Just arrived back from the German Christmas Market tour.  It was a positive experience right from the start when we went to your Hamrun outlet to book. Carl was so helpful and considerate. Then when we met Ms Rita Camilleri and it was the proverbial cherry on the cake. There was nothing more she could do to make our holiday a memorable one. With her firm and gentle guidance, she was an example which led all the people participating to follow. Believe me Ms Camilleri surpassed all expectations. Thanks again, for everything and looking forward at joining you again in the near future.

Just back from the spring Northern Ireland tour. Just fantastic!!!! Our tour leader Stephanie Buhagiar did a great job in taking us to all the beautiful sightseeing attractions around the country. She was helpful, friendly and did her upmost to see that we were all taking good care of. Thanks Stephanie, you made it Perfect!!!

Excellent, efficient and super friendly service. Special thanks to Mireille Schembri for taking the time to sort everything out for us in such a dedicated manner!

This agency gives top class service. I highly recommend SMSMondial. Employees give excellent service to customers. Keep it up and well done.

We have just booked our honeymoon with one of your Travel Consultants Miriam Fenech. We sincerely appreciate her patience, good advice and the fact that she always answered our queries in a timely manner. We will recommend your company to others because of our satisfaction with your service. Thank you for helping turn our dream into reality!

What exactly does adventure mean? It is a frequently used word which certainly means different things to different people. Each person will have their own opinion on what constitutes an adventure to them. That is part of the beauty of adventure.

How do we define adventure ? For us, it is stepping out of your comfort zone to challenge yourself with new experiences and taking some degree of risk, no matter how small. You need to feel butterflies in your stomach, either from excitement and even some fear!  So we can say there are two key features of adventure. The first is the unknown. The less you know what the outcome of an activity will be, the more adventurous it is. The second feature of adventure is fear. Anything adventurous entails a little bit of fear and sometimes a lot of it!

Going on an adventure means breaking down your internal barriers. We should look forward to getting that odd feeling of fear and excitement before our next adventure because it means we are challenging our limits.

So why do something adventurous if it takes you out of your comfort zone? After all we usually, but not always ( Bilbo is a good example) have to actively look for adventure. Because being adventurous requires an attitude of mind whereby challenging yourself, pushing the limits of what you think you are capable of and extending those limits, is enormously satisfying. Perhaps the phrase ‘young at heart’ just means that someone is open to new adventures. For small children, every day is an adventure as it brings something new into their lives.

Most people would consider throwing themselves out of a plane or leaping from a platform with a bungee cord tied around their ankles as pretty adventurous but one doesn’t have to go to such extremes. For many people, the fear factor would overshadow the benefits of such an activity.  Every day has the potential to be an adventurous one. Taking the bus to work instead of driving, trying a new supermarket, making an effort have a conversation with someone at work you don’t usually talk to can all be considered adventurous activities.

Travel provides so many opportunities for adventure.  Just th e anticipation of boarding a plane bound for a new destination, mixing with strangers from other cultures and perhaps attempting to communicate in another language are exciting. That is one of the reasons travel is so popular. It gives you a great opportunity to push the limits of what you feel you are capable of, whether it is doing some activity - not necessarily sky diving - a walk through a local market will also do just as well :-), experiencing different cultures and tasting new food.

And to top it off a vacation gives you a chance to savour these new experiences as you relax in the evening, perhaps with a drink in hand as you chat to new friends about the day's experiences.

We hope our website will encourage you to plan an adventure with us :-)

Wherever you want to travel. Whatever you want to do. We are there for you.

View of Paola City from Valletta Waterfront with boats in the harbour on a sunny day in Malta

Floating smack-bang and isolated in the middle of the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, minuscule Malta trots along to a charmingly laid back pace.

