There’s a reason celebrities and well-known stylists, like Paul Stafford, Junior Green and Georgia Bell, choose to use Denman brushes. The 80-year old company has proven time and time again that their hairbrushes are quality made and designed to produce luxurious locks. If you’re in the market for a new hairbrush, you’ll want to give one of the Denman brushes a try.

When it comes to day-to-day styling, you’ll want to go with one of Denman’s classic brushes, such as the Denman 7 Row D3 Classic Styling Brush or the Denman 9 Row D41 Women’s Styling Hair Brush. These classic brushes are great for any hair type and can be used on wet or dry hair. The nylon bristles are sculpted with round ends and placed in rows. The only difference between the seven-row model and the nine-row is that the nine-row is larger.

Each of the Denman brushes come with an anti-static rubber pad, which stops friction from causing annoying frizz and flyaways. The handles are also made using an ergonomic design that keeps wrists from tiring. The handles are easy to grip, which means you’ll have more control as you work through your hair.

Individuals who have trouble with knots and tangles will want to go with one of Denman’s brushes that space their bristles out a bit more widely. The Denman Tangle Tamer Ultra Detangler Brush is one such brush. Larger gaps between the bristles not only makes it easier for the bristles to glide through hair, but it also reduces the chances of hair damage during the brushing process.

Should you have a more sensitive scalp, you’ll want to stick with a brush made using all-natural boar bristles. The Denman D81L Nylon Quill Boar Bristle Hair Brush uses flexible bristles and an air-cushioned pad that are gentle on scalps. The natural bristles also do a great job of reducing frizz and adding shine, in addition to detangling hair.

While all of the Denman brushes can be used to style hair, models with air vents are best when styling with a hairdryer. With this type of brush, air is able to flow freely through the brush and circulate around the roots of your hair.

Our Expert Score

User summarized score, what other experts liked, what other experts didn't like, what to look for.

  • Hairbrushes can become quite dirty, especially if you use any mouse, gel or hairspray in your hair. You’ll need to set aside time to give them a good cleaning. Start off by removing any hair that has been collected in the bottom of the brush. A comb or pointed pencil can help you get the hair up and away from the bristles. Next, fill your bathroom sink with warm water and a drop of shampoo. Set the hairbrush in the water and wait five minutes for it to soak. Afterward, you can use a toothbrush to clean the bristles. Rinse the hairbrush off under the faucet and set it upside down on a clean cloth. Wait for the brush to air dry before you begin using it again.
  • Never store your brushes near a heat source or in the path of direct sunlight.
  • You can actually purchase a mini Denman brush that’s attached to a keyring. That way, you always have a brush on hand for afternoon or evening touch-ups.
  • All of the Denman brushes are lightweight and travel friendly.
  • When selecting a Denman brush, you may wish to take price into consideration. The Denman 7 Row D3 Classic Styling Brush and the Denman 9 Row D41 Women’s Styling Hair Brush are both classic brushes that have a more affordable price tag. Since the Denman Tangle Tamer Ultra Detangler Brush and the Denman D81L Nylon Quill Boar Bristle Hair Brush are specialty brushes, you can expect to pay a little more for them.

Since Denham was founded back in 1938, they have become a leader in the hairbrush industry. It all started when John Denman Dean left his home in Northern Ireland for a trip to New York and discovered nylon. When he returned home, he used the nylon to create a new hairbrush that quickly became a popular choice among stylists.

The Rainey family purchased Denham in 1972 but kept the same dedication to the quality of the products as the original owner. The company continues to create new and innovative brushes, which they then make available to stylists, as well as the public.

Why the Denman Brush Will Change Your Curly Hair Routine

Plus, how to use it.

Trust us, we get it. We were that way too—until we started seeing seemingly endless Amazon reviews, TikTok clips, and YouTube videos in which women (all with perfectly defined ringlets and traffic-stopping spirals) raved about how good the Denman brush is for curly hair.

So, what's so special about the Denman brush? "The strong nylon bristles provide the kind of tension needed for shaping curls, while the rounded cushion cuts back on static and frizz," says Fae Norris , a hairstylist at Rock Paper Salon in Los Angeles. "Because of that, it's easy to form a perfect curl with the right technique." (Don't worry, we've got more on that below.) Not to mention that the cult-favorite tool comes in a few different versions with different numbers of rows—the original, called the D3, has seven rows, while the D4 (ideal for tighter curls) features nine rows and the D14 has five, widely spaced rows—which means there's a brush for every type of curl .

Ready for a brush with greatness? We asked a variety of stylists and experts for everything you need to know about the Denman brush, and how to use it.

First things first, what is a Denman brush?

Sooner or later, everything old is new again—and that includes the Denman brush. Despite its recent popularity among curly-haired TikTokers (the #denmanbrush tag , where users share tips, tricks, and tutorials, has 23.6 million accumulated views and counting), the top-notch tool is actually over 80 years old.

Denman D3 Original Styling Brush

D3 Original Styling Brush

In the 1930s, inspired by his sister's struggle with unruly hair, John Denman Dean— an entrepreneur from Northern Ireland—decided to take matters into his own hands and created what's now known as the Denman D3 Original Styler. "What set his design apart from other brushes was that it featured pins made from nylon material," says Frances Courtney, Denman's head of marketing. "Since the pins wouldn't melt under high heat, it could be used with a hair dryer." Not to mention the unique teardrop-shaped handle (to make styling easier and more comfortable) and the half-round pad (to help shape and smooth hair).

