Who Plays The Borg Queen In Star Trek: Picard Season 3?

The Borg Queen on Star Trek Picard

Season 3 of "Star Trek: Picard" has functioned a bit like a family reunion. As this marks the last time Patrick Stewart will play the role of Jean-Luc Picard, the series has brought together nearly the entire crew of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" for one last adventure through the stars. And, in the last leg of the season, major villains have returned as well, most notably the Borg Queen.

The Borg, terrifying hive-minded and technologically augmented collective who absorb entire worlds, have plagued Picard his entire life. In the darkest chapter of his life, he was even turned into a Borg operative, the notorious Locutus of Borg. And in the 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact," Picard comes face-to-face with the physical embodiment of the hive mind: the Borg Queen.

The Borg Queen has since popped up occasionally across "Star Trek" media, and a version of her was even a central figure in "Picard" Season 2. Now, in Season 3, she returns again, this time played by Alice Krige, the original actor who portrayed her in "Star Trek: First Contact."

Alice Krige reprises her nearly 30-year-old role as Borg Queen

Alice Krige plays The Borg Queen in Season 3 of "Star Trek: Picard." Krige originally played the character nearly three decades ago in "Star Trek: First Contact." In that movie, she time travels to the mid-21st century in order to assimilate Earth into the Borg Collective before humanity has developed the technology to fight them. Picard and the crew of the Enterprise travel back in time to fight the Borg, and they encounter Krige's Borg Queen there.

Krige is a highlight of the movie, playing the Borg Queen as a devil with a deal to make. She tempts the android Data (Brent Spiner) with the possibility of real human sensations and emotions. Meanwhile, she tortures Picard with memories of his time as Locutus of Borg.

Krige reprised the role twice thereafter before joining "Star Trek: Picard," appearing as the Borg Queen in an episode of "Star Trek: Voyager" and voicing the character on an episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."

Additionally, MCU fans may know Krige from "Thor: The Dark World," in which she played the Asgardian doctor, Eir. And horror aficionados may remember her as the sinister Mrs. MC from Netflix's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," and as the cult leader Christabella in 2006's "Silent Hill." The darkness of Krige's roles has taken quite a toll on her, the actor told Looper.

Krige has also appeared in episodes of "NCIS" and "Law and Order: Criminal Intent." Additionally, she played a sex worker named Maddie on five episodes of the Western drama "Deadwood."

Yes, You've Heard That Mysterious Picard Season 3 Voice Before

Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden, Ed Speleers, Star Trek: Picard

This post contains spoilers for the ninth episode of "Star Trek: Picard" season 3.

The Borg Queen is back, baby. According to the "Star Trek" timeline, the all-assimilating villains have spent a suspiciously quiet decade off-screen, but it turns out they weren't gone; they were just evolving. The latest episode of "Star Trek: Picard" gave us the answer to Jack Crusher's (Ed Speleers) origin with a Deanna-delivered info-dump about the Borg's return. It turns out, the aliens didn't just turn Jack into a locator beacon thanks to some Borgy remnants in his genetics, but they also figured out how to assimilate people via transporter.

This explains a lot of what's been happening this season, from the faulty transporters to Jack's visions. The young man has also been hearing a voice in his head, and that turns out to be none other than the woman in charge herself, the Borg Queen. Original Borg Queen actor Alice Krige returns to voice the alien queen bee, and if you hadn't already figured out the season's big twist by the time you heard her, the voice of the actor who first appeared in "Star Trek: First Contact" was a dead giveaway.

Alice Krige returns!

The Borg have been referenced so often in the Paramount+ era of "Star Trek" that it's easy to forget the concept of a Borg Queen doesn't date back to the earliest days of the franchise. Instead, we met the being who's a bit like the Borg's central nervous system for the first time in the 1996 film, "Star Trek: First Contact," with Alice Krige in the role. In her first introduction, the Borg Queen is creepy and ethereal, presented as a bifurcated humanoid form — exposed spinal cord and all — floating down toward Data (Brent Spiner) on tendril-like metal coils.

