20 Best Small Sailboats for the Weekender

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: August 4, 2021

In order to go cruising, most of us require a sailboat with a head, a galley, and bunks. The boat, likely a 30-footer and more often a 40-footer, will have electronics for navigation and entertainment, refrigeration if the trip is longer than a coastal hop, an engine for light wind, and, depending on our appetites for food and fun, perhaps a genset to power our toys and appliances.

To go sailing , however, all we really need is a hull, mast, rudder, and sail. To experience the pure joy of sheeting in and scooting off across a lake, bay, or even the open ocean, there’s nothing better than a small sailboat – we’re talking sailboats under 25 feet. You can literally reach out and touch the water as it flows past. You instantly feel every puff of breeze and sense every change in trim.

Some of the boats in this list are new designs, others are time-tested models from small sailboat manufacturers, but every one is easy to rig, simple to sail, and looks like a whole lot of fun either for a solo outing on a breezy afternoon or to keep family and friends entertained throughout your entire sailing season. This list is made up of all types of sailboats , and if you’re looking for a list of some of the best small sailboats for beginners, you’ll find exactly that here.

Any one of these popular boats could be labeled as a trailerable sailboat, daysailer, or even a weekender sailboat. And while most would be labeled as a one or two person sailboat, some could comfortably fit three or even four people.

Marblehead 22 Daysailer

If you have an eye for elegant lines and your heart goes pitter-patter over just the right amount of overhang beneath a counter transom, the Marblehead 22 daysailer, designed by Doug Zurn and built by Samoset Boatworks in Boothbay, Maine, will definitely raise your pulse. Traditional-looking above the waterline and modern beneath, the cold-molded hull sports a deep bulb keel and a Hall Spars carbon-fiber mast with a wishbone rig and square-top main. The 11-foot-9-inch cockpit can seat a crowd, and a small cuddy forward will let you stow your friends’ gear for the day. samosetboatworks.com

Catalina 22 Sport

Many a harbor plays host to an active fleet of Catalina 22s, one of the most popular small sailboats over the years, given its basic amenities and retractable keel, which allows it to be easily trailered. Recently, the company introduced the Catalina 22 Sport, an updated design that can compete with the older 22s. The boat features a retractable lead keel; a cabin that can sleep four, with a forward hatch for ventilation; and a fractional rig with a mainsail and a roller-furling jib. Lifelines, a swim ladder, and an engine are options, as are cloth cushions; vinyl cushions are standard. The large cockpit will seat a crowd or let a mom-and-pop crew stretch out and enjoy their sail. It’s clear why the Catalina 22 is one of the best sailboats under 25 feet. catalinayachts.com

With its large, open-transom cockpit and sloop rig, the Hunter 22 makes a comfortable daysailer for family and friends. But with its cuddy cabin, twin bunks, optional electrical system, opening screened ports, and portable toilet, a parent and child or a couple could comfortably slip away for an overnight or weekend. Add in the optional performance package, which includes an asymmetric spinnaker, a pole, and a mainsheet traveler, and you could be off to the races. The boat features a laminated fiberglass hull and deck, molded-in nonskid, and a hydraulic lifting centerboard. Mount a small outboard on the stern bracket, and you’re set to go. marlow-hunter.com

Not sure whether you want to race, cruise or just go out for an afternoon sail? Since 1958, sailors have been having a ball aboard the Uffa Fox/George O’Day-designed Daysailer. Fox, who in the 1950s was on the cutting edge of planning-dinghy design, collaborated with Fall River, Massachusetts boatbuilder O’Day Corp. to build the 16-foot Daysailer, a boat that features a slippery hull and a small cuddy cabin that covers the boat roughly from the mast forward. Thousands of Daysailers were built by various builders, and they can be found used for quite affordable prices. There are active racing fleets around the US, and new Daysailers are still in production today, built by Cape Cod Ship Building. capecodshipbuilding.com

BayRaider from Swallow Boats

Easy to rig and trailer, the BayRaider from England’s Swallow Yachts is a relative newcomer to the small-boat market in the United States. Nearly all of its 19 feet 9 inches is open cockpit, though a spray hood can be added to keep the forward sections dry. The BayRaider is ketch-rigged with a gunter-style mainmast. The topmast and mizzen are both carbon-fiber, which is an option for the mainmast as well. The BayRaider can be sailed with a dry hull in lighter conditions or with 300 pounds of water ballast to increase its stability. With the centerboard and hinged rudder raised, the boat can maneuver in even the thinnest water.

$28,900, (904) 234-8779, swallowyachts.com

Big fun can come in small packages, especially if your vessel of choice happens to be the 12 ½-foot Beetle Cat. Designed by John Beetle and first built in 1921, the wooden shallow draft sailboat is still in production today in Wareham, Massachusetts at the Beetle Boat Shop. With a draft of just 2 feet, the boat is well-suited for shallow bays, but equally at home in open coastal waters. The single gaff-rigged sail provides plenty of power in light air and can be quickly reefed down to handle a blow. In a word, sailing a Beetle Cat is fun. beetlecat.com

West Wight Potter P 19

With berths for four and a workable galley featuring a cooler, a sink, and a stove, West Wight Potter has packed a lot into its 19-foot-long P 19. First launched in 1971, this is a line of boats that’s attracted a true following among trailer-sailors. The P 19′s fully retractable keel means that you can pull up just about anywhere and go exploring. Closed-cell foam fore and aft makes the boat unsinkable, and thanks to its hard chine, the boat is reportedly quite stable under way. westwightpotter.com

NorseBoat 17.5

Designed for rowing and sailing (a motor mount is optional), the Canadian-built NorseBoat 17.5—one of which was spotted by a CW editor making its way through the Northwest Passage with a two-man crew—features an open cockpit, a carbon-fiber mast, and a curved-gaff rig, with an optional furling headsail set on a sprit. The lapstrake hull is fiberglass; the interior is ply and epoxy. The boat comes standard with two rowing stations and one set of 9-foot oars. The boat is designed with positive flotation and offers good load-carrying capacity, which you could put to use if you added the available canvas work and camping tent. NorseBoats offers a smaller sibling, the 12.5, as well; both are available in kit form.

$19,000, (902) 659-2790, norseboat.com

Montgomery 17

Billed as a trailerable pocket cruiser, the Montgomery 17 is a stout-looking sloop designed by Lyle Hess and built out of fiberglass in Ontario, California, by Montgomery Boats. With a keel and centerboard, the boat draws just under 2 feet with the board up and can be easily beached when you’re gunkholing. In the cuddy cabin you’ll find sitting headroom, a pair of bunks, a portable toilet, optional shore and DC power, and an impressive amount of storage space. The deck-stepped mast can be easily raised using a four-part tackle. The builder reports taking his own boat on trips across the Golfo de California and on visits to California’s coastal islands. Montgomery makes 15-foot and 23-foot models, as well. If you’re in search of a small sailboat with a cabin, the Montgomery 17 has to be on your wish list.

With long overhangs and shiny brightwork, the CW Hood 32 is on the larger end of the daysailer spectrum. Designers Chris Hood and Ben Stoddard made a conscious decision to forego a cabin and head in favor of an open cockpit big enough to bring 4 or 5 friends or family out for an afternoon on the water. The CW Hood 32 is sleek and graceful through the water and quick enough to do some racing, but keeps things simple with a self-tacking jib and controls that can be lead back to a single-handed skipper. A top-furling asymmetrical, electric sail drive and Torqeedo outboard are all optional. The CW Hood 32 makes for a great small family sailboat.  cwhoodyachts.com

Sun Cat from Com-Pac

Shallow U.S. East Coast bays and rock-strewn coasts have long been graced by cat boats, whose large, gaff-rigged mainsails proved simple and powerful both on the wind and, better yet, when reaching and running. The 17-foot-4-inch Sun Cat, built by Com-Pac Yachts, updates the classic wooden cat with its fiberglass hull and deck and the easy-to-step Mastender Rigging System, which incorporates a hinged tabernacle to make stepping the mast a one-person job. If you want a personal sailboat ideal for solo sailing, the Sun Can is a great choice. Belowdecks, the twin 6-foot-5-inch berths and many other features and amenities make this cat a willing weekender.

