America’s Best Long Weekend Getaways

Of course you want months off for vacation. Who doesn’t? But sometimes the best we can do is a restorative (or raucous) two-night weekend trip to somewhere fantastic. Here, the highlights from 13 of our favorite quick trips.

Asheville, North Carolina

For a low-key romantic weekend away, the art-centric mountain town of Asheville won’t do you wrong. Perhaps the crowning jewel of the trendy yet traditional city, the Biltmore Estate simply isn’t to be missed. The 250-room Gilded Age chateau sits on 8,000 acres of highly-curated gardens and meadow (all designed by the very guy behind NYC’s Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted) with the Blue Ridge Mountains serving as a super casual backdrop. Peeling yourself away from the largest mansion in the U.S., you’ll get your night’s sleep at The Windsor Boutique Hotel , a homey 14-suite rustic stay right in the heart of downtown. End your mini-retreat with brunch at Cúrate , a buzzy tapas-inspired restaurant with crowd pleasers like honey-drizzled fried eggplant and traditional tortilla española.

Seattle, Washington

Kimpton Hotels know how to turn on the quirk, and the historic Palladian is no exception. Guest rooms at the Belltown spot work screenprinted Mr. T and David Bowie pillows, vintage maps, and smart brass fixtures into an otherwise classic mix. Two blocks away, you’ll find the famous Pike Place Market , your go-to place for quick bites, while luxe sit-down meals are best at The Butcher’s Table , which delivers with a raw bar, inventive sides, and every cut of steak known to man. To walk it all off, head for exhibits at Chihuly Garden and Glass , an IG goldmine dripping in galleries of vibrant glass sculptures—the center of which is a suspended red, yellow, and amber floral piece that lives in the Glasshouse.

Miami Beach, Florida

Bed down at the ultra-quirky Freehand Miami for a stay packed with vintage travel ephemera, mod furniture (making use of a ROYGBIV palette), and a social courtyard with a pool, bocce, yoga, and art classes. Dinner is to be had at Byblos , a design-savvy, family-style Eastern Mediterranean joint that serves up duck kibbeh, Persian fried chicken, and fattouche, in an impossibly bright (and chic) dining room. Art is all around in the Magic City, and to see the best of it, you don’t need a ticket or a proper tour—simply take yourself on a self-guided walk around Ocean Drive’s Art Deco and Art Nouveau buildings, making sure to stop for photos at favorites like Hotel Breakwater South Beach , the Leslie Hotel , the Essex House Hotel , and The Tides South Beach .

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The boutique Palomar Philadelphia deftly spins an eccentric take on a classic American design scheme with neon presidential portraits, rainbow-hued busts, and plush velvet seating. Take an hour or so to hit Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens , a museum, outdoor art installation, and indoor gallery from mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar, which takes up half a block on the once-dilapidated (and now handsomely revitalized) South Street. Or swing by the Barnes Foundation  to see a stunning display of French impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. For some Philly history that isn’t the Liberty Bell, you can check out Eastern State Penitentiary —a massive, fortified prison that once held Al Capone—on an audio-guided tour narrated by the one and only Steve Buscemi. Afterwards, skip the over-hyped cheesesteaks at dueling shops Geno’s and Pat’s , and head instead for the Reading Terminal Market , where you can nom on pad thai, oyster sliders, and sweet dessert crepes all under one roof.

Austin, Texas

A weekend is all you need to see the very best of Texas’s coolest city. Kick it off with a locals-only brunch at Elizabeth St. Cafe , a chic French-Vietnamese boulangerie where coconut water and preserved tangerine margaritas are served in Chinese takeout containers. Newer spots on our radar include the Southern-inspired Colleens Kitchen, Pool Burger (we love the Blue Hawaiian, topped with grilled pineapple slices, bacon, crumbled blue cheese, and Thousand Island dressing), and Aviary Wine & Kitchen. For some retail therapy, head to South Congress for an afternoon at the boutiques; United Apparel Liquidators is the place for designer couture (Balenciaga, Rag & Bone, Givenchy, to name a few) at bargain basement discounts. Don’t leave the city without going for a dip at Barton Springs Pool , the aquifer-fed swimming hole of choice where a young Robert Redford learned how to swim.

Chicago, Illinois

You can’t go to Chi-town without stopping by the Art Institute of Chicago . We’d say the same about leafy Garfield Park Conservatory , built on nearly five acres in 1906 and often referred to as “landscape art under glass;” the Chicago architecture river cruise ; and, of course, Wrigley Field . (Yes, all of these are touristy, but so worth it.) You could spend an entire weekend eating your way through this city. Some of our favorite spots to hit up now include the Michelin-starred brewpub, Band of Bohemia; the wildly popular Korean-American restaurant, Parachute (book early!); and the British-inspired Owen and Engine , which serves one of the finest burgers in town. As for where to stay, we’re digging Hotel Zachary , with its stunning grand staircase and knockout views of Wrigley Field from almost every room.

Boulder, Colorado

Just north of Denver, an outdoorsy paradise where locals are tanned, toned, and likely just back from a trail run awaits. Catch up with the best of them on the one-mile First Flatiron trail , which winds through Boulder’s iconic sandstone slab rock formations. Break for afternoon tea in an intricately carved wooden teahouse at Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse originally made in Tajikistan—it’s a highbrow prelude to an afternoon tour of Avery Brewing , home to the hoppy India Pale Ale. After a couple of brews, head back to your hotel (there’s the funky, low-key Basecamp and more upscale St. Julien Hotel and Spa ) for a quick nap before dinner at the ever-popular northeastern Italian-inspired restaurant Frasca Food and Wine run by Chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson.

New Orleans, Louisiana

In the land of beignets, po’ boys and kicked-up cajun cuisine, a weekend in NOLA is all about EATING. Start the gluttony with the classic creole-inspired brunch (and 25 cent martinis!) at Commander’s Palace —the wild Louisiana white shrimp stuffed with spicy tasso ham, Crystal hot sauce, pickled okra, and pepper jelly is a must. And we can’t leave out classics like Cafe Du Monde’s famous deep-fried pastry, Bon Ton Cafe’s jambalaya, and Bevi Seafood Co.’s peacemaker po’ boy full of fried shrimp, swiss cheese, and roast beef gravy with a side of seafood gumbo. Newcomers worth checking out include Josephine Estelle , the Italian osteria at the Ace Hotel . Alternatively, skip all of that and go from breakfast to lunch to dinner at the Roch Market food hall. You’ll want to pack those fat pants.

