FAQ About Travel Insurance to Thailand

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Thailand. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Thailand can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Do I need a visa or passport to travel to Thailand?

You only need a visa to travel to Thailand if you intend to stay longer than 30 days . Short-term stays that fall under that threshold do not require a visa. You do need a passport to enter the country, and it’s recommended your passport be valid for at least six months past your intended entry date to avoid being turned away at the border/customs.

Is it safe to visit Thailand?

According to the latest updates from the U.S. Department of State, it’s safe to travel to most parts of Thailand . The DOS puts  Thailand’s overall threat rating at Level 1, which means you should exercise normal precautions. That said, there is civil unrest and a higher risk of violence in the provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla, which the U.S. DOS has put at Level 3 (reconsider travel).

When is the best time to visit Thailand?

Thailand is beautiful year-round. November through March marks the dry months, following the wet season from May through October.  If you’re sensitive to heat, consider avoiding Thailand in April . That’s the country’s hottest month, and temperatures then regularly hit 105° F (40° C).

You are not legally required to have travel insurance to visit Thailand, but it’s advised so you have the protection and support you need in case of illness, injury, theft or other travel hiccups.

Below are some risks that could make getting travel insurance worthwhile for your trip to Thailand.

Risk of insect-borne diseases

Mosquitos are prevalent in Thailand, and they can transmit diseases like malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, filariasis and Zika. Using insect repellents and mosquito nets, avoiding affected areas and taking prophylactic medications can help prevent infection. But if you do get sick, travel insurance could make all the difference in getting care fast.

Extreme weather conditions

Thailand is a beautiful country full of waterfront vistas and lush, tropical forests, but it’s also situated in a geographic area that’s prone to floods, earthquakes and tsunamis, similar to visiting Japan . Travel insurance policies that include trip cancellation protection and emergency evacuation clauses can protect you financially if your trip is canceled or you need to get out of the country ASAP because of a natural disaster.

Petty theft and pickpockets

Petty theft, including pick-pocketing, is a concern in many tourist areas throughout the world, and Thailand’s major cities of Bangkok and Chiang Mai are no exception. Certain travel insurance policies also include reimbursement for stolen goods, such as a wallet that was snatched during a pick-pocketing event or travel documents that disappeared when your luggage vanished at the airport.

Travel insurance policies can differ greatly depending on the insurer and other factors, such as the size of the deductible or the provider you choose.

Consider these types of coverage when purchasing travel insurance for your trip to Thailand.

Trip cancellation insurance

If you need to cancel your trip to Thailand for a covered reason, trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for pre-paid travel expenses that are non-refundable.

It’s important to note, though, t hat trip cancellation insurance is far from universal . If you just decide you don’t feel like going to Thailand anymore or your boss refuses to give you the time off, your cancellation clause may not apply. Some medical conditions, like pregnancy , are also not covered as a covered reason for cancellation.

Read the fine print carefully to see what’s covered and what isn’t, and consider a CFAR (cancel for any reason) policy if you have additional concerns. With this type of coverage, you can cancel your travel plans for any reason at all and get back around 50% to 70% of your prepaid travel expenses.

Trip delay insurance

Chances are you don’t have a direct flight from your hometown to Thailand. Most people will have to grab one, if not two or three, connecting flights, and that means more layovers and more opportunities for your schedule to go awry. If your flight is delayed and you miss a connection, trip delay insurance kicks in to cover your expenses while you’re stuck in an airport or intermediary city.

Most delay policies have a grace period before they kick in, so you may have to wait 6 or 12 hours before you get reimbursement for delay-related expenses. But once that period has passed, you can make a claim for things like temporary accommodations and food plus the cost of anything you’re missing out on in Thailand while you navigate the delay.

Trip interruption insurance

Trip interruption insurance is like trip cancellation and delay policies except that it applies to a trip that’s already in progress but has to be cut short . Imagine you’re already in Thailand when you get a call about an emergency back home. You have another week of hotel, car and entertainment costs you’ve already paid for, but now you need to return home early.

Your trip interruption insurance could cover those costs so you can go home worry-free, but your reason for flying out ASAP needs to be an emergency covered by your policy (e.g., illness or death in the family, terrorism at your travel destination, etc.).

Travel medical insurance

It’s extremely doubtful your U.S. health insurance company offers any coverage while you’re abroad, so travel medical insurance is crucial . Look for policies that cover medical expenses related to both illnesses and accidents, so you’re taken care of whether you contract the common cold or need an ambulance ride after you slip and fall at the Temple of Dawn.

Medical evacuation insurance

If you become sick or are hurt beyond what a local hospital or doctor’s office can handle, you may need to be moved to another country where trauma care is more readily available. Medical evacuation insurance goes beyond medical expenses to cover transportation, like Medevac rides to get you to an advanced facility as soon as possible.