The Catalina 16.5 sits right in the middle of Catalina Yachts’ line of small sailboats, which range from the 12.5 to the 22 Capri and Sport, and it comes in both an easy-to-trailer centerboard model and a shoal-draft fixed-keel configuration. With the fiberglass board up, the 17-foot-2-inch boat draws just 5 inches of water; with the board down, the 4-foot-5-inch draft suggests good windward performance. Hull and deck are hand-laminated fiberglass. The roomy cockpit is self-bailing, and the bow harbors a good-sized storage area with a waterproof hatch. catalinayachts.com

No roundup of best small sailboats (trailerable and fun too) would be complete without a mention of the venerable Hobie 16, which made its debut in Southern California way back in 1969. The company has introduced many other multihulls since, but more than 100,000 of the 16s have been launched, a remarkable figure. The Hobie’s asymmetric fiberglass-and-foam hulls eliminate the need for daggerboards, and with its kick-up rudders, the 16 can be sailed right up to the beach. Its large trampoline offers lots of space to move about or a good place to plant one’s feet when hanging off the double trapezes with a hull flying. The boat comes with a main and a jib; a spinnaker, douse kit, trailer, and beach dolly are optional features. hobiecat.com

Novice sailors or old salts looking for simplicity could both enjoy sailing the Hunter 15. With a fiberglass hull and deck and foam flotation, the boat is sturdily built. The ample freeboard and wide beam provide stability under way, and the heavy-duty rubrail and kick-up rudder mean that you won’t have to worry when the dock looms or the going grows shallow. Both the 15 and its slightly larger 18-foot sibling come standard with roller-furling jibs.

Super Snark

Under various owners, the Snark brand of sailboats, now built by Meyers Boat Co., has been around since the early 1970s. The Super Snark, at 11 feet, is a simple, easily car-topped daysailer that’s fit out with a lateen rig and sail. Billed as unsinkable, the five boats in the company’s line are built with E.P.S. foam, with the external hull and deck vacuum-formed to the core using an A.B.S. polymer. The Super Snark weighs in at 50 pounds, and with a payload capacity of 310 pounds, the boat can carry two.

Norseboat 21.5

Built in Canada, the NorseBoat 21.5 is a rugged looking craft that comes in a couple of configurations: one with an open cockpit and small doghouse, and another with a smaller cockpit and cabin that houses a double berth for two adults and optional quarter berths for the kids. Both carry NorseBoat’s distinctive looking carbon fiber gaff-rigged mast with main and jib (a sprit-set drifter is optional), and come with a ballasted stub keel and centerboard. Because of its lightweight design, the boat can be rowed and is easily trailered.

Flying Scot

Talk about time-tested, the 19-foot Flying Scot has been in production since 1957 and remains a popular design today. Sloop rigged, with a conventional spinnaker for downwind work, the boat is an easily sailed family boat as well as a competitive racer, with over 130 racing fleets across the U.S. Its roomy cockpit can seat six to eight, though the boat is often sailed by a pair or solo. Hull and deck are a fiberglass and balsa core sandwich. With the centerboard up, the boat draws only eight inches. Though intended to be a daysailer, owners have rigged boom tents and berths for overnight trips, and one adventurous Scot sailor cruised his along inland waterways from Philadelphia to New Orleans.

Known primarily for its line of racing dinghys, RS Sailing also builds the 16-foot, 4-inch Venture, which it describes as a cruising and training dinghy. The Venture features a large, self-draining cockpit that will accommodate a family or pack of kids. A furling jib and mainsail with slab reefing come standard with the boat; a gennaker and trapeze kit are options, as is an outboard motor mount and transom swim ladder. The deck and hull are laid up in a fiberglass and Coremat sandwich. The Venture’s designed to be both a good performer under sail, but also stable, making it a good boat for those learning the sport.

Topper makes a range of mono- and multihull rotomolded boats, but the model that caught one editor’s eye at Strictly Sail Chicago was the Topaz Taz. At 9 feet, 8 inches LOA and weighing in at 88 pounds, the Taz is not going to take the whole crowd out for the day. But, with the optional mainsail and jib package (main alone is for a single child), the Taz can carry two or three kids or an adult and one child, and would make a fun escape pod when tied behind the big boat and towed to some scenic harbor. The hull features Topper’s Trilam construction, a plastic and foam sandwich that creates a boat that’s stiff, light, and durable, and shouldn’t mind being dragged up on the beach when it’s time for a break.

WindRider WRTango

WRTango, a fast, sturdy, 10-foot trimaran that’s easy to sail, is the newest portable craft from WindRider International. It joins a line that includes the WR16 and WR17 trimarans. The Tango features forward-facing seating, foot-pedal steering, and a low center of gravity that mimics the sensation of sitting in a kayak. It weighs 125 pounds (including the outriggers and carbon-fiber mast), is extremely stable, and has single-sheet sail control. The six-inch draft and kick-up rudder make it great for beaching, while the hull and outriggers are made of rotomolded polyethylene, so it can withstand running into docks and being dragged over rocks.

Best Small Sailboats for Beginners

sailboats for beginners

There are a number of classic trainers used by yacht club youth programs as well as techie new designs. Without mentioning specific models and brands, it’s difficult to outline which small boats are best but here are things to look for in good teaching boats.

Some of the best small sailboats for beginners include:

  • Boats with tillers steering
  • Boats with no winches
  • Sailing dinghies
  • Small sloops
  • Small catamarans
  • Rotomolded boats
  • Trailerable sailboats

Explore All Sailboat Types

Boats with Tiller Steering

Steering by tiller (rather than a wheel) can make a difference when learning. Tillers are directly connected to the rudder that manages the boat’s direction. Tillers provide quick feedback about the strength and direction of the wind as well as the boat’s turning agility at various speeds.

Boats with No Winches

Boats that require no winches to manage the sheets and halyards are best for youngsters and new sailors. These boats usually don’t experience the same forces on the sails and rigging as larger boats, which can be a handful when the wind starts to blow. Winches are usually replaced with cam or jam cleats, which are easy to use.

Sailing Dinghies

Sailing dinghies are usually rigged with one mast and one sail and offer kids and new sailors simplicity so it’s easy to learn the ropes. Less overwhelming than boats with two sails, dinghies are light and responsive. They also have a shallow draft due to side or centerboards so they can be sailed just about anywhere. In some cases (whether from a wind gust or sudden crew weight shift) sailing dinghies can capsize so students should wear lifejackets and know how to swim. Sailing dinghies are usually sailed by one or two people.

Small Sloops

Small sloops with a mast that carries head and mainsails are the next step so students learn how sails work together. Headsails can be hanked on or attached to a small roller furler. These boats may have some or no winches, which also makes them easier to maintain. These boats can usually be sailed with one to four people.

Some sloops can scale up, providing a more challenging experience for sailors as they develop skills. Certain models can carry spinnakers and larger headsails to teach sail combinations and new sail trim techniques. Others offer the ability to hike out (shift crew weight well outboard to balance the boat against the wind pressure in the sails). This kind of sailing is more advanced.

Small Catamarans

Small catamarans provide extra stability for those who may be nervous about capsizing or aren’t fond of heeling (tipping while sailing). With two hulls providing a wide and stable base, catamarans area ideal for beginners, which may be why they’re often used by resorts as their beach sailing tourist boats. Rigged with one or two sails, small cats are tiller steered and usually have a trampoline that the students sit on and sail.

Rotomolded Boats

Small rotomolded boats are very forgiving due to their durable construction. Unlike fiberglass or wooden boats, rotomolded (a type of plastic construction technique) trainers can bounce off docks or other boats and cause or sustain little damage. Dinghies and catamarans can both be made via rotomolding.

Trailerable Sailboats

Finally, small sailboats that can be trailered to different locations add variety and that makes learning fun. Students can learn to sail in different wind and water conditions and enjoy their boats differently on vacation or with new friends.

Learning to sail involves all the senses and requires a level head and lots of practice and although it can be learned in many ways, the best way is to start with a boat that’s small, simple, safe and durable.

