Written by Freddy Sherman Updated Mar 20, 2023

Author Freddy Sherman has visited Singapore multiple times, most recently to attend the Singapore Grand Prix in October 2022.

The city-state of Singapore sits on the end of the Malaysian peninsula, a short ferry ride from Indonesia. While Singapore is filled with things to see, do, buy, and eat , sometimes you need to get away.

There is a wide range of weekend getaway destinations near Singapore or at least within a few hours by car, bus, or plane. Families may want to consider a nearby self-contained resort destination like Sentosa Island , while couples might consider an island getaway to a place like Bintan .

Plan your travels with our list of the top weekend getaways from Singapore.

1. Desaru Coast, Malaysia

2. malacca, malaysia, 3. bintan island, indonesia, 4. krabi, thailand, 5. bali, indonesia, 6. sentosa island, singapore, 7. iskandar puteri, malaysia, 8. penang, malaysia, 9. hoi an, vietnam, 10. yangon, myanmar, 11. kuala lumpur, malaysia, 12. batam, indonesia, 13. johor bahru, malaysia, 14. yogyakarta, indonesia, 15. langkawi, malaysia, 16. siem reap, cambodia, map of weekend getaways from singapore.

Desaru Beach

This Malaysian beach resort is home to pristine beaches with clear, warm blue water, and it's perfect for quick getaways. The area has four resort hotel options along with excellent shopping and dining.

Getting to the Desaru Coast from Singapore is easy. It takes about two hours by car via the Causeway, about 90 minutes via bus, or an hour if you take the ferry (and then shuttle into the resort area). Once you're there, several complimentary shuttles can take you anywhere you need to go.

Aside from the beautiful beaches, the resort is known for golf with a full 18-hole course (designed by iconic players Ernie Els and Vijay Singh) along with three different nine-hole courses located along the coastline. Each course has its own clubhouse and extensive golf facilities including a golf training academy, driving range, and restaurants.

It's also a popular surfing and snorkeling spot, offering a range of water sports to visitors. For some wet family fun, the area is home to the Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark .

Jonker Street, Malacca

Another top weekend getaway from Singapore is Malacca, a Malaysian beach city about three hours from Singapore by bus or car. It's a former Portuguese, Dutch, then British colony, and this mix contributes to its unique and fascinating history, architecture, culture, and food. It's filled with many museums, historical sites, and tourist attractions like zoos and water parks.

The Dutch and Portuguese history is particularly interesting, and many of the colonial buildings from the occupation by both countries still exist. You can even visit a fortress in Malacca; A Famosa is a Portuguese fort built in the 16 th century. On weekend nights, don't miss the Jonker Street Night Market , where all these cultural influences can be tasted in the form of street food.

Tropical beach on Bintan Island

This Indonesian island resort is a great weekend getaway from Singapore, as it only takes about 50 minutes to get here by ferry . It's also a popular place for sea turtles; six of the world's seven species of sea turtles are found in Indonesia.

Bintan gives visitors a full range of vacation activities. There are spas and shopping for indoor fun, and there are also great water sports and outdoor adventures. You can explore the island's incredible nature and wildlife or discover its fascinating cultural heritage.

Sentosa Island

One of the closest beach resorts to Singapore is only a 15-minute monorail (or cable car or Uber) ride away. Sentosa Island has several beach resorts, as well as family hotels and luxury getaway spots including an underwater hotel.

You can even walk to Sentosa using the Sentosa Boardwalk, some of which is an automated, moving sidewalk. More than just a route, the boardwalk has five lush, indigenous tropical landscapes only found in Singapore. It also gives you beautiful views across the bay, with lots of spots to stop for photos.

Sentosa Island is a great family destination and home to the Universal Studios Singapore theme park, as well as a few other amusement parks and water parks. There are several large beaches and a huge range of things to do, including lots of outdoor activities like bungee jumping and indoor skydiving.

Once you're here, there is a complimentary bus service and a beach shuttle to get you around. The Singapore Express monorail can also be used to get from one part of the island to the other.

There are also many free things to do in Sentosa. Aside from enjoying the beach, you can walk on the Fort Siloso Skywalk. The 181-meter (about 600-foot) skywalk is 11 stories above the forest. You get a scenic view of the trees and the harbor. The site is also quite historic, Fort Siloso was built by the British in the 19th century to guard the entrance to Singapore harbor. You can also visit the fort itself, which is now a museum and educational site.

Shwedagon Pagoda at dusk

The capital city of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) is just under a three-hour flight from Singapore. This seriously exotic destination remains relatively undiscovered for Western tourists.

This city is filled with temples and pagodas, the most blingy being the Shwedagon Pagoda , Myanmar's version of the Taj Mahal. It was built with more than 4,500 diamonds in its structure, including a 72-carat mega-diamond at the top.

As if to compete with the diamond pagoda, the Sule Pagoda is covered in pure gold. These pagodas are joined by Buddhist temples, interesting British colonial architecture, and a constantly increasing number of modern skyscrapers.

Kuala Lumpur

Referred to as "KL" by the locals, Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's capital city and it provides the typical wide range of activities (cultural, adventure, food, music, shopping) found in a big, cosmopolitan city. Kuala Lumpur is only an hour's flight (or a five-hour bus ride) from Singapore.

Aside from the great food scene and excellent shopping in KL, be sure to visit two of the city's (and the world's) tallest attractions. The Petronas Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in the world at one time and remain the tallest twin towers in the world. You can go up to the observation area for amazing city views.

Even taller than the Petronas Twin Towers, the KL Tower , also known as the Menara Kuala Lumpur, is the seventh-tallest freestanding structure in the world, which houses several observation areas and restaurants.

You can do all kinds of things on the water, including sailing, surfing, and jet skiing. There's even a water ski park, with multiple cables that pull you through the water (no ski boats needed).

Like its twin island Bintan , it's so close, it's visible from Singapore. Batam is a free-trade zone, so there's some great duty-free shopping, especially in the main city of Nagoya. The beachfront resorts are in the Nongsa area.

Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque

This Malaysian city is one of the best cheap getaways from Singapore, as it's only 45 minutes away via car or bus. There are also several museums and mosques that can be visited, including the large Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque .

The city is also home to the Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple , the world's first Hindu temple covered in glass. The entire interior and exterior are covered in pieces of clear, mirrored, and colored glass.

A very popular tourist attraction, the Legoland Malaysia Resort is in Johor Bahru, as is one of the region's largest outlet malls, the Johor Outlets.

Borobudur, Yogyakarta

This ancient city is on the Indonesian island of Java, about a two-and-a-half-hour flight from Singapore. Ruled by a sultan, Yogyakarta is the only recognized monarchy in Indonesia. It's the best place to learn about and experience traditional Javanese culture, including art, textiles, music, and literature.

The city's history goes back to its founding in the 8 th century CE. Borobudur and Prambanan are two significant archeological sites, ancient temple complexes like Cambodia's Angkor Wat. Borobudur is the world's largest Buddhist temple, and Prambanan is a Hindu temple complex built in the 9 th century. They're both about an hour outside the city, and both are must-see attractions .

Tanjung Rhu Beach, Langkawi

Langkawi is a Malaysian archipelago of 99 islands located near the border with Thailand. This Malaysian beach resort near Singapore is a 90-minute flight from Changi Airport. The main island is Langkawi Island, and it's part of the Southern Islands area, which is popular with tourists. The Northern Islands are mostly deserted and not open to visitors.

The islands are popular with beachgoers, as well as SCUBA divers and snorkelers. Be sure to ride the cable car up Gunung Mat Chinchang mountain, as then you can walk on the Sky Bridge. It's a raised walkway allowing visitors to get a close-up look at the fascinating world of the rainforest canopy.

The destination really does have something for everyone, from tropical beaches fronting azure waters to nature reserves filled with protected flora and fauna. Unlike some of the other island getaway destinations close to Singapore, Langkawi offers visitors the full range of luxury resort options from all the major international brands.

Angkor Wat

This Cambodian city is just over a two-hour flight from Singapore. The focus in Siem Reap is, of course, on the amazing Angkor temple complex, which is actually several vast archeological sites including Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Prohm, and Banteay Srei. It's a popular tourist destination, so there are lots of hotels (in all price points) and restaurants in the small town.

An early morning hot air balloon flight is an excellent way to get a drone's-eye view of all the ruin sites. Cambodia's capital city of Phnom Penh is also an hour's flight from Singapore and offers an exciting mix of history, culture, shopping, and food.

The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Brunei

Brunei is a tiny nation, a part of the island of Borneo, sharing the island with both Indonesia and Malaysia. Independent since 1984, the country has great wealth due to oil and natural gas resources.

It's a very safe place to visit and is just starting to appear on international travelers' radars. Brunei has also started to really make an effort to appeal to travelers, with English signage and speakers and good internal transportation infrastructure.

The big appeal here is the rainforests and sheer natural beauty. There are also stunning coastal areas. Both are filled with a variety of indigenous natural flora and fauna. There are a lot of options for outdoor activities and adventure sports, too.

Brunei is also home to some amazing culture and history, going back tens of thousands of years. To promote cultural experiences, the government coordinates homestays where travelers can experience Brunei's culture first-hand.

The best way to get from Singapore to Brunei is to fly; it's about a two-hour flight. You could combine a Borneo and Brunei visit on the same trip.

Day trips from Singapore

Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands

This popular hilltop retreat in Malaysia has something for everyone – whether you're heading to the casino or spending the day with your family at the kid-friendly theme parks.

EAT  Burger & Lobster Malaysia

Skip the queues at the Burger & Lobster outlets in Singapore and head to the establishment's first Southeast Asia outlet at Genting Highland's lifestyle mall, SkyAvenue. If you have specific dietary requirements, the Genting outlet is also the chain's first halal restaurant. You can't miss the restaurant's signature Chilli Lobster, which is exclusive to the Malaysia outlet.

DRINK  Powerplant Malaysia

This Korean jaunt is the place to go to for fried chicken, hot pot, and ice-cold beers – all while vibing to the live music every night.

DO  Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park

Leave your worries at the door and have an exhilarating time at the newly renovated Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park, which has state-of-the-art rides, such as the virtual reality centre with a variety of experiences from Star Wars, to Wreck-it Ralph and Ghostbusters.

STAY Resort Hotel

If you're staying the weekend, cosy up at Resort Hotel to be right in the middle of the action. The Mezzanine Deluxe Room is perfect for couples, while the Deluxe Twin room is great if you're travelling with friends. You'll have views overlooking the mountains, too.

If you do just one thing...  Don't miss the chance to embark on the Awana SkyWay, which takes you up to the peak in just 10 minutes. On the scenic ride up, you get a free stop at the Chin Swee Station, where you can explore the magnificent Chin Swee Caves Temple.

Ipoh

Once a sleepy village in the valley of the Kinta River, Ipoh has undergone a transformation over the years and is now one of Malaysia's coolest emerging destinations. It evokes a retro-vibe, reminiscent of Kuala Lumpur in the past.

EAT Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong  Ipoh is known for its hawker fare. One institution popular with both locals and tourists is Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong, where you can find one of Ipoh's delicacies: bean sprouts with chicken rice.

DRINK  Restaurant Ah Chow  Ipoh is the birthplace of Malaysia's famous white coffee, and you can easily find it in retro cafes scattered throughout the city. Besides the original Old Town White Coffee Shop, check out local favourite Restaurant Ah Chow. Here's a tip: Ask for the "secret weapon" menu option, their kopi o kosong – which is essentially white coffee prepared with a hint of alcohol.

DO Ulu Geroh Rafflesia Trail

Trek the Ulu Geroh Rafflesia Trail, located a little way outside of Ipoh in the village of Ulu Geroh in Gopeng. Besides the largest flower in the world, you will also chance upon rubber plantations, durian orchards, and quaint local villages. However, take note that to trek along the trail, you will need a Semai Orang Asli guide from the village.

