Croatia: Islands & Mountains

Our guide, Mario, was so personable. He was knowledgeable, funny and extremely thoughtful. The places that we visited and hiked were very good. The weather was a bit of a challenge but that was out of everyone’s control. We are so happy that we were able to experience this region and the people. I would highly recommend Mario and Exodus for anyone wanting to experience hiking as well as seeing the culture of Croatia.

Self guided hiking tour: Split to Dubrovnik

This tour was fantastic! We wanted to explore some highlights of Croatia but get off the beaten path, with the freedom to travel as we pleased but with support where we needed it. Split is absolutely stunning - the perfect city to walk through, and with incredible history & stories all around. And then, Hvar! You'd be hard-pressed to find such unique hiking experiences without working with a company like this to organize it. Hvar Town itself is definitely a tourist hub, but for good reason; it's definitely worth experiencing, even if only for a night. Jelsa, though, was definitely a highlight. Apart from the hiking, roaming the side streets of the town itself is worth the visit...it's so romantic and feels untouched by tourism. I wasn't familiar with Brac before coming across this itinerary & I'm glad AndAdventure introduced me to it...we challenged ourselves with this hike and the rewards were so worth it. We fell in love with Croatia overall, and it was made so much easier since we had our hotels & luggage taken care of so we didn't have to worry about logistics along the way. Having on-the-ground support looking out for us along the journey gave us great peace of mind too. We picked a great trip, and having people in Croatia direct us to highlights we wouldn't have found anywhere else even after hours of research made the entire process all the more worthwhile. We definitely recommend this tour - we're thinking about another one with AndAdventure for 2021 or 2022!

Reviews of hiking & trekking tours in croatia.

Absolutely amazing! Our guide, Ivan, was fantastic! Based on this tour, I would recommend Tourradar to my friends. Thanks for a great adventure.
Very good customer service. Our tour contact was very attentive and checked in with us every day. It was very hot and humid and we would have preferred to hike earlier in the morning or later in the day but the schedule usually didn't allow for that. As a result we took shorter hikes/walks. It might be good to go to fewer islands and stay two nights on each to allow time for a hike and time to explore the towns and the beaches. Croatia is a beautiful country and we wanted to explore it to the fullest.

What to Expect Hiking in Croatia

The top 8 hikes in croatia, where to stay in croatia, what to bring on your hike in croatia, croatia trail safety, faqs on hiking in croatia, final thoughts.

So you’re backpacking through Croatia ? Okay then. To stop you from drying up Split and blocking the main roads, here are the top hikes in Croatia!

Hiking in Croatia can only be summed up by one word: Beautiful. Since Croatia has access to a long stretch of the Adriatic, it has an extraordinary ‘azure’ coastline. The Dinaric Alps loom in the north and are host to sunrises and sunsets so pretty they could make a geography student cry…

Hiking in Croatia

Croatia hosts a lot of blue, a lot of big, cool rocks, and some of the most Scandinavian-esque forests you can find in a warm(ish) country. On longer hikes, mountain huts and refuges can be found to take shelter within. Finding a place to stay close to your chosen hike is pretty straightforward too!

Because of the crowds it attracts, some of the hikes can get busy at times. As a general rule, I’d recommend hitting the trail as soon as the parks open, so you can avoid facing the hordes of tourists in peak season. And remember to stay safe out there too!

Okay, without further procrastination, I present to you the most legendary hiking trails in Croatia , meticulously designed to boost your holiday into action…

1. Plitvice Lakes National Park Loop (route K) – The Best Day Hike in Croatia

Plitvice Lakes National Park Loop The Best Day Hike in Croatia

The Plitvice Lakes route K is a strong all-day trail. It’s a flat and relatively easy hike , with a few steep and slippery parts on the way. You do need to grab a boat between the lower and upper lakes, but this doesn’t detract from the sense of achievement on completion!

Depending on how much time you’ve got, and how hard you wanna go, you can also opt for one of the other Plitvice routes . Route A, for example, is only a few hours and can be done in the morning. The entire trail is contained with the Plitvice nature park.

  • Duration: 18.3 km (11.4 miles), 6-8 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Type : Loop

Croatia is known for its incredible national parks . Plitvice Lakes was the first designated national park in the country, back in 1949. It’s now a UNESCO-recognised treasure trove of natural beauty .

Situated halfway between Zadar and the capital city of Zagreb, this park is full of stunning waterfalls and woodlands, and is most noted for its 16 interconnected lakes. Wildlife thrives here — deer, bears, you name it.

Because of its popularity, the best way to see the park without the crowds is to hit the trail first thing in the morning — let’s say 7-8 a.m. There are a few hotels close to Entrance 2, and a campground seven kilometres away that you can use as a base.

2. Milna Coastal Walk from Hvar – Best Coastal Hiking Trail in Croatia

Milna Coastal Walk from Hvar Best Coastal Hike in Croatia

Hvar Island is a famous coastal getaway not too far from Split — a quick ferry ride will put you there in under two hours. The Adriatic beauty speaks for itself here with its rugged coasts, hidden beaches, and gleaming seas.

The Milna Coastal Walk starts at the harbour in Hvar Town, following a paved coastal walkway along Mustado Bay. The coastal section should take you around half an hour, and there’s an eatery where you can stop for refreshments. A beach as well, if you’re in for a quick dip.

  • Duration: 7 km (4.4 miles), 2 hours
  • Type : One way (can be turned into a return)

From here, the path becomes much more rugged, weaving partly into the woodland with the sea on your right. After around 20 minutes or so, you’ll find a bay and a great swimming opportunity before you reach Robinson — a hidden gem of a beach with a charming bar/restaurant. Milna won’t be far from here.

To get back to Hvar, walk back the same way you came if you have time. Otherwise, hop on a bus or boat that’ll take you home!

While you could make this a day trip from Split, there are plenty of great places to stay in Hvar , from self-catering apartments to party hostels. The blue cave is something you should check out too- one of the highlights near Hvar!

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

3. Velebit Hiking Trail – The Best Multi-Day Hiking trail in Croatia

Velebit Hiking Trail The Best Multi Day Hike in Croatia

If you’re looking for a good multi-day hike in Croatia, look no further than this. The Velebit Hiking Trail is bound to take you on an epic expedition into the fantasy landscape of Croatia’s largest (not tallest) mountain. Located in the midst of the Northern Velebit National park, this hike is an epic.

The entire trail is about 100 kilometres in length, which can easily be split up into nine days for a more achievable and rewarding hike. Mountain huts dot the route, and provide the perfect authentic feel to your hike!

  • Duration: 100 km (62.2 miles), 9 days
  • Difficulty: Difficult
  • Type : One way

Carrying proper food supplies, clothing and equipment is especially important when you’re on a longer hike. And unlike other day hikes in Croatia, this multi-day trek is a serious task that needs careful preparation.

Most of these huts provide food, drinks, and shelter, but not all of them are open year-round and they have limited space. Be sure to contact them in advance to find out!

57 of the 100 kilometers in this route are made up of the entire Premuži? Trail. Built in the 1930s to connect North and South Velebit, it’s one of the most beautiful parts of the whole trek.

The best time to head out into the hills is during the summer when the weather is most stable.

4. Vidova Gora Trail – Must-Visit Hiking Trail in Croatia

Vidova Gora Trail Must Visit Hike in Croatia

Don’t let the start of this hike fool you. It may begin close to a holiday resort on Brac Island, but trust us; it is not easy. As usual, preparation is key.

The Vidova Gora Trail is well-marked and starts out along a gravelly road. But it won’t be long before you’re on a rocky mountain path, with wildflowers and local sheep for company.

You’ll climb around 900 meters in total, along a switchback trail that winds through scrublands dotted with olive trees. You’ll make your way until you reach a ridge where you’ll enjoy the Zlatni Rat Beach views and the sparkling bay below. Very Croatian of you!

  • Duration: 10.5 km (6.6 miles), 3-4 hours
  • Difficulty: Average
  • Type : Return

The summit of Vidova Gora is spectacular. It’s the highest peak of all the Adriatic Islands and gives you a bit of every vista: the sea, the islands, and the mainland. There’s even a picnic table at the top for that well-deserved lunch you picked up in town earlier.

The hike starts in the village of Bol, so it’s smart to base yourself there. It has dozens and dozens of apartments to choose from and a whole lot of hotels, too.

5. Ogrlice and Roški Slap Loop – A Fun, Easy Hike in Croatia

Ogrlice and Roski Slap Loop A Fun Easy Hike in Croati

If you’re wondering about the name of this hike, don’t worry; slap is the Croatian word for “waterfall” and you won’t actually get slapped while on this trail.

The Ogrlice and Roški Slap Loop is a relatively easy hike in Croatia that can be found in Krka National Park. This slice of wilderness is located in the lower reaches of the Krka River, close to the city of Sibenik.

It happens mostly along boardwalks, though there are some parts where you can move into muddy trails if you’re into that. It’s mostly shaded and the views are incredible all around.

  • Duration: 3 km (1.9 miles), 1 hour or less
  • Difficulty: Easy

Strolling around this loop feels more like being in a painting than anything else, really. The insanely beautiful waterfalls are the main attraction (well, duh), and there’s an abundance of wildlife to enjoy, including Europe’s second-highest density of lavender.

At the end of the loop, you’ll find a reward for your hiking efforts: natural plunge pools where you can take a swim. Best done when it’s hot, obviously, so don’t forget your swimming stuff if you’re coming in the summer.

All in all, it’s a great bet if you’re travelling with young children, or simply feel like going for a chilled stroll in nature.

6. Vosac Peak Hike – The Toughest Hiking Trail in Croatia

Vosac Peak Hike The Toughest Trek in Croatia

The beautiful Biokovo Nature Park is a very popular spot for hiking in Croatia. Situated on the Dalmatian Coast, there are numerous paths here, winding up into hills and mountains filled with olive groves and pine trees.

This park is named after the mountain range it sits on — the highest in Dalmatia and second-highest in Croatia. Its highest peak is Sveti Jure (1,762m), and all its craggy peaks make it seem like they’re hugging the sea.

This trek will have you tackling one of the many peaks of this mountain range, Vosac. It’s tough, but it’s also incredibly beautiful. And even if you consider yourself relatively fit, it might still present a challenge.

  • Duration: 30 km (18.6 miles), 5-6 hours

Starting off in Makarska, the climb starts straight away. The trail, made up of loose stones, is winding and well-marked (signs boast a red circle with a white dot inside).

Eventually, you’ll start to get glimpses of the city below and the sea beyond. With mountains covering the other side, the ascent becomes steeper and rockier. It can get intense, especially when it’s hot, so be sure to pack enough water.

Reaching the top, you can even see as far as Italy!

7. Mount Srd Trail – Best Hiking Trail near Dubrovnik

Mount Srd Trail Best Hike near Dubrovnik

Situated within striking distance of Dubrovnik, the Mount Srd Trail takes you away from the walled city and up into the craggy mountain scenery.

There’s a fortress up here and a large white cross, adding to its scenic feel. And even though it’s only around 400 meters tall, it offers some incredible views of Dubrovnik Old Town and the scattering of islands just off the coast.

People do attempt this in flip-flops, fresh off the beach, but we strongly advise you to not make that decision yourself. There’s a steep ascent involved and the trail itself is quite rocky, so proper shoes are a must.

  • Duration: 5 km (3.1 miles), 1-1.5 hours
  • Type : Return/ One way

The hike itself isn’t the most fun, or beautiful. It’s just a series of zig-zags up the mountain with little to no shade. But it’s not too long, and you’ll be rewarded with that Dubrovnik money shot in the end.

Another bonus is the fact that there’s a restaurant up here. Not bad for a refreshing post-hike beer, and you can always take the cable car down if you’re feeling lazy afterwards.

If you’re staying in Dubrovnik and you’re looking for some hikes, this one is a great place to start.

8. Medvednica Nature Park Loop – Off the Beaten Path Trek in Croatia

Medvednica Nature Park Loop Off the Beaten Path Trek in Croatia

North of Zagreb, you’ll find the mystical wooded Medvednica Nature Park. Just a quick step away from the capital, this park hits differently than Croatia’s usual coastal offerings. And feels way more secluded as a result.

This is where you find the locals, not the tourists.

For a smooth start, we’re recommending a lollipop loop that takes in Trail 52 and Trail 48. With a few nice ascents here and there, you will be walking mostly on flat wooded tracks. By most standards, it’s on the easier side of the hikes in Croatia.

  • Duration: 7 km (4.4 miles), 3 hours
  • Type : loop

You do have more options in the park. With the number of different trails, it’s possible to add a few extra steps and head off in different directions with relative easiness. If you want to make it more difficult for yourself by adding in higher elevations or longer walks, you got it.

But remember to take water and warm clothes, and try to return before the sun goes down — these woods are bigger than you think.

This might be the perfect hike choice if you’re staying in Zagreb . You can even get maps of the park from the Croatian Mountaineering Association, or advice from Zagreb Tourist Information, both of which you’ll find there.

You’ve got quite a few options on your plate when it comes to staying in Croatia. Many people like to stay along the coast, where a lot of its major towns are situated. It’s pretty and it’s laid-back, so there’s no reason to complain.

Split is where all the action is. It’s a bit more central than Dubrovnik, and a great jumping point to the islands of Brac and Hvar. The city itself is also well-connected via roads, public transport, and rail.

Zadar is Croatia’s oldest continuously inhabited city. The epic Velebit Range and the Paklenica National Park are right at its doorstep, so staying here means easy access to hiking spots and a hub to travel further afield.

Where to Stay in Croatia

Then you’ve got Zagreb, the capital city. Transport connections are top-notch, there’s plenty of nature nearby and a wide variety of epic hostels you can choose from. It isn’t the most popular option, as it’s far from the Dalmatian Coast, but it feels like what it is: a real, authentic city.

If you’re going full chill mode, picking one of the islands will probably be a smarter move than the busier capital city of Zagreb.

They’re quite accessible from the mainland and are a great option for going on hikes too. Served as a bite-sized destination, it’s topped with a laid-back vibe and awesome coastal treks. You can hop from one to another as well!

