Robb Report Travel Masters 2023

Welcome to the second annual list of Robb Report ’s Travel Masters.

Travel can be both profound and transformative. Exhilarating and unforgettable. But not always. The difference between a good trip and a great one—perhaps a life-changing one—is so often about tapping the right people to help plan it. It can be hard to know who to trust to create your dream adventure or even a jaunt back to your favorite destination. There are hundreds of travel specialists, after all, most of whom will argue convincingly that they have contacts and connections to open doors around the globe.

Only a handful of operators worldwide, however, have the expertise, clout and ambition to make the unimaginable real. To celebrate them, and to help you, we have brought them together under this Masters of Luxury banner. There are fewer than two dozen, nearly all of them specialists in certain regions or types of journeys. They come with our endorsement.

We’ve worked closely with the first group on stories over the past year, including asking them to nominate  the hotels  and  suites  they consider the greatest places to stay in the world. We’ll continue to partner with them in  this way as well as on some exciting new initiatives we’ll soon be able to share (bookmark this page).

As always, if you’re traveling this year, don’t leave home without contacting one of them – and make sure to mention  Robb Report  sent you.

1. Christopher Wilmot-Sitwell, Cazenove & Loyd

adventure travel specialist

The 25-strong, UK-based agency , steered by the three-decade veteran Wilmot-Sitwell, is known for deftly combining adventure travel—think long-haul jaunts to hard-to-reach Asian and African sites—with no-beat-missed luxury. It was an early champion of sustainability: The firm is committed to offsetting the carbon impact of its own research trips via CommuniTree, a Nicaraguan reforestation project (clients can sign up, too).

2. Henry Cookson, Cookson Adventures

adventure travel specialist

Henry Cookson worked as a horse-riding safari guide in Africa before establishing his London-based firm . He’s carved out a niche that focuses on a small number of elaborate adventures; a few dozen custom itineraries are developed on demand each year. If you want a private trip to Antarctica, there may be no team better to organize it: Henry holds the world record for kite-skiing to the Pole of Inaccessibility, and Cookson Adventures was the first private company to take a submersible to Antarctica. The firm’s also offering Octopus , the renowned 413-foot explorer yacht owned by the late Paul Allen, for charter in the polar reaches.

3. Cari Gray, Gray & Co.

adventure travel specialist

If you’re outdoorsy, ready for anything and prepared to sweat, call Cari Gray. Few manage to design and book high-end active trips with more finesse than the Canadian, who lives in Santa Monica, Calif. Gray combines thrilling, adrenaline-powered programming with much-needed indulgence, whether that’s organizing biking in the mountains of Mallorca or chartering a fishing expedition in the waters off Chile.

4. John Clifford, International Travel Management

adventure travel specialist

John Clifford has almost four decades of experience as a trip designer for high-net-worth folk. Over that time, he’s developed a particular reputation for catering to LGBTQ+ travelers. From his base in San Diego, Calif. , Clifford works worldwide and he can as comfortably score you a last-minute Christmas vacay to Uxua in Trancoso as get you to Iceland’s Hotel Husafell in peak season. “My clients always get the best suite pre-blocked,” he says, “I often handpick it myself.”

5. Gary Portuesi & Jennifer Schwartz, Authentic Explorations

adventure travel specialist

Hungry for Italy? Authentic Explorations  is a go-to for any gourmet keen to indulge in truffles, bresaola and Barolo, among other Italian delicacies. Portuesi co-owns an Italian cooking school in NYC and thus certainly knows his stuff. A buyout of Massimo Bottura’s impossible-to-secure Osteria Francescana is easy enough for this team, but they’ll also happily supply a curated list of restaurants to your tastes. Of course, they’ll take care of booking them, too. AE has a headquarters stateside, as well as satellite offices in Florence and Sicily, giving it a head start on the ground in Italy. The company, formerly known as Authentic Italy, has recently broadened to other European vacation spots in recent years, including Croatia, Spain and Portugal.

