Planning A Golf Trip To Pinehurst: What To Know

Pinehurst is the original golf resort. It has been open for more than 125 years and yet the idea is still being copied around the world: Find a great piece of land, develop lodging around multiple golf courses, and welcome visitors who want to experience a golf getaway.

The concept worked in other locations 100 years ago (like The Greenbrier in West Virginia, built in 1913) and it works today (like Bandon Dunes in Oregon, developed in the last 20 years). The original, though, is Pinehurst in North Carolina.

James Walker Tufts purchased nearly 6,000 acres in south-central North Carolina back in 1895, where he built an inn first and then started to develop golf courses. What was originally one golf course grew to nine courses on the property. The most famous, and the site of so much golf history, is the famed Pinehurst No. 2.

Designed by Donald Ross, Pinehurst No. 2 remains one of the greatest golf courses in the world. The 1999 U.S. Open, staged at Pinehurst, remains one of golf’s greatest moments, with Payne Stewart sinking a putt on the 18th hole to defeat Phil Mickelson. Stewart would tragically die in an airplane accident only months later, and a statue of Stewart’s celebration on the 18th green after sinking the putt is now one of the most well-known attractions at Pinehurst.

But Pinehurst is so much more than just its most famous course. Here’s what you need to know before you visit Pinehurst.

Fly Into Raleigh-Durham

Pinehurst is located in a fairly remote area of North Carolina. As a result, it’s not within an hour of any major airports. Drive-wise, Pinehurst is 100 miles from Charlotte, 125 miles from Wilmington, and 75 miles from Raleigh-Durham.

If flying in for your trip to Pinehurst, Raleigh-Durham is by far the best choice, not only because it’s the closest airport, but also because the resort has a shuttle service that will provide transportation to and from the airport. If you’re staying at the resort (and you should), ask about the shuttle timing when you make your reservation. If the times can be aligned, it’s possible you won’t need a rental car for your trip. All transportation to and from the airport (and to and from the golf courses) can be provided by the resort.

Now, it’s possible you’ll want to explore other parts of the state on your visit, and if that’s the case, you’ll want a rental car. But if it’s just a quick trip to get in a few rounds, let the resort provide all of your ground transportation.

Stay At The Carolina Hotel

There are four places to stay on the property. There’s the original hotel, the Holly Inn, built in 1895. The recently renovated Manor Inn is a smaller, more secluded property. And then there are two- and three-bedroom condos available if you have a larger group.

But the crown jewel of the property is the Carolina Hotel . The hotel is closing in on 120 years in operation, so you’re stepping into history when you exit your vehicle under the porte cochere. The hotel has 240 guest rooms, ranging from a single bed to massive suites, so you’re certain to find the room type that will fit your needs.

The main reason to stay at the Carolina Hotel, however, is the experience. Pinehurst isn’t just a golf trip — it’s a journey back in time. Sitting on the veranda of the hotel with a drink after your round, much like someone might have done in 1920, connects you to all the history at Pinehurst. Or visit the Ryder Cup Room and take in the history of the 1951 Ryder Cup, which was held at Pinehurst. So much of golfing history is found right here.

Pinehurst No. 2 Has Been Restored To Its Original Design

Many golfers have visited Pinehurst several times. And most of them have played the world-famous No. 2 course. But some might not know that it underwent a major renovation in 2011 and has been returned to its original Donald Ross design.

Pinehurst No. 2 hosted the 2014 U.S. Open, and in anticipation of that event, the resort decided to undergo a major renovation to the course. Over the years, design changes to No. 2 had taken it away from Donald Ross’s original vision. So Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw were hired to return the course to a design as close to the original as possible. Sandy “waste areas” that had been removed over the years were put back in, returning the course to its pine-trees-and-sand roots.

If you watched the 2014 U.S. Open on TV, you know how radical the changes were. The course looked nothing like the famous 1999 U.S. Open also hosted there. And golfers who have played it since the renovation have stated the same. It’s still Pinehurst No. 2 — now it’s simply better.

Explore The Area In A Complimentary BMW

As mentioned above, a rental car isn’t required for your Pinehurst trip. You can take the shuttle from RDU airport and use the local shuttles from your hotel to the courses. If you’re wanting to explore central North Carolina, then yes, you should rent a car. But if you just want to get out and explore for an afternoon, there’s a third option: the BMW Guest Drive program .

This program allows guests and members at Pinehurst to use a complimentary BMW for three hours. You more or less get a three-hour BMW test drive, free of charge. So if you took the shuttle from the airport but you want to drive into Southern Pines for dinner one night, the BMW Guest Drive program is your solution.

Vehicles are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so talk to Resort Services at the hotel about the times when you would need the vehicle.

It’s Best To Book A Package

The best way to book your trip is to book your lodging, golf, and other resort services as part of a package. There are multiple packages available on the Pinehurst website for you to peruse. Some examples:

The Bed And Breakfast Package can be booked for just one night or as many nights as you want. Each night purchase includes your room, breakfast, and a round of golf. Stay three nights and it’s three rounds of golf and three breakfasts (plus three nights at the hotel).

The Donald Ross Package includes three rounds of golf and two nights. A common itinerary for this package would be to arrive in the morning and play one course, spend the night, play a second course the next day, spend a second night, and play a third course before departing the following afternoon. Both breakfast and dinner are provided with this package as well, so all you’ll have to worry about is lunch out on the course.

Pinehurst Now Has A Putting Course

In 2012, Pinehurst added an 18-hole putting course called Thistle Dhu (meant to sound like “this’ll do”). So if your group only includes a few golfers, but everyone wants to try something golf-related, this is the perfect opportunity.

Thistle Dhu is not a mini-golf course. You won’t find windmills or astroturf. It’s a massive putting green with hills and valleys and 18 holes laid out in succession. Much like a typical golf course, some holes are short and some are long. So you’ll get a variety of “hit a slow putt down the hill” and “hit the putt as hard as you can over that next hill over there.”

Pinehurst No. 4 Is The Newest Gem

One of the biggest questions asked when visiting Pinehurst: “I know that No. 2 is the course that everyone has to play when they’re there, but I’m planning to play two rounds, so which course should be the second round?” Since the recent overhaul, the answer is likely No. 4.

