Discover The Beauty Of Desaru Coast: All You Need To Know About The Luxury Escape

A blend of natural beauty and modern tourist attractions set against the backdrop of a 17 km-long pristine beachfront, Desaru Coast is perfect for a memorable getaway. Located in Johor, Malaysia, this new tourism development houses properties by some of the most renowned hotel and resort chains in the world.

In an effort to revive the quaint seaside town of Desaru, luxury developments on a prime stretch of the beach conceived Desaru Coast in recent years. The efforts were evident when it became the only destination in Malaysia to make it to the list of World’s Greatest Places by Time magazine in 2021. Dotted with grand villas and fine dining options, Malaysia’s prime coast-side destination also houses an elite golf club and an adventure water park.

How to plan a Desaru Coast trip

Begin planning your trip to Desaru Coast by deciding the duration of your stay. Owing to its proximity to Johor Bahru, it is perfect for a short trip to other parts of Malaysia and Singapore.

Desaru Coast hosts several unique events throughout the year that you can track on their official website and plan your trip accordingly.

Desaru weather and best time to visit

Desaru has moderate to high temperatures throughout the year, which ranges from 27° to 30° Celsius. June is the hottest month. The coastal area also receives moderate rainfall during December.

The best time to visit Desaru Coast is between April and October. One can enjoy sunny and dry weather during this period, and the sea is perfect for water activities. Don’t forget to pack your favourite sunglasses and sunscreen for a fun time at the beach.

How to reach Desaru

If you are travelling by car, then Desaru is only an hour and 15 minutes away from Johor Bahru. It takes about four hours from Kuala Lumpur via the Senai-Desaru Expressway and South Expressway, respectively, to reach Desaru.

The Senai International Airport is just an hour’s drive away from Desaru Coast.

You can also take the ferry from Changi Ferry Terminal to Tanjung Belungkor Ferry Terminal, which takes about 30 minutes. It takes another 30 minutes of shuttle ride from there to reach Desaru Coast.

Things to do in Desaru Coast

Enjoy the spectacular view as you take a walk on Desaru Coast’s pristine beach overlooking the South China Sea. Explore unique marine life along the shoreline and learn about the benefits of the coastal environment on your tour. Soak in the sun as you discover new things in the midst of nature.

A ninety-minute guided tour is complimentary for all in-house guests of hotels and resorts on the Desaru Coast. It is available on all days except Mondays and can accommodate a group of a maximum of 10 people per tour.

Mangrove cruising

Be one with nature as an expert guides you on an eco-tour cruising the mangroves of Desaru Coast. Get to know about the way of life of the fishermen community, plant saplings with them and taste local delicacies. It is truly the experience of a lifetime. You can also spot herons, otters, crabs and monkeys in Desaru’s rich mangrove forest.

Tour duration: Half day

Price: Starts at RM 200 (USD 42) per person

Learn to play tennis

Head to One & Only Desaru Coast for a one-on-one tennis session with their resident Peter Burwash International (PBI)-a certified tennis coach. Learn tennis, perfect your posture, stroke and other aspects of the game while on your vacation.

Hop on an all-terrain vehicle and make your way to the quiet life nestled amidst nature. Tour Desaru’s one-of-a-kind farm filled with tempting fruits like durian, mango, pineapple and papaya. Visit the agricultural gallery and vegetable and herb garden to learn about the region’s natural agrarian production. Finally, head to the petting zoo to spend some time with the furry ones.

Rejuvenate your body, mind and soul with a much-deserved spa session. Experts at One & Only’s Chenot Spa provide excellent science-based procedures that will leave you feeling rejuvenated. You can start with a bioenergetic checkup to determine your energy level and accordingly choose a programme that caters to your wellness.

Some of their body massages and treatments include detox body massage, connective tissue massage, phyto mud treatment, cellulite treatment and facial drainage treatment.

Visit the waterpark

Looking for a dose of adrenaline on your vacation? The Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast is the perfect pick. The waterpark has one of the biggest wave pools in the world along with twenty wet and dry rides and other slides. It is one of the best places for friends and family to make memories together.

Ticket price: Starts at RM 150 (USD 32) per person

Get ready for the perfect golfing paradise. The 45-hole ground is set on Malaysia’s tropical landscape, which comprises stunning valleys and the sparkling beachside. The ELS Club consists of two courses — The Ocean Course & Clubhouse and The Valley Course & Clubhouse — that will help you hone your golfing skills while witnessing breathtaking views.

The Ocean Course, designed by four-time major champion Ernie Els, looks over the magnificent South China Sea. Meanwhile, the Valley Course, designed by three-time major champion Vijay Singh, offers a more dramatic and challenging layout for players.

Where and what to eat on Desaru Coast?

With fresh produce sourced from the farms present nearby, Desaru Coast is home to several fine-dining options that offer a culinary experience like no other.

Topping the list is the 261 Bar & Restaurant. Whether you want to unwind after a game of golf or enjoy delectable dishes over a majestic view, this is your place to be. Anantara’s Turmeric is another great spot to grab a bite of Thai-inspired dishes cooked over live stations overlooking the pool.

Let the aromas from Prego’s kitchen transport you to Italy, thanks to their beautifully crafted Italian fare by the top chefs. Some other options to put an end to your cravings are One & Only’s Essential and Ambara, Anantara’s The Lounge and Lagoon Pool Bar.

When in Desaru Coast, having fresh seafood is a gastronomic experience that you must not miss. Located only a few minutes away, Nelayan Seafood By The Coast is renowned for churning out some of the best seafood dishes served with an unobstructed view of the coast. Some of the dishes recommended by the chef are salted egg yolk crab, deep-fried squid, king pawns and soon hock fish.

If you don’t mind driving and exploring the coastal region, the Yard & Co is the perfect place to enjoy a hearty meal with views of the blue ocean. A thirty-minute drive away from Desaru, this place is known for its breakfast options like creamy egg benedicts with a bagel dish called Snooze Button or their big breakfast plate called Yard Breakfast.

Girl Eat World

A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, desaru travel guide: a quick weekend getaway from singapore.

