10 tips for a memorable winter cruise experience in norway.

Spectacular Arctic landscapes and beautiful sunrises are among the reasons to take a winter cruise.

From enjoying a spectacular pink-orange sunrise over snow-covered mountains to taking part in an exhilarating snowscooter tour before the thrill of a mesmerizing northern lights display overhead, winter cruises in Norway are unique from any other kind of cruising.

However, bad weather, packing mistakes, and other misconceptions can ruin the experience. More important than anything you pack, a flexible attitude is what’s required when cruising Norway in the winter.

Start with these 10 must-know tips and you’ll be well prepared to enjoy everything the Scandinavian winter has to offer.

Choose The Itinerary With Care

There’s more choice than you might expect. British-focused lines Ambassador, P&O Cruises, Saga, and Fred Olsen Cruise Lines are among the companies offering regular nothern lights itineraries. Travelers could also consider the Norwegian coastal route .

When planning your trip, decide on your big goal first. Is it to see the northern lights and nothing else, or is it to gain a fuller appreciation of the winter including the Arctic landscapes, wildlife spotting, exploring remote communities, and exhilarating shore experiences?

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

To maximize your chances of an aurora sighting, you need to spend as many days as possible north of the Arctic circle. The best itineraries for northern lights sightings spend at least four nights in the region.

Mid-September to early November and early February to the end of March are generally considered the ‘best’ times for a northern lights sighting, combined with far more daylight to enjoy the Arctic scenery, wonderful sunrises, and daytime activities.

Ports such as Kristiansund are attractive in the winter.

If seeing the northern lights isn’t your number one priority, consider a Christmas-themed cruise, or a cruise with onboard wildlife experts to help you spot whales, sea eagles, and more.

Expect Some Bad Weather

A winter cruise goes hand-in-hand with the risk of poor weather. Temperatures of below freezing are a given, but wind chill can make it feel much colder. If you’re sailing during a cold snap, temperatures in destinations such as Alta and Kirkenes can fall below -25°C (-13°F).

Winter storms involving high winds and rough seas are also possible. If you suffer from travel sickness, think carefully about whether the higher chance of rough seas is worth it. If so, it’s worth booking a cabin on a lower deck, as close to midship as possible. Avoid premium suites located at the very front or back of the ship.

Also bear in mind that poor weather can result in the outside decks being closed for safety concerns.

Expect Itinerary Changes

Missed ports are not uncommon in the cruising world, but the chance of it happening in the winter is significantly higher. Winter storms and rough seas can result in delays to arrivals or departures, or even port cancellations. Keep this in mind if you’re booking independent shore experiences.

Set Realistic Expectations For Northern Lights

Aurora hunting on a cruise ship offers many advantages over land-based tours. Because the ship is moving, thick cloud cover overhead isn’t as much of a disappointment as it would be on land. In 15-30 minutes, you may find clearer skies.

However, there are many misconceptions about the northern lights that impact expectations. Perhaps the biggest of them all is that photographs are an accurate representation of what we see with the human eye.

As with all nighttime photography, modern cameras enhance light with long exposures. This means an aurora display rarely appears as intense in person as it does in photographs.

Northern lights cruises are a good way to see the aurora borealis in Norway.

That being said, by focusing on the sky, not cameras or digital screens, human eyes do adjust to the darkness and after time, you’ll be able to appreciate the delicate colors and movement of nature’s light show.

Make The Most Of Winter Experiences

Even if your priority is to see the northern lights, take advantage of the limited daylight to immerse yourself in winter activities. Even if the aurora doesn’t appear on your voyage, you’ll still go home with good memories.

Photography opportunities abound north of the Arctic circle. Listen out for announcements of notable sights along the way. On the Norwegian coastal voyage, photography opportunities are almost endless as the ship is rarely more than a mile or two from land.