Savannah, Georgia

Warning: A trip to Savannah is highly caloric. But if you don’t indulge, you’re not doing it right. The line runs down the block for Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room , for very good reason: the fried chicken, candied yams, and macaroni and cheese are so good, you’ll want to get in line all over again for dinner. Explore the city’s art scene at the various galleries around City Market on your own or sign up for a tour on the second Saturday of every month. History buffs can learn about Savannah’s past at the 1868 Mercer Williams House , the former home of Jim Williams and the site of the killing of Danny Hansford in May of 1981 (remember, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil?). It’s also worth checking out the iconic Bonaventure Cemetery , dripping in Spanish moss and rumored to be full of ghosts—you can shake off the heebie-jeebies with a jalapeño margarita at the 18th century Olde Pink House .

San Diego, California

Of course, you’ll want to hit the beach in San Diego. La Jolla Cove is our personal favorite, with verdant grass that leads to craggy cliffs, but there’s so much more to do in this SoCal city. Wander the 15 (!) museums at the 1,200-acre Balboa Park , hike to the lagoon at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve , and feast on some of the best Mexican food north of the border at Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop (we love the steak, shrimp, avocado and chipotle taco).

Portland, Oregon

Portland has a reputation for being the Brooklyn of the West—which isn’t entirely unfounded, given its profusion of microbrews and macro-beards. Your first stop: Ned Ludd , where almost everything on the menu (local rabbit and roasted radishes, or chocolate chip cookies in a cast iron pan, for example) is cooked on a wood fire. Hike through the rainforest to feel the spray of the 627-foot waterfall at Multnomah Falls , just half an hour from downtown Portland. Leave time for a trip to peruse the two million-some volume at Powell’s City of Books , a local favorite on Burnside St.

Palm Springs, California

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elizabeth Taylor — a who’s who of showbiz has long found solace in Palm Springs. Today this desert oasis is the perfect mix of modern and kitschy which attracts a hip L.A. crowd. Spend an afternoon wandering the Uptown Design District, where eye-catching boutiques (we love the Midcentury housewares at Christopher Anthony ) are joined by retro-chic restaurants and bars. Bootlegger Tiki , Palm Canyon Drive’s mixology-centered newcomer, has a 12–2 a.m. happy hour, kitschy luau-themed décor, and hangover-worthy cocktails (we love the cheekily-named Mango Unchained.) If live music is what you seek, check out Melvyn’s , the storied supper club-style hangout once frequented by Ol’ Blue Eyes himself.

Shelter Island, New York

The 12-square-mile atoll sits between the tony North Fork and the Hamptons but feels a hushed world away (more than a third of the area is fiercely protected by the Nature Conservancy). Here, it’s all about unwinding, from the golden-sand beaches and hiking paths to farm fresh produce and sunset cocktails. The island’s newest place to bed down is Chequit Inn , with 37 shabby-chic rooms, C.O. Bigelow toiletries, and complimentary breakfast. For dinner, don’t miss the Montauk pearl oysters and lobster pot pie at Vine Street Café (or pick up goodies to go at the food market out back).

Weekend cruises: How to find 2- and 3-night getaways

Erica Silverstein

Weekend trips let you get away without missing too much work or school — but what if your preferred escape is a cruise? I'm here to tell you that weekend cruises are a real thing and can be a wonderful way of getting your ship fix when you're short on time.

The days of the two-night cruise to nowhere are gone, but two- and three-night weekend cruises still exist from ports ranging from Miami to Los Angeles. Read on to learn who sails these short getaways, where you can go and how much that weekend jaunt to the Bahamas is going to cost you.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Best weekend cruise itineraries

2 night trips away

If you're looking to hop a ship for a few nights, you can't just sail from anywhere to anywhere. It's not like booking a hotel. Thanks to the complicated Passenger Vessel Services Act , foreign-flagged cruise ships cannot leave port, sail in circles with their casinos, shops and spas open, then return back to port two nights later. Nor can they hop from one U.S. city to another. Ships need to call in another country before heading back – which limits where you can sail on a weekend cruise.

The most popular weekend cruises sail from Miami, Port Canaveral or Palm Beach in Florida, to the Bahamas, with one or two stops in Nassau, Freeport or the cruise line's private island. Consider it a quick dash to the beach — ironic because you have to get to a warm-weather, coastal area to meet your ship in the first place.

On the Pacific Coast, weekend cruises from Los Angeles, San Diego or Long Beach in California (near Los Angeles) head to Ensenada, Mexico for a quick getaway. Farther north, you might find a short repositioning sailing between Seattle or San Francisco and Vancouver, British Columbia at the beginning or end of the Alaska cruise season .

Weekend cruises from New York or other East Coast ports like Boston or Baltimore don't really exist because two or three nights is not enough time to get to Canada, Bermuda or the Bahamas and back again.

Related: Caribbean vs. Bahamas cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

The other key thing to understand is a weekend cruise will typically require some time off work or missed school. That's because most cruise ships board in the afternoon and depart in the early evening then return to port in the morning. You can't punch out of work at 5 p.m. on Friday, hop aboard a ship and return Sunday night.

The most likely scenario is that you'll arrive at your ship Friday afternoon for a three-night cruise, which will deliver you back to port on Monday morning. Depending on your working hours, you might need to take a half day off on Friday and arrive late to work on Monday. If you've got a flexible schedule or Fridays off — no problem. A few lines offer Thursday or Saturday departures for three-night cruises, but they're rare and would require more missed school or work.

Two-nighters are rare in the weekend cruise world but do exist. The key line for cruisers short on time is Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line (come late April, it will transition into Margaritaville at Sea ).

This line sails exclusively two-night cruises back and forth between West Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. Depending on the week, you could depart on a Friday, spend Saturday on Grand Bahama Island and come home Sunday. Or, leave Saturday, beach it up Sunday and return Monday morning.

Cruise lines sailing 2- and 3-night weekend cruises

2 night trips away

You can count on Bahamas Paradise/Margaritaville at Sea for a quick weekend cruise fix, but that's a one-ship cruise line sailing an older, refurbished ship. From the major cruise lines, most of the big-ship lines offer a consistent schedule of three-night cruises. The higher-end, luxury lines rarely offer a sailing that short.

Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean all offer three-night Bahamas cruises from Florida to Nassau and/or the line's private island. Departure ports include Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale.

Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean also take care of West Coast folks with three-night sailings from southern California (Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Diego) to Ensenada, Mexico.

You can count on those lines to offer entire seasons of short sailings. A few other lines, such as Holland America or Princess Cruises , will offer the occasional repositioning sailing along the Pacific Coast between San Francisco or Seattle and Vancouver. Sometimes those short cruises will fall over a weekend, allowing you that quick getaway without missing work.

Weekend cruise cost

Cheap weekend cruises are not hard to find; three-night sailings are among the most affordable cruises you can buy, both because you're not on board all that long, and because cruise lines often put older ships without the latest wow-factor attractions on these routes.

