I get there. Keep me from trouble! Go ahead of me and clear the way so that I will arrive in good time. 

Prayer for Blessing for Safe Travel

Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways – Psalm 128:1 NKJV

Lord, as you watch over me during my time of travel, I ask that you would bless this trip. That every where I go, every person I interact would be a blessing to me and I would be blessing to them.  I thank you for your help during my journey.  

Prayers for Protect of Sickness While Traveling

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. – psalm 91:5-7 NKJV

Lord, as I set out to travel I ask for your protection over my body. Protect me from any form of sickness that would try to attack me and cause me harm. I pray that you would strengthen my immune system and help me avoid any food that could hurt me. 

I ask for your blood to cover me, Jesus that no type of infection, virus, or physical accident would come near me. That your hedge of protection would be round about me. Thank you Lord, that I don’t have to fear and that nothing shall come near me. (Psalm 91:7)

Bonus Travel Prayer: Prayer for Safe Travel for a Loved One (Prayer for Traveling Mercies)

*This prayer can be used for a family member or friend. 

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, – 1 Timothy 2:1 NKJV

Heavenly Father, I lift up (insert name) today. I ask for them to have a safe trip and that you would protect them as they travel. Set your angels to go before them and with them as they go. Let no harm come near them and give them the grace they need.

Lord, I also ask that they would seek you while they travel and that they would experience your presence during this time. Draw them close to you and give them peace.

Praying as you travel will give you the assurance of the Lord’s protection. Regardless of your mode of transport…airplane, boat, car, etc…  prayer is very important as you travel. 

You don’t know what dangers that could be ahead that you need God’s help to overcome. God always protects us even from dangers we don’t know about. He is a good God!

I encourage you to pray the Word of God because it is powerful in the spirit realm. Trust that God will always be with you along the way, because He is. He has a purpose for your life, and wants you to fulfill and complete the assignment He has set for you on earth.

It is common for people to pray for their loved ones before they travel. An Adventure to Remember

Last month we embarked on a trip we’ve been planning since before we got married over 16 years ago: New Zealand ! Richard was born there and has family there, and we’ve been wanting to go for years. But it seemed like every time we tried to make the trek, something always prevented us from going, whether it was work, a new baby, health concerns, or moving.

But this year, despite going through one of our most challenging years (currently in upheaval with our home being damaged from toxic smoke from a landfill fire), we decided to go anyway. We decided, if we wait for a perfect time to travel, we’ll never go anywhere!

And honestly, it was the perfect time to go — our kids are at such a fun age (9 & 11) and old enough to always have this as a core memory. They got to meet their great-grandfather, aunties & uncles, and cousins they’ve never met before. Not to mention all the breathtaking scenery, new foods, and memorable experiences we all had. The boys even got to sit in the cockpit of our first plane as we boarded!

Since we haven’t traveled in a while and this was the longest flight I’ve ever been on (14+ hours!) I needed some tools to help me stay calm. God’s Word is at the top of the list, of course. I thought maybe you could also use some inspiring bible verses to help you stay calm and trust God as you travel!

28 Best Bible Verses for Travel (calm & safe travels)

These are the best bible verses I could find to bring peace while traveling. I have divided them into 3 categories: God’s protection, God’s guidance, and God is watching over you.

God’s protection (travel bible verses)

Deuteronomy 31:8.

It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

Psalm 32:7-8

You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Psalm 121:5-8

8 Powerful Prayers for Safe Travel for Loved Ones

Want safe travel for your loved ones?  Searching for the right prayer to pray?  Here are eight powerful prayers you can pray for your family when they travel.  These are representative of the loved ones in your life.  You can add to any of the prayers to suit your situation or family relationship.

Whether it’s by vehicle , train, boat, or plane, travel can bring up concerns regarding safety.  When the travel involves people in our family we love, the concern can increase dramatically. It doesn’t matter if our loved ones are behind the wheel or if there’s a pilot or other professional, the experience is still stressful. Knowing that you can lift them up in prayer can be a comforting practice, as you realize that God is present with them:

“ The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” ( Deuteronomy 31.8, NIV ).

