20+ Best Safari extensions for iPhone and iPad in 2024

Browser extensions are a great way to simplify and quicken menial tasks. And thanks to iOS 15 and later, Safari on iPhone and iPad now supports an array of helpful and handy extensions. I have explored the App Store extensively to find the best Safari extensions for the iPhone and iPad, and here are my top picks.

But before we move on to the listing, let’s see how you can enable Safari extensions on your iPhone and iPad.

How to use Safari extensions on iPhone and iPad

There are two major types of Safari extensions currently available for iPhone and iPad:

  • Embedded – Extensions that run in the background like content blockers, auto-fill passwords, auto-correct grammar, etc. However, you may have to turn it on via Settings → Safari → Extensions → toggle on the extension .
  • Manual – Extensions that you’ll have to manually run from the Share Sheet or the Extension tab, quite like clicking a Safari extension in Mac .

How to use Safari extensions on iPhone and iPad

For more details, check out our step-by-step guide on using Safari extension on iPhone and iPad .

Best Safari extension for security and protection

1. adguard – block ads on the go.

Extension category – Embedded

AdGuard Best Safari Extension for blocking ads

99.99% of web surfers hate ads. But if you love or enjoy those disturbing elements, feel free to skip to the next extension. However, it is way more than a free tool to block ads and trackers.

AdGuard also offers advanced tracking protection, up to 4x faster speed acceleration, reduced traffic consumption, better battery performance, enabling a faster, smoother web surfing experience.

The neat thing is that you can manage what content to block, i.e., which filters, rules, and exceptions to apply. And if you want to avail custom or advanced security filters and DNS privacy, the premium version could help.

Key features

  • Simple, intuitive UI
  • Array of features
  • Powerful ad filters
  • Variety of language-specific filters
  • Ad blocker in Safari

Price: Free (Subscription starts at $0.99/month)

2. 1Password – Protect your passwords and more

1Password Safari extension for iPhone and iPad

1Password becomes even smarter and smoother with the iOS 15 support. Get immediate access to everything stored in 1Password directly from iPhone/iPad Safari, from passwords and cards to notes.

Moreover, it could autofill logins, credit cards, emails, 2FA code, addresses, and more across multiple pages. It will also give in-page filling suggestions, similar to its desktop counterpart. Indeed, it is one of the most potent password managers out there.

What I absolutely adore is that you can organize your passwords under different categories for easy access. However, it no longer offers a free plan, which might be a sore point for many users.

  • One tap sign-in
  • Auto-fill forms and more
  • Smart Passwords suggestions
  • Strong encryption
  • 30-day trial period

Price: Free (Monthly subscription for $3.99)

3. Clario – Powerful security solution

Clario powerful Safari extensions for iPhone and iPad

If secure browsing is your no.1 concern, Clario is the best bet for you. For starters, it offers identity protection with a data breach monitor that helps protect your passwords, card details, and other info. The ad blocker ensures that you have a clean and annoyance-free time online.

Plus, a built-in reliable VPN encrypts your data, whether you’re at the home, office, or public network, without compromising on browsing speed. Clario also offers multiplatform support, i.e., you can access it across all your devices: Mac, iPhone, iPad, and web.

There’s also 24/7 live expert assistance that’ll help you through any related roadblocks. The only chink in the armor is that it’s expensive, and you’ll have to cough up $9/month for a single device.

  • Built-in VPN
  • Data breach monitor
  • 24/7 expert assistance
  • 7-day trial period

Price: Free (Monthly subscription starts at $9)

The app boasts over 100 enhancements suggestions in its gallery. Plus, it auto-suggests relevant enhancements as you surf websites. You can even add websites, preferred news sites, and more as favorites to create a personalized search engine.

Although, if you aren’t a pro at these things, the Hyperweb app might look a bit scary. I hope the makers add a tutorial within the app or on their website to help noobs maneuver the app.

  • Superbly versatile app
  • Block ads, cookies, and more
  • Auto-enhancement suggestions

addons for safari ios

One of the handiest types of software in anyone’s quiver is the browser extension: those cool little applets that let your browser do what you want it to do. And one of the nicest things about iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 is that you can now add extensions to the Safari browser. Even though this is a new feature that launched with the latest iOS version, there are already a number of useful extensions available for you to add.

What follows is a rundown on how to add extensions to your Safari app — while we’ve illustrated the process using an iPhone, you can follow the same basic directions with an iPad. We’ve also included a sampling of some extensions you can try.

