Hardik Pandya's 'returned home after 2 years' comment set to intensify MI vs GT rivalry in IPL 2024

Hardik pandya's mumbai indians will meet former champions gujarat titans in their ipl 2024 opener. pandya rejoined mi from gt ahead of the new season..

Born in Gujarat, but it feels like Mumbai adopted him. After playing two seasons for his home side - the Gujarat Titans (GT), Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya is convinced that he has finally returned home. Pandya is back at Mumbai Indians (MI) - A franchise where he tasted early Indian Premier League (IPL) success as an up-and-coming all-rounder in T20 cricket.

Mumbai Indians then captain Rohit Sharma and Gujarat Titans then captain Hardik Pandya during an IPL match(PTI)

The premier all-rounder was a part of Mumbai's title-winning side on four occasions between 2015 and 2021. Completing his homecoming for IPL 2024, Pandya re-joined Mumbai Indians in an all-cash deal with Gujarat Titans before the mini-auction in Dubai. Hardik also succeeded veteran Rohit Sharma as Mumbai's captain for the new season. The former GT skipper was also Rohit's deputy at the 2023 edition of the ICC World Cup.

Hardik's Mumbai Paltan to meet GT in their IPL 2024 opener

An ankle injury cut short Pandya's campaign at the ICC event last year. A fit-again Pandya recently returned to competitive cricket after his long injury layoff. Speaking to Star Sports ahead of his captaincy debut at MI, Pandya asserted that he returned home after two years. Hardik and Co. will meet GT in their IPL 2024 opener on March 24. "I'm deeply thankful for the immense love and support from fans. It's a blessing beyond words," Hardik said.

Hardik's homecoming remark to intensify MI vs GT rivalry

"Returning to Mumbai Indians feels like coming back to where it all began. From my journey as a young lad in Baroda to Mumbai, this city has taught me growth, instilling in me humility and resilience. The city's love and teachings are invaluable to me, shaping me into the cricketer I am today. Mumbai always challenges you to be better and now with the IPL, I have returned home after 2 years,” added Hardik, who guided Gujarat Titans to IPL glory in 2022.

How Mumbai sealed Hardik deal for IPL 2024

To land Hardik at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians parted ways with Cameron Green as the Australian all-rounder was traded to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for INR 17.5 crore. Hardik kickstarted his IPL journey as an MI rookie when the all-rounder signed for the franchise at INR 10 lakh in 2015. The former GT skipper was released by Mumbai ahead of the mega auction. Hardik guided GT to back-to-back IPL finals after leaving Mumbai.

Pandya's turning point in IPL

"Coming from Baroda, it was a life-changing experience for me when I remember 2015’s IPL. That year was pivotal in my career. Representing Mumbai Indians amidst seasoned players was a turning point for me. When you get a chance to play with such established players on such a big platform, your life changes. I was fortunate enough that I was able to contribute on a much larger scale to the knockout games. Bagging two 'Man of the Match' awards during crucial knockout games was surreal. It marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey for me, it’s a chapter I'll always cherish,” the MI skipper concluded.

Matthew Hayden and Tom Moody pick Hardik Pandya in greatest IPL XI

  • SA vs IND 2023-24
  • Ind vs Aus 2023
  • ICC World Cup 2023

Hardik Pandya

Former CSK opener Matthew Hayden showered praise on Mumbai Indians captain and star all-rounder Hardik Pandya , stating that he would walk into his greatest XI in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. Hardik has been a consistent performer with both bat and ball since his IPL debut in 2015, winning five IPL titles, four with MI and one with GT.

Hardik’s journey in the IPL has seen him play for MI from 2015 to 2021, before leading GT to their maiden IPL title in 2022 as their captain. He then moved back to MI ahead of the IPL 2024 season in a deal worth Rs 15 crore. He will lead the MI replacing former captain Rohit Sharma.

Hayden, who was speaking exclusively to Star Sports on the ‘Star Sports Incredible 16 of IPL’, emphasized the importance of retaining possibilities for Indian talent in the squad. He believes that Hardik’s explosive batting and dynamic fielding ability make him an ideal choice for the all-rounder position in his greatest IPL XI.

