Viking Sky cruise timeline: A breakdown of what we know happened

viking sky cruise ship rescue

A Viking cruise ship needed to be evacuated over the weekend as engine trouble and stormy weather caused the ship to take on water and endanger the 1,373 passengers and crew aboard. What played out was a chaotic 48-hour nightmare.

All the important details have yet to emerge about what happened on the Viking Sky cruise ship that carried 1,373 passengers and crew, like  why the ship was traveling in dangerous weather , and Norway officials have begun investigating. We now know that low oil levels caused the engine to fail.

Accounts from passengers , a crew member and officials have provided further details as to how it all unfolded.

Here's everything we know so far about the Viking Sky cruise incident:

What was the Viking Sky's plan?

The Viking Sky, a vessel with gross tonnage of 47,800, was on a 12-day trip that began March 14 in the western Norwegian city of Bergen, according to cruisemapper.com .

The ship was visiting the Norwegian towns and cities of Narvik, Alta, Tromso, Bodo and Stavanger before its scheduled arrival Tuesday in the London-area port of Tilbury on the River Thames.

The ship started listing dangerously

The Viking Sky sailed from the northern city of Tromso bound over the weekend for Stavanger in southern Norway when the ship began struggling with engine failure, started listing dangerously, then took in water. Norwegian media reported gusts up to 43 mph and waves over 26 feet.

According to a crew member's account , exclusive to USA TODAY, the ship's four engines began shutting down in the midst of a storm that started late Friday. .

The crew member requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

More on our exclusive: Crew member recounts what happened on that stranded, storm-tossed Viking Sky cruise ship

The crisis began Saturday morning. As the ship drifted without power, the crew threw out anchors to keep it in place, fearing it would be smashed on treacherous offshore rocks. The crew member said the ship started to list, and the crew rushed to grab life jackets and distribute them to the passengers, some of them elderly.

Cellphone footage from the ship shows furniture sliding across rooms as the boat rocks.

"Everything was broken: plates, glasses, furniture," the crew member said. He said he saw a heavy grand piano go flying upside down inside a lounge.

Carolyn Savikas of Pennsylvania described the terror aboard the Viking Sky to  Norway's VG newspaper , saying she heard a "terrible crash," after which the ship rocked, and water raced in.

"We were in the restaurant when a really huge wave came and shattered a door and flooded the entire restaurant," she said. "All I saw were bones, arms, water and tables. It was like the Titanic – just like the pictures you have seen from the Titanic."

Although the crew member described the crew as well-trained for emergencies, he said he called his family at one point when the Wi-Fi was working "to say goodbye. I was thinking it was going to sink when we listed."

What first reports looked like: Cruise ship off Norway issues mayday, begins evacuating 1,300 passengers and crew

Passengers took to social media and have given interviews about what they were witnessing onboard as they waited to be rescued.

Alexus Sheppard posted a video on Twitter of severe tilting due to the rough waters. "We're waiting for evacuation by helicopter," she wrote with the hashtags #VikingSky and #Mayday.

"You could feel the ship climbing the waves and then just plummeting on the other side. Waves were rocking the sides of the ship too, and it was kind of pitching back and forth as well," Jamey Kennedy, 64, of Clinton, Tennessee, said.

How the Viking Sky rescue mission developed

After the order to evacuate came, rescuers worked all night Saturday and into Sunday to airlift more than 400 passengers (about half the total) to shore by a fleet of five helicopters flying in the dark, slowly winching people up one-by-one from the heaving ship as the waves crashed and the winds shrieked.

Despite the danger, the crew member said some passengers rushed to be airlifted, fearing the ship would sink before rescue.

To get to the life jackets, the crew member said employees had to open doors onto open decks and into the wind and form human chains to distribute the life jackets while the ship was leaning perilously close to the frigid water below.

Those involved in the rescue mission hadn't experienced a rescue this intense before .

The CHC, a helicopter service, was called to assist the rescue effort at 2 p.m. local time on Saturday. The company's mission involved 12 pilots, seven rescue swimmers, six hoist operators, two ground support engineers and a system operator.

By the numbers: Five helicopters, 28 rescuers, 464 saved: Inside the Viking Sky cruise ship rescue

Its first helicopter arrived within 30 minutes after being called, and a second one later joined to assist.

"The two helicopters worked seamlessly together in a rescue pattern that ensured one aircraft was hoisting passengers at all times," according to a post on CHC's website. "During each mission, 15 to 20 passengers were hoisted and subsequently transported to safety." Two more CHC aircraft were later sent to support the evacuations, and a fifth government-contracted aircraft arrived, as well. A total of 464 passengers were lifted off the cruise ship, per CHC's latest numbers.

Ship makes it to safety

The ship, aided by tow vessels, finally limped into the Norwegian port of Molde on Sunday, freeing the remaining 436 passengers and crew of 458.

Mission complete: Cruise ship from Norway reaches port with remaining passengers after mayday, air rescues

"All passengers and crew are safe, and passengers will be flying home starting tonight," the cruise line said  in a statement  on its website Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Norwegian time. "Throughout all of this, our first priority was for the safety and well-being of our passengers and our crew. We would like to thank the Norwegian Redningssentral and the Norwegian emergency services for their support and skill displayed in managing the situation in very challenging weather conditions."

“When we got the engine running again, we realized we were going to save ourselves," Inge Lockert, a Norwegian pilot on the ship, told the Vesteraalen newspaper.

Lockert was one of two pilots from the Norwegian Coastal Administration who boarded the ship on Saturday to help the crew take the ship into port, the Vesteraalen daily said. Only Lockert has spoken publicly.

The Viking Sky investigation begins; why the engine failed

Norwegian authorities on Monday began investigating why the cruise ship was sailing in stormy weather.

"We don't know the reason why the ship sailed, knowing such bad weather was forecast," Kurt Olsen, acting director for Norway's Accident Investigations Board, told USA TODAY. "We have a very good weather service in this country, so I would guess the crew knew everything about the forecast. How they responded will definitely be part of the investigation."

Lars Alvestad, the head of Norway's Maritime Authority, said Wednesday that low oil levels were the "direct cause" of the engine failure that stranded the Viking Sky on Saturday.

More details: Viking Sky cruise ship engines failed because of low oil levels, maritime official says

The NMA indicated in a press release that while oil in the tanks was relatively low, it was within set limits. But as the ship crossed rocky seas, movement of oil in the tanks triggered an alarm.

Olsen would not speculate why the Viking Sky captain decided to sail despite the weather warning. He said ship operations were one part of the investigation, along with a technical study of why the engines failed and a third review of how the rescue was handled.

The ultimate question: Norway wants to know why cruise ship sailed in stormy weather, forcing air evacuation

Yngve Skovly, a police inspector in the Molde region, told the  Verdens Gang  tabloid there was no suspicion of criminal behavior and the ship was too new to suspect maintenance problems. He said crucial information could be obtained from the ship's computer logs.

Torstein Hagen, chairman of ship owner Viking Ocean Cruises, said his company would conduct its own investigation and support government agencies reviewing the mishap. Police expected all passengers to be flown out of Norway by Monday night.

"The last few days have been both dramatic and hectic for guests and crew on board Viking Sky," Hagen said in the statement. "I would like to apologize for all our guests have been through."

A total of 36 people were admitted in local hospitals and as of Tuesday, one person was in critical but stable condition in an intensive care ward. Seven others were expected to be discharged later Tuesday, hospital officials said.

Despite the Viking Sky incident, cruising is one of the safest ways to travel, according to the trade group Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

Citing a 2017 study , CLIA says that although the cruise industry's capacity has grown by 48 percent, the overall number of operational incidents has declined by 38 percent.

