Polica (formed in 2011) is an American indie, synth pop, alternative rock group hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the U.S.
The band is formed of Ryan Olson on production and singer Channy Leaneagh. Leaneagh spawned from a musical family and attended Ramsey Fine Arts School where she learned to dance, play the violin and perform. After graduating from high school Leaneagh met Alexei Casselle who became an acoustic duo and in 2005 married. The pair formed folk-rock duo Roma di Luna and released three independent albums together.
After the professional break up of Roma di Luna and personal break-up of her marriage, Leaneagh was looking for something novel and Ryan Olsen invited her to join his Ganyngs supergroup project alongside Justin Vernon, P.O.S., Har Mar Superstar and members of Megafaun. After which Olsen convinced the singer to experiment with a synth pop, R&B sound and enlisted the help of Chris Bierden on bass and back-up vocals, and Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu on drums.
Poliça released their debut album in February 2012 on the label Totally Gross National Product founded by Drew Christopherson and Ryan Olsen. The album features strong manipulation of the singers voice and received positive critical acclaim. The band subsequently played SXSW festival and became known for their intense live-performances across the U.S. and Europe with their funky bass and powerful pair of drummers.
The band followed their debut up with “Shulamith” in 2013, named after the feminist Shulamith Firestone. The album reached No. 33 in the UK Albums charts and its lead single “Tiff” features the experienced voice of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.
Live reviews
Poliça....is it a Latinate name for the local force, the Spanish bobby? Apparently not. According to the Minneapolis five-piece the name is Polish for “policy”, an unwritten code that the band members live and record by, and it’s certainly done them just fine so far after two albums and a series of much-talked-about live performances. 2012’s Give You the Ghost and 2013’s Shulamith marked Poliça out as a top-notch electronic pop band with more than a hint of recycled trip hop to their remarkable rhythms. Producer and general recluse Ryan Olsen (he refuses to appear live with the band) describes the music as “Drums, bass, synths, me, women” and that’s a pretty fair reflection of what you hear when you see this band live. You’re immediately taken by the stage presence of the elfin Channy Leaneagh, who writhes and dances in front of her banks of synths before unleashing her stunning voice, which is often treated with effects that only make the impact that more powerful. Poliça use two drummers when playing live, and their timing is impeccable; you will never catch Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu out of step with each other and this means that tracks like ‘Dark Star’, ‘Lay Your Cards Out’ and the clattering ‘Chain My Name’ become powerful beyond what’s on the record, but never overpowering the captivating Leaneagh. Given Leaneagh’s passion for feminism it’s always worth sticking around for a Polica encore as you’ll hear a cover of Lesley Gore’s ‘You Don’t Own Me’. It’s stunning simply for her naked vocal, reminding you that while you can throw all the instrumentation you like at a live show, the singer will always be the star when she’s got a voice that’ll stop you in your tracks.

Unfortunately the concert was not as good as it has could have been. The sound mixing was horrible with too much und bad basses leaving Channys vocals behind. Herself seemed very shy and stressed out with very little contact to her fans. Badly there were many unknown songs and only little old ones what made the concert not very easy going. The whole gig was far too short, too with only one encore, what left me little disappointing. Hopefully Polica learns more about good live performance in the future as they are very good musicians after all.
Little lady makes big noise at the Roundhouse.
I always worry when a band uses up it's better known numbers by halfway through the concert: are they playing a short set it are they worried about keeping the crowd engaged.
Not a problem last night as this was a confident and sometimes mesmerising performance.
Two big and powerful drummers and a bassist and then Chany. Her voice is unique, even with echo and distortion. It is the songs which provides a jazz feel to some of the numbers and you can see her concetrating on the accuracy of the notes, though she seemed to be having problems with her ear piece.Perhaps a bit more contact with the crowd woukd have helped.
My other gripe is the use of pre recorded tracks. The rhythm was powerful and live but the "tunes" were all backing tracks. I'd have liked a fifth band member, even if they were just pressing buttons on a key board. Seeing no one on stage playing while music was belting out is always disconcerting: not quite live!
But I loved the range of the songs , the pounding rhythms and above all her voice.
