Hundreds of text messages and photos between Formula 1’s Red Bull Racing principal Christian Horner and a female employee were reportedly leaked shortly after he was cleared in a workplace misconduct probe.

Horner, 50, who is married to former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell , was accused of “coercive behavior” toward a female subordinate earlier this month, and was subsequently cleared in an investigation by Red Bull’s parent company.

One day after Horner was cleared, 79 screenshots that contained hundreds of WhatsApp text and photo messages between Horner and a female employee were emailed anonymously to a cadre of leaders in and around F1, including chief executive Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammad Ben Sulayem, according to the Daily Mail .

Hundreds of text messages and photos leaked just hours after F1 Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner was cleared in an investigation into workplace misconduct with a female employee.

Every other F1 team’s principal was copied, as was the father of star Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, the report said.

In all, nearly 200 people were copied on the email, the AP reported.

“I won’t comment on anonymous speculation, but to reiterate, I have always denied the allegations,” Horner said in a statement that a Red Bull team spokesperson read to reporters.

“I respected the integrity of the independent investigation and fully cooperated with it every step of the way,” Horner’s statement continued.

“It was a thorough and fair investigation conducted by an independent specialist barrister and it has concluded, dismissing the complaint made. I remain fully focused on the start of the season.”

In a separate statement, Red Bull confirmed that Horner had been cleared by an “independent investigation” and that the complainant has a right to appeal.

Oracle Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner talks with Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing in the Paddock prior to practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Bahrain at Bahrain International Circuit on February 29, 2024 in Bahrain, Bahrain.

Specific details of what Horner was accused of have not been revealed.

Horner has been Red Bull Racing’s principal since the team entered F1 on a full-time basis in 2005.

Verstappen, the star driver, has won the world championship the last three consecutive years.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner during the first practice session ahead of the Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, Bahrain, Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024.

Even before the email leak, Zak Brown, the principal of the rival McLaren team, called on F1 and the FIA to look into Red Bull’s investigation.

“From what I’ve seen, there continues to be a lot of rumors and speculation, questions,” Brown said.

“I think the sanctioning body has a responsibility and authority to our sport, to our fans. All of us in Formula 1 are ambassadors for the sport on and off the track, like you see in other sports. And so I think they need to make sure that things have been fully transparent with them.”

Earlier this month, The Sun reported that Halliwell, Horner’s wife, was profoundly emotional over the allegations .

“Geri has been in floods of tears all weekend while looking after her kids,” a Halliwell confidante told the outlet.

“She is insisting Christian has done nothing wrong.”

Vince McMahon sex trafficking lawsuit: Details, developments on WWE co-founder

world travel holdings reddit

The fallout from the Vince McMahon lawsuit continues.

In January, a bombshell lawsuit was filed against the founder of WWE , as former employee Janel Grant alleged McMahon took part in sex trafficking and put her through sexual acts that were done with "extreme cruelty and degradation." WWE’s former head of talent relations John Laurinaitis was also named in the suit.

Since then, McMahon has stepped down from his position within the company and there's been several developments into the lawsuit, such as what transpired during McMahon's time running the sports entertainment company, and several star wrestlers have commented on the case.

Here are the latest details on Vince McMahon and the lawsuit filed by Grant:

Vince McMahon still has stock, 'control' in TKO Holdings Group

Despite stepping down from his position as executive chairman and board member of TKO Group Holdings, McMahon still owns stock in the company, according to executive Mark Shapiro. He said in the company's fourth quarter earnings call it is not dictating what he plans to do with the stock.

"He’ll do whatever he’s going to do, and we’re all on the sideline," Shapiro said. "We’ll have a look, we’ll see. We have no idea on timing. We’re not having any discussion with him. He’s given us no point of view on his motive or his plans to sell or not sell, or if he does, how much. So, we’re going to wait around and find out just like you."

In its filings to the SEC, TKO also said McMahon "controls a significant portion of the voting power of the issued and outstanding shares of the company’s common stock." The company also said McMahon plans to reimburse the company the amount of money it spent on a special committee to investigate allegations made against McMahon. By the end 2023, McMahon had reimbursed the company $5.8 million.