Desaru Coast is a coastal resort town just a few hours outside of Singapore. It consists of a long stretch of beach, four resorts, and an adventure waterpark. Perfect for a short weekend getaway from Singapore!

travelling around desaru

I visited Desaru in 2010 before Desaru Coast was built. Back then, there wasn’t much to do in Desaru and the hotels were rather dated, so I never thought about going back there for another visit.

When I saw the news that a new resort town called Desaru Coast had opened in 2019, it piqued my interest. I wanted to check it out again, but because of COVID and the border lockdown that happened shortly after, I didn’t actually get to visit until recently.

I am so glad I gave Desaru another chance! Read on to find out how my trip went.

  • Packing List for Desaru Coast
  • Direct Ferry to Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal
  • Private car direct from Singapore
  • Combination of public transport and taxis

Packing and Travel Check List for Desaru Coast

  • Passport – With its proximity to Singapore, it’s easy to forget that it’s still an international trip.
  • Malaysia visa (if necessary) – Yes, you’ll be crossing the border so you’ll need your passport and an entry visa depending on the passport you hold! You can check Malaysia visa requirements here .
  • MYR (Malaysian Ringgit) – You might not need it if your plan is to just stay at the resort, but if you want to buy snacks or other things from outside the resort, you will need cash in local currency.
  • Snacks – There are no convenience stores at Desaru Coast, so if you want food without the premium price from getting it at the resort, you’ll need to bring them yourself.
  • Swimsuit – The main things to do at Desaru coast involves water activities, so bringing a swimsuit is a must! I’d even bring multiple if you plan to be there for more than a day.
  • Beach or water toys for kids

How to get to Desaru Coast from Singapore

One of the reasons why Desaru is such an easy getaway from Singapore is that there are multiple convenient ways to get to Desaru Coast from Singapore. I’ll go through each one in detail:

  • By Private Car
  • By Public transport and taxi

1. Direct Ferry to Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal by Batamfast

  • A straightforward way to get to Desaru
  • The Desaru Coast ferry terminal is really close to the resort area
  • There is a shuttle bus that goes to 3 of the resorts
  • Cheaper than private car hire if you are going solo or as a pair
  • You don’t need to gamble on the traffic congestion in the SG <> Malaysia land border
  • This ferry might get re-routed due to the monsoon season
  • Expensive, and children pay the same fare as adults even for babies who don’t require seat

Starting from 2022, there is now a direct ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal (TMFT) to Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal (DCFT) offered by BatamFast ! This makes going to Desaru from Singapore extremely convenient – you just need to get yourself to TMFT, take a 1.5-hour ferry ride to Desaru terminal, go through immigration, and then it’s a short 10-15 minute car ride to your resort. The ferry ride costs $118 round trip per person, including children and babies. There is no special fare for babies and children.

If you’re planning to visit the Desaru Waterpark while you’re there, you can consider getting the waterpark + ferry package from Klook , because it will save you some money!

Desaru Coast Terminal Ferry

However, during the North East Monsoon season (usually from November to around February), this ferry route might be diverted to Tanjung Pengelih due to the water conditions. This means a 1-hour ferry ride to Tanjung Pengelih, then 45 minutes bus to Desaru Ferry Terminal, and then a 10-15 minute ride to your resort.

I initially booked the ferry as I thought it was the best way to go to Desaru, but I was informed that my ferry will be rerouted due to the NE Monsoon. Since we were traveling with a baby and a toddler, and we aren’t keen on changing transport mode so many times, we decided to cancel the ferry and booked a private car instead. I still think it was an acceptable way to get to Desaru though. If, for example, you’re traveling during the holiday season and you are actively trying to avoid crossing the border by land.

2. Private car direct from Singapore

  • Easy, get picked up directly by car and straight to Desaru
  • The most flexible time-wise – you get to choose when to make the journey
  • Cost-effective if traveling in a group of 4 or more
  • Border-crossing is super easy, you don’t have to leave the car
  • Need to cross the SG <> Malaysia border by land, which can be potentially congested so it is not recommended for the holiday season
  • Expensive if only 2-3 people are traveling

Another way to get to Desaru is by private car. This means you’ll get picked up from your house straight to immigration in Woodlands or Tuas checkpoint, and then to your resort at Desaru. It should take about 3 hours, but it might be more if the SG <> Malaysia border is congested.

Going by car is convenient to get to Desaru. For the most part, you get to just sit in the car and enjoy the ride. You don’t even need to get off the car when you clear immigration. And with a private car, you do get some flexibility in when you want to leave.

The only downside is that the time it takes to get to Desaru is variable due to the unpredictable traffic in the SG <> Malaysia border. I would avoid crossing the border by land if you’re traveling during a long weekend or any holiday season .

Desaru Coast Travel Guide

The round trip price for a private car to Desaru is $300 for a 4-seater car and $380 for a larger car that can fit up to 6.

This is the method I ended up choosing after finding out our ferry to Desaru has been rerouted. I paid $380 for a large Toyota Vellfire car as a group of 6. I booked ours from SGJBTaxi via WhatsApp, and we’re pleased with the service! Despite booking very last minute (literally the day before the trip), our driver was very professional and showed up early. He also showed up early when we had to be picked up on Sunday.

As per SGJBTaxi’s advice, we left Singapore at 8 am on Friday and then drove back at 1 pm on Sunday, and we did not have any issues clearing immigration both times. There was no queue on Friday morning, and coming back on Sunday took us only 40 minutes to clear both sides of immigration.

Desaru Coast Travel Guide

If you are not a Singapore resident, be sure you have the right visa to enter Singapore, fill out the Arrival Card , and be prepared to show your onward journey to exit Singapore. Singapore residents (which includes EP, work pass, and LTVP holder) do not need to fill out the arrival card when entering via land.

3. Combination of public transport from Singapore and Grab Car in Malaysia

  • The cheapest way to get to Desaru for a party of 2-3
  • Somewhat time-flexible, only limited to bus availability to the checkpoints
  • The most time-consuming way out of the 3

If time is not of the essence and you’re feeling adventurous, you could try this method and save some money.

How to get to Johor Bahru from Singapore by Bus: Read this post for a run down of all the options and tips and tricks!

