  • Loose-fitting, layered clothing that can accommodate varying temperatures will be most comfortable. Quick-dry material is best for hot days outside and a warmer layer may be needed for chilly evenings and early mornings.
  • Comfortable closed-toes shoes, such as sneakers or lightweight hiking boots, are best for walking during the day.
  • Sun protection is very important. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Occasional rain showers are common from April through August, so lightweight rainwear may be necessary depending on the timing of your trip.
  • Insect repellent, binoculars, and a flashlight are highly recommended.

  • On the tour extension in Zimbabwe, cornmeal is an important staple used for making porridge and sadza , which is thicker and resembles Italy’s polenta. Rice, greens, potato, pumpkin, peanuts, black-eyed peas, and local fruits are popular additions to any meal.
  • South Africa operates on 220–240 volts and uses a Type M plug with two small round pins and one larger round pin.
  • South Africa experiences multiple periods of load shedding, or rolling blackouts, due to the demand for electricity exceeds its ability to produce. Travelers should only be impacted for brief moments as all accommodations are equipped with generators and tour activities should not be impacted.
  • Zimbabwe (on the tour extension) operates on 220-240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three large, flat pins.

  • From November through March, when it’s noon in New York, it’s 7pm on tour. From April through October, when it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • The currency you will be using on your tour is the South African rand. (In Zimbabwe on the tour extension, it’s recommended that you use U.S. dollars or South African rand.)
  • You may be able to purchase South African rand in advance from your local bank or a foreign currency exchange retailer, such as Travelex.
  • Please note, travelers cannot import or export more than $25,000 in South African rand and may be required to claim any additional foreign currency at customs.
  • We recommend that you carry as little local cash as possible as well as small amounts of U.S. dollars (only crisp bills printed in 2004 or later).
  • ATMs are not readily available in the more rural areas.
  • Major North American credit cards are accepted but can be difficult to use in remote locations (Visa is the most widely accepted).
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $8USD to $10USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • We also recommend tipping the equivalent of $5USD per person for your local wildlife guides per game excursion and the equivalent of $2USD per local guide if applicable.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Gratuities for baggage handling are included in the price of your tour.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information. International travel is, by its very nature, unpredictable. We must therefore reserve the right to change this itinerary, without advance notice, to meet with local conditions at the time of travel. We appreciate your understanding. Please refer to our website for Terms & Conditions, dates, and prices.

