Mission San Juan Capistrano

mission hope tour

Misión San Luis Rey de Francia

Mission of “hope”, mission san fernando, rey de españa.

It was our third straight Sunday in our relatively newfound quest to visit all 21 of California’s Missions, and today Tracy and I were on our way to visit our third Mission in as many weeks, the Mission San Fernando, Rey de España, which was founded on “The Feast of the Birth of Mary,” September 8, 1797. After visiting Mission San Juan Capistrano last weekend, we thought the next Mission would be quite a letdown. Boy, were we surprised!

P1020472

Not only were the grounds pleasant to walk around, but the Mission San Fernando, Rey de España has a plethora of historical artifacts and interesting relics, not to mention the tomb of one of America’s comic icons. Who knew? And after our tour, there was another Mission surprise just around the corner. I only wish I had known earlier about it.

We paid our four dollar entrance fee, picked up our Mission Cheat Sheet, and it was time to roam the grounds of this Mission, the fourth to be founded by Father Fermín Lasuén in the span of four months in 1797. Busy guy. It was named for Saint Ferdinand III, King of Spain in the 1200s.  This one also happened to be located near the first gold discovery in Alta California.  It was the 17th of California’s 21 Missions.

P1020494

The Mayordomo’s House is where the foreman of the Mission ranch resided.

P1020474

Our next visit was to the Convento, which took more than 13 years to build. This was quite a find, and Tracy and I were amazed at the preservation work that had been done to renovate the rooms of the Convento. Included among the artifacts are the oldest organ in North America.

shapeimage_6

As you can see, the rooms have been meticulously restored.

P1020480

We ducked into the next room. No, literally, we had to duck!

P1020487

Madonnas Gone Wild, or simply The Madonna Room as they call it, is a place where Mary is everywhere. And I mean everywhere. I felt like singing Along Comes Mary.

P1020492

There was a replica of an old Wells Fargo stagecoach in one room, and a beautiful altarpiece in another room.

P1020488

Back outside, we walked past the statue of Father Lasuén and strolled through the West Garden and saw the back The Old Mission Church. The door was locked.

shapeimage_15

Going out the other door, we found ourselves in the Camposanto (Cemetery).

P1020515

Before entering the garden, we passed by the Our Lady of Hope statue, a replica of a famous 17th-century sculpture of Mary at the Basilica of Our Lady of Hope in Pontmain, France. The statute was said to be a favorite of the Hope family.

shapeimage_24

Tracy and I were impressed by how well the Mission San Fernando, Rey de España has been restored through the years, and we left thinking our visit was complete. However, when I was on my computer later in the day, I found we had missed something.

A Visit to Mission: Border Hope

by Leisa Parsons, Area Media Specialist

mission hope tour

Mission: Border Hope received a great deal of attention from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Friday. Located in Eagle Pass, Mission: Border Hope aids asylum seekers in their journey to reach family members in the United States. It was another typical day for Mission: Border Hope on Friday, as they welcomed over 700 asylum seekers. They were offered shower facilities, hot meals, clean clothes and many, many travel plans were made.

mission hope tour

Early Friday morning a truck arrived from the Church’s Humanitarian Services with 24 pallets of food for Mission: Border Hope’s kitchen. The boxes of beans, cake mixes, pasta, peanut butter, stew and many other items will help them in their goal of feeding and welcoming the asylum seekers. Missionaries and others helped unload the truck, fully filling the facility’s storage area.

mission hope tour

On Friday evening, President Camille Johnson, Relief Society General President and President Susan Porter, Primary General President for the Church, arrived to tour Mission: Border Hope’s facility and meet many of the asylum seekers. They were accompanied by Area Authorities, Elder Jorge Contreras and Elder Art Rascon.

mission hope tour

Elder Rascon and President Johnson were visiting with one man who had traveled from Quito, Ecuador with his wife who is a few months pregnant. They are awaiting transport on one of the free busses, sponsored by the state, heading to New York. Their ultimate destination is with family in Queens, New York.

mission hope tour

The Church visitors heard many stories of their journeys that brought them to Eagle Pass, most on foot, some with a few bus segments sprinkled in between. They heard of their hopes for freedom and better opportunities for their families. The spirit of Mission: Border Hope is one that is palpably felt as care and service are extended to “the least of these”.

mission hope tour

Sisters Johnson and Porter were also touched as they saw the large amount of food that had been delivered earlier in the day. Asking what more the Church could do to help, Diana Rodriguez, of Mission: Border Hope mentioned clothing, “warm clothing is needed now.”

mission hope tour

Sisters Johnson and Porter also met with Sigrid Gonzales, who works with Homeland Security and is a senior advisor for Customs and Border Patrol. Gonzales spoke of the journey of many of the immigrants, their processing and their background checks. She said there are two types of immigrants, the “getaways and the give-ups.”

mission hope tour

Gonzales continued, “The give-ups are the people who turn themselves in and from there, they have different pathways. We receive them, we process them, and get their fingerprints. If something pops up during the check, we send them to I.C.E. for removal proceedings. If they are unaccompanied children, without anyone, we send them to HHS (Health and Human Services) for them to be reunited with their families in a separate process.”

mission hope tour

Gonzales explained, “If they are amenable to Title 42 policy, which is a health policy, we have directives with countries, like Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, that we can send them back.” There are some people who are released under Title 8. Title 8 allows them to be released within the United States, with documentation. Those people must notify I.C.E. upon reaching their final destination. Gonzales said, “We release them with the understanding that they are going to be checking in while they are awaiting their asylum proceeding.” The Title 8 people are those that come into the migrant centers, like Mission: Border Hope. They have been processed through legal channels and permitted to enter the country.