Two Person Sailboat: The Ultimate Guide for Sailing Duos

by Emma Sullivan | Jul 28, 2023 | Sailboat Maintenance

2 person sailboat name

==Short answer: Two person sailboat== A two person sailboat, also known as a dinghy or skiff, is a small watercraft specifically designed for sailing with only two individuals onboard. These boats are typically lightweight and maneuverable, making them suitable for recreational sailing or competitive racing in various waters.

How to Choose the Perfect Two Person Sailboat: A Step-by-Step Guide

Choosing the perfect two-person sailboat is an exciting yet challenging task. The sheer range of options available can be overwhelming, and finding the right balance between comfort, performance, and affordability is crucial. Fear not, though! In this step-by-step guide, we will lead you through the intricate process of selecting the ideal two-person sailboat that perfectly suits your needs.

Step 1: Assess Your Experience Level Before embarking on your search for a duo-worthy vessel, honestly evaluate both yours and your sailing partner’s experience levels. Are you novices looking to dip your toes into the world of sailing together? Or perhaps seasoned sailors seeking a new adventure? This assessment will determine whether you should opt for a more forgiving boat with greater stability or one that demands expert maneuvering skills.

Step 2: Define Your Sailing Goals Are you planning leisurely day trips around calm lakes or envisioning extended journeys circumnavigating coastal regions? Clearly defining your sailing goals will significantly narrow down the type of sailboat you should consider. If quick jaunts are all you’re after, a smaller and simpler craft might suffice. However, if long-distance cruising beckons, a larger sailboat equipped with additional amenities becomes more appealing.

Step 3: Determine Your Budget Like any big purchase decision, budget plays an integral role in selecting a two-person sailboat. Setting realistic financial boundaries ensures you won’t overextend yourself while still landing an incredible vessel. Keep in mind that cost encompasses not only purchasing price but also factors such as maintenance expenses and potential upgrades down the line.

Step 4: Consider Boat Size and Type Here comes the fun part – thinking about boat size and type! From sleek sloops to cozy catamarans and everything in between, each has its own advantages depending on your preferences. Smaller boats offer simplicity and ease of handling but may sacrifice cabin space. Conversely, larger boats provide more living quarters but might demand higher maintenance and docking costs. Consider factors like stability, speed, versatility, and the number of berths needed.

Step 5: Inspect Build Quality and Construction Materials Evaluating a sailboat’s build quality is paramount to ensure durability, safety, and longevity. Research different manufacturers known for their craftsmanship and attention to detail. Examining the materials used in construction – such as fiberglass or aluminum – can provide insights into a boat’s sturdiness and performance under varying conditions.

Step 6: Examine Sailing Performance Features Are you ready to harness the wind’s power? Assessing a sailboat’s performance features is crucial for optimum sailing experiences. Elements like keel type (fin keel vs. bilge keel), rigging design (sloop, ketch, or yawl), and mast height directly impact handling, maneuverability, and speed capabilities. Determining what sailing characteristics are vital to you will help narrow down your choices.

Step 7: Visit Boat Shows and Charters Get up close and personal with potential candidates by attending boat shows or arranging charters if available. This hands-on approach lets you physically inspect aspects like cabin layout, storage space, cockpit ergonomics, ventilation systems – all essential comfort factors during your sailing adventures. It also gives you an opportunity to speak with experts who may offer valuable insights based on their experience.

Step 8: Test Sail Before You Commit Just as test driving a car before purchasing is crucial, taking a potential two-person sailboat out for a spin is highly recommended! This trial run allows you to assess how the boat handles on water given your skill level while getting acquainted with its responsiveness and overall feel. Don’t rush this step; take your time experimenting various weather conditions before making your final decision.

By following these step-by-step guidelines with keen attention to detail, you’ll be well-equipped to choose the perfect two-person sailboat tailored to your specific requirements. Remember, it’s not just the destination that counts but also relishing the journey alongside your sailing partner in a boat that embodies both safety and adventure. Bon voyage!

Exploring the Benefits and Challenges of Sailing with a Partner

Are you a sailing enthusiast who has always dreamed of embarking on seafaring adventures with a partner? Sailing with a partner can offer a plethora of benefits, from increased safety to shared experiences and memories. However, it is essential to be aware of the unique challenges that may arise when navigating the open waters together.

One of the undeniable perks of sailing with a partner is the enhanced sense of safety it provides. Having another person onboard means there are two sets of eyes scanning for potential dangers or hazards. This allows for quicker reactions in emergency situations and an extra level of assurance during rough weather conditions. Additionally, splitting responsibilities such as navigation, sail handling, and docking minimizes the chances of errors due to fatigue or stress.

Beyond safety concerns, sailing with a partner offers countless opportunities for bonding and creating cherished memories. Exploring new destinations hand in hand while experiencing all the beauty nature has to offer creates an unparalleled closeness between partners. From watching breathtaking sunsets on deck to snorkeling in crystal-clear waters; these shared adventures strengthen your relationship and provide lifelong stories to reminisce upon.

Moreover, having a sailing partner enables strategic decision-making based on their different skill set, knowledge, or perspective on nautical matters. As each individual brings their unique strengths and expertise to the table, problem-solving becomes more efficient and versatile. Deciding how best to tack against strong winds or determining alternative routes based on changing weather patterns become joint ventures that foster teamwork.

While there are undoubtedly numerous advantages to sailing as a duo, it’s crucial not to overlook the potential challenges that emerge when your romantic or personal relationship extends onto turbulent waters. Communication skills are put to test under pressure as disagreements regarding navigation choices or sail adjustments may persistently arise. Effective communication becomes key to preventing conflicts from escalating and ensuring both parties feel heard and valued.

Another challenge faced by couples who indulge in sailing is space management aboard the vessel. Even though modern sailboats offer cabins and storage options, living in close quarters for extended periods can strain even the strongest relationships. Finding personal space or alone time becomes essential to maintaining individual identities and fostering a healthy dynamic.

Furthermore, it is imperative to be aware of potential divide in sailing competency between partners. If one has more experience or knowledge than the other, it could potentially create feelings of inadequacy or contribute to unequal distribution of responsibilities. To mitigate this challenge, regular training sessions or participation in joint sailing courses can help both partners develop their skills and confidence, ensuring a fair division of labor while on board.

Ultimately, exploring the benefits and challenges of sailing with a partner is an exciting endeavor that allows couples to deepen their connection while indulging in their passion for adventure. By recognizing the unique dynamics that arise at sea, acknowledging potential pitfalls, and proactively addressing them through effective communication and mutual understanding, couples can embark on a journey that will bring them closer together both on land and on water. So grab your loved one’s hand and set sail towards horizons unknown – the possibilities are vast when you’re navigating life’s oceans as a team.

Step-by-Step Instructions on Rigging and Sailing a Two Person Sailboat

Have you ever dreamt of gracefully gliding across the water, propelled only by the wind? Well, look no further, because in this blog post, we’re going to take you on a journey of rigging and sailing a two-person sailboat. Get ready to immerse yourself in the magical world of sailing as we break down each step for you.

Step 1: Choosing the Perfect Sailboat Before setting sail, it’s essential to select the right sailboat for your needs. Consider factors such as size, stability, and performance. For beginners, we recommend starting with a small dinghy or a keelboat that offers more stability. As you gain experience and confidence on the water, you can progress to larger sailboats with advanced features.

Step 2: Familiarizing Yourself with the Anatomy of Your Sailboat Every sailor should have a solid understanding of their boat’s anatomy. Get acquainted with terms like mast (the tall vertical pole that holds up the sails), boom (the horizontal pole that extends from the bottom of the mast), rudder (which controls direction), and mainsail (the primary sail). Knowing these elements will be crucial when rigging your boat.

Step 3: Preparing Your Boat for Rigging Now that you’ve chosen your sailboat and familiarized yourself with its parts let’s move on to rigging preparation. First things first—make sure your boat is securely tied up at the dock or anchored safely offshore before starting any rigging procedures.

Step 4: Stepping/Unstepping the Mast The next step is stepping or unstepping your mast—an exciting yet straightforward procedure! To step your mast, carefully raise it into an upright position using halyards and tackle systems. Once secure, fasten all stays and shrouds tightly to keep everything in place.

Unstepping requires reversing this process by detaching all stays and shrouds before gently lowering the mast. Properly securing all lines and fittings is crucial to prevent any accidental mishaps during sailing.