FAQs about Cape Town & Kruger Family Safari

  • Take a trip up table mountain
  • Visit Robben Island
  • Hike Lions Head
  • Shop at the V&A waterfront
  • Have a Beach day at Clifton
  • Go wine tasting in Kirstenbosch, Durbanville, Stellenboch and Franschhoek
  • Safari lodges have guest rooms similar to a hotel with en-suite bathrooms. They are comfortably furnished with facilities normally associated with a hotel rooms, except your rooms are normally set in beautiful wilderness settings, with nature and wildlife around.
  • Tented lodges have rooms which are tents on a platform and with a roof and also have en-suite facilities with showers, flush toilets and hot water. Basically all the amenities of a hotel room, except canvas walls and roof.
  • The boutique lodges and camps can be very stylish and smart in terms of design and decor, often with very spacious rooms and even going so far in some cases as having plunge pools for each room.
  • Eco-camps and smaller tented camps have insect-proof tents with en-suite facilities including a safari shower and flush toilet.  They give a more authentic safari experience but the tents are comfortably furnished with proper beds and you don’t need to bring your own sleeping bag! The emphasis is usually on having excellent guides and great wildlife viewing away from the crowds. Guests often eat together and people travelling alone usually say that they found the atmosphere friendly and enjoyed meeting other like-minded travellers around the campfire in the evening or at dinner.
  • The Adventure Camps are a budget option with guests bringing their own sleeping bags and towels. Accommodation is in small dome tented with a mattress on the floor. Each tent has its own nearby cubicle with a flush toilet, safari shower, and wash basin. The Adventure Camps are suitable only for those who don’t mind “real camping” and can put with some degree of “roughing it”. Apart from the accommodation in simple dome tents, the meals and the guiding are the same standards as the higher quality camps and game drives are in 4x4 safari vehicles. For those on a limited budget, the Adventure Camps are a good alternative to the big tourist lodges and minibus tours for those for whom the safari experience is more important than hotel accommodation.
  • Parents who are travelling with their child but not their spouse and those who wish to send their child on a trip accompanied by someone other than a parent or unaccompanied require an unabridged birth certificate. (It does not affect those travelling within South Africa.)
  • An Unabridged certificate is a certificate that reflects the particulars of both parents of the child. All children born in South Africa after 14 March 2013 were issued with a valid unabridged birth certificate automatically and free of charge.
  • Everyone born before that and those from countries who do not automatically issue an unabridged certificate must apply for the document well before their travel date.
  • The application process for Unabridged Birth Certificate are as follow; You can apply at your nearest Home Affairs office where your Biometric information will be varied. You will need your ID book along as well as your child’s ID number.
  • All documents submitted must be originals or certified copies. The Unabridged Birth Certificate costs R75. It can take up to eight weeks to acquire an Unabridged Birth Certificate from the date of application.
  • Family safaris in Africa are a worthwhile and meaningful experience. Aside from spending quality time with your nearest and dearest under a wide blue African sky, a safari in Africa offers invaluable experiences including unique cultural experiences, memorable wildlife sightings, and the opportunity to learn more about nature.
  • Yes, you have to be over 18 to book a trip to South Africa .
  • Some areas won’t suit the family and it's also wise to be aware of malaria in others, however, South Africa has a few malaria-free safari locations and there are other safari lodges and bush camps throughout Africa that cater to young children and toddlers, just do the research beforehand.

On the Garden Route, we look for the “Marine Big Five,” including southern right whales, go kayaking in Knysna Lagoon, and take an intertidal moonlight meander with a marine biologist in search of bioluminescence. We finish up with an unforgettable Big Five safari on private game lands adjoining the epic Kruger Reserve.

What the Trip is Like

Although this is not a particularly rigorous trip, we still recommend that each participant undertake a program of physical conditioning. Daily walking or regular hiking, jogging, and stair-climbing are excellent preparation for the trip.

Generally, South Africa has a mild climate due to its southerly latitude and the high altitude of its interior regions (above 3,000 feet in altitude on average). There are starkly different climatic zones: the Cape region has a Mediterranean climate with mild summer temperatures averaging in the 70s (“summer” in the Southern Hemisphere is our winter), while the lowveld has a subtropical climate with warm to hot temperatures in summer and cooler evenings.

The safari camps and lodges in our program offer excellent game viewing year round. Most rainfall occurs usually between December and February in the form of afternoon or evening thunderstorms. In general, the climate is warm with cool nights in “winter” (March-August in the Southern Hemisphere).

Cape Town's peak season is September to March, with highs of 65°F in September up to 80°F in February. September to February, there is little rain. Southeasterly winds occur in November and early December. In the cooler months, the daily highs are in the mid-60s. The highest rainfall is in July and August.

During game drives, we can at times get quite close to wild animals. Being very quiet improves everybody's chances of observation. In the interest of safety, your Trip Leader explains limitations on movement while on game drives, in the safari vehicles, and around camp. Incidents with wild animals are extremely rare on safaris, but no camping safari can guarantee immunity from such incidents. Wilderness Travel is not to be held responsible for incidents involving the behavior of wildlife.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India
  • Small ship cruises

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

  • Our African safaris
  • Costa Rica Wildlife

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

  • Tuscany & the Cinque Terre
  • Argentina: Hikes and Estancias of Patagonia
  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as  Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin,  are Trip Level 3.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

  • Ultimate Patagonia
  • Hiking the Spanish Pyrenees

Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

South Africa Road Trip Itinerary – From Kruger to Cape Town

trip cape town kruger

We had slightly less than two weeks to drive all the way from Kruger National Park to Cape Town while aiming to check off the most insta-worthy spots along the way. Being a big fan of safaris and wildlife through National Geographic, spending three days at Kruger was my dream “Disneyland” trip. Read all about our three-day self-drive Kruger itinerary here . This post is a continuation of the Kruger self-drive and will probably give you an idea of what to expect during your road trip through this part of South Africa. Alternatively, you can also do the trip the other way round from Cape Town to Kruger. We chose to to slow down and wind down at the lovely Cape Town towards the end of the trip.

