Paramore cancels tour dates amid frontwoman’s struggle with lung infection

Paramore has canceled tour dates in Portland and Salt Lake City, the last two shows in its North America tour, as lead vocalist Hayley Williams battles a lung infection.

“After struggling through the last few shows and consulting with my doctor, we’re unfortunately realizing that it’s past the point of wanting to push through to put on a good show for all of you,” Williams wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday. “I’m now risking long term damage and I need to pay attention to my body.”

The rock band has been touring across the U.S. and Canada throughout 2023. It will continue on with shows in Europe and New Zealand.

Last week, to fans' surprise and thrill, NBA star Stephen Curry joined Paramore as a surprise guest at the band's Aug. 8 concert at San Francisco's Chase Center. He sang a few lines from "Misery Business," one of Paramore's hits from its second album, "Riot!"

Paramore was slated to perform at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland on Aug. 10 and the Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Aug. 13. The shows had also been previously postponed and rescheduled from their original dates in late July due to Williams' ongoing lung infection.

Refunds will be available for fans who have already purchased tickets for the canceled shows.

Though some fans expressed frustration about the tour cancellations, Williams received an outpouring of support in the comments of Paramore's post.

"Good. Rest. Get better. Your health is way more important!" alternative music artist Iniko commented.

"Your health is all we care about right now," actress Maggie Baird wrote.

"We are so sorry to all of you who were so patient with us as we rescheduled these and likely rearranged travel plans to still come out," Williams wrote in the post. "Thank you so much for your continued support."

Paramore has canceled the remainder of its North America tour after frontwoman Hayley Williams struggled with a lung infection during the last week of shows.

The “Misery Business” and “Still Into You” hitmakers had already postponed four concerts in July due to Williams’ lingering illness and apparently resumed their This Is Why Tour before she fully healed. Now, their shows in Oregon and Utah have been called off.

“We are so sorry to all of you who were so patient with us as we rescheduled these and likely rearranged travel plans to still come out. I physically can not go on,” Williams said in a Thursday statement on the band’s Instagram . “I know this isn’t great news for anyone. Thank you so much for your continued support.”

As emo nostalgia crests, Paramore returns, with a new sound and a healthy outlook

The band, now a trio led by singer Hayley Williams, is set to release its first album since 2017, following mental health and personnel struggles.

Sept. 28, 2022

The 34-year-old said she hoped a week off from performing and “a strict medicine routine” would allow her body to “heal enough to finish off this tour strong.” But now, she said, she’s beyond that point after revealing that she had been muscling through mid-July performances from Houston to L.A.

“I have been doing everything I can to fight this infection so we wouldn’t have to disappoint anyone with more news of postponements and cancellations,” the pop-punk star said. “After struggling through the last few shows and consulting with my doctor, we’re unfortunately realizing that it’s past the point of wanting to push through to put on a good show for all of you.

“I’m now risking long term damage and I need to pay attention to my body. With that in mind and with a heavy heart, we have to cancel our remaining shows in both Portland and Salt Lake City,” she said.

Refunds will be made available at the point of purchase.

The Grammy-winning singer embarked on the tour with co-songwriter and guitarist Taylor York and drummer Zac Farro in October to support the trio’s sixth studio album. Last week, the group was announced as the opening act for Taylor Swift’s juggernaut Eras Tour , with plans to join the “Anti-Hero” singer when she kicks off the 2024 European leg of the tour. (Paramore served as the supporting act when Swift launched Eras in March.)

Williams — who said she endured a week of “misery, sadness, and bellyfuls of antibiotics and steroids” during her illness — previously defended the band’s decision to postpone shows in San Francisco, Seattle and Oregon last month. Critics, whom she dubbed “internet bros,” lambasted her online and pointed out that older rock acts such as Metallica, Iron Maiden and Dave Grohl pushed through their respective shows with severe ailments.

“internet bros have been pressed by my proximity to rock music and all its subgenres since 2005,” Williams countered last week on Instagram stories. “the only thing thats changed is the platform from which they spew their ignorance. don’t think for a second your fav bands – metal or punk or otherwise – endorse your weird incel ass lifestyle. so many of these bands have stood side stage at our shows and treat us with respect. why? bc they aren’t threatened by a strong woman front a great band in a completely diff genre of music.”

