Pin Safari Tabs

A pinned tab stays over on the far left of Safari’s tab bar, and it also shrinks. Whereas regular tabs change size, and only display a few letters — if that — of their title when you have lots of otters tabs crowding the bar, a pinned tab can always be seen. It turns into a little square, with a large letter on it to help you pick it out. This full badge will always be visible at the end of the tab row, and you can pin multiple tabs if you like.

How to pin a tab in Safari on Mac

Right click and choose 'Pin Tab.'

There are two ways to pin a tab in Safari on the Mac. The first is to just right click on the tab you want to pin, and pick Pin Tab from the pop up menu. You can unpin a tab in the same way.

The second way is just to click and drag on the tab, and keep dragging it left until it shrinks and pins itself.

Both methods do the same thing, and both are interchangeable.

Still hard to spot

Safari uses little letters to label the pinned tabs, which means that they’re still hard to spot if you have more than one or two pined tabs. Safari really would be better if it used favicon to identify tabs, like Google’s Chrome. There’s an app which can force Safari to do this , but it’s a clunky workaround at best.

Still, even without favicon, it’s much easier to find your most-used sites when they’re pinned.

How to Quickly Access Sites in Safari on a Mac Using Pinned Tabs

Learn how to pin tabs in Safari to make sure your favorite sites are always accessible, without cluttering the tab bar.

Safari, the default web browser across all Apple devices, is a pretty decent yet underrated browser. Since its release in 2003, Apple has continuously updated Safari with efficiency in mind to ensure that users have the best internet experience.

One of the most basic customizations that you can do in Safari on a Mac to make browsing more efficient is pinning the websites you frequently visit. Read on to learn how to create and manage your pins.

What Is a Pinned Tab?

Pinned tabs or sites are visual shortcuts of websites that you frequently visit or use. Pinning tabs allow you to save time from manually opening each site. It also prevents you from accidentally closing them.

Pinned tabs stay in place even when you close and relaunch Safari or open a new window. This may come in handy when you work across several windows and need to access specific sites quickly.

When you click on any link from the pinned tab, the website will open in another tab, ensuring that your pinned tab will stay in place. Another cool thing about pinned tabs is that they refresh on the background, which means they’re always up to date.

How to Create Pinned Tabs in macOS

Before trying this feature, know that it only works in Safari running on OS X El Capitan and later.

Pinning tabs in Safari is pretty straightforward. Just open a website you frequently visit, then drag the tab to the leftmost side of the tab bar and release your hold when the tab shrinks, displaying only the website’s initial or icon.

Alternatively, you can Control-click or two-finger-pad on the tab, then choose Pin Tab .

How to Manage Pinned Tabs

Now that you’ve created your pins, manage them by doing the following:

  • Remove Pinned Tabs: Unpin a website by clicking and holding the pinned tab and dragging it to the right side of the tab bar. Another option is to Control-click or two-finger-tap the pinned tab and choose Unpin Tab .
  • Duplicate Tabs: If you want to open the same pinned website in another tab, Control-click or two-finger-tap the pinned tab and click Duplicate Tab . The pinned site will open in a new tab.

An Alternative to Pinned Tabs

Suppose you need some organization in Safari but don’t like your tab bar to be cluttered. Well, you also have the option to bookmark websites instead of pinning them.

To bookmark a site, just click the Share button (the box icon with an upward pointing arrow) then click Add Bookmark . Bookmarks are also accessible like pinned tabs. Just click the Sidebar icon on your toolbar to access your bookmarked sites.

Compared to pinning tabs, bookmarks allow you to organize sites into folders, which can come in handy if you use several websites for specific tasks, workflows, and projects. Saving and bookmarking multiple tabs at a time is also very easy with Safari.

Your Favorite Websites Are a Tap Away

If you use Safari to check on specific sites on a daily basis, pinning them is a great way to instantly access them whenever you need to. While it seems like an unnecessary perk, having a less cluttered tab bar can actually do wonders for your workflow.