You could take a bus to Woodlands checkpoint, and catch a taxi to Desaru once you’re on the Malaysia side in Johor Bahru. A one-way trip to Desaru from Johor Bahru should cost $80, so you could potentially save $140 if compared to hiring a private car.

Our visit to Desaru was lovely, but given the size of the resort area, I think 3 days and 2 nights is ideal . You could even stay just 1 night if you’re just there for the resort and not planning to do other activities. Besides the adventure waterpark, there is not much to do in Desaru outside of your resort.

While in Desaru, you’d be spending most of your time within the resort, so you will want to choose the one that you’ll enjoy the most!

Desaru Coast is brand new and only started to operate in 2019. In Desaru Coast, there are four 5-star resorts:

1. Anantara Desaru Coast Resort

Anantara Desaru Coast Resort was opened in December 2019. Given they started operating just before COVID, the facilities are still very much new and not dated at all. They have a swimming pool directly next to the beach and direct beach access. Having visited the other resorts (except One&Only) I personally think Anantara is the best option out of the 3.

➡️ Check this out: We stayed in Anantara Desaru Coast Resort during our time and we loved it! I’ve written in detail about our stay at Anantara Desaru in a separate post , so be sure to check it out if you’re interested!

Desaru Coast Travel Guide

2. Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast

Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast is located next door to Anantara, Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast first opened its door at end of September 2019, just before COVID. It is very family-friendly as it is the closest hotel to the water park. You can see the park from the lobby, and Hard Rock Hotel guests receive complimentary access to the waterpark.

However, Hard Rock hotel doesn’t have direct beach access. You will have to cross the road to The Westin and go past the resort to go to the beach.

3. The Westin Desaru Coast

The Westin Desaru Coast is also located in the same complex as Anantara and Hard Rock is The Westin, this resort was opened in April 2019.

The Westin has direct beach access and a beach bar, but there is no swimming pool near the beach. it is located closest to the public area of Desaru beach, so you’ll likely see more people on the beach than compared to Anantara.

Desaru Coast Travel Guide - The Westin

4. One&Only Desaru Coast

One&Only Desaru Coast is the newest resort in Desaru Coast, opened during COVID on September 2020. If you want an extra luxurious secluded getaway, this is a great option!

They are located further away from the rest of the resorts, with their own private beach that isn’t accessible from the other resorts. They only have suites and villas, so be prepared to shell out more compared to the other options.

How to get around Desaru Coast

Unfortunately, Desaru Coast is not an area where ride-sharing apps flourish. I couldn’t get a Grab when I was there! But there are still ways to get around:

1. By Shuttle Bus

If your goal is to just check out the resort town, don’t worry! There are 3 shuttle buses that go around Desaru Coast and stop at every interest point and every resort (except One&Only). It makes visiting other resorts very easy!

Desaru Coast Travel Guide - Shuttle Bus

When I went in February 2023, these are the schedule :

Desaru Coast Travel Guide - Shuttle Bus

This gives you an idea of the route and timing. I have to warn you that we did have to wait for the shuttle one night when we wanted to go to another resort. They were 20 minutes late. The schedule might be updated periodically, so be sure to double-check when you’re there.

2. By walking on the beach

If your goal is to get from resort to resort (except One&Only), you might be able to just walk on the beach.

On one of the days of our stay, we wanted to visit the Hard Rock hotel to see what it looks like. We took the shuttle bus to go there, but going back we decided to walk by crossing over to The Westin and then walking along the beach back to Anantara. The walk was only 10-15 minutes! This ended up being a much faster way since we didn’t have to wait for the shuttle.

1. Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast

The waterpark is perhaps the main feature of Desaru Coast. The waterpark features a large wave pool and exciting slides, great for adults and kids alike!

You can buy tickets via Klook here . If you are getting to Desaru by ferry, I recommend checking Klook’s ferry + waterpark package to save money!

Desaru Coast Travel Guide - Hard Rock

2. Desaru Fruit Farm

At this farm, there are more than 100 species of fruits. you can visit a petting zoo, have a fruit buffet and visit an herb garden.

3. Desaru Beach

The Desaru Coast area features a long 17km stretch of beach. You can play on the beach and discover sea creatures living there. There is a tour specifically for Desaru Beach discovery if this is what you’re interested in.

travelling around desaru

4. Golf at The Els Club

Another popular reason why Singaporeans would travel to Malaysia is to get in a round of golf games. Well, you can do so in Desaru at The Els Club!

There are two courses – Ocean and Valley course, and they are both reachable via the shuttle bus. The Ocean course was designed by the golf legend Ernie Els himself, while the Valley course was designed in collaboration with Vijay Singh, a name that should not be unfamiliar if you’re a golf enthusiast. With the Ocean course looking over the South China Sea, it would be a beautiful course reminiscent of the historic Pebble Beach.

Book tee times at The Els Club website

If you are driving to Desaru, there are a few places you might want to stop by to stock up on snacks or other necessities. Here are the closest places:

  • SKS City Mall – A small and very local mall about 6km from Desaru Coast. You could get some basic amenities at Watsons (drug store) and snacks. There is also a wet market where you can get fruits.
  • Pasaraya Jaison – If you want to get food and snacks before making your way to the resort, this is your best bet.

Cost Breakdown of a weekend at Desaru Coast

Here is the cost breakdown of our trip for those interested!

As usual, this breakdown is only meant to serve as a guide . It might not apply to you depending on the method of transportation, how much you consume, how many people are in the group, and any activities you do while in Desaru.

In total, we spent a little over SG $1,100 for the weekend . This is a very similar amount to what we spent at The Residence Bintan , which was also a great getaway option from Singapore.

That’s all I know about Desaru Coast! Please feel free to leave comments below if you have any questions, or anything to add!

  • November 29, 2023

Hi Melissa,

Without self-driving, how do you get to desaru fruit farm or other attractions ? Thank you 🙂

  • November 30, 2023

When I was there, I couldn’t get Grab but maybe they are available now. If not, the hotel should be able to give you a car for a fee.