“crying from laughing at myself i love when i have so so so much time,” Williams added. Earlier, she had pointed out, “Touring is different at 34 than it was at 16, when leaving home felt like the greatest escape.”

Earlier this week, NBA superstar Steph Curry was the fan the band members selected to join them onstage at their rescheduled show at San Francisco’s Chase Center. The Golden State Warriors point guard took the mic and nailed the lyrics of their signature song, “Misery Business.”

On Wednesday, the band played its last show of the tour at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. The next Paramore show is scheduled for Oct. 6, when the band is set to play the New Yorker Festival. Performances are planned to resume in November in New Zealand and Australia, before the band heads to Europe with Swift between May and August 2024.

Paramore Postpone + Reschedule Four Tour Dates Due to Illness, Share Statements

Due to an undisclosed illness "within the touring party," Paramore announced that initially one show was going to be postponed and rescheduled, later leading to a total of four immediate dates to be pushed to mid-August.

On Saturday (July 22) the band shared a message indicating that their San Francisco show that was supposed to take place that day was being moved to Aug. 7 because of an illness.

The following day, the band who is on tour supporting their new album  This Is Why issued another update , noting that another three stops would be rescheduled "after much deliberation, in the interest of our health and the ability to put on a show you all deserve."

In addition to the San Francisco gig, shows in Seattle, Washington as well as Portland, Oregon and Salt Lake City, Utah (originally booked for July 24, 25 and 27, respectively) have now been bumped to Aug. 9, 10 and 13, respectively.

Paramore also apologized to their fans in San Francisco for the "last minute announcement," explaining, "We tried everything in our ability to put on the show last night." They also acknowledged that fans spent hours waiting in line and traveled sizable distances to attend the show.

"We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused," Paramore added.

The four-piece group lamented the reality and noted that postponing a show is not a decision that is made lightly and that moving any dates at all is "the last thing we want to do."

"We love you, we are sorry, and we hope to see you soon," Paramore concluded.

Paramore cancels remaining US tour dates amid Hayley Williams' lung infection

paramore tour rescheduled

Hayley Williams ' health is forcing her to do less, not Paramore .

The band's lead vocalist announced on her Instagram Story Wednesday night following the group’s rescheduled show in Seattle that she would have to cancel the remaining two shows of Paramore's North American tour due to a lung infection.

"After speaking with our team and my doc, I know that trying to finish this tour is now going to come at a detriment to my health. My lungs are just not healing quickly enough to keep up," Williams wrote on her Instagram Story . "It got a little scary tonight."

The "Misery Business" singer continued, "We will have the team post an official statement ASAP but we are going to have to cancel the last 2 shows of the tour so I can get better finally. I know some of you are camping in Portland already so I just wanted to get this out there."

“I’m so sorry for all the chaos this has caused some of you. I really tried to kick this. Love you all," she concluded.

In an official statement shared Thursday, Williams wrote, “After my lung infection forced us to postpone 4 shows, I was hoping a week off of performing and a strict medicine routine would allow my body to heal enough to finish off this tour strong. I have been doing everything I can to fight this infection so we wouldn't have to disappoint anyone with more news of postponements and cancellations.”

The singer said that after "struggling" to perform and consulting her doctor, they made the realization that her infection is "past the point of wanting to push through to put on a good show for all of you."

"I’m now risking long term damage and I need to pay attention to my body," Williams wrote.

“I’m now risking long term damage and I need to pay attention to my body,” Williams said in her statement. “With that in mind and with a heavy heart, we have to cancel our remaining shows in Portland and Salt Lake City.”

She apologized to fans who she realized had likely rescheduled plans to attend the shows.

“I physically cannot go on,” she admitted. “I know this isn’t great news for anyone. Thank you so much for your continued support.”

The band is next scheduled to perform a sold-out show at the New Yorker Festival in October before heading to New Zealand and Australia in November and Europe next year.