How to pin tabs in Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Safari has a Pin Tab feature that allows you to ‘pin’ frequently visited websites that always stay in place, letting you access them quickly. These tabs remain pinned even if you open a new Safari window or quit and relaunch Safari.

In this tutorial, we show you how to pin and unpin Safari tabs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Opening links inside pinned tabs

Most links on a web page are of two types – one that opens in the same tab ( like this one ) and another that automatically opens in a new tab ( like this one ).

Irrespective of what the website administrator has set, any external website link you visit in a pinned tab always opens in a new, separate tab.

For example, suppose you pinned an iDB post in Safari. Now, if you visit any other iDB link from that pinned post, it will open in the same tab (unless the iDB author has set that link to automatically open in a new tab). However, if that pinned post has a link to some other site, like Apple.com , and you tap it, that other site will always open in a new tab, irrespective of whether the iDB author has set that link to open in the same tab or a new tab.

In other words, a pinned website stays pinned unless unpinned. Therefore, a link to a different website from a pinned tab always opens in a new tab.

  • Visit this Apple.com link, and it will open in the current tab.
  • Next, use the back button to come back here and pin this iDB post in Safari.
  • Now, click the same Apple.com link above, and it will automatically open in a new tab. This way, iDB always stays pinned even when you visit another website via it.

Pinned tabs stay even if you quit and reopen Safari

Once you have pinned a site, it will remain pinned even if you close Safari and reopen it later or restart your device.

Pinned tabs stay even if you open a new window

After you have pinned a website, it appears as a pinned tab even if you open another Safari window on Mac or iPad. However, tabs already pinned in a standard window won’t appear if you open a private Safari window.

Pinned tabs in private Safari window

You can pin tabs in private Safari windows. But there are a few things to note.

I found that if you pin a site in a private Safari window, it appears pinned even if you open another private window. However, once you close all private windows or quit and reopen Safari, tabs pinned in the private window are gone. In short, pinned tabs in a private Safari window on Mac stay only for that particular private session.

Unlike Mac, I witnessed a different story in Safari on iOS. Sites I pinned in a private session in Safari on iPhone stayed pinned even after I went out of private browsing or quit and relaunched Safari.

Pinned tabs don’t sync over iCloud

Unlike bookmarks, Favorites, and other settings, pinned tabs in Safari don’t sync to your Apple devices. That means if you pin a site in Safari on your Mac, it doesn’t appear as a pinned site on your iPhone, iPad, or other Mac.

Pinned tabs in Tab Groups

With iOS 16, you can even pin tabs inside Tab Groups. The steps are the same as above. Create a new Tab Group , and you can pin sites here. Anytime you return to this Tab Group, your pinned sites will be there for you.

This is how you can pin tabs inside Safari on your Apple devices. Besides pinning, you can also bookmark important sites to save them for later reference. And for even quicker access, consider adding sites as favorites !

How to Pin a Tab in Safari

Apple added a new feature to Safari in El Capitan (OS X 10.11): The ability to pin tabs in the browser. This keeps your frequently used sites updated in the background and easily accessible in the browser.

Safari's pinned tabs have a couple of cool features not found in other browsers. Pinned tabs are persistent across all Safari windows . That means if you open a new Safari window or even quit Safari altogether, your pinned tabs will stay in place and still be accessible when you open a new Safari window. Sites in those pinned tabs also stay active, so you can get push notifications from apps like Slack or access the most up-to-date page from a pinned news site.

Pin and Unpin a Tab in Safari

There are a few ways to pin and unpin a tab:

  • Right-click on the tab and select "Pin Tab"

To unpin the tab, right-click again and choose Unpin Tab.

  • Go to Window > Pin Tab. This is your only option if you only have one site open in Safari.

Choose Window > Unpin Tab to unpin it.

  • Drag the tab to the left side of the Safari window. You'll drag it until it becomes a small tab with just the site's favicon or initial in the tab bar.

Drag the pinned tab to the right side of the window until it looks like a normal tab to unpin it.