While we know that accidents do happen , we still want to continue in hope and faith that God can, and will, keep our family safe and secure when they travel.  It doesn’t matter whether a loved one is going down the street to the store, across the state to school, or to the other side of the planet for vacation, we want them to return to us in one piece.

You may find peace and assurance as you read scripture and pray for them.  A favorite of mine has always been:

“ If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast” ( Psalm 139.9-10, NIV ).

It doesn’t matter where we go, God is already there with us.  There is no place we can go, or our loved ones can travel to, that God is not present.  Isn’t that a wonderful piece of truth to grab hold of as you pray for your family?

Make these prayers a regular habit in your family.  And feel free to write your prayer requests at the end of this article.

Prayer for Safe Travel for Mother

Dear God, I pray for my mother today.  She is set to fly from her home to come see us and she hasn’t been on an airplane in several years.  I pray for her safety at each point in her journey .  She usually has someone with her but this time she’s traveling solo.

Keep watch over her as she drives to the airport and goes through security.  Guide the plane safely here and enable the pilots to focus well as they takeoff and land.  I pray for me to be attentive as I drive to pick her up and bring her to our house.

I look forward to her visit and so I pray for her safe travel in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Safe Travel for Father

Lord, my dad has to travel across the country for a business meeting this week.  I ask you to keep him safe throughout the whole travel experience.  I know there’s nothing to fear and so I place him in your hands of protection.

I pray he gets the rest he needs so when he’s driving during the week, he remains focused on the traffic.  I pray for his airplane to get him there safely and return him home safely .  Strengthen his immune system as he will be around many large groups of people during this trip.

I pray for his safety in the strong name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Safe Travel for Son

My son has his first spring break trip in a couple of days, Lord, and I’m concerned for his safety.  He’s old enough to travel on his own, but I ask that you keep watch over him when I cannot be there.

He has to grow up and accept responsibility for himself and I have to grow in my trust of his decision-making ability.  I pray he will remember all the things we’ve taught him about how to act in public and around other people.  Keep him safe from harm due to the actions of others.

Guide my son and his group as they drive down there and throughout the week.  I pray this, trusting in the God who saves us through Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Safe Travel for Daughter

Lord Jesus, can you watch over my daughter this week?  She’s going to visit our extended family for a couple of weeks, all by herself.  It’s a nonstop flight so I’m thankful that she will not have to navigate changing planes or anything.  I just want her to arrive safe and enjoy time with the family.

I pray for her to use good judgment as she navigates the concourse here, and then the subway when she arrives there.  I ask that you surround her with your protective hand, and keep her aware of her surroundings at all times.

I ask these things through Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer for Safe Travel for Brother

I’m so happy Lord!  My brother is coming so see us!  He hasn’t seen my family in almost three years so we are looking forward to having him here.  He’s driving all the way, so I ask that keep him safe on all the roads he travels.

It’s a 15-hour trip that he says he’s going to make in one day.  Grant him refreshing sleep so he is fully attentive every hour he drives.  Keep errant vehicles away from him and may his journey be accident-free.  We just want to see him here safe and sound.

I pray for all of this through Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer for Safe Travel for Sister

Dear God, my sister is traveling tomorrow to see her boyfriend (and we think, soon-to-be fiance).  I lift her to you, that you hold her safely in your hand through each point of her trip.  She has a layover and has to change plans, so I pray there be no delays at all.

We want to not have anything happen to our loved ones, whether it’s when they are traveling , or working, or vacationing.  We don’t have to be bound up in fear or worry that something might happen.  We can lay our burdens and safety concerns at the foot of God.  We can trust that God is guiding us (and them) at every step:

” I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” ( Psalm 32.8, NIV ).

Back in ancient times, when the Hebrew people traveled regularly to Jerusalem for the different festivals, they would ordinarily sing songs along the way.  Some of those are found in the Psalms (which means songs).  A portion of one of them is worth saying and praying for.  You may wish to memorize it as your “travel prayer.”

“ The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;  the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” ( Psalm 121.7-8, NIV ).

