What To Pack For Nepal | Packing List With 46 Things To Bring

travelling bag price in nepal

Nepal is a place of extreme environments and extreme weather which can change at any moment. What to pack for Nepal varies depending on where you plan to go. Therefore it’s always a good idea to do some research before you travel to Nepal to ensure you have the right gear on your packing list.

If you are planning on trekking The Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang Valley , Annapurna Panorama, Poonhill , Mohare Danda, Upper Mustang, around Manaslu, Helambu, Tilicho Base Camp, Namche Bazaar Trek and Solu Khumbu this Nepal packing list is perfect for you.

Depending on where you are traveling in Nepal you might need a lot of gear or might need very little as there are so many contrasting climates and different facilities, think about amenities to charging points for electronics while at some places there is not even electricity. If you are just hanging out in Kathmandu and or Pokhara then a standard travel/backpacking packing list is fine.

Expected temperatures per region in Nepal:

Kathmandu has a relatively stable climate with temperatures dropping to as low as 1 degree Celsius in winter while the warmer months see temperatures push the high 30’s. A rain jacket is a must in Kathmandu with unexpected down pours of rain. If you only stick around the areas in Nepal, you can go by with a standard backpacking packing list.

Chitwan sees a lot of rain in the monsoon season along with decent all year round temperatures with the lowest temperatures dropping to 5 degrees Celsius in the cooler months and high 30’s during the warmer months. Definitely add a rain jacket to your things to bring to Nepal list, it will be your best friend in Chitwan for sure.

Pokhara has the best all year-round temperatures with beautiful summers ranging from 22 to 35 degrees Celsius. In the winter temperatures can drop to -2 to 15 degrees Celsius. Planning on just hanging around Pokhara? A rain jacket and jumper are a must on your Nepal packing list, warm winter clothes are not really recommended.

Everest Base Camp

Given the altitude of Everest Base Camp, temperatures in the colder months can plummet to as low as -20 degrees Celsius. At any time of the year, it can snow at EBC so cold weather gear is a must. A Nepal trekking packing list looks slightly different as you can endure extreme temperatures.

Annapurna Base Camp

Annapurna Base Camp is a lot like EBC so expect freezing cold conditions all year round. Cold weather gear is always needed here. I did the Annapurna Basecamp trekking in 2013 and at the highest point I was wearing all the clothes listed in this packing list for Nepal! LOL :)

Langtang Valley

Temperatures at this Nepal off the beaten destination are much milder than the popular ABC and EBC treks. In June 2019 I did the Langtang Valley trek and brought most of the things listed in this Nepal packing list.

What is needed to travel to Nepal?

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months upon entry then you are basically sorted! All European countries, USA, Canada and Australia can enter Nepal with a visa on arrival ranging from 15 to 90 days.

Do you need vaccinations for traveling to Nepal?

There is no need to show anyone that you have specific vaccinations when you travel to Nepal, but it is recommended to have the standard shots for childhood diseases: Diphtheria, Tetanus, Mumps, Measles and Rubella. Injections against Hepatitis A and B are recommended, but not necessary, the same for Rabius.

Is there Malaria in Nepal? Yes officially there is and you will find some tourists that take Malaria pills when traveling to Nepal. The risk of getting infected with Malaria is very small and almost non-existing especially in the tourist destinations in Nepal and the major trekking areas in Nepal. Therefore I would not recommend you taking Malaria pills.

So far I have spend 6 weeks traveling in Nepal and have been twice. My first time in 2013 and my second time in June 2019. Nepal is one of my favorite countries and also one of the best places to backpack in the world .

Stay connected when traveling to Nepal

If your phone is unlocked then you can easily  buy a tourist prepaid sim card for Nepal . The best place to buy a sim card on arrival in Nepal is at the airport. Check out my guide for buying a sim card at Kathmandu Airport . However, the easiest way to get connected when traveling to Nepal is an e-sim card. Find out everything you need to know about e-sim cards for Nepal in the links above.

Hiring a guide/porter

Having a guide on your trek proves to be a lot better than without one. Guides provide extra knowledge on the area, the mountains and can translate with ease. Although a guide will cost extra, it will be worth it at the end of the day.

Having a porter isn’t necessary but if you want to enjoy your trek without the hassle of a weighty bag, a porter may be of use. Just remember porters are people and can carry a maximum of 15 to 20 kilograms so please don’t carry items that will be of no use on your trek.

46 Things to bring to Nepal

To organize your Nepal packing list I divided all things to bring into 6 categories:

  • What to wear in Nepal
  • Toiletries and medication packing list

Travel essentials for Nepal

Electronics for traveling to Nepal

What to Wear in Nepal

Trekking in Nepal is on everyone’s bucketlist and I often get a lot of questions about what to pack for a trekking. At any time of the year, I recommend you to bring these things for trekking in Nepal:

1. Hiking Boots

A quick word of advice on hiking boots, I think they are overrated! :)

Hiking in the Nepal is seriously tough on your feet and the last thing you will want to do is wear a pair of cheap hiking boots that you just bought in Thamel. At least that is what everyone says! But then look at me… trekking in Nepal in flipflops!

nepal packing list items

So who am I to tell you that hiking boots are one of the Nepal travel essentials? :)

Anyway 99% of the people that go trekking in Nepal bring hiking boots, totally understandable! Ideally it’s best to have worn in your boots 2 to 3 weeks before setting out on the trail. This ensures that your feet become accustomed to the materials in the boot while adjustments can be made with sock thickness and size.

Most of my trekking friends go with these hiking boots .

2. Running shoes

travelling bag price in nepal

If you decided to go trekking in Nepal Traveltomtom style you save a lot of space, because hiking boots are not part of my packinglist for Nepal.

3. Havaianas

When buying a buff, make sure the material is breathable as the last thing you will want is a buff that is not breathable.

