Astonishing places to visit in Diu: Reimagine Tranquility!

diu gujarat tourist places

Visit Diu to experience tranquil beaches, Portuguese history, and a calm quaint town. This union territory of India has the perfect balance of beaches with a quieter vibe than Goa or Pondicherry . The town is usually known in conjunction with Daman as Daman & Diu , while both are miles apart with a sea in between. Diu is on the west end of Gujarat and Daman is on the Southern end. Many told us to skip visiting Diu as there’s “nothing to see”, but we went there anyway and came back content. So, here’s why you should visit Diu, one of the 7 union territories of India. And here are my recommendations about the top places to visit in Diu, especially on a day.

Don’t miss my Gujarat travel guide!

diu sea

What are the Places to visit in Diu in a day | Diu Travel Guide

Nagoa beach.

One of the most famous beaches in Diu is Nagoa Beach. The water-based adventure activities including parasailing, jet skiing, boating and even scuba diving make Nagoa Beach one of the must-see places to visit in Diu.

Nagoa beach | Places to visit in Diu | Places to see in Diu | Diu Travel Guide | What to do in Diu | What to see in Diu | Diu Travel | #diu #gujarat #india

Those not interested in adventure activities can enjoy the beach which is comparatively quiet even in the peak season. Just sit back on the clean beach and enjoy the calm sea.

Did you know – Nagoa Beach is horse-shoe shaped!

Located on one end of the Diu island, the Diu Fort is one of the amazing places to visit in Diu. During Portuguese colonial rule in Diu, the fort was built in the 15th century. The fort’s walls are erected in a way that defended the alliance between the Portuguese & Sultan of Gujarat against the Mughal war to gain reign here. The inner walls of the Diu Fort still hold the guns used at the time.

The best part of the fort is free entry ! The gigantic walls of the Diu Fort offer breathtaking views of the sea & the city as well. The lighthouse at one end of the Fort makes up for a picturesque view.

light house | Places to visit in Diu | Places to see in Diu | Diu Travel Guide | What to do in Diu | What to see in Diu | Diu Travel | #diu #gujarat #india

A walk in the fort from the entry gate to the top will require at least an hour at a slow pace. It was like a walk down the historic lane with a gorgeous view of the blue sea at every corner.

The Pani Kotha or Alfiston jail is also visible from the Diu Fort. The glittering view of the stone structure of Pani Kotha amid the blue sea adds to the brilliance to the Fort. The shimmering lighted jail makes up for a wondrous sight in the night. There are regular ferries by which tourists can visit Pani Kotha. The Fort is also home to a chapel for ‘ Our Lady of the Sea ‘ and a lighthouse.

pani kotha

St Paul’s Church

Closely located to Diu Fort, the 16th-century church whitewashed church is a delight for the eyes. The finesse of baroque architecture makes St. Paul’s Church as one of the top places to visit in Diu. The church is the finest example of Portuguese influence in the country.

St Paul's Church | Places to visit in Diu | Places to see in Diu | Diu Travel Guide | What to do in Diu | What to see in Diu | Diu Travel | #diu #gujarat #india

Photography is not allowed inside the church. In my opinion, the craftsmanship of the exterior architecture is awe-inspiring to witness.

Naida Caves

For those who seek to visit something off-beat in Diu, Naida cave is the answer for them. The caves are still a hidden gem and are located near Jallandhar Beach. Known for their natural formations, these underground caves are perfect for those seeking some tranquillity .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hotel Kohinoor Diu (@hotelkohinoordiu)

If serenity is not your thing, and you love photography instead, then also Naida caves are perfect for you. Head to the caves early morning when the sun rays are peeping inside, and you’ll capture some amazing pictures.

Diu Museum found its way by being converted from St. Thomas Church to a museum. The museum has historic antiques, sculptures, wooden idols and stone inscriptions. There is no entry charge to this 15th-century church-turned-museum.

diu museum | Places to visit in Diu | Places to see in Diu | Diu Travel Guide | What to do in Diu | What to see in Diu | Diu Travel | #diu #gujarat #india

Honestly, I was a tad underwhelmed by the condition of the museum and the spider webs were a turn-off for me. If you’re with family and do not prefer to visit museums, then you can skip the Diu museum and rather enjoy the time at the beach.

Jallandhar Beach

If you’re looking to spend some quiet time on an offbeat beach, then Jalandhar Beach is for you. Not a typical beach, the entry to the beach is as unusual as the beach favoured by algae. Jallandhar Beach is a primarily rocky beach with green algae on the seafront. This might not be ideal for chilling on the beach, but perfect for photography lovers, just like me. I took a ton myself when I could even get to the water!