Insurance for personal items

Some travel insurance companies offer coverage that includes replacing or reimbursing you for baggage and personal items that are lost and stolen. This is a good thing to have in areas where petty theft is common, but there are always exceptions. You will likely need to file a police report to turn into your insurance company when you file a claim, and there are typically caps on how much your policy will cover.

Rental car coverage

Rental car coverage is not automatically included in Thai travel insurance, so you’ll need to ask your insurance company or consider an add-on policy. Read the fine print to see what’s covered. Collision, theft and damage due to a natural disaster are all possibilities but may not all be covered.

The most common travel insurance exclusions are cancellations or trip interruptions caused by what insurance companies call “known or foreseeable events.” That might be something like wanting to cut your trip short because you don’t like all the bugs in Thailand or bailing on the trip altogether because you heard it’s been raining really hard.

Other things that may not be covered include:

  • Endemics and pandemics (some companies have or had temporary COVID-19 policies )
  • Cancellations due to poor paperwork or malfeasance, such as if you’re detained at customs or tried to travel with a soon-to-expire passport
  • Medical expenses or repatriation needs resulting from a risky activity (e.g., cliff diving or hot air ballooning with a non-licensed company) or due to a pre-existing condition.

Travel insurance can cost as little as around $1 per day for the most basic medical and medical evacuation coverage . For a more comprehensive policy, you can expect to pay around $7 to $11 per day.

To give you a better idea of how much travel insurance will cost for a trip to Thailand, we got price quotes from some popular travel insurance providers.

We applied these details to our quotes:

  • Age: 35 years old
  • Destination: Thailand
  • Trip Length: 7 days
  • Trip cost: $2,000

We’ve displayed our price quotes for basic travel insurance coverage in the table below. These plans range from less than $1 per day to $6 per day.

Example Where Plan Doesn’t Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

A more comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers trip cancellation and trip interruption will be a bit more expensive. Our quotes from the same providers show that this type of protection costs around $7 to $11 per day.

Example Where Plan Does Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

Keep in mind that the final cost of your Thailand travel insurance will depend on a variety of factors, including the following:

  • The amount of coverage you need
  • How long you’re traveling for

To get the best Thailand travel insurance, think about when you’re going, how you’ll get there and when you want to buy your policy.

Then, follow these tips:

  • If you travel often, consider an annual multi-trip policy and you could save by bundling.
  • Get lower premiums by increasing the excess/amount you’ll pay if you do need to make a claim.
  • Get quotes for a Thailand-specific policy rather than one that covers all of Asia.
  • For longer stays, look at extended-stay insurance or backpacker policies.

Do I really need travel insurance for Thailand?

Travel insurance for Thailand is not legally required, but a policy is recommended so you can protect yourself against everything from a canceled or delayed trip to catching the flu or dengue fever during your visit.

Is health insurance still required in Thailand?

Health insurance was required for visitors to Thailand during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that policy is no longer in place.

What is the best health insurance in Thailand for foreigners?

The best health insurance in Thailand for foreigners is the policy that offers the best coverage for your specific needs, health history, length of stay and the level of risk associated with your health or the type of activities you have planned. Try using our online comparison tool to find the best travel insurance policy for you.

Frequently asked questions, what is the period of insurance that i should buy.

The period of insurance required depends on the intended duration of stay in Thailand and the type of visa being applied for and the Embassy of each country. Please, confirm with your local Thai Consulate/Embassy the specific case.

If I’m tested positive for COVID-19 but I don’t have any symptoms. Will AXA pay for the medical expense?

Yes, AXA will cover the medical expense incurred based on medical necessity if you’re tested positive for COVID-19 regardless of the showing of symptoms.

  • in accordance with the medical indication of the current medical standard;
  • not primarily for the convenience of the patient or his/her family or treatment provider solely; and
  • in accordance with the suitable standard of patient care based on the necessity of injury or sickness of the patient

In the determination of Medical Necessity, AXA also follows the guideline published by the Ministry of Public Health.

The display of symptoms is not the only indicator used by AXA in the determination of Medical Necessity. If the medical expense incurred is medically necessary, then AXA will cover it even if there are no symptoms. Similarly, a COVID19 test result is not the only indicator used by AXA in the determination of Medical Necessity. What You Need to Know About Expat Health Insurance in Thailand

You will find health insurance gives significant peace of mind while you travel in the Land of Smiles. Infectious diseases, traffic accidents, and foodborne illnesses are common in Thailand. The country also offers many high-risk adventure sports, boating trips, and regional excursions. Understanding your health insurance options in Thailand will give you the greatest peace of mind as you start to explore your new home country.