6. Catherine Heald, Remote Lands

adventure travel specialist

If you’re heading to multiple countries in Asia—from Japan to the Maldives and everything in between—there’s no better counsel than that of Catherine Heald. “I have devoted my life to Asia since moving to Hong Kong in 1987,” she says. Heald and her team have expertise in major cities, but the farthest flung spots are a specialty. Think: Japan’s Yakushima or India’s Sikkim. Heald’s trips often support good causes: Clients who travel to Siem Reap, for example, may dig a water well for a local family as part of their journey. Of course, travelers can expect a good dose of luxury, too.

7. Tanya Dalton, Greaves India

adventure travel specialist

Dalton’s firm , with offices in London, Chicago and Delhi, has a firm handle on all things India. The family business, founded by her Mumbai-born grandfather and later run by her mother, has been around for more than four decades. As a result, Dalton has the ability to grant access to closely guarded sites in Southeast Asia’s largest country. Private palace? You got it. She can also wrangle suites in Rajasthani or program tiger-centric safaris. The choice is yours.

8. Cedric Reversade, Unique Properties & Events

adventure travel specialist

Some call him the villa whisperer, and for good reason. Cedric Reversade, who splits his time between London and Paris, has an unparalleled list of the world’s most exclusive private homes in every must-visit destination, from Saint-Tropez to Capri. Many of the lavish pads are only available (discreetly) via his firm. He and business partner Paul Maxime Koskas don’t simply rent out properties, either. The duo’s point of difference has long been the concierge service that comes bundled with the rental ; it’s like having an ultra-connected EA in any place you vacation.

9. Sandy Cunningham, Uncharted

adventure travel specialist

Sandy Cunningham’s firm Uncharted is aptly named, as it specializes in adventures and safaris in remote destinations. She began her career as a safari operator in East Africa, so she knows the game. Cunningham is adept at creating long-haul trips for large groups, too: She once booked a celebrity family into a private island in Seychelles without publicity, for instance. She has also proved she can safeguard a traveler’s privacy: She whisked the same family out a day earlier than planned, under cover of darkness, to avoid alerting any paparazzi.

10. Max Rosenthal & Stacy Fischer-Rosenthal, Fischer Travel

adventure travel specialist

Max Rosenthal (center) is the third generation of his family to join Fischer Travel . The New York-based firm was founded by his grandfather Bill Fischer, but is currently run by his mom Stacy. The 30-strong operation is more like a members-only club than a conventional travel agency, with a $150,000 initiation fee and annual dues of $25,000. For that, the team opens up its little black book to create one-off experiences worldwide. Indeed, it was Fischer Travel clients who were the first to experience Camp Sarika at Amangiri a month before it opened to anyone else. Another client wanted to see Wadi Rum in Jordan, but the local hotel didn’t pass Fischer’s quality control, so the team shipped in 10 staff from the Kempinski in Aqaba to temporarily run the camp at a higher level.

11. Jean Sanz Bernay, JSB Journeys

adventure travel specialist

US native Jean Sanz Bernay of the six-person boutique operation JSB Journeys has an affinity for all things Latin America. “I’ve traveled through, and lived in, every nook and cranny of South and Central America.” She has connections across the continent and continues to cater to all manner of requests. One client, for example, needed a last-minute, after-midnight jewelry store appointment in Lima to pick out his wife’s present, and another requested a strict kosher trip to Argentina with dinner at a local rabbi’s home.

12. Jules Maury, Scott Dunn Private

adventure travel specialist

The elegant, charming Jules Maury grew up globetrotting. She was the daughter of a Dow Chemical exec whose career took him (and his family) all over the world. Maury became a travel specialist by happenstance while living overseas; friends persistently asked her advice due to her insiderish knowledge and fine taste. Now she’s made it her career. Based in London, she runs the  ultra-elite offshoot  of Scott Dunn. Maury’s team focuses on custom itineraries worldwide, with an emphasis on forging access to the impossible.