I'm currently seeing three-night Bahamas cruises from $129 per person, based on two people sharing an inside (windowless) cabin . That breaks down to $43/night for transportation, food, accommodations and entertainment for one person ($86/night for a couple). You'll have a hard time finding a hotel for that price, let alone lodging plus multiple meals.

The cheapest balcony cabin I found was just shy of $200 total for one person (under $65 per night), though fares in the $200s and $300s were more common.

Prices will vary depending on the cruise line, ship, sail date and how far in advance you're booking. If you're flexible on timing, look for the best weekend cruise deals and plan your getaway for those dates.

Related: 6 ways to get a deal on a cruise

Three-night Mexico cruises at press time are starting at $149 per person ($50 per night), with balconies from $237 ($79 per night).

Note that Disney cruises to the Bahamas or Mexico are priced much higher than other cruise lines. Pricing for a three-night Disney Mexico cruise starts just shy of $1,000 per person for an inside cabin and a three-night Bahamas cruise from $625 per person. Still, it's cheaper than a weeklong Disney cruise.

Pros and cons of weekend cruises

2 night trips away

Weekend cruises only work if you live within easy driving distance of a departure port. That way, you can still work half a day on Friday and simply arrive back to work a little late on Monday (assuming you're a 9-to-5-er).

If you need to fly or drive many hours to your departure port, you're looking at more of a long weekend with a day or two of time off from work required. However, if you have a flexible schedule or work off hours, a weekend cruise is definitely doable.

Weekend cruises have many benefits, the obvious one being they do not require missing much school or work. They're more affordable than a longer cruise, so they can be great for folks on a budget. You can tack them onto a longer vacation in Florida or California to combine two trips into one.

These short trips are also a great way to rack up points toward elite status on your favorite cruise line, especially if you book a suite that earns you extra points.

Related: Short cruises are cheaper, but are they right for you?

The drawbacks are the lack of choice in destination and cruise line. You won't be able to try every restaurant or attraction on board your cruise ship because you simply won't have enough time.

If you party hard, get sunburned or wear yourself out with lots of active shore excursions, you might come home exhausted instead of well rested and not ready to return to the office on Monday.

Weekend cruises also have a reputation for being party cruises. The last time I sailed on a three-night cruise, I met lots of ladies on bachelorette party getaways, and the nightclub, bars and karaoke were hopping each evening — more so than on longer cruises. If you're looking for a more sedate atmosphere, a longer cruise might be more your speed.

Bottom line

Weekend cruises are a fun way to get your ship fix without taking a full vacation or breaking the bank. They make more sense if you live within an hour or two of your cruise ship's departure port, but it can still be worth taking a long weekend for a three-day cruise even if you have to build in some travel time.

However, if you love cruising so much that you might have a hard time leaving a ship after just a few nights, you might want to skip the weekend sailing and save up for a weeklong cruise instead.

Weekend trips from NYC

Bear Mountain, NY

1.  Bear Mountain, NY

1hr 15 mins from NYC

In the time it would take to make it across town during rush hour, adventurers can get to Bear Mountain for an easy escape from city madness.

Do this: The state park, situated in the mountains rising from the west bank of the Hudson River, which offers a bevy of hiking and biking trails, as well as picnic groves, lake and river fishing access, a swimming pool and a zoo.

Stay here: Bear Mountain Inn , originally built in 1915, hosted Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower back in the day, and has been extensively renovated to include 15 luxury guest rooms, plus a spa and a restaurant.

Asbury Park, NJ

2.  Asbury Park, NJ

1hr 30mins from NYC

The summertime gay community in this shore town has actually been active since the 1950s—and over the past few years, the scene’s really heated up.

Eat here: MOGO Korean Fusion Tacos, a favorite among both visitors and locals.

Stay here: Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel , which was originally designed by noted Beaux Arts architect Whitney Warren.

Beacon, NY

3.  Beacon, NY

Beacon is steeped in history (Beacon Mountain, the tallest point of the Hudson Highlands, played a significant role in the American Revolution), but besides its storied past, it’s also packed with modern-day culture. The city has an arty, indie spirit that attracts…arty, indie people.

Do this:  A former Nabisco box-printing facility on the banks of the Hudson, Dia:Beacon holds collections from the 1960s to the present. Exhibitions meld with works on long-term view from artists including Walter De Maria and Dan Flavin.

Stay here: Sitting at the base of Mount Beacon—a mile and a half from the town’s center—the Swann Inn of Beacon is a charming bed-and-breakfast. Situated in an 1866 Gothic house, it has five uniquely decorated rooms, which all have retro-cool vibes that would make Wes Anderson blush, including the Red Parlor Suite, a romantic respite complete with a friggin’ front porch).

New Hope, PA

4.  New Hope, PA

1hr 45mins from NYC

New Hope is Bucks County’s jewel, unhurried and unassuming, with indie boutiques, seasonal-focused eateries and forget-all-your-troubles B&Bs galore. Between hopping to different quaint spots, be sure to get back to nature. We suggest cruising on a rented bike down the Delaware Canal towpath.

Do this: With 134 acres featuring hundreds of species of native plants (including more than 80 that are rare or endangered) and stunning woodlands and meadows throughout, Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve offers guided walks in addition to talks and workshops (“Focus on Ferns,” anyone?).

Stay here: A AAA Four Diamond winner for eight consecutive years, The Inn at Bowman’s Hill is damn swoonworthy. Rooms, like Fountain View and Orchard Retreat, have heated tubs for two—if that’s your bag. For platonic pals, there’s the Penthouse Suite, with its private deck and panoramic views of the property.

New Paltz, NY

5.  New Paltz, NY

1hr 45 mins from NYC

Beyond all the worth-the-trip views of riverside bluffs and verdant trees, New Paltz is the most historic on this list, with preserved houses that were around 100 years before we even became the U.S. of A. So, yeah. Pretty old.

Do this: Learn about the lives of the 17th-century Huguenot settlers , as performers (dolled up in duds from the period) take you through 30 buildings over 10 acres, including seven historic homes and a reconstructed 1717 church. (Want to retain the back-to-basics spirit as you take in the National Historic Landmark District? Leave the selfie stick at home.)

Stay here: Mohonk Mountain House , set in the Shawangunk Ridge on Lake Mohonk, is sporting and sophisticated, a sort of East Coast version of The Shining grounds (without all the killing and stuff). Whether you choose one of the classic, wood-paneled rooms and suites or one of its private cottages two miles away, your nightly rate gets you access to a range of complimentary activities like boating and swimming, not to mention meals in its dining room.