Best Airbnb in Croatia – Ancora City Apartment  – Pula

Ancora City Apartment

Perfect place for a couple, a small family, or a group of three to four friends. Knocking back a glass or two of chilled Croatian vino on the roof terrace will kick your stay off, and things just don’t get worse from there. They just don’t. If you want my honest opinion, this Airbnb is worth the price.

Best Hostel in Croatia – Hostel Angelina Southern – Dubrovnik

Hostel Angelina Southern

Hostel Angelina has the perfect blend of location, atmosphere, and character. For travellers looking for more than the average dorm room sleeping experience, Hostel Angelina is one of the most amazing hostels in Croatia !

Best Hotel in Croatia – Split Inn Apartments – Split

Split Inn Apartments

Admittedly, I tend to stay at hotels the least while traveling. The hotel-apartment hybrid vibe of Split Inn Apartments means that this place can hold its own against all the sexy Airbnb flats in the city, and you’re only a stone’s throw away from the Old Town.

Aether Backpack

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

Want more deetz on why these packs are so  damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!

Putting a packing list together for a Mediterranean vacay is usually all about shorts, t-shirts, and bathing suits. But if you want to sink your teeth into some awesome hiking trails in Croatia, you’re going to need more.

First off, the footwear. While the beach might ask for flip-flops, you’ll need some solid hiking shoes for the trail . Lightweight hiking trainers with a good grip will be fine for most hikes; more strenuous treks will require sturdier boots.

hiker on a misty mountain

The clothes you bring on a hike will vary with the seasons. In the summer, you want breathable clothes that protect you from the sun — a swimsuit will also come in handy to jump into that remote waterfall. In cooler months, it’s all about the layers. Pack a waterproof jacket too.

If you’re planning a multi-day hike in Croatia, more in-depth preparations and packing will be needed. Most of the time, you’ll be carrying food supplies and a sleeping bag on your back.

But even if you’re just going on a short stroll, having a few basic essentials such as a first aid kit , a blister pack, mosquito repellent, and water bottle in your bag will be extremely useful.

To make sure you come fully prepared, here’s a tick-list of things to pack for any hike in Croatia.

Aside from basking in the sunny beaches and exploring the old towns, Backpacking in Croatia equals a lot of nature too. Hiking is the perfect way to uncover the hidden beauties of this Mediterranean country.

You may be on a chilled vacation mindset, but that doesn’t mean you should head off on a hike unprepared. Plan your hike in advance, make sure you leave plenty of time to make your way back in daylight, and always let somebody know where you are going .

Croatia Trail Safety

Trails are often uneven and have sheer drops, which means hiking in beach sandals or unsuitable clothing is not a good idea. Covering up is also advised – in some wooded areas, ticks can become an issue.

Also, respect the sun. That shit’s strong. Croatia gets really hot in the summer, and many hiking paths are not shaded.

When it rains, rocky paths get muddy and slippery. In the winter, mountain grounds may get a covering of snow. Always check the weather!

Bring enough water for the hike, as well as sunscreen. Add a hat and sunglasses, and you’re good to go.

No matter where you choose to hike in Croatia, one thing is for sure: you need travel insurance . It’s important to count on that extra security blanket to help you out — you never know when you might need it.

Don’t Forget Your Croatia Travel Insurance

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Here’s what people usually ask us about the best hikes in Croatia…

What are the best Croatian Hiking Tours?

Croatia has a wealth of hiking available, but some of the best tours revolve around the unbelievable Plitvice lakes . These are composed of an upper and lower set of lakes and are surrounded by some of the most amazing scenery. Take care though! The lakes can get super busy in peak tourist season, so try to avoid this if you can.

Is there any good hiking in Split, Croatia?

Yes! Since Split is surrounded by a jagged crop of tasty mountains (including the formidable Veliki Kabal) there are even some moderately difficult hikes on offer. I would recommend Vickov Stup as an achievable peak for keen explorers, and Marjan hill for something a little more relaxed. The Krk waterfalls aren’t far away either, and definitely worth the transport costs!

Can I go hut-to-hut hiking in Croatia?

Absolutely! Tackling either the Velebit trail or the Premuži? Trail will give you a bunch of huts to move between. There are lots of huts, especially in the national parks, and along mountain trails. Generally, if there is a path going up a mountain for more than 6 hours, there will be a hut somewhere along it. Don’t hold me to that, because you should still check first.

What are the best Croatian hiking vacations?

Since Croatia is so awesome (and stuffed with epic views), you don’t really have to plan your visit around hiking. Split, Dubrovnik, and a bunch of other super famous Croatian towns are all surrounded by incredible hikes pretty organically. It is definitely worth making a detour to the Northern Velebit national park, or the Dinaric Alps in the north if you want the serious serious stuff though!

So there you have it, some of the best hikes in Croatia! Whilst I didn’t go into extreme detail, hopefully there is enough here to stimulate some plans, the pulling out of some dusty hiking gear, and an emarkation on the trail…

Remember, always pack a water bottle, a fresh pair of socks, and more snacks than you think. It gets hungry out there, and your mate Terrance gets hangry as hell.

Love, peace, and well wishes on your soon-to-be life-changing Croatian hike…

HIKING TOURS IN CROATIA

Croatia is an enchanting nation of historic seafarers, walled fortresses, and white stone landscapes. ryder walker’s croatian hikes explore the coastal national parks of croatia while hopping between a selection of iconic islands off the croatian coast including korčula and pomona .these islands are lost-in-time enclaves of adriatic culture, sporting red slate-roofed buildings, the famous cobalt blue adriatic water, and healthy servings of local seafood.  .

Croatian culture is one of the most welcoming in the world. Tourism remains an exciting new possibility for the Croatian people, who, by and large, are thrilled to share their rich history, culinary traditions, and mythos . In Croatia, the surviving brutalist architecture from the Soviet Era sticks out in a striking way against the backdrop of cobalt blue waters and winding beaches. While Croatia itself was considered a largely war-torn country following the conflicts of the 20th century, today the nation has engaged in large scale reconstructions of their historic locations and preservation of the country’s unique coastal-desert biome. Throughout history, dating back even to the seafaring days of the Greeks and Romans, Croatia has been represented as a critical port, and it is easy to see why with the Italian shoreline visible across the Adriatic. Today, Croatian culture involves a hearty dose of beach relaxation, lively nightlife, and a plethora of fresh fish and seafood. Sitting eating a plate of calamari while you listen to the waves and look out at the distant lights of a fishing village on a neighboring island is an experience that can’t be replicated anywhere else in the world.

Ryder-Walker offers both guided and self-guided treks in Croatia. For our guided hikes we offer the Highlights of the Adriatic Trek , which combines the best parts of Croatia with our favourite hikes in Montenegro. Our self-guided hike is the excellent Dalmatian Coast Trek , which gives a comprehensive experience of Croatia.   Highlights of these hikes include: the ancient Beech forests of Biokovo and Lovćen National Parks and a distinctly more nautical experience as we board ferries to explore the Adriatic. The islands of Korčula and Pomona cast a distinctive contrast with each other, with a collection of fishing villages straight from the odyssey and beautiful seaside resorts. Finally, our journey finishes in the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik , the shooting location for Game of Thrones’ King’s Landing. The city itself looks no less fantastical than it does in the show, feeling like a direct portal into the past.

Croatia amazed us when we first visited years ago, and the coastal nation continues to impress us year after year. The hiking in the national parks is consistently incredible, with easy to access summits providing stunning views of the entire peninsula. Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Where To Go Hiking In Croatia

1. hiking plitvice lakes loop.

PLITVICE LAKES - CROATIA TRAVEL BLOG

Located halfway between Zagreb and Zadar, Plitvice Lakes is one of the most popular national parks in the country. This UNESCO-recognized natural feature comprises beautiful woodlands, spectacular views, gorgeous waterfalls, and approximately 16 interconnected lakes. It’s also filled with plenty of wildlife, such as bears, deer, wild boars, hedgehogs, martens, voles, and mink, to name a few.

The hike starts near Entrance 1. It will then take you on a tour of all the bigger lakes in this loop. You will also come across several beautiful waterfalls along the way.

This loop will also pass close to the Gustav Janecek Memorial. You can also stop by for a swim in one of the lakes, especially during those hot days.

Due to its popularity among hikers, there’s a high chance you will come across crowds. To minimize such issues, hitting the trail as early as possible, probably around 7 am to 8 am, will be highly advisable.

There are several hotels around Entrance 2 and a campground if you plan to spend the night.

Also, you can explore several other trails  in this area , especially if you are a seasoned hiker. But, if you are a beginner or have never been in this area before, this loop is the most recommended. And the best part is that you will have finished traversing it within three to four hours.

  • Trail length: 12km
  • Difficulty level: Easy
  • Hiking time: Approximately 3 to 4 hours
  • How to get there: Rental car , bus, or private transfer

2. Velebit Hiking Trail

Paklenica National Park - Paklenica, Starigrad, Velebit Canyon

The Velebit Hiking Trail is one of the best hikes in Croatia if you are looking for a multi-day hike. The entire trail is around 100 kilometers. You will hike through small, rural towns, rugged peaks, and rolling green hills. Also, you will have an opportunity to spend your nights in mountain huts spread along the way.

However, the available space in these mountain huts is quite limited. Therefore, make sure you book well in advance.

It’s worth mentioning this hike is quite demanding. So, make sure you pack enough food supplies in your hiking backpack. You should also remember to pack proper hiking gear since you will be on the trail for several days.

The entire trail is adequately maintained and easy to follow. Also, it’s clearly marked. Hence, no bushwhacking will be needed. You can begin your hike in Babic Sica, the trail’s information center.

You can hike upwards to the Zavizan hut, which will only take a few hours. Once you are there, you will have ample time to explore the nearby peaks.

The best time to hike this trail is during the summer . During this time, the weather is stable and friendlier. You will be required to pay an entry fee of around $7 for the Northern Velebit National Park.

  • Trail length: 100 km
  • Estimated hiking time: 9 days
  • Level: Hard to moderate

Game Of Thrones Dubrovnik Locations (1)

You can start or end your hike at the Gate of Pile, the old town’s main entrance. It will be highly advisable to walk this trail early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the conditions are a bit friendly. Also, these are the best hiking times if you are looking to avoid crowds .

4. Hiking The Via Dinarica White Trail

q

The Via Dinarica is one of the newest hiking trails established in Croatia. It runs from the south of Slovenia to the north of Albania . You can opt to tackle the entire trail or just a section of it, depending on your hiking experience and how long you will be around. But it’s filled with spectacular views every mile along the way.

If you are a seasoned hiker and have the time to spare, you can tackle the entire trail. It connects all the most beautiful sections of the Dinaric Alps. Also, it connects some of the most beautiful mountain regions in the country.

Besides the White Trail, you can also opt to tackle the Blue Trail (mountain trail) or the Green Trail (forest trail), depending on your preferences.

As mentioned earlier, this trail is relatively new. Hence, some sections along the way are poorly marked and badly maintained. But, as long as you have a reliable GPS and a well-detailed map, you are good to go.

Remember to bring your camera; you will have plenty of opportunities to capture memorable, beautiful photos.

  • Hiking duration: 410 hours
  • How to get there: Bus or car

5. Milna Coastal Walk

Hiking Croatia - Town of Milna waterfront and marina view

You should check out the Milna Coastal Walk if you love hiking in coastal areas and sandy beaches . This trail is located on Hvar Island , one of Croatia’s best coastal getaways. Hvar Island is a short distance from Split. And a ferry ride will get you there within two hours or even less.

Thousands of hikers come here yearly to savor the region’s hidden beaches, gorgeous seas, and rugged Dalmatian coast. The trail starts at the harbor based in Hvar Town . You will then follow a paved coastal walkway, which will take you to Mustado Bay. This walk should take you around 30 minutes or so. There’s an eatery along the way where you can stop to refuel. There’s also a beach along the trail, where you can take a quick dip.

From Mustado Bay, the trail becomes increasingly rugged, occasionally shifting between the Adriatic coast and the woodland. The trail will take you through forests, beaches, and bays. After around 20 minutes, you will come across a bay, where you can go for a swim and relax. There’s also an eatery, which doubles as a bar and restaurant. Eventually, you will find yourself at Milna.

The entire course features rocky terrain, which is quite challenging. Hence, make sure you come with a comfortable pair of hiking boots . It would be best if you also considered bringing a pair of walking poles.

Most sections of this trail go through dense forests, which provide adequate shade. Therefore, it will be an ideal hike for those hot summer months. As the trail nears the end, you will come across an old military facility, which is quite impressive.

The views along this trail are nothing short of spectacular. Also, the trail’s end is close to Croatia’s border with Bosnia and Herzegovina . Hence, you will also enjoy striking views of rolling landscapes and lush green forests in both countries.

  • Trail length: 12 km
  • Hiking duration: 5 to 6 hours
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • How to get there: Train, bus or taxi

7. Hiking Vidova Gora Trail

Hiking Croatia - View on mountains and sea from Vidova Gora on Brac island

The Vidova Gora trail is yet another challenging trail. But it’s gratifying if you can manage to go the entire length. If you are hiking this trail during the summer, you should ensure you carry adequate water and sun protection since there’s minimal shade. Also, you should ensure you start your hike as early as possible to minimize sun exposure.

You will start your hike on a gravel road in the village of Bol. From there, the trail will take you through a rough mountain path, with lots of local sheep and wildflowers to keep you company.

The summit of the Vidova Gora mountain is simply spectacular. Considering it’s the highest peak in this region, it will give picturesque views of the entire Adriatic region, from the Adriatic Sea to the islands and the mainland .

  • Trail length: Approximately 11 km
  • Hiking duration: 3 to 4 hours
  • Difficulty: Intermediate to difficult
  • How to get there: Bus or private car

8. Mljet Island Hike Through

THINGS TO DO IN CROATIA - mljet national park

Mljet Island is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful islands in Croatia. It also provides a great hiking experience, and thanks to the spectacular views, it serves the entire route.

The trail runs from Sobra to Pomena. Depending on your hiking pace, you can cover the entire course within two days. Most sections of this trail run through lush, green forests. Therefore, you will be shielded from the scorching rays of the sun. You can also opt to climb to one of the summits if you are looking for scenic views.