How to add extensions

  • Tap on the Settings app.
  • Scroll down to and select Safari > Extensions.
  • Any extensions that you’ve already installed will be listed here. Tap on “More Extensions” if you’d like to see what’s available in the App Store. (You can also simply go to the App Store and search on “Safari Extensions.”)

In your settings, go to Safari > Extensions to see your current extensions and get new ones.

  • Once you’ve installed your first extension, you’ll see a little “puzzle piece” icon on the left side of Safari’s address bar. Tap that, and the menu that pops up will include your current extensions plus a “Manage Extensions” selection, which lets you toggle your extensions on and off.

It’s simple to install a new extension from the App Store.

Some extensions to try

This is a small sampling of some of the extensions that you can now access via the App Store. While there are not many extensions yet available (compared to the number of extensions for, say, Chrome), it’s a pretty safe bet that there will be lots more to come over the next few months.

Amplosion ($2.99)

AMP, which is short for “Accelerated Mobile Pages,” is a web format created by Google to optimize search results for mobile browsers. However, if you’d rather not have Google tweaking the webpages you upload, you can use Amplosion to redirect the AMP links that show up in search results into normal mobile links.

Noir ($2.99)

When you’re browsing at night and you’ve set your iPhone or iPad to dark mode, you will often hit a website that is bright enough to make your eyes water. Noir allows you to set a dark mode for all the websites you visit.

1Password (subscription needed)

1Password is a well-known and respected password manager . If you’re a 1Password user, there’s no question that you’re going to want to add this one to your mobile Safari app.

Super Agent for Safari (free)

This handy extension automatically fills out a website’s cookie consent forms based on your preferences, which can save you a lot of time and irritation.

Web Inspector (free)

Something for developers: an app that lets you inspect the HTML coding of a website, modify it, debug it, and perform other essential tasks.

iOS 15 Safari Extensions Worth Checking Out

With iOS 15, Apple introduced a new design and a range of new features , including better support for extensions. Safari in iOS 15 supports web extensions, which can be downloaded and installed through the App Store , so there are a much wider range of extension options for you to choose from.

iOs 15 Safari Feature

  • 1Password (Subscription Required) - For 1Password users, the 1Password extension allows users to input their saved 1Password information in Safari, similar to how it works on the Mac. 1Password can autofill logins, passwords, credit card information, two-factor authentication codes, and more. A 1Password subscription is required, which is priced at $2.99 per month.
  • Amplosion ($2.99) - Amplosion redirects Google's AMP pages and links to standard links in Safari, which is a good solution for those who don't like AMP pages. Amplosion, designed by Apollo creator Christian Selig, is open source and designed with transparency so users can verify what the extension is doing.
  • Apollo (Free) - Reddit app Apollo has a new Safari extension that's designed to allow the Apollo app to open any Reddit weblink rather than requiring the link to be opened in the Reddit app. If you pair Apollo with Amplosion, Safari will open any Safari Reddit link in the Apollo app automatically, which is great for those who prefer Apollo to the official Reddit app. Apollo is free, but the Pro unlock costs $4.99.
  • Achoo - ($0.99) - Another extension created by Christian Selig, Achoo is an HTML viewer and inspector. If you need to see the HTML of a webpage on your iPhone and iPad , this is a simple app worth picking up. You can inspect HTML, copy/paste it, and edit it.
  • StopTheMadness ($7.99) - StopTheMadness is a privacy protecting extension that has several functions. It stops Google from loading AMP pages, ends clickjacking in Google search results, Facebook, and Gmail, removes tracking parameters from the ends of URLs, loads unshortened versions of URLs, prevents videos from autoplaying, and more. It's expensive, but for those who want to cut out a lot of the Safari browsing annoyances, it's worth checking out.
  • Super Agent (Free) - Super Agent is an extension that automatically fills in cookie consent forms based on your preferences, getting rid of frustrating cookie pop up forms.
  • Overamped ($1.99) - Overamped is another extension that is designed to direct AMP and Yandex Turbo to the original sites, disabling AMP and Yandex Turbo in Safari.
  • Dark Reader ($4.99) - Dark Reader for Safari brings Dark Mode to every website by adding dark themes for websites that don't support ‌Dark Mode‌ natively. There are controls for adjusting brightness and contrast, swapping between Dynamic and Filter mode, toggling the dark themes off for individual websites, and more.
  • Noir ($2.99) - If you have ‌Dark Mode‌ turned on and visit a website that does not support it, Noir will automatically turn it dark so that you're not blinded by a sudden bright webpage with ‌Dark Mode‌ enabled. Noir only activates when a website does not have a ‌Dark Mode‌ option, and you can choose to turn ‌Dark Mode‌ on or off on a site by site basis.
  • Convusic ($0.99) - Convusic is a Safari extension that's designed to open any Spotify link in Apple Music . If you're an ‌Apple Music‌ subscriber and often come across Spotify links but still want to hear the songs, this extension offers a solution. When installed, you can choose which app will open music streaming links. It works both ways - Spotify users can set it to open ‌Apple Music‌ songs in Spotify, and ‌Apple Music‌ users can set it to open Spotify songs in ‌Apple Music‌.