13. Deborah Calmeyer, Roar Africa

adventure travel specialist

Zimbabwe-born Deborah Calmeyer is the go-to Africa expert for any ultra-high-net-worth traveler. She has on the ground offices in both Nairobi and Cape Town, plus headquarters in NYC. Roar Africa offers traditional safaris, but Calmeyer has also established a standalone division that ups the ante on the already-luxe trips. Roar Privé ‘s focus is villa exclusive rentals in the bush. It also offers private-jet-based safaris , which have proven so popular that they regularly sell out months in advance.

14. Kevin Jackson, EXP Journeys

adventure travel specialist

When money is truly no object, EXP Journeys comes in. Jackson and his team create bespoke, one-time-only events in extraordinary locations, often with six-figure budgets or higher. Take the dinosaur dig in the southwest, for instance, in which guests helped discover a new species with a well-known paleontologist. Another standout was a dinner arranged in partnership with Navajo Nation that saw travelers break bread with the last living Navajo Code Talker from World War II.

15. Jonathan Alder, Jonathan’s Travels

adventure travel specialist

Florida-based Jonathan Alder is another Africa insider: He once dropped everything to fly to East Africa to scout private aircraft for clients to use on a month-long trip across the continent. He recommends camps like Angama in the Masai Mara: Come for the walking safari, stay for the glass of champagne overlooking the valley. “It’s the exact spot where the movie poster for Out of Africa was taken,” he says. As a bonus, Alder is also an expert in Japan.

16. Stuart Rigg, Southern Crossings

adventure travel specialist

For more than 30 years, Sydney-based Stuart Rigg has helped travelers explore Australia and New Zealand. Logistics and connections of all kinds are tricky Downunder, so his assistance is particularly welcome. There’s virtually no request he can’t find a way to fulfill. In fact, one celebrity tasked Rigg with organizing his 50th birthday at a mansion in Sydney. The manse’s gym had to be fully refitted and the A/C recalibrated to ensure the traveler’s ideal temp. The birthday bash itself was on a private island right in the heart of Sydney Harbour.

17. Julian Harrison, Premier Tours

adventure travel specialist

Julian Harrison was born and raised in South Africa, before working as a guide there. This primed him to run a travel firm focused squarely on the continent. Beyond luxe safaris, Premier Tours offers trips to often-overlooked islands, like the Bazaruto Archipelago. Harrison is also known for working wonders when problems strike; whether that’s commandeering an aircraft to whisk clients from an unexpected flood in Kenya or handling immigration issues when a pet-chewed passport prevented a traveler from entering Johannesburg. (Harrison arranged a special appointment at the US embassy to replace the passport in situ.)

18. Alex Wix, Wix Squared

adventure travel specialist

Longtime luxury travel specialist Alex Wix only launched her firm seven years ago, but she has become a go-to for trips to Morocco (where she’s based), Australia and Asia. Her expertise is in the hard-to-reach spots in those three territories, though it’s in Morocco where her connections are truly unmatched. For example, she can arrange a candlelit canyon dinner near a luxury camp in the picturesque Agafay desert. Wix loves a personal touch, too: She once organized silver and gold Temari  (Japanese ornaments) for one couple traveling to Japan.

19. Ashley Isaacs Ganz, Artisans of Leisure

adventure travel specialist

Artisans of Leisure is known for its ultra-luxe private tours of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The NYC-based firm has previously arranged a visit to a nuclear research lab in France (CERN) and a rendezvous with a well-known Bernese Mountain Dog for some Silicon Valley-based millennials. It has also coordinated a wealthy family’s private-jet adventure to Greece, France and the UK. If you’ve always wanted to score the best room at the Ritz Paris or Claridge’s in London, Ashley Ganz can guarantee it.

