Cheap Caribbean Cruises - Cruises to Caribbean

Featured caribbean cruise deals, cruising guide, why cruise to the caribbean.

Thousands of islands make up the Caribbean, a tropical region stretching across the Atlantic Ocean. Home to some of the most popular cruise ports in the world, the Caribbean offers variations on a theme: sun, white-sand beaches and fun with a local twist, depending on the port. From Dutch and French isles to U.S. territories, the destinations of the Caribbean have cultural experiences to spare that extend well beyond the tip of the umbrella in your fruity cocktail.

A cruise offers the chance to visit multiple islands within the span of a few days, providing visitors with a sampler of new places plus balmy sea breezes along the way. Caribbean cruises offer endless variety giving vacationers the chance to get away for a long weekend or two weeks. With so many departure ports, your ship to the Caribbean might be a short flight or even a drive away.

What are Popular Activities in the Caribbean?

The Caribbean offers as much -- or as little – as you want to do during your time ashore, making it an ideal cruise vacation for families or for couples.

Water sports are abundant in the Caribbean and anyone who likes spending time in the sea will enjoy snorkeling, diving, paddleboarding and swimming through clear, turquoise waters like the remote beaches of Bonaire. Or fly high through the sky on a number of active zipline courses, including the steepest zipline in the world in St. Maarten. Lazily lounging on the beach is almost always a fantastic option. Pair a beach day with a hike on a day trip from St. Thomas to Virgin Island National Park in St. John.

If you need a break from the sun, air-conditioned island tours, duty-free shopping trips and even scenic rail trips -- such as the one around St. Kitts -- provide wonderful ways to spend a day off the ship.

All-inclusive lovers will be able to pamper themselves with excursions to resorts, while those looking for a more local flavor will be able to learn from chefs, artisans and other experts for an authentic taste of each island's culture

When is a Good Time to Cruise to the Caribbean?

Winter and spring are great seasons to travel to the Caribbean due to a slight reduction in crowds and moderate temperatures, though the warm weather holds year-round here.

Atlantic hurricane season, from June through October, means a higher chance of rain and possible storms, though summer is still one of the most popular times to visit the Caribbean. If you book a summer sailing in a Caribbean region within the hurricane zone, there's a chance nothing will happen -- but buying insurance and keeping a flexible schedule helps manage expectations.

What are Popular Ports in the Caribbean?

Cozumel, St. Thomas, Grand Cayman and St. Martin/Maarten are some of the most common ports of call in the Caribbean. You could also experience Jamaica, Cuba, Aruba, Grand Turk or the Dominican Republic. Many Caribbean cruises also include stops at private islands, such as Royal Caribbean's CocoCay or Disney's Castaway Cay, located in The Bahamas.

Where do Caribbean cruises depart from?

Caribbean cruises depart from ports around the U.S., including San Juan, Puerto Rico. Many of the top Caribbean cruise departure ports are located in Florida: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando.

Elsewhere on the East Coast and Gulf Coast, Caribbean sailings depart from Baltimore, Manhattan, Galveston, New Orleans, Mobile and more. Caribbean islands and itinerary lengths will vary, depending on where you sail from and where you're sailing to.

What are Popular Regions of the Caribbean?

Choose from Eastern, Western or Southern Caribbean itineraries. You’ll primarily find the U.S. Virgin Islands -- St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John -- on Eastern Caribbean sailings, as well as St. Maarten/Martin and the Dominican Republic. The ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao) are featured on Southern Caribbean cruises. Western Caribbean cruises often include ports in Mexico and Jamaica, along with Belize and Grand Turk.

Lengths also vary -- Western Caribbean itineraries can be limited to just a few days for those who want a quick getaway or don't have time for longer sailings. Southern Caribbean sailings tend to last at least 10 nights, and these often depart from San Juan. Eastern Caribbean sailings are typically a week long.

What are Tips to Find Cruise deals to the Caribbean?

Here are our best tips for finding a cheap cruise or cruise deal to the Caribbean. If you book a “guaranteed cabin” (they select for you), a cabin on a lower deck or sail on an older ship from a brand you like, then you can get the best price for a specific cruise to the Caribbean. Last minute cruises deals to the Caribbean appear as you get closer to the sail date, usually 1-2 weeks in advance. Taking a cruise to the Caribbean in the shoulder season (before or after the peak season) can also be a great way to find a cruise deal.

Celebrity offers a wide range of cruises all over the Caribbean, from  three-night getaways  to 12-night voyages. Relax and rejuvenate in The Bahamas and CocoCay, or over a week visiting Mexico and Grand Cayman, or San Juan, the British Virgin Islands, and St. Kitts. On our longer Caribbean itineraries, we visit the Southern Caribbean, Central America, and South America, crossing the Panama Canal.

Can I cruise during hurricane season?

Yes! Celebrity’s ships sail, between June and November, which is regarded as hurricane season.

Only a very small portion of cruises that sail to the Caribbean during a storm season are actually affected by these storms. Though you may encounter slightly rougher water on a cruise during hurricane season, there are many systems in place to detect any hurricane weather along your cruise route, ensuring your ship’s captain and crew will be able to chart a path around any bad weather or make modifications to the itinerary to keep you safe. Celebrity’s state-of-the-art ships are built for stability, keeping movement in rough seas to a minimum.

See our blog post about  cruising during hurricane season.

Where are the best beaches in the Caribbean?

Every island in the Caribbean has beautiful beaches, from rocky coves to long sweeps of white sand lined with umbrellas and buzzing beach bars. Naming the  Caribbean's best beaches  is a purely subjective topic, as everybody has their favorite. Some of the most famous, though, include Grand Cayman’s gorgeous Seven Mile Beach, and the dazzling white sand of Eagle Beach on Aruba. Dickenson Beach in Antigua is a picturesque paradise, while Crane Beach on Barbados boasts pale pink sand.

Honeymoon Beach on St. John is home to one of the most romantic settings in the Caribbean, while The Baths on Virgin Gorda is a day full of adventure, where you can hike through caves that lead you straight down to secret rock pools. Rent an overwater cabana for the day at  the Coco Beach Club on CocoCay in the Bahamas, or relax with a cocktail in hand on this natural coral island at any of the island's white sandy beaches. Deciding which beach is your personal favorite is all part of the fun.

What can I do besides go to the beach?

The Caribbean has a rich culture that extends beyond beach life. Explore colorful streets and colonial-era forts in Old San Juan, and ride the St. Kitts Scenic Railway across verdant countryside with beautiful ocean views. Take a day off from sunbathing and join a horseback riding tour along St. Maarten’s stunning coastline. Explore Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua or climb the Pitons in St. Lucia, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Join a gourmet walking tour of Charlotte Amalie in the U.S. Virgin Islands to learn about its culinary culture, or stroll through the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park on Grand Cayman. Learn about spice cultivation in Grenada or join a nature walk in Barbados. It doesn’t matter how many times you visit the Caribbean—you will never run out of things to do.

Do I need a passport to cruise to the Caribbean?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information  here .

Not all Caribbean cruises require a passport. If you are an American citizen traveling from the U.S. to the Bahamas or Mexico on a closed-loop cruise, starting and ending at the same U.S. port, a state-issued ID and an original U.S. birth certificate is sufficient.

On other Caribbean cruises, you can enter with your U.S. passport book, passport card, Trusted Traveler card (Nexus, SENTRI, or FAST), or an enhanced driver’s license. See our  blog post  for more information.

When’s the best time to cruise?