Installing Extensions

To install an extension, you need to download the extension app from the ‌App Store‌ and then open up the Safari section of the Settings app. From there, tap on "Extensions" and select the toggle next to the extension you want to enable.

If you want to find more extensions, just tap on the "More Extensions" button to go to the "Safari Extensions" section in the ‌App Store‌.

Alternatively, extensions can also be managed right in the browser window by tapping on the "Aa" button and then choosing the "Manage Extensions" option.

Should also be pointed out that those of us who previously paid for 1Password, and are still using stand alone vaults with no subscription, can not only NOT use the new extension, but they took away the existing share sheet with no warning.

How to add and enable extensions in Safari for iPhone and iPad

Ipad Mini 6 Review Safari

  • How to add an extension to Safari
  • How to enable an extension in Safari

If you use Safari on your Mac, then you may be familiar with extensions. These are basically add-ons for Safari that you can customize the browser with, and they enhance your overall user experience. Since Safari itself is pretty barebones to start with, having extensions can greatly improve the usability of Apple's native browser.

With iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, Apple added extensions for mobile Safari, bringing it more in line with the desktop version. But how do you go about adding and enabling them? Don't worry, we'll show you the ropes.

How to add an extension to Safari on iPhone and iPad

Before you can start using Safari extensions, you'll need apps that support the feature first. You also want to make sure that you are running iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 on your best iPhone and favorite iPad , respectively. Since this is a brand new feature, you need to be running the latest software for it to work. It won't be available with iOS/iPadOS 14 and earlier.

You can add an extension to Safari by downloading apps with Safari extensions just like any other app or game on the App Store. You can simply search for "Safari extensions" on the App Store search page, or check a simple list that Apple has with some extension apps .

For a full collection of all supported apps on the App Store, you can get to it from the Settings app.

  • Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Scroll down and tap Safari .
  • Tap Extensions .
  • Scroll down and tap More Extensions . This takes you to the App Store with all apps that support extensions.
  • Tap Get (Free) or $X.XX on the apps with Safari extensions that you want to use.
  • Download or purchase the app like you would with any other app or game.

How to enable an extension in Safari on iPhone and iPad

Once you have your apps with Safari extensions, you need to make sure that they are enabled before they can start working. There are two ways to go about this: from Settings, or directly in Safari.

To do this from Safari :

  • Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap the Reader/Extensions button in the toolbar . It looks like "AA" with a puzzle piece next to it.
  • In the menu that pops up, tap Manage Extensions .
  • Turn the toggle to ON (green) for any extension you want to use.
  • Optionally, to disable an extension, just make sure the toggle is OFF (gray).

7 iphone and ipad safari extensions worth installing.

Safari Extensions arrived in iOS 15, so we made a list of our favorites.

Quick Links

Managing extensions for safari on iphone and ipad, dark mode everywhere: turn off the lights or nitefall, manage your tab problem: startpage.ai, dismiss cookie permissions pop-ups: super agent, liberate your videos: pipifier, manage your passwords: 1password, disable amp and much more: hyperweb, a welcome enhancement for safari.

With the arrival of iOS 15, Safari for iPhone and iPad gained proper extensions. Apple has taken the same curated App Store approach as it did with Safari for Mac, vastly improving Safari's web browsing capabilities.

Here are some of the highlights, and a brief overview of how extensions work on iOS and iPadOS.

Extensions for the Safari browser on iPhone and iPad are managed using the App Store. You can search for new extensions as you would any other app, and updates are managed by the App Store and can be applied automatically too.

You'll even find a dedicated Safari Extensions category in the App Store app by tapping the Apps tab then scrolling down to "Top Categories" and tapping See All > Safari Extensions.

When you have enabled one or more extensions you will see a small icon in the address bar that looks like a puzzle piece. Tapping on this will show active extensions and a "Manage Extensions" option where you can enable and disable extensions quickly.

