First Look: TaylorMade PSi and PSi Tour irons

taylormade psi tour iron

Let’s start with the obvious; face slots are back. TaylorMade debuted face slots in last year’s RSi 1, RSi 2 and RSi TP irons . According to TaylorMade, the new irons are designed to combine increased ball speed and distance with better looks, sound and feel than their predecessors.

5900e9bb1b4bb8d6c4fc439110cad340

To achieve this with the PSi irons, the company integrated a “Distance Feel System” (DFS), which includes a hybrar blend compression damper. The rubber/hybrar dampener is wedged between the face and cavity of each iron, and works with a multi-material cavity badge to reduce unwanted vibrations at impact.

Compared to the RSi 2 irons, the PSI irons have a more progressive design. The long irons (3-5) are about the same size as the RSi 2 irons, and have a 10-gram tungsten weight in their toe to improve forgiveness and launch conditions. The short irons (8-PW) are considerably smaller than the RSi 2 short irons, and use a two-piece construction that merges a forged hosel/club face with a 431 stainless steel backing. The set also is available with a GW and SW, which are fully forged from 1025 carbon steel.

As the irons increase in number, the blade lengths, top line thicknesses and offset gradually increase.

2f652299dc9d518368c1fd341f3f4d21

The PSi irons also have TaylorMade’s new Speed Pocket, which is cut closer to the face of the irons than previous models. It now cuts through the sole and into the undercut of each iron, creating a larger high-speed area on the face that adds consistency to mishits.

The faces of the irons themselves are very thin, measuring less than 2 millimeters, and they have face slots on the perimeter of the grooves on the heel and toe to further preserve ball speeds on off-center strikes.

TaylorMade’s PSi irons (3-PW) will hit retail on Nov. 6 for $1,099 (steel)  and $1,199 (graphite) , Stock shaft options include KBS Tour C-Taper 105 (X, S and R-Flex) steel shafts or Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage (80/R, 90/S or 100/X) iron graphite shafts. Additional custom shafts will be available.

TaylorMade’s PSi Tour irons are fully forged from 1025 Carbon Steel and have a more compact head shape that better players prefer. Compared to the RSi TP irons, they are significantly more compact at address, more closely resembling TaylorMade’s Tour Preferred MB irons.

Unlike traditional forged blade irons, however, the PSi Forged irons use two types of milled, polymer-filled slots to give the clubs slightly more distance and forgiveness

  • Speed Pockets on their soles (3-7)
  • Face Slots  on the club faces (3-7)

The PSi Tour irons have thinner top lines, less offset and narrower soles than the PSi irons, adding to their workability and trajectory control.

TaylorMade’s PSi Tour irons (3-PW) will be available on Dec. 20 for $1,299 , and will come with True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 shafts, as well as other custom shaft options.

This might be the first time I’ve liked what TM has done. I won’t be trading in my current irons, believe me, but this is actually more practical than I’ve seen out of them.

Apparently they really like the Ping i-series…

Nothing against TM since I play the RBZ Stage 2 driver but, I plan on playing my Cleveland 588 MT’s another year. They are one of the best sets I’ve ever played. With the forged face they are smooth feeling and long when hit flush and still give good distance when hit off center. I can still hit my 7 iron 145-150 yds at 63 with them so, why spend $1200 when I can save that money to play more golf.

there are going to be a lot of people experiencing sticker shock this year in the great white north due to the CDN$ taking a dive which will most likely push people more so then they already do to pick up a set which is a year or two old rather then buy new.

They shouldn’t sell that good, why would you pay $1300 bucks for a set of irons, when they are even better forgings available for $300 less and Miura’s just a little more (I know the general public doesn’t know of them). I wonder if Callaway’s new irons will go up in price as well. Taylormade is going to have a tough year unless they cut prices.

Like all the other OEMs, the best part is that I never need to buy new again because they say this every year “According to “insert OEM”, the new “insert driver/wood/hybrid/irons/wedge/putter” are designed to combine increased ball speed and distance with better looks, sound and feel than their predecessors.” – so why would I ever buy outdated technology as next year will always be better. I’d rather buy used knowing it is outdated, but cheaper rather new which is going outdated before it is released as they always have years already in the pipeline, ready to go.

TaylorMade PSi Irons Review

More in irons:.

PING Blueprint T Irons

50 Words or Less

Compared to the RSi2, there isn’t much new in the TaylorMade PSi irons .  Solid look and performance for the aspiring or better player.