“I want to make the most of opportunities for Indian talent instead of going for overseas options. That’s why Hardik Pandya is in my top eleven – he’s a great pick. I’m also choosing Jadeja for his left-arm option and excellent fielding skills. So, at this stage, Hardik is my preferred choice,” Hayden said.

Hardik has amassed 2309 runs over his career with 346 runs last year and 487 runs in the 2022 season. Hayden recognizes the need for a well-rounded all-rounder in the ideal IPL lineup and appreciates Ravindra Jadeja’s left-arm spin and superb fielding abilities.

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody also selected his own version of the greatest IPL XI, highlighting Hardik Pandya as the preferred all-arounder.

Hardik Pandya’s consistent performances with both bat and ball have earned him a spot in Matthew Hayden’s and Tom Moody’s greatest IPL XI of all time. With his explosive batting and dynamic fielding ability, Hardik is a valuable asset to any team and is sure to continue making waves in the IPL for years to come.

Hardik Pandya to captain Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024

Hardik Pandya is back in blue and gold, and this time in a new role as he is all set to lead the record five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians in the 17th season of the Indian Premier League. The former Gujarat Titans skipper shared his vision for the team as he joined Mumbai’s pre-season camp.

Mumbai Indians shared a video on social media in which Hardik Pandya talks about his return to the Mumbai camp and what he is looking forward to as he gets ready to lead the team in IPL 2024.

"The feeling of wearing this colour is very special for me. Journey started here, coming back home and playing is always going to be special. We will make sure we play a brand of cricket which all will be proud of and at the same point of time it’s going to be a ride no one will forget,” said Hardik in the video.

It’s sort of homecoming: Mark Boucher

Head coach Mark Boucher also welcomed Hardik back to the camp as he said, “He certainly knows the changing room better than I do. It’s sort of homecoming for couple of people.”

“He has fitted in really well and is excited for the season. We look forward to having him back and winning some games for Mumbai Indians again,” Boucher can be heard saying in the video.

“At the start of each season, everyone is very excited. There’s a couple of new faces around, so there’s a little bit of nerves as well. We would like building up to the start of the season,” The MI head coach concluded.

Hardik Pandya, who made his IPL debut with Mumbai Indians in 2015, made his way back to the team after he was acquired by Mumbai in an all-cash deal with Gujarat Titans in December 2023. Pandya had moved to Gujarat Titans in 2022 and led them to their debut title in their debut season. He also led the team to their second consecutive IPL final in 2023, which they however lost to MS Dhoni ’s Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets.

Hardik Pandya will be replacing the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma as the captain of Mumbai Indians. Sharma, who led the Indians to victory in a record five IPL seasons, started captaining the team in 2013. Pandya will be looking forward to replicating his successful captaincy stint with Titans, at Mumbai as well.

MI SWOT analysis for IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians target title with Hardik Pandya back, this time as leader

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians are set to begin a new era in IPL 2024 with Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as the skipper following his high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans ahead of the player auction.

MI SWOT analysis for IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians target title with Hardik Pandya back, this time as leader

Few teams have hogged the limelight in the build-up to the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as much as the Mumbai Indians (MI) have, thanks to Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Hardik Pandya’s high-profile, all-cash trade back to the franchise where he began his IPL journey in 2015, and then subsequently taking over the reins of the franchise from Rohit Sharma .

It is the kind of development that can be described as “earth-shattering” for cricket fans, especially those who follow the IPL. For starters, it would’ve been nothing short of a heist for MI to secure Pandya from the Titans, given the all-rounder would’ve been a vital cog in GT’s short as well as long-term goals. MI would then raise even more eyebrows by having Pandya replace Rohit, the man responsible for leading the franchise to five titles.

Read | MI head coach explains why Pandya replaced Rohit as captain

MI certainly are one of the most decorated franchises in the history of the world’s biggest T20 league and are right up there with Chennai Super Kings on trophy count as well as in terms of their overall win-to-loss ratio. And it doesn’t matter whether they win the tournament in the previous year or not, MI somehow end up featuring in the favourites list, thanks to the sheer quality in their ranks across departments.

The recent drama, however, will have left a sour taste in the mouths of MI fans as well as some of the players, especially the seniors who are part of the team’s core. However, whether they can put all of that behind them and work together like a well-oiled unit as they have for a majority of the last decade will determine how far they can go this year.