Due to Apple's careful approach to privacy in iOS , expect to be asked to grant permission to certain websites or services. Some apps require "Access" to every website they are designed to work with, while others may ask to filter your traffic if they are designed to block certain types of content.

You can go to Settings > Safari > Extensions to see a list of currently installed extensions, what each has access to, and any privacy disclosures. You can also give an extension full access to all websites here, which gets rid of the frequent permissions pop-ups.

You should make sure you fully understand the risks of allowing an app developer to access this information. A similar comparison can be made to third party keyboards , which may require "Full Access" and thus be able to store or transmit anything that is typed.

Many websites now support dark themes either with a toggle or by detecting your device's current settings. Many still don't, and that's a problem when you're trying to browse at night. Turn Off the Lights is one such free extension that attempts to remedy this.

On Safari, the app works by adding a semi-transparent dark overlay. This has the effect of dimming page content without inverting colors, so things appear much dimmer. The benefit of this approach is that it leaves page styles alone which means you're less likely to run into problems with page styles or readability.

It's not foolproof and some websites resist the extension, while the overlay can be a little temperamental at times. It also lacks the customization that you'll find on the desktop version.

Nitefall is a good alternative if Turn Off the Lights falls short. It's also free but can only be used on a limited number (25) of websites. It has three dark themes, support for maps, and site-specific settings but if you want to use it on more websites you'll need to upgrade for a one-off fee of $3.99.

Do you have a nasty tab habit? Culling hundreds of tabs using Safari's tiled view is tedious even on the latest devices. It's not possible to read the full website name or URL, and many older tab previews will be purged. Startpage.ai makes this process much easier.

Once you've set new tabs to open with Startpage.ai you'll see a neat list of all current tabs, with the most recently used at the top. Each tab title is listed with its URL, and you can even filter tabs using the search bar at the top. You can then close each tab with a tap of the red "Close" button.

There's even a dark mode toggle at the top of the screen for managing your tab addiction after dark. An essential extension for anyone who never closes tabs, and something Apple should probably copy to make managing tabs in future versions of Safari less of a mess.

Cookie warnings are one of the most annoying things on the modern internet. It's not necessarily a bad thing that websites now have to ask you before tracking you or gathering information, but cookie warnings introduce additional steps to reading almost any article on the web.

Super Agent is one extension that can help. Install the extension then set your cookie preferences in the app and let Super Agent take care of the rest. The extension will action your preferences on a large number of websites (though not all websites are supported).

Cookies are split into three sections: advertising, functional, and performance. Any that don't fit these categories are automatically blocked. There's no subscription, and the accompanying app makes it easy to manage your preferences.

Previously a plug-in for the desktop version of Safari, PiPifier does one thing and it does it well: restoring picture-in-picture functionality to videos across the web. Apple added this handy feature to Safari in iOS 14, but it hasn't always worked everywhere. The feature allows you to watch a video in a frame while using other apps, and it has a transformative effect on iPhone and iPad multitasking.

Notably, YouTube blocks picture-in-picture mode on Safari for iPhone and iPad in a bid to get you to use the YouTube app. The YouTube app currently sells this feature back to you as part of a YouTube Red subscription. PiPifier restores picture-in-picture mode to the web version of YouTube, allowing you to use the full functionality of Safari with YouTube once more.

If you use 1Password then the app's accompanying Safari extension provides a "desktop-class" experience. Of course, the extension isn't going to be of much use to you if you use another service like LastPass or Apple's iCloud Keychain (which already integrates nicely with Safari ).

You can use the extension to autofill details like passwords , credit card details , two-factor authentication codes , and more. You can also quickly access any favorite credentials or notes, and add new items to your 1Password account.

If you want one extension that includes most of the separate enhancements listed above, Hyperweb is what you're looking for. It's the Swiss army knife of mobile Safari extensions, providing features like dark mode (by inverting colors), cookie pop-up management, picture-in-picture plus content blocking, and search engine personalization too.

Related: What Is Google AMP, and Why Is It In My Search Results?

Hyperweb also allows you to apply custom styles and run custom user scripts from websites like Stylish and Greasy Fork which can change the look and feel of some of your favorite websites. It also blocks Google's AMP (Accelerated Mobile Project) pages when visiting from a search engine, and it's currently the only free extension to do so.

If you use third-party apps for services like Twitter, Reddit, or YouTube you can force content to open in apps like Tweetbot, Apollo, or Syndromi. You can also direct Apple Maps to Google Maps, open streams in apps like VLC, or send PDFs to PDF Expert.