5. Sunglasses

Bring good sunnies! Apart from sunglasses stopping dust and light from hurting your eyes they are also great in cold and windy conditions especially at altitude. The higher you go, the more intense U.V (ultraviolet) light will be on your eyes and this is where sunglasses come in very handy. Make sure you buy proper sunglasses with UV filters before you travel to Nepal.

6. Down Jacket

A down jacket might be the most expensive item on this list but it will damn sure keep you warm! Down jackets are basically filled with feathers or a puffy material that acts as an insulator to keep out all of the cold air. These jackets are waterproof and an essential item on your Nepal trekking packing list.

7. Wind Jacket

Wind jackets are perfect for those cold and windy days trekking in Nepal. The material on a wind jacket is designed to bounce off wind and keep you a bit warmer however, make sure you have another layer underneath the wind jacket as it won’t serve the same purpose as a down jacket. These wind stoppers are my favorite and easy to pack.

8. Couple Pair of socks

Never trust the weather forecast when trekking in Nepal. I would always pack 3 pairs of socks minimum for a 7 day trek. Having clean and dry socks is so crucial as there is nothing worse than trudging around in wet/damp socks. If that happens go the Traveltomtom way: on flipflops! :) Here are some thermal socks I use in case you fancy them.

9. Enough pair of underwear

You will always have room for extra underwear when on the trail so you can pack up to 10 pairs if need. Underwear are like socks, fresh is best and to me an essential item on my Nepal trekking packing list.

10. Thermal underlays

Thermals are probably my best tip for trekking in Nepal. They keep you warm when hiking in cold conditions. I would always carry one or two long sleeve tops when hiking in the Himalaya or anywhere else in the world. Thermal underwear are thin and light weight and provide great warmth, probably one of my favorite travel items when I go to colder countries.

11. Dry bag

Especially when carrying around expensive electronic items a dry bag comes in handy! I will always have one on me in case I need to put items in there if a storm approaches or a creek or river crossing is required. Here is a set of 3 dry bags , including one for your phone.

12. Hiking shorts

A good pair of hiking shorts or pants is an essential Nepal travel item, even if that means purchasing one pair just for the 7 days on the trail. If you buy a good pair, the materials will dry quickly when it would get wet and also abstain from bad smell. I suggest you pack 2 pairs of shorts for 10 days on the trail. Click here for cheap hiking short for men and for women .

A great alternative to lightweight hiking shorts are swimming pants with zippers. I got those… :)

13. Sleeping bag

Teahouses and guesthouses in Nepal will generally supply warm duvets however they won’t keep you as warm as a sleeping bag some people say. Temperatures can plummet in the rooms quite quickly and there have been situations where the inside of my room was covered in ice.

Personally I swear by NOT bringing a sleeping bag when I go trekking in Nepal, but Im an exception! Almost people that go trekking in Nepal bring sleeping bags. My body is aching all night and keeps me really hot already, a blanket from the guesthouse does the job for me in combination with a long tracking pants and a t-shirt.

Also sleeping bags are more hygienically then a blanket used by hundreds of people before you! :)

A good sleeping bag is rated to -4 degrees Celsius and with additional blankets, thermals and socks you will be warm. Sleeping bags are expensive but if you are planning on doing more than 1 trek in Nepal or elsewhere in the world, the investment is worth it.

When purchasing a sleeping bag, make sure silk liner is included. The purpose of a silk liner is to keep the rest of the sleeping bag clean especially when you haven’t washed or showered before you go to sleep. Something very common when trekking in Nepal! :)

They are a must and are perfect for those chilly mornings and late afternoons around the guesthouse. You gonna love wearing them when you set sail for an early morning departure. You can buy beanies everywhere in Kathmandu.

15. Emergency Blanket

This item is solely for your Nepal trekking packing list of course. An emergency blanket  (cheap, small & light) is a thin material used to warm the body in emergency situations. If you get stuck on a mountain or are feeling very cold, an emergency blanket will trap your body heat and warm you up in no time. Again weather in Nepal is extremely unpredictable so come prepared.

16.  Gloves

A good pair of gloves will make your trekking a whole lot more comfortable. I suggest a thin pair of gloves when going up in the Himalaya. In case you go to either ABC or EBS in the off season you may want to bring a pair of waterproof gloves made from wool.

17. Good day pack

I have always feared that I would be half way through a trek and my shoulder strap on my hiking bag would suddenly break, so far I have been lucky for this not to happen.

Make sure to have a solid daypack or small backpack large enough to carry your essential Nepal trekking items. In case you hire a porter you can even go with a much smaller bag. My favorite travel bag is my Pacsafe Venture , which I am not traveling with for many years and still works perfectly fine.

18. Rain cover for backpack

One thing I often forget is a rain cover for my hiking bag and with Nepal’s ever changing climate, it can unexpectedly rain at any time so a plastic cover is essential for keeping all your stuff dry.

19. Hand warmers

In extreme conditions, gloves might not cut it therefore I will always carry 1 or 2 packets of hand warmers . They come in the form of small, soft packets that can be placed in the gloves loose spacing’s and once activated can reach to 70 degrees Celsius. So use this Nepal trekking equipment list item with care! :)

20. Sunscreen

To contribute to a better world please add biodegradable sunscreen to your Nepal packing list. Get one with a high protection factor, especially for your face. it is a must when trekking in Nepal at altitude as the sun can be harsher on your skin.

21. Trekking Poles

Trekking poles are totally not my thing, but they make trekking much easier. I tried them once of friends and surprisingly loved using them for a little while. Must say though I was happy to give them back. I just want my hands to be free to take photos and for the sake of feeling free! :)

Trekking poles are great for steep descents and not so much going uphill. At least they give you a more complete workout while using them.