Much like their arch-rivals CSK, who have caught up with them on trophy count after their triumph last season, MI’s success in the IPL as well as in the CLT20 largely comes down to their ability to have a solid core group in place. It was the group led by Rohit and comprising Kieron Pollard, the Pandya brothers, Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga that played a key role in MI’s trophy-laden years in the 2010s, and the franchise is looking to build a similar core group for the future revolving around captain Pandya, Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera, Tim David, Suryakumar Yadav among others.

And not only is their batting lineup packed with power-hitters and 360-degree players with the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, David and skipper Pandya in the middle order, it is their pace department that got a major boost in the IPL player auction. Not only do MI have the luxury of having Jasprit Bumrah as the leader of their attack, they’ve further strengthened that department by acquiring the services of South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee and Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka, who were among the top wicket-takers in last year’s World Cup.

As for the leadership part, Pandya has proven himself to be just as capable a leader, having led the Gujarat Titans to the title on debut in 2022 followed by a runner-up finish the following season, and the franchise can expect him to work on team strategy with ex-captain Rohit and head coach Mark Boucher and bring more trophies in the future.

While MI have nearly all of their bases covered heading into the 17th season, it is in the role of an overseas spin-bowling all-rounder where the franchise have might their doubts. They would’ve had their sights on Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga, who had surprisingly been released by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the likes of Josh Hazlewood ahead of the player auction. Hasaranga was eventually signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), surprisingly at his base price of Rs 1.5 crore, while MI went for senior Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi.

Nabi’s been a match-winner for the Afghans for more than a decade now and has also set the stage on fire in the IPL as well, especially when he was part of the SRH camp. But Nabi’s catching up on age and is nearly 40 years of age heading into IPL 2024. While no one is questioning his class, there will be doubts over his form unless he’s able to dispel them with bat and/or ball.

Opportunities

Pandya’s ‘homecoming’ to the Mumbai Indians does come as great news for the team and gives a lot of flexibility to the side both in terms of their batting and bowling combinations, making him the perfect replacement for Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who was among MI’s top performers last season and played a crucial role in propelling them to the playoffs.

Pandya is expected to form the kind of solid middle-order bonding with David as he did back in the day with Pollard. The presence of SKY, either at one-down or at No 4, along with the likes of Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera, Dewald Brevis and even all-rounders Nabi and Romario Shepherd gives MI plenty of options for their middle order.

It was their middle order that played a crucial role in the team’s success in the past. And the way things are shaping up at present, it could very well play a critical role in guiding the team to a sixth title.

As crucial as the middle-order’s role is, the spotlight will also be firmly fixed on Rohit and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan at the top of the order, with MI likely to continue with their tried-and-tested opening combination unless Pandya sees things differently.

Though he has been scoring truckloads of runs across formats in recent years, including a century in the third T20I against Afghanistan in January, and was in roaring form as an opener in last year’s World Cup, Rohit’s numbers in recent editions of the IPL leaves a lot to be desired for.

Additionally, Kishan has not played competitive cricket since November and enters this year’s IPL on the back of the off-field drama with the Indian team management and the BCCI that has resulted in the 25-year-old losing his central contract . Whether he can put all of that behind and start afresh in the IPL or not remains to be seen.

It’s not just Kishan who will be playing top-level cricket after months. Pandya, too, hasn’t played international cricket since suffering an ankle injury during the World Cup, and only recently returned to action in the DY Patil T20 Cup in Navi Mumbai. How he performs on his return for the Mumbai Indians is also something that will be keenly followed this season.

Player to watch out

Gerald Coetzee — The South African pacer was one of the top performers in the World Cup last year, collecting 20 wickets in ICC’s showpiece event less than a year after making his international debut. Whether Coetzee goes on to become a long-term pace prospect for MI and one of the league’s top stars down the road will somewhat depend on how he performs in his debut season this year.

Season prediction

After a couple of difficult seasons, including a bottom-of-the-table finish in 2022, MI had bounced back with a much better display last season — sneaking into the playoffs towards the end of the league stage and going as far as Qualifier 2 before being shown the door by then-defending champions Gujarat Titans.