World-famous golf course architect Gil Hanse was hired to redesign the course. In 2018, Pinehurst No. 4 reopened with a design very similar to the redesign of No. 2. Many say that what Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw did for Donald Ross’s design of No. 2, Hanse did for Ross’s No. 4.

The original character of the course has been restored with many of the similar sandy “waste areas” around the course. So much like No. 2, the sand-and-pine-trees feel that has been the history of Pinehurst has been brought back to No. 4 as well.

The swimming pool at Pinehurst Resort.

It’s Not Just Golf

Pinehurst is a fully functioning resort, so even though golf is at the center of it all, golf isn’t the only activity on the table when you’re staying at the resort.

For starters, Pinehurst’s spa is almost as famous as the golf. There are spa packages just like there are hotel packages, so many couples put together a package where one person spends the day golfing while their partner spends the day at the spa and they meet up for dinner (also included in the package) after their separate activities.

There are many activities beyond the spa and golf packages as well. Pinehurst has competition croquet and lawn bowling courts, tennis courts, a shopping village, pools, bicycle rentals — you name it, they have it. You can review all of the activities at Pinehurst here .

As you can see, Pinehurst has everything you need for an amazing getaway. Even if they don’t golf, bring the whole family; there’s something for everyone.

Pinehurst: 10 things you need to know

pinehurst golf trip tips

It just doesn’t get much better than a golf trip to Pinehurst.

The magic of the place is something we have documented at length and we’ll continue to tell anyone who asks, why this place is so special. But to truly get the most from your visit there are a few things you’ll want to know. Yes, Pinehurst No 2 really is one of the world’s great courses, Pinehurst No 4 isn’t far behind and The Carolina Hotel is beautiful.

But you almost certainly know all that already.

The Carolina Hotel Pinehurst

What we want to do here, is arm you with the tools to go to Pinehurst with a few insider tips, so you notice things you might otherwise miss and allow yourselves to really drink in what makes this place like nowhere else.

So here goes – 10 things you’ll want to know on any trip to Pinehurst .

1. The Cradle Pinehurst

Ok, ok, we know, an obvious choice. We have explained why this was the perfect first experience to find our way at Pinehurst but what is it really like? For those who don’t know, The Cradle is Pinehurst’s 9-hole short course. The holes range in length from around 60 to 130 yards and the quality of the putting surfaces, and everything else for that matter, is as you would find them on Pinehurst’s most acclaimed courses.

The Cradle is as much fun as it’s possible to have with a golf club in hand and shoes are optional. We played in a seven-ball on the day , and a few of the group left their shoes at the starters’ hut. Why? I guess they wanted to feel the turf under their toes. And the sand between them (which they certainly did in the bunkers) – it’s just a reflection of how relaxed this place is. You don’t even need to be a resort guest to play it. PS. The course record is 18 – good luck beating that.

Pinehurst The Cradle

2. The people of Pinehurst

Pinehurst golf resort is special for so many reasons but right at the top of the list are the people who work here. The pride they take in what they do comes through in every interaction and the knowledge and insight they have is right there waiting for you to tap into if you’re willing to take the time to ask. Talk to the shuttle driver who is bringing you to your course. Speak to the front desk manager at your hotel. Or ask questions of the guy or gal who is strapping your golf bag to the buggy. What you likely find is someone who has more than a few stories to tell and someone who will add to your experience of what makes a golf trip to this place so special. Pinehurst looks after its staff too, with all of them able to play any Pinehurst golf course for $5, depending on availability. The caddies of Pinehurst are famously wonderful too and if you’re playing Pinehurst No 2 or No 4, I can’t stress how much you’ll benefit from having one of the team carrying your bag. They can spin a yarn as well as they can read a green.

3. Walk courses, shuttle the rest

Once you check into your hotel at the Pinehurst golf resort, you can stop worrying about transport. The courtesy shuttle buses are brilliant, frequent and you can catch them all around the village free of charge. So, if you’ve just checked in to The Manor and want to hit a few balls at Maniac Hill , just request the shuttle, wait a few minutes and you’ll be there before you know it – what a brilliant service. Don’t get me wrong, walking is nice too, but you’ll be doing plenty of that on the Pinehurst golf courses and during those summer months you’ll be delighted when you feel that cold blast of air conditioning from the shuttle.

4. Pinehurst Brewing Company

After a day on the golf course, or an evening on The Cradle , you’ll have worked up a healthy appetite. Jump on the aforementioned shuttle and ask them to take you to Pinehurst Brewing Co – it’s just a great place to hang out. The building is historic and striking and was once responsible for powering the entire village of Pinehurst. The food is fresh, tasty, and plentiful. The beer menu is extensive and there are cocktails, whiskies, and drinks to suit every taste. The extensive renovation that turned the old steam plant into a modern, vibrant eatery was done with real care. Brick corbeling is still visible, the original arches and windows remain and the interior brick walls are still blackened from the days this building housed huge steam boilers. I had the railroad ribs and they were immense. Go and check it out for yourselves.

5. The clubhouse terrace

Pinehurst golf resort is all about making memories and if you haven’t got a club in hand, there is no better place to do that than by pulling up a rocking chair and drinking in the atmosphere on the clubhouse terrace at the back of the 18th green of Pinehurst No 2 . As you walk along the long and historic corridor which runs through the heart of the majestic clubhouse at Pinehurst, you’ll come to the pro shop on your right and a vast cabinet of some of golf’s most famous trophies on your left. Walk out through those doors, take a seat, and just watch.

Not only will you get to see golfers come down the final hole at Pinehurst No 2 but you’ll likely find yourself surrounded by a few others doing the same. You’ll be joined by family members of golfers playing, fellow golfers and a whole bunch of other people besides. It not only makes for a great atmosphere for those coming down 18 but it’s a brilliant way to immerse yourself in life at Pinehurst. And if you’re feeling hungry, head into The Deuce (means 2, as in No 2) and grab some of the fantastic food there. You can eat at the bar and still look through the windows onto the 18th at No 2. To your right close by, you’ll spot the iconic statues of Payne Stewart , Donald Ross and others who have played such an important part of life here. It’s just a great spot.