2023 Update – Jallandhar Beach is now a much cleaner & developed tourist spot, with a cafeteria nearby too.

diu gujarat tourist places

The beach is deserted and good for 360-degree views of the sea. Although there are no shacks available, no decent place to sit rather is good for enjoying the views. The beach is an incredible addition to your off-beat things to do in Diu.

Gangeshwar Mahadev Temple

The temple is known to be home to Shivalingas who were sent back by the sea near Jallandhar beach. If you are a believer of God Shiva, then you may visit the temple when in Diu.

Where to Stay in Diu

If you’re spending a night or more in Diu, then my recommendation will be to stay in a resort with the sea in view. But there are some good hotels as well, so here are my picks –

Krishna Beach Resorts – One of the top-rated resorts in Diu is the beach-facing Krishna Beach Resorts. Apart from the beach within walking distance, the hotel offers a pool, a bar, room service, and free parking. The resort also offers an airport shuttle if you’re directly landing at Diu airport. You can book the resort using this link .

Diu TentCity – Khodidhar – If camping by the sea is your idea of a beach vacation, then I recommend Diu TentCity. A private beach and beautiful location add to the charm of the stay here. You can book using this link .

The Grand Highness – One of the most luxurious hotels in Diu City, which also provides airport transfers. With grand and extravagant interiors, laudable wifi services, daily housekeeping, and responsive staff. The hotel is located near the Diu Fort making it one of my top choices to stay in Diu. You can book using this link .

Where to Eat in Diu

I had a hard time trying to find Gujarati thali during my Gujarat trip , specifically the Kathiyawadi food, which is applicable in western Gujarat. By luck, we make a stop at the  Bamaniya Restaurant for a quick lunch where Kathiyawadi food was also served. They have both buffet and ala carte options which includes non-vegetarian food too. The restaurant is open air with fans & coolers available but no AC which is fine for December to February months.

Diu food

How to commute in Diu

Like any other part of India, Diu is well-equipped with auto-rickshaws. As it is a small island, one ride may range from 40₹ to 200₹. Although, if you prefer to explore the city at your own pace, and know how to ride a two-wheeler, then scooters are also available for rent at 350₹ per day plus fuel. Bear in mind, showing your driving license is a must and a deposit of 1500₹ is also mandatory.

Check out where to stay in Junagadh!

So, this is my Diu Travel Guide with all the places to visit in a day or more.

Best Places to Visit in Diu

The city of Diu, which lies hidden within the frothy blue waters of the Arabian Sea, previously had a significant impact on the ancient commercial route. In Diu, there are many places to see, including a lot of beaches, monuments, and memorials. It is incredible that this tiny city offers so many tourist attractions considering that Diu is currently the ninth least populated town in India. Diu has an incredibly huge amount of cultural history to uncover in addition to its sites and tourist attractions as a result of the mingling of the cultures of India, Portugal, and England. Additionally, Diu has beautiful beachfront landscape that attracts tourists from throughout the world.

Best Tourist Places to Visit in Diu, Gujarat

The optimum time to travel to Diu during the monsoon season is seen as being between the months of August and October. The summertime temperature is always high because it is a seaside city. But only in the summer will you have the greatest fun in the city. Diverse activities are available for you to partake in right now in Diu. So, you can also travel to Diu between March and July if you wish to have a good time during the summer. So let us explore in the journey to the best places to visit in this island.

Fortress Of Panikotha

Fortress Of Panikotha

A well-known Diu jail called Panikota Fort, also called Fortim-Do-Mar, is located on an island in Simbor Harbor. The trip from Diu to the seaside was around 46 kilometres long. The fort served as a jail when the country won its independence from the Portuguese. Because it was totally encircled by water, the island was perfect for holding captives because they could not escape. Make sure you visit there at least once because it is one of the main tourist spots in Diu.

It was built by Malik Aiyaz when Islam was the predominant religion. It served as a checkpoint to manage the flow of ships carrying expensive Asian products, mainly Indian spices, into Diu. The movement of the ships was controlled by a defensive structure that joined the sea bastion or castle to the land bastion by a thick steel chain on the riverbed. This was raised and lowered to keep intruding ships out. After erecting a fort there in 1535, the Portuguese took possession of the little fortress at Diu. In 1588, under the captain of the fort's instructions, Aires Falcao, they expanded the fort by adding new constructions. According to a stone inscription still visible attached to the fortress wall, Captain of the Fort of Diu Being Aires Falcao gave the order to build additional structures to the Bastion of the Sea as it is in the year 1588.

