Black Spiders Drop New Single and Tour Dates

Black Spiders Drop New Single and Tour Dates

Against all odds and fighting off whatever the world hurls at them, Sheffield rock legends Black Spiders just will not die. Their forthcoming and fourth album ‘Can’t Die, Won’t Die’  is a triumphant howl right into the face of adversity and features 42 minutes of back-street trouble, produced by regular studio  compadre ,  Matt Elliss , set for worldwide release via  Spinefarm May 12 th , the band’s first campaign with the label.

Today, the band are setting loose a brand-new and utterly monstrous track from the album, with the new single ‘Alright, Alright, Alright’. A three-and-a-half-minute rock stomper, it delves deep into the psyche of frontman Pete Spiby and takes a peek into what goes on inside his head when he’s fast asleep.

Noted for their unswerving dedication to the music, the middle finger (or two) and the rousing rock ‘n’ roll slogan  (“EAT THUNDER, SHIT LIGHTNING!”) ,   the  Spiders  are the perfect low-slung machine to raise a glass or clench a tattooed fist to, and  ‘Can’t Die, Won’t Die’  – 12 new tracks including  ‘Destroyer’  and  ‘It Is What It Is’ , all measured pace and power, and  ‘Driving My Rooster’ , a race towards the cliff edge – is sure to add more burnt tread to their tyres.

Black Spiders have also confirmed that they will play a special album launch show via Record Junkee in Sheffield on May 19 th . The performance is free to those who pre-order the album from HERE :

In support of their studio albums (the most recent of which hit the No. 7 spot on the UK Independent Albums chart), plus a fistful of EPs,  Black Spiders  have toured with a variety of rock’s most riff-hungry sons, the likes of Volbeat, Danzig, Airbourne and Monster Magnet, and appeared at all of the UK’s leading festivals, including Download, Sonisphere and Bloodstock.

Their plan is to spend much of 2023 out on the road, and it’s a strategy that is for once, going to plan.

Catch Black Spiders live at the following dates on their September tour.

black spiders tour 2023

Review by Gary Spiller for MPM

Universes collide here at The Patriot this evening in what reads like a previously undiscovered edition of the ’96 ‘DC versus Marvel / Marvel versus DC’ crossover series.

Arachnid versus Cephalopod right here in the valleys. From the inky depths of the ocean and the most tenebrous of recesses of the cave. It all adds up to a monstrous clash of the titans.

The grassroots scene is a vibrant one with a wide array of bands vying for the ‘spotlight’ up and down the country. There’s a good number of venues too but the challenge facing them is only too real. Whilst the likes of Maiden pack out the large arenas there is a tangible reluctance for the punter to look across to notice what is happening at their local.

Bucking the trend is Crumlin’s Patriot – expanded in lockdown – with a loyal, local faithful that is bolstered by a travelling contingent attracted by venue’s growing reputation as a ‘place to play.’ From the likes of established artists like Gun, Ginger Wildheart and Cherie Currie to the underground talents of Cardinal Black, Trucker Diablo and Hell’s Addiction make no bones about it The Patriot is rocking!

Tonight’s opening act are fast making a name for themselves. Having just released their debut album ‘MCLXXX’ King Kraken are pursuing legends of their own making. Just a few weeks ago they transformed Merthyr Tydfil’s Redhouse with shades of green with their sold-out album launch show. Their music is hard and uncompromising, hewn from the same rock that their forebearers mined the ‘black gold.’ Yet it’s swift and agile like the Architeuthis upon which the Kraken legend is sworn.

black spiders tour 2023

This evening’s set is short and punchy, rattling through nine tracks in quick succession. The Kraken is a polished affair nowadays, the hard work and graft reaping glorious dividends in the live realm. It’s a suite of heavy metal, affluent in its underworldly darkness, drawn in main from the debut long-player with a couple of tracks extracted from their self-titled 2019 EP.

black spiders tour 2023

From the low rumblings of opening track ‘Devil’s Night’ through to the additional bonus, at set-end, of ‘Freak’ a tempestuous roar permeates from the catacombs. The rumbustious ‘Green Terror’ is intense in its powerage with a rumour abounding that certain paint manufacturers are now considering offering a Kraken shade of ‘vert.’ Alloying Slayer and Metallica in a ferocious Orange Goblin broth ‘Haddonfield ‘78’ is as venomous as the riled cobra.

black spiders tour 2023

Industrial ‘Under The Sun’ takes us right up to the imposing ‘Walls of Jericho’, a healthily sized crowd lap up the broad, metalliferous groove being laid down. “Try to save your soul” the lyrics encourage in ‘Proctor’s Ledge’, the deal has already seemingly been penned.