Recent tour reviews

This is the third time I've seen this wonderful band but the first time I've actually paid to see them exclusively. The other two were at festivals.

What you see with Hayley Williams and her merry crew is what you get. A powerful, energetic, sometimes outrageous performance. The music they wrote in their first three albums contributes heavily to this. They made lively punk-pop music and their shows reflect that.

But something changed this time around. Paramore's most recent piece of work, After Laughter, completely changes direction from what they're historically used to providing. While it's a solid album in its own right, it doesn't blend well with the old stuff.

So the group has made a similar switch in their live shows. Two songs from RIOT!, one from Brand New Eyes, nothing from All We Know Is Falling in the setlist. After Laughter was played almost in its entirety, turning this more into a pop concert than a punk one.

Don't get me wrong, Hayley and crew still provide a great night of entertainment and their audiences are equally as explosive. It's just now expectations need to be managed accordingly. For some, this is the end of the line. For me? I'm not sure. But if you come looking for one of the best rock acts on the planet, you may leave feeling a little disappointed.

Absolutely amazing. I was standing and I was very close to the front. The whole stage presence of the band was incredible and Hayley Williams especially connected so well with the audience. I was looking foward to this show since September, and God was it worth the wait. I’ve seen a lot of bands in my life, but they are right up there with the likes of Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi and Guns n Roses. If all the concerts I’ve been to, this just might be my favourite yet.

And when Hayley chose someone from the crowd to come up on stage and sing Misery Buisness I was jumping as high as I could shouting “ Pick me, pick me!”. Although I was not picked, it didn’t matter, it was still in my eyes, the best band I’ve seen yet. Unfortunately I’m only 15 but if I could drive, I would’ve booked tickets for another show that same night.

Being able to jump and sing to songs like Still into You, Misery Buisness, Ignorance and That’s what you Get was an experience I could not have imagined to be any better. Thank you for an amazing show Paramore. I’ll see you next time

Thanks for the Memories BECAUSE THEY WERE SO GREAT | Monumentour 2014:

On August the 2nd, 2014, with a full bladder and a happy heart I arrived at the Austin360 amphitheater to live out a dream – See Fall Out Boy perform live.

After a brief visit to a way-too-hot Port O Potty and a little loss of dignity, that dream was well on its way to becoming true.

I’m sad to say that I missed the opening band (New Politics). I’m going to go ahead and put the blame for that one on my mom. She’s perpetually late to everything. And yes, that’s right ladies and gents, I do indeed go to concerts with my mom. She can hang 10x better than most people I know and we have virtually the same taste in music. Anyways, after finding our seats (because this was a seated venue which, *annoyed sigh*, we’ll get into another time) it was time for the second band to take the stage. And let me tell you, they made themselves known by firing confetti guns that nearly gave me a heart attack. FOUR TIMES. FOUR MINI HEART ATTACKS. I suppose I should probably tell you that the confetti firing band was Paramore. Maybe you’ve heard of them? Oh, who am I kidding? Everyone knows Paramore, and for good reason.

They’re music is totally energetic and now I can vouch that their performances are too. From the synchronized head banging during Misery Business to the cheesy “we’re all a family” speech, there wasn’t one boring moment during their set. They played both older and newer songs, keeping up the energy and excitement the whole time. Hayley and the boys are so cute when they interact. I have this fantasy that they eat pizza rolls and watch The Simpsons together when they’re not touring. Also, my crush on bassist, Jeremy Davis, only increased when I saw his dance moves. AND THE TATTOOS. MY GOODNESS.

Next up was a music video interlude which I am totally all for. Then, we all went home. JUST KIDDING. After the music videos, the stage lights were dimmed, a creepy voice started talking about fears, and from the center of the platform, four glorious human beings arose. Fall Out Boy started their performance by playing The Phoenix and from there played incredible song after incredible song (because that’s the only kind of song they write). They even did a Queen cover at one point and that is always okay in my book.