Step 5: Attaching Your Sails With your mast securely in place, it’s time to attach your sails to experience the exhilaration of harnessing the wind. Start by raising your mainsail using halyards, ensuring it reaches its full height. Then, secure the mainsheet (a line that controls the angle of the mainsail) to your boat’s boom.

Next, move on to attaching jibs or headsails (sails located forward of the mast). Hoist these sails using jib halyards and secure their sheets (lines controlling sail trim) accordingly.

Step 6: Setting Up Your Tiller and Rudder The tiller and rudder work together to steer your sailboat. Position the rudder blade into its housing at the stern of your boat. Connect a tiller extension or handle to increase steering control if necessary. Ensure all connections are secure before taking off!

Step 7: Launching Time Now that everything is rigged up and ready for action, it’s time for an adrenaline-pumped launch! Push away from shore or release your anchor if you’re already offshore—just ensure you have enough water depth for safe sailing.

Step 8: Understanding Wind Direction Understanding wind direction is crucial for navigating efficiently on a sailboat. Learn about apparent wind (the combination of true wind and wind caused by your boat’s motion), how it affects sail trimming, and adjust accordingly to maximize speed and stability.

Step 9: Sailing Techniques Congratulations! You’re now out on the open water with sails billowing in the breeze. Practice various sailing techniques such as tacking (changing direction against the wind), jibing (changing direction with the wind), adjusting sail trim, and balancing weight distribution for optimal performance.

Remember, sailing is both a skill and an art, and experience is the best teacher. The more you practice, the better sailor you’ll become!

So there you have it – step-by-step instructions on rigging and sailing a two-person sailboat. Now, all that’s left for you to do is gather your crew, embrace the wind, and set sail on your next unforgettable adventure!

FastCat12™ Catamaran Reviews

I did a ton of research before I pulled the trigger on this boat and it paid off. My first trip was in San Diego in mission bay and the boat was perfect. My self and father-in-law fished the bay for a week with no issues and were blown away how stable the boat was and received a ton of compliments. The 5hp mercury outboard compliments the boat.

I love my Seaeagle 12 Fast Cat. Use it almost everyday in Florida. Customer service is great. Had a valve leak and they sent me a box and had it back in a couple of weeks with shipping time. Just the right size if I need to deflate it and store it. Great ride and just a solid built boat.

Boat is really great. I got all the extras with electric pump, seats, bimini etc. Sets up pretty quick and easy. I went with an electric 83lbs thrust motor and batteries ( 24 volt). I can run for hours! Great to take on vacation with us. We have an RV and like to bring the golf cart and the boat once deflated takes up no room at all.

The unit fits all of our needs. It is very stable with two passengers. Plenty of room to carry a cooler. The sun shade does act like a sail in the wind but you just make the best of it. The electric motor allows one to do some fishing and not have to stay in one spot for any time. Overall, good quality, came in a timely manner and was fairly easy to assemble. It definitely takes two people to move around when inflated.

17 Sailboat Types Explained: How To Recognize Them

Ever wondered what type of sailboat you're looking at? Identifying sailboats isn't hard, you just have to know what to look for. In this article, I'll help you.

Every time I'm around a large number of sailboats, I look around in awe (especially with the bigger ones). I recognize some, but with most of them, I'll have to ask the owner. When they answer, I try to hide my ignorance. The words don't make any sense!

So here's a complete list with pictures of the most common sailboat types today. For each of them, I'll explain exactly where the name comes from, and how you can recognize it easily.

Gaff rigged white schooner

So here's my list of popular sailboat types, explained:

Bermuda sloop, sailing hydrofoil, dutch barge, chinese junk, square-rigged tall ship, in conclusion, how to recognize any sailboat.

Before we get started, I wanted to quickly explain what you should look for when you try to identify a sailboat.

The type of sailboat is always determined by one of these four things:

  • The type of hull
  • The type of keel
  • The number of masts
  • And the type of sails and rig

The hull is the boat's body. There are basically three hull types: monohull, catamaran, and trimaran. Simply said: do I see one hull, two hulls (catamaran) or three hulls (trimaran)? Most sailboats are monohulls.

Next, there is the keel type. The keel is the underwater part of the hull. Mostly, you won't be able to see that, because it's underwater. So we'll leave that for now.

The sail plan

The last factor is the number of masts and the sail plan. The sail plan, simply put, is the number of sails, the type of sails, and how the sails are mounted to the masts (also called rigging ).

Sailboat are mostly named after the sail plan, but occasionally, a sail type is thrown in there as well.

So now we know what to pay attention to, let's go and check out some sailboats!

Row of sailing dinghies in golden hour at the dock

Dinghies are the smallest and most simple sailboats around.

They are your typical training sailboats. Small boats with an open hull, with just one mast and one sail. Perfect for learning the ways of the wind.

On average, they are between 6 and 20 ft long. Mostly sailed single-handed (solo). There's no special rigging, just the mainsail. The mainsail is commonly a Bermuda (triangular) mainsail. Dinghies have a simple rudder stick and no special equipment or rigging.

Dinghies are great for learning how to sail. The smaller the boat, the better you feel the impact of your trim and actions.

How to recognize a sailing dinghy:

  • short (8ft)
  • one Bermuda sail
  • open hull design
  • rudder stick

Common places to spot them: lakes, near docks

Three Bermuda Sloops in bright blue water

If you'd ask a kid to draw a sailboat, she'll most probably draw this one. The Bermuda Sloop is the most popular and most common sailboat type today. You'll definitely recognize this one.

How to recognize a Bermuda Sloop:

  • triangular mainsail (called a Bermuda sail)
  • a foresail (also called the jib)
  • fore-and-aft rigged
  • medium-sized (12 - 50 ft)

Fore-and-aft rigged just means "from front to back". This type of rigging helps to sail upwind.

Any sailboat with one mast and two sails could still be a sloop. Even if the sails are another shape or rigged in another way. For example, here's a gaff-rigged sloop (more on the gaff rig later):

Gaff Rigged Sloop in white in front of coastline with flat

If you want to learn all about sail rigs, check out my full Guide to Understanding Sail Rig Types here. It has good infographics and explains it in more detail

The Bermuda sloop has a lot of advantages over other sailboat types (which is why it's so popular):

  • the Bermuda rig is very maneuverable and pretty fast in almost all conditions
  • it's really versatile
  • you can sail it by yourself without any problems
  • it's a simple setup

Common places to spot a sloop: everywhere. Smaller sloops are more common for inland waters, rivers, and lakes. Medium-sized and large sloops are very popular cruising boats.

Cutter motorsailor against sun in black and white

Cutters have one mast but three or more sails. Most cutters are Bermuda rigged, which means they look a lot like sloops.

How to recognize a cutter:

  • looks like a sloop
  • two or more headsails instead of one
  • commonly one mast
  • sometimes an extra mast with mainsail

Cutters have more sail area, which makes them faster, but also harder to sail single-handed. There's also more strain on the mast and rigging.

Common places to spot a cutter: everywhere. Cutters are very popular for cruising.

They mostly have a Bermuda rig, which means triangular sails. But there are also gaff cutters and naval cutters, and some have two masts.

Here's an example of a two-masted naval cutter with an extra gaff mainsail and top gaff:

Dutch naval cutter with top gaff sail

The Hydrofoil is a pretty new sailboat design. It's a racing sailboat with thin wing foils under the hull. These lift up the hull, out of the water, reducing the displacement to nearly zero. The foils create downforce and keep it from lifting off entirely.

This makes the hydrofoil extremely fast and also impressive.

The hydrofoil refers to the keel type. There are both monohull and multihull hydrofoils.

How to recognize a hydrofoil:

  • it flies above the waterline and has small fins

Common places to spot a hydrofoil: at racing events

Cruising catamaran at dock in blue waters

Famous catamaran: La Vagabonde from Sailing La Vagabonde

A catamaran is a type of cruising and racing multihull sailboat with two hulls. The hulls are always the same size.

Most catamarans have a standard Bermuda rig. The catamaran refers to the hull, so it can have any number of masts, sails, sail types and rig type.