Two decades later, the brush first became famous, when legendary hairstylist Vidal Sassoon used it to create his trademark angular bobs, like the signature style worn by miniskirt pioneer Mary Quant. "For years, the Denman D3 has been hailed as the best brush for styling sleek bobs," says Courtney. "This will never be disputed, but little did people know that with one simple twist of the wrist, that same brush could revolutionize curls."

Why is a Denman brush good for curly hair?

Despite its roots, the Denman brush has earned top honors from curly girls everywhere, who say it enhances the shape and bounce of ringlets and coils, detangles any knots, and fights frizz. (In fact, it's racked up more than 33,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, including ones like this: "Ladies, don't walk, run to place this order," a very enthusiastic reviewer wrote. "I ran this brush through my hair and OMG...it was magic!!!")

That's because the brush's shape, weight, and strong nylon pins create exactly the right amount of tension needed for defining spirals, says Courtney, who compares it to curling ribbons with a pair of scissors. Just as running a piece of ribbon between your thumb and a sharp scissor blade results in a spirited curl, the brush grips the hair enough to pull it taut, so spirals spring to life when you reach the ends.

Which Denman brush is best for your curls—the D3, D4, or D14?

While the D3 Original Styler is the most well-known Denman brush, there are a few other versions with different number of rows—which means there's an option for every curl type and texture. To choose the Denman brush that's best for your curls, here's something to keep in mind: Generally, more rows of pins (like the D4 Original Styler, which has nine rows) produces tighter curls, while fewer rows of pins (like the D14 Mini Styler, which has five rows) coincides with looser curls, according to Norris. "If the brush snags on the hair or doesn't glide easily, the pins are set too closely for your hair type," she says. "Switching to one with fewer rows will not only be best for your curls, but also the health of your hair."

D14 Mini Styling Brush

Denman D14 Mini Styling Brush

D4 Classic Styling Brush

Denman D4 Classic Styling Brush

If that feels too complicated, you may want to consider this: "You can easily remove or replace rows of pins at home, so if you purchase a brush with more rows, like the D3 or D4, you can customize and change it depending on the style you're trying to create," says Norris.

Here's how to use a Denman brush for curly hair.

Ready to try TikTok's most popular tool? Before you break out your Denman brush, it's essential that you start with wet strands. “You do not want use it on dry curls as that can cause frizz, damage, and/or breakage,” says Janet Jackson (who, yes, shares a name with the record-breaking music icon), founder and CEO of Toronto’s Jou Jou Hair Studio .“So you should either wash your hair first, or, if you want to just refresh your curls, saturate your strands with a water-based leave-in spray.”

After getting out of the shower, prep damp hair with the proper styling products for your texture. If you have thick hair, first apply a leave-in conditioner, then run a wide-tooth comb through your hair to gently detangle and follow with a heavier curl cream (which you can even mix with a hair oil); for thin or fine hair, skip the leave-in conditioner, and apply a curl-enhancing mousse or light cream, says Norris.

While there are many different tricks and techniques for how to use the brush, this is the one Norris recommends for beginners: Turn the brush so the pins face up, then working in sections (“If you have thicker hair, smaller sections will add definition and volume,” says Jackson. “For thinner hair, use larger sections.”) and starting at the root, slide the brush down the length of the your hair, tucking the brush under as you approach the ends. Once you remove the brush, give the hair a good scrunch, before moving onto the next section. “After the whole head is whipped into ringlets and properly scrunched, you can go in and break up curls and twist smaller sections as needed,” says Norris.

Alternatively, for those with hair types 2A through 3B, Jackson recommends this: “Work in sections and twirl your hair around the brush,” she says. “If the section forms a perfect ringlet, great! If not, you need to twirl your brush in the other direction.”

Regardless of the technique you choose, finish by diffusing your hair and twisting the ends with a light oil or pomade (if you have types 2A to 3B), or drying your hair naturally or with a hooded dryer, then twisting the ends with a heavier oil or butter (if you have types 3C through 4), says Jackson. "A few spritzes of shine spray is great for everyone," adds Norris.

I Finally Tried This Brush for Curly Hair and My Curls Are Perfect Spirals

The lack of effort I put into my hair has always been an odd point of pride for me. When I began seeing curly hair "routines" on TikTok, I scoffed at the teens discovering the magic of diffusers, scrunching wet curls with a T-shirt, and the occasional finger coil — all techniques I've been using for years.

Then, along came the  Denman brush .

Brushes, in general, are a tool that I considered blasphemous, a rebuke of all that is curly. Back in my day (circa 2010), we curly-haired people rolled our eyes at those who would tell us with straight faces and even straighter hair, "Why don't you just brush it?" when we complained about unruly frizz or tangles.

Meet the expert

  • Frances Courtney is the head of marketing for Denman .

"Oh, you mean like this?" we would sarcastically reply, showing off brushed, fuzzy lions' manes that so defied gravity we might call ourselves Elphaba. A  brush  was not part of my curly hair vocabulary . I haven't owned a  brush  since the '90s. So, who the hell did these Gen Z tweens think they were, showing off their routines that involved a thick-handled brush with rows of white teeth?