With a new, and proven, leader at the helm along with a few smart purchases which highlight the franchise’s desire to build a team for the future while taking care of the present, there’s no reason to believe MI cannot challenge defending champions CSK, GT and the other heavyweights for the title this year.

Predicted playing XI

Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wk), N Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya (c), Tim David, Piyush Chawla, Kumar Kartikeya Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Madhwal, Gerald Coetzee

Retained players: Hardik Pandya (c), Akash Madhwal, Arjun Tendulkar, Dewald Brevis, Ishan Kishan, Jason Behrendorff, Jasprit Bumrah, Kumar Kartikeya Singh, N. Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera, Piyush Chawla, Rohit Sharma, Romario Shepherd, Shams Mulani, Surya Kumar Yadav, Tim David, Vishnu Vinod.

Purchased at IPL 2024 Auction: Gerald Coetzee (Rs 5 crore), Dilshan Madhushanka (Rs 4.6 crore), Shreyas Gopal (Rs 20 lakh), Nuwan Thushara (Rs 4.80 crore), Namandhir Singh (Rs 20 lakh), Anshul Kamboj (Rs 20 lakh), Mohammad Nabi (Rs 1.5 crore), Shivalik Sharma (Rs 20 lakh)

Hardik Pandya drops huge ‘unforgettable IPL 2024 ride’ statement, opens up on bond with Lasith Malinga, Mark Boucher

' src=

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has fired a timely warning to other teams ahead of the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). After proving his captaincy with Gujarat Titans, the India allrounder will be desperate to replicate his success with the Mumbai-based outfit.

He will be under immense pressure to deliver as captain after replacing Rohit Sharma, one of the most decorated skippers in the history of the IPL. Rohit led Mumbai Indians from 2013 to 2023 and guided them to a record five titles. However, Mumbai have not won the IPL or qualified for the final since winning the tournament in 2020 and decided to sack Rohit as the captain.

Unsurprisingly, Hardik Pandya will be under pressure to do well as a captain. And ahead of IPL 2024, the India star has made it clear that he is delighted with his return to Mumbai Indians and is excited for the forthcoming season. In a video posted by Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya expressed his delight over returning home.

“The feeling of wearing this color is very special for me. Journey started here, coming back and playing, coming back home, which is always going to be special,” said Hardik Pandya.

Speaking further, he opened up his relationship with head coach Mark Boucher and bowling coach Lasith Malinga before saying that Mumbai Indians want to enjoy an unforgettable ride in IPL 2024.

“Mali (Malinga) has been my brother from the start and Mark has been wonderful. We will make sure we play a brand of cricket which all will be proud of and at the same point of time, that’s going to be a ride no one will forget,”  he added.

Watch as Hardik Pandya opens up on his return to Mumbai Indians:

"My journey started here. Coming back home & playing is always going to be special." – @hardikpandya7 💙 #OneFamily #MumbaiIndians pic.twitter.com/GrtVmjl7Xd — Mumbai Indians (@mipaltan) March 15, 2024

The onus will be on Hardik Pandya to end Mumbai Indians’ wait for a record-extending sixth IPL title. While Mumbai struggled in the last few years, the allrounder did well as a captain with Gujarat Titans. In 2022, he led Gujarat to their maiden IPL title before helping them to a runners-up finish in 2023.

IPL 2024 is scheduled to get underway on March 22. Mumbai will open their campaign on March 24 against Gujarat Titans.

Islamic State releases photo of alleged attackers behind Russia shooting

Islamic State released a photo on Saturday of what it said were the four attackers behind a shooting rampage that killed at least 143 people in a concert hall near Moscow, the militant group's Amaq news agency said in a statement on Telegram.

It is already obvious that we are faced not just with a carefully and cynically planned terrorist attack, but with the organised mass murder of peaceful defenceless people. The criminals were cold-blooded and purposefully going to kill, shoot our citizens at point-blank range - our children. Like the Nazis who once carried out massacres in the occupied territories, they planned to arrange a demonstrative execution, a bloody act of intimidation. All the perpetrators, organisers and those who ordered this crime will be justly and inevitably punished. Whoever they are, whoever is guiding them. I repeat, we will identify and punish everyone who stands behind the terrorists, who prepared this atrocity, this strike against Russia, against our people.