You can now cruise the Caribbean year round on one of our newest Edge series ships, Celebrity Beyond, starting in 2024. The Caribbean is a cruiser’s dream vacation in every season, but the best time to cruise the Caribbean can depend on your schedule, your travel budget and your travel desires. Discover the  best times to cruise the Caribbean  on our blog.

Where do Caribbean cruises depart from?

Celebrity’s Caribbean cruises depart from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, Port Canaveral and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

What should I pack for a Caribean Cruise?

When  packing for a cruise to the Caribbean , you’ll need clothing for a warm, sometimes humid climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes if you’re visiting coral beaches, and reef-friendly sunblock.

If you book a snorkeling excursion, all gear will be provided, but where there are places that you may want to snorkel independently, consider bringing your own equipment.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Is it easy to get around the Caribbean islands?

The easiest way to get around each island is to  book a shore excursion .

What language is spoken in the Caribbean?

English is the main language spoken in the Caribbean. However, there are many other languages spoken within the region. On the ABC Islands and St. Maarten (on the Dutch side), Dutch is the official language, but locals also speak Papamiento, a hybrid of Dutch, Spanish, and various West African languages. In the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, it’s Spanish. On the French side of St. Maarten/St. Martin, it’s French. Across the Caribbean, you’ll hear Creole spoken, or patois, which varies from island to island.

25 Caribbean Cruises for Your Next Tropical Vacation

These Caribbean cruises are perfect for all types of travelers.

caribbean cruise trip

The Caribbean islands are among the most popular cruise destinations in the world. Ships from ocean liners and yachts to small expedition vessels and sailboats carry cruisers who enjoy the time at sea as well as the islands' beauty, colorful marine life, and tropical weather.

Historic towns, ancient ruins, modern cities, secluded beaches, delicious food, and friendly locals offer something for everyone. The diverse languages and cultures add to the fascination with the Caribbean, and cruises that visit a series of destinations highlight the distinctions among the islands.

Caribbean cruises depart from many port cities, so for some travelers, a few days in a new place before or after the cruise adds to the experience. Cruises can be family-focused or adults-only, and many accommodate all ages with activities to keep everyone happy. Whether you're looking for a quick getaway or an extended vacation, a cruise can fit into your plans. Here are some of the best Caribbean cruises to inspire your island vacation.

Cruise to Caribbean

Why should i go on a cruise to the caribbean.

With a variety of destinations to choose from like a cruise to Labadee, Haiti, cruises to Jamaica, cruises to Puerto Rico and cruises to the Bahamas, a cruise to the Caribbean is a fantastic way to experience the unique culture and history of each place. With easy access from the United States, you can book a 5 or 7-day cruise from Florida. The Caribbean is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters and lush vegetation, making it a great place for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. Royal Caribbean offers Caribbean cruises from ports such as Miami and Fort Lauderdale and also offers an exclusive experience of "Perfect Day at CocoCay" an exclusive island destination, where you can enjoy the beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and many activities.

How can I find cheap cruises to the Caribbean?

The best way to find cheap cruises to the Caribbean is to sort your search results by price, which will put the most affordable options at the top of the list. You can also easily spot discounted cruises in the Expedia search results by looking for green text above the price. Keep in mind that it's generally easier to find cheaper options when you have flexible dates and can book in advance. If you’re flexible with the length of your cruise, you can find 3-day or 7-day cruise deals. Booking ahead for your Caribbean cruise in March 2024 is a good way to find overall cheaper prices for your cruise to the Caribbean, whether it's a western Caribbean cruise, an eastern Caribbean cruise, or even a Turks and Caicos cruise.

What are the best cruise lines to the Caribbean?

Quite a few cruise lines to the Caribbean are available including the world-famous Royal Caribbean , in addition to MSC and Carnival . You can filter your search results by cruise lines to ensure that you're only seeing the cruise lines you're interested in. For your festive Caribbean cruise in December 2024, be sure to check out Royal Caribbean's Labadee, Haiti, or a Carnival Barbados cruise. Some of the best ships voyage in the Caribbean each year, such as the Symphony of the Seas , the Carnival Sunrise cruise ship, or the International Oasis of the Seas . Each Caribbean cruise line offers different amenities, activities, and specialties, so be sure to read the fine print.

How do I find Caribbean cruise deals?

To find deals on cruise tickets to the Caribbean, keep an eye out for available discounts in your Expedia search results marked by green text above the estimated price. As you sort through your results, be aware that least expensive does not always mean best value. A 5-day Caribbean cruise may offer a wealth of experiences that a 2- or 3-day Caribbean cruise cannot match, especially when factoring in cruising time from your port of departure. Consider whether you want a 7-day cruise from Florida or a 3-day all-inclusive cruise to Jamaica. Booking well in advance is always a good way to find better deals, so start planning your 2025 Caribbean cruise today.

What should I look out for when booking a Caribbean cruise vacation?

Cruises are divided between western Caribbean cruises, cruises to the eastern Caribbean, and southern Caribbean cruises, with some ships like the Carnival Cruise Horizon plying the seas between multiple regions. Are you interested in a 3-day cruise to Jamaica? Or a 5-day cruise from Florida in 2024 to discover more? Some longer cruises may visit 2 regions, but most tend to restrict themselves to 1, and you need to make sure it's the one you'd like to visit the most. The Caribbean Sea includes more than 700 islands spread over more than a million square miles, so one of the most important factors to keep in mind when booking a cruise to the Caribbean is which region of the Caribbean you want to visit.

What are the best Caribbean cruise destinations?

The Caribbean Sea is home to a multitude of iconic cruise destinations from Puerto Rico to Barbados, and some of the best include Haiti, Jamaica, and the Bahamas . A Western Caribbean cruise will take you to the white sand beaches of Mexico and Jamaica, while traveling to the Eastern Caribbean will put you closer to the open seas around the Bahamas and Puerto Rico. Good ships for these locations are the International Allure of the Seas by Royal Caribbean or the MSC Seashore . A Southern Caribbean cruise, meanwhile, can get you to Aruba and Grenada, where you can experience their vibrant local culture and delicious island cuisine. Whether you’re looking for a Caribbean cruise in December 2024 or a Caribbean cruise in March 2024, you have plenty of options.

When is the best time for a Caribbean cruise vacation?

While cruises that go to the Caribbean are available all year long, the most popular time to travel tends to be from December to April when the skies are clear and the weather is comfortable. You can already book your Caribbean cruise in December 2024. Some cruises are timed to fit with holidays like Mardi Gras, such as the Carnival ’s Mardi Gras deals. This means that the rest of the year tends to be more affordable but comes with a chance of rain. Regardless of when you travel, the Caribbean has an optimal climate and temperatures are typically going to stay close to 80 degrees.

How long does it take to go on a cruise trip to the Caribbean?

The length of a boat cruise to the Caribbean varies depending on which port you depart from, but it generally takes just a day or 2 to reach your first destination. If you’re interested in a 4-day cruise from Florida, consider a Royal Caribbean cruise from Miami or a cruise to Cozumel from Port Canaveral . You'll be at sea just for a day before reaching your first destination. Depending on the number of stops, however, you could easily book a 7-day 2024 Caribbean cruise or longer. Given its proximity to Florida, you can also find 3-day Caribbean cruises from California, such as from San Diego, or even a weekend cruise to the Bahamas.

Can I book a luxury cruise to the Caribbean?