6. Thistle Dhu Putting Course

We are huge fans of the Himalayas putting course in St Andrews , but Thistle Dhu is right there with it when conversation turns to the greatest putting greens in the world. Not only is it vast in scale but the undulations are incredible and the whole thing is maintained to the same standard as the greens out on the many Pinehurst golf courses. Right in the centre, you’ll find the statue of the Putter Boy, which is certainly worth a visit. There isn’t a dress code, a green fee and there aren’t rules or regulations governing the games which take place here. It’s just a really fun place to spend a few hours. And a brilliant way to prepare yourself for the speed and undulations you’ll find out on the courses.

7. The Pinehurst refreshments

There is no excuse for not having the drink of your choice in hand at Pinehurst golf resort, there are just so many places to grab something. Yes, of course you’ll get the drinks carts which will come out and meet you as you play your way around, you’ll find halfway huts too but our two favourite places to grab a drink are the aforementioned Cradle Crossing, complete with its deck chairs and fire pits, and the Pinecone, which sits close to the 1st tee at Pinehurst No 2 and serves just about all the drinks and snacks you could dream of. Try a Transfusion cocktail

Here’s the recipe: -3 ounces vodka (around 2 shots) -1 ½ ounces Concord grape juice (or 1 shot) -1/4 ounce fresh lime juice (about 2 lime wedges) -Ginger ale -Lots of ice

8. The Pinehurst golf pro shop

There are pro shops and there are pro shops and the one at Pinehurst is the latter. It’s vast for starters and as you wander around it, you catch the eye of other golfers who all have the same look on their face, which goes something like ‘jeez, I could spend a lot of money in here.’ I just kept thinking when someone asks me what I want for Christmas, my answer will be ‘a shopping trip to Pinehurst pro shop.’ There’s a huge amount of Pinehurst clothing and hats and towels and markers and golf balls, but the service is warm and welcoming, and no one is worried if you just want to go in there to marvel at all the things you wish you could buy.

Maniac Hill, Pinehurst golf resort

9. Pinehurst’s practice facilities

Perhaps it’s no surprise to discover the practice facilities will leave you wanting for nothing at Pinehurst but there is history and significance here too. You see, Maniac Hill at Pinehurst is arguably the earliest formal practice facilities in golf. These days it’s estimated around 10 million golf balls are hit annually at Maniac Hill and if that isn’t enough then consider this: every one of the greats of the game have hit balls right where you are standing – Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods – the lot. Don Padgett Sr, a former director of golf at Pinehurst, said, ‘if you can’t get excited over that, maybe you should take up tennis.’ Amen to that.

10. The little things at Pinehurst

Pinehurst is a place where the details matter. Yes, it’s a golf Disneyland with so many courses and places to play but the little things will give you joy too. Let’s start with the tees, yep, tee pegs. If you’re looking to get hold of some pretty special golf tees, Pinehurst golf resort is the place for you. Pinehurst No 2, No 3 (slightly shorter to reflect the shorter length of the course at no 3), No 4, No 8 and The Cradle all have their own signature tees which you can help yourselves to at the starters’ hut at each course. But there’s more.

At The Nest , which is close to the 10th tee of Pinehurst No 2 you’ll find tees that are different again. In the main Pinehurst golf pro shop, there is a hole in the countertop which you can dip your hand in and grab a bunch of tees. Most of the year, they’re the signature Pinehurst resort tees but during the spring season (March and April) these change to a special pink tee.

Pinehurst Golf Resort things to know

There are ball markers at almost all the courses too, which, like the tees are branded differently depending on where you are. One special mention – on the first day of spring The Cradle releases a spring logo ballmarker with five signature colours – white, pink, green, blue, and yellow. Once they’ve gone, they’ve gone.

Pinehurst golf resort

Last but not least, if you do bring your best golf to Pinehurst and find a way to make a 2 on Pinehurst No 2, there is one more hack you must not miss. Once you finish your round with a 2 on your scorecard, walk off the the 18th green, on to the Veranda and into The Deuce restaurant. Go to the bar and tell them you just made a 2 on Pinehurst No 2 and they will present you with a very special Deuce coin. On the back it is engraved with the words ‘2 on 2 – I’ll drink to that.’

Pinehurst golf resort: frequently asked questions

Why is pinehurst so famous.

Pinehurst is the cradle of American golf and has a rich history and significance to the game of golf in the United States and beyond. No 2 has hosted more championships than any other course in the United States, including the US Open, the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, the US Amateur to name but a few. But its significance and magic comes not because of those championships, but because of the spirit that engulfs this corner of North Carolina.

Where is Pinehurst golf course?

Firstly, Pinehurst is not one golf course, it’s lots of golf courses and actually much more besides. Pinehurst is located in North Carolina, USA. It is around 1hr and 15 minutes south of Raleigh and around two hours west of Charlotte. The most convenient way to fly is to land at Raleigh-Durham International (RDU). Pinehurst offers an airport shuttle service.

Why is Pinehurst 2 so difficult?

Pinehurst No 2 is the most famous and celebrated golf course at the Pinehurst golf resort and one of the most important courses in the United States. It has hosted the US Open on a number of occasions (1999, 2005, 2014, 2024). Its devilish difficulty comes not because of deep rough or huge distances but because of its greens, which many liken to upturned saucers. Their slopes and speed led Johnny Miller to say it was like trying to a land a ball on the roof of a VW Beetle .

Can anyone play Pinehurst #2?

Only Pinehurst resort guests or members are able to play Pinehurst No 2. The same goes for Pinehurst No 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9. If you are not a member or resort guest you can still play Pinehurst No 1, 3, 5 or The Cradle.

Does Pinehurst have rough?

There is a running joke is that there are only two lengths of grass on Pinehurst No. 2 – the greens, and everything else. And to some extent that’s true. There is some growth in the natural sand and waste areas but by no means is there long rough around the greens.

Where will I find the best Pinehurst golf packages?