The highly concentrated fury of ‘Veins’ evokes the ever-welcome ghosts of Motorhead, horns are raised in devout respect. The horde are appeased with the osmium-dense metalliferous offerings of ‘Castle Of Bone.’ The Sabbath-esque undercurrent pulling under even the strongest of willed. The Kraken extends a welcome to its watery lair, one taken up by many within the Patriot this evening.

With just a few short weeks to go until the Black Spiders were due to start this tour all was in doubt. Rocked to the core by the departure of not one, but two guitarists the Spiders were shaken to the core. Undeterred and as ever resilient co-founders Pete Spiby and Adam Irwin, along with the irrepressible Wyatt Wendel, have snared the six-string talents of the mysteriously monikered J’Evans and D’ron. Thus, fully restored to their ten-legged colossal self the Spiders march on brandishing their version of Sheffield steel. Most appropriate given the forthcoming album is titled ‘Cant Die, Won’t Die.’

black spiders tour 2023

Without further ado middle digits are raised and we can chant “Fuck you Black Spiders!” as the five cogs that comprise the machinery of this beast stride onstage. Guitars and bass, low-slung, explode with the mind warping riffing of opening salvo ‘Fly In The Soup.’ Accelerating Chuck Berry’s rock n’ roll through the roof we’re summoned to ‘Stick It To The Man.’ There’s as much punch as 12 rounds with Ali herein!

We given a sneak peek into May’s new release with the frenetically paced rodent rocker ‘A Rat Is A Rat.’ Rallying Crumlin frontman Pete Spiby lauds their support “How about King Kraken?!?” before continuing “Alright, alright, alright! Thanks to Ang and Aled for having us!”

black spiders tour 2023

Inspired by a certain US band ‘Kiss Tried To Kill Me’ is loud, brutish and delightfully uncompromising and beyond good for it. Apparently, it wasn’t Ace’s fault. The march of the tombs, the ticking of the clock, storm clouds let forth in the doom of ‘Death Comes Creepin.’ A remapped V12 demon hollering from the cataclysm.

Latest single ‘Hot Wheels’ is rebellious NWOBHM fuelled in its bullish, taurus delivery and is rightfully well received. A swift “1-2-3-4” from the ‘Octopus’ behind his brightly illuminated kit and The Spiders rip into the brutalist rock n’ roll architecture of ‘Give Em What They Want.’ Piledriving forces pummel all to fine-grained dust.

black spiders tour 2023

“Who’d like a bit of Viking in them?” asks Pete ahead of the pounding Norse-fired fusion of ‘Blood Of The Kings.’ Bones suitably rattled the Spiders have wind in their sails as restless spirits stir out on the windswept moorlands with their heavy groove front the maelstrom.

Striking a mighty, cogent spell ‘Wizard Shall Not Kill Wizard’ ensures the Spiders strike their prey, snared in the web. ‘Creatures’ is a demonic stampede whilst ‘Stay Down’ does quite the reverse ascending at breakneck velocity never faltering. The Patriot ensemble indulge in the time-honoured “FUBS” with middle fingers diligently raised before the nebulous strains of ‘Stabbed In The Back’ bring further Spider mayhem. “One finger, two fingers or five finger shuffle!” jokes Pete.

black spiders tour 2023

The Motorhead-injected rampage that is ‘Teenage Knife Gang’ heads the set up to its crescendo as the Ramones / Motorhead crossover of ‘What Good Is A Rock Without A Roll’ blows the roof clean off its footings. You simply can’t have one without the other. Eat thunder, shit lightning! The Spiders have well and truly left their mark!

28 rock bands named after real people:

Rock legends Pink Floyd took their moniker from the given names of two Piedmont blues artists that Syd Barrett had in his record collection, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Pink Floyd - Pink Anderson and Floyd Council

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd are named after high school gym teacher Leonard Skinner who taught Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, and Bob Burns at Robert E. Lee High School in Florida in the 1960s. Skinner was reportedly notorious for enforcing the school's policy against boys having long hair, and the Lynyrd Skynyrd band name was seen as an act of rebellion against him.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Leonard Skinner

The Yardbirds

The influential British band's name was partially inspired by the nickname of American jazz saxophonist Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker. It's also the name given to rail yard hobos in Jack Kerouac's 1957 novel On the Road.