I am still within the firm opinion that Poliça are one of the most exciting things to happen to alt-pop music in quite a long time. The debut album 'Give You A Ghost' was a masterclass in moody, dark and downtempo indietronica and quickly gained the band a cult-like following and the esteem deserved from a number of respected publications.
This evening the group is lead onto stage by a bright eyed Channy Leaneagh who comes dressed appropriately all in black. Playing their debut album in its near entirety allows the audience to step inside the twisted world and view every twist, turn and change in these complex synth pop packets. 'Amongster' is equally as brooding as the record version whilst 'I See My Mother' has a wonderfully hypnotic quality. Poliça are undoubtedly an acquired taste due to the complexity of their narratives and the sonar structures of their music yet for those who invest the time, the rewards are staggering.
Poliça far succeeded my expectations! At the start of their set they placed several songs from United Crushers. Maybe its due to not listening to the newest album enough, but it these songs did not seem to flow as well with me as I know their previous albums do. However, they looked quite in sync with what they were playing in terms of enjoyment. Then they switched to their old content... And it was magical! The music pulsed the room, Channy Leaneagh vocals were so on point, and the change in sound from new to old felt so much more natural. "Very Cruel" was explosive and spiritual. By the end, when they played a couple more songs from United Crushers, I was completely sold this new record. The lighting game was also perfect!
We saw Polica performing the final show of their United Crushers spring US tour at The Bottleneck in Lawrence,KS. Chaney was great and the band was exceptional. They had limited conversation with crowd during a 1 1/2 hour long set, but their music was very tight and well received by about 150 fans that were clearly very well versed in Polica's work.
The encore consisted of two songs including a great version of "Chain My Name" that had the crowd moving. They performed a mix of songs from their 3 albums.
Ok so the concert was good. Polica were on form, haunting music delivered with a new line up of musicians that played an array of different instruments very well. Channy was mesmeric. However Give You the Ghost was by far their best album and so it was a disappointment not to hear any of the tracks from that album, shame really because their collaboration with Stargaze is a way forward for them musically but please do not forget your roots and what you managed to produce on your own.
"Lime Habit" was performed with passion and style- as were the other tunes, but the best part was watching the dual drum sets! Most all their songs, except Lime Habit, began rather slow, yet the direction was clear and each one ended with solid vibes- just making you want more. A band going places for sure. Opening band was MOTHXR - another band who is able to creatively blend the dark side with solid rhythm: think " Stranger". Would love to see both bands again!!
She looks weird with that blonde hair. Why? you looked so beautiful with your dark hair before, going blonde is sooooooooooooo mainstream!
anyway, you're music is awesome, your live performances are great and I only hope some day you'll be allowed to play in Berghain Panorama bar, because you deserve the best possible sound on earth.
Always a pleasure to see them play live. Ive seen them many times before and I always have a great time. Her voice is freakin amazing and I love watching the two drummers get down. The best!

Poliça Share New Single “Rotting,” Announce North American Tour
The synth pop band's first new music since 2020
Poliça have unveiled their new single “Rotting” and announced a 2022 North American tour.
The ominous, haunting single is the Minneapolis-based quintet’s first new release since their 2020 album When We Stay Alive , with lead singer Channy Leaneagh’s vocals twisting and distorting over her bandmates’ eerie production. Take a listen below.
The band is also headed out on a North American headlining tour beginning April 30th with an appearance at the Midwest Music Fest in Winona, Minnesota. From there, they’ll hit major cities like Chicago, Toronto, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles before wrapping things up with an August 26th show at Turner Hall in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Get tickets here .
Back in 2020, Leaneagh sat down with Kyle Meredith for an interview about When We Stay Alive , in which she reflected on the 10 ft. fall that left her temporarily paralyzed and how the accident affected both her life and songwriting.

Pelham Police grant guided tour to Pelham seniors
Published 3:55 pm Tuesday, March 12, 2024
By Donald Mottern
By DONALD MOTTERN | Staff Writer
PELHAM – On Monday, March 4, Pelham seniors were welcomed to the Pelham Police Department for a tour of the facilities and were able to set their eyes on the members of law enforcement that protect the local community.