T he older I get the more I understand why my parents wanted to know when I was going to be home and who I was riding with if I wasn’t driving.  They were concerned for my safety and well-being.  Whether I was walking down the street, taking a bus trip with school/church, or just driving to a local restaurant, safety was their number one concern.  I am so grateful for my parents and the values they have instilled in me.  Here are 6 encouraging prayers for you or your loved ones who are traveling.

The Long Haul

You know the road before me.  This is a long journey I am about to take.  I pray for a safe journey these 700 miles, Lord.  I pray that if any problems come my way that Your hand would be with me and guide me through them.  I pray for the other drivers on the road with me.  Father, I pray for good rest for us all and that cell phones will be put away so no distractions take our eyes off of the road.  Lord, You are mighty and I love You!  Amen

I’m The Passenger

Mansfield's Sarah Adkins' heart transplant journey leads to Cleveland Clinic wait list

A 2007 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School has been waiting about six months for a new heart since she joined the waiting list at Cleveland Clinic.

The woman and her family recently spoke about her life since having a left ventricular assist device surgically placed in her to help her heart pump faster, which the News Journal profiled in 2017 .

Meet your neighbor Sarah Adkins, a devout Christian who testifies to God’s power.

The 34-year-old mother turns 35 in June, but “once it’s past 25, you just stop counting,” she said with a laugh.

Family support means everything

Adkins' fiancé, Eric Vrabel, has stayed by her side the entire time.

“He’s my support animal, my security blanket,” Adkins said. “If it wasn’t for him, I would’ve quit. He’s my strength, along with my children.”

Her children — Zoey, Zane, Brently and Kimber — range in age from 9 to 12.

Vrabel had come back into Adkins' life shortly before her diagnosis of heart failure at age 27. “We dated briefly in high school, I came back in the picture in 2013,” Vrabel said.

He noted when Adkins got sick, she was laid up in bed. "I thought she had pneumonia or something. She couldn’t breathe."

Adkins' mother sees God in all of this.

“God brought Eric back into Sarah’s life because He knew he was going to be the perfect person that she could go through with this,” said Loretta Adkins. “It gives me chills just thinking about it, I feel like I’m going to cry. We are the sidekick to Eric.”

Her husband, Bernie Adkins, shared how they helped their daughter during the initial surgery in Columbus.

“When she was in the hospital the first time, we had to keep the kids. We wouldn’t have it any other way because that’s our daughter,” Bernie shared.

The wait for a new heart

Doctors need to ensure Adkins is the best candidate when a heart becomes available.

“I am going through doctor's appointments after doctor appointments, getting tested in every single possible way from the head to the toe to make sure everything else is healthy,” she said.

Her antibodies remain stubbornly high, though, which may delay her transplant.

“I’ve had pregnancies before, and a couple miscarriages, which causes your antibodies to go up really high. Placing a heart with me will be a lot more difficult. It could take a while,” Adkins said.

There is no average amount of time LVAD patients might learn that a heart is waiting for them. One friend was listed on the transplant list six months after receiving her LVAD.

“They listed her and 12 hours later she got the call that a heart was there. It’s really just by chance,” Adkins said.

A message of faith and awareness

Although she questioned God’s decision to permit her heart failure, Adkins has leaned deeper into her faith. She doesn’t ask "why" anymore; instead she asks “‘Why not me?"

"When I come out of this, my testimony is going to be, ‘look what God did.’ A walking miracle. I already am," Adkins said.

The effect of heart failure on her life has manifested in different ways. Her children have had genetic testing so Adkins knows what to look for if they start to show symptoms.

Already an organ donor before her diagnosis, Adkins continues to raise awareness and urges everyone to do their own research.

"The gift of life is just the best gift you can give anybody,” she said. "There’s so many people out there — not just me — there’s children dealing with this.”

Adkins wants every organ of hers to be used — eventually.

“If there's anything left that can be used, take it; I’m not taking it to heaven with me, so anybody can have it."

