Grab your costumes, musical instruments, books or anything else you could need for a fun themed cruise.

Imagine boarding a cruise ship to find hundreds – or even thousands – of your shipmates share the very same passions and interests that you do. You're thinking of a themed cruise.

Like a traditional cruise, a themed cruise delivers everything you'd expect of a shipboard vacation, like sundrenched ports, sparkling blue waters and superb dining amid lush surroundings, but instead of a daily program filled with trivia, bingo, dance lessons and pickleball tournaments, you'll find myriad activities geared specifically to the sailing's theme – and plenty of like-minded people to share them with.

Below, you'll find some of the top themed cruises for 2024 and 2025. Be sure to book soon, as these voyages can sell out quickly.

Book a cruise on  GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

From country music to crafting: The best themed cruises for 2024

Centric Presents Soul Train Cruise

You come to hear the music, to pursue a hobby or to follow a celebrity. You return for the community of people sharing a common passion. Themed cruises offer the unique opportunity to find your people and explore the world with them — all while enjoying an incredible schedule of onboard activities and entertainment.

A themed cruise is a special-interest sailing based around interests and hobbies such as food and wine, sports, dancing, crafting, popular films and TV shows, lifestyles and music.

Sometimes, the themed event takes over the entire ship. Other times, the theme cruise organizer has its group join a regular itinerary but offers special events exclusive to participants.

First-time theme cruisers are lured by the chance to meet or listen to their favorite celebrities or to improve their skills in a favorite pastime. However, they often discover that the best part of a themed cruise is immersion in a community of like-minded individuals.

Themed cruises foster a warm, friendly atmosphere onboard where the conversation is easy because you begin with an established connection. Days and nights of shared interests and experiences on board can lead to meaningful connections that can last a lifetime.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What's better than being surrounded by your people, partying the night away and then retiring to your own private cabin that's just an elevator ride away? Not much — except perhaps encountering your celebrity crush at the ship's buffet, attending a no-holds-barred Q&A with your favorite actors or musicians, or taking a small-group class with a rising star.

From a country music cruise to a crafting masterclass, these are some of the best themed cruises coming up in the next year.

Note: As standard on all big-ship cruises, fares for themed cruises include several complimentary dining options. Alcohol and soda will cost extra, with package deals available depending on the cruise line and the charter company. Tours and excursions in port cost extra as well. Pricing is based on two people sharing a cabin.

Best themed cruises for 2022 and 2023

From perfecting a pastime to pursuing a niche passion with fellow fans, themed cruises can be fun, educational or just plain quirky. Here Karl Cushing casts an eye over the best themed cruises for 2022 to 2023.

Christmas is coming early for those lamenting the loss of Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) with April seeing Ambassador Cruise Line commence a similarly theme-packed programme of UK-centric sailings aboard first ship Ambience. Targeting the 50+ market, its themed cruises out of London Tilbury channel everything from Bridge to British Broadcasting Legends. Expect pomp and pageantry aplenty on its 12-night Round Britain voyage celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee (from £1,219pp, departing May 26).

Food and wine

Gastronomic cruises keep getting tastier thanks to facilities such as the Culinary Arts Kitchens aboard Regent Seven Seas Explorer and Splendor . Or take Oceania Cruises whose Culinary Discovery Tours fuse chef-led demos and classes in the Culinary Centers aboard Riviera and Marina with innovative food-themed shore excursions. MSC Cruises remains the TV tie-in titan with its MasterChef At Sea Experience and MasterChef Juniors at Sea programme.

Following its partnership with the U.S. based James Beard Foundation, Windstar Cruises , meanwhile, is to offer three chef-led, food-themed cruises a year from 2022 to 2025.

Interesting new foodie excursions include Quark Expeditions’ Tundra to Table, an Inuit Culinary Experience. Available on select Arctic 2022 and 2023 voyages it’s hosted by Inuit chefs, with a further chef-led wild foraging excursion planned. Other highlights at sea include Silversea’s new culinary programme SALT which, having debuted on Silver Moon , will feature on 2023 launch Silver Nova .

Unsurprisingly, wine is a common focus on European river cruises. Emerald Cruises ’ new eight-day Wines of the Moselle Cruise, sailing from Frankfurt to Bernkastel aboard Star-Ship, is typical, featuring onboard wine presentations and tasting tours at estates such as Schloss Vollrads (from £2,595pp, departing August 21, 2022; emeraldcruises.co.uk). Passengers on Scenic Luxury Cruises’ 11-day Flavours of Bordeaux also get to quaff Cognac at Rémy Martin’s estate (from £3,195pp, departing May 25, 2022).

Art and culture

A French Art and History Cruise along the Rhone, from Lyon to Martigues, features among CroisiEurope’s cultural capers while recently renovated VIVA Tiara has 13 departures of its four-night, round-trip Arts, Culture and Culinary Delights itinerary out of Düsseldorf, Germany (January to March; from €350pp). Budding supersleuths, however, should investigate sister ship MS Swiss Ruby whose seven-night Crime Cruises to Berlin and Düsseldorf star guest authors (from €995pp; viva-cruises.com/en).