Unlike other trails in this region, this one is easy to get onto. You must board at Prapratno, which will take you directly to Sobra. As much as this trail is relatively new, it’s well-marked throughout.

One of the best things about the island of Mljet is that more than 70% of its surface is covered with forest. So, you will be surrounded by nature regardless of where you look or go. There are lots of great, short hikes which you can discover. You can also opt to explore the Odyssey’s Cave, which is quite popular with vacationers. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or not, this island is worth a visit.

  • Length: 33 km
  • Estimated hiking duration: 2 days

The trail starts at Makarska , where the climb upward begins right away. After around 5 to 6 hours of climbing, you will make it to the peak, enjoying the beautiful views below. Most sections of this trail feature loose stones. Therefore, make sure you carry appropriate shoes.

As noted above, this hike is challenging . Hence, make sure you come prepared. If you are not in good physical condition, then it will be highly advisable to explore other hiking options. Also, pack enough water, especially if you are hiking during the warm months.

General good-to-knows when hiking in Croatia

Nugal Beach trail, Makarska, Croatia

Let me share some of the Croatia hiking trips that we’d have loved to know beforehand:

Trail navigation. Trails are well-marked and signposted, you find huts along longer mountain routes. But easy navigation doesn’t mean you can complete the trails in your beach sandals, without any preparation.

Makarska, Croatia

here’s a mountain to hike: mighty Biokovo towering above Makarska

Proper footwear. First of all, the Croatian coastline is rocky, and trails are often uneven. We recommend wearing proper hiking shoes even on the beach trails, because you don’t want to accidentally kick into rocks barefoot or twist your ankle.

Sun protection. Many trails, especially in the coastal mountains, are not shaded. Cover your head and shoulders, apply plenty of sunscreen regularly and drink lots of water. 2 liter per person per day is the bare minimum. If you choose a strenuous trail, count with 3 liters.

Hiking to Kula peak in the Omiš Dinara, Croatia

Ticks. It’s wise to cover up on forest trails, too. Ticks are a risk in some wooded areas. The most effective way to protect yourself? Check every inch of your skin while taking a shower at the end of the day. If you find a tick, remove it with a tweezer as soon as possible. We often actually swept ticks off our arms or legs right on the spot. Light clothing makes it easier to notice them.

Check the weather forecast. The Croatian coast might be sunny throughout the summer months, but mountains can be hit by sudden storms. Rocky trails get slippery when wet. Also, don’t expect any trail to be passable year-round, mountains get snow in winter.

Best Croatia hiking trails

The best day hike in croatia: plitvice lakes national park loop.

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Probably the most well-known of all the Croatia hikes is the full day loop trail in Plitvice Lakes National Park. With 16 perfectly emerald terraced lakes joined by waterfalls, Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most fabulous ones in all of Europe!

If you only have one day for hiking, spend that day hiking in Plitvice National Park. Walking by the crystal clear lakes and with small waterfalls thundering at your feet, this is an unforgettable water wonderland.

The highest waterfall in the park is 78 meters tall Veliki Slap (Great Fall). But honestly, the waterfalls of Plitvice don’t enchant with their size, but with their beauty . They look so pretty and are located in such a stunning setting that you won’t care that most of them are not particularly high waterfalls.

You don’t have to hike that much to see the most famous sights in the park , if you can’t or don’t want to. Ferry routes link the Upper and Lower Lakes areas where easy trails and boardwalks take you to most of the waterfalls. But we recommend a full day loop hike to truly experience the park – and find some solitude on the way.

Route K: 6-8 hours loop around the park

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

This is a place where you don’t even need a trail map. The boardwalks are straightforward, the connecting trails are well-marked, and the national park provides pre-planned visiting routes which are available to download from their website , as well. These visiting tours are marked with letters, from A to K, and their length varies from 2-3 hours to 6-8 hours.

Surely choose route K, the longest one! It takes a full day, but it leads you to every highlight in the park, and also to some quieter paths which are not included in the shorter routes. You can start at both Entrance 1 or 2, it’s a loop trail, so it makes little difference.

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

The Great Fall, the Upper Lakes and Lower Lakes are the busiest areas, but they’re incredibly picturesque, too. Between them lies Lake Kozjak, and instead of the ferry, you hike along its western shore on the way from the Lower to the Upper Lakes. After exploring the Upper Lakes area an electric boat takes you to the eastern shore of Lake Kozjak where you hike back to your starting point.

When to go?

This is a park that’s wonderful any time of the year. However, hiking trails are closed in the winter season, you can only visit the Lower Lakes area on boardwalk. Fall colors are spectacular though, late spring is just as colorful, and summer is lush green and crowded.

Hiking around the lakes of Plitvice is pleasant even on hot summer days, but you better purchase your ticket in advance ( here ) if you visit in the summer. It’s the busiest time, and visitors numbers are limited, so if you just go to the entrance and try to buy a ticket, there might not be any available time slot to enter that day.

The best half day hike in the Velebit mountains: Veliki Zavižan, Northern Velebit National Park

Hiking to Veliki Zavižan, Northern Velebit National Park, Croatia

Do you want to combine wonderful coastal views with dramatic mountain views? Are you road tripping along the Adriatic coastline? Then don’t miss a stop in Northern Velebit National Park when you drive through the Lika-Senj region, and Veliki Zavižan, one of the shortest and most scenic Velebit hiking trails.

Velebit is a 145 kilometers long mountain range in the Dinaric Alps that towers above the coast, and actually, it’s the border between continental and Mediterranean Croatia. It’s a very special place as such. After looking up to its white, bare rocks from the coast, you wouldn’t expect the greenery you’ll find on the other side of the mountain that doesn’t face the sea. After the sunny and warm weather on the coast, you wouldn’t expect that an extra sweater and a windbreaker could still feel not enough up there.

It’s rich in karst formations and amazing coastal vistas, but you have to hike for them, and there are not many easy and short trails in this park. The most well-known trail is the 57 km long Premužić Trail that spans through the whole park. What if you only want to get a taste of it, then continue your scenic drive on the coast? We asked the same question, and our answer turned out to be the trail to Veliki Zavižan peak.

How to reach Veliki Zavižan peak?

Hiking to Veliki Zavižan, Northern Velebit National Park, Croatia

If you drive up from the coast, then this trail starts with an amazing scenic drive for you. Take the narrow, winding road towards Oltari, and enjoy a better and better view after each hairpin curve.

You can drive to the Babić Sića parking and tourist information. This is the place to pay the entrance fee to the national park, and start the trail towards Veliki Zavižan. The beginning is an easy forest trail, but soon you reach large meadows and rocky peaks – and the first panoramic views!

It’ll likely get very windy as you get higher. Velebit is famous for its “wind tunnels”, and it was crazy to experience how accurate this name is. There are areas where the wind is extremely strong, and we got chilled to the bone as we hiked through these “wind tunnels”.

Optional detours on your way to Veliki Zavižan are Vučjak peak and Velika Kosa peaks. The reason we skipped them was that it started getting foggy, and we wanted to reach Veliki Zavižan before the fog did. We didn’t succeed. Hence the best views we’ve seen were the panoramas at lower areas. We could only imagine how perfect that panorama from the peak would be. We waited some time and had snacks, but the peak was so windy, and the fog was only getting more dense, so we turned back. Hiking Croatia is not all about enjoying sunshine.

How hard is this trail?

Hiking to Veliki Zavižan, Northern Velebit National Park, Croatia

That’s how Velebit is though: harsh and unpredictable all year, but such a stunning, untouched wilderness. Just dress up well, no matter how hot it is on the coast.

It’s a steady uphill hike partly on forest paths and partly on uneven, rocky terrain. There’s a steeper section right before Zavižan peak. We did this hike with Tomi who had just learned to walk at that time. He could practice his walking skills on the forest trail in the beginning, and Csaba carried him later. Older kids can do this trail on their own if they have the stamina.

The best hike near Zagreb: Sljeme, Medvednica Nature Park

Medvednica Nature Park is only 30 minutes drive from Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. Neither Zagreb , nor Medvednica are among the jaw dropping Insta stars of Croatia, but that’s exactly their charm. We enjoyed casually strolling through Zagreb on an early spring long weekend trip, and we took a day trip to hike to Sljeme, the highest peak of Medvenica, too.

This park is the prettiest in early spring when crocuses bloom, and in the fall when the seasonal forest turns yellow and orange. In summer, it offers shaded forest trails, and it’s the place where you find locals, not tourists. It offers the best hiking opportunities in Croatia near Zagreb.

Medvednica Nature Park, Croatia

Bikčevićeva Trail to Sljeme peak

Medvednica Nature Park offers a large network of well-marked hiking trails, and we chose the one that took us up to the highest peak: 1033 meters high Sljeme. Not being a particularly high mountain, Sljeme is a good hiking destination almost all year. It does get snow in the winter, but it’s still easily accessible, because there are ski slopes at the top.

Even though one could drive up to Sljeme, where’s the fun in that? Leave your car in the parking lot at Bikčevićeva staza , and follow the forest trail along a small creek, and then through wildflower meadows. Sljeme peak in the end offers nice views of the surrounding landscape.

Bikčevićeva staza is also the name of the bus stop, and yes, it’s easily reachable from Zagreb by bus, as well.

The best hike near Rijeka: Veliki Risnjak, Risnjak National Park

Veliki Risnjak, Risnjak National Park, Croatia

Risnjak is one of the least known national parks of Croatia, and it could be a delightful stop on your way from Zagreb to Dalmatia or Istria. Continental and Mediterranean climate collide here, and it’s a forest kingdom, with giant rocky peaks rising above and offering views all the way to the Adriatic Sea. It’s also home to Croatia’s most beautiful river: River Kupa.

Actually, if you only have half a day to visit Risnjak National Park, we recommend taking a short hike to the source of River Kupa and then along the river. However, if you have a full day, you can choose to conquer 1528 meters high Veliki Risnjak, with an astonishing 360 degrees panorama of the surrounding mountains and the Adriatic Sea in the distance.

The trail to Veliki Risnjak starts from the park administration in Crni Lug. You can do it as a loop, hiking on Horvat Trail on the way there (it’s steeper, so easier to do when you ascend), then on Markov brlog trail on the way back to Crni Lug. The most impressive part of this hike is definitely the last, steep ascent from the mountain hut to Veliki Risnjak peak. Giant rock formations and panoramic views impress near and far. Otherwise it’s a steadily ascending/descending forest trail, narrow at times, but not technical.

It’s among the less touristy hiking trails in Croatia, in a not so well-known park – and who knows for how long?

The best hike near Zadar: Mala and Velika Paklenica canyons, Paklenica National Park

Velika Paklenica, Paklenica National Park, Croatia

A full day loop hike through Mala and Velika Paklenica canyons is thrilling and spectacular – and also challenging. But don’t miss Paklenica National Park in any case if you visit the Zadar area. It has the most astonishing karst river canyons in Croatia!

Just do the trail in Velika Paklenica if you want to make it easier – or you’re with small kids or a baby in the carrier. Because the loop trail through the two canyons is for experienced hikers only and involves a lot of rock scrambling, mainly in Mala Paklenica canyon . The path through Velika Paklenica is easier, wide and ascends evenly for the most part. It gets more steep and narrow towards the end of the canyon, but that’s where you get the best views.

However, we recommend that you decide whether you do both canyons or only Velika Paklenica before you start your day . In case you do both of them, start with Mala Paklenica, because it’s the harder one, and it’s better to do it on your way up. We have a detailed hiking guide to this loop here , read it before you go!

The best hike near Šibenik: waterfall walk in Krka National Park

Krka National Park, Croatia

Even though Plitvice gets most of the fame, Croatia has another impressive waterfall park: Krka. It’s located very close to Šibenik, but it’s suitable for a day trip from Zadar, too, and it offers one of the easiest and most beautiful Croatia walking trails. So the question is: would you like to walk along the emerald green Krka River and its picturesque travertine waterfalls? This one is really more of a walk than an actual hike, you can even wear your beach sandals.

Easy forest paths and boardwalks take you around Skradinski buk, the main highlight of the national park. It’s the longest of the waterfalls on Krka River, and it’s actually a series of 17(!) waterfalls with a drop of 50 meters in total. But it’s not the size that’s the most impressive here (again), rather the beauty of the travertine terraces, little islands and pools that separates the waterfalls.

Skradinski buk is one of the seven travertine waterfalls in the park, and they’re among the prettiest natural karst phenomenon in the Dinaric karst region. An easy walking trail is established in the area so that you can have plenty of views of all the waterfalls from many different angles.

Skradinski buk, Krka National Park, Croatia

You can start the walk from the park entrance (Entrance Lozovac, which is the main road entrance), or you can take the free shuttle directly to Skradinski buk. The walk is lovely and not at all demanding though (~800 meters), so don’t miss it. Walking around the waterfalls may add another kilometer. It’s a pleasant stroll in any season.

And what if you want to hike more? Read our detailed guide about Krka National Park here , with more hiking options.

The best hike near Omiš: Kula peak, Omiška Dinara Mountains

Hiking to Kula peak in the Omiš Dinara, Croatia

How about a scenic half day coastal hike in Central Dalmatia ? Kula peak (863 m) is the highest peak of the Omiška Dinara, and while 800-something meters doesn’t sound impressive, this trail is one of the most picturesque coastal hiking trails in Croatia.

It’s a rocky terrain, barely any trees block your views of Omiš, the Adriatic Sea and the islands below you. And it’s topped with a breathtaking 360 degrees panorama from Kula peak at the end .

Park your car past the village of Borak. There’s no parking lot, just a few pullouts by the road, suitable for a few cars. (Our car was the only one.) You’ll already have quite nice views of Omiš and the coastline, and giant white rocks tower above you.

Hiking to Kula peak in the Omiš Dinara, Croatia

Prepare for a sweaty uphill hike, with some steeper and slippery sections. This is definitely one of the trails where proper hiking boots are a must! The final ascent to Kula peak is the most challenging, we hopped from rock to rock through the large boulder field, and rock scrambling is also involved in conquering the summit. But we got the reward – no complaints. 🙂

This hike offers barely any shade, so if you do it in the summer, aim for early morning or late afternoon. We enjoyed fabulous sea sunset views on our way down!