Lake Placid, NY

6.  Lake Placid, NY

The beloved lake is just the beginning: This prime Adirondacks spot features art, shopping, hiking, swimming and one killer mountain.

Do this: If you're already planning to go out to admire all the greenery upstate New York has to offer, visiting The Wild Center is a must if you want to experience truly unreal nature views. That is, as long as you aren't afraid of heights. Why? Oh, because when you go, you'll be walking an elevated trail across the Adirondack treetops. No big deal!

Stay here:  The seven-acre, 131-unit Mirror Lake Inn can’t be beat. Every room looks over the lake, and the cozy fireside accommodations (along with two restaurants and a spa) will keep you in your robe late into the day. Or check in to the aesthetic and cozy Eastwind Lake Placid .

Hudson, NY

7.  Hudson, NY

2hrs 20mins from NYC

You’ve probably heard a lot about Hudson , and here’s why: food and antiques. The place does both extremely well—it’s a prime option for rustic fine dining (Ca’Mea) and rare retro finds (just about any storefront on Warren Street). But the other big reason why droves of New Yorkers and, fittingly, DIY businesses and developments are staking their claim on the town is because it’s all ensconced in a gorgeous Hudson River–side environment, dotted with quaint historic homes.

Eat here: The communal, high-end restaurant Wm. Farmer and Sons has a cozy-yet-urban energy, serving up bar snacks, small plates and big plates that make use, whenever possible, of local ingredients.

Stay here:  The Hudson Whaler beautifully blends old-timey flavor with contemporary amenities. Set in an Art Deco building, the hotel has 16 well-appointed guest rooms with sleek, sculptural furnishings that match the Deco tone, as well as free Wi–Fi, an iPad lending library, Keurig coffeemakers, pillow-top mattresses and Lather Aromatherapy bath products.

Phoenicia, NY

8.  Phoenicia, NY

2hrs 30mins from NYC

Tucked into the Catskills, this Ulster County hamlet is a real melting pot, the kind of place where you can expect to see a conservative old-timer and a Brooklyn lumbersexual sipping Buds along the bar in perfect harmony. For every no-nonsense staple (Phoenicia Diner), there’s a hipster newbie (the Graham & Co.). The mellow, no-frills, hippie-dippie local culture makes it easy for anyone to relax here.

Do this:  Explore downtown Phoenicia, go whitewater tubing on Esopus Creek, or explore Kaaterskill Falls. Phoenicia has plenty of adventures, from mild to wild.

Stay here: Located directly on Esopus Creek in the heart of the Catskills,  Phoenicia Black Bear Campground  is rustic without being primitive. Choose your own adventure: There’s swimming, biking, horseback riding and more nearby.

Shelter Island, L.I.

9.  Shelter Island, L.I.

2hrs 30 mins from NYC

A midsize island just a seven-minute ferry ride from Greenport, NY, and surrounded by Shelter Island Sound and Gardiner’s Bay, Shelter Island is all about unwinding, with historic plantations, unassuming cafés, kayaking and, of course, those views that will make your pals rageful that they didn’t join you.

Do this: With more than 2,000 acres of tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields and freshwater marshes, Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve is one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Edged in white by 12 miles of coastline, Mashomack attracts birders and botanists looking for ospreys and a number of rare plants—and regular people like us who just want our Facebook feed to look awesome.

Stay here: Every room at the perennially popular Sunset Beach Hotel has a private sundeck with water views (and loads of Kiehl’s products in the bathrooms, yay). Sunset Beach’s area, with its curving shoreline and spectacular light, is pretty darn similar to the French Riviera.

The Berkshires, MA

10.  The Berkshires, MA

3hrs from NYC

Think of the Berkshires as the Hamptons, minus the nightlife and plus all the art, theater, dance, music and small-town simplicity you could want. Yes, the mountainous region in western Massachusetts has luxury, but it’s served in a laid-back setting. And given its jaw-dropping bucolic backdrop, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities, either.

Do this: One of the country’s largest centers for contemporary art, MASS MoCA , which is set in a converted factory building, focuses on large-scale, immersive installations that more conventional museums just can’t handle. There’s just as much focus on performing arts as there is on visual here; each year touts more than 75 performances of music (Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival has been held here), dance, films, theater and more.   Another surefire bet for the performing arts is Shakespeare & Company in nearby Lenox. The thriving regional theater company mixes traditional Shakespearean productions with contemporary works across multiple, indoor and outdoor stages. And do we need to mention that weed is legal here? Try paying a visit to the closest cannabis dispensary to the New York state border: the chic and friendly Rebelle located in Great Barrington.

Stay here: Oriented toward health, wellness and pampering, Canyon Ranch , which is centered around the century-old, lovingly restored Bellefontaine Mansion, has a lot to offer: tennis, aerobics, guided hikes and bike rides, canoeing, croquet and more than 40 seminars and classes daily such as “Finding Forgiveness.” After all that fresh air and, er, learning, relax in the spa while enjoying the signature Canyon Stone Massage or the candlelit Euphoria body treatment.

Cape May, NJ

11.  Cape May, NJ

Rediscover your inner summertime kiddie at this seaside destination, which has some of the East Coast’s most unspoiled beaches. The unpretentious fun peaks on Fourth of July weekend—when a full-on carnival and an impressive fireworks display bring in throngs of people—but the good times continue throughout the season, with boardwalk vendors and even dolphin-spotting tours.

Do this: Yup, Jersey Shore Alpacas sounds like an MTV spin-off (and it’d be an awesome one). At this small alpaca farm in Green Creek, a quaint town right next to Cape May, mingle with the critters—well taken care of by owners Jim and Tish Carpinelli—during Open Farm Saturdays, when you can meet the cute creatures at the fence and feed them (carrots are provided).

Stay here: Cape Resorts . One of the area’s Victorian buildings, the 200-year-old Congress Hall is America’s oldest oceanfront resort. It has 104 rooms, as well as a restaurant, bar and lounge, outdoor pool, spa and a fitness center. But despite the full-service amenity list, the best things here are the simple ones, like the smell of salty sea air outside your open window. (Book an Atlantic-view room for the best relaxation results.)

Philadelphia, PA

12.  Philadelphia, PA

2hrs from NYC by car, 1hr and 23min by train

Aside from the wild football fans and patriotic Liberty Bell-seekers, the city of brotherly love caters to the artistic set through major attractions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Go to get cultured, but stick around for the amazing restaurants, beer gardens and the cheesesteaks ( duh ) that truly make the city a smash.