Krige gives a great performance in "Star Trek: First Contact" as the Borg Queen attaches to her body and ends up in a geeky-flirtatious conversation with Data after giving him the power of sensation for the first time. Later, when she confronts Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), that exchange has a surprisingly romantic charge, too. He discovers she wanted to craft him into Locutus to be "a counterpart" to her, and the Borg Queen comes across as surprisingly human when she grows angry with him and, later, sweetly strokes his face.

Since "Star Trek: First Contact," the Borg Queen's persona seems to have gotten less, well, seductive. She appeared on "Star Trek: Voyager" and was referenced throughout season 2 of "Star Trek: Picard," only for a bait-and-switch plot to reveal that the late actor Annie Wersching's alternate timeline version of the Borg Queen merges with Alison Pill's Agnes Jurati to become a hybrid version of the cybernetic leader. By the time Krige's voiceover appears in Jack's head, however, it's not whispering seductions but prompting him to return to the collective where it says he belongs. "Hear me. Find me," the voice whispers. "We will be together soon, Jack."

More Borg Queen, please

Alice Krige's return to "Star Trek" is a welcome one, but in episode 9, she's a bit underutilized. The actor has the range needed to give the Borg Queen an otherworldly allure that makes us understand how people are drawn to her collective, but here she takes on a more parental role. In fact, several Reddit users confirmed that earlier this season, a similar voice in Jack's head was closed captioned as Beverly Crusher, Jack's mother. The Borg Queen calls to him not as a lover would, but as a parent would. It's a fitting change for the long-fatherless character, but it's also barely explored in the show's rush to the next plot point.

The final episode of "Star Trek: Picard" will surely pull out all the stops, acting as both a series finale and a likely endpoint for some characters whose "Star Trek" journey began over 30 years ago. With that in mind, it's likely we haven't heard the last of Krige's Borg Queen yet, especially given that the Borg is well on its way to taking down Starfleet after a surprise takeover. So far, "Star Trek: Picard" has only scratched the surface of what Krige can bring to the table as the Borg Queen, even via voice acting alone. There's empty nostalgia bait, and then there's Krige's great performance. Hopefully, we'll get a little more Borg Queen action before Picard and his crew inevitably hold the villains at bay one more time.

Picard's season 2 Borg twist just changed Star Trek forever

"Resistance was futile."

preview for Star Trek: Picard Cast vs IRL

Picard season 2 episode 10 spoilers follow.

The Borg assimilated themselves almost immediately into pop culture following their Next Generation debut in 1989. And this disturbing hive mind hasn't really left Picard's thoughts since either. Because after he himself was assimilated by The Federation's greatest foe, trauma from that encounter still lingers, even now.

patrick stewart as jean luc picard, star trek picard season 2 episode 10

But even with all that thrown into the mix, longtime fans were still surprised to see the Borg come to Picard ' s aid at the start of this new season . And that wasn't just any old Borg either.

This new Queen seemed different from anything that Starfleet had encountered before. Yet that didn't stop Picard from trying to blow up his own ship to kill her — and everyone else aboard — without a second thought.

To be fair though, Jean-Luc thought he was stopping the deadliest threat he's ever known from expanding even further throughout the cosmos. But as season two evolved, it soon became clear that this new Borg Queen was actually an ally of sorts, or at least someone he used to consider as a friend.

Fans guessed it early on , but it wasn't until the final episode of season two that Picard revealed this new Borg to be none other than Agnes Jurati, a former crewmate who is now bonded with the Queen.

Throughout the latter half of this season, the pair fought for control over Jurati's body until they finally reached an understanding. Rather than try and assimilate the whole universe without the universe's consent, the pair decided to create a new Borg Collective that embraces the individuality of each distinct member. It's still a hive mind, but not like before. Anyone who joins will do so willingly.

It's impossible to understate what an absolute game-changer that is for Star Trek . Up until this point, the Borg have arguably been the biggest threat that the Federation has ever faced.

The idea of them collaborating with anyone other than themselves was unthinkable. "Resistance is futile," after all. But now a new hybrid Queen is suddenly asking not just for a truce, but to actually join the Federation temporarily.