The best hike near Makarska: Vošac, Biokovo Nature Park

Makarska, Croatia

view of Biokovo from Makarska (publishing pictures taken in the nature park is not permitted)

Biokovo Mountains are the dramatic backdrop for any beach on the Makarska Riviera. You can conquer Biokovo from the coast (very strenuous trails!), or you can drive up to Biokovo Nature Park. It’s accessible by paved road, but expect it to be a challenging drive.

The road to 1166 meters high Sveti Jure is extremely narrow and has countless hairpin curves. You often have to back up when someone arrives from the opposite direction. However, short and easy trails take you to amazing viewpoints from this road .

Our favorite is Vošac peak that can be reached in 30 minutes from the roadside parking area, and offers views of the Makarska Riviera and the islands from above. Sveti Jure summit can compete with those views, but it’s not even a hike, just a short walk from the parking lot at the end of the road. You can do both as part of a half day visit to Biokovo Nature Park.

Keep in mind that Biokovo is just as bare as it looks from the coast, so there will be no shade. Visit early or late in the day in the summer months.

Best beach trails in Croatia

Cape Kamenjak, Istria, Croatia

If you travel to Croatia in the midst of summer, you might not want to do many (or any) hikes, because you’d rather spend your time on the beaches. My suggestion: at least pick some beach hikes!

One reason is that beaches that require some walking or hiking never get as crowded as the most easily accessible ones. On the other hand, these beach trails that I’m showing you are incredibly pretty. Start them early in the morning, so that you can reach the beach by the time it gets too hot, then spend the rest of the day there.

Cape Kamenjak, Istria, Croatia

Here are my favorite beach hikes in Croatia, from north to south along the Adriatic coastline:

Coastal trails at Cape Kamenjak, Istria

Radovica cove, Cape Kamenjak, Istria, Croatia

Are you looking for the most crystal clear, unspoilt beaches in Istria? Head to Cape Kamenjak Nature Park! It’s home to some of our favorite beaches in all of Croatia. Though most beaches are accessible by a short walk from their own parking lot, many of them are also connected by a coastal walking trail. Grabbing your backpack to explore all the bays along the coastal path and stopping for a swim as many times as you want in the meantime is a great itinerary for the day.

Kolombarica cove, Cape Kamenjak, Istria, Croatia

There are two routes that we found the most scenic, and they also include the best beaches of Cape Kamenjak: hike from Pinižule Bay to Njive Bay (see on the map here ), and hike from Radovica Bay to Sv. Mikule Dražica cove (see on the map here ). Along the first route we liked the turquoise cove of Plovanije the most, and we had too many favorites along the second route: secluded Radovica cove, then Mala Kolombarica and Velika Kolombarica for snorkeling.

Even though both of these walks are short (about 1.5 hours there and back), dedicate two separate days to them if you want to spend time swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing or just chilling out on the beaches.

Cape Kamenjak, Istria, Croatia

Please note that entrance fee is payable for each motor vehicle that enters Cape Kamenjak Nature Park. Parking is included in the entrance fee, so no separate fee for parking or toilets within the park. Walkers and cyclists can enter free of charge.

Hike from Baška to Vela Luka Bay, Krk Island

Hiking to Vela Luka Bay, Krk, Croatia

Vela Luka Bay is one of the most remote beaches on Krk. Beautiful, unspoilt. But to access it you either need a boat, or do a 2 hours hike from Baška. The trail is scenic, it led us through a wild, rocky landscape, with pretty views of Baška Bay, the coastline, the mainland and other islands on the way. But start it early, because there’s no shade.

Our favorite viewpoint was that of Vela Luka and nearby Mala Luka Bays from above. Since we visited Krk in September, and it was a chilly, rainy day, we didn’t descend to the beach, but did another short hike in the area instead. The perfect “hot summer day itinerary” definitely includes swimming in this crystal clear bay though.

Vela Luka Bay, Krk Island, Croatia

Hike from Baška Beach to Bag, Krk Island

Bag, Krk, Croatia

This is a weird kind of beach hike, because you start and end at the beach, and you don’t need to hike for it. But there’s something else that’s worth the effort here. If you visit Baška Beach, we recommend hiking up to Bag viewpoint either at the beginning or at the end of the day. There’s absolutely no shade on the trail, but it also means astonishing scenery all the way.

A moderately difficult path takes you up from Baška Beach to 185 meters high Bag peak. Optionally, you can continue a bit further to 220 meters high Ljubimer peak. Bag viewpoint was the better of the two though. 🙂 And as ridiculous as a 100-something high peak sounds, the views from there are breathtaking! The rocky coastline and the uninhabited island of Otok Prvić in contrast with the deep blue Adriatic Sea – it looks stunning.

Trail to Bag viewpoint, Krk, Croatia

We chose a different path on our way back. It was not directly on the coast, but among the large rocks, offering incredibly close views of them , and also some views of Baška Bay.

A final remark: there’s a reason that these coastal hills are completely bare. It’s windy! Trees and bushes can’t survive the salty winds, and you need to stand it on the peak, too. You might be grateful for it on a hot day, but pack a windbreaker on cloudy days.

Hike from Ručica Beach to Beriknica Beach, Pag Island

Hiking to Beriknica Beach, Pag, Croatia

Ručica Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Pag island, but it has a hidden sister that we liked even more: Beriknica Beach. It’s located in the next bay, but there’s no road to it, only a walking trail from Ručica Beach.

It’s a 30 minutes walk, but don’t do it in flip-flops or sandals. The terrain is rocky and uneven, and there’s a steep downhill to Beriknica Bay at the end. However, the landscape makes all the effort worth it. With the yellow and white cliffs and absolutely no plants around, it feels like you’re on planet Mars. Only there’s the Adriatic Sea to jump in at the end.

Beriknica Beach, Pag, Croatia

However, there’s no shade on the trail or on the beach. Take a compact beach tent with you, if you want to have some shade throughout the day. Also, Beriknica Beach has larger pebbles than nearby Ručica, so wear your water shoes in order not to hurt your feet. But it’s much less crowded, and the beach views, including the giant rock formations towering above you, are more special than those from Ručica Beach. All in all, we vote for Beriknica Beach, but you can also share your day between the two as they’re so close.

Beriknica Beach, Pag, Croatia

Hike to Nugal Beach from Makarska

Nugal Beach trail, Makarska, Croatia

Even though Nugal beach technically belongs to Makarska, one of the most popular beach towns on the Dalmatian coast, it feels remote. Because it’s remote, and you need to hike about an hour to reach it. But what a trail it is!

It starts from the harbor of Makarska and runs along the coast, with views of turquoise bays and through vibrant green pine forests. And it ends at one of the most special Croatian beaches: pebbly Nugal Beach, backed up by a giant, vertical rock wall.

Nugal Beach trail, Makarska, Croatia

You might read that Nugal Beach is a nudist beach, and earlier it was. But no matter how out of town it is, this beauty attracts crowds and tourists, so it’s not a hidden place for nudists anymore . With that said, half of the beach is still officially a nudist beach. What does that look like? There’s a separator sign in the middle of the pebbly beach, and on one side stays everyone who wears swimsuits, on the other side everyone’s naked. It’s a bit strange, yes.

But honestly, after a few weeks in Croatia after the high season, we bumped into nudists anywhere that was just a little bit out of sight, so we kinda got used to it by then.

At the end of the day, hike above Nugal Beach. It’s a short, steep detour to a viewpoint called Gradac which is the best place to take pictures of the beach from above (not just because you don’t really take pictures on the beach, respectful of the nudists, but because it’s the very best angle!).

Nugal Beach trail, Makarska, Croatia

Time your hike a bit before sunset, so that you can marvel at the colors on your way back, and reach the harbor lights just as darkness falls.

Coastal trail in Mljet National Park, Mljet Island

Mljet, Croatia

Our favorite beach on Mljet? No, not the famous salt lakes, nor any of the sandy beaches (they would be Tomi’s favorite, but we visited Mljet before his arrival to the family). We loved them, but what really knocked us off our feet was the hidden rocky coves with their azure water in Mljet National Park .

Right, you need to hike to reach them. But it’s a pretty coastal trail, and you can stop at several places to jump in – almost anywhere, actually, because the trail runs directly on the coast. However, it’s a rocky coastline, and these coves don’t have a smooth beach entrance.

You need water shoes , and also consider the wind conditions, because some coves can be dangerous if the waves are too big. In exchange, you’ll most likely meet no one, and the water is so clear that you see everything underneath even without a snorkeling mask. But don’t forget the snorkeling set if you have it, because the coves are great for snorkeling, too.

How to get there? The paved road ends past the village of Pomena, and you can leave your car in the parking lot there. Then just follow the coastal path. This map gives a good idea of the trail, however, not all the possible routes are marked here. You can get a bit further along the coast if you scramble on the rocks.

how to plan a trip to Croatia?

Which is the best time to hike in Croatia?

Beriknica Beach, Pag, Croatia

We think that September is the absolute best time to visit Croatia if you want to take advantage of all the things it offers: beaches, hiking and sightseeing. Summer crowds have thinned out by September, the weather can still feel like summer, and the Adriatic Sea is as warm as it can get after the hottest months (~23°C / 73°F).

However, May is just as perfect for hiking . Whether you’d actually swim at the end of the beach hikes depends on your cold tolerance. Sea temperature is around 17-19°C (62-66°F) by May, but hiking is surely more enjoyable than in hot July or August. Also, it’s not tourist season yet, so the coast is quieter – and the prices are lower.

Krk Island, Croatia

While September can feel like summer, October won’t. It’s more chilly and rainy, so pack sweaters and rain jackets for your visit. April can be similarly whimsical, but still suitable for hiking. Visiting before or after summer also means you’ll pay less for national park entrance fees. In some cases you can save parking fees, too, because some parking lots charge only in the summer.

What about winter? While the Adriatic coast typically doesn’t get snow, it gets strong winds and storms which makes it not such a pleasant place in the winter months. The continental area has proper winter, and it’s the season for skiing in the mountains (like Sljeme in Medvednica Nature Park).

What to wear when hiking in Croatia?

After telling you about the best hiking trails in Croatia, let’s see what to wear while hiking there. Because a short and a sleeveless top won’t suffice.

Oprna Bay hike, Krk, Croatia

Wide brim hat : preferably with a neck strap so it won’t blow off on a windy hike. Don’t ever go anywhere outside without a hat in the summer, as it protects your face and neck where the skin is the most sensitive.

UPF 50+ hiking shirt : A quality sunscreen is important, but the most effective protection is covering as much skin as possible. I know, the temptation for a sleeveless top is huge, especially on the sunny coastal trails, but your skin will thank you if you resist and choose a top that covers your shoulder. A breezy, lightweight and light colored shirt with a good UPF rating is the best. This one is great , because you can roll up the sleeves, converting the long sleeves into short sleeves for hot summer days.

Convertible hiking pants : in the summer, you might wear shorts, but in other seasons the mornings and evenings can be surprisingly chilly, and if the wind blows, temperatures feel suddenly much colder. This is especially true in the Velebit mountains. These convertible hiking pants allow you to wear shorts in the hottest part of the day, then “upgrade” them to full-length hiking pants if the weather gets cooler. These lightweight, breathable cargo pants are adjustable, too, and they’re available in lots of colors.

Swimwear & dry bag for wet clothes : if you hike in the summer, don’t forget to bring your swimwear on any trail that leads to a beach. A small dry bag comes handy to carry any wet clothes or towels.

Rain jacket : a lightweight, hooded and breathable rain jacket should be in your bag on any longer hike. You never know when a shower catches you, especially outside of the summer months.

Bandana or buff : I love a light, stretchy bandana, because it’s extremely versatile. You can wear it as a hat, scarf or headband, to cover your neck and to keep your hair out of your face.

Day pack with a rain cover : on any longer trail you’ll need a proper backpack to store food, water, spare clothes and all the essential things you might need for the hike. Choose a day pack with a rain cover so that you don’t need to worry about your gadgets getting wet if you’re caught in a shower.

Hikes in Croatia’s mountainous areas provide views to die for and you can easily choose trails to suit any ability and timescale. Many of Croatia’s most amazing mountain trails aren’t too far from the coast either, making it perfectly doable to explore the heady peaks as well as the extravagant coastline.

Imagine hiking up through rough terrain, pine forests providing shelter from the sun before you emerge near the summit. You head onwards and at the top you turn around. Below, you can see the sparkling blue sea and a chain of islands. This is what it’s like to explore hikes in Croatia’s coastal Lika region.

The Dinaric Alps run the entire length of the country and it’s within this vast range chain that you’ll find some of the best hiking trails in Croatia. In the Lika region, just north of Zadar, the mountains form an incredible stretch of landscape containing two national parks, Northern Velebit and Paklenica.

This is karst landscape, a geological formation created by soluble rock, such as limestone and dolomite, where sections dissolve leaving vast caves. Karst formations can make for fascinating sights and these mountains are filled with short and long-distance trails that will provide unforgettable views.

Sun, sea and staggering coastlines

With a vast 1,104 miles (1,777 km) of mainland coastline and over 1,000 islands, there’s a lot of sea views to be had. Walks along Croatia’s Adriatic coast are dramatic in the extreme, with a backdrop of huge mountains stepped against each other.

Brac, Hvar and Mljet islands all have fantastic hiking trails with breathtaking views of the mainland and surrounding islands. On Mljet island you can trek to Odysseus’ Cave where the legendary hero was supposedly shipwrecked.

The Pelješak Peninsula in the south, just above Dubrovnik, has a maze of strenuous trails through the hills and will present you with stunning views throughout the day.

Adventuring inland

Between its islands and mountainous coastline, many hikers can’t tear themselves away to look even further inland. There are plenty of phenomenal areas away from the Adriatic though so don’t discount hiking here.

Papuk Nature Park, a nature reserve in the far south east of the country, is a considerably less visited hiking region and yet utterly beautiful. The first UNESCO Geopark in Croatia, Papuk is a mountainous and heavily forested area with more hiking trails than you can shake a stick at. You’ll also find waterfalls, limestone meadows, lakes and caves here.

Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, is overlooked by an outstanding hiking area as well. The Medvednica Nature Park is immediately north of the city and you’ll walk in dense forests and enjoy exceptional views over the capital. On your hikes in this mountainous park, you can stop by the Medvedgrad medieval castle or summit Sljeme, the highest peak.

Mountain Parks of Croatia Movie

Croatia Slide Show

Rising like a rampart from the cobalt blue waters of the Adriatic Sea, Croatia’s Dinaric Alps beckon hikers to a mountain hiking experience unlike others in Europe. Within these Alps, the limestone Velebit Mountains parallel the Adriatic Coast for sixty miles making up the most beautiful portion of the Dinaric uplift. The Velebit Mountains contain Croatia’s most extensive and most spectacular mountain landscapes punctuated with impressive knobs and domes, jagged crags, labyrinthine passages, and knife-edged pinnacles. The northern portion of the Velebit is protected in the Northern Velebit National Park (Nacionalni Park Sjeverni Velebit) which is also part of a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve. Through the heart of this splendid mountain environment winds a long distance hiking trail known as the Premužić Trail (Premužićeva staza). Following the crest of the Velebit Mountains, this high level hiking path was constructed in the early 1930s to provide access to this wild and scenic mountain region. Beautiful examples of dry-stone masonry can be seen along the route. From the trail, hikers enjoy views extending over the Adriatic Sea to the west and across the parallel ridges and forested foothills that descend to Croatia’s Lika region to the east. A journey along the Premužić Trail is the signature hiking experience for mountain hikers in Croatia and forms the core of our mountain hiking trip in Croatia. To round out your experience with Croatia’s mountains you’ll also explore the trails of the Risnjak National Park, the canyons of Paklenica National Park, and the unforgettably stunning waterfalls and lakes of the Krupa Canyon and Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Here, peaks of white limestone rise suddenly and dramatically out of rolling hills deeply cloaked in beech and conifer woodlands. Today, enjoy a hike in the Risnjak National Park where trails wind through lovely forests and across meadows to the craggy limestone summit of Snježnik mountain. After the hike, travel by vehicle to the shores of the Adriatic Sea at the town of Lovran on the Opatija Riviera. Lovran’s origins date to Roman times, and in the nineteenth century the town became a fashionable resort for the Austro-Hungarian nobility. Day 3 Overnight in Senj Breakfast, lunch & dinner included Travel by vehicle from Lovran around the Gulf of Kvarner to a bridge that provides access to Krk Island, one of the three major islands in the Gulf of Kvarner. Today’s hike leads up to the long, open limestone ridge that makes up Obzova, the highest summit on the island. The stark nearly treeless landscapes of Obzova stand in marked contrast to the green woodlands of Učka mountain, but the views from Obzova are sweeping and dramatic encompassing the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea and the cloud-capped peaks of the Dinaric Alps on the Croatian mainland. After the hike, travel by vehicle to the seaside town of Senj where you’ll enjoy a two-night stay.

Day 4 Overnight in Senj Breakfast & lunch included Travel by vehicle from Senj to the Zavizan mountain refuge high in the Velebit Mountains. Near the refuge is a small botanical garden (botanički vrt) where you can observe a number of indigenous and endemic plant species before setting off on a hike along the scenic and superbly engineered Premužić Trail (Premužićeva staza). You’ll be hiking through the core of Croatia’s North Velebit National Park (Nacionalni park Sjeverni Velebit) on your way to the Alan mountain refuge where today’s hike ends. The trail winds through the limestone high country of the Velebit Mountains full of domed peaks, craggy pinnacles, and sinkholes—all characteristic features of karstic landscapes. You can choose to hike the entire route to Alan mountain refuge, or hike just a portion of the route. A vehicle transfer at the end of the hike returns you to the seaside town of Senj for the evening. Enjoy dinner on your own in Senj’s old town this evening.

Day 5 Overnight in Gospić Breakfast, lunch & dinner included Travel by vehicle from Senj to the Alan mountain refuge to continue your journey along the Premužić Trail. Head south on the trail following the ‘V” symbols that mark the route of the Premužićeva staza, part of the long-distance hiking route known as the VPP (Velebitski Planinarski Put) which traverses the entire Velebit range. As you travel southward, enjoy views of Rab and Pag Islands floating in the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea almost five thousand feet below you. On this day you can choose an “out-and-back” hike along the Premužić Trail, or if you want a longer outing, continue south a bit further before crossing the crest of the Velebit to conclude the hike in the old spruce forests of Štirovača. At the end of the hikes, travel by vehicle to the inland town of Gospić, capital of Croatia’s Lika region. Here you’ll spend the evening in a comfortable hotel in the center of town near the eighteenth century Baroque-style Cathedral of the Annunciation of Mary.

Day 6 Overnight in Starigrad-Paklenica Breakfast, lunch & dinner included This morning transfer from Gospić to the mountain settlement at Baške Oštarije where the central and southern portions of the Velebit Mountains meet. This area is dominated by a spine of rugged, white limestone peaks known as the Dabarski kukovi. These peaks stand in contrast to the often grassy summits found along the crest of the central Velebit. The fin-shaped peak of Kiza is the destination for one of the day’s hiking options. The ascent of Kiza requires a bit of scrambling and should be undertaken only by sure-footed hikers. Alternately you can choose a hike along the ridge of mountains to the west and south of Baške Oštarije passing through meadow and woodland landscapes over the summits of Debela kosa and Jelarje. After the hikes descend to the coast by vehicle and drive to the coastal town of Starigrad-Paklenica where you’ll spend the next two nights.

Day 7 Overnight in Starigrad-Paklenica Breakfast, lunch & dinner included Today’s hikes take you into the spectacular limestone Paklenica Gorge which constitutes the core of the Paklenica National Park (Nacionalni park Paklenica). As you hike up the gorge of the Velika Paklenica, the canyon walls rise abruptly on either side. You’ll pass the remains of several old water mills that are today preserved as cultural monuments by the national park authorities. The hike continues to the now largely abandoned villages of Ramići and Parići set on a wooded bench near the head of the canyon. At day’s end, return to your lodgings in Starigrad-Paklenica by vehicle.

Day 8 Overnight near Plitvice Lakes National Park Breakfast, lunch & dinner included Depart Starigrad-Paklenica this morning bound for the delightful Krupa River, a small karst river that has carved a scenic canyon at the foot of the Velebit Mountains. Today’s hike through the Krupa canyon leads you down into the canyon to Kudin most (“Kuda’s Bridge”) a narrow, twelve-arched stone footbridge. Built of travertine blocks in the early nineteenth century it picturesquely spans the cascading waters of the Krupa River. Here, beneath the canyon’s dry, rocky walls, placid pools of deep blue water invite contemplation while swirling rivulets course through banks of lush vegetation. Continue downstream along the course of the Krupa River. Fig trees and reeds line the banks of the river whose water glows in vibrant shades of blues and greens. The calls of frogs and songs of birds fill the air. This is a magical place! A shorter, less strenuous hike in the Krupa canyon will also be available this day. After the hikes, travel by vehicle to the Plitvice Lakes National Park in central Croatia where you’ll settle in for a two-night stay.

Day 9 Overnight near Plitvice Lakes National Park Breakfast, lunch & dinner included Hike through the lush, well-watered landscapes of the Plitvice Lakes National Park (Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera), a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. Plitvice Lakes National Park was established in 1949 and is the largest national park in southeastern Europe. The landscapes of the park are a spectacular melding of flowing water and karst topography. A string of sixteen lakes each separated from the next by naturally-deposited travertine “dams” line a wooded valley and waterfalls plummet from side canyons. Dense woodlands of spruce, fir and beech shelter bear, lynx and even wolves. Many endemic plant species including fifty-five species of orchids make the park a botanical delight. Enjoy a choice of hikes along trails and boardwalks that wind through this enchanting landscape! Tomorrow morning, you’ll transfer by vehicle to Zagreb (or to Zagreb Airport) where tour services conclude.

Seeing Dubrovnik

If you haven’t been to Dubrovnik before, we strongly recommend that you plan on spending at least one or two extra days in this enchanting city either before and/or after this trip. Dubrovnik’s old walled city is easy to explore on your own. The following activities are particularly recommendable: 1) completing the circular walk along the top the city’s walls; 2) visiting the island of Lokrum; 3) riding the cable car (or hiking) up to Mount Srd for panoramic views over the old city and the Adriatic Sea.

5 of the best hikes in Croatia

Jan 13, 2023 • 7 min read

Croatia is known for its gorgeous coastline strewn with islands, but the country packs a punch with its hiking opportunities too.

Set off on easy forest hikes right outside the capital or walk across rugged mountain wilderness on multiday treks. Roam through wooded national parks for close-up views of splendid waterfalls and multicolored lakes. Or, ascend colossal mountains for sublime views of the coastline.

Croatia’s diverse hiking options are the country’s best-kept secret. Here are five of the best.

A man walks along a boardwalk beside a waterway

1. Plitvice Lakes

Best hike in a national park

8km (5 miles) round trip, 4–5 hours, easy to moderate

The verdant water wonderland of  Plitvice Lakes is continental Croatia’s showcase. With its dazzling series of 16 crystalline lakes, cascading waterfalls, limestone cliffs, deep canyons and shady forests, Croatia’s oldest and largest national park is a delightful place to roam.

Though only 1% of the park’s surface consists of lakes, they steal the show. Plitvice’s lesser-known highlights are its forests of beech-fir, silver pine, spruce and hop hornbeam. You can choose between eight different hiking routes that take in the forests and the lakes; four from the northern entrance to the park (Entrance 1), which are marked in green, and four from the southern entrance (Entrance 2), marked in orange.

For a full lake and forest experience, go for Program C, a circular loop that starts from Entrance 1. Along the way, you'll take in both the lower and upper lakes and their magnificent waterfalls. The route also involves a short jaunt on an electric boat and a panoramic train ride back to the start.

Hiking tips:  It’s virtually impossible to avoid the crowds at Plitvice Lakes, a bucket-list item on most circuits of Croatia. If you start the lake tour loop first thing in the morning, you may win a chance to see the spectacular beauty before the hordes descend. The forest trails and boardwalks get slippery, so wear sturdy shoes.

2. The Premužić trail, Velebit

Croatia's best multiday hike

57km (35.5 miles), 3–4 days, moderate to difficult

The mighty Velebit mountain range is a hiker's dream: a pristine wilderness of alpine grasslands, deep canyons and old-growth forests where bears, wolves, deer and lynx roam. The Premužić trail, starting from the Zavižan mountain refuge and ending in the village of Baške Oštarije, winds its way through this stunning scenery with no big ascents or descents, all along paired with glorious coastal views.

Named after the forestry engineer and mountaineer Ante Premužić, who designed and marked this stone trail, it’s an incredible piece of craft, completed in 1933 without the use of mortar. The first 16km (10 miles) take you through  Northern Velebit National Park , with its karst terrain of round peaks and sinkholes, and run straight through Rožanski Kukovi, a landscape of white limestone cliffs, towers and domes. The trail continues on to  Velebit Nature Park , a biosphere reserve with 2000 plant species, including some rare ones such as the window bellflower and Croatian grassy bells.

You can’t camp in the wild on Velebit, but there are several mountain huts and shelters along the way. Some are staffed, quite comfy and serve meals (like Alan and Zavižan), while others are unstaffed (Skorpovac). If you want a more comfortable option, book ahead; Velebit gets quite busy with hikers.

For a full-on multiday adventure along this Croatian section of the Via Dinarica mega trail, you can continue on from Baške Oštarije to Starigrad Paklenica on the Adriatic state road and complete the entire Velebit hiking trail (circa 100km or 62 miles, nine days total). Another option is to sign up for  Highlander , a long-distance group trek across Velebit in five days, through Northern Velebit and  Paklenica national parks.

Scenic View Of Sea Against Clear Blue Sky

3. Vidova Gora, Brač

Best island hike

10.6km (6.6 miles) round trip, 3–5 hours, moderate

The Golden Cape ( Zlatni Rat ) beach on  Brač island is Croatia’s most photographed. It's an exquisite natural wonder of fine pebbles that spit out into the Adriatic in a triangular shape. Seeing this stunner from the highest point on all of Croatia’s Adriatic islands,  Vidova Gora (at 778m/2552ft), is worth every hot minute of the trek.

The trail up to the top starts in Bol , the charming seaside town on the island’s southern coast. Start your way up along a road that leads to the quarry above town. (Brač is known for its white limestone, which has been used to build many illustrious edifices around the world, including parts of the White House in Washington, D.C.) The road gradually turns into a marked rocky trail through karst terrain and patches of pine forest, with a slow and steady incline and some switchbacks as you approach the ridge at the top.

The payoff for the ascent is the panorama from Vidova Gora. And it’s a treat: you’ll see Zlatni Rat protruding out into the sea below, as well as the island of Hvar and the Biokovo mountain on the mainland. Once you’ve descended back to Bol, a dip in the crystal-clear Adriatic is a fitting finale. To avoid the harsh midday sun, consider hiking either early in the morning or late afternoon.

4. Mount Srđ, Dubrovnik

Best hike for spectacular city views

4.7km (2.9 miles), 1 hour, easy

You can’t beat the picture-postcard view of  Dubrovnik’s walled old town from the top of  Mount Srđ (pronounced "surge"), which rises sharply from the coast at 412m (1352ft). While you can hop on the cable car and get whisked up within seconds, hiking to Srđ adds a whole new dimension to the experience, as you work for the view.

To give the hike that extra oomph, head out in the late afternoon or early evening so you can catch the sunset from the top. The light makes the view astonishing: golden hues bathe the terracotta rooftops of the old town while the sun drops down into the sea far out on the horizon.

You can kick off from Dubrovnik’s old town, which adds about 30 minutes to the hike; otherwise, take Bus 17 from the Pile stop to the trailhead (get off at Bosanka). The trail is well-marked, starting as a dirt track through shady pine forests and then turning into a switchback route up the mountain, on rocky terrain. Along the way, check out the brass relief artwork placed at the hairpins, representing the 14 Stations of the Cross; this is a popular pilgrimage on Easter.