Do this: As the crown jewel of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the  Philadelphia Museum of Art should arguably be the first stop on your list. (Yes, even before the aforementioned cheesesteak). Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of 19th-and early-20th-century paintings and artifacts. After peeping the creative works, refuel at Reading Terminal Market . The famous indoor farmer’s market hawks everything from food and housewares to speciality snacks and treats all under one roof. Grab a takeaway treat from notable sellers like Famous 4th Street Cookie Company, Beiler’s Doughnuts and Little Thai Market. Once you’re full, head to Independence Beer Garden (an outdoor brew den) to down a few pints while playing games like giant jenga. What’s missing? Oh, right: End your night with a cheesesteak at any one of these spots.

Stay here:  Rest your head at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco . This is one of the city’s coolest hotels with post-modern meets art-deco inspired decor and a trendy rooftop bar. Added bonus: The hotel is located right next to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

The Hamptons, L.I.

13.  The Hamptons, L.I.

2.5 hrs from NYC

The Hamptons’ gorgeous sandy respites, dunes and relatively untouched landscapes aren’t just for the jet set. The area boasts gratis culture (the Dan Flavin Art Institute ) and no-nonsense places to eat ( Lobster Roll ) and drink (Fellingham’s), plus plenty of other casual nooks for the rest of us.

Do this: Coopers Beach  is the only stretch of silky, fine-grained white sand in Southampton that’s open to the public. So you can look like a baller in your sunset Instagram pic—without having to actually throw down a ton of dough.

Otherwise, you pay to park at Main Beach in East Hampton or park and walk to Montauk’s Kirk Park Beach.

Don’t miss a trip to the Montauk Lighthouse for some gorgeous views or a shopping spree in Sag Harbor.

Stay here: Privacy, luxury and amenities reign supreme at the Reform Club . The main building houses seven suites with wood-burning fireplaces (you’ll want to turn them on, even in the summer, just for the fun of it), oversize marble baths and white wainscot walls with original artwork.

Cooperstown, NY

14.  Cooperstown, NY

4hrs from NYC

Cooperstown has way more than baseball, and every true brew head knows this. With four breweries in town, Cooperstown was once the country's hops-growing capital.

Do this: Brewery Ommegang , is located on a 135-acre hops farm and offers daily tours.

Stay here: The Otesaga , the charming (and reportedly haunted) historic hotel, is celebrating its 106th anniversary. It offers fishing and boating—and serves Ommegang beer, to boot.

Newport, RI

15.  Newport, RI

4hrs 30mins from NYC

It’d be easy to dismiss the town as a tourist trap, but what often brings people back to Newport (other than yacht races, tours of a Vanderbilt mansion and smiley locals) are the newish spots.

Eat here: Revolving Door , where regional and national chefs hunker down for several weeks—sometimes up to a month—creating, cooking and serving an inspired prix-fixe menu.

Stay here: The Attwater , a design-driven seven-room boutique hotel off of historic Bellevue Avenue, recently acquired a Victorian manor next door and renovated it from top to bottom.

50 Best Romantic Getaways for a Couples Trip

Whether you're celebrating your honeymoon or just looking to escape with your partner, these are the 50 most romantic getaways around the world.

Alessandra Amodio/Travel+Leisure

What's your idea of a perfect romantic getaway? For some couples, it's all about relaxing on a beach somewhere tropical and sunny, while others prefer a new adventure in an exciting, fast-paced destination. Whatever your travel style, we've got you covered with our list of romantic destinations in the United States and around the world.

From ski resorts in Colorado to the wildlife-rich Galápagos Islands to the rolling hills of Tuscany, these are 50 of the most romantic getaways around the world.

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Wander through the green rolling hills and sheep pastures, and take in the history in this beautiful country. Try taking a hike up to Arthur's Seat for sweeping views, check out Edinburgh's Old Town for quaint architecture and fun museums (such as the Writers' Museum), and wander down the Royal Mile to take in street performers. Be sure to stop at a whiskey distillery for a sip or two — try Highland Park or Old Pulteney — and consider staying at Gleneagles Hotel, which sits on a 850-acre estate and has its own train station.

British Virgin Islands

Have a relaxing, sunny beach vacation in the beautiful British Virgin Islands. Play in the water and lounge on the sand at some of the most beautiful beaches — visit Cane Garden Bay Beach or Smuggler's Cove Beach for fewer crowds and more privacy. Also try swimming and snorkeling in Spring Bay, sailing to Anegada Island. Check out Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, which sits on its own 230-acre private island at the east end of Tortola. It has 52 guest accommodations, plus two-, three-, four- and six-bedroom villas, a spa, restaurants, two private beaches, and a 55-slip marina.

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

This resort city on the Pacific coast of Acapulco has picturesque beaches — visit Playa La Ropa or Playa Blanca for great snorkeling. It also has a quaint town with windy roads lined with galleries and restaurants to explore — be sure to check out La Cucaracha Gallery, Suazo Art Gallery, or Artemayren Studio y Galería for local art and Rufos Grill, Restaurante Las Adelitas, or Restaurantes Mexicanos Any for local food. For the ultimate romantic trip, you can stay in La Casa Que Canta, which was featured in the movie "When a Man Loves a Woman." The grounds have terracotta villas sculpted into the hillside with secluded suites.

Palm Springs, California

For a trip that feels like you are really getting away without actually having to go too far, check out Palm Springs for its hiking, gondola rides, golf, and warm desert air. Take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway — the world's largest rotating tram car — to travel 2.5 miles up to the top of Chino Canyon, where you can wander around and explore. Relax together at Estrella Spa or Azure Spa Palm Springs, where you can get desert-inspired treatments.

Whidbey Island, Washington

This island in the Pacific Northwest is a quick trip from Seattle, and it offers stunningly beautiful views for the minimal effort involved in getting there. There are quaint hotels with modern amenities, such as the Inn at Langley, with hot tubs and views of the Saratoga Passage waterway. You can explore the shops in town or hike along the coastal bluffs, maybe catching a sight of gray whales if the season is right.

Idyllwild, California

This rustic mountain town is perfect for exploring with someone you love, or for a first trip together as a couple. Stay in a small wooded cabin and then spend your time exploring the shops in town, stocking up on homemade jams or leather hats. Try hiking the Ernie Maxwell trail for beautiful views, and if you are in town on a Saturday, head to the town square to meet the mayor (he's a golden retriever named Max). For dinner, sit on the patio in the mountain air at Gastrognome or Idyology.

Explore the wide-open plains and enjoy the breathtaking night skies in Montana. While on your trip, stay at a guest ranch where you can experience outdoor activities, such as Flathead Lake Lodge, a family-owned and operated guest ranch. Or stay at Snow Bear Chalets, which are ski-in/ski-out treehouses located slopeside at Whitefish Mountain Resort in Whitefish, Montana.