A consortium of 3 bite-sized islands containing countless blue water lagoons backed by stunning surrounds, the country presents a beguiling mish-mash of Arabic and European languages, architecture, cuisine and traditions - the legacy of having been alternately raided, invaded, or occupied by virtually every Western power to have attained conquering capacities over the past 2,000 years. Little wonder then that the locals are so versed in sharing their island’s spoils with the latest foreign hordes to reach their shores.

Best time to visit malta.

Malta’s summer season - stretching from April right through to October - is the best time to visit, with daytime temperatures generally sitting in the high 60s that are tempered by sea breezes along the coast.

Over July and August, the temperatures can climb above 80 degrees F - perfect for some, unpleasant for others.

From November to March, temperatures range around 60 degrees F and it can be quite rainy in December and January.

Geography and environment

Malta’s largest island (which goes by the same name) consists of low-lying, hilly and mostly arid terrain covered by terraced fields and bounded by a rugged coastline of coves, harbors and beaches.

Gozo is noticeably greener and more densely vegetated, with craggy cliffs and flat-topped hills.

Top 5 movies shot in Malta

1. gladiator.

Fans of Ridley Scott’s historical Roman epic, charting the rise, fall, rise and death of wronged General Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe) will be interested to hear that the scenes of Ancient Rome and the Colosseum were actually shot in neither. Instead, a million dollar replica of the city and its illustrious fighting stadium were constructed and filmed in Malta’s Fort Ricasoli. The film, which dominated the 73rd Academy Awards, included some brilliant scenes of Crowe doing somersaults while battling tigers.

Starring Brad Pitt and Australia’s own Eric Bana, Wolfgang Peterson’s loose adaptation of Homer’s Iliad was shot almost exclusively in Malta’s Mellieha, Fort Ricasoli and on Malta’s sister island Comino. An epic tale of wanton murder and betrayal, fueled by an illicit royal affair, the film was purportedly produced on a budget of approximately $175 million – making it one of the most expensive ever made. In a damning demonstration that people learn nothing from history, the Turkish town of Canakkale accepted Pitt's gifting of the giant Trojan Horse maquette used in the film.

3. World War Z

When a zombie outbreak threatens the planet’s very existence, United Nations worker Gerry Lane (played by Malta-crazy Brad Pitt) decides to step in. Citing inspiration from All the President’s Men and The Bourne Identity, this 'politically-penetrating apocalyptic horror film' featured scenes shot in Malta’s Valletta, Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Senglea.

4. Orca - The Killer Whale

A captivating piece of 70s filmmaking wizardry, Orca: The Killer Whale tells the tale of a great white shark hunt gone horribly wrong. Captain Nolan, a salty Irish seadog looking to return to the country of his birth, accepts one last job to catch a great white shark for a local aquarium. But just as he is about to catch the shark, which is about to kill a canoeing scientist named Ken, a killer whale appears out of nowhere and kills the shark. Infuriated, Nolan harpoons the whale, but hits the wrong one – the whale's pregnant whale girlfriend! Understandably irate, the canny Orca bachelor now sets out laying waste to the entire fishing village; sinking boats, exploding the community’s fuel reserves, and chomping Nolan’s friend’s leg off when he attacks their seaside dwelling. The final, nail-biting scene, in which the Killer Orca lures Nolan out to the remote polar region of Labrador and sinks his boat by knocking an iceberg into it, was fabricated and filmed off the coast of Malta.

5. Swept Away

Popularly lauded as one of the worst movies ever made, Guy Ritchie’s Swept Away – starring his then-wife Madonna – marked the director’s filmmaking nadir. A right box-office disaster, the film scooped the 2002 Raspberry Awards and was the only movie ever to have won both Worst Picture and Worst remake or Sequel. What the film does have going for it is the setting, with Blue Lagoon, Vittoriosa and Mdina all featuring prominently as the stunning backdrop to the mismatched couple’s shipwrecked shenanigans.

