Gear Review: LEKI Tour Stick Vario Carbon Ski Poles

LEKI tour stick vario carbon ski poles review

When folding poles first came out I played with them a little bit and quickly determined that they weren’t for me- they were simply too flexy. The connections added too much slop, so even a little bit of pressure would make the pole bow like a bow and arrow. That might suffice for hiking but it would quickly prove to be annoying on a steep icy skintrack or during those rare occasions when you’re making old-school jump turns initiated off of a hard pole plant. Thankfully, the LEKI Tour Stick Vario Carbon Ski Poles don’t suffer this fate, and they feel as stiff as any other backcountry pole.

LEKI tour stick vario carbon folding ski poles adjustment

I am curious about one thing, but unfortunately I can’t check it. The lower pole will spin freely on the upper shaft, so perhaps that will make this pole difficult to use with Dynafit bindings- especially the older ones where the risers are used by spinning the binding as well. Thankfully, we haven’t had to suffer through Dynafit use for several years, so we don’t have any bindings to check this theory out on. Please comment if you have tried this pole with Dynafits and let us know. I’ll update this post once I can try it out on some one else’s binding…

Out of stock, why we like the tour stick vario carbon ski poles.

We find the Tour Stick Vario Carbon Poles particularly useful when we're splitboarding. The poles collapse to a compact size for easy packing before the ride down. We also like that Leki made the upper shaft out of carbon and the bottom out of aluminum. It's a harmonious blend of lightness and rigidity that we appreciate when we're deep in the backcountry.

  • Adjustable, collapsible ski poles for backcountry touring
  • Speedlock 2 mechanism adjusts length and collapses for compact storage
  • Carbon upper shaft and aluminum lower shaft balance lightness with rigidity
  • Aergon grip extends down the pole to enhance grip on steep skintracks
  • Powder basket and carbon tip ready you for any snow condition
  • Neoprene strap is releasable in emergency situations

Leki TourStick Vario Carbon

Splurge a bit on these trekking poles that combine carbon and aluminum for incredible durability., brand: leki.

Model: TourStick Vario Carbon

Carbon is light, but prone to nicks and cuts that can ultimately lead to breakage. Aluminum weighs more, but is tougher. The TourStick combines both materials (aluminum is used in the lowest section, which is most susceptible to damage from skis, crampons, snowshoes, or rocks), and can stand up to year-round abuse.

The top two sections telescope to adjust height—45 to 53 inches—while the lower three sections connect via tensioned strands of Kevlar sheathed in plastic.

“It’s foolproof and fuss-free, The extended foam grip has an egg-shaped top that’s perfect for palming on climbs and descents.” said our tester after 25 days of skiing and 30 hiking.

Nice: It collapses to 15 inches for easy packing. $200; 1 lb. 2 oz. per pair;

Review: Leki Tour Stick Vario Carbon for ski touring

Written by Fiona

March 15 2022

tour stick vario carbon leki

When ski touring, you need reliable but also lightweight poles. It is useful if they also fold up into a small space and have a few features, such as a heel lifter. I have tested the Leki Tour Stick Vario Carbon poles on a Scottish ski tour outing.

Leki describe the Tour Stick Vario Carbon poles as “the most versatile all-purpose weapon since ski poles have existed”.

tour stick vario carbon leki

Features include:

  • Material: Light and stiff carbon upper segment, sturdy aluminium lower segment.
  • Aergon Tour Thermo Long grip with grip extension for a comfortable fit for different hand sizes
  • Reinforced neoprene strap with fleece lining for maximum comfort
  • External Locking Device (ELD)
  • Speed Lock 2
  • Binding basket with clever features
  • Flex tip long for “more precise pole use and perfect grip in nearly all terrains”
  • Extended length: 115 to 135cm
  • Folded length: 42cm
  • Weight: 271g per pole
  • Price: £174.95 a pair
  • See: Leki Tour Stick Vario Carbon  poles
  • I have seen them for £153 on Amazon . (I receive a small commission for sales through Amazon.)

My thoughts: Leki Tour Stick Vario Carbon for ski touring

The poles feel very nice to use. The weight is just right – not too light and flimsy, nor too heavy and unwieldy. I do own lighter poles but they do not have as many features and I like the feeling of the poles being sturdy but still light enough not to be tiring on my upper body.

The long grip feels really comfortable and the neoprene strap is really lovely. It is padded and comfortable. I also found it easy to adjust the length once I had worked out how to pop up the top of the pole.

The poles grip the terrain I had no worries about the tips failing or not sticking into the snow and ice.

There are lots of nice details, too.  The ELD system allows for safe and fast folding. You simply press the big button, which can be used even when wearing gloves, and the poles can be folded.