The Yardbirds - Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker

Jazz musician Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker in 1955 – the year of his death aged just 34.

New York punk trailblazers Ramones were named by Dee Dee Ramone (Douglas Glenn Colvin) after Paul McCartney's briefly adopted pseudonym Paul Ramon in his Silver Beetles days in 1960.

Ramones - Paul Ramon with The Silver Beetles

Paul McCartney (aka Paul Ramon) performs with The Silver Beetles in 1960. John Lennon and George Harrison were also in the group.

The Hollies

The Hollies' co-founder Graham Nash revealed in a 2009 interview that they coined their band just moments before they were due to step on stage at the Oasis Club in Manchester in December 1962. The name comes from their admiration for Buddy Holly.

The Hollies - Buddy Holly

Rock legend Buddy Holly in the late 1950s who inspired The Hollies band name. He died aged just 22 in the 3rd February 1959 plane crash that also claimed the lives of Ritchie Valens, "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson and their pilot Roger Peterson. It was later known as 'The Day the Music Died.'

Previously called City Kidd, the Sacramento rockers renamed themselves Tesla in homage to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla during the recording of their debut album 'Mechanical Resonance' in 1986. Some of the band's song and album titles nod towards Nikola Tesla too.

Tesla - Nikola Tesla

An 1890 photo of 34-year-old inventor Nikola Tesla. He lived until he was 84 and was famously portrayed by David Bowie in the 2006 movie The Prestige.

Jethro Tull

With Ian Anderson struggling to settle on a name for his band in the late 1960s (names included Navy Blue, Ian Henderson's Bag o' Nails, and Candy Coloured Rain), a member of the band's booking agent's staff christened them Jethro Tull after the 18th-century agriculturist.

Jethro Tull, who helped to bring about the British Agricultural Revolution of the 18th century. He perfected a horse-drawn seed drill in 1701 that economically sowed the seeds in neat rows, and later developed a horse-drawn hoe. What a guy!

Creedence Clearwater Revival

In 1967 the band toyed with renaming themselves Muddy Rabbit, Gossamer Wump, and Creedence Nuball and the Ruby, however they settled on Creedence Clearwater Revival with the 'Creedence' a nod towards guitarist Tom Fogerty's friend Credence Newball.

Crazy Horse

Formerly known as The Rockets, the American band became known as Crazy Horse in 1969 when they first teamed up with Neil Young. The band was named after the 19th Century Sioux Tribe leader Crazy Horse.

The Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Work began on the sculpture in 1948 and it's still unfinished.

Billy Gibbons took direct inspiration from blues artists BB King and ZZ Hill as he liked the way the initials sounded in their stage names. He was initially going to call his band ZZ King but became concerned it sounded to similar to the original artist. Gibbons ultimately settled on ZZ Top as he remarked the "king is at the top."

ZZ Top - BB King and ZZ Hill

Late blues icons BB King and ZZ Hill.

Greta Van Fleet

The retrogressive rockers are named after a bluegrass musician called Gretna VanFleet, who hails from their home town of Frankenmuth, Michigan. Although Greta Van Fleet didn't initially ask her for permission, the 93-year-old subsequently gave them her blessing.

Molly Hatchet

Just like their fellow Jacksonville rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet were named after a real person. Molly Hatchet's moniker is more steeped in history, however, as they're named after an infamous 17th-century axe murderess dubbed 'hatchet molly'.

Leicester indie rockers Kasabian take their name from Linda Kasabian who was a member of Charles Manson's cult, the Manson Family, in the late 1960s and 1970s. Linda Kasabian was present at both the Tate and LaBianca murders committed by the cult in 1969, but received immunity for her testimony as a key witness in the trial of Manson.

Kasabia - Linda Kasabian

Mookie Blaylock (Pearl Jam)

Huge fans of the New York Jets basketball player Mookie Blaylock, the Seattle rockers decided to name their band in his honour. After playing a series of shows as Mookie Blaylock, they renamed themselves Pearl Jam in October '90 after signing to Epic Records.

Franz Ferdinand

Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand are named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria whose assassination in Sarajevo in June 1914 sparked World War I.