  • April 3, 2023

Hi when u say the fruit farm is reachable via shuttle bus, are u refering to the shuttle bus from desaru ferry terminal? I got a bit confused as i dont see the fruit farm on the 3 shuttle bus schedule u posted.

Hey Willie, just double checked on this and it seems that I was mistaken. It is not reachable by the public bus

Desaru Coast 101: What to see, do and eat at this idyllic getaway destination

We spill the beans on what to do and the best places to eat in Desaru Coast

Dawson Tan

It's fast becoming one of our favourite destinations: Desaru Coast, a picturesque seaside town along the southeast coast of Johor. While it's an easy hour's drive from Johor Bahru , it's also just a convenient 90-minute ferry ride from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. Even better that it's filled with an array of adrenaline-pumping things to do and tasty grub to try.

Thrill seeker or laid-back traveller, they've got everything from an Adventure Waterpark to slow-paced fishing villages – there's even an ostrich farm that's home to more than 200 of these massive birds. And like  many nearby beach getaways , the food here is of utmost priority. Once greeted by sandy shores, it's exactly where you should enjoy a feast, from the seasonal sashimi at an omakase restaurant to the grilled seafood at a luxed up beach club.  Here's a guide to everything you should do and eat when in Desaru Coast. Best places to stay

One & Only Desaru Coast

One & Only Desaru Coast

Step into beachside resort One & Only and you’ll immediately be blown away. One of the most stunning sights? Its infinity pool that's flanked by lush foliage – the hotel pays lots of careful attention behind the scenes to preserve the flora and fauna. The views don't stop there though. Look further and you’ll be greeted with a glimpse of the picturesque South China Sea.

It's a spacious resort too: 42 Junior Suites, two expansive two-bedroom Grand Suites and a four-bedroom residence, Villa One. Each suite even comes with its own private plunge pool. If you ask us, its the Ocean Junior Suite that's most appealing since there's a verendah that fully opens up to sweeping sea views.

While you can book a range of activities, including paddleboarding, massage, jet-skiing, and kite surfing, it's tempting to simply lounge at Ember Beach Club to even out your tan.

The Westin Desaru Coast Resort

The Westin Desaru Coast Resort

With beachfront views, The Westin makes for the perfect getaway destination for all – romantic couple's trip or girls' weekend getaway. When it comes with spacious rooms and private balconies, this resort is bound to make for a memorable stay. Kudos to the Westin Heavenly Beds too, as they're meant to have extra plush pillowtop mattresses to ease you into deep sleep.  They do have quite a lineup of wellness activities, from a relaxing session of sunrise yoga or scenic sunset run. If you prefer unwinding through other means, there's also a beach bar that serves up unique cocktail concoctions. Sounds like a leisurely way to end your day, while basking in the convivial spirit of a campfire.

Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas

Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas

Over at Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas, it's the beachfront infinty pool that's an obvious draw. Even private villas and residences come with their own private pool, so make sure to pack your most stylish swimsuit.  But besides lounging by the pool, you can also enjoy family-friendly activities at this seaside resort. Bicycles are available for free for guests to cycle around the resort. They also occasionally have movie nights, else, the sun terrace and varied massage services prove to be a treat too. Otherwise, simply enjoy whittling away your time in their luxurious rooms. We won't fault you – each comes with a large private balcony with seaside views.

Best things to do

Have a game of golf at Els Golf Club Desaru Coast

Have a game of golf at Els Golf Club Desaru Coast

All golf ethusiasts, here's one for you. Set aside some time in your itinerary for a golfing session at Els Golf Club – each course is inspired by famous greens in the UK.  The Ocean Course features a trio of 9-hole courses, while the Valley Course is an 18-hole course designed by Vijay Singh that's jointly developed with Ernie Els Design.

If you're entirely new to golfing, there is also a beginner friendly one-day course that runs you through the basics. After a few rounds of swinging your club against the backdrop of lush rainforest, rest  and relax at the Big Easy Bar Grill over some good ol' American nosh.

Hop on a river cruise through a mangrove forest

Hop on a river cruise through a mangrove forest

The Junglewalla's Westland River Cruise is ideal for a nature getaway.  The tour starts at Sedili, a fishing village located just a 40 minutes drive from Desaru Coast.  Not only is this boat cruise an educational trip around the wetlands, but also one where you can spot a bevy of wildlife, from birds to water creatures.

Herons, crabs, even monkeys – these are regular sights in Desaru's rich mangrove forest. I f you’re lucky, you may even spot a family of otters playing in the river.  There'll also be a guide who will point out the different types of mangrove tree species, while also offering up fun facts on the wildlife ecosystem and impact of ocean tides.

Splash through more than 20 thrilling water rides

Splash through more than 20 thrilling water rides

For some splashing good time, you’ll want to visit the Adventure Waterpark. This family-friendly place is set against the picture-perfect backdrop of a quaint fishing village, and features over 20 wet and dry rides, slides and attractions. Besides having one of the largest wave pools in the world or a classic swinging replica of a pirate ship,  there's something for everyone.

If you're looking for an adrenaline rush, make sure to head over to one of the more thrilling rides: The Tempest. That "heart in your mouth" rush is a sure-fire feeling at this funnel-shaped water ride – besides regular twists and turns, there is also a shocking 24-foot drop.

Laze by the sandy shores of Desaru Beach

Laze by the sandy shores of Desaru Beach

The long stretch of Desaru Coast Beach overlooking the South China Sea is the highlight of the coastal town. Lay down a mat and packed lunches and laze your day away on the sandy beach. If you'd like to have a swim, the warm waters here are generally calm and shallow, great for casual dips and for kids to splash around in. Water sports are also available here - there are plenty of local operators around so you can compare prices before committing. Sunsets here are pretty scenic too, so don’t forget to snap one while you’re here.

For the adventurous, consider a night stroll along the shore where you're sure to encounter burrowing crabs and hermit crabs on the prowl. Remember to bring a torch or simply toggle on your phone flash to be able to spot them  under the moonlight.