Luxury cruises to the Caribbean are readily available from a variety of cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Celebrity . On Celebrity's Reflection ship , travelers can enjoy European-style butler service in addition to an intimate lounge, an outdoor hub with real grass, a luxurious spa, and sophisticated dining options that include refined Caribbean cuisine and international choices. Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas , in contrast, offers a Vegas-style casino, a games room with self-leveling pool tables, and a cinema. Whether you’re considering a 5-day cruise or 7-day cruise in 2024, truly, in the Caribbean Sea more than almost anywhere else, the world is your oyster.

Are there all-inclusive cruises to the Caribbean?

"Some of the best options for all-inclusive cruises to the Caribbean come from cruise lines like Carnival and MSC , you could consider a 3-day all-inclusive cruise in 2024 or a longer journey. All-inclusive cruises to the Caribbean let you book everything in advance from your room to the food and entertainment, allowing you to relax and just enjoy yourself on the ship. The Carnival Conquest ship , for example, lets you book not only a comfortable suite, but also meals at a variety of on-board restaurants with fine dining options and good old-fashioned barbecue available in equal measure–all arranged and taken care of for you ahead of time."

Can I get a family cruise to the Caribbean?

Family cruises to the Caribbean are popular, especially with cruise lines like Disney and Princess . A family cruise can be a way to take the family on a vacation and let the kids roam free, knowing they're safe in the supervised environment of the cruise ship. If the timing is better for your family, consider a shorter 5-day cruise. Longer 7-day Caribbean cruises are also a great option to make new memories. Take the Disney Fantasy , for example, which offers fun for kids and adults alike thanks to iconic character greetings, Star Wars-themed stage shows, and even an on-board water coaster.

Is there an adult cruise to the Caribbean?

An adult cruise to the Caribbean is one where you can enjoy some peace and quiet, or party the night away at famous adult-themed beaches and vibrant beachside nightlife in Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic. Several cruise lines offer adults-only sections or even entire cruises completely without children, including Norwegian and Celebrity . On the Celebrity Summit , adults can enjoy luxurious accommodation, delicious wine tastings, and a recently redesigned spa area. Book a 7-day Caribbean cruise to make the most of your trip.

What are Caribbean honeymoon cruises like?

A Caribbean honeymoon cruise, like what you'd find with Celebrity or Royal Caribbean , offers you and your partner a wide variety of things to do with romantic dining options and scenic views so you can make memories for a lifetime. 7-day cruises from Florida offer a convenient departure point. On the Celebrity Silhouette , for example, you'll find a unique restaurant that lets you order from your iPad and another that offers fresh seafood prepared by renowned chefs. Those looking to party the night away with the love of their life might choose to honeymoon on Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas , complete with games, nightclubs, and cocktail bars.

How do I book a cruise to the Caribbean on Expedia?

The best way to find a cruise that goes to the Caribbean on Expedia is by using the available search filters to narrow down your results from the vast inventory of options available, from cabin type to departure ports, such as a 4-day cruise from Florida and even specific cruise ships. Get an idea of the amenities you want and filter your results to fit your expectations. Be sure to take advantage of the sorting function, which lets you find the ultimate maritime getaway based on departure date, duration, or price. Don't forget to keep an eye out for the green discount indicators on certain search results too–you may be able to save some money.

Can I get last-minute cruise deals to the Caribbean?

Keep an eye out for special deals on last-minute cruise deals to the Caribbean by sorting your results by price and looking for the green discount indicators or choosing one of our pre-selected offers. Consider booking your 2024 Caribbean cruise in advance. Many of these last-minute deals become available shortly before departure as cruise lines seek to fill their few remaining vacancies.

Do I need a passport for a cruise trip to the Caribbean?

You won't necessarily need a passport if you book a closed-loop cruise to the Caribbean. A closed-loop cruise to the Caribbean from the United States returns to the same US port from which it departs, for instance, a 5-day cruise from Florida. These cruises allow you to visit different countries without a passport. Still, it's recommended to have one in case something unexpected happens. If you're an American Citizen, visiting United States destinations in the Caribbean like Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands will never require a passport.

Can I cancel a cruise to the Caribbean?

You can cancel your Caribbean cruise from the My Trips page on your Expedia account or through customer service, in case you change your mind about your booking. Remember that the refund you get back is generally dependent on how far in advance you cancel. It's important to do your research before you cancel: every cruise line has its own cancellation policy, and you may be subject to a cancellation fee or a partial refund.

Why should I book a cruise to the Caribbean with Expedia?

Booking a Caribbean cruise in 2024 with Expedia is easy thanks to the vast array of options and convenient search filters. Best Caribbean cruise tips to help you make the most of your time aboard and ashore

Veronica Stoddart

Ah, the Caribbean — land of endless sun, sand and sea. But the region is so much more than this intoxicating siren song. With 700 islands, islets and cays and a heady variety of cultures, it offers as many experiences and activities as flowers in a tropical garden.

A Caribbean cruise is a great way to dip your toes into these bathtub-warm waters, especially for first-time cruisers interested in short three- or four-night cruises. Standard itineraries typically range from five to 15 nights, depending on the destinations. A cruise is also the best way to island hop and sample multiple destinations on one trip (bucket list, anyone?).

But with so many choices, it's best to be prepared so you make the most of your time aboard and ashore. Here are some insider tips to guide you.

caribbean cruise trip

Prepare yourself for the tropical climate

Despite a tropical climate all year round, the Caribbean does have slight seasonal changes. The best time to cruise to the Caribbean is during the drier, cooler months of November to May, when the temperatures are in the comfortable 70s and low 80s.

From May through October, highs can reach the 90s, though those famous trade winds blow all year round. Scattered downpours — known locally as "liquid sunshine" — are common during the wetter months of July to November, but they pass quickly.

When the heat is intense, make sure to stay well hydrated. If you're particularly sensitive to heat, choose Caribbean cruise excursions that avoid it such as an air-conditioned bus tour, an indoor shopping foray or experiences in the water.

Beware of hurricane season

Hurricane season in the Caribbean runs from June through November, with the majority of storms occurring in August and September. If you're concerned about cancellations, skipped ports or rough weather, avoid the peak hurricane months. On the flip side, you can often score some discounted pricing, which is common at this time of year.

While hurricane prediction is not an exact science, modern storm tracking usually allows ships to re-route to avoid bad weather. You may still run into rougher-than-usual waters, but it's rare for a cruise to be canceled entirely.

In the process of dodging a storm, however, your cruise may skip some port calls. You'll need to be flexible about unexpected itinerary changes. When that happens, cruise lines sometimes compensate passengers with complimentary or discounted services on board.

If you do book a Caribbean cruise during hurricane season, consider buying travel insurance in case a storm disrupts your trip. If you book any shore excursions with a third party, make sure the company offers a refund if your ship misses the port.

Finally, if you want to avoid hurricanes altogether, look at cruises that sail to the southernmost islands outside the "hurricane belt." They include Aruba, Barbados, Bonaire, Curacao, Trinidad and Tobago.

Make sure you bring reef-safe sunscreen

The Caribbean sun is intense. The closer you get to the equator, the greater your UV radiation exposure will be, even in December and January. During the summer months of June and July, your skin can burn in as little as 10 minutes. Be sure to pack plenty of reef-safe sunscreen and reapply it liberally, especially after swimming.

Studies have shown that ingredients found in some sunscreens, such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, can harm coral reefs, especially in popular tourism areas such as the Caribbean. To help protect the delicate reefs while you're in the water, avoid products with those chemicals. Instead, use sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are considered safe around coral reefs.

