Like Safaris, Where the Water is the Road

This is wild geography. The coastline of British Columbia and Alaska undulates into bays, twists into archipelagos, and stretches far down fjords that slice through mountains. There are no roads. Coastal communities have deep connections to the ocean. Wildlife congregate in or near it due to the rich marine food web. To experience it all, a traveller must use the water as the road, as people have here for millennia.

One mighty nugget of scenery

For a state that only became part of the US of A in the late 50s, few places in North America have such an untouched, rugged presence as Alaska. Search for incredible wildlife in Denali National Park, hike to Exit Glacier outside of Seward, and try fresh salmon in coastal towns. Bears aren’t the only thing that’s big in this frontier – the scenic beauty is just as impressively large.

When to visit: Alaska is big, equal to one-fifth of the United States. Summer is the best time to visit unless you are travelling to view shimmering northern lights. The interior summer can reach up to 30 degrees. The Southern regions will average 13-21 degrees and it's always recommended to bring a rain coat and some warm clothes.

Anchorage is the perfect place to enjoy flightseeing trips by floatplane or a full day excursion to Prince William Sound. The region also offers ocean habitat for whales, porpoises, sea otters, sea lions and seals.

Denali National Park

Denali National Park is home to Alaska’s “Big Five”; bears, wolves, dall sheep, caribou and moose. This thriving landscape is backed by the dominating Mt Denali, one of the most amazing sights in Alaska.

Glacier Bay

Alaska’s classic beauty can be found exploring the Inside Passage. These splendid waterways begin in the dense forested coastlines of the Pacific Northwest and continue to Juneau, Skagway and Glacier Bay.

Small ship cruises

Small ships show you what other cruises cannot. Explore the inner reaches of Alaska’s amazing fjords, sail so close to glaciers you can almost touch them, and get up-close to the shoreline to experience the wildlife.

Arctic Circle

For many visitors, crossing the Arctic Circle is a memorable moment. The Inupiat town of Barrow is home to one of the largest Eskimo communities. This far north, the sun doesn’t set for 82 days, shining from around May 10th to August 2nd.

Northern Lights

People come from around the world to view Alaska’s northern lights, the ‘Aurora Borealis’. One of nature’s most inspiring sights, the northern lights appear most often on cold, clear nights from late September through April.

Ketchikan, Alaska  [ Ship ]

As the “Salmon Capital of the World”, this port of call harvests a collection of personalities, all yearning for the refreshing taste of salmon varieties.  Meanwhile, grizzly bears meander through the shallow waters in search of their next meal. Past the multi-colored homes lining the tranquil shores lies an emblem of Ketchikan’s antiquities — Totem Bight State Historical Park. Down on Creek Street, dollhouse-style homes line the wooden boardwalk inviting visitors to explore what’s left of the city’s red-light district days. With all that remains in this lively port of call, it’s no wonder why Ketchikan is one of the most sought-after destinations in Alaska.

Juneau, Alaska  [ Ship ]

Stop in the quaint town of Juneau, the capital of Alaska, and enjoy cruising past the stunning Dawes Glacier.

Rolling mountains — standing over 3,000 feet tall — overlook the still waters below, waiting for the majestic 20-foot Orcas to break the tranquil surface and make their grand debut. Meanwhile, the sweeping, 12-mile long Mendenhall Glacier rests nearby, slowly retreating under the steadfast sun. Nothing about Juneau is small. From the gaping landscapes to the dignified wildlife, there’s more than meets the eye in this unique port of call. Home to some of the largest gold mines in the world, Juneau has experienced its fair share of movement and continues to do so as the emblematic capital of Alaska. Relish in panoramic views of these precious lands atop Mount Roberts or immerse yourself in it all as you zipline through breathtaking elevations, dogsled along a trail and hike across serene meadows.

Skagway, Alaska  [ Ship ]

With less than 1,000 residents, Skagway boasts small-town charm with big-city riches. Offering the shortest route to the Klondike, this port of call was a popular choice among gold-rushers. But, many travelers overlooked the real treasures of Skagway — the rustic Victorian architecture, the winding wooden railways and violet-spotted fields beneath the snow-capped mountains. Journey to these awe-inspiring landmarks — like the Klondike Summit — by seaplane or the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway. Or, retrace the steps of early settlers atop a majestic horse companion. Travel through vivid rainforests, emerald fields and the iconic Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Experience the state’s most prized possessions when you sail into this Alaska port of call.

