25 EPIC Things to Do in Cali, Colombia (and a guide!)

cali colombia round trip

Ask anyone who’s travelled to Colombia where their favourite place is, and you might hear answers like the city of eternal spring, or the romantic colonial streets of Cartagena. Those people aren’t wrong, they’re pretty cool places. But Cali? Well, this city is my favourite. There are just so many fun things to do in Cali, Colombia, that most people are oblivious to!

My intention was to stay in Cali for a few nights. But that soon turned into one week, then another, and another. I was/am obsessed. Cali is known as the salsa capital of the world , so of course one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia, is to dance salsa!

But the truth is, many travellers don’t do much more than a bit of dancing. They then move on to the next stop in their Colombia itinerary. They miss out on all the other fun things to do in Cali, Colombia! But there is more to this city than just salsa . This blog post will outline 26 fun things to do in Cali, Colombia so you can have an unforgettable time here.

If you’re wondering what to do in Cali, Colombia, other than just dancing, dive in!

Best things to do in Cali, Colombia

Get lost in san antonio.

Cali does not have the best reputation when it comes to safety, but you can count on San Antonio being a pretty safe neighbourhood. It’s here that you’ll find the most brightly painted houses, freshly painted murals and cute coffee shops on every corner.

If you’re choosing to stay in this neighbourhood (which most travellers do), getting familiar with this barrio should be near the top of your list of things to do in Cali, Colombia .

Watch a salsa show at the Mulato Cabaret

Although all types of salsa are danced in the city, it’s the Cali-style salsa that’s danced the most . They call it salsa Caleña. This is what you’ll see performed at the Mulato Cabaret. The show starts at midnight and often lasts for 1 hour. Be prepared to be absolutely wowed.

Don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes as there’s a dancing floor below the stage where you’ll surely be pulled up to dance on.

The Mulato Cabaret hosts shows every Sunday night and watching one is one of the best things to do in Cali , Colombia!

Try Cholado

Cho…what? CH-LA-DO! Every region in Colombia brings a different plate to the table, and Cali’s is cholado. It’s a cup of shredded ice, tropical fruits, condensed milk, jam, biscuits, and wafers, and it’s all topped off with ice cream.

The best place to try this Cali delicacy is by the Canchas Panamericanas , aka, the football pitches. Just a bit further along from here you’ll find lots of stalls all practically selling the same cholado. Pick one, and start the indulging process. If you’ve never been to the city before, this must be on your list of things to do in Cali, Colombia!

A plastic cup full of shedded ice, condensed milk, and jam, topped with a wafer and a blue straw. The Canchas Panamericanas are one of the best places to visit in Cali to try cholado!

Go on a bird-watching tour

Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world (second only to Brasil which is 7 times the size of Colombia!). So it comes as no surprise that it’s possible to catch glimpses of some of the world’s coolest birds.

Cali also just so happens to be the city with the biggest bird diversity in Colombia . There are a number of great birding spots near Cali, which Uncover Colombia touches on perfectly in this blog post .

If you haven’t already done a bird-watching tour in this country, it should definitely be on your list of things to do in Cali, Colombia.

Relax at the Rio Pance

Just a short bus ride out of town is the locals’ favourite river to relax and cool down in. Here you can swim in the cold water, chill for the afternoon and eat freshly cooked fish.

To get there from San Antonio, all you need to do is take a bus or an Uber to Universidades. From there, hop on a bus that takes you to the Rio Pance.

If you can help it, pick any day to visit except Sunday . This is most Colombians’ day off and the river can get very busy.

Visit during one of Cali’s famous festivals; one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia

La Feria de Cali is one of Colombia’s most famous festivals and happens every year in December. It’s a whole week of spectacular salsa shows, free cultural events and music performances that people from all over the world come to be a part of.

If you’re looking for an immersive cultural experience, this is by far one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia. How much better does it get than dancing your heart out in Colombia on Christmas day?!

But La Feria de Cali isn’t enough for this city.  Cali is the city with the second largest afro population in the whole of Latin America . As such, it makes sense for it to hold El Petronio; a huge festival with a special focus on showcasing the region’s Pacific culture through dance, food and music events all over the city. If you’re visiting during the month of August, you’re in for a treat!