Although expensive, shore excursions offer unique winter experiences. Activities such as dog sledding and snowmobile tours often sell out in advance of cruises. Ice fishing and snowshoeing tours are among the other activities to consider.

Pack With Care

For a winter cruise, packing choices can make or break your experience. The combination of low outside temperatures, strong winds, and a warm ship interior requires a versatile wardrobe.

Make sure you can cover all extremities, including thick and thin socks, gloves, a hat, and a neck warmer. Windproof and waterproof outer layers are also essential items.

Although it’s possible to buy anything you’ve forgotten in Norwegian stores, prices are high and you’ll waste valuable time that could otherwise be spent exploring destinations.

Don’t Ignore The Sun

Although not an issue in December and January, winter cruises later in the year can produce an unlikely enemy: the sun.

In February and March, the direct sunlight can be dazzling, something that is enhanced by the glare from the snow, and sunburn is absolutely possible. Although it may amuse your family and friends, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential items to pack for a winter cruise.

Stay Hydrated and Moisturized

It’s easy to forget that cold weather can be dehydrating, especially if you’re not used to the conditions. It’s also much easier to miss the signs of dehydration when it’s cold, so take a water bottle and make it a habit on your cruise to take regular sips throughout the day.

Dry air is another issue with winter cruising that can surprise people. Static shocks from door handles and other surfaces should be expected.

Your skin can take a battering from the dry air, strong winds, and sun exposure. Always wear gloves when outdoors, and use moisturizer daily, especially on your hands and face.

Dress Well In Layers

Don’t pack your luggage full of your warmest clothes. Do as the Scandinavians do and dress in layers . Layering allows for easy adaptation to fluctuating temperatures, providing warmth outdoors while enabling comfort indoors without overheating.

Start with moisture-wicking base layers (merino wool is best) to keep you dry, add thin or thick insulating layers for warmth, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect against harsh weather.

This approach ensures that you can enjoy the stunning landscapes, participate in excursions like dog sledding or aurora hunting, and comfortably transition back to the ship's cozy interior.

Choose Suitable Footwear

Step off the ship in the winter and you may be shocked at the amount of ice underfoot. Ice can often be hidden by fresh snowfall, so always take care when walking.

Although gravel is often put out on sidewalks, Norwegians have spent a lifetime walking on snow and ice so mitigation measures aren’t always prioritized. Hiking boots with grippy soles may not be suitable for the ice, so consider purchasing a pair of strap-on spikes or other traction devices.

DAY 1 : Bergen

Sailing The Svalbard Express

Welcome to  Bergen ! Your voyage begins in this beautiful city on the west coast of Norway. What began as a small village was developed by King Olav Kyree in 1070 AD and is now Norway’s second largest city. The majestic peaks that famously surround the city give Bergen its nickname, “The City of Seven Mountains”.

Nestled in Bergen’s center is Vågen Bay, the historic core of the city, and home to the UNESCO-listed Bryggen quarter made up of charming cobblestone streets and local boutique shops. Across from Bryggen, you’ll find the fish market, which cooks up fresh and delicious seafood dishes to feast on.

Before you board MS Trollfjord, visit our comfortable guest lounge at the Bergen Terminal. Here, you can talk to staff about securing a spot on any optional excursions still available.

Once we’ve welcomed you aboard, you’ll meet your ship’s  Coastal Experience Team , who will be your hosts and guides to the Norwegian coastline and Svalbard. Get acquainted with your shipmates and take some time to get comfortable in your new home-away-from-home.

Enjoy your first meal aboard the ship, and watch the row of colorful buildings on the seafront get smaller behind you as you sail into the Norwegian Sea.

DAY 2 : Åndalsnes

Alpine village by the fjord

Located along the Isfjord, Åndalsnes is a picturesque coastal town, home to about 2,000 people.

The literal highlights of Åndalsnes are the mountains that tower over the town. Experience the Norwegian concept of  friluftsliv  – a love of the outdoors – through a variety of activities, such as hiking to Rampestreken viewpoint.