I have a lot of feelings about this band. I’ve been a fan since the days of guyliner (ehem, Pete) and novels-for-song titles. On one hand, they make me feel totally hardcore because of their bangin music but on the other hand, I feel like a gigantic puddle of fangirl because they’re all really adorable. I mean, at a certain angle, Joe looks like Patrick Dempsey circa Can’t Buy Me Love, and then you’ve got the precious teddy bear on drums. Andy wore a stoic, almost grumpy, face of concentration for most of the show only to smile and melt my heart at the end.

Next you have the ball of cheese that is Pete. He did most of the talking throughout the performance and the lil’ cutie spewed cliché after cliché about following your dreams and “choosing your own fucking happiness” and it was glorious.

Do I even need to explain Patrick’s preciousness? I swear, he and Johnny Depp are the only two people in the world who can work a fedora. I just want to hug him and cuddle him and kiss him gently on the forehead AND THEN HE HAD TO GO AND DO A THING LIKE BREAK OUT HIS DRUM SKILLS. Hot damn. He and Andy did an incredible drum sesh/ mash up thing with Jay Z’s 99 Problems. Super cool.

Overall, Fall Out Boy performed so well. I’m just sad I haven’t seen them perform live sooner. They seem like amazing people and they deserve every single fan that filled up the crowd.

Paramore Concerts Rescheduled Dates Announced: Band Sparks Fan Outrage

Paramore

Paramore concerts are being rescheduled recently after a member of the touring party fell ill. Initially, it was only the San Francisco show last Saturday night that was canceled, but after a new announcement, three more shows are being postponed.

Paramore Concerts Rescheduled Dates 2023

Sharing to Instagram  their announcement, Paramore emphasized that the move to reschedule the concerts was done in the interest of health and the "ability to put on a show that you deserve."

Notably, the postponed Paramore San Francisco concert was now rescheduled to Aug. 7, 2023.

"To San Francisco, we are sorry for the last minute-announcement yesterday. We tried everything in our ability to put on the show last night. We know that some of you waited in line for hours, traveled far distances, and moved around plans to be there," the band apologized . "We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused.

More so, the band also postponed their Seattle, Portland, and Salt Lake City concerts. The shows held respectively at the Climate Pledge Arena, Veterans Memorial Coliseum, and Vivint Arena, will now be taking place on August, 9, 10, and 13.

Twitter Error

"Previously purchased tickets for all shows are valid for their rescheduled dates. If you cannot attend the rescheduled date and would like a refund, instructions will be sent to all ticket purchasers and refunds will be offered in the next seven days," they announced .

The band was sincerely apologetic in their statement, assuring fans that they do not take postponements "lightly" like many would have assumed.

"The last thing we want to do is postpone a show" that we've all been looking forward to for months," they ended. "We love you, we are sorry, and we hope to see you soon."

Paramore Fans Furious Of Concert Postponement?

Meanwhile, on Instagram , fans of Paramore are furious about the recent concert postponement.

"You done pissed off my girlfriend and ruined our weekend, nice," a fan said.

"This would've been so nice to hear last night... rather than the cold Instagram story. Felt like a real slap in the face after a 5 hour drive," another shared.

"@paramore we appreciate you taking care of yourselves. Respectively. The issue is that the show was scheduled for a Saturday now it's on a Monday," someone commented.

Hayley Williams, Paramore

Paramore have been forced to cancel the final two dates on their U.S. tour due to singer Hayley Williams’ ongoing health issues. The singer announced the news in an Instagram Story on Thursday morning (Aug. 10) in which she revealed that the band’s shows at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland tonight and the Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Sunday (Aug. 13) have been called off as she continues to battle a lung infection.

Williams promised that the band would be posting an official statement about the show cancellations as soon as they could and she apologized to those fans who’ve already been camping out in Portland. “I’m so sorry for all the chaos this has caused some of you. I really tried to kick this s–t. Love you all,” she wrote.

The disappointing news came just days after Paramore made headlines in San Francisco when Golden State Warriors legend Steph Curry joined them on stage on Monday at the Chase Center to help Williams sing “Misery Business.” Curry nailed every lyric to the song’s bridge, bringing some unexpected passion to the key moment in the show when the band typically invites a fan up to help sing their signature hit.