PGA TOUR Champions

The Galleri Classic: Preview storylines, how to watch and more

Change Text Size

PGA TOUR Champions closes out the month of March with the second playing of The Galleri Classic at historic Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California.

Defending champion David Toms will tee it up with a loaded field that includes Charles Schwab Cup points leader Steven Alker.

Six members of the World Golf Hall of Fame will join them, including Fred Couples and Ernie Els. Other notables include reigning Charles Schwab Cup winner Steve Stricker, Jerry Kelly and both captains of the 2024 Presidents Cup, Jim Furyk (USA) and Mike Weir (International).

Toms captured the inaugural event last year, going wire-to-wire to claim his second victory of the 2023 PGA TOUR Champions season. It wasn't all plain sailing for Toms as Retief Goosen birdied nine of his first 12 holes in the final round to take a three-shot lead. But Toms took back control playing the final 10 holes in 6-under, while the South African played the final six holes in 2-over.

The Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills will once again host. From 1988 to 2022, the course was home to The Chevron Championship one of the LPGA's five majors.

So far, the 2024 season has featured five different winners, each from a different country: Steven Alker (New Zealand), Stephen Ames (Canada), Ricardo Gonzalez (Argentina), Joe Durant (United States) and Padraig Harrington (Ireland). Can the field of international contenders continue this trend?

Tournament facts

  • Course: Mission Hills Country Club, par 72, 7,165 yards
  • Field: 78 players (54 holes)
  • Defending champion: David Toms
  • Purse: $2,200,000 (winner: $330,000)
  • Low 18-hole score: 65 (four times)
  • Low 36-hole score: 135, David Toms (2023)
  • Low 54-hole score: 200, David Toms (2023)

Frank L. Hope, lead architect of San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium, 93

Frank Hope, the lead architect of Qualcomm Stadium, at the stadium in 2015.

His firm designed many of San Diego’s office towers, hotels and hospitals, but its crowning achievement was the $28 million, all-concrete San Diego Stadium in Mission Valley, later renamed San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, Qualcomm Stadium and SDCCU (San Diego Credit Union) Stadium.

Frank L. Hope, one of San Diego’s postwar architects who helped reshape the city and is best known for his role in developing the San Diego Stadium in Mission Valley, died earlier this month. He was 93.

Hope headed the city’s largest architectural firm, Hope Design Group, focusing on civic, commercial and institutional projects.

By the time he retired in the early 1990s, the firm with a staff of 150 designed hospitals, office towers, hotels and pursued international work in Asia, Europe and the Mideast.

Its crowning achievement was the $28 million, all-concrete San Diego Stadium in Mission Valley. It was later renamed San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, Qualcomm Stadium and SDCCU (San Diego Credit Union) Stadium.

Hope also served on numerous civic boards and commissions but also made time to sail his yacht to Catalina, pilot his Cessna across the country and ski in Mammoth. He died at Mercy Hospital on March 18, three weeks shy of his 94th birthday.

Kevin deFreitas, past president of the local American Institute of Architects chapter and current president of the San Diego Architectural Foundation, said Hope was a player in the “golden era” of California “when regulation was certainly minimal, growth was explosive and there was all that post-war optimism and resources.”

Bill Lawrence, president and CEO of the San Diego History Center, called Hope’s design group one of the “major firms in our region that helped define the look of San Diego.”

Malin Burnham, one of the last surviving civic leaders of that era, said Hope typified those who built San Diego without expecting favoritism in return.

“It’s more than just business we’re looking for — it’s building the community,” Burnham said.

In 2015 Hope joined a group of architects to take stock of the stadium as debate swirled around replacing it to keep the Chargers in San Diego.

“It looks fine to me,” he said. “After reading what I’ve read in the paper by sports writers, I expected the whole thing to be a junk heap. It looks as nice as almost any athletic facility looks.”

Of course, the Chargers left, the stadium was demolished, and San Diego State University built the smaller and less architecturally dominating Snapdragon Stadium.

Born April 10, 1930, in San Diego, Frank Lewis Hope III was the son of Frank L. Hope Sr. (1901-1994), who founded the family architectural firm in 1928. The elder Hope left behind several architectural landmarks, including the Carmelite Monastery in Normal Heights (1930), Home Tower (Chase Bank, 707 Broadway, 1963) and Timken Museum of Art, Balboa Park (1965).

To meet the needs of a rapidly growing city’s needs, Hope and his father produced a “fantastic” number of buildings, said Keith York, curator of the modernsandiego.org website focused on local architects.

The younger Hope graduated from San Diego High School and UC Berkeley, served in the Army in Germany and joined his father’s firm in 1956, followed by his brother Charles, a civil engineer.