Some itineraries include tickets to coveted performances. European Waterways’ summertime Opera Cruises in Northern Italy aboard La Bella Vita, for example, feature performances at Arena di Verona amphitheatre.

Plus, Strictly Come Dancing fans will go ‘cha cha’ for Emerald Cruises’ 2022 programme of cruises featuring stars from the TV show, including Strictly Dancing with Anton and Erin (from £2,145pp, departing Budapest on April 14). Or for a cultural cruise with a side order of wellness the line’s eight-day Rhine Spa, Arts & Culture Cruise from Mainz to Basel includes a day enjoying Caracalla Spa’s thermal springs (from £2,495pp, departing June 26, 2022).

Star Clippers is a good bet for yoga-themed cruises, including a springtime trio of Caribbean yoga-themed sailings aboard Star Flyer (departing March 5, 12 and 19, 2022).

Lines upping their game include Silversea Cruises. Having debuted on Silver Dawn its new wellness program, Otium, is set to star on 2023 launch Silver Nova .

Notable river cruise picks include VIVA Moments. Its two four-night itineraries out of Düsseldorf, Germany – Wellness Trip Middle Rhine and Wellness Trip Rhein-Main – each enjoy nine scheduled 2022 departures (from €395pp).

Cycling and river cruises make natural bedfellows. Scenic’s onboard fleet of e-bikes, for example, enable clients to pedal power their way to sites such as Château de Benauge on its 11-day Beautiful Bordeaux itinerary. The likes of CroisiEurope’s Hiking Cruises, meanwhile, take an altogether more pedestrian approach.

Amadeus River Cruises’ expert-led Golf Programme breaks on the Rhine, Danube and Seine also feature tee-time at famous courses, with Vienna’s Fontana Golf Club a highlight of its seven-night Golf on The Danube aboard MS Amadeus Silver III (from £2,368pp, departing Budapest on September 30, 2022; amadeus-rivercruises.co.uk).

Plus, everyone from Windstar to Star Clippers offers itineraries featuring Monte Carlo overnights for the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix. Top picks include Star Clippers’ seven-night Grand Prix Finals cruise, departing Cannes, France on May 27, 2023 (from £1,870pp).

Monaco Grand Prix

Astronomy and photography

Wildlife or landscape photographers will certainly benefit from spending time with the onboard pro photographers typically featured by expedition cruise such as Aurora Expeditions. Standout sailings include Quark Expeditions’ 14-day Spitsbergen Photography: In Search of Polar Bears aboard Ultramarine (from £7,830pp, departing Helsinki, Finland on May 18, 2023).

interesting themed cruises

Lovers of heavenly bodies will particularly appreciate the planetariums on Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and Viking Orion. For a particularly illuminating time opt for a cruise showcasing the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, such as Hurtigruten’s itineraries along the Norwegian coastline, backed by its generous Northern Lights Promise.

Themed Cruises - CruiseMapper

"Theme Cruises"

Read below about the cruise ship onboard programming, lines, vessels, and many FAQs (Oh yes, I know, it sounds somehow confusing when spelled out.

What is "Theme Cruise"?

Theme cruises take lots of forms, but they primarily are regular voyages with additional onboard programming. This special type of programming can range from seminars to learning and classroom-style sessions, from concerts to dance themes. Countless possibilities are waiting for you to explore- food and wine, religious, music and dancing, cruises for singles, an alternative lifestyle themed, etc. Usually, the programming occurs onboard the cruise ship, but sometimes theme events take place in the port as well. You can search the huge content of Wikipedia's THEME directory (wikipedia.org/wiki/Theme) for arts, music, narrative, etc).

A few words about our "Theme Cruises" photo of choice here. It's a colorful lady - all the way. Colorful just like the selection of unique choices you have from our long list of most special voyages. And what is a specially themed vacation without women, anyway? The God's most charmingly beautiful creatures make the money-world go round! And they drive the cruise travel industry as well. So what a better theme in life - and on your special cruise vacation, than the woman by your side?

Theme Cruise Lines

The purest form of a theme cruise is what the company/brand creates onboard one of its vessels - all the passengers are entitled to be participants then. This was fairly common when shipboard transportation involved long sea stretches for ocean crossings.

Nowadays, with 2000+ passengers onboard most liners, it is not practical for the entire vessel to be turned into a "themed voyage". Still, most large companies schedule annual festivities themed on sports (including car racing, golfing tournaments), music styles, lifestyles, hobbies, etc.

Most affordable and the least crowded are theme voyages on riverboats. Among the best brands in the USA (with large fleets and bigger boats) are ACL-American Cruise Lines and AQV-American Queen Voyages . In Europe, you can search the schedules of brands like Viking , Uniworld , AmaWaterways , Avalon , Scenic , Emerald .

Types of Themed Cruises

The theme cruise vacation travel today is a very popular way to connect people with common hobbies and interests to share the experiences of theme-related onboard activities that are impossible to live through onshore. Theme specials can range from political- to poker- or music-themed. The popularity of these vacations nowadays has spread across the entire demographic spectrum and everyone is able to find out his own line or itinerary.