Dead Kennedys

The politicised punk rockers' somewhat controversial name references the deceased members of the Kennedy family, including the assassinated President John F. Kennedy. Guitarist East Bay Ray said they weren't trying to insult the Kennedys. "The assassinations were in much more poor taste than our band," he argued. "We actually respect the Kennedy family. When JFK was assassinated, when Martin Luther King was assassinated, when RFK was assassinated, the American Dream was assassinated. Our name is actually homage to the American Dream."

Dead Kennedys - John F Kennedy

The 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in November 1963.

Kings of Leon

The three Followill brothers (Caleb, Jared and Nathan) and their cousin Matthew named Kings of Leon after their grandfather Leon Followill, who died in January 2014.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre

Founder and leader Anton Newcombe named his band after late-great Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones and the 1978 Jonestown Massacre.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Brian Jones

Late-great Rolling Stones guitarist, founder and original leader Brian Jones in 1964.

Jimmy Eat World

Jimmy Eat World indirectly take their moniker from guitarist Tom Linton's brother Jim. He explained in 1999: "My brother Jim beat up my younger brother Ed, and Jim ran into his room and locked his door, and Ed drew this picture that said 'Jimmy Eat World', and it was a picture of him eating the world. My brother Jim is kind of a big guy. A stupid name."

The Dandy Warhols

The Oregon alt-rockers' name is a play on the name of revered American pop artist Andy Warhol.

The Dandy Warhols - Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was an artist and experimental filmmaker and one of the founders of the Pop Art movement.

Melvins are named after a man called Melvin who was frontman Buzz Osborne's supervisor when he worked at a supermarket in Montesano, Washington. The real Melvin was widely disliked by staff and Osborne thought it would be a gloriously ridiculous name for his band.

James Gang are named after the 19th-century gang of American outlaws led by Jesse James. The band's final album 'Jesse Comes Home' references Jesse James and the artwork features a painting of the folk hero riding off into the sunset.

James Gang - Jesse James

Jesse James (5th September 1847 to 3rd April 1882) was an American outlaw, gang leader, bank robber, train robber, and murderer from the state of Missouri and the most famous member of the James-Younger Gang.

The Dillinger Escape Plan

Morris Plains metalcore merchants The Dillinger Escape Plan were christened by their friend Matt Makowski after he watched a documentary about 1930s bank robber John Dillinger, who made multiple escapes from jail.

TaylorMade 2023 Spider Tour Series Putters

TaylorMade announced the new Spider Tour Series putters today, based on their popular Spider Tour and Spider Tour X mallet putter models. The series will include new versions of those popular mallets as well as completely new Spider Tour V and Spider Tour Z putters.

What You Need to Know

  • TaylorMade is releasing a new series of putters based upon their iconic Spider Tour mallet.
  • The line features two classic head shapes and three new models.
  •  All Spider Tour Series putters feature new and classic TaylorMade putter technologies.
  • At shops Oct. 27 for $349.99

There will even be one more in the series: the Spider Tour Series S, arriving next spring.

Rereleasing an old, popular putter model is a dicey scenario. On one hand, you are providing customers with an updated version of a putter they love. When you grab one of these and roll it in the shop, it’s like reconnecting with an old friend.

On the other hand, re-releasing old putters has potential pitfalls. First, you can’t just roll out exactly the same old model. You need to tweak the design enough to make it seem new but not so much that it loses the flavor of the original.

The other danger is that, if you keep rolling out the same model year after year, you run the risk of being branded by the consumer as lazy . Giving it a new paint scheme will not be enough.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series line-up

Does this new Spider Tour Series line have that right mixture of nostalgia and next level?  Let’s see how TaylorMade balances the old with the new, the classic with the innovative.

The 2023 TaylorMade Spider’s Keeper Technologies

“All these pitches to choose from. Maybe I ought to try something different this time.”-Jake Taylor, Major League (1989)

So many great lines in that movie; Bob Uecker’s announcing is the stuff of legend. That quote jumped into my head when thinking about the Spider Tour Series. We have seen quite a few permutations of the Spider in recent years. Many of them included pretty cool ideas like the sliding weights in the Spider GT Max and the more wing-like design of the Spide r GTX .

Perhaps a company does not always need to roll out the next big thing. Sometimes they need to forget about the curveball and throw the heater.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series:  Pure Roll Face

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series Pure Roll

What are the aspects of the original Spider Tour that TaylorMade has incorporated into the new Spider Tour Series ? First on the list is the Pure Roll insert. No, I did not actually mean the more recent Pure Roll2. The putters in this new line will feature the soft, Surlyn insert in the original Spider Tour putter.

