Introduction

When embarking on a cruise ship adventure, one of the first things you’ll notice is the deck numbering system. These numbers play a crucial role in helping passengers navigate the massive floating cities that are modern cruise ships. But have you ever wondered how these decks are numbered and what it means for your cruise experience?

In this article, we will delve into the world of cruise ship deck numbering, exploring the different systems used, the significance of these numbers, and how they impact the layout and organization of the ship. From the traditional deck numbering systems to the modern methods used today, we will unravel the mysteries behind deck numbering on a cruise ship.

Understanding the deck numbering system is essential for cruise ship passengers. It not only helps you find your way around the ship but also provides crucial information about the location of amenities, staterooms, and public areas.

So, let’s embark on this journey together and discover the fascinating world of deck numbering on a cruise ship!

Deck Numbering Systems

Deck numbering systems on cruise ships can vary depending on the cruise line and the age of the ship. Generally, there are two main types of deck numbering systems: traditional and modern.

In the traditional deck numbering system, decks are numbered consecutively from the bottom to the top of the ship. The lowest deck, usually located below the waterline, is often referred to as the “lower deck” or “Deck 1.” As you move upwards, the deck numbers increase incrementally. This system is straightforward and easy to understand.

However, with the evolution of modern cruise ships, a new deck numbering system has emerged. In this system, the lower decks are still numbered consecutively, but the higher decks are given thematic names instead of numbers. These names often reflect the different amenities and entertainment options available on each deck, making it easier for passengers to remember and locate specific areas.

The modern deck numbering system often includes deck names like Promenade Deck, Lido Deck, Sports Deck, or Sun Deck. These names not only provide a better sense of the ship’s layout but also add a touch of personality to the overall cruising experience.

While the traditional and modern deck numbering systems differ in their approach, both aim to provide passengers with clear navigation and orientation on the ship. Whether it’s using numbers or thematic names, these deck numbers play a crucial role in helping passengers find their way around the various decks and public areas.

Next, we will explore how these deck numbers are used to designate public areas and staterooms on a cruise ship.

Traditional Deck Numbering

In the traditional deck numbering system, each deck on a cruise ship is assigned a number based on its position from the bottom to the top of the ship. This system is straightforward and commonly used on older cruise ships.

The lowest deck, also known as the “lower deck” or “Deck 1,” is typically located below the waterline. It is usually where you’ll find important facilities such as engine rooms, crew quarters, and storage areas. As you move upward, each subsequent deck is numbered sequentially, increasing as you go higher.

The higher decks on a traditional numbering system are usually reserved for passenger facilities and amenities. You’ll find dining halls, entertainment venues, and other public spaces on these decks. The top deck, often called the “promenade deck,” offers fantastic views and may house specialized amenities such as observation decks, swimming pools, or outdoor activities.

The traditional deck numbering system is practical and easy to understand, as it follows a linear progression from bottom to top. Passengers can navigate between decks by simply following the ascending or descending deck numbers assigned to staircases and elevators. It also provides a sense of familiarity and consistency across different cruise ships that adopt this system.

While the traditional deck numbering system is still prevalent on many cruise ships, it is gradually being replaced or supplemented by modern deck numbering systems that incorporate thematic names for higher decks. This shift is mainly driven by the desire to enhance the passenger experience and make it easier to locate specific amenities on the ship.

Now that we’ve explored the traditional deck numbering system, let’s delve into the modern methods used today and the significance of thematic deck names.

Modern Deck Numbering

In recent years, cruise lines have embraced a more modern approach to deck numbering, incorporating thematic names for higher decks. This shift adds a touch of personality and enhances the passenger experience by making it easier to remember and locate specific amenities on the ship.

While the lower decks in the modern numbering system are still numbered consecutively, the higher decks are given names that reflect the different amenities and entertainment options available. These names often evoke a sense of luxury, adventure, or relaxation, and they vary depending on the cruise line and ship.

For example, you may come across deck names like Promenade Deck, Lido Deck, Sports Deck, Sun Deck, or Spa Deck. These names provide a clear indication of what you can expect to find on each deck. The Promenade Deck may feature shops, restaurants, and lounges, while the Lido Deck could house the main swimming pool and outdoor dining areas.

The use of thematic deck names not only simplifies navigation but also enhances the overall cruise experience. Passengers can easily remember and locate the deck associated with their favorite amenities, making it more convenient to access various parts of the ship.

Additionally, modern deck numbering systems often incorporate color coding or icons to further assist passengers. These visual cues are commonly found on deck plans and onboard signage, making it easier to quickly identify and locate specific areas of interest.

It’s worth noting that while modern deck numbering systems are becoming more prevalent, they may not completely replace the traditional linear numbering systems. On some ships, you may find a combination of both systems, with lower decks numbered sequentially and higher decks designated with thematic names.

Ultimately, the modern deck numbering system enhances passenger convenience and adds a touch of creativity to the cruise experience. It allows cruisers to navigate the ship more easily, discover new amenities, and make the most of their time on board.

Now that we understand the modern deck numbering system, let’s explore how these deck numbers are used to designate public areas and staterooms on a cruise ship.

Designation of Public Areas

Deck numbers on a cruise ship play a crucial role in designating and organizing public areas. From dining venues to entertainment facilities, these deck numbers help passengers easily locate and access the amenities and services available to them during their cruise.

Public areas are typically assigned to specific decks based on their function and purpose. For example, you might find restaurants and dining areas concentrated on certain decks, while entertainment venues like theaters and lounges are located on different decks. This deck designation allows for efficient layout planning and ensures that passengers can easily locate the areas they desire.

The deck number associated with each public area is often indicated on deck plans and onboard signage. These visual aids provide passengers with a comprehensive overview of the ship’s layout, making it easier to navigate and explore the various offerings available on different decks.

On larger cruise ships, you may find multiple decks dedicated to specific types of public areas. For instance, a particular deck might be designated for shopping and boutiques, another deck for recreational facilities like casinos and sports courts, and yet another deck for relaxation areas such as spas and wellness centers.

The use of thematic deck names in modern deck numbering systems further enhances the distinction and designation of public areas. For example, if you’re looking for a particular restaurant, you can easily refer to the deck plan to find the deck associated with dining venues.

It’s essential to familiarize yourself with the deck numbering system and the location of public areas, as this will allow you to efficiently navigate the ship and make the most of the amenities and entertainment options available to you during your cruise.

Now that we understand how deck numbers are used to designate public areas, let’s explore how these numbers are significant when it comes to locating staterooms on a cruise ship.

Location of Staterooms

Deck numbers on a cruise ship are essential for passengers when it comes to locating their staterooms. Staterooms, also known as cabins, are the private accommodations where passengers rest and relax during their cruise.

Staterooms are typically located on multiple decks throughout the ship. The deck number assigned to each stateroom provides valuable information about its location, making it easier for passengers to find their rooms amidst the vastness of the ship.

On most cruise ships, staterooms are organized by deck and categorized into different types, such as interior, ocean view, balcony, or suite. Lower deck numbers often correspond to lower-level staterooms, while higher deck numbers indicate staterooms located on higher levels of the ship.

When booking a cruise, passengers can often choose their preferred deck or stateroom category based on their preferences. Some passengers may prefer a lower-deck location for easy access to public areas and amenities, while others may choose a higher deck to enjoy better views or a quieter atmosphere.

In addition to the deck number, staterooms are typically assigned unique identifiers, such as a cabin number or letter combination. These identifiers further narrow down the location within a specific deck. For example, a stateroom might be identified as “Deck 8, Cabin 832” or “Deck 10, Suite A12.”

Deck plans and signage throughout the ship often provide clear directions to staterooms, allowing passengers to find their accommodations quickly and efficiently. Passengers can refer to the deck plan, which usually includes a legend indicating the stateroom numbers and their corresponding deck locations.

It’s important to note that the location of staterooms can impact the cruising experience. Staterooms located near public areas or high-traffic areas might experience more noise, while those situated higher in the ship may offer better views but require more walking or elevator usage.

By understanding the deck numbering system and the location of staterooms, passengers can have a better grasp of where their accommodations are situated and plan accordingly. Whether you prefer a central location for easy access to amenities or a tranquil spot with breathtaking vistas, the deck number and stateroom location information will help you make an informed decision.

Now that we’ve explored the significance of deck numbers in locating staterooms, let’s move on to the importance of deck plans and signage on a cruise ship.

Deck Plans and Signage

Deck plans and signage play a crucial role in helping passengers navigate a cruise ship. They provide visual representations of the ship’s layout and guide passengers to various amenities, public areas, and staterooms.

Deck plans are often provided to passengers upon embarkation or can be accessed digitally through the ship’s app or onboard screens. These plans are detailed diagrams that showcase the different decks and highlight the locations of various amenities and staterooms.

Deck plans typically include deck numbers, stateroom numbers, public areas, restaurants, entertainment venues, and other important facilities. The clear and organized presentation of this information allows passengers to understand the layout of the ship and plan their activities with ease.

In addition to the deck plans, signage throughout the ship complements the navigation process. Signage is strategically placed in key locations, such as near elevators, staircases, and at important junction points, to guide passengers toward specific areas and facilities.

Signage often includes deck numbers, directional arrows, and icons to quickly communicate information to passengers. For example, a sign may display the deck number along with an arrow pointing towards the dining area or indicate the location of the nearest restroom.

Clear and concise signage enhances the passenger experience by reducing confusion and providing a visual reference for orientation. Passengers can easily follow the signs to locate dining venues, entertainment areas, or other amenities without getting lost or wasting valuable time.

Both deck plans and signage ensure that passengers can navigate and explore the ship with confidence. They help create a seamless and enjoyable cruise experience by providing the necessary information to find desired facilities and staterooms efficiently.

Whether you’re seeking the perfect lounge to relax in, a top-rated restaurant for a gourmet meal, or your stateroom after a day of adventures, the deck plans and signage will guide you every step of the way.

Now that we understand the importance of deck plans and signage, let’s conclude our exploration of deck numbering on a cruise ship.

The deck numbering system on a cruise ship is not just a series of numbers; it is a vital element that facilitates navigation and enhances the overall cruising experience. Whether following the traditional linear deck numbering system or the modern system with thematic names, deck numbers provide valuable information about the ship’s layout and organization.

Understanding the significance of deck numbers allows passengers to easily locate public areas, such as dining venues, entertainment facilities, and relaxation spaces. It also helps in finding staterooms and planning the most convenient route to different destinations on the ship.

The evolution of modern deck numbering systems, incorporating thematic names and visual cues, has further improved passenger convenience and added a touch of creativity to the cruise experience. This shift makes it easier for passengers to remember the deck associated with their preferred amenities, enhancing their overall enjoyment onboard.

Deck plans and signage serve as valuable tools, providing detailed diagrams and clear directions to guide passengers throughout the ship. With easily accessible information about deck numbers, staterooms, and facilities, passengers can navigate the ship confidently and make the most of their time on board.

So, the next time you embark on a cruise adventure, pay attention to the deck numbering system, deck plans, and signage. Use this knowledge to your advantage, allowing you to navigate the ship effortlessly and discover all the wonderful experiences it has to offer.

With an understanding of how decks are numbered and the significance behind it, you’ll be well-prepared to embark on a memorable and smooth sailing journey on your chosen cruise ship.