Toiletries and Medication Packing List

22. Sterilization Pen or similar

Water in Nepal cannot simply be consumed via a tap so to get around consuming too many bottles of water and compiling a pile of plastic bottles I pack a sterilization pen (Steri Pen) which has an ultraviolet light designed to eliminate all of the bad things in the water. A Steri pen takes about 1 to 2 minutes to treat 1 litre of water.

Chlorine tablets are another option and much cheaper. These tablets can be purchased in Thamel and take around 1 hour to work when add to water.

23. Imodium

Imodium will be your best friend if you have diarrhea, it’s a real pity I didn’t pack any for my recent trip to Langtang Valley.

24. Ibuprofen

Trekking can make you pretty raw and sore so I will always take with me Ibuprofen or pain killers to get me through rough patches.

25. Paracetamol

For when headaches occur, paracetamol is best.

26. Nausea pills

If you feel nauseas, these pills will stop you from wanting to throw up although they aren’t 100% guaranteed to work.

27. Bandages

Bandages are perfect for when you take a fall or sprain an ankle even break a bone.

28. Hydrolytes

Hydrolytes are basically extra salts that your body needs in order to keep hydrated. They come in the forms of small sachets and can be added to water for consumption. They also help mask the flavor of the water you are consuming if you choose a flavorsome pick!

29. Toilet Paper

Toilets will almost certainly never have a roll of toilet paper in them so you’ll have to take your own. 1 roll of toilet paper will last 1 week for 1 person. If you run out of paper, most guesthouses will have some available for purchase.

30. Antibacterial or Hand Sanitizer

A tube of 100ML of hand sanitizer will last at least 7 days and is perfect for cleaning your hands after a trip to the bathroom.

It sounds simple, of course you are going to bring cash. But how much? Keep in mind that in rural areas in Nepal or when you go trekking there are NO atm’s. Cash is an essential Nepal travel item. Here’s a brief guide to a daily spend while on a trek in Nepal.

  • Breakfast: Porridge and Black Coffee = 400 rupees
  • Lunch: Daal Bhat = 500 rupees
  • Dinner:  Vegetable Pasta = 500 rupees
  • Drinks: 5 Tea = 500 rupees for a cup
  • Total = 1,900 rupees/ $16 USD

Accommodation:

  • 1 pax, 1 Room = 550 rupees
  • 2 pax, 1 Room = 1,100 rupees
  • Total = $10 USD for 2 people

The above prices are an estimation on what you will spend per day going on a trekking in Nepal. Keep in mind that the higher you go, the prices will be higher too. On the contrary I experienced in 2013 trekking Annapurna Basecamp that sleeping was everywhere $1 USD per bed only. The Langtang trek in June 2019 was more expensive but I recently met a fellow traveler who did the Annapurna circuit in July 2023 and he confirmed that the beds on the Annapurna Circuit are still $1 or $2 USD per night. Meals are between $3 to $5 USD.

32. Reading Material

I learnt very early when trekking in Nepal that nights can be very long in guesthouses as there isn’t any entertainment. A book can be a very useful thing to bring to Nepal even if you are not a big reader.

I like to listen to music when I can’t sleep or if I am just lying around so be sure to have a few good playlists lined up before heading out on the trek.

34. Trail Snacks for trekking

Trekking always requires a decent amount of snacks to keep the energy levels high. 4 Useful tips for trail snacks in Nepal:

  • Stock up in Kathmandu as once you get to the start of the trail, there will be limitations on what is available for purchase.
  • Food on the mountain is pretty standard and they serve simple meals and everywhere the same.
  • Bring a lot as a couple days into the trek you may have already developed a dislike for the standard food.
  • Always check the date of the food when purchasing in Nepal.

35. Reusable Water Bottle

I hate plastic bottles like the one you buy in a shop so I recommend you to purchased a reusable water bottle for traveling . Get a tough, hardy bottle designed to take a lot of beatings. Filling up your bottle is easy and having a Steri Pen or chlorine tablets ready makes most water along the trails drinkable.

36. Trek Map

Maps are super useful even if there are properly marked trails. If you cannot access phone data, a map will be the next best thing to navigating around the Himalaya. I like to use maps by Nepal Map Publisher. They can easily be bought in Kathmandu for around $5. These maps are highly detailed with contours, town names, location of hospitals to the names of Himalayan Mountains.

37. Power banks

Power banks are a must when hiking in Nepal and often the bigger, the better in terms of storage. There will be guesthouses that you come across that don’t provide power so having a backup system is the best.

38. Mobile phone

Although being offline and away from civilization is one of the reasons I like to travel to Nepal, I would definitely recommend you to always have a mobile phone on you with an internet connection. It simply makes traveling much more convenient.

39. Camera equipment

As an avid photographer I of course travel with a bunch of camera gear. I use a Canon 80D and my favorite lens is a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 , expensive but totally worth it. You might also want to consider a zoom lens for mountain photography.

Although it has a lot of issues I still swear by a GoPro Hero 7 Black . Its software could and user experience could be much better but I love the content is shoots.

41. Adaptors

European adaptors are compatible with power sockets in Nepal. These are adaptors that have 2 skinny metal pins, get you world travel adapter here.

42. Portable Solar Panel

Depending on how remote your trek is, there might be no power available at all. I sometimes use a portable solar panel which I attach to the top of bag and throughout the day, I am charging one of my two power banks.

Once you have arrived at your guesthouse or destination, simply attach a power bank to the panel and place in the sun!

43. Battery Warmer

Nights can get very cold in Nepal and cold conditions are not good for batteries. After I finished using my cameras, I will take out all of the batteries and put them insulated container which I then will put in my sleeping bag at night this way the batteries will stay warm and are unlikely to loose charge.

Another great option is a sock or your buff; simply put the batteries in the item and put in your sleeping bag when going to bed.

44. GPS tracker

A global positioning satellite is one of those tools you need when doing serious off the trail adventuring or even if you just want to make sure you’re on track.