Additionally, the Portuguese constructed a little Chapel in the Fortress in 1638 and honoured Our Lady of Victory with its dedication. This was accomplished in recognition of the Portuguese triumph over the Dutch, according to the stone inscription that was discovered connected to the Chapel wall. In addition, a bastion called "Menagem" has been constructed in the middle, where a lighthouse has been placed and is emitting green light. A commander's apartment, a storeroom, a cistern, and prisoner housing are also present in the fortress. Another theory holds that the Fortress and the Fort of Diu are connected by a tunnel under the water.

Diu Fort

Fort Diu is one of the most well-known sights to see in Diu and is located adjacent to or on the coast. In addition to providing a surreal view of the horizons, the fort also features a soundscape of the sound of the waves crashing against its walls and sending foam to its highest reaches. The lighthouse is off limits to the general public. The fort was constructed by the Portuguese, and its jetty is still in use today. The fort once had a considerable impact on the trade route connecting Cambay, Surat, and Bharuch in Gujarat. There are a lot of guns on the parapet, and there are a lot of cannonball remains all over the fort.

It is encircled by the sea on three sides and a canal on one. A strategic partnership between Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, and the Portuguese against the Mughals led to the building of the enormous battle-fearing fort in 1535 by D. Nuno da Cunha and its restoration in 1546 by D. Joao de Castro. The Fort sits 26.40 metres above sea level and has an area of 5.6 hectares. This enormous building housed houses for the nobles, a storehouse, soldier barracks, a house for arms and ammunition, a prison, a church, and a chapel that is unfortunately in ruins.

Bastions like Bastions St. Domingos, St. Nicolau, St. Philip, Couraça, Cavaleiro, St. James, Bastion Chato (Flat), St. George, St. Tereza, and St. Lucy are among the many bastions that make up the Fort. The oldest of them all is supposedly St. George's. When you enter the Fort, the majestic old stonework stops you in your tracks and transports you to a bygone era of brave soldiers when time stood still. Walking around its massive ramparts and sensing the scary cannons and iron shells that still lie scattered about, I want to delve into history and piece together the intriguing stories of battles and civilizations.

Nagoa Beach

Nagoa Beach

Nagoa Beach, one of the most popular tourist spots in Diu, offers breathtakingly expansive lengths of sand flanked by the warm Arabian Sea waves and carved with trees. The unusual Hoka Trees, is located along Nagoa Beach, which also provides the best Diu beach experience. Diu provides a range of adventure sports in addition to exhilarating rides on camels and ponies. In Diu, one may find long beach walks, tranquil settings, local restaurants providing local food, and a lot of luxurious homes.

Of the five beaches, it is the most attractive, located in the Nagoa hamlet of Village Bucharwada, 8 kilometres from Diu. Nagoa is a stunning semicircular beach where the lapping waves beckon you to wade in for a day of fun-filled activities like swimming, playing, or just relaxing along the soft sandy beachfront. Additionally, you can find yourself dozing off beneath the rare palm palms with their tranquil atmosphere. Compare this beach to Goa's best beaches for contrast.

The accessibility to the area's resorts makes it simple for visitors to unwind while also admiring the natural beauty of the surroundings. Beautiful palm trees that sway in the cool breeze surround the beach, providing visitors with an exotic setting in which to unwind. The calm Blue Ocean and excellent sands make the beach worth visiting and enjoying.

Along with its aquatic activities, it is widely renowned for its camel and pony rides. The most tempting activity at Nagoa Beach might be tanning. Stores and restaurants provide one of its drink varieties. Two kilometres of beach may be found in every direction. One of the best ways to unwind is to take a walk along the beach and watch the dawn and sunset.

Naida Caves

Naida Caves

The Naida Caves, which are a network of interconnecting tunnels, were constructed by the Portuguese outside the Diu Fort's fortifications. The nearby town of Diu's caves have a massive network of square-hewn corridors and steps that has never been completely explored. Naida Caves is one of Diu's most underrated tourist attractions and is just as exciting for adventurers and history buffs as it is for photographers.

After the Portuguese took control of Diu and dismantled pieces of a massive rock structure that they utilised for construction, Naida Caves gradually took on its current form. It's interesting to note that these caves developed throughout time as a result of geological anomalies and natural forces. Slowly but surely, Naida Caves is being acknowledged as one of the most stunning tourist destinations since prehistoric times. The caves are picturesque because they have a natural aperture that lets sunlight in.