Hiking tips:  As you zigzag up the hill, all the way admiring the vistas, look out for tricky loose stones. If you do go for sunset, bring a head torch or a flashlight for the hike back down. Otherwise, get a one-way ticket and ride the cable car back down.

The Medvedgrad castle seen from the top of Medvdnica mountain

5. Medvednica mountain, Zagreb

3.4km (2.1 miles), 2–3 hours round trip, easy

Looming over Zagreb from the north like a verdant frame, Medvednica mountain is the locals’ beloved escape from the hubbub of Croatia’s capital. Its highest peak is Sljeme, at 1035m (3396ft) above sea level, affording wow views of the city below. The entire western part of Medvednica is protected as a nature park, covering nearly 180 sq km (69 sq miles) of dense forests, home to Pannonian beech, silver fir and sessile oak, and 1205 plant species. Bears once rambled through these woods, which is how the mountain got its name ("medvedi" is Croatian for "bears"); today you’ll find wild cats and boar, 70 species of nesting birds and 24 bat species.

Medvednica Nature Park has 70 mountain trails, for all levels of fitness and hiking styles. The Miroslavec educational trail, also known as Trail 13, is among the best easy hikes in the area. It was built in the late 19th century by a count named Miroslav for his wife who loved to wander these woods.

The trail starts from Šestinski Lagvić restaurant in the neighborhood of Šestine, winding its way up along the Kraljevec stream all the way to the Queen’s Well. Along the way, check out the informative displays that explain the area’s unique geology, such as green rocks and clay schist. Medvednica is teeming with hikers on weekends; weekdays tend to be blissfully empty.

The 8 Best Hikes in Croatia: Hiking Trails You Should Not Miss

The 8 Best Hikes in Croatia: Hiking Trails You Should Not Miss

With over 6,000 kilometers (approximately 3,728 miles) of marked hiking trails in Croatia, this country is quickly becoming one of the most popular mountaineering destinations in Europe. Croatian themselves are avid hikers and are among the first seven nations in the world with a climbing and mountaineering organization.

The mountains reflect the incredible diversity of Croatia’s landscape. Those that lie in the Croatian lowlands are typically covered with thick woods, while the highland mountains are rocky and bare.

Croatian mountains are not particularly high – the highest peak is Sinjal on the Dinara Mountain and it stands at only 1,831 meters. This makes Croatia the ideal hiking destination because you can reach most peaks in a day’s hike.

Combine that with the incredible scenery and beautiful viewpoints and you’ll understand why many decide to spend their Croatia holiday hiking and exploring the mountains.

As a passionate hiker, I’ve been to many Croatian hiking trails, but to ensure this post covers the best among them, I’ve enlisted professional help.

So I’d like to thank the hikers and climbers of the Croatian Mountaineering Society “Sisak” for providing me with helpful climbing guidebooks and numerous Croatia hiking and climbing tips!

Things to Remember and Pack before You Go Hiking in Croatia

hiking trips croatia

Choosing the best hiking trails in Croatia is a challenging task. There are over 1,100 trails to choose from and each one has unique natural or historical landmarks. Considering that most people visit Croatia to relax and have fun, I’ve opted for listing the most attractive hikes in Croatia that are also among the easiest and are not too hard to reach.

For getting to these trails, I strongly recommend you rent a car. You can get near some of them with public transport, but train and bus stops are located quite far from the trails.

We’ve rented cars dozens of times in the Balkans through various search engines and have settled on Discover Cars as the best car rental search engine – it searches over 500 trusted rental companies to find the cheapest price for your rental! Compare prices for car rental in Croatia here.

In this post, the amount of hiking required on each trail is about 2 – 3 hours each way. The only exception is the Premužić trail on Velebit, which can take longer if you want.

Try to remember that the days are much shorter in winter, so if you decide to go on a hike and marvel at the snow-covered mountains, start early. That way, you’ll have enough time to climb down before dark (and bring a headlamp for safety!).

The Croatia hiking trails listed in this post are mountain trails, so it’s important to remember that you’ll be venturing into the wilderness. That means that you’ll have to be careful of certain things and pack accordingly.

Here are the do’s and don’ts and what you need to know to have a great and safe time hiking in Croatia!

Never Go Hiking Alone

hiking trips croatia

Unless you are a highly experienced hiker or climber, you should always bring company to your hiking trips. Accidents happen, and you don’t want to end up being trapped on the mountain without anyone to help you.

In case you need help, The Croatian Mountain Rescue Service is available 24 hours a day, and you can reach them by calling the number 112.

Pack the Hiking Essentials

hiking trips croatia

Every year there are at least a couple of rescue missions of tourists that have wandered on the mountain in their flip-flops, carrying just a small bottle of water. Do your research before you go on a hike, so you know what to expect.

This is a great mountaineering map of Croatia, where you can check out the locations of trails and mountain lodges, along with the forecast and useful websites for hikers.

Every hiker will tell you that the appropriate shoes or boots are the most important thing to have when you go hiking. They should be firm, but comfortable. Opt for mid-to-high-cut models, because they hold your ankles and prevent dislocation. I recommend this pair for women and this pair for men. Trekking poles are also helpful for keeping proper footing.

Be sure to dress properly in lots of layers, as weather conditions can change frequently. Here are some ideas on hiking clothes for women if you’re new to hiking.

Be sure to bring enough food and water on your hike. You’ll need nutrition after all that walking and fresh air, but it’s good to have some extra provisions in case of an accident.

Always bring a warm hat and gloves, no matter the season. In some Croatian mountains, especially Velebit, the weather can change from hot to freezing cold in a matter of minutes, even in the middle of summer.

Also, pack a raincoat or wear a rainproof jacket (we love this women’s jacket and this one for men).

Never Go Off the Trail

hiking trips croatia

Croatian hiking trails are marked with a red and white circle. They can be found on trees and rocks along the trail. Sometimes, when there is not enough surface to paint a circle, a trail is marked by three parallel lines. Always look out for those, follow them, and don’t go on unmarked trails.

The marks painted in blue and white signal caves and caverns. The crossroads are marked with an X, and the trails are generally well equipped with signposts.

Beware of the Wildlife

hiking trips croatia

As I said before, you will be going into the wilderness, so there’s always a chance, albeit a small one, that you’ll have an encounter with certain animals.

The karst mountains, like Velebit or Dinara, are home to bears, wolfs and lynxes. Wolves can also be encountered in the lowlands region of Croatia.

Bear mothers with cubs are especially dangerous, so if you do see one of those, don’t try to approach it or touch it. In case of any encounter, try to remain calm, don’t run, and don’t make hasty movements.

When you hike in Croatia, always speak in loud voices because that will warn the animals you’re there and they’ll run away. Remember that the animals will not attack you unless provoked.

The most poisonous snake in Europe can be found in the Croatian mountains. The horned viper comes out in early spring and often sunbathes on rocks and trails. Again, it will not attack you unless it feels endangered. The vibrations you make when you walk will usually warn them you’re coming and they’ll go away.

However, be extra careful when you’re climbing the rocks, and don’t put your hands in bushes, holes, or dents. In summer, be sure to occasionally look up and check out the trees.

The snakes climb the trees in search of bird’s nests and they mate on the branches. Also, avoid walking through tall grass if you don’t have high-cut boots.

Remember that this is all just a precaution – sightings of these animals are extremely rare. They avoid hiking trails that people often use, and the majority of hikers in Croatia never encounter them.

Respect the Nature

hiking trips croatia

It goes without saying, but I’m going to say it anyway – do not litter! Bring an extra waste bag and throw it in the dumpster once you get off the mountain. If you’re a smoker, bring a portable ashtray. More than one devastating fire has started because of cigarette stubs.

Remember that some of these Croatian hiking trails are a part of a national park, so picking flowers is strictly forbidden. Some of the plants you’ll see are endemic and protected, and it’s up to responsible hikers to keep it that way.

Now that you’re ready and packed, here are the best hikes in Croatia!

The leustik trail on the medvednica mountain.

hiking trips croatia

This is an ideal way to spend a day in nature if you’re visiting Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. Medvednica towers over the city with its highest peak – Sljeme. There are over 70 hiking trails you can take and a dozen mountain lodges.

>> Read Next: 28 Wonderful Things to Do in Zagreb in Winter <<

But the most popular trail is the Leustik trail, named after a forest ranger that first marked it. The trail leads you to Sljeme, and you’ll be able to experience the amazing view of the whole region.

To get to the trail, you need to take a tram or a bus from Zagreb and exit in Gračani. From there, the signposts will lead you to the start of the trail.

The hike is a relatively easy one. You’ll be gradually climbing the whole time, but there are more than enough stops to rest. One of them is Adolfovac, a popular wooden pavilion.

The trail is well marked, so you won’t get lost on its many crossroads. Just follow the signs, and you’ll get to the peak. There are a few restaurants along the way, where you can relax, try out the local cuisine, and have a cup of coffee.

This is a great summer option because the trees shadow the whole trail, so you won’t stand in direct sun. That’s why this is a popular destination for those who want to hike in Croatia with children and pets.

The West Medvednica Trail

hiking trips croatia

The terrain of the western part of Medvednica is mostly made up of karst, with a few caves and caverns. Here, you can visit the Veternica cave, one of the biggest in Croatia.

To get to the trail, take a tram or a bus from the city and exit in Gornji Stenjevec. From there, the marked trail will take you to the cave.

Veternica is popular and most known for its huge bat population. But it’s also a place where the prehistoric Neanderthals dwelled, as confirmed by archaeological findings. You’ll also be able to see many beautiful fossils.

hiking trips croatia

You can go on a guided tour of the cave every weekend and holiday, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The tickets cost 40 kunas ($6) for adults and 20 kunas ($3) for children.

Bring a warm jacket, since the air is much colder there. If you’re claustrophobic, you might want to skip it altogether cause you’ll be going pretty deep into the cave.

From there, you’ll walk to the mountain lodge on Glavica where you can rest and dine. If you continue your hike, you’ll arrive at Ponikve, a beautiful grass valley with several little creeks.

From Ponikve, you can take a trail to Sljeme, or continue straight to discover the impressive dolomite rocks called Kamenisvati. In Croatian, “svati” means wedding guests, and the name is connected to the legend of how the rocks came to existence – an unsatisfied mother of a groom cast a spell on the wedding guests so they all turned to stone.

Here, you can also find a small mountain house, which serves drinks on the weekends. Again, the whole trail is well marked and full of signposts so there’s no chance you’ll get lost.

The Japetić Trail

hiking trips croatia

If you drive just 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Zagreb, you can visit a charming little town called Samobor. Known for its delicious custard pastries called kremšnita , it lies beneath the Samobor mountain range. The most popular trail is the one that leads to its peak, Japetić. It’s very well-marked and easily accessible.

To get to the hiking trail, start from Samobor. Follow the signposts for Japetić. You’ll have to drive for about 10 kilometers (6 miles) on a very narrow, winding road. You’ll pass the village Smerovišće and get to the Šoić House, which, by the way, serves amazing food. Park here and you can start hiking!

Two trails lead to Japetić from here. One goes over the mountains pass Velika Vrata, and it is a shorter but a little harder trail. It’s much steeper than the other one, so if you want an easier hike, I’d recommend you take the second trail. You’ll be passing through the woods and beautiful green meadows.

The trail is well marked, so just follow the signs for Japetić. At the top, you can climb a huge lookout and take in the wonderful, scenic views of the mountain. Continue further if you want to get to the Žitnica mountain lodge where you can try out their tasty food or just rest a bit.

To get back down, you can take the same trail, or use the one over Velikavrata.

The Ravna Gora Trail

hiking trips croatia

Ravna Gora is the northernmost Croatian mountain. It’s entirely covered with forests and the trails are well marked.

The trail starts next to the castle Trakošćan. It’s easy to reach from Zagreb; just follow the road signals in your rental car. You can park next to the Trakošćan hotel. The castle was built in the 14 th century and is now a museum. You can visit it before or after the hike.

The museum is open every day, and the working hours are 9 AM to 8 PM from April to October, and 9 AM to 5 PM from November to the end of March. The tickets cost 40 kunas ($6) for adults, and 20 kunas ($3) for students and children up to 18 years of age. Children under 7 years old have free entry.

From the castle, follow the road to the hotel and then turn right on the trail. You’ll be walking for about 50 minutes through the woods until you reach the little village Vrbanići. From there, walk another 10 minutes and you’ll get to the crossroads – turn left and follow the trail through the vineyards and small cottages.

Here, you’ll find another crossroads. You can go left to reach the Velikapećina cave or right to get to the Pusti Duhmountain lodge.

If you opt for the cave, you should know that the tour is quite challenging – you have to use cables and cords to navigate the cave, so if you’re not in good shape, it’s better to skip it.

Once you reach the lodge, where you can rest, you can continue to follow the trail to the top of the mountain. There’s a small, picturesque church near the top, and a huge iron pyramid you can climb to take in the beautiful view of the surroundings and see why this is one of the best hikes in Croatia!

You can turn back here, or continue following the markings to another lodge from which you can take a second trail to go back to Trakošćan. That would take you another hour or two if you rest often.

The lodges here serve drinks, so make sure you bring enough food.

The Klek Trail

hiking trips croatia

From the northern part of Croatia, we travel south to a region called Gorski Kotar. It’s a mountainous, forested area, popularly known as “the lungs of Croatia”. The hiking trails here are some of the most popular in Croatia. Forests and karstic rocks blend here into breathtaking views.

The Klek Mountain lies above the small town of Ogulin. It’s a place of many old legends and myths. According to one, the mountain is a petrified giant. And when you look at it from afar, the outline of the mountain looks like a sleeping giant, with his feet up in the air.

Some say that witches and fairies assemble on Klek on stormy nights, and their cries and screams terrorize the people in Ogulin.

This Croatia hiking trail is a little harder than those on Medvednica, but it’s not overly challenging. It’s quite steep in some parts, so it will take you longer to get to the top.

That’s why I recommend you start early in the morning, especially if you decide to hike during winter. You’ll need to have enough time to get down from the mountain before dark.

hiking trips croatia

The trail starts at the end of the small village of Bjelsko. From Ogulin, you’ll have to drive on the so-called Rudolf’s road for about 10 minutes to get there.