Cruise Stateroom Categories Explained

how are cruise ship rooms numbered

Contents Show

One of the biggest challenges to booking a cruise is making sure you wind up in the stateroom you want. Whether you’re taking your first cruise or your 100th, it’s easy to get confused… especially when looking at the seemingly random number/letter combinations indicating the various stateroom types.

Because there’s no industry-wide standard, the designations are different for each fleet. Sometimes, they vary from ship to ship within the same cruise line.

So, what do you need to know about categories and what they mean? Let’s break it down.

the interior of staterooms in a cruise ship

On nearly every cruise line, there are four basic stateroom categories. (This does not include exclusive areas, often referred to as ship-within-a-ship categories, such as Norwegian’s Haven or MSC’s Yacht Club.)

Those four categories are:

Just to make things more confusing, these categories are almost always subdivided.

For example, Norwegian offers studios, which are inside cabins designed for single passengers, and several Royal Caribbean ships feature inside staterooms with “virtual” balconies, which, via LED screens, give occupants a simulated real-time view of the outside world.

What You Need To Know

Anthem Balcony stateroom

Booking a cabin on a cruise ship is a lot like booking a hotel room. In both cases, the better the location, the more you’re going to pay. If a hotel is in the heart of the city and near all of its attractions, you’re going to pay more than one outside of town.

Similarly, if a cabin is centrally located on the ship, you’ll pay more. Midship balconies will usually cost more than those located forward or aft. Of course, as with everything, there are exceptions.

Over the past few years, aft-facing balconies — generally larger and with amazing views of the ship’s wake — have become wildly popular and, as a result, among the pricier cabins in the category.

For example, Carnival Cruise Line uses a number to indicate the type of cabin (inside, oceanview, or balcony) and a letter to indicate how desirable the associated location is. Category 7A would be an obstructed balcony, while category 7N would be an extended balcony.

While the various lines each use their own designations, the basic idea is the same.

How To Find Your Perfect Cabin

balcony stateroom interior

You’re spending a pretty penny on the cruise, so you want to make sure you wind up in exactly the right cruise stateroom. For some, that will mean getting a cheaper interior room — arguing that it’s just a place to sleep — in order to have more money to spend elsewhere.

Others can’t imagine setting sail without a balcony on which to sit and enjoy the view.

Once you’ve determined exactly what your priority is category-wise, go to the section of your cruise line’s website showing deck plans. Keep the deck plans open in a separate window as you’re perusing and pricing the options.

While doing so, keep the following in mind:

  • Once you’ve figured out the type of cabin you want, use the deck plans to narrow down your choice of actual room. See what’s above and below to avoid sleeping atop a nightclub or beneath a bowling alley, either of which could mean late-night disturbances.
  • Assume that the room you book is the one you’ll wind up in rather than hoping for an upgrade. They do happen, but if it doesn’t, you’ll be stuck in a room that you didn’t actually want in the first place.
  • Once you’ve put down a deposit, make sure to set an alert so that if the price drops, you can look into the possibility of rebooking the room at the new price or perhaps getting some on-board credit. For details on how to set a price-drop alert, click here .

The Difference Between Stateroom Types, Categories & Guarantees: Demystifying the Stateroom Selection

When booking a cruise you'll inevitably have to decide what type of cabin (aka stateroom) you want.  What's the difference between an inside and an ocean view?  What are all these numbers? G1, B13? Are we playing bingo or going on vacation?  It can be confusing, but it's important to really understand the differences, at least conceptually, so that you not only book the right room for you, but recognize value and see through some promotional gimmicks.  We'll look at the differences between stateroom types  and  categories  and explain other things you'll run into, like guarantee rooms.

qm2 room types

Stateroom Types

We'll start here because well, this one is easy.  Stateroom types are the top of the chart if you're thinking about different staterooms hierarchically (a word which, pronouncing correctly may be a deciding factor in future CruiseHabit giveaways).  There are four basic stateroom types (and of course, some outliers).

Inside Staterooms

Yes, all staterooms are indoors, but this term refers to rooms which don't have a window or balcony (at least, they don't have a window or balcony facing the ocean - more on that later).  More often than not these types of rooms are the cheapest - but don't assume, as we've seen some cases where other categories are cheaper when supply and demand dictate such.  Often inside rooms have mirrors  and extra lights to keep you from feeling too closed in.  In recent years, Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Lines have introduced inside rooms with "virtual" portholes or balconies, which use large screens to display real-time views of the outside.  Several lines also have a selection of inside rooms which have port holes or windows facing interior sections of the ship.  Some inside rooms have the bed facing the door, while others have the bed sideways.

Ocean View Staterooms

These rooms (sometimes called "outside rooms") have some sort of window which looks out to the ocean.  Depending on the ship, deck, and other factors this could be a small porthole or two, a large window, or even a floor-to-ceiling window.  Similar to the different layouts of inside rooms, they may have the window(s) behind the beds or next to them - layouts vary.

two different ocean view room layouts on HAL

Verandah Staterooms

Call them what you will - verandahs, verandas, or balconies - these are the most common and popular rooms on modern ships.  It wasn't long ago that, for a number of reasons (some of which you can read about here ), a cruise ship might have only a handful of balconies, all located high on the ship.  Now, on some ships, over 95% of the rooms have balconies, and you'd have to work pretty hard to find anyone complaining about this.  Having a balcony gives you the option of enjoying some private deck space at any time, along with great views even when the doors are closed.  You could even use a GoPro to capture great sail-away videos using the proper mount .  Royal Caribbean's Oasis class ships have some verandah rooms that have outdoor balconies, but which don't face the ocean.  These "Neighborhood Verandahs" are unique, and if you're okay with not facing the ocean, can be a neat option.

a verandah stateroom on an MSC ship

Do you like painting with a broad brush?  Great - because the last room type we're covering is suites.  This can mean a lot of different things.  On modern ships suites pretty much always feature an ocean-facing balcony (we're sure we'll end up updating this with some exception - and RCI's Freedom Class "Sweets" don't count).  Suites can be similar to but slightly larger than verandah rooms, or they could be palatial multi-story areas with separate entranceways, multiple bedrooms, their own pianos, etc.  In addition to some extra space, suites often come with perks like exclusive lounges and restaurants, butler service, and many things which may cost other guests extra.  How do you differentiate the different types of suites?  I'm so glad you asked - keep reading to find out.

the suite life is nice, especially on Regent Seven Seas

Stateroom Categories

Discussing categories is important because many people confuse categories with types.  We mentioned above that there are four main stateroom types, but there can be dozens of categories even though so many rooms are so similar.  If you look on deck plans, or at the options when booking a cruise, categories are usually expressed as a letter-number combination, like A12, or V4 - it varies by cruise line.  There are some good reasons for this wide variety of options though, so let's review.

Imagine you're looking to book a verandah stateroom you may find the best price on a beautiful room and then find that it's really far forward (that's the front of the ship), and as such, may be a bit of a walk to some areas.  It's quite possible that the exact same shape, size, and style of room is available down the hall but more mid-ship, though at a higher cost.  These two rooms are the same stateroom type, but different categories.  You might also find that the rooms directly above or below these rooms are different categories, as often, the higher deck on which you find a room, the higher the category.  This can be important to think about if you're worried about seasickness, as we explain here , rooms midship and on a lower deck can be helpful.  Also consider if you want to consistently walk through a long corridoor each time you come or go.

how are cruise ship rooms numbered

The view you have can impact the stateroom category as well.  One of the most common reasons you'll find "lower category" rooms classified as such is because of what lines refer to as "obstructed views".  An ocean view room that has an unobstructed view of the water is usually in a higher category than a similar rooms which has it's view obstructed by a lifeboat or other equipment.  Obstructions could be directly in front of a window (or balcony) or off to the side, above, or below it.

Size & Shape

Not surprisingly, the size and shape of rooms can help determine their category.  Until you get into suites, the sizes will remain somewhat similar, but even an extra 20 square feet can be nice, as can certain layouts which allow for a bit more useful area vs dead space.

Window or Verandah Type

We previously mentioned that the exact type and number of windows which an ocean view stateroom has can vary, and this is true of verandah rooms as well.  You'll find rooms with larger windows to be different categories than those with smaller portholes.  The area below railings on some verandahs are glass, providing superior views, while others may have metal horizontal sections or be completely flat metal.  On some ships, there may be rather unconventional windows or doors, like those found in Infinite Verandah staterooms on Celebrity Edge series ships.

Infinite Verandah view on Celebrity Edge

Over the past few years some lines have created staterooms which may or may not be considered suites, may in fact be similar or identical to other verandah rooms, but which have some sort of perks.  A common example are rooms which allow free access to otherwise costly areas of the ship's spa.

"Weird Rooms"

You may have already guessed, but this is not a technical term - we'll call it a CruiseHabit term.  While many rooms on ships are nearly identical (in fact, they're modular), there are some rooms which are outliers based on engineering constraints and other factors.  Rooms all the way forward often feature angled walls with different layouts.  Verandah rooms at the aft are frequently sought after for fantastic views from their sometimes much longer balconies.  Other rooms are just plane different in the shape, such as rooms on the corner of ships.  In fact, these rooms often different because of multiple factors, such as size, shape, window type, and location, and more.

forward room on RCI Anthem

Okay, but what are guarantee rooms?

You may or may not have the option of booking a guarantee - and generally this is a guarantee within a type.  For example, an "Ocean View Guarantee" is a booking which means you won't pick your exact stateroom, but you're guaranteed to be assigned an ocean view room or better.  Some guests hear this and book a guarantee with a hope of an upgrade - and while that can happen, it's rare and you shouldn't bet on this.  Guarantees are usually priced quite a bit lower than a stateroom which you chose yourself, and they're a way for cruise lines to ensure they fill space while still charging other guests a premium for picking the room of their choice.

It's critical to remember that you're surrendering your choice to the cruise line - so if you book a guarantee and you're assigned a room far from where you'd like, or with an obstructed view, etc, you generally can't do anything about it (though if space is available, you  may  be able to get a random different room of the same type.  If you're okay with this risk, booking a guarantee can be a great way to save some money.

Watch Out For This 'Upgrade' Sales Technique

Now that you understand how cruise lines establish stateroom types and categories, you should also better understand a sales technique that is used quite often by many lines: the free upgrade.  Sounds great, right?  It can be - but don't get too excited.  These upgrades are usually for a category or two within the same type.  Usually, a line will offer a deal on a sailing where, for example, they'll offer the second lowest category for the same price as the lowest category.  Other times, for certain loyalty programs, guests will receive pricing for a room that is actually the price of the category below the room being priced.

This isn't a scam - it can be a nice perk, but don't get excited when you hear you're getting an upgrade thinking you're going from an inside to an ocean view.  You're likely going from an inside to a slightly nicer inside stateroom or an inside stateroom on deck two to an inside stateroom on deck five.

Final Statement on Staterooms

Ships today have many different stateroom categories, but if your new the to cruise game, it's the stateroom types you should focus on - but no matter what you do, don't put too much importance into picking a cabin.  While it's very subjective, we find nice staterooms nice to have, but not necessary - we just don't spend that much time in out stateroom, even when we have a particularly nice one.  If we can score a better stateroom (category or type) for a small price, then great - but often we're willing to take a more humble room and keep the savings for another cruise.  At the same time, we're frequent cruisers - so if you're looking at a once in a lifetime (or maybe just every few years) trip, then treat yourself with an ocean-facing balcony or even a suite.  The choice is yours.

