Todd Chrisley to far-flung flamingos: Florida's Top 10 weird or eye-popping moments from 2023

florida cruise and stay 2023

The year is coming to an end, and 2023 is one for the books.

Just about every part of Florida had its share of peculiar news this year, with headlines that might make you do a double take (or say, "only in Florida...").

From celebrities moving to the Sunshine State to hurricanes relocating flamingos , modern-day leprosy, and clams featured on Saturday Night Live , we curated a list of 10 "weird" Florida news from 2023.

Here's a recap of 2023's only-in-Florida moments, which highlights stories covered by reporters across the USA TODAY network.

Reality TV's Todd Chrisley becomes a Florida resident... in prison

Reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley are slated to leave prison earlier than anticipated.

According to prison records, the “Chrisley Knows Best” stars had their sentences reduced. The Chrisleys were found guilty of defrauding community banks of millions in fraudulent loans, which funded their luxurious lifestyle.

Todd is serving at the Federal Prison Camp in Pensacola, a minimum security institution . Julie was originally slated to serve at the Federal Correctional Institute Marianna SCP in Jackson County; However, the matriarch was moved to the Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Chrisleys shot to fame in the 2010s thanks to their hit series on USA Network, which followed the multimillionaire real estate tycoons and their family's lavish lifestyle in Atlanta and Nashville.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed in September that the prison sentences of the Chrisleys were reduced. Todd will be released on Jan. 22, 2033, two years sooner than his original sentence. Julie's sentence was reduced by 14 months and will now be released on Oct. 19. 2028.

Crocodile (!) sightings in Florida neighborhoods

It's pretty common to see alligators in Florida. But, crocodiles? Not so much.

But in April, an American crocodile was spotted by Ian Gronosky in Melbourne Beach. According to Gronosky, the crocodile was captured, had a transmitter added, and was released in the Archie Carr Wildlife Refuge with the aid of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Then, on May 18, the Satellite Beach Police Department got a call about a crocodile on a driveway on State Road 513, and apparently, the reptile ventured into an office plaza.

Police enlisted the help of the FWC and a trapper to safely relocate the tagged crocodile.

The May crocodile sighting was the third in just over a month and the fourth time a crocodile has been recorded in the Brevard beachside area in less than six months .

Florida Emergency Alert test gets sent at 4:45 a.m. by accident

It was a 4:45 a.m. Eastern Time rude awakening for many Floridians on April 20.

The unscheduled wake-up call was a loud buzz emitting from phones with the text “EMERGENCY ALERT: TEST - This is a TEST of the Emergency Alert System. No action is required.”

It was even scarier for Android users who first saw "Emergency alert: Extreme" when they picked up their phones (followed by the same test acknowledgment in non-bold text).

People from all parts of Florida , including those in the Central Time Zone who got the alert at 3:45 a.m. their time, flooded social media with a mix of disbelief and anger asking what happened.

About four hours after the alert went out, state officials acknowledged the alert was a mistake.

"This alert was supposed to be on TV, and not disturb anyone already sleeping," the Florida Division of Emergency Management said on Twitter (now X).

Aber-clam Lincoln: A Florida mollusk's viral Florida journey

A clam initially believed to be 214 years old was found at Alligator Point and was released into the Gulf of Mexico in February by his caretakers.

Said to be born the same year as President Abraham Lincoln, the mollusk was nicknamed Aber-clam Lincoln.

The revelation, which captured worldwide attention, began to unravel when marines scientists disputed the age and type of clam. The organization that found the clam issued a lengthy clarification acknowledging the "misinterpretation of a scientific paper that explains the proper method of aging this species of clam."

(Though, since the exact age of the clam can only be determined by counting the striations within the shell and not on the shell’s exterior, the only way to find out its true age would be to kill it.)

The clam's celebrity status was cemented during the Weekend Update segment of "Saturday Night Live" on March 4, where it became the subject of a joke related to the death of the man it was named after. It also made it to the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Seven Florida beaches make top 10 'deadliest' list

Shark attacks: Florida is the shark bite capital of the world, but attacks are down in 2023

Actor Scott Baio moved to Florida after trashing California online

Sorry, West Coast. Actor  Scott Baio left California for Florida − and he's apparently living his best life on the East Coast now.

The actor best known for "Happy Days" and "Charles in Charge" reportedly left the Golden State for the Sunshine State in April on account of California's homelessness issue. According to Manatee County property records, his wife Renee Baio bought a home in Bradenton .