Randy Orton, John Cena speak out on lawsuit

Two of WWE's biggest stars this century publicly spoke about the lawsuit in Randy Orton and John Cena.

Orton told  Sports Illustrated he wouldn't be where he is without McMahon, but didn't mince any words about how much it "hurts" reading the allegations.

“I’ve got to say this; I wouldn’t be where I am without Vince McMahon taking a chance on me a handful of times,” he said. "I would not be where I am today without Vince McMahon. But, (expletive) I’m reading this (expletive). What you’ve seen and read, I’ve seen and read. As far as commenting on that, it (expletive) hurts my heart. It hurts my heart."

Cena took a different approach when asked about it on "The Howard Stern Show." He said he would support McMahon through the allegations as he is going to "love the person I love, be their friend."

"I've openly said, I love (McMahon), I have a great relationship with the guy, and that's that. It's largely my construct of operating with honesty and communication. Those are strong leads to handling any problem or achievement. The whole thing is super unfortunate and it sucks. It deals with an individual I love and an entity I love. I want everyone to have the experience that I have," Cena said. "Not only do I tell a friend that I love them, but I switch to the entity and say, 'How can I help?'"

Seth Rollins: 'It's a disgusting situation'

Current World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins addressed the lawsuit while speaking with CBS Sports Radio at Super Bowl 58 radio row.

"It's awful, it's terrible. I hate it, it's a disgusting situation," Rollins said. But we're so far removed from it, you know? When we get to work, it's like 'How do we make this the best possible show we can?"

Rollins added it's something that he wishes he could've done something about.

"You feel terrible and you wish could have seen it or done something, this and that," he saidsaid. "But at the end of the day, your job is your job, and that's what we do. We show up and we try to give the people to pay the tickets to come in the best possible show we can. That's kind of our department."

Feds investigating Vince McMahon sex-trafficking allegations

A report  by the Wall Street Journal said federal prosecutors are investigating sexual assault and sex trafficking allegations against McMahon.

According to the Wall Street Journal, federal agents searched McMahon’s phone last year looking for documents related to any allegation of “rape, sex trafficking, sexual assault, commercial sex transaction, harassment or discrimination” against current or former WWE employees.

Rape reported by late-WWE star resurfaces

Since the news of the lawsuit, other cases involving WWE and McMahon have resurfaced, including the alleged rape of the late Ashley Massaro.

In 2006, Massaro said that she was raped by someone representing himself as a U.S. Army doctor while WWE was doing a tour in 2006. In a sworn affidavit her lawyer released in 2019, Massaro said WWE executives like McMahon and Laurinaitus knew about the reported rape and told the star not to release any details about it.

Laurinaitus' lawyer Edward Brennan told VICE any allegations Laurinaitus helped cover up the alleged rape "is an outright lie," but did admit WWE executives knew about the allegations.

"Johnny, like most upper level management at sometime became aware of the allegations and ensured all proper WWE protocols were followed, including privacy for the alleged victim. We object to the use of the term cover up as no such plan or plot ever took place to hide or assist in the alleged rape," Brennan told the outlet.

Massaro was part of a 2016 lawsuit in which several former wrestlers  sued McMahon and WWE, seeking damages related to the effects of traumatic brain injuries they said they suffered while wrestling. Massaro died by suicide in 2019 at the age of 39.

Attorney: John Laurinaitis is a victim

Despite being named as a co-defendant in the lawsuit, an attorney for John Laurinaitis told VICE his client is a victim in the situation, and appeared to corroborate the claims made against McMahon.

“Mr. Laurinaitis denies the allegations in the misguided complaint and will be vigorously defending these charges in court, not the media," lawyer Edward Brennan told the outet. "Like the Plaintiff, Mr. Laurinaitis is a victim in this case, not a predator. The truth will come out.

"Read the allegations. Read the Federal Statute. Power, control, employment supervisory capacity, dictatorial sexual demands with repercussions if not met. Count how many times in the complaint Vince exerts control over both of them."

Triple H, Cody Rhodes make WWE's first comments on Vince McMahon lawsuit

The news of the lawsuit came just days before the 2024 Royal Rumble premium live event, one of the major pay-per-views for WWE.