Special Interests / Private Themed Voyages

These trips are the most common of all themed specials. In these, a special group of interest arranges and purchases a number of staterooms that are in different categories. This special group also sets up the itinerary and makes arrangements for special guests; markets the voyage to travelers who would be interested in the activity. These groups have little impact on other passengers on board, though some public spaces might be taken over by them.

Private theme cruise specials are developed usually by an organization. They are administered by a travel agency - if you want to participate in the events, you should book through this agency. General passengers on board will be prohibited from participating in the events. Some private theme voyages might comprise as many as twenty guests, while others- as many as one thousand. Keep in mind that a great number of private sailings include additional fees, such as fuel surcharges, gratuities, port fees, government taxes, as part of the overall fares. This is important to note while comparing theme sailings prices to the retail prices out in the marketplace.

Theme Charter Voyages

This signifies full ship charter deals: This type of cruise includes the entire ship's organization around interest-du-jour. Every one of the passengers is a participant to some extent. You can enjoy onboard events and additional activities on selected classic cruises that are going to be shaped around particular themes. If you want to learn about local history; or you are a music fan; or just want to improve your photography skills, themes add different dimensions to general offers. The best part is that they all are completely free of charge!

Actually, these are also a kind of "private cruises", but the difference is that everyone on the ship is in the action. Chartered cruises are usually implemented for religious themes, music, gaming tournaments (often poker-themed), alternative lifestyles. Keep in mind that passenger ships are of a wide range of sizes, and it is possible for a chartered ship to only accommodate two hundred guests, while another accommodates as many as 3,000.

Cruise Line Themed Voyages

Major cruise lines offer their own kind of theme voyages to attract passengers. One of the main advantages of these themed voyages is that there is no additional cost for participating. Book through any travel agency or through the line's website - it doesn't really matter (except for the rates, of course). A negative side is that everyone on the ship is welcome to participate which makes the voyage less intimate. Such themed voyages are more speaker-, seminar- or musically oriented.

Companies get more and more innovative - even a tattoo-themed "Ink or Swim" was on offer in April 2015 (roundtrip Fort Lauderdale to Cozumel, Mexico) on Liberty of the Seas . Passengers had the opportunity to get tattoos from renown artists, to attend tattoo contests and join a private beach party in Cozumel. Rates started at $970 pp, including all activities and events, with added $100 pp onboard credit towards tattoos for first and second passengers in each cabin.

Theme Cruises for Adults, Families with Kids, Seniors (FAQs, tips)

Each theme voyage has different dynamics. Groups vary between 10 and 2-3 thousand (on voyage charters). Partial charters book a substantial number of staterooms, full charters book the entire vessel. Nearly everything on board goes around the voyage's theme, and the experience is about connecting these like-minded passengers socially in big-group activities.

Family Cruises - CruiseMapper

Cruises for FAMILIES with KIDS

Family cruises are actually "kids-themed" voyages on ships with plenty of modern and "cool" kids-friendly facilities, dedicated (professionally trained) staff for supervising children's activities, onboard nursery (for toddlers up to 3 yo), kids- and teen-only club lounges, sundecks (with pool or whirlpool), teens-only programs and excursions, teen spa treatments. family-type cabins, family pool deck, kids menus in dining rooms, etc.

Family cruises are the industry's fastest-growing branch of specially themed ship travel vacations. Annually, over 2 million children cruise worldwide. More and more families book shipping vacations due to their most affordable prices and excellent value as a vacation experience.

  • Ticket price includes accommodations, transportation, dining, entertainment, most activities (including kids clubs and programming), water parks with slides, sports facilities, cinemas.
  • Often, major companies offer "kids sail free" deals or give discount rates for a third/fourth passenger in the cabin.
  • Specifically for families with children are available connecting cabins, bigger than average family-category staterooms (oceanview, balcony) and larger "family suites".
  • Ships provide a safe and controlled kids-friendly environment. Some provide 2-way beepers or walkie-talkies. Families eat together in the main dining rooms. Alternatively, kids can eat at their lounges. Food is complimentary and all you can eat.
  • Themed onboard activities are organized n adult-free facilities for Toddlers (ages 2-4), Juniors (ages 5-7), Intermediate (ages 8-10), Tweens (ages 10-12) and Teens (ages 13-17). Kids in different groups eat at different times and order from special menus.
  • Few ships have trained staff and nursery to look after toddlers or to provide babysitting for families.
  • Caribbean and Mediterranean itineraries are best for family-themed voyages. Mediterranean roundtrips from UK (Southampton) are among the most popular and generally offered by P&O UK.
  • Best brands for family ship travel are Royal Caribbean (largest liners, innovative facilities), Carnival ("Fun Ship" activities, great food, cheapest fares), MSC ("kids sail for free" deals year-round) and Disney (themed entertainment, great facilities, most expensive). Aggressively competing on the family cruising market, some companies establish exclusive partnerships with brands like LEGO (MSC), Dr Seuss (Carnival), DreamWorks (Royal Caribbean), Marvel's superheroes (Disney), Nickelodeon (NCL).
  • The answer to "what are the best ships for families" depends on the vacation budget. It's one of those money questions for choosing between all-inclusive luxury on exotic destinations and affordable packages on shorter itineraries.
  • Bigger and new ships provide more space and activities in comparison even to land-based resorts. Among the most unique facilities are outdoor theaters, zip-lines, multi-deck waterslides, surf simulators, fly simulators, rock-climbing walls, ice-skating rinks, trampolines, circus schools, bumping cars, racing tracks, bowling alleys, mini-golf, arcades.
  • What are the benefits of family cruising? Family ship vacations are convenient (no cooking, cleaning, rentals, changing hotels-restaurants, 24-hour room service, casino gaming and duty-free shopping, numerous close to home departures / saving airfare), all-inclusive (accommodation, meals, alternative menus, entertainment, activities, pools-Jacuzzis, theaters, libraries), care-free (supervised programs, age-based activities shipboard and ashore), adventurous and cheaper than most beach resorts.