You reorder your pinned tabs by dragging them before or after other pinned tabs in the browser.

What to Know

  • Launch Safari . If you don't see the tab bar, go to the View menu and choose Show Tab Bar .
  • Go to a favorite website. Right-click or Control+click the tab bar . Select Pin Tab .
  • To remove a pinned website, Control+click the pin and select Unpin Tab > Close Tab .

This article explains how to pin websites in Safari and macOS and how to remove a pinned website from the tab bar. This information applies to macOS 10.11 and Safari 9 and later.

How to Pin a Website in Safari

OS X El Capitan introduced several Safari improvements, including the ability to pin your favorite websites. This puts the site's icon in the top left section of the tab bar , allowing you to pull it up with just a click. Websites you pin in Safari are live; the page refreshes continuously in the background.

Site pinning only works on the tab bar. Follow these steps to make it visible and pin a website to it:

Launch Safari.

If you don't see the tab bar, go to the View menu and select Show Tab Bar .

Navigate to one of your favorite websites.

Right-click or control-click the tab bar, and select Pin Tab from the pop-up menu that appears.

You can also pin a website by dragging its tab to the left side of the tab bar and dropping it into place.

Safari adds the current website to the pinned list at the far-left edge of the tab bar. If the site has an icon, this symbol appears on the tab.

To return to the pinned site at any time, click its pin icon.

How to Remove Pinned Web Sites From Safari

Here's how to remove a pinned website from the tab bar.

Control-click the pin for the site you wish to remove.

Select the Unpin Tab option from the pop-up menu.

Alternatively, you can drag the pinned tab to the right side of the tab bar or go to Window > Unpin tab .

To remove the tab and close the page, click Close Tab .

Beyond the Basics of Pinned Web Sites

Pinned tabs are a part of Safari and not the current window. When you open additional Safari windows, each one has the same group of pinned sites ready for you to access.

Pins are very useful if you visit many websites with content that continually changes. Useful applications for pinned tabs include web-based mail services and social media sites like Facebook , Twitter , and Pinterest.

How to Pin Tabs on Safari

It's free and super easy to set up

Safari is one of the most popular web browsers, and for good reason. It offers a sleek design, fast browsing, and numerous features that make web surfing more efficient. One of these features is the ability to pin tabs. Just as you might pin a note to your desk, you can pin a tab in Safari to keep it at the forefront of your browsing experience. This article will guide you through everything you need to know about pinning tabs in Safari.

Understanding Pinned Tabs in Safari

Before getting into the nitty-gritty details of how to pin tabs in Safari, it's important to understand what a pinned tab is and how it differs from a regular tab. When you pin a tab in Safari, it shrinks to a small icon-like representation on the left side of the tab bar. This allows you to keep important tabs visible at all times, without taking up valuable screen real estate. Additionally, pinned tabs have some unique behaviors that make them ideal for certain use cases.

Benefits of Pinning Tabs

Pinning tabs can be useful in a number of scenarios. For example, you might pin a tab containing your email inbox, so you can always see when new messages come in. Or you could pin a tab with your favorite news site, so you can quickly check for updates throughout the day. Another benefit of pinned tabs is the fact that they persist across browser windows and restarts. This can be particularly handy if you have a collection of tabs that you use frequently and want to access quickly.

If you're someone who likes to keep a lot of tabs open at once, pinned tabs can also help you stay organized. By designating certain tabs as "pinned," you can easily distinguish them from other tabs and avoid accidentally closing them. This can save you time and frustration, particularly if you're working on a project that requires you to switch between multiple tabs frequently.

Limitations of Pinned Tabs

As useful as pinned tabs can be, they do have some limitations. For example, pinned tabs don't display the full title of the page they represent. This can make it challenging to identify tabs at a glance, particularly if you have several pinned tabs. Additionally, some websites may not be optimized for pinned tabs and may have unpredictable behavior when pinned. However, despite these limitations, many users find pinned tabs to be a valuable addition to their browsing arsenal.