The answer is the Pinehurst website . For instance they offer a two night, 3 round package, which includes breakfast and dinner daily. Pinehurst isn’t cheap, but you wouldn’t expect it to be for what it offers.

Where can I find a Pinehurst golf courses map?

How about, right here. Pinehurst 1 to 5 and The Cradle, are based at Pinehurst golf resort. Pinehurst no 6, 7, 8 and 9 are a short drive away. But this map gives you a good idea of most of the courses.

Pinehurst golf courses map

What about the Pinehurst golf shop?

The Pinehurst golf shop is incredible. It’s a vast space, with every kind of branded Pinehurst hat, shirt, golf towel, ball marker, tee and golf ball you could dream of. The staff in the shop will be delighted to help should you need anything. It’s the kind of place you could blow a lot of money in.

For a golfer, there’s never a bad time to visit Pinehurst Resort, but the fall, with perfect temps and little precipitation, is particularly sweet. In addition to the famed resort, which will host the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball next year (and another U.S. Open in 2024), and its nine courses, there are at least a dozen other layouts worth playing, starting with the other Donald Ross gems at Pine Needles Lodge/Mid Pines Inn. Both also offer a variety of golf packages with accommodations.

But there’s a lot more to Pinehurst and nearby Southern Pines—located about a 70-minute drive from Raleigh/Durham airport—than just golf. In addition to some unique shops and excellent restaurants, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy, especially for horse lovers.

Turnkey Vacation - Pinehurst No 2

MORNING: Many people think No. 8 is the best course at Pinehurst; there’s no doubt Tom Fazio’s rolling homage to Ross is the most scenic. The green falloffs might even be tougher than No. 2.

AFTERNOON: After lunch in the Donald Ross Grill, tee it up on No. 4, a Ross layout that Fazio redid in 2000 with more than 140 pot bunkers.

OFF-COURSE OPTION: Get the 80-minute “Champion’s Massage” at The Spa. The hot-stone therapy will loosen your shoulders, neck, and upper back, while a golf-ball foot massage will revive aching feet. The spa also has an on-site esthetician and offers high-end facial products.

EVENING: After a drink on the front porch at the Pine Crest Inn, where a chip or three into the fireplace is mandatory, cross the street to Dugan’s Pub for its hearty pub fare, large selection of imported drafts and single-malt scotches, and great golf photos.

MORNING: Located five miles from the village on more rolling terrain, Mid Pines is a treat to play, especially after a 2013 renovation by Kyle Franz that restored the green sizes and sandy scrub to the fairway borders.

AFTERNOON: The charming bar at Pine Needles serves the best burger in town, while the dogleg-rich course, which hosted three U.S. Women’s Opens, just reopened after a greens and bunker renovation.

OFF-COURSE OPTION: The Pinehurst Harness Track is the oldest in the state and features polocrosse, races, jumping shows, and more. If you’d rather ride than watch, visit Carolina Horse Park, Foxtrack Training Center, or Blue Moon Stables.

EVENING: For the best steaks and wine in town, Ironwood is it. Ask for an outdoor table.

Turnkey Vacation - Pinehurst

MORNING: A half-hour north of Pinehurst is the captivating Tobacco Road. Created by the late Mike Strantz, the big, bold course is a visual and strategic feast of blind shots and stormy greens.

AFTERNOON: Lunch at Rhett’s in Southern Pines (try the lettuce wraps or trout sandwich), then tee it up at Southern Pines Golf Club, another Ross jewel that’s a great value. At just 6,300 yards, the intimate design rewards precision rather than brawn.

OFF-COURSE OPTION: The streets of Southern Pines, which started as a railroad station in the late 19th century, have an array of locally owned boutiques and galleries, including the Campbell House, which has monthly exhibits of local, regional, and national artists.

EVENING: At Ashten’s in Southern Pines the food, like the pork schnitzel, is always fresh and excellent (ask for a table in the wine bar).

MORNING: Breakfast at the Track (cash only), then, at last, tackle No. 2. Practice your up-and-downs on the practice green next to the first tee and take a caddie as carts are limited to the path.

AFTERNOON: Relive your round at The Deuce, a new bar and restaurant (go for the Loaded Tater Tots) with memorabilia and views of the famed finishing hole. A trip around the 18-hole putting course, Thistle Dhu, is the perfect way to conclude your experience.

OFF-COURSE OPTION: About 40 miles northwest is Seagrove, “the handmade pottery capital of the U.S.” due to the natural clay deposits. More than 75 potters spin their wheels and sell their wares.

EVENING: Elliotts on Linden is about as farm-to-table as it gets. A couple of miles from the resort, this local institution offers up a variety of tasty dishes from shrimp and grits and seared scallops to lamb and elk in an intimate, country setting.

pinehurst golf trip tips

“Dude, we should do a trip to Pinehurst.”

I suppose I should blame myself. After each trip to Pinehurst I come back boasting about how incredible it is – the village, the Brewery, the Cradle, the Pine Crest, the porch at the Deuce and, of course, all of the golf.

Every trip needs a captain, and having been to the resort about half a dozen times, it was inevitable for me to grab the wheel. Every group has an endless number of “strategists,” but without someone to take action, grand ideas like these usually gather like broken peanut shells on a barroom floor.

So let me take you through the journey required to execute a trip like this, from concept through packing effectively and efficiently and perhaps you might feel inspired and ambitious enough to lead an excursion of your very own.

pinehurst golf trip tips

Pinehurst’s Thistle Dunes

Tip #1: Dates

This was easier than expected. About 10 months in advance, we decided the optimal time to escape would be May 2022 for our group.  Early enough in the year that the trip would shine like a navigational beacon guiding us through the dense clouds of a long, cold Northeastern winter.

But with enough space from when the last filthy snow piles melt to shake off the winter rust, take a few lessons, find our swing for the season and potentially even a repeatable rhythm.

The key in picking a date is to avoid any known land mines. For example:

  • Mother’s Day
  • Anniversaries
  • Notable birthdays (spouse or kin)
  • Family trips, rehearsals, cheerleading comps, concerts, etc
  • Kentucky Derby
  • Work obligations

So, that narrowed the possible dates quite easily. And, ultimately, mid-May 2022 with a Thursday-Sunday stay is what we landed on.