Speed Lock 2 provides fast adjustment of the pole length. The system feels strong and durable but also easy to use. When you are out on snowy mountains you need a system that is simple and straightforward but also gives you confidence that it will work time and time again.

The binding basket has extra features. A short edge is useful for adjusting your heel raiser/lifter on skis, which means you don’t need to bend down to do it with your hands. Plus the long edge is helpful for removing ice from skins, or wherever ice has built up.

The poles fold into three, which is useful if you plan to travel abroad and want to fit them into your luggage and it also means you can stow them in your ski touring rucksack when not in use. Other poles do not fold up to such a short length.

I also like the bright orange colour of the poles. I could easily find them when I put them down, even among other people’s poles.

The price of the poles is a bit ouchy but most ski poles that contain carbon are expensive. I have found Leki poles to be long-lasting and reliable so you get what you pay for.

2014-2015 Leki Tourstick Vario Carbon Poles Leki Tourstick Vario Carbon in collapsed mode Leki Tourstick Vario Carbon at min and max lengths (20cm range) Description: The Leki Tourstick Vario Carbon is designed as a high-end, carbon/aluminum collapsable backcountry alpine ski pole with a 20cm adjustable height range when assembled. It collapses into three sections at the push of one button, the pieces connected by a polyurethane coated, Kevlar-reinforced cable with accessible spring tensioner. The poles are approximately 40.5 cm (~16 inches) long when broken-down into the three sections. (see photo below). The Tourstick Vario Carbon model comes equiped with a 30 cm (~12 inches) thermo-foam backcountry grip with a zeo-buckle, wicking adjustable strap. Retail Price $199 usd Country of Manufacture Taiwan Weight 263 grams each (measured) Summary: The Leki Tour Stick Vario is a fairly lightweight, extremely sturdy touring pole with a remarkable range of performance throughout 4 season activities and built with superb quality...at a premium price. Leki once again proves they know how to engineer and manufacture industry-leading sport poles. Some of our testers claimed previously for years and years: "... .I will never use a collapsable pole, they're clutzy, heavier than I like, unbalanced and never hold up under rigorous use..." . Everyone who tested the Tour Stick Vario Carbon poles came back saying they wanted to keep them. That says a lot. We winter-tested them in Vermont and New Hampshire for alpine skiing, touring and snowshoeing in ice, powder, manky snow, . We Spring-tested them in muddy, rocky hiking and skiing conditions. We tested them in dry, dusty Summer hiking conditions. They were lugged around in ski cargo boxes for weeks on-end, unprotected at fiull-extension, bouncing around with 4-6 pairs of skis....edges and bindings doing their best to scar the shafts, baskets, tips and grips, often buried at the bottom of the pile of skis (yes, 4-6 pais of alpine skis with bindings are heavy) Leki's Toursticks never faltered, failed, chipped or showed any wounds other than some scratches. The baskets and grips were abused, mashed and crushed but showed no signs of failure under our negligent abuse. Section Joints The cabled section joints were flawless out of the bag, with tight, exact fit tolerances and very long, secure, no-slop connections, and maintained their fit tolerances perfectly after our season of abuse with no slop, no deviations, no problems. The plastic-coated, Kevlar-reinforced cable never lost tension and showed no signs of cuts, nicks or wear of any kind, keeping the pole sections tight and locked-in when assembled. The quality of the section joints is impressive. Feature image from Leki showing sping-tensioned cable (not an elastic shock cord) Baskets At first glance, the stock plastic Leki Tourstick Vario baskets appeared to be somewhat unimpressive. They were not very large, but gave a surprising amount of support in soft and sloppy snow, only diving down a bit in truly weightless fluff. Their design prevents most snagging on brush as you poke through the woods, and they clear snow very well when you pull your pole out of deep snow. They held up under the somewhat rough conditions in the ski box with no creases, cracks, deformations or separations. We did not test any alternative baskets. Tips The concave carbide tips are anchored into aluminum socket collars which are inserted into the bottom of the pole shafts and never once came loose, chipped, cracked or suffered any damage during our winter, spring and summer tests on ice, snow, turf, rocks roots and everything else you can think of. They remained sharp and effective, and that's important in a multi-season pole. Grips & Straps The Tourstick Vario poles have what Leki calls "Aergon Thermofoam Tour Grips", which are made of a thin, dense, high-traction foam running nearly 25.4 cm (10 inches) long. These are ideal for hiking up, down and traversing terrain since you can grip high, low or in the middle and maintain excellent traction on the pole with bare hands or gloved hands. This comes in handy when traversing across a sidehill since you can grip the downhill pole at the top of the shaft and the uphill pole lower-down on the shaft and minimize wildly differential arm positions. The more you use them, the more you like them. They don't seem to hold moisture, which is a good thing. The somewhat ergonomically-shaped grip strap has a medium width, fitting most gloved and bare hands pretty well. The best part is Leki's simple and effective strap adustment mechanism. There are no troublesome buckles on the strap. To make the strap shorter or longer, give the strap a sharp upward pull against the anchor point in the top of the grip and the locking mechanism opens up with a click. Adjust the strap length, then click the strap cap back down and it's locked. Simple, fast and effective. Strap lock open with an upward tug Strap lock closed with an downward push Length Adjustment The Tourstick Vario has an variable adjustment of approximately 20 cm (~7.8 inches), between its mininimum 116 cm and maximum 136cm (~45.5 - 53.5 inches) lengths when it's assembled. Flip the plastic release lever at the bottom of the grip, slide the pole to the desired length, then flip the lever back to lock it down. The shaft adjuster holds the section securely and never once slipped in wet or icy conditions. If the poles have one potential weakness, it could be the plastic lever. Compared to the rest of the pole components, the plastic locking lever seems a bit less burly and impressive. We never had an ounce of trouble with the plastic adjustment locking lever, but if it was made out of aluminum or similar alloy, we would think it matches the rest of the quality of the poles. The weight difference would be negligible. Length lock open below grip White length lock lever closed. Section tension release button (push to drop handle and release cord tension, allowing instant collapse of sections) Bottom Line The Leki Tourstick Vario poles are probably the best example of modern collapsable poles we have seen recently, and might just set the standard for this kind of multi-season functionality with a bias toward skiing. We loved these poles. They are stiff, solid, reliable and pretty darn lightweight. They collapse quickly and easily, and reassemble quickly and easily. They allow quick and solid height adjustments. Many of the testers grew up using high-quality alpine racing poles, so the initial impression of the longer grip and higher swing weight of the Toursticks was temporarily odd, but every tester immediately became accustomed to the slight differences and eventually tried hide them every time it was someone else's turn to review the poles. Our only reservation is the $199 usd retail price, which is not outrageous, but gives many people a reason to pause when considering these poles. Once they live with the quality and consistent performance of the Toursticks, they might just think it was one of the best investments they could make for multi-terrain skiing and hiking adventures. You get what you pay for in this case. We think these poles will last for many seasons of heavy use because of their component quality and well-engineered assembly. People who want more finger/hand support in the grip should look around for the version of these poles equipped with the TourStick Trigger S grip which is a finger-molded alpine-racing style grip. Spatial-temporal dynamics of organic carbon in soddy-podzolic soils of postagrogenic biogeocenoses