Viking Sky passengers will begin flying home tonight

All passengers and crew aboard the Viking Sky cruise ship are safe in the port of Molde, in western Norway, and passengers will soon begin flying home, Viking Ocean Cruises said in a statement on Sunday afternoon.

With the safe arrival of the vessel in port, our live coverage has ended. For all of the harrowing details from passengers who were stranded at sea, read our story .

"We made it," passengers cheer

The Viking Sky cruise ship has docked at a quay in Molde harbor, western Norway, after a harrowing day stranded at sea.

Passengers onboard the vessel shouted, "We made it," as the ship arrived on Sunday afternoon, Norwegian state broadcaster NRK reported .

Cruise ship expected to dock at 4:30 p.m. local time

The Viking Sky cruise ship is expected to dock at 4:30 p.m. local time in Molde, a port town in western Norway, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of Southern Norway said on Twitter. Local people have been asked to stay away from the center of town as emergency services prepare for the vessel's arrival.

US Embassy consular team to assist American cruise passengers

The US Embassy in Oslo has sent a consular team to Molde, a coastal city in western Norway, to assist American citizens being evacuated from the Viking Sky cruise ship.

The embassy said it was in contact with Norwegian authorities leading the rescue effort.

"The safety and security of U.S. citizens is of the utmost importance, and we will provide more information as it becomes available," the embassy said in a statement .

Norwegian PM: "It has been a dramatic day"

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg thanked rescue workers and volunteers who had helped respond to what she called a "dramatic day" for passengers aboard the Viking Sky cruise ship.

"It has been a dramatic day for the passengers and rescue personnel on #VikingSky in #Hustadvika. Thank you to the talented rescuers, volunteers and others who have made an invaluable effort in demanding conditions," Soldberg said on Twitter.

Evacuation of passengers has ended as cruise ship travels to port

The evacuation of passengers from a cruise ship off the western coast of Norway has come to an end as the vessel safely makes its way to Molde harbor, Viking Ocean Cruises said in a statement.

Rescue teams airlifted 479 people from the vessel after it was stranded in stormy seas Saturday with 1,300 passengers and crew on board.

The Viking Sky cruise ship, which regained engine power on Sunday morning, is traveling to Molde accompanied by two supply ships and one tug assist vessel. There are 436 guests and 458 crew still remaining on the ship.

Twenty people sustained injuries on the vessel, which was being tossed about by wind and waves, Viking Ocean Cruises said. All are being treated at medical facilities in Norway, or have already been discharged.

"Throughout all of this, our first priority was for the safety and well-being of our passengers and our crew," Viking Ocean Cruises said in a statement, thanking Norwegian emergency services and local residents for their support.

The next sailing, which was scheduled to embark on March 27, has been canceled.

Evacuated passengers treated for bruising, broken bones, cuts

The Norwegian Red Cross, which was treating passengers from the stricken cruise ship at an evacuation center in Hustadvika, on Norway's western coast, said that they were seeing injuries including bruising, broken bones and cuts.

More than 400 people rescued from stranded cruise ship

From CNN's Zahid Mahmood

Rescuers have evacuated 418 people by helicopter from the Viking Sky cruise ship, a day after the vessel was stranded in rough seas off Norway with 1,300 passengers and crew on board.

“There are at least two or three helicopters still rescuing people from the cruise ship but there is only one helicopter in operation at one given time because of the weather,” a spokesperson from Norwegian rescue services (HRS Southern Norway) told CNN.

“They work in rotations because it is not possible to hoist people from two helicopters working at one time.”

Passengers aboard the stricken ship say the vessel is being tossed about by wind and waves as they continue to await rescue .

Three of the ship's four engines are now working, and tug boats are trying to move the ship to shore.

Americans airlifted from cruise ship describe frightening scenes on board

Two American passengers who were airlifted off the Norway cruise ship told CNN affiliate Dagbladet about the frightening scene on board.

"Furniture would slide across the room, slide back and with it came people and glass. It was a very dangerous situation frankly," Jan Terbruegen said.

Speaking at the Scandic Hotel Alexandra, where many of the evacuated passengers are staying, Terbruegen described seeing the ship drifting toward rocks before being evacuated.

"We could see that we were getting blown in toward some rocks. That was the most frightening thing I think. But luckily that wasn't our destiny," Terbruegen said.

Beth Clark, another American passenger, said she was hoisted 100 feet in the air onto a Coast Guard helicopter from the ship. She praised the Norwegian Coast Guard, Viking Sky crew and others for help with the evacuation efforts.

What went right! The Viking Sky rescue mission through the eyes of the crew

Share it on.

A successful rescue mission in fierce weather that captivated the world on 23 March 2019. This is the story of the Viking Sky: a cruise ship with 1373 people on board which lost power off the coast of Norway. The strong winds and high waves made the rescue operation even more dramatic. A second ship in the vicinity running into trouble, added to the already highly challenging situation.

The world watched with distress the images that emerged from the cruise ship and followed on (social) media the awe-inspiring hoisting operation as it unfolded throughout the afternoon and the entire night. By 10:30 am the next day 479 out of the 1373 passengers were successfully evacuated by helicopter. This makes it the largest passenger ship rescue operation to date. The question for the Viking Sky ship owners will undoubtedly be “What went wrong?”. But the rescue mission is one which deserve the exact opposite “What went right?” Here’s a first-person account from Capt. Jim Nielsen and the crew of Rescue 9 highlighting the importance of the impeccable organisation behind the mission, the competence, skills, the benefit of training and a well-rested crew.

Crew of Rescue 9:

Captain - Jim H Nielsen Copilot - Stian Nagelsen Hoist Operator - Ivar Lobrot Rescue Man - Erlend Birkeland Medic - Alte Skrede

We, the crew on SAR 9, had been onshore and were preparing to fly back offshore to Statfjord B, where CHC provides Search and Rescue service for Equinor (note editor: energy company headquartered in Stavanger, Norway). We were relaxed and had jokingly sent our rescue man and medic out for some food so they could uphold their readiness. The payback was that they came back still eating ice-cream while we packed the rest before flight. We were all in the helicopter, just waiting for our medic, who was looking very intensely at his phone while walking to the helicopter. Minutes later – after our check was complete and we started taxiing – he would tell us about the breaking news: a cruise ship in trouble at Hustadvik. It was all over the news!

We lined up on the runway and took off. When passing 500’, the tower came up on the radio.  “SAR 9 – you are requested to proceed directly to the cruise ship”  – there was a brief moment of silence, then we replied  “Rodger – continuing right turn directly, and canceling IFR”

The tower gave us the latest coordinates and renamed us “Rescue 9” which is the callsign that indicates that we have priority. It was unspoken, but we all knew that this would be a serious matter and we all went from our relaxed mode into what we could call preparing mode. The cabin started to plan how many could be in the seats, on the floor, what they could expect in terms on injuries, number of patients, etcetera. In the cockpit, we started to calculate the time to the cruise ship, expected available people we could take onboard, endurance in the area, refueling areas and so forth. The weather was showery and wind of around 50kts, so we set course VFR along the coast and had about 1 hour and 30 minutes before arriving. We scanned the maritime emergency frequency (CH16) and our airborne frequencies. Due to the terrain we where relatively close before we could hear what was actually going on in the area. When we saw the ship for the first time, I remember the silence in the helicopter. Just like for a split second we had to digest what we actually saw.

When we saw the ship for the first time, I remember the silence in the helicopter.