Tip #2: Itinerary

How much golf you play can vary wildly from group to group and really sets the tone for the entire trip as well as influencing who is extended an invitation. Some want to play as much golf as possible – 36 per day, or even more. Some want no more than one round per day, and some maybe even less than that.

Ultimately, the captain needs to decide, although a decision by committee is best so you ensure there’s at least support for the plan.

Every trip to Pinehurst needs to be structured around Course #2 . And the demand to play it has never been higher. The resort recommends planning 12-28 months out at this point to ensure you can challenge your game, and your patience, at one the U.S. Open’s first anchor sites.

Following the restoration of Course #2 , Course #4 was reimagined by Gil Hanse and has become another “must” on any Pinehurst bucket list.

Some prefer to play #2 and #4 early in the trip while their game is predictable, muscles are loose and golf demons are minimal, while others will prefer to “warm up” with rounds on other courses to get a feel for what it takes to play well at Pinehurst.   (The answer to that is short game. You need a reliable short game. And patience.)

From there, fill your itinerary with rounds at the other 7 resort courses, at least one walk around The Cradle and an early or late test on the Thistle Du putting course (which is free by the way).

Also, don’t disregard the other incredible courses not far away. Donald Ross designs, Mid Pines and the recently restored Southern Pines are nearby as is Pine Needles which is preparing to host the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open.

And on the way to and from the Raleigh Airport is Tobacco Road, which is a unique experience all golfers will remember forever. From the blind first tee shot between two massive mounds to the climb back to the understated, cozy clubhouse for a much-deserved Transfusion, it’s target golf at its finest. Be sure to grab a yardage book for your first go around or you’ll be undoubtedly guessing direction and yardage incorrectly more times than not.

Other area favorites are Talamore Golf Resort and Mid South Club , two fun and friendly designs that are great additions for any trip to the area that tend to come in at a more affordable rate as well.

With so many world-class courses in close proximity, any combination of those mentioned above will result in a very memorable trip.

Tip #3: Packing prep

Like with every golf trip, it’s better to over prepare than to be caught by surprise when it rains one day, blisters develop on your heels or you are reminded how quickly sunburns can develop after hibernating indoors all winter.

While the weather at Pinehurst is certainly much more predictable than how you’re going to play, you can still encounter an afternoon thunderstorm, cool mornings or high heat and humidity.

A good rule of thumb for any golf trip is two outfits per day – one for golf and a change for post-round activities/dinner.

Golf shirt and shorts (or pants) are an easy choice for every round, plus a fresh change for dinner each night. Most resorts, including Pinehurst don’t require attire any more formal than what you wore to play golf. They know their audience!

Be prepared to layer depending on the forecast. One or two ¾ zip sweaters, a light vest and a lightweight rain jacket are worth having in the travel bag. Neutral colors are best so you can wear them with several of your outfits.

Golf shoes are critical, especially if you plan to walk any of the rounds, but even if you’re going to ride. You’ll likely have some days where you’re in your shoes for 8-12 hours, so it’s imperative to bring shoes that fit properly and that you can trust. A good rule of thumb is to bring one pair of shoes for every two rounds so you can rotate between them.

No matter where you play, buying shoes that clearly offer waterproof protection is always a good idea. Even if you never encounter rain, morning dew can find the seams or – gulp – holes in your shoes just the same, and nothing destroys a round faster than wet feet and socks. Shoes with 1- or 2-year waterproof warranty won’t cost you much more and will ensure you’re protected from anything you face on the course.

Staying down near the ground for a moment, invest in some new and/or reliable socks. Just as important as shoes, good socks that fit properly, won’t slide into your shoes and wick moisture will be as important as your ability to chip off tight lies.

Other items

• Rangefinder/GPS device

Remove some of the uncertainty from playing a new course by using a device that can help you determine distances to pins and hazards quickly.

• 3-4 hats that can be rotated

You are likely to sweat through, or lose, at least one. So good to have backups. Besides, if you don’t flaunt at least one logo from a top 100 golf course at all times, are you even really a golfer? This being said, plan to come home with 1-2 from this awesome resort.

• At least one new glove for every two rounds.

Like shoes, you want to be able to rotate a few gloves in the event your hands sweat a lot, you develop a hole in one, or you leave one on the table at the Deuce.

*Pro tip: if you are prone to sweaty hands, try FootJoy RainGrip gloves which actually become more tacky as they get wet. You can play comfortably and securely without needing to hang gloves from your cart like a 1950’s clothesline.

• Sunscreen

The sun is strong. Be prepared. Nothing ruins a golf trip faster than a nasty sunburn on day one.

• Sunglasses

Strong sun and lots and lots of sand to reflect it back into your eyes. Good sunnies are key.

• Other items: Band-Aids, snack bars, hydration packets (Liquid I.V., Nuun, etc)

When planning a golf trip, it’s important to be prepared for anything. Even then, you should expect the unexpected.

Fortunately, the world-class staff at Pinehurst is ready and willing to help with anything you might need. Hosting thousands of groups every year, you can rest assured they’ve seen just about anything your group can toss their way.

