A country caught in a cultural time warp,   Cuba   is a bright snapshot of the mid-20th century; a true feast for the senses. Watch as Cadillacs roll down the coastal boulevards, walk through traditional tobacco plantations in Vinales and see cigar production in full swing, laze on the shores of the   Caribbean   on some of the world’s whitest sands, and feel the sultry and spicy vibes of salsa as you dance the night away in Havana. With all of this on offer in one of the world’s best climates, what’s stopping you from checking out Cuba’s kaleidoscope of color and charisma?

Culture and customs.

With   Spanish ,   African   , and Creole influences, modern Cuba is home to so many cultural components – some of which don’t feel super ‘modern’ at all!

You won’t be surprised that Cubans love music and dancing – with everything from Afro-Cuban rhythms to classic melodies filling the air in clubs, bars, restaurants, and on street corners. The modern arts are also alive here, with ballet, contemporary dance, and film rising in popularity – so much so, Havana is now home to internationally recognized film, literature, and music festivals.

Living in a Communist country means Cubans sometimes go without the luxury items that many Westerners take for granted, with certain foods and consumer goods not available. Despite this, events like birthdays, holidays, and marriages are celebrated with gusto, with special meals, music, and dance featuring. This love of life is also evident in the street parties, festivals, and fiestas that are celebrated throughout the year. Coffee, cigars, and rum flow freely, and people dance to the sound of trumpets and guitars in city streets.

Life in the cities and life in rural areas can be quite different, but the pace of living is consistently Cuban – you’re on local time now, so go with the flow. Experience Cuban culture on our 8 day Beautiful Cuba trip.

History and government

Ancient history.

Before the arrival of the Spanish in 1492, Cuba was home to Mesoamerican cultures, including the indigenous Guanajatabey and Taino people. The Guanajatabey were hunter-gatherers and fishers, and Taino communities also harvested yuca, cotton, and tobacco. Spanish colonialist Bartolome de las Casas estimated that Taino populations in Cuba had reached 350,000 by the end of the 15th century.

By then, Christopher Columbus had landed in Cuba and claimed the land for   Spain, naming it Isla Juana. In 1511, Diego Velazquez de Cuellar founded Baracoa, the first Spanish settlement in Cuba, and three years later what’s now known as Havana was built.

20th century

In 1902, after periods under Spanish, British, and United States rule and involvement in the Spanish–American war, Cuba got its independence. Despite the economy booming, leaders at this time ruled through corruption and control. This was until revolutionary Fidel Castro led a 9000-strong guerrilla army into Havana in 1959, forcing military dictator Fulgencio Batista to flee. Castro became the leader and his brother, Raul, his deputy. What followed was an attempt by the United States to overthrow Castro’s communist rule at the Bay of Pigs, and tension and trade embargoes following the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Standing alongside Castro as an equally prominent political figure, Che Guevara (although Argentinean) holds a very important place in Cuban history. A revolutionary, author, doctor, and military leader, Guevara played a pivotal role in the guerrilla campaign leading up to the Cuban Revolution and the defense of the Bay of Pigs, as well as in diplomatic relations, up until his death in 1967. It’s impossible not to notice the reverence for Guevara when visiting Cuba, with street art, statues, and museums dedicated to the man Cubans simply call ‘El Che’ found all over the country.

In April 2011 Fidel Castro was succeeded as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba by his brother Raul Castro. Cuba’s political relationship with other countries, including its close neighbors, is ever-evolving, with the US recently beginning to ease restrictions on trade, tourism, and other industries. But a snapshot of 50 years of isolation remains in the cars, architecture, and culture that is a contemporary Cuban street. Learn about Cuba's fascinating past on our 15 day Best of Cuba adventure.

Eating and drinking

Cuba may not have culinary fame compared to some of its neighbors, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be missing out on some great food during your time here. Cuba typically doesn’t have access to a wide range of ingredients, so your dining experience may not be as varied as you’d expect from some other   nearby destinations. Regardless, there are some Central American favorites that are definitely worth trying. Try out the local cuisine on our 8 day Cuba Highlights tour.

What to eat in Cuba

Pastelitos These small pastries can be either sweet or savory. Cream cheese, guava, and beef are the most popular fillings and make for a cheap, tasty meal on the run. Think empanadas, Cuban style.

Cuban sandwich Otherwise known as a mixto, this sandwich is a simple snack that has made its way north into Florida and has become one of the quintessential images of Cuban food beyond its borders. Ham, pork, cheese, mustard, and sometimes salami layered between bread and grilled – what’s not to like?

Ropa vieja Not only is this one of the national dishes of Cuba, but it’s also found all over the Caribbean, in Spain, and even the Philippines! It may literally translate to ‘old clothes’, but that’s definitely not what it tastes like – slow-cooked pulled beef with vegetables, usually served with maduros (fried plantains), black beans, and rice.

Fritura de maiz These deep-fried cheese and cornmeal fritters are popular street food snacks in Cuba. A great choice for vegetarians; throw a couple of these back and you’ll be feeling the Cuban spirit.

Moros y cristianos

Rice and beans is ot just rice and beans. Black beans and white rice are added to a base of peppers, garlic, and onion and simmered with herbs, creating a flavorful addition to any meal and served up at virtually every Cuban restaurant you'll come across.

If you're a little bit peckish and are on the go, seek out some tostones. These twice-fried plantain chips are very popular in a lot of Latin America countries and are an easy (and often cheap) snack.

Although flan is known all around Central and South America as an essential dessert, Cuban flan has a slightly different spin. It's made with evaporated and sweetened condensed milk, giving it a thicker and creamier caramel custard finish than fresh milk varities. Get ready for a seriously delicious sugar high.

Coppelia ice cream Line up with locals to savor a sweet scoop from Coppelia ice cream parlor. This Cuban institution serves tried and true flavors like chocolate and vanilla as well as exotic favorites like mango and coconut.

What to drink in Cuba

Rum The tipple of choice in Cuba is rum, obviously. Savour some Havana Club straight up, have it mixed in a minty mojito, or sip on a Cuba Libre – rum, cola, and lime.

Coffee Cuban coffee is of legendary quality, so be sure to get your caffeine hit with a small but rich cup of liquid gold. Drink it like the locals do, as a cafecito or Cafe Cubano. This type of espresso-style coffee is usually sweetened with raw cane sugar and stirred in with the first drips of espresso to get the best result.

Geography and environment

This island nation sitting in the Caribbean Sea is home to a diverse range of environments: rolling hills to tobacco plantations, beaches, and coral reefs to tropical rainforests. With more than 20% of the island covered with natural parks, there's incredible biodiversity, making it a great place for eco-adventures, hiking, snorkeling, and diving.

Large cities like Havana evoke a time gone by. Grand buildings dating back to the 1950s exude a fading beauty, which makes for great photographs but can also make daily life quite difficult. Due to a lack of building materials, new housing, and infrastructure are rare, making living conditions quite cramped for Cuban city dwellers. Rural life offers more space and a quieter pace, but reduced access to services. Regardless of where you holiday in Cuba, the people are generally kind and hospitable in both the big cities and small towns. Wander the magnificent landscapes, both natural and manmade, on our 8 day One Week in Cuba adventure.

Cuba may not be known for its shopping, but look closely and you’ll find lots of unique souvenirs to take home as a reminder of your holiday. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import some items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, for example, have strict quarantine laws. The United States also has restrictions on the amount of tobacco and alcohol that can be brought back from Cuba.

What to buy

Art Cuba has a keen appreciation of the fine arts, so it’s not hard to find unique artworks by up-and-coming local artists being sold at galleries and markets. It also makes for a meaningful memento of your time away.

Cigars The cliche is unsurprisingly true – cigars are everywhere in Cuba. Be sure to buy cigars from authorized sellers, as fakes are common. Purchasing straight from the factory is usually best.

Coffee Cuban coffee is top quality, so stock up before you leave to enjoy a taste of Cuba in the comfort of your own home. Do check, however, if your country of origin allows plant-based materials to pass through quarantine.

Music With such a rich musical heritage, Cuba is a great place to pick up a hand-crafted instrument or, if traveling light, a CD or a local artist’s info to add to your playlist.

Do some serious souvenir shopping on our 8 day Premium Cuba tour.

Festivals and events

Havana international jazz festival.

Local and international artists head to Havana every January to become a part of the happening jazz scene. From the impressive Teatro Nacional de Cuba to the city streets, the sweet sounds of jazz fill the air of Havana for the duration of the festival.

Habanos Cigar Festival

In February, cigar connoisseurs gather to celebrate their love of the best cigar in the world – the Habano. With tastings, visits to plantations and factories, master classes, and cigar-rolling contests on offer, this festival will intrigue curious travelers and delight cigar enthusiasts.

Santiago de Cuba Carnival

Watch this historic city come alive in July with street parades full of vibrant costumes, drums, and dancing. This epic public celebrations date back to at least the 17th century and are held all around the country, but Santiago de Cuba hosts the biggest, brightest, and most traditional of them all.

Cuba travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Cuba?

Cuba's subtropical climate is ideal for exploration, with most places catching the cool trade winds that blow in from the coast, providing pleasant year-round temperatures. June, July and August are usually the hottest months – the dry season runs from November to April and the wet season from May to October. Even in the rainy season, downpours are short and shouldn't impede travel plans. Tropical storms and hurricanes are more prevalent in September and October but rarely cause problems for travelers.

Do I need a visa to travel to Cuba?

Tourists of most nationalities require a 'Tourist Card' which is similar to a tourist visa. These can be obtained through travel agents in your home country, or directly from Cuban embassies and consulates. Depending on the airline you are traveling with to Cuba, you may also be able to purchase the tourist card at the airport from the airline on the day of your departure – please check with your airline for more information.

If you are a US citizen, American permanent resident, or hold any type of American Visa and are considering traveling to Cuba, please refer to the US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs website –  travel.state.gov  – for the latest advice.

We recommend traveling to Cuba via Canada, Europe, and South or Central America. Travelers who have been to Cuba are ineligible to participate in the ESTA Visa Wavier Program and must apply for a tourist visa to enter or transit via the United States.

Remember to check the entry requirements for any destinations you will travel or transit through both to and from Cuba.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Cuba?

As most Cubans live modest lifestyles, leaving a tip for good service is a great idea and welcomed.

There is almost always free entertainment in bars and restaurants; the musicians and singers are usually not paid by the venue, so we encourage you to tip when you have enjoyed the performance. Tour leaders, restaurant workers, hotel porters, cleaning staff and taxi drivers will appreciate a small sum – but be sure to tip in Cuban pesos as foreign currency isn’t easily exchanged in Cuba.

It’s important to carry around small denominations of currency to leave tips during your holiday, so you can tip an amount you feel comfortable with.

What is the internet access like in Cuba?

Internet access isn't widespread throughout Cuba, but availability is improving. The internet can sometimes be accessed from government departments and larger hotels, and main squares in many cities now have wi-fi accessibility. You will need to purchase an internet card from certain hotels and outlets to gain access in any location, including in public areas.

Please note that although connectivity is improving, the connection may still be slow, some websites may be censored, and the cost is typically quite high.

Can I use my cell phone while in Cuba?