‘It is a headache’: Staff shortages continue to pile pressure on Malta’s tourism industry

Tourism was put on standby during the COVID-19 pandemic, as airports were forced to close and airlines had to cancel most of their flights. As a result, a number of players in the tourism industry had to lay off workers to minimise costs, which has created massive staff shortages after a rapid rise in demand…

Kraze Travel

We strive to ensure that everyone who

wants to travel has the opportunity to

have the most epic experience ever

Community of like-minded people 1st. Travel Agents 2nd.

Through Kraze Travel, we carry out our mission of giving amazing experiences to fellow travellers. We oraganise multiple events in Malta and have informative (and Fun) meetings at our  office in Attard .

Making new friends is up to you, but we'll make it very easy

Come solo, or get your clan with you. We got you covered. Our team-building activities are sure to break the ice between you and fellow travellers, and the people within our community are extremely welcoming.

Small Groups means less hiccups and more  friendships

We hate travelling in large groups too. We only take a maximum of 19 people. Small groups & the many solo travellers who join us, make easy for people to bond during the trip.

Also, it means far less waiting time.

Here are a few things about us:

  • Luke & Romy are the heart and soul behind Kraze Travel. In 2016, we decided to leave it all behind and Travel. To read  more about that,  Click here (Lovin Malta) .
  • Since then we've been to more than 50 countries together, and we only offer trips to destinations we've been to ourselves to ensure that we only talk from our own experiences, not from what we research on Google.
  • We hated the concept behind travel agencies too . That's why we decided to create something that's completely different. And it worked. We have created a community of young, like-minded people, where 85% of our clients are less than 44 years old.
  • Over the past 2 years we've had more than 33 groups going on incredible journeys together in Nepal, Morocco, Peru, Vietnam and others, with  47% of the travellers joining Kraze Travellers as a solo traveller (and make new friends within the group).
  • More than 200 people have recommended our service We have these testimonials on Facebook Kraze Travel, Tag Along Travellers , and on website .
  • Kraze Travel is run by a team of experienced professionals, complimenting each others' skills, with access to modern systems, enabling us to work in a highly organised fashion.

What is Kraze Travel about?

Our Mantra is "Dream, Believe and Make it Happen". Through Kraze Travel we want to help people to live their Dream, and Travel.

We are community of like-minded people, and we do events in Malta, and in some of the most amazing destinations on Earth.

Adventure is within our DNA. Any trip that we has a  jam-packed picked with adrenaline pumping activities , such as trekking, quad biking, canyoning and white water rafting, just to name a few.

We believe that the destination of the trip is as important as the people you are travelling with. People who join us are young, open-minded, and ready for an adventure .

You can research on the internet where you are going yourself. But we refuse to do that. Unlike other travel agencies, we will only advise you about places we've been to ourselves only, so we always talk from first-hand experience .

On top of that, we only organise trips to places where we've finalised agreements with reliable services providers in each destination, to ensure a top quality service.

Through experience, we have specialised in Vietnam, Peru, Nepal, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Turkey, Sicily and Thailand.

About you?

First of all, we'd like to thank you visiting our website.... Thank You! 😊

Being here means you love travelled just as much as we do - which is awesome!  Over the past 2 years, we've had different people asking us to help them make their Dreams Come True.

  • Tag Along Trips - young people who are looking for a change or an adventure, and are ready to go out of their comfort zone by meeting new friends, and exploring different cultures in group travel.
  • Clan Trips - from small groups of 4 friends, to a entire families, we took care of designing a perfect tailored-trip that thrilled everyone who joined.
  • Family Trips - couples who want to explore the world with their children in a safe environment on a tailored-trip.
  • Honeymoon - couples who wanted to have a stress-free holiday in Bali that included relaxing with a touch of adventure and romance.
  • Wellness Trips - thriving companies are head over heels on attracting and retaining the best talent. Performing team-building activities in foreign cultures, whilst everyone is having a good time boost employee culture.

If you feel that we can help you live your travel dreams, we humbly ask you to read on , to discover what's in it for us. How we, a teacher and an engineer, got to a stage in our life were we are inviting you to join our community of like-minded people through our Travel Agency in Malta...