KIDS-FREE cruises for ADULTS (tips)

Although most vessels have dedicated to children onboard facilities (clubs, playrooms, pools, supervised activities) kids usually run free, hang out in stairwells, ride the elevators and generally annoy elder passengers. Many companies offer entirely "kids-free" cruises or voyages with a smaller number of children - mainly by picking itineraries and ships less attractive for families.

  • Luxury ships are smaller and geared to adults, but also expensive. Some premium brands provide kids programs and babysitting.
  • Avoid peak-season travel.
  • Book balcony suite to reduce time in public spaces.
  • Brands like NCL Norwegian, Cunard and MSC have top-deck located luxury cabin complexes to maximize privacy. This "ship-within-ship" concept features suite and villa residents with exclusive access to a private sundeck with swimming pool, restaurant, nightclub, fitness and lounge facilities, butler service.
  • Spa suites are another "fewer kids" option also offering as perks premium brand spa products, unlimited access to VIP spa facilities, healthy-food restaurants, even cabins and suites with whirlpool baths, complimentary treatments, fitness classes, thalassotherapy pool.
  • Small-ship cruises fit into smaller, less-known ports and deliver crowd-free days ashore. Hurtigruten ships are shore-hugging and visit 34 ports on coastal routes over six or seven days. They give an opportunity to start exploring non-touristy call ports.
  • Small-ship cruises on smaller boats, as well as river cruises, are also not so kids-friendly due to lack of "modern fun" facilities, less traditional and longer itineraries, smaller cabins, not cheap fares.
  • World Cruises and Grand Voyages (longer than 2-weeks itineraries) attract repeat (older) travelers and fewer families. Repositioning voyages (RepositionCruises.com) are seasonal, always one-way and often change regions, which results in the cheapest fares and kids-free experience. Less traveled routes and exotic destinations (Indian Ocean, Africa, Far East, Arctic and Antarctica, South America) attract fewer families.

Adults-only cruise ships

There are passenger ships advertised in the companies' brochures as "adults-only" and not allowing any kids at all.

  • Most river travel brands have minimum age requirement 12-13 yo and discourage 8- yo kids. Deals are inclusive of drinks (beer-wine-soda at dinners); tours, Wi-Fi, bicycles (ashore), some include also airport transfers, alcoholic beverages, gratuities, in-cabin minibar.
  • Saga targets exclusively passengers over 50 yo, with deals inclusive of all meals (any restaurant dining), gratuities, Wi-Fi, drinks (wine with lunches and dinners), bus transfers.
  • Viking Ocean has a minimum age requirement 18 yo. Deals are inclusive of 1 excursion in each call port, shipwide dining, Wi-Fi, self-serve laundry; drinks (wine-beers-soda during lunches and dinners, all-balcony cabins.

Senior Cruises

It's not too late for a first cruise after 55. Reaching a certain age doesn't mean you won't be able to enjoy a cruise vacation. More and more ships cater to senior travelers. The children-free peaceful atmosphere and calm travelers of similar interests and ages might be the right choice for you. There are few senior cruises each year. Many lines advertise these types of voyages but don't specialize in providing an all-senior model, and generally, seniors find themselves onboard among a younger crowd. Most senior passengers prefer senior river- and smal-ship cruises as compared to huge 2000+ passenger liners. The reason is that these offer a more intimate and quieter atmosphere.

Most senior cruises feature onboard lecturers to peak the interest. A loud party atmosphere is not common. Seniors prefer to relax and learn while traveling. Many lines advertise senior cruises on older ships which means fewer passengers and environment free of partying all night. Voyages for seniors are cost-effective because lines charge less. A growing trend with these types of cruises is senior adults taking along adult children - family reunion style for senior cruises. Children who are middle-aged are less likely to act like kids and prefer relaxing while they travel with senior adult parents.

Theme Cruises 2022 schedule

In the following table are listed all themed voyages (full-vessel charter) scheduled by major cruise line companies. Ship links redirect to CruiseMapper's ship wiki page.

Note: As full-boat (voyage) charters, these are charter party deals - between the shipowner and the charterer (tour company). This means you can't book independently, but only through the ship-chartering company.

21 Themed Cruises that are Interesting, Exciting or just plain Weird

Screen Shot 2014-01-22 at 11.15.19 PM

It used to be that except for the occasional singles cruise most big cruise ships had a pretty similar experience. But not everyone can be fulfilled by ship activities like shuffleboard, napkin folding, and Las Vegas-style reviews. Never fear, there are a great variety of cruises built around different interests. Perhaps one of these would be of interest to you. These cruises range from cruise ships to sailing ships and barges.