Hyperweb's most powerful feature allows you to create your own rules known as local enhancements. You can set "If" and "Then" parameters that target specific URLs, domains, pages, and search engines that go well beyond the included enhancements. You can only create one of these rules in the free version, or you can pay $2.99/month to unlock the extension's functionality.

Extensions are a welcoming addition but I don’t like how it was integrated into the AppStore meaning browser extension developers would need to buy an Apple Developer account as opposed to Edge and Firefox being free to develop for.

Add more functionality to Safari

Like Chrome , Safari isn't just a stagnant web browser, it also has additional functionality via its Safari Extension plugins which take seconds to install . A form of add-on, Safari extensions now come bundled with relevant Mac apps, as well as via the App Store.

Whether you're looking for productivity hacks, easy ways of saving money on your shopping, or ways to make your browsing experience more pleasant, there's a Safari extension for you.

Looking for great Chrome extensions? There are plenty out there.

Grammar Checker: Grammarly

Simple and clear writing suggestions.

You need a subscription to get the most from it.

Grammarly is there for those times when you're not quite sure if your spelling or grammar is up to scratch. It highlights issues via a red line underneath a word and allows you to easily correct them, whether you happen to be typing a Facebook status or a blog post. It's a useful service that's like a little nudge in the right direction when trying to improve your writing ability.

Cinema Style Lighting Effect: Turn Off the Lights

Neat atmospheric lighting effect.

Need to load the separate app to change settings.

One of the most effective things at the cinema is how the lights go down and you can focus solely on the cinema screen. Turn Off the Lights offers that same kind of effect on your laptop or desktop.

When on YouTube or another video based site, click the lightbulb icon on Safari, and the lights around the video playing are immediately dimmed. You can focus on the screen itself rather than everything going on around it. To get the full effect, you need to tweak some settings, but it's a neat way of adding some atmosphere when watching a video.

Price Comparer: PriceBlink

Easy to compare prices.

Only works in the U.S. and U.K.

PriceBlink keeps an eye on prices so you don't have to. Go to somewhere like Amazon or eBay, and the moment you load an item, PriceBlink pops up with its price elsewhere. You can instantly see if Amazon really is offering the best price or if there's somewhere cheaper you could switch to. If a better alternative is listed, click the site, and PriceBlink loads the alternate option in a separate tab. This simple extension could save you a lot of money over time.

Password Management: LastPass

Extra layer of protection for passwords.

Little convoluted to setup.

Safari has built-in password management, but LastPass is much better at the job. It works across multiple devices and also gives you somewhere to store files and notes securely.

A lot of the time, you'll need to delve into the separate app to use it fully, but the Safari extension gives you the ability to generate secure passwords, quickly fill in forms, or add notes, all directly from your browser. It's a real game changer for security and privacy concerns.

Easy Coupon Codes: Honey

Easy to browse.

Most coupons are for the U.S. only.

Online, you can find thousands of coupon codes and offers, but it's likely that you forget to look them up until you've already ordered something. At the touch of a button, you can open Honey to the side of Safari, and check out the coupons available to you.

The extension offers up plenty of popular retailers such as Macy's, Bloomingdale's, eBay, and Sears. Just tap on the name of the retailer, and you can look up coupons, as well as details on how long ago they worked correctly. Honey also has a reward scheme for extra bonuses.

Link Saving: Pocket

Great for storing links for later reference.

You need to sign up first.

How often do you find yourself looking at a great long-form article and realizing you don't have the time to read it right now? With Pocket, you just need to click the "Save to Pocket" button, and the link saves to your account so you can easily consult it later on. It works across multiple devices and you can tag and label articles so that everything is neatly organized.

Ad blocker: Adblock Plus

Easy to set up.

Settings can be a little tricky.

No one likes obtrusive ads when trying to read an interesting article online. Adblock Plus makes it simple to block ads and tracking ads that bug you, while "safelisting" websites that you want to see all the ads for. Adblock Plus takes a responsible approach to ads with an option allowing for "acceptable ads," appreciating that website owners still need to generate revenue, while saving you the hassle of the worst kind of adverts.

Picture in Picture: PiPer

Supports many different video sites.

Liable to dent your productivity.

Being able to multitask is always a valuable skill. While you can switch between windows and tabs, it hasn't been possible to have YouTube or Netflix running alongside what you're working on in Safari.

PiPer changes all that. Via its extension, you can easily place a video in the corner of your screen, allowing you to continue working while the video plays to the side. It's a great tool for juggling multiple things together.