There is no paradise without salsa

Take a cable car over the city: one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia

The neighbourhoods of Siloe and la Estrella are said to be the most dangerous in Cali. While visiting them isn’t recommended (unless you go on an expensive tour), flying over them is a totally different matter!

One of my favourite things to do in Cali, Colombia, is to take in the far-reaching views of the Mio Cable as it passes over these two neighbourhoods . It’s an eye-opening experience that makes you realise that those living here are normal people just like you and me going about their daily lives. Plus, you get to see great views of the city!

It’ll also only set you back the cost of a single metro ride – just a few thousand Colombian pesos!

Take a salsa class

You can’t come to Cali and not take at least one salsa lesson. I will repeat it. Cali is the salsa capital of the world .

Caleños (locals that live in Cali), eat, sleep and breathe salsa. They’ll pull you up from out of nowhere for a dance. You’d better know the very basic steps (but don’t worry if you don’t, Caleños are super friendly).

There are SO MANY dance schools in the Cali that offer salsa classes . The cheapest ones are on the outskirts of the city, and not the easiest to get to. The ones in San Antonio like Salsa Pura and the lessons at Viajero Hostel are central but more expensive.

My favourite dance school in Cali, just a 10-minute walk from San Antonio, is called Rumba Y Salsa . The lessons are very affordable and all the instructors welcome you with open arms. It honestly felt like a mini family.

Dancing salsa is one of my all-time favourite things to do in Cali, Colombia, and I think it might just be yours soon too!

A mural of a man and a woman dancing Salsa outside Salsa Pura

Try another style of dance

You may be in the salsa capital of the world, but that doesn’t mean it’s just salsa you’ll find here. In fact, Cali is brimming with different types of dances for you to try . Hip hop, bachata, merengue, twerking (is that a dance?) you name it!

While it’s the salsa that takes centre stage in Cali, there are a few clubs in the city that have bachata . Rumba y Salsa can help you pick up basic bachata steps at their free Friday night group lessons. They also have free beginner hip hop classes twice a week.

If you’re interested in different types of Latin dance, Cali has more than enough options for lessons!

Visit the Alameda Market: one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia

Just a 20-minute walk from San Antonio is this locals’ paradise of fresh and funky fruit and vegetables.

While San Antonio isn’t that touristy compared to other places in Colombia, it’s still where most of the ‘white people’ congregate. A visit to this market will encourage you to interact with locals, plus, you can buy some healthy snacks too!

Colombia has over 400 fruits for you to try, and you can find a lot of them in the Alameda Market! My favourites are granadillas, mamoncillos, and uchuvas.

Hike up the Christ the Redeemer statue (and eat pizza!)

For far-reaching views over the Valle del Cauca (the department Cali is in), wake up early and walk up to one of South America’s many knock-of-versions of Rio’s Christ the Redeemer statue.

If you’re walking up, make sure to leave by 9 am so you’re hiking with other people who are also going up. As soon as the path up there gets deserted, it gets a bit more sketchy. Make sure to fuel yourself with a slice of pizza on the way up from one of the many pizza stands!

Hiking to viewpoints like this is one of my favourite things to do in Cali, Colombia, on a Sunday. Most dance schools are closed on this day making it a perfect day to explore .

Hike to Pico de Loro: one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia

Pico de Loro, or Parrot’s Peak, is a rocky pinnacle in the middle of the Farallones de Cali Natural National Park. A hike here will take you about 8 hours round trip and will see you walking through misty forests and past majestic waterfalls and rocky rivers. You’ll get to experience unparalleled views of the Farallones mountains, the Valley del Cauca, and all the way to the Pacific Coast .

You’ll also get the chance to spot some of the park’s more than 500 bird species!

Like any city, Cali can get pretty hectic, polluted and busy. If you’re in need of a day away from the city’s buzz, a day hike to Pico de Loro is one of the best things to do in Cali , Colombia for you!

Take a free walking tour

Wherever you are, it’s always a good idea to orient yourself.