STAY Sekeping Kong Heng Hotel One of the first boutique hotels in Ipoh that sparked its new identity, Sekeping Kong Heng Hotel takes over a preserved three-storey neo-classical building. Don't skip the eponymous famous coffee shop on the ground floor, serving up amazing coffee and some of the best local dishes in town.

If you do just one thing...  Explore Ipoh's historic laneways, such as Concubine Lane, for its street art and culture precincts. Ipoh's preserved architecture is a sight to behold, consisting of heritage shophouses with Chinese and British colonial elements – complete with five-foot ways and pretty shutters and tiles.

Malacca

If you're looking for an idyllic heritage town to spend a quiet weekend in, the charming and quaint Malacca is only a few hours drive away from Singapore. Rows of shophouses, Peranakan antiques, winding laneways and plentiful of good food at every corner, this town is your dream road trip destination. There's history, heaps of culture, too much food and many happy photo opportunities to be had.

EAT Pak Putra

Despite all the guide books telling you to eat your weight in assam laksa and chicken rice balls, skip the advice and try out Pak Putra, an open-air, open-at-night-only establishment. For the best naan you'll have, amazing Tandoori chicken, and assorted curries, this is a must-go when you're in town.

DRINK The Daily Fix

Blink and you might miss this buzzy cafe located within a gift store. You'll be surprised to find that this is no sleepy, quiet spot. Still, if you do bag a spot, the coffee is the best in town. Rose lattes, ice mochas and the cold-brewed tea (ask the staff to see what's brewing for the day), it's the erfect complement to your short getaway. The kids will love the selection of fluffy pancakes in gula melaka, chocolate chip and more.

DO The Clay House

Here's a different sort of holiday shopping: it's where you take the time to make your own wares to bring home. Drop by the rustic store and pottery studio where you can sign up for a session to get your hands dirty. From sculpting to glazing, you'll be bringing home your own handmade cups, bowls, lamps, aromatherapy burners and more.

STAY 1825 Gallery Hotel

When in Malacca, stay by the river, just so you won't be too far from all the good food and good spots in town. This colonial-style heritage building is located just outside the main Jonker Street area but still close to everything. Rooms are spacious so if you're rooming with the family, there's enough sleeping space for everyone. Splurge on a room upgrade with river views, a balcony and your own personal whirlpool tub.

If you do just one thing... Besides just eating and cafe-hopping, Malacca is huge on its antique stores as well. From Chinese porcelain stools to crystals and gemstones (think agate face rollers and rose quartz stone massagers), batik and fabric stores to rattan furniture shops, it's a different kind of shopping sans malls here in Malacca.

Penang

A popular weekend getaway for its famous hawker food, street art, history and culture, Penang is a great pick for a quick getaway from Singapore. Whether you choose to go on a road trip with friends or catch a quick and cheap flight there, the first thing you will surely do when you reach is to go on an eating binge.

EAT Kafe Khoon Hiang

When in Penang, you have to try one of the most famous local offerings, char kway teow. Don't think that just because you've tasted the ones here, you've tasted it all. The charred flat rice noodles are tossed with juicy prawns, crunchy bean sprouts and scrambled duck eggs.

DRINK The Canteen At ChinaHouse

When hanging out in a new town on holiday, kicking back with a cold drink in hand and all-around chill vibes are important. At The Canteen, it's all about dressing down and enjoying the nightly live music covering genres from jazz to indie, while sipping on your favourite cocktail.

DO  Penang National Park

If you have had enough of culture and the food, pack your bags and hike the Penang National Park. See the best of Penang's rainforests and beaches in this huge park. Enjoy spectacular views from canopy trails or sink your feet into the pristine sand on the beach.

STAY Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

If it looks familiar to you, you might recognise it from an important scene in Crazy Rich Asians. The mansion also happens to be a boutique hotel with 18 personalised rooms – and all of the rooms are different and tastefully decorated with 19th-century antiques.

If you do just one thing... Hunt for murals on the street of Penang. Penang's famous and colourful murals have made for Instagram fodder. There's one on almost every wall so get exploring and remember to snap some pics.

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur

Leaving the city to another city? Kuala Lumpur it is. There's much to see and do (and eat) in this city that seemingly never sleeps. From suppers in the open air to fancy air-conditioned malls, the familiarity might even remind you of Singapore at times but with a myriad of new adventures waiting for you.

EAT Wong Ah Wah Restaurant

When in KL be sure to make some time for some barbecue chicken wings – possibly the best you'll ever have at this no-frills open-air zi char place at food street, Jalan Alor. While you won't go wrong with the standard dishes like salted egg yolk chicken, braised vegetables and fried rice, it's the chicken that's barbecued right in front of you that is the absolute standout. Brined overnight, the end result is a smoky, salty and just-the-right-amount of oily masterpiece.

DRINK PS150

Have fun trying to find this speakeasy in KL's Chinatown, Petaling Street. Housed in an old shophouse that was once a brother, the space is unassuming, intimate (think In The Mood For Love vibes) and romantic all at once. The drink menu is divided into five distinct eras in the history of cocktails itself: Vintage, Prohibition, Tiki, Disco and Contemporary.

DO Batu Caves

Interestingly enough, one thing to do in KL is to get out of KL. A 30-minute train ride, or 13km from the city is the majestic Batu Caves worth seeing in the flesh. Batu Caves is a limestone hill comprising three major caves and a number of smaller ones. Be prepared to be climbing steps all day and exploring the depths of several caves – remember to bring your cameras!

STAY Alila Bangsar Hotel

You're in for an urban retreat when you book a room at the new Alila Bangsar. City life away from the city will never be this chic. With tasteful and modern decor, an amazing pool with a view, pool-side yoga and impeccable room service, it's great to get away from downtown life once in a while.

If you do just one thing... If sticking to central KL is your prerogative, then all you can is shop and eat to your heart' content. Go mall-hopping along Bukit Bintang and be impressed by the sheer amount of boutiques and shops in a major mall. Ready your cards, you'll be using it lot. When it comes to food, you'll be spoilt for choice with the in-mall restaurants or venture out to Jalan Alor for a taste of hawker life in Malaysia.

Pulau Ubin

Time-travel back to the golden kampung days at the beloved Pulau Ubin, a rustic island off the north-eastern coast of Singapore. Located just a 15-minute boat ride from mainland Singapore, you can realistically explore the whole island (about 10.2 square kilometres) in just a day.

EAT  Cheong Lian Yuen Coffee Shop

This unassuming dining establishment near the jetty is the perfect place to wind down after cycling or hiking around the island. Tuck into a mouthwatering selection of fresh seafood with an ice cold beer before getting on the ferry back to the mainland. Popular dishes here are the pig trotter bee hoon, oysters omelette, salted egg sotong and mud crab with black pepper.

DRINK Ah Ma Drink Stall

Stop by this iconic drink stall, housed in a distinctive blue structure in Jalan Jelutong, for a fresh coconut. Don't forget to say hi to the friendly Madam Ong Ang Kui, who has been running the stall for more than 20 years.

DO Soak in everything Pulau Ubin has to offer

There's plenty to do: whether you choose to cycle its unpaved trails, hike up hills for stunning views of abandoned granite quarries, kayak the circumference of the island, or dust off your binoculars out to watch the kingfishers and bulbul birds that inhabit the tidal flats and mangroves.  For more in-depth info, read our guide to Pulau Ubin  here .

STAY Set up camp

While you can't stay in a hotel on Pulau Ubin, you can embrace the island's wilderness and set up a tent at one of the three campsites on the island: namely Jelutong, Mamam, and Endut Senin. Mamam Campsite boasts uninterrupted views of the sea, with Malaysia in the background.

If you do just one thing... Wander around Chek Jawa Wetlands, one of Singapore's richest ecosystems. A 1.1km boardwalk runs along the coast and mangrove area, giving visitors a chance to get closer to nature. After which, climb up a 20-metre-tall viewing tower for a 360-degree panorama of the island.

Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru

Cross the causeway via public transport or in the comfort of your car from Woodlands Checkpoint and you'll find yourself in the heart of Johor Bahru. The JB immigration building is directly connected to City Square Mall, where you can find brands such as H&M and Uniqlo priced more affordable, thanks to the strong Singapore dollar. The surrounding area is also home to plenty of cool restaurants and cafés where you can while the day away.

EAT The Replacement – Lodge and Kitchen

Out of all the cafés we've been to in Johor Bahru, The Replacement – Lodge and Kitchen undoubtedly serve the best food. Try the soft shell crab bao and the piping hot churros served with your choice of dip: there's salted caramel, dark chocolate, Nutella hazelnut and salted egg yolk to choose from.

DRINK Bev C

Johor Bahru isn't exactly known for its buzzy bar scene so swap the booze out for some caffeine instead. The house special at Bev C is the espresso ice cube: shots of coffee frozen into ice cubes served with some milk.

DO Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park

Just a half an hour drive from Johor Sentral lies Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park. The family-friendly theme park is home to the Supersurf, a waterslide with six high-speed lanes.

STAY Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru

Conveniently situated within JB Sentral, Doubletree by Hilton makes for the perfect base for exploring the rest of the city. The modern hotel also comes equipped with a swimming pool and gym to work off those calories from all that café hopping.

If you do just one thing... Queue up for buns baked in a charcoal oven at Hiap Joo Bakery. The banana cake at this old-school institution is unbeatable too – we guarantee you won't stop at one slice.

Iskandar Puteri

Iskandar Puteri

Home to some of Southeast Asia’s most epic theme parks like Legoland Malaysia and the Hello Kitty Indoor Theme Park, the thriving city of Iskandar Puteri is well worth crossing the causeway for – especially with the kids in tow.

EAT Spice Grill

Leave the touristy eats at the theme parks behind and make the drive down to Puteri Harbour instead. There, you'll be greeted by a host of better options such as Spice Grill, a stylish Indian restaurant that also has Western offerings.

DRINK Rock Bottom Kitchen & Bar

During happy hour, Rock Bottom Kitchen & Bar offers ridiculously affordable alcohol. Think $3 drinks and Bud Light draft, those are some truly rock-bottom prices.

DO Legoland Malaysia

Spend a day (or two) at Legoland Malaysia, the country's first international theme park. Ride the towering roller coasters or immerse yourself in a captivating 4D movie experience. Whichever the case, the impressive park promises to fascinate both children and adults alike.

STAY Hotel Jen Puteri Harbour

Aside from its incredibly convenient location, Hotel Jen at Puteri Harbour also offers a luxe infinity pool overlooking the glistening marina.

If you could do just one thing... Get more for less at Southeast Asia’s first luxury premium brand outlet – Johor Premium Outlets. The retail paradise houses internationally-renowned designer brands like Burberry, Coach and more.

Desaru

Spellbinding white sand beaches and azure waters render this relatively underrated island the perfect place for a fulfilling getaway. Simply hop on a 30-minute ferry ride from Changi Ferry Terminal to unravel the diverse offerings of Desaru – everything from ostrich farms and fruit plantations to posh golf courses.

EAT Jade Garden Seafood Corner

Treat yourself to a decadent seafood dinner at Jade Garden Seafood Corner – expect succulent lobster and bamboo clams, to name a few.

DRINK Beach Hut

Located within Lotus Desaru Beach Resort, this shack along the coast is a restaurant by day and bar by night. Grab a coconut or beers by the bottle.

DO The Els Club Desaru Coast

The sprawling club consists of 45 holes spread across two world-class golf courses. The stunning Ocean Course offers a range of customisable golf lessons at its academy for both serious golfers and beginners alike.

STAY Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast

Choose from one of the renowned hotels housed at Desaru Coast – a unique integrated destination resort that spans across a pristine beachfront. In particular, the Hard Rock Hotel entices with “rock star” treatment for vacationers and business travellers alike.

Sentosa

There's something for everyone at Sentosa. Whether you're a high roller looking to make your fortune, a thrill-seeker wanting to scream your heart out on a high-speed coaster, Michelin-star hunting foodie or a marine life enthusiast learning more about our ocean depths, the island has you covered. And if all that sounds a little too much for you, you can always park yourself at one of its three beaches and laze the day away.