La Paz, Mexico

La Paz is a romantic and often-overlooked destination located on the Sea of Cortez, which is known as the world's richest body of water. French explorer Jacques Cousteau famously named it the "aquarium of the world." Today, you can try diving, kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, surfing, and island hopping there. For romantic outdoor dining, try Las Tres Virgenes, Sorstis Restaurante, or Nim, or the more casual Il Rustico.

Experience the Reno side of the Lake Tahoe area for outdoorsy activities and intimate restaurants and hotels. Check out the Spa at Silver Legacy or the multitude of hot springs in the area for a relaxing day of romance. There's also the Riverwalk and Midtown District to explore. Opt to stay in the Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge , which sits lakeside with its own private beach, or the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe , where the concierge service can arrange a day of adventure on the mountain, a round of golf, or sailing on Lake Tahoe.

Dana Point, California

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

This lesser-known beach town is perfect for couples, and it gets you away from the more crowded California beach spots. Do some people-watching or swimming at Salt Creek Beach or Doheny State Beach, or try walking along Bluff Top Trail. For seafood with a view, try dining at Chart House or Wind & Sea. If you are looking for a place to say, the town's resorts have ocean views and spa treatments. Consider whale watching or taking a cruise on the Dana Wharf Sunset Wine Cruise during your visit, too.

Sonoma Valley, California

What better way to celebrate an anniversary, honeymoon, or other special romantic occasion than with wine in this scenic part of California. There are more than 400 wineries to visit in this region. For wineries with beautiful views, check out Bella Vineyards and Wine Caves or Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery in Dry Creek Valley. Then dine at some of the country's most romantic restaurants, including LaSalette, Valette, or The Girl & The Fig. Take a wine tour through the valley, take a walk through some of the state's earliest vineyards, or bike along scenic roads with the person you love for an unforgettable trip.

Chassignolles, France

This village in the Livradois-Forez, France's largest national park, is secluded and rural — perfect for couples looking to get away from it all. You can check out the local farms and wander among the country lanes. Auberge de Chassignolles is the only accommodation in town, with nine rooms situated next to the village's 12th-century church.

St. James, Barbados

With platinum white beaches, rugged cliffs, and breathtaking sunsets, Barbados is a perfect spot for a romantic getaway. Be sure to check out the Mount Gay Rum Distillery, and go swimming or snorkeling at Carlisle Bay or Brandon's Beach. While you are there, why not stay at The House, which is often voted one of the most romantic hotels in the Caribbean. Each of the 34 suites has ocean views, and the adults-only property has gardens, champagne breakfasts, and 24/7 service ambassadors.

Willemstad, Curaçao

Culture-loving couples will want to visit Willemstad, a vibrant and bustling city in the heart of Curaçao. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the capital of Curaçao and is famous for its colonial architecture and museums. Be sure to walk across the swinging Queen Emma Bridge, visit Serena's Art Factory to pick up ChiChi dolls, and shop along the old cobblestone streets.

Bend, Oregon

This city on the Deschutes River in Oregon has tons of hiking trails, water activities, and mountain views. While in town, try staying at Brasada Ranch, which has activities including horseback riding, skiing on Mt. Bachelor, and trips downtown to the local breweries. Dine at Ariana Restaurant, a restaurant built into a cozy bungalow, or The Blacksmith Restaurant, which was built into a former smithy.

Aspen, Colorado

Whether it's skiing down the slopes to a cozy mountainside lunch or hiking through fields of lupine and columbine to a high mountain lake for a picnic, there's something for everyone in Aspen. For a romantic stay, opt for a room at The Little Nell.

Chiloe, Chile

Visiting the little-known island of Chiloe is like taking a step back in time. The archipelago is made up of traditional small farms, fishermen, and craftsmen. For accommodations, try Tierra Chiloe (located on the Pullao Bay on the inland sea), which offers a number of interesting activities, including horseback riding, clam digging on the beach, sea kayaking from island to island, and hiking.

Door County, Wisconsin

Wisconsin might not sound like the most romantic place in the world, but this area has lots of secluded spots and fun activities that make it perfect for a couples trip. Check out Blacksmith Inn on the Shore, a bed and breakfast where all guest rooms have a fireplace, in-room whirlpool, and private balcony with views of Bailey's Harbor. You can use bikes, kayaks, sleds, and snowshoes to explore the area, including the nearby Sanctuary State Natural Area, which has 1,600 acres of boreal forest.

The Oregon Coast

The majestic Oregon beaches make for stunning scenery, and the quaint beach towns have tons of activities for couples to have fun together. Visit Cannon Beach for the iconic rock formations, check out the Tillamook Cheese Factory for a tour and free samples, and for accommodations, stay at Salishan Resort, which has 158 acres of forested land and beautiful views from all guest rooms.

The amazing jungles on this island will give you plenty to explore as a couple. You can sign up for a group trip or take tours on your own, and then relax at Playa Cativo Lodge in the heart of Costa Rica's rainforest. Eight of the eco lodge's rooms have a private outdoor terrace and plunge pool, and guests can also enjoy a fresh-water outdoor swimming pool and complimentary snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and self-guided nature hikes.

Bequia, St. Vincent

Having your own private island is the epitome of a romantic getaway, and this tropical destination gets you very close. At just seven square miles, with about 5,000 residents, there are no traffic lights, no neon signs, no chain hotels or restaurants, no golf courses, and no gated communities. In order to get there, travelers must take a flight to Barbados (or St. Lucia), and then take an inter-island hopper flight from there. Once on the island, you can stay at Bequia Beach Hotel, a tucked-away, family-owned luxury resort.

Santorini, Greece

Monica Farber/Travel + Leisure

This magical island is known as the most romantic in Greece, with turquoise waters, whitewashed houses sitting on cliffs, and beautiful beaches. Maui is the perfect destination for couples in search of a beach vacation filled with unique activities. Check out snorkeling at Black Rock on Kaanapali Beach, view hidden parts of the island on a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, and tour local farms on the slopes of Haleakala like Ocean Organic Vodka , Surfing Goat Dairy , and the Alii Lavender Farm .

Explore the rugged coasts and quaint towns in Maine, a perfect place to visit for a summer trip. Hike through Acadia National Park for beautiful views, visit the Portland Head Light, or visit the Allagash Brewery for a tour and some samples. Stay at The Waldo Emerson Inn in Kennebunkport, one the most historic places to stay on the Southern Maine coast. Once a shipbuilder's manse, the original house was built in 1753 by Waldo Emerson, Ralph Waldo Emerson's great-uncle.

New Mexico is perfect for couples looking for natural beauty and cute towns. Check out Chaco Canyon, or wander the historic streets of Santa Fe, stopping to dine at Geronimo, a restaurant built into an old-fashioned adobe home. Also try Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa, which has mineral hot springs and a mountain backdrop.