However, when I kept seeing video after video of girls — their curl patterns ranging from wavy 2b to coily 4a — using the brush with enviably spiraled, frizz-free results, I conceded that maybe I wasn't the all-knowing curl guru I thought I was. Maybe I had yet to learn.

Below, we get into a brief history of the product as well as a tutorial on how to use the Denman brush.

A Brief History of the Denman Brush

"Believe it or not, it's actually an 80-year-old brand,"  Frances Courtney , head of marketing for  Denman , told  InStyle , correctly assuming I would not believe this wasn't some new-fangled invention discovered by the teens. "And the brush hasn't changed that much from the original design."

According to Courtney, the first brush was created in the 1930s by an entrepreneur from Northern Ireland named John Denman Dean, who was inspired by his sister's unruly hair.

"He came up with this idea to use nylon [pins] in her hairbrush," she said.

Because nylon doesn't melt under heat, it was the perfect tool for hot styling.

Courtney noted that since the 1950s, the brush has been used primarily by professionals — and not always for the sole purpose of creating the perfect curl.

"[The Denman brush] was made famous by the Mary Quant bob," she added, referring to the short, asymmetrical style with ends turned inward that was popular in the '60s.

These days, though, it's become a curl-routine staple. There are hundreds of results for Denman brush styling tutorials on YouTube, though I don't have the patience for a 20-minute video that can be summed up in a 60-second TikTok.

Courtney added that, perhaps due to TikTok and other social media, a younger audience has been finding the brush more recently. As they did with the Mary Quant bob, some are using the brush as a tool to help straighten their hair with the help of a hair dryer.

How It Works

The best description I've found of how the brush works for curly hair is the ribbon-on-scissors metaphor. Running a piece of ribbon between your thumb and a scissor blade results in an exciting little ribbon curl. Similarly, the brush pulls the hair taught, allowing the section of hair to snap back into itself.

"It's all about tension," explained Courtney.

The original Denman of the mid-20th century relied on a rubber base to create that resistance against the hair. The modern brushes have replaced the rubber with TPE materials, a common dupe with thermoplastic and elastomeric properties, so the brush is safe for those with rubber allergies.

The brush is also compatible with different curl types and will create a different effect based on the number of rows of teeth. The "original" Denman, called the D3, features seven rows of pins, though you can remove rows for a looser curl. For tighter curls, you may find the D4, which has nine rows, more effective.

How to Use the Denman Brush

After seeing the endless scroll of perfect spirals on Curl TikTok, I finally bit the bullet and purchased the D3 styler. I lined up my tried and true products and readied my diffuser.

Whaddya know, it worked. Like, really, really well.

My curls, while a bit flat at the roots (from what I can tell, a common issue that can be remedied with a new diffusing method), fell in perfect spirals with nary a frizz halo in sight. I've since tried a few different techniques with the brush, including spiraling it like a finger coil and brushing both smaller and larger sections at one time.

For my 2c/3a hair specifically, I've found that running the hair through the brush from my roots and then tucking the brush under as I approach my ends works best with my natural pattern and the slightly chaotic, Grace Slick look that I prefer.

This step adds roughly 10 minutes to my wash-day hair routine, which was only about 10 minutes to begin with. Overall, though, using the brush is a net gain in time. The curls last for days (or more if you happen to use a  sleep mask ). They only need a light refresh rather than a full wash day after day.

Before discovering the Denman brush on TikTok, I was a sour curmudgeon set in her ways. Now, I'm proud to say I'm a sour curmudgeon who knows how to brush her hair.

When is the best time to visit Moscow

Discover when is the best time to visit Moscow. In this blog post, I will talk about weather, budget and other things to know to choose the best time when to go to Moscow for you. I cannot account the times when we went in Moscow. Here are the pros and the cons of each month taking all main criteria into account!

I will first describe the main criteria that will help you choose when to go to Moscow:

  • Climate in Moscow: temperatures and weather

Special events in Moscow

  • Budget and visa

Then I will talk about each season (go directly to this party if you already have an idea of the desired departure date):

  • Advantages and disadvantages month by month

The weather cannot be the only criterion to decide when is the best time to visit Moscow for you. Even if the temperatures drop low, Moscow in December is just magical! This is why I advise to take into account several criteria at the same time. Also remember that it takes at least a month to get the Russian visa.

When to go to Moscow: climate and weather

The seasons are well marked. The mid-season months are not necessarily the best for the weather. However, they are not necessarily to be avoided, because, as we will see later, Moscow is a city that changes all the time and the prices can be more attractive. For example, for a lot of people winter is the best time to visit Moscow.

Weather in Moscow. Moscow is inland, making the city “more protected” from changing weather. For example, the weather is much more changeable in St. Petersburg. On the other hand, the weather in Moscow is more and more scorching in summer, we can then easily reach 30 degrees (for the Russians, it’s already the heat wave).

Moscow temperatures

As soon as you think of Russia, you want to do “Brrrr”. Let’s prepare our down jackets! Indeed, the Russian climate is not the mildest on the planet. However, it all depends on the region, because the country is very large. Moscow is almost at the same latitude as Copenhagen. As Moscow is relatively far from the coast, there is a pronounced continental climate. It is hot in summer and cold in winter.