Thailand is a popular destination for travelers and expats alike. The low cost of living, beautiful weather, delicious food, and large, supportive digital nomad community make the decision to relocate to Thailand an easy one. But safety and health are still important, so having comprehensive health insurance in Thailand is essential. Recently, it has also become mandatory.

As of 2021 , all visitors to Thailand, whether short or long term, are required to hold travel or international medical insurance that includes COVID-19 and has minimum coverage of $100,000. We have both travel and global plans that will cover the Thai government’s insurance requirements. Contact us to receive a quote for insurance that best suits your particular needs.

In general, Thailand has high-quality healthcare. An estimated 99.5% of the population has access to the country’s universal health care program which has been in effect since 2002. In major centers like Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Chiang Mai there are excellent facilities and English-speaking staff.

However, in more rural areas, health care services can be limited and are mostly run by volunteers. There are over 1 million village health volunteers throughout Thailand , and these volunteers have taken on even more responsibility in the health care system since the COVID pandemic. Throughout the country, the majority of first responders are volunteers, and fully equipped ambulances are only sent to a scene once volunteers have assessed the situation. Even in a large city like Bangkok, 65% of emergency cases are handled by volunteers .

Healthcare in Thailand and “Local Insurance” Options

Budget-conscious expats who are self-employed will likely have heard of “local private health insurance” as an option in Thailand. Local insurance is a form of private health insurance that’s sold by Thai companies and even banks to expats in Thailand. Advertisements are common in expat-targeted newspapers and magazines in Bangkok and other popular tourist destinations.

If you are obtaining a long-term Thai visa, you may be required to get insurance from a specific list of local insurers. Discuss this issue with your local visa consultant.

Local Thai Insurance for Internationals – Advantages

On the plus side, local insurance is often inexpensive and accessible. Using it is as simple as showing your insurance card to the hospital staff. Local hospitals are used to dealing with local insurance and they’ll take care of all your paperwork. This is no small thing in a country famous for its love of administration!

Patients are normally required to visit a hospital or clinic within their medical insurance company’s roster of approved partners, otherwise known as going to an “ in-network ” facility. If a patient has to use an out-of-network medical facility, they will have to pay upfront and submit a claim to their insurance provider.

Local Thai Insurance for Foreigners – Disadvantages

Local insurance can come with many exclusions. For instance, accidents that result from motorcycle rides are often not covered. That might not sound like a big deal before you move, but once you arrive you’ll soon see that virtually everyone in Thailand travels by motorcycle! Local insurance policies also carry claim limits.

Like many insurance policies, you get more coverage when you invest in a more expensive policy. However, knowing how much to purchase can be stressful if you aren’t familiar with the average cost of medical services at Thai hospitals. And finally, your local insurance policy may very well be written in Thai, which can be especially confusing in the middle of a health crisis.

Best Private International Health Insurance Plans for Expats in Thailand

International health insurance plans in Thailand offer a few additional benefits over and above local medical insurance plans. They have global coverage, so you’ll stay protected anywhere in the world. Furthermore, they are more comprehensive and provide you with access to a wider variety of healthcare facilities and doctors.

For expatriates moving to Thailand, we would recommend two options for expat health insurance in Thailand.

First is the William Russell Insurance plan. William Russell is a leading global insurer with great service and benefits. They have a strong presence throughout Southeast Asia, ensuring you can get treatment in Thailand or adjacent countries.

thailand doctor with patient

The second suggested plan, primarily for US citizens living abroad, is GeoBlue Xplorer . This insurance for Americans living in Thailand offers similar benefits and services to the Cigna plan. GeoBlue Xplorer is offered in association with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of America and comes with the excellent BCBS network of high-quality doctors and hospitals worldwide.

For more options, view our list of the best international health insurance companies .

If you’re an expat retiree, you may find it challenging to get local health insurance coverage in Thailand. Most local insurers exclude coverage or do not sell policies to senior citizens. In this case, it’s best to have international health insurance to cover your medical needs.

Joining Thai Social Security as an Expat

If your work in Thailand involves a traditional employer-employee relationship, you’ll be eligible to enroll in the national social security program. This means that your employer is responsible for directing a portion of your pay into the government-administered health care program.

There are two huge advantages to government-administered health insurance in Thailand. The first is that your employer is taking care of the paperwork and administration on your behalf. The second is that it can be a great way to save costs. The plan is very economical and having your health care coverage seamlessly taken care of is a huge perk!

The cost works out to 5% of your gross salary and caps out at 750 Thai Baht a month. The benefits include both medical treatment and the medicine required for treatment.

While this can be cost-effective, subscribers may not be able to access the same doctors that they can with international private medical insurance. Consider what kind of care you would like to receive. You may wish to add on private international medical insurance.

Are Public Hospitals in Thailand Good?

Expats using local insurance or social security can access only public hospitals. Expats with private health insurance can be treated at private and public hospitals.