Cruise Ship Cabin Guide: 15 Questions & Answers About Your Room

When it comes to the cruise ship, your cabin is your home away from home. It’s where you’ll sleep (of course), but it’s also where you’ll relax, get ready for the day, and it serves as your own little private spot away from the rest of the ship.

Cruise cabin overview

But there are a lot of little things that you may not know about a cruise cabin, or things that you should understand in order to make your vacation even better.

Below, we cover every aspect of your room while you sail. If you have even more questions, simply let us know in the comments below.

What Types of Cabins Are There? What Are the Differences?

On a modern cruise ship there is no shortage of different cabin types — especially when you get into high-end suites that can offer all sorts of different features, sizes, and amenities. However, for the most part cabins fall into five categories:

Inside : The lowest-priced cabins on the ship are the inside or interior cabins. These rooms are just what they sound like; they are on the inside of the ship meaning they don’t have any windows. While they have everything you need, inside cabins offer a budget-friendly way to get on the cruise ship (and get really dark with the lights out!).

Oceanview : Want to save money but also have a little light and be able to see the scenery? Oceanview cabins offer a room with a window. It can’t be opened, but will give you the chance to take in a view and not feel so enclosed while also not breaking the bank.

Balcony : Just as the name implies, with these rooms you get your own little balcony that allows you a spot to sit out, get some fresh air, and have your own private view. For many people a balcony is a must-have, but just know that they are more expensive than lower-tier cabins.

Suites : Suites won’t have the largest number of rooms on the ship, but they can have the largest variety. On the largest ships they can span everything from a cabin with a little extra space all the way to massive two-level penthouses on the highest levels of the ship. Expect to spend considerably more for the luxury.

Specialty Cabins : Some cruise lines are offering more and more specialty cabins (such as Carnival’s ‘Havana’ rooms) that fall into one of the categories above, but also have special features or perks. This can range everything from different styles than the rest of the ship to access to special lounges, restaurants, and pools.

How Big Is a Cruise Cabin?

how are cruise ship rooms numbered

If you’re thinking of a big hotel room on the ship, then temper your expectations (unless ponying up for one of the mega-suites on some ships). Rooms will vary in size, but usually they fall in the 160-200 square foot range. A 12’x12′ foot bedroom in your home is under 150 square feet, so it’s slightly larger than a normal bedroom.

But in that space you’ll have your bed, a sitting area, closet/storage, and the bathroom. Space is used efficiently, and it’s plenty of space for two adults for a week. Still, it can feel a bit small if you don’t keep the room organized or are in the room for an extended period of time.

How Large Are the Balconies on a Cruise Ship?

View of a cruise balcony

Like cabins, balconies can vary in size. However, most cruise balconies are around 40-60 square feet (roughly 4-6′ x 10′). It’s large enough for a couple of chairs and a table, but don’t think that you’ll have a massive spot to hangout, sunbathe, or do much more than just sit and enjoy the view.

Even so, having this extra space in addition to the enclosed cabin is a nice perk that can make your cabin feel much larger.

How Many People Can Sleep in a Cabin?

Despite the small size, cruise cabins can often sleep three to four people. There are traditionally two twin beds that can be separated or joined together to make one queen bed that sleeps two people.

In addition, sometimes there is a couch that can have the pillows removed to make a flat space to sleep another person. Some cabins have drop-down or fold-down beds to sleep multiple people as well.

Note that just because a cabin can sleep four people doesn’t mean it will do so comfortably. In our opinion most traditional cabins have enough space for two adults and one/two kids. If your kids are older or you have more adults, then going with a larger cabin like a suite or booking two rooms might be a better idea.

Do I Have to Sleep in the Same Bed as Someone Else?

how are cruise ship rooms numbered

If you are traveling with friends and walk into a cabin with one large bed, don’t worry. Cruise cabin beds can be separated or joined together. So a couple can have them together while friends traveling can take them apart.

Your cabin attendant can form the beds how you like. Just let them know if it’s not in your preferred configuration.

What’s the Bathroom Like?

how are cruise ship rooms numbered

For most people, let’s just say their bathroom in the cruise cabin will be… cozy. Bathrooms are small, with a sink and vanity, a toilet, and a shower.

The commode in the cabin is built into the wall (and actually seems to sit an inch or two higher than normal). Instead of a lever you push to flush, there is a button above the toilet for when you’re done.

Unless opting for a higher-end suite, there won’t be a tub. Instead you’ll have a shower (often circular, but not always) with a shower-head wand. Just know that the showers are small. Often you can simply extend your elbows out to your sides and be touching opposite walls of the space.

Within the shower you’ll have a dispenser for soap and shampoo. In addition, there is usually a retractable line that extends across the shower where you can hang clothing to dry.

Are There Accessible Cruise Cabins for Handicap/Disabled Passengers?

As you can likely tell, the traditional cruise cabin isn’t that accessible. There isn’t much room for wheelchairs, there are things like a high threshold to the bathroom, and no grab bars around toilets or in showers.

If you need more accessibility, don’t worry. On cruise ships there are a number of accessible cabins that you can book. These rooms are tailor-made for those needing accommodations that fit their needs.

Instead of high thresholds between the bathroom and cabin balcony, there are gentle inclines. Rooms feature more space to maneuver a wheelchair (including a larger balcony), and things like grab bars and shower seats to help passengers with these needs sail comfortably.

Can I Adjust the Temperature in the Room?

Most likely you can adjust your room temperature. Every room your sail will have some sort of thermostat. But to be honest, we’re not convinced that all of them actually adjust the temperature.

We’ve sailed in cabins where you adjust the thermostat and can instantly hear the air kick on. Other rooms we’ve sailed we have noticed absolutely no correlation between what we place the thermostat on and what the temperature in the room does.

In general, cruise cabins are cool, so you don’t have to worry about getting too hot. In our view, we’ve had issues with the room being too cold for our taste and not being able to warm things up a bit.

Is There a Refrigerator in the Cruise Cabin?

Yes, any cruise cabin will have a fridge in it. Just know that it’s more of a cooler than a refrigerator. Don’t expect it to get too cold, and it certainly won’t freeze anything.

Sometimes the fridge in the room doubles as a stocked mini-bar. These items aren’t free and you’ll have a price list posted nearby. If you want to use that space to keep items cool, you can let your cabin steward know and they can remove the items to give you space.

Is There a Safe in the Room?

Yes, any cruise cabin you book will have an in-room safe. This is normally in the closet area.

The safe is small, with a footprint about the size of a small laptop computer. Still, it’s enough space for things like passports, phones, cash, and cards. The safe is operated with a four-digit code that you create on your own. So you enter any four digits, press “close” or “lock” and your valuables are stored. Enter the code again to open the safe up.

What Amenities Are in a Cruise Cabin?

Your cabin may be small, but it comes with everything that you would need for several days at sea.

We’ve mentioned the refrigerator and cabin safe. As well, there is a television, an in-room hair dryer, vanity area with desk, outlet(s), and closets with hangers. In the bathroom you’ll have soap/shampoo provided, along with a line for drying clothes, and towels.

How Is TV in the Room?

Each cabin will come with a television. On newer ships the TV menus are usually interactive, providing you with a way to explore things going on around the ship, check your onboard account, and even watch pay-per-view movies.

However, when it comes to channel options, there’s a lot to be desired. In general, cruise ship cabins have only a handful of channels (around 20 or so). Of those, many will be the cruise line’s own channels, which show information about safety on the ship, shopping information for port, and a map of the ship’s location.

In addition, there are usually a few channels that show movies throughout the day and then a few regular channels you’re used to back home, like HGTV, CNN, Cartoon Network, and the like. There is also usually ESPN, but it’s an international version showing sporting events from around the world.

If you have a favorite program that you love to watch each week, chances are you WON’T be able to watch on the ship. Major sporting events (like NFL Sundays) are usually shown.

You can read more about TV on a cruise here .

Who Is the Cabin Steward? What Do They Do?

The first day that you arrive on your cruise, the Cabin Steward should introduce themselves. This person is the housekeeping service, and you’ll see them plenty. They typically come twice per day — once in the late morning and once in the evening — to clean, ready your room for the night, and restock anything you might need.

If you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask your room steward. From extra towels to separating beds, they can do it all.

Don’t need service twice a day (in our opinion, it’s too much!)? You can let the steward know or simply hang the “Do Not Disturb” tag on the door.

Is Room Service Available?

Don’t feel like changing out of your pajamas for breakfast? Just want to eat a meal without having to fight through other passengers? You’ll be happy to know that room service is available for your cabin.

You’ll normally find a menu somewhere in the room (check the vanity/desk area) that has the full listing of what’s available and the number to call. Room service is available around the clock, but know that there is generally a charge. It’s also customary to tip the person bringing the food a few bucks.

When you are done with your meal, you can stack them in the cabin or place them outside your door. Either way, the room steward will take them away for you when done.

How Much Storage Space Is There?

Cabin storage space

For the size of the cabin, there is lots of storage space. First there are usually large closets that feature shelves, drawers, along with hangers. So no matter if you’re wanting to put away folded clothes or hang up nice items so they don’t get wrinkled, you’ll have a spot.

Then there are other storage spaces, such as under the bed and the vanity. Cruise bed frames are metal and sit up off the floor with lots of empty space underneath. It’s the perfect spot to put empty suitcases or other large bulky items so they are completely out of the way.

If you run into a situation where you think your room doesn’t have enough storage, chances are you overpacked.

What Should I Bring to Make a Cabin More Comfortable?

Over years of cruising, there are a few cabin items that we’ve found can make your cruise more comfortable. These items aren’t must-haves, but you’ll often be happy you brought them.

Outlet Adapter : We all carry a lot of electronics these days, but many ships (especially older ones) may only have one or two outlets to plug things in. That’s why we like to bring an outlet adapter that plugs into one spot and provides multiple places to plug in chargers, hair straighteners, and anything else you might need. Just make sure that whatever you bring doesn’t have a surge protector as they are not allowed.

Fan : If you’re the sort of person that needs airflow or the white noise provided by a fan, then you’ll want to pack one. Cabins don’t have ceiling fans, and while the air does flow from the vent, it does so pretty soft and quiet. Packing a small fan may make you more comfortable and sleep better.

Shoe Organizer : One great idea is packing a cheap plastic shoe organizer. These can hang over the bathroom door and provide a ton of little pockets to store items. There’s lots of storage in a cruise cabin, but an organizer puts all those small items in one place and within easy reach.

Good Cabin overview, I did not see the handicapped cabin category. On carnival that can be fully accessible to single side (automatic door, larger floor space, flat floor into bathroom, shower bench and grab bars, and more room getting into bed).

The picture of the bathroom is on the new Mardi Gras right? I have not been on there, that is really small I see and hear. Most bathrooms on older carnival ships are larger, with room from the toilet to the shower…lol.

Great comment. Will look to add some info on accessible cabins.

Cruise cabins and suites

Cruise ship rooms, floor plans, photos.