How to recognize a catamaran:

  • any boat with two hulls is called a catamaran

Common places to spot catamarans: coastal waters, The Caribbean, shallow reefs

The advantages of a catamaran: Catamarans heel less than monohulls and are more buoyant. Because of the double hull, they don't need as deep a keel to be stable. They have a smaller displacement, making them faster. They also have a very shallow draft. That's why catamarans are so popular in the Caribbean, where there's lots of shallow water.

Catamarans are nearly impossible to capsize:

"Compared with a monohull, a cruising catamaran sailboat has a high initial resistance to heeling and capsize—a fifty-footer requires four times the force to initiate a capsize than an equivalent monohull." Source: Wikipedia

Trimaran in green-blue waves

How to recognize a trimaran:

  • any boat with three hulls is called a trimaran

Trimarans have three hulls, so it's a multi-hull design. It's mostly a regular monohull with two smaller hulls or floaters on the sides. Some trimarans can be trailered by winching in the auxiliary hulls, like this:

Extended trimaran hull

This makes them very suitable for long-term cruising, but also for regular docking. This is great for crowded areas and small berths, like in the Mediterranean. It sure is more cost-effective than the catamaran (but you also don't have the extra storage and living space!).

Common places to spot Trimarans: mostly popular for long-term cruising, you'll find the trimaran in coastal areas.

Gaff rigged white schooner

Gaffer refers to gaff-rigged, which is the way the sails are rigged. A gaff rig is a rectangular sail with a top pole, or 'spar', which attaches it to the mast. This pole is called the 'gaff'. To hoist the mainsail, you hoist this top spar with a separate halyard. Most gaffers carry additional gaff topsails as well.

Gaff rigs are a bit less versatile than sloops. Because of the gaff, they can have a larger sail area. So they will perform better with downwind points of sail. Upwind, however, they handle less well.

How to recognize a gaffer:

  • sail is rectangular
  • mainsail has a top pole (or spar)

Since a gaffer refers to the rig type, and not the mast configuration or keel type, all sailboats with this kind of rigging can be called 'gaffers'.

Common places to spot a gaffer: Gaffers are popular inland sailboats. It's a more traditional rig, being used recreationally.

White schooner with two headsails

Schooners used to be extremely popular before sloops took over. Schooners are easy to sail but slower than sloops. They handle better than sloops in all comfortable (cruising) points of sail, except for upwind.

How to recognize a schooner:

  • mostly two masts
  • smaller mast in front
  • taller mast in the back
  • fore-and-aft rigged sails
  • gaff-rigged mainsails (spar on top of the sail)

Common places to spot a schooner: coastal marinas, bays

Ketch with maroon sails

How to recognize a ketch:

  • medium-sized (30 ft and up)
  • smaller mast in back
  • taller mast in front
  • both masts have a mainsail

The ketch refers to the sail plan (mast configuration and type of rig). Ketches actually handle really well. The back mast (mizzenmast) powers the hull, giving the skipper more control. Because of the extra mainsail, the ketch has shorter masts. This means less stress on masts and rigging, and less heel.

Common places to spot a ketch: larger marinas, coastal regions

White yawl with two masts and blue spinnaker

How to recognize a yawl:

  • main mast in front
  • much smaller mast in the back
  • back mast doesn't carry a mainsail

The aft mast is called a mizzenmast. Most ketches are gaff-rigged, so they have a spar at the top of the sail. They sometimes carry gaff topsails. They are harder to sail than sloops.

The yawl refers to the sail plan (mast configuration and type of rig).

Common places to spot a yawl: they are not as popular as sloops, and most yawls are vintage sailboat models. You'll find most being used as daysailers on lakes and in bays.

Clipper with leeboards

Dutch Barges are very traditional cargo ships for inland waters. My hometown is literally littered with a very well-known type of barge, the Skutsje. This is a Frisian design with leeboards.

Skutsjes don't have a keel but use leeboards for stability instead, which are the 'swords' or boards on the side of the hull.

How to recognize a Dutch Barge:

  • most barges have one or two masts
  • large, wooden masts
  • leeboards (wooden wings on the side of the hull)
  • mostly gaff-rigged sails (pole on top of the sail, attached to mast)
  • a ducktail transom

2 person sailboat name

The clipper is one of the latest sailboat designs before steam-powered vessels took over. The cutter has a large cargo area for transporting cargo. But they also needed to be fast to compete with steam vessels. It's a large, yet surprisingly fast sailboat model, and is known for its good handling.

This made them good for trade, especially transporting valuable goods like tea or spices.

How to recognize a Clipper:

  • mostly three masts
  • square-rigged sails
  • narrow but long, steel hull

Common places to spot a clipper: inland waters, used as houseboats, but coastal waters as well. There are a lot of clippers on the Frisian Lakes and Waddenzee in The Netherlands (where I live).

Chinese Junk sailboat with red sails

This particular junk is Satu, from the Chesapeake Bay Area.

The Chinese Junk is an ancient type of sailboat. Junks were used to sail to Indonesia and India from the start of the Middle Ages onward (500 AD). The word junk supposedly comes from the Chinese word 'jung', meaning 'floating house'.

How to recognize a Chinese junk:

  • medium-sized (30 - 50 ft)
  • large, flat sails with full-length battens
  • stern (back of the hull) opens up in a high deck
  • mostly two masts (sometimes one)
  • with two mainsails, sails are traditionally maroon
  • lug-rigged sails

The junk has a large sail area. The full-length battens make sure the sails stay flat. It's one of the flattest sails around, which makes it good for downwind courses. This also comes at a cost: the junk doesn't sail as well upwind.

White cat boat with single gaff-rigged sail

The cat rig is a sail plan with most commonly just one mast and one sail, the mainsail.

Most sailing dinghies are cats, but there are also larger boats with this type of sail plan. The picture above is a great example.

How to recognize a cat rig:

  • smaller boats
  • mostly one mast
  • one sail per mast
  • no standing rigging

Cat-rigged refers to the rigging, not the mast configuration or sail type. So you can have cats with a Bermuda sail (called a Bermuda Cat) or gaff-rigged sail (called a Gaff Cat), and so on. There are also Cat Ketches and Cat Schooners, for example. These have two masts.

The important thing to know is: cats have one sail per mast and no standing rigging .

Most typical place to spot Cats: lakes and inland waters

Brig under sail with woodlands

Famous brig: HMS Beagle (Charles Darwin's ship)

A brig was a very popular type of small warship of the U.S. navy during the 19th century. They were used in the American Revolution and other wars with the United Kingdom. They carry 10-18 guns and are relatively fast and maneuverable. They required less crew than a square-rigged ship.

How to recognize a brig:

  • square-rigged foremast
  • mainmast square-rigged or square-rigged and gaff-rigged

2 person sailboat name

How to recognize a tall ship:

  • three or four masts
  • square sails with a pole across the top
  • multiple square sails on each mast
  • a lot of lines and rigging

Square-rigged ships, or tall ships, are what we think of when we think of pirate ships. Now, most pirate ships weren't actually tall ships, but they come from around the same period. They used to be built from wood, but more modern tall ships are nearly always steel.

Tall ships have three or four masts and square sails which are square-rigged. That means they are attached to the masts with yards.

We have the tall ship races every four years, where dozens of tall ships meet and race just offshore.

Most common place to spot Tall Ships: Museums, special events, open ocean

Trabaccolo with large yellow sails

This is a bonus type since it is not very common anymore. As far as I know, there's only one left.

The Trabaccolo is a small cargo ship used in the Adriatic Sea. It has lug sails. A lug rig is a rectangular sail, but on a long pole or yard that runs fore-and-aft. It was a popular Venetian sailboat used for trade.

The name comes from the Italian word trabacca , which means tent, referring to the sails.

How to recognize a Trabaccolo:

  • wide and short hull
  • sails look like a tent

Most common place to spot Trabaccolo's: the Marine Museum of Cesenatico has a fully restored Trabaccolo.

So, there you have it. Now you know what to look for, and how to recognize the most common sailboat types easily. Next time you encounter a magnificent sailboat, you'll know what it's called - or where to find out quickly.

The Channel from the coast of northern France.

One person dead and two missing in Channel boat incident

Officials say 179 people trying to cross Channel were rescued after four French-led operations

One person has died and two others are missing in the Channel after an incident involving a small boat, French rescue services have said.