It's not a trick either. With the arrival of that mysterious transwarp conduit, Borgrati, as we like to call her, realises that an alliance is the best thing for everyone, including her former allies in Starfleet. Something out there created this anomaly, something potentially more powerful than both the Borg and the Federation combined.

alison pill as agnes jurati borg queen, star trek picard season 2 episode 10

There are also some visual clues that suggest Borgrati's intentions are genuine too. Gone are the Borg cube and sphere vessels, now replaced with a more organic design to reflect their evolved way of thinking. Yes, individuals have broken free before, but this is an entirely new Collective, one that transforms the Borg's identity and therefore reputation in this world.

Is there another, more traditional Collective still out there somewhere? Probably yes, perhaps somewhere beyond the Alpha Quadrant, but still, they now have a new capacity for change on a much wider scale than we've ever seen before. So even if the deadly Borg do reappear, there's hope now, especially if Borgrati and her own Collective remain on side.

That seems likely if we look ahead to their role in the future. Because Star Trek Discovery recently revealed that the Borg are no longer a threat in the 32nd century, which implies that the Borg's development in Picard season two will continue to have ramifications for centuries to come.

It's rather fitting that peace with the Borg began here in Jean-Luc's final journey. Given what they once did to him, it will mean a lot for Picard to be the one who helps broker new ties between the Collective and the Federation.

In doing so, the Admiral will leave a lasting legacy of peace beyond perhaps anything else he's accomplished to date. And most importantly of all, it signifies that he will have also overcome his own trauma by learning to finally accept the Borg in their new, evolved form.

Unless everything goes to shit in season three . But even if that does happen, at least we'll have Worf.

Everything You Need to Know About the Borg Queen

Long live the Queen!

Star Trek: Picard

StarTrek.com

“I am the beginning, the end, the one who is many. I am the Borg.”

The central locus of the Borg Collective is the amoral Borg Queen . Through her, like the queen of an insect colony, the Hive mind is granted order and common direction.

As the Villain Showdown enter its fourth week, pitting the Borg Queen against Gul Dukat , we’ve put together this handy guide on everything you need to know about the Queen.

Star Trek: First Contact

The One Who is Many

Throughout the history of the Borg Collective, there have been a number of Queens. Only one Queen exists at any given time; when she is destroyed, a new Queen takes her place. In Star Trek: Voyager, it's revealed that the Borg Queen isn't a singular entity, but the name given to any that serves as its host, possessing all previous Queen's collective consciousness.

The Borg , a fusion of organic and synthetic matter, and their relentless pursuit of perfection brought fear to all quadrants of the galaxy. Residing primarily at Unimatrix One in the Delta Quadrant , the Borg Queen is the only one able to think independently from the Collective; possessing a unique personality and sense of individuality — traits not seen within the Borg.

The first Borg Queen (Alice Krige) made her debut with Star Trek: First Contact (1996) as the Borg sought to erase a historical moment in Starfleet history— First Contact Day —traveling back in time to prevent the creation and need of the Federation .

The Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact

In her lair, the Borg Queen remains disembodied with just her head and spinal column — the epitome of perfection — with no remnants of her humanoid form. When she leaves her home base for assimilation efforts, she will reassemble herself into a predominantly artificial body.

Your Culture Will Adapt to Service Us.

The Borg doesn’t value the Federation’s belief in individuality – its mission is to add others’ biological and technological distinctiveness to their own, strengthening the Collective in its pursuit of perfection. Defeating their opponents isn’t enough; they sought to assimilate their enemies’ minds and flesh.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard still endures residual trauma decades later following his assimilation into the Borg . As Locutus of the Borg, selected to be their voice to facilitate their introduction into human society, Picard believed he never fully regained himself after they striped away his humanity and sense of self.

The Borg Queen in Star Trek: Voyager -

There is No 'Me,' Only 'Us'

It is in Star Trek: Voyager where we learn that the Borg Queen, obsessed with power, didn’t create the Borg; she was just tasked with leading the Collective. The collective consciousness, where each drone is linked through the subspace network, allows for the Borg to adapt quickly and eliminate threats as they arise.

In the episode " Dark Frontier " of Star Trek: Voyager, the Borg Queen believes Seven of Nine 's presence is vital to their path forward in their approach to assimilate Earth, seeing value in Seven's knowledge of humanity. The Borg Queen tries to lure her back to the Collective by "allowing" her to remain an individual instead of reverting to a drone. The Queen's seduction involved telling Seven she's "unique," and her experience will add to their perfection. However, she can't be selfish and only think of just her individual self.