The organic carbon content in developed soddy-podzolic soils increased during the overgrowing of abandoned plowland with meadow and forest vegetation. The highest carbon content was recorded at the stage of 40–50-year-old forest, which was related to the largest input of organic matter into the soil and the intense litter decomposition during this period. A decrease in the soil carbon content was observed during the development of forest vegetation on the long-term hayfields in place of the former croplands, because the humus content in the lower part of the old-arable horizon decreased significantly. The spatial variability in the distribution of organic carbon in the soils increased with the development of forest biogeocenoses.

Pomegranate Rosemary Moscow Mule

drinks · Holiday Favorites November 11, 2017

This post has been sponsored by Schweppes ® . All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Pomegranate Rosemary Moscow Mule – A festive twist on the classic Moscow Mule, made with bruised rosemary, pomegranate juice and Schweppes ®  Ginger Ale

Pomegranate Rosemary Moscow Mule in a copper mug

So are you shocked that it’s the inspiration of my newest festive cocktail made with Schweppes Ginger Ale?

Each season, I make a fun drink that suits its flavors and/or themes. For the summer, I was obsessed with these watermelon margaritas . Last winter, these cranberry lime mojitos were a hit.

And today, I bring to you the festive drink to top all festive drinks – the Pomegranate Rosemary Moscow Mule !

Pomegranate Rosemary Moscow Mule in a copper mug with a sprig of rosemary

And when I say festive, I mean festive. I mean, look at the pomegranate seeds and sprig of rosemary! Doesn’t it look like holly berries and pine tree branches?! You can’t get much more festive than that, people.

Classic moscow mules are made with 3 simple ingredients: lime, vodka, and ginger beer. Ginger beer is a fermented drink with a bold ginger flavor. The ginger is particularly strong for me so I prefer using Schweppes  ® Ginger Ale for a sweeter take on the flavor. You can easily find it in the soda aisle of your local Walmart.