According to the Préfecture maritime Manche et mer du Nord, four French-led rescue operations took place in the Channel on Wednesday, coordinated by the regional operational surveillance and rescue of Gris-Nez.

Officials said 179 people trying to cross the Channel were rescued.

A British government spokesperson said on Wednesday: “We can confirm there has been an incident in the Channel involving a small boat in French waters.

“French authorities are leading the response and investigation.”

The Préfecture maritime said the region’s rescue operation was informed of “several boats in difficulty off the coast of the Pas-de-Calais”.

A boat was sighted off the coast at Wissant but on inspection no signal was given by those on board that it was in difficulty and it continued its journey. A second boat was then found in difficulty and asking for help nearby, and 55 people were taken to Boulogne-sur-Mer.

But by midday, the people on the first boat asked to be rescued and 56 people were helped. Those on board said three people on board had fallen into the sea earlier in the morning. A search operation with a helicopter and boat was launched.

“A first person was located, unconscious and could not be revived on board,” the local French authorities said. “The person unfortunately died at port. Weather conditions made the search for two remaining missing people difficult. The prosecutor’s office in Boulogne-sur-Mer has opened an investigation.”

Meanwhile, another small boat was flagged off the coast of Sainte-Cécile and 14 people were rescued. The French authorities said others on board refused the assistance being offered. The risk of forcing people to get on to rescue boats at sea was considered too high by rescue services and the people refusing help remained on board the small boat.

At the same time, another boat was found in difficulty off the Pas-de-Calais coast and 54 people were rescued.

Responding to the news reports, Enver Solomon, the CEO of the Refugee Council, said: “Our thoughts go out to the families of those affected by the tragic loss of life in the English Channel this afternoon and to all those who valiantly answered the distress call.

“This is yet another avoidable human tragedy. Men, women and children from countries such as Afghanistan are risking their lives in the Channel as a direct consequence of safe routes being so limited and ineffective.

“There will be more deaths unless the government rethinks its approach. Instead of the unlawful and costly Rwanda plan, we need a plan to provide sanctuary for those fleeing persecution, violence and torture without having to take dangerous journeys by expanding options for family reunion, introducing refugee visas and putting in place an agreement with the French government to give people a fair hearing and treat them with dignity and humanity.”

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: “HM Coastguard is conducting a search and rescue mission relating to an incident earlier today that occurred in the French search and rescue region involving a missing person from a small boat in the English Channel.”

This week, Home Office figures showed that more than 2,000 people have arrived in the UK so far this year after crossing the strait between England and France .

The number of arrivals is 32% lower than the total recorded this time last year (2,953) but 49% higher than the total at this stage in 2022 (1,482). 29,437 people arrived in the UK after making the crossing in 2023, down 36% on a record 45,774 arrivals in 2022.

The Home Office said there were no new arrivals on Tuesday or Monday this week, but 290 asylum seekers arrived across five boats on Sunday.

Israel will allow a similar number of worshippers into Jerusalem's al Aqsa Mosque during the first week of Ramadan as in previous years, a statement from the prime minister's office read.

The decision was agreed with top Israeli security officials during a meeting on preparations ahead of the Muslim fasting month which begins on Sunday, without providing a specific number.

"During the first week of Ramadan a similar number of worshippers will be allowed on the Temple Mount as in previous years," the statement said, using the Jewish name for the site.

"Every week a security assessment will be conducted and a decision will be made accordingly," it added.

The mosque has been the centre of much controversy, with Israel being accused of severely limiting the number of worshippers who can access the Muslim holy site.

At 12.30am yesterday, the Swiss-owned MSC SKY II, a merchant container ship, was attacked and hit by a Houthi missile attack near Aden.

There are reports that two anti-ship missiles were fired at the ship, with one hitting it and one falling into the sea.

It follows the successful Houthi attack on the Rubymar which sank at the weekend.

From a military perspective, the latest attacks are interesting.

When the Houthis started their campaign against merchant shipping in the Red Sea they launched a series of attacks but with limited success.

Since then, the Houthis will have consumed a significant quantity of their stocks of anti-ship missiles, and they have also been subject to a series of attacks by the US and UK targeting the missiles, launchers and associated radars.

However, despite this effort to degrade the Houthi anti-ship capability, the effectiveness of their attacks appears to be improving.

This would imply that the Houthis are getting military assistance with the employment and guidance of the missiles, which is very likely to come from the missile manufacturers and suppliers - Iran.

Hamas has urged the US to stop sending Israel weapons hours after airdropping aid into Gaza in a joint operation.

"We say to Washington, what is more important than sending aid [to Gaza] is stopping its supply of weapons to Israel," Osama Hamdan said during a media briefing in Beirut, Lebanon.

Hamdan also repeated Hamas's claims that no exchange of hostages can occur without a complete cessation of hostilities.

"In the past two days, the [Hamas] movement presented its position on the proposal put forward by the brotherly Qatari and Egyptian mediators. We reaffirmed our conditions for a ceasefire - a full pullout from the Strip and the return of the displaced from areas they left, in particular in the north," he said.

This comes amid a back-and-forth over who is in control of ceasefire negotiations - with both sides claiming the ball is in the other's court.

An Israeli strike killed a mother, father and their son in the southern Lebanese town of Houla earlier today, the mayor Shakib Koteish told the Reuters news agency.

"It was a three-floor house, now it's all the way collapsed and the rescue workers are still working to see who is left under it," he said.

Israel has not commented on the claims, which are not independently verified.

Earlier, Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant said the continuing tension with Iran-backed Hezbollah at the border with Lebanon was moving the situation nearer to escalation.

"We are committed to the diplomatic process, however, Hezbollah's aggression is bringing us closer to a critical point in the decision-making regarding our military activities in Lebanon," he said.

Iran-backed, Lebanon-based Hezbollah, which means "Party of God" in Arabic, openly calls for the destruction of the "Zionist regime in Palestine" and is deemed a terror organisation by most Western powers.

But the violence has largely been contained to areas at the border, shaped by what observers have called unwritten rules of engagement between adversaries that have long threatened each other with catastrophic damage in the event of war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously warned that Beirut would be turned "into Gaza" if Hezbollah started an all-out war.

Joe Biden has repeated US claims that a ceasefire deal is solely "in the hands of Hamas".

"It's in the hands of Hamas right now," he said.

"The Israelis have been cooperating. We need a ceasefire."

His secretary of state Antony Blinken also said earlier there is an opportunity to achieve an immediate ceasefire, but that the onus was on Hamas.

A senior Hamas official denied this, claiming that "it is now in the hands of the Americans, if they are serious about achieving a ceasefire before Ramadan, to exercise enough pressure on the Israelis" (see 2.48pm post).

Much of today's updates have been around the chronic lack of crucial aid inside Gaza - with many international partners calling on Israel to do more to get more in.

But can they do more? And perhaps more pertinently, will they?

Our data and forensics correspondent Tom Cheshire has taken a closer look...

Today's joint operation between Egypt, France, the US and Jordan to drop humanitarian aid into Gaza was the largest operation of its kind to date, according to a statement carried on the Jordanian state-run Petra news agency.

Three Jordanian C-130s delivered the aid, along with three US planes, one from Egypt and another from France, the statement said.

Relief supplies from the World Food Programme were among the deliveries.

Jordan has conducted 28 airdrop missions and another 15 joint operations since Israel's war with Hamas began 7 October.

Israeli minister Benny Gantz will meet with US defence secretary Lloyd Austin today, the Pentagon has announced.

Mr Gantz, a political rival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but member of the war cabinet, made headlines last week after announcing his decision to travel to the US for talks reportedly without the approval of Mr Netanyahu.

Former Pentagon adviser Jasmine el Gamal described the move as "a huge slap in the face for Benjamin Netanyahu", with Mr Gantz meeting with US vice president Kamala Harris yesterday.

Israel's military is drawing up plans to open a new crossing to deliver humanitarian aid directly into northern Gaza, two Israeli officials have told our partner network NBC News.

The crossing is expected to be in the area around Kibbutz Be'eri, the officials said, though both stressed that plans were not finalised and could still change.