In addition, global warming is there. For several decades, annual average temperatures have always been recorded above the past. I suggest you look at the averages over the past five years to be as close as possible to reality:

Sunshine and precipitation

Sunshine. This is surprising, but there is more sunshine in Moscow than in Paris or even in Berlin: 1,731 hours in Moscow, compared to 1661 in Paris and 1626 in Berlin.

Duration of the day in winter. We had questions about the length of the day in winter. So, here are a few things. As in Europe, the shortest days are in December. In Moscow, at the end of December, the sun rises around 9 a.m. and sets around 4 p.m. Then the day gets bigger until the end of June, when the day is the longest.

Precipitation. There is more precipitation in Moscow than in Paris (705mm against 637mm).

When is the best time to visit Moscow: interesting events

Moscow is a city that moves a lot. It is even said that this city never sleeps. So there are a lot of events, forums, exhibitions, conferences. Here I’m going to talk about the main recurring events that punctuate the year and that may help you decide when to go to Moscow.

End of year celebrations in Moscow

December 31 rather than Christmas. The Russians are eagerly awaiting the holiday season. Here on December 31 is like Christmas with us. Religion, “opium of the people” according to Marx, and, above all, its official absence marked the country during the Soviet years. This then reinforced the celebration of December 31, while Orthodox Christmas is January 7.

Russian calendar. In addition, it should be known that the first week of January is a bank holiday. Many Russians therefore do not work during this period. Europe also greatly influences the habits of Muscovites. Consequently, the Christmas markets start in early December and, for some, continue until early February!

Fairytale atmosphere. If you are wondering when to go to Moscow and you love the holiday mood, then the end of December – early January, and even February, is for you! There are many things to do during this time: for example, Christmas markets, decorations, winter games, skating rinks. In 2016, Moscow opened the largest ice rink in Europe. In short, the city is doing a lot of entertainment during this period and the general atmosphere is at the top! However, everything comes at a cost. You can see more detail below in the article, month by month.

When to go to Moscow

Visit Moscow in May

May 1 and 9 are two big festivals in Russia. Both dates are known worldwide. May 9 in Russia is May 8 with us in France. The signature that marks the end of the Second World War. The shift day is explained by … the difference in time zone.

The May 9 holiday is a very important holiday for the Russians. The Soviet human losses amounted to millions. So there are many families who have been directly affected by the war. The first big parade was organized by Stalin on June 24, 1945 in Red Square in Moscow. Later each year the USSR and then Russia organized a parade on May 9. Here is the video of the first parade dating from 1945 in color, then the last – that of 2016.

A disadvantage of the beginning of May. For the planned events, Red Square will not be completely empty. There are always installations for May 9, but also rehearsals. So, to the question “when is the best time to visit Moscow”, I would not say that May is the best one. You can find out more in the article “Moscow in autumn” below.

Throughout the year, the Moscow City Hall organizes free events (festivals, small markets, concerts, etc.) in the Red Square and in the streets of the city center. For example, there are two major interesting events:

  • Festival of Lights “Around the World”: in 2019, it was from September 28 to October 4.
  • Anniversary of the city of Moscow always celebrated the first weekend of September.

When is the best time to visit Moscow: budget, price seasonality, visa

Most touristy periods. Many travelers come to Moscow from May to October. This is the period when we see the most tourists in Moscow. In addition, many are also those who come at the end of December and at the beginning of January for the New Year. The beginning of May and the first week of January are also strongly requested, in particular by the Russians (school holidays, public holidays).

Accommodation. Hotel rates therefore necessarily increase during these periods of the year. But they do not go so far as to triple. To give an idea, count at least 80 euros in the city center for a double room with breakfast. You can read more about the districts of Moscow in my article: Where to stay in Moscow?

Guides and tours. Also take into account that during these periods it will be more difficult to find a guide at the last moment. It’s best to do it 2-3 months in advance. There will be more waiting or difficulty obtaining tickets during the months of high tourist influx: late December, early January, May, June, July, August.

Visa for Russia. The cost of the visa does not change depending on the month of the year. On the other hand, the deadlines can be longer if you make the request for the high tourist season (from May to October). Allow about a month. Getting the Russian visa is not complicated, there is a procedure to follow.

In Russia, the seasons are divided as follows:

  • Fall: September, October, November.
  • Winter: December, January, February.
  • Spring: March, April, May.
  • Summer: June, July, August.

Discover Moscow in autumn: when is the best time to visit Moscow in autumn?

From the beginning of September, we feel that the temperatures begin to drop gradually, especially at night.

Moscow in September

More and more travelers are choosing the month of September to go to Moscow. Because it is not cold yet and there are fewer tourists than in summer. Prices drop slightly, but remain higher than in the lean months of the year. There is also the city’s birthday on the first weekend in September, but also the “Around the World” festival towards the end of the month.

Moscow in October

You are likely to come across the colors of autumn from the beginning of October. The accommodation prices are starting to drop gradually. There is less waiting in the places to visit. Temperatures are not very low: during the day they are generally around +6 degrees. On the other hand, the only negative point can be the cost of plane tickets, if you leave during the French school holidays.