Dine at Asia's first Michelin chef showcase experience. Every quarter, a different guest chef takes over the kitchen at Curate to present his or her award-winning menu.

DRINK Tanjong Beach Club

Dig your feet into the sand as you lounge by the beach with a tiki cocktail by Tanjong Beach Club. On Sunday, DJs turn the beachfront into a dance floor from the afternoon 'til late.

DO AJ Hackett

Here's one for the daredevils. Take a leap of faith by jumping from a height of 47m at AJ Hackett, Singapore's first bungy jumping facility.

STAY W Singapore Sentosa Cove

There are plenty of family-friendly hotels and luxe cabana stays on the island but for something sexier, we recommend making the trek out to W Singapore Sentosa Cove. Located in a quieter corner of the island, the hotel is perfect for couples looking for a little privacy.

If you do just one thing... Spend the day at Universal Studios Singapore, home to Battlestar Galactica and other fun rides that get the heart racing.

Batam

Take a ferry across the Singapore Strait to the charming Indonesian island of Batam. From serene beaches to an enthralling nightlight scene, this oft-overlooked island makes for a more than a decent getaway. Look past its sleazy reputation to unearth an array of exciting activities unique to the alluring destination.

EAT Golden Prawn 933

Head over to Golden Prawn 933 for a leisurely lunch that guarantees to satisfy. Serving up delectable plates of affordably priced freshly-caught seafood, the renowned restaurant proves that it’s worth the hype. Alternatively, join fellow tourists as they flock to the iconic A&W café for authentic root beer floats – creamy vanilla soft serve atop fizzy root beer.

DRINK Brewsky & Co

Pay a visit to one of the island’s reputable microbreweries. Brewsky & Co has delicious cocktails and great bar games as the cherry on top.

DO Batam Cable-ski Park

If you’re looking for adventure, choose from a variety of exhilarating water sports. In particular, opt to go jet skiing at Batam Cable-ski Park. Prices start from $25 for a one-hour pass but opt for the full-day pass that's priced at $65.

STAY Montigo Resorts The distinctive white and blue colour palette of Montigo Resorts’ façade affords you the luxury of experiencing a slice of Santorini without having to catch the dreaded 17-hour flight. If that wasn’t enough to warrant your stay, the posh villa-style resort boasts an exclusive private pool with unparalleled views of the surrounding Nongsa waters.

If you do just one thing… Relish a fragrant slice of one of Indonesia’s famed traditional specialties, Kueh Lapis – an indulgent layered cake – from the revered Layers Batam. Its range of conveniently located outlets include Nagoya Hill Mall and Batam Center Point.

Bintan

Long established as an upscale playground for the spendthrift, the idyllic archipelago is spoiled with pristine beaches and picturesque landscapes. Yet, hidden amidst an abundance of high-end luxury resorts are rustic old-school fishing villages that intrigue with their grit. It’s nice to know that a mere 50-minute ferry ride from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal can transport you to a versatile and multi-faceted holiday destination like Bintan.

EAT Nasi Padang

Experience Indonesian-style Nasi Padang in its most authentic form as you tuck into the generous servings at Pujasera Food Centre’s Lamak Basamo or Rumah Makan Sederhana in Tanjung Pinang.

Touted as Bintan’s veteran nightclub, Silk promises a night to remember as you immerse yourself in live band music with a jazzy beverage in hand.

DO Air Adventure

Learn to fly at Air Adventure, a flying club at Lagoi Bay. But if all that sounds a little too ambitious for you then opt for a 20-minute ride on a seaplane that will accord you stunning views of the island. There's even an option to purchase a video recording of your flight so you can take your memories home.

STAY Banyan Tree Bintan

Tucked away in a verdant rainforest, the lavish villas of Banyan Tree Bintan offer breathtaking views of the South China Sea and a tranquil atmosphere. In line with its luxurious setting, hotel staff provide impeccably intuitive service catering to every need and want.

Singapore stands today as one of the world’s biggest tourist destinations and, as a modern city-state, has so many fun attractions and things to see and do.

There are so many tourist attractions in Singapore, you’ll need a few days just to fully explore the city. From Sentosa Island to Marina Bay Sands , you will never run out of things to do.

Top 10 Best Things To Do in Singapore, Tourist Attractions & What to Do Map

Start your holiday by visiting Marina Bay Sands. This integrated resort consists of a hotel, casino , shopping mall , convention centre and museum and is one of the most visited icons in Singapore . Perfectly positioned to overlook the city from one side and the sea from the other, the view from either side of the hotel is certainly spectacular.

From here, walk over to Gardens by the Bay , which is a unique attraction most recognised for its Giant Super Trees : there are 12 ‘enhanced’ trees composed of actual living plants made superior through a steel base. Amongst the best attractions in the Garden are its two uniquely shaped dome conservatories called the “ Flower Dome ” (purposely called so because it is in the shape of a lotus flower) and the “ Cloud Forest ” (which gives visitors a different kind of “forest” experience).

Head down to Sentosa Island to see its great attractions; including the world-famous Universal Studios . With 24 movie-themed rides and attractions, it’s not surprising why Universal Studios Singapore is one of the best and most visited theme parks in Southeast Asia.

Thrill seekers both young and old will be kept entertained by the Universal Studios’ unique adventure rides and shows based on Hollywood Blockbuster Hits; like Shrek, Transformers, Madagascar, Jurassic Park and so much more!

Make sure to visit the Jurong Bird Park , Singapore Zoo , Night Safari and the Singapore flyer , just to name a few. There are so many things to do in Singapore that makes it a great place to holiday with family and friends.

Seletar Club Road BlueSG - Singapore Road Trip

Having a car makes all the difference when you’re exploring new spots all over the island.

For those who have a driving license but don’t own a car, don’t scrap your road trip plans just yet. Our trusty road trip companion for the day was a BlueSG car. BlueSG is Singapore’s first electric car-sharing service, with over 380 stations conveniently located island-wide.

User at BlueSG Terminal - Singapore Road Trip

Unlike traditional car rentals or sharing services where you rent it for an entire day, BlueSG gives you the flexibility to only rent it from point A to point B — when it’s needed. That means you won’t be paying for the rental while you’re hiking or having lunch and someone else can use the car during that time.

When you’re done, just look for one of the 380 charging stations around Singapore. No need to worry about parking or petrol (since it’s 100% electric) and the service is available 24 hours via the app!

BlueSG Mobile App - Singapore Road Trip

As a first-time BlueSG user, I found the experience pretty seamless. The mobile app lets you see the number of available parking spaces at each station, so you can plan your journey better! One thing that surprised me was the amount of legroom for a car so small — four people can definitely fit comfortably.

The Basic Plan starts at S$8/month (no commitment required) and charges by the minute. Charges are S$0.36/min — that’s S$10.80 for a 30-minute ride, which is pretty affordable.

BlueSG Car Drone Shot - Singapore Road Trip

We’ve explored Singapore quite a bit since the travel borders closed but driving through Singapore in good company truly put us in a whole different kind of holiday mood.

To further entice you to go on your own Singapore road trip, we’re offering an exclusive promo code! Use <BSGXTTI> to enjoy a free one-month BlueSG basic membership plan with 15 minutes of free rental (worth S$13.40). Valid till 12th September 2021 for new members only. You can sign up as long as you’re at least 20 years old and have a valid driving license for a minimum of one year!

12 BEST Things to Do in Katong, Singapore [2024 Guide]

Alesha and Jarryd

  • Last Updated: February 5, 2024

Singapore isn’t just a transport hub – it has so many great things to offer! Why not consider staying in Katong, Singapore on your next visit?

Colourful Houses Things To Do In Katong Singapore

The tiny island-nation of Singapore has grown from being a traditional fishing port to one of the most economically-charged and vibrant countries in Asia.

It’s strategic location and amazing airport has also resulted in Singapore being one of the best transport hubs in the entire world. For this reason millions of tourists spend at least a few days in the country every year.

Singapore has a few main attractions that most people want to see, so they end up staying near them. But for those that want to get more out of their visit, we recommend you stay in the funky Katong neighbourhood.

As local as local can be in a city filled with business and tourism, the amount of things to do in Katong, excellent places to eat and amazing luxury hotels to stay in ensure that it is one of the best neighbourhoods to be based in on your next trip to Singapore.

Local Streets In Katong, Singapore.

Live Like A Local

Get away from the hustle and bustle, enjoy the food, visit sri senpaga vinayagar temple, take a stroll in east coast park, pick up some souvenirs at rumah bebe, learn about history at the eurasian heritage centre, go back in time katong antique house, 328 katong laksa, quentin eurasian restaurant, eat at the local hawkers stalls at marine parade market, some other ones we never got to try but heard a lot about, bonuses of staying at village hotel katong, 3 reasons why you should stay in katong.

Most people look to Chinatown or the area around the Marina Bay Sands to stay when they visit Singapore. They usually assume that these two popular areas are the only neighbourhoods worth staying in.

Totally understandable – we did the same when we first travelled to Singapore .

However for those who prefer to try something unique and would rather break away from the norm, there are plenty of great reasons why you should stay in Katong, Singapore.

Katong is one of the coolest neighbourhoods in Singapore, with a mix of high rise apartments and hotels sitting next to quaint, traditional houses.

Because relatively few tourists choose to stay in Katong, it’s has a more authentic feel about it as you walk around the streets.

You get a real good feel for the awesome little cafes, bars and restaurants that are dotted around the place, and can see how many Singaporeans would visit the area to do their shopping.

You won’t find the high-end luxury stores and tech shops here, like on Orchard Road, and you won’t get hundreds of people taking selfies next to the Merlion. Instead you’ll find life as it is for the majority of Singaporeans – living like a local.

Make sure to stay at least a week as there are many places to visit in Katong.

Live Like A Local Things To Do In Katong Singapore

An extra benefit of ‘living like a local’ in Katong means it’s much quieter than some of the other neighbourhoods around the city.

Katong is so peaceful and quiet, that sometimes we had to stop and ask ourselves, “Are we still in Singapore?”

One day we decided to just walk the empty, tree-lined streets and soak up the atmosphere. Compared to the busyness you get around downtown, it was awesome to make the most of Katong.

The best thing is that it’s easily connected via bus and MRT to the rest of the city, so you can go and do all your sightseeing by day (or night), and return to chill for a few hours when you want.

This may be the best (well at the very least the tastiest) reason to stay in Katong – It just has so many incredible food options!

Singapore is a foodie’s paradise, and the hawker centres are famous the world over as the best places to get a cheap eat.

When you visit Katong you have some of the best hawker centres in the country at your doorstep, and the options just keep on rising from there!

Indian, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Malay, Italian, Mexican, no matter which country’s cuisine you feel like sampling you’ll have a good chance at finding it in Katong, Singapore.

Even with all those international selections though, don’t miss out on trying the best local dishes as well such as seafood laksa ( find out where to get that below) .

Food is definitely one of the main Katong attractions and an integral part to get the full Katong sightseeing experience!

Top Things To Do In Katong, Singapore

It might not have the big ticket items Singapore is known for, such as the zoo and the Gardens by the Bay, but this is where the local atmosphere in Katong really picks up its game.

For a small neighbourhood there are a surprising amount of things to do in Katong, and you could easily spend a day (or more) checking them all out.

This Hindu temple dedicated to Garnesha and is an attraction not to miss in Singapore.

Its history dates back to the 1850’s, when a statue of Lord Vinayagar was found by the side of the pond near this site. It was sitting next to a Chempaka tree (Senpaga in Tamil), and that is how the name came about.

You will be draw in by this beautifully decorated temple from the road. There is two large Dwarapalakas standing 9 feet tall, each acting as guardians of the entrance. Visiting this temple at anytime of day you will feel a sense of peace and calmness.

There are many unique features to notice about this temple: Gopuram designed on the Chola traditions, the roof designed to see the Gopuram and the Vinayagar Vimanam, gold Covered Vimanam (the biggest in Singapore), kamlapaatham (a specially sculptured granite foot stone at entrance), four main granite pillars with 8 sculptures in each pillar and Senpaga Vinayagar, standing over 5 feet tall and designated as the largest sanctum Vinayagar in Asia.