Choose the right Caribbean region for your cruise

The Caribbean is divided into three main cruise regions: Eastern, Western and Southern. While all three have some similar features, each group of islands has its own characteristics.

The Western Caribbean consists of Grand Cayman and Jamaica, as well as ports in Mexico (Cozumel, Costa Maya) and Central America (Belize City, Roatan). This Caribbean cruise region is ideal for those who want to visit fewer ports and are especially interested in Mayan culture and diving.

The Eastern Caribbean encompasses the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix), the British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda), St. Maarten/St. Martin, St. Barts, St. Kitts, Nevis, Antigua and Guadeloupe. It's great for shopping enthusiasts and beach connoisseurs.

The Southern Caribbean includes Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada and Trinidad. Less visited than the more-accessible northerly regions, the Southern Caribbean is for those who can take longer cruises and want to experience new ports of call.

Pick a ship with lots of pools and alfresco restaurants

Enjoying the tropical climate, especially during the harsh North American winter, is what a Caribbean cruise is all about. To increase your opportunities of doing that on board, choose a cruise ship with multiple pools and alfresco eateries to maximize your time outdoors. More options may help you find an empty poolside lounge and avoid waiting for an outdoor meal.

Book a balcony cabin for private time under the sun

Sometimes you just want to enjoy the tropical sun in private. In that case, there's nothing like sitting on your own balcony , away from the ship's poolside crowds and packed outdoor lounge areas. It's also magical for watching the sun slip into the horizon with nobody else around.

Find an intimate beach

Pocket beaches and intimate coves are among the prized secrets of the Caribbean. While most passengers beeline for the popular show-off strands, seek out a less-visited stretch of sand for a more intimate experience. Ask a local for a recommendation and take a taxi or ride-hailing service there. Who knows — you may even have a gorgeous little spot all to yourself.

Get out in nature

Yes, you'll want to bask on a beautiful beach, fringed with swaying palms and Windex-blue waters. But don't forgo the Caribbean's other natural attractions: jungle-swathed volcanoes and lush rainforests, gushing waterfalls and mangrove reserves, bioluminescent bays and rugged deserts with sand dunes.

You can hike along a wooded trail deep in the rainforest. Visit a botanical garden or nature preserve, teeming with exotic plants and flowers. Climb a volcanic mountain. Watch whales or birds. Bathe in a gushing cascade. Kayak in a lagoon. Explore a cave laced with stalactites and stalagmites. Go ATV off-roading or ziplining high above the forest canopy. Or take the ocean plunge with watersports from snorkeling and diving to sailing and jet skiing.

Delve into island culture and heritage

When you're ready to skip the beach and the Crayola-colored landscape, consider some cultural enrichment. The islands boast fascinating plantation great houses, forts, museums and historic neighborhoods, which include 16 UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites spread across nine islands. Many are the legacy of the colonial powers that once ruled these parts.

For insights into the area's colonial past, visit centuries-old plantation houses on Barbados and Jamaica or the massive stone fortresses at La Fortaleza in San Juan, Puerto Rico, or Brimstone Hill on St. Kitts. Wander the narrow cobblestone streets of Old San Juan or colonial Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, the oldest city in the New World. Admire the 17th-century Dutch architecture of Willemstad, Curacao. You can even check out the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton in a Georgian house on tiny Nevis.

Meanwhile, excellent museums in the Bahamas, Bermuda, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Trinidad display contemporary art by local artists.

Eat and drink local

There's no greater entree into the culture than food. Caribbean cuisine is a tantalizing, multifaceted stew of the many peoples and traditions that have shaped the region: indigenous, West African, Spanish, French, British, Dutch and East Indian.

The result is a mouthwatering gastronomy bursting with flavor as intense as the tropical sun. Tempt your taste buds with mouth-searing hot sauces, aromatic marinades and fiery spice rubs. Or sample a cornucopia of exotic tropical ingredients — ackee, breadfruit, carambola, Caribbean yams, cassava, guava, pigeon peas and plantain — in restaurants, food shacks and colorful markets on every island.

During port visits, be sure to taste the local dishes, such as ubiquitous dried and salted cod in everything from Jamaican ackee and saltfish to Barbadian codfish cakes to cod fritters, called accras de morue in the French West Indies and bacalaitos in Puerto Rico. Try jerk chicken in Jamaica, conch fritters in the Bahamas and rice and peas flavored with unsweetened coconut milk most anywhere.

Sample Creole specialties in the French islands, such as boudin noir (blood sausage) and crabes farcis (stuffed crabs). Tuck into chicken or goat curry, India's popular contribution to menus regionwide, and feast on Caribbean spiny lobster, freshly grilled seaside.

Wash down your meals with the Caribbean's quintessential drink: rum. Or better still, go rum tasting in distilleries with their own signature brands in the Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, Martinique, Puerto Rico and St. Maarten.

Go during a festival

West Indians know how to party, and they let loose at festivals throughout the year that showcase their vibrant traditions and culture. Almost every island hosts an annual event to celebrate its heritage with music, dance, food or sailing, often in the form of an exuberant pre-Lent carnival. Consider yourself lucky if you can plan your visit to coincide with one of these lively events.

Here are some of the most important fetes:

  • Trinidad and Tobago Carnival: The oldest, biggest and boldest carnival in the Caribbean with elaborate floats and costumes. Two days before Ash Wednesday.
  • Cayman Pirate Week, Cayman Islands: A family-friendly event with parades, fireworks, street dances and costume contests. In November.
  • Antigua Sailing Week: One of the world's most prestigious yacht racing events. In April.
  • Bahamas' Junkanoo, Nassau: A carnival-type celebration with parades and costumed revelers. Between Boxing Day (Dec. 26) and New Year's Eve. In addition to the main event after Christmas, the festival is also celebrated on Independence Day (July 10), every Saturday in August and with other small holidays throughout the year.
  • Crop Over Festival, Barbados: A celebration of the end of the sugarcane harvest with parties, parades, live music, street vendors and food trucks. July to August.
  • St. Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival: A showcase for jazz, R&B and calypso music, plus dance, theater and art by local and international artists, along with daytime Carnival-style street parties. In May.

  • 11-day southern Caribbean itineraries with a port of call in Cartegena, Colombia
  • Three top-notch complimentary main dining rooms
  • Eden, the live entertainment venue that's home to more than 5,000 live plants
  • The spa's SEA Thermal Suite is the apex of relaxation
  • Lack of outdoor activities like waterslides and rides for families
  • The theatrical stage shows sometimes disappoint

Princess cruises.

If you're of a certain vintage that fondly recalls the TV show  The Love Boat , then Princess Cruises is the best Caribbean cruise for you! It was a Princess ship featured in that classic show, and they still call it The Love Boat, so nostalgic seniors will think that Princess Cruise Line ships are the bee's knees! But Princess is one of the best Caribbean cruise options because the ships have a retro elegance about them, an old-fashioned level of class with shiny brass decorative elements, elaborate chandeliers, familiar tasty food, upscale wine tastings, cultural enrichment programs, Deal or No Deal games on the main stage, Broadway-style entertainment, and The Love Boat Piazza Party on one of your formal nights.

Additionally, seniors will enjoy knowing that on every Princess ship cruising the Caribbean, there are many ADA cabins with full wheelchair-turning space, roll-in showers with grab bars and a fold-down bench seat, as well as closets and desks that are both cleverly designed and highly accessible. Princess Cruises also offers one of the best Alaska cruise itineraries.

