The Voyage Wooden Roller Coaster

Land, sea, airtime .

This relentless coaster is an airtime machine, with riders experiencing a feeling of weightlessness for a wooden coaster record total of 24.3 seconds. It takes the traditional out-and-back layout to the edge of insanity, with one of the steepest drops on any wooden roller coaster in the world.

The Voyage is 1.2 miles long, placing it among the planet’s top two longest wooden coasters. The Voyage also has three sections of extreme, 90-degree banking. We carved out five underground tunnels for this coaster, which is a world record. And some of those tunnels are wide enough that we roar through them twice, creating a total of eight “underground moments,” one of which includes an unforgettable “triple-down” feature.

In 2013, TIME magazine named The Voyage the top wooden roller coaster in the nation! The Voyage has also been ranked among the top wooden roller coasters in the world by Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Awards.

Is it the world’s greatest wooden roller coaster? You decide!

Tips for your visit

Work your way up the wooden coaster ladder by riding The Raven  first, then  The Legend , then finally The Voyage. For a different coaster experience, don’t forget to check out Thunderbird and Good Gravy!

Wait times tend to be longer for the front or back seats.

Wait till the afternoon to ride, as lines are shortest then.

Catch the best view of the ride from the Thanksgiving plaza.

Don’t forget to leave any loose items you wish to keep, including those in your pockets – especially cell phones and keys – in the designated area of the station so the seas don’t toss them overboard.

For a smoother ride with a view, take a front seat.  If more air time is what you’re after, head toward the back of the train.

Don’t forget to check your photo!

The Voyage is a wooden hybrid roller coaster located at Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana, USA. The ride has the most airtime of any wooden roller coaster in the world, with 24.2 seconds, in addition to three 90° banked turns and a 66° first drop. It opened in 2006 as part of the new Thanksgiving area.

In July 2005, Holiday World announced that The Voyage would be coming to the park. It would be a part of the new Thanksgiving area.

During construction, National Geographic spent a day filming the roller coaster and several interviews for a documentary titled Coasters: Riding Into the Extreme . [1]

The Voyage officially opened on May 6, 2006.

Holiday World announced that for the 2010 season, The Voyage would receive new Timberliner trains from Gravitykraft Corporation . [2] The trains were not installed, and in August 2013, the park stated that the Timberliners would not be installed. [3]

The ride has five underground tunnels and three 90° banked curves. [4]

2 trains with 6 cars per train. Riders are arranged 2 across in 2 rows for a total of 24 riders per train.

On Friday June 4, 2021, Coaster enthusiasts Dawn Jankovic and her son Gunnar Merker boarded The Voyage. During the ride, Dawn lost unconscious. Upon returning to the station, medics were called immediately and Dawn was taken to a nearby hospital where she passed away. The coaster remained closed and was inspected by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and found to be operating as intended. An autopsy had been completed but has not been released pending notification of the family. [5] [6] [7]

Holiday World released the following statement via social media:

"Earlier this evening, a female Guest returned to the station of The Voyage roller coaster unresponsive. Holiday World EMTs arrived three minutes later and immediately began to render first aid. The Guest was transported via ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Indiana. At this point, the Guest’s name has not been released.

A full inspection of the roller coaster has been performed, and it was determined that the ride operated as it was intended to.

The ride remained closed for the evening out of respect for the family.

Holiday World & Splashin' Safari officials ask for your thoughts and prayers for the Guest and her family, as well as for Team Members who were onsite." [8]

The Voyage Roller Coaster at Holiday World

The Voyage Roller Coaster has been in operation at Holiday World since 2006. Designed and manufactured by The Gravity Group with trains supplied by Philadelphia Tobbagan Company . This is the grand finale of the wooden roller coaster trilogy at Holiday World. The Raven and The Legend are good coasters, but The Voyage is a masterpiece. This is the crown jewel of the roller coasters at Holiday World.

The Voyage Roller Coaster Rider Experience

The Voyage Roller Coaster is located in the Thanksgiving section of the park. It takes its name and theme from the initial pilgrims “Voyage” to America. You must be at least 48 inches to experience this coaster. Riders are secured by a lap bar and a seatbelt. Once the train leaves the station you are brought up one of the biggest first hills you will ever see on a wooden coaster. What follows is one of the most intense and thrilling experiences we have ever had. Constant pops of airtime , the sensation of speed, turns banked so hard that they look impossible, and on and on.

The Voyage Roller Coaster entering one of its underground tunnels.

The Voyage Roller Coaster: The Good

This ride is a masterpiece of engineering. With a lot of coasters, you do that first hill and from there it begins to lose more and more momentum. We cannot fully explain it but this ride never seems to slow down! The second part of the ride after the mid-course brake run actually feels faster than the beginning!

The first drop feels unreal. It drops at such a steep angle that you will be out of your seat the entire time. The pops of airtime feel like they never end!

Whatever it is about a wooden coaster that you like The Voyage Roller Coaster will have it. Not just have it, but will do it perfectly. If you love sharp turns then this coaster’s second half will blow you away. If you just love speed then this coaster never lets up.

Sometimes with coasters that have amazing speed, they are shorter. The Voyage never feels like it is going to end! It is the only roller coaster we can ever remember thinking at one point my arms were getting tired while it was going.

We are going to be stretching here coming up with something negative. But if there is a complaint to be had about The Voyage Roller Coaster it would be that the theming is paper-thin. It is our opinion that theming will always make a ride better. With Voyage, it was barely an afterthought. Doubtless, you will care while hitting one of its 5 underground tunnels about the theming.

Also, we never like a Mid-Course break run. But for the sake of not killing the track and the trains, it is there. With how intense this coaster is with it, then it may have been the right call. The park does put on a yearly coaster event called Holiwood nights. They turn the brakes off and the coaster is even crazier.

The Voyage Roller Coaster taking one of its final turns.

A Roller Coaster built for enthusiast!

Holiday World is one of the most enthusiast-friendly parks. When they were designing the Voyage they were building it with them in mind. Former park President Will Koch has said as much. They were trying to build the ultimate coaster for those of us who love coasters. If you consider yourself a lover of roller coasters then you need to take “The Voyage” to Santa Claus, Indiana to experience what this masterpiece has to offer. Ride it in the front for the best visuals and a smoother ride. Ride it in the back if you want to have the best ride possible.

The coaster taking another sharp turn on its final run to the station.

Final Verdict

This is one of the finest pieces of thrill entertainment ever constructed. A coaster with universal approval. To repeat ourselves, this is a masterpiece. Everything you could ever want in a wooden coaster in one long ride. Because of these reasons, The Voyage Roller Coaster gets a ten out of ten. Never even considered a lower score!