Epirbs are great for safety and tracking purposes. If something goes wrong on the trail or you really get lost, press the button on the Epirb and you will be rescued… eventually. An Epirb usually works like this; you inform a close relative or parent of where you intend to travel, how long for and why then go online and login to the Epirb that you have via a special code.

For example, I assign my parents to receive any information that comes from the Epirb such as the distress beacon call and once that is pressed, my parents will be informed that I am in trouble. From this point, my parents need to inform the police, rescue teams, ambulance, etc about my whereabouts.

46. Head lamps

Head Lamps are a necessary item if heading out early, arriving late or just heading to the bathroom at night. Make sure to pack a spare pair of batteries too. Head lamps or torches are a very common backpacking travel item you will find on any packing list!

Backpack or suitcase for traveling in Nepal?

I have now traveled the world continuously for more than 7 years and been to more than 100 countries and never owned a big backpack. Some of my travel friends swear by a backpack.

Of course a backpack is much easier when traveling to Nepal, especially when you go trekking. But… a big daypack will do the job too! For multi day trekking it is useless to bring all your stuff. It is completely normal to store your big backpack in a hotel/hostel in either Kathmandu, Pokhara or the trailhead.

Traveling with a backpack comes in handy when you decide to check out accommodation on the spot instead of booking online. But mostly you will go from taxi, to bus, to hotel, to taxi, to airport, just saying…

Personally I swear by my big Rimowa suitcase at the moment and my Pacsafe Venture daypack. Some of my friends still travel with a big 60/90L backpack and they rave about it as well. It leave it up to you…

Last tips for your Nepal packing list

This is pretty much the essential list of items that you need to pack for Nepal if you go trekking. If you are planning on doing more serious adventures like mountain climbing or whitewater rafting, you may need to do some research for what best suits that type of adventure.

One of the best tips I live by when packing for Nepal is “if you think you won’t use, you won’t need it”! The last thing you’ll need when trekking at altitude is an over packed and heavy bag.

I hope all the above things to bring to Nepal were helpful to complete your packing list. In case you have any specific questions about traveling to Nepal Im happy to help. Shoot me a message on my Instagram @traveltomtom .

What to Pack When You’re Traveling to Nepal

What to Pack When You’re Traveling to Nepal

The tallest mountains in the world, thick jungles, rich tea and amazing hospitality characterize the small country of Nepal. Sandwiched between India and China, it is a multi-ethnic country with over 40 races and tribes speaking over 100 languages. Most people survive through subsistence farming, as most people in the villages make less than $2/day.

What to Pack When You’re Traveling to Nepal

As a volunteer and then an employee for an international nonprofit, I’ve been able to travel to Nepal over 20 times, and still can’t wait to go back next month. I’ve taken many bags over the years and have tweaked my packing list to the point of finally achieving one-bag travel on my last trip.

Travel Preparation

Passport : You need one. And make sure it isn’t going to expire within 6 months, or you won’t be able to get a visa.

Visa : Getting one is easy. You don’t need it before you travel; just arrive at the Kathmandu international airport (the only international airport in the country right now) and pay the fee and boom, you’re approved! You can even pay in USD: $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 and $125 for 90 days. It’s an easy process and they even have computers now so you can digitally fill out the visa form, take the digital photo and it prints it out for you. (Still carry a few passport photos with you just in case. I make them myself by printing one 4″ x 6″ with six headshots.)

Immunizations : Get them. If you have a travel doctor, consult with them. The CDC has a health information page for travelers to Nepal that is always current and will update the most crucial immunizations. At minimum I’d suggest Hep A, Hep B, Rabies and Malaria meds, but always consult your doctor when traveling. If you will be in a jungle area, specifically west Nepal, seriously consider the vaccine for Japanese Encephalitis. Also, Dengue Fever cannot be cured with more cowbell; unfortunately, there is no vaccine for Dengue right now but it should be ready in the next year or two. Dengue is terrible and will knock you out for days, weeks, even months. Take it from me – you don’t want it. So have a plan for avoiding mosquitoes.

Cash : You can carry up to $2,000 USD before you have to declare it entering the country, but keep in mind that ATMs are easily accessible in the cities. Take $100 bills to get the best exchange rate. Don’t exchange at the airport; go to Thamel, the tourism area for trekkers in Kathmandu, and get a few money exchange booths to all bid for the best exchange rate. You can get at least one or two rupees per dollar more by doing this, which really adds up if you have a large amount of cash.

Phone : When you arrive at the Kathmandu airport, it is easy to get a $10 SIM card for your phone (if it is unlocked). Minutes are inexpensive, and once you buy the minutes, use them to activate a variety of low-cost data plans. I use a lot of data and call home almost every day and spend less than $10/week on average.

Packing List

There are so many reasons to move to one-bag travel ( at least 23 ), and I highly recommend it. Even with my laptop, camera and audio gear, everything fits nicely into the WANDRD HEXAD Access Duffel backpack.

WANDRD HEXAD Access Duffel

The HEXAD opens in the middle and has many access points and pockets to grab your gear on the go. The shoulder straps are not great, but the sternum strap and waist straps help offset some of the weight.

What to Pack When You’re Traveling to Nepal

This is everything I packed into the HEXAD, minus my REI 16 oz. water bottle and the Kuhl Kollusion jacket I stuffed through the side compression straps. I packed for 9 days, but honestly wouldn’t pack more for my normal 3-week trips. I’ll describe each item going down each of the five columns in the photo, from left to right.

Peak Design Medium Packing Cube : All my clothes fit into this. All of them. Moisture-wicking and odor-resistant shirts and underwear can really minimize your clothes. I’ve tried some merino wool but have found that I prefer the lululemon Silverscent Metal Vent shirts , their T.H.E. Sock Silver , and ExOfficio’s Give-N-Go Boxer Briefs . Along with my Royal Robbins Alpine Road travel pants , I can get by with just 3-4 shirts, 2-3 pairs of underwear, and 2 pairs of socks.