For an easier way to take in the sights, sit back for a relaxing ride on the Romsdal Gondola or travel the winding Trollstigen Pass by bus. Whichever activities you choose, this day will bring you the best views of the Isfjord, Romsdalsfjord, and surrounding peaks.

  • Hairpin Bends & Soaring Mountains - Trollstigen Scenic Bus Tour Join this bus tour along iconic hairpin bends that wind their way through lush valleys and dramatic mountains.
  • Stand-Up Paddle Board in Åndalsnes  Enjoy a duck’s view of the Istra River and surrounding towering peaks as you stand-up paddleboard (SUP) its calm, green waters.

DAY 3 : Træna

Norway’s oldest fishing community

Træna is an archipelago that sits along the  Helgeland coast  at the edge of the Arctic Circle, 33 nautical miles northwest of the mainland. Made up of around 500 islands, islets, and skerries, only four are inhabited year-round.

Spend the afternoon in one of Norway’s oldest fishing communities. If weather permits, you might be able to enjoy such activities as hiking and biking, or even island hopping.

With a large population of  Sea Eagles , birdwatching is another activity you won’t want to miss. For a truly authentic experience, step into the age-old shoes of a Norwegian fisherman, and cast a line under the summer sun.

When it’s time to leave in the evening, take some time to rest onboard and unwind. We’ll cross the Arctic Circle as we continue heading north, commemorating the moment with a little Norwegian ceremony.

  • Træna Island Hopping Get to know the people, wildlife, and ways of life on the beautiful isle of Selvær.
  • Træna Culture Walk – Poetry, Art, and Heritage Stimulate your senses on this fascinating guided walk through Træna’s cultural landscape and bask in the natural scenery of the islands too.
  • Arctic Dip – Sauna & Swim For an invigorating experience, enjoy a sauna in Træna’s oldest house then, if you feel like it, jump in the Norwegian Sea.

DAY 4 : Reine

The tip of Lofoten

Today, we explore the famed  Lofoten Islands . Watch for the steep mountains rising from the sea as we approach from the south in the morning.

We dock in Reine, an important – and picture-perfect – fishing village since 1743. This is one of the most-photographed landscapes in all of Norway, where red-painted  rorbuer  cling to a string of islands beneath sharp mountain ranges reflected in the waters below.

Not far to the south of Reine, at the western tip of the Lofoten archipelago, you’ll find Å, one of the best-preserved traditional fishing villages in Norway. You can visit it on an optional excursion.

At the heart of this tiny village is the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, which covers the importance and development of fishing in Lofoten over the last 250 years.

  • The Coastal Express Heritage Tour Take an exclusive tour of the Hurtigruten Museum, home to our full-sized retired ship, in our birthplace of Stokmarknes.

DAY 5 : Tromsø

Gateway to the Arctic

Tromsø  is northern Norway’s urban Arctic hotspot, boasting impressive architecture, hip restaurants, and the world’s northernmost university.

Calling into Tromsø on the way to or from Svalbard follows in the footsteps of history. Most explorers and sailors on Arctic expeditions would embark from or return to the city. We aim to dock here in the morning, giving you a whole day to explore this historic Arctic city and its surroundings.

Take your pick from a number of optional excursions. Learn more about the culture and polar history of Tromsø on a city walk, or take a scenic bus tour. You can also visit the striking Arctic Cathedral, which has an impressively large multi-colored stained-glass window. Or ride the Fjellheisen Cable Car up Storsteinen Mountain for exceptionally beautiful views of the city, mountains, and fjords.