Resistance is Futile.

When a Borg Queen is destroyed, another Queen is propped up. Susanna Thompson portrays the Borg Queen in Star Trek: Voyager ’s two-parter, “ Dark Frontier ” and “ Unimatrix Zero .”

Most recently, the Borg Queen was played by Annie Wersching in Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard .

In Star Trek: Picard , the Borg Queen is cut off from the Borg Collective due the actions of Q and a divergence in time. As a result, she becomes wholly and fully obsessed with Agnes Jurati.

The Borg – history and origins of Star Trek’s most terrifying villain

If you love Star Trek, you're going to want to know all about the history and origins of the Borg as the most fearsome and mysterious villains in the franchise.

Published: Oct 13, 2023

What are the Borg in Star Trek, and what do we know about their mysterious origins and timeline? Let’s get straight into it: there’s a lot to cover.

The Borg are undoubtedly the most terrifying threat faced by Starfleet and The Federation, and they’ve helped to define Star Trek in the cultural consciousness since The Next Generation season 2, which marked their introduction. While they’re best remembered for battling all the best Star Trek characters across the various TV series in the franchise, if you’re rewatching the Star Trek movies in order , you’ll eventually come across them there, too. Their terror isn’t just confined to the best TV series of all time (TNG, in our humble opinion), and their broad history merits some proper investigation. Here’s everything you need to know about the horror of the Borg.

The Borg and their origins in Star Trek explained

The Borg are a cybernetically enhanced collective of various species, all assimilated into a single hive mind.

Other than the Borg Queen (as well as rare exceptions like Hugh and ex-Borg like Seven of Nine), there were no single individuals within the Borg. Instead, much like an ant colony, every Borg drone acted in mindless service of the queen.

A Borg drone in Star Trek TNG

Each Borg drone was also enhanced with cybernetic implants replacing limbs and other biological body parts in order to gain a technological advantage over their opponents and give them additional abilities to analyze technology.

The Borg traveled across the galaxy through Transwarp conduits, which connected various regions of space, in their Borg cube starships. A result of millennia of assimilating various technologies from alien races, the Borg cubes were exceptionally powerful vessels that could withstand assaults from multiple Starfleet ships.

The origin of the Borg is mostly vague, remaining one of Star Trek’s greatest mysteries. But here’s what we do know: they emerged from the Delta Quadrant, having evolved over millennia as an organic and biological race that steadily incorporated technology into their being.

We also know their conquest across the galaxy was slow at first but expanded exponentially as their technology improved and as their numbers grew. To be honest, part of the intrigue and allure of the Borg, and what makes them such brilliant villains, is the ambiguity that surrounds them.

Every time some element of them has been explained (and even, arguably, the introduction of the Borg Queen), it de-mystifies them, which makes them just a little less terrifying. So, to us at least, the less we know about the origins of the Borg, the better.

A complete history of the Borg

The history of the Borg as we know it is long and expansive, but here’s what you really need to know.

First of all, the Borg have been involved with Earth for centuries, beginning with the discovery of a destroyed Borg sphere from 2063 in the Arctic Circle. However, it wasn’t until three centuries later that official first contact was made between The Federation and the Borg in episode ‘Q, Who?’.

In the episode, Q set Picard’s USS Enterprise on the path with the Borg as a punishment for Picard’s perceived arrogance in the year 2365, a year after they were believed to have attacked a series of outposts in the Neutral Zone. Since then, the Borg have targeted The Federation in an attempt to assimilate the technological and biological distinctiveness of the interstellar government.

A Borg drone on Enterprise D in Star Trek TNG

In the year 2366, this culminated in the Battle of Wolf 359 as the Borg attempted to assault Earth, assimilating Picard along the way. In 2373, the Borg traveled back to the year 2063 (leaving behind the sphere in the Arctic Circle) to prevent humanity’s first contact with the Vulcans. They were pursued by the crew of the USS Enterprise-E, who stopped the Borg plan.