The standard of care in Thailand public hospitals varies. Frequently, there are long lines, limited support staff, and physician consultations are brief. In nearly all facilities, the patient is responsible for their own meals and personal hygiene.

Therefore, it’s not surprising that a significant portion of expats supplement their coverage or go entirely with comprehensive expat health insurance in Thailand. With private health insurance in Thailand, expats are sure to receive the best medical care in the best private hospitals in the country.

hospitals in thailand

One of the major benefits of a global medical plan is that you can actually receive treatment in any country of your choice. So if you can’t find a specialist that fits your needs in Thailand, you can be treated by a specialist in another country and still be covered by your insurance.

An international health insurance plan is the best option as it provides emergency evacuation or repatriation. This is the recommended insurance for Americans living in Thailand because it lets you receive medical treatment in the US in case you find the local healthcare insufficient for your needs. Evacuation costs will be covered by the international insurance plan, so you don’t have to worry about this part.

For more information about hospitals in Thailand, read: Hospitals in Thailand for Foreigners and Expats

Feel Secure With Comprehensive Private Health Insurance for Expats in Thailand

Expat health insurance plans in Thailand bring a greater level of comfort and care. A private health insurance plan gives access to private hospitals where trained staff will take care of your food and hygiene! With a private health plan, expats have access to an expansive worldwide provider network and can choose whichever doctor they want within the network.

Expat insurance in Thailand also provides a much broader level of coverage, so there is no need to worry about reaching your coverage limit after just a few days of care. Expats also have access to English-speaking support staff, preventative medicine programs similar to home, and second opinions in the case of an emergency.

There are several options for expat insurance in Thailand. Do your research and talk with one of our insurance experts to help you find the best plan for your specific needs and budget.

What should your Travel Insurance cover for a trip to Thailand?

At a minimum, your travel insurance to Thailand should cover trip cancellation, trip interruption and emergency medical expenses. When it comes to international travel, the US Department of State outlines key components that should be included in your travel insurance coverage. AXA Travel Protection plans are designed with these minimum recommended coverages in mind.

  • Medical Coverage   – The top priority is making sure your health is in order. With AXA Travel Protection, you can have access to quality healthcare during your trip overseas in the event of unexpected medical emergencies.

Imagine this: you’re exploring the night markets of Patpong, trying new foods and exotic tastes that Thailand has to offer. Suddenly, you feel queasy and uneasy, the snacks you have been snacking on seem to have been spoiled and you’re feeling ill. With AXA Travel Protection, we could help assist or guide you to the nearest hospital. Whether the situation goes from bad to worse, AXA is there to help you create a plan of action. Here’s how travelers can benefit from an AXA Travel Protection Plan:

Medical Benefits:

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Should you fall ill or have an accident during your trip, your policy may offer coverage for medical expenses, including hospital stays and doctor's fees.
  • Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: In case of a serious medical emergency, your policy may include provisions for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or repatriation.
  • Non-Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation : In non-medical crises (e.g., political unrest), your policy may cover evacuation or repatriation, subject to policy terms.

Pre-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Cancellation: You may be eligible for reimbursement if you cancel your trip due to a sudden illness or injury.
  • COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.
  • Trip Delay: If your flight faces delays due to unforeseen circumstances, you may have coverage for additional expenses such as meals and accommodations.

Post-Departure Travel Benefits

  • Trip Interruption: In case of an unexpected event, you could be eligible for reimbursement for the unused portion of your trip.
  • Missed Connection: If you miss a connecting flight due to delays or cancellations, this coverage may help with expenses like rebooking fees and accommodations.

Baggage Benefits:

  • Luggage Delay: If the airline delays your checked baggage, your policy might offer reimbursement for essential items like clothing and toiletries.
  • Lost or Stolen Luggage: In the unfortunate event of permanent loss or theft of your luggage, your policy may offer reimbursement for its value, assisting you in replacing your belongings.

Additional Optional Travel Benefits:

  • Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver): Exclusive to Gold & Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit gives travelers extra coverage on their rental car against damage and theft.
  • Cancel for Any Reason: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders; this optional benefit gives travelers more flexibility to cancel their trip for any reason outside of their standard policy.
  • Loss Skier Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate some costs associated with pre-paid ski tickets that you or your traveling companion cannot use due to specified slope closures.
  • Loss Golf Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate the expenses linked to prepaid golf arrangements that you or your travel companion are unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.

Do I need Travel Insurance for Thailand?

So, do you need travel insurance for Thailand? The short answer is no. Since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand has dropped its requirement for travelers to have insurance for entry. However, it’s still highly recommended that you have a plan before embarking on your next trip.

Medical Emergencies: Your health is a top priority. If you face a sudden illness or injury in Thailand, travel insurance offers the means to receive prompt and quality medical care.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue on.