There are signposts everywhere, so just follow those that say “Klek” or “Bjelsko”. When you get to the village, park your car next to the Scout Society House.

From there, simply follow the markings on the trail to the mountain lodge. It should take you about an hour or more if you rest frequently.

From the lodge, you can take a trail to get to the top of the mountain. It should take about 30-45 minutes, and you’ll have to climb the rocks for the portion of it. It’s not hard, but if you don’t like climbing, just rest in the lodge. However, the view from the top will make up for all the sweating and climbing.

If you’re feeling adventurous and are in good physical shape, you can take the Klečice trail from the lodge. You’ll have to do some serious rock climbing, so be careful and don’t take it if you’re not an experienced climber.

In any case, you’ll be amazed by the beautiful nature and breathtaking views from the top. Klek is one of my favorite hikes in Croatia, so I highly recommend you take this trail.

The Risnjak Trail

hiking trips croatia

Risnjak is one of Croatia’s national parks and one of the highest peaks of Gorski Kotar. This is the only national park in Croatia that you can visit only on foot. Its natural characteristics are its beautiful woods and endemic plants, such as edelweiss ( Leontopodiumnivale ).

Remember that this mountain flower is protected and picking it is strictly forbidden. Risnjak is one of those places where you should look out for wild animals – there have been some reports of hikers stumbling on bears or lynxes.

You can get to Risnjak by taking a bus from Zagreb to Rijeka, but you’ll have to walk A LOT to get to the trail from the main road.

That’s why I recommend you drive to the village of Gornje Jelenje. From there, you can either walk or drive to Vilje, a small woodland glade. This is the start of the trail that leads to the peak.

hiking trips croatia

This hiking trail is quite easy and well-marked. After 15 minutes, you’ll arrive at Medvjeđavrata (The Bear’s Doors), a formation of rocks where hikers usually rest a bit.

The next leg of a trail goes through a karstic area and a small woodland zone. Again, it’s not challenging and you’ll arrive quickly at a small clearing on the ridge of the mountain.

Here you visit the mountain lodge Schlosserov Dom (Schlosser’s Home), named after the botanist and the first president of the Croatian Mountaineering Society, Dr. Josip Schlosser. You can have a bite to eat at the lodge (the meals are simple, but yummy) and buy a map of the national park.

You’ll also have to buy a ticket for the park here. Adults will pay 45 kuna ($7) and students, children, and retirees 25 kunas ($4). All children under the age of 7 have free entry.

From the lodge, you can take a trail to the top. It will only take 10-15 minutes, and you’ll have to climb over the rocks for a bit, but the view from the top is worth it. You can see almost the entire Gorski Kotar and parts of the Snježnik and Učka mountains.

The Premužić Trail on North Velebit

hiking trips croatia

It’s hard to choose the most beautiful hike in Croatia, but if I had to, it would be Velebit. It’s diverse, wild, unpredictable, and breathtakingly beautiful.

It’s the longest Croatian mountain with two national parks (North Velebit and Paklenica), two nature reserves (Hajdučki and RožanskiKukovi), and many natural, cultural, and historical areas protected by Croatian laws.

There are many trails on Velebit, each one more beautiful than the last. I couldn’t possibly cover them all in this post, so I’ll list some personal favorites.

Because North Velebit is one of Croatia’s national parks , you’re going to have to buy a ticket. It costs 45 kunas ($7) for adults, and 30 ($4.5) kuna for children aged 6-14, retirees, and students.

Once you get to the charming village of Oltari, take a road to the village Krasno. I highly recommend you visit a small family cheese shop here. They offer a variety of cow’s, sheep’s, and goat’s milk cheeses, and they’re all delicious.

hiking trips croatia

There’s also a museum in Krasno called Kuća Velebita (Velebit’s House) and it’s one of the most attractive museums in Croatia. It’s highly interactive, with 4D projections, a lift that takes you in a cave, 3D maps, and even a wind simulator.

I dare you to try out the bora wind – it will knock you off your feet! Check out the price list here .

From Krasno, follow the signposts to Babić Siče, the park’s entrance (you’ll buy the tickets here). You’ll have to drive another few kilometers to get to the Zavižan on the gravel road.

Zavižan mountain lodge is the starting point for many trails on Velebit, including the Premužić trail. This trail is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, and I couldn’t agree more. It’s over 50 kilometers long, but there are a couple of stops along the way at which you can rest, and turn back.

The trail is named after Ante Premužić, an engineer who built the trail with his team in just four years. They built it without machines, concrete, or any modern technologies. All they used were their hands and pikes. Imagine clearing the 37 miles of karstic path on a rocky mountain with nothing but your hands! Thanks to these enthusiasts, we now have access to some of the wildest and most beautiful parts of the mountain.

To get to the trail, walk from Zavižan lodge to the road beneath it. There, you can check out the Velebit Botanic Garden (it would take you about an hour of walking) or go straight to get to the trail. There are many signposts, so you won’t get lost.

hiking trips croatia

The first part of the trail takes you through the woods and beautiful meadows. As you go further, the surroundings change to a rocky, karstic one.

The trail is quite easy – there are just a couple of short slopes and the rest is a straight, flat path. Many take their kids and pets with them. However, I would recommend you don’t bring your dog with you – some parts of the trail are very rocky and they could hurt their paws.

People usually hike to a small stone lodge called Rossijeva Koliba (The Rossi’s Hut) and then turn back. I would recommend you do the same unless you want to hike for another couple of hours.

Sometimes, people arrange that a ranger waits for them at the end of the North Velebit Premužić trail, which is the mountain lodge at Alan and drives them back to Zavižan. In any case, you’ll be walking for 6-7 hours total, so bring enough food and water.

The trail continues to the Middle Velebit, and can’t be hiked in one day. So the best option is to go to Rossi’s Hut and turn back or continue to the lodge on Alan.

If you decide to continue further to Alan, you’re in for a treat. You’ll be passing through Rožanski and Hajdučkikukovi, a unique formation of rocks and one of the most impressive karstic areas in Croatia.

Most of it is still unexplored because the rocks form an impenetrable barrier, so you come to appreciate the efforts of Premužić and his team even more. From there, the trail leads through the woods and soon you’ll reach the lodge on Alan.

If you want to arrange for transport from Alan to Zavižan, here’s the contact info of the parks officials.

The Paklenica Trail on South Velebit

hiking trips croatia

The Big and Small Paklenica is, along with North Velebit, the most popular destination for hikers and climbers. This southern part of the mountain is even more karstic than its northern part, but it also contains many beautiful forests and clearing.

Again, Paklenica is a national park, so you’ll have to pay for the tickets. The entrance is right next to the main state road D8. Follow the signs and turn when you pass the small St. Peter’s Church.

You’ll drive for a couple of minutes through the village of Marasovići and you’ll get straight to the reception. You can check out the alternative roads and detailed instructions on how to get to Paklenica here .

The prices vary depending on the season. The tickets for adults cost between 20 – 60 kuna ($3 – $9 USD), and 10 – 30 kuna ($1.50 – $4.50 USD) for children aged 5-14. Check out the detailed price list here .

Paklenica has many trails, and most of them can be challenging for beginners. That’s why I recommend you take the trail to the Paklenica mountain lodge and then go back.

hiking trips croatia

The trail starts at the reception and goes through the impressive canyon, considered by many to be the most beautiful part of the park. It’s a narrow road, encircled by enormous rocks.

You’ll soon arrive at the Anića Kuk, the biggest rock on Velebit and probably the most famous one in Croatia. You can climb on the rock and it would take you about 1.5 hours.

The road then takes you through a beautiful pasture field and to the entrance of the Manitapeć cave. You can visit it from April to October, and it will cost you 30 kuna ($4.50) for adults and 15 kunas ($2.50) for children.

The entrance to the cave is locked, so you’ll have to announce you want to visit it when you buy the tickets for the park. The park officials will then send someone to meet you at the cave.

From the cave, it will take you about 1.5 hours through the forested canyon to reach the mountain lodge. They don’t serve food, only drinks, so make sure you bring enough provisions.

***********

These hiking trails are just a fraction of what Croatian mountains have to offer. As I said before, it’s impossible to pick the best hikes in Croatia objectively, but those listed here are considered the most attractive because of their uniqueness and beautiful, wild nature.

If you’re not sure about hiking alone or if you’re a beginner, then you can always opt for an organized hiking adventure like this one , which takes you hiking to the top of Srdj Mountain in Dubrovnik. It’s  probably less challenging, but also much easier!

I hope this list motivates you to spend a day in the fresh air, walk through the wilderness, and marvel at the natural beauty of hiking in Croatia.

So be safe, respect nature, and enjoy yourself!

What to Pack for a Croatia Hiking Trip

hiking trips croatia

If you’re going for a hike in Croatia, be sure to pack these things for a fantastic day out.

Mosquito repellent:  You can bring ones  with DEET  or  without DEET , or I love having some of these  mosquito repellent wipes  that I can keep in my bag in case I suddenly start to get swarmed and don’t have my regular repellent with me.

Sunscreen:  You can buy sunscreen in Croatia, but it’s likely cheaper at home or bought  online  in advance. I love this  solid Neutrogena sunscreen . Who doesn’t love a good solid for liquid swap? Great to keep in your bag without worrying about sunscreen explosions

A rain jacket:  There can be some surprising weather sometimes even in the summer in Croatia, so bring a jacket that can handle rain and a bit of wind – especially in the mountains. We like this Columbia rain jacket for men  and this  Marmot Precip jacket for women . For colder weather, an ultra-light down jacket rolls up and packs easily in your day bag so it’s good to bring along – I have one similar to this .

Comfortable walking shoes:  You’ll want to wear at the very least good sneakers for your trip to Plitvice Lakes, and you may be more comfortable with hiking shoes if you’re planning to do several hikes in Croatia on your trip. I recommend these  Ahnu hiking boots for women and these  Keen boots  for men.

Trekking poles : If you want to keep your footing during trickier paths, a set of trekking poles are great — we recommend these easy folding ones .

Snacks and plenty of water for your day out: We recommend bringing water with a filtration system like this GRAYL water bottle so you can refill your water bottle from streams, lakes, and rivers in the mountains! Here are some great easy to pack travel snacks.

It’s positioned on an oval-shaped swelling of land pointing deep into Pelješac Channel. It was ingeniously designed with grooved narrow streets that branch off from the main street, resembling a fishbone that reduced the impact of the wind and sun, providing shelter for its inhabitants.

  • Ascent: 330m
  • Hiking Time: Between 3 and 5 hours

Loved this trip! The pace was perfect—around five hours of hiking each day, late lunch, several hours for rest, relaxation, exploration of the towns we were in, followed by evening dinner. We all agreed that this trip should be advertised as a culinary expedition: the variety and quality of meals was amazing!
I’m so glad that I chose the Croatia trip. The itinerary was beautiful and provided a mix of hiking, history, culture, and even boating! Both of the trip leaders are top notch. Bravo, Wilderness Travel!

Day 1: Arrival Day 2: Risnjak National Park hiking Day 3: Northern Velebit National Park hiking Day 4: Plitvice Lakes National Park walking Day 5: Velebit Nature Park – Krupa River hiking. Zadar visit. Day 6: Paklenica National Park hiking Day 7: Krka River National Park walking. Sibenik visit. Day 8: Departure

Detailed itinerary – walking & hiking croatia national parks, day 1: arrival day.

Our first encounter for Croatia National Park Hiking Tour will be in Zagreb or Rijeka. You will be picked up at the airport, bus/train station or your hotel and head to Gorski Kotar.

Gorski Kotar is the mountain region popularly known as the „Green Lungs of Croatia“ because of its magical dense forests and fresh air. The charm of this area also lies in the fact that it’s not very touristy. It’s a real jewel still waiting to be discovered, ideal for a peaceful and rejuvenating vacation.

We will all get together for a welcome dinner, meet our fellow travelers and learn more about the adventures that are waiting for us this week.

Night: 3* guesthouse in Gorski Kotar

Driving: 1h-1h45, depending on the airport, day 2: risnjak national park hiking.

This first morning we wake up near the entrance to Risnjak, the National Park that was named after its most popular inhabitant – the lynx or “ris” in Croatian. It encompasses Risnjak and Snjeznik mountain ranges and the source area of the River Kupa. The Park is equally attractive in all seasons: in winter, when covered with snow; in spring, when its meadows transform into carpets of flowers; in summer, when it offers relief from the heat, and in autumn, when the trees bathe in a myriad of colors.

Our goal will be Big Risnjak (1528 m), its highest peak, and we will have time for a deserved break in the hut just below it. Weather permitting, we will be able to admire the views of the Adriatic Sea, neighboring Slovenia and even the Alps. An alternative is a gentler hike in the Kupa River Valley, often described as the magnificent valley of butterflies.

Driving: up to 25 min each way ; Hiking: 5-6 hours for the Big Risnjak hike

Day 3: northern velebit national park hiking.

While we like to say that we will conquer a mountain, Velebit is a kind of a mountain that conquers its visitors. Northern Velebit, the youngest Croatian national park, is just one small part of this magnificent mountain and recognized for its preserved biodiversity, richness of the natural phenomena and pristine wilderness.

We will hike along one part of the famous Premuzic Trail which was built at the beginning of the 20th century and named after its constructor. It runs along the mountain ridge through the most beautiful and inaccessible parts of the mountain with the Adriatic Sea and islands stretching on one side and the continental Croatia on the other. Since the trail was engineered to provide gentle hiking without any steep ascents or descents, we will have an easy and pleasant day enjoying beautiful nature.

After the trip we will head to Plitvice Lakes National Park surroundings where we will enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Croatian countryside.

Night: 3* guesthouse in Plitvice National Park area

Driving: 2h+2h30 ; hiking: 3-4 hours, day 4: plitvice lakes national park walking.

This morning we don’t have to go too far, we are just a short drive away from the oldest Croatia national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sequence of 16 turquoise lakes linked together with beautiful waterfalls and travertine pools are really as beautiful as in the photos, even more. The lakes are surrounded by beech and pine forests and are home to extensive wildlife .

We will walk by the lakes, past the waterfalls and the trails will occasionally lead us up to amazing viewpoints where you will be able to admire the complete picture of this amazing natural attraction.