Viajero hostel, la Casa de Adry and Guru Tours all offer great free walking tours that last about 2 hours. Just make sure to tip your guide after! Viajero hostel also offers a food tour of the city. It’s ideal if you’re new to the area and want to sample some of the local produce, cafes and restaurants.

Join a Chiva party bus

How does lively music, unlimited alcohol, and jumping around on a moving bus with complete strangers sound to you? If that made you turn your nose up, skip to one of the next best things to do in Cali, Colombia. This isn’t for everyone!

There are a few Chiva party bus services in town, but by far the most popular is the one that leaves from Viajero Hostel . If you decide to experience this, just know, it’s not cheap . At the time of this writing, the price is 60’000 COP per person for a 2-hour ride with unlimited alcohol and entry to a nightclub.

Even if you’re not super sold on this idea, it’s something fun to experience at least once in the country, and one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia!

Chill in the San Antonio Park

At the top of the San Antonio neighbourhood, you’ll stumble on a grassy park with awesome views over the city. It seems to be the centre of all the attention in San Antonio, especially in the evenings.

Young people, families and old people alike all like to hang out here. It’s a social part of the city that comes alive after dark , with music, food and souvenir stalls stealing the show.

There’s also a cute colonial church right at the top that’s worth having a look in!

Hike El Cerro de las Tres Cruces

From almost anywhere in the city (I find the pedestrian bridges tend to be great vantage spots!) you can see 3 crosses poking out of the mountainside.

Join a whole load of Colombians in the early morning as you trek up the mountainside, over rocky boulders and uneven ground. Make sure to enjoy the transient salsa music as Colombians run past you with their speakers on their way up.

A hike up there will take up a big chunk of your morning and early afternoon but is well worth it for the far-reaching views over Colombia’s third biggest city .

Marvel at Iglesia La Hermita

I’m not that into churches, and if you’ve been travelling in South America for a while, you might be desensitized to them too.

But in the heart of Cali’s city centre, you’ll quickly run into Iglesia La Hermita. Even if you’re not the biggest fan of churches, anyone can appreciate its external facade .

It’s a huge, striking pale blue and white baroque-style church. To me, it looks kind of like a massive fancy doll house . If you’re wandering around downtown, a quick stop here is worth your time.

Try sugarcane juice

Feeling like a sweet and refreshing drink? Sugarcane juice can help with that. Just walk into downtown Cali and you’ll find wooden sugarcane juice stands on every street corner.

As well as getting a nice drink, it’s pretty cool to see the sugarcane juice extracted from the pressed sugarcane . They then add lemon and ice to it and voilà!

Try out indigenous dances at the Loma de la Cruz

You’ll find salsa every night of the week in Cali, but reserve your Thursday evenings for indigenous dancing at La Loma de la Cruz . On this day of the week, it turns from a tranquil artisanal park during the daylight hours to a dance park as soon as the sun goes down.

This is a great time to try something a bit new, and you’ll be there with hundreds of others doing the same as you! Just be prepared to sweat and to move!

A graded water fountain outside the Loma de La Cruz in Cali

Visit Cali’s Zoo

This is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon in Cali. You’ll get the chance to see a plethora of different animals, from lemurs to tigers and colourful macaws . They have a lot of animals from Colombia and Latin America but also a lot from elsewhere too!

The entry price is also very affordable, at around 25’000 COP per person .

Say hi to Cali’s famous cats

If you’ve been in Cali any length of time now, you’ll have probably seen murals of funky cat statues or cat magnets sold in almost every souvenir shop.

Walk along Cali’s Avenida del Rio and you’ll realise why. You’ll see quite a number of different cat sculptures, and they all have different personalities!

Originally, there was just one cat sculpture, a giant male cat donated by Hernando Tejada . But then a project. called ‘Las novias del gato’, aka, ‘the cat’s girlfriends’ was started by different artists. New cat sculptures sprung throughout the green walkway and they became so important that they’re now very symbolic of the city.

If you’re wondering what to do in Cali, Colombia, on a chilled afternoon, go for a walk on the Avendia del Río.

Eat at Parque de los Perros

Most places in Cali aren’t super safe to walk around at night, but Parque de Los Perros is an exception. You’ll find heaps and heaps of restaurants here and it’s a great spot to visit for a bit of a change of scenery.