After the Los Angeles Chargers moved to San Diego in 1961 and settled into Balboa Stadium while civic leaders considered building a larger facility, Hope toured the country studying stadiums before winning the commission to oversee the stadium project, designed by Gary Allen.

Opened in 1967, it was known for its monumental circular access ramps and lighting system mounted into 28-ton precast concrete rings.

“Coming in here to see the whole thing full of people, it was an incredible feeling to me,” he recalled during the 2015 tour.

Hope was named a fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1972 and a decade later, the stadium received a national AIA honor award.

The firm soon won ever more commissions and grew the staff to meet the growing demand: McGill Hall at UC San Diego’s Muir College (1969); the former Union-Tribune building in Mission Valley (1973); numerous hospitals and their expansions, including Pomerado Hospital (1977); Columbia Center office tower, (now 1 Columbia Place at 401 W. A St., 1982); and the east tower of the Inter-Continental Hotel, (now Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, 1984).

Douglas F. Manchester, developer of both Columbia Center and the twin-towers Marriott, called Hope “an incredible architect and a man for all seasons.”

“He was a deal maker, a man whose handshake was as good as gold, a person who loved deeply his city, state and country,” Manchester said. “His family was to him all important. He was a friend, a patriot and extremely important contributor to San Diego, America’s Finest City.”

Hope also had a hand in designing Horton Plaza shopping center, considering underground parking at Seaport Village and competing to redevelop the parking lots flanking the County Administration Center.

Hope opened offices in Santa Ana and San Francisco and won a contract to design a $75 million U.S. Navy airfield in the Philippines. In the 1970s his firm designed 25 vocational education colleges in Saudi Arabia, worth upward of $1 billion.

Meanwhile, Hope served as president of the local and state chapters of the American Institute of Architect, commodore of the San Diego Yacht Club, chairman of both the San Diego Chamber of Commerce and San Diego Unified Port District board and member of the University of California Board of Regents.

Hope met with architect Gordon Carrier to review plans by Gunnar Birkerts for an underground addition to UC San Diego’s Geisel Library, completed in 1993.

“He wasn’t really one prone to wax poetic about design,” said Carrier, who heads the Carrier Johnson + Culture architectural firm.

Hope got right to the point: “So you’re telling me this building is below grade and is not going to leak.”

Carrier thought, “Well, it’s a good question.”

Like the heads of most large firms, Hope spent more time on business than design. But he insisted on excellence at his office and championed quality in public and private. He didn’t wait for edicts from government authorities.

“I think that by educating the people on the need for good design and having the public make its feelings known are the ways you should get design in a democratic system,” he told the Evening Tribune in 1983.

For all its success, Hope’s firm fell victim to the 1990s real estate recession. His son Leland closed the company’s doors in 1993 and went on to found his own sole-proprietorship firm.

But as he and his sisters said in a biographical sketch of their father, “Work was important to Frank, yet his passion for adventure and fun was primary.”

Hope and his wife Barbara sold their Point Loma family house and moved into their yacht Verve at the Bay Club Hotel and Marina, where he was a partner. They summered in Avalon Bay in Catalina, and in winter, skied Mammoth Mountain slopes. Hope took flying lessons and bought a single-engine Cessna to take trips across the country.

Hope is survived by his wife of 71 years; son; four daughters, Gretchen Robinson of San Diego, Gail Metzger of Goldhill, Ore., Carolyn Hoffos of Ramona, and Jacqui Tejedas of Kaiser, Ore.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

No memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his name be made to Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra, a Mammoth nonprofit that helps people with physical or intellectual disabilities experience winter and summer sports.

'Singularly up to the job': Hope Center coworkers remember Cecil Dunn as a director on a mission

mission hope tour

Colleagues, admirers, and thousands whose lives were deeply impacted by him are remembering Cecil Dunn – the longtime director of Lexington’s Hope Center. He passed away on Saturday after a brief illness.

Dunn enjoyed a long legal career that saw him wear many hats, but it’s his decades-long stint leading a beloved organization dedicated to providing housing, shelter, and hope for countless people facing homelessness in Lexington that’s at the heart of his legacy.

Dunn was director for most of the six years Brooke Raby worked for the Hope Center. She remembers a kind, driven, and engaged presence that always had the big picture in mind.

"Cecil was singularly up to the job of making sure the Hope Center lived up to its mission."

On a personal level, Raby recalls Dunn as a man who knew where his heart led him.

"He was funny. He knew everything and was always so determined to make everything work. He had a tremendous amount of self-confidence that was driven by his desire to do the best for the largest amount of people," Raby says. "We loved him. We felt so inspired working with him."

Dunn was a Richmond native. He is survived by his wife, Judy Gish, and three sons, Patrick, Michael, and Geoffrey.

In a dark year after a deadly rampage, how a church gave Nashville's Covenant School hope

After the mass shooting on march 27, 2023, the covenant school had nowhere to go. a nashville church stepped in. “they immediately wrapped us up and said, ‘you have a home here.'".

mission hope tour

Covenant School first grade teacher Kellie Reifenberger wiped away tears as she reflected on a year of trauma and healing. She's struggled at times but said her faith in God has never been stronger thanks to one special church that has served as a temporary home for Covenant in the wake of the tragedy in Tennessee.