Rescue 5, the CHC SAR helicopter normally stationed on Heidrun responded, and quickly gave us the layout of the situation: drop off zone for the passengers, refueling spot, and a landing area for waiting. We acknowledged and lined up behind Rescue 8, another CHC SAR helicopter normally stationed at Florø. Recue 40 from the national rescue service had just landed for refueling. At this point we were lined up and could see the movements of Viking Sky and the scope of everything.

We had just had a training flight the day before in 8,5-meter waves and 50kts of wind. Not very different from these conditions. So, the tasks separately weren’t much different than what we trained for. The big challenge was the scale of this: the Viking Sky mission included 59 hoist cycles with older passengers, and the fact that we ended up having 2 ships in distress in the same area.

We quickly briefed each other and got ready for a long night. I was flying pilot on the hoist operations, and the pilot next to me had to keep track of passengers that came onboard, check fuel, and at the same time keep an ear on the radio. He did all that and still had capacity to tell me every time the ship rolled, pitched or fishtailed in advance to give me a heads up before the ship actually moved. I was focused on the hoist operator’s guidance, keeping us safe from the ship, and keeping the people we had in the wire safe at all time. At the same time, I listened to the air to air channel to keep my situational awareness up to date, and CH 16 to stay updated on the ship’s needs. The medic was the organizer in the cabin. He had to carry some of the older passengers back in the cabin, and he started to get tired, so on the last lift we only took 15 passengers before returning to set them off.

Viking sky hoisting

The workload was continuously high, and the circumstances challenging, but we managed the stress and never felt unsafe.

The ship’s movements were also different from a ship in normal forward movement. The waves this close to shore were both coming from the sea and were reflected from shore, and the ships anchors were also out which all contributed to the unfamiliar movements.

Viking Sky Rescue CHC

When we started the first lift, we quickly got into good routine and our teamwork worked perfectly. In just 30 minutes we had 22 persons onboard and returned to the sports hall where local emergency staff had established a reception center. When we landed and I saw all the people that came out of the helicopter and were taken care of, I was really impressed with the level of commitment.

After the first lift, we still had fuel for about 1 hour and 40 minutes and one of the other helicopters needed refueling more urgent than us, so we returned to the established waiting area and landed. ATC had taken over a more active role as “on scene coordinator”. They were able to give an estimate of when we could expect to be ready for the next lift, and they quickly established a circuit for us.

Mayday-mayday-mayday, this is Hagland Captain, we are capsizing

On our way out to the second lift at Viking Sky, we heard a second MayDay call on CH16  “Mayday-mayday-mayday, this is Hagland Captain, we are capsizing”.

In the cockpit we looked at each other with disbelief, and the first comment was a short “really?” … like is this really happening? The active role by ATC was very important in this situation as our situational awareness was split between two very special cases in such a small area with that many assets both in the air and in the water.

We could see the vessel so we rerouted and were hovering next to the second ship within minutes. Hagland Captain wanted to manually lower the anchor to avoid running onshore. They had no power and no lights, so we were on standby next to the ship until we where low on fuel. During this time, we had radio communications with ATC so they could have another helicopter ready when we left Hagland Captain.

A refueling spot had been established at a nearby school ground. This was very efficient and a factor that gave us comfort so we could focus on the hoist operation. The initial uncertainties and challenges became routine surprisingly fast. That was an advantage since it was dark now, and the weather with strong winds and showers of rain and hail made hoisting very challenging. We completed 2 more lifts. Between them we contacted our Operations center on sat phone to get an update on our replacement crew. The team at the operations center had a long night as well, and gave us the support we needed to be able to concentrate on the mission.

school

The relief crew were planned to arrive around midnight in Kristiansund. We made the third lift, refueled and returned to Kristiansund to have the helicopter ready for the next crew. After we landed, we made all the preparations for the next crew, so they could have the best possible transit into the operation.

So, all in all, we did what we do when we train. We just did it a lot more, a lot longer and all at the same time with real people that needed our help. It pays off to “train hard and fight easy”.

Search-and-rescue crew members describe what it was like during the 18-hour mission to rescue 1,300 cruise passengers during a storm

  • On Saturday, the Viking Sky cruise ship made a mayday call off the coast of Norway when it ran into engine trouble during a storm.
  • Patrick Gerritsen, Chief Search and Rescue, and crewman Rune Jansen told INSIDER of their experience during the 18-hour mission.
  • Gerritsen was stationed at mission control on land.
  • Jansen was on the ship's deck, where he helped passengers who were in a range of conditions prepare for rescue.
  • Passenger accounts of the boat on Saturday include 40-foot waves, listing (or the ship tilting), and general chaos.

Insider Today

On Saturday afternoon, the Viking Sky cruise ship had to make a mayday call . The ship's engines were having trouble, a storm was brewing, and the boat, which was carrying 1,300 people, was heading straight for Norway's notoriously rocky coast .

Within 30 minutes of that call, rescuers were on the scene, having flown in by helicopter. This was because of the communication between the Search and Rescue (SAR) and CHC Norway helicopter teams, SAR lead pilot Patrick Gerritsen told INSIDER.

"The conditions were very close to the rocky shore," Gerritsen said. "The situation was very urgent."

Gerritsen said that in total six helicopter crews were deployed for the mission. The first crew was called in around 2:10 p.m. local time, and throughout the night teams worked together to establish a rhythm of continuously ferrying passengers from the boat to safety on land about 15 minutes away, the pilot said.

In total, the rescue operation took about 18 hours.

While Gerritsen was among those working to bring passengers to safety from the operations center, some were stationed on the boat itself to help passengers prepare to be airlifted. One of those people was crewman Rune Jansen.

The crewman said that at first things on the deck were calm and orderly, but everyone reacted differently to the situation as the day turned into night.

"I was helping get the passengers in position for hoisting," Jansen said. "They were afraid. Someone cried. They had little clothes on, some were only wearing underwear. Some were injured and we had to hoist them in stretchers because of broken legs and other things."

Safety and accommodations were integral to the mission. Many of the passengers were elderly, Jansen said. In certain cases, he accompanied guests who needed assistance into the helicopter to ensure total safety.

"It was very important to have a safe operation," he told INSIDER. "We were able to do that with two rescue men on the boat. "

Ultimately, the crew rescued 470 people, including 17 who were wounded . All the while, 30-foot high waves continued to toss the ship and 51 miles per hour wind was a constant threat.

And in the midst of this, the Search and Rescue crew got another call: A c argo ship was in need of help — it had run into engine trouble and was also headed for the rocky coast, Gerritsen said. The rescuers sprung into action to help the nine-person crew on that ship.

Although it's abnormal for two these situations to happen simultaneously, Gerritsen said the SAR crews were prepared. He said the two rescues were "seamless."

"This kind of operation is what we train for year-round. It's what we are used to. We are used to these conditions — or even worse," Gerritsen said "For us, this is what we do and this is what we feel comfortable with. But at the same time we do, of course, understand that for the passenger on the cruise ship who is just on vacation it's a traumatic experience."

UPDATE: March 29, 2019: This post was updated to reflect that the rescue mission took 18 hours, the conditions of the passengers on the ship, and that Patrick Gerritsen was stationed in the operations center.

  • Several people were injured after a 'sudden, extreme gust of wind' caused a cruise ship to tilt on its side
  • A cruise ship lost power and air conditioning while at sea
  • A Carnival cruise ship tilted sideways with passengers onboard: 'It was pure chaos. Screams. Cries. Panic.'