Two bottles of Schweppes ginger ale on a walmart bag

Many cocktails tend to be garnished with herbs instead of mixed with herbs. But I want that flavor to shine through the whole drink. I thought about infusing the vodka, similar to what I did with this drink . But that takes some time so I didn’t want to bother with it for this recipe.

Instead, I decided to bruise the rosemary leaves a little with a muddler (or you can use a mortar and pestle). This will help the oils release from the leaves and mix a hint of rosemary essence into the drink. And thus, the rosemary isn’t just for garnish – it’s got a role in the drink, as well!

After bruising the leaves, you simply add the lime juice, vodka, and pomegranate juice and stir together. Distribute the mixture between two mugs filled with ice and then top with Schweppes ®  Ginger Ale. Don’t forget the garnishes – pomegranate seeds and rosemary sprigs make all the difference in the presentation. And presentation is EVERYTHING when it comes to festive drinks.

Bruising rosemary leaves in a tall glass with a wooden muddler

This recipe perfectly makes two drinks. You can easily make a pitcher of these, if you’re serving a crowd. But I recommend making the base without the ginger ale because it will lose the fizz when it’s stirred in a pitcher. So you should make the base, pour into mugs, and then top with the ginger ale when serving.

And if you don’t have copper mugs of your own yet, you can pick some up during your Walmart trip. That’s one of my favorite things about my Walmart trips – it’s a one-stop shop!

Two copper mugs of Pomegranate Rosemary Moscow Mule

This is drink is as simple as they get, guys. But that won’t stop me from sharing some tips! I’ll warn you, though, you may have seen some of these before in my other drink posts:

  • Only use fresh lime juice in this drink – and forever. I have never been a fan of buying lime juice in a bottle because it’s too tart and tastes different to me. You just cannot get the same flavor without using the fresh stuff.
  • Pomegranates are not yet available in my local Walmart so I bought the pomegranate seeds from the produce section rather than seeding a pomegranate myself. If this is the same for you, check the refrigerated fruit area. If you’re struggling to find it, you can use cranberries.
  • Always make sure to top off your drink with ginger ale after it’s been stirred already. The more you stir carbonated drinks, the quicker the fizz will escape.

After you purchase your Schweppes Ginger Ale for this recipe, make sure to upload your receipt to Schweppesholidayga.com to receive a free festive Schweppes scarf (when you spend $10 or more on any Schweppes products)! Giveaway period is 11/15 through 12/22.

I hope you enjoyed today’s festive cocktail. What other seasonal cocktails are you making right now? Let me know in the comments below! And make sure to check out www.schweppesholidaysips.com for even MORE holiday drink inspiration.

Ingredients

  • 2 sprigs rosemary
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 4 ounces vodka
  • 3 ounces pomegranate juice
  • 9 ounces Schweppes Ginger Ale
  • pomegranate seeds for garnish

Instructions

  • Pinch of a few leaves off one sprig of rosemary (about 10). Set aside sprigs for garnish. Place into a pint glass and bruise leaves with a muddler to release the flavor. Add lime juice, vodka, and pomegranate juice. Stir together. Set aside
  • Fill two copper mugs with ice, about 2/3 full. Split juice/vodka mixture among the two mugs. Fill mugs with Schweppes Ginger Ale, to taste. If you want it stronger, add a few splashes. If not, fill to the top (max of 4.5 ounces per mug). Garnish with one sprig of rosemary and a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds per mug.

Description

The most versatile all-purpose weapon since ski poles have existed. When not in use, the folding pole with a pack size of 42 cm fits in any rucksack. When on the mountain, the Tour Stick Vario Carbon can be adjusted between 115 and 135 cm using the Speed ??Lock 2 system certified by TÜV Süd. The strap has a neoprene element which provides additional insulation. "Excellent Cooperation "

We were in Russia again to install flight simulators in Innovation City. We stood at this most excellent, clean and modern hotel and was pleasantly surprised by the staff who spoke English!! They set up our taxis and tours to Red Square Moscow and we had a great time! We were so grateful to be in good hands. Also the restaurant known as Leroy has a super delicious menu to select from . Thanks

Pavel N, Guest Relations Manager at Park Inn by Radisson Odintsovo, responded to this review

"Perfect new businees hotel with restaurant "

The hotel is fresh and new with modern ambiance and friendly staff for Russian norms. Although far outside Moscow the hotel is convenient for airport Vnukovo that is also near Odintsovo in the west. Good restaurant probably best in town

The personnel are service oriented, always willing to assist and make sure your query is resolved. The Leroy restaurant is excellent, absolutely fabulous. The Park Inn Taxi Service is also very flexible and reliant.

Dear Dave, We really very appreciate for your review. Hope to see you again at our hotel. With best wishes, Julia.