On April 20, the 62-year-old retired actor  tweeted a photo of himself and his wife at the beach with the caption "Living our best life in Florida." On May 3, he tweeted about  why  he left California for Florida:

"After 45 years, I’m making my way to finally “exit stage right” from California," the post said , before citing statistics from a 2022 report by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.

19-foot Burmese python caught in South Florida, the largest python on record

Hunters in South Florida caught the largest Burmese python ever measured back in July, which measured to be about the average height of an adult giraffe.

The 19-foot python was caught in the Big Cypress National Preserve in eastern Collier County by college students and Naples-area hunters.

USA TODAY Network visuals journalist Andrew West got an up-close look at the historic catch with his video camera when the python was put on display at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida located in Naples.

South Florida has now produced the two longest Burmese pythons on record. The previous record was 18 feet, 10 inches long, and that snake was caught about 35 miles west of Miami in October of 2020.

Report: Some Florida pythons may actually be a mix of multiple snake species

It's not just Burmese pythons: Green anacondas may be breeding near Naples

Florida sees an increase in leprosy cases, CDC reports

Rising evidence is pointing to the possibility that leprosy has become endemic in the southeastern U.S. with Florida being named among the top reported states.

According to a research letter published in August, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that Florida is witnessing an increase in leprosy cases.

Leprosy, scientifically known as Hansen's disease, is a chronic infectious disease that primarily affects the skin and peripheral nervous system.

While the number of reported leprosy cases has grown across the country, Florida stood out in the report for two reasons: Central Florida alone accounted for nearly 20% of the total number of cases reported nationally, and several new-case patients in central Florida demonstrated no clear evidence of zoonotic exposure or traditionally known risk factors.

Flamingos spotted all over Florida (and other states) after Hurricane Idalia

Hurricane Idalia is credited for delivering a flamingo-palooza to the Eastern United States.

They started showing up all over Florida, on both coasts and the northern Gulf Coast, as Idalia passed in late August and early September.

It was the first time a flamingo had ever been documented in places like Alachua County.

But it wasn't the first time a flamingo had been blown to Tallahassee, where Pinky blew into the St. Marks National Wildlife area with Hurricane Michael in 2018 and stayed 5 years but has not been seen since October, when flamingos that arrived with Idalia departed.

No one knows exactly how many flamingos landed in Florida, but some ornithologists have speculated there may have been as many as 70.

Shark attacked a Florida fishing boat 8 times, destroying the motor

A fishing boat after some cobia off the Palm Beach coast over the summer was violently and repeatedly attacked by a bull shark, shaking the craft "like a bag of popcorn," according to fishing boat captain Carl Torresson of Slob City Charters out of Riviera Beach.

Josh Jorgensen, host of the popular  BlacktipH Fishing YouTube channel , posted  aerial footage to Instagram  of what ended up being eight attacks that left the boat's engine with "astronomical" damage.

The middle of the engine was completely ripped out, Torresson said.

"The boat was shaking like a bag of popcorn. Like literally, I was shaking like an earthquake," Torresson said. "I was like, what’s going on? I went back there and I noticed it was a shark doing it. I’m like, are you kidding me? This is like a ride from Universal Studios.”

Hurricane Ian effect: Southwest Florida saw fewer visitors in 2023. What to know

florida cruise and stay 2023

Southwest Florida saw fewer visitors in 2023.

Visitor numbers dropped noticeably over the year, in both Lee and Collier counties.

While the slowdown is blamed on myriad factors, Hurricane Ian is a major one, at least in Lee, as the county is still recovering from the storm's direct and devastating blow in September 2022.

“The decline in tourism metrics in Lee County is largely due to a significant loss of hotel rooms and vacation rentals in coastal areas," said Tamara Pigott, the county's tourism director, in a statement.

At last count, 3,431 of the county's nearly 14,500 hotel rooms remained offline. Based on that calculation about 76.5% of them are open (including new ones built since Ian).

There's a lot more to the tourism story than Ian, however.

Experts, including Pigott, point to a "normalization" in visitation seen across Florida, with Americans now traveling more like they did before COVID-19 hit – venturing farther from home by air and sea.

"In 2021 and 2022, many domestic travelers decided to travel within the country and did not take cruises resulting in record-breaking tourism metrics," Pigott said. "However, in 2023, many domestic travelers went abroad, and the number of cruise passengers reached pre-pandemic levels."