“In the darkest of days, we have to look for the light,” she said. “Our alma mater at Covenant says we’re a beacon on a hill, and these people have been a beacon in our valley.”

Wednesday marks one year since a mass shooter, armed with two assault-like rifles and a handgun, killed six people at the Nashville Christian elementary school on March 27, 2023.

The victims were head of school Katherine Koonce, 60; custodian Mike Hill, 61; substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, 61; and 9-year-old third-graders Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney and Hallie Scruggs, the Covenant Presbyterian Church pastor’s daughter.

Police killed the shooter 14 minutes after the initial 911 call.

In a building riddled with bullet holes and traumatic memories, Covenant staff scrambled to find a space where they could finish the school year and provide some version of a normal routine for students.

Five miles east of Covenant’s hilltop campus, leaders at Brentwood Hills Church of Christ sprung into action and offered their building.

The biggest mission yet for local church

Founded in Nashville in 1955, Brentwood Hills had long supported its community with local missions. This was their biggest mission yet.

The 1,000-member congregation moved meetings to free up space and converted small Bible study rooms into classrooms with books, bulletin boards and other supplies.

The Tennessee Department of Education approved the use of the church as a temporary school, and within weeks, the hallways were filled with roughly 200 Covenant students and staff.

It was cramped, but they were together.

“From day one they have been so welcoming and loving,” Reifenberger said. “They immediately wrapped us up and said, ‘You have a home here.’”

Covenant is now preparing to bring students back to the school's original building in April after nearly a year at the makeshift campus.

In interviews, Reifenberger and several parents said they are profoundly grateful to Brentwood Hills for providing a safe and healing space.

While they will continue to face challenges, they said they feel ready to return to Covenant’s campus and move forward.

Covenant School community finds safety after tragedy

Reifenberger taught second grade last year and was with her class when the gunshots rang out.

A new teacher at Covenant, she had recently moved from Atlanta with her husband and felt instantly welcomed by the school’s close-knit community.

In the days following the tragedy, Reifenberger, a teacher for two decades, knew she would stay with her students, but she worried about how they would finish the school year.

She said she was immediately put at ease when she was greeted by Brentwood Hills staff and parishioners on the first day in the church.

“They just welcomed us and invited us to everything,” she said. “They even invited the teachers to Bingo Night.”

At lunchtime, church staff read books to the children. On hot days, a parishioner brought red umbrellas to protect kids from the sun.

They let therapy dogs into the church lobby to comfort the children, and on school theme days, like Western Day, church staff would dress the part.

Timeline: The Covenant School shooting and the dramatic year that followed

In May, the church threw a big picnic barbeque with bouncy houses, face painting and carnival games. All the Covenant families were invited.

Reifenberger said the picnic was a big hit with the kids and helped with the healing process.

For her own healing, Reifenberger, a 58-year-old mother of three, said she takes daily walks in the fresh air.

“I just try to keep doing things that I know are good for my body, and focus on the light and the good,” she said. “I don’t worry about the small things anymore.”

Memories of the school shooting haunt families

For Meredith and Brent Leatherwood, whose three children attend Covenant (their daughter was in Reifenberger’s class during the shooting), the past year has seen ups and downs.

“There's a lot of times where it feels good, that they've been able to recover from this in a good way, even though it's never ever going to be fully over,” Meredith Leatherwood said. “But then there are moments that take you right back to it.”

But the Leatherwoods said Brentwood Hills has been integral in helping their children through the anxious days.

They’re different denominations. Covenant is Presbyterian, while Brentwood Hills is Church of Christ. Brent Leatherwood serves as president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. But he said they’re all unified under Christ.

“In this moment, Brentwood Hills flung open their doors to a community that had been scattered by the most horrific event imaginable,” he said. “What an incredible picture of the gospel.”

April Manning, a Covenant mom of three and a former parent association president, said she feels the same.

“For me as a parent, it was terrifying having to get used to bringing them back to school, so to have them be in such a warm and loving place, it helped the kids but it also helped the parents,” she said.

When Manning thanked church staff one day for letting Covenant use the building, she said they thanked her, noting that it was “God’s building.”

Brooke Ryan said her 10-year-old son initially had a hard time getting out of the car to go to school in the new building.

He felt his classroom was too far away from his younger sister’s class and feared he wouldn’t be able to save her if there was another shooting, Ryan said.

But his anxiety eased over the months. And recently, Ryan said, he was so eager to go to school one morning that he jumped out of the car. He forgot to say goodbye to her.

“I think that’s a testament to the healing space they provided,” she said.

Covenant students and staff returning to campus in April

As for returning to the original Covenant campus next month, parents said they are ready to go back as they all have a shared experience and understanding. A mix of joy and sorrow.

“We can sit in a chapel and feel so much joy that our kids are on stage singing and smiling, and then I can turn to another parent and just start crying, and they get it,” Ryan said. “It’s like being with your family.”

Ryan’s husband, Adam Ryan, said he hopes Covenant can change the narrative and move past the negative association with the name that has plagued other school tragedies, like in Uvalde, Texas.