I wonder if consumer and tour player requests drove this decision. We’ve seen it before. Remember when Odyssey got tired of people asking if they could bring back the White Hot insert? I like the softer feel of the Pure Roll insert versus the firmer PureRoll2.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series True Path Alignment

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series line-up

These new Spider Tour Series putters feature TaylorMade’s patented True Path alignment system. Of course, this high-contrast alignment system was not present in the original Spider Tour. It first appeared in the Spider Tour X line.

Regardless, the True Path system is a classic Spider design. If you are going to bring back the best Spider elements, True Path’s inclusion is a no-brainer.

TaylorMade 2023 Spider Tour Series Putters: The Hole Story

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series line-up

Another significant design element with all of the Spider Tour Series putters is probably the one that many people will overlook. When you compare the Spider Tour Series designs to the most recent Spider putters, it is nigh impossible to ignore the return of holes in the body.

Cut-out designs are a Spider staple. The holes only went away when TaylorMade experimented with the fang-shaped spiders. As recently as 2021, all of the TaylorMade Spider models were full of holes . We just lost them for the past few cycles when TaylorMade shifted to a wing with a turtle-shell plan for the Spider GT and Spider GTX .

The holes are back. Did you ever think about the purpose of the holes? If you said that the holes affect the distribution of weight in the head, you win the prize!

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series X address

Improving MOI (moment of inertia) is a baseline goal for many putter smiths. If you can make the perimeter of the putter heavier than the center, the MOI and the stability of the head increase. Last time I checked, empty space is pretty light, especially compared to steel.

The goal of the hole-y quest is to incorporate the empty spaces into the design so they mesh with the aesthetics, not overpower it. PING’s IN Series of putters had lots of holes, and probably better MOI because of it, but they looked pretty awful.

As a long-time Spider Tour player, the holes never bothered me. I noticed them but didn’t ever focus on them. TaylorMade did a great job of integrating the negative spaces into the designs.

Now that we’ve looked at the key historical elements, let’s see what is new with the Spider Tour Series putters.

The TaylorMade Spider Tour Weighting Schemes

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series T rear weights

When you look at the bottom of the putters, you see two very different weighting plans. For the Spider Tour and Tour X , the weights are in the classic rear positions. I believe this positioning is the reason that the Spider Tour felt so familiar.

The new models, the Spider Tour V and Spider Tour Z , have weights up front. TaylorMade has offered this configuration before in the Spider FCG but never as a “pure” Spider shape. By moving the weights forward, the center of gravity shifts forward as well. This gives the mallet more of a blade-weight scheme. It’s not a blade but it will feel more like one than the mallets with the weights at the rear.

Test it out. Roll the new Spider Tour X (rear weights) with the similarly shaped Spider Tour Z (front weights). That is the best way to see the effect. Those of you that goofed around with the weight positions with the Spider GT Max last year likely know what I am talking about.

How important was weight position in the Spider Tour Series to TaylorMade? So important that they included center-of-gravity position measurements in the promotion of the line. I’ve seen lots of MOI values published over the years but I don’t recall seeing specific CG numbers.

Center of Gravity Position: TaylorMade Spider Tour Series Putters

  • Spider Tour T: 35mm from face
  • Spider Tour X: 33mm from face
  • Spider Tour V: 27mm from face
  • Spider Tour Z: 29mm from face

The other new design element that you can’t see is that there is a HYBAR Echo Damper behind the face. This is the same type of vibration-dampening that TaylorMade puts in their game-improvement Stealth irons. Its purpose is to remove unwanted vibrations and improve the sound at impact.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series Putter Models

Spider tour.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series line-up

Spider Tour is one of the most recognizable shapes in the putting world, accounting for dozens of victories on professional tours across the globe. TaylorMade is breathing new life into the company’s most popular creations with enhanced materials, a new color and refined weight distribution.

-TaylorMade Golf

The Spider Tour is the putter that brought all of the others to the party. This beautifully boxy beast is exactly what you expect it to be. It sits like a sleek brick behind the ball. When you swing it, you feel the rearward weights propel the head through impact.

To me, the Spider Tour is an iconic mallet . With this redo, TaylorMade hit the balance of old and new dead on. I’m still not sure that I like the True Path more than my old parallel-line alignment scheme but I don’t hate it. Overall, the True Path blends in nicely with the original Spider Tour body shape.