“My name is Alex Garland and I’m the writer director of ‘Civil War’. So this particular clip is roughly around the halfway point of the movie and it’s these four journalists and they’re trying to get, in a very circuitous route, from New York to DC, and encountering various obstacles on the way. And this is one of those obstacles. What they find themselves stuck in is a battle between two snipers. And they are close to one of the snipers and the other sniper is somewhere unseen, but presumably in a large house that sits over a field and a hill. It’s a surrealist exchange and it’s surrounded by some very surrealist imagery, which is they’re, in broad daylight in broad sunshine, there’s no indication that we’re anywhere near winter in the filming. In fact, you can kind of tell it’s summer. But they’re surrounded by Christmas decorations. And in some ways, the Christmas decorations speak of a country, which is in disrepair, however silly it sounds. If you haven’t put away your Christmas decorations, clearly something isn’t going right.” “What’s going on?” “Someone in that house, they’re stuck. We’re stuck.” “And there’s a bit of imagery. It felt like it hit the right note. But the interesting thing about that imagery was that it was not production designed. We didn’t create it. We actually literally found it. We were driving along and we saw all of these Christmas decorations, basically exactly as they are in the film. They were about 100 yards away, just piled up by the side of the road. And it turned out, it was a guy who’d put on a winter wonderland festival. People had not dug his winter wonderland festival, and he’d gone bankrupt. And he had decided just to leave everything just strewn around on a farmer’s field, who was then absolutely furious. So in a way, there’s a loose parallel, which is the same implication that exists within the film exists within real life.” “You don’t understand a word I say. Yo. What’s over there in that house?” “Someone shooting.” “It’s to do with the fact that when things get extreme, the reasons why things got extreme no longer become relevant and the knife edge of the problem is all that really remains relevant. So it doesn’t actually matter, as it were, in this context, what side they’re fighting for or what the other person’s fighting for. It’s just reduced to a survival.”

A blunt, gut-twisting work of speculative fiction, “Civil War” opens with the United States at war with itself — literally, not just rhetorically. In Washington, D.C., the president is holed up in the White House; in a spookily depopulated New York, desperate people wait for water rations. It’s the near-future, and rooftop snipers, suicide bombers and wild-eyed randos are in the fight while an opposition faction with a two-star flag called the Western Forces, comprising Texas and California — as I said, this is speculative fiction — is leading the charge against what remains of the federal government. If you’re feeling triggered, you aren’t alone.

It’s mourning again in America, and it’s mesmerizingly, horribly gripping. Filled with bullets, consuming fires and terrific actors like Kirsten Dunst running for cover, the movie is a what-if nightmare stoked by memories of Jan. 6. As in what if the visions of some rioters had been realized, what if the nation was again broken by Civil War, what if the democratic experiment called America had come undone? If that sounds harrowing, you’re right. It’s one thing when a movie taps into childish fears with monsters under the bed; you’re eager to see what happens because you know how it will end (until the sequel). Adult fears are another matter.

In “Civil War,” the British filmmaker Alex Garland explores the unbearable if not the unthinkable, something he likes to do. A pop cultural savant, he made a splashy zeitgeist-ready debut with his 1996 best seller “The Beach,” a novel about a paradise that proves deadly, an evergreen metaphor for life and the basis for a silly film . That things in the world are not what they seem, and are often far worse, is a theme that Garland has continued pursuing in other dark fantasies, first as a screenwriter (“ 28 Days Later ”), and then as a writer-director (“ Ex Machina ”). His résumé is populated with zombies, clones and aliens, though reliably it is his outwardly ordinary characters you need to keep a closer watch on.

By the time “Civil War” opens, the fight has been raging for an undisclosed period yet long enough to have hollowed out cities and people’s faces alike. It’s unclear as to why the war started or who fired the first shot. Garland does scatter some hints; in one ugly scene, a militia type played by a jolting, scarily effective Jesse Plemons asks captives “what kind of American” they are. Yet whatever divisions preceded the conflict are left to your imagination, at least partly because Garland assumes you’ve been paying attention to recent events. Instead, he presents an outwardly and largely post-ideological landscape in which debates over policies, politics and American exceptionalism have been rendered moot by war.