  • Numerous ADA-accessible staterooms across all cabin types (from suites to interior rooms)
  • Old-school elegance
  • May feel too old-timey for some travelers

  • "Treasure Island" itinerary visits a host of small, intriguing Caribbean islands that you won't get to experience on the bigger cruise ships
  • Pirates don't mind the rough seas on a sailboat, but you might on a Star Clippers cruise
  • Pirates also don't need a lot of entertainment options on board, so don't expect Broadway productions on these ships

What to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise

Sharing is caring!

If you’re planning a Caribbean cruise in 2024, you’re probably wondering what to pack for your cruise vacation. You’ll want to be prepared for fun sea days , beautiful days in port and elegant evenings on the cruise ship.

Knowing what to wear and what outfits to pack , as well as what must-have items to bring on your Caribbean Cruise is essential. I’ve also included a free printable cruise packing list, which you can print and personalize.

What to Bring on a Caribbean Cruise

what to pack for a Caribbean cruise

Some people will counsel you to pack light on a cruise , and while you don’t want to overpack, you need to know that it isn’t easy to pick up extras that you need once on the cruise ship.

It’s important to be prepared with all your cruise essentials, including toiletries, medications, cruise accessories and shoes (yes, many people forget their formal night shoes !!).

In this post, we go over:

  • What clothes to pack for a Caribbean cruise (his & hers)
  • Must have items for a Caribbean cruise

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise

If you’re taking a 7 day Caribbean Cruise, you’ll need outfits for your sea days on the cruise ship, and other days in port. You’ll also need to plan for evening wear on your cruise .

It’s a good idea to check your cruise line’s dress codes. However, in most cases a 7 day cruise will include 2 Formal, Dress Your Best or Chic Evenings . The other evenings will be casual or smart casual dress.

If your cruise is 5 nights or less, you’ll only need one formal attire outfit or there may not be a formal evening at all. However if your cruise is 10 nights or longer, you can expect an extra chic night. Keep in mind that cruise line dress codes apply in the main dining room, and not the buffet and casual restaurants.

53 Must-Haves to Pack for your Caribbean Cruise

Here’s a list of the most essential items to pack for your cruise . I’ve included both cruise accessories that will be useful for any cruise, as well as things to bring that are specific for your Caribbean Cruise.

1. Passport or Government Issued ID

The most important things to pack for your cruise to the Caribbean is your passport and government ID. Make sure to have this on you, and do not pack it in your checked luggage . If this happens, there’s a good chance that you won’t be able to get it back on time to be able to board your cruise.

Passports for a cruise

2. Proof of Vaccine and/or Testing Results

As cruises are sailing again, many cruise lines have vaccine requirements and/or will be asking for Covid 19 test results as you board on embarkation day. Please check with your cruise line or travel agent for requirements for your booking.

Vaccine protector

These waterproof vaccine holders on cruise lanyards are practical.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended:  Vaccine protectors on lanyards (see details on Amazon)

3. Cruise documents

Print out your cruise documents, as well as flight and hotel reservations and other travel documents you might need.

4. Passport Travel Wallet holder

It’s a good idea to keep your passport in a passport wallet/holder. This one is so practical and will ensure that you don’t make the mistake of packing your passport in your luggage.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Passport travel wallet (check price & reviews on Amazon)

5. Cruise Carry-on Bag

While you’ll check your luggage at the cruise terminal, you’ll want to have a cruise carry on bag with all you need for embarkation day . In here, you can keep your essentials like a change of clothes, a bathing suit and cover up, and medications and valuable.

A small suitcase , small duffel bag or backpack all make great cruise carry-on bags.

caribbean cruise trip

Here’s full cruise carry on packing list , and I will include it at the bottom of this post as well.

6. Non-surge Protected Power Bar

It’s surprising, but most cruise ship cabins have only 2 electric plugs. If you’re bringing electronic items like phones, pads, speakers, go-pros and anything else, you’ll really want more plugs.

Very important – Cruise lines won’t allow you to bring a regular surge-protected power bar from home and it will be confiscated . It’s very important to have a non-surge protected one that is “cruise approved”.

caribbean cruise trip

A lanyard holds your cruise card both on the ship and in port, keeping your hands free. It’s one of the most useful items to bring on a cruise.

Bonus – you can actually pick your own design or theme, which makes it a fun item to take on a cruise vacation!

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended:   Cruise lanyards

8. Cruise Luggage Tag Holders

Your cruise luggage tags will need to be printed, then folded and stapled and put on your luggage. While this is perfectly fine, the paper can be flimsy and it takes time to do this the morning of your cruise.

Luggage tag holders are reusable, and truly one of the best cruise accessories you’ll ever have. They’re available for every cruise line (in wide or long sizes).

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Plastic Sleeve luggage tags (check link for specific cruiseline options)

9. Medication (prescription & over the counter)

Make sure to pack both prescription and over the counter medications. It’s a good idea to pack a small pharmaceutical bag or DIY first aid kit with bandaids and other useful items.

For a complete list of items to pack in your cruise first aid kit, please see this post:  31 Cruise First Aid Kit Essentials To Bring on Your Cruise

10. Reef safe Sunscreen

One item not to forget to pack for your Caribbean cruise is sunscreen. The sun is much more intense on the cruise ship, especially when at sea.

Unfortunately, my husband learned his lesson the hard way 😉

caribbean cruise trip

11. Lip balm with SPF

I always pack several lip balms when we go on a cruise, for each member of the family – you don’t want to forget these. Trust me – lips can burn and swell up, which isn’t pretty or comfortable.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended:   Banana Boat Lip Balm SPF 50

12.  Aloe Vera – After Sun Care

If you do get a bit too much Caribbean sun, you’ll be happy to have non-sticky aloe vera after-sun gel that will ease a sunburn. While sold on the cruise ship, it will be more expensive than planning ahead.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Organic Aloe Vera Gel (see almost 50,000 amazing Amazon reviews)

13. Polarized Sunglasses

This selection of fashionable polarized sunglasses for men and women on Amazon is so reasonable. If you need some sunglasses to bring along on your Caribbean Cruise, check out the awesome styles.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended:  Polarized sunglasses (see awesome choice of fashion brands here)

13. Insect Repellent

While you’re unlikely to need mosquito or bug spray if you stay near the port or head to a beach, you’ll need it for some shore excursions . If you’re heading into the forest, like going zip-lining or river tubing, bring along insect repellent.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended:  Deep Woods Insect Repellant (see reviews here)

15. Beach Bag

Bring along a good quality waterproof, zippered beach bag that can hold all your towels, sunscreen, water bottles etc. This is the bag we use, and it actually doubles as our carry on bag for Caribbean cruises. You can find more beach and tote bags for all your needs in this post .

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended:   Large zippered nautical beach bag

16. Waterproof Phone Case

It’s a good idea to bring a waterproof phone case on your cruise, for sea days by the pool as well as port days by the beach. This one includes the ability to use the touch screen as well.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Waterproof Phone Case with cruise lanyard

17. Seabands

Make sure to have some motion sickness remedies, as it’s always possible to be affected by some seasickness during your cruise .

Seabands are a practical, natural remedy for many experienced cruisers.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Seabands (see both adult and children’s sizes on Amazon)

18. Seasickness Medication

Bring along some Bonine or other seasickness medication, in case you feel some motion due to rough seas. It’s handy to have just in case.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Bonine seasickness tablets

19. Ginger Candies

Ginger candies are a natural way to ease an upset stomach or mild motion sickness on a cruise . They’re great on tenders and small boat excursions as well.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Tummydrops ginger candies

20. Snorkel and Mask

If you’re planning on heading to the beach or boat excursion, you’ll want to bring your own snorkel set on your cruise. It can be used again and again, and will likely be one of your favorite things ever!