CruiseMapper's cabin and suites section allows you to explore cruise staterooms by ship. Each page provides extensive information on all passengers accommodations on a particular vessel, including floor plans, room types and categories (grades used upon booking), cabin sizes, deck location. Also provided is an extensive review of all ticket price inclusive en-suite amenities, along with furniture details and additional / bonus perks (if available).

CruiseMapper logo

Here you will find brief descriptions by category of all stateroom types that can be found on cruise ship deck plans . You will find more information and many useful tips on staterooms at our best and worst cabins article. Here you can search for a particular ship (via the above search bar) or you can skip the introduction (explanations) and go down directly to our list of large passenger ships' cabin pages .

Cruise staterooms booking rates are usually based on deck location. Lower-deck accommodations are the cheapest. Midship rooms cost more. Balcony staterooms and Suites located aft or forward are the most expensive. Most cruise companies (especially those with large-sized vessels in the fleets) divide the main cabin types into subcategories. These grades are marked with numbers (like for balcony cabins - B1, B2, B3, B4) and are displayed on the deck layouts with different colors.

Cruise ship suites

Cruise suite accommodations are premium grades cabins. They are usually larger in comparison to balcony staterooms and feature more amenities. As a rule, suites have a full-size bathtub, larger shower, bigger closets and balcony (some have 2 private balconies). Amenities include coffee makers, premium sound systems, large-size TVs, complimentary butler service.

Loft Suites (aka Duplex Suites)

Loft Suites are "duplex suites" (on two levels) and available on the world's largest passenger ships of Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class and Quantum-class. The following layout is of Harmony of the Seas and its largest accommodation - the Royal Loft Suite.

Grand Suite

Twin beds in this type of cabin can be joined in a king bed. Grand Suites have also a double sofa bed and large private balcony, sitting area with 2-armchairs and a coffee table, desk, dressing area with vanity, walk-in closet, safe box, TV, phone, refrigerator, mini-bar, private bath with whirlpool tub and shower, patio chair and table, balcony lounge chair, pillow menu, bathrobes, hairdryer. See below the magnificent Oceania Marina ship's Owner Suite plan.

Captain Suite

Captains Suite accommodations have a huge 220 ft2 (20,5 m2) separate bedroom, while the living area is sized 290 ft2 (27 m2). There are 2 upper beds and a sofa bed, private bathroom with whirlpool hot tub and glass shower, safe, TV and phone, mini-bar, bathrobes, hairdryer.

A table and 3 patio chairs are on the balcony.

Owners Suite

Owner's Suites are some of the most luxurious accommodations at sea. They usually feature two separate bedrooms, private balcony (with luxury lounge furniture, even dining area and hot tub), living room (with sofa bed), luxury bathroom (with whirlpool bathtub and separate shower), second bathroom (WC), dining room, dressing area. Some Owner's Suites (like NCL's) can accommodate up to 10 passengers when connected to an adjacent Suite.

Ocean Suite

OS stands for "Ocean Suite" and category SS is "Spa Suite", recently changed to Junior Suite. These cabins have: twin beds that convert to king, sitting area with armchair and coffee table, sofa, dressing area with vanity, large balcony, wall safe, 2 big closets, mini-bar, refrigerator, private whirlpool bath with tub and shower, television and phone, balcony lounge chair, patio chair and table, pillow menu, bathrobes, hairdryer.

2-Bedroom Mozart Suite (largest stateroom on a riverboat)

World's largest accommodation found on a riverboat is Riverside Mozart 's French Balcony Suite. The vessel has two such accommodations, each sized 885 ft2 / 82 m2. Must be noted, that the stateroom is combined with an adjacent French Balcony cabin.

Penthouse Suite

Penthouse Suites have a twin beds configuration (beds can convert to queen). The other features are a large balcony, dressing area with vanity, sitting area with armchair and coffee table, wall safe, mini bar, private bath with whirlpool tub and shower, television and phone, refrigerator, bathrobes and hairdryer. Some cabins are without whirlpool tub, sofa or coffee table.

Balcony staterooms

Most balcony cruise ship cabins feature floor-ceiling sliding glass doors leading to a private step-out veranda. The balcony also is furnished with a table and pair of chairs/loungers. Standard balconies are separated by dividers. As sizes, balcony cabins on cruise ships vary, with those on Princess and NCl ships being among the smallest compared to other big-ship lines. In our cruise deck plans, we also list room sizes and the size of the balcony. Balcony – Apart from the balcony they can offer You twin beds that can be converted to King-size bed. Balconies also provide sitting area with chair and coffee table and private bath with shower, as well as closet/wardrobe, electronic safe box, mini bar, television and phone, sofa, bathrobes, hairdryer. Most verandas are between 30-60 ft2 ( approx 3-6 m2). Below are shown the layouts of the Anthem ship's Deluxe and Accessible balcony cabins.

Premium Balcony

Premium Balcony cabins also have twin beds that convert to King-size, their wraparound balcony enfolds the stateroom. Balcony's windows are often floor-ceiling and wall-to-wall.

Cove Balcony Staterooms

Cove balconies, unlike Balconies, have two patio chairs and a table. The rest of the stuff is identical. First of all-balcony, and again twin beds that convert to king, sofa, private bath with shower, safe, closet, mini bar, television and phone, sitting area with chair and coffee table, bathrobes and hairdryer.

Cove Balcony rooms are CCL-Carnival's specialty, available on some of the "Fun Ships", and are interesting because they are located on lower decks (thus closer to waterline).

Oceanview staterooms

Oceanview cabins: as sizes are similar to Interior staterooms on cruise ships, but each of them has a Porthole or normal window (both types do not open). Their window sizes also vary by line and ship. On some ocean ships and some luxury river ships, such staterooms feature floor-ceiling windows. Oceanview rooms' window sizes are usually 4x3 ft (1,2x0,9 m). As furniture, Oceanview cruise cabins have twin beds that convert to King-size, sofa, TV and phone, sitting area, safe, mini bar, private bath with shower, and also a washroom with sink and a junior tub, bathrobes and a hairdryer and of course a picture window. You should take a look at the cruise ship deck plans again as Cabins of 5A category have two porthole windows. Unlike deluxe, there is no washroom with sink and junior tub. Below are the layouts of Ovation of the Seas Oceanview cabins (categories standard, large, and superior).

Deluxe Oceanview

These cabins have no balconies but still can offer a marvelous view through their picture window as well as twin beds that convert to King-size. However, beds in Category 6N can't be joined (to King) and sleeps max 5 people.

Other amenities include sofabed, TV, phone, seating, safe, mini-bar, a bathroom with shower, a washroom (with junior tub), bathrobes, hairdryer.

Scenic Oceanview

The interior is the same - twin beds convertible to King-size, picture window, sofa, TV, phone, seating, safe, mini-bar, bath with shower, washroom with sink and junior tub, bathrobes, hairdryer.

The difference is that Scenic Oceanviews are larger.

Inside staterooms

Inside cruise ship cabins' best feature is their price - you book them with the line's cheapest rates available. These cruise accommodations don't offer window views. Still, on some of the newest cruise ships of Royal Caribbean and Disney, there are categories Interior staterooms with a "virtual window", which is a large LED screen displaying outside cam views. The screen doesn't have TV functions.

On some Carnival ships, there are Inside cabins with a "French Balcony" (with opening glass doors). Also, some "interior staterooms" are actually Oceanview (with a non-opening window), but since their views are obstructed, they are booked as Interior. On Royal Caribbean ships, some Inside cabins have a window looking out to the ship's interior promenade (street)

Inside cruise cabins are fitted with twin beds (convertible to King or Queen), private bathroom (shower), sitting area. Next are shown the layouts of Interior rooms on Harmony OTS .

Small Interior Stateroom (as the name implies) is the least spacious standard cabin category on cruise ships. These cabins have two beds – (upper and lower), private bath (WC/shower), a small sitting area.

Single cabins (Studios)

Single occupancy staterooms could be either Inside or Balcony. Some river cruise lines even offer single suites (booking with single occupancy rates). The most famous liner having plenty of single cabins (designed specifically for solo travelers) is Norwegian Epic .

This huge vessel has a total of 128 "Studios".

Next are shown layouts of Quantum OTS single-occupancy cabins (balcony and interior).

Connecting cabins (for large families)

The next layout shows RCI's "Family Connected Junior Suite" plan ( Quantum OTS ). Ship's main cabin grades (Balcony, Oceanview, Inside) are all combined here into a 10-person "Family Suite". The layout also shows the exact positioning of furniture, 3 baths (1 with hot tub), large seating area, 2 double-sofabeds, 2 connecting balconies.

How to choose cabins on cruise ships?

If you are planning a cruise, booking a cabin is certainly as important as picking up the cruise line (brand) or the boat. Before you take that decision, consider some issues related to your own personality and the other people traveling with you.

  • The first important thing you have to be honest with your conscious is whether you can get seasick .
  • Secondly, what type of person you are and what exactly do you intend to do onboard? Are you a party type or you just would like to spend several calm days at sea, away from the office jungle on land. Would you enjoy the pool with its all opportunities for contacts or you would rather have a rest lying at a balcony?
  • No matter the stateroom type, it could still be noisy or make you seasick. The more central and lower position your cabin has, the more stable it is.
  • In case you and the rest of the family members / friends are thin or you just don't intend to spend too much time in the cabin, you can pick a small one. Usually, staterooms are able to house no more than 4 people. Two passengers pay full fares and the other receive discounted rates.
  • If you need stateroom for 4+ passengers, connecting cabins are the best option, and it will cost you less than a suite. Bathtub-fitted cabins are not so many per vessel. All cruise deck plans show such information (bathtub, sofabed, double bed, bunk beds, etc).

Noise issues - which cabins on the ship to avoid?

If you are a party type and louder sounds are not bothering, everything would be OK. If you organize a family voyage, however, you should look for a cabin away from the noisiest areas in the cruise ship deck plans. The first thing to look for in the cruise ship plan is the engine room location. Along with the noises, there are also vibrations.

Staterooms under discos, sport playgrounds, gym centers are usually very noisy. Cabins under Lido Deck (aka Pool Deck) are also among those to avoid. The buffet restaurant on this deck generates noises from moving tables and chairs and tableware. Staircases are also very noisy.

Take a good look at the cruise ship deck plan - room location is crucial!

Cabin's deck location is of great importance. Lower and more central-positioned accommodations are more stable. However, "cool cabins" are usually on higher decks, which means spending more money won't necessarily save you from seasickness.

Stern cabins (aft) have the largest balconies. Forward suites provide the same view as from the Navigation Bridge (wheelhouse). Some cabins are with limited / obstructed seaview due to lifeboats or other equipment.

Guarantee staterooms - take your chance!

If you are not set on selecting something particular and location is not a priority, you should not investigate the cruise ship deck plan so cautiously. The so-called ''guarantee'' cabin grades can turn to be among the best booking options. The "guarantee stateroom" booking allows you to pick up a category, not a cabin. In case the category is sold out you'll be proposed a higher category lodging. The first cabins to be booked are both the cheapest and the most expensive ones, be aware when you choose to test your luck. However, it could be a bit risky so it's more reasonable to get back to the cruise ship deck plans.