IPL 2024 MI Preview: Mumbai Indians eye smooth transition under Hardik Pandya

Ipl 2024, mumbai indians team preview: hardik pandya will have his task cut out as he will lead a team full of superstars for the first time. the former gujarat titans captain has enough firepower in his squad to inspire the team to their 6th title..

Listen to Story

Hardik Pandya

  • Hardik Pandya will lead Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024
  • Rohit Sharma's role as a batter will be key to Mumbai's success
  • Mumbai are sweating over the fitness of Suryakumar Yadav

Hardik Pandya taking over the reins of Mumbai Indians from Rohit Sharma is the biggest change in leadership at an Indian Premier League franchise, induced by the team, since Sourav Ganguly’s time came to an end at Kolkata Knight Riders in 2010. While Hardik returning to Mumbai Indians through a historic trade was a surprise in itself, the 5-time champions announcing him as captain led to mixed reactions from the fans of the franchise.

Hardik Pandya was not the most popular man in Mumbai after the change in captaincy as a large section of the Mumbai Indians fans were not entirely happy with Rohit Sharma, the India captain, taking a backseat, especially after the heroics in the ODI World Cup last year.

Yes, Mumbai Indians have got the auction right after having struggled to get the combination right, over the last few years. They have assembled another power-packed unit capable of reaching the top four. However, a lot will depend on how the team dynamics pan out over the next 8 weeks.

IPL 2024: Full Coverage

CAN HARDIK SHUN THE OUTSIDE NOISE?

Eyebrows were raised when Hardik Pandya was appointed as the captain of the Gujarat Titans in the team’s inaugural edition in the IPL. Hardik did not have any prior experience of leading a senior side, leave alone an IPL franchise. However, he surprised quite a few with his leadership, inspiring the Titans to title triumph in their debut.

IPL 2024: Where to buy tickets for Mumbai Indians matches?

However, managing a star-studded side like Mumbai Indians will be a true test of Hardik’s character in IPL 2024. At Gujarat Titans, it was a completely different set-up as Hardik, with able support from Ashish Nehra, had to lead a team that was majorly dominated by budding talents.

At the same time, it would be unwise to assume that Hardik Pandya will struggle as captain of one of the biggest franchises in the history of the league. Not long ago, Hardik was earmarked as the next India captain in white-ball formats.

Speaking to the press for the first time since taking over as Mumbai Indians captain, Hardik gave a glimpse of the dynamics in the dressing room , saying that Rohit Sharma will be his go-to-man in terms of seeking tactical inputs.

"It won't be awkward or anything different. It will be a nice experience. I have played all my career under his captaincy. I know he is going to have a hand on my shoulder always, throughout the season," Hardik said.

Yet, head coach Mark Boucher ducking a few tough questions only adds intrigue to how the team dynamics will play out at Mumbai Indians in the new season.

HOW DID MUMBAI INDIANS FARE AT THE AUCTION?

Unlike the last two years, Mumbai Indians got it spot on at the auction. Before they went to the bidding table in Dubai, the 5-time champions completed two of their biggest moves - trade in Hardik Pandya and trade out Cameron Green, allowing themselves enough money in the bank to fix the remaining pieces of the jigsaw puzzle at the auction.

Mumbai Indians also traded in dangerous West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd from Lucknow Super Giants.

One of their most interesting additions is veteran Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi. On spin-friendly pitches, Nabi can be a handful with his wily off-spin and his improved ability to consistently hit the big ones will come in handy for Mumbai Indians.

They signed the services of a gun all-rounder in South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee and roped in two young and exciting Sri Lankan fast-bowling talents in Dilshan Madushanka, who had a dream run during the ODI World Cup in India, and yorker specialist Nuwan Thushara, who reminds fans of Lasith Malinga, their bowling coach himself. However, South Africa’s U19 World Cup star Kwena Mpahaka was roped in as a replacement.

Mumbai Indians Squad IPL 2024

Batters: Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Nehal Wadhera, Dewald Brevis, Tim David, Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, Shivalik Sharma

All-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Shams Mulani, Mohammad Nabi, Kumar Kartikeya, Arjun Tendulkar, Luke Wood, Romario ShepherdSuryak, Gerald Coetzee.

Wicketkeepers: Ishan Kishan, Vishnu Vinod.

Bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Madhwal, Shreyas Gopal, Piyush Chawla, Nuwan Thushara, Anshul Kamboj, Kwena Maphaka.

Mumbai Indians: Player Availability and Team News

Mumbai Indians are sweating over the availability of Suryakumar Yadav , who is yet to receive a clearance from the National Cricket Academy.

Suryakumar Yadav suffered an ankle injury during a T20I series in which he captained India last year. He also underwent surgery for sports hernia earlier this year and has been recovering under the watchful eyes of the NCA medical team.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma seems to have recovered from back stiffness that ruled him out of the final day’s play in the 5th Test against England in Dharamsala.

MI: KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR

Rohit Sharma: Can Rohit do what MS Dhoni did with Rising Pune Super Giant in 2017? After losing captaincy, Dhoni contributed with the bat and looked at his best under Steve Smith. A proud cricketer, Rohit will be looking to unleash his full potential as an opening batter for Mumbai Indians at the top of the order without the added responsibility of leading the side.

Ishan Kishan: All eyes will be on Ishan Kishan as the Mumbai Indians opener will be looking to prove a point to the BCCI and the national team selectors after having lost his central contract. With the T20 World Cup coming up, Ishan needs big runs if he is to stay in the race for a spot in the Indian squad.

Tim David : Mumbai Indians needs the big Australian to fire in the middle-order. The availability of Hardik Pandya will give David the bushion that he missed last season. Expect some fireworks from the bat of David this season.

MI: Predicted Playing XIs in IPL 2024

Option 1: Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Tim David, Romario Shepherd, Piyush Chawla, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Madhwal, Nuwan Thushara.

IPL 2024: Hardik Pandya Welcomes Kwena Maphaka to Mumbai Indian Squad | WATCH

M umbai Indians, the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, share various social media content, keeping their fans updated about the major developments in the team. In a recent video on their official site, the franchise announced the arrival of Kwena Maphaka in Mumbai. The clip also featured some glimpses of the team’s practice sessions at the Wankhede Stadium. It also captured some excited fans, who gathered at the Mandwa Bandar where Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan and several other players were spotted enjoying a ferry ride on Tuesday. MI bowling coach Lasith Malinga was also part of the group.

Speaking about Kwena Maphaka, the 17-year-old South African pacer has been roped in by Mumbai Indians as a replacement for Dilshan Madushanka, who has been ruled out of the entire 2024 campaign. The Sri Lankan speedster will miss the tournament due to a hamstring injury that he picked up during a tour of Bangladesh earlier this month. To fill his vacant place in the team, Maphaka has been called up.

Mumbai secured the signing of Madushanka for Rs 4.6 crore at the 2024 IPL auction in December last year. The Sri Lankan speedster, known as a powerplay specialist, was expected to feature in Mumbai’s playing eleven this season. His absence has enabled the opportunity for Maphaka to secure his first IPL contract, that too with one of the most successful franchises of the tournament.

Kwena Maphaka first hit the headlines with his enthralling bowling performance at the ICC U-19 World Cup earlier this year. He was named the Player of the Tournament after picking 21 wickets for hosts South Africa. Before debuting in the U-19 side, Maphaka had also played for South Africa A and South Africa Emerging teams.

On Thursday, Mumbai Indians dropped a video on Instagram where Kwena Maphaka was seen expressing his excitement over his IPL contract. He is yet to acquire his school degree and is currently in his final year. Maphaka goes to the St Stithians school in Johannesburg where South African pacer Kagiso Rabada had also pursued his studies.

After Mapakha was asked how he would manage his studies, the teenager said, “Yes, it’s going to be a difficult time. But it’s a lot of extra lessons and a lot of hard work.” He has come to India with his mother, who also featured in the Instagram video. She said, “It’s an honour. We are very blessed to have Kwena be a part of such a big family of Mumbai Indians and I hope he is going to fit in and be welcomed.”

Mumbai Indians have built a formidable bowling attack for the 2024 IPL and the inclusion of Kwena Maphaka has added more strength. They have six specialist fast bowlers in the team including Indian star Jasprit Bumrah. Eyes will be on another South African pacer Gerald Coetzee who was signed by the Mumbai franchise for Rs 5 crore at the last auction.