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended:   Check out the Amazon reviews for this full face mask style snorkel set (to see why people are loving it)

Packing for your Caribbean cruise

21. Towel Clips

While pool and beach towels are provided by the cruise line, so no need to pack these, they just won’t stay put without towel clips . Caribbean cruises are breezy!

Beach and pool towel clips are available in different styles (flamingo, margaritas, flip flops) are a practical and fun item to pack for your cruise.

caribbean cruise trip

22. Towel Bands

Save space with these cute and practical towel bands , a good alternative to towel clips.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Towel bands (see variety of fun styles)

23. Refillable Water Bottles

I love these space-saving roll-able and collapsible water bottles. While obviously convenient on the cruise ship, more than that I love how they don’t take room in my luggage or beach bag when not being used.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Collapsible 20 ounce water bottles

23. Swimsuit Cover Up

A pretty bathing suit cover up is a must-have cruise wear for a Caribbean cruise. You may want to bring a couple for both cruise ship and beach days.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Swimsuit cover up (see different colors on Amazon)

24. Water Shoes

These lightweight water shoes are comfortable and easy to pack for your cruise. Some Caribbean beaches, even cruise line private islands, can be grainy or rocky, so it’s a good idea to pack a pair for everyone in the family.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Water shoes/Water socks (see different color choices on Amazon)

25. Binoculars

Keep your eye out for flying fish, whales and dolphins. Although more common on Alaskan cruises ,  it’s actually possible to see marine life during your Caribbean cruise. However, you’ll want to have binoculars handy whether you’re watching from the Lido deck or your balcony.

caribbean cruise trip

26. Waterproof Dry Bag

This waterproof dry bag is perfect for cruise shore excursion days. This best-selling Amazon item comes in a several sizes and colors.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended:   Floating waterproof dry bag (verify price on Amazon)

27. Portable Lock-box Safe

Cruisers often wonder where they can put valuables and identification when on excursions or hanging out on the beach. This useful item has become one of the most popular cruise accessories.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Portable lock box safe (check reviews on Amazon)

28. Portable Phone Charger

While a cruise power bar is important to have, a portable charger is super practical.

We used this one on our last cruise to charge two phones at a time! It was awesome and long lasting!

caribbean cruise trip

While not a true cruise must-have, a Go-Pro is a great way to get amazing video footage on your vacation, on active excursions and in the ocean (it goes underwater). If you’re looking for a new toy and want to create a vacation  video or Vlog, you’ll love the image quality of the new Go Pro 9.

You can also pick up a few accessories made specifically for a Go Pro that will be helpful.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Go Pro 9 (see price & reviews on Amazon)

53 Essentials to pack for your Caribbean Cruise

Useful Cruise Accessories

30. hanging “over the door” organizer.

Cruisers swear by the hanging organizer for toiletries and other essentials on a cruise. This can be a great way to keep your cruise cabin organized .

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Hanging cabin organizer (see Amazon link for price & details)

31. Magnet Hooks

I personally recommend these magnetic cabin hooks. When we used them in our cabin on our last cruise, they freed up space in the closet (and on chairs). The small hooks are “heavy duty” so they can hold the weight of a backpack or sweatshirt, but also are a good place to store sunhats and hang bathing suits to dry.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: 6 pack Magnetic Hooks

32. Cruise Approved Power Bar or Cube

This multi outlet cube is a real space saver and absolute essential for cruising and traveling. In contrast to larger power bars, this “cube” is perfect if you’re trying to pack light for a cruise (as it’s so small). Yet it still has 3 electric outlets and 3 USB Ports!!

caribbean cruise trip

Tip: Cruise lines don’t allow power bars from home with extension cords, so make sure to pack one like this which is “cruise approved”.

Recommended:  Cruise power cube (check price here on Amazon)

33. Hanging Toiletry Bag

This hanging toiletry bag and organizer makes it so easy to unpack the necessities on a cruise!

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Hanging toiletry bag (over 14000 5* ratings on Amazon)

34. Poo-Pourri Bathroom Spray

This one is well loved and not talked about that often. However, Poo-pourri one of the most popular Amazon cruise products being ordered.

caribbean cruise trip

35. Cabin Alarm Clock

If you like to know the time during the night or don’t want to rely on your cell phone, consider a simple travel battery operated clock. A lot of cruisers swear this is one of their favorite cruise accessories.

caribbean cruise trip

36. Motion Sensor Nightlight

This portable motion sensor nightlight is so practical and makes a great gift for cruisers . This is especially handy for inside cabins, which will be pitch black when the lights are off.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended:  Battery operated nighlight

37. Portable Fan

Cruise cabins can get stuffy. This small fan is battery operated, but rechargeable, and gets great reviews on Amazon.

caribbean cruise trip

38. Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are fabulous for cruises. Consider getting at least 2 sets with different sizes, and color code to keep better organized.

Extra Items to Pack for Your Cruise

Many cruise lines allow you to bring 1 bottle of wine per adult , without charge. You can place them in your carry on luggage. Please check your cruise line policy before you go.

40. Thermal Coffee Mug

This stainless steel tumbler comes with a bonus of stainless steel straws, perfect for cruises which have reduced plastic on board and therefore no longer give out plastic straws.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Thermal Coffee Mug (see color options and 5 * reviews on Amazon)

41. Toiletries

Pack your favorite toiletries . This includes basic items such toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving cream etc. You may also want to pack perfume, moisturizers and other personal items.

42. Wrinkle Release Spray

You might find that your cruise clothing gets a bit wrinkled as you unpack. Cruise cabins won’t have irons, as they’re a fire hazard – and you can’t bring steamers either.

So, wrinkle release spray is a good way to get wrinkles out of your cruise outfits .

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended:   Downy Wrinkle Release (travel size)

43. Tide-to-Go Stain Remover Stick

An essential item to have when cruising and traveling is a Tide To Go Stain remover stick. Inevitably you’ll spill coffee or wine, or get pen marks on white jeans (me!!) and a little stain remover will save your cruise outfits!

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Tide To Go Stain Remover Stick

44. Individual Hand Sanitizer Wipes

Keep individual hand sanitizer wipes on hand for shore excursions and even when on a flight heading to your cruise ship.

caribbean cruise trip

45. Mesh Laundry Bag

46. Highlighter & Post it Notes

While your cruise line will have an app to use, you may also like to look at the print version of the daily planner. A highlighter can help to mark off the activities you want to do.

Post it’s are also great to leave a note for your cabin steward .

47. Crew Thank You Cards

If you’d like a place to leave an additional tip or to write a note to your favorite crew members, these thank you cards are perfect.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Crew thank you cards

48. Electronics Organizer Bag

Keep all your chargers, wires and cables together in a small electronics organizer bag .

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Electronics accessory organizer bag (see details & Amazon reviews)

49. Travel blowdryer

A small blowdryer will be provided in your cruise cabin. However the quality will be similar to that of  a hotel. If that’s not powerful enough for you, consider bringing a small quality blowdryer.

This compact hairdryer by BabyLliss Pro works almost as well as my large salon quality dryer, and is perfect to bring along on a cruise.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: BaByLiss Pro travel hairdryer (see over 3000 Amazon reviews)

How to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise

How to pack for your cruise is almost as important as what to pack for your cruise! Here are a few tips.