We chose a full size SUV as we were travelling in a group of four. Car rental was booked online with AVIS and collected at Johannesburg Airport. We decided on a Toyota Fortuner with about 35,000 kilometres mileage on it. The rental experience was however, not a particularly great one. This was due to the unethical up-sell of Avis Safe Drive that came with a WiFi device. It was sugar-coated as free and for our safety, furthermore AVIS also charged for a one-way drop off fee for the device! Long story short, the additional amount of about S$200 was refunded after an official complaint to the branch manger.

Despite what happened, I would say AVIS is still one of the more decent car rental companies in South Africa. My advice is to decline all add-ons at the counter and stick to whatever price and package that you have booked prior to your trip. Try reading through reviews of the different car rental companies in South Africa and you will get what I mean. You will really want to stick to one of the “better ones”.

I recommend to get a car with higher ground clearance as you will definitely need the extra height for a better view during Kruger self-drive or other private reserves. This is if you are self-driving, otherwise you can probably stick to a regular sedan or hatchback. It makes more sense to rent a smaller, more fuel-efficient car if you are traveling alone or as a couple.

P1180494

We covered almost 4000KM with Johannesburg airport as the starting point. We planned a day trip through Swaziland which is a landlocked country within South Africa. It was a really nice experience and great opportunity to collect yet another stamp in our passports!

Day 1 – Swaziland

Start your day early by leaving through one of Kruger southern gates. We left via Malelane gate because it is nearest to the land crossing into Swaziland at Jeppes Reef. Take the MR1 into Mbabane which is the capital of Swaziland. After the border crossing, the drive is scenic which takes you to higher altitudes through the smaller villages. Soon after, you will realize that the road you are traveling on is also the main highway into the capital.

P1180189

Lunch break in Mbabane where you can experience the life of the locals in the capital as compared to the villages outside the city. Swaziland is a good place to fuel up as the prices are cheaper here. Swaziland uses South African Rand so you do not need to worry about currency conversion .

If you have more time in your itinerary, spend the night in Swaziland and continue your drive to St Lucia early the next morning. Otherwise, you can head to St Lucia after lunch.

P1180198

Day 2 – St Lucia

This is officially hippo county because there are “beware of hippos” signs all over. Hippos roam the streets at night. It is also the hub to iSimangaliso Wetland Park, which is previously known as Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park.

I suggest to take the boat cruise that goes around the St Lucia Estuary, where you can see hippos and crocodiles living in the same stretch of river. We went with Heritage Tours and Safari and really enjoyed our time on the river. The guide was experienced and able to educate us on the history and life of wildlife in St Lucia.

Depending on the timing of your cruise, have your lunch before setting off for Durban.

P1180231

Day 3 – Durban

Durban is the third most populous city in South Africa after Johannesburg and Cape Town and the largest city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. It is a nice coastal city with miles of coastlines for surfers and swimmers to experience the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

It is a great place to try the local South African cuisine or seafood since it is just next to the ocean. We had our dinner at Moyo Ushaka, recommended by our Airbnb host and it was one of the more memorable dinners we had.

Spend the night at Durban. We lived in an Airbnb penthouse with a gorgeous view over the harbour.

P1180315

Day 4 – Mthatha, East London

Start your day earlier because there is significant distance (680KM) to cover in order to reach East London. Alternatively, you can spend the night at Port Edward or Port Shepstone to break up the trip.