“I watched his wildest dreams come true/ Not one of them involving you,” Curry yelled into the microphone after a count-in from Williams. This week was slated to be the final run of shows on the band’s This Is Why tour, which kicked off in October in support of Paramore’s sixth album of the same name.

“internet bros have been pressed by my proximity to rock music and all its subgenres since 2005,” she wrote in an Instagram Story last week. “I have a lung infection you soft s—! Not a broken limb… One you can sing with for 2 hours, another you cant. But worry not! The shows weren’t canceled, merely postponed a week. Maybe you should come out to one of them…  like Dave did.”

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Paramore has postponed four shows for their 2023 tour, including one in Salt Lake City, due to an illness.

The band was originally scheduled to perform at the Delta Center on July 27 — it has since been rescheduled to Aug. 13.

Their show in San Francisco was postponed on the day of the concert. It was originally supposed to take place on Saturday, but was moved to Aug. 7.

Other postponed shows included Seattle, which was moved from July 24 to Aug. 9, and Portland, which was moved from July 25 to Aug. 10.

The band put out a statement that said previously purchased tickets for all shows will be valid for their rescheduled dates.

All ticket purchasers will be provided instructions for receiving a refund if they cannot attend the rescheduled date. Refunds will be offered until July 30.

"To everyone affected by these postponements, please know that we do not take postponing a show lightly," the band wrote on social media. "The last thing we want to do is postpone a show that we've all been looking forward to for months. We love you, we are sorry, and we hope to see you soon."

It was not specified who within their group was sick, only that it was someone within their touring party.

The final round of the 2024 Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, was heavily delayed by inclement weather in the area , so much so that the first event of the Florida Swing will feature a Monday finish.

Play was suspended due to lightning in the area at 12:49 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon and the course quickly became unplayable after a downpour of rain flooded greens and fairways. The practice range was re-opened shortly after 3 p.m. ET as officials continued to gauge when players could return to action. There was a tornado warning for Palm Beach County Sunday afternoon, but not in the Palm Beach Gardens area.

Mother Nature was the only thing keeping Erik van Rooyen from making birdies in Sunday’s final round as the 34-year-old South African started his round with six consecutive birdies before adding two more on Nos. 8 and 10 to move into the lead at 14 under before play was stopped. Van Rooyen shot a tournament-record 7-under 28 on the front nine and was 8 under for the day in the 12th fairway when the horn blew to pause play.

The final round of the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches will resume at 4:20 p.m. ET. Players yet to start will add 3 hours, 30 minutes to their original final-round starting time. — PGA TOUR Communications (@PGATOURComms) March 3, 2024

The three players tied for the lead at 13 under – Shane Lowry, Austin Eckroat and David Skinns – were about 50 minutes away from starting the round when play was stopped. The last Monday finish at the Cognizant was in 2015, when Padraig Harrington beat Daniel Berger in a playoff. The delayed finish may also impact Monday’s star-studded Pro-Member at Seminole Golf Club in nearby Juno Beach, Florida.

Ticketing company denies responsibility for refunds to Donald Trump Jr’s postponed Australian tour

Ticketbud says money was sent directly to organisers Turning Point Australia, but it says money is only received after events are completed

A ticketing company has denied claims by the organiser of Donald Trump Jr’s postponed Australian tour that it is responsible for processing refunds, arguing Turning Point Australia received the money.

The eldest son of the former US president and Republican frontrunner for the 2024 US presidential election was due to speak at events in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne in July last year, but the event was initially postponed to September amid claims of visa difficulties.

Organisers, Turning Point Australia, said in September the event had been postponed to December because of a “scheduling conflict” with Trump Jr. In early December, ticket holders received another email stating the event would be moved to 2024.

Guardian Australia reported this week that some ticket holders were still waiting for requested refunds and the company had failed to respond to emails for a month.

Turning Point Australia’s founder, rightwing influencer Joel Jammal, said this week the responsibility for ticketing and refunds was with the ticketing companies, saying all money was held by those organisations until after the event.