Peak Design Wash Pouch : The best wash bag I’ve used. The small side pocket for your toothbrush and toothpaste is a plus for quickly brushing teeth during travel at the airport. I also use the Matador toiletry bottles for shampoo, conditioner and face wash, and their soap bar case. They will all hang on a shower bar and are super convenient.

Flip flops: Use them in the shower. Trust me.

MacBook Pro 13″ : The 15″ is nice but for one-bag travel I like my laptop as small as possible yet still capable of video and photo editing.

Roost Laptop Stand : I work when I travel and I don’t want to be staring down at a screen straining my neck. The laptop stand brings my laptop closer to eye level which is better for your back and neck. Yes, the Roost is a bit pricey, but it’s smaller and more durable than the Nexstand .

Anker Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard : (inside Roost keyboard sleeve ) This and the Apple Bluetooth mouse let my laptop rest on the Roost stand and I’m all business and comfortable even in my hotel room or coffee shop. Or tea shop. Seriously, when in Nepal, drink milk tea, not coffee…

What to Pack When You’re Traveling to Nepal

Manfrotto Element Small Aluminum Traveler Tripod : I love Manfrotto tripods and this one folds down very nicely. It even fits into the WANDRD HEXAD Access cube pockets. Score.

Peak Design Sling 5L : Unzipping this sling is so aesthetically pleasing. And it holds so much for 5L. Mirrorless camera (LUMIX G85) and two lenses, five batteries, battery charger, 4 SD cards and a few cables. My iPad Mini 4 even slides nicely into the back of this.

WANDRD VEER Packable Bag with inflatable back and camera cube : I started using a REI daypack a year ago and quickly loved the idea and convenience of a daypack. But they are floppy and without form and few features. Until the VEER. The inflatable back gives it form and comfort. The camera cube with side access is super convenient. And the thick durable material (Weather Resistant N100D Robic Dynatec and N210D Robic HD Oxford) makes it a reliable bag beyond what you’d expect in a daypack. While I love the PD 5L sling for dayshoot photography, if I’m doing video with a tripod and audio gear, I take the VEER.

NOMATIC Toiletry Bag 1.0 for audio gear: I go back and forth with the NOMATIC brand, and while it is simple, this toiletry bag is durable and slightly smaller than similar bags. I’ve found it to be great for my audio gear including mountable camera mic, audio recorder, lavalier, at least 9 AA batteries, 3 SD cards, and more. I like having all the audio gear in a separate bag so I can leave it behind when just doing photography.

Boundary Supply Aux Compartment : I’m a sucker for a good sling bag. I’m not down with the whole new fanny pack movement sweeping the nation (although I’m trying), but man I love a good sling bag. This Aux Compartment is among my favorites as it will hold my iPad Mini 4, productivity journal, pens, business cards, battery pack and more. It’s perfect for pulling out of my one bag on the plane to have my essentials nearby during travel.

Incase City Accessory Pouch (black) : Great size. Great price. And full of all my additional cables.

Incase City Accessory Pouch (gray) : Batteries, SD cards and chargers, oh my. They all fit and are contained in this great field pocket.

The North Face pouch: I take a mobile diffuser and 3-5 Young Living oils in this, and they come out first as I am unpacking in my room upon arrival. It helps me feel at home right away. Along with some Miles Davis “Kind of Blue” playing through my mobile speaker of course.

Small North Face pouch: For all my drugs. Prescription drugs! Malaria meds, sleeping pills and more conveniently in one place.

REI Co-op Trail 2 Waistpack : Okay, again, I don’t get the fanny pack thing but I’m giving this a try. I wear it like a sling (never around my waist) and it’s great for my 16 oz water bottle, Anker battery charger and chapstick. Yes, chapstick. It gets dry on long flights…

Metal Straws: For all the VSCO girls out there. Save the turtles.

Calvin Klein Foldable Glasses Case: Packs up small during travel and tucks my glasses in at night.

Arriving In Kathmandu

Arrival and taxis : It will take some time to fill out your visa information, then pay for your visa, then go through customs. After which you’ll descend to the baggage claim and go through another “security checkpoint” where you will set off the metal detector but they will wave you through anyway. It will take some time for all of your luggage to arrive, and you may need to shove through the crowd to get to it. The luggage carts are free so grab one. Exiting the luggage claim they may wave you over to search your luggage or run it through the security scanner again. You can try to wave them off and confidently say “tikshaw” and they may just let you pass without the added delay.

As you exit out to the right, there’s a money exchange on the left (with moderately good rates but with a transaction fee and not as good as you can negotiate in Thamel), then on the right there’s a phone shop where you can get a SIM card and buy minutes before exiting the airport.

Once you walk out of the airport, taxi drivers and their assistants will try to grab your bags and “help you.” I prefer not to allow this as they want tips (and can’t all be trusted). If it is your first time to Nepal, the taxi drivers will try to overcharge you to drive you to your hotel. $8 should get you anywhere in Kathmandu from the airport, and only $4-6 to get to Thamel. If it is evening and dark out, the rates are $1-2 more than normal.

Booking guesthouses : You can easily book city hotels and guest houses on Expedia and other sites. Just look at photos, especially bathroom photos. What I’ve found is that many photos can be made to look nice, but the bathroom photos will truly reveal how nice a place is. Expect to spend $18-40 for a nice guesthouse. And even if you don’t stay at the Kathmandu Guesthouse , visit there during the day. They have a great barber and restaurant and outdoor napping areas.

Buying souvenirs : Thamel is the main tourism area of Kathmandu, with many shops and trekking companies. Unless the shop has a sign saying “fixed price” out front, all the prices are negotiable. You can normally negotiate down 10-30%. The more you buy at a shop, the better deal you can get. And even though you can get a good deal, keep in mind that every time you buy something you are helping employ someone in a country where the average annual income is about $1,000/year. So don’t be cheap. And check out the Sonam and Sherpa brand shops for good-quality Nepal clothing.