*Tip this is where you can make a side trip to Lesotho, another landlocked country like Swaziland. We did not do it due to time constraint.

P1180365

Mthatha street scene

Continue on the N2 from Durban and the route cut inland after Port Shepstone towards Mthatha. Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first president was grew up in Mthatha. Ironically, the city is also one of the top ten most dangerous cities in South Africa. Another thing to note is that this part of the N2 is also the most dangerous highway in South Africa due to high traffic volumes, negligent driving and animals on the road.

Although we are grateful to be safe from any road accidents but had our own little encounter where we almost became victims of a road toll scam in Mthatha (not once but twice within a span of ten minutes). The scam was fairly straight forward, a guy in a yellow vest came up to us at a traffic light when we entered the city. He explained that the road toll station was not working and we had to pay the fee at the petrol station. As we drove closer to the station, another guy in the same yellow vest gestured for us to drive in. Feeling uneasy about the whole situation, we decided not to drive into the petrol station as we felt that it could be a scam. We noticed that the previous guy only seemed to stop vehicles based on who was behind the wheel. It was pretty obvious we they were picking on foreigners so we did not want to take our chances and drove on quickly. We encountered a similar scam again when exiting the city, where another guy was gesturing for us to lower our window presumably to repeat the same story but this time, I just nodded my head and drove off (like a boss lol).

Spend the night at East London.

P1180332

These coloured houses are a feature of the townships along the N2

P1180343

Day 5 – Port Elizabeth, Knysna

Continue towards Storms River Bloukrans Bridge where it is the start of the Garden Route . You will pass by Port Elizabeth which is where most people fly into to start the Garden Route to Cape Town. Towns like Jeffreys Bay and Plettenberg Bay have lagoon-facing accommodations which have awesome views of the sea.

Stay the night at Knysna if you have a tight schedule if not you can spilt your days around the area.

P1180491

Day 6 – Mossel Bay

As you continue towards Mossel Bay, the scenery starts to become more interesting since it is part of the Garden Route. Check out Map Of Africa View Point right before reaching Kaaimans River Railway Bridge which boasts an outstanding lookout of the coastline. Head inland towards Oudtshoorn to visit an ostrich farm. I recommend to purchase a meal together with the introduction farm ride. Within the compound, there are free roaming ostriches and emus. If you are lucky, you can also see the new chicks!

Spend the night at Mossel Bay.

P1180382

Day 7 – Hermanus

From Mossel Bay, you can choose to take highway 2 straight to Hermanus or take the side trip to Cape Agulhas , the most southern tip of the Africa continent. We tasted delicious fish and chips from a beach shack there, the kind that you would want to spend the whole afternoon lazing in. If you do this, I recommend to head to De Kelders to stay the night so that you have time for a fantastic whale watching experience. Whales can be literally seen from the coast because they swim into the bay during certain periods of the year. If you are into shark cage diving, you can head to Gansbaai . It holds a dense population of great white sharks.

Spend the night at De Kelders or Hermanus.

P1180550

Day 8 – 11 – Cape Town

I recommend to spend three to four days in Cape Town because there are simply so many things to do here! As you drive into Cape Town, don’t miss out on a classic winery tour at Stellenbosch . There are plenty of wineries so take your pick. We chose Ken Forrester due to the good reviews found online.

P1180712

Ken Forrester Vineyard

Choose your hike to the top of Table Mountain or Lion’s Head . I chose the Lion’s Head hike because it’s equally breathtaking and you get views of table mountain. If you are up for the Table Mountain choice, I recommend to hike up and take the cable car down to give some comfort to your knees.  Lion’s Head trail can be completed in half a day or so but also require a good amount of fitness to get to the top. There is also some scrambling and vertical ladders to climb along the trail.

P1180859

Take a half-day trip to Cape Peninsula (including Cape of Good Hope) through Simon’s Town. Note that Cape of Good Hope is not the most southern part of Africa, but Cape Agulhas. Visit Boulder’s Beach to see the best wild African penguin colony. They are on the verge of extinction and can only be found in Southern Africa. I assure that this experience triumphs watching penguins in marine parks and zoos.