Flight Delays:  Travel disruptions like flight delays can happen. If you miss a connecting flight or incur additional expenses due to delays, travel insurance can help cover the costs.

How much does Travel Insurance cost for Thailand?

In general, travel insurance to Thailand costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

  • Total Trip cost:  The total non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.
  • Age:  Like any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Thailand will be offered three tiers of insurance:  Silver,   Gold  and  Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

Our Suggested AXA Travel Protection Plan

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the  Silver Plan ,  Gold Plan , and Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Thailand hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses. The Platinum Plan is your go-to choice if you're looking for extra coverage for Thailand’s experience. "Cancel for Any Reason" offers greater flexibility for those unexpected twists in your travel plans and the "Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver)" offers assistance when you're out exploring Thailand's stunning landscapes in a rental car.

What types of medical coverage do AXA Travel Protection plans offer?

AXA covers three types of medical expenses:

  • Emergency Medical
  • Emergency evacuation & repatriation
  • Non-medical emergency evacuation & repatriation

Emergency Medical: Unexpected incidents that arise, such as broken bones, burns, unexpected illnesses and allergic reactions.

Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation:  This can cover evacuation assistance when you need to leave a destination immediately for non-medical-related events. These could be things like natural disasters or civil unrest.

Are there any COVID-19 restrictions for Travelers to Thailand?

Best Thailand Covid Insurance for Foreigners

Thailand Covid insurance is a health insurance that is mandatory for foreigners traveling to Thailand during pandemic. Just before the borders of Thailand were closed, the Thai government applied a new insurance requirement to cover COVID-19 treatment to all travelers entering Thailand.

All incoming foreign travelers must provide a health insurance policy with an insured amount of at least 10,000 USD, covering outpatient and inpatient treatment of the coronavirus type COVID-19 upon departure to Thailand. This rule came into effect on March 19, 2020.

Update! Starting from 1 July 2022 , insurance with minimum 10,000 USD coverage will NO LONGER required!

According to the Thailand Insurance Commission, COVID-19 insurance for foreigners is approved to cover travelers who pass through immigration in Thailand. The coverage should be valid for medical treatment after the diagnosis of COVID-19 infection and necessary treatment, the company should pay compensation up to 10,000 USD.

In the event of a COVID-19 illness in Thailand, health insurance should cover the costs of care and treatment by a general practitioner or specialist, the medicine prescribed by a doctor, necessary patient transport and hospitalization in a local hospital.

General information about Medical Services in Thailand

Medical services in Thailand are some of the best in Asia so you don't have to worry about your health when you have a health insurance for treatment and related costs in case of an unforeseen situation.

There are about 400 hospitals in Thailand that are accessible to anyone and most of them offer high standard medical services. Moreover, most of the clinics with all the necessary equipment are located in large cities. In the tourist areas you will find many international clinics. In rural areas, it is still not hard to find local clinics, so basic care is definitely available everywhere. They can provide any qualified assistance and conduct an examination.

Furthermore, if you need any medications , you can buy them freely at any pharmacy at low price. Almost all medicines in Thailand are sold without a prescription.

Medical services are generally cheaper in Thailand, but the bill can add up quickly when you go to private hospitals. Bills from doctors and hospitals in Thailand must be paid immediately in cash or by credit card. You can then get the costs reimbursed in most cases if you have an appropriate insurance covering traveling abroad.

The Lowdown on COVID-19 Travel Insurance & the Cheapest Policy

Vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers are now allowed to visit Thailand freely.

Visitors are no longer required to have the mandatory COVID-19 travel insurance policy, and therefore the information on this page is outdated.

However, all travelers are advised to have travel insurance to cover the event of accident of illness.

+ See here for policy recommendations

covid-19-inbound-travel-insurance

Who Needs COVID-19 Insurance?

This is a compulsory requirement for every foreign national entering Thailand, as announced by the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) in Thailand. There are currently no exemptions.

What Must the Insurance Cover?

The policy must cover both medical expenses and costs associated with death of COVID-19.

Naturally it is also going to cover other illness and accidents, so it's essentially medical insurance with a specific focus on COVID-19.

How Long will this Requirement Last?

At the present time there is no end date, although one would assume it is likely to be a requirement throughout 2022.

It will most likely be removed once the “pandemic” is declared a non-threat to the general population by the World Health Organization and hospitalization numbers fall to a safe level.

Why Does Thailand Require This Cover?

The official line is to help visitors avoid having to pay bills out of their own pocket, which makes sense.

But I think we all know that the authorities fear that hospitals will end up picking up expensive bills for those who become ill with infection and can't pay.

While we know that serious complications affect very few people, and that COVID generally affects those with underlying health conditions, should a person become hospitalized, he or she may require a hospital stay for two weeks or more. And that can become very expensive.