It’s a bit far from San Antonio, so you’ll need to catch a taxi here .

Mingle with locals on the Boulevard del Río: one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia

You won’t have to search for a party or a night out in Cali. They’ll come looking for you!

While most seem to be indoors, Friday nights are best spent among locals, beer and street parties on the Boulevard del Río . The streets are crowded (watch your belongings!) and the company is the best you’ll get! If you’re into integrating and meeting local people, this is definitely one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia!

Go souvenir shopping at La Loma de la Cruz

I mentioned La Loma de la Cruz as a place to take part in indigenous dances earlier, but during the day, it’s a much tamer affair . If you’re wondering what to do in Cali, Colombia, and you’ve remembered you need to buy souvenirs, this is the place in the city to do it.

There are a few artisanal shops here selling everything from hammocks to traditional beaded jewellery and Colombian sweet treats.

Dance the night away: one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia

If you’re wondering what to do in Cali, Colombia, at night time, look no further. The city has no shortage of clubs , and you should definitely be in one of them every night! Get your dancing shoes on, or, well, converse (who has space for high heels in a backpack!) and get ready to dance salsa, bachata, merengue, and reggaeton!

These are my favourite nightclubs in Cali…

💃🏽 LA TOPA TOLONDRA  – Even if you’ve been in Cali less than a day, you’ve heard of La Topa. This is without a doubt Cali’s most famous club and the place where everyone goes to dance salsa. They’re open every night of the week, but Monday nights and Wednesday nights there are especially great. They also offer classes during the evenings on some weeknights.

Men and women dancing in La Topa Tolondra, one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia!

One of the best clubs in the city!

💃🏽 MALAMAΝA  – This used to be more of a local’s club as it’s tucked away underground in the city centre, a place where most tourists are too fearful of visiting at night. But hop in a taxi here and be ready to be transported to a Colombian 80s and 90s salsa bar with a live band and a cosy atmosphere. This is my favourite spot to dance salsa on a Saturday night!

💃🏽 EL RINCON DE HEBERTH – Cali is very salsa heavy, but on Thursday nights this nightclub switches it up a bit and throws in a bit of bachata. You know, the sexy and sensual dance that you can’t help but sway your hips to. It’s also an outdoor nightclub, which makes it a bit cooler to dance in and gives you a bit more space. They also have a few salsa performances sporadically spread out throughout their evenings.

A large number of people at the Rincón de Heberth, an outdoor night club in Cali. This is one of the best things to do in Cali!

💃🏽 ESPACIO 1060 – This nightclub is well known in Cali for bringing the freshest reggaeton hits to the dance floor. If you’ve heard enough salsa music for one night, 1060 is where you should hit up next. It has a laidback atmosphere with an outside seating area that offers 360° views over the city. It also seems to have a glow-in-the-dark kind of theme going on!

💃🏽 LA PERGOLA  – Another city centre nightclub, but instead of being underground, it’s on a rooftop. As well as hosting themed nights and excellent dance performances, they also have a lot of pink neon lights and a lot of space to dance in. It also has two sections – a salsa, bachata, kizomba dance floor and a reggaeton section.

Giselle and her friends dressed in white clothes at a white themed night in La Pergola

A white party at La Pergola

💃🏽 RUMBA Y SALSA  – Okay, this is technically not a nightclub, it’s a dance academy. But every Friday night at 9 pm it has a basic beginner bachata class and at 10 pm it turns into a small bachata party. They call it Bachateame. I spent almost every Friday night in Cali here and had the best time ever!

Zaperoco and La Caldera del Diablo are two other clubs that I didn’t get around to visiting but also have great reputations. Going on a night out in this Colombian city is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Cali, Colombia.

Make sure you experience this part of the city at least once while you’re here!

Where to eat in Cali, Colombia

There is no shortage of good restaurants in Cali, Colombia. During my 3 week stay there, I ate at a lot of different places. These are my favourite places to eat in Cali, Colombia, as well as other places to grab snacks.

Unless stated otherwise, all of the places mentioned here are in the San Antonio neighbourhood.