After the Royal Rumble, reporters asked men's Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes about the lawsuit, marking the first time someone in WWE would be publicly commenting on the allegations. Rhodes said he and other WWE stars found out about the news as it broke. He agreed with a reporter that the situation casts a "dark cloud" over the company, but he isn't sure what's next for McMahon and WWE.

"As far as TKO, Nick Khan and the board, clearly (they) took it very seriously (and) acted immediately," Rhodes said. "Looking at the future, I don't know the answer to that."

WWE chief content officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque then spoke with the media, but he deflected any question asked by the media by choosing to focus on the positives in the company, like it signing a $5 billion deal with Netflix .

"I choose to focus on the positive and yes, there's a negative but I want to focus on that and just keep it to that," Levesque said.

"I'll go back to what I said before. This is an amazing week for us, and just at this point, I don't even want to get bogged down in the negatives of it," he added. "I just want to focus on the positives and where we're going and we're at the most exciting time of the year for us."

Vince McMahon resigns from TKO Group Holdings

One day after the news of the lawsuit, McMahon resigned as executive chairman and board member of TKO Group Holdings, parent company of WWE.

“I intend to vigorously defend myself against these baseless accusations, and look forward to clearing my name,” McMahon said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports announcing his departure. “However, out of respect for the WWE Universe, the extraordinary TKO business and its board members and shareholders, partners and constituents, and all of the employees and Superstars who helped make WWE into the global leader it is today, I have decided to resign from my executive chairmanship and the TKO board of directors, effective immediately.”

McMahon had served as executive chairman of  TKO Group Holdings , the company that owns WWE along with the UFC. He made a public appearance with the company just days before when  Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was appointed  as a board member for the company, and he rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. TKO had previously said McMahon had no part in the day-to-day operations of WWE.

Vince McMahon denies allegations

After the lawsuit was revealed, a spokesperson for McMahon released the following statement:

"This lawsuit is replete with lies, obscene made-up instances that never occurred, and a vindictive distortion of the truth. He will vigorously defend himself," the spokesperson said.

Janel Grant files lawsuit against Vince McMahon, WWE

Grant's lawsuit filed in Connecticut was first reported on Jan. 25 . In the suit, Grant said McMahon made her sign a non-disclosure agreement about their relationship for an agreed amount of $3 million. However, she alleges she never received full payment from McMahon, and wants to void the agreement with the lawsuit.

Grant detailed her experiences with McMahon, which began when she was hired by WWE in 2019. During her employment, Grant said she was forced into a sexual relationship with McMahon, and he would share explicit photos, videos and details of her to other WWE employees, as well as coerce her into having sexual relations with other WWE staffers, including WWE’s former head of talent relations John Laurinaitis, who is also named in the suit.

In May 2020, the lawsuit states McMahon began to recruit other men and force Grant into sex trafficking. Text messages allegedly from McMahon show he told Grant "i’m the only one who owns U and controls who I want to (expletive) U."

These allegations came nearly two years after  reports McMahon paid upwards of $12 million to four women  in a 16-year span to quiet allegations of sexual misconduct and infidelity. After the reports of payment, McMahon retired as CEO and chairman of WWE and he was  subpoenaed by federal agents in August  regarding the payments.

Party may be over for Russians in Sri Lanka after ‘whites only’ event fuels outrage

The party may be over for thousands of Russian tourists who moved to Sri Lanka amid the war in Ukraine .

Authorities in the South Asian island country said this week they were canceling long-term tourist visa extensions — a move that coincides with outrage over what appeared to be a “whites only” event organized by a Russian-run nightclub in a popular resort town.

But the debt-stricken island’s president raised doubts over whether his government would go through with the cancellations, which would threaten a much-needed source of tourist income.

Russian and Ukrainian tourists must leave Sri Lanka by March 7 after their final free visa extensions expire, according to a notice issued by the Tourism Development Authority. The Immigration Department had said last month that the visas were being extended because of the “non-operation of airlines in the region.”

However, President Ranil Wickremesinghe ordered an investigation into the notice, saying the visas could not be canceled without Cabinet approval.

“The Govt hasn’t officially decided to revoke visa extensions previously granted to these tourists,” his office said Sunday on X .

Facing sweeping travel restrictions after the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago , many Russians flocked to Sri Lanka when it offered near-indefinite stays. Russia became Sri Lanka’s largest source of tourists after nearby India last year.