When the Portuguese were unwilling to leave Diu in the 20th century, Operation Vijay was carried out by the Indian Army to take control, and some soldiers were stationed near the Naida Caves at that time. Portuguese rock alterations made over time are the cause of these seemingly natural cave constructions. They served as a base camp for the Indian Army's Operation Vijay to recapture Diu from the Portuguese. These well-known tourist attractions in Diu consist of a series of interconnected rooms with hewn staircases that have a square shape. When the Portuguese were not prepared to leave Diu in the 20th century, Operation Vijay was undertaken by the Indian Army to take control, and some soldiers were stationed near the Naida Caves at that time. Portuguese rock changes carried out over time are the cause of these seemingly natural cave constructions. They served as base camps for the Indian Army's Operation Vijay to reclaim Diu from the Portuguese. The northern side of the island, facing Gujarat, is tidal marshland and saltpans while the southern coast alternates between limestone cliffs, rocky covers and sandy beaches. The caves have a natural opening in the ground extending beyond the zone of light, and vary in shapes and sizes. Since ancient times, people have considered these caves to be one of the most stunning natural attractions. In the world's numerous caverns, useful proof of early man's curiosity has been found.

Gangeshwar Temple

Gangeshwar Temple

The Gangeshwar Mahadev Temple is one of Diu's most well-liked sights and a well-known traveller stop. River Ganga is the presiding deity of the temple that the Pandavas are credited with building. The shrine's claim to fame is its five SHIV LINGAS. Only the tips of these things are visible during high tide. The temple is located in Fudam Village, which is roughly 3 kilometres from Diu. The area is beautiful and holds significant historical and religious value. The age of this Mahadev Temple exceeds 5000 years. It resembles a shrine in a coastal cave surrounded by rocks.

This Temple honours Lord Shiva, the transformation of the Hindu triad, with its tranquil and breathtaking landscape. During high tide, the sea fully engulfs these rocks, leaving only the tip exposed. Lord Shiva, popularly known as the Lord of the Ganges and the presiding deity of the Gangeshwar Mahadev Mandir, is referred to as Gangeshwar since it is thought that the River Ganga originated from the tresses of this god.

Since these Shivlingas are constantly being washed by the waves of the Arabian Sea, one must touch the Lord when they are returning. Visitors have intense feelings of spiritual awe and devotion when they see the enchanted scene of the ocean's waves bowing to Lord Shiva. You might encounter Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi at the Gangeshwar temple's entryway. Everything you brought to God would be immediately carried away by the tide since there was no priest there.

A long-standing mythology states that this is essentially a seaside cave surrounded by rocks. The syllables Ganga and Iswar combine to produce the name Gangeshwar, which signifies the Lord of Ganga. Ganga and Lord Shiva have a connection. She descended from heaven, and Lord Shiva was the one who caught her waters in his Jata and shielded the world from her strong currents. As a result, Lord Shiva is often referred to as Gangadhar or Gangeshwar.

St. Paul Church

St. Paul Church

The Convert of St. Paul, another name for this massive building, was built to house the Jesuit Seminary. The seminary was located in the church's cloister. Due to the fact that the seminarians were getting ready to work in Akbar's Court, Arabic was intended to be covered in the course material. There is a lot to say about it because it is a historic building. The inside walls are intriguingly decorated with shell-like patterns, perhaps to fit in with the surroundings and the abundance of shells around Diu's coastlines. The grandiose front façade immediately catches one's eye. The pulpit and the three black wood altars are the church's most valuable items. The church's greatest asset is not its tall vaulted stone dome, despite how amazing it is and how it makes people gasp in wonder.

The well-known St. Paul Church also goes by the name Church of the Immaculate Conception. It is important both historically and religiously. This gorgeous Gothic building was constructed by Portuguese craftsmen. The construction effort was completed in 1610, and it was then consecrated for use in worship. It is the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

The Portuguese colony in Africa called Mozambique is where the wood is thought to have its origin from. The two well-known paintings that show the birth of Jesus and the presentation of the newborn Jesus in the temple with Simeon the High Priest carrying the baby Jesus in his arms, fulfilling the prophesy, are also permanently attached to the interior wall of the church's magnificent entrance gates. The majestic statue of Mary the Immaculate Conception is located on the main altar, and directly behind it is the sanctuary, also known as the Sanctum Sanctorum or "Holy of Holies" of the temple. The altar to the right honours Our Lady of the Rosary, and a statue of Jesus' Sacred Heart is placed beneath it on a stand.