Your cell phone may or may not work while in Cuba, depending on what type of phone you have. Before leaving your home country, ensure roaming is activated with your provider, but be aware that your phone may not get reception due to Cuba having the lowest cell phone network penetration in Latin America.

If you intend to activate global roaming while in Cuba, be sure to check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur when using this option, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in Cuba?

Public toilets are rare in Cuba, but western-style flushable toilets are available in hotels, bars, and restaurants. Bringing your own toilet paper and hand soap or hand sanitizer is recommended as often these are not provided. Due to import restrictions, toilet seats can be considered a luxury and may be missing from some facilities.

What will it cost for a...?

Cuba's unit of currency is the peso (CUP). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Can of soft drink or bottle of water = 1-2 CUP
  • Cup of coffee = 1.50 CUP
  • Cocktail = 2-5 CUP
  • Meal in a nice restaurant = 120+ CUP
  • One hour of wi-fi = 25 CUP

Can I drink the water in Cuba?

It's not advisable to drink water from the tap in Cuba. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable bottle or canteen with filtered water if you can – your group leader will provide larger and less disposable water containers for refills on private transport days when they have the resources available. It's also best to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Cuba?

Some credit cards are accepted in Cuba (Visa and Mastercard are usually more widely accepted), although some cards linked to US banking institutions won't be accepted. Debit cards (even Visa debit) generally have problems working. We recommend you bring multiple cards from different banks to be sure you have access to funds. Ensure you also have enough cash and other forms of payment, as credit card facilities may not always be available.

What is ATM access like in Cuba?

ATMs are accessible in large cities like Havana and Santiago de Cuba but are rare and almost non-existent in other parts of Cuba. Ensure you have other payment options available in case you cannot access an ATM while traveling.

What is the weather like in Cuba?

Cuba enjoys Caribbean vibes all year round, and sits below the Tropic of Cancer, so you’ll enjoy a tropical climate with north-easterly trade winds that blow year-round.

May to October is usually considered the wet season, with higher maximum temperatures each day (around 90°F) and more sunlight each day, averaging 10 hours. September and October is hurricane season in the region, and this time of year is usually hot and overcast, with a higher chance of rainfall.

November to April is usually the drier season in Cuba, with maximum temperatures sitting around 79°F and an average of 8 hours of sunlight each day. The winter months are clearer, slightly more humid, and more comfortable than summer.

Is Cuba safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Cuba has made some significant steps in recent years to ensure LGBTQIA+ rights in the country. Homosexuality is legal and accepted in Cuba, and there are some anti-discrimination laws in place for employment, service provisions, and gender identity. However, same-sex marriage recognition is still pending, and stigma still remains in some parts of society, especially in rural areas.

The Cuban National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) works to support the LGBTQIA+ community in Cuba and hosts rallies to educate and advocate.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Is Cuba accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

As Cuba has not had the same infrastructure development as other countries, you may find some mobility challenges when traveling. Havana’s streets are often crowded, and sidewalks can at times be rugged or even nonexistent. This is the same with other cities and towns around the country. Also, a lot of public transportation isn’t geared toward travelers who use a wheelchair, so private travel may be the only option to get around.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Trip Reviews & Photos

We love hearing your stories and seeing your photos! Check out our entire fan photo gallery and upload your photos.

Havana A throwback to another generation, Havana's old-world charm is a glimpse into the heart of this fascinating country. Old cobbled plazas and historic buildings turned museums are juxtaposed with popular nightclubs and hotels that still exude a 1950s atmosphere. Don't miss the chance to explore Habana Vieja (Old Havana), a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of narrow and winding cobbled streets and almost 1,000 buildings of historical significance. Paladares, private restaurants Amid a culinary revolution, dining in Cuba becomes an adventure as thousands of little-known (and sometimes even secret!) independent restaurants have exploded across the island. Relaxed government regulations on private business have facilitated this growing industry—with more than 2,000 newly opened eateries. Innovative restaurateurs have opened up in surprising locations, offering experiences that often rival dining in London or Paris. The flavorful food and atmosphere are comforting and authentic, and rich and complex dishes shatter the "rice and beans" stereotype. Don't forget to grab a freshly made mojito to follow your savory  ropa vieja  (braised, shredded beef)! Classic American cars Travel back in time as you ride in style in one of Havana's classic American cars. In the early 20th century, these incredibly-maintained automobiles were imported to Cuba for around 50 years; however, importing the classic cars came to a halt after the Cuban revolution. Today, Cuba is seen as a living museum for vintage cars, as it is common to see them in many different colors cruising along the streets. It's estimated that there are about 60,000 classic American cars in Cuba, with some dating back to the early 1930s! Casa Particular, Havana El Encanto de Perserverancia, the Cuban Bed and Breakfast on our  Authentic Havana  and  Authentic Havana & the Scenic Vinales Valley  tours, is a highlight in itself. This B&B, or casa particular, was hand-picked by our President Peggy Goldman during her many trips to Havana. It is a traditional colonial-style house that has been lovingly restored and converted into charming accommodations. The casa is privately owned, meaning your money goes directly into the pockets of the locals, and it offers a much more authentic, intimate, and satisfying stay versus the huge government-run hotels in the city. Our casa is also centrally located, only a seven-minute walk from the Malecon, the city's iconic sea wall. In addition, it is within easy walking distance of several trendy restaurants, including La Guarida, frequented by many American celebrities when they visit Havana. Plus, we give you the genuine experience of staying in a real Havana community with schools, cafes, and local shops nearby while only being a short drive from touristic Old Havana.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.

  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck trip for entry into Cuba. You will also need a visa to enter Cuba, the nature of which is somewhat different than what many other countries require. The Cuban government requires all foreign visitors to have a Cuban visa, sometimes referred to as a "Tourist Card," for which there is no official application process. Cuban immigration officials will collect one half of this two-part card upon your arrival in the country, and the other half upon your departure. Tauck will obtain your Cuban visa, which will be given to you in Miami, along with the documents for your included charter flight from Miami to Havana.

In addition, other special documentation will be needed to complete the requirements for travel to Cuba; more details about this required documentation will be sent to you with your booking confirmation. Please review the details in the Instruction Sheet and  Travel Affidavit . You must retain these documents for a period of at least five years.

Please Note: Because many of you are traveling as a U.S. citizen with Tauck on a People-to-People educational exchange travel itinerary operated under a license granted to Tauck by the United States Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), you are legally licensed and authorized to travel to Cuba.  Before departing on your trip, we will give you a Letter of Authorization from Tauck stating that you have permission to travel under that license, to keep as part of your travel documents.

If you are a citizen of another country but legally reside in the U.S., you may travel on Tauck's People-to-People trip to Cuba as long as you have a valid passport from your country of citizenship, as well as a residency card or alien card (or "green card") to establish your legal U.S. residency when returning to the U.S. from Cuba upon your arrival in Miami.

If you are a Cuban-born U.S. citizen, your travel document requirements depend on when you originally departed Cuba. If you departed Cuba prior to December 31, 1970, you will require either a PE-11 visa (which can take from six to eight weeks to process, is valid for a one-time entry for 30 days, and expires within 90 days of issue) or a Cuban passport; the choice is yours. If you left Cuba after January 1, 1971, you will require a Cuban passport, which can take from three to four months to obtain. If you will need help in obtaining one of these documents, please let us know at the time of booking.

If you are a citizen of another country and do not legally reside in the U.S., you may travel on Tauck's People-to-People trip to Cuba as long as you have the proper documentation that allows you to enter the U.S. for the start of the trip and return to the U.S. at the end of the trip. A multi-entry U.S. visa is required.

A travel affidavit is also required for all travelers to Cuba, regardless of nationality. Please use this link to apply for your travel affidavit at least 75 days prior to your trip: https://cubatravelservices.com/tauck-travel-affidavit/

Because all guests on this tour (U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens alike) will be arriving into Cuba from the U.S., a Cuban visa is required of all travelers. Tauck will obtain your Cuban visa for you during your tour.

Please note that you will not be traveling to Cuba as a tourist. You will be traveling as part of the People-to-People educational exchange.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen. You must retain these documents for a period of at least five years.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Health Safety and Mobility

Our People-to-People cultural exchange activities in Cuba include visits to rural areas, agricultural facilities and small villages, as well as to various sections of Havana with centuries-old streets and buildings with limited access. You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over unpaved and uneven terrain. Both the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove and the Meliá Habana are equipped with elevators.  The road conditions in Cuba are improving; however, paved roads, especially in rural areas, are often in poor condition. Some roads to rural locations are not paved and some out-of-the-way destinations are accessible only by these roads; other roads may be unpaved and bumpy. Our People-to-People cultural exchange itinerary includes several early morning starts and leaves little scheduled free time.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Travelers should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one traveler.  Travelers requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at the hotels on the journey, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on your motor coach.

The only hotel on this trip that allows smoking is the Meliá Habana in Havana.

Airline Disinsection

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click  here for more information.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

  • Touring Old Havana , an UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in 1519 and replete with Spanish-style architectural gems.
  • Reliving the days of Ernest Hemingway’s decades in Havana by visiting his finca and his many watering holes that are still dispensing daiquiris and mojitos.
  • Exploring the lively Cuban art scene, which you can find displayed in museums, galleries, and on street corners.
  • Enjoying creative Cuban cuisine , thick with Spanish influences that go way beyond beans and rice (though that’s good, too).
  • Spending some down time at one of Cuba’s hundreds of beaches, many of them completely unspoiled.
  • Touring some of Cuba’s eight other UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Santiago’s San Pedro de la Roca Castle, a massive fortress dating from the 17th century considered the finest example of Spanish-American military architecture.
  • Visiting 19th century-era coffee plantations in southeast Cuba, also declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
  • Watching the sunset sitting outside on a warm Havana night while sipping a mojito and eating freshly caught prawns tossed in garlic and pepper.

Cuba Tours & Travel Guide

Cuba Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Cuba video

Long closed to most U.S. travelers, Cuba is now subject to fewer travel restrictions, and Americans are discovering what the rest of the world has known for years: the island nation 90 miles south of Florida has friendly people, a vibrant culture, beautiful beaches, and 1950's-era cars that still run. No matter the politics, Cuba and its people are sure to leave a lasting impression on you.

Visiting Cuba is like entering a time warp. Because of longtime Cuban government restrictions placed on the purchase of imported cars, many Cubans have had to ingeniously make do with American cars dating from the 1950s and early 1960s.

Replacement parts are scarce but clever mechanics have found ways to keep them running. Hence a trip to Cuba is much like watching a classic car rally, except that these classic cars are in full use as taxis and private vehicles.

The time warp continues in the aging houses and mansions you encounter on a guided Cuba tour in Old Havana , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and probably the best preserved city center in the Caribbean . Many have Spanish-style balconies, arcades, wrought-iron gates and internal courtyards. Some appear to be on life support but remain standing, much as the classic cars keep running.

Visiting Cuba Today

Cuba is experiencing a surge in interest due to the recent restoration of diplomatic relations between the US and Cuban governments. This beautiful and elusive country is now more accessible to one of its closest neighbors and American travelers are itching to visit.

There are still some travel restrictions in place for US citizens however. As relaxing as it might sound, it's still technically illegal for Americans to travel to Cuba to laze on the beach, mojito in hand.