Introduction

“Demand More.”  That’s what TaylorMade’s ads for the new PSi irons  implore you to do.  Demand better looks, better feel, and better performance.  We set out to test whether or not you get any of those things compared to the last generation’s RSi2 irons.

TaylorMade PSi Irons_0097

I have a fairly discerning eye when it comes to golf equipment, but, if you took the badges off, I doubt I could tell the difference between the new  PSi irons  and the RSi2 irons that they’re replacing.  That’s not necessarily a knock – the RSi2 and PSi hit that middle ground between giant shovel and butter knife.  The offset, top line, and sole width are all exactly what you’d expect from a club meant for the 10-15 handicapper .  The one thing that may bother some players are the slots in the face, but if these clubs perform well for you, it’s something you can get past.

TaylorMade PSi Irons_0093

Sound & Feel

The impact sound and feel of the TaylorMade PSi irons  is hard to put a label on because it’s very “in between.”  It’s not hard, but it isn’t soft either .  It’s not loud, not mushy, nor is it crisp and sweet.  It’s just in the middle.  I can’t see anyone hitting this and being disgusted, but I don’t imagine people will fall in love with the feel either.

Feedback on mishits is moderate .  You can tell when you miss it if you’re paying attention, but the sound and feel of misses is similar enough to pure strikes that you can be deceived if you’re simply pounding shot after shot.

TaylorMade PSi Irons_0085

Performance

Typically a company has 2-3 bullet points on why their new product is the greatest thing since sliced bread.  For the PSi irons ,  TaylorMade has listed over 7.  True to my nature, I’ll boil it down to one: these irons are good, but no different than the RSi2 .

Compared to similar irons, the forgiveness on mishits is as good if not a bit better.  I continue to be impressed with the ability of the sole slot to make thin shots perform more like pure strikes both in terms of launch angle and ball speed.  Please do keep in mind, however, that when I talk about forgiveness, that only relates to distance.  No iron, regardless of how many slots it has, will straighten out hooks, slices, pushes, and pulls.

In terms of distance, these irons can compete with just about anything else in this category.  TaylorMade actually increased the loft on most of the irons by 0.5 degrees compared to the RSi2, but few, if any, 10 handicaps will notice that difference.

TaylorMade PSi Irons_0091

The bottom line with the TaylorMade PSi irons  is this: if you’re a 10-15 handicap player who needs new irons, these are definitely worth a look, but they’re not significantly different than the RSi2 .  If you need to have the newest thing, prepare to spend an extra $300 over the last generation.

It appears that you like the RSI 2 irons more then the PSI. Are the PSI and RSI 2 the same size?

' src=

I don’t prefer either; I think they’re the same iron and the RSi2 costs $300 less. Yes, as I explained under “Looks”, these irons are virtually identical.

' src=

Thanks for that Matt, a very honest opinion and one I will take on board.

' src=

Hi bought the psi and the MP4 mizuno (blade). I hit both clubs the same but with less distance with the blade. I am a 12 handicap and both irons feels good. I only practice them on a matt. My question is , if I do the same hit miss (slice or hook) on both clubs. Do they react the same?

Assuming contact on the CoG, every club will produce the same hook or slice given the same club face and club path.

' src=

I’m used to better reviews than this from you. I doubt you even tried them out. I would’ve been interesting, as they are always dishing out a different stock shaft with each release. It’s not an exact KBS c taper light as far as I can ascertain because the weight is different. Why do Taylormade not let you know the Specs of their OEM shafts?

Is there something specific that leads you to the bold assertion that we didn’t even test these clubs? Or does our review simply not match your preferences and therefore must be wrong? As for TM’s stock shafts and specs, that’s a question you’d have to direct to the company directly. I don’t know.

If you did in fact hit them then I’m sorry. I just found the article lacking in info compared to your usual high standard. For many of us, we read these articles down the line a couple of years and we’re buying them of the shelf with their OEM shafts. That becomes almost the selling point. They changed the shaft from the RSI 2 to the PSI irons. If they’re almost the same irons then that’s the thing I want to read about. NO review I’ve read has really detailed that. I just read and viewed your piece on the Alpha driver and that was great! The photos on your reviews are always the best too….

It would be ideal if we always had access to previous models and comparable current models, but unfortunately that’s not always the case.

I’m glad you enjoyed the Alpha driver review.