Gallery image

One more item of note about the Spider Tour : There will be a counterbalanced version available. I believe that this 38-inch Spider Tour will be one of many counterbalanced mallets we will see in manufacturers’ upcoming putter offerings. Thanks, Ricky!

Spider Tour Series X

Made popular as the putter of choice for Rory McIlroy, the Spider X shape has been one of the most sought-after in the franchise. It was originally designed to convert players who loved blade putters into mallets, using a compact shape and modern look to deliver a more blade-like feel with the added benefits of alignment and forgiveness that are incumbent to Spider putters.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series X

The “Rory Spider” is another natural inclusion in the Spider Tour Series line-up. The Spider X is a Tour and amateur staple. Rory is the one whomTaylorMade will mention but you probably remember the 66-foot bomb Jon Rahm dropped with a Spider X to beat DJ in a playoff at the 2020 BMW.

The Spider X design is Tour-proven and then some.

This Spider Tour Series version of the Spider X is not quite the same putter. Sure, it has the same, more rounded, rear profile and is a little more compact overall. That’s all the same. But when you flip it over, you see a big change.

The weights have moved.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series X sole

Previous Spider X models had weights at the rear corners—little black rectangles bolted to the back edges. With the new Spider Tour Series X, those corners are weight-free. The weights have crept forward a bit, bringing the center of gravity more forward.

What does moving the weights/CG accomplish? It should make this Spider X feel more like a blade. It will rotate a bit more and not feel as rear-pushed as the Spider Tour. This weight position change seems minor but this may be the Princess and the Pea factor that steers original Spider X players away from the new version.

Or they will just love it even more …

Gallery image

Spider Tour Series V

Spider Tour V eliminates the wing structure and creates a more modern streamlined look. It is the smallest putter in shape and size in the lineup, providing the most rotation of the bunch.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series V

TaylorMade says that the Spider Tour Series V is the smallest Spider in the Tour Series line. Yes, it is smaller than the other mallets but it is not really a petite mallet. It is missing all of the rear edge material so that makes it look smaller. Also, this little ramp of a mallet is the one with the most forward CG, making it  feel the most blade-like of the bunch.

Gallery image

The weights are all the way forward and those pesky rear bulges have been shaved off. I am curious to see if that is the model that can truly act as the gateway Spider for players who traditionally game blade putters .

Spider Tour Series Z

Spider Tour Z is one of two new shapes in this lineup, paying homage to the Spider Tour with a wing shaped back. The perimeter of this putter sits low in the ground to provide a comfortable feeling at address and help frame the golf ball for easy alignment. TSS weights on this model are placed very far forward to encourage more face rotation and a blade-like feel.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series Z

The Spider Tour Series Z has me the most curious. The overall shape looks a lot like the Spider X—until you look at it from the side. From that angle, you can see that the perimeter ring has been squashed flat.

I do like how the Spider Z looks at address. Everything lines up nicely in the middle of the putter at address, maybe flattening the edges steers the eyes to the middle. I initially had concerns that the looks were going to make me expect a rear-weighted mallet feeling, but the weights are in the front so it will feel like a blade.

This amalgamation of blade and mallet, squared and squished works. My eyes are drawn to the center and the front of the putter. The back edges almost disappear into the turf. This is an interesting spin on the Spider design for sure.

BONUS COVERAGE: Spider Tour Series S (Coming in 2024)

The Spider Tour S is a larger version of the original Spider. The putter head is 3mm longer and 8mm wider in comparison. Spider Tour S is constructed at a heavier head weight and only offered at 35” and 38” lengths, with both featuring counterbalance grips for maximum stability.

Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of this one. Just imagine it looking like a larger Spider Tour.

How hot are counterbalanced mallets these days? Hot enough that TaylorMade is rolling out two new counterbalanced Spiders. The Spider Tour version will be a standard head with counterbalanced modifications. The Spider Tour S , on the other hand, is a whole new head. Or at least a new larger head.

The Spider Tour S looks like the Spider Tour but longer and wider. I wish they had brought back the Daddy Long Legs name. Such a perfect nom de plume for a big Spider. I think this head is large enough for the DDL Tour name to fit.

Anyway, you will need to wait until next spring for the Spider Tour S. It still needs a couple of additional molts before it is large enough to be released to the wild.