However, the OFAC (Office of Foreign Asset Control) does permit American travel to Cuba, provided it fits within 1 of 12 general categories. One of the most popular of these is 'educational activities' and tour operators have long led 'people to people' tours, which include activities like visiting with local musicians, farmers, and artisans. This is how the majority of American citizens have legally traveled to Cuba for the past few years.

More recently, travel regulations were further relaxed, giving tour operators even more flexibility with the types of itineraries they run in Cuba. This means virtually any tour in Cuba is legal for American travelers, but always check direct with the tour operator first.

Options for Cuba travel include primarily  guided tours in Cuba . T aking a tour is one of the best ways to have an authentic experience in this rich and diverse country. Taking a tour doesn't mean being stuck in a large group on a coach bus either. Some companies limit their groups to 10-15 like-minded travelers to provide an intimate, accessible experience.

Why Consider a Tour In Cuba?

Although traveling to Cuba independently is now possible, it’s still wise to consider a tour . Due to the increased demand, hotel rooms in popular cities like Havana and Trinidad are hard to come by. This means that unless you plan many months in advance, you might be relegated to a less than desirable hotel that isn’t centrally located. Cuba tour operators , on the other hand, purchase rooms in bulk up to a year in advance, so you are guaranteed a room in some of the country’s most famous and beautiful accommodations.

The infrastructure in Cuba, specifically the road and transportation network, are still quite basic and developing. It can be hard to get around from city to city and all of the signs are in Spanish. Speaking of language barriers, it’s a challenge to find many English speakers outside of hotels and major tourist attractions.

On a tour, you’ll hit the major tourist sites, such as El Floridita (where Hemingway himself used to drink) but you’ll also have a chance to meet local artists and business people - all who can offer unique glimpses into the current affairs of this fascinating country. Tour guides can often show you a side of Cuba that you’d otherwise miss if traveling independently.

Must See Cuban Cities

Tours in Cuba often begin in Havana , with the most direct flights from Miami and other US cities. However, it is recommended to explore beyond the famous capital city, venturing farther afield to places like Vinales Valley, Trinidad, and Santa Clara. These ‘secondary’ cities have less tourists, but offer unique cultural and natural experiences that are not to be missed.

The small city of Vinales , and the surrounding UNESCO World Heritage Site Vinales Valley, lies a few hours to the west of Havana.  If Havana is like stepping back to the 1950’s, it can be said that visiting Vinales harkens back even further to the 19th century.

This largely agricultural area, where crops such as coffee and tobacco are still grown following centuries old traditions, is an outdoor-lover’s paradise. The lush landscape is dotted with karsts which attract climbers and hikers alike. The region is also known for its music and arts scene, much like other parts of Cuba. See best Cuba travel packages to Vinales  »

Trinidad & Topes de Collantes

The beautiful cobblestoned-street city of Trinidad lies in the southern part of the island, about a 6 hours drive on Cuba’s notoriously choppy roads. Yet another UNESCO World Heritage site, Trinidad has been beautifully preserved to its colonial charms. Artist galleries and restaurants with live music line the narrow cobblestone streets. Walking through an open door might reveal a couple of men playing dominos on a plastic table or a traditional pig roast in process.

Visit the Plaza Major to experience an open air colonial architecture museum and then check out live music next to the cathedral in the same location. Although accommodation is hard to come by, many Cuba tours make stops in Trinidad to take in its authenticity.

Trinidad also acts as a great jumping off point for Cuba adventures into Topes de Collantes , one of Cuba’s many national parks. Located about 12 miles from the city, Topes de Collantes lies in a mountainous region home to a plethora of flora and fauna, many endemic to Cuba.

Guided hikes are available around the park and are mostly mellow over well blazed trails. There are opportunities to hike with a local naturalist, who can point out local bird varieties. Other hikes end at picturesque waterfalls where a cool swim is inviting in the tropical heat. Topes de Collantes is most popular with local Cubans on vacation, although many tourists, especially Europeans, are starting to discover its charms.

Santa Clara

Santa Clara is located is close proximity to Havana, due east about 3 hours. It’s probably most famous for being the place where revolutionary fighter Che Guevara is buried, and thousands of tourists flock here to see his final resting place. This historic city is also where the final battle of the Cuban Revolution took place in 1958.

Two columns of revolutionary fighters attacked the city, one led by Che. After intense fighting, the city was captured, and hours later, General Batista, then leader of Cuba, left the country. Santa Clara is a tour highlight for history buffs and a common stopping point on the drive from Havana to Trinidad.

Music & Art in Cuba

There’s something about being in Cuba that brings out the dancer even in those who travel with two left feet. It’s no mystery: the music -- salsa, jazz, rumba, merengue, and other genres, often combined into a unique Afro-Cuban sound -- is both ubiquitous and irresistible. You’ll hear it in clubs, bars, restaurants, bodegas, or just emanating from the nearest homes.

In Havana, there is live music on many street corners, including outside most of the major hotels. If you desire something more formal and organized, the famous Cuban band The Buena Vista Social Club still performs most nights in a bar in Old Havana. While many of the original founders of the group have passed or are no longer playing, a few still remain.

Many tours include a night out to hear these legends of Cuban jazz and it’s well worth the relatively expensive cover charge. Many times, the musicians will hang around after the set and if your Spanish is decent, striking up a conversation could be one of the highlights of your trip.

Other opportunities to see live music include the rooftop bar of the Hotel Inglaterra, located near Parque Central, where a salsa or rumba ensemble plays most nights. There are also a number of dance clubs around Havana, including Casa de la Musica de Miramar, El Turquino, and Cabaret Parisien, which hosts an elaborate cabaret show, complete with flowered dancers.

Believe it or not, some of the most authentic music in Cuba can be heard while sitting outside having dinner at a paladares, or local restaurant, in Old Havana. Small groups of musicians will approach your table and give you a private concert, of course in exchange for a few pesos.

Many famous artists, such as Wifredo Lam, have come out of Cuba, however, many are still relatively unknown due to the isolation of the country for so many years. For authentic local Cuban art, a visit to the El Taller Experimental de Grafica is a must. This artist workshop, founded in 1962 with the support of infamous revolutionary Che Guevara, is still a thriving studio today. Inside, artists of all ages delicately create traditional prints using decades old techniques. Prints are for sale and you can discuss the pieces of art direct with the artist, which is a special experience.

Other top art galleries include Galeria Victor Manuel, Galeria Habana, and Fototeca de Cuba, which houses the country’s largest collection of photographs. Although many tours will only include a stop at the Museo de Nacional, most itineraries offer ample free time to explore these artistic havens on your own.

Art is also central to Cuban life, from Havana’s excellent National Museum of Fine Arts to street corner painters and much in between.

The Hemingway Legacy

You might be surprised to learn that American author Ernest Hemingway -- a longtime resident of Havana, where he wrote "The Old Man and the Sea" and "A Moveable Feast" among other works -- is still venerated in Cuba. His finca, where he lived just outside Havana throughout the 1940s and ‘50s, is maintained as a museum,  and a popular stop on most tour itineraries .

Everything is kept the way he left it, except that a new set of cats (many of which have six toes, the progeny of Hemingway’s own fleet of stray cats), now curl up on his desk for naps.  One of the most intimate glimpses into Hemingway’s sometimes lonely existence is apparent by the writing on the bathroom wall of his home. This is where he recorded his daily weight, in pencil. At some point in history, the writing was covered up, only to be discovered by museum curators years later while conducting restoration around the home.

You can also visit many of his old haunts around Havana such as El Floridita, said to be the birthplace of the daiquiri (one of Hemingway’s favorite libations) and La Bodeguita del Medio, which serves as a virtual Hemingway memorial (though still a working bar, with plenty of atmosphere). Both places can get very crowded with tourists and there are better drinks in town. However, it can be worth the stop for any literary buffs who’d like to sit side by side with Hemingway’s statue at the bar.

Another Hemingway haunt worth a visit is La Terraza Restaurant, located in the small fishing village of Cojimar, about 20 minutes from Havana. This is the very place depicted in his novel ‘Old Man and the Sea’ and the walls are adorned with black and white photos of the author himself, including many of him dining at La Terraza. It’s no surprise that Hemingway chose this seaside gem as a top spot in Cuba.

Best Beaches in Cuba

While Americans can’t go to Cuba just for a beach vacation yet, (if that's what you're after, consider the best travel packages to Costa Rica ) other nationalities can -- and if you’re in a position to visit one of the island’s 300-some sandy beaches, you may find yourself mostly alone despite the glorious settings.

Among Cuba’s finest beaches are the white-sand Playa Ancon (on the southern, Caribbean side of the island) and 12-mile-long, white-sand Varadero Beach, the best known beach in the country. Both offer crystal clear waters for swimming or snorkeling. Be warned though that if you are looking for seclusion, you won’t find it at Playa Ancon or Playa Varadero. Both are well-trodden with tourists and feature many all inclusive resorts.

Other top beaches include Playa Los Flamencos, located within Cayo Coco off Cuba’s north shore. There are three main beaches in this idyllic location, although Los Flamencos offers the most privacy and tranquility.

Playa Pilar was the choice beach of Ernest Hemingway himself. He spent so much time here that the beach was named after his yacht, the Pilar. This bit of sand on the western tip of Cayo Guillermo is probably one of the least popular beaches in the region, for now.

Playa Los Pinos is perhaps the most deserted beach in all of Cuba. Getting here requires an off-road ride that is not accessible by public transport. But for the intrepid beach goers who make the trip, the reward is a long white sand beach where your only companions might be a band of wild horses.

Playa Esmeralda is a good spot for those wanting a bit of understated luxury. This smaller beach features two luxury hotels that are tastefully situated as not to be an eyesore on the pristine beach environment. If you’re looking to relax and recharge for a few days, in style, this might be the place for you.

Food in Cuba

Cuban food is often thought of as beans and rice, which are indeed served at many meals and can be delicious, but there’s much more to it than that. The cuisine has Spanish, French, African, Chinese, Portuguese, and Arabic influences, along with Caribbean favorites such as fried plantains, similar to but different from bananas.

Stews and many other dishes use a base of sofrito (onion, green pepper, garlic, oregano) for flavoring; more contemporary cuisine includes Spanish-style tapas. Coffee is on the strong side and Cuban sandwiches -- ham, pork, pickle, cheese, and mustard on bread -- are among the world’s best. Besides regular restaurants, a number of private homes, called paladares,  now serve as eateries offering authentic local cuisine.

This is great news for visitors as you not only get a fresh, delicious meal, but also the opportunity to catch a glimpse of local, everyday life. Tour companies have caught on and many now include at least one meal at some of the best paladares in Havana such as Doña Eutimia and Le Chansonnier. Just don’t expect a quick meal - Cubans take their time and you should to. Besides, what can beat sitting outside on a warm Havana night, sipping a mojito and eating freshly caught prawns tossed in garlic and pepper while waiting for your main dish of ropa vieja?

Vegetarians and pescatarians should have no trouble finding something to eat, although the former may need to get used to a steady diet of rice, beans, and salad for a few days. Seafood lovers, however, will found a bounty of diverse and fresh options from the surrounding waters.

Regardless of your diet or culinary preferences, you are sure to find something tasty and flavorful in Cuba as long as you are willing to be patient and explore some of the hidden gems in Havana and beyond.