There were multiple instances of Borg involvement with Janeway’s USS Voyager in the following years, spurred on by the arrival of Seven of Nine on the ship. In 2378, this came to a head when a version of Janeway from the future traveled back into the past and used future technology to speed up Voyager’s return to Earth, nearly destroying the Borg along the way.

In 2401, the Jurati-Borg reached out to Picard seeking a temporary alliance, and later in the year, the remnants of the main Borg faction attempted to assimilate Starfleet through a new strategy using Picard’s DNA. However, this plot was foiled, and the Borg Queen was finally killed.

Key dates in the history of the Borg:

 • 2063 – The Borg arrive in Earth’s past
 • 2364 – The Borg destroy outposts along the Neutral Zone
 • 2365 – Q instigates the first meeting between Starfleet and the Borg
 • 2366 – The Battle of Wolf 359
 • 2373 – The Borg travel back to Earth’s past in 2063
 • 2378 – Janeway deals a crippling blow to the Borg and brings Voyager back to Earth
 • 2401 – The Jurati-Borg seek peace with The Federation, and the last Borg remnant attacks Earth for the final time

Have the Borg ever been defeated in Star Trek?

The Borg have been ‘defeated’ a few times now, but after the end of Picard season 3, we really can now say: yes, the Borg have finally been beaten.

The last vestibule of Borg strength was led by the semi-destroyed Borg Queen, who spent years rejuvenating her strength from inside her giant Borg Cube. She was hidden inside Jupiter while concocting a plan to assimilate Starfleet from the inside, making Earth and The Federation finally susceptible to being conquered. She was destroyed, though, by Picard and the senior staff of the Enterprise-D after Jack Crusher rejoined his father’s side.

However, that doesn’t mean that all Borg have been defeated. Firstly, we have the Agnes Jurati faction of Borg as established in Picard season 2. They still exist, though are a benevolent presence rather than a malicious one. Secondly, we know that there will still be pockets of Borg scattered throughout the galaxy, across each of the quadrants they’ve branched into.

Anything otherwise wouldn’t make sense: they were interconnected, yes, but their reach was so vast that there’s bound to be some remaining scouts and drones spread across the galaxy. Without the Borg queen, though, whether or not they can re-organize themself into a coherent presence and threat remains to be seen.

Certainly, there could be some story left to tell with these scattered individuals, though, even if it isn’t quite the same Borg threat we’ve all gotten used to.

The Borg Queen in Star Trek first contact

Are the Borg Star Trek’s most important villains?

Since The Best of Both Worlds Part 1 concluded TNG season 3, the Borg have presented the most serious, consistent threat to the Star Trek galaxy, positioning them as the franchise’s most important villains.

They continued to have a presence in TNG, something which would be picked up in the second Picard-led TNG movie, First Contact. Here, they traveled back in time to assimilate Earth in the past, prevent the development of warp technology, and interfere with the first meeting between humans and Vulcans.

The Borg also posed a notable threat in Voyager, menacing the ship as it attempted to escape from the Delta Quadrant. Famously, Janeway formed a pact with the Borg to defeat Species 8472, before ultimately dealing them a devastating blow in the grand finale Endgame.

Still recovering from the combined impact of Janeway and Picard’s actions, the Borg would again return as villains in Star Trek Picard season 3 (and 1 and 2, but let’s just not go there). Now, though, it looks like the Borg’s time as Star Trek’s most important villains could be over after their huge defeat at the end of the season seemed to show them being defeated for good. It could very well be time for new Star Trek villains to arrive.

A História Completa da Rainha Borg em Star Trek: Entenda os SPOILERS de Picard

rainha borg star trek

Star Trek: A História Completa da Rainha Borg

Star trek: the borg's origin explained.

The Borg have long been one of the scariest villains in the Star Trek franchise, and their origins in the Delta Quadrant require a bit of explanation.

Ever since their debut in Star Trek , the fearsome Borg, and their origins, have been one of the biggest mysteries of the franchise. Making their first appearance in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation , the Borg began as a warning from the omnipotent Q, but they quickly blossomed into full-fledged villains in their own right. Intent on assimilating all life in the galaxy, the Borg have gone to great lengths to assert their dominance in all four quadrants of the Star Trek universe. Even their infamous " resistance is futile " catchphrase has been enough to strike fear in the hearts of Starfleet crews for decades.

First seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2, episode 16, "Q Who," the Borg were given a taste of the assimilation fodder in the Alpha Quadrant and spent several years traveling across the galaxy to find it. Every Star Trek: The Next Generation Borg episode portrayed the cybernetic villains as the ultimate evil, and they continued to vex other species into the 25th century in shows like Star Trek: Picard . Despite all their appearances across the franchise, many details of the Borg remain unexplained, and their beginnings are especially mysterious. Aside from their unquenchable thirst for biological diversity, the Borg's vagueness has made them all the more harrowing.

The Exact Origin Of The Borg Are Unknown

While they originated from the Delta Quadrant, the actual history of the species known as the Borg was quite spotty in Star Trek canon. During the events of 1996's Star Trek: First Contact the Borg Queen mentioned that the species started as normal sentient life but had eventually adapted using cybernetic technology. Every time Picard's Enterprise beat the Borg they only learned a little of the species, but Star Trek: Voyager revealed that the Borg had already begun assimilating other life by the Earth year 1400. Thousands of years ahead of human development, the Borg represented the frightening conclusion of a technology-based society.

The First Human Was Assimilated In 2350

Unbeknownst to Starfleet at the time, the first human assimilation by the Borg actually occurred years before Captain Picard made first contact with them in 2365. As shown in Star Trek: Voyager , rogue Federation scientists Erin and Magnus Hansen entered Romulan space in order to study the Borg. Though the Borg were only thought to be a rumor in the late 2340s, the Hansen family staked their professional reputation on finding them. They eventually made contact with a Borg vessel and were transported to the Delta Quadrant of Star Trek 's galaxy . They brought along their daughter, Annika, and the entire family would be assimilated with Annika becoming Seven of Nine.

The Borg's timeline was eventually complicated by the Borg's own temporal incursions, which actually deposited them throughout different times in Earth history. Their first and most dangerous incursion came during the events of Star Trek: First Contact when Borg drones were sent back to the year 2063 to assimilate humanity in the distant past. Though they failed in their mission, their exploits left debris in the past that would later be discovered in the year 2153 during Star Trek: Enterprise season 2, episode 23, "Regeneration." Paradoxes notwithstanding, the Borg have proven their origins in Star Trek have always been flexible.

rainha borg star trek

rainha borg star trek

rainha borg star trek

A Enterprise -D e o Capitão Jean-Luc Picard [ ]

Star Trek Creator Accidentally Reveals Borg Timeline Isn’t What We Thought

For as much as Star Trek has focused on prequel films and television shows that give us deeper backgrounds on almost everything, there are still some major unexplained mysteries. One of the biggest mysteries is who helped to repair and transform Earth’s humble Voyager space probe into V’Ger, an intelligent entity with power on a cosmic scale. The possible answer is quite shocking: according to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, the Borg may be responsible for V’Ger’s transformation.

To understand why this is significant, it’s important to revisit the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode which introduced the Borg. Though the series planted seeds for their appearance back in season 1 episode “The Neutral Zone,” we didn’t actually see them until the season 2 episode “Q Who.” All we really know about the Borg in this episode is that they were located very far away and that (thanks to their ability to assimilate people and technology) the Enterprise was no match for them.

How does this tie back to the Borg Queen? For one thing, this is an idea that would have made more sense if the Star Trek writers had gone with the insectoid idea. Insects like ants have queens, after all, but it never made much logical sense to have a cybernetic Collective of Borg who has no real personality except for a queen who has a mind and motivations of her own.

We Still Know Almost Nothing About The Borg’s Origins

Later Star Trek episodes and films would reveal more information about the Borg, including where they are from (the Delta Quadrant) and who leads them (the mysterious Borg Queen who may or may not exist outside of time and space). Still, for all these revelations, we never got a definitive idea of what the Borg homeworld is and what it is like.

By comparison, those “worst” movies are actually fully in the spirit of the franchise. The Motion Picture is “boring” to some fans because it eschews action in favor of exploration and understanding. The movie’s marketing proudly proclaimed that “the human adventure is just beginning,” and that film was the last Star Trek movie to emulate the human adventure of The Original Series.

Were The Borg V’Ger’s Mechanics?