One potential workaround for the issue of truncated tab titles is to use emoji or other symbols in the tab title. This can help you quickly identify the tab you're looking for, even if the title is cut off. Additionally, some users find it helpful to group related tabs together in a specific order, so they always know which tab to click on first.

Another limitation of pinned tabs is that they can sometimes interfere with other browser features. For example, if you have a lot of pinned tabs, they may take up so much space on the tab bar that you can't see the full URL of the page you're currently viewing. This can make it difficult to know if you're on a secure website or not. To address this issue, you can unpin some tabs or use Safari's "Show Full Website Address" feature, which displays the full URL in the address bar.

Overall, pinned tabs can be a powerful tool for staying organized and efficient while browsing the web. By understanding their benefits and limitations, you can make the most of this feature and customize it to meet your specific needs. Whether you're a power user or a casual browser, pinned tabs are definitely worth exploring in Safari and other modern browsers.

How to Pin a Tab in Safari

Now that you understand what pinned tabs are and how they work, let's dive into the details of how to actually pin a tab in Safari. The process is relatively straightforward, and can be accomplished in just a few clicks.

Pinning a Tab on macOS

To pin a tab in Safari on macOS, follow these steps:

Open the desired website in a new tab.

Click and hold on the tab you want to pin.

Select "Pin Tab" from the context menu.

The tab will now be pinned to the left side of the tab bar. You can click on it at any time to bring up the corresponding page.

Pinning a Tab on iPadOS

The process of pinning a tab on iPadOS is slightly different, but still simple. Here's what to do:

Swipe left on the tab you want to pin.

Select "Pin" from the options that appear.

Like on macOS, the tab will now be pinned to the left side of the tab bar.

Managing Pinned Tabs

Now that you know how to pin tabs in Safari, it's important to know how to manage them. After all, if you end up with too many pinned tabs, they can start to become unwieldy!

Rearranging Pinned Tabs

If you want to rearrange the order of your pinned tabs, you can do so by clicking and dragging them to a new position. This can be useful if you have a particular order you like to keep your tabs in, or if you want to group similar tabs together.

Unpinning Tabs

If you no longer need a tab to be pinned, you can unpin it by right-clicking (or Control-clicking) on the tab and selecting "Unpin Tab" from the context menu. Alternatively, you can drag the tab away from the pinned area and it will become a regular tab again.

Updating Pinned Tab Icons

By default, pinned tabs display an icon representing the website they correspond to. However, in some cases, this icon may be outdated or incorrect. To update the icon for a pinned tab, simply right-click (or Control-click) on the tab and select "Reload Pinned Tab". This will refresh the tab and update the icon to the current one for that site.

Keyboard Shortcuts for Pinned Tabs

If you're a power user, you may want to take advantage of keyboard shortcuts to make managing your pinned tabs even easier. Here are a few of the most useful shortcuts:

Navigating Between Pinned Tabs

Use Command + [number keys] (e.g. Command + 1, Command + 2, etc.) to quickly switch between your pinned tabs.

Pinning and Unpinning Tabs with Shortcuts

Use Command + Shift + P to pin or unpin the currently active tab.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Despite Safari's generally smooth performance, there can be some issues that arise when using pinned tabs. Here are a few of the most common issues, along with potential solutions:

Pinned Tab Disappears After Restart

If you find that a pinned tab disappears after you restart Safari, it may be due to a glitch in the application. Try unpinning the tab before quitting Safari, then pinning it again once you reopen the browser.

Pinned Tab Not Loading Correctly

Sometimes, Safari may have trouble loading a pinned tab correctly, particularly if the website has recently undergone changes. To fix this, simply unpin the tab and reload it as a regular tab. Once it's loaded correctly, you can try pinning it again.

Wrapping Up

Now that you know how to pin tabs in Safari, you can take advantage of this handy feature to streamline your browsing experience. Whether you're pinning tabs for quick access to your email, news, or any other frequently visited sites, Safari's pinned tabs can help you stay productive and efficient.