Ultimately, the Cuban people themselves are the stars of any visit to the island. And the best way to meet them is by organized tour, featuring people-to-people encounters.

Before you go

Visas are required for all American citizens traveling to Cuba. Most tour operators usually include this fee in the price of the trip, or have a separate visa fee that is paid once your trip is confirmed. Either way, it’s a good idea to book a Cuba trip with a tour company who will handle the visa logistics for you. UK citizens also must obtain a tourist card before traveling to Cuba.

Medical care in Cuba is quite good, with more doctors per capita than many other countries. However, you should always travel with insurance and many tour operators can recommend a plan to cover you while on your trip. Only routine vaccinations are required for Cuba, however, the CDC does recommend both Typhoid and Hepatitis A vaccinations for some travelers.

Cuba is generally very safe compared to other Central and South American countries. Police are everywhere, and especially apparent in high tourist locations. However, as when traveling in any foreign country, use common street sense and pay attention to your surroundings. This is especially true in Havana, Trinidad and other large cities. Crimes of opportunity, such as pick-pocketing, are not unheard of, but a little vigilance goes a long way, and traveling in a group can help deter any potential trouble.

Itinerary Summary

Map 20 Day Complete Tour

Tour Description

Our 20 day  Complete Cuba  tour is a combination of our  15 day Original Cuba tour  package and our  6 day Western Cuba tour  package. We think this is the best tour to travel the entire length of the island to experience Cuba's fascinating  diversity . It takes you to many of  Cuba's natural and historic highlights , however the  emphasis of the tour is on contact with the Cuban people and their culture .

We also give you plenty of time to do your own adventuring in Cuba. Nevertheless, your  local tour guide  is available everyday to recommend places to explore and to help you arrange excursions and day trips.

Tour Summary

Itinerary details, day 1 - havana arrival day.

You are  free to arrive in  Havana  at whatever time you can today . We have set aside this first day for this purpose, so you won't miss out on anything, even if you arrive late in the evening. Your  included  airport arrival transfer  will be provided . This will be either a government taxi or a private car, and will take you directly from the Havana airport to your guesthouse for the first night in Havana.

Your  tour guide  will leave a note  for you in the guesthouse with some information for you to get settled and details of any tour group meeting times. The first of these will be a get together for dinner on the first night for those tour group members that have arrived in time.

If you do happen to arrive earlier in the day, you may have time to go and explore some of  Havana . At some stage during the tour, your tour guide will include a walking tour of  Old Havana . After confirming your tour booking with us, we will also send you a set of maps for each city you will visit in Cuba. This is like a mini guide book that we update every year - so it is usually more up-to-date than a typical guide book. We do recommend the guide books for Cuba however, especially for the background historical and cultural information sections.

Two classic American 50’s cars in front of the Gran Teatro in Havana

Day 2 - Cienfuegos via Bay of Pigs

On our way to Cienfuegos, we drive along the beautiful coastline of the Bay of Pigs . This is where the landing of a counter-revolutionary exile militia occurred in 1961. The ensuing battle with the Cuban Revolutionary forces resulted in the first defeat of a U.S backed take-over in Latin America. Your guide will explain in more detail the dramatic events. If the conditions are favourable, we can stop for a swim at a beautiful spot on the bay that is ideal for snorkelling. Snorkelling masks are available at a small cost.

Cienfuegos appeal lies partly in the European flavour of its colonial hub, with a wide Parisian-style boulevard and elegant colonnades, and there is an ambience to inspire Cuba’s most celebrated Son singer to write the words “Cienfuegos is the city I like best” . You'll have time to take in the ambience with a pleasant stroll along the boulevard and to the main square.

Cienfuegos

Day 3 - Camaguey via Santa Clara

Before reaching Camaguey we first drop in on the historic inland city of Santa Clara . It's here that we encounter a huge statue of Ernesto Ché Guevara . We take time to visit the museum that is directly under the statue, and which tells the story of Ché's fascinating life. There is also a mausoleum with an eternal flame that commemorates his death and that of the revolutionaries who were with him in Bolivia.

Cuba's third largest city lies about halfway between Havana and Santiago de Cuba . Camaguey was designed in the 17th century to disorientate potential invaders such as pirates and plunderers, so the street layout is a jumble of narrow alleys where no two streets are parallel. There are large parks, various private art galleries, and a thriving market garden, and one will enjoy strolling through this city. This is also a university town and has a rich cultural tradition, and like just about everywhere in Cuba, there is plenty of night time entertainment to be had.

Camaguey is a proud and cultural city, and has some of the best schools and institutions in Cuba.

Santa Clara Che

Day 4 - Holguin

Before we set off for Holguin we will start the morning with a guided visit to the ballet school in Camaguey. We then head to the province of Holguin - the third largest province in Cuba. While Holguin is popular mostly as a beach resort destination, it is also known for its rich architectural structures that date back to the 19th century, among many other historical places in the city which we will see on our walking tour. The rest of the day is free to wander this interesting city and visit some of the many historical sites and museums, take a cultural trip to learn more about the original inhabitants of the island, or visit some of the beautiful parks and green spaces or walk to the Loma de la Cruz (the hill of the cross) well worth a visit with spectacular views. Holguin has a number of places related to a Cuban hero called Calixto Garcia . There are numerous great venues for music and to enjoy the nightlife, and many good places to eat.

Day 5,6 - Baracoa

When Christopher Columbus first encountered Cuba it was here, and he duly noted in his log-book that this was the most beautiful land that human eyes could set upon . You will understand what he meant when you see the beaches and verdant mountain landscape that surround Baracoa . Situated on a beautiful bay with the mountains of the Sierra del Purial in the background, Baracoa was the first settlement founded by the Spanish in Cuba, and was only accessible by sea until the end of the 1960s. There are numerous options for outdoor activities in the nearby mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and beaches . Baracoa is also known for its variety of fresh seafood, and chocolate made from local cacao plantations.

  • Lunch will be included on Day 5.

House on the Duaba river, Baracoa

Day 7, 8 - Santiago de Cuba

A spectacular drive through lush mountains of eastern Cuba, then along a rugged and beautiful section of coast, and later past the region’s most controversial leasehold of Guantanamo Bay , brings us to what is known as the “cradle of Cuba's Revolution” . Santiago is home to much of Cuba’s famed music , like the Son. There are also museums, colonial churches and buildings of more recent historical importance, such as the Moncada Barracks, which are well worth exploring.

Santiago de Cuba has a very vibrant traditional music scene , and it's here that we include what we call a Noche Santiaguera . It's an interactive night of music and dance where we invite some local Santiago friends of ours to come with us to a local traditional music venue, and they will invite you to join them on the dance floor to learn some dance moves. For those that are willing, you'll have the chance to get up on stage and play an instrument with the local Cuban band. Culturally, Santiago has a different feel to the rest of Cuba , undoubtedly coming from the mix of French speaking slaves from Haiti and its proximity to Jamaica.

Santiago de Cuba

Day 9 - Bayamo vía Sanctuary of El Cobre

Today we head to Bayamo from Santiago de Cuba, via  the Sanctuary of El Cobre . El Cobre is a small town with a significant statue to Cimmaron, commemorating the copper mine slave uprising in the 17th century.  It is also the most important place of worship in Cuba and the home of the patron Saint of Cuba - Our Lady of Charity. This is a fascinating stop and insight into Cuba culture, religion and customs.

After we leave El Cobre we continue onto Bayamo , a small quiet town, not what you would expect for the capital of this province. The people in Bayamo are very laid back and it is a pleasant contrast to the hustle and bustle of vibrant Santiago de Cuba. Bayamo is the second Spanish city founded in Cuba (1513) as was named Villa de San Salvador de Bayamo”. During the 17th and 18th century, the idea of Cuban Independence began here with Cespedes who freed his slave and formed a small army, starting the War of Independence against Spain . Rather than surrender, the rebels famously held Bayamo for three days before burning it to the ground. There is an interesting wax museum we will visit during our walking tour.

Bayamo sits at the foot of the Sierra Maestra ,  where you can do an optional hike into the mountains to visit Fidel’s hideout & rebel radio encampment as it was during the 1950’s. If you prefer not to visit the Sierra Maestra you can relax in Santo Domingo from where the hike begins. Santo Domingo is located at the entrance to the Pico Turquino National Park and on the banks of the Yara river where you can take a swim in the cool water. There is one hotel here in Santo Domingo where you can sit and enjoy the fresh, crisp mountain air overlooking the river. Read more about this Sierra Maestra excursion here .

Bayamo

Day 10,11,12 - Trinidad

Trinidad is home to numerous churches and many beautiful colonial buildings. We are near the lovely Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of Sugarmills) and Playa Ancón, where you can enjoy long stretches of unspoiled, white sand beaches . Scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming in waterfalls and horse-riding are other optional activities.

The nightlife in Trinidad is probably the most accessible and intense in all of Cuba, with numerous live music venues and many dance performances everyday of the week, all amongst the enchanting setting of old colonial buildings and the cobblestone streets.

  • Dinner will be included on Day 12.

Colonial plaza in Trinidad Cuba

Day 13,14, 15 - Havana

We arrive late in the afternoon of Day 13, so you have 3 nights and 2 whole days to experience the Caribbean's largest and most famous city in this middle part of the tour. Your tour guide will provide an introduction with the included walking tour of the Old town scheduled for the morning of Day 14. You always have the option to skip this and explore on your own. We also offer a range of other day tours in Havana that you can add to your package.

The Caribbean's largest and most exciting urban concentration, Havana is one of the oldest cities in the Western Hemisphere, and was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. Options are to take the included walking tour of the Old town with the guide or to find your own adventure.

This concludes the first section of your tour . On Day 15 you may lose some of your travelling companions and possibly welcome some others to the group who are only doing the last section of this tour. It's also possible that you will have a change of tour guide, however we do always try to schedule things so that the same guide takes you for the entire 20 days.

Street performers on stilts in Old Havana

Day 16 - Soroa via Jaimanitas & Las Terrazas

Heading west of Havana in private transport, we stop in a couple of Havana neighbourhoods to see some community art projects. The first one is an alley called the  Callejon de Hammel . This is where local artist  Salvador Gonzáles Escalona  has done some colourful decorations of the street with a distinctive African flavour. In fact, many of the works are dedications to specific Afro-Cuban religious demi-gods.

Next we visit a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Havana called  Jaimanitas . It is here that  Jose Fuster  has made a very impressive project called  Fusterlandia  in which works are made in mosaic ceramics. It extends from his own residence to surrounding houses and streets. Even the local medical clinic has been targeted by his creative efforts.

Next stop is a mountainous area called  Las Terrazas . The town itself was built as part of an environmental project in the early days of the Revolution. You'll have time for a walk around the town and to meet some of the locals. Apart from its environmental characteristics, Las Terrazas is also known as for its art, and there are a few woodwork, painting and pottery studios, that are open to the public.

We eventually arrive to the mountain resort town of Soroa where we stay in the homes of the local humble residents. There are quite a few attractions around this heavily forested area including a short trek to a waterfall, a steep walk to a lookout, and an orchid garden with about 200 different types of orchids, more than half of which are endemic to Cuba. Today there won’t be time for activities, but you may be able to do them tomorrow morning before departing to Viñales.