The Sea Shell Museum

The Sea Shell Museum

A "must stop" place if you're going to Nagoa Beach is the Shell Museum. On the Nagoa Road, it is located close to the airport and six kilometres from a town. Despite being unknown, this seashell museum is special in its own right. The collection of the museum is both wonderful and unique. Such a collection is exclusive to India and is not present elsewhere. The owner's hobby of collecting shells has grown into a museum. This fascinating structure houses a display of unique and uncommon seashells from all around the world. To help you understand the distinction between cowrie shells and poisonous cone shells, a merchant navy captain by the name of Captain Devjibhai Vira Fulbaria has painstakingly displayed and labelled hundreds of shells in English. He has gathered these shells over the course of 50 years at sea.

These shells, which are really amazing to look at, are exhibited beneath various magnifying glasses. You'll be surprised to hear that the collection as a whole contains between 2500 and 3000 seashells. You probably had no idea seashells could be so diverse. Due to their outstanding beauty and uniqueness, Diu Island and the adjacent attractions are renowned for providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A handful of the shell arts will also catch your interest. You could easily spend the entire day exploring the museum while you admire the exquisite and unique shells on display. Some of the items in the collection have been donated by other collectors, therefore the Captain does not own the entire collection. An owner of a rare and distinctive shell may give it to the museum for storage and eventual display. Among the shells on display in the museum are spider, scorpion, cockle, abalone, mollusk, crustacean, and other types in a variety of sizes and shapes. The museum also offers a substantial library of books and other learning resources that cover the history of shells in great depth. You must purchase a Rs. 10 admission ticket to enter the museum.

A crew of 18 officers and 176 sailors perished along with her when she sank 40 nautical miles off the coast of Diu. Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla, who later awarded the Mahavir Chakra (Posthumous) of the Indian Navy, decided to die along with the battleship at the time he was commanding the ship. The gallant act of Capt. Mulla and his brave crew upholds the highest traditions of the Indian Navy by standing as a shining example of steadfast courage and unwavering spirit. On December 15, 1999, the INS Khukri Memorial, which is situated on the hills at Chakratirth beach, was officially opened. It is a precise replica of the navy vessel INS Khukri.

It might be found close to the Ghoghla settlement, which is around 15 kilometres from the main Diu town. This beach is a well-liked tourist destination since it has lodging and dining options. It has expansive flat tidal areas, gentle waves, and golden beaches. The water is perfect all year round, being crystal clear and clean. Diu Tourist Places You Must Visit During Gujarat Trip

Diu is an island surrounded by the Arabian Sea. Connecting to Gujarat border via 2 bridges ( 1 from Bhavnagar, Ahmedabad side and another from Somnath side.

This island will make you remember Portuguese Architecture. It is known for its peace, greenery, heritage fortress & Portugese Cathedrals. Empty roads, flying birds, fresh air, greenery, tall cathedrals, and clean attractive beaches are the different status symbols of Diu Town. People are usually very kind and helpful.

The majority of people have settled abroad in the UK (London), as they hold Portugal Passport though they can quickly fly away. Locals are already living quality and royal life. Just relaxing, fishing, and chilling out on different beaches i.e. Nagoa, Ghogla, Jalandhar, and Chakratirth.

Every part of Diu has some story or history behind it.  Let’s discuss the places you can visit and the story behind those places. The best time to visit Diu is early monsoon. You can find greenery all over the rocky coves and sandy beaches during this time. Coconut trees are like crowns all over the town.

If you are planning to visit Diu, below we have listed the best Diu Tourist places that you must explore.

1. GHOGHLA BEACH: International “Blue Flag Certificate”

As you enter Diu, the very first beach comes to Ghoghla Beach. This beach is the cleanest of all as it is least explored. The one who loves to spend time alone is the best place for that particular as it is not much crowded. You can enjoy book reading with a cup of coffee or have a couple of beers at the backside beach view of circuit house Ghoghla which has all basic amenities. One of the most attractive places in Diu is Ghoghla Beach. This beach has a “Blue Flag Certificate”. The beach can be the best place for a family holiday. You may enjoy water sports activities sometime.

2. FORT DIU :

Just after crossing the bridge, you enter Diu town. There comes the Jethibai Bus station of Diu. Rarely 2 or 3 garages are there opposite of bus stop, from where you can take the bike on rent. Rent charges are a little bit high on weekends i.e. around 500 per day and during weekdays 400.