Viking Cruise Ship Stranded Off Norway Reaches Shore After Harrowing Rescue

viking sky cruise ship rescue

By Iliana Magra

  • March 24, 2019

LONDON — A cruise ship that set out with more than 1,300 people but became stranded off Norway’s coast finally reached the shore on Sunday afternoon, after rescuers launched a harrowing operation in rough weather to evacuate hundreds of people one by one by helicopter.

More than 890 people — 436 passengers and 458 crew members — were left on the 47,800-ton ship, the Viking Sky, as it headed to Molde, a coastal town in western Norway. On Sunday about 4:30 p.m. local time, after about six hours of traveling at sea with one tugboat in front and another in the rear, the vessel docked.

In footage shared on Twitter , cheers and whoops could be heard from onshore.

“It has reached Molde; everything has gone according to plan,” Einar Knudsen, a spokesman for the Joint Rescue Coordination Center for Southern Norway, which led the rescue operation, said by phone on Sunday.

Earlier, some passengers, who were airlifted from the ship’s deck, had arrived onshore bruised and battered, the Red Cross said. Passengers told NBC News that many had been hurt by falling objects and shattered glass as waves rocked the ship.

“Nothing similar has happened before, not in this magnitude,” Mr. Knudsen said.

The ship, which left Bergen, Norway, on March 14, had been scheduled to arrive on Tuesday in Tilbury Port on the River Thames in southeastern England. Passengers onboard included people from the United States, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. But when the vessel was traveling between two Norwegian ports, Tromso and Stavanger, it sent a mayday alert on Saturday afternoon that several engines had failed.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the cruise ship to lose power. But it did so along a particularly dangerous part of the Norwegian coastline called Hustadvika, according to Eirik Walle, a coordinator for the southern rescue center.

Five helicopters and several other vessels were involved in the rescue effort. (According to local reports, two helicopters also helped a cargo ship on Saturday, the Hagland Captain, which was in Norwegian waters when it sent an SOS message saying it, too, had “engine problems.” The crew members were evacuated.)

Rough weather — high winds and 26-foot waves — hampered the effort to evacuate the passengers of the Viking Sky, which began around 2 p.m. local time on Saturday. At least three passengers sustained serious injuries.

“Currently, we understand 20 people suffered injuries as a result of this incident,” a spokesman for Viking Cruises, which operates the ship, said by email. He added that they were all receiving medical care in Norway and that some had already been discharged.

The Red Cross said on Sunday that several of the rescued passengers had suffered cuts or broken bones. “Many are also traumatized by what they have experienced, and need to be taken care of when they land,” the statement said.

Video footage shared by the cruise ship passengers on social media showed a terrifying ordeal as the ship swayed and furniture, plants and people were sent sliding across the floor. Other footage depicted hundreds of people strapped in fluorescent life jackets as water rushed past their feet inside the ship.

“The ship is rocking and rolling but at anchor,” Alexus Sheppard, a passenger, told The New York Times on Saturday after having waited to be evacuated for six hours. “Everyone is calm, except when we get rolled by a big wave,” she said.

Others commended the ship’s crew members, who gave water to the passengers and made them sandwiches.

One couple, Allen and Susan Dollberg of Novato, Calif., spoke on Sunday to NRK, the Norwegian government-owned broadcaster, about their experience.

“At first we took it lightly,” Mr. Dollberg said. “We thought we would be able to to make it through that water.” But he added, “Then suddenly the alarms went off that we needed to evacuate ship.”

Ms. Dollberg said, “We looked at each other and said, ‘This is really happening.’ ”

“Everything was breaking, furniture, glassware,” she said. “The closet doors were banging back and forth.” She added, “When we got the signal to evacuate, there was no time to think about getting important things like passports.”

The couple said they still had friends aboard the ship, saying it had been “a rough night for them.” But Ms. Dollberg praised the rescue operation: “The crew, the Norwegian people and the rescue operation have been stellar.”

On Sunday, after the ship was stranded for nearly 24 hours, the operation came under control despite the challenging weather, including strong currents, heavy winds, and high waves.

Mr. Knudsen said of the ship when it was headed to shore, “It’s moving at a speed of 8 knots,” with three of its four engines working.

The cause of the ship’s engine failure was unknown, Torstein Hagen, the Norwegian founder and chairman of Viking Cruises, which has its headquarters in Switzerland, told local news outlets on Sunday.

He also said that the passengers would be compensated. “They will get their money back,” he said, adding, “They will also have a letter from me, and be invited back again.”

Mr. Hagen told the newspaper VG Sunday: “What happened today is among the worst I ever experienced. But as it seems to all end well, I’ve got to say we have been lucky. We keep doing the best we can.”

In a statement on Sunday, Viking Cruises said, “The 479 passengers who were airlifted from the vessel are currently on shore and arrangements have been made to fly them home, with the first passengers leaving today.”

It also said that the company’s next sailing, which had been scheduled to embark on March 27, had been canceled. “Guests and their travel agents have been contacted directly. We do not anticipate any additional cancellations at this time,” the statement said.

The ship will remain at the port in Molde for a public investigation into what happened, Mr. Knudsen, the spokesman for the rescue operation, said.

The cruise ship industry has suffered a number of disasters in the past decade, including the sinking of the Costa Concordia in 2012 and the deadly fire of the Norman Atlantic in 2014, as well as setbacks such as outbreaks of illness and onboard drug raids .

The cruise ship Viking Sky reaches the port of Molde under its own steam on Sunday.

Updated at 2:12 p.m. ET

A luxury cruise ship has safely arrived at port in Norway after a harrowing ordeal that started when the ship's engines failed during a storm off the country's western coast on Saturday.

The Viking Sky, operated by Viking Ocean Cruises, sent out a mayday signal after experiencing engine problems in the Norwegian Sea, according to Reuters . At the time, the ship was carrying nearly 1,400 passengers and crew, many of whom were senior citizens.

The engine trouble occurred in a stretch of waters known for rough, frigid waters called Hustadvika, which as Reuters reported , is known "shallow waters dotted with reefs." To make matters worse, the engine struggle came during a storm with strong winds gusting at a speed of roughly 79 feet per second, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

"It was very nearly a disaster. The ship drifted to within 100 meters of running aground before they were able to restart one of the engines," Hans Vik, who heads the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre for southern Norway, told TV2 .

Dramatic rescues were underway on Saturday as passengers on the ship were airlifted on a wire one-by-one onto helicopters that hovered above while the ship tossed in the waves.

Rescue services evacuated a total of 479 people, Reuters reported , and by the time the ship arrived in the port of Molde on Norway's west coast, about 900 people were still on board. Officials for Viking Ocean Cruises told the Associated Press that 20 people suffered injuries.

Passengers on the ship described a scene of chaos as they waited to reach safety.

In a message to the Associated Press , passenger Alexus Sheppard wrote, "It was frightening at first. And when the general alarm sounded it became VERY real."

Sheppard shared video on social media that showed the ship's floor rolling back and forth on an unsteady plane, followed by the crashing of furniture that clattered across the floor and sometimes slammed into passengers. Panels fell from the ceilings on top of passengers who were trying desperately to avoid harm.

"The last 24 hours have been very, very scary, very frightening," an American passenger, Rodney Horgen, told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK . "The best word I suppose is surreal."

He described his reaction to the Associated Press after a huge wave crashed through glass doors and swept his wife, Judie Lemieux, 30 feet across the floor.

"When the windows and door flew open and the 2 meters of water swept people and tables 20 to 30 feet, that was the breaker. I said to myself, 'This is it.' I grabbed my wife but I couldn't hold on. And she was thrown across the room. And then she got thrown back again by the wave coming back."