20. Sunil Metcalfe, Black Tomato

adventure travel specialist

London-born, Metcalfe shuttles between the UK and the US, servicing ultra high net worth clients on both sides of the Atlantic for Black Tomato . The firm, founded in 2005, was intended to disrupt the stuffily old-fashioned approach that dominated luxe travel, intending to broaden its appeal to a younger moneyed clientele. It remains one of the buzziest operators thanks to the cachet and connections of Metcalfe; he’s arranged everything from a pop-up spa in the heart of the Yucatan at Chichen Itza for a group of friends keen for RR&R (ruins, rest and relaxation) to an impromptu flyby from the Norwegian Air Force Fleet while fishing-mad clients cooked their catch in Norway ‘s Lofoten Islands.

21. Jaclyn Sienna India, Sienna Charles

adventure travel specialist

Jaclyn Sienna India’s clients pay an annual retainer to keep her on speed dial, as she doubles as a lifestyle concierge and travel agent. If a villa on the Côte d’Azur in summer or a yacht in Sardinia’s seas is your focus, consider adding the Beverly Hills-based firm to your contacts. Sienna focuses on villas more than hotels, explaining: “It’s hard to get someone who has three homes worth $30 million or more each excited about a new hotel—hotels don’t offer the level of service they once did.” Another key differentiator when it comes to Sienna’s programming is the fact that all the guides she recommends have been sourced first-hand. That way, she can vouch for their quality without concern.

22. Ileana Von Hirsch, Five Star Greece

adventure travel specialist

Need a villa worthy of Onassis in his pomp? Want to access the Acropolis in ways that even VIPs can’t wrangle? Last minute charter to Corfu a summertime emergency? Just ask von Hirsch, whose expertise and connections in Greece are unparalleled. She stumbled into the business when she and her sisters inherited what she calls “an extravagantly beautiful but impractical beach house” on a beach there, and had to find a way to commercialize it if they were to keep it (It didn’t hurt that Madonna was one of their first renters) von Hirsch quickly became the go-to broker for friends’ high-end villas, before expanding into all things Greece on both land and sea.

Ranking Methodology

Criteria & scoring.

To rank the adventure travel companies on our list we used 5 main criteria, as follows:

We researched the web traffic statistics as measured by SimilarWeb.com and social media audiences as measured by followers on Facebook and Instagram, and subscribers on Youtube. We created a popularity score for 1. Web Traffic and 2. Social Media presence on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 6. Weighting: 5%

Review Profile

We analysed the public review profiles of each of the travel companies focusing on the major independent 3rd party review platforms like Trustpilot, Tourradar, Stride, Tripadvisor, Feefo and Facebook. We divided our review score into two parts: 1. Size of Review Profile, and 2. Overall Quality of Reviews. Each part was scored on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 6. Weighting: 80%

Responsible Travel Practices

We reviewed each travel operator's website and read their statements about responsible travel / ethics / sustainability. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%

Awards and Accreditations

We explored each travel operator's website to uncover evidence of accreditations like ABTA, ATOL, ATTA and AITO (among others), and official awards / recognitions from the travel industry. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%

Breadth of Offering

We analysed the breadth and scale of each operator's tour offerings, focusing on the number of tours offered, countries covered and number of activities. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%

We recognise that smaller travel companies would struggle to compete on some of the criteria above.

For example, a small tour operator would most likely have significantly less web traffic and a smaller social presence than a big travel operator. Equally, they would likely have a smaller scale and breadth of offering.

To provide a level playing field, we therefore weighted our overall score heavily towards 3rd party reviews - a criteria that all operators can fairly compete on.

The total review score counts 80% towards the overall score, with the rest of the criteria accounting for 20%.

Table of Adventure Travel Company Data

Below is the raw data we captured for each adventure travel company during our analysis. Please note, metrics like traffic, social media followers and reviews are dynamic and change overtime. The data below is a snapshot of these metrics as of April / May 2019.