Before going please respect the temple, obey the guidelines and of course the dress code.

You can hire a bicycle, take a run or stroll along the well manicured paths. With cafes along the way you can stop and enjoy the view over the Singapore Straits.

There are plenty of amenities to enjoy as well, from barbecues to picnic tables by the water to children’s playgrounds that entertain all members of the family.

It does get busy on the weekends (especially on Sunday) so keep that in mind when you visit.

This little local shop is full of many beautiful Peranakan tableware and utensils. It was definitely an experience walking in and feeling like you have gone back in time to the old days.

People come to this store for the stunning batiks and large varieties of baju kebaya worn by the Nyonya. If you are looking for a real local gift, then look no further. There is a lot to choose from.

This is not just a souvenir store. You can also buy homemade Peranakan food (savoury and sweet) from here too. Try something sweet like nyonya kuih or a savoury dish like a yummy curry puff.

Now that you know what to see in Katong, we compiled a list of accommodations and eateries to help you plan the most of your travel to Katong!

Best Places To Eat In Katong

Like we said in our ‘what to do in Katong’, one of the best things about this neighbourhood is the food! Make sure you set aside a lot of time (and space in your stomach) to stroll the streets enjoying the best places to eat in Katong!

Wow …… that is all we have to say. This place has the reputation as having one of the best laksas in Singapore, and we agree!

When the place has a queue out the door and everyone is eating the same dish, you know it’s going to be good. We wandered in, not knowing it was famous (Gordon Ramsey ate there once), and were blown away with the food.

If you haven’t tried seafood laksa (noodles in coconut milk-based curry broth) then let this place be your first time. Wash it down with some fresh lemon juice – Delicious! We will definitely return here when we are back in Katong.

328 Katong Laksa Restaurant Singapore

This is a popular restaurant if you would like to try some Eurasian food. The portions are very generous so don’t go crazy ordering every dish on the menu.

You have a choice of air-conditioned seating, or out on the verandah. We cannnot comment on the food as we unfortunately went there on the day it was closed. We will be sure to catch it next time.

The portions aren’t huge but the food is tasty. Local dishes start from SGD$3, coffee is $1, and cold bottled beer is $6. Try some local dishes like rojak or mee siam.

Where To Stay In Katong

Katong has a decent selection of accommodation options, ranging from cheap backpacker hostels right up to 5-star luxury hotels.

Accommodation in Singapore is not cheap, but if you can afford to add a few more dollars to your budget for somewhere to stay you can get out of living in a small hostel and find yourself something nice and comfortable.

Lobby Village Hotel Katong Singapore

Best Hotel In Katong – Village Hotel Katong

We love hotels that have character, and the Village Hotel Katong simply oozes with it! From the moment you walk into the lobby your met with traditional Peranakan design and gorgeous lighting, and the theme stays throughout the hotel.

Even though we arrived late at night we checked in and experienced the famous Singaporean hospitality from the lovely receptionist, Ivory.

She gave us all the information we would need, without being over-the-top, and then surprised us by saying because the hotel was at high capacity and our room was allocated earlier that day to someone else, we had been upgraded to a suite. What a welcome!

Our room was simply enormous, and we couldn’t believe when we walked in to find a separate bedroom, living area, kitchenette, dining room and a giant bathroom!

The bed was king-size and felt like sleeping on a cloud. We had a large TV in the bedroom, but to be honest we never turned it on.

Bedroom Suite Village Hotel Katong

Bathroom was spacious and had enough room to have both of us in there at the same time if need be.

The living area was a perfect spot to relax after a big day exploring, with a large couch, armchairs, coffee table and lots of light.

If there wasn’t such excellent food options around Katong we would have made better use of the kitchenette area, but if you were planning on being in town long-term it would be a huge asset to have it.

We knew we were being spoilt by being in a suite, so we poked our head into a few other rooms that people had checked out of to make a comparison.

Even the standard rooms were spacious, and we would have been more than happy to stay in one of those as well!

The reason that this place is the best hotel in Katong doesn’t end in the room though…

Suite Village Hotel Katong Singapore

Village Hotel Katong is part of the Stay Far East Hospitality Group, and being the experts in high-end and boutique accommodation in Singapore they have established quite a few excellent bonuses for staying in their hotels.

It starts with the breakfast, which is a huge spread featuring cuisine that every nationality would enjoy. There’s the typical western style, with made-to-order omelettes, baked beans, bacon, sautéed mushrooms and all the usual staples.

For those that love the Asian breakfasts you’ll find different types of noodles, stir fries, rice and soups. And if you prefer your breakfast light, there’s heaps of mueslis, cereals, breads and jams. Oh, and don’t forget the excellent coffee too!

If you’re lucky enough to have their Peranakan Club Package (available with their higher-end rooms or as a separate upgrade) you’ll get access to the private lounge with snacks, tea, coffee and drinks available free of charge 24 hours a day.

There was a free mobile handset with unlimited local calls and data that you could take with you when you’re out and about around town. This was a really cool feature, and something we think more hotels should have.

What really topped it for us though was that members of the Peranakan Club are given airport lounge passes. This meant we could spend a few hours at Singapore Changi Airport sitting in absolute comfort with free food, drinks and alcoholic beverages at our beck and call.

Just to top things off Stay Far East offers free airport transfers between Changi International Airport and all of their hotels.

We had a chance to chat to the marketing director about some of the hotel’s future plans, and we really loved how they are embracing the ‘live like a local’ mindset.

In the coming months they are developing an app to help visitors find some of the hidden gems of Singapore and creating a food tour that will take you to more of the secret hawker centres that are off the beaten track. Keep an eye out for these developments!

We absolutely loved our stay at Village Hotel Katong, and definitely recommend you check it out on your next visit to Singapore.

Thanks for the great information on Katong. We are 3 ladies of 70+ years who will be in Singapore for 10 days in November this year. We have booked accommodation in Katong and your information indicates that our decision to stay in a more ‘local’ area is the right one.

You are welcome. We hope you had a great trip. Thank you 🙂

I just arrived in Katong to travel Singapore first time. I worried a bit because of the distance from the city center. I had no idea what kind of this area is, and what to do here. Having a lunch , I googled about this place and your writing was poped up. What a perfect ! It sounds like must-visit place and where I’d like to feel real Singapore and local vibe. I feel good now, thank you for your story. It is great.

So glad we could help. We hope you had a great trip. 🙂

I live in Singapore, and never knew there was so much more to see in Katong (apart from laksa)! You covered this small part of Singapore really well:-)

Hi Gary, thank you so much. it is a beautiful neighbourhood to explore and the laksa is delicious. Hope you get out there for a day of exploring soon. 🙂

G’day, This article has wetted my appetite for Singapore. A friend of mine used to go there in the 1980’s and is wanting to go back. She is no longer ambient and travels in a travel scooter. Thus, could you tell me what the power options are there please? We live in NSW Australia and use 240 power.

Hi, Singapore is a great place to travel. The electricity in Singapore is 230 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second. If you travel to Singapore with a device that does not accept 230 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter. Hope that helps.

Wow those pastel houses are so Insta worthy! I’m visiting Singapore next year and this got me excited!

Katong is a beautiful area to stay. Hope you get to visit soon, 🙂

I stayed in Chinatown last time I was in Singapore- but I’ve heard good things about this neighborhood and will look at staying there next time I visit.

Definitely check out Katong next time. We will have to check out Chinatown. We have never stayed in that location. Happy travels

This is such a great neighbourhood – I love the architecture and colour. I would not have thought about staying here before!

The buildings are so beautiful there Katie. Definitely check out this neighbourhood next time. 🙂

I love how colorful the street view is in Katong! This makes me want to go back to Singapore right now. It is seriously one of our favorite Asian cities we’ve ever been! I love the location and how spacious the rooms are at Village Hotel Katong, we will check that out on our next visit!

It is now our favourite neighbourhood in Singapore. It is so gorgeous. Definitely check it out next time. 🙂

The easy access to places like Melaka and Kuala Lumpur, a three- and four-hour drive respectively from the Woodlands Causeway, provides affordable holidays.

The 110kmh speed limit on most stretches of Malaysia's North-South Highway, and scenic roads like the Terengganu coastal highway, also allow keen drivers and bikers to stretch the performance of their vehicles, within legal limits, while exploring new places.

But the Covid-19 pandemic has put the brakes on road trips north.

So The Straits Times took the road less travelled - a 200km drive around Singapore.

In this guide, the trip we took - in a Mini Convertible - is divided into four parts, which can be completed separately or in a day.

Starting at the Seah Im carpark near VivoCity, motorists can journey to the west, to the Jurong industrial estate, and then to Kranji in the north.

The route skirts the perimeter of the Central Catchment area before heading east to Punggol and Changi. The drive ends at Mount Faber.

1. Morning drive (77km) - Industrial Jurong and the scenic Kranji countryside

The first stop is South Buona Vista Road, which is known for its winding turns.

Although the road is referred to as "99 turns", it is an exaggeration as there are only 11 turns.

For history buffs, there is a historical marker in Kent Ridge Park off South Buona Vista Road worth stopping for.

It describes the epic battle in Pasir Panjang during World War II, where Lieutenant Adnan Saidi and the Malay Regiment fought the Japanese invaders from Feb 13 to 14, 1942. The national hero died as a result of the fight.

From South Buona Vista Road, the route takes drivers through the Jurong industrial estate, which has powered Singapore's economic growth since independence.

The highlight of the drive is the construction site of Tuas Mega Port. When completed in 2040, it will be the world's largest fully automated terminal.

After Tuas, the next stop is the "40 lamp posts", or Lim Chu Kang Road, which is Singapore's "spare runway".

The road is flanked by the Lim Chu Kang cemeteries and Tengah Airbase. Since 1986, the Republic of Singapore Air Force has turned it into a temporary aircraft runway seven times for fighter jets to take off and land. The long and wide road is favoured by street racers for illegal car and motorbike races.

The next stop is Jalan Bahtera, possibly Singapore's last unpaved and unlit road. It leads to Sarimbun Beach, where the first wave of Japanese soldiers landed on Feb 8, 1942, marking the start of the World War II battle for Singapore.

The route also covers the Lim Chu Kang and Kranji areas which are set to be transformed into Singapore's food bowl, as the country ramps up its drive to produce more food locally as a buffer against global supply shocks. Some 390ha of land will be redeveloped under a masterplan to create a high-tech agri-food cluster.

The lunch stop is Bollywood Veggies, one of a handful of farm-themed eateries in the Kranji area. It is famous for its signature nasi lemak and dessert.

Insider tip: There is no public toilet along this 77km route.

2. Early afternoon drive (56km) - Exploring the Central Catchment area

The three stops in this segment are at the fringes of the Central Catchment area, with attractions that will appeal to nature and history buffs.

The first stop is Rifle Range Road, which peels off from Dunearn Road. It is frequented by those visiting the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officers' club, otherwise known as Temasek Club.

After the club, the road cuts into the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, one of few public roads inside the reserve.

Across the other end of the Central Catchment area from Rifle Range Road is Old Upper Thomson Road.

Grand Prix drivers raced on this road between 1961 and 1973. It was where the Malaysian Grand Prix and Singapore Grand Prix were held. A 3km stretch of Old Upper Thomson Road is now a one-way street to accommodate a park connector.

Insider tip: Slow down at this stretch. The Grand Prix circuit claimed the lives of seven racers over 11 years the races were held there.

In January 2008, a Mitsubishi Lancer careened off the road when approaching the Devil's Bend - a sharp 300-degree hairpin turn - and slammed into a wall of trees, causing the death of two passengers.

In addition, be careful about wildlife such as macaques in Rifle Range Road and Old Upper Thomson Road. Both are narrow roads between forest fragments which wildlife cross frequently.

The third stop is the rocket tower and the famous casuarina tree at Upper Seletar Reservoir. It is an opportunity to take a photo or selfie at one of Singapore's most Instagrammed trees.