‘Civil War’ Is Designed to Disturb You

One thing that remains familiar amid these ruins is the movie’s old-fashioned faith in journalism. Dunst, who’s sensational, plays Lee, a war photographer who works for Reuters alongside her friend, a reporter, Joel (the charismatic Wagner Moura). They’re in New York when you meet them, milling through a crowd anxiously waiting for water rations next to a protected tanker. It’s a fraught scene; the restless crowd is edging into mob panic, and Lee, camera in hand, is on high alert. As Garland’s own camera and Joel skitter about, Lee carves a path through the chaos, as if she knows exactly where she needs to be — and then a bomb goes off. By the time it does, an aspiring photojournalist, Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), is also in the mix.

The streamlined, insistently intimate story takes shape once Lee, Joel, Jessie and a veteran reporter, Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), pile into a van and head to Washington. Joel and Lee are hoping to interview the president (Nick Offerman), and Sammy and Jessie are riding along largely so that Garland can make the trip more interesting. Sammy serves as a stabilizing force (Henderson fills the van with humanizing warmth), while Jessie plays the eager upstart Lee takes under her resentful wing. It’s a tidily balanced sampling that the actors, with Garland’s banter and via some cozy downtime, turn into flesh-and-blood personalities, people whose vulnerability feeds the escalating tension with each mile.

As the miles and hours pass, Garland adds diversions and hurdles, including a pair of playful colleagues, Tony and Bohai (Nelson Lee and Evan Lai), and some spooky dudes guarding a gas station. Garland shrewdly exploits the tense emptiness of the land, turning strangers into potential threats and pretty country roads into ominously ambiguous byways. Smartly, he also recurrently focuses on Lee’s face, a heartbreakingly hard mask that Dunst lets slip brilliantly. As the journey continues, Garland further sketches in the bigger picture — the dollar is near-worthless, the F.B.I. is gone — but for the most part, he focuses on his travelers and the engulfing violence, the smoke and the tracer fire that they often don’t notice until they do.

Despite some much-needed lulls (for you, for the narrative rhythm), “Civil War” is unremittingly brutal or at least it feels that way. Many contemporary thrillers are far more overtly gruesome than this one, partly because violence is one way unimaginative directors can put a distinctive spin on otherwise interchangeable material: Cue the artful fountains of arterial spray. Part of what makes the carnage here feel incessant and palpably realistic is that Garland, whose visual approach is generally unfussy, doesn’t embellish the violence, turning it into an ornament of his virtuosity. Instead, the violence is direct, at times shockingly casual and unsettling, so much so that its unpleasantness almost comes as a surprise.

If the violence feels more intense than in a typical genre shoot ’em up, it’s also because, I think, with “Civil War,” Garland has made the movie that’s long been workshopped in American political discourse and in mass culture, and which entered wider circulation on Jan. 6. The raw power of Garland’s vision unquestionably owes much to the vivid scenes that beamed across the world that day when rioters, some wearing T-shirts emblazoned with “ MAGA civil war ,” swarmed the Capitol. Even so, watching this movie, I also flashed on other times in which Americans have relitigated the Civil War directly and not, on the screen and in the streets.

Movies have played a role in that relitigation for more than a century, at times grotesquely. Two of the most famous films in history — D.W. Griffith’s 1915 racist epic “The Birth of a Nation” (which became a Ku Klux Klan recruitment tool) and the romantic 1939 melodrama “Gone With the Wind” — are monuments to white supremacy and the myth of the Southern Lost Cause. Both were critical and popular hits. In the decades since, filmmakers have returned to the Civil War era to tell other stories in films like “Glory,” “Lincoln” and “Django Unchained” that in addressing the American past inevitably engage with its present.

There are no lofty or reassuring speeches in “Civil War,” and the movie doesn’t speak to the better angels of our nature the way so many films try to. Hollywood’s longstanding, deeply American imperative for happy endings maintains an iron grip on movies, even in ostensibly independent productions. There’s no such possibility for that in “Civil War.” The very premise of Garland’s movie means that — no matter what happens when or if Lee and the rest reach Washington — a happy ending is impossible, which makes this very tough going. Rarely have I seen a movie that made me so acutely uncomfortable or watched an actor’s face that, like Dunst’s, expressed a nation’s soul-sickness so vividly that it felt like an X-ray.