Top Themed Cruises for 2024

When like-minded folks take over a cruise ship for an unforgettable gathering at sea, you get these top themed cruises for 2024.

Top Themed Cruises for 2024

Share this post:

Even if you’ve never considered a cruise before , it might be hard to resist the idea of being in a confined space with your favorite celebrity, band or author. That is exactly the idea behind a themed cruise. Like-minded folks take over a cruise ship for an unforgettable gathering at sea.

What is a themed cruise?

From knitting to New Age music, there is a themed cruise for just about every hobby or interest. A themed cruise is a designated sailing (typically just one departure per year) that offers special programming onboard centered around a theme like jazz or the show “Impractical Jokers.”

Some themed cruises are one-off events chartered by an individual or private organization. Others are meticulously curated festivals at sea that are held annually by companies that specialize in hosting themed voyages.

Top Themed Cruises for 2024

The idea is to not only enjoy the amenities of a cruise vacation but spend a few days learning from experts in their field or attend performances and Q&As with your idols. Themed cruises give passengers the unique chance to immerse themselves onboard with fellow fans while also sailing into ports.

Perks range from special commemorative photos or items; the chance to attend a meet-and-greet; and other special parties and events that are part of the price of your cruise.

Call to Book Your Next Cruise Now: 1-855-228-5584!

Which cruise lines host themed cruises?

Any ship or cruise line could host a themed cruise. But there are certain lines that seem to offer more than others. Norwegian Cruise Line has a long-running partnership with Sixthman . This company has made a name for itself hosting festivals at sea, with more than 180 under its belt in the last 20-plus years.

Cunard Line is another cruise line that hosts themed cruises (known as “event voyages”) all year long. But these have an emphasis on arts and culture. Board these British ocean liners for a week of big band music, London theater, the symphony orchestra, or discussions with war veterans on their insightful Greatest Generation sailings, typically held around Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

River cruise lines have long hosted themed cruises, with seasonal Christmas markets departures. But more recently, river cruise lines are making the most of their destination access and intimate setting to host other theme cruises. These can range from wine to Black history.

Explore the website of your favorite cruise line for any special events in the coming year. Or you might see a themed cruise independently advertised by a band or artist you follow on social media.

Christmas on a Cruise

How do you book a themed cruise?

Themed cruises are bookable through a travel agent, the cruise line’s website, or the third-party host, whether that is Sixthman or a smaller organizer. Many in-demand themed cruises (typically annual festivals and big-name acts) sell out far in advance. So, it’s beneficial to be on a mailing list to book as soon as the sailing is available. Repeat passengers on the same themed cruise typically have first dibs with the ability to join a pre-sale.

Keep in mind that because of all the special perks and behind-the-scenes access offered on these sailings, themed cruises typically cost more than your average cruise vacation.

Guests will board Norwegian Pearl this March for a week of superior performances as well as the opportunity to jam with fellow cruisers or attend an open mic. Hosted by Sixthman, this themed cruise celebrates singer-songwriters across genres. It departs from Miami with calls in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Oranjestad, Aruba.

With a focus on the “listening experience,” this cruise puts performance at the heart of its activities. Artists sailing aboard Cayamo in 2024 include Lucius, KT Tunstall, Lyle Lovett, War & Treaty and a whopping 35 other acts.

The 2024 Cayamo Cruise is currently sold out.

Jewish Heritage Cruises (Various Dates)

Cruises are an ideal vacation for guests to enjoy some carefree days jamming out or digging into guest speakers. But travel can also be transformative, and this is the idea behind sailings that explore culture, religion and personal ancestry. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises hosts a variety of European sailings that are centered around the exploration of Jewish heritage .

In 2024, Uniworld offers select dates of sailings like the 11-day “Remarkable Rhine and Historic Holland” or “Delightful Danube” that include the Jewish Heritage Program. Why Theme Cruise

A themed cruise is a fantastic way to vacation, with the added bonus of activities and entertainment suited to your interests. A themed cruise gives you more of what you love, whether that be heavy metal music or knitting. You also get the opportunity to meet people who share the same passion and interests. Maybe it's history, architecture, or a love of cats - there is a cruise for you out there.  While onboard, there are events already planned, which means less work for you. There are celebrities, bands, and numerous curated events, to make the most of the experience.

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

Cruise Market Watch

Top 10 most interesting specialty cruises

by Cruise Market Watch | Apr 7, 2009 | Top 10 Lists | 1 comment

One of the things I love about the cruise industry is the broad consumer interest in the product.  And as the cruise industry expands so does the number of specialty or themed cruises appealing to ever more diverse groups.  Be it the political right or left, religious or gothic, athletes or dialysis patients, intellectual or not-so-much-so, there is a cruise for everyone.  While running the Caribbean Carriage Company in Old San Juan I observed football themed cruises where fans sailed with pro players. I have blogged about John Mayer's Mayercraft Cruise , Bikes on Board and Deaf Cruises .  In fact,  www.themecruisefinder.com  lists over 500 different theme cruises (yes, even two blogger cruises).  In 2008 a total of 15 percent of cruise business was dedicated to a theme.