Club Test: TaylorMade PSi vs RSi 2

Is Newer Better?

TaylorMade’s PSi iron is an indirect replacement for RSi 2. What does that mean exactly? While it takes the RSi 2’s place in the TaylorMade lineup, it’s not exactly an equivalent offering – it doesn’t overlap perfectly.

In an age where lofts are becoming strong with each release, TaylorMade took the somewhat unusual approach of weakening lofts by .5 degrees on average throughout the set, though shaft lengths unchanged. As you might glean from the slight alternation in specs, the PSi isn’t designed to fit exactly the same golfer as the RSi 2. Instead, the PSi is designed with a slightly better player in mind .

RSI2vPSI-6

That created a bit of a gap in the lineup, which TaylorMade filled by making M2/M2 Tour a bit less game-improvement than last season’s AeroBurner. Basically, over the last several months, TaylorMade has basically bumped its entire iron lineup towards the better player – though M2 remains an excellent option for higher handicap golfers.

And all that’s without digging too much into PSi Tour, which was actually designed with, really, tour guys in mind. We’re talking about a legitimate Tour iron, developed for TaylorMade’s top players as an alternative to unforgiving blades.

PSi Technology

RSI2vPSI-2

Much of PSi’s technology (most notably Speed Slots) carries over from RSi 2. A redesigned Cut-Thru Speed Pocket is intended to bring a bit more distance (particularly on low face shots). The face itself has been thinned a bit to boost the COR.

In an attempt to improve feel, TaylorMade created a new HYBRAR-based dampening system. The material offers rubbber-like elasticity, but has fantastic shock absorption properties. I had the chance to play around with the material at a TaylorMade event last fall. It’s a fascinating material. It looks and feels like rubber, but is almost entirely non-responsive when dropped. Basically, it doesn’t bounce. It absorbs impact almost entirely.

RSI2vPSI-5

With an iron like PSi, we believe we need to consider two things.

  • Is the product measurably better than what came before it.
  • Did the company achieve the design goals specific to the product.

That first one is admittedly tricky given that TaylorMade moved its own goal posts a bit, but to find out if PSi compares favorably to RSi 2, we put the irons to the test.

Test Conditions

  • 3 Testers  HCP Range from 2-11, hit 10 shots with 4 irons, 7 irons, and Pitching Wedges
  • The order clubs were hit was randomized on a per tester basis
  • All shots hit using Bridgestone B330-RX balls
  • All shots measured using ForeSight GC2 Launch Monitors
  • Country Club Elite Mats from Real Feel Golf Mats were used as the hitting surface.
  • RSi 2 – KBS 105
  • PSi – KBS C-Taper 105

Test Results

Observations:

Given the design emphasis around COR, and presumably ball speed, we were a bit surprised to see PSi produce consistently slower ball speeds. That’s at least in part attributable to the weaker lofts, and becomes much less of a concern when you consider that PSi consistently launched higher with more spin. It’s a combination that’s undesirable in a driver, but unless it’s excessive, many will find it desirable in an iron.

Focusing on distance for a moment, we see less than 2 yards of distance between the two irons, with the PSi producing an apex nearly 2 yards higher. We also like the significantly tighter shot area (dispersion) favoring the PSi, which, as you’ll see, is the defining difference between the two irons.

Again we find plenty of similarities and some subtle, yet not unimportant, differences.

As was the case with the longer irons, PSi proved to be the slower of the two irons, but launch angles, spin rates, and apex (peak height) were again higher. PSi carry distance lagged by roughly 2.5 yards.

While we’d be remiss to point out that our testers missed the target line by a bit more with the PSi this time, we also feel compelled to point out that once again – and we’d argue most importantly – the shot area (our preferred measurement of consistency) was tighter with the PSi.

We like that quite a bit.

Moving to the wedge, differences are perhaps a bit more surprising. The slots are out of the equation, which means distance comes primarily from loft and not technology. Nevertheless we did see some notable points of distinction.

Yet again, RSi 2 was the faster iron producing a bit more distance, while the PSi continued to launch higher, spin more, and climb higher. Most significantly, the average shot area for the PSi was half the size it was for the RSi 2… and we think RSi 2 is a really good iron .

Once again, we’ll trade a couple of yards for the added consistency .

RSI2vPSI-11

Look & Feel Notes

As you’re probably aware, we don’t dig too much into sound and feel because it’s entirely subjective, but this time around I did want to share some observations and tester feedback.