💰 Panaderia Quinta CON Quinta – You may be fooled into thinking this bakery is just a bakery. It’s also a casual restaurant! The meals here are ridiculously cheap at 10’000 COP and absolutely delicious! As an extra bonus, it’s also open 24 hours. I would often stop by here at 3 am after a night of dancing and have a big plate of chicken, salad, rice, plantain and beans. Yum!

💰 Sukha – This is a vegan and vegetarian restaurant with a special emphasis on healthy food. They offer traditional Colombian meals, as well an interesting range of hot dogs, loaded fries and burgers.

A ketchup and mayo covered vegetarian hot dog at Sukha, one of the best places to eat in Cali, Colombia.

💰 Al Sacia –  This little cafe has a great assortment of different cakes for as little as 5’000 COP! They’re also open pretty late, perfect for those late-night munchies.

💰 Seviches – A small restaurant specialising in fish and seafood. It’s very big on ceviche.

💰 Cirios – Stop by here for a traditional Colombian meal – rice, potatoes, meat, patacones and salad. They also have a few salads and some interesting pasta dishes.

💰 Alameda Market – Just a 20-minute walk away from San Antonio you’ll find some of the best places to eat in Cali! The Alameda market is home to loads of stalls selling everything from freshly made tamales, to random assortments of fish dishes, and even Spanish paella! Even if you’re not planning on eating here, this is one of the best places to visit in Cali, Colombia.

A bowl of sancocho, and a plate of rice, salad, patacón, and bagre (a meaty fish – a really tasty meal!

💰💰 6/7  – This street-side cafe was my go-to spot for a milkshake or smoothie after a sweaty dance lesson. They also serve cocktails and popcorn, which you can enjoy while learning the lyrics to Reggaeton songs they put up on their outdoor TV screen.

💰💰 La Casa de Paty – Serves up a delicious carbonara and a healthy chicken salad!

💰💰 Toro Burger – As the name suggests, this place’s speciality is burgers.

💰💰 Patacón – For all things plantain, this restaurant has got you covered. Patacón, plantain, plantain chips. This restaurant is located in El Parque del Perro, so you’ll need to get a taxi here.

Everything is made out of plantain (except the smoothies)!

💰💰 El Pizzaron – Grab a massive slice of pizza and a fruity cocktail here to take away and enjoy the city’s view from the nearby San Antonio park. This is my favourite pizza place in Cali!

💰💰💰 Criollan Lovers – With all the luscious plants here, this place seems like more of a jungle than a restaurant. Their theme is Peru mixed with Latin America. Not only are their concoctions absolutely delicious, they’re also something worth Instagramming!

💰💰💰 Waunana Restaurant – If you’re interested in trying out Colombian fine dining, this is one of the best places to visit in Cali. Their meals are all fancy dishes with a Colombian twist and the chef pours her heart into everything she creates. I highly recommend the passionfruit cocktail!

Best places to stay in Cali, Colombia

The best neighbourhood to stay in Cali is San Antonio. This is a quaint, colonial neighbourhood with colourful architecture and a big park. It’s only a 10-minute walk to the centre of the city but still remains a safe area to walk around in, both during the day and the early hours of the night.

Most of the hostels are found in this neighbourhood. I stayed at Viajero Hostel for my first 2 nights but found it to be a little loud and expensive. I moved to nearby La Casa de Adry, where I stayed for the remainder of my time in Cali.

Hammocks, a bicycle and a palm tree in Hostal Viejero's open air courtyard

Viajero Hostel

The rooms in La Casa de Adry are ridiculously cheap! For a 2-person dorm (literally sharing with only one other person) I paid 25’000 COP. For a bed in a 5-person dorm, I paid 20’000 COP. They also have hammocks, a terrace and various common areas. You can also use their small kitchen (though I’ll admit it’s not the best). From Monday to Thursday they also have free beginner salsa classes!

But most importantly, I met so many lovely people in this hostel. The next time I go back to Cali, I’m staying here (yup, I’m already planning my next trip here).

Other travellers I met were staying in La Sucursal and La Vaina and they also had good things to say.

So…Is Cali, Colombia, worth visiting?