What Does Pinning a Tab Do in Safari?

pin safari menu bar

The ability to pin a tab in Safari is not a new feature, but it may be one that you have never used. Mac users may be wondering what pinning a tab is all about: What does it do? Why would you want to pin a tab? Users also have other questions about pinning Safari tabs, like: How many tabs can you pin? Do pinned tabs use much memory?

Some may also wonder if you can pin tabs on iPhone or iPad; you can not. However, iOS and iPadOS do offer other options that can help you keep and arrange tabs, such as tab groups. In this article, we will address questions about pinning tabs for Safari users on Mac. First up is the most basic question: How do I pin a tab?

pinned tabs in safari

How to pin a tab in Safari

Open the website you wish to pin in a tab in Safari. There are a couple of ways to pin the tab:

  • In the tab bar, grab the tab and drag it to the far left side of the tab bar.
  • You will see your tab shrink into a square-shaped tab. Release the tab.
  • Alternatively, with your desired tab selected in Safari, go to the top menu bar and click on Window . Select Pin Tab .

How to unpin a tab

Again, there are a couple of ways to unpin a tab:

  • Hover your cursor over the pinned tab and right-click ( Control – Click ). Select Unpin Tab from the menu that appears.

unpin a tab menu

  • With the pinned tab open in Safari, select Window in the top menu bar and click on Unpin Tab .

How to delete pinned tabs

To delete a pinned tab, first, unpin the tab, then close the tab.

What happens when you pin a tab?

The pinned tab will stay in your tab bar in Safari. It won’t take up much space in the tab bar, and so it is a convenient way to keep a website handy while you are working. It will also be there the next time you open Safari unless you unpin the tab.

There is another advantage to using pinned tabs. If you have a tab pinned in one Safari window, the pinned tab will also be there in any other Safari window you open, and all instances of the pinned tab will be the same. In other words, if you have two Safari windows open, the pinned tab will sync between the two Safari windows; you won’t just have two different versions of the same website like you would with regular tabs. This can be really convenient if you like to use multiple Safari windows.

Do pinned tabs use memory?

They do use some of your RAM and CPU resources. Just like if you are using many (regular) tabs in Safari, having many pinned tabs could potentially have an impact on your Mac’s performance. The effect really depends on the websites you have pinned.

Do pinned tabs stay open?

Pinned tabs stay in Safari while you have it open, and they return after you close and reopen your browser. You may want to be cautious about relying too much on pinned tabs; some users have had trouble in the past with losing their pinned tabs after macOS updates.

How many tabs can you pin?

You can pin multiple tabs in Safari at the same time. I’m not sure if there is a limit, but I have tested up to 20, and I don’t imagine you should need more than that. Safari does offer other options for saving and organizing websites, such as bookmarks and a reading list if you have many websites to keep track of.

How to pin items to the menu bar on Mac

The menu bar is a vital component of a MacBook’s interface, and it appears as a slender strip at the top of the screen. It offers access to various system and application functions, so improving your mastery of using this tab can boost productivity and streamline your workflow. To discover how you can pin items to the menu bar on your Mac, follow along with this article.

Benefits of pinning items to menu bar

  • Quick access: It provides quick access to the items you need. It eliminates the need to navigate through the file system or search for them in the start menu or launchpad.
  • Customization: Once you pin your desired apps on the menu bar, you can rearrange items by simply pressing the Cmd key (⌘) and ordering the pins using the trackpad or external mouse.
  • Multitasking: By pinning frequently used applications, users can quickly switch between them without the need to minimize or close other windows.

What types of items can you pin to the Menu bar?

  • System control items : These include system controls such as Bluetooth, AirDrop, Screen Mirroring, etc.
  • Control Center Modules: You can choose when to make them visible (intervals) on the menu bar.
  • Other modules: These are items that can be made visible both on the menu bar and Control Center.
  • Third-party apps: Many apps come with the support of menu bar icons. Read our article to find out the best free menu bar apps for Mac .