Fredericksburg, Texas

You may not think of Texas as a particularly romantic place, but you will after visiting this small town. Explore its more than 50 wineries and local chocolatiers, and book lodging at Gastehaus Schmidt's guesthouses, which have sweeping views and southern hospitality. Then book a wine tour and have a sunset picnic at the top of Enchanted Rock.

The Galápagos Islands

Visit the Galápagos Islands for a more adventurous take on a couples getaway. The main attraction here is the wildlife, so pack a pair of binoculars and prepare to explore a nearly undisturbed corner of the world, packed with birds, turtles, sea lions, and more.

San Francisco, California

Makito Umekita/Travel + Leisure

Getaway Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

Considering the benefits and the drawbacks are critical in weighing each place.

That way, you can pick the places that suit your preferences perfectly.

My family and I enjoyed the Grand Resort because of its luxurious ambiance.

Modern amenities—from the bed to the shower—made us feel very much at home.

However, the staff needs upskilling to better attend to the needs of every guest.

We also loved the Inn at Honey Run because of its rustic design and romantic atmosphere.

But some of its amenities need an upgrade to maximize the comfort given to visitors.

If you want waterfront views, the Sawmill Creek Resort will be your favorite spot in Ohio.

It’s perfect for us because we love having tee time every time we go on vacation.

Are you planning to visit the Salt Fork State Park during your weekend getaway?

If so, the Salt Fork Lodge must be your top choice to maximize your relaxation.

But past visitors shared that you must bring all the essentials since it takes time to reach the city center.

How I Picked The Destinations

My family and I have frequently visited Ohio for our weekend getaways.

I have also browsed online resources to see what people can enjoy in each hotel and attraction.

As a bonus, I talked to locals and experts to get additional ideas about the places I have yet to visit.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

best weekend getaways in ohio travel photo

Searching for the best weekend getaways in Ohio will expose you to many options.

Across its towns and cities, Ohio hosts various accommodation types where you can rest after the tour.

It was a delightful experience staying at the Inn at Honey Run because of the hospitable staff.

We looked forward to waking up early because of the hillside views we witnessed each morning.

Sawmill Creek was also one of our favorites due to the numerous activities you can do around the area.

If you decide to stay here, I suggest coming when the sun’s up to see the best of the Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve.

Of course, the Salt Fork Lodge caters best to those who want lakeside views more than anything else.

It also boasts family-friendly amenities like an outdoor pool, a game room, and a dining area that complete any trip.

However, the Grand Resort differs because of its outstanding service and quality.

No one from our group ever went hungry because of the nine restaurants available right inside.

At the same time, our quick weekend trip became more remarkable, thanks to the soothing massage at the spa that we intend to return for.

Such was undoubtedly one of the best experiences that my family had in our past adventures.

Chelsea 3 Newcastle 2: Southgate sees Palmer shine, away defensive woes, Gordon injury

LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 11: Cole Palmer of Chelsea celebrates scoring his team's second goal during the Premier League match between Chelsea FC and Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on March 11, 2024 in London, England. (Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty Images)

Chelsea beat Newcastle United 3-2 on Monday night courtesy of goals from Nicolas Jackson , Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk .

Jackson put the hosts into the lead early on, flicking the ball into the back of the net after an attempt by Palmer. Alexander Isak equalised shortly before half-time, curling the ball into the bottom corner of the Chelsea net.

Chelsea looked rocked but recovered as the second half went on. Palmer put the hosts ahead again after a spell of concerted pressure, striking from range past Martin Dubravka . Chelsea then sealed the win after Mudryk burst through the middle and then finished after rounding the goalkeeper.

Jacob Murphy struck a venomous shot into the back of the Chelsea net shortly before full time, but it was not enough to give Newcastle a point.

Here, Simon Johnson, George Caulkin and Chris Waugh analyse Monday night’s game.

2 night trips away

Did Palmer make the right impression on Southgate?

From the moment Palmer arrived at Chelsea, he has demonstrated a good sense of timing.

With England manager Gareth Southgate watching from the stands, Palmer put in yet another fine individual performance for Chelsea.

Southgate will name his England squad for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium on Thursday and Palmer will surely be in it.

Palmer, who joined from Manchester City last summer, perhaps did not intend to get an assist when his scuffed shot was flicked in by Jackson — but he still had to be in the right place to cause a threat from a poor Newcastle clearance.

He was usually the instigator behind Chelsea’s best moves and it was his magnificent strike that restored Chelsea’s lead just before the hour mark.

Not everything he tried came off, yet what Southgate might appreciate is that he always tries something out of the ordinary. That is what you want to call upon at the highest level.

When he came off, Thiago Silva , 39, gave him a seal of approval by patting the 21-year-old on the back. That speaks volumes.

Is defending away from home becoming a problem for Newcastle?

The statistics do not lie and they tell an unhappy story of fragility and frailty. Away from home in Premier League football, Newcastle have the joint-worst record with Sheffield United in terms of goals conceded, a shocking record for a team known last season for its solidity.

Sheffield United are bottom of the table and 10 points away from a position of safety, but both they and Newcastle have let in 32 away goals. Eddie Howe’s side have lost seven of their last nine league fixtures outside Tyneside and have gone 11 away league games without posting a clean sheet.

Effectively, this means they are making life impossible for themselves, certainly if they have any designs on returning to European football, something which looks increasingly beyond them. Where has their rigour gone?

From the start, Newcastle were flimsy and familiar. For Chelsea’s first goal, Malo Gusto ghosted around Dan Burn and then an awful Sven Botman clearance fell to Palmer, whose shot was flicked on by Jackson. Their second came from a sliced clearance, with Palmer given space by Botman to shoot. The third came as Newcastle’s defence pushed high.

Worse than simply losing games, they are undermining themselves.

George Caulkin

Why didn’t Chelsea press on after early goal?

If anyone needs to understand the lack of confidence Chelsea players have these days, you just had to see how they played after taking an early lead against Newcastle.

Normally when the home team gets off to the perfect start by scoring in the sixth minute, it has a positive impact on the self-belief. You would certainly expect the team that takes the lead to try to push for a second while their opponents are a little rattled.

Instead, Chelsea settled for dropping back and playing on the counter-attack, increasingly handing the initiative to their opponents.

Embarrassingly, goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic began wasting time by delaying his goal kicks long before the interval. It sent a message to the Newcastle players that Chelsea were already thinking about hanging on to what they have got and they pressed even higher up the pitch.

So it was no surprise when the equaliser came before half-time, with Chelsea wasting several opportunities to clear the ball properly, partly because play was so condensed in their own half. Newcastle players were there en masse to take advantage of every stray pass.