Best restaurants to eat at

World-class nigiri sushi at Hoshi

World-class nigiri sushi at Hoshi

Within the tranquil grounds of One&Only emerges a star of a Japanese omakase restaurant that melds traditional Japanese sensibilities with contemporary techniques. In the warm and cosy space, sink your teeth into world-class nigiri sushi crafted using premium ingredients that align with the philosophy of "syun" – an artful showcase of simplicity that leverages peak seasonality.

Expect a fine line-up of chutoro, Kagoshima Wagyu, oscietra caviar, seasonal seafood, and more with a touch of theatrics on the side.  P remium  Japanese sake and whiskies are also available for pairings.

AFTER  Right around the corner is Dusky Monkey, an enchanting al-fresco lobby bar surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature. Here you can sit back and enjoy a nightcap made from either r egional rums or curated gins.

Grilled seafood at Ember Beach Club

Grilled seafood at Ember Beach Club

Hungry? The smoky aroma coming straight from the wood-fired ovens of Ember Beach Club will have you salivating. This is famed chef Andrew Walsh's latest seaside luxury dining concept, so don't hesitate to grab any on of the sea-facing tables and brace yourself for a quality meal ahead. Get those tastebuds going with starters such as the grilled tiger prawns with harissa and the perky Thai grilled beef salad tossed with tamarind and papaya.

Hearty mains include smoke-kissed lamb chops, crispy fish and chips and our top pick, the wood-fire confit free-range chicken that came beautifully dressed with a richly spiced Percik style sauce. Definitely order a side of the steamed coconut basmati rice so that none of that sauce goes to waste. But if you're skipping carbs, the charred baby gem lettuce, laced with heaps of nori and furikake, makes for a good substitute.

AFTER  Come sundown, don't leave just yet. The oasis transforms into a live music venue under the stars where fine libations await your lips.

Gourmet buffet dishes at Turmeric

Gourmet buffet dishes at Turmeric

While it  seems just like your typical international hotel buffet spread at first glance, zoom in on the explosive  union of  local Malaysian and Thai flavours that is nothing short of a feast fit for royalty. Whether you're chilling at the terrace overlooking the pool or escaping the heat in its air-conditioned quarters, this all-day dining restaurant also brings you gourmet dishes prepared a la minute at the live stations. Highlights include the sumptuous beef rendang tok, vibrant green papaya som tam, addictive nasi lemak danish, spicy tangy Johor laksa, and more.

AFTER  Feel the breeze caressing your hair at the elevated  360-degree  Observatory Bar paired with fine vintages and cigars. Otherwise, head down to the beach to enjoy a couple of refreshing cocktails and vibe out to the laidback house beats from a live DJ at the coastal seaside restaurant bar of Sea.Fire.Salt.

Desaru Travel Guide: Attractions and Places to Visit

Discover the best of Desaru in Johor , Malaysia with our comprehensive travel guide, featuring a handpicked selection of attractions and must-visit places. Located in the southeastern region of Malaysia, Desaru offers an excellent blend of beaches, tropical natural landscapes and a rich cultural heritage. Just a short drive away, travellers can find Sungai Rengit, a rustic fishing town renowned for its fresh seafood, especially lobsters. In this post, we highlight the top attractions and places that we explored during our recent trip. Plan your perfect Desaru getaway with our recommendations and insider tips.

Travel to Desaru

We did a straightforward road trip from Singapore to Desaru via the Senai-Desaru Highway. This relatively new highway offers a convenient route that takes you through a mix of scenic countryside, aquaculture plots and palm oil plantations. The trip took around one hour from Johor Bahru , depending on traffic conditions. A highlight of the road trip was the Jambatan Sungai Johor, also known as the Johor River Bridge. This is an impressive bridge that spans across the Johor River which stretches over a length of approximately 1.7 kilometers. For travellers from the Malaysia capital ( Kuala Lumpur ), there is the option of getting a private van transfer from Kuala Lumpur to Desaru via Klook .

Accommodation

We stayed at Four Points by Sheraton Desaru which was located in the heart of Desaru in Bandar Penawar. The hotel is relatively new and very clean – it is a good base for travellers looking to fully explore the region rather than staying in a beach resort. We booked a Premium Room (which was huge – 517 ft) for about USD 100 inclusive of breakfast. Overnight parking was available for RM 5 per night. The hotel is surrounded by shops and eateries within walkable distances. For travellers looking for more luxurious and beachfront resorts, the following hotels might be better options:

  • Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas
  • The Westin Desaru Coast Resort
  • Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast

1. sg rengit.

Sungai Rengit is a small fishing village located in the southeastern region of Malaysia. Situated about 27 km south from our hotel in Bandar Penawar, Desaru, it offers a glimpse into the local maritime culture and traditional way of life. The village is known for its fresh seafood, which can be found at the local markets and restaurants. While it may not offer extensive attractions or amenities, Sungai Rengit provides a simple and authentic experience for those interested in exploring a traditional fishing village and savoring local seafood. Be sure to visit the large lobster statue located in the town square. We also visited the instagrammable and popular café, Yard & Co , which is located on the southernmost point of Sungai Rengit – it offers panoramic views of the Johor coastline.

2. Desaru Mini Zoo

Desaru Mini Zoo is a small-scale zoo located in Desaru, right next to the oil refinery at Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex. SKS City Mall is a shopping center located next to our hotel in Desaru. It features a variety of stores, including fashion outlets, electronics shops, grocery stores and specialty stores. SKS City Mall provides a convenient and affordable shopping experience for residents and tourists in the Desaru area. While it may not be as large or extensive as major city malls in Johor Bahru, SKS City Mall serves as a local hub for shopping and dining needs in the Desaru region.

5. Seafood Restaurants

Sungai Rengit offers several seafood restaurants to cater to visitors. These restaurants specialize in serving a variety of fresh seafood dishes, sourced directly from the local fishing industry. The restaurants typically offer an array of seafood options including fish, prawns, crabs, shellfish and especially lobsters. The restaurants in Sungai Rengit vary in size and ambiance, ranging from casual open-air eateries to more formal indoor settings. We had seafood at an off-the-beaten-path seafood restaurant (Super Lobster Village – a few km from Sg Rengit town) which featured unique village decor (see map below).