The visit to the Pelham Police Department was guided by Lt. Jason Vandiver and Capt. Kevin Davis with added involvement from other members of the department’s leadership. The tour included areas of the facility that aren’t often open to visitors.
“Our group was given a very informative tour,” said Katie Augsburger, senior recreation coordinator for Pelham Parks and Recreation. “We visited the 911 dispatch center, the evidence room, the municipal court, the indoor shooting range and gym.”
Senior visitors also had the opportunity to visit Chief of Police Brent Sugg and tour his personal office as well as visit and conversate with multiple police detectives that were on-site.
“The Pelham Senior Center is so happy to partner with the Pelham Police Department and we appreciate the time that was taken with our group in explaining the processes behind the scenes that help ensure the safety of the Pelham citizens,” Augsburger said.
Throughout the tour, the guests were able to ask questions that included topics like how a Taser works and how Thunder, the department’s K-9 officer, can differentiate the smells correlated to explosives and drug paraphernalia. They were also able to learn about how Thunder is able to go home at the end of the day with his handler, Officer Lee Tibbits.
“Meeting Thunder was a fun surprise for our seniors,” Augsburger said. “Thunder is such a valuable addition to our police force.”
Plans for the tour had been in the works since January and represents the latest example of cooperation between the Pelham Senior Center and the Pelham Police Department.
“Detective (Isaac) Cruz has given helpful presentations on internet safety and self-defense at the Pelham Senior Center in the past year, and our members enjoy the opportunity to meet the brave men and women who protect us every day,” Augsburger said. “I felt this would be a good way to collaborate.”
Following the center’s visit to the department, all members had lunch at Cajun Boys and Our Po Boys.
This will not be the only trip in the near future for the Pelham Senior Center either, as multiple ventures and excursions are planned for the center’s participants in the coming weeks and months.
“We will be touring the Alabama Theatre, and we will be taking a trip to visit the Amish community in Ethridge, Tennessee,” Augsberger said. “We will also be taking a trip in April to Savannah, Georgia.”

Former police officer fired after forcing arrestee to lick urine off jail floor, officials say
JACKSON, Miss. ( WLBT/ Gray News) - A former Mississippi police officer was fired after he filmed himself forcing an arrestee to lick his urine off the jail floor, officials say.
WLBT reported that 26-year-old Michael Christian Green was a patrol officer with the Pearl Police Department when the incident happened on December 23, 2023.
It all started when the detainee, identified as B.E. was arrested at Sam’s Club following a domestic incident.
Surveillance video showed B.E. attempting to tell Green that he needed to go the restroom, but he never responded, WLBT reported.
Eventually, the detainee urinated in the corner of the cell.
After Green found out, he threatened the detainee telling him to lick up the urine or get beat up, according to court documents. Green stood over B.E. while he licked up the urine and took his phone out to film the incident.
The man gagged every time he made contact with the floor. Each time, Green told B.E., “Don’t spit it out.”
The detainee was eventually allowed to leave the holding cell. However, after returning to the booking area, he repeatedly vomited in the booking area garbage can.
After officials learned about the incident, Green was relieved of his duties on December 27.
On Thursday, Green pleaded guilty to one count of acting under color of law to deprive a person of his civil rights. He faces a maximum of 12 months in prison.

When Taylor comes to town: The economic impact of the Eras Tour
Concertgoing is a serious affair, as any fan — and particularly a Taylor Swift fan — will tell you. A previous Lyft analysis found that fully 36% of Lyft-riding Eras concertgoers traveled outside their hometown for the show — more than any other fan base. But the impact of the Eras Tour can be measured not only in miles but also in dollars.
After all, when Swifties travel to see Taylor, they don’t just go to the concert. They also stay in hotels, patronize bars, and grab food or other pre-concert needs (like glitter). The Washington Post estimates that, between tickets, travel, outfits, and lodging, the average Swift fan spent $1,300 per show.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia surmises that the singer may have generated the highest revenues for the city’s hotels since COVID-19. Indeed, the economic impact was strong enough that Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, personally tweeted at Taylor requesting a visit.
To understand precisely what happens when Taylor comes to town, Lyft conducted a study across the 20 U.S. cities where Swift performed in 2023. The main finding: When a city hosted an Eras concert, the number of total Lyft rides went up an average of 7.6%. (This analysis controls for seasonality and variation in rides across weekdays.)