In writing the Golf Digest Ambush, I've dropped in on 16 buddies trips taking place all over the country. Each trip is different, but there also some similarities. The one consistent observation is that the trip planner gets overlooked, taken for granted and abused. And then it's time to start sorting out details for next year's trip. So Golf Digest held a contest a few months ago. We asked that you nominate your buddies trip planner in a 100-word essay. We asked that you tell us why your trip planner, in all of his or her selflessness, deserved a three-day pampering at Pinehurst, one of the ultimate buddies trip destinations. We picked six winners who we considered the Top Gun of executing the ideal buddies trip itinerary. This contest, and this trip to Pinehurst, was to give a little back to the givers of golf.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2015/07/20/55ad71caadd713143b423357_golf-courses-blogs-wheres-matty-g-Pinehurst_Caddy%20Bib.jpg

Our winners each brought a unique perspective to planning a trip based on their core group, their destination(s) and their priorities. We had Dave Walker of Scarborough, Ontario who has been planning a trip of 100-plus golfers every year for 20 years. His group always goes to Bristol Harbour Resort in Canandaigua, NY in the spring. We had Barbara Berwick, of Marina Del Rey, Calif., who plans the perfect all female buddies trip to Pine Needles. They play for green jackets and they don't put the clubs away when the sun goes down, they play night golf with glow balls. Roy Griffin, of Snellville, GA, is a specialist at getting his group to St. Andrews every year and ALWAYS gets tee times on the Old Course. Bob Sandt, of Park City, UT, has found a buddies trip destination deal in Cozumel, Mexico. Neil Thomson, of Charleston, SC, annually leads his 15 friends to an affordable Sea Island in the shoulder season. And Calvin Weide, of Claremont, NH, knows Myrtle Beach like the back of his worn out golf glove.

Here are some of the pictures and thank you letters we received last week:

As one of the lucky winners of your Pinehurst Trip Planners Contest, I'd like to thank you for making such an incredible experience possible. For the last six years I've made the side trek from my annual buddies trip at Pine Needles (we call it "Almost Pinehurst") to the veranda at the real Pinehurst, to sit in the rockers with a glass of wine, watch the players come up 18, and dream the dream that one day it could be me. I'm working on finding a new dream now.

Although my fellow contest winners (and Matt and Pete for that matter) are not as pretty as the buddies I normally travel with, they did not let me down nonetheless. The trip had all the elements I could hope for. The competition was fierce, yet fun. I was fortunate to be on the winning team, albeit carried the whole way. I was truly queen for three days. (Let's not call the other winners this, though.) I can't thank you and your magazine enough for making this possible.

Thanks again for a memorable weekend under the North Carolina Pines. Golf Digest and the Pinehurst resort treated us like royalty. The perfect combination of having a set-agenda (tee times; private dinners; spa appointments), but also keeping it loose and lively (bikes to the Pine Crest; singing with Clarence Levine; nightcaps at the Ryder Cup Lounge; Matty G's tweets; and catching plenty of snippets of Tom Watson's magical run at Turnberry). Everything transpired at the ideal pace--relaxing, but the competitive juices flowed at the appropriate times.

For such a short trip, I truly think all six winners (plus the two captains) were able to develop some palpable golf camaraderie--and we all benefited from the round-table discussion of our various buddy trips.

On a personal note, I have been relentlessly boasting to my friends and family back here in Charleston, SC. About 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning up there, sitting in the 91st hole snack shack with Ginella--eating the recommended "1st Tee" nutrition bar--shaking off some Pine Crest cobwebs, I did not anticipate putting together my career low round! After a ho-hum 90 at No. 4 the day before, my thought was to somehow break 90 on the daunting No. 2. To be able to fire a 78 (with those North-South Am pins!) I was (and still am) on cloud nine! I think Payne would have respected my par-par-par-par finish. It felt pretty sweet--cracking a Heineken on the 18th fairway, moments before sticking my approach to 10 feet . . . I Just wanted to make my Ponce boys proud!

Anyway, what a capper to wonderful weekend of historic golf; good laughs; and friendships born and renewed. That is what it's all about.

From Calvin Weide :

I had a great time at Pinehurst despite my lack of a short game. I'll be popping one of my many gifts, "Secrets of the Short Game" by Phil Mickelson, in the DVD Player. There is no doubt this will get plenty of play over the next few weeks, months, and possibly years while I search for the perfect game.

I really don't want to know how I was selected, but I'm extremely grateful and will always remember this trip as a highlight of my life. Thanks again for the incredible time.

Roy, Bob, Neil, Dave and Barbara--I enjoyed meeting all of you and hearing your stories about golf and your buddies trips. I hope to be hearing more from you in the future. Each of you were excellent company both during the rounds, and after the rounds, when participating in extra-curricular activities.

From Bob Sandt :

I can't even emphasize what a great time I had with you guys at Pinehurst. It was one of the best trips of my life and I have had some good ones! The trip was first class all the way and you all made me feel very special.

From Roy Griffin :

What a blast we had! The service at Pinehurst could not have been better. It took me about five minutes to get out of the accustomed trip planning, decision making mode, and enjoy the pampering. The entire experience was unforgettable, and certainly something I never would have been able to do without Golf Digest.  Playing Pinehurst  No. 4 and No. 8 was special.  Playing No. 2 is one of those life experiences for a golfer that you check off your short list. The caddy bib with my name on it, signed by all of the great people I shared those three unbelievable days with, is a prized possession. I also picked up some great ideas from the others that will be put to use for future buddy trips.  I still can't believe I was so fortunate to be chosen. Thanks again for an experience that was over the top.

From Dave Walker :

Hi Guys. I arrived home Saturday night and had to carry my bags into the house myself. There were no chocolates on my pillow when I went to bed and the next morning I asked where the buffet breakfast was and was told there were apples and bananas on the table. Oh God, I am back in Realityville. They expect me to work at work and really looked at me funny when I cracked a beer at 10 a.m. Monday morning. I just wanted to take a moment to thank Golf Digest and Pinehurst for the most memorable time. I will share my story with my guys come December when our web site gets cranking for our 21st Annual Watsons Springfest once again.

As you can read, it was clear we accomplished our goal. We pampered and impressed the best of the best. They deserved it.

Pinehurst Golf Trip

Pinehurst Golf Trip:  If you somehow “lucked into” being in charge of organizing your buddy golf trip you know just how much work it can be. Fortunately, there are few things more fun than heading out of town for a few days of golf with all your buddies. So if you are in that unenviable position of outing organizer, let me give you a few ideas for a Pinehurst trip that I have picked up over the years.

Time to man up and plan your golf trip!

While there are tons of great courses in Pinehurst within 6 square miles, we typically play a rotation of about 8. The first trick to planning your trip is to find a good golf travel coordinator. While it is possible to make all of the tee times yourself it is much more efficient, and likely cheaper, to hook into a travel coordinator.