3. Late afternoon drive (39km) - Exploring two quirky spots

This segment explores two quirky landmarks.

The first, a coffee break at the Soek Seng 1954 Bicycle Cafe, which is hidden in the Seletar Aerospace Park. Diners can get a view of the Seletar Airport runway and parked planes, including private jets.

tourist places near sg highway

The second stop is the "UFOs" in Tampines Road. The "UFOs" or "giant spinning tops" are storage tanks to hold Newater, which is water recycled from waste and treated to drinking quality.

Insider tip: There is no carpark near the "UFOs", so look out for a runoff area opposite the Tian Teck Keng temple to park and take photos. The stretch of road hosts several large temples and a funeral parlour.

4. Night drive (23km) - Night drive through the city

The dinner stop is along Changi Coastal Walk, in the Belly View Cafe in the National Service Resort and Country Club. Diners can check out the flight paths of planes landing and taking off from the Changi Airport, and soak in views of the sun setting over the horizon.

tourist places near sg highway

The eatery serves affordable local zi char dishes such as fried rice and prawn-paste chicken. It is not the best zi char in Singapore, but it is definitely the zi char with one of the best views.

After dinner, the route takes drivers to Sheares Bridge for a view of the Marina Bay skyline, Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay Sands, Bay East Garden and the Supertrees of Gardens by the Bay.

tourist places near sg highway

The drive continues through major Shenton Way landmarks like the Marina Bay Financial Centre, Lau Pa Sat and Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) Building, and Keppel Road landmarks like the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station.

The journey ends at Mount Faber, which is near Seah Im carpark where it all started.

Insider tip: Head to carpark B for the best view of Sentosa. Parking is free.

In January 2003, then Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad made a quip directed at Singapore drivers: "If you like, drive on our roads, which are quite long, in Ferraris - they have Ferraris, you know - because in Singapore you can't drive very far."

While Singapore's roads may not be as long and as varied as Malaysia's, there are still ample routes to keep both keen and casual travellers in gear, and little known out-of-the-way places to entertain explorers.

How to Spend Perfect 4 Days in Singapore

Photo: Victor Gracia

We knew we were going to have a great time in Singapore from the start. On the way from Changi airport, we were mesmerized by the scenery that unfolded before eyes. The lush vegetation and the tall trees along the highway invited us to follow along, the colourful buildings that caught our eyes as we were getting closer to the city and once we entered the city, we kept seeing such breathtaking architecture around us, it was probably the best airport ride we’ve ever had!

Singapore’s airport is one of the busiest airports in the world (not to mention one of the best), so many tourists plan a stopover in Singapore, some stay less than 24 hours while others plan a 1-day or 2-day itinerary. However, there are so many things to do and see in Singapore that 1 or 2 and even 3  days are simply not enough. It is one of the most culturally diverse cities we’ve ever been to, with gorgeous architecture, green parks, attractions for kids and so much more. That’s why we’ve planned for you this perfect 4-day itinerary for Singapore with our favourite highlights and attractions in this gorgeous city. Before we start talking about our 4-day itinerary for Singapore, let’s cover the basics – some things to know and why should you even consider visiting Singapore.

Things to Know about Singapore

Singapore is a city-state – together with Monaco and Vatican City, there are only three city-states in the world.

Singapore has approximately 5.6 million residents.

There are four official languages in Singapore: English, Malay, Mandarin-Chinese, and Tamil.

Singapore has the highest religious diversity in any country according to the Pew Research Center .

Singapore’s nickname is the Garden City thanks to its tree-lined streets and many parks all over the city.

Singapore earned its independence as the Republic of Singapore in 1965.

According to a British study, Singaporeans are the fastest walkers in the world! (on average about 6.15 km in an hour).

Other than the mainland, Singapore also has 63 tiny islands (most of them are uninhabited).

Singapore is one of the smallest countries in the world – only 682.7 square kilometres.

Chewing gum isn’t allowed in Singapore unless you have a doctor’s prescription. Tourists are allowed to bring 1-2 packs with them.

All buildings must not be higher than 280 meters.

Singapore is the third-most densely populated country in the world

Why Should Singapore Be on Your Bucket List?

It is a convenient stop when flying long distances.

There are so many attractions and things to do in Singapore in close proximity.

Singapore is one of the cleanest and safest countries in the world

Singapore has cultural diversity that is hard to compete with.

Singapore’s airport is constantly ranked as the best airport in the world.

We did not expect to love Singapore as much as we did. Anyone who loves culture, history, architecture and food is going to have the time of his life here. Due to Singapore’s cultural melting pot, while passing through Singapore’s various neighborhoods, you feel as if you are transported to another country. One day you might have a little taste of India and on the next day, you are visiting the Sultan Mosque. You can have the best Indian, Chinese or Malay food you’ve ever had in the same block. And another thing, the taxi drivers in Singapore are some of the nicest ones in the world. So let’s start planning your perfect 4 days in Singapore

explore Kampong Glam neighborhood in Singapore

Singapore 4 Day Itinerary - Our Guide to the Best Attractions

4 day singapore itinerary - day 1, discover the famous attractions in singapore around marina bay, gardens by the bay.

Since this is probably the most famous tourist attraction in Singapore, we recommend arriving early so you’d have a chance to escape the crowds. Gardens by the Bay is located just next to the famous Marina Bay Sands. It’s known all over the world for its 50-meter-tall artificial trees . The outside gardens are free but to enter the Flower Dome (the largest glass greenhouse in the world), the Cloud Forest (inside you’ll find a 35-metre-tall mountain covered in lush vegetation and a huge indoor waterfall) and go up the Supertree Grove , you’d have to pay a fee. The atmosphere is totally different during the day and during the night when you can catch the daily light show (for free) at 7:45 pm and 8:45 pm .

Insider tips: If you intend to visit more than one attraction, buy the combo ticket. When visiting the Cloud Forest – it’s a great opportunity to take a picture of the Supertree Grove from the highest floor. To take a photo of some of the best views in Singapore, walk to Gardens by the Bay via Helix Bridge . Check out this Garden by the Bay map .

Address : 18 Marina Gardens Dr, Singapore 018953. Opening hours : the outer gardens: 5:00 am – 2:00 am (daily). The conservatories: 9:00 am – 9:00 pm (daily). Nearest MRT Station : Bayfront

Visit the Cool ArtScience Museum

Remember that strange-looking building you saw on your way to Gardens by the Bay? This is Singapore’s ArtScience Museum whose unique architecture was inspired by the lotus flower . This museum has a permanent exhibition (Future World: Where Art Meets Science) and changing exhibitions that combine art, science, culture and technology . It is a really fun activity for both kids and adults and one of the most unique and interesting museums in the world.  For more information about the ArtScience Museum exhibitions .

Address : 6 Bayfront Ave, Singapore 018974. Opening hours: 10:00 am – 7:00 pm (daily).

Marina Bay Sands Hotel and The Shoppers Mall

For lunch, there are plenty of options inside The Shoppers , the mall at Marina Bay Sands, and to be honest, it is such an extravagant mall with an indoor canal and boats, that you really should have a look and then continue to the next item on your Singapore 4 day itinerary.

Insider Tip: If you decide to have lunch here and you love dim sums, try the ones at Din Tai Fun.

Optional Itinerary Item: Enjoy the view from the observation deck at Marina Bay Sands. It is one of the best places to see Singapore from above, however, the admission fee is quite high and for us, the view is better from the ground where you can take a picture of the hotel itself. If you’re thinking about taking a dip in the famous infinity pool, you’d need to be guests of the hotel.

Address : 10 Bayfront Ave, Singapore 018956.

the Cloud Forest in Singapore

Visit Merlion Park – for the Best Views of Singapore Skyline

In Merlion Park you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the famous statue of the Merlion (a mythical creature with a lion’s head and the body of a fish), and even better, it is located on the waterfront exactly opposite Marina Bay Sands so here’s a great opportunity to take some pictures of the famous hotel.

Address : 1 Fullerton Rd, Singapore 049213. Nearest MRT Station: Raffles Place

Enjoy the Evening at Clarke Quay and the Riverside Area

Once the trading center of Singapore, nowadays it’s one of the most pleasant areas to spend a night out in Singapore. Cross the Read Bridge (Malacca Bridge), take some great pictures and enjoy the views of Singapore’s illuminated skyline and river and continue walking along the riverside promenade to escape the touristy atmosphere. Along the river, the vibes are more relaxed with a nice mixture of locals and tourists.  There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the Quays (pronounced “keys”) and after dinner, enjoy a drink at one of the trendy bars. This area was our favourite for an evening stroll.

Address : 3 River Valley Rd, Singapore 179024. MRT Station: Clarke Quay

It was a great experience to take pictures of the intricate artwork and the atmosphere inside was so festive and relaxing at the same time. One of our highlights in Singapore.

Eat Indian Food

We love Indian food and back home we don’t get many chances to have it, so this was the perfect solution for our Paneer and Naan cravings. Here are some of the best Indian restaurants in the area.

Why this is the best option for your singapore 4 day itinerary.

For nature lovers, this would be the perfect attraction for your last day in Singapore. The Southern Ridges are actually walking trails above Singapore’s parks. You can walk along this 10 km connecting trails and observe from above the different flora and fauna of Singapore’s various parks (Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, HortPark, Kent Ridge Park and Labrador Nature Reserve). It’s also a great spot to enjoy the views of Singapore.

Visit Sentosa Island

Why this is the best option tp warp up your 4 days in singapore.

You can spend a full day exploring all the attractions of Sentosa Island . Start with the Resorts World Sentosa where you’ll find Universal Studios (voted as the best amusement park in Asia), take a dip in the Adventure Cove Waterpark and learn more about the marine world in SEA Aquarium which happens to be one of the best aquariums in the world. Explore Singapore's Museums

Why this is the best option to warp up your 4 days in singapore.

History and art lovers would love to visit some of Singapore’s museums . Singapore might be one of the smallest countries in the world, nevertheless, it has an abundance of museums which you could visit to deepen your knowledge about the history and culture of Singapore. The mixture of cultures has created an impressive collection of museums which showcase the cultural diversity that has influenced and shaped modern Singapore.

For culture and history lovers:

National Museum of Singapore: It is one of the oldest museums where you can find various exhibits which depict the development and history of Singapore throughout the years.

Asian Civilization Museum:  You’ll find this impressive museum on the banks of Singapore River. It focuses on the development of the Asian continent and the different ethnic groups that arrived in Singapore.

Chinatown Heritage Museum: Located in Chinatown and there you’ll learn about the fascinating history of the Chinese immigrants and their influence on Singapore’s culture.

Indian Heritage Center: This museum showcases the history and culture of Indian immigrants. It is situated in Little India.

Malay Heritage Center: You’ll find this museum in Kampong Glam. It depicts the history of the residences who came from Malaysia.

Peranakan Museum: This museum is dedicated to the Peranakan culture (an ethnic group who has Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage). You’ll learn about the history, cultural practices, religion and food of this ethnic group.

For science and art lovers :

We have already mentioned the unique ArtScience Museum   but you might want to check these museums as well:

Singapore Art Museum: Located at an impressive building that used to be a Christian school in the 19th century, this museum offers an impressive exhibition of modern art from Singapore and East Asia.

MINT Museum of Toys: Here you’ll find a collection of toys from all over the world. It is a great attraction for families with kids.

Shopping at Orchard Road

The last option is for shopping lovers. When we are travelling, shopping is usually the last thing on our mind, however, Singapore has so many shopping centers and we’ve heard so much about Orchard Road, we simply had to have a look. We have no idea how all of Singapore’s shopping malls seem to always be full of people, but they are. Maybe it’s the hot and humid weather (that made us look for a cooler environment to escape the heat, every 2 hours or so) that keep these malls so busy. Anyways, you’ll find many shopping malls at Orchard Road that are suited for every pocket. Don’t miss ION Orchard Mall – you might not be able to afford the price tags of the shops inside but it’s an architectural wonder with an endless show of glimmering lights.