P1180737

African Penguins at Boulder’s Beach

P1180779

The trendy colouful houses are in Bo Kaap , a muslim settlement with a rich history. Walking around the neighbourhood you will tread along cobbled streets and be greeted with fun-looking houses. As you venture further out, there are plenty of nice restaurants and cafes for foodies and coffee-addicts.

Days 8 to 12

Fly from Cape Town to Nelspruit on the morning of Day 8 to start your safari in the Kruger National Park . Our guide will collect you from the airport and transfer you to the Kruger National Park. If the budget is tight, it is also possible to fly to Johannesburg on the evening of Day 7 for an overnight stay at an airport hotel, ready to set off on safari early in the morning.

Enjoy four to five days on safari in South Africa's most famous game reserve, where the Big Five roam free. One option is to join a guided Kruger Park open vehicle safari with us, based at one of the national park camps, using comfortable bungalow accommodation. These are affordable, scheduled, small-group safaris with a maximum of nine people on board.

Open vehicle game drives in Kruger Park

If you're not on a budget, another option is to spend your safari at a luxury private game lodge in the Greater Kruger Park. The private game lodges inside Kruger Park and surrounding private game reserves offer a fantastic luxury safari experience, with all meals and open vehicle game drives included in the cost. Guided bush walks are also possible.

The choice of accommodation will depend on your budget, interests and availability for your required dates. Prices at private safari lodges vary greatly, depending on the location and level of luxury. You can also consider a Combo Safari - combine an affordable, two-night guided Kruger Park safari with two nights at a private safari lodge in one of the adjacent private reserves like the Sabi Sand or Timbavati Game Reserve.

Game viewing in a private game reserve, Greater Kruger

On the final day, return to Johannesburg International Airport by road transfer or by plane (five hours by road or a one-hour flight). If you travel by road transfer, you can expect to be in Johannesburg by 17h00 or 18h00 on Day 12.

Customise this trip idea

This is a travel idea, not a fixed itinerary. You can spend an extra night at any of the destinations suggested, and you can drop or add destinations to this itinerary. If you swap the order of these destinations, you may have to spend at least one stop-over night in Johannesburg.

Approximate cost

The cost can vary considerably, depending on the choice of accommodation and date of travel. For example, safari lodges in Greater Kruger private game reserves range in price from below 400 US$ per person per night to more than 2,000 US$ per person per night at the top luxury lodges.

The budget estimate below is based on affordable accommodation at Victoria Falls and Cape Town and our 5 Day Best of Kruger Safari , excluding local flights between destinations.

The mid-range estimate below is based on mid-range accommodation at Victoria Falls and Cape Town and a mid-range private lodge in Greater Kruger, excluding local flights between destinations.

Itinerary Details

FIRST-CLASS | TAILOR-MADE: Explore the most beautiful regions of South Africa on this adventure. Explore the Western Cape before embarking on an African safari through a private game reserve in Kruger National Park.

Cape and Kruger Escape

This 9-day South African safari takes you from Cape Town to Kruger National Park, discovering the sights and experiences only South Africa can offer.

A warm African welcome brings you into the Mother City, watched over by Table Mountain, with fantastic wildlife regions, gardens, and wineries all on the doorstep. You’ll have three full days to explore, which is just enough for a taste of Cape Town. Consider a tour of the Winelands or the Cape Peninsula. Don’t expect to see the Big 5 (they tend to show up later on this trip), but the Cape is home to its own wildlife including ostriches, the penguins of Boulders Bay, and fearsome great white sharks you can dive with just offshore. For a more cultural taste of Cape Town, explore apartheid history on Robben Island, or embark on a ‘Walk to Freedom’ tour. Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, johannesburg to sabi sands – evocative safari welcomes.