  • Stack and roll a few similar items together and roll tightly
  • Put socks in your shoes to keep their shape
  • Use packing cubes to keep organized and compress items

These packing accessories will help keep your cruise outfits organized and less wrinkled

50. packing cubes.

While there are pros and cons to packing cubes , they are a very popular travel product for cruises.

Packing cube tips – consider buying at least 2 sets, in different colors. It helps to keep everything organized for each member of the family. As well, take a look at the different sizes available. We found large and medium to be the most useful for most of out clothing.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Packing cubes (see colors & set options here on Amazon)

51. Compression Packing Cubes

Keep organized and fit more into your luggage with compression packing cubes. I love traditional packing cubes (above), and found them very helpful on our last cruise.

I’ll give these compression cubes a try when I cruise again, however if you’ve used them, please let me know and share your review in the comments.

caribbean cruise trip

Recommended: Compression packing cube set (see reviews & options)

53. Garment Bag

Along with a good suitcase and carry on bag, a garment bag is a must-have if you’re bringing dressy clothes or formal wear on your cruise .

Goodness! You pack about 3 -4 times more clothes than than I do. Lots of great ideas though. Keep up the good work.

Lol, I know I really do bring a lot. Thanks for the kind words and for sharing your own experiences!

We cruise for 4 or 5 weeks at a time so use compression packing cubes to save space. I’ve managed to pack enough for 4 weeks ( with some laundry done) in a large and medium pack each. The saved space is then used for sunscreen, toiletries, shoes and all the kit required by my disabled husband. Travelling light isn’t an option for us.

Thanks so much for sharing!

Turks & Caicos

British virgin islands, u.s. virgin islands, st. vincent & the grenadines, cayman islands, st. kitts & nevis, st. martin - st. maarten.

caribbean cruise trip

Travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands to see some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the Caribbean, including Grace Bay. Home to one of the largest barrier reef systems in the world, this collection of coral islands also offers unforgettable experiences for snorkelers and scuba divers. Whether you choose to spend the bulk of your time on land or underwater, these islands make a wonderful retreat for those seeking maximum comfort in a tropical setting. However, hotel prices can be higher here than in other Caribbean locales, especially during the peak winter season.

caribbean cruise trip

Visit St. Lucia for its sprawling chalk-colored beaches, towering volcanic peaks and upscale resorts. You can start your day with a hiking adventure through the Pitons, soak up some midday sun along Reduit Beach and watch the sun set over the Caribbean Sea. You'll want to also save time for a visit to Sulphur Springs, the world's only drive-in volcano. St. Lucia's plethora of romantic luxury hotels, most of which offer incredible views of the Pitons, makes this Caribbean escape especially popular with couples.

caribbean cruise trip

"Posh" is the best word to describe the British Virgin Islands. The island country's beautiful coast sets it apart from other Caribbean destinations. The shoreline at Cane Garden Bay and the white sand beaches on Anegada island are stunning. Meanwhile, the boulders and sea pools at The Baths National Park (touted as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world) mystify visitors. One of the best ways to see these scenic islands is by yacht or on a boat tour from the nearby U.S. Virgin Islands. Alternatively, you can relax on a beach or by a pool at one of the upscale hotels.

caribbean cruise trip

Spring is the time to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, particularly in late April when the boisterous Carnival season on St. Thomas gets underway. Regardless of when you visit, try to spend at least a day enjoying the unspoiled beauty at one of the many beaches along St. John's shoreline, including the popular Trunk Bay beach. Or, visit a fort on St. Croix for a bit of Danish colonial history during your vacation. The best part? Americans don't need a passport to visit these Caribbean islands.

caribbean cruise trip

Comprising 32 islands, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has something to offer every traveler. Enjoy time on the biggest island of St. Vincent in its capital, Kingstown, a port city where you'll find a lush botanical garden and fresh fish and produce markets. Then, hop on a boat and sail between the country's other islands for diving, snorkeling, golfing, sunbathing and photo-ops. No matter how you choose to pass the time, a trip to this destination will be one for the books.

caribbean cruise trip

One of the most scenic spots in the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands is home to premier dive sites, including Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto, as well as plenty of picturesque shorelines such as the world-renowned Seven Mile Beach. For travelers who want to stick to the shallows, Stingray City offers clear water, a sandbar and opportunities to swim with stingrays. Hotel and flight prices tend to be on the lower end during the summer months, so you can enjoy the palm-fringed white sand beaches and serene sea without ruining your vacation budget.

caribbean cruise trip

While you'll certainly find the standard Caribbean staples – picture-perfect sandy beaches, verdant golf courses and palatial resorts – you'll also discover that Barbados offers a unique roster of non-beach things to do. Travel here to sample Mount Gay Rum, explore the limestone caverns of Harrison's Cave and the Animal Flower Cave, attend a horse race at Garrison Savannah and dance to calypso tunes. Don't forget to save time for exploring the island's historical plantation houses and exotic tropical gardens.

caribbean cruise trip

With 16 major islands and hundreds of islets, the Bahamas derives its appeal from its stunning beaches and Caribbean Sea views. The country's beaches run the gamut from bustling Cable Beach to Pig Beach and Pink Sand Beach (both of which derive their names from their most unique characteristics). After enjoying your fill of the Caribbean sun, explore the Bahamas' expansive protected areas, including Lucayan National Park. Just plan on sticking to one or two islands to avoid blowing your vacation budget on transportation costs.

caribbean cruise trip

St. Barts is known for its scenic beaches (from beautiful Anse de Grande Saline to sprawling Anse des Flamands) and unique French Caribbean culture, which is evident in its cuisine and lively annual festivals. St. Barts is also synonymous with luxury, so you'll find many high-end hotels and upscale resorts here, plus harbors that house mega-yachts. To save some coin, grab food at a local supermarket before heading to the beach for a picnic.

caribbean cruise trip

The bright-colored buildings and natural features of St. George's harbor in Grenada offer a view worth savoring. But don't stare for too long – Grenada has more than 45 beaches to choose from, including the 2-mile-long Grand Anse Beach. Regardless of which shoreline you choose, you'll find clear water and white sand surrounded by lush greenery. If you need a break from the sand, head to Belmont Estate for a chocolate tour or stretch your legs on Grand Etang National Park & Forest Reserve's hiking trails.

caribbean cruise trip

St. Kitts garners its popularity in part from the soft sands and buzzing nightlife of Frigate Bay. While many choose to vacation here to relax at a resort on the beach and enjoy delicious cuisine (think: tasty seafood and fresh fruit), this destination offers plenty in the way of culture as well. It hosts excellent festivals, most notably the St. Kitts & Nevis National Carnival (known locally as Sugar Mas). When you need a break from the action, hop on a ferry for a daytrip to the quieter island of Nevis, where you'll find Oualie and Pinney's beaches.

caribbean cruise trip

Antigua is home to a wealth of diverse beaches – 365, to be exact. So whether you're interested in grabbing a bite to eat at Valley Church Beach or seeking a more secluded, romantic vacation at Half Moon Bay, you likely won't be disappointed. Plus, Antigua is where you'll find some of the best resorts in the Caribbean. The island also offers historical attractions to recognize Antigua's Colonial past, such as Nelson's Dockyard, constructed by the British Navy using enslaved people for labor, and Betty's Hope, an early sugar plantation.