Getting around Singapore

It’s easy to get around Singapore. You can use the MRT system (very efficient and cheap), buses or taxis. If you plan to use public transportation extensively during your stay, you can buy a special EZ-Link card which will allow you unlimited travel for 1-3 days. We found the taxis to be relatively cheap and the drivers were extremely nice and helpful. Take some time to read the sticker on the window with all the rules and fines for mistreating a taxi driver in Singapore – a fun read that perhaps other countries should consider! For more information regarding getting around Singapore.  Insider Tip: If you’re looking for a great App to help you plan your transportation in Singapore, we loved Citymapper .

Where to Stay in Singapore

Singapore is a large city with many options for accommodation. You would want to choose where to stay in Singapore depending on your budget and interests. Shopaholics might consider staying around Orchid Road while culture lovers would prefer to stay closer to Kampong Glam and Little India . Another great option is to stay at Clarke Quay since it’s the best area to spend a great evening strolling around the promenade. Of course, if you can afford it, you can always stay at Marina Bay Sands and enjoy their famous infinity pool. We do have more options and detailed account of the best areas and the best hotels for every budget to stay in Singapore in our neighborhood guide.

Check out our detailed guide to Singapore Neighborhoods and the various hotel options for every budget!

What to Eat in Singapore

If you are a foodie at heart like we are, you are going to love Singapore! With different influences from different cuisines and cultures, you can probably satisfy all of your cravings in one of the many restaurants, cafes, street food stands or hawker centres in the city. We had the best meals here. Indian, Thai, Chinese, Malay, Persian and so much more. Moreover, you will also have great choices for vegetarians or health-food fanatics. From Satay to chilly crab and Nasi Lemak, or the favourite breakfast/snack, Kaya Toast – don’t forget to try a bit of everything. If you want some more tips about the dishes you must try in Singapore and where to find them, check out our Singapore foodie guide .

This is seriously the best itinerary I’ve seen for Singapore! I love Singapore so much and I’ve been a couple of times and you’ve mentioned things in here that I didn’t even know existed! Thank you! 🙂

Our Pleasure Nat! We just fell in love with Singapore. Can’t wait to get back and discover more!

Great article. I’ve never been to Singapore. Perhaps I should go because everyone says it’s awesome.

You definitely should Daniela! we did not expect to love Singapore so much but we did. And you never run out of things to do.

This is perfect! I’ll be in Singapore for a few days this summer (extending a layover for a few bonus days in a new place). Thanks for the recommendations. Great photos!

Lucky you Megan, you’re going to have a blast. Just prepare for insane humidity 😉

I had no idea Singapore is so religiously diverse! Looks like a fascinating place. Great post!

It truly is one of the most fascinating places we’ve ever been to!

I love your eye for photography! I feel like you always capture a unique perspective!! Super informative post too! Thank you for sharing!!

Our pleasure and thanks so much for your kind words! We really try to showcase any place we visit through our eyes, glad it is working 🙂

I had no idea that Singapore was one of these states in the world. I love how travel teaches us so much. looks like a must visit.

It is! If you have a chance, stop there for a few days, you won’t regret it!

Fastest walkers in the world! I better start picking it up lol This is so helpful as I would imagine I’ll fly through Singapore at some point living in New Zealand. The rules in Singapore are so good to know though! It’s amazing how different countries are and what people do in one part of the world is completely frowned on in another. ALWAYS good to know before hand eh ! The Orchid garden would absolutley be on my list to do! Thanks for sharing!

Our pleasure Lauren. And we used to consider ourselves as fast walkers 😉 Always good to learn about the local culture, customs and rules before you travel. Glad you’ve enjoyed our post!

Do you know why its not allowed with chewing gum?

Love the photographies in this article, great work 🙂

Thanks Ann for your kind words. Regarding chewing gum, originally vandals used to stuck chewing gum on the sensors of MRT trains and it also caused for a lot of litter in public places, so the ban was enforced.

I haven’t been to Singapore since I was little and we stopped over on the way to the UK. I remember the zoo, and how humid it was, and I bought a cassette for my new walkman (yes it was a long time ago!)

Well the humidity situation hasn’t changed, but there have been some changes in regards to the cassettes 😉 You’ll probably be amazed when you visit it now!

Great post! I absolutely LOVE Singapore. Every time I come back I discover new places to see, things to do, and don’t get me started on the food! Reading this post makes me want to plan another trip there right now!

Thanks so much, Merry. Great minds think alike 😉 We LOVE Singapore and can’t wait to go back there!

How to use public transportation to get around in Singapore

Know your Mass Rapid Transit from your public bus with this guide to getting around Singapore © mentatdgt / Shutterstock

Singapore ’s extensive public transportation system makes navigating this compact country a breeze.

While the cost of living makes Singapore one of the more expensive countries to visit, you might be able to save a little by learning how to make full use of its bus and subway networks. Stretch your budget and see more of this beautiful nation with our guide to getting around Singapore.

A metro train leaves a station with a cityscape behind

Get around Singapore easily on the MRT

Singapore’s subway system or the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is the most convenient way for travelers to get around cheaply and easily. Hopping on the MRT lets you avoid traffic jams, though platforms can get quite crowded during the morning and evening rush hours.

Navigating the MRT is quite straightforward for anyone used to a city metro. Currently, there are six MRT lines each marked with a distinct color, while stations are assigned numbers for easy identification – see the SMRT Journey Planner for the latest updates . Station signage and announcements are in the four official languages: English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil.

There are several smaller, driverless Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems that tourists are unlikely to encounter as they mostly serve residential neighborhoods. The Sentosa Express is a monorail line that connects from Vivocity Shopping Centre in Harbourfront to the offshore island of Sentosa.

See the sights on a budget with the public bus network

The public bus network is another cheap option for getting around Singapore. While you may get stuck in peak-hour traffic jams, taking the bus is a more scenic way to enjoy the journey. It can also offer direct connections on routes that may require multiple changes on the MRT.

Singapore’s bus network is extensive and covers most of the island, with frequencies typically from 10–20 minutes. Bus stops have a unique ID number to help you identify where to stop, and most bus stops will have some route information at the bus stop itself. Google Maps is fairly accurate when planning a bus route; other apps you can use include Citymapper and MyTransport.sg on Android or Apple .

Opt for free shuttle buses

There are some private shuttle bus services that may be more convenient than public buses. Notable ones for tourists include the free shuttle bus lines that go around Sentosa Island , the weekend Kranji Farms Shuttle to explore Kranji Countryside, and the Mandai Khatib Shuttle that goes from Khatib MRT Station to the various parks at Mandai Wildlife Reserve.

Get a transport pass or tap in/out with a local app

To use the public buses or MRT in Singapore, you will need to purchase a stored value card ( EZ-Link Card ) available at all MRT stations and bus interchanges. Alternatively, the SimplyGo initiative allows you to use your contactless debit or credit card to pay for public transport without registration required – just tap your phone, smartwatch or physical card.

The fares for traveling via bus or MRT in Singapore are calculated based on distance so make sure to tap in and tap out to ensure you are charged the correct fare. There are no single-trip tickets for the MRT, but you can use cash to pay on the bus – you will need exact change to pay for your fare. A helpful online fare calculator can provide estimated fare prices.

For tourists, you can consider the Singapore Tourist Pass which allows for unlimited rides on the public bus and MRT for 1–3 days.

Shared bicycles are good for short distances

There are shared bicycles with multiple locations to pick up and return, like  SG Bike and Anywheel , that can be accessed via an app. This is a cheap and green alternative to taking the bus or MRT, but best for covering shorter distances as the bicycles are quite basic.

While cycling has gained popularity in recent years, most of Singapore’s roads have not been built to accommodate bicycles, which can make road cycling challenging for those unfamiliar with the local driving culture. Also, the tropical humidity and sudden downpours can make cycling in Singapore less than pleasant.

Many of Singapore’s green spaces and parks have bike rental kiosks. East Coast Park , Bukit Timah Nature Reserve , Marina Bay , Sentosa and Pulau Ubin are popular spots to explore on two wheels.

Ride in comfort via taxi

If time is of the essence or you’re traveling in the wee hours of the morning, taxis may be a more comfortable way to get around Singapore. Taxis do cost more but can be economical if traveling in a small group.

Official taxis in Singapore have a small electronic "Taxi" sign on the roof. You can hail a cab along the road in suburban areas, but taxis are only allowed to stop at proper taxi stands in the Central Business District area. They are particularly hard to find when it is raining.

Standard taxi fares are distance-based, but there are many add-on surcharges based on when you ride, where you hail the cab and whether there are tolls on the route taken. All taxis in Singapore use the meter so there’s no haggling involved, and cash is the preferred method of payment. Some cabs may accept credit card payments but there is an additional 10% service fee and tax.

Book a rideshare for convenience

Rideshares are an alternative to taxis if you have a local data plan and access to the apps. You can usually book and pay through the app, but you may also be subject to surge pricing during peak hours.

Grab is the largest rideshare company in Singapore – there is no Uber or Lyft here. Other players in the market include Gojek , TADA and carpooling app Ryde . Taxis can be booked via Zig or via the rideshare apps.

There's no real need to drive in Singapore

Given Singapore’s small size and good public transport network, there is no real need for tourists to rent a car to explore the city . Most of the main sights are in the downtown area and well connected by MRT or bus, and for more out-of-the-way spots, calling a taxi or rideshare is much easier and economical than renting a car where you have to factor in the costs of fuel, road tolls and expensive parking.

There are car-sharing options like BlueSG , TribeCar or GetGo that you can consider if you really must drive – note that vehicles in Singapore drive on the left side of the road.

A lovely arc of golden sand with a few boats docked in the ocean. A city skyline rises in the distance

Sail to Singapore’s outer islands on the public ferry

You can charter a private boat to explore Singapore’s offshore islands, but the public ferry is the cheapest way to access them. To get to Pulau Ubin in the northeast, head to Changi Point Ferry Terminal where there are small bumboats that take you to the island in just 10 minutes.

If you want to explore the Southern Islands ( St John’s Island , Lazarus Island and Kusu Island ), Singapore Island Cruise and Marina South Ferries both run regular ferry services from Marina South Ferry Terminal.

Accessible transportation in Singapore

Most of the buses and trains in Singapore have spaces and ramps equipped for strollers, wheelchairs and personal mobility aids, as well as marked priority seats for those who need them. Train stations and bus stops are barrier-free with at least one entrance that is accessible, and staff are trained to provide assistance if necessary.

For taxis, there are specialized transportation services with wheelchair-accessible vehicles and medically trained drivers such as Strides Care and Caring Fleet .

Top 8 Scenic Driving Routes to Explore with the Attrage

Take your appreciation of our city state up a notch with a joyride around the island to discover new scenic spots. Join us as we explore eight of the best driving routes in Singapore.

Singapore’s 9,000 kilometres of roads and expressways takes up about 12 per cent  of the country’s land area. Despite the small percentage, there’s bound to be some roads that are more scenic than others. Just like the Mitsubishi Attrage, size does not matter when it comes to creating new memories on the road. Island exploration just got better thanks to the Attrage’s fuel efficiency and new cruise control feature. Longer drives are also more comfortable with the Attrage’s class-leading interior space that makes it roomy for everyone including the passengers in the backseat. In our quest to find hidden gems, we asked car enthusiasts for their favourite driving routes and took the Attrage down to these spots ourselves—we weren’t disappointed. Here’s what we found!

Mandai Road

tourist places near sg highway

We were treated to a scenic drive along Mandai Road as we made our way to Upper Seletar Reservoir Park. The drive up to the Seletar Rocket Tower is as enjoyable as the destination itself—the road is lined by majestic trees that form a green canopy over the road and offers an unblocked view of Upper Seletar Reservoir. Did you know that Mandai Road is one of Singapore’s oldest carriageways? It was constructed in 1855 and is now one of five Heritage Roads gazetted by the National Parks Board. We took Mandai Road Track 7 on the way back which offered equally stunning and tranquil views.