Can I Use My Normal Travel Insurance Instead?

You can, but you will still need COVID-19 coverage, so check that your policy covers this area.

Many people have existing travel insurance as part of a bank account benefits package or medical insurance policy, which may not cover hospitalization due to Covid. If this is the case you will need to buy an additional policy.

Where Can I Buy an Insurance Policy?

16 Thai insurance companies have partnered with the initiative to offer COVID-19 insurance protection to foreign nationals.

The insurance can be purchased online and begins immediately upon arrival in Thailand.

The best place to buy a policy is Mr Prakan . This is a comparison site that searches a number of companies for  the best priced policy.

How Much Does the COVID-19 Insurance Cost?

The good news is that it is not expensive, though age and health status will determine the overall cost.

Of course this is something none of us want to pay, but if you're desperate to get back to Thailand, then you'll be pleased to know that a policy isn't out of financial reach (for most).

I'm from the UK, which is of low risk (currently), and the policy was reasonable.

Let's have a look at a quote I got based on a 90-day stay. I entered my age as 54 years old (1966, the year England won the world cup), and as traveling from the United Kingdom.

insurance-quote

The policy came in at just under 6,000 Baht.

If you are 10 or even 20 years younger, the price drops accordingly. If you're lucky enough to be in your 20's and from a low risk country, you'll be looking at around 1,500 – 2,000 cheaper than my quote for 90 days.

+ Get a Quick Quote Here

I'm Over 65. Can I Get This COVID Insurance?

Yes, just recently more policies have been added to cover those in higher age brackets.

Try Mr Prakan, and you can also try AXA, which notes that they provide insurance for those age 1-75.

axa-covid-19-insurance

Here's a list of other companies you might choose to try:

  • Assets Insurance Co Ltd
  • Chubb Insurance Company Limited
  • Navakij Insurance Co Ltd
  • Pacific Cross Health Insurance
  • Falcon Insurance Co Ltd
  • East Insurance
  • Asia Insurance 1950
  • Bangkok Life Assurance Ltd
  • Thailand Life Insurance

What Else Does the Insurance Cover?

In addition to COVID 19 cover, your policy will have the following additional coverage.

  • Medical expenses cover
  • Accidental cover
  • Urgent dental care
  • Repatriation cover
  • Third-party cover
  • Luggage insurance
  • 24/7 emergency assistance coverage

How Long Can I Get a Policy For?

Policies range from 30-days to a year. My quote was for 90 days, but simply select the duration you expect to stay for in the drop down menu on the quote form.

How Does Immigration Know I Have Purchased My Policy?

When you buy your insurance, you will receive your policy and certification for COVID-19 coverage. You will show this  certificate to your embassy or consulate when applying for your visa.

You may also need to show it to immigration when entering Thailand.

Keep a print out and a copy on your phone, just to make sure you don't leave home without it.

What Other Requirements Are There to Enter?

You will need to provide proof of vaccination and  register for a Thailand Pass. The Pass must be applied for  at least 7 business days before you fly. Only once approved will you be able to travel.

You will also need to get a PCR test to confirm you are COVID-19 negative within 72 hours of your flight.

The full entry requirements are detailed on this page .

A Final Word

While this is touted as a special COVID-19 policy, it's actually a general insurance policy that covers COVID-19.

It may be that your existing policy has this cover included, so as long as it meets the $10,000 threshold 9as of May 1, 2022) you'll be good with that.

Safetywing, for example, has offered COVID cover since last August on both the Nomad and Remote policies.

They offer comprehensive, cross-territory cover, and therefore it is more expensive. More on Safetywing here.

The only other policy requirement, which is mostly standard anyway, is that the policy must allow for direct billing, which means the hospital can send bills straight to your insurer.

Do explore your policy options, but in my experience, if you want the cheapest cover, and only want medical insurance for Thailand until this COVID thing has passed, try Mr Prakan.

Travel Insurance to Enter Thailand

Travel Insurance to Enter Thailand

With Thailand very slowly reopening to visitors, one of the latest requirements for visitors is the mandatory COVID-19 insurance plan for foreigners that covers the traveler for a minimum of $10,000 (the Thai policies generally cover 350 thousand Thai baht). In addition to all the requirements, the traveler needs to obtain a  Thailand Pass  and a valid visa. This health insurance is another level of security to make sure that the traveler can cover all costs in case they are diagnosed with or die from COVID-19 during their stay in the kingdom.

Thai immigration officials are notoriously fastidious when it comes to paperwork, and will only accept policies from certain providers. Luckily, a consortium of insurance providers in Thailand offers COVID-19 insurance for foreigners planning to visit Thailand which will be accepted by immigration, and these policies can be purchased easily online. Although this could be seen as another opportunity to make some easy profits for the insurers, the policies are quite reasonably priced, depending on a few factors; let’s take a closer look.