  • It may not be immediately apparent, but with enough focus, it’s clear that the topline on the PSi is noticeably smaller.
  • Offset is less pronounced as well.
  • Personal opinion for sure, but the badging on the PSi is cleaner and yet more modern.
  • As far as feel is concerned, one tester preferred the PSi, another strongly preferred the RSi 2 , while the 3rd was completely indifferent.

The crucial points are probably the first two. The PSi is slightly more compact, slightly more refined, and because of that, will likely be more appealing to golfers who generally don’t like the appearance of what you might call tech irons.

RSI2vPSI-7

The Verdict

In a perfect world, the PSi would offer almost immeasurable improvement over the RSI 2. This, however, is reality, and that’s generally not how year-over-year iterations of golf clubs work.

We do believe that TaylorMade succeeded at its goal of creating a slightly more player-centric iron without compromising on the technology. That said, only you can decide if the performance improvement justifies the increased cost. A set of PSi of irons will run you $1100 (based on 4-AW, steel), while persistent shoppers can likely find a set of closeout RSi 2 irons for less than $500 .

Cost is always a consideration, but we can’t argue even a little with the  tighter dispersion and improved consistency . While the PSi isn’t groundbreaking, it’s a step-forward… an unquestionable improvement over what came before it.

What more can we as golfers ask for?

Nice test with interesting results. TMag wanted a more player like iron and got it. Bully for them. Someone in that category would then try the Taylor Made offering verses similar offerings from other OEMs before making their choice.

What we aren’t seeing here is a huge factor as well in irons, forgiveness. I’ve been as low as a 2, actually as low as a 1 and forgiveness in irons has always been a factor for me. Granted that iron play and distance have long been the weakest parts of my game. Perhaps all shots were considered in the test and so the dispersion patterns did reveal the more forgiving iron as well.

Thanks for the numbers here. How about something with drivers next. I would enjoy seeing five straight years of Callaway ad TMAG comporable category drivers go head to head. That would be most interesting

This very question had been burning in my head – thanks for the insight!

PING irons are better than anything TM makes. Better quality control, and 2nd to NONE customer service. So I’ll go with that all day long!

That quality control and customer service is worth about 10 yards and poor dispersion with little to no backspin. I’ll buy my clubs from Quasimodo if they work.

And Titleist makes better irons than Ping. We could do this all day. This article was about Taylormade PSi vs RSi2 – stay on topic.

Ricky Jones

Bryan, I know you said you were looking to upgrade your TaylorMade irons. I have the RSi 1 irons and love them. Thought you might want to check this out, but since you’re chipping in for eagles with your current ones you might want to hold off. Lol

Michael Slaughter

Use to have the rocket ladez tour. And just switched to cobra forged tech. Gained about 16 yards of carry and still a tight dispersion area. Best decision I made in a while

Chris Embardino

The short answer here is no. Newer isnt always better.

Matt Cipolla

Find a set irons you like and you can keep them for a few years. Update your wedges, driver & fairway woods every other year.

Matt McCollum

Wedges yes but driver and fairway every other year is bad advice imo. Drivers have not changed much in years they are all maxed out, unless you want a new fancy look stay with what works.

Amen. I don’t understand running to a new driver so often if you have one that was really fit to you (shaft fitting also) as you hit it well.

Supposed to say…”if you hit it well.”

Boone Pruitt

I’ve used the same irons for almost 15 years. The Adams 1A Pro. I hit them the same distance as the newer irons with much better accuracy. Not saying you shouldn’t upgrade when needed. Only saying that sometimes you don’t NEED an upgrade.

Adam Shields

I have the rsi2 irons and they are great irons. Great feel. Not to strong in lofts and just a really nice club

Just buy the Rocketbladez tour (the iron that started this whole family of player’s cb irons with goo in the long irons) for like $2.

they feel like shit

Frank Casanova

I have played them both .. The PSI TOUR is definitely a better feeling and sounds so much better then the RSI TP

Wish I could afford them!!! Would love to try them.