Be'eri was one of the hardest hit communities during the 7 October attacks after Hamas gunmen stormed the area and wrought havoc.

The plan for a new crossing comes after intense US pressure on Israel to get more aid into Gaza, amid growing signs of famine in the northern half of the strip.

Israel controls all crossings into Gaza apart from Rafah, located on Egypt's border, which it monitors. Rafah and one other crossing, Kerem Shalom in southern Israel, are open for aid - subject to inspections.

FWC: 1 dead, 1 injured in St. Petersburg boat crash

2 person sailboat name

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said one person died after a boat hit a dock in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. Sunday, FWC and other agencies responded to reports of a boating accident near Bayshore Boulevard in St. Petersburg.

Officials said that preliminary information indicates an 18-foot boat with two people on board hit a dock, and both were thrown from the boat into the water. According to St. Pete Fire Rescue, both were 15-year-old boys.

The operator of the boat was rescued from the water, and authorities searched for the other person, who was found by a good samaritan and a St. Petersburg Police officer.

Both people were taken to a local hospital.

Collin Moorefield, the passenger in the boat, later died due to his injuries. Christian Tharakan, 15, of St. Petersburg, who was operating the boat, had non-life-threatening injuries.

“We would like to express our condolences to the Moorefield family and ask that the public give the family space during this difficult time,” said Major Evan Laskowski, Southwest Regional Commander.   “As a father myself, I can only begin to imagine the pain they are experiencing right now. I want them to know we are thinking and praying for them during this time.”

Alexis Carlon, who lives near where the accident happened, said she was about to go for a walk on a dock when she heard a loud banging noise and said she knew something was wrong when she saw the boat begin to make its way out into the bay unmanned.

"We saw the boat basically go out into the bay and do a big circle, and it was heading straight for our dock," said Carlon. "It then veered suddenly as it was about to make impact and ran into our seawall instead of the dock. My husband jumped our fence and stopped the boat. He was able to pull the throttle down.”

Carlon and other people who live in the area shared how neighbors quickly jumped into action to help after the accident.

“My heart just goes out to the parents and the families of those boys," said Carlon.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is currently handling the investigation with assistance from the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The Pressure of Picking Sailboat Names

  • By Gary Jobson
  • Updated: December 13, 2011

Sailing World: October 2009

Coming up with sailboat names is always a challenge, especially for anxious new owners. It’s an undertaking that should be handled with great care. Sailboat names, as trivial as it may seem at first, define the essence of a boat, its owner, and often its legacy. As I travel around the waterfront I am sometimes intrigued by boat names. Other times I’m mystified. I’ve named many boats over the years, and the approach that I always take is to first make a list of categories: patriotic, geographic, legacy, bold, whimsical, from literature, movies, science, lifestyle, and a person to honor. A dictionary is a good place to start, but for inspiration there are lists of sailboat names found in yacht club registries, Lloyd’s Registry, and history books, to name a few.

The graphic presentation and typeface should fit the word or words being used, and for this, a graphic designer will be your best asset. It is nice to have a unique look or logo that might also be used on a spinnaker or the hull. I particularly enjoy seeing boats that coordinate hull, sail, and crew clothing graphics. All professional sports teams work at making bold statements, and so, too, should we. A club’s burgee and hailing port can also be integrated into the graphics as a way to promote your local sailing scene at away regattas.

Naming a boat can be more complicated when partners are involved, so be patient, the process can take months. I was once part of a group of four owners trying to name a boat, and we never could agree. Once we reached a deadlock, we decided to have an outside party come up with a name. It worked.

Many owners carry over a name from one boat to the next, which helps create a history that new and old sailors can appreciate. Two high-profile owners from England, for example, have owned more than 30 boats in their careers— Yeoman and Oystercatcher —and most everyone on the Solent instantly associates these boats with their owners and the many crew that have crossed their decks. Tom Hill’s latest Titan is No. 15 in the Titan pedigree. That’s a mighty impressive run.

Legacy names prevail long after their heydays. Several come quickly to mind: Merrythought , Gem , Nitemare , Palawan , Thunderhead , Kodiak , Ondine , Kialoa , Donnybrook , Matador , and Pyewacket . Other owners have themes for their boats: one of my favorites is that of Jim Swartz, who named his boats afer James Bond characters like Moneypenny and 007 . George David has had fun with Idler and Rambler . Two-word names seem to add to the importance of a yacht: Running Tide ,_ Northern Light_, Stars & Stripes , and Blue Yankee are boats that come readily to mind.

There is often the question of whether a boat should be renamed when a new owner acquires it. I believe a new name isappropriate. Ted Turner’s Tenacious was originally named Dora IV afer the wife of its original owner. Ted was a ladies’ man, but that would never fly. Plus, Tenacious better suited his dynamic personality. Ted owned two boats named Tenacious .

I have named my last three boats in honor of great yacht designers of the past. I owned two boats named Whirlwind , a name that aptly describes my lifestyle, but more importantly was a tribute to L. Francis Herreshoff, who, in 1930, designed a double-ended J Class boat of the same name. The crew only won one race that America’s Cup season, but they kept trying. My first Whirlwind was an L. Francis Herreshoff-designed knockabout from 1932, the second was a Sabre 402. My most recent boat, a NYYC Swan 42, is Mustang , a name I borrowed in honor of Rod Stephens’ series of personal yachts.

Over the years, trends have greatly influenced the names of legendary boats. The 12-Meter era featured bold names such as Vim , Valiant , Intrepid , and Courageous . Then there was the patriotic era of the America’s Cup, with names like Stars & Stripes , Freedom , Liberty , Australia II , New Zealand , and America3 . The exponent following Bill Koch’s America3 was a fun nod to science.

The America’s Cup has since been taken over by corporate branding; this is a trend I hope goes away so we can get back to more memorable names. Thomas Lipton challenged for the America’s Cup in part to promote his Lipton tea, and yet he called his boats Shamrock for good luck. He was Irish, after all. During the Great Depression, owner Harold Vanderbilt named his J Class boat Rainbow , letting the public know that brighter days were ahead.

Geography provides relevant names for boats. Olin Stephens raced the legendary Finnestere , named after a point of land in Spain. We had Easterner , a 12-Meter, from the Eastern YC. There is, of course, Atlantic , which set a record in the 1905 Transatlantic Race under skipper Charlie Barr. Even the founder’s of the New York YC were smart in naming their revolutionary schooner America before sending it to challenge the British.

Today, it seems, there are many offbeat names attached to boats. In my hometown of Annapolis, one Etchells sailor was so grateful for the use of household funds to buy a boat he smartly named it My Wife’s the Best . And on the flip side, who can forget the famous 50-footer named FUJIMO ? If you haven’t heard the origin of that name, ask around. Perhaps it’s a story best told on the rail.

Be careful with some names that might be too boastful if things do not work out. For example, in 1958, the 12-Meter Columbia was originally going to be called Swift , but the syndicate decided against it in case the boat was not as fast as its name implied. Defender was another name that appeared twice for the America’s Cup (1895 and 1983). Perhaps the name was a little too presumptuous. Aggressive names can be dangerous, too. In 1987, the America II syndicate nicknamed its boat The Eliminator , which sounded good until it was eliminated from the trials earlier than expected.

A name can be made up as well. In 2003, Ernesto Bertarelli showed up with Alinghi , a curious name that rolled off the tongue nicely. Today the word is a brand name of its own, but at first it seemed kind of whimsical. It is a word that Bertarelli made up in his youth. Later, he created a definition for it: “joy, dreams, a certain lightness, but also speed and action.” After the multihull challenge we are scheduled to see for the 33rd America’s Cup, I wonder if Alinghi will take on a different meaning.

Movies and entertainment can provide the inspiration for a name, but be careful of trendy names that may fade in meaning as the years roll by. Still, they can be playful. I recently cruised on a 90-foot Fife built in 1914 named Sumurun . The name comes from a popular English play from the period. Sumurun was the mistress of the Sheik in a play.

During a recent Newport to Bermuda Race, I made note in an Internet report that there were some strange names of boats in the race: Zippity Doo Dah ,_ Nasty Medicine_, The Cone of Silence , Fat City Too , Better Than…. , and Euro Trash Girl . It’s great to see there are owners who appreciate fun and interesting names such as these.