Feeling totally lost: Our Story

We had everything. Luke had a successful ISO Certifiction business, and Romy was a teacher. We’d just got engaged with 1 year to go for their wedding...

Yet still, life wasn’t great. We weren’t satisfied with the trajectory of our lives..

We had to figure out what we really wanted to do in our lives. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise because through travel, we have received the opportunity to do what we love, by helping people live their dreams.

Now we run Kraze Travel, as the medium through which we enable people to tick items off their bucket list in some of the most amazing places on Earth.

Leaving it all Behind

Back in 20 1 6 we both quit our jobs because we couldn't cope where is doing something with it in love day in day out.

After deciding to leave it all behind and travel

We're not sure who we really were anymore.

Luke is a mechanical engineer by profession. After less than 2 years in the profession he realised that's it wasn't for him an so he started from scratch to find work that suited his character.

After being rejected several times I finally found a job in sales and marketing and from there, he went on to create a consulting firm.

Romy was a teacher. She's always had the travel bug. Before meeting Luke, she had already travelled extensively, including a one-year backpacking experience in Australia. After Luke proposed she thought that her life was settled. She imagined herself planning her wedding.

We both had a secure income, a home to live  in, yet that wasn't what we were after... we wanted  to live!

Instead, we decided to leave it all behind, and travel because we choose to live every day, and we die once. And we're not sure when that'll happen, so we don't like to postpone on our dreams..

The Journey Begins

Our mantra is is to Dream, Believe and #MakeItHappen.

We didn't want to fall into society strap of buying amazing objects that will only make us happy for a short while.

Instead, we wanted to invest in experiences, we wanted to invest in our own relationship. so, we decided to travel.

We sold everything we had, and we set out on a journey that included only flights to India and coming back from the Philippines. With nothing planned in between.

And what we discovered along the way blew our minds!

Treasures from our journey

We had no plans to visit Nepal, but life took us there. Even though we enjoyed travelling solo, while we were trekking in the Himalayas, we learnt the power of being in a group.

Alone we wouldn't have managed to reach the summit and therefore we decided to team up with fellow travellers to reach the summit of the Thorong La pass withing a group. Reaching the peak was one of the best experiences of our lives (Luke cried!).

We met so many interesting locals, who had incredible stories to tell, like Carlos who was head hunted by Pablo Escobar . We slept with local people, and ate local food (which kinda hurt our stomach sometimes)...

We wanted to experience it all... and somehow we were compelled to share what we've discovered .

Tag Along Travellers: our first way of sharing our best memories

During our travels, we instantly discovered that what we really wanted to do 'when we grow up'.

We realised that we wanted to push people out of their comfort zone, and to help people to live their dreams, and travel.

We were so grateful for our experiences, that we felt like we had an obligation to share some of the experiences we've had throughout our travels . And we launched a blog called Tag Along Travellers.

There, we shared some of the amazing gems we had discovered. Some of the places we’ve been to, were shit, and we shared that too.

We just wanted to find the hottest locations on Earth, and share them with you, like this blog about the things to do in Cat Ba Island, Vietnam .

Based on our experiences, many people were asking us for tips on how to travel, however we quickly discovered that most people don’t have who to travel with. Including us. And that there's a benefit to group travel...

Our First Journey together (without even knowing) was in group travel

We quickly remembered we'd met on a group travel trip ourselves...

In August 2012, Romy had organised a trip between friends to India. Friends got their friends with them, and in all 11 people joined that group. Luke was one of them. During the trip, as happens with small groups, everyone became friends, including Luke and Romy .

Still, during the trip there wasn’t any attraction (even though Luke keeps on insisting that Romy was flirting with him…).

Yet 1 year later, the friendship was still going strong, and then there was the spark! Now, 5 years later we are married, thanks to a random trip we took in India.

Which showed that that yes, you can travel in a group and meet new like-minded people . We realised that since that trip in India, we had never travelled with anyone else to exciting destinations.