Shipboard facilities

If want to cruise with your children you'd better book a stateroom close to kids entertainment facilities. Cruise ship deck plans can once again help you to choose from the many opportunities created to meet passengers' requirements. Spa cabins are recently available for instance. Passengers get free access to the steam room and other connected facilities. These cabins are of course close to the SPA and you can move between in your bathrobe only.

NCL's The Haven and MSC's Yacht Club accommodations are located within an exclusive complex and offer ''ship within ship'' amenities and services. Passengers (who can afford them) enjoy private sundecks with swimming pools and jacuzzis and exclusive facilities like restaurants, bar lounges, gyms and spas.

Prefabricated cruise ship cabin

On May 24, 2016, a new "Lightweight Composite Cabin" design was unveiled in Southampton, England. The innovation was funded by the UK Government. Involved in the cabin's designing, engineering, manufacturing and furbishing were the companies Carnival UK ( Carnival Corporation 's subsidiary), Gurit Ltd (global composite materials supplier), Lloyd's Register Group Ltd (technical / business services, maritime classification company), PE Composites Ltd (composite designer / manufacturer), Trimline Ltd (marine interior refurbishment specialist) and the University of Southampton.

The new modular cabin prototype is half the weight of a typical cruise room. It also fully complies with the FTP Code's requirements (International Code for the Application of Fire Test Procedures). Reducing the ship's topdecks weight is an important issue for naval architects as the trend for building large-capacity cruise vessels continues. The new (prefabricated) module's halved weight opens up opportunities for adding more passenger rooms to newbuild ships, without adding to the ship's DWT weight.

Note: The following list of cruise lines cabins (per ship) includes only CruiseMapper's largest companies' fleets and only ocean-going vessels. For all other vessels (including small-fleet shipping companies , cruiseferries and riverboats ) use the search box at page top .

How Does Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines Number Their Decks?

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines is widely recognized for it’s luxurious and innovative ships that offer an unparalleled experience at sea. From world-class cuisine to thrilling entertainment options, each vessel is meticulously designed to cater to the diverse preferences of it’s passengers. One intriguing aspect of Royal Caribbean's ships is the way they number their decks, creating a systematic and intuitive layout that ensures guests can easily navigate the various amenities and facilities.

How Are the Decks Numbered on a Cruise Ship?

On Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, decks are usually numbered from bottom to top, starting with Deck 1 and going as high as Deck 20 or more, depending on the size of the ship. However, it’s important to note that not all decks are accessible to passengers. The lower decks, such as Deck 1, are typically reserved for crew members and contain various operational spaces, machinery rooms, and storage areas.

Passengers usually board the ship on Deck 4 or Deck 5, which are usually the main embarkation decks. These decks are equipped with reception areas and have easy access to important facilities such as the main dining rooms, bars, shops, and the ships atrium. They’re designed to provide convenient pathways for passengers to navigate the ship upon boarding.

As you make your way up the decks, youll find various public areas like lounges, theaters, pools, and specialty restaurants. These decks are often the main hubs of activity and entertainment where passengers can relax, enjoy live performances, or participate in various onboard activities organized by the cruise line.

The higher-numbered decks usually offer premium amenities such as exclusive suites, spa facilities, fitness centers, and sometimes even outdoor areas with private pools or sun decks. These decks are often considered more luxurious and offer a more premium experience to passengers who choose to book cabins on these levels.

The Types of Cabins Available on Different Decks and Their Amenities.

When it comes to Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, the decks on their ships are typically numbered in a consistent manner. Each deck is assigned a number, and the types of cabins available can vary from deck to deck. The amenities provided in these cabins can also differ depending on the deck.

One peculiar observation aboard the grand ‘Allure of the Seas’ cruise ship is the absence of a 13th deck. Following the pattern established by many other major cruise lines, the 14th floor takes it’s place, leaving travelers questioning the motive behind this deliberate omission. This intriguing detail has sparked numerous theories, contributing to the mystique surrounding these floating behemoths.

Is There a Deck 13 on Allure of the Seas?

Step aboard the Allure of the Seas cruise ship and youll notice something peculiar: theres no deck This isn’t an isolated incident. In fact, some of the worlds biggest cruise lines have made it a policy to exclude the 13th deck from their ships. Instead, youll find deck 14 stacked neatly on top of deck This omission has sparked a flurry of conspiracy theories and speculation about the reasons behind this decision.

One plausible explanation for the absence of deck 13 is superstition. The number 13 has long been associated with bad luck in many cultures around the world. This belief, known as triskaidekaphobia, has led some cruise companies to take precautions and remove the 13th deck altogether. By eliminating the number, they hope to avoid any potential negative connotations and ensure a smooth sailing experience for their guests.

Another theory revolves around customer preferences. Cruise lines strive to create a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for their passengers, and they understand that some people may feel uneasy about staying on the 13th deck. By removing this floor from their numbering system, they cater to these concerns and potentially attract a larger customer base.

Many hotels, office buildings, and residential complexes also skip the 13th floor in their numbering. This practice has become so commonplace that it’s almost expected in certain industries.

While the omission of deck 13 may seem like a small detail, it’s undoubtedly sparked the imaginations of conspiracy theorists. Some believe that cruise lines are hiding sinister secrets on the phantom 13th deck, ranging from secret government experiments to supernatural occurrences. However, it’s important to approach these speculations with a healthy dose of skepticism, as there’s no credible evidence to support such claims.

The Experience and Amenities Offered on Deck 14 and How It Compares to Other Decks on the Ship.

As you navigate through the winding hallways of a cruise ship, you may find yourself wondering about the numbering system used to identify each room. Unlike a standardized layout, cruise ships often employ a clever numbering technique to help passengers determine their position on the ship. Typically, room numbers commence at the front of the vessel and progressively rise as you venture towards the aft, enabling a convenient wayfinding system for passengers.

How Are Cruise Ship Rooms Numbered?

Cruise ship room numbers can be a bit confusing for first-time cruisers, as there’s no universal standard for how they’re numbered. However, on many ships, you can usually determine whether you’re walking forward or aft based on the room numbers. Typically, the numbers begin at the front of the ship and increase as you move towards the aft.

For example, if you’re standing at the front of the ship and your room number is 200, then you can infer that you’re closer to the back of the ship. On the other hand, if your room number is 800, you can deduce that you’re located towards the front.

For instance, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines has a different approach. They use a combination of letters and numbers to label their rooms. The letters represent the deck level, while the numbers indicate the specific room.

In Royal Caribbeans case, the room numbers begin with the deck level letter and are followed by a two-digit number. The deck level letters usually start with an “M” for the lowest passenger deck and increase alphabetically as you move up in the ship. So, for example, a room numbered M201 indicates that it’s on the lowest deck, while an A201 would be on a higher deck.

While there’s no universal standard, knowing the general pattern of room numbers can give you a sense of where you’re located in relation to the ships bow and stern. Just keep in mind that each cruise line may have it’s unique system, so it’s best to familiarize yourself with the specific numbering conventions of the ship youll be sailing on.

Understanding the Layout of a Cruise Ship Based on Room Numbers

In order to establish clear and standardized navigation, boat decks are systematically numbered. The primary deck, also known as the main deck, is assigned the number “1”. Subsequent decks located below the main deck are assigned ascending numbers (2, 3, and so on). Conversely, any decks situated above the main deck are preceded by a zero and subsequently assigned numerical values (01, 02, and so forth).

How Are Boat Decks Numbered?

When it comes to numbering boat decks, there’s a consistent system followed by most cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. The system begins with the main deck, which is always designated as deck number “1.”. This is the lowest deck on the ship and is usually where passengers embark and disembark from the ship.

Moving upwards from the main deck, all subsequent decks below are numbered sequentially higher than “1.”. This means that the deck right above the main deck would be deck number “2,” followed by deck number “3,” and so on. This numbering system helps passengers easily identify which deck they’re on and navigate their way around the ship.

On the other hand, all levels above the main deck are designated with a zero preceding the number. For example, the deck above deck number “1” would be labeled as deck number “01,” followed by deck number “02,” and so forth. This zero serves as a visual indicator that these decks are higher in elevation compared to the decks below the main deck.

It simplifies the task of finding specific locations such as restaurants, entertainment venues, or their staterooms.

Deck Planning and Navigation for Passengers: Provide Tips and Advice on How Passengers Can Use Deck Numbering to Navigate Around a Ship Effectively and Find Specific Locations.

  • Take note of the deck numbering system on the ship.
  • Find a ship’s map or directory to familiarize yourself with the layout.
  • Use the deck number to easily navigate to different areas of the ship.
  • Pay attention to the signage on each deck to locate specific locations.
  • Remember that odd numbers usually indicate the starboard side, while even numbers indicate the port side.
  • Take elevators or staircases located in central areas of the ship to access different decks.
  • If you get lost, don’t hesitate to ask a crew member for assistance.
  • Consider taking a guided tour or attending orientation sessions to better understand the ship’s layout.

How Are Decks Numbered on a Cruise Ship?

By Michael Ferguson

When you’re on a cruise ship, you’ll often hear people talking about deck numbers and which area of the ship is located on which deck. It can be confusing to keep track of exactly how decks are numbered on a cruise ship, so here’s an explanation of the basics.

Deck Numbering System

Cruise ships have a unique way of numbering their decks. On most ships, all the public areas such as restaurants, pools, and entertainment venues are located on the upper decks (the higher number decks). The lower decks are typically reserved for cabins and service areas like laundry and storage.

The first deck of a ship is usually the “promenade deck,” which is where all the public areas such as stores and restaurants are located. The promenade deck is typically numbered either 4 or 5 depending on the size of the ship.

Upper Decks

The uppermost deck is usually referred to as “the top deck” or “the lido deck.” This is usually where most of the pools and lounges are located on modern ships. This level will typically be numbered in the 8s or 9s depending on the size of the ship.

Middle Decks

In between these two levels are what are referred to as “middle decks.” These decks usually contain most of the cabins, but may also have some public areas such as casinos or showrooms depending on what type of cruise line it is. Middle decks will typically be numbered in between 6 and 8 depending on how many total decks there are in total.

Whether you are a seasoned cruiser or a curious enthusiast, understanding the deck numbering system can greatly enhance your cruising experience. In this article, we will delve into the intricacies of cruise ship deck numbering, providing you with valuable insights and knowledge. So, let’s embark on this fascinating journey together.

Cruise ships are massive floating cities, and to navigate them efficiently, a well-defined deck numbering system is essential. Each deck carries a specific designation and serves different purposes, from accommodation to dining, entertainment, and recreational facilities. Understanding how these decks are numbered will allow you to navigate the ship with ease and locate your desired destinations effortlessly. So, let’s dive into the details and explore the world of cruise ship deck numbering.

The Deck Numbering System: What You Need to Know

🔍 To understand how cruise ship decks are numbered, let’s start with the basics. The deck numbering system typically follows a logical pattern, with the main passenger decks denoted by numbers, starting from the lowest deck upwards. The numbering may vary slightly among different cruise lines, but the general principles remain the same.

The lower decks are usually assigned lower numbers, such as Deck 1 or Deck A, while the upper decks have higher numbers. However, some cruise lines may use alphabets to distinguish between different decks instead of numbers. For example, Deck A may be followed by Deck B, Deck C, and so on.