Other videos showed passengers strapped into orange safety vests as water rose beneath their feet. The wait to get back safely on land stretched for hours.

The 915 passengers were mainly from the United States and Britain, Reuters reported , though there were also Canadians and Australians on board, among others.

The bad weather subsided on Sunday, allowing the ship to reach safety. Norway news agency NTB reported Sunday afternoon the Viking Sky was traveling under its own power at a speed of 7 knots and not being towed.

There were cheers in the port when the Viking Sky arrived, honking its horn triumphantly.

Viking Cruises chairman Torstein Hagen praised the rescue operation by Norwegian authorities and the actions of the vessel's crew.

He told Norway's VG newspaper that the events surrounding the Viking Sky were "some of the worst I have been involved in, but now it looks like it's going well in the end and that we've been lucky."

Hagen also said that the company will make sure all the passengers get home safely and will be rebooking flights for them.

Incidents like this are fairly rare. A 2017 report from the New Zealand government found that globally, roughly two cruise ships a year run aground and that between 1980 and 2012, about 16 cruise ships sank.

Norway breathed a collective sigh of relief on Monday after the dramatic rescue of a stricken cruise ship off its coast, but questions mounted about why the vessel chose to sail into notoriously perilous waters in a storm.

The Viking Sky , carrying 1373 passengers and crew, sent out a mayday call on Saturday after it lost power in stormy seas, as it was tossed about in 15-metre waves that sent tables and furniture sliding from side to side.

The incident led to a spectacular airlift rescue. Images from the scene spread widely in the media and on social networks over the weekend.

It was one of the biggest rescue operations in modern times, with almost 500 passengers, many of them elderly, flown off the ship through day and night by a relay of helicopters fighting heavy winds.

Remarkably, just 28 people were hospitalised and only one suffered serious injuries.

Now that the ship has safely docked, Norwegian officials have opened an investigation into why a cruise ship decided to set sail along the country’s often wild western coast despite storm warnings, forcing the major evacuation.

The Viking Sky had left the northern city of Tromsoe and was headed for Stavanger in southern Norway when it had engine problems and issued a mayday call on Saturday afternoon.

The ship anchored in heavy seas to avoid being dashed on the rocks in an area known for shipwrecks.

Dag S. Liseth of Norway’s Accident Investigations Board told AFP: “The high risk which the ship, its passengers and crew were exposed to made us decide to investigate the incident.

“The risk to the passengers and the vessel was high. It could have been worse, but thankfully, it all ended well.”

Just 28 people were hospitalised and only one suffered serious injury. Picture: Odd Roar Lange/NTB Scanpix/AFP/Norway Out.

One of the questions investigators will have to look into is why the Viking Sky , which was en route from Tromsoe in the north to Stavanger in the southeast, took the risk of sailing through that tricky stretch of water when a storm had been forecast.

“I don’t want to speculate on that but it’s one of the aspects we’ll look at in our investigation,” Mr Liseth said.

After about half of the ship’s passengers were taken off, the captain made the decision mid-day Sunday to halt the evacuation.

About 900 people were still on board when the ship limped into the port city of Molde on its own engines. Viking Ocean Cruises said on Monday it had begun “an internal investigation … to establish a complete and thorough understanding of what happened,” and welcomed the official investigations which the company would “fully support”.

In the same statement, Viking Ocean Cruises chairman Torstein Hagen also said he “would like to personally apologise for what our guests experienced”.

Mr Liseth said investigators were heading to Molde on Monday but declined to speculate why the Viking Sky captain had decided to sail to Stavanger in the first place despite the weather warning. He couldn’t immediately say how long the cruise ship would remain in Molde.

Yngve Skovly, of the police force in Moere and Romsdal district, where Molde sits, said there was no suspicion of a criminal offence but police had opened an investigation to find out why the ship had engine problems. That probe would be part of the one by the Accident Investigations Board.

The decision by the Finnish captain of the Viking Sky raised several eyebrows in Norway, especially since the famed Coastal Express , a tourism boat that crisscrosses the country’s coast, had chosen not to sail through that stretch and instead flew its passengers by plane.

“We have no particular opinion on the question of whether it was particularly controversial to do that,” Eirik Walle, a Norwegian rescue centre official, told AFP.

“Even if other ships decided to stay docked in port, there was a lot of maritime traffic in the area at the time.”

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has offered to take part in the Norwegian inquiry, since around 600 of the passengers were American.

The Viking Sky, carrying 1373 passengers and crew, sent out a mayday call on Saturday after it lost power in stormy seas.

As passengers began returning home, many of them praised the Viking Sky ’s crew and the rescuers who helped them, and well as those who received them once they reached dry land.

“I’ll tell you, the people have been amazing,” one passenger told the TV2 channel while he waited for his flight home from Molde airport.

“Not only the folks in the helicopters and standing by for those of us who stayed on the boat. But all the people in the dock … It was amazing.”

The Viking Sky is a relatively new ship, delivered in 2017 to operator Viking Ocean Cruises.

The ship was on a 12-day cruise along Norway’s coast before its scheduled arrival on Tuesday in the British port of Tilbury, on the River Thames. The passengers were mostly an English-speaking mix of American, British, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian citizens.

All the cruise ship passengers were expected to be flown out of Norway by Monday evening, police said.

Viking Sky ’s next trip, to Scandinavia and Germany, which was due to leave on Wednesday, has been cancelled but its owner said no other trip cancellations for the ship were foreseen yet.

The Viking Cruises ship that was stranded due to engine trouble arrived at port on Sunday in Molde, Norway, after nearly 24 hours of rescue operations.

Over 890 people, including 436 passengers and 458 crew members, were still on board the ship as it approached the port using its own power, after restarting one of its engines. The ship docked at 4:30 p.m. local time, a spokesperson for Viking Cruises told BuzzFeed News.

The ship approached with one tugboat leading the way and another tugboat following as it headed toward the coastal Norwegian town, the Norwegian Joint Rescue Coordination Centre tweeted.

A total of 1,373 people were aboard the ship when it experienced engine failure and issued a mayday call around 2 p.m. local time Saturday, off the western Hustadvika coast, prompting evacuations by helicopter.

While passengers on the ship waited to be evacuated, rough sea conditions tossed furniture and passengers around the ship, and seawater flooded a muster station.

However, no official statement has been released regarding this matter.

It is important to note that incidents like these can occur on any cruise ship, regardless of the company’s track record. The safety and well-being of the passengers should always be the top priority, and the successful evacuation of all guests from the Viking Sky is a testament to the crew’s professionalism and the effectiveness of the rescue operation.

Number of Injuries

With a reported 20 injuries, the incident aboard the Viking Sky cruise ship served as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise during maritime journeys. The nature and severity of the injuries sustained by the passengers have not been specified by Viking Ocean Cruises. It is unclear whether any crew members were injured during the incident.

As of now, Viking Ocean Cruises has not made any statements regarding potential compensation for the affected guests. It remains to be seen whether the company will offer any form of compensation or assistance to those who were injured or inconvenienced by the incident.

Airlifting to Safety

Using helicopters, all guests on board the Viking Sky were safely airlifted to land during the incident. The evacuation process was carefully executed over several hours to ensure the safety of each individual.

Despite the poor weather conditions, the skilled helicopter crews were able to successfully transport all guests to safety. This method was chosen due to the high winds and rough waves, which made lifeboat rescues too dangerous. The use of helicopters allowed for a quicker and more efficient evacuation, minimizing the risk to the guests and ensuring their timely arrival on land.