“My prayer is that there will be another narrative, another feeling that comes to mind when someone mentions Covenant in that setting,” he said.

Parents said they have been preparing their kids for returning to campus by attending small school events.

“I tell them we’re not going to be afraid of this building because this is the Lord’s building, this belongs to the Lord,” Meredith Leatherwood said. “We’re gonna let God heal us through this.”

Healing with support from Nashville and around the world

In addition to the help from Brentwood Hills, Reifenberger said she was blown away by the support from Nashville and around the world.

She said her class received heartfelt letters from other students in countries like France and Canada. Local schools and bookstores donated supplies, while restaurants gave free lunches.

Covenant School in a statement said it has been overwhelmed over the past year by the love and support from the Nashville community and Brentwood Hills Church of Christ.

“While for most people March 27 was something terrible that happened almost a year ago, for us, it is still very much an everyday part of life that we continue to navigate through with the wellbeing of our community as our number one concern,” the school said.

As she looks to the future, Reifenberger said she felt it was important to tell the story of the church that lifted a school in a time of need.

“I know March 27 is coming and there's going to be horrible stories,” she said. “But this is what the world needs to see. There's such goodness in this world.”

Tour of Flanders 2024 – Analysing the contenders

Van der Poel is a force to be reckoned with on the cobbles but Pedersen opens up hope for other race favourites

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike)

The second Monument of the year has arrived with the Tour of Flanders just days away and the scene set for an intriguing battle over the 270km from Antwerp to Oudenaarde.

There has been a reshuffling of the contenders after the testing of the waters at the run-in races, with some potential favourites have fallen down, or even off, the list while others have made it clear that their rightful place is right near the very top. Mads Pedersen and his Lidl-Trek team, for one, delivered a reminder of the power in team strength with his impressive Gent-Wevelgem victory over Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck).

The spotlight will of course largely be focussed on the regular rivals of Van der Poel and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) who will be facing off for only the second time this road season at the cobbled Classic. However, as Pedersen made clear, that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of others in the field that could pose a threat.

Many have named the Tour of Flanders as a key focus for the year, though do they have what it takes to land a shot in the centre of the target? Cyclingnews runs the ruler over key favourites for the 2024 edition of the eagerly anticipated cobbled Classic.

Get unlimited access to all of our coverage of the Spring Classics- including reporting, breaking news and analysis from the Paris-Roubaix, Tour of Flanders and more.  Find out more .

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck)

The world champion has a record at the Tour of Flanders that makes him the most clear-cut of favourites plus he has delivered a run in that has done plenty to bolster his claim. The 29-year-old may have just started his road season in mid-March but it began on a strong note with a powerful showing at Milan San-Remo , where he may have come tenth but had utilised his clear strength to shepherd teammate Jasper Philipsen toward a sprint victory. Then there was a win at E3 Saxo Classic – a key pre-Flanders test given it uses many of the same climbs and cobbles – and a second at Gent-Wevelgem so there is no doubt he has already built back to formidable form after his post-cyclocross season break. Still, the fact that he didn't win in Wevelgem, admitting he was still paying for the efforts at E3, has left his rivals with at least a glimmer of hope.

Still, a reminder of his history at the race could quickly dull that glimmer. His worst result from five starts is a fourth in his debut year, 2019. Since then Van der Poel hasn’t once budged from the top two steps of the podium.  Wins came in 2020 and 2022, with the rider who kept him out of the top spot most recently – Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) – not taking to the start line on Sunday while 2021 winner Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep) hasn’t exactly had flying form so far this season. Plus, if Van der Poel keeps up his pattern of the last four years – alternating second place and first – 2024 is the year he will celebrate his third victory.

Still, it's not just Van der Poel's rivals that could contribute to a break in the pattern, given the Alpecin-Deceuninck squad he'll have assembled alongside him on the start line. Philipsen's victory at the first Monument of the season, Milan-San Remo, is the perfect example as the rainbow jersey-clad Van der Poel switched from contender mode to become the most impressive domestique a sprinter could hope for. Still, it's hard to imagine the team could throw their weight behind any other option than Van der Poel in the Tour of Flanders.

Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike)

HARELBEKE BELGIUM MARCH 22 Wout van Aert of Belgium and Team Visma Lease a Bike competes in the chase group passing through the Oude Kwaremont cobblestones sector while fans cheer during the 67th E3 Saxo Bank Classic Harelbeke 2024 a 2076km one day race from Harelbeke to Harelbeke UCIWT on March 22 2024 in Harelbeke Belgium Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

With the two riders so often mentioned in the same breath, it will probably come as no surprise to see Van der Poel's name quickly followed on the favourites list by Wout van Aert. The Ronde, however, is one race where the powerful Dutch rider definitely has the upper hand on long-time rival Van Aert. Plus the Belgian's Visma-Lease a Bike squad may not have had quite as powerful a start to the Classics season it would have hoped for . Still, perhaps that could even drive them even harder in the chase victory in Oudenaarde.