Sign up for Guardian Australia’s free morning and afternoon email newsletters for your daily news roundup

“We have had several complaints from ticket holders that ticketing agencies are being slow in refunding tickets, and we are doing our best to investigate each case,” he said. “We have given each request an undertaking that their case will be dealt with and are holding the ticketing agencies to account on each case. We have successfully resolved and refunded over 2,000 individual cases to date.”

While Ticketek has processed refunds for the Sydney show, some customers for Brisbane and Melbourne shows who bought through Ticketbud had reported not receiving refunds despite multiple requests to Turning Point Australia.

A spokesperson for Ticketbud refuted Jammal’s claim on Thursday, stating the payments through the Ticketbud system go through Stripe and are paid to the organisers.

“Unfortunately, Ticketbud is not responsible for issuing refunds,” a spokesperson said.

“Event funds are processed by the payment processor Stripe, and sent directly to the organiser of the event. Event funds are never held or processed by Ticketbud directly. The funds are held by Stripe and the event organiser.”

after newsletter promotion

The spokesperson also disputed the claim that Turning Point Australia does not get the funds until after the event.

“Refunds are the sole responsibility of the organiser. Ticketbud, as an event registration and ticketing platform, does not control how the event is run and does not issue refunds on the event organisers’ behalf.”

Jammal and Stripe were approached for comment.

Jammal said this week that he is in the process of working through Trump Jr’s availability for this year, as well as the logistics for venues, and will make an announcement in March.

Turning Point Australia has not posted on its social media accounts since November. Jammal has not posted on Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, YouTube, X/Twitter or TikTok since November.

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

  • Guide to Russia

What can you do at Moscow City?

  • Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
  • See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow
  • Admire world-class architecture: Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers has distinctive architecture and design
  • Learn something new: Visit the Museum of High-Rise Architecture in Moscow or the Metro Museum

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

Photo by Alex Zarubi on Unsplash

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
  • Completed in 2017
  • Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!

  • 130m tall, 26 floors
  • Completed in 2001
  • Architect: Boris Tkhor

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

The Red Square and beyond: a guide to Moscow’s neighbourhoods

One of the world’s largest cities, Moscow is a true metropolis whose ancient neighbourhoods are interspersed with newly built high-rises, inhabited by people from all over the former Soviet Union.

It’s also the city of rings: the innermost is the Kremlin itself; further away are the former defensive rings, Boulevard Ring and Garden Ring; still further are the Third Ring Road and the MKAD, which delineates the city’s borders. There’s an ongoing joke that Moscow Mayor is the Lord of the Rings. Most sights are contained within the Garden Ring, although for some more authentic neighbourhoods one has to venture further out. To help you explore Moscow’s diversity, we picked our favourite ’hoods – but this list is by no means exhaustive.

Evening view of Moscow's Red Square from the Kremlin towards St Basil's Cathedral

The Red Square and around

It can be argued that Moscow, or even the whole of Russia, starts at the  Red Square  – it’s an absolute must-see for any visitor. After standing in line to check out Lenin’s granite  mausoleum , go to GUM , Moscow's oldest department store. Full of luxury shops, it’s famous for the glass roof designed by one of Russia’s most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov. Apart from architectural wonders, GUM has several places to eat including the Soviet-style cafeteria Stolovaya No 57 where you can sample mysterious-sounding delicacies such as the ‘herring in a fur coat’.

On the opposite side of GUM, Kremlin ’s walls and towers rise above the Red Square. Walk through the Alexander Garden  and past the grotto to the Kremlin’s entrance. It’s a treasure trove for any art and history lover: ancient gold-domed churches, icons galore and the resting place of Moscow tsars.

On the other side of the Red Square is Moscow's symbol,  St Basil's Cathedral with its multi-colored domes. Right behind it is the newly built Zaryadye Park , which showcases flora from all over Russia; another attraction is the floating bridge jutting out above the embankment and the Moscow river. A glass pavilion nearby hosts Voskhod , a space-themed restaurant with dishes from all 15 former Soviet Union republics. It’s a perfect spot for a classy evening meal and there’s often live music.