East Coast Park Service Road

tourist places near sg highway

A long stretch of road without any traffic lights in Singapore? Sounds too good to be true, yet we found it as we drove down East Coast Park Service Road. Not only is the stretch lined with lush greenery, it offers scenic views of East Coast Park. On days where the weather is a little more forgiving, you can even roll the windows down to enjoy a breezy drive. Get the full East Coast Park experience by heading down in the late afternoon then finding a spot to catch the sunset at Bedok Jetty or near carpark F2.

Bayfront Avenue

tourist places near sg highway

Bayfront Avenue is one of the newer roads (it opened in April 2010) in Singapore and it’s clear to see why it quickly become one of the most scenic routes on the island. The short but memorable road took us through many of Singapore’s famed attractions like the Esplanade, Fullerton Hotel, Singapore Flyer, Helix Bridge, Gardens by the Bay, and the iconic Marina Bay Sands. Bayfront Avenue also takes you over the Singapore River where we were treated to a picture-perfect view of the country’s city skyline. The drive is enjoyable no matter the time of day—the city night lights are just as rewarding as seeing the attractions in daylight.

tourist places near sg highway

Next, we went for a little ‘offshore’ adventure Ocean Way at Sentosa. Being away from the hustle and bustle of the mainland certainly has its perks—no high-rise buildings in sight, just blue skies and calming trees, perfect if you’re looking for a tranquil drive. The other roads in the area are for residents only, but you can still catch glimpses of the beautiful and modern houses and apartments at Sentosa Cove. The road also took us to Quayside Isle which was full of eateries and certainly delighted the foodies in us. Ocean Way is at the eastern tip of Sentosa and starts after the roundabout at Cove Avenue and ends when you hit W Singapore Sentosa Cove.

South Buona Vista Road

tourist places near sg highway

As far as challenging routes go, South Buona Vista Road tops most lists. This road is famously known within the driving community as ‘99 Bends’, a direct translation of its Hokkien name. Despite its name, this winding road only has 11 turns. We entered from the National University of Singapore and drove downhill to West Coast Highway (watch out for those hairpin turns!). Surrounded by lush mature trees, this green tunnel is also one of five Heritage Roads in Singapore. Up for a nature adventure on foot? Take a breather at Kent Ridge Park to explore one of its hiking trails.

Mount Faber Loop/Mount Faber Road

tourist places near sg highway

This peaceful one-way road loops around Singapore’s second highest hill and has a number of steep uphill and downhill sections. It takes you higher and higher until you reach Faber Peak where you will be rewarded with an amazing bird’s eye view of the surrounding neighbourhoods and a panoramic view of the coastline and Sentosa in the distance. You can enter from Mount Faber Road (one way) or via Pender Road. This route is also one those that have equally mesmerising views at night as it does in the day.

Arcadia Road

tourist places near sg highway

Arcadia Road is another road conserved under the National Parks Board’s Heritage Road Scheme. The 918-metre road was a sight to behold as we drove down its length, admiring the magnificent rain trees that form a comforting canopy of green. It’s also quite secluded so you may even find yourself the only vehicle driving down this road. The thick vegetation made the quiet route a welcome respite and almost made us forget that the busy Pan Island Expressway (PIE) runs just parallel to it.

Fairways Drive

tourist places near sg highway

Just a short drive away from Arcadia Road lies another scenic gem that is Fairways Drive. The green fields that surround the road is a hotspot for couples taking their pre-wedding photographs thanks to the area’s lack of road traffic and unrestricted nature view. There are also very few traffic lights which made for a smooth, relaxing ride. You can drive all the way in and pop by the Bukit Timah Saddle Club to catch some horses in action or stop by the adjacent Rider’s Cafe for a caffeine boost before hitting the road again.

CAR IN FOCUS - MITSUBISHI ATTRAGE

Mitsubishi Couple weekend 7

The Mitsubishi Attrage is a compact sedan that packs a punch. It has an outstanding fuel efficiency of 20.4km/litre that will allow you to go further for less, so you won’t have to worry about taking longer drives to your next adventure. If you’re planning on making your next joyride a family picnic or a photography road trip, the Attrage’s 450-litre boot has ample space for your picnic essentials or your precious photography gear. Some of these scenic places can be a little secluded and hard to get to but the Attrage’s new Smartphone-link Display Audio System will make exploration a breeze. Navigating tricky roads is also safer with the Attrage’s Active Stability Control (ASC) which helps drivers gain control on slippery roads or during emergency manoeuvres by engaging the anti-lock braking system (ABS) to counteract slipping.

25 Incredible Things to Do in Singapore

tourist places near sg highway

I always enjoy spending time in Singapore.

Combining a vibrant mix of cultures, a history of victory and defeat and now a sheath of modern-day skyscrapers, Singapore remains a must-see destination despite the lofty price tag. Although hard to explore on a tight budget, the Lion City delivers in spades thanks to rooftop infinity pools, night time safaris, temples and a little place called Sentosa Island.

Singapore’s quality public transport system, from its metro to cable cars, makes getting around the city easy, especially when you want to escape the heat. It only serves to give you more time to explore the many unique neighborhoods, shopping districts and energetic hawker centers for an amazing local experience.

Hit Up Gardens by the Bay at Daylight and Night

There’s nowhere on earth quite like Gardens by the Bay.

One of the first things travelers notice about Singapore is how green the ultra-modern city is. Such pride is taken in the cleanliness of the streets that you won’t find a single item of litter flowing in the wind. Its focus on conservation and beautiful aesthetics is best exemplified by the vibrant Gardens by the Bay.

While we also recommend visiting the Singapore Botanic Garden, there’s something truly unique about this installation and its futuristic designs. With a selection of gorgeous gardens and incredible biodomes, you can easily escape the rush of downtown alongside 800 species of plants that represent multiple climates from around the world.

The Gardens by the Bay eloquently mixes nature with art. In one area, you’ll find giant desert cacti, followed by a man-made mountain with a beautiful waterfall. Later stumble upon giant sleeping babies floating in the air. The most memorable part of the experience is the Supertree Grove. The grove features several towering “trees” connected by a canopy walkway.

Have Sunset Cocktails at the Marina Bay Sands

There’s no doubt about it: the most iconic structure in Singapore has to be the Marina Bay Sands. This trio of towering buildings is connected at the top by a ship (well, at least it looks like a ship), which in turn is home to most incredible infinity pool overlooking the city.

The infinity pool isn’t for everyone. In fact, only guests of the hotel can access the pool — and it’s one of the priciest properties in Singapore. Stays at the hotel start from $500 a night , so this is definitely one for a special occasion.

If your budget can’t quite stretch that far, you’ll still have the opportunity to experience a small taste of the hotel’s luxury, because everyone is free to access the SkyPark Observation Deck at the Marina Bay Sands. Located on the 57th floor, the views from up here are unrivaled. In my opinion, the best time to visit is at sunset — you can see the epic views in my photo above, but here’s the view from another angle, too:

Grab yourself a cold Singapore sling and wait for the sunset; in either direction, the views are spectacular.

You’ll either be looking towards the dense city, packed full of skyscrapers, or out towards the water, with greenery, gardens, and dozens of ships. To me, that summarises Singapore perfectly: skyscrapers, ships, and scenery! And yes, one of the best parts of being up in the SkyPark is getting to watch the Gardens by the Bay light show from above.

I saved visiting Marina Bay Sands for my final night in Singapore and it was the perfect send-off for my time in the city. I got to toast to a wonderful trip, watch the city begin to light up, and point out all the spots that had made my trip so special.

Walk through Chinatown

With such strong connections to China, it’s no surprise that visitors will find an air of authenticity about Singapore’s Chinatown. The neighborhood comes with a flurry of tiny mom-and-pop shops and delicious home-style restaurants in one is one of the oldest districts in Singapore.

Begin your experience at the local metro station and walk down Pagoda Street. Teeming with your typical gift shops, parlors and restaurants, continue on until you reach the Chinatown Heritage Centre. Discover the fascinating past through a series of exhibits before returning to the bustle of the local streets.

Chinatown is also home to a number of temples, including the Hindu Sri Mariamman temple and the Buddha Tooth Relic. If you’re staying nearby, you may hear the ceremony drum beat from the Buddha Tooth Relic temple as early as 4am. When jumping between attractions, shops and restaurants, you’ll find heritage markers placed throughout, further guiding you through the importance of Singapore’s Chinatown.

If you can’t get enough, explore Chinatown on this exciting night tour . Visit a traditional medicine hall, with dinner and a trishaw ride included all alongside your knowledgeable guide.

Have a day at Sentosa Island

Famous for its highrises, technology and business, you’d be forgiven for thinking you won’t have a beach day in Singapore. But if you’re traveling around South East Asia and are missing the beach bum lifestyle, then you can get your fix at the magical Sentosa Island.

The island is where you’ll find the Maritime Museum and the Insta-worthy Merlion statue, but the three local beaches are all the more reason to visit. Each of the trio offers something different. If you just want to relax away from the city, then make your way to Tanjong Beach for peace and a drink on the golden sands. For families, you can’t go wrong with Palawan, while if you want some action, lie down your towel at Siloso Beach.

If you want to see more of the island, then have your choice between the world’s largest aquarium, the Adventure Cove Waterpark, and Universal Studios! As you can see, you won’t have a hard time staying entertained.

Watch the Singapore Grand Prix

As Formula 1’s original night race, the Singapore Grand Prix has always been at the forefront of innovation, entertainment and action-packed racing. That’s just some of the reasons you should time your visit to coincide with race day. The street circuit meanders around Marina Bay with the city’s epic skyline creating the perfect backdrop to watch the fastest racers on the planet.

The race’s central location makes it easy to get from downtown to the track, while some nearby hotels offer views of the race from their high-priced balconies. Aside from the action on the track, the Singapore Grand Prix is renowned for its fan entertainment, with an array of trackside parties, interactive events and on-track concerts featuring A-list musicians.

The race generally takes place in September across a 4-day race weekend with the main event kicking off on Sunday night.

Go to Clarke Quay

Once a worldwide center of commerce and trade, today Clarke Quay has to settle for being one of the biggest hubs for dining, nightlife and entertainment in Singapore. During the day, you’ll find plenty of shopping, waterside eats and river taxis ready to take you up and down the Singapore River.

Clarke Quay covers both sides of the river and goes to another level at night, when the quay’s mix of rainbow lights reflects on the water, making it an intriguing destination. Travelers join locals and young professionals fresh from a day in the central Business District with the beers flowing, food flying in every direction and a great concentration of live music.

One of the prominent establishments in Clarke Quay is the Crazy Elephant. Known for its cheap beer and music, enjoy a parred back experience that’s a welcome contrast to the often refined Singapore nightlife.

Ride the Singapore Flyer

Reaching the dizzying height of 540ft (165m) the Singapore Flyer is one of the tallest observation wheels on earth. The wheel’s sheer size and presence has made it as much a part of the Singapore skyline as the more famous skyscrapers. A popular alternative to the Marina Bay Sands observation deck, visitors can capture exceptional views across the 30-minute experience.

As you continue to slowly rise from the comfort of your air-conditioned capsule, you’ll be able to see the entirety of Marina Bay and the downtown streets. But keen observers will be able to make out Sentosa Island, beyond to the Singapore Strait and even the northwest islands of Indonesia!

Complete the MacRitchie Treetop Walk

Guiding you through the largest reservoir in the country, the MacRitchie Trail is the local choice for a run or hike through beautiful nature. The trail features 6.8 miles (11km) of pathways, with the main highlight being the enormous suspension bridge complete with excellent views as you cross.

It takes a couple of hours to complete the entire walk, but with little elevation gain, there’s no stopping anyone from doing the whole thing. But remember to bring along plenty of water to stay hydrated under the searing sun. Exploring the reservoir doesn’t have to be done on foot as you can also rent kayaks to get a better look at the wetlands. Keep your eyes and ears open for the flying lemurs that call the reservoir home.