We had no one to travel with

As we grew older, we all get to choose our own lifestyle.  Our own best friends have never been with us on any trip to SE Asia, or some other remote country...

We’ve only travelled on short breaks in Europe, because that’s what they’d rather do. We love our friends to bits, but we’re into different styles of travel.

We think that it's very normal to not have friends who love travel the same way as you do. As is the case with us..

We also knew the power of groups, based on our experience in Nepal, and since we met on group travel ourselves, we wanted to do what we love, and leave it open to anyone who enjoyed doing what we enjoyed doing too… we started with a single trekking activity in Malta.

And from there we ended up having 60 people who were due to trek in Nepal. Even though we could have done with one BIG group (ala other Maltese travel agencies), we decided to split people in 4 groups, of 15 people each so we had a real connection with each of the fellow travellers.

Romy had her birthday on the day we reach the summit of the Thorong La Pass. Now, without even tell Luke, every person in the group carried with them 1 small item, that was all they needed to throw a surprise birthday party high up in the mountains - such is the power of the bond of the people in our groups !

Creating a Community of like-minded people

Since day 1, we wanted to meet new like-minded people ourselves. So far, we’ve made many new friends, and multiple levels of connection and bonding, and it feels great.

Just like we did, many other fellow travellers who have travelled in our groups have remained friends well beyond their trip, some have even started dating.

Since we all like the same things, we organise events in Malta, including trekking, adventure games, and weekends out for a drink (or 5).

People who have travelled with us, and who will soon travel with us join these events, however they are open to anyone. None of the people who join us stay in their own mini group.

And it is great to see that everyone is so welcoming, and open for new friendships . And the community kept on growing, and we had even got the License to operate as a Travel Agency

We didn’t want a Travel Agency

Since we organise events in Malta and abroad, we are technically labelled as a Travel Agency.

We are licensed by all relevant government entities, including MTA who have issued us with a License, and we are part of the Insolvency Fund.

That said, we don’t like the word travel agency. We hate that word, like we hate Tour Leader, and the word Tours in general. We’d rather say we have a Trip Manager who takes people on a Trip..

That’s a cosmetic change, just the tip of the iceberg of how we always want to be different.

We’ve never travelled with any other travel agency ourselves. We wouldn’t event dare to.

Once, we were in Croatia on a 2-month Europe road trip, and Luke’s parents were there on a Tour with a big and famous Maltese travel agency.

We met in Dubrovnik and finding our parents was easy – just follow the trembling sound of 50 Maltese people, mostly in their 50s and above. It was a shocking experience.

By watching this tour, we learnt how not to organise group travel.

We didn’t want to be like that, however not everything was within our control. We could control the number of people we’ll allow in each group (max 19) , to ensure that everyone get the opportunity to meet the other people in the group.

But we couldn’t control the people who join us (mind you, we did respectfully refuse people from joining us on trip).

Yet somehow, through a touch of magic, most of the people who talk to us are people that we actually like. They are like us.

Fun and adventurous people, who are determined to be the best version of themselves started talking us. .

People who don't exactly like to be ‘normal’. They’d rather challenge themselves. Not only in travel, but in life.

Launching Kraze Travel

Kraze Travel is really a community of like-minded people who go on epic adventures in Malta and abroad. Even though we are labelled as a Travel Agency, we're not same. Here's how:

  • we explore for ourselves, and we give you back only the highlights
  • our itineraries are jam-packed with adventure, with enough free time
  • we take small groups of max 19 people and see friendships created
  • attracting the younger generation
  • make use of technology to help us serve you faster
  • we organise events in Malta to build a community of people

Other Travel Agencies

  • work from behind a computer to do research
  • no adventures are included to cater for the older generation
  • take as many people as possible to maximise profit
  • attracting the not so young generation
  • take their time to rectify issues which might crop up
  • cater for people who will go with someone, else they're alone

But we could never possibly do all this alone

Luke is a lousy holiday planner. Once he wanted to plan a trip to Livigno, Italy for Romy. And he actually managed to get that wrong. Somehow, he thought that Livigno is a Region in Italy, not an actual town.