Joining consumers with fervently shared passions and the great value of a cruise vacation is a win-win marketing strategy. Aside from the traditional vacation benefits, the groups receive great physical locations for lectures and social mingling.  The cruise lines fill cabins and generate revenue, but also penetrate into new markets of first time cruisers who have a high likelihood of returning.

Here is my list of the top 10 most interesting specialty cruises.

4 Islands - 4 Races - 1 Great Marathon. This is the theme cruise I think is an outright good idea.  Aboard Holland America's Eurodam from February 6-13, 2010 you can run the world's only staged maritime marathon. Every day brings a new distance, new terrain and new racing experience. By the end of the week you'll have run the marathon distance (26.2 miles) and have seen some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. John & Jenny's onboard talks and sessions will help you become a better runner.  They also host an Alaska marathon cruise.

Departing from Los Angeles, California on "stardate" 10.11.2009 fans "beam aboard" the "star ship" Mariner of the Seas. Embarking on the ultimate Star Trek experience will last seven days take you to Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta. Highlights include:

  • Meeting Star Trek celebrities, including Chase Masterson (Dabo girl Leeta on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and one of  Femme Fatales Magazine's 50 Sexiest Women).
  • Attending an exclusive screening of independent film "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men."
  • A Star Trek Murder Mystery where you help solve the crime and possibly become part of the cast.

Think "Antiques Roadshow" but on Norwegian Cruise Line's Majesty. The 7-Day Bermuda round-trip departs from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania October 24, 2009.  Participants will:

  • Get antiques appraised by Dr. Lori
  • Attend antiques seminars, such as "Yard Sale Mistakes Revealed"
  • Play Dumpster or No Dumpster

Conducting 53 clothing-optional cruises over 20 years proves the staying power of an alternative dressing style. Bare Necessities currently offers a March 13, 2010 - 15 day cruise from San Diego to the Hawaiian Islands and back aboard Celebrity's Constellation.

Activities include not only "deciding what not to wear," but also educational classes and workshops.

Departing January 3, 2010 this 7-Day Bahamas from Baltimore, Maryland cruise turns the Carnival Pride into a floating Graceland.  The King's 75 th  birthday celebration also includes:

  • A meet & greet Elvis cocktail party
  • Jay Allan covering the King's entire career - 50's tribute, '68 Comeback and 70 Vegas!

According to Susan, an Elvis Presley Super Fan & Graceland Gate Girl,  "I see many, but Jay's the first I have seen with that soul of Elvis"

Another King cruise, this one is hosted by Jerry "The King" Lawler aboard the Carnival Destiny for 5 days starting October 1, 2009.  The ship departs from Miami and sails to Cozumel & Key West. You will be treated to:

  • Never before seen videos of classic wrestling matches
  • Stories that only The King could tell - about the colorful people in wrestling
  • The truth about Andy Kaufman
  • Photo and autograph sessions
  • The art of The King (numbered & framed)
  • Tanning sessions on deck with The King

O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?  Thou art traveling aboard the Crystal Serenity for Lisbon Portugal via the Azores from Miami May 23rd to June 2nd, 2009.

Fourteen lectures are offered by noteworthy academic experts on Shakespeare's works.  "You'll be immersed in the cultural and theatrical milieu of the Bard's work and times.  Come feast on words, experiences, insights, and interactions with kindred spirits."

I admit it, I sing the words to Freebird out loud whenever I'm alone and the song comes on.

From Tampa to Cozumel on the Carnival Inspiration January 21-25, 2010  Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man Cruise is a four-day music festival.  Remember to bring your aspirin.  Last years cruise ran out of beer and broke all ship alcohol sales records.

The "Ocean Spray Dancers" are appearing Saturday, April 25 2009 for a 7-day Caribbean cruise from Miami on Carnival's Liberty.

Join them and workout icon Richard Simmons while you "sweat to the hits of the 50's, 60's,70's, 80's, 90's, and 2000's."  Besides dinning and exercising with Richard, other activities include:

  • Rise and Shines
  • Richard's 50's - 60's Prom Party
  • Richard's Awards Party
  • Margaritaville with Richard

Part of the Personal Enrichment Series this 12-night Mediterranean cruise sails from Venice to Barcelona. It also happens to be the second on our list aboard the Crystal Serenity. One perk, guests have the opportunity to pre-book private Food and Wine Pairing Dinner in the intimate Vintage Room.

Itinerary includes:

  • Attending lectures, fashion shows, themed dinners and cocktail parties
  • Enjoying relevant movies and documentaries celebrating the exciting and ever-changing world of fashion
  • Joining optional shopping excursions ashore and visiting historical textile/costume factories

The Magic of Disney’s Themed Cruises

Disney Cruises are much more than just voyages. They are magical escapades where stories come to life.

While almost every Disney Cruise has a theme night (such as Pirate Night or Frozen Night), those events are limited to only a few hours — typically just dinner and a deck party afterward.