  • Tromsø, The Arctic Capital – Summer Explore the remarkable polar heritage, modern culture, and extraordinary panoramic views of Tromsø, ‘Paris of the North’, in summer.
  • Tromsø On Foot – The City & Its Polar History Take a stroll through the fascinating history and heritage of Tromsø and discover why it’s known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’.
  • The Northernmost Brewery Let actors entertain you on this tour through Tromsø to Mack, long known as the northernmost brewery in the world.
  • Hiking with Vikings Celebrate Northern history, tradition and culture as you travel through time to the Viking age at Tønsviking Medieval homestead.
  • Explore Tromsø by E-bike  (Spring & Summer) Hop on an electric bike to explore the city known as the “Paris of the North” with ease. Enjoy a local’s-eye view as you discover little-known sights and admire the gorgeous Arctic scenery.

DAY 6 : Honningsvåg

At the top of Europe

Around mid-morning, we arrive at  Honningsvåg , the northernmost city in mainland Norway.

You have several optional excursions to pick from here. These could include taking a bus or riding a quad to the North Cape, a hike with your Coastal Experience Team, or an introduction to what life is like at 71°N.

Honningsvåg is also the gateway to the  North Cape , the northernmost point of Europe. The plateau stands 307 metres above the sea, and is just over 1,000 miles south of the geographical North Pole. Take a moment to gaze out across the sea from a top the soaring cliffs, watching the waves crash against the rocks below.

Sailing away from Honningsvåg, we’ll enjoy dramatic views of the plateau from the sea. The ship will head further into the Barents Sea, leaving mainland Norway’s coast far behind us.

  • Quad Biking to North Cape Drive your own quad bike on a thrilling adventure to continental Europe’s northernmost point.
  • The North Cape Cross the 71st parallel and visit North Cape, the northernmost point on the European continent, marked by the photogenic globe monument.
  • RIB & King Crab Experience Join this thrilling RIB safari and follow the journey of the majestic king crab, from the depths of the Barents Sea all the way to your plate.

DAY 7 : At sea

At sea around Bjørnøya

The southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago, Bjørnøya sits just past the halfway point between mainland Norway and Spitsbergen. We’ll be viewing this inaccessible land from the ship in the afternoon, so think of this as the prologue to your Svalbard adventure.

Upon seeing the island, you might notice the lack of trees, and even bushes. Very little grows here, with the land partly being covered only by a layer of moss and lichen. Whatever does grow here is fertilized by the abundant birdlife that nests on the sea cliffs. Get your camera ready to capture Little Auks, Puffins, Black-legged Kittiwakes, and Northern Fulmars flying over dramatic cliff tops and steep slopes, alongside many other seabird species.

Contrary to its name, which means “Bear Island”, the only native mammals are Arctic foxes. The island was named after a polar bear was spotted swimming in the waters nearby, but this is an unlikely sight this far south.

DAY 8 : Longyearbyen

At the edge of the world

Today, we arrive at the Svalbard archipelago and make our way up to Spitsbergen, the largest of the three main islands. Magnificent brown and green mountains rise and ripple up from the High Arctic tundra while rivers of snow-melt trickle through the valley plains, glistening under the summer sun.

Take a moment to just be here, now, in Svalbard. You’re at a latitude more than 78°N and under 820 miles from the North Pole itself. The air of this Arctic desert is fresh and pure, and temperatures in summer average between zero and eight degrees Celsius thanks to a warm northern branch of the Gulf Stream.

In early afternoon, we find Longyearbyen nestled on the banks of Isfjord. A former coal mining colony, it is the biggest settlement in Svalbard and a hub for adventure travellers, as well as scientists and engineers attached to local research projects, like the famous Global Seed Vault.

Spend some time strolling around the town, admiring its collection of galleries, pubs, restaurants, brewery, and the notable North Pole Expedition Museum.

You’ll also have optional excursions to pick from that bring you into the awe-inspiring landscapes surrounding Longyearbyen. Explore by e-bike, open boat, or on a wagon pulled by dogs. You could go on a fossil hike, or have a wilderness experience at Camp Barentz. And if you’ve ever wanted to try dog sledding without snow, this is your chance.