caribbean cruise trip

As one of the ABC islands (along with Aruba and Bonaire), Curaçao sits outside the hurricane belt, meaning you'll find sunny, pleasant temperatures year-round and little threat from swirling storms that can wreak havoc in the Caribbean. The dependable weather and healthy coral reefs (compared to the rest of the Caribbean) make Curaçao a top destination for divers, snorkelers and beach bums. Plus, this Dutch Caribbean locale boasts a lively capital filled with pastel-colored architecture and culturally significant sights, such as a sand-floored synagogue from the 18th century.

caribbean cruise trip

Home to towering mountains, dense rainforests, colorful coral reefs and stunning beaches, Jamaica boasts diverse scenery that attracts visitors from around the globe. Adventurous travelers can hike, rock climb or dive while their calm counterparts can lounge on Seven Mile Beach's soft white sand or swim in its clear water. It's perfectly possible to spend an entire trip having fun and relaxing at one of the island's numerous all-inclusive resorts. But for an authentic dose of local culture, head to Kingston (the island's capital) to attend a lively festival, listen to reggae tunes and try local specialties like Blue Mountain Coffee and jerk chicken.

caribbean cruise trip

You'll find first-rate beaches and plenty of activities on St. Martin - St. Maarten, as well as an assortment of hotel options and vacation rentals for many budgets. Experienced and first-time scuba divers can explore the reefs, shipwrecks, sea life and rock formations that surround the island. Meanwhile, foodies can savor everything from fresh seafood dishes (think: conch, codfish fritters and whelk soup) to French-Creole specialties, such as callaloo (kale and spinach soup). Or, stop for casual barbecued meat and fresh fish at one of the open-air lolos located along the shore.

caribbean cruise trip

Aruba appeals to all types of travelers: Gamblers can hit the casinos, nature enthusiasts can check out Arikok National Park or hike through the Ayo and Casibari rock formations, and water lovers can explore the sea or sign up for a boat tour. Meanwhile, beach bums can soak up some sun along the shoreline on a lounge chair, typically without overheating thanks to the constant breeze Aruba enjoys. What's more, this island lies outside the hurricane belt, so it's an ideal place to visit year-round, though room rates are generally lowest in late summer.

caribbean cruise trip

Compared to its neighbors, this group of islands has flown under the radar for years but is worth a visit. In this French Caribbean archipelago, you can explore white, golden and black sand beaches. Plus, more than 70% of Guadeloupe's territory is protected nature reserves – not to mention several marine parks complement their dry counterparts – making the country perfect for ecotourists and scuba divers. These preserved areas also appeal to those looking to avoid the crowded resorts and tourist hot spots of more popular Caribbean destinations.

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas has a roundtrip itinerary scheduled to depart Baltimore on April 12, according to the cruise line’s website. “We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” a spokesperson for the line said in an email. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride.

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

US travel alert: Popular cruise line stops visits to its Caribbean resort

A popular cruise line has stopped visiting a private Caribbean resort due to concerns about violence and unrest in the area.

AL.com reports Royal Caribbean has suspended calls at Labadee, its resort on the northern coast of Haiti, after the U.S. State Department issued a travel alert urging tourists not to visit the country. Haiti is at a Level Four travel advisory, alongside countries such as Russia, Syria and Burkina Faso.

“Due to the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we’re temporally suspending our visits to Labadee for our entire fleet,” the company said in a statement. “We continue to monitor and assess the situation with our Global Security & Intelligence Team.”

According to the RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com, Royal Caribbean has extended its itinerary change through at least mid-April. The cruise line will instead visit Perfect Day at CocoCay instead of Labadee, Haiti.

“We’re terribly sorry for the last-minute change – your safety is our top priority,” Royal Caribbean International’s Assistant Vice President of Guest Experiences wrote to guests sailing on the April 14 sailing of Explorer of the Seas, according to the blog.

The company said none of its passengers or crew have faced violence or threats.

According to the Associated Press, a do-not-travel alert was issued for Haiti in July 2023 after U.S. officials raised concerns about for “kidnapping, crime, civil unrest and poor health care infrastructure.” Later that month, the U.S. ordered all family members of U.S. government employees and non-emergency personnel to leave the country. American government personnel have been limited to only confined areas around the Embassy and are not allowed to walk in Port-au-Prince, use any public transportation, visit banks or ATMs, drive at night or travel between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Haiti is located on the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic sharing the island to the east. According to AL.com, the Dominican Republic is under a level 2 advisory with visitors urged to exercise increased caution.

My first cruise was a 7-day disappointment. Even worse, it left me feeling sick long after touching dry land.

  • I took my first-ever cruise in February and realized cruising isn't for me .
  • I had horrible weather and rough seas that left me feeling sick after the cruise.
  • I don't want to roll the dice again, so I have no desire to go on another cruise.

Insider Today

I took my first-ever cruise in February and spent a week sailing around the Eastern Caribbean on the Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas .

Although I was hesitant to dive headfirst into a weeklong cruise, I figured a few days of sunshine in the middle of Minnesota winter would do me good.

Plus, cruises are as popular as ever — and I was curious to see if they actually lived up to the hype.

Well, my vacation wasn't so sunny after all, and I have zero desire to book another cruise.

The weather was awful — and we had to evacuate our first port

It rained on five of the seven days of my cruise, including all three port days.

So, we scrapped our plans to visit beautiful beaches on St. Thomas and St. Maarten and instead slogged through puddles to check out local shops.

We also had to evacuate early on our first port day at Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas due to an incoming storm.

My friend and I got in a couple of hours of cloudy beach time that day, but we headed back to the ship when it started sprinkling.

On our way back, Royal Caribbean announced we were leaving the island early. I appreciate the cruise putting our safety first, but I was still bummed.

We had unusually rough seas throughout the entire cruise

Having never been on a cruise, I had no idea what to expect in terms of motion and whether I'd get sea sick .

My doctor prescribed a scopolamine patch as a precaution to prevent sea sickness, but I had a negative reaction to it and had to remove it. Still, I figured I'd be fine since Wonder of the Seas is a large ship, and I'd heard you don't feel as much movement on larger ships .

Related stories

Well, I felt a lot of movement. And I wasn't alone.

Because we experienced some rougher seas, we felt more motion on the ship than is typical, according to conversations with seasoned fellow cruisers on board and comments from the captain.

One night it was so bad that many of us had trouble walking in a straight line down the hallway. Thankfully, other than a couple of hours of nausea I attribute to too much wine and not enough food, I didn't get sick to my stomach.

But that weird sensation of swaying and rocking got to me.

Motion sickness followed me home

Unfortunately, I could still feel some rocking and swaying after we disembarked. Even after returning home, the feeling didn't go away.

My brain knew I was on solid ground, but I felt like I was still on the cruise ship battling rough waves.

As it turns out, I'd developed "land sickness," also known as mal de débarquement syndrome , where you feel as though you're still swaying on the ship once you get off.

Although it's somewhat rare , it's a form of reverse motion sickness that can last for months or even years after a cruise (or other triggering event).

So far, anti-nausea medication and ginger ale haven't helped much.

As I sit and write this over two weeks later, I'm still rocking, swaying, and bobbing. Although I'm slowly getting better, it's definitely not fun.

I'm avoiding cruises from now on

I had some great laughs with friends on board despite the rough seas and lack of sunshine. A lot of what I experienced probably isn't the norm and maybe I was just unlucky.

But considering I wasn't even sailing during hurricane season in the Caribbean, I don't want to roll the dice again and try another sailing.

One bad experience culminating with motion sickness on dry land is enough to make me want to avoid any cruises in the future.