Colorful buildings in the Callejon de Hamel in Havana

Day 17 - Viñales

Before reaching the town of Vinales  we can stop at a lookout  which has some great views of the Vinales valley. Parts of this stunning area are listed with UNESCO for the value of their rural scenery and heritage.

In the afternoon we have time to take you  to the home of a local tobacco farmer , who will show you his life and how he rolls his own cigars.

A Cuban Adventures tour group at the organic farm in Vinales, Cuba

Day 18 - Viñales

Today you have  a full day with no included activities . This is you  opportunity  to do as you please, and there are plenty of options available that your guide can arrange for you. Our travellers in the past have highly recommended the  walk through parts of the valley with a guide  that is local to the Vinales area. There are also caving, horse riding, and biking excursions available.

Another option is to do some  voluntary work  on a  local organic farm  (and staying for dinner!), or heading to one of the beautiful beaches nearby - Cayo Levisa or Cayo Jutias.

There are a couple of hotels on the outskirts of the town with some swimming pools you can use for a small fee - a good option if you just want to relax and enjoy the views while drinking a cocktail or two.

The  nightlife in Vinales is very friendly and active , and the locals are always enthusiastically involved. There is live music nightly and usually a dance performance or two. But the main emphasis is on participation and the locals are not shy in asking visitors to share a dance. In fact, many travellers will tell you that Vinales is one of the best places in Cuba to interact with the locals.

A farm house in the Vinales valley in Cuba

Day 19 - Havana

We return to  Havana  to celebrate  the last night of the tour , and for some, their last night in Cuba. With recent changes to the laws in Cuba, and legal opportunities for Cubans to open their own businesses, there are many more  good options for restaurants, bars, and night spots . Your tour guide will no doubt suggest a few for a group celebration.

The Cathedral Square in Old Havana

Day 20 - Depart Havana

Today is the  departure day of the tour , and you are free to depart at anytime. Don't hesitate to ask your guide for help if you want to organise a few extra days in Havana at the end of your tour.

20 things to know before visiting Cuba

Be ready for your visit to Cuba with these top tips on what to expect © Westend61 / Getty Images

To a first-time traveler, Cuba can seem like a confusing jigsaw puzzle, particularly if you’re breaking free of the resorts and traveling around on your own.

The Spanish spoken here is fast and hard to decipher, many streets have two different names and the country’s fickle and highly complicated monetary situation could fill its own guidebook.

To help you be prepared, here is everything you need to know before planning a trip to Cuba.

1. Double-check your insurance

You are required to have medical insurance to visit Cuba and will need to bring digital or printed proof of your policy. Random checks are made at the airport. If you arrive without insurance, you’ll be asked to buy a Cuban policy at the airport for US$30.

2. Fill out your passenger information in advance

Cuba uses an online form called  D’Viajeros  to gather traveler information, including immigration and health data, in advance of travel. Fill out the form digitally up to 72 hours before your arrival in Cuba.

Friends sit on a coastal wall with their legs dangling over the sea and pose for a selfie

3. Every visitor needs a tourist card

To enter Cuba, all visitors need to present a completed tourist card . It’s usually available through your airline (ask when booking) and included in the price of your ticket.

If not, you can purchase one through a Cuban travel agency. Costs range from US$50 to US$85. Citizens of 20 African and Asian countries require a formal visa to enter Cuba. Check the situation for your country before booking.

4. Cash and currency: it’s complicated!

Money in Cuba is confusing, even to Cubans . Since the country abolished convertibles (CUC) in January 2021 and took the US dollar out of circulation in June 2021, there has been massive inflation and the emergence of a rampant black market. The knock-on effect is a bewildering dual economy.

The official currency of Cuba is the Cuban peso (CUP), but foreign currencies are also widely accepted, especially by private businesses who need hard cash to buy non-rationed goods in MLC (freely convertible currency) shops.

State-run enterprises and banks use official exchange rates. However, the prices of the superior services offered by private businesses generally reflect black market exchange rates.

Hence a main dish in a private restaurant in Havana will cost around CUP$500 (US$21). That’s an expensive meal if you’re paying in pesos bought from a Cuban bank.

However, most private restaurants will also accept payment in euros using a more favorable exchange rate. Some will even have a separate menu with prices printed in euros.

When buying something from a private business – be it a restaurant, casa particular (private accommodation) or taxi service – it’s usually best to pay in a foreign currency. Always ask upfront what currencies they accept and what exchange rate they use for their published peso prices.

Euros is the most interchangeable currency and the one preferred by Cubans. You can also use and exchange Canadian dollars and pound sterling.

US dollars still circulate on the black market, but we don’t recommend bringing them. The best bet, when you arrive, is to keep most of your money in a foreign currency and only change small amounts into pesos for incidentals like museum entry, concert tickets and tips.

5. MLC is a currency with no cash form

The Moneda Libremente Convertible (MLC) is a currency approved by the Cuban government in 2020 that can be used in certain shops to buy higher-end goods.

The currency doesn’t exist as cash and its value is pegged with the US dollar. It’s used mainly by Cubans with special magnetic cards.

Tourists needn’t worry too much about MLC$, although prices will sometimes be displayed in the currency in state-run enterprises such as cigar shops or airport souvenir stores where you can pay with a non-US credit card.

6. Only some credit cards will work

Credit cards are increasingly popular in Cuba and in many state-run businesses are the preferred (and sometimes only) method of payment.

Despite promises made in the Obama era, credit cards linked to US banks are not accepted. Private businesses almost never have credit card machines, meaning your only option is cash.

7. Pack your favorite casual clothes – and men need a shirt

Dress in Cuba is casual, so you can leave your high heels and tux behind. The only real dress code is in cinemas, theaters and nightclubs, where male patrons are required to wear long trousers and shirts with sleeves or half-sleeves.

8. Cuban Spanish is fast and often informal

If you speak Spanish, you’ll find that Cubans mostly use the informal tú form of address, rather than usted . In the plural, ustedes is used over vosotros .

If you don’t know someone, it’s best to address them as señor or señora , though you’ll hear Cubans use all kinds of substitutes such as socio , hermano , papa , chica/o  and asere .

9. Cuban cities are where the streets have two names

In most Cuban cities, the streets have two names: a contemporary one that is noted on maps and marked on street signs, and a pre-revolutionary one that is still used widely by the locals.

This can become confusing, especially when locals, unaware of the new street names, start giving out directions or addresses using the colloquial nomenclature. Always double-check addresses and, if possible, get two potential names for the street you’re looking for.

10. Understand the local art of queueing

Cubans have to endure a lot of long waits in boring queues, so they’ve invented a way of doing it that doesn’t involve standing in line. In a Cuban queue, you simply roll up at the bakery/clinic/visa office and yell out to the assembled masses, "Quien es último?" (Who’s last?).

Hopefully, someone in a 400m vicinity will answer your polite entreaty with the word, "yo" (me). That person is your yardstick. As long as they’re still around, feel free to go for a walk, sit in the lotus position or buy ice cream. When they get called up, be on your toes, you’re next!

11. Ask questions more than once

Thanks to heavy bureaucracy, answers to simple requests aren’t always straightforward – or even correct. Probe politely and ask at least five different people before you make important decisions.

12. Bring something to keep you warm on a cold bus journey

Cuba has a countrywide state-run bus service called  Víazul that connects all of the main cities and some of the smaller towns. Prices are charged in MLC$ (the same rate as the US$) and tickets must be paid for with a credit card either in person or online.

A second service called Conectando, run by Cubanacán, also puts on buses in peak season along some of the more popular routes. Bring a sweater/jacket for long bus rides – the air-conditioning is akin to a chilly day in Vancouver.

13. Cuba is considered a safe place to travel

Cuba is one of the safest countries in the Americas in terms of violent crime. Pick-pocketing is more common but not rampant, and is mostly avoidable if you follow a few basic precautions: Wear a money belt, use safe boxes in hotel rooms and don’t flash your cash in public.

14. Solo female travelers report receiving unwanted attention

Solo female travelers report experiencing a good deal of unwanted attention, but it didn't necessarily spoil their enjoyment of traveling in Cuba.

There is a fine line between being open and friendly and harassment, and some men can cross that line by being overly familiar or asking too many personal questions. Learn some key phrases in Spanish that make it clear when you're not interested.

15. Beware of forgeries

Never change money with unlicensed traders on the streets. You run the risk of receiving estafas (forged notes).

16. Bring your own medicines

On one level, Cuba has a good health system (it invented and quickly distributed three COVID-19 vaccines); on the other, it is perennially short of pharmaceuticals.

Bring all the prescription medications you think you’ll need, as well others you might like ibuprofen or paracetamol. If you’d like to donate some medicines to the people of Cuba, it is currently possible to bring in 10kg of medical supplies tax-free (pack them in a separate bag).

Portrait of an Afro-Cuban woman smoking cigar and smiling in Havana, Cuba

17. Avoid dodgy cigars

Cuba has its share of jineteros (touts) spinning elaborate stories about super-cheap, high-quality cigars procured by their brother/mother/cousin from the factory. Don’t believe them. Instead, buy your cigars in state-run shops such as the Casa del Habano chain. Cigars sold on the street are invariably factory cast-offs and not genuine.

18. Driving is not as easy as you think

With light traffic on the road, driving might seem like an easy proposition, but with elevated rental prices and cars often in short supply, it’s not always so.

Add in sporadic signposting, potholed roads and a wide array of hazards – goats, horses, bicycles, kids and slow-moving, fume-belching trucks – and you might want to consider getting the bus or, at least, employing the services of a chauffeur.

19. Bring toilet paper and sanitary products

The pandemic made the provision of antiseptic hand lotion more common, but the same can’t be said of toilet paper. Carry your own roll and/or gravitate to four- or five-star hotels when you’re caught short in the city.

Re-usable pads and silicon cups, or disposable pads and tampons are must-pack items if you're expecting your period while you're in Cuba. These are in high demand here.

20. Don’t drink the water

The water won’t kill you, but it might give you a little queasiness or an upset stomach. Fortunately, bottled water is abundant and cheap. An even better idea is to bring your own filter bottle or water purification tablets.

The Ultimate Cuba Travel Guide 2024

buy tour cuba

These days it is relatively easy for Americans to obtain a Cuba travel guide and venture to this once-forbidden Caribbean island. For most, it's no more difficult than planning a trip to any other foreign country. In fact, the process may be easier now for Cuba than for some countries that require a visa. Here's the step-by-step process you should follow to plan a fun, safe, and legal trip.

Once you give the article a read feel free to contact us  with any questions you still have about planning an incredible Cuban excursion.

Want to explore Cuba differently?  Have a local plan your trip .

Table of Contents

Prepare an itinerary and license, purchase a plane ticket, book a place to stay, buy a cuban tourist card, purchase health insurance.

  • Exchange money

Places you'll need your passport and/or tourist visa card

Flying home: customs.

Here's the process you should follow to plan yourself a fun, safe, and legal trip:

Unfortunately, Americans can't travel to Cuba just for fun quite yet. You need to declare your reason for travel in the form of a general license ( a self-reporting license that you can learn more about here )  and be able to back that up with a Cuba travel guide or plan.