For the past 4 years we have gone through the folks at Talamore Golf Resort.   Andrea has been able to get us preferred rates on a lots of courses, line up our tee times, make sure we don’t get put on punched greens and house us in town homes right in Talamore. For a quick reference their number is 800-552-6292.

Talamore Condos

While I usually only spend about 15 non-sleeping minutes in our condo, they are more than comfortable. Each has a nice TV, kitchen and living room. They come with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 4 beds. Plus a couple of big chairs for falling asleep in!

View from our condo at Talamore

So on to the courses: This year we played Mid Pines, Mid South, Seven Lakes and Talamore: All great courses but each one unique:

Mid Pines: The sister course of Pine Needles where the US Women’s Open is sometimes played. This is an older course with a huge club house (albeit not exactly modern). The layout is a Donald Ross design that is straight forward and pleasing. You will not find any tricked up holes here but plenty of beauty. This was our first year playing Mid Pines and while we all enjoyed it, the conditions were not as exquisite as I expected and that coupled with the fact it is one of the more expensive courses we will likely put it in the every 3rd year rotation.

Mid South:  A staple of our golf trip year in and year out. This Arnold Palmer course has a bit of everything: hills, water, sand, trees and a great new club house. We love this course so much we sometimes play both a morning and afternoon round here (although this year we only played it in the afternoon). The course is private but when you book through Talamore they get you on which is another reason to use an agent.

Seven Lakes: Not your typical fancy Pinehurst golf course but one of our absolute favorites! Seven Lakes is located about 20 minutes from Pinehurst which is one reason we either play it twice on Friday or on the way out on Saturday. This Peter Tufts design is challenging but fair. Personally, I like the course because it feels mature but not old. More importantly, the greens are always in great shape and the staff is awesome. Plus they have a huge club house where 12 guys can chow lunch and drink beers in between rounds. While not as fancy as the other courses we play, it is every bit as good and the laid back setting suits us perfectly.

Seven Lakes Signature Hole

Talamore:  There is nothing like rolling out of bed only 100 yards from the club house which is precisly why we stay at Talamore. A Rees Jones design will dish out all that you can chew. Even from the whites (6,100 yards) this course will test you with a desert full of sand traps and elevation made for a Llama. Yup, you can literally get a Llama to carry your bags.

Talamore Golf Course #18

Getting to Pinehurst: Even though I drive to Pinehurst, I do have a few buddies who fly in. Raleigh-Durham airport is only about 90 minutes away from Pinehurst making it super easy to get to from nearly anywhere.

Night life: While our trip is mostly focused around golf, we do go to “downtown” Southern Pines. Its only about 10 minutes away but we always call Johnny C at Pinehurst Taxi who will run a bunch of us there for $5 a man. Can’t beat that with a DUI stick. Johnny will give you all kinds of suggestions, just tell him what kind of trouble you want to get into.

“Hey Llama-how about a little something for the effort?”

Format: If you are looking for match ideas suited for a bunch of varied handicappers, check out what has worked well for us.

That’s it for this year. Let me know if you have any questions as I would be glad to help.

Disclaimer: I did receive partial rate reduction in consideration for our blog post but it was not a motivating factor in our booking this trip.

More from my site

I know exactly what you are talking about when I am the “lucky” one who gets to choose where the boys go for the next golf vacation. Of the places we went, nothing was more relaxing and luxurious than the Dominican Republic trip I planned for the Punta Espada golf course. We stayed at a gorgeous villa http://www.capcanavilla.net and had the time of our lives. Golf by day, beach, casino, and nightlife by night. I recommend taking a look to you and your subscribers the next time you look for a trip.

70 years ago, Tommy Armour claimed that the practice area at Pinehurst is, “…to golf what Kitty Hawk is to flying.” Given that Donald Ross is credited with inventing the driving range, and changing the way golf is played in the process, the comparison is an apt one. This fully equipped, expertly staffed and meticulously maintained facility is the perfect place to improve your long game, short game and chance of lowering the number on your scorecard while at Pinehurst.

For the best rates and tee time availability, book a stay at Pinehurst on one of our  golf packages . We prioritize tee times for our members and overnight resort guests.  To play courses 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 or 9, you must be a member or resort guest. If you are not a member or resort guest and wish to play courses 1, 3, 5 or The Cradle, you may call (855) 835-0771, opt 5, to book a tee time beginning 1 day before your desired date of play. Walk on tee times are non-cancellable.

Inclement weather policy: Once you have started play, the round must be completed in the same day. Should you decide not to play due to inclement weather conditions, please visit the main golf shop to discuss your options.

Pinehurst Resort by the Numbers

Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina’s famed Sandhills has undergone nothing short of a renaissance over the past decade. From the restoration of No. 2, the opening of The Cradle, the reimagination of No. 4 and the USGA’s Golf House Pinehurst, the past decade has been a whirlwind of activity that has set the golf world ablaze.

Planning a golf buddy or family trip to the Cradle of American Golf is an exhilarating experience. With nine courses, three hotels and a fistful of outstanding eateries, it can also be a bit overwhelming. The resort has an outstanding trip planning service to walk you through the details.

But we’re here well in advance with a host of insider tips to help you pull off the ultimate golf bucket list trip with relative ease.

Best Arrival Day Course: You can make a case for No. 5, an underrated Ellis Maples design that gently pitches and rolls through a residential area across Beulah Hill Rd. from the main golf campus. But the logical point to begin the epic journey that is Pinehurst Resort is the No. 1 Course, completed by Donald Ross in 1901.

The expansive fairway of the par-4 opening hole is an arms-wide-open welcome to the Cradle of American Golf. The dead-straight, par-4 second follows suit, and every hole between it and the par-5 18 th hole encourages golfers to play their absolute best. As a bonus, the 18 th tee box with the clubhouse in the background is the perfect buddies’ trip or family photo opp.

Best Championship Course (other than No. 2 or No. 4): No shocker, here, as No. 8 is situated third among the resort’s courses in the national and in-state rankings. But put Tom Fazio’s Centennial in just about any other state and it’s the best track around. The golf cognoscenti tend to forget just how pure this layout is, and the green complexes, green speed and pin positions rival any tournament-caliber venue.