Final Thoughts on the 2023 TaylorMade Spider Tour Putter Line

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series line-up

I’m always curious to know what you think about the new putter lines. What is your initial impression of the TaylorMade Spider Tour Series ? Are you ordering immediately, waiting to roll at the end of October or offended TaylorMade would release new versions of their classics? Will the Spider V and Spider Z become classics like the others in the line?

My first impression is that these will be a hit with Spider players, likely more than the Spider GT lines. Those putters carried the Spider name but looked unfamiliar. These new putters once again capture the look of a TaylorMade Spider.

More importantly for me, and likely more importantly for sales, I was impressed at how much the new Spider Tour felt like my old Spider Tour. Customers and Tour players will gravitate to these new models because they look familiar and then put them in the bag because they feel familiar.

FAQ: 2023 TaylorMade Spider Tour Putters

The MSRP for the Spider Tour Series line putters is $349.99. They can be preordered today and will arrive in stores on Oct. 27.

I mentioned it but there is definitely a difference when the weights are moved. Compare the new models or find a Spider GT Max you can adjust. This is a technology that absolutely influences how the putter feels and performs for a golfer.

Nope. That Spider, the Spider Tour SS, was a Tour-only prototype for Scheffler. When you are top-ranked in the world, you get special putter treats. Is that insert-free Spider coming to market? I’ve no clue but I would like to see that plumber’s neck on a retail Spider.

Yes. I will run that interface through its paces to see what kind of wacky eye-hurting version of the Spider I can come up with.

I wonder if these new Spider putters will have the paint issues like the old Spiders? It’s a lot of money to be dropping on a putter and have the paint fall off. Anyone have these issues with these new ones?

The problem I would have, make that two, is you can’t scoop the ball up after you pull it left or right and, for $350, it better sink all my first or second putts.

Where is the one with the milled face? Is that one just for tour players?

So far. Tour players get the fancy stuff first.

Regarding tour S, will we be given the option of different inserts? A soft and a harder feeling version? I know that the spider tour has that 2 insert options for they customizing option

Which model would be for the player with a slight arc stroke type?

I would start with the slant neck Spider Tour. That one will likely gate the least since the weights are at the back. From there, fill the CG forward to find one that fits your arc.

Scottie Scheffler WITB: What's in the Masters 2024 champion's bag?

S cottie Scheffler is posting one of the most incredible streaks of recent times in professional golf. His stellar performances, including his victories, consequently raise the question about how his bag is equipped.

Although Scottie Scheffler is a TaylorMade player, his bag is quite eclectic. Scheffler won his second green jacket using clubs from three different brands.

Here's what was inside Scheffler's bag at the 2024 Masters:

  • Driver: TaylorMade Qi10 (8 degrees) with Fujikura Ventus Black 7 X shaft
  • 3-wood: TaylorMade Qi10 (15 degrees) with Fujikura Ventus Black 8 X shaft
  • Irons: Srixon ZU85 (3, 4), TaylorMade P7TW (5-PW) with Nippon N.S. Pro Modus 3 Hybrid Prototype 10 X (3), True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100
  • Wedges: Titleist Vokey Design SM8 (50-12F, 56-14F), Titleist Vokey Design WedgeWorks Proto (60-T) with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts.
  • Putter: TaylorMade Spider Tour X with Golf Pride Pro Only Cord grip
  • Ball: Titleist Pro V1

Scheffler made a radical change in his equipment in recent weeks, switching from a blade putter to a mallet putter. His putting performance had been his main problem but that has improved dramatically during the current season.

Scottie Scheffler's streak spans several months, even several seasons. From January 2022 to date, Scheffler has played more than 50 tournaments with only three missed cuts (all in 2022) and nine victories, including two Majors.

A closer look at Scottie Scheffler's streak

Scottie Scheffler's nine victories (including two Majors) in the last 28 months might seem enough to quantify the streak he's on. However, his good performances go far beyond that.

Between January 2022 and the 2024 Masters , Scheffler has finished in 34 Top 10s (well over half of the tournaments played). In addition to his nine wins, he has five second-place finishes and 10 other Top 5s.

Scheffler has yet to play a round over par during 2024 (35 rounds played). His last round over par on the PGA Tour was played on the third day of the TOUR Championship in August 2023. He scored a 3-over 70 that day.

Scheffler's performances in the Majors deserve special mention. The World No. 1 has played 16 Majors to date with two victories (both in the Masters), eight other Top 10s and only two missed cuts.