Joseph St. Germain, president of Downs & St. Germain, a tourism consultant for Lee and Collier, said those broader trends impacted tourism in both counties last year – in much the same way.

For the first time in a long time, the U.S. saw a "travel deficit" in 2023, he noted, with the number of Americans taking trips abroad exceeding the number of international visitors coming into the country. That phenomenon filtered down to Florida – and Southwest Florida.

"It was a major shift," St. Germain emphasized.

He shared that he never expected the cruise industry to make such a quick comeback in the aftermath of COVID.

Other factors impacting tourism in Southwest Florida may include "Florida fatigue," after so many people visited the state, or traveled within the state, after the spread of COVID globally.

"I've heard that anecdotally," St. Germain said of the tired of traveling here concept. "Yet, I have yet to see hard data supporting that."

In case you missed it: Collier County saw a near-record number of tourists in 2022

And: Long-time hotelier with Hilton Naples receives Tourism Legacy Award in Collier County

In 2020 and 2021, Southwest Florida saw more in-state visitors than usual, with many Florida residents choosing to travel closer to home and to less crowded, open spots, due to the pandemic. In those years, the region also saw more visitors driving here from nearby states, for the same reasons.

In 2021, Florida attracted nearly 118 million domestic visitors, setting a new record, in part due to COVID-related lockdowns and travel restrictions in other states. Gov. Ron DeSantis moved quickly to reopen Florida after a brief shut down.

Last year, Florida had about 135 million tourists in total, according to Visit Florida, the state's tourism marketing agency. That's down by 1.7%, from roughly 137.4 million in 2022, an all-time record high.

The state saw nearly 123 million U.S. tourists last year, a 3.8% drop from almost 127.8 million in 2022, with industry analysts citing more competition from other states and countries as a primary factor in the decline.

Here's a closer look at the visitor statistics for Southwest Florida last year, based on research by Downs & St. Germain:

Collier County: room nights, visitors numbers decline

Visitor numbers fell to 2.75 million, or by nearly 5% over the year.

The number of room nights booked declined by roughly the same percentage.

The occupancy rate dropped to 57.8%, compared to 60.9% in 2022.

Over the year, direct spending by tourists declined by 6.8% to $2.62 billion. Total economic impact was down by 12.6%, dipping to $3.67 billion.

The average daily room rate registered at $308.64, down from a high of $328.35 in 2022.

Lee County: visitor numbers, spending decrease

Visitor numbers declined to 2.97 million, down by more than 29% over the year.

The number of room nights booked also fell by more than 26%.

The occupancy rate rose slightly to 55.2%, in part reflecting a smaller inventory of rooms, due to damage from Ian.

Over the year, direct spending by tourists decreased by nearly 27% to $2.89 billion. Total economic impact declined by nearly the same percentage to $4.63 billion.

The average daily room rate also came in lower, as it did in Collier, reflecting weaker demand.

What's ahead?

Looking ahead, Pigott said: “For 2024, Lee County has a more positive outlook than 2023, but the area will continue to recover from the impact of Hurricane Ian.”

Collier's tourism industry bounced back more quickly from Ian, with much less damage to its hotels, resorts and attractions, but it's not without challenges, including steeper competition and continued economic uncertainty, which make it even more difficult to predict where visitor numbers might land in Southwest Florida this year.

"We're early in 2024, and it's an election year," St. Germain said. "There is a lot of things that can affect decision-making when it comes to travel. We'll see how it goes."

Holland America wants travelers to live on a cruise ship for 4 ½ months while it sails to 39 countries on all 7 continents — see what it'll be like

  • Holland America Line announced a 2026 around-the-world cruise .
  • The 132-day itinerary includes 47 ports in 39 countries on all seven continents.
  • Longer sailings like this one are all the rage right now.

Insider Today

In 2026, the only flight you'll have to take to visit 39 countries in less than half a year is the one from your home to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The catch? From there, you can travel around the world on a 25-year-old ship.

If the concept sounds familiar, it's probably because you're thinking of Royal Caribbean's nine-month Ultimate World Cruise , one of TikTok's first obsessions in 2024.

Royal Caribbean's around-the-world sailing isn't a one-off. Quite the opposite: It's part of a growing interest in longer cruises.

And companies like Holland America have taken note of this shift. To satisfy travelers' appetite for extended sailings, the cruise line released a slate of itineraries ranging from 25 to 59 days long this time last year. Most are set to sail roundtrip, to, or from North America.