While it may not be firmly established on Colombia’s gringo trail, Cali, Colombia is ideal for travellers wanting to visit an authentic Colombian city that still sees some tourists passing through .

The people from Cali are some of the friendliest I’ve ever met, it’s got a fantastic dance culture, and it’s close to a lot of natural beauty spots. Cali is also a great city to stop off in if you’re travelling between Colombia and Ecuador .

With so many things to do in Cali, Colombia, and in my opinion, the best party scene in the country, you won’t want to leave. Take it from me, who planned on visiting for 3 days and ended up staying 3 weeks!

Top 5 airlines serving from Atlanta to Cali

I had a great travel experience as there weren't any delays and I was able to get to Mexico City on time for conference.

Quick flight on older aircraft. Sat in last row…really noisy. No video available

Terrible. Delta delays caused us to miss our flight and they did nothing to fix it.

Horrible. First delta flight was delayed. I ran to my connecting flight and arrived to the gate 13 mins before departure. I told the gate agent “I’m here”, she told me flight was closed while giving my already confirmed seat to an stand by passenger. I said again “madam, I’m here with my confirmed seat” and she said “no you’re not here@ and gave two stand by people a boarding pass and let them board. I asked “madam, why do you do that?”, and she repeated “you’re not here”. That was very rude. I’m disappointed of delta. It used to have a good customer service. Things have changed, but not for good.

Keep us informed of delays in a more timely manner

There was no FREE wi-fi nor entertainment screens at all.

full flihgt but crew and passengers all helped eachother we landed early! however we then had to wait 40 minutes on the tarmac to get into the gate there were people trying get connecting flights, assume its an airport issue but still frustrating

Everything was smooth and easy to fly. No complains and a lot of thanks!

Didn’t feel that same attention and carénese as other crew members

were we seat it was freezing cold we even got sick. We asked the flight attending why it was so cold and she said she will take care of it and it got worse.

Copa performed as expected for the amount of money I was willing to spend for the flight; it wasn’t exceptional but it was not bad in any way either. The crew was good; friendly and straightforward. The food was airplane food, so no expectations there and the entertainment was lacking but that was my fault for owning an IPhone with a charging port that’s not compatible with the rest of the world. I’d fly Copa again.

Left my bags in origin city on a business class ticket , spent about 2-3 days in the same clothes plus the flight .

the planes are not modern there are no phone chargers

As usual, the flight with normal legroom was not very comfortable, but the second flight was much better because we had paid for extra legroom. It was very nice to check our bags without an extra fee.

LOCKED MY BAG WITHOUT CONSENT. Had to have my zippers cut upon arrival in Costa Rica.

No air in the middle rows. Had a hard time breathing. Was dying of heat.

Horrific checkin procedure with neither Delta nor Latam figuring out how to check me in. 4 hrs on customer support with both and both airlines pointing to each other who should do checking. I was not checked in until morning of flight, which for international flight is concerning.

It was a good experience, the flight was a little too long & the food was ok

Awful, horrible customer service. Flight got delayed and had to spend y the night in Bogota as a result. Very poor

Hostile flight attendants. Second flight with Jose so much better. Arrived 1/2 hour early. Thanks.

the flight from Boston to Curitiba was on time actually 30 minutes earlier. latam was not able to unload the luggage for custom checkup in Sao Paulo ii took two and half hours . i missed the flight to Curitiba spend the night in hotel and then flying in the morning to Curitiba

Tough flight with turbulence… I was told by a fellow passenger that it is common. Nonetheless, very stressful. Cordial staff.

Very unprofessional staff in the checking and boarding. There was no space for my carry-on bag, which is understandable for a full flight. However, the rudeness in answering my questions about my bag were unnecessary. Shaming and threatening a passenger to be left behind was something I had never experienced (I am 57 years old and a Skymiles member) before. At a minimum, the boarding staff (Krystal Mejia and her manager Dee) should undergo further training on cultural sensitivity and professional skills on speaking with passengers. Krystal, just because I have dark hair and “look Latina” does not mean I can speak Spanish. Your assumption and threatening words until the very ending of my boarding (door of the airplane) were not only unnecessary and stressful but something that a passenger should not experience before boarding.