This method of rescue showcases the expertise and preparedness of the crew and emergency response teams involved. The successful airlifting of all guests was a crucial step in resolving the situation and ensuring their well-being.

Towing to Shore

Assisted by a towboat, the Viking Sky was brought safely to shore, marking the end of the harrowing incident. The towing process duration, as well as the assessment of ship damage, have not been specified. It is crucial for the ship to undergo a thorough inspection to determine the extent of any potential damage caused by the engine failure and the challenging weather conditions it encountered. A detailed assessment will allow Viking Ocean Cruises to address any necessary repairs and ensure the ship’s seaworthiness for future voyages. The towboat played a vital role in guiding the ship to port, showcasing the importance of teamwork and cooperation during emergency situations. It is commendable that all guests were successfully evacuated and the incident concluded without any fatalities.

Cancelled Voyage

I cancelled one sailing due to the incident. The safety and well-being of our guests are our top priorities, and we made the decision to cancel the Scandinavian sailing scheduled for Wednesday in order to assess and address any potential issues.

Here is an overview of the impact on our guests and future sailings:

Compensation for guests: We understand that the cancellation may have caused inconvenience and disappointment for our guests. We are currently reviewing our policies and will be providing appropriate compensation to those affected.

Impact on future sailings: While this incident has resulted in the cancellation of one voyage, our overall schedule remains unaffected. We are committed to ensuring that our future sailings continue as planned and provide an exceptional experience for our guests.

We appreciate the understanding and patience of our guests during this time. Safety is our utmost priority, and we are taking all necessary measures to address the situation and minimize any impact on our valued guests.

As a luxury cruise line, it is crucial for the company to address the concerns of its customers and provide appropriate compensation, if necessary. Additionally, there is no mention of any previous incidents involving the company. While it is not uncommon for cruise ships to encounter technical difficulties, it is important for Viking Ocean Cruises to maintain a transparent and accountable approach to ensure the trust and satisfaction of its guests.

Further information regarding the engine failure and any previous incidents would help provide a more comprehensive understanding of the situation.

Weather Conditions

During the incident, the poor weather conditions included high winds and rough waves that posed a significant risk to the safety of all guests on board. The Viking Sky cruise ship encountered these challenging weather conditions towards the end of its journey, resulting in the evacuation of all passengers.

The weather was deemed too dangerous for lifeboat rescues, leading to the use of helicopters to airlift the guests to safety. Although the specific weather conditions were not mentioned, it is clear that the severity of the situation necessitated immediate action.

As for the impact on future sailings, Viking Ocean Cruises has not provided any information regarding this matter. Additionally, there has been no mention of potential compensation for the affected guests.

Guest Evacuation

Guests were airlifted to safety by helicopters due to the dangerous weather conditions encountered by the Viking Sky cruise ship. The decision to evacuate all guests was made because the high winds and rough waves made it too risky to conduct rescues in lifeboats.

The evacuation process took several hours and involved the transportation of guests from the ship to land in Norway. Thankfully, there were no fatalities reported, but 20 people did sustain injuries during the incident. It is unclear what the nature and severity of these injuries were.

As for the impact on future sailings, Viking Ocean Cruises has cancelled one sailing, but no information has been provided regarding potential compensation for affected guests. It is also unknown whether this incident will have any further implications for the company’s overall schedule.

Media Coverage

Honestly, I was initially skeptical about the media coverage of the incident. But after hearing about the safe evacuation of all guests and the efforts made to bring the ship to shore, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and admiration for the crew and rescue teams involved.

The media coverage surrounding the evacuation of the Viking Sky cruise ship has undoubtedly had an impact on the company’s reputation. While the incident itself was unfortunate, the fact that all guests were safely evacuated showcases the effectiveness of the crew and rescue operations. This positive outcome can help mitigate any potential negative effects on the company’s reputation.

The media coverage highlights the professionalism and dedication of the crew, which can enhance the public’s perception of Viking Ocean Cruises. It is crucial for the company to continue to address any concerns and provide transparent information to maintain their reputation in the industry.

Conclusion and Impact

After considering the safe evacuation and successful towing of the Viking Sky cruise ship, it is evident that the incident had a significant impact on both the company’s reputation and the perception of the crew’s professionalism.

The incident highlighted the importance of safety precautions and emergency preparedness in the cruise industry. It raised questions about the maintenance and reliability of the ship’s engines, as well as the company’s transparency regarding the cause of the engine failure.

The successful evacuation and rescue operations showcased the effectiveness of emergency protocols and the skill of the rescue teams involved. However, the injuries sustained by some guests during the incident underscored the need for continuous improvement in passenger safety measures.

Moving forward, it is crucial for Viking Ocean Cruises to address any underlying issues that may have contributed to the engine failure, and to implement enhanced safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Moving on from the conclusion and impact of the incident involving the Viking Sky cruise ship, let’s now delve into the safety measures and emergency procedures that were in place during the evacuation and rescue process.

The safety of the guests is always a top priority for cruise ship operators, and in this case, Viking Ocean Cruises demonstrated their commitment to ensuring the well-being of their passengers. When the ship lost power and encountered rough weather conditions, the crew immediately issued a mayday call and initiated emergency protocols.

Airlifting the guests to safety via helicopters was the most effective way to evacuate everyone given the dangerous conditions that made lifeboat rescues impossible. This evacuation process took several hours and involved meticulous coordination between the crew, emergency responders, and the guests themselves.

It is reassuring to know that emergency procedures were successfully implemented, resulting in the safe rescue of all passengers.

As I take my pick from this bread basket extravaganza, I can’t help but think of the breakfast potato variations that would perfectly complement these delights. Whether it’s crispy hash browns, seasoned home fries, or bite-sized potato nuggets, the combination of warm bread and savory potatoes is truly irresistible.

Demystifying Royal Caribbean Gratuities: Your Guide to Costs and Etiquette

An image featuring a close-up of a hand holding a cruise ship model, surrounded by a variety of international currency notes

As a seasoned traveler, I have always wondered about the mysterious world of Royal Caribbean gratuities. How much should I tip? Who exactly should I tip? Well, fret no more, fellow cruisers!

In this guide, I will demystify the intricate web of Royal Caribbean gratuities, providing you with all the necessary information about costs and proper tipping etiquette.

So, grab a cup of coffee and let’s embark on this enlightening journey together!

  • Royal Caribbean charges a daily gratuity to every passenger, regardless of age, which is distributed to passenger-focused crew members.
  • The gratuity rates are $16.00 per person, per day for most guest rooms and $18.50 per person, per day for guests in suites.
  • Guests have the option to prepay gratuities before the cruise to avoid potential rate increases and eliminate extra charges on the ship.
  • While the gratuity amount is typically automatic and not easily changed, reductions may be reasonable for poor service or major issues, which can be discussed at Guest Services.

Understanding the Daily Gratuities Charge

I have learned that the daily gratuity charge on Royal Caribbean cruises is automatically applied to my account and distributed to passenger-focused crew members. This automatic charge is a convenient way to ensure that the hardworking staff who cater to our needs are properly compensated.

The pros of this system include the ease of not having to worry about carrying cash or calculating tips. It also guarantees that all crew members, from dining staff to room stewards, receive their fair share.

However, there are some cons to consider as well. Some passengers may prefer to have more control over their gratuities and choose to tip individually. Additionally, it is important to understand that a portion of the gratuity charge is not distributed to all crew members, but rather to those who directly serve passengers.

Overall, understanding the distribution of gratuities helps us appreciate the hard work of the crew members who make our cruise experience enjoyable.

Who Must Pay Gratuities on Royal Caribbean?