Translation: Translate

Translates from dozens of languages.

You need to poke around in settings to gain full benefits.

One of the best things about Chrome is its ability to translate websites for you. Translate brings that functionality to Safari. Simply go to a website, tap the translate button, and Translate converts everything to English via Google Translate or Bing Translate. It takes a moment or two but you can see it being converted before your eyes which is neat. Translations are reasonably accurate too.

How to use Safari extensions in iOS 15

Safari gains extensions in iOS 15

addons for safari ios

You only notice web browser extensions when you haven't got them. Safari's always lagged behind Chrome, the king of unnecessary extensions, but it has been catching up on the Mac . And now it could do on iOS 15 , too.

Safari on iOS 15 has support for extensions that change how the browser works, or adds extra functionality to it. The browser has extension support, Apple has made it mostly easy to add in extensions you want, everything should be fine.

And everything probably will be fine when iOS 15 has officially been out for a time and developers have done their work. Right now, the process for installing extensions is clear, but all you can get are ad and content blockers. That's fine, but you could use those before.

It's confusing how Apple surfaces them as extensions when it then says they're not, too. But once we can do this for real, you're going to be diving in to set up extensions from third0party developers.

How to install Safari extensions in iOS 15

  • Open Settings
  • Scroll down to Safari and tap
  • Under the General heading, tap Extensions
  • Tap More Extensions
  • Follow the App Store prompts to find and install apps with extensions
  • When the apps are installed, return to this Settings page and turn on the extension

When you first go into this area of Settings , iOS says that you have No Extensions Installed . After you've been through this process and got some, it will still say No Extensions Installed — even as it lists the ones you've got.

That's down to this issue of there not really being any extensions available, even as the App Store says there are.

Whatever the nomenclature, and whether you add a content blocker now or a "proper" extension later, you've got a new tool that sits in Safari and does nothing until you want it to.

With Safari on the Mac, for instance, you can have price comparison extensions, or ones that spot when you're being asked to enter a discount code. They can then find discount codes for you and enter them.

That's doubtlessly going to come to iOS because it's to do with shopping, and no developer of a shopping app is going to ignore a market of a billion iPhone users.

Add extensions via Settings, and then via installing apps that include them

How to stop or remove extensions

  • Go back to Settings , Safari , Extensions
  • Toggle the extension's setting to off, or
  • From the home screen, delete the app that provides the extension

You're not likely to have to do this often. Even if iOS 15 somehow gains as many extensions as, say, Chrome, this is also something you just set up once.

What extensions may come

Apple is doing its best to encourage developers to provide extensions for Safari in iOS 15 and beyond. So far there hasn't been a tidal wave, but iOS 15 extensions have been made to work as much like macOS ones as possible.

In theory, then, it should be easy for developers to add extension functionality, to lend functionality from their app to Safari. There are signs that many key developers are going to do this, but we'll still have to see how it's taken up once iOS 15 is officially out.

How To : Upgrade Safari on Your iPhone with These Powerful Add-Ons

Upgrade Safari on Your iPhone with These Powerful Add-Ons

You may use Safari on your iPhone or iPad to open links and browse the web, but there's so much more it can do for you. On updated software, you can implement third-party Safari extensions in your browser that go above and beyond content blocking, sharing, and performing basic actions.

Safari did have extensions before iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, but they were watered down compared to the extensions available on macOS. You could send a webpage to another app or open a new modal on top of the page in Safari, but more advanced integration was left out.

For example, with share and action extensions, you could open a page in a different browser, share it on social media, read it later in another app, translate it, find and select images to save, and so on. Content blocker extensions were the only ones that could directly impact a webpage's content in Safari.

The Safari extensions in iOS 15 and iOS 16 , as well as iPadOS 15 and iPadOS 16 , can do so much more, allowing you to better customize the way you use your browser. You could change the appearance or behavior of a webpage's content, add buttons directly to it, and more.

  • Don't Miss: The Ultimate Guide to Using Safari Extensions on Your iPhone for High-Octane Web Browsing

Viewing Safari Extensions on Your iPhone or iPad

To see what Safari extensions you already have on your iPhone or iPad, navigate to Settings –> Safari –> Extensions. Content blockers stick to the top, with web extensions right below them. Tap a web extension to read more about it, toggle it on or off, and change the "Ask," "Deny," and "Allow" privileges for some or all websites. (You can use and also manage extensions from Safari's page settings menu by tapping the "AA" icon in the URL bar.)