  • Dog Sledding on Wheels Experience the instinctive connection between human and dog as eight huskies pull you across the Norwegian summer landscape on a wheeled sled.
  • Svalbard Wilderness and History Experience Meet huskies and hear exciting experiences from mushers at Camp Barentz, before taking a trip through time at the Svalbard Museum.
  • Visit a Coal Mine of the Past Take an immersive tour of a 20th-century coal mine in Longyearbyen and learn more about the fascinating heritage of this mining town.
  • Husky Dog Wagon Ride  Enjoy an exhilarating wagon ride along Svalbard’s Arctic coastline, led by a skilful guide and a pack of powerful sled dogs.
  • Isfjord Safari by Open Boat Embark on a thrilling boat safari in the waters of Isfjorden, passing 20th-century cultural monuments that offer a window into Svalbard’s mining past.
  • Longyearbyen by E-bike  Hop on an electric bike to explore the best of Longyearbyen with ease. Learn more about the area’s mining past and get up close with local birdlife as you pedal silently through the rugged landscape.
  • Svalbard Hike and Fossil Hunt  Join a hike through Svalbard’s vast wilderness as we hunt for millennia-old fossils.

DAY 9 : Ny-Ålesund

Science on the Arctic frontier

At the tip of Brøgger peninsula, on one of Kongsfjord’s shores, is Ny-Ålesund. Like Longyearbyen, it began as a coal mine but became host to scientific stations from the mid 20th century. During the summer, there are over a hundred researchers based in the town, representing 20 glaciology and climate institutes from more than 10 countries.

Wander around what is one of the northernmost settlements in the world, drop in at the local museum and souvenir shop, or send a far-flung postcard back to friends and family from the small post office.

If you weren’t up in time to enjoy the impressive views of Kongsfjord on the way to Ny-Ålesund, make sure you’re on deck as we leave. It’s one of the largest fjords in the area, with an entrance guarded by two colossal creaking glaciers that regularly deposit ice into the fjord.

This stretch is also a good place to look out for walrus basking on the shores and for many different species of migrating birds, including puffins, king eiders, pink-footed geese, and guillemots.

Arctic fox and Svalbard reindeer can sometimes be spotted on land while the white beluga whale has been known to surface in the waters here too. If we’re very lucky, we might even see a polar bear prowling the coast for bearded and ringed seals.

DAY 10 : At sea

Leaving Svalbard

Unfortunately, it’s time for us to say farewell to Svalbard and to Spitsbergen and sail south back to mainland Norway.

On board the ship, use the day to relax. If skies are clear, enjoy some summer sun out on deck and keep on the lookout for whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

For some fascinating insights into local history and wildlife, catch a lecture delivered by the Coastal Experience Team.

Enjoy the sumptuous food and drinks on board, courtesy of our Norway’s Coastal Kitchen concept that features the finest, most flavorsome, local Norwegian produce.

You can also curl up with a good book in the lounge or chat with new-found friends in the bar while reminiscing together about your favorite experiences of the voyage so far.

DAY 11 : Senja

Exploring ‘Little Norway’

After a day at sea, we arrive back to mainland Norway.

Our first stop of the day is Tromsø, to drop off any cargo from Svalbard and pick up cargo bound for ports to the south, before we continue south to Senja. The island is one of the country’s largest, and northern Norway’s fast-rising star destination, as you’d expect for a place ranked among CNN’s top ten most beautiful islands in the world.

Often proudly described by locals as a ‘mini Norway’, Senja has a concentration of diverse landscapes that mirror different parts of the Norwegian coast, from the sandy beaches, turquoise waters and lofty mountains of its northern coast to the rocky coastline and pine forests of southern Senja and Ånderdalen National Park. You'll find rolling hills and birch forests to the east.

Disembark in the charming fishing village of Torsken and explore by bus, e-bike, on foot, or take to the fjords on a wildlife safari on one of the optional excursions.