2 night trips away

It looked like they may not have learnt their lesson in the second half. Petrovic earned a yellow card for time wasting 13 minutes after Chelsea retook the lead, Pochettino’s men retreating again. Fortunately, substitute Mudryk eased the nerves by scoring a sublime individual goal to open up a crucial two-goal advantage — something they needed after Murphy’s strike.

However, you suspect opponents will keep looking to expose this fragility each time Chelsea don’t look to kill them off.

Is Newcastle’s season at risk of being over?

If the last gameweek breathed belated life back into Newcastle’s campaign — a shootout victory at Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup allowed fans to continue dreaming of elusive silverware and a comfortable triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers boosted their European qualification hunt — then this one risks sapping that away again.

This defeat leaves Newcastle 10th in the Premier League, seven points behind sixth-placed Manchester United and three shy of West Ham United in seventh, and their inconsistency suggests Howe’s side have very much become a mid-table team this season.

Even the most optimistic of Newcastle fans are holding little hope before a trip to the Etihad for the FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday. If Newcastle’s final hopes of silverware are ended, this campaign could be in danger of fizzling out.

Howe will not see it that way and he is desperate to return to European competition next season, but Newcastle looked an average side at Stamford Bridge, one who deserve to be mid-table, rather than in the top-four hunt.

Chris Waugh

Will Gordon’s injury impact his England hopes?

Anthony Gordon endured a miserable and truncated night at Stamford Bridge, coming off in the 36th minute after damaging his left knee, hardly the impression the winger would have wanted to make in front of Southgate.

Gordon has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers this season, scoring 10 goals and providing five assists in all competitions for the club, but he looked off the pace from the start, with Howe berating him at one stage for failing to offer support to Dan Burn on the left. That led to a minor tweak of tactics, with Gordon and Miguel Almiron switching flanks.

Gordon went down after a challenge from Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and after some treatment swiftly signalled he could not continue. He was replaced by Jacob Murphy. Injuries continue to be a depressing theme for Newcastle, with Harvey Barnes missing out against Chelsea with what was described as a slight muscular problem, believed to be a hamstring strain, and Burn having to be withdrawn after landing heavily.

On Sky Sports before kick-off, Ian Wright had backed Gordon to make a late run into Southgate’s European Championship squad, saying that with “the season he is having, you could have that pace off the bench”. That now feels unlikely; time is running out.

Morehead State men’s basketball is one game away from another trip to the NCAA Tournament

Morehead State men’s basketball is just one game away from another trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Eagles are a perfect 2-for-2 so far in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament: Morehead State defeated SIU Edwardsville 78-63 on Thursday night in the quarterfinals before going on to defeat UT Martin 84-78 in the semifinals on Friday night.

Fifth-year guard and OVC Player of the Year Riley Minix led the way for Morehead State with 26 points in Friday night’s win over the Skyhawks. Graduate student guard Kalil Thomas also had a strong scoring night, going a scintillating 7-for-10 on 3-pointers as part of a 23-point effort. Thomas, who had a season-high scoring total), also had a double-double with 10 rebounds.

By making seven 3-pointers, Thomas set a new Morehead State single-season record for made 3s. As a team, the Eagles made a season-best 16 3-pointers in the win.

Morehead State, the No. 3 seed in the OVC Tournament, will face No. 1 seed Little Rock in Saturday night’s championship game at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.

This is the third time in the last four years that Morehead State will play in the OVC Tournament title game.

“You want to be playing your best basketball at the end of the year. I think the way you do that is you just focus on getting better, each and every game,” Morehead State head coach Preston Spradlin told the Herald-Leader last month about what it takes to make a run through the OVC Tournament.

Morehead State has made the NCAA Tournament eight times in program history. The Eagles were most recently a part of March Madness in 2021, losing as a No. 14 seed in the first round to West Virginia.

By being on the doorstep of another appearance in the NCAA Tournament, Morehead State is extending a generational run of success for the program. The Eagles have won at least 20 games in each of the last four seasons. No NCAA Division I men’s basketball program in Kentucky has won as many games as Morehead State has (93) since the start of the 2020-21 season.

The Eagles are now 25-8 overall this season, with a 16-4 record (including this week’s OVC Tournament) against conference opponents. The 25 wins are tied for the most in one season by a Morehead State squad, along with the 1983-84 and 2010-11 teams.

Both of those past Morehead State teams won the OVC Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Morehead State and Little Rock played only once during conference play this season: The Trojans defeated the Eagles, 69-68, on Feb. 15 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Little Rock enters Saturday’s championship showdown on a 10-game winning streak.

Morehead State won a share of the OVC’s regular-season championship this season after winning the league’s regular-season title outright last year.

Both of these league titles have come under the direction of Spradlin, who is now in his eighth year as Morehead State’s head coach. Spradlin was previously a graduate assistant and the assistant director of basketball operations at Kentucky.

Spradlin is paid $260,000 annually, and his current contract runs through June 2027.

According to Spradlin’s contract — which was obtained Tuesday by the Herald-Leader via the Kentucky Open Records Act — several monetary bonuses for Spradlin were triggered by the Eagles’ strong play this season.

Because Morehead State’s conference regular-season winning percentage was above 70%, Spradlin will earn an extra $2,500.

Because Morehead State won the OVC regular-season championship, Spradlin will earn an extra $5,000.

And according to the contract, Spradlin would earn a $30,000 bonus for competing in the NCAA Tournament.

According to BracketMatrix , Morehead State projects as a No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament if the Eagles are able to knock off the Trojans on Saturday night.

Riley Minix, Drew Thelwell lead the way for Morehead State

Morehead State’s sustained success this season is all the more remarkable given the slew of injury issues the Eagles have dealt with.

Fifth-year guard Mark Freeman — the preseason OVC Player of the Year — is set to miss the entire season due to a wrist injury, and Morehead State has had to frequently shift its starting lineup due to player injuries.

But two near constants for the Eagles have been Riley Minix and Drew Thelwell .

Minix, the OVC Player of the Year, is averaging a double-double this season. He’s had a points-rebounds double-double in 10 of the last 11 games and has scored at least 20 points in 11 of Morehead State’s last 12 games.

Minix, a fifth-year player, was formerly a standout at Southeastern University in Florida, where he scored more than 2,000 points, secured more than 1,000 rebounds and was named an NAIA All-American.

Thelwell, a senior guard, is the all-time wins leader in Morehead State history. His arrival in Morehead as part of the Eagles’ 2020 recruiting class coincided with this current run of on-court success.

Thelwell is averaging more than six assists per game, and he ranks in the top 10 in the nation in both total assists and assists per game.

During Friday’s win over UT Martin, Thelwell set a new single-season Morehead State record for assists.