You will see a 400-year-old wall beside the bus stand, which I will explain in a particular section, firstly u need to get a bike to explore Diu and start with Diu Fort.

The Fortress of Diu, surrounded by the Arabian Sea from three sides & was protected by several weapons from the land side. It covers an area of around 60 sqm. It will take you around 5-10 minutes from the bus stand to enter the fort.

Before entering, I will suggest you have a water bottle and some snacks with you as it will take around 2 hours to explore the fort properly. Inside the fort, you will come across many storage types of structures which the Portuguese used to store their arms and ammunition, food grains, and other essential things. Many secret tunnels are believed to be there inside the fort in order to escape during war or any other blunders. There is a lighthouse inside and 3 high towers to watch enemies. The stunning Arabian Sea can be seen from different higher spots of the fort. Prison for the criminals can be seen from inside the fort or jetty called “The Fortress of Panikotha”

3. St. PAUL CHURCH:

Takes only 10-15 minutes from Fort to reach St. Paul Church. It holds a very strong historical significance. It IS more than 400 years old. Its construction took around 10 years (1601-1610). The St. Paul Church is a big example of an Indian Islamic and Christian Architect. The dome shape of the church was built to withstand any cyclonic forces. As earlier people knew the fact that it’s a coastal region and needs to design accordingly. The work inside the church is eye-catching. A combination of wood & lime work will take your heart away.

4. St. FRANCIS ASSISI CHURCH:

The oldest church of Diu was constructed in 1593. It turned into a hospital later on and served for many years, locals still call it the name old hospital church. They believed that it still holds some religious powers. You will see a beautiful wooden work carving inside and this church is built on a high platform. This is one of the best Diu tourist places for a pre-wedding shoot. With this corner of Diu, you are headed toward Jallandhar Beach.

5. JALLANDHAR BEACH:

Heading towards Jallandhar Beach, here comes the second beach of Diu. There is a summer house at the corner where locals come with family to enjoy personal time as the name defines itself where one can spend time in summer. A new circuit house is built near the beach.

You will find eternal peace there and can enjoy the view. Just after a 5-minute walk from the summer house, you will head towards City Wall of Diu which is 1.34 km long containing 12 bastions (a part of the wall of a castle that sticks out and from which attacks can be made in all directions).

The wall connects Jallandhar Beach and Jethibai bus stop. As you approach to visit that wall there is sacred Hindu Chandika Mata Temple at the beginning of the wall. Locals have many stories about this temple. After heading over Bastion 1 you will be able to see one of the best architectural styles and can enjoy an amazing walk. From Bastion 1 you can see the top of the old hospital church, summer house and INS Khukri memorial.

6. Naida Caves – Waterfall :

These caves are other breathtaking structures formed by Portugals as they used to hack building materials from this area and after that other geological processes. As a result, caves are formed. Locals said that during Operation Vijay in 1961  Portuguese Army used to hide inside these caves. These are different in size and openings. Somehow as these are very old, now cracks are being developed at different rocks which make it a little scary. Crackmeters are laid over and props are installed by Diu authorities to ensure the safety of tourists .

7. INS Khukhri Memorial:

Again coming back towards Jallandhar beach, you can head towards INS Khukhri Memorial which is at Chakratirth Bach. The best sunset of the town can be seen from this part. Talking about INS Khukhri Memorial, was named after the Indian Warship INS Khukhri.

During India Pakistan war in 1971, 2 warships of the Indian Navy named INS Kukhri and INS Kirpaan were around 50 km far away from the Diu coast. Suddenly unknowingly both were attacked by a Pakistani Submarine named Hangor which was already present there. Our Navy didn’t come to know about its presence as the SONAR system at that time was not very strong and was on trial by the authority. Indian Navy Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla tried to save many using rescue boats without thinking about his own life. We had lost 18 officers and 176 sailors.

Govt. authorities of Diu have put their best efforts to pay tribute to the martyrs and make it one of the best among all Diu tourist places.

8. Gangeshwar Temple

This temple is around 5000 years old, you will reach the temple in around 10-15 minutes from INS Khukhri Memorial. There you will see 5 Shivlingas just below rocks and seawater immersing those during high tides. These Shivlingas were installed by 5 Pandavas (Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula & Sahadeva) to find peace over there just after Mahabharat Yudh. These are the only Shivlingas in India that are believed to be inside the ocean.