If you want to find more Safari extensions, tap "More Extensions" at the bottom of the "Extensions" menu in Safari's main settings. It will open up the extensions category in the App Store where you can browse and choose those that catch your interest. However, before you do that, check out our list below of the best free Safari extensions right now, which highlights some of the most useful the App Store has to offer.

Upgrade Safari on Your iPhone with These Powerful Add-Ons

Tip: Toggle on the "Share Across Devices" switch to automatically add the extensions you install in Safari on your iPhone or iPad to Safari on your other Apple devices. Your devices must be running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or macOS 13 Ventura to sync extensions.

App 1: Check Grammar as You Type

Grammarly is a must-have extension if you want to make sure everything you type in Safari looks professional. The free version checks your writing for grammar mistakes, spelling errors, correct punctuation usage, conciseness, and tone, and then it offers suggestions that you can apply or dismiss.

A premium version of Grammarly starting at $12 per month adds suggestions for spelling and punctuation consistency, fluency, clarity, formatting, engagement, confidence, plagiarism, and more. Unfortunately, none of those extra premium features are available in the Safari extension for iOS and iPadOS.

However, you can switch to the Grammarly keyboard to take advantage of those things in Safari and use the Safari extension when you only need basic editing help. The keyboard also works in any other app you type in, not just Safari.

App 2: Get the Best Deals, Coupons, and Cash Back

For those always looking for new ways to save money, earn cash back, and get coupons for your favorite stores, install Honey and let it do all the thinking. It works in the background, notifying you when a coupon code is available for the store you're shopping at in Safari, and all you have to do is activate the code.

Since October 2021 , Honey, which PayPal owns, has been offering cash back for select online shops in addition to coupons. Participating stores will offer a percentage back in Honey Gold, which you can redeem as cash to your PayPal account. You can also trade Gold points in for gift cards.

Similar coupon and cashback apps with Safari extensions include Rakuten , Capital One Shopping , and InvisibleHand .

App 3: Easily Invest Spare Change

The idea behind the Acorns service is that anyone can make micro-investments. It was designed for beginner investors, so it's simple and easy to use. You can invest money into your portfolio any time you want. Plus, you can make the service round up any payments you make with linked accounts to the nearest dollar, either automatically or manually, using the spare change for small investments that pile up with frequent use.

However, the Safari extension focuses on Acorns Earn, which invests extra money into your portfolio earned from shopping at participating shops online. It's similar to getting cash back with Honey or Rakuten, but Acorns automatically invests it into your portfolio. You can search for stores directly from the extension, but it will also prompt you to activate Earn when shopping on a participating site.

To use Acorns in any capacity, you need a subscription : the personal plan is $3 per month, while the family option is $5 per month. Also, Acorns states that you need to enable " Allow Apps to Request to Track " in your iOS privacy settings, and then allow Acorns when prompted. The extension also does not work on iPadOS at the moment.

App 4: Create, Enter, and Manage Passwords

If you're a LastPass user, you'll be happy to know that the Safari extension for iOS and iPadOS works much like it does on macOS. When you open a website with a login or signup page, you'll see the red and white LastPass icon in the username and password fields. Tap one to use the extension.

When you tap the icon when signing up or logging in to an account not saved in LastPass already, you'll see a box appear up top. You can tap "More options" to report a problem, generate a password, or open your vault. You can also tap the plus (+) to expand the entry and select a folder, disable autofill, etc. And adding a new entry to your vault couldn't be easier.

You can also tap the LastPass extension from Safari's page settings menu to open your vault to search your accounts, generate a password, view lock settings, and more.

LastPass is totally free to use if it's just for your iPhone or iPad, but if you want to sync passwords across all your devices, you'll need to pay $3 per month or $4 per month for a family subscription.

App 5: Make Your iPhone or iPad Read Any Text

Speechify is a powerful tool that will read any text you want. It frees you to multitask, listening to content instead of reading it while you do something else, like house chores, walking, or exercising.

After you listen to the demo, choose the voice you want, and find a good reading speed, the app will prompt you to enable the Safari extension and pay for the premium subscription for $139.99 per year. You need a subscription to use the Safari extension, but you can try out the premium features for three days before committing.

With the extension active, the Speechify controls will be overlayed on all the webpages you visit. You can move the controls around if they're in your way and disable them for specific sites. Hitting the play button starts the reading immediately, and you can change the voice and speed if desired. You can also bookmark the article to read later.