What to Pack When You’re Traveling to Nepal

A Nomad on the Loose

I am from everywhere and nowhere, and i am going anywhere and everywhere., budget breakdown: how much it costs to travel nepal.

The Cost of Traveling in Nepal

This post may contain affiliate links. If you click on one and purchase something, I may receive an affiliate commission — at no extra cost to you.

Installment #3 in my  Budget Breakdown  series details the cost to travel Nepal. This series provides transparency on travel costs for various places around the world.

Of course, like any travel budget, there are variances depending on your travel style, the time of year you visit, and what you choose to splurge on.

I spent two weeks in Nepal in December, which is considered low season. My time was spent between the capital of Kathmandu , trekking in the Annapurna mountain range, and relaxing in Pokhara , the jumping off point for Annapurna.

Annapurna Ghorepani Poon Hill sunrise

My time in Nepal was definitely on a backpacker’s budget, so if you’re more of a luxury traveler, this may not be as useful for you. (Though maybe take a look and see how much you could save!)

Otherwise, here’s how much it cost to travel Nepal based on my experience.

Table of Contents

Visas and flights to Nepal

Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu is the only international airport in Nepal, so it’ll be where you arrive unless you’re coming over land.

The price of flights obviously depends on your point of origin. From the West Coast of the United States, tickets tend to range between $600 and $1300.

Nepal requires visas for citizens of most countries, but the process is painless for most tourists (and even free for those from certain countries!). That’s because Nepal has visas on arrival.

Make sure to fill out the disembarkation “arrival card” that your flight crew gives you on the plane.

Once you land, get in line for the visa application kiosks as quickly as possible. With this e-visa kiosk, no passport photo is needed. But you will need to include accommodation info on that e-visa form, so make sure you’ve booked a night somewhere before you arrive.

(Alternatively, you can fill out a tourist visa form on the Department of Immigration’s website ahead of time and print out your receipt. This can only be done within 15 days of your arrival.)

Then get in the line for the visa fee collection counter. This was probably the biggest bottleneck in my experience as there were only two fee collectors, and the lines only seemed to budge every so often.

The fee for a visa on arrival is currently:

  • $25 USD for a 15-day visa
  • $40 USD for a 30-day visa
  • $100 USD for a 90-day visa

Make sure to have enough cash in a major currency. The sign said they accept U.S., Australian, Canadian, Singaporean, and Hong Kong Dollars, along with the Euro, British Pounds, and a variety of other currencies.

Visa and MasterCard were also purportedly accepted for a $1 USD surcharge, but those weren’t available the day I arrived. Perhaps that was also a cause of the delays.

Then hop on over to the immigration desk to get your visa!

*A similar process occurs at border control points for land crossings.

Money in Nepal

The currency is Nepalese Rupees, or NPR. Conversion rates vary as economies change, but generally, 100 NPR equals 1 USD.

Nepalese Rupee

I’m typically the type of traveler who is all about the credit cards and gets local currency via an ATM upon arrival in the country. If I have cash in any currency on me, it’s usually less than $60.

But boy am I glad that I had more U.S. dollars on me when I landed in Kathmandu. The two ATMs at the airport apparently have had long-standing issues, even for those with Nepalese debit cards.

After more than 30 minutes of fruitlessly trying one ATM and then shuffling to the other and then back and forth again, I finally gave up and went to the currency conversion desk. (I’d been reluctant not only because those are known to have poor exchange rates but also because the cash I had on hand was meant for my trip to Bhutan , where our ATM cards don’t work at all.)

So learn from my lesson and make sure to have at least some starter cash when you go to Nepal.

Even working ATMs can take a few minutes to think, so be patient when taking out cash! In my experience, most ATMs in Nepal charged withdrawal fees around the vicinity of 500 NPR.

Two weeks in Nepal cost

During my two weeks in Nepal, I spent a total of 5 days in the Kathmandu area, 3 days in Pokhara, 2 days getting between those two cities, and 4 days trekking.

Patan Durbar Square

Here’s the budget breakdown for two weeks in Nepal:

  • Food: 9505 NPR
  • Lodging : 3818 NPR (hostels and guesthouses)
  • Transportation: 5235 NPR (includes 3000 NPR to whitewater raft from Kathmandu to Pokhara instead of taking the bus)
  • Entertainment/attractions/tickets: 2610 NPR
  • Trekking gear (sleeping bag rentals, etc): 2400 NPR
  • Trekking permits: 4000 NPR
  • Misc (mouth mask, SIM card, massage, etc): 10,763 NPR

Total: 38,331 NPR, or ~$369.45 USD based on the conversion rates at the time. That’s about $26 USD a day!

Curious how all that breaks down on the hiking trail? Check out the full cost breakdown plus tips for trekking the Ghorepani Poon Hill trail on your own.

Annapurna guesthouse

Cost of things in Nepal

To give you a better idea of what things cost in Nepal, here are some averages for various common expenses you may face while traveling in Nepal.

  • A dish of street food: 60-100 NPR
  • A dish at a restaurant: 100-300 NPR
  • A dish at a nicer restaurant: 400-600 NPR
  • A dish on trekking trail: 500-700 NPR
  • Shared hostel dorm: 250-750 NPR
  • Trekking guesthouse: 200-700 NPR

dal bhat

To end on a related note, my sunglasses disappeared one day while I was in Nepal and I had to get some new ones given I was going to be in the Himalayas for a bit longer. I discovered that sunglasses that don’t even have UV protection are rather expensive compared to other costs in the country.

These “shades” cost around 1200-2000 NPR while the ones that have UVA/UVB protection were more in the 8000-15,000 NPR range. Eek!