Victoria, British Columbia  [ Ship ]

With pristine gardens sprinkled throughout the city, this vibrant port of call is every bit inviting and inspiring. Butchart Gardens — a 55-foot floral wonderland — boasts alluring walkways, enchanting stairways, glowing waterfalls and floral canopies dotted into vibrant blossoms. It’s no wonder why this fairytale haven is the most popular attraction in this charming port of call. Horse-drawn carriages carry visitors past charming houses and stately buildings that overlook the reflective waters. Meanwhile, patterned butterflies flutter throughout their very own 12,000 square-foot tropical paradise — home to symphonic birds and serene koi ponds. To experience true royalty, visit Craigdarroch Castle where wooden antiques and furnishings line the Victorian-style halls. No matter what you choose to do, your time in this Alaska cruise port will be nothing short of colorful.

Discover these true wanderlust destinations with Distant Journeys on our 14-day Grand Canadian Rockies or our 21-day Grand Canadian Rockies & Alaskan Cruise . Spot whales in Victoria and cruise the wilderness of Alaska’s Inside Passage on board Holland America Line’s ‘Pinnacle Class’ ship, the Koningsdam .

Alaska’s Inside Passage is considered one of the greatest routes to explore, this protected network of waterways offers plenty of opportunities to spot some of Alaska’s most iconic wildlife from our prime position on deck – humpback whales and orcas play in the bountiful waters; bald eagles soar overhead and brown bears are scattered along the shoreline. Ports of call include Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, with visits to Glacier Bay and Tracy Arm Inlet, all whilst enjoying impeccable hospitality, dining and entertainment perfectly honed over Holland America’s 150-year cruising history.

Other highlights include a stay at the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and a drive out onto the Athabasca Glacier, all with excitement and ease when you tour with Distant Journeys. Along the way, you’ll be guided by experienced Tour, Train and Cruise Managers. A highly experienced Tour Manager is an absolute must on any escorted tour, playing several roles to ensure we deliver a successful tour; a leader who works tirelessly to ensure everything runs smoothly, a ‘destination expert’, happy to share their local knowledge, recommendations and advice, and a friendly, resourceful presence always on hand to help. Distant Journeys’ Tour Managers are all personally selected to ensure they are the best in the business. Their enthusiasm is unfeigned; they love nothing more than to share their country with our guests.

When travelling on the Rocky Mountaineer, your hosts are dedicated to making your onboard experience as memorable as the scenery outside, from refreshing your wine glass to sharing stories and helping out with special requests. Should you be travelling to Alaska, Holland America’s crew will be there to take care of your every need.

  • BackPacker425801 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Winter Wonderland Yukon As a solo traveler, I am very careful of booking excursions. I don’t like large 50-75 passenger buses tours as they are hard to be personal and intimate. I came to Skagway on the last cruise of the season and I’m glad I did booked an excursion with Skagway Tours. Mike was our tour guide and gave me one of the best tours I’ve had in my life. Honestly he’s in the wrong profession!! He takes amazing photos! I’ve attached one below. He allowed me to memorialize this trip through photos with me in the scenery. Since I travel alone, that’s hard to do without a good selfie game. He took us to all the great photo spots and made great “non-dad” jokes. He talked about growing up and living in Skagway which is always a plus. His experience living in the places we were touring made me want to move asap! I highly recommend this company and the Winter Wonderland Yukon tour. The tour was mid size, 30 or so people, the bus was heated, and the bus very comfortable. Read more Written October 28, 2023

The 11 Best Alaska Cruise Excursions in 2024

T he best Alaska cruise excursions can range from the thrilling to the serene. All these activities are planned for you as part of the cruise itinerary—as a way for travelers to sample the diverse wonders of The Last Frontier in one fell swoop.

Wildlife sightings may be the more popular Alaska cruise shore excursions, but travelers shouldn't overlook incredible opportunities to learn about the state’s Indigenous cultures , as well as culinary experiences centered around local delicacies such as fresh salmon, halibut, berries, and craft beer.