People chilling out at a pond in central Moscow on a summer day

Patriarch’s Ponds

The Patriarch’s Ponds (aka Patriki) is a historical neighbourhood, celebrated in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita . Located right off Tverskaya street, Moscow’s main thoroughfare, Patriki recently became the city’s most happening quarter. It has some of the most elegant architecture, including several buildings by art-nouveau genius Fyodor Shekhtel. Narrow streets here have a cozy feel, with recently widened sidewalks and bike lanes. In the summer it becomes party central.

Start by checking out free exhibitions or one of the cutting-edge performances at the experimental theatre Praktika . But make no mistake, the neighbourhood’s main attraction are its bars and restaurants. Patriki’s residents are well-off Russians and expats, so it’s no wonder that  Moscow’s recent culinary revolution started here. Uilliam’s , one of the pioneers of this foodie movement, still rules over the scene with its floor-to-ceiling windows. Also try AQ Chicken  for everything chicken-related, Patara  for a taste of Georgian cuisine, and Cutfish for some great sushi. Finish your gastronomic tour with original cocktails at Pinch or the Moscow outpost of NYC restaurant Saxon+Parole .

Old red-brick buildings of the former Arma factory in Moscow

Around Kursky train station

For a long time, Kursky train station was surrounded by semi-abandoned factories and the area was best avoided. It all changed in the late 2000s, when a dilapidated wine factory was turned into Winzavod , a mecca for fans of contemporary art. Today these red-brick buildings are occupied by some of Moscow’s leading galleries. After taking in all the art, pop in the small wine bar Barrell  for a glass from burgeoning wineries of Russia’s south or grab a bite at Khitrye Lyudi  cafe.

Right next to Winzavod is Artplay , another refurbished factory full of design and furniture shops and large exhibition spaces.  It’s also home to  Pluton , one of the latest additions to Moscow’s dance scene. Other Pluton residents are the multimedia art gallery Proun  and another lunch option,  Shanhaika , with authentic Chinese cuisine.

A short walk away is Arma, where a cluster of circular gas holders has been turned into offices, restaurants and clubs including Gazgolder  (it belongs to one of Russia’s most famous rappers, Basta). Apart from hip-hop concerts, Gazgolder organises regular techno parties that sometimes go non-stop from Friday to Monday.

Colourful facade and onion-shaped domes of a Russian Orthodox church in Moscow

If you’re interested in religious architecture, Taganka is the place to go. First of all, see the old Moscow at Krutitskoye Podvorye – one of those places where nothing seems to have changed in centuries. The monastery was founded in the 13th century, but in the 16th century it became the home of Moscow metropolitans and most of the surviving buildings are from that epoch. Take a tour of the grounds, and don’t miss the interior and icons of the Assumption Cathedral.

Your next stop is the Rogozhskoe settlement of ‘old believers’, a branch that split from Russian Orthodoxy in the 17th century. The settlement is dominated by an 80m-tall bell tower. The yellow-coloured Intercession Church, built in neoclassical style with baroque elements, has an important collection of icons. Next to the church grounds is the popular Trapeznaya cafeteria, with Russian food cooked using traditional recipes – a perfect spot for lunch.

A short ride away is Andronikov Monastery, which today houses the Rublyov Museum  in the old monks’ quarters. There’s a great collection of ancient Orthodox icons although none by Andrei Rublyov, who was a monk here in the 15th century. The main attraction at the monastery is the small Saviour’s Cathedral, considered the oldest surviving church in Moscow.

Finish the day at the craft-beer cluster around Taganskaya metro station. Varka offers both Russian and imported labels, with the Burger Heroes stand serving arguably the best burgers in town. Craft & Draft looks more like a respectable old-fashioned pub, with decent food, 20 beers on tap and a hundred types of bottled brews.

Elaborate facade with statues and balcony on a mansion in Moscow

Khamovniki is Moscow’s ancient textile district, named after the word kham  (a type of cloth). Two main thoroughfares, Ostozhenka and Prechistenka, cut through the neighbourhood parallel to each other. The former turned into the so-called ‘Golden Mile’ of Moscow in the 1990s, with the highest real-estate prices and some of the best examples of new Russian architecture, while the latter is still mostly lined up with impressive 19th-century mansions.