How to pin control center items to Mac menu bar

Click on Control Centre and select an item from the pane

You can also switch the positions of the added icons according to your convenience by pressing the Command key (⌘) on your keyboard and dragging them.

How to add items to menu bar in macOS Ventura or later

Click apple logo and select system settings

Follow below mentioned steps based on the module and features you want to display.

Add Control Center Modules to the menu bar

You can click on the drop-down menu next to the tab and choose your desired option. The available options are:

Select show in Menu Bar or Don’t Show in Menu Bar

In case you change your mind and remove items from the menu bar, you can just select Don’t Show in Menu Bar from the drop-down menu.

Other modules

Go to Control Center and toggle on the button next to Show in Menu Bar

To remove these options from the menu bar, you can just toggle off the button next to each function.

Menu Bar Only

Head to Control Center, click the drop-down next to items under Menu Bar only, and select Show in Menu Bar or Don't Show in Menu Bar

The number of items you can pin to the menu bar on a Mac isn’t fixed. However, keep in mind that adding too many items will make the menu bar cluttered and more difficult to use.

Not every item on a Mac can be pinned to the menu bar. The menu bar can only be pinned with apps, folders, and specific system options.

No, the appearance of the items in the menu bar cannot be changed on a Mac. The application or the Mac settings determine how an item will look.

how can I make safari menu bar visible

The menu bar in Safari goes away and comes back after hovering. I want it to stay but cannot find the command to have it remain visible.

Should be a simple fix but......?

Since I am complaining (a daily practice for most) is there a way to make the whole bar bigger ? Change the size of the fonts, and even have the icons with their respective names?

With Windows since the Dos 5 and migration is slow for us old guys, as I now am going to buy an IMac .

Happy New Year

Thanks. That answers my first part. I now have an ALMOST full screen WITH the menu on top. Well done.

Is there a way to make those menu fonts bigger?

Is there a way to make the icons bigger?

Is there a way to put words NEXT to or WITH those icons?

I am simply tired of having to memorize everything, like shortcuts, F numbers, icons, etc.

Dec 31, 2013 4:13 PM in response to LenInSebastopol

Well, that's a start. I, too, find the fonts too small on some of my newer Macs. I get around it by doing System Preferences > Displays > "Display" Tab. Check the button that says "Scaled." Other resolutions will then be available. Select one that has smaller numbers than the current setting: Example. If your current setting is 1280x800, you should have an option for 1152x720--try it. Everything will be bigger at the latter setting.

I do not know if this works with Retina displays. I don't think they use Retina on the MacBook Air. I have done this with my 13-inch macBook Pro non-retina with no loss of sharpness.

I'm out most of the evening--will check back in the morning with more stuff.

It worked!. Everything is a bit larger for these old eyes and now that I can see it, it's gone back to the original problem of the Menu bar disappearing when fully opened. I gather I am not in heaven yet , so perfection is a bit out of grasp at this time.

Thanks for the help. Tonight I ordered the IMac so it should arrive in a week or so. Your quick response was an inspiration in my determination towards immediacy. I was going to wait, but you were on the spot so I figured, "why not too".

Hope you woke up feeling well from the New Years Eve outting . For me, 9PM and off to bed... . no time for amatures .

Jan 1, 2014 9:26 AM in response to LenInSebastopol

I survived! We led the music for New's Years Eve Mass at 5:30PM and then headed straight to dinner theater with friends. I'd hoped to be home by 10 or 11 but we decided to watch the new year come in with said friends. I didn't wake up until around 8AM today but, having ingested only token amounts of the fermented grape last night, am in fine shape!

I looked at an older version of Safari on a 2004 PowerMac I keep active and, as far back as version 4, there was no option to show button names with the icons. If that is important you can look at FireFox or some of the other browsers. FireFox still has the text/icon/text+icon option:

User uploaded file

FF is here:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

Even with changing the screen resolution, there is one more helpful function within Safari for those of us with the wisdom of age and the vision problems to match. From Safari's View menu:

User uploaded file

choose "Customize Toolbar..." to get this screen:

User uploaded file

Note the "A" icon pair. Drag this combo to your toolbar and you have a zoom command available in case some sites (Apple is notorious for this) use a too-small font. In conjunction with this icon combo, you can also instruct Safari to zoom the entire screen or just the text, using an option near the bottom of the "View" menu.