We will revise these numbers annually.

How does an adventure tour work?

Most of the adventure holidays are small group tours. They are great ways to explore, meet people (maybe even friends for life) and enjoy experiences you may never have otherwise had. They're travels best kept secret!

The small groups are typically  around 10 people and are made up of solo travellers, couples and friends from all over the world. If you ever want to find out who's booked just ask our team or you can submit a 'Who's Going?' query on any available date.

Each group has a guide who'll meet you on day one and be with you all the through your adventure until the end.

Details about what's included and not included can be found on any adventure page or from the brochures which are free to download.

Who goes on adventures?

All sorts of people! We have customers age 18 to well over 80 years old.

We have solo travellers couples, friends and families.

Ad adventure holiday is an experience.

Some of our adventures are challenging and some are not. Some are guided trips of exploration whilst some will take you to a high peak.

There is something for everyone.

Can I be a solo traveller?

YES! Up to 50% of our customers are solo travellers and so loads of adventures are geared up for those travelling alone.

If you're a solo traveller you'll be with a group which means you'll make loads of new friends, you're safe and you're going to have a lot of fun.

Typically solo travellers can opt to have their own room (usually with a small surcharge) or you can be paired with someone of the same gender and age if possible.

Can I speak to someone?

Yes. We have a team of experts available to help. You can contact via phone, email or chat. We'll always get back to you quickly if not immediately.

Our team have multiple years experience each in the adventure holiday sector with some even being ex-expedition leaders. We really pride ourselves on our team as we think they're the best in the business.

Are you ATOL registered?

Yes. In the UK we're members of ABTA which is a trade body and we have an ATOL, a license which allows us to sell flights and this is ran by the civil aviation authority.

Both bodies monitor our business monthly.

For anyone outside of the UK, if a company in the UK sells flights it must have an ATOL, it's a legal requirement. Along with this are certain financial protection measures to be in place. The conclusion is that we protect customers monies until they actually go on holiday.

No matter where you are in the world, your money is safe when you make a booking. It stays in a bank account until you depart.

Lots (probably most here in the UK) of travel companies tell customers their money is safe but really they use it and insure it rather than actually protecting it. We actually protect it.

About The Adventure People

Most of the adventure holidays we feature are small group guided trips starting at point A and ending at point B with lots of experiences in-between.

We are part of the company World Adventures. We established in 2017. We have an ATOL license and are members of ABTA.

Our office is in south London but our team are based all over the United Kingdom.

Shopping Cart

Shopping cart items, travel leaders and the adventure travel trade association partner to offer exclusive active & adventure travel specialist certification.

adventure travel specialist

This exclusive partnership will provide Travel Leaders travel agents with a unique and valuable designation to help them better serve a growing number of active and adventure travelers.

Print

Travel Leaders’ Active & Adventure Travel Specialists will be added to the ATTA consumer website ( www.adventure.travel ), providing qualified leads and new sales opportunities to agents specializing in this growing segment of the travel industry – adding to the successful, qualified leads already provided by Travel Leaders’ Agent Profiler . The new partnership will also include special invitations, exclusively for select Travel Leaders travel agents, to attend various ATTA conferences and events domestically and internationally, along with related adventure travel experiences pre- and post-conference.

The cornerstone of the collaboration is the exclusive specialist training program. Candidates in Travel Leaders’ Active & Adventure Travel Specialist program will have to complete modules that demonstrate a range of background and skills that Travel Leaders and ATTA jointly regard as prerequisites in order to be recognized as knowledgeable, respected specialists in this niche. The program and the full extent of the relationship between the two organizations is being announced at Travel Leaders’ Regional Meetings this month.