So Romy does all the planning, and meticulously decides on the most amazing locations to visit in each places we’re going to.

Which would be amazing were it to be done on a small scale.

Now over the past 2 years, we’ve had more than 1,000 people travelling with us in group travel, honeymoons, and tailored trips.

Keeping in mind what’s needed to ensure that all flights, VISAs, insurance, itineraries, and team-building activities are all going well, would have been a nightmare from Romy to handle using a pen and paper approach.

And that’s how Luke helped Romy to plan trips for so many people. By implementing the skills he’d learnt from the 4 years running a consulting firm, we can ensure that we have everything under control.

We also have colleagues working with us, Elaine and Christianne who help us handle some of 100s of requests we get each day. We cannot thank them enough for sharing our vision, and always being ready to help you to live their dreams, and to travel.

Trip managers are our pride and joy. They are some of the most outgoing, energetic and caring people we know who are sure to lead the group professional, and yet FUN way.

People who have helped us share our message

We aim to inspire people with our story. We just want to show that...

It's okay to change the trajectory of your life. You might have studied something, but you'd like to do something else. Do it! Or you have always lived in a certain way, because you thought that was normal, but you don't really like it. Change it!

We now invite you to follow your dreams too, no matter what they may be. It might not be easy at first. Don't give up. Never, ever give up!

Dream, Believe and (we promise that eventually you too will) #MakeItHappen.

We're thankful to all those who have helped us share our story. They've helped us reach that since then, has led us to see, with our own eyes people Living their Dreams.

Click on the respective links to see what they had to say about our story.

Get to know us better and meet us in person

If you're interested in joining the Kraze Community, we invite you to join us in one of the upcoming events.

  • The Full List of Paris's Michelin Star Restaurants in The MICHELIN Guide France 2024

On the eve of the Olympic Games, the Parisian food scene is flexing its muscles, from legendary restaurants making a comeback to a Japanese tea ceremony and 50 shades of bistronomy.

Since the Middle Ages, Paris has been a ‘Cockaigne’ – a land of plenty, a cornucopia, a warehouse stocked with the best produce from the French provinces and beyond. In 2024, with the Olympics on the horizon, this still holds true, and Paris is limbering up for its own gourmet games. All disciplines and categories are represented, from Japanese chefs to young, home-grown MICHELIN-Starred talent, from revered restaurants to bistros in all their contemporary incarnations. Let the games begin!

Reopening of Legendary Restaurants

New: discover paris by the michelin guide – expert insights on where to dine, stay and enjoy the city of light, paris, japanophile capital.

At Akabeko , it’s all about a subtle, French-Japanese omakase menu created by Yasuo Nanaumi. The experienced Japanese chef opened the restaurant with his son, who takes care of proceedings front of house. In this gorgeous little place, diners can shift seamlessly between the two cultures, as they tuck into dishes such as foie gras with teriyaki sauce or deep-fried sole goujonnettes with dashi. Yuichiro Akiyoshi ( Chakaiseki Akiyoshi , new star restaurant) serves up so much more than a meal. Expect a poetic interlude centred on the tea ceremony (lasting three hours) with subdued lighting and contemplative stillness; here, you forget the noise and furious pace of the city outside. Originally from Fukuoka, the chef spent 10 years in a Three Star restaurant in Kyoto, learning cha-kaiseki, the traditional Japanese culinary art based on the idea that food should complement tea. A unique restaurant in Paris. Finally, in Chef Tomoyuki Yoshinaga's Sushi Yoshinaga (new star restaurant), Paris has one of the finest restaurants dedicated to the art of sushi. The produce used smacks of exceptional quality: ikejime fish from Brittany, in particular, plus caviar, sea urchin, abalone, wild eel and matured bluefin tuna of a quality that one rarely has the opportunity to taste. The art of cutting fish, the exceptional skill of the chef, the different temperatures of the rice, the various soy sauces used to complement the fish... it has all the elements of an exceptional dining experience.