🕵️‍♀️ The purpose of using alphanumeric codes or numbers for deck designation is to make it easier for passengers and crew members to navigate the ship. This system allows everyone to easily understand and locate specific areas on the ship based on the assigned deck number or letter. It also helps in emergency situations, as each deck has designated emergency assembly points and evacuation procedures.

📌 It’s important to note that not all decks on a cruise ship are accessible to passengers. Some decks are dedicated to crew members, machinery, or storage areas, and might not be open to the public. However, most cruise ships have designated public decks where passengers can enjoy various amenities and activities.

🌍 The location of specific facilities and amenities on a cruise ship can also be determined by the deck number. For example, restaurants, theaters, and shopping areas are commonly found on higher decks, while cabins and lounges are spread across different decks. Understanding the deck numbering system can help you plan your activities and easily locate the areas you wish to explore on the ship.

📝 Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that some cruise ships may have named decks instead of or in addition to numbered decks. These named decks often have themes or reflect the ship’s branding. While the named decks may not follow the numerical order, they are typically well-marked and easily identifiable.

⚓ Now that you have a basic understanding of how cruise ship decks are numbered, let’s take a closer look at the specific details regarding the what, who, when, where, why, and how of this system.

Is Port or Starboard the Left or Right Side of a Ship?

Simply put, a ship's “port” side is the left side.

“Starboard” is the right side of any ship or water vessel. But, unfortunately, it’s not because it has stars! (Although that would make it much easier to identify, right?)

So how are you going to remember this information? And what are the historical origins of both words?

Luckily, we have helpful tips and tricks below, so you won’t forget which is which. And you’ll be wiser to know why seafarers have used these terms for centuries!

Port vs Starboard Side: Helpful Tips and Tricks to Remember Which is Left and Right

To correctly identify the left and right sides, you must ensure you’re facing the ship's front (the bow); otherwise, you can easily mix up port and starboard.

After you make sure you’re facing the bow, you can use the three tips and tricks below to help you recall what starboard is vs. port. Of course, it is easiest to figure out where the bow is while the boat moves, and you can see it out a window or porthole.

However, many ships are well labeled like a good map no matter where you are on board, so you always know where the bow or aft (back) are.

(Not all ships are well labeled, but some are. If you’re on a mega-ship, it could be harder to figure this out if the boat is at a standstill and there isn’t great signage. But you’ll be able to figure it out on a stationary small cruise ship, like a river cruise ship , without much effort as you quickly get to know the boat.)

Here are our three useful ways to remember port vs. starboard:

1. Use The Letters of Each Word To Help You Remember Port vs. Starboard

Port letters.

“Port” has four letters, as does “left.” Therefore, left = port.

We explain later in this article that ships used to port , or dock , on their left side. “Dock” also has four letters in the word, just like “port” does. That’s a great way to remember the association between all the words.

ship/boat → dock → left → port

They all have four letters!

Starboard Letters

Starboard has two “R’s” in it, so you could think, “right, right.” when you say the word.

2. Notice the Colors used for Decorating the Cruise Ship

Princess Cruises decorate their cruise ships' port and starboard sides using different color carpets on decks with guest staterooms. Red or blue carpets are the colors they use.

So, for example, if you’re staying in an even number stateroom, you’ll simply have to remember if the carpet on your side is blue or red. (We were in an even number room on the starboard side, which was blue.)

You can decode what side of the ship you’re on using this method as you walk through the hallways with staterooms. (That is if you’re on a deck with staterooms only. Otherwise, the carpet on other decks of Princess Cruise ships, like where the Princess spa and restaurants are, don’t have guest cabins is not meaningful in terms of identifying the sides of the cruise ship.)

Red is the port side's international color (particularly when it comes to lights on the water for navigation), so you’ll most often see that color used to identify the left side of a cruise ship.

Red carpet with a floral print on Majestic Princess cruise ship - helps a guest identify port vs starboard sides of the boat.

How do you remember “port” and the color red? Simple! Port is a kind of wine that also has four letters.

So whenever you think of port, associate it with left (which also has four letters) and wine (which makes you think “red”).

Port → left

Port → wine = red

This trick does not work if the carpet everywhere is one color. Or if the carpet in public areas isn’t particularly color-coded. But it does work if it is!

Use The Room Numbers

Also, cruise ship cabins will often be numbered even on one side of the ship and odd on the other, which can help you identify which side of the boat you’re on or need to be on.

Granted, this means you’ll have to take note of the even vs. odd numbers when you first get to know the ship. But if you learn it on day 1, it could help you for the duration of your sailing.

Port vs Starboard – Why Don’t They Just Call them Left and Right?

For most people, we would assume the words “right” and “left” are easier for identifying the sides of a cruise ship.

However, the nautical world uses unique terminology for a reason. It’s all tied to history, which dates back to the Vikings.

The History Behind Why is the Right Side of a Cruise Ship Called Starboard

The complete truth is partially mysterious, but there are a couple of theories about how a ship's right side became known as starboard.

Theory 1: Original Ship Steering

The first potential reason is related to the steering of original ships. Before ships had rudders, humans steered boats with the help of boards or oars.

These steering boards had holes that the oars would go through. Most sailors were right-handed (lefties remain a minority population) – thus, the right-hand side of ships became known as the “steerboard,” where most of the steering and maneuvering took place.

Theory 2: Viking Word for Steer

A secondary reason linked to naming the right side of a ship “starboard” is thanks to the Vikings.

Vikings named the sides of their ship boards. Like most sailors, they steered from the right side of the ship.

The Viking word for steering sounded similar to “star.” Hence, this is how we got “starboard.”

Theory 3: Anglo-Saxon Terminology

The final reason the right side of a ship is called starboard can be traced back to the Anglo-Saxons, who their invading neighbors, the Vikings, may have influenced.

The Anglo-Saxons called the right side of their ships “steerboard,” which meant “steering side.”

The Three Starboard Naming Theories

So there you have it!

Starboard was born from history and likely appropriated by someone who spoke English and turned “steerboard” into “starboard.”

What is the History Behind Why the Left Side of a Cruise Ship Called “Port?”

The left side of a boat grew to be called “port” simply because ships used to dock (or port) on the left side.

Historically, ships needed to dock on the left side so that the steering side (starboard) was open to the water, which would allow a sailor to steer the ship in and out of port.

Initially, in Old English, the name for the left side of a ship was a word that sounded like “backboard.” This was because the helmspersons always had their backs to the left side.

Eventually, as shipping and trade progressed, the backboard became known as “laddebord,” which meant “loading side.” All goods were loaded where the ship docked in port: the left side.

The Vikings also called the left side a similar name: “larboard.” This had the same meaning as laddebord or backboard: the loading side.

However, during more modern nautical communications, the word “larboard” sounded too similar to “starboard.” Thus, the left side of a ship needed a more distinctive name.

This is why we have the word “port” today for a ship’s left side. We can all agree that “port” and “starboard” are two very different sounding words, which is essential for communication at sea, especially between captains.

Why Are Port And Starboard Lights Different Colors?

You may have noticed that cruise ships and other assorted boats use red and green lights for navigation and direction.

The port side uses red lights.

The starboard side uses green lights.

This color system helps other vessels identify what direction another ship is traveling in and whether it is moving away or approaching.

Red and green lights are used similarly to traffic lights. For example, if a ship encounters another vessel on the water, it will flash a green light if it’s safe for the other boat to pass.

If red flashes, it is signaling to the other ship that it should slow down or stop.

What are the Other Sides or Parts of a Cruise Ship Called?

Along with starboard (right side) and port (left side), cruise ships also have a bow and aft.

“Bow” identifies the front of the ship, while “aft” is the back. So always make sure you’re facing the bow when attempting to determine a cruise ship's port and starboard (the right and left) sides.

Decide what type of cabin you would like.

There are four main types (categories) of cabins: Inside cabins: These cabins are usually the lowest price. Typically they will have twin beds that convert to a queen size, a private bath with a shower, a closet for hanging clothes, a dresser and a television. These cabins do not have a window to let natural light in. To help give the occupants an impression of having a view, some inside cabins have a virtual view. That means there is a large screen that displays outside views. Expect to pay $100 to $200 a night for an inside cabin. Exception: Carnival has several cabins which are classified as inside cabins but actually have a french glass door which allows light into the room (no balcony, but the door can be opened). Carnival also has some cabins that have a window, but because the window has an obstructed view (that means there is a railing or object in the way) it is listed as an inside cabin. Royal Caribbean has some cabins that have a window but look out over an inside promenade area. These are called "promenade staterooms". Oceanview cabins: These cabins are like inside cabins but usually have a port hole or window. A window is much more desirable than a porthole because the porthole can be difficult to look through. Windows will vary in size and some cabins will even have full floor to ceiling windows. Most window sizes for oceanview cabins are about 4 feet by 3 feet. Be sure to read the cabin description carefully to determine if there is a different type of window. Windows can not be opened. Expect to pay $150 to $250 a night for an oceanview. Balcony cabins: These cabins are better, and more expensive, than oceanview cabins because they typically have full glass sliding doors that lead to a balcony. The balcony allows fresh air and light into the cabin and also may have additional chairs or loungers. Balconies tend to be separated by dividers which give some sense of privacy, but be aware that most balconies are not fully private and can be viewed from above or by the cabin next to you. Balconies on new Norwegian Cruise Line ships and Princess Cruise Line ships tend to be smaller and more narrow than balconies on other ships. We will list balcony size in the cabin description.  Carnival offers what is called a "Cove Balcony" on some of their ships. These balconies are very popular because they sit lower on the ship (closer to the water line). Expect to pay $200 to $400 a night for an balcony cabin. Suite: A suite is a premium cabin on a cruise ship. It is usually much larger than a balcony and includes more perks. Suites typically have a full bath tub, large shower, larger closets, larger balcony, larger TV, and butler services. Expect to pay $400 to over $1,000 a night for a suite.

Decide where you would like the cabin located.

Cabins are priced based on location on the ship. Typically cabins on lower decks are less expensive. Typically cabins midship (in the middle part of a deck) cost higher. Balcony and Suite cabins on the very aft of the ship can also be more expensive than other cabins. In order to set the pricing many cruise lines will divide each cabin type into sub categories. For example a balcony cabin may be divided into sub categories such as B1, B2, B3, B4. In most cases the cabin size and features in a sub category is the exactly the same. The only difference is usually the location of the cabin on the ship. Please look for the notes on the category descriptions to determine if there is a difference in size or features between the subcategories. Exception: Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines will also use sub categories to distinquish between how many occupants the cabin will sleep. Therefore a cabin that can sleep up to 4 people will be a different sub category from a cabin that sleeps only 2 people. You can also use our drag deck feature to determine if your cabin is in a good location. Cabins are best located when they are next to, above or below other cabins. As a rule of thumb avoid booking a cabin under a public area or kitchen. If you are looking for a balcony cabin, please be aware that on many ships the cabins that are below the pool deck may also be shaded by a roof overhang from the deck above. You can also use our drag deck feature to determine if there is a overhang. TIP: Many of the cruise ships are so large now and have so many floors that elevators are required to get to the public areas from your stateroom. But during peak times you could be waiting awhile to get on an elevator. If you pick a stateroom near the top or near the lower decks of the ship you may find a much better experience getting around. For example a stateroom on top of the ship gets you closer to the pool and buffet areas. A stateroom near the main public decks gets you closer to the lounges and bars. If you do need to take an elevator it is easier to find one that is empty if you are starting from the top or the bottom. You will also find the busiest elevators are the ones that go up to the buffet.