As part of the license, you will need to prepare a detailed itinerary - your Cuba travel guide - showing what you plan to do on your trip and how it fulfills the terms of the license you selected. For example, if you are reporting your trip under Support for the Cuban People you will need to document interactions with locals and contributions to the local economy. You could do this by booking accommodations at a Casa Particular , signing up to take language classes from a local, visiting museums, and volunteering for a local organization, just to name a few options.

Rumor has it that you have to charter a flight or book through a travel agency in order to travel to Cuba. This simply isn't true. You can book a ticket yourself, no problem. Ten commercial airlines offer flights from the U.S. to Cuba now. Get all the details in our post all about plane tickets . (And just keep in mind that as of 2019, Americans can only fly into Havana .)

Whether you choose to stay at a Casa Particular or at a hotel, you'll want to book at least your first night in advance. You can book on the fly if you like to stay at [...]. They are everywhere and you can generally find last-minute rooms. On the other hand, if you're a hotel person, know that hotels are scarce in many places and many are off-limits to Americans who can't stay in  hotels affiliated with GAESA , the Cuban military organization. If you're set on a hotel, book in advance, confirm your room a few days beforehand, and be prepared to stick to your Cuba travel guide or itinerary.

casa particulares ultimate cuba travel guide

Now that you're on your way, there are a few more formalities to address. The Cuban Tourist Card is similar to a and is required by the Cuban government. The easiest way to get your Cuban Tourist Card is online in advance through sites like Online Tourist Card . Y ou can also purchase your Tourist Card from your airline, but pricing and purchase location vary.  Plus, buying your Tourist Card ahead of time means not waiting until the last minute to secure your necessary documentation. Just d on't lose it—you'll need it to get home!

Health insurance is mandatory. You won't be allowed through customs unless you purchase Cuban health insurance. It only costs about $4 per day and if you're flying an American airline from the US, it's included in your ticket. This small investment is required because American health insurance cannot be used in Cuba due to the embargo. If you happen to be flying through a third country and you are an American, there will be a table selling health insurance just before you enter the queue for immigration. It's legit, and if you don't have Cuban health insurance the immigration officers will kindly point you to the table to purchase before proceeding.

Exchange money

Withdraw plenty of cash before you leave the United States because your credit card won't work once you get to Cuba. Once you're in Cuba, exchange American dollars for Cuban Pesos (CUP).

Keep your passport and tourist visa card with you throughout your trip to Cuba. You'll need both to get home.

You'll need your passport when checking into casa particulares . Your host will photocopy your passport or take down essential information from it. This will be given to the local immigration office. It's standard practice and nothing at all to worry about.

Other than that, you'll only need these items and your Cuba travel guide at customs, if you choose to rent a car , or in other rare circumstances.

This is the spot where people get a little bit antsy, but there's absolutely no reason to be nervous.

At Cuban customs , you'll need your tourist visa card and ticket, customs will stamp both. So don't lose the tourist visa card you received when you entered the country! Unless that is, you never want to leave.

man smoking Cuba black and white

At US customs, fill out the customs declaration form just like you would when arriving home from any other foreign country. When you speak to the customs officials, just be honest. Your trip to Cuba has already been noted so don't deny it, that will just make you look suspicious. If an official asks where you've been, tell them where you went to Cuba and which general license category you traveled under. In 95% of cases, that'll be that, no further questions. If you are asked more questions, just keep answering honestly. Have your Cuba travel guide ready just in case customs wishes to review it. It is very rare, but don't be alarmed if your bags are searched since there are limitations on what you can bring back from Cuba . As long as you've declared what you purchased and didn't exceed purchase limits on cigars and alcohol, you'll be fine.

Most importantly, have a great time on your trip to Cuba !

Best Cuban Cigars

The Ultimate Cuban Cigar Guide [Cigars in Cuba]

There are two things that Cuba is known for worldwide, one is rum, and the other cigars.  And Cuban cigars are known around the world for their taste and quality.  The economics of Cuban cigars has been integral to the history and development of Cuba and the development of the country.  There seriously is something special about them.  Tobacco and Cuba go a long way back, and the growth and development of the tobacco industry are an important part of Cuba’s history.  And it’s the mystique of Cuban cigars and how they developed that led to the status that they hold in the world.  Our Cuban Cigar Guide explains the beginnings, the background, and the best ways that you can experience Cuban cigars today.  Come on in!

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN COMPENSATED AND AFFILIATE LINKS. MORE INFORMATION IN  OUR DISCLAIMER

#1 CUBAN CIGAR EXPERIENCE

Visit a Cigar Factory

This is the top Cuban Cigar experience in Cuba. Learn to make Cigars in Cuba from the history, a cigar making workshop, and learn to make your own cigars in Havana.

Cuban Cigars and Cuban Culture

Cuba is jam-packed and full of culture, history, and experiences.  Yet there’s nothing that characterizes Cuba’s culture more than the Cuban Cigar.  And I don’t smoke!  But I have smoked a cigar in Cuba.  Well a little bit of one, just to see what it was like.  And to understand why cigars are so intrinsically linked with Cuba we need to take a bit of a dive into history.  If you’re interested in Cuban history, then you should take a look at my guide to Cuban cocktails, which details some interesting Cuban history through cocktails too!

But I digress.  Let’s get back to Cigars.  If you just want to skip to the chase and go on a Cuban Cigar Tour, then here are my top 3 recommendations for tours that focus on cigars.  And, of course, a day trip to the Vinales Valley is a surefire winner for seeing tobacco plantations and cigars being made.

The Top 3 Cuban Cigar Tours & Workshops in Cuba

  •   Take a Cuban Cigar workshop in Havana – this early evening workshop provides you, while you have a drink in hand with all the details of how Cuban cigars are made.  You’ll learn the history of Cuban cigars and then make your own.  Reserve a place now.
  • Combine Cuban Rum and Cuba Cigars in Havana on this half-day tour in Havana.  You’ll get to explore a cigar factory and also visit the Havana Club Museum in Havana as well as, of course, taste and understand both of these iconic Cuban products.  Read more about this tour of Cuban Rum and Cigars here.
  • If you’re staying in Varadero, then this combined tour to discover the Cuban history of Sugar, Rum, and Cigars is a fabulous option. There’s a visit to a sugar cane museum, and a trip to the home of the creators of Havana Club rum, followed by lunch and a tasting of local rum and tobacco .  Check out this tour on the trifecta of Cuban specialties here.

The History of Cuban Cigars

It was most likely the Mayans who invented cigars when they too dried tobacco, rolled it in plantain leaves, and smoked it for medicinal purposes, for offerings to Gods, and as an important part of religious ceremonies.

Cuban Cigars in the 15 th century

Roll forward to the 15 th century when Christopher Columbus showed up and Native Americans show him how to smoke.  The habit quickly became popular amongst the Spanish who then exported both the knowledge and the tobacco plants back east to Europe.

As the popularity of tobacco products grew in Europe and the colonies and the demand for growing land grew, it was identified that Cuba had ideal growing conditions for tobacco.  At that time though, most of the cigar factories were built in Spain and for more than a century most of the tobacco leaves grown in Cuban were shipped to Spain to be rolled.  It took a while for the cigar producers to figure out that the manufactured cigars survived the transatlantic journey better than tobacco leaves and that they could make more money by having cigar factories in Cuba right next to where the tobacco was grown.

And so cigar rolling factories were set up in Cuba.  At the same time, a few rules were put in place, to ensure that only the *right* people made the appropriate amounts of money from cigars.

The Tobacco Monopoly of 1717

In 1717 King Philip V of Spain set up a Tobacco Monopoly.  This meant that Cubans could only grow tobacco for Spain.  If you grew, gave, or sold tobacco seeds to the non-Spanish colonies then you got the death sentence.  They were pretty serious about ensuring that the profits went to the crown!

The Repeal of the Tobacco Monopoly

It took 100 hundred years of the Cuban growers revolting against this monopoly before King Ferdinand VII repealed the monopoly.  Kind of.  In 1817 he began allowing Cuban cigars and tobacco to be freely traded through Spanish ports and thus began the Cuban cigar industry.  Those cigars have been playing a big role in both the political and social history of the country ever since – even during the 1962 US trade embargo.

Cuban Cigars during the 1960s Cuban Revolution

It was during the Cuban Revolution in the 1960s that Castro took control of Cuban tobacco farms and subsequently nationalized the industry.  This fundamentally changed the process, of farming and selling Cuban tobacco and cigars.  Most of the wealthy plantation owners were left penniless by Castro’s move and left Cuba, heading to either the Dominican Republic or the USA.  This loss of knowledge of almost an entire industry, along with the US trade embargo led to a huge dip in the industry, as the USA has previously been the biggest export market for Cuban tobacco.

It was good news for Cubans in Cuba.  They got to keep all the premium quality tobacco and they could start exporting to some European countries.  All went well until 1979 when a mold and then a bad harvest killed most of the crops and harvest.  In the years up to 1979, Cuba was exporting around 120 million cigars a year and it didn’t recover to this number until the early 2000s.

It was Obama’s lifting of the ban on Cuban tobacco products in the USA in 2016 that led to a huge boom in the cigar industry, with exports totaling US$500 million in 2017, as reported by Reuters here.

Why Are Cuban Cigars Unique?

Cuban cigars are made in their entirety from Cuban black tobacco, direct descendants of the tobacco plants that were seen by Columbus in 1492.  Cuban Cigars also tend to be hand-rolled.  No machines.

Growing Tobacco in Cuba

Cuban tobacco is grown on small plots of land – each grower can own up to 165 acres to be used for tobacco, but most plots are significantly smaller – less than 10 acres.

Tobacco seeds are initially sown in greenhouses in October, transplanted into the fields after about 4 weeks, and then take around 4 months to grow before being harvested during March and April.

Where is tobacco grown in Cuba?

Tobacco can be grown all over Cuba, but there are four specific regions where tobacco can be grown and used for cigars that are protected by the “Habanao” designation.  These areas are;

The Vuelta Arriba Tobacco Growing Area

There are two separate areas in this particular region – the Remedios area and Oriente

The Vuelta Abajo Tobacco Growing Area

This is in Pinar del Rio province and it’s said to produce some of the world’s best tobacco because of the unique combination of climate and soil.  This is the only region of Cuba in which all varieties of tobacco leaves can be grown.  However, even here, less than 25% of the tobacco grown makes it into Havana cigars.

Tobacco Growing Plantation Vinales

The Partido Tobacco Growing Area

This is a smaller growing area to the southeast of Havana.

The Semi Vuelta Tobacco Growing Area

This area of Cuba, between Havana and Vuelta Abajo, is a specialist area for cigar wrappers and inserts.  Only 1% of the tobacco growing area here is used for cigars, tobacco grown here tends to be used for other uses.

Harvesting Tobacco in Cuba

Tobacco leaves are picked one by one and after the tobacco leaves are picked they’re then bundled together and hung on wooden poles in vented sheds or barns to dry for 45 to 60 days.

Tobacco Drying Racks

These leaves then dry and cure over the weeks they’ll turn from bright green to brown.

Drying Tobacco Leaves Green to Brown

Once dry the leaves are packed into crates and taken to sorting houses, where they are dampened, aired, and flattened.  They’re then left to ferment for up to 3 months.  Cuban tobacco is fermented to remove the traces of ammonia which occurs naturally but can give a sour taste to the cigars.