“By joining together with the ATTA, which is at the forefront of the active and adventure travel segment, our specialist program will provide our members with a unique, highly-valuable and industry-respected designation. Moreover, being able to view agent profiles on Travelleaders.com and the ATTA consumer website that highlight travel agent specializations and expertise, adventure travelers will have added peace of mind as they easily connect with Travel Leaders travel agents who have an incredible base of expertise and knowledge in these types of vacations,” said Mr. Roger E. Block, CTC, President of Travel Leaders Franchise Group. “In addition, together with the ATTA, we are building bridges with adventure travel destinations operators that will provide our clientele with greater access to customized experiences.”

“This partnership is well timed to set Travel Leaders’ specialists up for success as well as ATTA travel advisor members who choose to take part,” commented Mr. Shannon Stowell, President of the ATTA. “The adventure travel industry is now a $263 billion industry, compared to $89 billion in 2009. For several years now, we have been searching for a way to connect ATTA’s more than 1,000 members – including tour operators, destination marketing organizations, tourism boards, and accommodations – with top travel agent professionals to cultivate the perfect experience for each client. This partnership is that answer and more. Now we will have connections to educated and vetted travel agents.”

While the active and adventure travel markets involve some level of physical activity, much of what encompasses the “active” niche includes soft adventure such as trekking, cycling, kayaking and culturally-immersive travel experiences. Extreme adventures such as skydiving, caving or mountaineering make up a much smaller, but important opposite end of the spectrum. Through the training, agents are required to become familiar with the various tours offered through adventure travel tour operators and the opportunities available in destinations well known for their active and cultural components.

The Travel Leaders Active & Adventure Travel Specialist program is modeled on the successful, existing Travel Leaders’ Luxury Travel Specialist and Honeymoon & Destination Wedding Specialist programs, and others offered via Travel Leaders’ Education & Training department. The ATTA currently offers AdventureEDU courses for tour operators, governments and associations seeking to deliver adventure travel experiences in a safe and sustainable practice. However, the exclusive, joint program with Travel Leaders will be the ATTA’s first educational program geared exclusively for travel agents.

Adventures in Good Company

Hiking in Maine is a feast for the senses.

For a small group trip designed specifically for active women, Adventures in Good Company is the crème de la crème. Founded in 1999, over 1,000 wanderers are empowered each year to go on a hiking, backpacking, or sea kayaking jaunt that usurps all others. Tours are expertly planned and organized down to the finest details, focusing on getting women in the outdoors while inspiring meaningful friendships and connections along the way.

Where to Go: Challenge yourself on an Appalachian Trail hiking adventure in Maine , culminating with an adventurous climb to the top of Katahdin, the highest mountain in the state at 5,269 feet. The best part: each day you’ll return to a hot meal, shower, and comfy bed. You’ll meet new friends on this journey, women who will motivate and encourage you as you make your way across ruggedly picturesque landscapes. You will learn that you are stronger than you think and capable of doing hard things.

Education and Training Requirements

High school.

If you are considering the business end of travel—working in a brokerage, planning tours, or eventually owning your own tour-packaging business—you should start taking business courses while still in high school. Accounting, computer science, mathematics or any other business-related course will give you a good start. Classes in geography, geology, social studies, and history might also help you understand and discuss the locations you may be dealing with. It is important to take a foreign language, a study you will probably need to continue throughout your career. Photography classes will be useful—especially if you plan to operate a firm that specializes in nature photography expeditions. Finally, classes in English or speech are always good choices for helping you develop the ability and confidence to deal with people.

If you are more interested in the fieldwork aspect of adventure travel, you will need to take classes that help you understand how the earth’s environment and ecosystem work. Because tour guides often explain the natural history of a location or educate tour groups on local wildlife and plant life, classes in earth science, biology, and geology are excellent choices. Classes that teach you about the social history of various places, such as social studies or anthropology, might also be beneficial.

Postsecondary Education

There are several different approaches you can take to prepare for a career in adventure travel. While it may not be necessary for all jobs, a college degree will likely give you a competitive edge in most employment situations. If you choose to obtain a college degree, some options for majors might be earth science, biology, geology, natural history, or environmental affairs. If you hope to become involved with an intensely physical form of adventure travel, a degree in health, physical education, or recreation may be a good choice.