Moscow in November

It’s one of the least calm! Temperatures drop and can approach zero during the day in mid-November. Hotel rates are low, there are few tourists, and therefore less waiting in museums. It’s easier to get tickets for the Kremlin Palace of Armor, which can be very difficult in the summer. Guides also have more availability. So why not go to Moscow in November?

Discover Moscow in winter: when is the best time to visit Moscow in winter?

Winter is a very nice time to go to Moscow, because the Christmas and New Year decorations are installed from the beginning of December and are not removed until the end of February. To learn more about the different activities in winter, read this article: What to do in Moscow in winter? If winter temperatures scare you, check out Moscow in the spring (see below).

Moscow in december

Normally, negative daytime temperatures set in, although the weather can vary significantly from year to year. In general, from mid-December the snow is durable. It is from December 20 that more and more travelers come to Moscow. December 31st is celebrated like Christmas in France. Accommodation rates are higher from mid-December. It’s also more complicated to find a guide at the last moment. Furthermore, as in Europe, the days of December are the shortest of the year. But if you want to mark New Years Day, you will have lots of memories!

Moscow in january

January is also a very festive month. The first week of January is a public holiday in Russia. Besides, it’s also a week of Russian school holidays. There are more people in the streets, museums and everywhere in the city. To find out more about this time of year (Christmas markets, itineraries, etc.), read: Christmas and New Years in Moscow . Prices remain high during this week, but drop from mid-January.

Moscow in February

It’s the second quietest month of the year. In February, winter clearly takes its ease. The temperatures are the lowest, it’s a real winter! The days are longer in February than in December. So we’re enjoying the day more, and with the snow it’s really nice, because the weather in Moscow in February is pretty sunny. Accommodation rates are at their lowest, and the decorations are still there. So, if you are looking for when to go to Moscow, if the cold does not scare you and you appreciate the snowy landscapes, why not consider the month of February?

Discover Moscow in spring: when is the best time to visit Moscow in spring?

Spring is a contrasting period between March, which is still quite cold, and May, when we really feel the arrival of summer.

Moscow in March

The ice and snow begin to melt around mid-March. Winter is coming in March, but spring is not quite there yet. It’s the third quietest month of the year. It is therefore possible to visit the city more quietly. Accommodation prices are low, guides are available. The weather in Moscow in March is milder than in February. In addition, the days are longer, so you can take many walks.

Moscow in April

It is only from mid-April that we begin to feel the beginnings of sunny days. The weather in Moscow in spring and April in particular is getting milder and colder: we can expect +7 during the day. In addition, there are not many travelers yet and we fear to enjoy the places more quietly, but we feel that the start of the tourist season is approaching. Accommodation rates are lower than in May.

Moscow in May

The early May holidays attract many travelers to Moscow. There are also many Russians who come to the capital on public holidays. It is therefore advisable to plan visits in advance to avoid queuing once there. Red Square can be closed or partially closed for rehearsals for the May 9 parade, the same day and one or two days after. More info in: Moscow in May: events, budget, what to do?

Discover Moscow in summer: when is the best time to visit Moscow in summer?

All summer months are great, if you take temperatures into account. The weather in Moscow in summer is quite pleasant. However, in recent years, there have been great heat peaks or heat waves in July (30 degrees during the day).

Moscow in June

From June, you can take long walks in the city’s parks, very numerous and much appreciated by the locals. Boat trips are more enjoyable from June. On the other hand, the prices of accommodation in Moscow are higher than in the lean months. There are also more tourists. Book your hotel, tours and activities in advance.

Moscow in july

July is the hottest month, but we’re not on +40. Moscow is a city inland and therefore there is little fresh air, if it is very hot. We can do lots of walks to discover the city. We have written several complete itineraries so as not to miss anything of Moscow in our special Moscow travel guide. It also contains tips to save time and enjoy the city off the beaten track, as there are so many tourists during this time of year.

Moscow in August

Temperatures are starting to drop gradually, but there are still so many people. In order to be sure of the choice of accommodation, I advise you to book in advance. The same goes for guided tours or entrance tickets to the Kremlin. It’s also a good time to discover the city differently by going to places that are less touristy and more frequented by locals.

When is the best time to go to Moscow? In summary!

The best time to discover Moscow depends on the criteria you want to favor: the weather, the budget, the tranquility of the visits, the special events to be experienced on site.

In summary:

  • The peak tourist season in Moscow begins in early May and ends in late September.
  • Late December and early January is the best time to experience the holiday mood, but it comes at a cost.
  • End of January, February, March, beginning of April, November are the quietest months of the year, when you can visit the city more calmly and on a reduced budget.

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

2. It's an Architectural Dream

Moscow's architecture is unmatched, and the design and colors of every building are breathtaking. Visit the Kremlin, built in the 15th century, or Saint Basil's Cathedral from the 16th century.

3. Art Galleries and Museums Aplenty

4. The World-Renowned Subway Stations

Not many cities can claim their train stations as a drawcard, but the Moscow subway, built in 1935, is truly like walking through a royal castle. You can only imagine the engineering that went into building something so complex and impressive.