The team, which already had Christophe Laporte out with illness, will be determined to make sure Tour of Flanders is not a repeat of E3 Saxo Classic. There was a string of crashes that weighed on their chances and left a number of riders, including Van Aert, with some recovering to do before the Tour of Flanders. Still, with the team pointing to a quick recovery from the injuries, and a more than respectable third place from Van Aert at the race regardless, there should be little cause for concern ahead of Sunday.

Van Aert's path through the season so far has been vastly different from Van der Poel's, with an earlier start and a Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne win in late February before the rider headed off to train at altitude in preparation for the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. He then returned to racing at the E3 Saxo Classic and will also take on Wednesday's Dwars door Vlaanderen, a race Van der Poel is sitting out.

The Visma-Lease a Bike rider has not been out of the top six in the past three editions of the Tour of Flanders he has taken part in, with his best result being a second in 2020 and in 2023 he delivered fourth. He will be hoping his post-altitude training upswing kicks in and helps lift the level in 2024. Plus, while crashes and illness may have recently taken a toll there is still plenty of strength in the team, including the experience of 2022 runner-up Dylan van Baarle and Matteo Jorgenson , who came ninth on his debut at the race last year, won Paris-Nice in February and came fifth at E3 last week.

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek)

WEVELGEM BELGIUM MARCH 24 Mads Pedersen of Denmark and Team Lidl Trek celebrates at finish line as race winner during the 86th GentWevelgem in Flanders Fields 2024 Mens Elite a 2531km one day race from Ieper to Wevelgem UCIWT on March 24 2024 in Wevelgem Belgium Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

Mads Pedersen may have given every single one of Van der Poel's rivals hope as he proved the world champion was beatable at Gent-Wevelgem, but perhaps also at the same time instilled a little concern as the Lidl-Trek rider simultaneously proved just how big a challenge it may be to beat him. The cleverly played two-way duel with Van der Poel on the road to Wevelgem certainly showcased the power of Pedersen but also, once again, the Lidl-Trek team.

“You know Mathieu is one of the biggest stars in cycling. Without criticising my own team, none of us is on that level,” Pedersen said after the race. “If we want to beat guys like him or Wout [van Aert] or even [Tadej] Pogačar, we have to be with numbers and put pressure on them."

At the E3 Saxo Classic Lidl-Trek ended up with four riders in the top 11 and Jasper Stuyven in second before Pedersen worked his way up to the top step following the same strength-in-numbers battle plan at Gent-Wevelgem. There is little doubt given the success of the powerful teamwork – also often a winning difference in the women's squad – that applying the pressure will once again be a crucial component of the team plan. With riders like Stuyven, Jonathan Milan and Toms Skujins on the squad alongside Pedersen they have the cards to play that could just help them deliver another successful hand.

As Fabian Cancellara mused in his Cyclingnews column this week, Lidl-Trek are real contenders .

Neilson Powless and Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost)

SIENA ITALY MARCH 02 Neilson Powless of The United States and Team EF Education EasyPost competes while fans cheer during the 18th Strade Bianche 2024 Mens Elite a 215km one day race from Siena to Siena 320m UCIWT on March 02 2024 in Siena Italy Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

When it comes to the Tour of Flanders, it's difficult to choose between EF Education-EasyPost teammates Nielson Powless and Alberto Bettiol.

Powless has only competed in nine Classics during his career, but his eighth place at Liège-Bastogne-Liège two years ago, combined with a seventh at Milan-San Remo and fifth at the Tour of Flanders last year, make him a serious contender for a podium spot.

There is only one rider on the EF Education-EasyPost line-up who, based on experience, knows exactly what it takes to win the Tour of Flanders, and that is Alberto Bettiol. The Italian soloed to a victory in the 2019 edition after he surprised his rivals by riding away on the final climb of the Oude Kwaremont with 17km and then holding off all the big-name chasers. He has had a run of success this early season with a win at Milano-Torino and fifth place at Milan-San Remo, results that could bode well for him at the Tour of Flanders.

Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty)

HARELBEKE BELGIUM MARCH 22 Biniam Girmay of Eritrea and Team Intermarche Wanty competes passing through the Paterberg sector while fans cheer during the 67th E3 Saxo Bank Classic Harelbeke 2024 a 2076km one day race from Harelbeke to Harelbeke UCIWT on March 22 2024 in Harelbeke Belgium Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

Biniam Girmay took a different approach to his season this year, starting in Australia to see if it would be a better run toward his key Classics goals. He hasn't had a lot to show for it so far in terms of spring results but last weekend's Gent-Wevelgem did deliver some hope that the Classics form he was hoping for is starting to show. The 23-year-old Intermarché-Wanty rider came seventh at the race where he won the title in 2022 , finishing near the front of the reduced peloton that came over the line behind the break of Pedersen and Van der Poel.

Girmay made his Tour of Flanders debut last season but he will be hoping for a much better ending in 2024. A heavy crash and a concussion put an end to his chances not only at that race, but also saw him miss a planned Paris-Roubaix debut. The plan is to make that debut this year instead.

Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious)

HARELBEKE BELGIUM MARCH 22 Matej Mohoric of Slovenia and Team Bahrain Victorious attacks during the 67th E3 Saxo Bank Classic Harelbeke 2024 a 2076km one day race from Harelbeke to Harelbeke UCIWT on March 22 2024 in Harelbeke Belgium Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

Ever since that spectacular Milan-San Remo victory in 2022, aided by a dropper post descent, Mohorič is a name that regularly pops up as one to consider in the favourites list. Still, longshot is definitely a fitting description for the rider at Tour of Flanders as it isn't exactly a race where he has form, still his record on the long race to the Ligurian coastal town wasn't staggering either in the editions before he went on to take victory.

Milan-San Remo is just one example of just what the rider can deliver at high-stakes priority events and on the run into this season the current Gravel World Champion had slated Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix as two targets he had his mind set on for 2024.

The Slovenian's best finish at Ronde van Vlaanderen from his three participations has been 21st. However, he has come closer to the podium in the race which has much in common with Sunday's event, E3 Saxo Classic, where he came fourth in 2022 and seventh last year. That said, he was 15th this time in what turned out to be a chaotic crash-heavy edition. That was followed by a 13th at Gent-Wevelgem, so the build-up hasn't been spectacular but the spark of a fifth at Strade Bianche and sixth at Milan-San Remo may yet be rekindled.

Tim Wellens and Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates)

HARELBEKE BELGIUM MARCH 22 Tim Wellens of Belgium and UAE Team Emirates competes passing through the Paterberg sector while fans cheer during the 67th E3 Saxo Bank Classic Harelbeke 2024 a 2076km one day race from Harelbeke to Harelbeke UCIWT on March 22 2024 in Harelbeke Belgium Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

Off to a strong season's start, Tim Wellens has two podiums and five top-five finishes since he began racing at Vuelta Ciclista a la Region de Murcia "Costa Calida" in early February. It is his second place at Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, fourth at this week's E3 Classic and even his 12th at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and 13th at Strade Bianche that show his ability to contest the biggest one-day races with the best.

Racing on home soil during Belgium's cobbled Classics, Wellens has never quite pulled it together for the big show at the Tour of Flanders. His best finish in the 2021 edition was 25th. That's not to say he won't be among the contenders this year, even if he is among the second-tier behind the out-right favourites Van Aert, Van der Poel, and Pedersen.

He lines up with Marc Hirschi , who, like himself, tends to favour the other Monuments: Milan-San-Remo, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Il Lombardia. The team also has a powerful rider in Mikkel Berg, António Morgado, who was recently second at Le Samyn. Of course, there is also Nils Politt , who has already performed well this spring, with a second at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and seventh at E3 Classic.

Matteo Trentin (Tudor Pro Cycling)

WEVELGEM BELGIUM MARCH 24 Matteo Trentin of Italy and Tudor Pro Cycling Team competes during the 86th GentWevelgem in Flanders Fields 2024 Mens Elite a 2531km one day race from Ieper to Wevelgem UCIWT on March 24 2024 in Wevelgem Belgium Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

Matteo Trentin gives the second-tier Tudor Pro Cycling team a real contender at the Tour of Flanders. Last year, he finished in the top 10, his highest-placed finish of the 11 editions he has raced.

Signing with Tudor through 2026 , Trentin is a mentor and leader of the team but still brings his ambition to every race. During the Classics campaign, he finished ninth at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and, more recently, tenth at Gent-Wevelgem.

The challenging terrain moves up a notch at the Tour of Flanders, but Trentin has never shied away from difficult one-day races. More often than not, these routes are where he has shown his best career performances. Look no further than his fifth place at the Wollongong Worlds , second place at the Yorkshire Worlds, and fourth place at the Bergen Worlds.

He appears to be performing stronger as he races into the later years of his career, and he is the type of rider who can use his strength and experience to land on the podium in a race like the Tour of Flanders.

Kasper Asgreen and Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep)

Soudal-QuickStep - the Wolfpack - was once the ruler of the Classics, and now steps into Tour of Flanders with some possibilities, but it's certainly no longer the stand-out option. Still, it's hard to write off riders like Kasper Asgreen , even when he has had a so-so run into the race with his best result of the season so far a 16th at Milan-San Remo – he hadn't exactly lit up the early season leaderboard either in 2021, before taking the top step at both E3 and Flanders. Even while still on the build after injury he came seventh in Oudenaarde last year too.

Asgreen, as a former winner, may have a strong claim but Julian Alaphilippe has unfinished business. The two-time world champion hit a motorbike on his debut while out front with Van Aert and Van der Poel in 2020. Since then he has raced the Belgian Monument twice, finishing 42nd in 2021 and 51st in 2023 after being caught up in a massive crash. This year he has put a big target on the race and his recent ninth at Milan-San Remo will provide some encouragement as he strives to turn his record at the race, along with his season, around.

Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla)

SANREMO ITALY MARCH 16 Michael Matthews of Australia and Team Jayco AlUla celebrates at podium as second place winner during the 115th MilanoSanremo 2024 a 288km one day race from Pavia to Sanremo UCIWT on March 16 2024 in Sanremo Italy Photo by Dario BelingheriGetty Images

Tour of Flanders last year was a race better forgotten for Michael Matthews, as while he entered with hope after coming back with building form following COVID-19 he was quickly out of the action again due to crashes at the cobbled Classic. After that, the Australian commented on social media "Tour of Flanders I love you but sometimes you can be brutal, but I'll be back."