  • Senja Wildlife Safari Embark on an exciting safari of the waters of Senja, passing lush islands and islets while looking out for seals and seabirds.
  • Scenic Guided E-bike Tour Hop on an electric bike to explore the idyllic island of Senja with ease. Enjoy breathtaking fjord views during one of Norway’s most stunning seasons.
  • Fjord Adventure by RIB Immerse yourself in local folklore and a world of natural beauty as you cruise through a trio of classic Norwegian fjords.

DAY 12 : Stokmarknes and Svolvær

Fall in love with Lofoten

Start the day with a few hours in Stokmarknes, an historic town with a special place in our hearts. It’s the birthplace of Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express.

It’s a fitting place for the  Hurtigruten Museum , where you are immersed in the atmosphere of a different era on our retired 1956 ship, MS Finnmarken, proudly encased in glass on the waterfront.

After Stokmarknes, we’ll sail via Raftsundet and Trollfjord to Lofoten. The rest of the day is all about exploring this breathtaking archipelago. Hailed as one of the most spectacular areas in all of Norway, you’ll understand why as you see its jagged green cliffs rise dramatically out of the ocean, climbing high into the sky like giant teeth.

The beating heart of the archipelago is the town of Svolvær where your ship will be based. There are shops and restaurants to enjoy, and the hours can be spent exploring and getting to know the town yourself.

To experience the mountains, islands, and villages around Svolvær, choose from a variety of handpicked top Lofoten excursions. You can go fishing, kayaking, or sit back and enjoy the incredible scenery on foot or on a bus tour.

  • Kayaking in Lofoten - Summer Experience the raw natural beauty of Henningsvær as you explore the crystal-clear waters by kayak.
  • Fishing in Lofoten - Summer Try your hand at authentic sea fishing for haddock, cod, and mackerel aboard MS Symra, a traditional Norwegian fishing boat from 1917
  • Lofoten Scenery & Henningsvær Take in the stunning summer scenery of Lofoten. See history, marine life, and timeless art at SKREI Heritage Centre, and soak up the fishing village atmosphere of Henningsvær.
  • Lofoten RIB & Sea Eagle Adventure Go in search of Sea Eagles in the skies above Lofoten aboard a RIB boat, and admire the superb scenery of this wild archipelago.

DAY 13 : Brønnøysund

Highlights of the Helgeland Coast

The ship continues south and reaches the midpoint of the Norwegian coast. This is the Helgeland Coast, a well-known stretch full of distinctive mountains that have inspired many a charming myth and local folklore.

We will base the ship in the town of Brønnøysund , which features a lovely marina and a Neo-Gothic stone church from 1870. Spend your time exploring the town or join optional excursions such as a RIB cruise.

Further along from Brønnøysund is the unique Torghatten Mountain. The first thing you’ll notice about Torghatten is the hole that pierces right through its centre. At an easy pace, it takes about an hour to reach the hole in Torghatten on an optional excursion. The panoramic view of the islands stretching out before you is well worth it.

  • Torghatten Mountain Hike Follow in the footsteps of trolls and Vikings on this excursion to a mythologised mountain with a hole right through it.
  • Brønnøysund by Bike Cycle through historical Brønnøysund uncovering the town’s secrets on the way, from the surprising church to a showroom filled with modern art.
  • Legends of Torghatten and Brønnøysund - Summer See Brønnøysund’s sights by bus then follow in the footsteps of trolls to a mythologised mountain with a hole right through it.
  • Sea Adventure by RIB Explore the landscape around Brønnøysund from water level on a thrilling RIB ride.

DAY 14 : Ålesund, The Hjørundfjord, and Sæbo

Secret of the Sunnmøre Alps

The ship will make a brief stop in the town of  Ålesund , known for its Art Nouveau architecture and picturesque position on a peninsula below Mount Aksla. If you’re joining the overland excursion to Hjørundfjord and Sæbo, this is where you disembark, or you can explore the town on foot.