So consider bringing a few extra pairs of sunglasses with UV protection for the folks you meet while you travel Nepal — eye health is important, and it doesn’t have to cost you that much! (You can also help by buying your own sunglasses from certain places.  This company is one of my favorites — for every pair you buy, they also give an eye exam, glasses, and sunglasses to someone in need.)

Hope this helps you plan and budget your trip to Nepal!

Thanks for the tips. I’m looking to go to Nepal at some point so this is very helpful. Also how was Bhutan? I’d love to go!

You’re welcome! Bhutan was an amazing experience. Certainly pricier than visiting other countries in the region, but so worth it. I hope they continue to limit the number of visitors in that way or another, wouldn’t want that beautiful country to be overrun by tourism!

$26 a day?! I like the sound of that! And the food looks so good. I’m going to check out some of your other Nepal articles because I’ve honestly never thought about travel there but I think I need to consider it.

It’s definitely a budget-friendly country! And one that we don’t learn much about in western countries, so definitely a great place to explore.

Thank you for this breakdown of cost. It helps a lot to estimate how much we need. Also thanks very much for ATM tips!

Glad to hear it’s helpful, Siddharth! Have a fantastic trip, and hopefully you don’t run into any ATM trouble!

Cheers, Rowena

so looking forward for my trip in April!! thank u so much for the breakdown on budget and the tips on ATM too… it sure helps alot…

So glad it’s helpful! Have an amazing time.

The Ultimate Nepal Packing List: Here’s Everything You Need To Carry

Nepal is an amazing country that offers a great mix of Himalayan views, ancient temples, charming village life, and jungle wildlife. However, the weather in Nepal makes it quite difficult to decide what to wear on your Nepal trip . The climate is extremely diverse, depending on the season and Nepal is a country where you can experience everything from snowstorms to immense heat. If you bring too many things, that might slow you down when trekking. Proper packing is the first step to making a trip memorable and that’s what this article will give you an idea of what all you need to add to your Nepal packing list.

How’s The Weather In Nepal?

Nepal weather

If you’re visiting in the spring (March-May), you’ll be fine with a simple t-shirt during the day but the nights can be a bit chilly. The summer is on from June to August and during this time, the weather is either hot and humid or rainy. If you’re planning to visit Nepal during the monsoon season, you should definitely add an umbrella and a raincoat to your Nepal packing list.

Autumn (September-November) is probably the best time to visit Nepal. The weather is pleasant, there’s no fog in the mountains and this is the peak season for trekking. It is also a great time for visiting the Everest Base Camp, one of the most popular tours in Nepal. Finally, the winter starts in December and ends in March. During this time of the year, the weather gets cooler but not cold, at least in the big cities . However, if you’re visiting places at a higher altitude, you’ll need proper winter clothes.

What To Wear In Nepal?

walk in Kathmandu

Before visiting you should know that Nepal is a conservative country and you should have this in mind when planning what to wear. If you’re a girl, bare shoulders or knees can be seen as disrespectful and will make it difficult if you’re visiting ancient temples of UNESCO heritage sites. Nepalese women usually wear saris and kurtas or jeans with moderate tops in the urban cities.

If you’re hiking in higher altitude , bring more warm clothes. Don’t forget a light down jacket and a hood or a dawn vest. If you’re trekking in lower altitudes, wear light , quick-dry sweatpants and t-shirts but don’t forget warmer clothes for the evenings. Temperatures drop suddenly during the night.

For The Cities

Additionally, consider wearing a face mask to protect you from Kathmandu’s ridiculous air pollution if you plan to rent a motorcycle or a bike.

Essential Travel Documents and Money Handling

Before you embark on your Nepalese adventure, ensure your paperwork is in order. A valid passport and a visa (on arrival for many) are non-negotiable . Don’t overlook trekking permits for specific regions. On the financial side, carrying USD for the visa fee and additional expenses is wise. Nepal’s cash-driven society means having local currency in hand for daily transactions. A blend of preparedness and flexibility will smooth your financial dealings, enhancing your travel experience.

With that being said let’s dig into…

The Ultimate Nepal Packing List

From the high mountaintops of the Himalayas to the busy streets of Kathmandu, here’s everything you might need to pack for your trip to Nepal but before we start, check out my article about the most common packing mistakes and make sure you avoid them.

1. Get Comfortable Hiking Shoes But Don’t Forget About Slippers

Nepal packing list

You’ll probably spend most of your time exploring Nepal’s breathtaking outdoors and good hiking shoes that are already worn are absolutely necessary. The two most common options are mid/high trekking boots that provide great ankle support and sky running trainers that will help you maintain your balance while climbing at higher altitudes.

The first option will keep your ankle stable but you’ll make it more difficult on your body to keep balance. The second option is better for balance but you’ll still need special bandages to provide the needed support for your ankles. Finally, don’t forget to bring slippers . You’ll desperately need them once you’re done hiking for the day and your feet need rest. Also, you’ll want to wear them on the bus, especially if you’re visiting in the summer.

2. Water Bottle With A Built-In Filter

Drinking water is an extremely scarce resource in Nepal, especially in the mountains. When you get above 3,000 meters, you can rarely even find bottled water. The only option here is to refill your own bottle from a teahouse/restaurant that has a purifier and that costs at least 200 Nepalese rupees ($2) per liter. If you have a water bottle with a built-in filter , you can refill your bottle anywhere, including mountain streams. Alternatively, you could also use a self-filtering straw that functions in a similar manner or water purification tablets.

3. Nepal Power Adapter

The most commonly used plugs in Nepal are the Type D (also used in India ) but at some places, you can also find Type C plugs (European). My advice is to bring a type D adapter and a universal adapter to make sure that you can charge all of your devices.

4. Virtual Private Network (VPN)

If you’re a digital nomad or at least hope to get some work done while on your vacation, a VPN is something you must add to your Nepal packing list. The internet in the Nepalese Himalayas is practically non-existent on a height above 3,000 meters and the connection is pretty poor even in the cities. Not only can the VPN solve this problem but it can also add an extra layer of security to your internet usage that comes really handy while you’re traveling.