No. 8 isn’t cut from the same Sandhills aesthetic cloth as No. 2 and No. 4. Rather, Fazio was handed 420 acres of rolling hills and wetlands that required a skillful routing. There are several forced-carry tee shots and aerial approaches into greens, but its brilliance manifests in No. 8’s differentiation from its siblings. An early morning or late afternoon round, here, is a transcendental experience, as each hole corridor is isolated from the next.

Best Course to Revisit (if You Haven’t Played it in Years): The obvious answer is No. 4. In the 70s it was a Robert Trent Jones Sr. course, in the 80s a Rees Jones course and from 1999 to 2017, No. 4 was a highly-ranked Fazio design. The golf course architecture musical chairs ended in 2018 when Gil Hanse completely reimagined and redesigned No. 4 as a “companion” course to No. 2. Hanse’s craftsmanship is so on-point that 19 th hole debates rage as to whether it or No. 2 is the superior circuit.

The not-so-obvious answer, on the other hand? No. 7. Original designer Rees Jones restyled this off-campus course into a Herculean test of golf in 2002. No. 7 is 7,216-yards of pure muscle fiber routed through 25 acres of wetland, three acres of waste bunkers and 75 bunkers. Its 520-yard par-5 opening hole, with a double-bending fairway, sets the stage immediately for “hard par, easy bogey” – a timeless hallmark of Jones family design. Tee shots are generally downhill, approach shots are usually uphill, and Jones’ routing takes on a steady rhythm that makes No. 7 a joy to play.

Best Bar Scene: If golf was a religion (and for many, it comes close), then The Cradle would be its church. On any given day, and especially in the mid to late afternoon, Hanse’s 10-acre short course is humming with golf groups from all over the U.S. and around the world with their shoes off and transfusions in hand.

Music from hidden speakers fills the air, as do tee shots from both grass and mat tees. The experience is collective and redemptive, and by the time golfers walk off the ninth green, they’ve made at least 100 new friends. And when church lets out, the people can simply adjourn to the 75,000-square-foot playground that is the Thistle Dhu putting course.

Best Non-Golf Bonding Experience: The Drum & Quill in the Village of Pinehurst is the type of joint where if the shades were pulled down tight, you’d lose all sense of space and time. The iconic pub and eatery owned by former golf marketer and writer Kevin Drum is as busting and boisterous at lunch as it is at nightfall. Well, maybe not quite. Pull up a barstool, order fish and chips, have the bar keep pull your favorite pint, and forget about what ails you. You won’t regret it.

Meanwhile, back at Pinehurst, the Deuce serves this role and serves it well. Situated on the far side of the main clubhouse, this authentic tavern is located just behind the 18 th green on No. 2. Outdoor seating allows guests to grab a beer and a bite and watch all the action coming in. An ample selection of craft brews are on tap, and everything on the gastropub-focused menu is perfectly executed.

Best Restaurant for Buddies and Family Trips : When the Pinehurst Brewing Company opened in the old Village steam plant in 2018, the vision called for a neighborhood gathering place that was equal parts golf buddy hang and family dining destination. Mission accomplished on that front and throw in a nice mix of local patrons and out-of-town visitors to top it all off.

The “PBC’s” BBQ is front and center, highlighted by smoked baby back ribs, pork shoulder, brisket and homemade sausages. But hand-tossed, wood-fired pizzas are a sneaky second favorite, and pair just as well with the brewery’s selection of handcrafted ales and lagers. The Pivot IPA has become the stuff of legend, and as soon as it hits the taps and coolers (in cans), the supply can be wiped out in a matter of days.

Best Lodging for an Extended Stay: For those who want to play as many Pinehurst Resort courses as possible, i.e. all of them, even a 36-hole-a-day pace yields a five-day, five-night vacation that ventures into “extended stay” territory. The Carolina Villas rise to the occasion to fill this niche perfectly. Located adjacent to the Carolina Hotel, they feature four privately keyed guest rooms with their own bathrooms.

Better yet, the four bedrooms spill out into a spacious living room with a wet bar, dining area, and either a balcony or patio for chilling outdoors. The bed configuration is two queens, with each unit easily accommodating eight golfers or two families. All the modern accouterments are included, such as Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and Keurig coffee makers.

#AskSean: We're Playing Pinehurst No. 2 . . . Got Any Tips to Make Our Round More Memorable?

Golf Travel Tips , Pinehurst Resort , #AskSean

After having the pleasure of playing Pinehurst No. 2 a couple of weeks ago, albeit a less than stellar round of golf on my part, I have a few simple tips that will make the experience that much better for golfers of any skill level.

Pinehurst's Cradle, No. 2, & No. 4

Starting from $428 per golfer per night (Low Season)

»Pinehurst's Cradle, No. 2, & No. 4

#1. walk, don't ride.

Although we opted to take a cart during our round, as our backs decided to flare up on us (Perfect timing!), the thought of walking a bunch was not overly appealing. That said, seeing that Pinehurst No. 2 is cart-path only at all times, there still was a bit of walking (unless you hit it towards the cart path areas, which I certainly did at times, both intentionally and unintentionally).

While riding on the golf cart, both my buddy and I said on several occasions that we would most definitely walk the next time we have the opportunity to play the No. 2 Course. No question. To get the best overall experience and appreciation of the famed Donald Ross design/Coore-Crenshaw renovated course, walking is a must!

Carolina B&B

Starting from $408 per golfer per night (Low Season)

#2. hire a walking caddie.

Caddies certainly aren't for everyone, but along with walking Pinehurst No. 2, having a knowledgeable caddie guide you around the course can only add to the overall experience.

I have always been of the notion to not have a caddie, right or wrong, but I like the idea of figuring things out for myself. That's the way we did it in Scotland at the Old Course, Turnberry, Muirfield, Royal Dornoch, as well as at Pebble Beach Golf Links. That said, hanging out behind the 18th hole of No. 2 watching golfers with their caddies, you could definitely see the added enjoyment they were receiving from their caddies hard work and vast knowledge.