Near to Ålesund, cutting through the peaks of the  Sunnmøre Alps , some 1,700 metres high, is magnificent Hjørundfjord. Its picture-perfect position embedded in the Sunnmøre Alps means it is the area’s hidden gem and a secret from most other ships.

On the banks of one of  Hjørundfjord ’s branches is the idyllic village of Sæbø. Tender ashore here and join an optional bus tour or hike excursion to explore Sæbo’s charming streets, fjord and mountain scenery, nearby villages, and local culture. If you left MS Trollfjord to go on an excursion at Ålesund, this is also where you’ll rejoin the ship.

We are fast approaching the last day of our voyage. What better way to celebrate our Svalbard Express experience than a farewell dinner on our last night.

  • Mountain Peaks & Fjords - A Scenic Bus Tour Experience the Norway you’ve always dreamed of. The dramatic mountains and fjords of the Sunnmøre Alps will make your heart soar!
  • Ålesund on Foot Explore Ålesund on this fascinating walking tour and discover some of the highlights of its remarkable Art Nouveau architecture.

The Points Guy

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

The vessel will offer 11 to 14-day voyages with most itineraries calling to guest favorite ports including Melbourne, Australia; and Napier and Dunedin, New Zealand. The season begins on Nov. 2, 2025, with a 21-day repositioning cruise from Barcelona, Spain to Cape Town, South Africa calling to sought-after destinations including Santa Maria, Cape Verde; Casablanca, Morocco; and Agadir, Morocco. During Norwegian Viva's winter season, the vessel will offer guests seven-day roundtrip Western Caribbean itineraries to Cozumel, and Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; as well as Harvest Caye, NCL's resort-style destination located in Southern Belize. On Jan. 10 and Jan. 24, 2026, Norwegian Viva will sail a 14-day Eastern Caribbean itinerary for cruisers searching for a longer warm-weather escape. The voyages will visit George Town, Cayman Islands - a first-time visit for the ship - and call to NCL's private island - Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas; Road Town (Tortola), British Virgin Islands; St. John's (Antigua), Antigua; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Cozumel, Mexico.

For a similar and extended itinerary option, the ship will also offer two 14-day Southern Caribbean cruises on Feb. 1, and Feb. 22, 2026, where the ship will visit for the first time Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Colon, Panama; and Cartagena, Colombia.

Homeporting for a second season in La Romana, Dominican Republic, Norwegian Sky is offering travelers a selection of seven, nine and 12-day roundtrip Southern Caribbean itineraries from December 2025 through April 2026 calling to a variety of picturesque ports including Oranjestad, Aruba; Kralendijk, Bonaire; Willemstad, Curaçao of the ABC islands and more. During the Jan. 5, 2026, nine-day sailing, Norwegian Sky will cruise to the southwestern coast of the Dominican Republic to make her debut in Cabo Rojo, offering guests a beautiful beach escape. These Caribbean cruises provide travelers worldwide the opportunity to enjoy these bucket-list destinations, as most visitors arriving to the Dominican Republic do not require a visa to enter the country.

SOUTH AMERICA

The South America itineraries begin with the transatlantic crossing from Lisbon, Portugal to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Nov. 20, 2025, visiting Portugal, Cape Verde, and several cities in Brazil. Norwegian Star will then embark on a 17-day cruise from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Dec. 4, 2025 calling to ports in Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile, and making its way to the South Pole as the vessel cruises by Paradise Bay and Elephant Island in Antarctica for guests to enjoy the views and wildlife from the comfort of their balcony or the ship's top deck before disembarking in Buenos Aires, Argentina. From Dec. 21, 2025 through Feb. 15, 2026, guest can also embark on 14-day roundtrip sailings from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cruise by Paradise Bay and Elephant Island in Antarctica.