If you are more interested in the planning and reservations end of adventure travel, a college degree in business is a good choice. Some adventure travel brokers suggest that attending one of the many travel agent schools also provides a good background for the administrative aspects of the business.

It may be possible to find a job in adventure travel without college training, if you happen to be very experienced and skilled in some form of adventure activity. If you choose this path, you should spend as much time as possible developing whatever skill interests you. There are classes, clubs, and groups that can teach you anything from beginning diving to advanced rock climbing.

Certification

The International Ecotourism Society offers the Certificate in Sustainable Tourism Management. The self-managed program, which can be completed online, awards three certificates: TIES Green Certificate, TIES Certificate in Sustainable Tourism Management, and TIES Master Certificate in Sustainable Tourism. Visit https://www.ecotourism.org for more information.

Other Education or Training

The Travel Institute offers educational programs such as sales skills development courses and destination specialist courses, which provide a detailed knowledge of various geographic regions of the world. The Outdoor Industry Association offers the Skip Yowell Future Leadership Academy, a six-month “immersive leadership experience for the next generation of outdoor industry ambassadors and game-changers.” Two education tracks are available: Individual Focused Learning and Outdoor Industry Focused Learning.

Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or licensing.

The Travel Institute offers the designations of certified travel associate, certified travel counselor, and certified travel industry executive to applicants who complete education and experience requirements. While such certification is not required, it may be helpful to those running their own travel businesses. Many employers do require employees to have certification in certain areas, such as CPR and first aid. Also, depending on the job, you may need special certification or licensing, such as scuba certification so that you can lead diving activities, or licensing as a commercial driver so that you can transport clients in a company van or other vehicle. If you plan to open your own adventure tour operation, you will need to apply for a business license. Check with your local government offices for details on how to obtain one. Some employers may have minimum age requirements for those in certain positions.

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Aspiring adventure travel specialists should try to obtain experience working or volunteering at an adventure travel company.

Adventure travel tour guides need to have a passion for sharing their love of nature and their knowledge with others. Also, because of the nature of this job, you should be in good physical shape. Other important qualities to have are maturity, responsibility, and common sense, especially when leading groups of travelers into the relative unknown.

Adventure travel professionals who work in an office developing and selling tours need some different personal qualities than those who work in the field. While being an active, outdoorsy person may help you sell tours, it is not a requirement for working in this branch of adventure travel. Good work ethics, attention to detail, and good organizational skills are more significant.

Our favorite Day trip

Río samaná conservation, popular holidays, tailor made adventures, travel with a purpose, explore the wilder side of colombia, meet our team, what people say.

“The Rio Samana Rafting Experience was the best time ever. It was filled with new experiences and packed of adventure. The experienced guides, Jules and Didier were funny, friendly and made us feel safe and secure at all times. They provided our meals; never thought pasta by fire could taste so great. I’ve already shared this experience with so many family and friends. I will definitely do this again. I felt like Superwoman after I completed Day 2.”

“JJ was an excellent guide. He spoke good English and gave lots of interesting insight. The tour was well put together, starting with local coffee, then climbing the big rock at Guatapé, followed by a boat tour showing one of Escobar’s houses and Carol G’s house, then an authentic Colombian meal at a restaurant, and exploring the town of Guatapé. It was a good day.”

We had the most fantastic Paramo Trek with Expedition Colombia! Their team was extremely accommodating for our group of 8 in Medellín for a conference. Answered so many questions ahead of time to make sure we were properly prepared for this strenuous but gorgeous hike through a unique ecosystem. Camila, Erwin, John Freddy and our driver thank you for such an enjoyable day!