Driving: 15 min; Walking: 5-6 hours

Day 5: velebit nature park – krupa & zrmanja rivers hiking. zadar..

Today we head south to explore the gorgeous canyons of Krupa & Zrmanja rivers which are a part of Velebit Nature Park. It’s a real western movie setting and a perfect destination for all trekking lovers.

Our hike starts in Golubici, a small village with a mere population of thirty. From there we head towards Kuda’s Bridge over the Krupa River. There is an intriguing and romantic legend about that bridge. After we tell you the story we will continue to the big 13 m waterfall on the Zrmanja River and back to Golubici.

We stay overnight in a little coastal town enjoying the special energy that the fusion between the mountain and the sea creates. If you want, you can spend a free evening in Zadar, an old city on the coast with interesting Roman and Venetian ruins, medieval churches, cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants.

Night: 3* guesthouse in Starigrad or surroundings

Driving: 2 hours; hiking: 5 hours, day 6: paklenica national park hiking.

Paklenica National Park encompasses the small and the big Paklenica canyons and their surrounding area. We will hike along the big one (Velika Paklenica) and make our way to one of the nicest huts in the canyon.

Apart from being a paradise for hikers, Paklenica is a worldwide known climbing destination due to its amazing rock formations. If you prefer, you can also decide to rock climb instead of hike (optional).

After the hike we move south to the small charming town of Skradin situated at the doorstep of the Krka River National Park. Skradin is situated on Prokljan, a lake with brackish water formed by the Krka River before reaching the sea. You are welcome to take a swim on the local beach, hike up to the 14th century fortress and check out the town’s marina, some nice local shops, bars and restaurants.

Night: 3* hotel in Skradin

Driving: 1 hour; hiking: 4 hours, day 7: krka river national park walking. sibenik..

With its seven travertine waterfalls and total drop of 242 m, the Krka River is one of the most beautiful natural and karst phenomena in Croatia. The main attractions are the big Skradinski Buk waterfall, the small island of Visovac with a Franciscan monastery and the Roski waterfall. We will explore the area walking by the refreshing waterfalls and maybe even take a swim in the river if you feel like it.

Since Sibenik town is very close, we will use the opportunity to make a short afternoon visit to walk along the town’s narrow streets, admiring the old stone houses and the famous St Jacob’s Cathedral.

And before you know it, our Croatia National Park Hiking Tour has come to an end. To celebrate our amazing adventure we will have a final dinner together and exchange experiences before saying goodbye to each other.

Driving: 20 min one way to Sibenik; Walking: 2-3 hours (Krka NP)

Day 8: departure.

Today is the last day of our Walking & Hiking Croatia National Parks tour and we transfer you to the airport, bus station or your next hotel. C losest airports are Zadar and Split.

If you wish to spend more time in Croatia feel free to contact us for recommendations. We can organize an extension that can include Mt Dinara (the highest peak of Croatia), Mt Biokovo Nature Park, walking & island hopping, Dubrovnik or any other location in Croatia.

The itinerary of this Walking & Hiking Croatia National Parks tour is subject to change without prior notice. Our primary concern is the safety and comfort of our guests. Every reasonable effort will be made to operate the program as planned, but alterations may still occur due to weather conditions, water levels, group preferences and abilities and other exceptional situations.

It is what the name suggests, there is no guide that is breathing down your neck. As provided by us, it is a unique and  flexible vacation option  that allows you to explore the picturesque landscapes of Croatia at your own pace.

We take care of all the logistical details for you — we  book your accommodations , supply a comprehensive  itinerary with descriptions of routes , highlights along the way, and any other vital information you might need for your adventure. This setup allows you to enjoy the beauty and culture of Croatia while maintaining a certain degree of  freedom and flexibility  in your schedule, making for a truly personalised travel experience.

Ideal times to embark on a walking holiday along the Croatian coast and islands are the shoulder months of May, June, September, and October . During these periods, the climate is optimal for hiking and exploring stunning coastal landscapes. If you’re a fan of swimming, the summer months provide warmer sea temperatures for a refreshing dip. However, the higher temperatures during these months can make walking more strenuous.

Absolutely, we understand that everyone has unique dietary needs and we aim to cater for them. Most places we visit can accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions. However, it is crucial that you inform us of any food restrictions or allergies in advance so we can ensure your needs are met throughout your holiday.

Many of our holidays are suitable for children. However, certain more challenging trips, such as those involving mountain hiking, may require children to be physically prepared and sure-footed. For the safety and enjoyment of younger participants, we recommend they be at least eight years old to join the tours.

Our walking holidays are crafted to accommodate a wide range of fitness levels. We offer flexibility to adjust the tours as needed. While you do not necessarily need prior hiking experience, it’s beneficial to be sure-footed and equipped with sturdy hiking shoes. The only exception is our Hut to Hut hiking holiday, which is more demanding but fully guided, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

We arrange for our guests to stay in a mix of hotels and private accommodations, depending on the specific holiday and the region of Croatia being explored.

Yes, we strongly recommend booking in advance. Early booking not only secures your spot but also provides you with a wider range of options. Please note that if you book just prior to or during the season, we may not be able to guarantee availability in certain hotels and apartments.

Croatia is well-connected by air, with international airports in major cities like Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, and Pula. Alternatively, you can also reach Croatia by train or bus from various European cities, or by car if you’re touring from a neighbouring country. If you’re travelling from a further distance, connecting flights via major European airports are usually available.

Frequently asked questions about our walking tours in croatia.

Bringing the right gear is essential to having a safe and comfortable time hiking in Croatia. Here's a general list of what you should pack for your hiking tour:

Boasting a warm Mediterranean climate, Croatia can be a year-round destination for hiking. But each season has different benefits. In the balmy summer months, the sun-drenched islands, beaches, and bays along the Dalmatian Coast beckon for island-hopping hikes and traversing coastal trails. However, as it is the summer high season, popular trails and tourist attractions will be more crowded. Soaring temperatures and long, hot days are another factor to consider about summertime hiking.

In general, the best time to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking in Croatia is during spring and fall. Not only will trails and major cities be quieter and less crowded, but temperatures will also be more pleasant. But be prepared for occasional short bursts of rain during these times.

You can even go hiking in Croatia in wintertime. During the winter months, the northern parts of the country can get colder, with snow falling at higher elevations, but the coastline remains pleasant.

Our walking trips to Croatia are graded easy-moderate or moderate. Our Walking Montenegro and the Croatian Islands trip is easy-going with 2.5 to 5 hours of walking each day on well-defined paths and at low altitudes. Our Walks and Coastal Towns of Croatia tour is a bit more challenging with about five hours of walking each day, so a good level of fitness is required. There may also be some rocky ascents and descents to negotiate.

As most day hikes on our Croatia hiking tours range from early to moderate difficulty, you don't need to train to prepare for your trip. As long as you are in good physical health and exercise regularly, you should have the physical fitness and stamina for most hikes. If you want to prepare for your trip, going on short day hikes for a few months before your trip will help boost your stamina.

In between day hikes and walks around Croatia, you'll spend most nights in small, independent, and family-run hotels. Offering a warm welcome with great service and comfortable accommodations, these simple but pleasant guest houses are a great way to experience a family atmosphere and learn more about the local culture.

All of our small group walking tours to Croatia are ideal for, and popular with, solo travelers. Walk with like-minded people as you uncover all of the spectacular sights of Croatia on our walking trips. Many of our customers join us as solo travelers so you'll be in good company and likely to make new friends en-route.

What makes a perfect vacation?  Immersing yourself in the history, rich culture, and natural beauty of a country? Enjoying fine cuisine, superb wines, and candlelit dinners alfresco in traditional fishing villages? Exploring walled medieval hill towns, Roman ruins, sandy Mediterranean beaches—all with a small group of friends?  Then join us in Croatia where we check all the boxes for your perfect trip.

The mix you’re looking for

Croatia is the perfect mix of enrichment and relaxation. It’s the Mediterranean the way it used to be. Croatia seamlessly blends 2000 years of palatial magnificence with quaint and time-forgotten villages. You’ll discover the stunning beauty of national parks, Istrian vineyards, and a glistening Adriatic coastline.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

You’ll walk through the maze of 16 lakes that spill into each other with hundreds of waterfalls and rivulets. And rather than make a quick stop then drive away, you’ll spend the night in the national park within earshot of the flowing water.

Island hopping in the Adriatic

You’ll spend a full day on each of the most enchanting islands on the Dalmatian Coast. You start with fashionable Hvar, then on to Korčula, the birthplace of Marco Polo. The island of Mljet is a national park with placid salt lakes and an ancient monastery on an island within an island. Finally, you’ll enjoy Lopud, a car-free island with just 300 inhabitants—but home to over 14,000 at its peak of 17th-century power.

Discover Split and Dubrovnik

These popular Adriatic ports of call are walled cities preserving timeless treasures. Split encompasses the sprawling Palace of Diocletian—and you’ll stay the night at a luxury hotel within the palace. Dubrovnik regularly receives praise as the most beautiful medieval city in the world. You’ll stay within the walls of the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Istrian Peninsula

With vineyards, olive groves, walled hill towns, and Roman ruins, you could easily mistake Istria for Italy. You’ll stay in Motovun, the most charming of Istrian hill towns. A winery tour and hunting truffles are both a delectable delight and an unforgettable memory.

Istria, a jewel in the Adriatic

This idyllic Croatian peninsula flies under the radar

The fishing port of Rovinj in Istria, Croatia, at sunset

With its rugged coastline and green rolling hills, Istria is the perfect destination for anyone craving time spent in the great outdoors. Visitors to this heart-shaped peninsula in northern Croatia can go from sailing to hiking to truffle hunting in a matter of hours — with a break or two for decadent wine tasting. Here's where to go for the full Istrian experience, with wineries and truffles galore.

Cobblestone charm in Rovinj

The cobblestone streets in Rovinj add a quaint touch to the town

For a coastal escape, head to Rovinj. Follow the cobblestone streets that weave through this charming seaside town and see where they lead you — it might be down to the shore to watch the fishermen in port, to the Batana Eco Museum that's dedicated to the wooden boat Rovinj is best-known for, or to Old Town. Stroll past  colorful buildings and pop into boutiques and sites like the Baroque Church of St. Euphemia. For a small admission fee, you can climb to the top of the church's belfry to take in beautiful views of the area.

Golden Cape Forest Park is a green oasis

More spectacular scenery is close by at Golden Cape Forest Park. Park visitors can walk or bike along the paths at this verdant space, filled with cypresses, laurel trees, Lebanese cedar and eucalyptus. If you are more of a beach bum, head to the turquoise waters of Lone Bay to swim or explore the pebbled shoreline.

Go back in time in Pula

Centuries ago, gladiators battled in this Roman Amphitheater

In Pula, the largest town on the peninsula, history still stands. The Roman Amphitheater dates back to the first century, and gladiators once fought here. But it has a new purpose today: The imposing limestone arena draws sightseers and hosts concerts, athletic competitions and the Pula Film Festival. The Temple of Augustus was constructed between 27 B.C. and A.D. 14 and destroyed during World War II, but it was almost immediately reconstructed. The nearby Golden Gate is from a similar era, built between 29 and 27 B.C.

Hunting for underground treasures

The rare white truffle can be found in Istria

Make sure you add truffle hunting to your Istria to-do list, because this is one of the only places in the world where both black and white truffles grow. Expert truffle hunters take visitors to the forests in Motovun and the Mirna River Valley to search for these delicacies, often ending the adventure with a tasting.

If you want to eat truffles without all the hard work, head straight to restaurants like Zigante in Buje. Here, truffles are always the house special and the menu is built around the harvesting schedule. Black truffles are available year-round and white truffles are there in the fall and early winter.

Istrian hospitality at its best

Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery has a contemporary design

Wine lovers, rejoice! Istria is one of Europe's oldest winemaking regions and the town of Bale is leading the charge. The region's fertile soil and Mediterranean climate makes it ideal for grape growing, and over 100 wine producers have set up shop here. At the elegant Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery , guests get to see the intricacies of winemaking up close. The property's 12 acres of vineyards produce 14 varieties of red and white wines that can be sampled during individual or group tastings, with full glasses enjoyed at dinners in the on-site restaurant . Accommodations include contemporary rooms, suites and residences and luxurious stone villas with gardens and private pools. While wine is the main attraction, Meneghetti also grows olives — and their "liquid gold" oil is beloved.

Olive groves are all around the San Canzian Hotel & Residences

The picturesque San Canzian Hotel & Residences in the medieval village of Mužolini Donji blends traditional Istrian design with modern amenities. The 24 well-appointed rooms and suites overlook lush olive groves and forests, as does the large rooftop infinity pool. For a truly restorative experience, book a massage in the spa and take advantage of the Finnish sauna, wellness zone with jacuzzi, and hot and cold foot bath. Afterward, you can retreat to the on-site Michelin-recommended Luciano Restaurant for a dinner made with fresh local ingredients.

The modern Roxanich Winery & Design Hotel boasts bold decor

The Roxanich Winery & Design Hotel feels thoroughly contemporary, featuring 32 sleek rooms and suites with custom furniture and flooring. This hillside property promises gorgeous views of Mirna River Valley and its vineyards produce 20 varieties of organic wines (try them, along with Istrian specialities made from local produce, in the hotel's innovative restaurant). Roxanich is a family affair, owned by Mladen Rožanić and his six daughters.

Get a taste of Istria

Savor the flavors of Istria at the intimate Malo Selo restaurant in Buje. Try out the stone dining rooms or get some fresh air outside and order the fireplace-grilled steak, homemade bread, traditional pljukanci with boskarin pasta dish, and fresh gnocchi (of course, you can always add truffles to your order). Taverns like Konoba Kazun in Pula and Konoba Vorichi in Orihi also serve Istrian specialities and fresh seafood, meat, pasta, risotto and local wines.

Are you a fan of fresh seafood? Tony's Oyster Shack is as good as it gets. For the last 20 years, Tony's has been raising oysters in the protected waters of the Lim Fjord and serving them up to happy diners with glasses of wine. True bivalve fans can even book a private boat tour with Tony's to go looking for oysters.