Once the leaves have fermented, they’re graded, flattened, wetted again, and refermented before being classified again.  And only then are they sent to the cigar factory.  This whole process can take 2 years!

Once tobacco leaves are at the factory they’re graded by their color and strength, as each cigar type has a recipe that uses a certain ratio of leaves and types.   So they’re mixed together and sent to the production room.

Grading Tobacco Leaves in Cuba

Tobacco leaves are graded by where they grew on the plant and each grade of tobacco leaf has a specific use within the cigar.

The leaves with the strongest flavor come from the top of the plant, known as the “corona”.  It’s the leaves from the bottom of the plant that tend to burn the best.  The “fill” of the cigar is usually a blend of leaves from different parts of the plant to get a good taste and a good burn.

The mid-upper portion leaves are stronger and are used as “binders” – they hold the cigar together, but have little flavor.

Filler leaves can be taken from any part of the tobacco plant.

The cigar wrapper tends to come from leaves that have grown in the shade – which means the leaf doesn’t become too thick or oily – these leaves should be soft and have fewer veins.  A lot of flavor tends to come from these leaves and they are more expensive.

Who Makes Cuban Cigars?

For almost 200 years Habanos cigars – apart from a few brands and formats – have been made almost exclusively by hand.   There are a variety of roles in the cigar-making process.

The Maestro Ligador (Mix Master)

Every different brand and type of cigar has a specific recipe –the type and quantity of tobacco leaves used.  The Mixing Master (Maestro Ligador) is in charge of detailing the leaves needed for production and ordering them from factory warehouses.  The Ligador also works out the ratio and percentages of the different types of leaves for each cigar.  Once the batches of leaves are produced each day, in these specific ratios then they’re handed over to the cigar makers each day.

The Torcedores (Cigar Makers)

The process of making a hand-made cigar is the same.  There are four different levels of Torcedor (or Torcedora for women).  The highest level of Torcedor makes the most difficult and larger cigars and usually makes less per day.

Preparing to Make a Cigar

Normal torcedors tend to roll around 100 cigars a day.  They have several tools for their job

  • Wooden board
  • Two cutters – a special blade (Chaveta) and a tube (Casquillo)
  • Natural, tasteless vegetable glue (Goma)
  • Gauge for checking the check length and diameter of the cigar.

Making a Cigar

You’ll get to see this in practice on any of the Cuban cigar tours that you go on.  I recommend these

  • Take a Cuban Cigar workshop in Havana – this early evening workshop provides you, while you have a drink in hand with all the details of how Cuban cigars are made.  You’ll learn the history of Cuban cigars and then make your own.  Reserve a place now.
  • If you’re staying in Varadero, then this combined tour to discover the Cuban history of Sugar, Rum, and Cigars is a fabulous option. There’s a visit to a sugar cane museum, and a trip to the home of the creators of Havana Club rum, followed by lunch and a tasting of both products.

Rolling Cigars

The Lector (Reader)

The custom of having a professional reader – Lector – in cigar factories dates back to the 1800s at a time when the readers had an important role in spreading political ideas of the day.  This led to the well-read (or well read-to) tobacco workers joining the Cuban independence fight.  The material that the Lector reads includes news, and novels – one famous one was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas (ah!  I hear you all say, and yes it’s connected and that’s why the Monte Cristo is so named).

El Jefe de Galera (the Manager/Boss/Supervisor)

As well as supervising the torcedores, el Jefe is responsible for quality control.  Cigars are batched bundled, and marked with the torcedores number and details of the date of manufacture and brand.   They’re examined by weight, length, diameter, quality, and appearance.  There are even random samples taken to check the inner structure and the blend.

Bundled up Final Cigar Products

The Catadores – the Tasters

Each factory also has a team of tasters, who smoke a few cigars each day – looking for even burning, strength, taste, aroma, and quality.

After all this is done, the cigars are rested in the Escaparate aka the treasure room or the showroom.

Resting cigars in the Escaparate

Before the cigars are packed, they’re placed in the Esaparate to lose any excess moisture.  These rooms have a constant temperature of 16 to 18º C and a relative humidity of between 65 and 70 percent.  They’re usually left there for a week before they are ready for smoking

Les Escogedores (the Sorters)

The sorters are responsible for bundling 25 or 50 cigars of the same color.  They work with a color stencil to ensure all are the same.  There will be a variation of colors within the same box, so they’re sorted with the darkest on one side of the box and the lighter ones on the other side.

The Anillador (the Belly Band Wrappers)

It wasn’t until about 1850 that the belly band or “anilla” was introduced, it’s said, to prevent wealthy customers from dirtying their white gloves while smoking.  It was Gustav Bock, the Dutch/German who emigrated to Cuba who introduced this.  Each belly band is carefully wrapped around a cigar and they are then placed face-side up in the box.

How to Tell a Fake Cuban Cigar

Well, good luck on this one.  You’ll find that most of Cuba’s fake cigars are actually made here.  Along with the fake box, the fake stamps, the fake seals, and the fake belly band.  There are two good ways to tell if a cigar is fake.

  • Only ever buy from an official store or the official factory.
  • If it’s cheap, then it’s 100% likely to be fake.

Finished Cigars

Buying Cigars in Cuba

The official “La Casa del Habano” stores are the official stores for buying Cuban Cigars.  You’ll find them in Havana and all the major cities where tourists venture to.  Depending on the store that you visit they could have a smoking lounge, they may have a walk-in humidor and they also may have knowledgeable managers.  Or they may not.

You’ll also be able to buy cigars at most tourist hotels (not casa particulars).  And if you take a specific Cigar tour you’ll be able to buy them there.  We also bought cigars at the farm that we visited on our trip to Vinales.   We also bought a cigar from a chap in the street in Santiago de Cuba – to be fair, he spent ages trying to convince us, we had a good chat in rudimentary Spanish and we paid our dollar for the entertainment more than anything else.  Which leads me to the next point.

Don’t buy cigars on the street.  Whoever approaches you (and you will be approached) will claim that the cigar is the real deal, but it’s cheap because they work there and were able to acquire a few.  Or similar such stories.

Or do buy them.  Give it a go.  But they won’t be real.  They’ll be made from inferior tobacco leaves.

All the handmade cigars in Cuba will have

  • A Cubatabaco stamp
  • A factory mark

If the cigar is handmade then it will say “Hecho en Cuba. Totalmente a Mano.”, which means” Made in Cuba. Completely by Hand.

Cigars that have “Hecho a Mano” likely means that the cigar was made by machine and hand finished with the wrapper put on by and.

If the cigar has a label saying “Hecho en Cuba” then it’s a 100% surety that the cigar was made by machine.

Frequently Asked Questions:  FAQs about Cuban Cigars

Got questions about Cuban cigars? Or want to know more about exploring Cuba and the world of Cigars and we haven’t answered your questions?  Check out our frequently asked questions about how to make Cuban cigars and how to see it in action below, or ask us yours in the comments.

How many Cuban Cigars can you buy (and take home)?

It’s prohibited to take Cuban cigars into the USA. ( source ).  This applies to non-US citizens/residents as well.  ( source )

For the rest of the world, you’ll need to check with your own government how many cigars you are allowed to take back into the country.  There are duty-free allowances for each country and you’ll also be able to find out the duty payable if you go over this.

What is the guarantee seal of the Republic of Cuba

The guarantee seal appears on all tobacco products from Cuba.  It was the order of the King of Spain in 1889 that first brought in the guarantee seal, as Cuba was a Spanish colony at this time.  After Cuba’s independence in 1902, a new law was brought in in 1912 that delivered a new design for the guarantee seal.  As of 1999 a red serial number and an emblem that can only be seen under ultraviolet light were added.

Which is Better?  A Thick or a Thin Cigar?

The thicker a cigar is, the more flavor it has and the cooler the smoke is because there is more air pulled into the cigar to cool it.  Thicker cigars are, it’s said, easier to smoke because they burn more slowly and more evenly.

There aren’t many people around the world who don’t automatically put together Cuba and Cigars.  And rightly so.  They’re a well-known export from Cuba.  And where better to see them made, to understand more about them and the impact that they’ve had on the world than on the island of Cuba itself?

Shakira new music

On March 22, Shakira released her 12th studio album “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.”

Comprised of 17 tracks featuring big-name collaborators like Cardi B, Bizarrap, Grupo Frontera, Rauw Alejandro and Ozuna among others, the 47-year-old songstress sticks to español this time around. However, whether or not you speak Spanish is besides the point; Shakira’s music this time around is so catchy, you won’t mind looking up what they lyrics mean on Google Translate.

Highlights include the dance floor ready hit “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” the infectious mariachi inspired “El Jefe” with Fuerza Regida and the icy “TQG” featuring Karol G.

While the whole album slaps, we’d be remiss if we didn’t shout our favorite track: the disco-flavored “Cohete.” We can’t stop listening.

Want to check it out for yourself? You can find “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” here .

Prior to announcing the tour, Shakira surprised the crowd at at Coachella on Friday, April 12 when she performed “La Fuerte” and “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” alongside Bizzarap.

J. Cole apologizes to Kendrick Lamar for 'lame' diss '7 Minute Drill': 'I was conflicted'

'We Don't Trust You' and 'We Still Don't Trust You' vs. Drake: Diss tracks explained

Future and Metro Boomin's "We Don't Trust You," released March 22, and "We Still Don't Trust You," released April 12, unleashed grievances other rappers had with Toronto rapper Drake.

Lamar, Cole and Drake are widely recognized as their rap class' "Big Three," the most recognizable stars in the genre over the past decade. Cole referred to himself, Drake (Aubrey Graham) and Lamar (K. Dot) as the "big three" in modern rap in Drake's 2023 song "First Person Shooter."

Lamar shut down the "big three" line on the "We Don't Trust You" track "Like That." In the song, he called out "First Person Shooter" by name and said "it's just big me" when it comes to rap titans.

Following the diss, J. Cole dropped a surprise album, "Might Delete Later," which included "7 Minute Drill," where Cole alluded to hearing about Lamar's diss, rapping, "I got a phone call, they say that somebody dissing / You want some attention, it come with extensions."

"He still doing shows but fell off like 'The Simpsons,'" the North Carolina rapper continued, adding that Lamar's first album was "classic" and his latest was "tragic."

But two days later,  at his Dreamville Festival,  J. Cole told his home state crowd during a headlining set that his diss track was a "lame" and "goofy" decision, in  videos captured by attendees .

J. Cole later appeared as a guest on the "We Still Don't Trust You" track "Red Leather," a seven-minute song that features an apparent swipe at Drake.

"Kept my nose out the streets, but I love to get a whiff / Of the action, with risk comes attraction / The blicks get to blastin’, I turn into a track star,” Cole raps on the track, who also said that his "story's more clever, my similes was better."

Rapper A$AP Rocky, who is the longtime boyfriend of Drake's ex  Rihanna,  also took shots at Drake on the "We Still Don't Trust You" track "Show of Hands," saying the Canadian rapper's latest music "came and went" and he didn't "trust" him.

The Weeknd joined the band wagon on "We Still Don't Trust You," remarking on the track "All to Myself" that he's glad never "signed (his) life away" to Drake's OVO label. He also took aim at Drake's "shooters," joking that they're too busy "making TikToks."