5. Sunscreen And Sun Hat

sunsets in nepal

Many first-time visitors and inexperienced trekkers think that the mountains are a cold place that doesn’t get a lot of sunlight. However, the higher elevation actually increases the risk of UV overexposure and sunburns, even when it’s cold. Needless to say, your Nepal adventure will be much more pleasant if you’re not suffering from the sting of sunburns. Additionally, if you’re visiting in the summer, consider getting a sun hat too.

6. Rain Jacket

Nepal packing list

Did I mention I forgot mine? It was a struggle…

Like I mentioned in the beginning, Nepal has a rainy season in which heavy rain is something you’ll see almost every day. And nothing can ruin a trip like getting caught in the rain unprepared. If this happens and you’re trekking, keep in mind that you’ll stay wet until you find a shelter and sometimes that can be miles away. That’s why a lightweight and compact rain jacket is an essential item of your Nepal packing list.

7. Activated Charcoal

New types of food, new bacteria, a different climate, and the physical exhaustion are just some of the things that can upset your digestion while traveling around Nepal. And if we add the exotic street food in the mix, you could very easily end up with a traveler’s diarrhea. That’s why it’s always a good idea to take a few of these capsules with you to absorb the toxins in your digestive tract if necessary. In this way, you can get back to normal in no time and continue your trip as nothing happened.

8. Female Urination Device

female urination device

I know it sounds weird but western toilets aren’t really a thing in Nepal. Additionally, they are practically non-existent in the mountains. Even though it might not be as essential as some other items on this list, this simple device can make urinating much simpler and less messy. You also don’t have to worry about hygiene as these products normally come with sanitizing wipes and a sanitary carry bag.

9. Hand Sanitizer

A hand sanitizer is an absolute must when visiting Nepal. Most of the tea houses in the mountains don’t provide soap for guests and neither do the restaurants in the mountains. That’s why bringing a hand sanitizer for your Nepal trip is absolutely essential.

10. Insect Repellent And Leech Socks

nepal jungle trek

Getting an insect repellent and socks that will protect you from leeches is just common sense and Nepal isn’t any different, especially if you’re visiting during the rainy season. Around this time of the year, there are also a lot of leeches. Some of them even followed us to one of our hotel rooms. If you’re hiking during the rainy season, you would want to get these leech socks to protect yourself.

11. A Day Backpack

backpacking gear

You’ll probably take a couple of one-day trips or go hiking if you’re visiting Nepal. In these situations, it’s important to have a good and comfortable backpack. For more details regarding this, you can check out my article about the best hiking backpacks .

12. Passport Photocopy And Passport-Size Images

You’ll need these not only for your visa on arrival but for all the trekking permits you need to acquire on the way. Additionally, making a photocopy or getting a passport size photograph is difficult in the remote areas. That’s why bringing these things is a no-brainer.

13. Walking Poles

Nepal packing list

not like this one though, get a real one 🙂

Using walking sticks decreases the strain on your knees and can help you with balancing as well. Versatile and durable lightweight poles that are simple to store are highly recommended for trekking in Nepal .

14. A Scrubber Wash Bag

If you haven’t heard about it, the scrubber wash bag is a pocket-sized device with which you can wash your clothes anywhere. It’s a perfect choice if you’re trekking, camping or backpacking .

15. If You’re Camping

If you’re trekking away from the teahouse trek route , there are a few additional things you might need to carry.

  • A tent and a sleeping bag
  • A pocket knife
  • A lighter and campfire supplies
  • A flashlight
  • A supply of nonperishable food
  • First-aid kit
  • Dry shampoo and dry conditioner
  • A compass or GPS device

What To Pack And What To Buy There

Nepal mountains

If you’re looking for trekking equipment, you will find many shops in Kathmandu and Pokhara that can equip you with all the necessary gear. The quality is decent, so don’t be afraid even if you go unprepared. The same goes for toiletries and personal hygiene items.

However, if you’re planning to buy clothing items or shoes, keep in mind that most of them will be made locally, the price will be lower but so will the quality.

Finally, don’t consider buying technology items from Nepal. All of the items from this category will be imported, and hence, much more expensive.

Shopping For Gear In Kathmandu

kathmandu view

If you Nepal packing list is lacking something, Kathmandu is a treasure trove for trekkers, offering a wide range of gear at Thamel and other markets . From high-quality sleeping bags to durable hiking boots, you can find or rent almost anything you need for your trek. While prices are competitive, the quality varies, so inspect items carefully. Shopping locally not only supports the economy but also gives you the chance to interact with knowledgeable vendors, adding a layer of authenticity to your preparation for the trails.

Eco-friendly Packing Tips

packing items

Adopting green packaging practices is not only good for the environment; makes your trip more interesting. Choose reusable water bottles, silicone tubes for toiletries and leave single use plastic bottles.Think of biodegradable soap and compostable wet wipes to minimize your environmental impact. `Analogy:` Consider biodegradable soap and compostable wet wipes as biodegradable soap and compostable wet wipes smell. Packing light and sustainably not only alleviates your load but also goes in line with the philosophy of responsible travel thus preserving the trails and landscapes for future generations.

This is an ultimate packing guide for Nepal. I myself want to go to Nepal someday and these can be helpful.

This a great packing list that is ultimately essential to any traveler. And I agree with the camping list, some travelers take for granted little things that can actually be important while camping.

Wow, this is actually an exhaustive list. Totally second it. But being an Indian I just got a little confused when you mentioned 200 RS (2$). For a clearer understanding, you can mention NPR or Nepa RUpees. Insect repellent is a must especially a mosquito repellent and while trekking the leech socks.

Thanks, Judy - I'm glad you liked it. Also, thanks for the correction, I didn't realize that might confuse some people. I'll make a correction :)