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry once made a surprising connection between the introduction of the Borg and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. After “Q Who” came out, Michael and Denise Okuda claimed Roddenberry “half-jokingly speculated” that the Voyager 6 probe launched from Earth was repaired by what “might have been the Borg homeworld.” This led to the creation of V’Ger, the intelligent and powerful force that Kirk and Spock make contact with.

For Star Trek fans who remember The Motion Picture very well, this theory about the Borg isn’t as crazy as it might sound. After Spock makes contact with V’Ger, he describes seeing “a planet populated by living machines” with “unbelievable technology.” Not only does this sound a lot like the Borg, but Spock also mentions how this entity “has knowledge that spans the universe,” which would make sense if V’Ger had access to the knowledge the Borg have gained through assimilation.

Furthermore, this Star Trek movie mentions how V’Ger’s “creator is a machine,” which certainly makes it sound like the Borg (as perhaps the galaxy’s foremost technological experts) turned a lifeless Earth probe into a very sentient, very powerful entity. Kirk even speculates that after disappearing into “what they used to call a black hole,” V’Ger “emerged somewhere on the far side of the galaxy and fell into the machine planet’s gravitational field.” It’s admittedly surface-level stuff, but “machine race on the far side of the galaxy” certainly sounds like a description of the Borg.

Did V’Ger Go Where Voyager Went?

Though Star Trek has most certainly overused them, no foe has been quite as frightening as the Borg, the cybernetic monsters that assimilate individuals and entire worlds into their collective. For all their scariness, the Borg have a frustrating habit of only sending one ship at a time, and Starfleet’s difficulty fighting back has made it completely clear that all these soulless drones would have to do is send a second Borg cube to completely annihilate the Federation. The fact they never do seems to be a plot hole, but one tantalizing fan theory is that the Borg are deliberately farming the Federation out to gain new technology.

The Borg Aren’t Known For Their Benevolence

It’s one of the cooler franchise theories courtesy of the Star Trek creator himself, but honestly, this theory doesn’t hold much water (replicated or otherwise). Spock speculates that “the machine inhabiters found [V’Ger] to be one of their own kind, primitive yet kindred,” and that the machines transformed Voyager 6 so that it could complete its original data collection mission in the most optimal way before returning to Earth. None of this, from taking an interest in a low-tech probe to helping someone (even a fellow machine) out of the goodness of their bionic hearts doesn’t sound like the Borg we know and loathe.

At any rate, this may be a moot point because, in the decades since the Star Trek creator speculated about a connection between V’Ger and the Borg, the timeline for when Starfleet first encountered these creatures has gotten far muddier. For example, the Enterprise episode “Regeneration” shows early Starfleet captain Archer encountering Borg survivors from First Contact (although they never declare themselves as such). The Voyager episode “Dark Frontier,” meanwhile, confusingly established that Seven of Nine’s family was working on researching the Borg in conjunction with Starfleet a decade before “Q Who,” though Starfleet mostly thought of the villains as nothing more than “rumor and sensor echoes.”

In other words, it’s difficult for even Star Trek writers, much less fans, to get a good idea about the origin of the Borg and their earliest encounters with humanity. In my mind, revising their past through retcons (gentle and otherwise) is perfectly fair game, and Roddenberry’s theory about V’Ger getting repaired by the Borg is back on the table.

The Borg Timeline Is A Confusing Maze

Star Trek fans constantly debate which of the films are the worst: for the original films, The Motion Picture was a disappointment from the very beginning, with critics derisively labeling it “The Motionless Picture” because it was so boring. For Next Gen films, some think Insurrection is the worst for similar reasons, including that it’s too boring and doesn’t offer us the spectacle (albeit a trainwreck of a spectacle) of Nemesis. But here’s something that critics of these Star Trek films always overlook: rather than being the “worst,” these films are secretly perfect because they uphold the ethos of the franchise.

Blame It On The Borg

If nothing else, this would mean that fans who found themselves bored to tears by V’Ger’s whole story in The Motion Picture can now blame their boredom on the Borg. For such fans, seeing Picard go full-action hero in First Contact and snapping the Borg Queen’s twitching, robotic neck will now be more cathartic than ever before.