Future didn't let his features have all the fun. On the track "This Sunday," Future seemingly interpolates the chorus of Drake’s 2016 song "Feel No Ways" by telling his former "Life Is Good" collaborator that he doesn't care if Drake "feel a way" about all the disses.

Drake has yet to issue a formal response to the diss tracks, although a rumored single allegedly called "Push Ups" was leaked on social media Saturday that seemingly addresses Lamar and Metro Boomin.

Best Travel Duffel Bags 2024

Here are some of the top travel duffel bags you can buy today, including this Patagonia Black Hole style. REI

  • Dawn Magyar | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

If you have a getaway planned for the summer, you’ll need a durable bag to stand up to all the adventures you have planned during your trip.

A travel duffel bag is the perfect companion for those summer vacations as it allows you to pack what you need with ample roominess and easy portability. These bags also offer compartments to keep your personal belongings organized with adjustable straps to sling over the shoulder or carry as a backpack.

But with so many different duffel bag styles to choose from, it can be a challenge to decide which one to buy.

To help, here are some of the most recommended travel duffel bags available, including styles from Patagonia and Beis .

  • Patagonia Black Hole Duffel: “This bag is the most versatile gear duffle we’ve found. It’s tough, water-resistant, and great for toting clothes and equipment in almost any travel or outdoor scenario,” Wirecutter says.
  • Beis Commuter Duffel: “The bag is bursting with compartments and pockets for organizing small, medium, and large items so you can pack efficiently before a weekend getaway. After we packed the bag full of clothing, shoes, and a toiletry bag, it was fairly heavy, but the shoulder and tote straps were shockingly comfortable and helped balance out the weight,” Travel + Leisure says.
  • REI Co-op Roadtripper: “The REI Roadtripper offers excellent storage and utility at over half the price of other bags, making it an exceptional value for a duffel bag on a budget,” GearLab says.
  • Away The Everywhere Bag: “It’s made of nylon with leather details on the handles and straps and it features two large outer pockets. Inside, it’s just as well-organized, with a 15-inch laptop sleeve and a host of zippered and slip pockets to hold everything from a paperback to your mobile phone,” Popular Mechanics says.
  • Osprey Transporter Duffel Bag: “After testing a series of duffels, the Osprey Transporter 40L stands out as the go-to hauler for a long weekend. It features a zippered end pocket about the exterior for smaller items like keys or headphones, and a large, easy-to-access main body with a lockable U-zipper carries everything from shirts and shorts to technical equipment,” Forbes says.

These Are My All-time Favorite White Linen Pants for Hot, Humid Destinations — Plus, 13 More Options From $27

They’re airy, not see-through, and easily the best thing I packed for Southeast Asia.

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

I’m a frequent traveler who’s typically pretty chill about packing — I might start an hour before I plan to head to the airport and figure if I forget anything, I can just buy what I need at my destination. But last summer, when I was tasked with picking out what I’d wear for a whirlwind press trip to Southeast Asia (spending four nights in Phuket, Thailand, one night in Bangkok, and two nights near Ubud in Bali, Indonesia), I definitely felt more pressure to really get it right. There were seemingly endless plane rides ahead, some fancy dinners, and much exploring to be done, with little down time to pick up new outfits. Also, it was June and 90 degrees Fahrenheit in Thailand. Truly breathable clothing was essential, to say the least.

All of this leads me to the summer travel wardrobe staple that has saved me whenever I’m faced with these more crucial packing moments: the Angie Crop Wide Leg Pant from Splendid. These high-waisted, comfy drawstring white linen pants (which you can get at Nordstrom) come with me on all of my warm-weather trips, and they were especially clutch during my travels across Southeast Asia. They’re incredibly light and airy, and somehow didn’t hold onto any sweat smells even after being worn at least five times throughout my trip. Made from 73 percent lyocell and 27 percent linen, they withstand creasing more than purely linen pants (always a plus while traveling).

Splendid Angie Crop Wide Leg Pant

During my trip, my group stayed at Banyan Tree Veya in Phuket, Banyan Tree Bangkok , and Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape in Bali. These resorts — and the people working and staying there — are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, so I wanted to look nice enough to fit in. In other words, this was a once-in-a-lifetime trip, where I planned to take about 3 million photos, so selecting solid, workhorse pieces that were easy to mix and match, dress up or down, and could keep me cool, was key. I’m also a staunch carry-on-only gal, so I have a high standard for what makes it in my small suitcase. These pants fit the bill. They’re classic and stylish, which meant I could use them on tourist outings in Phuket spent walking through steamy markets and sight-seeing on tuk-tuks, and to upscale lagoon-boat-ride dinners. For daytime, I’d style them with sandals, a one-shoulder tank, and a scarf (for coverage at temples), and at night, I’d pair them with chunky wedges, a colorful halter top, a woven belt, and a matching linen button-down. The slightly cropped length is great for shorter people like me (I’m 5’4”), who often deal with dragging hems.

Linen basics certainly aren’t anything new, but as any tropical traveler knows, finding the perfect pair of “Big Pants,” aka flowy but flattering, wrinkle-resistant, and not see-through bottoms you can wear with anything, is no small task. After sweating my way around Thailand and Bali in the heat and humidity, trying to look hot without feeling it, I’m confident that these are the ones you buy to end your search for good.

Travel + Leisure / Kristin Canning

Everything I have from Splendid, which was founded with the goal of creating the ultimate comfy T-shirt (something I can definitely get behind!), has really impressed me when it comes to quality, has lasted through years of regular wear, and is totally worth the investment. They have a plethora of versatile and durable basics that make them a great brand to peruse for solid travel items — I have these pants in white and black, and I want to get even more.

Better than all the benefits of the fabric blend, style, and construction of these pants was the way they made me feel. Big Pants are a lifestyle. When you have them on, you just feel free, like you should be dancing near a palm tree, drinking out of a coconut, or swaying in a hammock. Buahan, the adults-only Banyan Tree resort in Bali that’s made up of 16 private villas tucked into a jungle hillside (there are no walls separating you from nature, only curtains), is frankly the most stunning destination I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting, but it’s not a place you really dress up. It’s sexy and relaxed, and in these pants, paired with a patterned scarf tied up as a top, I felt comfortable with and appreciative of my body, and I melted right into the sensual vibe. Certain clothes can get you into vacation mode mentally, help you transition into the laid-back version of yourself more easily. For me, these pants have that power. Whether I was trekking to the Tjampuhan Waterfall, exploring rice paddies filled with fireflies, or touring Taro, one of the oldest villages in Bali, and enjoying some jamu and laklak, this pant was my trusted companion.

If you’re feeling inspired to stock up on some breezy linen pants for your upcoming summer trips, the ones below are other gorgeous options I’ve been eyeing, in all kinds of styles and colors, and at various price points. May you be kicking back in Big Pants soon!

Abercrombie Women’s Linen-Blend Pull-On Pant

Abercrombie & Fitch

These minimalist, linen-viscose blend pants are totally effortless. They’re lined and have a hidden drawcord for more adjustability. Reviewers love ’em and say they’re “not see-through at all” — a major feat for any white pants.

Athleta Women’s Retreat Wide Leg Linen Pant

Athleta makes some of my all-time favorite workout leggings and bras, so I trust that these 100 percent linen pants have a comfortable and flattering fit. This pair stands out thanks to its split hem and zippered front pockets.

Quince Women’s 100% European Linen Pants

These mid-rise, ankle-cropped pants also feature sustainable linen sourced from Europe for a great price (which Quince is known for). If you’re dipping your toe (er, leg) into the 100 percent linen pants world for the first time, these laid-back, affordable capris are a great place to start.

Madewell Women’s Harlow Wide-Leg Pant in 100% Linen

I’m obsessed with the blue and white striped pattern on these Madewell trousers (the distant surplus color is equally as gorgeous). They’re a more tailored option, with belt loops, subtle pleats, and buttoned back pockets, but the wide leg and light fabric keeps them breezy. Wear them with the matching Scoop Neck Crop Tank and you have yourself the ultimate flattering vacation dinner outfit.

Everlane Women’s Linen Easy Pant

These 100 percent linen trousers, with their pull-on waistband and sleek, straight-leg fit, are the definition of casual chic — perfect for dressing up or down. They’re full length without pooling on the ground, and I love that they can be paired with the Linen High-Neck Tank to make a matching set, so you can devote exactly zero energy to putting a cute, breathable outfit together when you’re on vacation. Also cool: The fabric is made from flax fibers that are cultivated according to the European Confederation of Flax and Hemp, which means they’re sourced from Belgium, France, and the Netherlands via a more sustainable, environmentally friendly operation.

Utcoco Women’s Cotton Linen Drawstring High Waisted Pants

These wide-leg, drawstring pants — made from an 80/20 linen-cotton blend — are the perfect loose-fitting, lightweight bottoms for tourist-ing around coastal towns and hanging out at the beach (particularly in this soothing sage green color). I’d pair them with a white tied-up T-shirt or a bikini top and a breezy, open button-down.

Anrabess Women’s Linen Pants

These super high-waisted, slightly cropped, flowy drawstring pants (made from 30 percent linen and 70 percent rayon), look like the pants you need when you’re planning to eat a bunch of delicious, new-to-you foods at three different restaurants in one day and may end up just a wee bit bloated. They look extremely comfortable, flattering, and easy; the ruffled waist is a cute detail, too.

Athleta Women’s Retreat Linen Jogger

Made with 100 percent linen, these jogger-style pants (with the same zippered front pockets as the wide-leg pair from Athleta) would look cute with tennis shoes, chunky sandals, or even wedges. If you love sweats with cuffed ankles, these are an elevated (and airier) swap that will still feel comfortable on vacay.

Anrabess Women’s Linen Palazzo Pants

Seemingly designed specifically for lounging on a pool chaise in the tropics, these 70 percent rayon, 30 percent linen pants are begging to be packed for your next trip. The thick, smocked waistband looks extremely stretchy and comfortable, and I love the extensive range of colors. The only downside: The care instructions recommend dry cleaning only.

Iximo Women’s Tapered Pants

If you’re looking for a tapered pant that leans more trouser than jogger, this is it. The 100 percent linen bottoms have a slim fit, and a unique waistband with a drawstring in front and elastic scrunch in the back. One note: Care instructions call for hand washing only.

Madewell Women’s Pull-On Straight Crop Pant

Something about this sky baby blue pant and button-down combo screams breezy, sun-soaked getaway. The pants are made from a linen-viscose blend (using a viscose that takes less resources to produce), and the crop and pin tucks help strike that balance between tailored and relaxed.

J.Crew Women’s Soleil Pant in Linen

This is just a perfect, classic pair of 100 percent linen drawstring pants that could honestly become a wardrobe staple outside of travel. I appreciate the bright, vacation-worthy color options, and the wide size and height ranges.

BDG Urban Outfitters Women’s Cocoon Cotton & Linen Cargo Pants

Sneakers or sandals would look great with these cool cargo pants made of 65 percent cotton and 35 percent linen. The baggy, low-rise style would be cute with a fun crop top, too, and the denim-all-day girlies can get a similar vibe with these when it’s simply too hot and muggy for jeans.