Why is COVID-19 Insurance Required?

Whilst it may seem like just yet another hassle for beleaguered foreigners wanting to enter the country, there is good reason for the government to implement this requirement. One of the main reasons is that almost all standard health and travel insurance policies will not cover the insured against pandemics, hence will not cover you for anything to do with Covid-19. And with the costs of hospital treatment and possible repatriation, especially when considering the additional quarantine requirements to do with COVID-19, the Thai government is concerned about being lumped with a huge number of unpaid hospital bills from foreigners who come down with COVID-19.

The public health ministry of Thailand has quoted a figure for unpaid hospital bills of 448 million Baht ($14.9M) for the year up to September 2019, a huge sum. And with the threat of the coronavirus, they are concerned about this and don’t want to be stuck with another huge bill right when the economy is struggling because of the effects that the virus has had on tourism and exports. In essence, the requirement to hold one of these policies is an additional layer of security for the Thai government who is already dealing with a hammered economy as a result of the outbreak and subsequent decimation of the tourism industry which provided around a fifth of the country’s GDP.

What is the COVID-19 Coverage?

The COVID-19 insurance policy will cover the costs of isolation, quarantine, testing, and treatment, and the possible costs of repatriating your body in the unfortunate circumstance of you succumbing to the virus whilst in Thailand. It will also cover the cost of any medications prescribed to you as a result of being infected with the virus. The more comprehensive policies will also cover you for any losses incurred as a result of you catching COVID-19 such as lost travel bookings and trip cancellation or curtailment, be sure to check the small print of any policy before purchasing and, as always with insurance, don’t just opt for the cheapest policy.

Ultimately, most of these specialized insurance policies will comprise of three key components:

  • Medical coverage. As mentioned this is a comprehensive package with a cap of a minimum of $10,000, covering all treatment costs associated with being infected with the COVID-19.
  • Life insurance coverage. In an unfortunate circumstance of the insured dying from their confirmed COVID-19 infection, this covers them for a total of $10,000 which will be paid to the beneficiary stated in the policy.
  • Any additional, unforeseen out-of-pocket expenses that arise as a result of you being infected with the virus. This could include lost travel bookings, flights, or any other expenses that arise from travel disruption or curtailment because of you becoming infected with the virus.

You must ensure that you retain the certificate of insurance as this will need to be shown to prove that you have the coverage, without it, you will not be granted entry into the country. Also, it should be noted that this policy will be in addition to any general health insurance policy that you may require to obtain your visa or retirement extensions.

COVID-19 Travel Insurance for Thailand

Unlike the mandatory health insurance for retirees, the COVID-19 insurance may be provided by an international insurance provider or by Thailand-based insurance providers. One of the COVID-19 insurance providers is AXA Thailand. They provide Inbound Travel Insurance for those who wish to secure Travel Insurance that covers COVID-19 as required for inbound travelers.

How To Purchase COVID-19 Travel Insurance?

This insurance is required to be allowed into the country so you will be purchasing this before you travel. The easiest way to buy your policy is online from one of the above providers who will then provide you with the all-important certificate of coverage to present to the authorities when you arrive (and you will also need to present it to the airline before they will allow you onboard). It’s quick and easy to do online, and you can choose your length of policy from 30 days to one year. Be sure that the policy covers the entire period that you are planning to stay in Thailand or you may be refused entry.

COVID Insurance Thailand Cost: Is It Expensive?

In a word, no, but it depends on a few factors. Although this is yet another burden and expense for foreign citizens trying to enter Thailand, it’s quite affordable. You can expect premiums to start from as little as 999 Thai baht for a policy. For the tourist visa or the non-immigrant visa application, the 90-day insurance coverage will cost 2,500 baht to 14,000 baht. As with all insurance policies, the premium will be determined by your circumstances, in this case, one of the most important factors is whether the country you are flying from is considered to be high or low risk for the virus.

Thailand COVID Insurance Requirement

The Thai Government has made it mandatory that foreign citizens entering Thailand have insurance coverage in case of medical needs during their stay. The insurance coverage becomes effective immediately upon your arrival in Thailand. Several foreigners have been reported to test positive for COVID-19 during their stay at the  ASQ Hotel in Thailand . The COVID-19 Insurance Thailand for Foreigners completely covers their medical costs up to 350 thousand THB. You can purchase the insurance online in minutes using the Buy Now feature below. You will immediately receive the policy by email.