Into the wild, the plane touching down in the Sabi Sands as elephants watch on. Gaze towards the horizon and giraffe poke their heads above the trees. Transferring to the lodge, you spot springbok jumping around, their fearful antics suggesting that a predator is nearby. Turn a corner and the pride sits serenely, the yawn of a lioness indicating that now isn't the time for a hunt. Sabi Sands is a reserve that borders Kruger National Park, offering all the animals of its larger neighbor in a secluded area. It's an ideal safari starting point, filled with a diversity and abundance that can be seen on short game drives. The transfer to the lodge is just the start, a great myriad of four-legged mammals discovered before you've even checked in.

Relax and take lunch at the lodge, continuing the game viewing from a private verandah overlooking the Sand River. Then an afternoon game drive traverses the famed haven of Africa's big five. On the first day, there's often an anticipation of seeing the most famous. Sabi Sands excels on this point. A pair of rhino gracefully wanders past the vehicle, entertaining with their serene stares. Buffalos block the trail, rumbustious beasts that huff noisily. An elephant pride drifts across the landscape, the baby jumping around as it chases a warthog. Now a lion pride, chiefs of their realm, lounging just a couple of meters from the vehicle. Returning to the lodge, there's a flicker in the trees, a tail wiggling around. Look closer. It's a leopard, as content as could be, sleeping with one eye open. While a safari never guarantees you can see certain animals, Sabi Sands always has the abundance to satisfy.

What's Included:

Sabi Sands – The Big Five and So Much More

Dawn breaks and the Sabi Sands is alive. A herd of elephant is splashing in the Sands River, throwing up ladles of mud and squirting jets of water. They're the attraction as you begin breakfast. But as you sip on a second coffee, a white rhino arrives, its horn a showcase of elegance and power. Inyati Safari Lodge's superb positioning means that the safari never stops; there's always something in the Sand River below, from wallowing hippo pods to an eclectic cast of antelope. Every animal must come to drink. So from a relaxed luxury suite, you can watch the Kruger circle of life unfold. It's particularly mystical at dawn and in the early hours of the evening when spotlights ensure you can savor the nocturnal action of the park.

Over the next two days, you enjoy morning and afternoon activities, coinciding with when wildlife is most active. In a four-wheel drive vehicle, you loop across the landscape, initially following the river before crossing an expanse of the iconic savannah. Impala graze tentatively, lionesses wander menacingly, and you're never far from the antics of the park's primate cast. Baboons are shouting ferociously. But why? It doesn't appear to be a conflict between troops. Drive to the space the baboons have vacated, and a cheetah walks furtively through the grass. Spots initially disappear before a slender neck emerges from the green, a look of determination in the mother's eyes. With a Kruger safari, you're not just admiring the different animals. You're immersed in their interaction, appreciating how everything is linked, from baboons warning impala to buffalos and hippos staring each other down beneath your balcony.

Sabi Sands – Game Drives and a Walking Safari

With sunrise painting the sky, you're out exploring, watching the world wake up. Hippos charge into the water, battling for wading rights. Giraffes wander as if in a daze, too serene to be bothered by the quarreling buffalo nearby. Springbok skip with the energy of youth, energized by the morning sun. And the lions are on the move, a pride inspecting the breakfast menu. This is the prime time to see the predators out hunting. Sometimes you follow their movements, other times you arrive to find a bloodied carcass. And sometimes you arrive long after the kill, watching the frenzied battle between hyenas and vultures unfold. Like yesterday, you arrive back at the lodge in the late morning, for a few tranquil hours along the Sand River.

Shangaan trackers are constantly watching the landscape, picking up on clues as they maintain an encyclopedic knowledge on what is residing where. They know how to avoid the lions, where to find the zebra, and which sandy routes are safe to take. This afternoon, they lead you on an interpretive bush walk, teaching some of their knowledge while guiding you to intimate moments with the ungulate herds. Travel on foot and you're almost silent. You're also relatively small. So the antelopes are not scared away. They stop to greet you, providing beautiful moments of recognition as you stand just meters from a zebra or impala herd. On some walks, it's even possible to cross elephants and giraffe safely. An armed ranger provides another layer of security to keep you safe through the experience.