Trip and Things To Do In Desaru: Waterpark, Beach and Best Hotel In Desaru

When you’re planning a trip to Malaysia, we might suggest you stop by in Johor–and by Johor we mean specifically Desaru. You’ll find Desaru sitting along the east coast of Johor. There are so many interesting things to do in Desaru. Visiting the waterparks, doing nature based activities, and staying in one of the luxurious beachfront resorts.

travelling around desaru

The easiest and simplest way to get yourself to Desaru Coast is by car. You can rent a car in Johor Bahru and drive up for a 71 kilometres trip, it’ll only take an approximate 55 minutes drive. Or if you don’t want to drive your way to Desaru, you can always choose public transportations such as by bus or a taxi. Approximately it will cost you around S$60 to s$80, depending on the day of travel and timing.

Here we’re going to guide you to the best things to do in Desaru. Prepare to extend your planned trip and enjoy your time there. Here we go!

Things to Do in Desaru #1: Choose The Staycation Place

Desaru Coast might be the most suitable destination for those who already craved the ambience of the beach. Pamper your getaway to one of the best in town’s 5 stars resort, where you can accompany yourself with the beach, 24/7. Waking up to the breeze of the ocean and reaching the maximum level of relaxation by the coast. We’re confident enough that this could be one of the best things to do in Desaru.

Yes, the first thing to do in Desaru is to fit yourself into the best resort. Spending time in Desaru might take up a big portion of your energy. You don’t want to waste your time there feeling sore and tired. Charge your body and mind for every minute of your rest so you can keep up for the rest of the things to do in Desaru.

Here is a mini list of our suggestion about the best resort to stay in Desaru:

1. Anantara Desaru Coast Resort and Villas

To decide the things to do in Desaru that suit your interest might be easy, but to choose a hotel or a villa might not be, as there are high possibilities that you will love all of them. The first recommended resort in Desaru is Anantara Desaru Coast Resort and Villa . Here, you will experience the ultimate luxury of Desaru.

Desaru, Kota Tinggi

Price Starts From S$ 489.92

Location: Persiaran Pantai, Desaru Coast, Bandar Penawar, Desaru Beachfront, Desaru, Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia, 81930

This seaside resort is divided into rooms, beach villas, and beach residences. 4 types of rooms are available, and our favorite is the Deluxe Sea View Corner Room because of the larger and clearer view. The villa options would be suitable for people that love intimate places, as they have a private plunge pool. It is also great for small families.

On the other hand, beach residences are great for larger families or groups of friends. Other than the private infinity pool, you will also love the direct access to the beach!

2. One&Only Desaru Coast

Desaru is indeed a heaven for luxurious hotels and resorts. The next recommendation is One&Only Desaru Coast , the place that will make you enjoy the most of the tropical beach weather.

One&Only Desaru Coast - Things to do in Desaru

One&Only Desaru Coast

Kota Tinggi, Johor

S$ 1,020.32

Price Starts From S$ 1,020.32

You can pick the accommodation according to the view you prefer. You can pick the Rainforest Suites if you love to see the lush greenery from your own private pool. Or, if you are a sea lover, pick the Ocean Suites that overlooks the South China Sea. Even better, some of the Ocean Suites are only steps away from the beach sand.

(Also Read: Terengganu Beach )

This sanctuary will bring peace to you, supported by all wellness facilities they have, such as the massage or the beauty treatment from the Chenot Spa.

3. Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast

The last one would be the Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast . Well, it has no resort ambience but it doesn’t mean that it can’t embrace the beauty of Desaru. The hotel is “music-infused”, which means that music is one of the things you can enjoy here. They even have the underwater sound system!

Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast - Things to do in Desaru

Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast

Price Starts From S$ 229.90

Location: Jalan Pantai 3, Desaru Coast, Bandar Penawar , Desaru, Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia, 81930

You can choose the rooms and suites with a nice view and suit it with your needs. If you stay with kids, this hotel is a great choice as they have plenty of rooms that can accommodate up to 4 people. The Studio Suite has a bunk bed, which will be fun for the kids. The Studio Suite Gold, Duplex even has an in-room plunge pool, a kids-friendly facility that you will absolutely enjoy.

Choose one of the resorts above, or you can simply search for your own choice in Traveloka. Don’t forget to check for hotel promotion in Singapore that you can use for an accommodation outside of the country.

Things to Do in Desaru #2: Spend Your Day in The Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast

A family trip would be more fun if you spend at least half a day at a waterpark. Worry not, in Desaru Coast you can always have your fun and thrill at Adventure Waterpark–our next thing to do in Desaru.

Things to Do in Desaru #4: Experience An Exciting Seafood Feast at The Fishing Village

If you’re already craving about what to eat in Desaru. Here’s some guide for your belly; go to The Desaru Fishing Village. Walk it off and explore the nearby fishing villages along the coast. The most popular of all fishing villages here is the Tanjung Balau Fishing Village, where you can enjoy your moment by flying kites on the beach, walk along the rocky shore at low tide, catch and capture the sunset, or if you’re eager enough to learn the history, you can visit the fishermen museum and the local art gallery.

Due to its coastal town nature and close distance to the fishing villages, Desaru is a great destination for those who love seafoods. Desaru One Day Trip + 2D1N (Reviewed By SGMYTAXI Team)

  • Desaru One Day Trip +…

Desaru One Day Trip

Due to the high demand for Desaru trip, especially during the Singapore and Malaysia school holidays, families are more keen for a day trip to JB or 2D1N JB trip vacation to enjoy in Johor.

Many of us may think that the hottest Johor attraction would be Legoland Malaysia and JB downtown Area.

BUT, according to my survey, DESARU would be the next hottest place of interest in Johor.   Y ou may ask “WHY”.

Because a lot of parents would consider bringing their children to have an  “ECO” trip or “Rural” trip . This is the reason why there are so many ECO farms begin established recently.

Now, let me list down some PLACE OF INTEREST of Desaru.