Brandon Nutss

Would be interested to see a test of the two heads on the same shaft to remove that variable.

i wanted to buy the PSi because I think it looks really nice. but then I took a look at the 2 bags of full sets I already own. I wish golf brand would start a lease program. it works for cars, now it’s working for phones. let me trade in my irons every year for the new ones.

yes you can sell, yes you can trade in for credit. why not make it a program from the onset of buying the club. like Apple’s always new iphone program. perhaps lots of lazy people like me who want an easy way to keep up with the golfing Joneses. Standardize the privilege of always having the newest clubs and I’ll pay the premium.

i love this idea

Miguel Dabu

I’ve tried the PSI irons at a local Golf Town and they felt really good. I’ve played game improvement irons all my life and being able to test these gave me confidence to move forward to small irons. I really liked how they felt and how they looked at the address position. But they are too expensive at the moment so I got the Tour Preferred CB’s instead and never regret the decision. I cannot imagine playing game improvement irons again.

Kramer Graef

Still not as solid as the old r7 tp’s

That’s why the moved away from them.

TaylorMade PSi Irons Review

Martin Hopley

Having had Speed Pocket slots in the soles of irons for a while, last year TaylorMade introduced them on the faces of the RSi irons .

TaylorMade PSi Irons

There were three models in that range and going forward, the larger headed RSi 1 set continues, which is good to see as that was the best of the bunch.

However, replacing the RSi 2 and RSi TP models is the TaylorMade PSi iron, which is promoted as a 'Players Performance' iron, hence the P for 'Players Slotted iron' in the PSi name.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

The PSi still features the straight face slots as before, but it is in the head construction that TaylorMade has made big changes.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

The Speed Pocket now features a cut through slot that connects with the undercut cavity to enable it to flex more and maintain ball speed across the face.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

Married to this is what TaylorMade call a Dynamic Feel System (DFS) to cushion vibration at impact using dampening compounds and a multi-material badge.

The shape of the cut-through cavity and the amount of dampening changes as you go through the set depending on the loft of the club.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

This it all does very well in a mid-sized head that looks good and feels good with a nice solid sound.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

The top line at address is also midsized and I think any single figure golfer would be pleased with the look of these.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

Especially as the relative head size is maintained through the set and does not get progressively smaller.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

If they are too big for your eye, then there is also a fully forged PSi Tour iron coming with a slightly smaller head, narrower sole and a thinner top line.

Back to the standard PSi and the technology does not stop there as TaylorMade claim to have optimised each iron individually with whatever materials they can lay their hands on.

As part of this they have also fine tuned the lofts, resulting in all of the clubs except the 3-iron & SW having a loft ending in 0.5°.

TaylorMade did this optimisation thing in the RSi 2 set and I had my reservations about the flow of the set as a result, so I was interested to see how the PSi would feel as I went down through the set.

The 3 to 5 irons are reasonably sized for better players and feature a tungsten toe weight to improve the stability and this it does reasonably well. The sound and feel was not quite as hollow as before, but inevitably the larger cavity back in the 3 and 4-irons did have hollow undertones.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

The sole slots and face slots continue to work together on the 6 and 7-iron and these irons were probably my favourites of the set as they were a good size, but the forgiveness made them excellent cast better player irons.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

The sole widths were generous without being chunky and a small grind across the rear of the sole made it play narrower than it looks.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

In the 8-iron the sole slot disappears and the head changes to a forged steel construction with face slots. This also feels a little better and it made me wonder why the whole set was not forged heads with slots.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

On speaking to TaylorMade's Chief Technical Officer Benoit Vincent, I discovered it goes back to the 'optimum design for each iron' strategy. He said that longer irons need more ball speed so casting is better for that. Shorter irons need more feel so forging is better, but the trade off is a softer face and relatively less ball speed at impact.

To be fair TaylorMade has managed the performance gap well at this crossover point so that the distance gap between the 8 and 7-iron is the same as between the 7 and 6.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

Finally in the 9-iron and wedges, the face slots go too and you are left with a fully forged head with a small cavity back that feels pretty good. With the dampening it sounds better than the previous forged wedges in the RSi 2, but it is not quite in the same league as a peripheral weighted forged blade.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

Given all the changes in head style and manufacture, I was carefully looking at the flow of the set and I feel it is better than RSi 2. I accept that this is purely subjective, but the lack of a consistent head construction and material theme bothers me theoretically, especially switching from cast to forged heads during a set.

That said, the blend of cast and forged heads does work well and apart from the feel, it was hard to notice any difference in performance between the two styles.

TaylorMade PSi Irons

The extra thought and materials that have gone into the PSi iron is reflected in the premium price and as ever, the proof is in the hitting. In terms of their own range, the PSi is probably the best forgiving better player iron that TaylorMade has done and it should be a strong challenger in this category.