The flight from PDX to New York was cancelled, and I got rebooked one day later. Because of this I missed a meeting at my final destination, EZE. I now need to stay longer in Argentina, and was told the tariff difference was $780 plus $150 penalty! I am not using my return ticket, and have purchased a one way ticket EZE-PDX for $606 with another airline. SHAMEFUL

My previous flight was late and did not connect properly. The gate was closed and I missed this flight.

This flight was late and did not meet the connecting flight.

5 hour flight - full flight - not enough room to use my computer - slightly delayed - Admirals club was excellent quality food, drink made up for flight seating. No food offerred on flight, you ahd to prebook.

Apart from the delay due to unforeseen circumstances. The leg from sjc to dfw was fine. It was the leg from dfw to orf that we encountered issues mainly due to the flight attendant crew not being friendly. We had two small children and we needed some assistance to warm up milk so the baby would sleep. The crew just didn’t get it and made things very difficult. One made a remark that the baby’s dirty diaper smell was a “gift” to the plane in a rude way. Normally I’d brush that off as a funny comment if the rest of the trip the attendants were helpful or understanding of the difficulty we faced. But that wasn’t the case. We were met with rudeness on the second leg. Whereas on the first leg the crew were so nice and helpful.

This was not the BA business class it used to be. Mediocre food, attendants seemed stretched thin. All the little luxuries that used to make BA business fun were missing. Flight delayed and the explanation given was they forgot to pick up crew - I hope I misheard! Transfer in LHR “sticky” - we thought we had way too much time at 3hours but it was needed. Next time will try different route.

Terrible. I hate flying with AA. There is always a high level of stress felt when I fly with them.

Flight From PHX to CVG was on time, very professional staff

The flight was 6 hr late and then they blamed it on the weather. All of the other planes were coming and going fine.

I had the exit seat with all the leg room I could ask for. Great!

Our second leg to Jackson WY was unable to land due to weather. We were flown back to Dallas after stopping in SLC. We were given hotel rooms and vouchers. We were told that we would be back on the same plane in the morning. Instead we were given a different flight with different seats. Not a good experience. No one knew what was going on.

We booked a direct flight. Spirit changed the flight to have a 9 hour overnight layover. Not pleased.

My flight was cancelled and I am stranded in another state

The crew was great but it felt gross how spirit charges you for every little thing. Picking your seat should be free (first come first served). Beverages and food I get. But picking where I sit? Gross.

Cancelled my flight , currently stuck in Houston and will likely miss my cruise

Had to board plan 2x due to lack of security check after 1st boarding

Flight was late taking off. I think the crew and pilots did a good job. It definitely worked for me. I would fly spirit again thank you.

Never made it to Atlanta due to the horrible policy of having to be at the gate 1 hour prior to departure. I was at the airport and the plane had not left Baltimore, but was not allowed to board.

Flight left very close to original projected time. Paid for checked bag weight overage (my fault). Plane was literally brand new & this was its 2nd flight. Seats were alittle uncomfortable (I'm 5'11 * 175lbs and was alittle cramped, & brand new seats had little cushion). Food options were good. Main thing was flight took off & landed on time.

Horrible experience. 1st we were over an hour late. 2nd waited to board for 2hrs 3rd got off/on plane 2 times 4th each time we got on the plane we sat in rhe plane for 1 to 2 hours with no updated or water 5th we were given literally 4 different answers as to why we werent in the air yet

Why Chapinero is the Best Place to Stay in Bogotá, Colombia

Why Chapinero is the Best Place to Stay in Bogota

The response to my piece  Bogotá is the #1 tourist destination in Colombia ranged from regional patriotism to flat out denial and disbelief. Despite the city’s 465 tourist attractions, the city has had a major marketing problem.

If you stay in Bogotá near the Parque 93, and take an Uber to a Gold Museum on a grey day, chances are you will scoff at comparisons to Berlin or London. Bogotá requires commitment, pavement pounding, local interaction and local advice to truly experience the best things to do in Bogotá .

Guide books can barely do the city justice. Here’s the thing, I don’t envy the guys at in the IDT Bogotá marketing department , because the most interesting parts of Bogotá are everything that happens in between the tourist attractions, and that is difficult to describe.