Khamovniki is somewhat of a literary quarter, as several museums devoted to Russia’s best-known writers – among them  Leo Tolstoy , Alexander Pushkin  and Ivan Turgenev – popped up here during the last century. There’s also plenty to see for an art lover. The  Multimedia Art Museum regularly hosts exhibitions by some of the best photographers from all over the world, as well as contemporary art. Several galleries, including RuArts  and Kournikova Gallery , have also found home in Khamovniki.

When you’ve had your fill of literature and art, stop by Gorod Sad on Ostozhenka, an outpost of a local health-food chain, and order dishes such as pumpkin soup or grilled vegetables salads. Afterwards, head to Dom 12 , which is located just off Ostozhenka street. This restaurant and wine bar is frequented by the city’s intellectuals and its schedule includes lectures, book presentations and film screenings, while in the summer guests migrate to a lovely courtyard.

Letovo Schoolcampus, Moscow, Russia

Letovo, the dream came true.

Letovo School is a special school for gifted and motivated children aged 12 to 17. An idea to create the school came from entrepreneur and philanthropist Vadim Moshkovich: ‘My dream was to offer talented children from all over the country access to high-quality education, regardless of their parents’ financial means. This school makes it possible for them to continue their studies at the 10 best universities in the country or at one of the top 50 universities in the world.’

Landscape-inspired design, shape and brickworks Located in Novaya Moskva, southwest of Moscow, the campus sits atop a beautiful plot of land that slopes down to a forest-lined river. Distinctive level variations were applied in and around the school to integrate the architecture into the landscape.

The shape of the large complex brings it down to a human scale for the children: the building appears to dance across the landscape due to its dynamic design. Due to the perspective effect one only ever sees part of the building's full size when walking around, which gives the impression of a refined scale. The building’s contours and flowing curves create surprising indoor and outdoor spaces as well.

To accentuate this curved shapes and to have the building blend into the landscape brick seemed a rather obvious choice. The natural ingredients of brick such as clay, sand water, air and fire gives the school building a natural setting as if the building has been there endlessly. Brick with its solid and sturdy exposure. We choose a sandy light colored brick so in all wheather circumstances it will have a warm glance.

The heart of the school: the central hub

The central hub is the place where day-to-day life at the school unfolds. This flexible, transformable space will be used throughout the day as an informal meeting place. The dance studio on the ground floor can be transformed through a few simple adjustments into a theatre with a stage, a cosy living room or an auditorium that can accommodate 1,000 people for special events such as graduation ceremonies and large celebrations, as seen at the grand opening. This central hub connects the building’s three wings: the art wing, the south wing with science- and general-use rooms and the sports wing.

Learning environment with a diversity in working spaces

Letovo envisioned an innovative and modern take on existing education in Russia. In the spatial design, this perspective translates into space for theoretical education as well as special areas for group work and independent study in the tapered building wings. In the library wing there are silence spaces workshop spaces and a debating room. These are all supportive to the student’s personal development.

Sports programme

In addition to the extended sports outdoor facilities, the indoor supply of sports facilities is substantial. These cover fitness rooms, martial arts rooms, a swimming pool, a small and a large sports hall. Around the sports hall there’s an indoor running track which can be used throughout the year. It is available to school staff and external users as well.

Letovo Schoolcampus, Moscow, Russia / Photography © NARODIZKIY

The interior, also designed by atelier PRO, is tailored to the aims of the ambitious programme. The design of the interior also focuses extensively on the various spaces where students can go to chill and meet up with friends. The extreme cold in this area makes the school’s indoor atmosphere important for relaxation.

Ambitous learning environment

The Russian client has established a private, non-profit school which aims to be the most prestigious school in the country and to offer the best educational programme through a Russion and an IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum. Students’ personal development is paramount, with the school adopting a holistic approach. It is a true learning environment that provides scope for a range of disciplines, areas of interest and recreational opportunities to foster children’s development. This aim is supported by the campus facilities and functions.

In December of 2016 the architectural project of school was awarded by Architectural Council of Moscow as the best project in the sphere of education and health care.