Maison Dubois (new star restaurant) may be Arthur Dubois's first restaurant but the fact remains that his dishes are nothing if not impressive. Carefully selected ingredients, proven expertise, impeccable technique – the chef shows he is a dab hand at putting a new spin on classic cuisine, in which the influence of his mentor, Pierre Gagnaire, makes its presence felt. The man behind Onor (pronounced ‘honour’, with good reason) is Thierry Marx, an up-and-coming chef who seems destined to make a name for himself. In a nautical-inspired setting (incorporating a wealth of recycled materials) reminiscent of a bijou luxury brasserie, the chef dances to his own tune, supported by his right-hand man Ricardo Silva. The menu switches between nods to Asia and the chef's classics, showcasing this judo enthusiast's many talents. On the rooftop of the Hôtel Cheval-Blanc, a surprise awaited our Inspectors: the luxury brasserie Le Tout-Paris , whose all-encompassing view is enough to whet the appetite. Leading chefs Arnaud Donckele and Maxime Frédéric oversee the kitchen, where top-quality produce is prepared either simply (langoustine and pike quenelles accompanied by velvety pike heads with rosemary), or more elaborately (black pudding à la royale with gnocchi, juniper berries and savory). Géosmine (new star restaurant) is named for the smell that rises from freshly ploughed or wet soil, hinting at the ‘natural’ cuisine that Chef Maxime Bouttier's restaurant has in store for diners. Originally from the Sarthe ‘département’ in northwestern France, where he used to hurry after school to watch the cows being milked, he serves cow udders at his trendy restaurant in the 11th arrondissement. This offal is cooked in a seaweed broth before being pan-fried in butter, lightly grilled on the barbecue, placed on a tartare of seaweed, and topped with a little caviar and finished with two sauces. A creative dish, emblematic of a chef with a strong personality.

8 Incidents in 2 Weeks: What’s Going on With United’s Planes?

While no one was injured, most of the mishaps required emergency landings or diversions. One safety expert said the incidents were not the result of “systemic problems.”

Two blue-and-white commercial airplanes with the word “United” painted on their sides sit on the tarmac at an airport.

By Christine Chung

An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap , a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway : These are among the eight incidents that have occurred over the past two weeks on flights operated by United Airlines. While no injuries — or worse — have been reported, the mishaps have generated headlines and stoked rising anxiety about aviation safety among federal officials and passengers alike.

All of the incidents happened on flights that took off from or were headed to airports in the United States, and five involved airplanes made by Boeing, a manufacturer already under intense scrutiny. In January, a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner in mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

United, one of the world’s largest airlines, flies aircraft manufactured mainly by Boeing and Airbus. In an email United began sending to customers on Monday, the company’s chief executive, Scott Kirby, wrote that while the recent incidents were unrelated, they were “reminders of the importance of safety.”

“I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” he continued, adding that every case was being reviewed by the airline and would influence its safety training and procedures.

Here’s what travelers should know about the latest in airplane woes.

What exactly happened on or to the planes?

Most of the incidents reported in the last two weeks required emergency landings or diversions.

March 4: A Boeing 737-900 departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston returned to the airport to make an emergency landing after one of the plane engines ingested and burned plastic wrap .

March 7: A Boeing 777 leaving San Francisco for Osaka, Japan, made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport after the aircraft lost a tire .

March 8: A Boeing 737 Max 8 veered off the runway upon landing at George Bush Airport in Houston and tilted onto the grass .

Later that day, a flight leaving San Francisco for Mexico City was diverted to Los Angeles after the Airbus A320 experienced issues with its hydraulic system.

March 9: An Airbus A320 heading to Salt Lake City turned back to Chicago O’Hare International Airport after it reported maintenance issues .