  • Desaru Fruit Farm
  • Desaru Beach (not recommended for a day trip)
  • Desaru Waterpark
  • Teluk Sengat Crocodile farm
  • Desaru Ostrich Farm
  • Sungai Rengit (2 Seafood Restaurants)
  • Extra –> Kota Tinggi Firefly Park
  • Extra –> JDT Horse Carriage
  • Extra  –> Desaru Alpaca Farm
  • Extra –> Kota Tinggi Waterfalls  (not recommended for a day trip)

I know most of you may refer to the google map to check which route is the most convenient and shortest path to reach your destination especially when you’re only planning for a DAY TRIP in Johor. You have to plan well before taking a day trip in Desaru.

Desaru Fruit Farm Map

Desaru Fruit Farm Map

If you are only looking for a DESARU DAY TRIP, I personally think that you can visit all the places that I have listed above.

I will go through one by one starting with the most important place of interest and how to get around in Desaru.

Based on the Desaru map above, you can see that the first destination on Desaru would be “ Desaru Fruit Farm “.

If you are coming from Singapore, you will reach around 11:30am – 12:00pm. (If you depart at 8:00am in the morning)

Tour Guide in Desaru Fruit Farm

Fruit Farm Tour Guide

Desaru Fruit Farm Johor

Basically, you need at least 2 to 3 hours to walk around the Desaru Fruit Farm. The tour guide will guide you through all the journey in Desaru Fruit Farm.

Once you’re done touring the fruit farm, they will provide you a variety of fruit for lunch. Don’t miss them! All the fruit are plucked from their farm.

Fresh Fruit Served At Desaru Fruit Farm

Entrance ticket is priced at around RM25/pax, please note that there is no accommodation provided at Desaru Fruit Farm. Therefore, you need to find the nearest accommodation if you take the 2D1N package.

Herbal Garden At Desaru Fruit Farm

After having your stomach filled with fruit ( Must Try! ), you can consider going to the crocodile farm at Teluk Sengat.

One hour is sufficient to spend in Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm.

Or you can skip the crocodile farm and go to Sungai Rengit area. It is a small town in Kota Tinggi district.

Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm Entrance

In Sungai Rengit area, you can first visit the Desaru Ostrich Farm . The journey from Desaru Fruit Farm to Sungai Rengit area is about 45 minutes to 1 hour drive.

Desaru Ostrich Farm hosted more than 250++ ostrich and it is the largest ostrich farm in Malaysia.

Desaru Ostrich Farm JB

I personally recommend Desaru Ostrich Farm rather than crocodile farm as it is more fun and excited to play with these long-necked creatures.

Your kids may like this farm very much because they will get the opportunity to feed these ostriches with corn kernels or a bunch of vegetables.

Besides that, you get the chance to touch and stand on the biggest egg in the world. Moreover, you can stand beside the ostriches and take photos together. It is definitely enjoyable and good experience with these ostriches.

But it is still worth to go to crocodile farm. At least your kids know how a real crocodile looks like. 🙂

You may refer to the images below to see what you can expect when you reach there.

You Can Touch The Ostrich Egg at Desaru Ostrich Farm

After that, you can spend your evening for a delectable dinner at the top Desaru food restaurant. There are 3 options for your choice.

1. Nelayan Seafood By The Coast

Nelayan Seafood By The Coast

2. Jade Garden Seafood Restaurant

3. Restaurant Super Lobster

After you’ve eaten your dinner, you can choose to head back to Singapore, or you can request the driver to stop over at the Desaru Beach to have fun with your family member.

I think this is a great plan for those who look for only a  DAY Trip in Desaru area. After dinner at about 7:00pm or 8:00pm, you may need at least 3 hours drive to reach Singapore.

Plan for the 2nd day if you would like to have 2D1N Trip. (Desaru Waterpark)

If you are going to have 2D1N Trip, then you can directly stay in Hard Rock Hotel Desaru or Lotus Desaru Beach Resort after having your dinner at Sungai Rengit.

On the second day, you can have a breakfast in the hotel and then check out from the resort and head to Desaru Waterpark for more water activities!!!

The really cool thing staying at Hard Rock Hotel Desaru is the private access to Desaru Waterpark.

1. Desaru  Waterpark (spend time: 6 to 8 hours)

2. Lunch inside waterpark

3. After Desaru Waterpark (heading back to Singapore)

EXACTLY How To Go From Singapore To Desaru Coast: By Ferry, Bus And More! [2024]

Looking for a fun day trip or longer stay by nice beaches close to Singapore or Johor Bahru? The Desaru Coast could be just what you are looking for!

The Desaru Coast is a 22 kilometre stretch of beautiful coastline at the southern end of the east coast of Malaysia facing the South China Sea. Recently, many top resorts have opened here including the Westin , Lotus Desaru Beach Resort and the Hard Rock Hotel . In addition to fabulous beaches, there is also a golf course, a huge water park and many other attractions and activities for tourists.

Despite the big name resorts and great beaches and attractions, the Desaru coast area is still relatively low key and has an untouched feel.

EXACTLY How To Go From Singapore To Desaru Coast: By Ferry, Bus And More! [2019]

The best part is that getting to Desaru from Singapore is easy and relatively fast – you should be there in less than two hours making this a perfect weekend trip, day trip or longer stay when you want some beach time, some different attractions or just want to stay in a great resort for cheaper than you’ll find in Singapore.

Although travel from Singapore to Desaru is relatively fast and easy, working out how can be tricky. As Desaru is an up and coming destination, there is not so much information about it online. To fix this, below I have detailed exactly how to travel to Desaru from Singapore and given you all four options so you can pick the one that best fits your needs and budget.

This means whether you prefer to take the Singapore to Desaru ferry, a bus from Singapore to Desaru, you want a 1 day Desaru tour from Singapore or you’d simply like to drive to Desaru from Singapore or take a taxi, full details are below!

If you aren’t sure what you’d prefer then I’ll help you chose how to get to Desaru Malaysia from Singapore below as well!

So let’s start!

How To Go From Singapore To Desaru Coast, Malaysia

The fastest driving route is pictured below. This also shows you where the Desaru Coast is located in relation to Singapore.

Singapore To Desaru Coast map

What Is The Distance From Singapore To Desaru?

By road, going to Desaru from Singapore is about 100 kilometres. It takes just under two hours to drive but this does depend on where you are coming from in Singapore and how busy the border area is.