Now he is returning in 2024 with a far more promising spring and plenty of incentive to grasp a top result, having missed out by the narrowest of margins at Milan-San Remo in his photo finish sprint with Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck). Matthews' best result at the race so far is in the year of his debut, with sixth, but his performance at Milan-San Remo indicates that if things fall his way in 2024 the podium could perhaps be within grasp.

Blinken adds Israel stop to latest Mideast tour as tensions rise over Gaza war

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said during a visit to the Philippines that it’s urgent to make humanitarian assistance in Gaza a priority. According to the U.N., 100% of the population in Gaza is at severe levels of acute food insecurity and desperately in need of humanitarian assistance.

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Israel this week as part of his sixth urgent mission to the Middle East since the Israelis’ war with Hamas began in October, as relations between the two countries have soured dramatically in recent weeks.

The visit comes amid a flurry of calls, planned trips by U.S. and Israeli officials and public airings of severe disagreements over the state of the conflict — notably Israeli plans to mount a major military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah and what will happen to Gaza after the war ends.

The State Department said the Israel stop would cap Blinken’s latest Mideast tour that started in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday and will continue in Egypt on Thursday. The top U.S. diplomat will be in Tel Aviv on Friday after talks with Arab leaders and foreign ministers in Jeddah and Cairo focused on the war in Gaza.

“In Israel, Secretary Blinken will discuss with the leadership of the government of Israel the ongoing negotiations to secure the release of all hostages,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said. “He will discuss the need to ensure the defeat of Hamas, including in Rafah, in a way that protects the civilian population, does not hinder the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and advances Israel’s overall security.”

Tensions between the U.S. and Israel over the prosecution of the Gaza war have been mounting for months over rising civilian casualties. And they have intensified as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said he will ignore President Joe Biden’s warnings not to start a large-scale ground operation in Rafah without credible plans to protect innocent Palestinians who have sought refuge there.

Biden, facing a tough re-election campaign ahead of November’s presidential election, is under growing domestic pressure to rein in Israel’s military response to the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel. Opposition to the war in the United States, Arab nations and much of the rest of the world has shaped the evolution of Blinken’s frequent trips to the region since October.

His first two visits were largely focused on re-affirming U.S. support for Israel in the immediate aftermath of the Hamas attacks, but as civilian Palestinian casualties began to multiply and humanitarian conditions in Gaza deteriorated, his emphasis shifted to boosting humanitarian assistance and protecting innocents.

Since late last year, Blinken has also used his visits to stress the importance of Arab support for “day after” plans for Gaza and trying to coax Israeli leaders into accepting a status for the Palestinians that could help ensure Israel’s long-term security.

As that shift has taken place, though, the situation in Gaza has gotten worse and relations between the U.S. and Israel have nosedived. Public disagreements between Biden and Netanyahu have become more frequent and more intense.

In a phone call with Biden on Monday, their first in more than a month, Netanyahu agreed to send a high-level delegation to Washington to discuss plans for the proposed Rafah operation, and the Pentagon said Tuesday that Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant would visit the U.S. capital next week.

In his talks in Jeddah, Cairo and Tel Aviv, Blinken is expected to focus on attempts to negotiate a cease-fire and hostage release deal, increase humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza by land, air and sea and plan for the territory’s post-conflict future.

In the Red Sea city of Jeddah, Blinken met with Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. The prospect of normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel is seen as a potential point of leverage in pushing the Israelis on easing civilian suffering in Gaza.

Blinken and Prince Faisal “discussed the urgent need to protect all civilians in Gaza and immediately increase humanitarian assistance to those in need,” the State Department said, adding that “resolving the conflict” and “preparing for the post-conflict phase” remain a top priority.

Blinken also “emphasized the United States’ commitment to achieving sustained peace through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with security guarantees for Israel,” the department said in a statement.

But the Saudis have made clear that normalization won’t happen unless it is accompanied by a clear commitment from Israel to accept an independent Palestinian state by a date certain. Netanyahu and many members of his far-right government are opposed to a Palestinian state.

In Cairo on Thursday, Blinken will see Egyptian officials as well as meet with a six-member Arab committee that includes foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Morocco and the Palestinian Authority, according to an Egyptian diplomat.

This group has been charged with exploring ways to revamp, reform and revitalize the Palestinian Authority for a possible governance role in Gaza once the war is over. The West Bank-based Palestinian Authority has committed to reforms and replaced some of its top leadership.

Blinken’s discussions are also expected to touch on the cease-fire negotiations that have taken on new urgency as the humanitarian situation in Gaza has become increasingly dire.

Qatari officials, whose country is the main interlocutor with Hamas, said this week they were “cautiously optimistic” after talks with Israel’s intelligence chief in Doha. But, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said Tuesday that an Israeli ground operation in Rafah would set back any talks.

At least 31,819 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count but says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead. A United Nations food agency warned that “famine is imminent” in northern Gaza .

Palestinian militants killed some 1,200 people in the surprise Oct. 7 attack out of Gaza that triggered the war, and and abducted another 250 people. Hamas is still believed to be holding some 100 people hostage, as well as the remains of 30 others.