Kruger National Park – Crossing the Kruger

Kruger National Park can dwarf some U.S. states, its wild landscape stretching out across the northeast of South Africa. The scale is baffling. Today you spend the day crossing the park, traversing different ecosystems that are havens for diverse characters. Drive through the bushwillow woodlands, revered hangout of the elephant herds, where their tusks roam through the trees. Now along a strip of thorn thickets, where rhinos congregate in astonishing numbers. Kruger is home to over half the world's wild rhino population, and their horns are a constant part of the experience. Next, it's into the bushveld, iconic sweeps of rustic earth and sporadic green, a meeting point for a great variety of life. Picnic here, watching ungulates graze and admiring the hippos that splash in the muddy pools.

Your destination is the mountain bushveld of the Lebombo Mountains, a raw and rugged corner of Kruger. It's many miles from civilization, and that's the appeal. The big game experience is complemented by a sense of seclusion, of being alone in the wild African bush. Discreet and delightful, Camp Shonga completes the impressions. With just five luxurious tented suites, it enables you to be fully absorbed in the landscape. Close your eyes and listen. An elephant's trumpet, a hippo's wheeze-honk, a herd of zebra munching, monkeys yapping; there's always a resonant soundtrack to keep you company in Kruger.

Kruger National Park – An Intimate Bush Immersion

Wildebeest herds delight in the morning hours, full of energy as they stampede their path through the mountain foothills. Giraffes are the opposite; languid, tranquil, unaffected by the antics elsewhere. Bateleur eagles soar overhead, wild cats hide beneath shaded branches, and the Kruger drama plays out before your eyes. The focus at Shonga is on really understanding this environment and the guides unveil the rhythm of the bush. Game drives offer the intimate encounters of course, but they also showcase how everything is connected in the wild. Settle into the landscape's beat, rest in the heat of the day and explore when the cool air brings everyone to life. In such a remote place, the experience is never interrupted by another safari vehicle or group of tourists.

Nelspruit to Cape Town – Relaxing Beneath Table Mountain

The safari continues as you drive out of Kruger, final moments provided by groups of rhino and the trunk-swinging elephants. Nelspruit is the nearest town, and there's a direct domestic flight from here to Cape Town. Touch down and you won't see the big five. But you're equally inspired by nature's power. Table Mountain stands above the city, imperiously rising along the whitened shores of the Atlantic Ocean. You'll be transferred to the One & Only Cape Town, a five-star property along the water. The V & A Waterfront area is within walking distance, offering an excellent introduction to the city. Look one way and you have the mountain, look the other for a beautiful ocean sunset. And look around you at a selection of fine dining restaurants and boutique markets.

Cape Town – Exploring the Colors and History of the City

Cape Town is doused in color. Pastel-shaded houses stretch down mountain lanes, vibrant markets fill the central streets, and the locals' clothes are always bright. A local guide takes you through the city, and the tones are sometimes baffling to the eye, such vividness and enthusiasm in a city that always celebrates creativity. After two hours in the heart of Cape Town, you take the boat to Robben Island, where the desolation is a stark contrast. This is where Nelson Mandela and many ANC members were incarcerated for 18 years; an ex-inmate takes you on an inspiring tour that's filled with stories.

Return to the mainland for lunch in the city, on an al fresco terrace along Kloof Street. Completing the Cape Town tour is the ultimate aerial experience, a cable car taking you to Table Mountain's summit. Everything stretches out from here; a chain of peaks cascading towards Africa's southwestern point, deserted beaches rolling north, city suburbs glistening in the Cape Town sun. You'll return to the hotel in the late afternoon and the rest of the day is at your leisure.