TaylorMade PSi Irons - Product Details

Retail partners, user reviews.

I love these irons but have also had a problem with the name plates on the back of the clubs. I was pulling my 7 iron out of the bag one day and cut my finger..... now almost all of the clubs have exposed edges from where the name plates have come away from the head, leaving sharp edges. I took them into American Golf who contacted TaylorMade. I was subsequently fitted for a new set of P790's free of charge and swapped them for my PSI's. I was given the choice of M3, M4 or P790's but having read the reviews on the M3 and M4's i chose the P790's. Taylormade know that it is a problem with the clubs and if they are still in the warranty period they should exchange them for a newer model as they are not producing the PSi's anymore.

The PSi tours are my favourite TaylorMade iron since the 05 TP CB. They are easy to launch, feel pretty good, similar to the AP2, and give impressive distance for a players iron. The short irons are awesome. I also had a set of the regular PSi and they were ok, but these are great. Super thin and compact.

Ditto to what Tom said above about the name plates on the back of these irons separating from the iron and leaving sharp exposed edges. Horrible design flaw. I got cut by one. Attempted to press the sharp corners on the worst ones back in, but then my 14 year old grandson got poked by one when he was using them. I have finally just started removing them completely as they start to fail. I am going to send pictures to Taylormade to see if they will do anything.

The PSi irons perform well, but they have what I consider a design flaw. The "Taylormade" name plate on the back of the irons tends to separate from the back of the iron resulting in a very sharp and dangerous exposed edge. There is a bandage on my right index finger as I type this covering the gash I got putting my 5 iron back in the bag.

I am 65 years plying 12 handicap and I have been playing with Taylor made R Blades steel shaft. Have just purchased a set of Psi graphite. Brilliant buy.

Being a blade player all my life playing off 5 handicap when younger but now into my seventies and now playing off 15 I was a bit worried when buying the PSi Tour irons but i have found them fantastic as well as being forgiving they have given me better ball flight and greater length than with my older blades. 100% great buy for me even though some of my friends were telling me I would not be able to handle them I am so glad to be proving them wrong.

Love these irons. Went from Callaway X to these. Thought I'd struggle with them but if anything has definitely improved my game

This set is good! Forgiving club for me was what I was looking for and they recommend this! They are an amazing set!

Much more forgiving than advertised. I used to play Taylor MC and then went to Callaway XR PRO. Tested the PSI in the store and wasn't totally convinced. I borrowed a set, after two rounds I'm sold! Easier than the MC with nice feel and awesome sound! This has to be the best balanced set, the A wedge is great, the long irons are easy and so long. Nice high trajectory coupled with the strong lofts give some remarkably long irons. Look=4.5, Trajectory=5. Feel=4. Sound=5. Accuracy=5.

TaylorMade P760 v PSi irons test

Published: 12 February 2019

taylormade psi tour iron

More distance. More accuracy. They’re the two factors most of us will focus on when we’re fitted for new clubs. And if we’re honest, the former will be most important (especially with a driver).

But when you get to a certain level – when you’re already a competent ball striker with a repeatable swing – you want something else from a fitting; consistency.

taylormade psi tour iron

Scratch player and TG reader Tom Burgh, who plays for Northants, knew exactly what he wanted when he arrived at The Grove to be fitted for TaylorMade’s new P760 irons . “I’m looking for a slightly higher launch – my current irons launch quite low – and similar numbers from every shot,” he says. “Any extra distance is just a bonus.”

Watch: TaylorMade P760 vs PSi Tour irons

Tom has never been fitted for irons before. He bought his current set off the rack, albeit with aftermarket shafts. They’re TaylorMade PSi Tours, a players’ forged iron launched in 2016 with some decent tech; Face Slots and Speed Pockets in the 3-7 irons. “I really like them,” adds Tom. They look great at address, feel great and go really well. I know the P760s are a natural replacement for them, but with even more tech.”

TESTED: Hollow body irons

TaylorMade fitter Daniel Morris is on hand with a TrackMan to make sure our scratch player gets fitted into something that can take him into plus-handicap figures.

TaylorMade P760 iron

TaylorMade is unashamedly catering to every whim of the discerning golfer with the P760. Head size, offset and lofts have all been engineered to meet the demands of a decent player’s shotmaking potential.