Service charge comparison

Many of the Cruise Lines charge a service fee on top of the cruise fare. Regardless of what the fee is used for, you will need to plan the following cost into the price of the cruise. The prices shown reflect the current service fee for a 7 day cruise for 2 people. (All prices subject to change)

Welcome to CruiseStateroom.com

Thousands of cabin pictures, interactive deck plans, learn more about us.

Founded in 2001 by Dominique Vaccaro, a passionate cruise ship and old liner enthusiast since his childhood. He was concerned that only a few web sites provided a helpful and practical search for obtaining and visualization of cruise ship deck plans and staterooms available. Those that did, usually offered very little interactivity to find the configuration and location of a stateroom. One would get lost and perhaps bored by the opening of dozens of windows searching for information.

That is why this site came into existence. To help visitors, first time or even experienced cruise customers and travel agents search and find, through an easy to use and complete interface, the stateroom that would be best for their tastes, means or requests.

  • We have over 307,052 Stateroom Photos
  • We have over 27,060 Stateroom Videos
  • We have deck plans for 242 Cruise Ships

You can find cruise ship deck plans all over the internet. But our deck plans are truly interactive. As you view them you can mouse over pictures, pop ups and category information.

With a little knowledge and some helpful tips, you’ll be navigating the ship with ease in no time. From understanding the deck plan layout to utilizing signage and maps, I will share the secrets to locating your room effortlessly.

Additionally, I’ll reveal the tricks to deciphering room number patterns and utilizing the assistance of the friendly staff. So, grab your keycard and let’s embark on this adventure together. Finding your room on a Carnival cruise will be a breeze, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the excitement and relaxation that awaits you onboard.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • Look for room number signs located at eye level for easy visibility
  • Ask fellow passengers for directions if unsure about the room location
  • Utilize the ship’s interactive touchscreens or the Carnival Cruise Line mobile app for directions
  • Familiarize yourself with landmarks or points of reference near the cabin to easily remember the room location

Understand the Deck Plan Layout

Finding your room on a Carnival cruise can be a breeze once you understand the deck plan layout. To start, it’s important to have a good grasp of the different cabin categories available.

Carnival offers a range of cabins, from cozy interior rooms to luxurious suites with balconies. Each category has its own unique features and pricing, so it’s essential to choose the one that suits your preferences and budget.

Additionally, accessing the deck plans is crucial for finding your way around the ship. These plans provide a detailed layout of each deck, including the location of each cabin. They also highlight the different amenities and facilities available on each deck.

Once you have a good understanding of the deck plan layout and cabin categories, it’s easier to navigate the ship and locate the ship’s elevators smoothly.

Locate the Ship’s Elevators

Navigating the ship is a breeze once you step into the elevator, feeling the gentle lift as you ascend to your desired deck. To ensure a smooth experience, it’s important to follow proper elevator etiquette. Be mindful of others and let people exit before you enter. Inside the elevator, you’ll find a 2 column and 4 row table that displays the ship’s deck plan layout. This helpful tool allows you to easily locate your room and other key amenities. If you’re unsure about which elevator to take, simply refer to the table to find the closest one to your desired deck. Once you’ve found your way, use signage and maps to further navigate the ship’s various areas. These tools will help you explore everything the Carnival Cruise has to offer.

Use Signage and Maps

Once you step out of the elevator, you’ll be greeted by clear signage and detailed maps, guiding you effortlessly through the ship’s various areas. Here are three ways these tools can help you understand the ship’s layout and navigate the ship:

Clear Signage: Carnival Cruise ships have strategically placed signs throughout the corridors, making it easy to find your way. These signs indicate different areas such as dining venues, entertainment venues, and of course, the staterooms. Just follow the signs that point towards the staterooms, and you’ll be on the right track.

Detailed Maps: Carnival Cruise provides passengers with detailed maps of each deck. These maps highlight key areas and include symbols and room numbers, making it easier to locate your room. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the layout and use the map as a reference whenever you need to find your way.

Guest Services: If you’re still unsure about finding your room, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance at the Guest Services desk. They’re there to help and can provide you with additional guidance or even escort you to your stateroom.

With the help of signage and maps, you’ll have no trouble navigating the ship and finding your room. Pay attention to room number patterns, which I’ll discuss in the next section, to further enhance your understanding of the ship’s layout.

Pay Attention to Room Number Patterns

By observing the unique patterns in the room numbers, a treasure map of accommodations unfolds before your eyes, revealing a hidden path to your personal sanctuary on the ship. Carnival Cruise Line cleverly organizes their room numbers to help guests easily navigate the ship and find their cabins. The room numbers are typically a combination of letters and numbers, and each has a specific meaning. The first letter indicates the deck level, while the following numbers represent the section and the specific room within that section. For example, if your room number starts with the letter "M," you’ll know that your cabin is on the Middle deck. By understanding this room number organization, you can quickly locate your cabin and start enjoying your cruise experience. Now that you know how to decipher the room numbers, let’s explore another way to find your room: asking for assistance from the helpful staff onboard.

Ask for Assistance from Staff

If you ever need help aboard the ship, don’t hesitate to ask the friendly staff for assistance in locating your accommodations. They’re there to ensure that your experience on the Carnival cruise is enjoyable and stress-free.

To find your room, follow these steps:

  • Approach any staff member you see and politely ask for assistance in finding your room.
  • Provide them with your room number and deck level, as this’ll help them guide you in the right direction.
  • The staff member’ll kindly provide you with clear directions and instructions on how to reach your room.
  • If you have any additional questions or concerns, feel free to ask the staff member for further assistance.

By asking for assistance and finding staff members, you can quickly and easily locate your room on the Carnival cruise. Once you’ve settled into your accommodations, you can further enhance your experience by utilizing the ship’s mobile app.

Utilize the Ship’s Mobile App

After seeking assistance from the friendly staff, another convenient way to find your room on a Carnival cruise is by utilizing the ship’s mobile app. Before embarking on your cruise, make sure to download the app on your smartphone or tablet.

Once onboard, you can use the app for mobile check-in, which allows you to skip the lines and get your cruise started even faster. But that’s not all the app can do. It also serves as your digital key, granting you access to your stateroom with just a tap of your phone. No need to worry about carrying around a physical key card.

With the mobile app, everything is at your fingertips, making your cruise experience even more seamless and stress-free.

Now, let’s move on to the next tip: follow the color-coded signs to easily navigate the ship.

Follow the Color-Coded Signs

Navigating the ship is a breeze when you follow the color-coded signs, guiding you effortlessly to your destination.

Carnival Cruise lines have made it easy for guests to find their rooms by implementing a system of color-coded signs throughout the ship. Each deck is assigned a specific color, and the signs leading to the staterooms on that deck are marked with that color. This makes it simple to identify which direction to go in order to find your room.

Additionally, Carnival Cruise rooms are numbered in a pattern that’s easy to follow. Even numbered rooms are located on one side of the ship, while odd numbered rooms are located on the other side. This knowledge, combined with the color-coded signs, ensures that finding your room is a hassle-free experience.

As you make your way to your room, be sure to also look for landmarks or points of interest along the way, which’ll help you get familiar with the ship’s layout.

Look for Landmarks or Points of Interest

As you explore the ship, keep an eye out for unique landmarks or interesting points of interest that catch your attention. These visual cues can be extremely helpful in finding your way back to your room on a Carnival cruise. Whether it’s a vibrant piece of artwork, a distinctive sculpture, or a stunning view of the ocean, these landmarks can serve as helpful reminders of where you are on the ship. If you’re still having trouble locating your room, don’t hesitate to ask fellow passengers for help. They may have already familiarized themselves with the ship’s layout and can offer valuable guidance. Once you’ve found your room, be sure to check for room number signage on the doors to ensure you’ve arrived at the right place. Transitioning into the subsequent section, it’s also important to know other ways to locate your room.

Check for Room Number Signage on the Doors

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for room number signage on the doors. It’s a simple yet effective way to ensure you’re on the right track!

As you navigate the hallways of the Carnival cruise ship, take note of the numbers displayed on the doors. These room number signs are typically located at eye level and are easily visible. They are designed to help guests locate their rooms without any confusion.

If you find yourself unsure of where to go, don’t hesitate to ask fellow passengers for directions. They may have been on the ship longer and can provide helpful tips. Additionally, the ship’s interactive touchscreens are a valuable resource. Located throughout the ship, these touchscreens allow you to input your room number and receive directions to your destination.

By familiarizing yourself with these room number signs and utilizing the ship’s resources, finding your room will be a breeze. Remember your room location for easy navigation to the next section about ‘remember your room location for easy navigation.’

Remember Your Room Location for Easy Navigation

Make sure you remember the location of your cabin to easily navigate the ship during your Carnival cruise. Remembering your room location is essential for a smooth and hassle-free experience on board.

As you explore the ship, take note of landmarks or points of reference near your cabin. This could be a specific deck, a nearby restaurant, or a popular entertainment venue. Visualize the route to your cabin and mentally map out the quickest way to get there from different areas of the ship.

If you have trouble remembering directions, consider taking a picture of the ship’s deck plan or using the Carnival Cruise Line mobile app, which provides interactive maps and directions.

By keeping the location of your cabin in mind, you’ll have no trouble finding your way back after a day of fun and adventure.

Vaccine Considerations for Kids: Royal Caribbean's Latest Update Revealed

Tackling the implications of Royal Caribbean's new vaccine policies for children opens up a vital conversation for families planning their cruise adventures.

child vaccine policies updated

Navigating the nuances of vaccine considerations for kids in light of Royal Caribbean's latest update can be a crucial aspect of planning family cruises. The relaxation of restrictions for unvaccinated guests brings about a pertinent discussion on the implications for families with young children.

How will this adjustment impact the overall cruise experience and safety measures onboard? Let's explore the specifics of these updates and what they mean for families setting sail with Royal Caribbean in the near future.

  • Children under 5 exempt from vaccination and testing requirements on most Royal Caribbean cruises.
  • Kids aged 5+ need vaccination proof for sailings lasting 10 nights or more.
  • Families provided exemptions and alternatives to meet varying vaccination and testing criteria.
  • Policy adjustments offer clarity and flexibility for families with young children on Royal Caribbean cruises.

Vaccine Requirements for Kids

When traveling on most Royal Caribbean sailings, children 5 years and younger aren't required to be vaccinated. This exemption provides families with young children the flexibility to enjoy their cruise without the added vaccination burden. Additionally, unvaccinated children under 5 aren't mandated to provide a negative COVID-19 test result, easing the pre-travel preparation for parents.

Royal Caribbean's policy on vaccination requirements for children aims to balance safety with practicality. For sailings lasting 10 nights or more, children aged 5 and above must show proof of vaccination. However, exceptions to these requirements exist for specific destinations like Canada, Bermuda, Australia, and Singapore.

Age Groups Eligible for Vaccination

vaccine eligibility by age

Understanding the age groups eligible for vaccination is crucial for parents planning a Royal Caribbean cruise with their children. For Royal Caribbean sailings lasting 10 nights or more, children aged 5 and older are required to be vaccinated. This measure aligns with health guidelines and regulations to uphold safety standards onboard.