Nearly 200,000 Russians and 5,000 Ukrainians visited the country of 22 million last year, official Sri Lankan tourism department data showed.

It’s unclear how many remained in the country beyond the usual duration of a tourist visa, which is 30 days. But thousands are believed to have remained — including those seeking to avoid being drafted into the military — and some have set up restaurants and nightclubs.

It’s also unclear whether the end of the visa extensions was related to the recent outcry, but one of those nightclubs was at the center of the outrage over a planned party.

A poster advertising a “White Party” last weekend at the Sarayka Lounge in Unawatuna, a coastal town about 3 miles from the southern tourist hub of Galle, specified a white dress code, as is typical for such events.

But the poster, which was shared widely on social media and seen by NBC News, also included a line that said “Face Control: White,” drawing outrage from social media users who interpreted it to mean that only white people could attend the event.

Three Russian DJs were expected to play at the event, according to the poster.

The bar said Friday on Instagram that it had canceled the event and “will never support various racist statements or organizations.”

President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe

A user who claimed to be one of the party’s organizers apologized on Instagram , saying, “There was no malice or racism in this.”

“We were sitting in a cafe and discussing that people living far from their homeland have a lot in common and it would be great to gather everyone in one place,” said the user, @geo_ecstatic.

“We wanted to meet expats who have been living here for a long time and love Sri Lanka,” the user said, adding that he and his family had to leave the island because of abuse and threats arising from “this stupid idea of making a white party.”

In a statement about the “controversial night event,” the Russian Embassy in Colombo said that “according to unconfirmed data, the main promoter as well as the owners of a bar who agreed to accommodate the party are Russian citizens.”

Russia “strongly condemns all forms of racial discrimination,” it added, calling on its citizens to follow local laws and customs.

Sri Lanka has been struggling with an economic crisis since it declared bankruptcy two years ago with more than $83 billion in debt. More than half of that debt is owed to foreign creditors, with the worsening living conditions in the country leading to widespread protests and the ousting of then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in 2022.

Since then, the new administration has been pulling out all the stops to raise more cash, including a bailout by the International Monetary Fund and an increase in taxes and prices for electricity and fuel.

The increased cost of living has pushed some Sri Lankans to the streets again, with police resorting to tear gas to quell a protest in Colombo, the capital, last month.

Sri Lanka has also tapped into tourism, providing 30-day visas with multiple extensions of up to six months, with Russians and Ukrainians receiving even more because of the war in Ukraine.

Reddit Files to Go Public, in First Social Media I.P.O. in Years

The message board site, founded in 2005, detailed its financial performance in a filing. It is the last of an early generation of social media companies to aim for a public offering.

A hallway with the word “reddit” and the company’s symbol taking up a large wall.

By Mike Isaac

Mike Isaac has covered Reddit and social media companies since 2010 from San Francisco.

Reddit, the community-focused message board site, filed to go public on Thursday, paving the way for it to be the first major social media company to debut on the stock market in years and a test for private companies after a drought in initial public offerings.

In an offering prospectus , Reddit disclosed its financial performance in preparation for selling shares to investors. The San Francisco-based company reported that its revenue rose more than 20 percent as its losses narrowed last year. It added that it had 73 million daily users and more than 100,000 active communities.

The prospectus kicks off a process to the stock market, with the 18-year-old company set to meet potential investors to whet their appetites for buying its shares. Reddit could go public on the New York Stock Exchange in a matter of weeks under the stock symbol RDDT.

Reddit’s bankers are seeking a valuation of at least $5 billion in its I.P.O., according to two people familiar with the matter. That is roughly half of the $10 billion valuation the company fetched in a 2021 private financing round. The talks are continuing, and the price could still rise or fall in the weeks ahead.

Reddit is the last of an earlier generation of social media companies to aim for the stock market, after Facebook’s high-profile offering in 2012 , Twitter’s in 2013 and Snap’s in 2017 . In the years since, the social media industry has changed, facing scrutiny for misinformation, hate speech and other effects. Some of the companies have shifted directions; Facebook was renamed Meta, and Twitter was bought by Elon Musk , who took the company private in 2022 and renamed it X.