But none of these one to two-month cruises compare to the cruise line's new 2026 "Grand World Voyage," a whopping 4 ½-month journey to all seven continents.

Holland America says its 1,432-guest Volendam ship will set sail in January 2026 on an "east-to-west route" from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to 47 ports in 39 countries on all seven continents.

From sunny Florida, the ship will sail down to chilly Antarctica by way of eastern South America.

florida cruise and stay 2023

Volendam is scheduled to spend four days around Antarctica. Good luck on the infamous Drake Passage .

The icy destination isn't common on most around-the-world itineraries. But the cruise line seems partial to it: Holland America's 133-day "pole-to-pole" cruise , sailing to Antarctica and the Arctic Circle, is scheduled for January 2025.

From the itinerary's southernmost destination, the ship is set to venture back north to the South Pacific Islands like Easter Island, New Zealand, and Australia.

florida cruise and stay 2023

Then, it will set sail to Southeast and South Asia, the Maldives, and Egypt before its final few stops around northern Europe.

With the exception of two ports in Egypt, the Middle East and Africa have been largely left off the 132-day plan.

Almost 4 ½ months and 39 countries later, the journey will conclude back in Fort Lauderdale.

florida cruise and stay 2023

It's a long itinerary for a compact ship: The 781-foot-long Volendam is one of Holland America's smallest and oldest vessels.

Compared to this older counterpart, Holland America's newest ship, the Rotterdam, is almost 200 feet longer and can accommodate 1,236 more guests. However, the cruise line tapped a ship of Volendam's size to give guests a more "intimate experience."

Holland America's vessel of choice is larger than the ones being used by more luxurious companies Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, and Silversea's 2024 world cruises, which all have guest capacities of less than 700 people.

florida cruise and stay 2023

But the Volendam is still significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise vessel of choice: The 965-foot-long, 2,476-guest Serenade of the Seas .

And unlike Royal Caribbean's new mega-ships , the Volendam has no waterslides or wild rides. Instead, the 10-deck vessel features six restaurants (including a café), five bars, two pools, and activities like pickleball courts.

Compared to other global itineraries, Holland America’s 47-port world cruise might seem light.

florida cruise and stay 2023

Ultra-luxury Regent Seven Seas and Silversea's ongoing 4 ½-month world cruises each include at least 65 ports.

But busier doesn't always mean better.

florida cruise and stay 2023

Guests will have more time to spend at the scheduled ports by sacrificing additional destinations, Gus Antorcha, Holland America's president, said in a news release. (The ship is scheduled for overnights at nine popular destinations, including Bali, Indonesia, and Papeete, Tahiti.)

A spokesperson for Holland America told Business Insider that details about the itinerary's fares aren't available yet.

Florida tourism sees mixed Results in 2023, international visitors surge despite a domestic dip

T ourism in Florida experienced a noticeable decline in 2023 compared to the record-breaking numbers of 2022, as revealed by the latest report from the Visit Florida tourism marketing agency.

>>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<<

Despite a post-pandemic resurgence in international travelers, domestic tourism waned toward the end of the year, resulting in an estimated 135.02 million tourists in 2023, down from 137.4 million the previous year.

Visit Florida President and CEO Dana Young acknowledged the challenges faced by the tourism sector, including rising travel costs and inflation, but emphasized the state’s resilience and growth throughout 2023.

“From record air travel numbers to the significant return of international visitors, Florida continues to shine,” Young stated in a prepared statement.

While international tourist numbers saw improvements, with a 15.9% increase in overseas visitors and a 22% increase in Canadian tourists during the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, overall fourth-quarter tourism numbers declined. U.S. travelers dropped by 12.1% during this period.

The competition from other states and countries that were closed longer during the pandemic posed a challenge for Florida’s tourism industry. Visit Florida focused on attracting international visitors, who typically stay longer and spend more money than domestic travelers.

The report highlighted a significant increase in people flying to the state, accounting for 37.3% of domestic visits, the largest share of air visitors since 2016.

As state lawmakers enter budget negotiations for the upcoming fiscal year, funding for Visit Florida is a point of contention.

The Senate proposed maintaining the current funding level at $80 million, while the House suggested $30 million. Governor Ron DeSantis recommended $105 million, indicating the importance of investing in tourism marketing to support the state’s economy.

Florida’s tourism industry faces challenges in the wake of the pandemic, but with strategic initiatives and adequate funding, the state aims to rebound and continue attracting visitors from around the globe.