  • App Store Link: Speechify - Audio Text Reader (free, but a subscription is required)

If you only use Speechify occasionally in Safari, you might be better off saving your money and using Apple's more clunky "Speak Screen" tool .

App 6: Simplify Grocery Shopping

If you're looking for a way to share shopping lists with your family and make grocery shopping easier overall, Bring! Shopping List should definitely be on your iPhone or iPad. One of the first things you'll see when you install the app is an invitation form, so send it to someone that helps you grocery shop for your home. Other useful features include saving loyalty cards, discovering recipes, and customizing the lists with your own details.

The Safari extension lets you bookmark online recipes for later viewing or immediately add all the ingredients to your shopping list. Open Safari's page settings menu and tap "Transfer recipe" from your extensions list. Then, choose "Bookmark recipe" to save it to your collection or "Add ingredients to list" to add all or some of the products to a specific shopping list (it'll also add the recipe to your collection).

Best of all, Bring! is entirely free. A premium subscription for $1.99 per month or $12.99 annually removes advertisements and gives premium support, but it's not required.

App 7: Block All Unwanted Ads

There's an easy way to block all the annoying ads in Safari, and all you need is AdBlock Pro , one of the more impressive content blockers available.

Content blockers have been around on iOS and iPadOS since before the newer type of Safari extensions hit the scene, and they do exactly what it sounds like — blocks content on webpages. To enable AdBlock Pro, go to the "Extensions" menu in Safari's settings and toggle on the "Ads" option. Other options include Trackers, Social, Safety, Others, and Custom, all of which need a premium subscription to function, so you don't need to switch those on unless you subscribe.

If you've never used a content blocker before, it should be active for all websites you visit. If you have, you may need to go to Settings –> Safari –> Content Blockers to switch it on. You may also have to turn it on or off for specific websites or all other websites if you have per-site settings configured.

Upgrade Safari on Your iPhone with These Powerful Add-Ons

AdBlock Pro also has an extension you can turn on when viewing a YouTube video in Safari. When on a youtube.com video, open Safari's page settings menu and use the "AdBlock Pro" extension. Instructions will appear to show you how to block ads in YouTube videos, which the content blocker can't do on its own.

Ad blocking is free, and you can even adjust regional settings and add to your allowlist for sites you want to exclude from the restrictions. However, to get background updates, stop tracking scripts, block social buttons, block malware pages, and use other settings, you'll need a premium subscription, which runs $1.99 per month, $6.99 every six months, or $9.99 annually. You can also get free premium features by referring friends.

  • App Store Link: AdBlock Pro for Safari (free, offers in-app purchases)

Similar apps that feature a content blocker for Safari include Hyper Cleaner , Crystal Adblock , Firefox Focus , and PIA VPN .

App 8: Force Websites to Use Dark Mode

Apple's dark mode setting for iOS and iPadOS is pretty great, but not in Safari. Only the Safari interface is darkened, so none of the webpages you visit will follow suit automatically. But that's no longer an issue with Noir: Dark Mode . With Noir, your eyes can relax as you browse websites in dark mode when convenient.

Noir syncs with Apple's dark mode setting automatically for all websites, but you can also choose "Noir" from Safari's page settings menu when on a specific site to disable dark mode for it or make it dark even when your system-wide dark mode is off. You can also pick a different dark theme, set images to dim, or disable Noir until the next day.

Noir costs a flat $2.99 install, but you get lifetime access to it. If you can't afford to support the developer and future updates to the app, there's another app called Neo Noir that's free and has similar features.

  • App Store Link: Noir - Dark Mode for Safari ($2.99)

Similar apps with Safari dark mode extensions include PrettyWeb , Hyperweb , Dark Reader , and Turn Off the Lights .

App 9: Enjoy a Beautiful, Inspirational Start Page

Safari's start page is where you usually find your favorite websites and frequently visited pages, but you can make it look beautiful and inspirational with a custom background image. Apple introduced custom backgrounds for the start page in iOS and iPadOS 15 , and you can even sync them across all of your iCloud-connected devices.

To automate the process, you can use an app like Momentum . The app replaces Safari's own start page, so you won't be able to sync backgrounds with your other Apple devices, but that's a small price to pay for automatic start page wallpapers. When enabled, Momentum will show you a daily photo and a quote to inspire you when opening new tabs. You can also add a to-do list and set a daily focus to boost your productivity.

It's free to install and use. For $5.99 per month or $46.99 annually, you can get Momentum Plus options such as task syncing, adding your own photos, better task organization, countdowns to important dates, world clocks, and soundscapes.