March 11: A Boeing 777, flying from Sydney, Australia , to San Francisco, turned back after takeoff because the plane had a hydraulic leak.

March 14: An Airbus A320 that departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had a hydraulic leak shortly before it landed in its scheduled destination, San Francisco.

Later that day, a Boeing 737-800 that took off from San Francisco landed at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport in Oregon missing an external panel .

Are the recent issues typical, or cause for concern?

The mishaps were not the result of “systemic problems,” said Robert Sumwalt, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board who now heads a new aviation safety center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Some of these issues are things that happen occasionally, but often don’t get reported in media,” Mr. Sumwalt said, though he emphasized that none were acceptable.

Kyra Dempsey, who writes about aviation accidents in a blog called Admiral Cloudberg, said that United’s recent issues were being “falsely conflated with Boeing’s troubles.”

“While it’s bad luck that United had so many incidents in such a short period, in general such incidents happen frequently around the world and they aren’t on the rise overall,” Ms. Dempsey said.

How has United responded?

Mr. Kirby’s 270-word message to United customers, including to members of the airline’s frequent flier program, started to be sent on Monday morning, said Josh Freed, a spokesman for United.

Starting in May, United pilots will have an extra day of in-person training, a change that was already planned before the incidents, Mr. Kirby wrote. The airline will also use a “centralized training curriculum for our new hire maintenance technicians” and will dedicate additional resources to the carrier’s supply chain.

What government agencies oversee these issues, and how are they responding?

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates the country’s aviation system and investigates safety incidents on U.S. airlines, while the N.T.S.B. investigates the causes of accidents, collisions and crashes involving planes flown by U.S. carriers, in addition to other accidents involving commercial and mass transit operators. Both agencies have discretion on what they investigate, Mr. Sumwalt said.

Currently, the N.T.S.B. is investigating the incident that occurred on March 8 in Houston, when the plane veered off the runway, an agency spokesperson said. The N.T.S.B. is also looking into a Feb. 10 Los Angeles-to-Newark flight , operated by United, that experienced severe turbulence, leading to injuries among more than a dozen passengers. (The Boeing 777 landed normally, but the flight was met by medical personnel.)

Safety experts said some issues don’t necessarily rise to the level of an investigation by either agency.

For example, partial loss of some of an airplane’s multiple hydraulics systems is common, said Michael McCormick, an assistant professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a former F.A.A. control tower operator. The F.A.A. may or may not get involved for this kind of issue, unless there’s a pattern, Mr. Sumwalt said.

The January episode involving the blown door plug aboard the Alaska Airlines jet is under investigation by the N.T.S.B. and the Justice Department.

Boeing: A Company in Turmoil

Boeing is weathering a particularly difficult period: two fatal crashes, a loose panel that blew out during a flight, quality concerns and production slowdowns..

United’s Planes : An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap, a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway: These are among several incidents that have occurred over two weeks  on Boeing flights operated by United Airlines.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282: After a section of a plane headed for Ontario, Calif., blew out  10 minutes after it took off , there was increased scrutiny  on the plane’s manufacturer: Boeing . The Justice Department has since launched a criminal investigation .

Quality Control Issues: An audit that was initiated by the Federal Aviation Administration after the Alaska Airlines incident found dozens of problems  throughout Boeing’s manufacturing process and one of its key suppliers.

Whistleblower’s Death: John Barnett, a former quality manager for the company, was found dead in Charleston  in March with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was set to testify in a lawsuit in which he accused Boeing of retaliation for his complaints about quality and safety.

At Fault: A report released in February by the Federal Aviation Administration said that Boeing’s safety culture remains flawed , despite improvements made after two fatal crashes  in 2018 and 2019.

Solving an Enduring Crisis: The Federal Aviation Administration has asked Boeing to produce an action plan  to address quality control issues. We asked experts how Boeing should try and fix its longstanding problems .