Passengers of all ages are required to pay gratuities on Royal Caribbean cruises. There are no gratuity exemptions or age limits for tipping on Royal Caribbean. Unlike other cruise lines that may have special circumstances for younger passengers, Royal Caribbean applies gratuities to all passengers, regardless of age. This means that even children and infants are required to pay the daily gratuity charge.

It’s important to note that the gratuity amount is the same for all passengers, regardless of their age. So whether you’re a child, a teenager, or an adult, you will be subject to the same gratuity charges. This policy ensures that the hardworking crew members who provide excellent service to all guests are fairly compensated for their efforts.

Breaking Down the Costs: How Much Are Gratuities?

Breaking down the costs, the gratuity amount on Royal Caribbean cruises varies depending on the length of the cruise and the type of guest room. Here is a breakdown of the gratuities on Royal Caribbean:

  • For most guest rooms, the daily gratuity charge is $16.00 per person, per day.
  • Guests staying in suites are charged $18.50 per person, per day.

The rates also vary based on the length of the cruise. For example, a 7-day cruise in a balcony cabin would result in a gratuity charge of $112.00 per person. Couples on a weeklong cruise in a balcony cabin would be charged $224 in gratuities.

It’s important to note that these gratuity charges are separate from the 18% automatic gratuity charged at specialty restaurants, bars, and spas.

These tipping guidelines provide a helpful framework for passengers to plan their budgets and ensure that the hardworking crew members are rewarded for their exceptional service.

Payment Options: How to Pay Gratuities

Paying gratuities on Royal Caribbean cruises can be done through various methods. One option is to prepay before the cruise, which has its advantages. Prepaying allows you to budget your expenses in advance and avoid potential rate increases. You can easily prepay online or by calling Royal Caribbean.

On the other hand, if you choose not to prepay, gratuities will be automatically added to your account at the end of the sailing. This eliminates the need for additional payments on the ship. However, if you prefer alternative payment methods, you can discuss specific gratuity refunds or changes at Guest Services until the morning of departure.

It’s important to note that the 18% automatic gratuity charged at bars and spas cannot be changed.

Can I Change the Amount Paid? Dealing With Service Issues

Dealing with service issues on a Royal Caribbean cruise can be frustrating if the gratuity amount is automatic and not easily changed. However, there are options available to address these concerns.

Here are some steps you can take:

Visit Guest Services: If you’re unhappy with the service, go to Guest Services and explain the situation. They may be able to assist you in reducing the gratuity amount based on the poor service received.

Request a Refund: If the service issues were significant and impacted your overall experience, you can discuss the possibility of receiving a refund for specific gratuities with Guest Services.

Act before departure: Make any changes to gratuity amounts before the morning of departure. After that, the automatic gratuity charges will be final.

Be aware of restaurant and spa gratuities: Keep in mind that the 18% automatic gratuity charged at specialty restaurants, bars, and spas cannot be changed.

Express your concerns: It is important to communicate your dissatisfaction with the service to ensure that your concerns are heard and addressed.

Navigating Gratuities Etiquette on Royal Caribbean

When it comes to navigating gratuities etiquette on Royal Caribbean, there are a few alternatives to consider.

While the daily gratuity charge is automatically added to your account, you can choose to prepay it before your cruise to avoid rate increases and extra charges on the ship. However, if you’re not satisfied with the service, you may be able to make a reduction at Guest Services until the morning of departure.

It’s important to understand the impact of gratuities on the salaries of the hardworking crew members. These gratuities play a significant role in their earnings, as they are distributed among the passenger-focused crew, such as dining staff and room stewards. By tipping, you are directly contributing to their livelihood.

Additionally, it is worth noting that the 18% automatic gratuity charged at specialty restaurants, bars, and spas cannot be changed.

To summarize, tipping alternatives on Royal Caribbean include prepaying gratuities and requesting reductions for poor service. Remember, gratuities have a meaningful impact on the salaries of the dedicated crew members who strive to make your cruise experience enjoyable.

Are Gratuities on Royal Caribbean Mandatory?

Yes, gratuities on Royal Caribbean are mandatory and not included in the overall cruise price. While the amount of gratuity paid can typically be adjusted for poor service or major issues, changes are limited.

Can I Choose Not to Pay Gratuities on Royal Caribbean?

Opting out of paying gratuities on Royal Caribbean can have financial implications. While it may be possible to change the amount paid for poor service, the automatic charges are generally mandatory.

How Are Gratuities Distributed Among the Crew Members?

Gratuities on Royal Caribbean are distributed among crew members based on their roles and responsibilities. The specific allocation process is determined by the cruise line, ensuring that the gratuities are fairly distributed to the passenger-focused crew who provide exceptional service throughout the cruise.

Are There Any Exceptions to the Daily Gratuity Charge?

There are no exceptions or alternatives to the daily gratuity charge on Royal Caribbean cruises. Every passenger, regardless of age or circumstances, is required to pay the automatic gratuity.

Are Gratuities Included in the Price of Specialty Restaurant Meals, Drinks, and Spa Services?

Gratuities are not included in the price of specialty restaurant meals, drinks, and spa services on Royal Caribbean. These services have an automatic 18% gratuity charge, separate from the daily gratuity charge applied to your account.

No-Sail Order Extension: Impact on Cruise Industry

The extended no-sail order caused financial losses and job uncertainties for cruise lines, passengers, and crew members. The impact of the no-sail order on the cruise industry has been significant. Here are some key points:

Financial losses: Cruise lines have faced substantial financial losses due to canceled voyages. With no sailings, they have been unable to generate revenue from ticket sales, onboard purchases, and other sources.

Job uncertainties: Crew members have been greatly affected by the no-sail order. Many have faced job uncertainties as cruise lines have had to reduce staff or put employees on furlough. This has created a challenging situation for those working in the industry.

Industry recovery strategies: In response to the no-sail order, the cruise industry is working on implementing health and safety protocols to ensure a safe return to sailing. Cruise lines are investing in new technologies, enhancing cleaning procedures, and collaborating with health authorities to restore passenger confidence.

Cruise line financial support: To mitigate the financial impact, cruise lines have sought financial support from governments and implemented cost-cutting measures. They have also explored alternative revenue streams, such as offering virtual experiences and land-based activities.

Overall, the no-sail order has presented significant challenges for the cruise industry, but efforts are underway to recover and adapt to the new normal.

Barcelona Port: A Hub for Cruise Ships

Barcelona’s vibrant culture and attractions make it a sought-after destination for cruise passengers. The city’s port facilities are well-equipped to handle large cruise ships, contributing to the local economy through cruise tourism. Barcelona is a popular port for many cruise lines, and it is often included in their itineraries. As a frequent visitor to the port, I have observed the efficient operations and excellent services provided to cruise ships and their passengers. The Barcelona port offers a range of facilities, including docking areas, passenger terminals, and customs and immigration facilities. Cruise ship regulations in Barcelona ensure the safety and security of both passengers and crew members. The port authorities prioritize the implementation of health and safety protocols to create a safe environment for all who visit. Overall, Barcelona’s port plays a crucial role in the success of the city’s thriving cruise tourism industry.

Costa Toscana Christening Ceremony: A Celebration in Barcelona

Attending the Costa Toscana christening ceremony in Barcelona was a memorable experience. Witnessing the celebration of Costa Toscana’s inaugural voyage was a testament to the resilience of the cruise industry. However, it is important to acknowledge the impact of the no-sail order on crew members. The extended no-sail order has created job uncertainties for these hardworking individuals. With canceled voyages and rescheduled trips, crew members have faced financial challenges and an uncertain future. As the industry works on implementing health and safety protocols, it is crucial to prioritize the well-being and stability of the crew members. Their dedication and commitment are essential for the success and recovery of the cruise industry. The Costa Toscana christening ceremony served as a reminder of the industry’s determination to overcome obstacles and provide memorable experiences for passengers and crew members alike.