Themed Disney cruises elevate this experience by infusing specific themes into every corner of the cruise, creating an immersive adventure for at least one full day — if not the entire cruise. These include:

  • Unique Atmosphere : From staterooms to dining areas, the entire ship transforms according to the theme.
  • Tailored Entertainment : Witness shows, parades, and fireworks displays tailored to the cruise’s unique theme.
  • Themed Activities : Every activity, whether it’s a treasure hunt or a dance party, is designed to resonate with the theme.

Now, let’s look at the six themed cruises that Disney Cruise Line currently offers and one that may or may not be returning.

A Themed Disney Cruise with an Uncertain Future

At least one popular specialty cruise is in limbo at the moment.

7. Star Wars Day at Sea (Suspended)

Combining the magic of Disney with the allure of a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars Day at Sea became an instant hit among cruise aficionados and Star Wars enthusiasts alike. From its inauguration in 2016 up to 2022, these specialized Disney Caribbean cruises set sail on 7-day voyages, punctuated by a special day where Star Wars reigned supreme, complete with characters wandering the decks, movie-themed events, and even the ship’s horn playing the iconic “Imperial March.”

During these 7-Night Caribbean adventures departing from Port Canaveral, passengers were treated to:

  • Epic Encounters : Memorable moments with Star Wars icons, including Chewbacca, R2-D2, and Darth Vader.
  • Out-of-this-World Entertainment : Evening celebrations highlighted by Star Wars music and an unforgettable seaside fireworks display.
  • Galactic Activities : Engagements ranging from costume events, dedicated movie screenings, and trivia to youth club sessions featuring the endearing BB-8.

Unfortunately, as of 2023, this cherished voyage has been put on hiatus . The event’s future remains uncertain despite being a top destination for Star Wars fans from its birth in 2016 to its final cruise in 2022. There is some speculation among fans that the Star Wars cruises were halted due to the launch of the land-locked Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World, but that experience is no longer being offered. Will Star Wars Day at Sea come back?  Know, we do not.

Q & A on Disney’s Special Themed Cruises

Q: how kid-friendly are these cruises.

A: Disney cruises, themed or otherwise, are designed with families in mind. Kids of all ages will find entertainment, activities, and characters catered to them.

Q: Are there adult-only areas on these cruises?

A: Absolutely! While the cruises are family-focused, there are adult-exclusive areas such as Disney’s specialty restaurants , nightclubs, lounges, and spas to ensure that adults have their own sanctuary of relaxation and fun.

Q: Can we still enjoy standard cruise amenities on themed cruises?

A: Yes, the themed cruises offer all the standard included amenities like gourmet dining, entertainment, pools, etc., in addition to the special themed activities and events.

Q: Are costumes allowed or encouraged on these themed cruises?

A: Costumes are encouraged, especially for theme-specific days like Marvel Day or Halloween on the High Seas. However, there are costume guidelines, especially for adults, to ensure a safe and inclusive environment. Don’t wear anything that’s “obstructive, objectionable, offensive, or violent”– and don’t bring anything that looks like a weapon (even a toy one). Costume masks that cover the face may only be worn while standing still to have a photo taken with a character. Make sure you consult all of the costume guidelines as you’re making your packing list so you don’t accidentally bring something prohibited onboard.

Q: What if we are not big fans of the specific theme? Will we still enjoy the cruise?

A: While the themes add an extra layer of magic, Disney Cruise Line offers a robust range of entertainment and activities. So even if you’re not a fan of the specific theme, there’s still plenty to enjoy.

Q: Given the slightly higher cost, are special-themed Disney cruises worth it?

A : Weighing the worth of special-themed Disney cruises depends on individual preferences and what one seeks in a vacation experience.

  • Pros : These themed cruises present world-class entertainment, exclusive events, and one-of-a-kind experiences, catering especially to die-hard fans and those looking for something more than the usual cruise.
  • Cons : The premium price might be a barrier for some, and travelers not particularly enamored with the specific theme might not see the added value.

Final Thought : Disney’s special themed cruises are more than just a cruise; they are an immersive narrative journey that brings beloved stories to life. Jaimie and I love the festive seasons, so Halloween and Christmas-themed cruises are a big deal for us. They are undeniably worth the extra investment.

Disney Bought Jeffrey Epstein's Island to Build a Theme Park?

According to an article, the island would be used as a cruise stop., anna rascouët-paz, published april 12, 2024.

Labeled Satire

About this rating

On March 8, 2024, Mouse Trap News posted a TikTok video positing that Disney was buying the island of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to build a theme park:

The video had gained more than 183,000 views and 12,000 likes, as of this writing.

Along with the video, Mouse Trap News published an article with the same story:

The Walt Disney Company Buys Epstein Island The Walt Disney Company officially buys Epstein Island. They plan to build a new theme park there as well as make it a stop for their cruise ships. In fact, Disney purchased the island for a whopping $3 billion.

However, this item was not a factual recounting of real-life events. Mouse Trap News  describes its output as being humorous or satirical in nature, as follows:

Mouse Trap News is the world's best satire and parody site. We write fake stories about Disney Parks stuff. From Disney Park announcements to Disney Hotel and resort news to made-up Disney partnerships, you can be assured that anything you read here is not true, real, or accurate, but it is fun. So technically our slogan The Moused Trusted Name in Disney News isn't true, but we thought it was creative and funny, so we are running with it.

In June 2023, we  debunked a rumor that Disney Cruises made a stop on Epstein's island.

For background, here is why we sometimes write about satire/humor.

  • ERIN (35D: "The Night Circus" author Morgenstern) The Night Circus is the 2011 debut novel of ERIN Morgenstein . The fantasy novel spent seven weeks on The New York Times Best Seller List. On her website, ERIN Morgenstein says she lives with "the world's cutest kitten." That's subjective, of course (and I beg to disagree!), but her cat is pretty cute, and has its own Instagram account .

  • NOD (30A: Place a bid at a silent auction, say) This clue confused me a bit, because the silent auctions I'm familiar with involve writing bids down (either in person or online) rather than using a NOD. However, I do know a NOD can serve as an indication of a bid in an in-person auction, so I was able to deduce the answer with some help from crossing answers.
  • NEO (42A: Keanu's "The Matrix" role) In  The Matrix  movies - of which there have been four to date - Keanu Reeves portrays computer programmer Thomas Anderson, who operates as a hacker using the name NEO. The name NEO is an anagram of "one." In  The Matrix , "The One" refers to a randomly selected human that carries a special code. I have never seen The Matrix, but I have learned this information from solving crosswords.
  • NATO (52A: ___ phonetic alphabet) The NATO Phonetic Alphabet is a widely used radiotelephone spelling alphabet. Like the Greek Alphabet, references to the NATO phonetic alphabet make occasional appearances in crossword puzzles. I like to review these alphabets when they appear to keep this information semi-fresh in my mind. Therefore, today I will remind you that in the NATO phonetic alphabet, N is for November, O is for Oscar, P is for Papa, and Q is for Quebec.
  • COVER-UP TATTOO (53A: Fix for unwanted ink) A person may get a COVER-UP TATTOO for a number of reasons. For example, some TATTOOs that reference former relationships may be COVERed UP by another TATTOO as an alternative to getting the previous TATTOO removed. A COVER-UP TATTOO may also be used to cover a skin condition or scar.
  • HAIR (62A: "Aquarius" musical) "Aquarius" is the opening number of the 1968 rock musical HAIR . "This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius / age of Aquarius..."
  • BIONIC (1D: Like an electronically enhanced body part) I wrote about BIONIC prosthetic devices last month .
  • ASIAN (5D: The first "A" of AAPI) AAPI is an abbreviation for ASIAN American and Pacific Islander. AAPI Heritage Month is celebrated in May. This clue reminded me of two previous puzzles that celebrate AAPI Heritage,  one by Paolo Pasco , and  the other by Hoang-Kim Vu & Erica Hsiang Wojcik . (Speaking of Paolo Pasco , congratulations to him for winning the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament held in Stamford, Connecticut earlier this month!)
  • HELSINKI (9D: Capital on the Gulf of Finland) HELSINKI is the capital and most populous city of Finland. As the clue informs us, it is located on the Gulf of Finland.
  • VWS (32D: Tiguans, Beetles and e-Golfs) I'm not familiar with the Volkswagen (VW) Tiguan, a crossover VW SUV manufactured since 2007, but I recognized Beetles and e-Golfs (the e stands for electric) as VWS. Production of the e-Golf ended in 2020; VW replaced it with a new electric vehicle, the ID.3.
  • KAMA (34D: ___ Sutra) The  KAMA Sutra  is an ancient Sanskrit text dating to between 400 and 300 BCE. Perhaps the most well-known parts of the KAMA Sutra are those concerning sexuality and eroticism.
  • SATIRE (46D: The Onion's genre) The Onion  was started in 1988 by Tim Keck and Christopher Johnson, who were University of Wisconsin students at the time. It began as a weekly print newspaper, and has grown to be a digital media company, which also runs  The A.V. Club .  The Onion  presents SATIRE so convincingly it is occasionally mistaken as real news.
  • MOSES (50D: "___: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom") MOSES: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom is a 2006 picture book written by Carole Boston Weatherford and illustrated by Kadir Nelson. It is a Caldecott Honor book, and won a Coretta Scott King Award.
  • ASHE (56D: 1975 Wimbledon champ Arthur) Arthur ASHE (1943-1993) won the U.S. Open in 1968. He went on to win the Australian Open in 1970, and Wimbledon in 1975.

Crossword Puzzle Theme Synopsis

  • CONCEPT ALBUMS (18A: Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and Beyonce's "Lemonade," for two)
  • KEPT A LOW PROFILE (34A: Avoided attention)
  • COVER-UP TATTOO (53A: Fix for unwanted ink)

The letters PTA are found MEETING at the junction of two words in each theme answer: CONCE PT A LBUMS, KE PT A LOW PROFILE, and COVER-U P TA TTOO.

As my children are now young adults, it's been some time since I attended a PTA MEETING. The title of today's puzzle brought back memories. This is a fun theme, and I appreciate that the letters PTA are not simply hidden in each theme answer, but are MEETING across two words. Thank you, Lynn, for this enjoyable puzzle.