Reddit’s move is also highly anticipated after a lull in initial public offerings. Just 108 companies went public in the United States last year, roughly a quarter of the number that debuted in 2021, according to data compiled by Renaissance Capital. Some of the biggest tech offerings last year were Arm, a chip designer , and Instacart , a grocery delivery company.

“We are going public to advance our mission and become a stronger company,” Steve Huffman, Reddit’s chief executive, said in a founder’s letter included in the prospectus. “We hope going public will provide meaningful benefits to our community as well. Our users have a deep sense of ownership over the communities they create on Reddit.”

Mr. Huffman added that the company wanted “this sense of ownership to be reflected in real ownership — for our users to be our owners” and that “becoming a public company makes this possible.” Reddit said it would reserve a chunk of its shares at the I.P.O. price for 75,000 of the company’s most prolific users if they wished to purchase them.

In its prospectus, Reddit said revenue in 2023 was $804 million, up about 21 percent from $666 million a year earlier. The company lost $90 million in 2023, compared with a $158 million loss the year before, according to the prospectus.

Some of its largest shareholders include Advance Magazine Publishers, Tencent Cloud Europe, Vy Capital, Fidelity Management, and Sam Altman, a former Reddit board member and the chief executive of OpenAI.

Reddit’s path to the public markets has been long and rocky. Founded in a University of Virginia dorm room in 2005 by Mr. Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, the site began as a destination for anonymous users to come together and discuss anything from popular TV shows, to guitars, makeup and power washers.

The site was unique in that it largely focused on tightknit communities, mostly anonymous, all moderated by volunteers who self-governed their forums, or “subreddits,” based on rules of their own making. It became known for “A.M.A.s,” otherwise known as the “ask me anything” sessions, sometimes with public figures like former President Barack Obama, Microsoft’s Bill Gates and the actor Nicolas Cage.

The company raised hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over the years, including $250 million and more than $410 million in two financing rounds in 2021. Investors include Fidelity Investments, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital and Tencent Holdings.

Like other early social networking efforts, Reddit initially eschewed offering advertising and making money. It instead focused on forms of revenue that came from community ideas, like a user-generated e-commerce system and awards that users could buy one another. Those ideas are still in play.

Reddit eventually embraced advertising based on its topic-focused communities. Brands like Laneige, for instance, targeted ads to a forum called Makeup Addiction, one of the most active subreddits, in which users discuss cosmetics and how to apply them.

The site has also built an emerging data licensing business based on its enormous corpus of conversation data, which has become increasingly important amid a frenzy over artificial intelligence. A.I. models are trained on gobs of such data so that they can become more powerful. On Thursday, Reddit announced a licensing deal with Google, which has used Reddit data to train and build its A.I. systems.

“We expect our data advantage and intellectual property to continue to be a key element in the training of” future A.I. models, Mr. Huffman said in the letter. The company has a number of undisclosed licensing agreements to use its data and expects to make upward of $203 million over the next three years from those contracts, according to the filing.

The site has had its share of struggles. It faced controversy after controversy over its refusal to moderate communities in its early years, including its role in spreading misinformation during the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 , and hosting racist and misogynistic content in some of its smaller subreddits. Last year, Reddit faced a user revolt after changing some of its rules and restricting third-party developers from using the site’s content without paying for it.

Reddit has reversed its position on moderation and has updated and more strictly enforced its policies in recent years, making it more attractive for marketers to place advertising across the site.

The company also had a revolving door of leaders in its first decade, being helmed by four chief executives before Mr. Huffman returned to lead the site in 2015 .

Reddit cautioned potential investors that it faced challenges and potential risks as a public company, including the rise of large language models, the underlying A.I. systems that could potentially aggregate and synthesize the site’s content and let users view Reddit without visiting the site or seeing advertising.

The company may also face difficulty courting brands in a digital ad market dominated by Meta and Google.

“Reddit may face a daunting challenge in growing its advertising business, given the gap between its platform’s capabilities and those that are best in class,” said Eric Seufert, an independent mobile analyst who closely monitors social media companies and advertising.

The company also warned that it was heavily dependent on its community for moderating the platform, and that future revolts or departures could harm the site.

“We have many opportunities and much to do,” Mr. Huffman said.