Financial Losses: The Toll of the No-Sail Order

Experiencing the extended no-sail order firsthand, I witnessed the devastating financial losses incurred by cruise lines due to canceled voyages. The impact on the crew has been significant, with many facing job uncertainties and financial struggles. Cruise lines rely heavily on passenger bookings to generate revenue, and with trips being rescheduled or canceled, their financial situation has been severely affected. The industry is working diligently to implement health and safety protocols to ensure a safe return to sailing. However, the road to recovery will be challenging as cruise lines navigate through these unprecedented times. It is crucial for the industry to find innovative ways to attract passengers back and regain their trust. As the no-sail order continues to be extended, cruise lines must adapt and find ways to overcome the financial hurdles they face.

Passenger Troubles: Rescheduling and Cancellations

Dealing with the extended no-sail order, I had to adjust my travel plans and navigate through the challenges of rescheduling and cancellations. It was a frustrating experience as I had been eagerly looking forward to my cruise vacation. I had to contact the cruise line to discuss my options and explore the possibility of rescheduling or canceling my trip. I also had to consider passenger compensation and whether my travel insurance would cover any losses. Unfortunately, the situation was unpredictable and uncertain. I had to weigh the financial implications and make a decision accordingly. It was a reminder of the importance of having travel insurance and being prepared for unexpected circumstances. Overall, it was a disappointing turn of events, but I remained hopeful that I would be able to enjoy my cruise in the future.

Job Uncertainties: Crew Members in the Cruise Industry

Navigating through the uncertainties of the extended no-sail order, crew members like myself faced job insecurities and the need to consider alternative employment options. The prolonged pause in cruise operations due to the pandemic has had a significant impact on our well-being. With no clear timeline for when we can return to work, the mental health support for crew members has become crucial. Cruise lines have recognized this and have been implementing various initiatives to address our needs. These include providing access to counseling services, organizing virtual support groups, and offering online resources for mental health and well-being. It is encouraging to see the industry acknowledging the challenges we face and taking steps to prioritize our mental health. As we continue to navigate through this uncertain period, it is essential that crew members receive the necessary support to ensure our well-being.

Implementing Health and Safety Protocols: Industry Efforts

Since the extended pause in operations, the cruise industry has been actively working on implementing health and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of everyone involved. These efforts include:

  • Enhanced cleaning and disinfection procedures throughout the ships.
  • Mandatory pre-boarding health screenings for passengers and crew.
  • Social distancing measures in public areas, including reduced capacity.
  • Improved ventilation systems to enhance air quality onboard.
  • Regular testing and monitoring of both passengers and crew for early detection of any potential health issues.

These health protocols and safety measures are crucial in restoring confidence in the cruise industry and providing a safe environment for travelers. By prioritizing the well-being of everyone onboard, cruise lines are taking proactive steps to mitigate the risks associated with the current global health situation. The implementation of these protocols demonstrates the industry’s commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable cruise experience for all.

Barcelona’s Attractions: A Delight for Cruise Passengers

Exploring Barcelona’s attractions during a cruise is an absolute delight for passengers. Barcelona is a city known for its rich culinary delights and architectural wonders. The city offers a wide range of gastronomic experiences, from traditional tapas to Michelin-starred restaurants. Cruise passengers can indulge in delicious paella, fresh seafood, and mouthwatering Catalan cuisine. Barcelona’s architectural wonders are also a sight to behold. Viking Sky Cruise Ship Reaches Nearest Port – All Safe

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: September 8, 2022

Luxury cruise ship Viking Sky slowly limped into the port of Molde on Sunday, the closest port on the west coast of Norway. It was a harrowing and terrifying day and night for all aboard when the cruise ship’s engines failed during a storm in the often-turbulent Norwegian Sea.

Viking Sky arrives at the Norwegian port of Molde

When none of the engines could restart, Viking Cruises’ Viking Sky sent out a Mayday distress call. As wind gusts reached up to 79 mph and seas reached nearly 25 feet, passengers and crew prepared to abandon ship.

The nearly 1,400 passengers and crew donned their neon orange life jackets and reported to their assigned muster stations. While those onboard waited for their next instructions, two Norwegian rescue boats had to return to port due to the high seas. Then, two of the five rescue helicopters were temporarily diverted to airlift crew from a nearby listing cargo ship.

Operating in treacherous winds, the rescue helicopters managed to safely airlift 479 passengers to shore. Close to 900 more passengers and crew remained onboard. Around noon on Sunday, the captain ordered the air evacuation to cease. With one engine restarted, the ship slowly limped into the Norwegian port of Molde late Sunday afternoon. Norwegian tugboats flanked the ship as it made the one-mile journey into port.

What happened to Viking Sky

The terrifying event unfolded on Saturday afternoon off the western coast of Norway. The cruise ship was on a southbound voyage from Tromsø, Norway to Tilbury, England when it found itself in the middle of a ferocious storm in the Norwegian Sea.

Viking Sky cruise south and followed the Norwegian coastline. Eventually the ship had to travel through the unsheltered waters of Hustadvika, a rugged 12-mile stretch dotted with shallows and jagged reefs.

Dangerous to navigate in rough seas and high winds, passenger and cargo ships usually try to skirt further out from Hustadvika during weather events. With winter barely over and unpredictable early spring weather, this intense storm, though predicted, wasn’t unusual for Hustadvika.

Viking Sky Rescue at Sea

What the Danish news reported

The report from Norway stated that Viking Sky lost power due to rough weather and gale-force winds. A friend of mine living in Copenhagen said the Danish news reported that the cruise ship lost power when trying to go full speed ahead and outrun the storm. The news went on to say that the ship’s engines couldn’t handle the extreme power needed to battle the elements to avoid the storm. That is the reason they’re saying the engines failed. The investigation continues.

Norwegian officials who are heading to the port of Molde to investigate what caused the harrowing and potentially deadly incident. Viking Sky was on a 12-day cruise, heading south along the coast to the Norwegian port of Stavanger.

Viking Sky on Social Media

California resident and author, Alexus Sheppard, shared several videos and photos on Twitter and kept the world apprised on the terrifying situation aboard ship.

All 915 passengers, mostly senior citizens from American, Canada, Australia and Britain, and crew members are safely accounted. Several passengers remain in hospital, two with broken shoulders.

Besides fear, another sentiment expressed by everyone interviewed was their admiration for how well the crew handled the situation. Lavish praise was heaped upon the actions and demeanor of the entire staff. That’s always good to hear, especially when things get rough out at sea, and it does.

Migrant-rescue ship Ocean Viking impounded in Brindisi

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 9 - The Ocean Viking, a migrant-rescue ship operated by the NGO Sos Mediterranée, has been impounded in the southern port of Brindisi, the port authority told ANSA on Friday. The authority said the ship, which docked in the port early on Friday with 261 migrants on board, had been impounded for 20 days for an alleged breach of the 'Piantedosi Decree' and a fine would be issued too. Passed at the start of 2023 and named after Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, the decree restricts the activities of NGO-run ships. Under the legislation, the ships must immediately request the authorities assign them a port of safety after making a rescue and head to it, rather than staying at sea to help other people. Piantedosi has said the NGO ships act as a "pull" factor and encourage migrant-boat crossings. (ANSA).