Once you decide upon a name, make the most if it with crew clothing, stationary, and maybe even stickers for the car. A well-named boat can quickly attract a following, and soon crew might be sailing for the experience and the gear. People like to name lots of things. We give nicknames to our friends and foes, and we name our children and our pets. In some places, like Bermuda and Nantucket, people even name their houses. Boats are special and deserve good names that fit the owner’s persona.

Boy, 15, dies in St. Petersburg boat crash

  • Jack Prator Times staff

A 15-year-old boy has died after a boat crash in St. Petersburg Sunday evening.

Collin Moorefield died from his injuries in a local hospital, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced Monday afternoon.

Christian Tharakan, also 15, was driving the boat when he struck a dock. The collision ejected both boys from the boat, according to the state agency.

Tharakan’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, authorities said.

First responders received a 911 call at 5:43 p.m. that a boat struck a dock near 4039 Bayshore Blvd. NE. in Shore Acres, said Capt. Garth Swingle, a spokesperson for St. Petersburg Fire Rescue, in a news conference Sunday night.

Tharakan was recovered from the water first, before Moorefield was found soon after by a good Samaritan and a St. Petersburg police officer, authorities said.

“I can tell you that the neighbors came to help,” Swingle said Sunday. “It was pretty heartfelt that that was happening.”

After it struck the dock, the boat came to a stop four houses down, near another dock where a bystander turned off the motor and tied up the boat.

The front of the boat, an 18-foot Key West with a single motor, sustained minor to moderate damage, Swingle said.

It was unclear if the boys were wearing life vests at the time of the crash.

Florida law requires anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, to complete a boating education course and have a boating education ID card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or more. It was unclear Monday if either of the boys had a card.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is leading the investigation of the incident and said additional information will be limited until it concludes.

“We would like to express our condolences to the Moorefield family and ask that the public give the family space during this difficult time,” said Maj. Evan Laskowski, Southwest Regional Commander for the state wildlife agency, in a news release. “As a father myself, I can only begin to imagine the pain they are experiencing right now. I want them to know we are thinking and praying for them during this time.”

Ukraine said it sank a $65 million warship that Russia planned to use for an antiaircraft missile system

  • Ukraine said it destroyed another Russian ship in the Black Sea using sea drones.
  • The Sergei Kotov patrol vessel, part of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, cost $65 million, Ukraine said.
  • An intelligence official said Russia was planning to put an antiaircraft missile system on the ship.

Insider Today

Ukrainian military intelligence said a $65 million Russian warship was the latest to be sunk in the Black Sea.

The Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine said Tuesday that the vessel, the Sergei Kotov, was destroyed overnight.

The ship was worth about $65 million, it said.

It added that a Ukrainian special unit attacked the Black Sea Fleet vessel in cooperation with Ukraine's navy and the Ministry of Digital Transformation.

An intelligence source told Ukraine's Kyiv Post that Magura V5 drones struck the ship while it was patrolling in the Kerch Strait and that it sank.

Andrii Yusov, a Ukrainian intelligence official, told Radio Free Europe that Russia was planning to put an antiaircraft missile system on the ship.

Ukraine shared footage of what's said to be the attack.

The hit, if confirmed, would be another victory for Ukraine in the Black Sea, despite it not having any warships of its own .

The Sergei Kotov is a patrol ship operating as part of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, according to The Kyiv Independent .

Ukraine has been targeting Russian ships since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 , damaging, destroying, or sinking many of them.

Ukraine has targeted Russian vessels with commando raids , missiles, and sea drones , including ones it developed itself .

In December, the UK's defense minister said : "Over the past 4 months 20% of Russia's Black Sea Fleet has been destroyed."

Russia has moved many of its vessels away from Sevastopol , its major Black Sea port in Crimea, to areas farther away from Ukraine.

Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in February 2014. Ukraine has repeatedly vowed to take it back and has launched long-range attacks on infrastructure there.

What Are Small Sailboats Called?

What Are Small Sailboats Called? | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Jacob Collier

August 30, 2022

Sailboats, whether in deep bluewater or for casual use, have a wide variety of capabilities. They can differ in size, with some being fairly small sailboats.

Most boats are classified by name in a specific category for what they can accomplish. You might have thought, what are small sailboats called?

A small sailboat is called a dinghy and is usually between 8 to 15 feet in length, with some being slightly larger. These sailboats vary in how they are used, but can either be powered by a motor, sailed with the use of a removable mast, or moved with oars.

In addition, you might see some of these boats being used with larger vessels as a lifeboat. Other people have primarily used them to sail for recreational use and fully harness the wind for a relaxed time at sea.

According to the National Maritime College, dinghies are considered sailing vessels regardless if they have motors or not. These can be further separated into motor sailing and regular sailing.

Table of contents

‍ Why Are Small Sailboats Called Dinghies?

The name dinghies has origins dating back to the Bengali and Hindi language . In addition, it has similar ties to the East Indies around the 1800’s.

In Hindi, the word dingy means small boat. As for other languages like Sanskrit, the term means wooden trough. Over the years, the combination of those languages with English helped form the word dinghy.

These boats were used to move about cargo and passengers in India during the 1800’s. Today they are used for both recreational use or to help out larger vessels with the same idea in mind as India had used it.

Is Sailing on a Dinghy Different?

Dinghy boats are classified as a monohull, unlike multi- hulled boats that could have two or more hulls manufactured together. Due to the unique size of dinghies, they are easier to produce.

Dinghy sailing is a bit different than your traditional bluewater sailing or larger boat vessels. You have to utilize the power of the wind to help guide you through the water.

Some of the designs will allow for speed, but other models are geared for a relaxing time at sea. You will usually see these types of boats near inland waters, but more experienced sailors could use them in rougher waters.

Due to their unique size, dinghies are typically lighter and only require one or a few people depending on the size. For larger ones around 20 feet, it might require up to five people to help move or navigate.

Larger dinghies are sometimes confused with keelboats, but dinghy sailboats do not have a keel underneath. These boats also do not have a ballast to add weight, so they are easier to turn over than other traditional boats.

Sailing with the use of a dinghy might be confused with other water sports like windsurfing. Both use smaller boats and need the wind, but windsurfing requires you to stand on the boat and move from one side to the next to help capture the wind.

As for typical dinghy use, you will be sitting down in or on the boat. This allows you to fully concentrate on the sailing aspect of it.

How to Learn Dinghy Sailing?

Sailing on a dinghy is going to require patience and you are going to get wet. Most sailing will avoid the water on deck, where dinghies put you right there in the action.

You have to understand that the sails are going to provide the boat power. Utilizing the wind at the right angle is going to be key to long term success.

If you are a first time dinghy user, it is best to try it out on a gentle day with some wind. It is also easier to test it out on calmer waters, rather than launching out into deep water.

You have every right to buy one and go try it out yourself, but it might be worth the time and money to try someone else’s dinghy first. In that case, you could look into trying out a sailing school near you that specializes in getting you started.

If you decide to go the school route, just make sure you are trying out a dinghy that is going to be similar to the one you would want. This way you know first hand how to move your size of a boat.

These courses do not last long either, especially if you are a quick learner. Within the afternoon, you should have the basics down and in just a few sessions you will be sailing like a professional.

What to Wear and Why Dinghy Sail?

As with all sailing, your safety is going to be priority in anything that you do. This means wearing buoyancy aids and potentially a helmet.

You will need to wear clothes that you do not mind getting wet. This could be quick dry material or other water gear that is best for this.

You might also consider wearing water sailing gloves, since you will be handling wet and salty ropes the entire time. If you do it often enough, you might not need the gloves.

Learning how to dinghy sail is a unique opportunity like no other in the sailing realm. No matter your age, if you can learn the basics then you can move about in various water conditions.

You will be getting a workout when using a dinghy, as you will have to constantly adjust the sails while also shifting around. In calmer conditions, it will be easier of course to get used to these movements and build confidence.

Dinghy sailing requires quite a bit of focus, especially since it does not take much to flip these boats over. Any changes in wind or water and you will need to think it through quickly.

This requires you to always be ready and not complacent with your environment. This is why many enjoy dinghy sailing, as it takes discipline to master this type of sailing.