Stellenbosch – Sensual Tranquility in the Cape Winelands

Today you follow the mountain chain, ascending over the mountains and descending onto the vine-enveloped slopes of the Cape Winelands. There's an immediate sense of escapism, the elegant landscapes enhanced by charming farmhouses and tranquil wine estates. Delaire Graff is one of the region's most exclusive wineries, and it's your base for the final two days. Your lodge has a private heated plunge pool, expansive sundeck, and unending views over the Winelands. Arrive for lunch, a sumptuous three-course affair that's followed by Delaire Graff's signature wine tasting. Expect an opulent sensuality that matches the accommodation. This estate doesn't produce quantity. It's focused on elite boutique wines.

Stellenbosch – More Tasting in the Picturesque Winelands

Hundreds of wine estates are dotted across the Stellenbosch area. There are the big farms, famous across the world for their complex red wines. In comparison, rustic estates have been in the same family hands for two centuries, and tasting is still conducted by the owners. Then there are the newcomers, reshaping the boundaries of the Winelands produce. A private guide takes you on a full-day wine tasting tour that visits four to six wine estates. It's tailored to your tastes; mention your favorite wine at Delaire Graff and the guide will know where to keep your senses most entertained. Pinotage is the unmissable focus of the day, the region's unique grape producing rich and elaborate wines. Lunch will be included, another celebration of South Africa's most respected culinary region.

Stellenbosch to Cape Town – Departure

It's a short transfer back to Cape Town and in less than an hour you're at the international airport for your return flight. For late departures, the lodge offers a wonderful space to relax before the overnight travel.

June in Cape Town is the heart of winter, when the climate becomes cooler and wetter compared to the dry and sunny summer months. During this period, the days become shorter and the nights longer and temperatures drop significantly, especially in the evenings and early mornings.

In general, the weather in Cape Town in June is characterized by frequent rain and cloudy days, which can affect plans for active vacations, such as walks on the beach, hiking in the mountains or leisurely exploring the city. However, if you're interested in indoor activities such as visiting museums, art galleries or exploring the local cuisine, June can still offer a fulfilling travel experience.

Transportation in the city can operate with minor disruptions due to wet weather, but Cape Town is well prepared for winter weather, so significant delays are rare.

June is considered low season in Cape Town due to the colder and rainy weather, resulting in fewer tourists, lower accommodation prices and more accessible attractions. This month has one of the highest rainfall levels of the year, which contributes to the lushness of the region's natural landscapes, but also unpredictable vacation plans.

Overall, June is not the best time to visit Cape Town if you're looking for warm weather and outdoor adventure. However, if you want to enjoy cultural events indoors in the city without the crowds and at a cheaper price, June can be an attractive option.

The weather in Cape Town in June is characterized by average temperatures of around 17°C (63°F) during the day, and around 8°C (46°F) at night. This significant drop in daytime and nighttime temperatures reflects typical winter conditions in Cape Town, as June falls during the Southern Hemisphere winter season. The cool daytime temperatures and cold nights provide a stark contrast to the warm and dry summer months.

At this time, the difference between day and night temperatures can be very noticeable, so you need to prepare for a wide variety of conditions - warm layers for the day that can be tailored for much cooler evenings and nights.

Compared to the peak summer months (December to February), when average temperatures reach 26°C (79°F) and minimum temperatures rarely dip below 15°C (59°F), temperatures in June are much lower. This makes June one of the coldest months in Cape Town, along with July and August, when the city's winter season kicks in.

June is considered the low season in Cape Town due to the cool and wet winter weather, resulting in fewer tourists compared to the busy summer months of December through February.

The reduced tourist flow results in attractions becoming less crowded, providing a more relaxing vacation for visitors. In addition, when demand decreases, prices for accommodation, tours and other services tend to drop, making June a cost-effective time to visit the city.

The benefits of visiting Cape Town in June include enjoying the city's cultural and culinary offerings indoors without the summer crowds and at potentially lower costs.

While outdoor activities may be limited by weather conditions, fewer tourists and lower prices provide a unique opportunity to experience Cape Town in a more intimate and budget-friendly setting, a stark contrast to the high season.