They have made a couple attempts at capturing the essence of Bogotá, including the 2013 Infinite Possibilities music video , that feels like a bohemian, Macklemore music video and Surpass Your Expectations video in 2015 that is actually pretty good, but comes across a bit too clean shaven.

It turns out the best place to stay to experience Bogotá properly, is also in between all of the tourist attractions, Chapinero. In particular Chapinero Central & Chapinero Alto. Here’s why you should reconsider staying in La Candelaria.

About 95% of the best things to do in Bogotá are located in this triangle of stars. Don’t sit in traffic or limit yourself to experiencing Bogotá from just one of these zones. You are going to need to travel across major sections of the megacity to see the most interesting areas. Centrality is king.

Star 1: Parque 93 (Fine dining, luxury shopping), Zona Rosa (Zona T, Andino, Calle 85 Nightlife, Andres DC ), Zona G (Gourmet Restaurant District), Financial Center (Calle 72)

Star 2: Centro (Plaza Bolivar, Museo del Oro, Museums, Galleries, Commerce), La Candelaria (Backpacker mecca, Museo de Botero, Colonial neighborhood), La Candelaria (Backpacker Mecca, Museo de Botero, Colonial neighborhood), Monserrate (Church & Lookout towering above Bogotá), Centro Internacional (Modern, urbanized, financial hub), La Macarena (Bohemian, restaurants, local)

Star 3: Salitre (Residential, upper middle class neighborhood), El Dorado Airport, Corferias Conference Center, Calle 26 Multinational business parks. US Embassy

Regardless if you get around by cheap taxis, the Transmilenio or Uber, Chapinero will position you the best place geographically and logistically in Bogotá. Why stay in a hotel when you can get your own  furnished apartment in Bogotá and live like a local for 30% less than a hotel.

Chapinero, Bogota

It’s trending

Vegetarian restaurants, Head shops, indie Coffee shops, Colombian-grown organic markets, a metric ton of student bars, urban fashion boutiques, culturally adventurous live gig bars / restaurants , Theatron the largest open-minded, LGBT club in South America and Video Club, an ultra-cool electronic club are all just a fraction of the Chapinero scene which is rich in entrepreneurial spirit and experimental, new wave products & services.

Just one example (plenty more in our locals guide to Bogotá ), Matik-Matik is a culturally independent events space in a refurbished garage that has held 650 alternative music events & performances.

Sure, if your budget is high-end and your style is traditionally refined, position yourself on Parque 93, or Parque Virrey, but as in many Latin American cities, their first attempt of luxury in a globalized world, usually feels a bit too… foreign.

The park-side locales of Parque 93 are now occupied by some local chains and Carls Jr, Starbucks, McDonalds, Renault Cafe and a shopping mall. In my opinion, it is one of the most over-rated areas to stay in Bogotá. Chapinero has been a quiet breeding zone for edgier, local entrepreneurs setting up shop in unique, unconventional spaces.

A restaurant with 3 chefs, and one table , modern Colombian fusion cuisine , one the last big tejo clubs , the best  live music clubs , and full of places that exemplify the famous Bogotá nightlife . As Colombia goes mainstream, and the current foreigner hotspots go tourist-centric & cookie-cutter, Chapinero may be the best place to experience authentic modern Colombian culture.

Why not eat fried chicken everyday? Why not have friends that think exactly the way you do? Why not marry your sister? Because humans need diversity. We learn and grow stronger from it. It’s the sole reason why North Korea shuts down communication to the outside world. Foreign ideas evolve our thinking.

Chapinero is known as the Locality of Positive Diversity . It is not just the LGBT community that chooses to stay in Chapinero , it is a colorful selection of Colombians from all over the country, filled with characters and stories to spice up any visit to the corner bakery.

And its not just the people, the architecture is a mix of styles built by the well educated  Cachacos who traveled to Europe and the rest of the world, bringing back blueprints for magnificent country houses to be situated in estates between the old Centro and the village of Usaquen. Today the area is being redefined once again.

The restaurants are experimental, the people are alive, the streets are unpredictable, and 45% of the official locality of Chapinero is like this.