It’s also possible to take a ferry from Singapore to Desaru which is less distance and usually faster than other forms of public transport. More below!

Want the Easiest (and BEST) Way to travel between Singapore and Desaru?

We can book a taxi for you from anywhere in Singapore to anywhere in Desaru for a great price.

A taxi is the best way to cross the border as you don’t have to leave the air-conditioned comfort of your vehicle.

Click here for prices and online booking.

Remember when comparing the following options that the ferry and bus are per person prices. If you are more than one person, these can add up to more than the cost of a private taxi. The cost of a taxi is for up to six people.

Option 1: Taking The Ferry From Singapore To Desaru

The Desaru to Singapore ferry is one of the fastest way to get between the two locations on public transport.  Check out our detailed guide on catching the ferry to Desaru here.

The Desaru ferry to Singapore leaves from the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and takes about 90 minutes to get to the Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal.

The Singapore to Desaru ferry schedule is a daily ferry leaving Singapore at 8:30am which returns at 5:30pm. You can see the current schedule for the ferry service from Singapore to Desaru here.

The current price for a ferry ticket from Singapore to Desaru is SG$70 each way.

Click here to see the latest prices for a ferry ticket to Desaru from Singapore.

The biggest downside of the ferry is that you need to get to the ferry terminal in Singapore and it is quite expensive. For a few people, a private taxi is cheaper. You also have to pay extra if you have more than 10kg of luggage.

By the time you factor in extra charges for getting to and from the terminals and any luggage, a private taxi is usually cheaper for two people as well.

*This depends where you are coming from in Singapore and does not include taxis or public transport to get to and from either ferry terminal. You should also arrive at the terminal at least 15 minutes early which is included, but this assumes only 30 minutes travel time to get to terminals. It is for one person.

The Hard Rock Hotel , the Westin and some other hotels in Desaru do have a free shuttle bus between the Desaru ferry terminal and their hotels.

Note: There is currently no car ferry from Singapore to Desaru.

changi point ferry terminal

Option 2: Taking The Singapore To Desaru Bus

There are several options for travelling from Singapore to Desaru by coach.

The best way is to book this coach bus from Singapore to Desaru that will take you directly between the two destinations.

It takes about 2.5 hours and departs at 9am on Fridays. So this only works if you want to depart then.

At the time of publishing, it costs SG$25 and has a convenient drop off point close to the Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark.

This private coach from Singapore to Desaru is my recommended way to go between these places if you don’t have a car or don’t want to pay for a taxi – but only if the timetable works for you. Hopefully, it will go back to being daily soon like it was before the pandemic.

Click here for the latest schedule – hopefully, it’s running more often again!

Again, if there is a group of you and if you have to travel to and from bus pick-up and drop-off points, a private taxi may be cheaper. It’s coming up!

For cost savings, it’s possible to take a longer but possibly cheaper Singapore Desaru bus option. This involves catching two buses – one from Singapore to Larkin Bus Terminal then a second bus to Bandar Penawar via Kota Tinggit and finally a taxi to Desaru Coast. I don’t recommend this due to how long it can take, but it is possible. It also may not save you money if you are travelling alone by the time you pay for the taxi at the end.

For the first bus, take any bus to Larkin across the freeway. You can find Causeway Link bus details here . A bus from Queen Street Bus Mall costs SG$4.80 and takes about 1.5 hours but the time varies depending on the time of day and whether it’s a peak time or not so it could take a lot longer.

For the second bus, you take a Mara Liner to Bandar Penawar. This only runs a few times a day and currently costs SG$3.16. It takes about 1.5 hours. Latest timetables and prices are here .

There used to be a minibus on to the Desaru Coast resort area. However, this no longer runs so at this point, you need to take a taxi or order a Grab taxi. Expect this to cost around SG$9

*The time taken will probably be much longer – I have only included minimal wait times and assumed that the bus across the border is fast. Realistically, it will take longer especially if you don’t arrive at Larkin at a good time to catch one of the limited onwards buses.

Option 3: Taking A Desaru Tour From Singapore

If you are after a Singapore to Desaru package or a day trip to Desaru from Singapore, I recommend you hire a private taxi for the day.

This costs around SG$280 for eight hours and can pick you up and drop you off wherever you want both in Singapore and around the Desaru coast.

Click here to book it now – write in the comments that you require day hire and for how many hours you want it.

This is how we travelled to Desaru on our most recent trip and we were able to visit Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm , Desaru Ostrich Farm and Desaru Fruit Farm on the way.

If you are planning on visiting the Desaru Adventure Waterpark on your trip, you can find discount tickets here.

singapore to desaru jetty

Option 4: Transport From Singapore To Desaru By Car/Taxi

The quickest and easiest option is to drive in your own car or to get a taxi between the two places. If you have your own car, this can be economical. In a taxi, it’s going to cost more.

The Singapore to Desaru drive is pictured above in the map. It takes only about 1.75 hours if you are lucky with the border crossing time, but it does depend on where you are coming from in Singapore.

To book a taxi/private transfer, you can book through your resort. The Hard Rock Hotel Desaru currently charges SG$170 for this.

A better and easier way is to book online with our Singapore taxi booking service. It is just SG$160 from anywhere in Singapore to anywhere in Desaru. This is for up to five passengers, and we have other options for six or seven passengers.

This is how we travelled from Desaru back to Singapore on our most recent trip. So easy!

* The cost will be a lot lower if you take your own car.

Travelling From Desaru To Singapore

For the reverse journey from Desaru to Singapore, all the above methods are still valid. You just need to reverse the instructions. The only cost difference is the causeway bus from Larkin to Singapore which is cheaper.

To book the Desaru to Singapore ferry click here.

Final Words

The Desaru Coast is a fun place to visit and getting between Singapore and Desaru does not need to be hard. You just need to pick your preferred choice of the options above.

I recommend a private taxi between the two places. Consider booking the taxi for the day to visit some attractions on your way to or from Desaru as well.

If you are travelling alone then the ferry can be a good choice or if you are available on Friday morning to bus out then the bus can work too.