Go on a walking tour

Sometimes there is no better way to get to know a place than to walk the streets and take it all in at a slow pace. Singapore is home to a wide range of walking tours that cover a whole breadth of topics, from history and architecture to food and nature. While we have listed a great food tour below, you can really get to know Singapore on any of these experiences on foot.

On this history and culture walking tour, see all the cultural highlights within Civil District, Marina Bay and Chinatown with a wonderful guide to guest ratio. Rather than just taking photos and moving on, receive invaluable insight into each location with the help of your expert guide.

For something a little different, this military-focused walking tour explores Singapore’s wartime history. Over 2.5 hours visit some of the key battle sites, including a historic colonial fort.

Embark on a night safari

Tired of the usual zoo experience? Spice things up on with a night safari next to the amazing Singapore Zoo. The exceptional experience occurs within the neighboring wildlife park, which is only open at night between 7.30pm and midnight. It guarantees to differ from any zoo experience you’ve had before as you get to look into the lives of the animals under the moonlight.

As you prepare to experience the jungle at night, over 100 species are already roaming in the distance, including alligators, tigers, and elephants. From your seat aboard the electric tram, which runs around the perimeter, visit four different sections that divide up the big cat species with native animals, Malayan tigers and Australian marsupials.

A big highlight for traveling families is the Creatures of the Night Show, along with the bat enclosure that brings the entire family up close and personal with giant fruit bats.

Wander the Botanic Gardens

Featuring the most extensive orchid garden in the world, the Botanic Gardens is the definition of an urban oasis and one of the top things to do in Singapore. Just west of the bustling malls along Orchard Road, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is flush with tranquility, along with manicured gardens and pristine lakes.

You can explore the green space along the boardwalk that snakes through a section of ancient rainforest which outdates the gardens and features over 150 rare plants. Next up, visit each of the three lakes, the best of which is Swan Lake home to mute swans sent over from Amsterdam.

It goes without saying that the major attraction in the gardens is the National Orchid Garden. Since the late 1920s, orchids have been planted right here with the space now displaying 1000 species and 2000 hybrids. At any given time, you can see 600 orchids each with their own interesting names.

Shop til you drop at Orchard Road

Steps away from the world’s largest orchid garden, you won’t find a single such flower on Orchard Road. But that’s not what makes this stretch of pavement one of the busiest in Singapore. As the city’s major shopping street, you can easily spend a whole day jumping between stores until your legs give out.

Along the road, you’ll have your choice of several major malls with prominent department stores and high-end brands. Head to Paragon for your designer fashion, including Singapore’s own Raoul. ION Orchid is all about streetware, while 313@Somerset will be a hit with the younger crowd.

Before heading on home, if your legs have some life left, make your way to the Tanglin Shopping Centre for ornamental gifts, craftwork and local art.

Take the kids to Universal Studios

Bringing the sights and sounds of Hollywood to Singapore, one of the best things to do in Singapore with kids is to make the trip to Universal Studios. On Sentosa Island, the theme park steals the show with a range of attractions that will keep the young ones busy and happy with plenty of excitement on offer for us older folk.

Some of the best kid-friendly rides include the Puss in Boots themes Giant Journey in Far Far Away and the Sesame Street Show , a dancing extravaganza. If you’re feeling ready for a heart-in-mouth experience, then head to Sci-Fi City, where the world’s tallest dueling rollercoaster can be found.

Other thrilling parts of Singapore’s Universal Studios include Ancient Egypt, where you can ride the hair-raising Revenge of the Mummy rollercoaster. Grab yourself a Sentosa FUN Pass to skip the line and enjoy all the other attractions on the island.

Visit Fort Canning Park

If you embarked on the military walking tour of Singapore, you would have crossed paths with the Fort Canning stronghold. The fort was built in the mid-19 th century as a way to defend Singapore from any attacks. But it wasn’t until almost a century later that it became a major bunker during the Second World War.

103 years after the last brick was laid down and Fort Canning opened, the building was surrendered to the Japanese in 1942. As of August 1965, when Singapore became an independent republic, Fort Canning is no longer in the hands of the Japanese and has become a prominent cultural hub. The building and surrounding park is home to regular performances and festivals, along with being a lovely spot for a picnic.

Before heading off, experience the Battlebox, a museum that explores the WWII defeat through its subterranean rooms that replicate scenes from the war.

Explore the National Museum of Singapore

If Fort Canning has piqued your interest, then receive the full-scale of Singapore’s storied past at the National Museum. Within the architectural marvel, which opened in 1849, the museum does an incredible job of bringing the city’s stories to life through a variety of multimedia exhibits.

As the original home of the city’s historical records and an artifact repository, the space was always destined to become a world-class museum. Inside you’ll find a variety of halls that dive into different topics, spanning from Singapore’s beginnings as Temasek (sea town), its colonial era, wartime efforts and the prominent “We Built a Nation” exhibit that explores Singapore’s first ten years of independence after 1965.

Dine in Little India

Alongside Chinatown and the eclectic arts’ districts, Little India is one of the most vibrant parts of Singapore. With the powerful aromas floating through the air, temples around every corner and, of course, some amazing food. In fact, if you’re after cheap eats, then this is the place in Singapore to go.

As you wander around town, looking for a place to eat, keep an eye out for any place with guests eating by hand. Go there for the most authentic Indian food in the city. Just be sure you can handle the heat and being the only tourist!

Another must-visit part of Little India is the Tekka Center, a hawker hub with local eats, fresh produce and plenty of energetic shopping. But the best way to see the entire district is on this walking cultural and food tour . Your guide will take you far off the tourist trail, embarking on a trip to the cultural and historical highlights of Little India with plenty of food along the way.

See the Haw Par Villa

For all Singapore’s finely tuned and manicured parks, it’s nice to know there’s one that is a little rough around the edges. A veritable gem and a cultural highlight of Singapore, Haw Par Villa is one of the most unique attractions in the South East Asian city. Founded in the 1930s by the man that brought your Tiger Balm, Aw Boon Haw, the park began with over 1000 ornate sculptures and displays that taught traditional Chinese values.

One of the most enlightening parts of Haw Par Villa is the Ten Courts of Hell, a series of dioramas that show what Hell is in Chinese spirituality. Raw and unapologetic, the park is a fascinating look into Chinese mythology and doesn’t concern itself too much with pleasing the masses. As a result, it’s far from a tourist trap and with recent renovations, it’s a wonderful place to take a walk.

Complain About the Prices at Raffles

It’s a rite of passage when it comes to travel in Singapore: practically every visitor to this nation decides to drink a Singapore sling in its birthplace. And off they go to the Raffles Hotel, queue up for access to the Long Bar, order their cocktails, then wince when they’re greeted with the bill.

Yes, they’re expensive.

But it’s also an absolutely iconic experience that you can only have in one place in the world. To me, that’s what travel is all about: those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that simply can’t be replicated.

So you bet I went straight to the Raffles Hotel upon arriving in Singapore and yes… I did shudder when I saw the 39 SGD (29 USD/24 GBP) price tag. And then I paid it.

To be fair, this was an experience . The Long Bar in the Raffles Hotel has a fascinating history and the vibes it offers up are immaculate.

Still, there are alternatives.

If you’re planning on visiting the SkyPark Observation Deck in the Marina Bay Sands resort, then get more bang for your buck by heading straight to Ce La Vi (the bar inside Marina Bay Sands) and use the ticket price on a Singapore Sling. Enjoy much the same view without having to pay to enter, just be sure to avoid wearing your flip-flops.

A fantastic alternative is One Altitude Rooftop Bar, within one of the tallest buildings in Singapore. Enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the city and Marina Bay Sands. Entrance is a bit steep, but it includes two free drinks.

Join a culinary tour

Contrary to almost all of South East Asia, Singapore isn’t a notably cheap place to eat out. But with such amazing culinary experiences to be had, tucked into every nook and cranny in town, spare some money in the budget to taste the best of it on a food tour around Singapore.

For a food tour with tons of variety, join a highly rated culinary experience called 10 Tasting with Locals . The private tour brings you to the best eats in town while seeing plenty of cultural highlights along the way.

Spend time in Merlion Park

A representation of Singapore’s humble beginnings as a small fishing village and its growth into the “Lion City”, Merlion is one of the top attractions in Singapore. Placed on Sentosa Island, the colossal statue is of a mythical creature by the same name. At the top is the head of the lion, which soon makes way for the body and tail of a fish with “Mer” meaning the sea.

The Merlion statue found its forever home in Merlion Park back in 2002. Along the Singapore River, the structure is flanked by a large raised platform offering magnificent views of the city and the beguiling art piece. Alongside Merlion is its cub, while you can also find five more replica statues around Singapore.

Get your art fix at the National Gallery

Offering a strong focus on modern art from the 19 th century to now, the National Gallery has the largest collection of art from this era, in all of South East Asia. Visitors can split their time between two buildings which combine to host over 9000 pieces of art.

The gallery’s buildings are City Hall and a part of the city’s former Supreme Court. For an elevated experience, you can sign up for a free tour, held in either Mandarin or English, which will help you uncover a new perspective of the many outstanding works.

Singapore’s National Gallery also plays host to many workshops throughout the year along with live performances and presentations just for kids.

Explore Pulau Ubin

A time capsule that will take you back in time by 50 years, Pulau Ubin is a fascinating look into Singapore as it once was. Pulau Ubin was once a mining hub, home to large granite quarries that sustained the local community. But when the quarries closed, most left leaving a community with a population of less than 50.

Those that remained continued their way of life, making it one of the most fascinating experiences to have in Singapore. After taking the brief 10-minute ferry from Changi Point Ferry Terminal, you’ll be swept up by the peaceful island, a world away from one of the world’s iconic cities. Aside from exploring local villages, Pulau Ubin is home to one of the few examples of natural habitat around Singapore, the Chek Jawa Wetlands. You can stroll through the park on a meandering boardwalk or rent a bicycle for a leisurely ride.

Check in to your flight early

As someone that experienced a 24-hour layover in Singapore and never left the airport, I can verify that Jewel Changi Airport deserves its spot on the list of the world’s best airports. Far more than a place to arrive and leave, the massive airport is part shopping mall, part dining mecca and entertainment hub.

Aside from the free PlayStations, highlights of Jewel Changi include the enormous 7-story indoor waterfall, 300 stores with infinite possibilities for that last-minute gift along with an interior forest with elevated walkways. Each of the three terminals has their own garden, while you can also choose between two cinemas and a 4-story-tall slide for young and old.

You may be in no rush to leave Singapore, but we won’t blame you for checking in early to experience this one-of-a-kind airport.

See St. Andrew’s Cathedral

Within Singapore’s Civic District is a Neo-Gothic monument that stands out in sheer beautiful contrast to the many modern skyscrapers. St. Andrew’s Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in the city, surrounded by lush vegetation with the minimalist spire rising out of the canopy.

The cathedral was built in the middle of the 1800s and was the first Anglican church in the country. For almost a century, it held mass until it was transformed into a makeshift hospital during the Second World War. Today you can appreciate the ornate architecture up close, while also admiring the interior designs. The surrounding grounds are also a lovely place to enjoy an afternoon picnic.

Walk the Southern Ridges

Comprising 5.6 miles (9km) of easy to moderate walking trails, the Southern Ridges is the perfect way to experience the best parks in the city. The innovative trail connects Singapore’s MT Faber, Kent Ridge and Telok Blangah Parks on an often elevated walkway with plenty of views along the way.

Mt Faber is one of the oldest parks in the city and home to Singapore’s second tallest hill. Covered in forests, hikes through the park offer far-reaching views of southern Singapore along with the ocean and islands beyond. From there you can complete the roughly 60-minute walk to Kent Ridge Park.

But prepare to stop and admire the scenery along the way as the trail guides you through the undulating canopy called the Henderson Waves, before reaching Telok Blangah for panoramic city views. Next up is the Elevated Walkway that takes you high into the forest for a walk among the birds and butterflies. Finally, you’ll reach Kent Ridge Park, where one of the last defeats in the Battle of Singapore took place.