What size iMac screen did you order? I have a 2010 27-incher and have the desktop resolution set to 1920x1080, down from its default of 2560x1440. My wife's 21.5-inch 2011 has a default of 1920x1080 so is usable for my eyes as is.

Remember when choosing from the array of resolutions offered that some are for external monitors that may not have the same aspect ratio of width:height as the built-in display. For fully filling the display without cutting off the ends of the desktop or distorting it, you need a res that has a 16:9 ratio. The quick way to check is with a calculator. If you divide the larger res number by the smaller, any combo that will work on your 16:9 iMac monitor will have a quotient of 1.777777...

2560 divided by 1440 = 1.777777...

1920 divided by 1080 = 1.777777...

a quick check with the calculator will insure you have the best image fit to your screen.

Well that grew long. TIme for the morning walk! May 2014 bring good things to you and yours!

Jan 1, 2014 10:21 AM in response to LenInSebastopol

Godfree Daniel's it works even better now! Three excellent tips!

By Tuesday I may have the 21" I ordered. Been with Windows since DOS 5 and am tired of configuring everything to do the mundane, then got this IPad , fell into a MBPro, got SHMBO a MB Air and am so impressed with the elegance and simplicity, I figured it was time to launch!

This forum is so helpful, well put together, quick response time and nice folks, when it comes time to port over from Windows 8.1 to this it may take a bit but you all make it enjoyable.

Thanks for the good word and thankfully Vespars will be running tonight so I can tear away from this.

How to edit, customize, and remove menu bar icons on a mac.

Organize your menu bar by removing icons you don't use and adding those you do.

Quick Links

What is the menu bar, drag menu bar icons to rearrange them, remove menu bar icons (including macos icons like siri), customize the time, date, and name in the menu bar, add useful icons like now playing or shortcuts, control center makes some menu bar icons redundant, remove distractions and stay focused, key takeaways.

  • Rearrange, hide, or remove cluttered menu bar icons on your Mac by holding the Command key and dragging them.
  • Remove macOS icons like Siri and Spotlight by dragging them out of the menu bar or disabling them in System Settings. Remove third-party icons from the relevant apps settings
  • Customize the time, date, name, and Control Center by going to System Settings > Control Center.

Your Mac's menu bar can be home to all kinds of useful shortcuts and quick actions. But if it's overstuffed with icons, you might prefer to rearrange, hide, or remove some of them instead. Here's how to customize the menu bar to your liking.

There's a good chance if you're reading this you already know what the menu bar is, but just in case you don't: the menu bar is the list of icons that appears in the top-right corner of your Mac screen, next to the time.

macOS and third-party apps will place icons here for quick access, which can be genuinely useful. Unfortunately, that utility can be hampered when there's too much on screen at once. On top of this, it looks cluttered and unsightly sometimes, making it harder to quickly find the icons you actually use.

You can rearrange almost any menu bar icon by holding the Command key and then clicking and dragging. There are a few limitations to this. For example, you can't click and drag the time and date, you can't move Control Center, and if you have the Siri menu bar icon enabled you can't move that one either.

There's a quick way to remove some icons from your menu bar, and it's identical to removing icons from your Mac dock : hold Command, click and drag the icon out of the menu bar until you see an "X" appear, then release your mouse button.

Some icons can't be dragged and will need to be disabled from the settings instead. Head to System Settings > Control Center to see a list of all the available options. Change "Show in Menu Bar" to "Don't Show in Menu Bar" to remove those you don't want.

Some redundant icons you might want to remove include the Spotlight search magnifying glass (you can trigger it with Command+Space), Siri (trigger it with "Hey Siri" or hold F5), and VPN icons (especially if you use a proprietary VPN client). You can always add icons back using this menu.