5. The Russian Theater

Probably the biggest draw to Moscow is the Russian Theater, which hosts everything from plays to ballet. The Bolshoi Ballet Company is among the most well-known symbols of Russia and experiencing this in person is incredible.

What to do in Moscow

1. moscow kremlin: russia's must-see.

The first stop in Moscow is the Red Square - home to the iconic St. Basil's Cathedral with its multicolored domes, and the gateway to the Kremlin. Just past Lenin's Mausoleum, this fortified citadel was built for royalty. Overlooking the river, it boasts a density of cathedrals and palaces behind thick walls. Step into the State History Museum and the Museum of Fashion for contrasting but equally enthralling Russian learning opportunities, or enjoy a stroll through the Aleksandrovsky Garden.

2. Bolshoi Theatre: The Show Must Go On

The Bolshoi Theater is a historical gem. This grand institution has hosted the famous Russian opera and ballet for centuries, and the performances have never lost their grandeur. The most talented opera singers and ballet dancers keep coming from Russian schools. Naturally, it is the ultimate venue to immerse yourself when it comes to traditional performance. The little sister to the Bolshoi, Maly Theater, is just across the street.

3. Cathedral of Christ the Saviour: A Worthwhile Reconstruction

This Orthodox Christian church was one of the tallest in the world until it was demolished by Stalin in 1931, as he planned to have the "Palace of the Soviets" built. Of course, this idea never came to fruition, and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was certainly significant enough to rebuild. Since 1997 it has become a huge attraction for its beauty as well as a symbol of the country's tumultuous history. The golden domes shimmer from across the city, and the interior is fabulously colorful.

4. Gorky Park: Where Everyone Comes out to Play

This "Central Park of Culture and Leisure" lives up to its self-proclaimed title, boasting newly renovated recreation zones for visitors of all ages. For the ultimate experience, hop on the Sokolnicheskaya Metro Line and get off at Park Kultury to walk over the Crimean Bridge - the first thing you will see is the Main Gate of Gorky Park. From amusement rides to ice skating rinks, activities abound. Not to mention the simple delight of strolling by the river or lounging on the grass.

5. State Tretyakov Gallery: One Thousand Years of Art

The largest collection of Fine Russian Art in the world is found in Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery. National glory is celebrated across the halls of this museum, giving artists a platform when their work is often overlooked in foreign collections. Particularly telling are the modern art galleries, which exhibit political art created largely in response to the fascinating and tumultuous history of Russia over the 20th century.

17 Exciting Things to do in Moscow

Written By: Linda Voltaire

Updated On: December 21, 2022

Visiting Russia? These are the top 17 things to do in Moscow to help you plan your trip.

If the western world has New York City , the first great metropolis on the eastern side of our planet is Moscow. A huge city with a complicated and impressive history, Moscow gets a bad rep over Russian politics – but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Capital to the largest country in the world, Moscow takes the grandeur of its standing very seriously.

This is a place where luxury is king and where opulence takes a front seat in every aspect of life. The buildings are grand and imposing, the parks are luscious and enormous, and even the subway stations look different in Moscow than anywhere else in the world.

Table of Contents

Best Things to do in Moscow, Russia

Walking around Moscow is also going through the tumultuous history of the 20th century, which had Russia as one of its main protagonists. There are fascinating remains of these times everywhere in the former Soviet capital, from the gorgeous Seven Sisters skyscrapers to the Orthodox cathedrals that were closed for the better part of a century.  Still, Moscow is also a completely modern city, with a vibrant social and party scene, incredible restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

After living in Russia’s capital as an ex-pat for four years, I got the privilege to experience not only the main attractions in Moscow but also the everyday life in this huge city and quickly found my sweat spots off the beaten tracks! So here is my list of my top 17 things to do in this exciting metropolis!

Attractions in Moscow

When visiting a famous city like this one, it’s a must to go through the most iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists.

1. The Red Square, Kremlin & Surrounding Area

No place tells the story of Moscow’s power in the past century the way the Red Square does. This is where the biggest political meetings in the USSR occurred for many decades, and you can feel the power on each step.

Here, you’ll also find the historic museum at the entrance, showcasing the decades of history behind this iconic landmark. The Lenin Mausoleum, perhaps the most famous resting place in the world and home to the remains of the former communist leader, is also here.

On one side of the Red Square you’ll find the Kremlin, the fortified complex that now hosts the presidential residence. This is also home to the most iconic of all Moscovite landmarks: St. Basil’s Cathedral, a 16th-century marvel of colors. This is the best spot to take a selfie and show the world you’ve reached the Russian capital!

  • Get your Kremlin Skip the Line Tickets and Kremlin tour here.
  • Free cancellation up to 24-hours in advance of the tour.

2. Bolshoi Theatre

You can easily spend a couple of days just exploring the Moscovite city centre, and the Bolshoi Theatre should be your second stop. Walk past the Red Square and then head to the nearby Bolshoi Theatre, one of the oldest and most renowned houses of opera and ballet on Earth.

Visit for the impressive early 19th-century architecture, but if you’re seeing a ballet performance, make sure you book between 3 and 6 months in advance! I can strongly recommend this as it is a truly unique experience!