The Swift effect
This effect was particularly pronounced in Nashville, which saw an almost 25% jump in rides on the weekend that Swift performed. (The bump is not exactly surprising, given Swift’s roots in Nashville.) A Swift Effect of 7.6% may not seem like a huge increase compared with, say, the Super Bowl (which generated a 52% increase in rides in Phoenix last year). Still, almost half of all Swift-hosting cities saw a jump of at least 10%, and 70% of them experienced a more than 5% increase.
Venues, yes— but so much more
Unsurprisingly, stadiums (75% increase) and entertainment venues (30% increase) where Swift performed saw the biggest bump in ride activity. But hotel drop-offs also increased by 27%, mass transit by 12%, restaurants by 10%, nightlife by 7%, and airports by 5%. Meanwhile, destinations that traveling Swifties were less likely to visit — such as home addresses, offices, and health care destinations — saw almost no increase in rides.
No vacancies
According to Lyft data, Cincinnati saw the greatest increase in hotel stays for the Eras Tour (63%), which may help explain why a room at Days Inn & Suites shot up from about $72 to $1,024 per night in that window, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. In Santa Clara (57% increase), occupancy rates ranged from 98% to 100%.
When Swifties make it a night out, it’s dinner before dancing
As for restaurants, Newark received the biggest increase (33%), followed by Nashville (30%).
Bringing in back home
For Swifties in Nashville, dining is not just about the food — it is also an opportunity to pay homage to restaurants that Swift frequented when she lived there, like the Pancake Pantry, and places where she played, like Tootsies Orchid Lounge. Indeed, in calculating the Swift Effect for restaurants in Nashville, one locale stands out above all others: The Bluebird Cafe — where the singer first performed at just 14 years of age — saw a 355% increase in rides when Taylor was in town.

Vice President Kamala Harris faced cease-fire, abortion protests on Tuesday’s “Fight for Reproductive Freedom” tour
S AVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Not everyone embraced Vice President Kamala Harris at her “Fight for Reproductive Freedom” tour on February 6, 2023. Outside the event, there were activists protesting peacefully – pro-life members of Reformation Bible Church and the pro-Palestine group, Savannah 4 Palestine.
Savannah Police and organizers asked both groups to leave the property, but they stayed right where they felt their voices would be heard.
Both pregnant, Joy Chastain and Jenna Torres peacefully protested abortion.
“I just think it’s horrific to even consider taking that life away and not letting it have a choice. They deserve to be protected, and they deserve to be loved even from the very beginning,” Chastain said.
“Whatever you believe in, this is a life. These babies are alive, and they have rights, too. They have basic human rights, just like we all do. And that’s important. It’s not just important to God, it’s important to the human race,” Torres said.
Ray Shores, another protestor, calls abortion “genocide in the womb.”
“At the moment that a fertilized egg has come into creation, and God has put that in a mother’s womb, that is a human life. The only difference is the size, the dependency, the environment, and the level of education,” Shores said.
Savannah 4 Palestine held up signs and yelled chants… calling for attention to reproductive needs in Palestine as well as calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. One protestor even made it inside the event to shout “Free Palestine” before being escorted out.
A spokesperson with Savannah 4 Palestine stated in part, “Our message to VP Harris is clear, do not claim to care about reproductive rights and justice when your party has failed the American people on this issue for decades. Her visit is doubly cruel considering the violence that US-backed Israeli forces inflict on pregnant Palestinians and daily denial of adequate healthcare to all Palestinians. We say to VP Harris and the Biden administration, do not campaign on reproductive rights or any issue while you oversee the systematic denial of basic human rights to Palestinians.”
When asked if they felt their voices were heard today, that same spokesperson wrote, “It’s hard to feel like our voices are being heard today or any day as the genocide of millions of Palestinians is still ongoing. A growing majority of Americans are calling for a permanent ceasefire, yet the Biden administration fails time and time again to act. In fact, on the contrary, the administration is actively facilitating and funding the atrocities inflicted on Palestinians by Israeli forces with our tax dollars. So no, we do not feel like our voices were heard today.”