While here, you may want to enable the battery percentage readout alongside the "Battery" module, which makes the icon far more useful.

Disable Third-Party Menu Bar Icons From the App

You can't get rid of third-party app icons using the Command and drag method. The easiest way to get rid of these is to change the setting that enables them within the associated app. Some apps, like ExpressVPN, let you decide whether to show an icon in the dock, in the menu bar, or both.

Sometimes, the icon that appears in the menu bar is a background process. You can get rid of Mac background processes from System Settings > General > Login Items, under the "Allow in the Background" section. At other times, it's an app that started up when your computer booted, which you'll find under the "Open at Login" section of the same menu.

Some apps seem to always show an icon when in use, and there's not a lot you can do about this. Evernote, for example, places a Quick Note shortcut in the menu bar with no option to turn it off. You'll either have to replace Evernote with a better note-taking app or hide it using a third-party application, like Bartender or Hidden Bar.

Hide Menu Bar Icons with Third-Party Apps

Sometimes, the only solution is to temporarily hide icons, so that you don't have to look at them all the time. This is also a good option if you want to keep the icon around, just in case you need it.

Bartender is a $16 app with a four-week trial built around this concept. By default, Bartender places a small ellipsis (…) to the left of your menu bar. Hold Command then click and drag icons to the left of this icon to hide them. Reveal and access your hidden icons by simply clicking on the ellipsis. They'll disappear again when you take your cursor away.

Bartender includes a lot of other features as well, like the ability to display icons on a separate bar, create customizable behaviors for hiding icons, customize the menu bar with colors and borders, and use deployable presets, triggers, hotkeys, and more.

Hidden Bar is a lightweight, free app that performs the same basic task in roughly the same way. It's available as a download from Github . The app uses a trigger arrow and a spacer to divide apps. Move apps to one side of the spacer, then use the arrow to expand or contract the menu bar.

macOS also lets you customize the date and time display in the top-right corner of the screen. Head to System Settings > Control Center > Clock and click "Clock Options…" to open a new settings panel for this.

Here you can choose to display the date and day of the week, switch between analog and digital styles, use a 24-hour clock, flash the time separators, show seconds, and choose whether to announce the time and how often the announcements happen.

To edit the name that appears, head to System Settings > Control Center and find the "Fast User Switching" section. Using the "Show in Menu Bar" drop-down, you can choose to hide your name, show your full name, show your account name, or just show the Fast User Switching icon. If space is tight, hiding your name is a good idea.

Now that you've made some space in the menu bar, it's time to fill it with more useful icons. You'll find some of these under System Settings > Control Center, including a Now Playing icon, which works for apps like Music, Spotify, and even Safari web pages.

Shortcuts lets you build time-saving workflows that can work on both mobile platforms and macOS. One of the most useful ways to use Shortcuts on your Mac is via the menu bar. To display the icon, you'll need to make sure that Shortcuts can be triggered using the menu bar .

Lastly, some third-party apps live in your menu bar to make life easier. These include clipboard managers like the free and open-source Maccy , bandwidth manager TripMode , free sleep-preventative Amphetamine , and system status monitor iStat Menus .

You've probably realized by now, but the most useful icons are in Control Center, which cannot be moved or removed. This is good, because you no longer need to display Wi-Fi or battery information in the menu bar, since it lives in the Control Center instead.

Head to System Settings > Control Center to customize what's shown. Most items can't be removed, but there are some options under the "Other Modules" you can tweak.

Many controls are nested within their respective sections in Control Center. For example, you'll find Dark Mode and Night Shift toggles under "Display" and controls for sound output as well as AirPods transparency mode or noise cancelation options under Sound.

A well-organized menu bar shows information like the time and your battery levels at a glance, while providing fast access to apps you use a lot like a VPN or your clipboard history. Removing distractions from the menu bar can help you better focus on the task at hand.

Want to be even more focused on your Mac? Give the macOS background sounds feature a shot , try out the Pomodoro Technique , and block distracting websites altogether.