  • Book a private 2-hour tour of the legendary Bolshoi Theatre.
  • See the presidential box reserved for tzars, watch a rehearsal and skip the lines through a separate entrance.
  • Free Cancellation up to 24-hours in advance.

3. Luxury Shopping at GUM and TSUM

While many might think of Moscow as the sad place with the long bread queues from the USSR days, it’s been quite the capitalist haven for a while.

If you’re up for some shopping, you’ll find one of the biggest luxury malls in town, TSUM, right behind the Bolshoi and GUM, at the red square. GUM is the most famous department store in town, where you’ll find luxury everywhere and all high-end brand.

All in an imposing late 19th-century building with lots of history, worth a visit just for the design, its bridges and the glass roof even though you are not up for shopping!

4. Christ the Savior Cathedral

A newer addition to the gorgeous Moscovite cathedrals and my grandeur neighbor during my years in the city Don’t let the young age of this building fool you. After the perestroika in the early 90s, the newly revived Russian Orthodox Church received permission to build a cathedral on this site. They did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church.

The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes as tall as the skies in bright gold and gorgeous paintings and decor! Bring a shawl to cover your hair to adjust to the local tradition.

Head to the back of the cathedral and you will find one of the most photographed bridges in Moscow, the Patriarshiy Most. This is the perfect spot to get a good view and photo of the cathedral but also to see the Kreml and Gorky Park from a distance. Or why not just enjoy a moment watching the river and its boats!

  • Get around Moscow with ease using the Hop On Hop Off boat and Bus ticket. 24, 48 or 72-hour tickets available.

5. Gorky Park

Cross the river and head to Gorky Park along the Moscow river. The most famous green area in town, similar to New York ’s Central Park and the weekend hangout for locals. There are many beautiful parks in the city, but if you’re only visiting for a few days, this is the unmissable one!

With fair attractions to entertain children, beautiful artificial lakes and gardens, and lots of outdoor activities, it’s a lovely place to relax. A place of rest in the middle of the metropolis. The area in front of the New Tretyakov Gallery & the Muzeon Park of Arts is actually one of my favorite oasis as a bit more quiet and peaceful than Gorky itself.

Why not spend some time in the museum to get a great tour of Russia’s history through art or just enjoy the art exhibition outside where local artists spend their weekends.

6. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow is from the Moscow River. There are many stops for the boats and one is just next to Gorky Park. See the city from another perspective – and turn the ride into a romantic one by taking the evening cruise. Moscow is magic during the night.

If you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience, take the Radisson Blu cruise – or the Erwin for a delicious seafood dinner. Both stop at Gorky or at the luxury Radisson Royal Hotel, set in one of the Seven Sister’s skyscrapers.

  • We use Get Your Guide when booking city tours and they offer a River Sightseeing Cruise seeing all the main tourist attractions in Moscow

7. Metro Hopping

First inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow subway system is one of the oldest in the world, and certainly the most beautiful. Started under Stalinist times, each metro station is dedicated to grandeur and oozing personality.

Visiting the subway stops is an attraction in and of itself, and Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Kropotkinskaya are my favorites. Those surrounding the Red Square are also mesmerizing – in general, these are kind of like underground palaces.

Most of the signs at the Moscow Metro now have Latin letters, so it’s very easy to get around!Unfortunately, the trains are not as beautiful and pleasant as the stations but still, this is a true Moscow experience.  Take a guided tour of the 9 most beautiful Metro Stations including the award-winning art deco station. See more details here.

8. Arbatskaya & Artsy Moscow

Novy Arbat Street is one of the most touristy areas in the city, with lots of shops and cafés directed at visitors. When you walk a little beyond, you’ll find a different part of town, where the hip scene thrives because so many artists live in the area. Just follow the small streets with fewer tourists!

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings hosts the main building of the Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious colleges in Russia – and the one with the best view.

Although this is a little outside the city centre, the sight from above is more than worth it, with the nearby fountains and park and then the whole of the city behind them.

10. Russian Market

If you love to visit markets wherever you go, Moscow has one of the most impressive ones in the world – the Izmailovsky. You can easily take the metro here and feel like you’ve been transported to another time.

This place was first built in the 16th century and retains the look of an old fairytale, with a lineup of colorful old castle. A lovely local experience beyond the confines of the bustling metropolis, where you can also try some delicious Russian barbecue.

Here, you’ll find beautiful souvenirs at great prices.

Off The Beaten Track Moscow

Once you’ve covered the most touristic spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer – and the places below will also be full of locals! Moscow is a city for hipsters, full of trendy and arty spots where you can literally feel the creativity oozing! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend my sweat spots below!

11. Patriarshiye Prudy

This is my favorite area in the entire city! While Moscow is generally a very noisy metropolis, Patriarch Ponds is far quieter, yet such a vibrant place. This is a very hip and trendy area making you think you are rather in Paris than in Moscow. Here the streets are narrow and full of chic eateries and clubs to see the local crowd.

A little bohemian and with an air of peace you won’t find anywhere in the city this is a great spot to spend an afternoon with your thoughts.

12. ArtPlay

Barely 15 minutes away from the city center you’ll find the artsiest Moscow district: ArtPlay. For decades, this block was a factory, but it was renovated to become a hub for the arts not too long ago.