TESTED: Forged irons ranked by forgiveness

The 8-PW and AW are forged from a single piece of soft 1025CS steel (without hollow heads), while the 3-7 irons have forged heads (with the same 1025CS steel), but hollow bodies and a thin, flexible SUS630 face. Speed Foam is injected into the hollow 3-7 irons to dampen vibrations and create the optimal sound and feel which better players expect.

Daniel says:

taylormade psi tour iron

“It’s always nice to be able to get a better performance for a good player like this. It could be a higher launch, more shot shaping… it’s not all about distance.

Tom really wanted to see more launch – his PSi irons were coming out a little low. Some of that is technique, but we still saw an increase in launch. Ball speed did jump quite considerably – 4-5mph – which was a bit of a surprise and an added bonus, thanks to the Speed Foam in the mid and longer irons. They also helped that launch.

FULL REVIEW: TaylorMade P760 iron

Shaft-wise, we tried two and settled on the Project X LZ (6.5 flex); one of four aftermarket options with the P760s at no extra charge. We also used some good balls for the fitting; that’s not necessarily the case for many fitters. To achieve that higher launch, and manage spin, I recommended a TP5x versus the current ball he’s using.

We’re talking margins when fitting a Category 1 player like Tom. They’re generally in clubs that already perform for them – it’s not like a 25-handicapper fitted into a game improver iron, and watching their face light up at the improvements. We’re looking for marginal gains with a scratch golfer – a little bit of extra ball speed, extra launch, more control… and the P760s delivered all those for Tom.”

Tom’s numbers:

taylormade psi tour iron

“I always liked my PSi irons; I thought they were pretty much the best out there for my game. But when I saw the P760s I quickly realised how much better the head was!

I’ve never been fitted before and I was sceptical of the fitting process; I didn’t think it could give me much more. But I’ll happily admit I was wrong. I always thought I needed to flight the ball a little higher – the extra height would give me more control when the ball hits the green – and that’s exactly what Dan told me, and what the P760s delivered.

We only tried two shafts, and we saw the numbers get dramatically better. I think these irons will improve my consistency; I’m expecting to hit shots closer to the flag. With my PSis, I often found myself past the flag, putting from the back of the green, because the flight was really too low. With these new irons, I’ll be hitting less club because the ball speed has increased, and they’re launching higher and stopping faster on the green.”

The verdict:

Any golfer can benefit from a club fitting, even an accomplished scratch player like Tom. Modern sport is dominated by “incremental gains”; and when you get to this level, everything helps.

  4. TaylorMade PSi Tour Irons Review

The TaylorMade PSi Tour irons deliver excellent looks and feel with more forgiveness than you would expect from a real player's iron. Introduction. While I wasn't particularly impressed with TaylorMade's PSi iron - it's hard to see any upgrade compared to the RSi2 - I think the PSi Tour irons really hits the mark. This is an iron ...

  5. Review: TaylorMade PSi irons

While the PSi 7 iron is 2.5 degrees stronger than the PSi Tour irons, it's 0.5 degrees weaker than the same RSi 2 club. TaylorMade uses 10-gram tungsten toe weights in the PSi 3, 4 and 5 irons to lower CG and improve MOI, leading to higher-launching, straighter-flying shots.

  6. PSi Irons

Combined with re-designed head. geometries, tungsten weighting in the long irons, and forged short irons, PSi offers a truly dynamic take on. delivering superior sound and feel throughout the set. THE LOOK PREFERRED BY BETTER PLAYERS. In PSi irons, we combined beauty with purpose. Classic lines and carefully-considered shaping give PSi irons.

  8. TaylorMade PSi Irons Review

For the PSi irons, TaylorMade has listed over 7. True to my nature, I'll boil it down to one: these irons are good, but no different than the RSi2. Compared to similar irons, the forgiveness on mishits is as good if not a bit better. I continue to be impressed with the ability of the sole slot to make thin shots perform more like pure strikes ...

  9. Club Test: TaylorMade PSi vs RSi 2

As you might glean from the slight alternation in specs, the PSi isn't designed to fit exactly the same golfer as the RSi 2. Instead, the PSi is designed with a slightly better player in mind. That created a bit of a gap in the lineup, which TaylorMade filled by making M2/M2 Tour a bit less game-improvement than last season's AeroBurner.

  13. TaylorMade PSi Irons Review

Additionally, PSi Tour has a thinner topline, less offset and narrower sole than the PSi and its progressive CG position allows for higher trajectory in the long irons while retaining optimum workability.