The cost of treatment for COVID 19 in hospitals in Thailand ranges from 700 USD to 1,000 USD per day, depending on the hospital. There may also be additional costs of staying in the intensive care unit (ICU). For foreigners who are positive for COVID-19, the cost of treatment and other medical expenses will be covered by the travel health insurance package. It is important to make sure that your insurance for Thailand covers the whole duration of your stay. Therefore, it is essential to purchase the best and reliable COVID 19 travel insurance for foreigners entering Thailand.

Stung by Taylor Swift tour snub, Thailand seals deals for music festivals to boost ailing economy

thailand travel insurance for foreigners

After missing out on Taylor Swift’s world tour, Thailand has sealed deals to host Summer Sonic and Tomorrowland music festivals as it pushes event-driven tourism to propel Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy.

Summer Sonic  will come to Southeast Asia for the first time in its second venture outside of Japan, with dates set for Aug. 24 and 25 in Bangkok after shows in Tokyo and Osaka, according to Thai government spokesman Chai Wacharonke. Thailand will also be hosting dance music festival  Tomorrowland  in 2026, which may be only the first of 10 consecutive editions, Chai said in a statement on Saturday.

The push came after Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who took office in September, identified measures such as visa waivers for tourists as “quick wins” to stimulate Thailand’s economy, which he has repeatedly said is in a “crisis.” Thailand, which has seen an average growth short of 2% in the past decade in a region where a pace upwards of 4% is the norm, has pushed promotional campaigns to extend holidaymakers’ stay and year-round festivals to boost the number of foreign tourists.

Srettha previously  bemoaned  that Thailand had missed out on Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour, which made Singapore its  only stop  in Southeast Asia due to an exclusive arrangement with the neighboring country.

Tycoon-turned-politician Srettha has called Singapore’s move “smart” and said Thailand should seek to emulate such strategies to bring in tourists and boost its economy.

Thailand’s vital tourism industry accounts for 12% of the country’s gross domestic product. This year, the country  aims  to welcome 35 to 40 million foreign tourists, edging near a pre-pandemic record of 40 million visitors.

  • he will agree a new Strategic Partnership with Prime Minister Srettha and the Foreign Minister, deepening economic and security ties and paving the way to closer cooperation between the UK and Thailand

The Foreign Secretary will travel to Thailand today (Wednesday 20 March) to drive forward the UK’s partnership with the one of the biggest economies in South East Asia.

He will look to bolster even closer cooperation through a range of joint priorities including defence, regional security and stability, science and technology, the economy and trade.

The UK and Thailand’s trading relationship is worth around £6 billion annually, and the Foreign Secretary will use his visit to explore ways to strengthen these ties to boost both the UK and Thai economies.

Thailand is an important UK security partner, particularly on advancing peace and reconciliation in Myanmar and protecting international law and regional cooperation. With over half of world trade passing through the Indo-Pacific region, it is also vital to work with Thailand on maritime security to ensure reliable access to the goods the UK wants and needs.

Foreign Secretary David Cameron said:

South East Asia is a commercial powerhouse and Thailand is one of the biggest economies of the lot. Working with countries in this region means jobs and growth back here in the UK.     Thailand is a founding member of ASEAN and an influential player across the Indo-Pacific region. We will continue to work with them to address shared global challenges that affect us all – including the impacts of climate change, rapid technological development, and threats to global health.

The Foreign Secretary will see first-hand the deepening UK-Thailand defence partnership on a visit to a military airbase, where he will showcase UK support for the Gripen aircraft campaign.

The Gripen is a collaboration between the UK, Sweden and the US, with companies across the UK supplying up to 40% of the components for the aircraft. The success of the campaign would not only strengthen the Royal Thai Air Force but would also see an injection of £350 million into the UK economy, creating and supporting jobs from Bournemouth to Manchester.

Three years ago, the UK delivered almost half a million COVID vaccines to Thailand. Since then, UK and Thai researchers have boosted efforts to deliver fair and timely access to affordable and high-quality vaccines through the recently announced UK-South East Asia Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hub.

The Foreign Secretary will meet researchers from this partnership and other inventors, working on challenges from AI to engineering biology, on a visit to a university. There, he will highlight the ambition of the International Science Partnership Fund worth £337 million globally to enable scientific collaboration between UK and Thai researchers and innovators to solve shared global challenges and foster prosperity. Key projects include tackling some of the world’s deadliest diseases, building food security networks and developing clean energy systems.

He will also announce the launch of a UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) Thailand Country Fund worth up to £6 million to boost green growth. This will support sustainable transport, green finance and carbon pricing in Thailand.

David Cameron will sign the UK-Thailand Strategic Partnership Roadmap to strengthen the relationship on defence, climate and energy, trade and investment, agriculture, digital and tech, health and education ahead of next year’s 170-year anniversary of UK-Thai diplomatic relations.

Following his visit to Thailand, the Foreign Secretary will head to Australia for the annual Australia-UK Minister Consultations (AUKMIN).