Now, you’ll find it’s full of exhibitions, showrooms and art schools – and some of the most creative people in town. Writers, painters, and young hip people use ArtPlay as a rendezvous, and you can feel the creative energy here. The industrial design with modern interior decoration is also a feast for the eyes!

13. Shopping Local Designs

If you’re into design, both international and local, you’ll find lots of cute things at Patriarshiye Prudy. Department store Podium Market is also a great spot for shopping, as a department store everywhere in town, with lots of local and international brands. There’s one in the Four Seasons Hotel next to Red Square. My favorite Moscow mall is Tsvetnoy Central Market, a cool spot with great brands, lots of inspo, and even a cute café!

14. Moscow City

Like many other great capitals of the world, for the past few decades, Moscow has hosted a super modern area full of modern skyscrapers – Moscow City. With a completely different vibe than the rest of town, it’s like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressively tall glass buildings. Here, you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, such as Ruski and Sixty they are perfect spots for dining or enjoying a glass of wine with a view. There are also a relatively new shopping mall with lots of international brands called Affimall!

Wine, Dine, and Party in Moscow

Gone are the gloomy Moscow days – cold as it might be in the winter, Russia’s capital is a place for the senses. Great food and drinks abound – and the clubs are hot, too!

15. Where to Eat in Moscow

Moscow is a great metropolis where people love to dine out, and there are endless options for delicious food. The flavors are as diverse as you’d expect from a big city, with options of fine dining and little hipster eateries.

  • For traditional Russian flavors, I can’t recommend Café Pushkin, Dr. Zhivago, and Turnadot enough.
  • When looking for international cuisines, Italian is always the way to go, and my local favorite is Probka.
  • Fine dining is best done among the clouds at White Rabbit, with European flavors.
  • As for the hip spots, you can spend a full day just eating around trendy places, from burgers to Asian fusion.

More Dining Options

  • Patriarshiye Prudy offers a lot of small and classy spots with cool concepts, like breakfast restaurants I Love Cake and Fresh.
  • For dinner, I love the NYC experience of Saxon & Parole, and the wonderful trendy Pins, with its delicious food and drinks.
  • For delicious Asian food head to CutFish.
  • Lastly, there’s a recent revival of food markets in Moscow, offering lots of great choices of international flavors at affordable places.
  • Don’t miss out the Vietnamese food stand at the Danilovsky market, and everything at Usachevsky!

16. Rooftopping

Big cities deserve to be seen from above, having a cocktail among the clouds. These are my recommendations for rooftop bars in Moscow.

  • As I mentioned in the Moscow City section, Sixty & Ruski are two of my favorites, overlooking the newest part of town.
  • White Rabbit and its fine dining is also a lovely place for a fun dinner looking down on Moscow.
  • O2, in the city center, has an advantage above all others: amazing views of the Red Square.
  • Buono, above the Radisson Royal Hotel, might be the most romantic rooftop hotel in town, with its candlelit setting.
  • Also on the Radisson stands the Mercedes. It’s a luxurious and posh experience with delicious cocktails.
  • The Sky Lounge offers a peculiar experience, mixing an old Soviet building with futuristic additions.

17. Moscow by Night

Party the night away! The city is full of bars everywhere, but there are some areas where you’ll find more than others.

  • Patriarshiye Prudy has lots of hip and small clubs and great bars, including the super fun private club Clava, which has a great vibe and people from all walks of life.
  • For more hipster style bars, Red October is the place to go.
  • Streak is a summer favorite, with a lovely terrace to catch a beautiful sunset – plus, their mozzarella bar is delicious.
  • At night, Red October lights up with clubs everywhere, including the cool rooftop one Gipsy.
  • Jagger is also a great spot during summer with a more relaxed vibe in garden setting.
  • For the traditional Russian luxury experience, go to SohoRooms, a whole other world including all-night go-go dancers.

There are so many things to do in Moscow at night and during the day, you definitely need several days to explore this exciting destination.

Moscow is a must-see city, a city like no other ! I hope you will enjoy this Russian metropolis as much as I did!

These places look so awesome! Moscow is truly a beautiful city

Very good article, you have explained so nicely. Russia has always been a part of history and its good to know about much more about architecture and other things, wish i could see the inside of façade

Thanks for sharing such a nice article. You have very beautifully explained everything that one need for a trip to Moscow.

Nice article. Love the hidden gems and graffiti art, would love to visit Artplay. Thanks for a comprehensive guide to Moscow!

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here we can find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers.

Your article is good and meaningful .

Thanks for sharing about ArtPlay district, we didn’t know about it and it looks amazing 🙂 Hopefully there’ll be a second time in Moscow, we visited last May and really liked the city!

Wonderful stuff! I’ve been to Moscow, but not properly – it’s a long story lol!

Anyhoo, my next thing is to fly from Berlin to Moscow and then travel from there to Beijing via the Trans-Mongolian / Trans-Siberian train. Now, if only I could just find the time …!

I hear Moscow is very beautiful at night. I hope to get out there one day. A friend of mine went to St. Petersburg and had a great experience. Despite all the tension we see on the news with Russia and other Countries like the U.S. I wonder what the sentiment is with Russians and foreigners visiting their country for tourism. Especially Americans.

that looks like quite a beautiful place. 🙂