However, kids under 5 years old are exempt from vaccination requirements for all Royal Caribbean cruises, providing flexibility for families with younger children. The vaccination eligibility for children is determined by age, with specific criteria tailored to each age group.

It's essential for parents to review Royal Caribbean's vaccination policy for children before booking a cruise to ensure compliance with the guidelines. Royal Caribbean acknowledges the importance of flexibility and choice for families, providing options that align with individual preferences and needs. By offering tailored exemptions and alternatives, families can navigate the vaccination and testing process with more confidence and ease, ensuring a smoother cruise experience for all.

Booking Considerations for Families

traveling with kids tips

Considering various factors when booking a Royal Caribbean cruise with children can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for families. For families with children under 5 years old, there are no vaccination or testing requirements, making the booking process simpler. Unvaccinated children under 5 also don't need to provide a negative COVID-19 test result.

However, it's essential to note that testing regulations may vary depending on the duration of the cruise being booked. Families should be aware of exceptions for sailings to or from specific countries such as Canada, Bermuda, Australia, and Singapore. These exceptions could impact the booking process and overall experience, so staying informed is crucial.

Future Implications for Family Cruises

As families navigate the current landscape of family cruises with Royal Caribbean, it's vital to anticipate the evolving implications for the future.

Here are three key points to consider:

  • Vaccination and Testing Requirements : Families with children under 5 face no vaccination or testing mandates when cruising with Royal Caribbean. However, unvaccinated children must present a negative COVID-19 test result to set sail. Testing rules for kids vary based on cruise duration and specific destinations.
  • Exemptions for Vaccinated Families : On shorter cruises, vaccinated families with children under 5 are exempt from testing requirements, making planning easier for those who've received the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Policy Updates : Royal Caribbean's latest policy adjustments provide clarity and flexibility for families with young children, offering a more streamlined experience for those looking to embark on future cruises. Stay informed as guidelines may continue to evolve to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey for all passengers.

Do Kids Need to Be Vaccinated to Go on Royal Caribbean?

No, kids do not need to be vaccinated to go on Royal Caribbean cruises. However, unvaccinated guests, including children under 5, may need to provide a negative COVID-19 test result. Vaccinated guests with young children are exempt from this requirement.

What Are the Requirements for Children on Cruises?

On cruises, children 5 and under skip vaccines and tests. No worries about restrictions! Unvaccinated kids under 5 just need a negative COVID-19 test, except for certain destinations. Families sail free!

Do Kids Have to Be Vaccinated to Go on a Carnival Cruise?

No, kids don't have to be vaccinated to go on a Carnival cruise. Children under 12 can sail with a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated guests. Unvaccinated kids aged 2-11 need a negative COVID-19 test. Safety first for all guests!

Do Kids Have to Be Vaccinated to Go on Disney Cruise?

We don't need to worry about children being vaccinated for a Disney Cruise. Disney Cruise Line doesn't require kids to be vaccinated. Families can enjoy the magic of Disney together on the high seas without vaccination concerns.

As families plan their upcoming cruises with Royal Caribbean, the latest vaccine considerations for kids bring a mix of relief and caution. While unvaccinated guests can now sail with testing requirements, exceptions still apply for certain destinations.

Navigating these guidelines may seem daunting, but with proper planning and awareness, families can still enjoy their cruise vacations safely. Stay informed, stay prepared, and embark on your next adventure with confidence.

Economic Rebound Indicators

economic recovery signs identified

Signaling a positive turn in the island's economic recovery, several key indicators are pointing towards a resurgence in the U.S. Virgin Islands' financial stability following the aftermath of Tropical Storm Laura. While tourism revenue has shown signs of recovery with the return of cruise ships, challenges persist in the form of ongoing job losses, especially in the tourism sector. Despite the clearing of major roads and restoration of power, the closure of many major hotels has contributed to this issue. The Army Corps of Engineers' efforts, such as installing blue tarps on damaged roofs, have aided in the recovery process, but the impact of job losses remains significant.

As the U.S. Virgin Islands navigates through the aftermath of Tropical Storm Laura, the economic rebound indicators reflect a mix of progress and challenges. The return of cruise ships has injected life back into the local economy, yet the closure of major hotels continues to contribute to job losses in the tourism sector. Efforts by organizations like the Army Corps of Engineers are helping with recovery, but sustained efforts are needed to address the persisting issue of job losses in the region.

Infrastructure Restoration Progress

infrastructure restoration efforts ongoing

Following the clearing of major roads and reopening of seaports in the U.S. Virgin Islands, significant progress has been made in the infrastructure restoration efforts post-Tropical Storm Laura. The restoration of essential services and facilities vital to the tourism industry is well underway, ensuring a smooth recovery for visitors and residents alike.

  • Maritime Operations: Seaports have resumed operations, allowing for the seamless flow of goods and passengers, supporting the tourism sector's revival.
  • Power Restoration: Most areas affected by the storm now have power, ensuring that accommodations, attractions, and businesses can operate efficiently.
  • Airport Accessibility: Cyril E. King Airport and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport are fully operational, facilitating easy access for travelers to the islands.
  • Tourism Infrastructure: Minimal impact has been reported on the Territory's tourism infrastructure, indicating a robust and resilient foundation that can support the influx of tourists as the destination bounces back from the storm's aftermath.

The progress made in restoring the USVI's infrastructure underscores the commitment to revitalizing the tourism sector and ensuring a positive visitor experience.

Norwegian cruise quarantined due to stomach illness cases on board

how are cruise ship rooms numbered

PORT LOUIS, Mauritius ― Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Dawn arrived in Port Louis Monday after being quarantined off the coast of Mauritius with a reported stomach illness onboard. The ship was originally scheduled to arrive Sunday.

In a statement, Norwegian said "a small number of guests" were experiencing "mild symptoms of a stomach-related illness." The cruise from Mauritius to Cape Town that was originally scheduled to depart on Sunday will now embark passengers in Port Louis on Tuesday, though travelers have not yet received a finalized itinerary.

Norwegian Dawn was on a 12-day itinerary from Cape Town to Port Louis that started on Feb. 13 when the health issues were first reported.

"We have elevated our sanitation procedures aboard the ship as part of our routine measures to ensure a safe environment for all on board and will continue to take any necessary measures to protect our guests, crew and destinations we visit,” a Norwegian spokesperson said in an earlier statement.

Norwegian is providing complimentary hotel accommodations for guests until they are able to board, and assisting current guests on the ship with travel arrangements.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Crowds chant 'Alexei' outside funeral as he is buried to Sinatra classic; absent widow shares emotional tribute

The Putin critic is being buried in Moscow today, two weeks after his unexplained death in a penal colony. Thousands of mourners have assembled to pay tribute, with the Kremlin warning that unsanctioned gatherings for Navalny will break the law.

Some of Alexei Navalny's closest allies are posting their own farewell messages to the opposition leader after his burial.

Ivan Zhdanov posted a picture of Mr Navalny, saying "goodbye my friend" and reiterating his belief that he was killed by Vladimir Putin.

Kira Yarmysh, his spokeswoman, wrote: "You will be proud of us."

Alexei Navalny has been buried at Moscow's Borisovskoye cemetery, his team has confirmed.

Alexei Navalny's wife has paid tribute to her husband as he is buried in a Moscow cemetery two weeks after his death in prison.

Yulia Navalnaya - who has not attended her husband's funeral as she is outside of Russia - thanked Mr Navalny for "26 years of absolute happiness... even over the last three years".

In a message accompanying a video tribute on X, she said: "For love, for always supporting me, for making me laugh even from prison, for the fact that you always thought about me.

"I don't know how to live without you, but I will try to make you up there happy for me and proud of me. I don't know if I can handle it or not, but I will try.

"We will definitely meet one day. I have so many untold stories for you, and I have so many songs saved for you on my phone, stupid and funny, in general, to be honest, terrible songs, but they are about us, and I really wanted to let you listen to them.

"And I really wanted to watch you listen to them, laugh and then hug me. Love you forever. Rest in peace."

Alexei Navalny's burial ceremony has begun at the Borisovskoye cemetery in Moscow.

His coffin was lowered into the grave to the song My Way by Frank Sinatra, his spokeswoman said.

According to Mr Navalny's ally Ivan Zhdanov, people will have an opportunity to throw a handful of earth on to the coffin.

It was followed by music from the final scene of Terminator 2 - his favourite film, according to his allies.

Under leaden skies and with a heavy police presence lining the funeral route, thousands of mourners turned out to pay respects for Alexei Navalny.

But in Vladimir Putin's Russia what should be nothing more than a show of respect is in itself an act of bravery and defiance.

Mr Navalny was a harsh critic of the regime and unlike others managed to land political punches in a land where there is no opposition.

His detailed exposes of corruption and theft among the leadership were scathing and for Putin and his cronies extremely unwelcome, representing an Achilles' heel in the authoritarian structures that have been meticulously built over years of repression.

Mr Navalny's bravery is the stuff of legend but attending his funeral is also not without consequence.

Hundreds of people have been arrested around the country since his death simply for attending memorials that have been set up in remembrance.

Those turning out today run the risk of bringing themselves to the attention of the security services and even arrest.

In Putin's Russia that can have far-reaching consequences, from the obvious of trumped-up charges and prison time to more prosaic difficulties such as securing employment, or treatment for your family at a medical centre.

The aim of the Kremlin, of course, is to attempt to deny Mr Navalny what they tried to do in life and that is the space to become a heroic figure of resistance.

In life they tried - and arguably failed - to paint him inside Russia as a traitor and a stooge of the West. In death they hope to prevent him having a martyr's funeral and searing his legacy in the consciousness of Russians.

But judging by the crowds and the interest his life and death have provoked they may well have miscalculated.

Footage is now emerging of the burial at the Borisovskoye cemetery in Moscow.

Alexei Navalny's coffin is being prepared as a small number of people with flowers file in through the gates.

Sombre music is playing, and the mourners take it in turns to walk up to the casket to pay their respects. Some are clutching crosses.

A white shroud is placed over Mr Navalny's head.

The politician's parents, Anatoly Navalny and Lyudmila Navalnaya, stand at the side of the coffin.

Ms Navalnaya appears emotional.

The lid is then placed on the coffin.

Thousands of people have turned out to pay their respects to Alexei Navalny, despite only a small number being allowed into the funeral service.

More images are coming in of the crowd that gathered outside for Alexei Navalny's funeral service.

Some were seen holding roses, and many chanted the politician's name.

The main door of the church, through which Alexei Navalny's coffin was carried and mourners walked, has had two signs up on it all day.

The one on the left says photography is banned, while the one on the right reads: "Closed for cleaning."

Alexei Navalny's team says fewer than 300 people were allowed inside the church for his farewell ceremony, which was held "as quickly as possible".

Mr Navalny's coffin was carried out of the church less than an hour after the ceremony began.

It has since arrived at the Borisovskoye cemetery following a short journey.

The Russian opposition leader's anti-corruption foundation has posted television footage of people throwing flowers at Mr Navalny's hearse while shouting "thank you, Alexei!".

A Russian Telegram channel also posted footage of people throwing flowers as police guarded the barriers:
