WEATHER ALERT

2 river flood warnings in effect for Brantley and Glynn Counties

After 2 years of turbulence, jay monahan focused on moving golf forward, pga tour commissioner says at players he sees ‘positive’ outcome.

Justin Barney , Sports editor

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Jay Monahan pulled up a chair at TPC Sawgrass and talked about the state of golf, something he’d done in a far more biting tone in recent years.

On Tuesday at The Players Championship, the PGA Tour commissioner was far more about reconciliation and moving the game forward after a bitter two years of barbs and public fighting that have no doubt fractured the sport. Golfers still aren’t sure what to make of Monahan’s pivot from last year, but he is ready to move forward.

Recommended Videos

Questions about the PGA Tour’s involvement with LIV Golf were still relevant, but from a different aspect this time. Monahan has softened his tone, and the conversation has shifted from bitter to acceptance. The Tour and the PIF (the Public Investment Fund) are making progress on what the sport will look like in the future. The golfing world doesn’t quite know what that will look like yet, but it’s inching its way along.

“It’s going to take time, but I reiterate what I said at the Tour Championship in August. I see a positive outcome for the PGA Tour and the sport as a whole,” Monahan said.

“Most importantly, I see a positive outcome for our great fans. Despite the distractions over the last two years, fans, sponsors and communities continue to value and engage with the PGA Tour, and I am more confident than ever in the fundamental strength of our organization.”

After a topsy-turvy two years of back and forth with rival league, LIV Golf, the PGA Tour agreed to a landmark merger with the Saudi’s Public Investment Fund last June. Discussions continue on what that ultimate merger will look like when things are finally finalized, but Monahan has had to do damage control, especially among the PGA Tour landscape.

“I think it’s really important that we’re all rowing in the same direction,” said golfer Patrick Cantlay. “I think with this PGA Tour Enterprises board, I think it’s really exciting that we do have a chance to kind of start with something new and all move together in the right direction.

Monahan was far more diplomatic this year than he’s been over the past two years about LIV when he openly strafed the rival entity about poaching PGA Tour players. It has been hostile and combative at times, something Monahan said he could have toned down.

“But obviously when you look back to last summer I could have handled that better, and I’ve taken full responsibility and accountability for that. That’s on me,” he said.

“But we’ve moved on, and we’ve made so much progress since that point in time and I have learned from it. I’ve been humbled by it. I think I’ve gotten stronger as a leader, and the progress that we have made since that point in time …”

Fans and the product are the main concerns for the PGA Tour now, but the fractured game of golf has certainly left many across the game upset.

“If the fans are upset, then look at the guys that left. We had a tour, we were all together, and the people that left are no longer here,” said defending Players champion Scottie Scheffler. “At the end of the day, that’s where the splintering comes from. As far as our Tour goes, like I said, we’re doing our best to create the best product for the fans, and that’s really where we’re at.”

Xander Schauffele wasn’t quite ready to say that the commissioner has earned back confidence from Tour golfers quite yet. Players struggled in the aftermath of the merger last year, many feeling backstabbed after all of Monahan’s public quotes to the contrary.

“Trust is something that’s pretty tender, so words are words, and I would say in my book he’s got a long way to go,” Schauffele said. “He could be the guy, but in my book, he’s got a long way to go to gain the trust of the membership. I’m sure he’s got the support of the board, since they were with him making some of those decisions, but for me personally he’s got quite a ways to go.”

Monahan was also asked about the future of Tiger Woods here. Have we seen the last of Woods at TPC Sawgrass? Woods hasn’t played here since 2019 and has struggled with injuries since a serious one-car accident in 2021. Woods played just twice in 2022-23 and withdrew in the second round of the Genesis Invitational this year due to illness.

Woods would need a special exemption to compete at the Players, something Monahan was asked about Tuesday.

“I think you all know Tiger well enough to know that he wants to earn his way into all of -- into every competition,” Monahan said. “That’s his makeup. But I think as you go forward and as you evolve as an organization and you think about how do you serve and satisfy a rabid fan base, those discussions more broadly would likely be held at the Policy Board meeting, and I’m sure we would have that discussion. But he would be the hardest one to convince.

Players 2024: Rory McIlroy says he's 'comfortable' with both drops he took in strong opening round at Sawgrass

P ONTE VEDRA BEACH — For eight holes on Thursday morning, Rory McIlroy could do no wrong. Three straight birdies to start, then three more on 14, 16 and 17 (McIlroy began on the back nine), put the former Players champ at six under. Solo leader at the time. He was bouncing around TPC Sawgrass as only he can.

RELATED: Rory McIlroy knows the PGA Tour's problem, and he has the solution

All it takes is one iffy swing at Sawgrass' par-4 18th to kill the vibe, though. Not even a man dressed in full leprechaun garb left of the tee box could luck McIlroy's ball back into the fairway has it hooked directly toward the water down the left side. Well, maybe not directly toward the water, which led to another issue entirely.

McIlroy believed his ball had last crossed land somewhere between a red stake some 300 yards from the hole and a group of birds perched just on the edge of the fairway a few yards ahead. His playing partners, Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland, had their doubts. This is not Hovland's first rodeo when it comes to "where it last crossed" discourse at this event . McIlroy allowed Spieth to hit first before the discussion over re-teeing or taking his drop up in the fairway continued.

Spieth, who is never afraid to talk it out, wasn't entirely sure of the exact point it last crossed. Hovland's caddie, Shay Knight, said to McIlroy "that's where I had it, too," indicating he agreed with McIlroy's opinion. Once that happened, the group marched ahead and McIlroy took his drop in the fairway, 293 yards from the hole. His towering 3-wood found the green 60 feet from the hole and he escaped with a two-putt bogey. Everyone seemed at peace with how it all played out.

Seven holes later, however, came DropGate, Part 2, and this one featured a much livelier discussion than the one that took place on the 18th tee box. At the par-4 seventh, McIlroy again pulled his tee shot, though this time it appeared to hit grass first before bounding into the water on the PGA Tour live feed. McIlroy went up to the spot he believed it crossed, took his two club lengths and then took his drop. Then all hell broke loose:

The issue in question was whether or not McIlroy's ball had first landed on the right side of the red line. McIlroy was adamant that it had, hence why he took his drop. Seven minutes of discussion later and he suddenly wasn't as sure.

"I was adamant that I saw it bounce above the red line," he said afterward. "But then when someone comes in and says, well, someone thought that it didn't. Then you're like -- it just puts some doubt in your mind. Again, it's up to you to be comfortable enough with your decision that you did see what you saw, I guess."

Much like the situation at the 18th, all three players ultimately agreed on the spot. McIlroy failed to escape with bogey this time, just missing a 10-footer and cleaning up the rest for what could have been a momentum-killing double-bogey six. On his final hole of the day, the par-5 ninth, he poured in a birdie putt from 17 feet to get one of those two shots back and finish with a seven-under 65 despite to water balls. A "take that" fist pump immediately followed.

"It was disappointing not to get that up-and-down on 7, but that's probably why I give it a little mini-fist pump on 9 to feel like I got one of those shots back," he said.

Hovland, who finished at two over, declined to speak with the media. As did Spieth, who finished at one over. McIlroy said afterward he had no issue with how both situations at the 18th and the seventh were handled.

"I think Jordan was just trying to make sure that I was doing the right thing," said McIlroy. "I mean, I was pretty sure that my ball had crossed where I was sort of dropping it. It's so hard, right, because there was no TV evidence. I was adamant. But I think, again, he was just trying to make sure that I was going to do the right thing.

"If anything, I was being conservative with it. I think at the end of the day we're all trying to protect ourselves, protect the field, as well. I wouldn't say it was needless. I think he was just trying to make sure that what happened was the right thing."

McIlroy added that he believes he's one of the most conscientious golfers on tour when it comes to the rules.

"If I feel like I've done something wrong, it'll play on my conscience for the rest of the tournament. I'm a big believer in karma, and if you do something wrong, I feel like it's going to come around and bite you at some point.

"I obviously don't try to do anything wrong out there, and play by the rules and do the right thing. I feel like I obviously did that those two drops."