The communication was excellent (what to bring, expect, paperwork, etc). The guides were experienced, dependable, and we trusted them fully to guide us through the class 4+ rapids. The scenery was breathtaking with many opportunities to swim in calm waters. The food exceeded expectations – I was not expecting the best vegan protein meal served with low environmental impact on banana leaves! What an awesome day!!!

We went with Expedition Colombia on a rafting trip down the Rio Verde and it was one of the most incredible experiences we’ve had in Colombia so far and we’ve been here for a couple months. The team was very helpful, informational, and a pleasure to spend time with. The journey to the river was beautiful, the lunch was eco-friendly and delicious, and the rafting trip was incredibly unique and beautiful. The river is secluded, very untouched, and surrounded by jungle, rafting down it was a unique and different way to see nature in colombia. Definitely recommend this adventure!

June, 2019, Trip Advisor

Tatan and Didier did an amazing job and this day trip was the highlight of our trip. Their English was perfect. We started off with a rocky start, the company was going to switch our trip to another rafting trip because they didn’t get enough participants, but we convinced them to take us by partially paying for an additional person and it was worth it. The 6AM pickup is worth it. After getting picked up and driven to the meeting point, we had a nice breakfast then a jeep rode up and down dirt rides where we got to the mules. We hiked down to the river while the mules carried the kayaks and rafts on their backs. The hike is intense and not the easiest. Wear real hiking boots/old sneakers that you don’t mind getting really muddy. The class 4 rapids were a lot of fun. We got to swim in a waterfall and relax in the river. They also took several pics and videos, so we get to remember this forever.

5 Moscow hiking trails that make for great adventure

adventure travel specialist

1. Pilgrim’s road

adventure travel specialist

Since ancient times Russian Orthodox believers have made pilgrimages from Moscow to one of the country’s most important monasteries, the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in the town of Sergeyev Posad. Starting from the very center of Moscow, the route goes for over 100 km and can take four days; on the way you pass interesting historic and religious sites. It’s a beginner-level route, and there are many villages and towns near the trail so you’ll be able to easily find food and water if necessary. Staying in hotels is also possible.

Fun fact: Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, the daughter of Peter the Great, made such a trek, but in her own way.  She would hike for 2-3 km, then return to the palace by coach, and resume the next day from the place she had reached the day before. The trip lasted for months, but it wasn’t very tiring. Nice approach, ha?

2. Green circle around Moscow

adventure travel specialist

Want to get close to nature but don’t have time to leave the city? This trail around the city goes through Moscow parks and green zones. One can hike all summer and not get bored! It’s rather long - 158 km - so it’ll be hard to finish in one go; better to consider a few walks on different weekends. The route is suitable for family hikes, jogging, mountain biking, Nordic walking and winter skiing.

adventure travel specialist

An ideal weekend hike is a beginner-level marked trail between the towns of Dolgoprudny and Mytishchi, which are 35 minutes from Moscow by train. At 19.8 km long, the route can be finished in a day or two and goes through Belyaninovo village where one can buy food and water. There are no natural water sources on the way so take some with you. The name comes from the MIPT university in Dolgoprudny that’s known as “Fiztech.”

4. Serednikovo

adventure travel specialist

A shorter trail (up to six hours) goes from Firsanovka station (45 minutes by train from Moscow) to Serednikovo village, which is known for the Serednikovo estate, a historical residence of Russian nobles and a place where the young writer, Mikhail Lermontov, spent his summers. The route goes through forests and rivers, as well as a lake called “Shepkino swamp,” the site of the annual Shepka ethnic festival.

5. Mitino to Krasnogorskaya

adventure travel specialist

This 15-km route from Mitino metro station to Krasnogorskaya train station can be done in five hours and takes you through forest trails with small rivers and deep ravines. It features many ups and downs, attracting hikers and also skiers, cyclists and joggers. The latter means that you might occasionally see a group of athletes; so be ready to move aside and let them safely pass you. There are natural water sources on the way, but don’t drink there  - buy water supplies in advance.
