In an interview with Variety earlier this month, Rife said that early on in his career, he mainly attracted a female demographic on TikTok, but his shows today attract both men and women.
"One of the biggest misconceptions of things I get ridiculed online for is people are like, 'Oh, he only has a female fan base,'" he said. "In the beginning yes, because I did blow up on TikTok which is very female-dominant. So, I get that perspective."
"I would argue this special is way more for guys. I wanted to make this special for everybody. I pride myself on making my comedy for everybody. It's not for a specific demographic," Rife added.
Why did Matt Rife's Netflix special cause controversy?
Rife has come under over a joke about domestic violence against women early on in "Natural Selection," with fans pointing out that it was women who helped make him famous.
In the special, Rife tells an anecdote about being at a restaurant with a friend, and noticing that the woman serving them had a black eye.
Rife goes on to say he wondered why her managers didn't relegate her to working in the kitchen, instead of interfacing with customers, before joking: "Yeah, but I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn't have that black eye."
The joke was heavily criticized online, with fans accusing him of turning his back on the fans who made him popular in the first place.
"the way women catapulted matt rife into popularity and the second he gets a comedy special on netflix he immediately betrays them with a joke about domestic violence," posted one person on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

"The girls and gays were Matt Rife's biggest demographic and he used his Netflix special to pander to toxic masculinity. It feels like a betrayal," said another post on X.
On Monday, Rife responded to the complaints on his Instagram story with what turned out to be a disingenuous apology — leading to further backlash.
"If you've ever been offended by a joke I've told- here's a link to my official apology," he wrote in his story.
The link included in the story, however, directed followers to a website that sells special needs helmets, resulting in Rife also being accused of ableism.
On X, one person wrote: "So… between his boring misogyny and the run-of-the-mill ableism, is it safe for me to say that I've never understood the appeal of Matt Rife's comedy?"

Comedy star Matt Rife's 'hottest' mom Christina Reeder says she's 'average on the looks'

Comedy superstar Matt Rife called one Iowan the “hottest mom ever” — and now, she is speaking out.
Christina Reeder first went viral with Rife after a cheeky video of the pair brought a dash of joy to the internet.
The original video , which contains sexual references and profanity, was shot at the Funny Bone comedy club in West Des Moines.
“You are so hot,” he told Reeder who brought him cookies and a suggestive T-shirt.
Offensive joke? Comedian Matt Rife sparks controversy with joke in Netflix special.
The March video has more than 6 million views and made the central Iowa grandma a TikTok star in her own right with more than 760,000 followers.
Then, in November, Reeder and Rife went viral again after reuniting at a show in Ames .
( Editor's note: Video of their reunion contains profanity and sexual language that may offend some readers.)
'I'm like average on the looks,' says Iowa hot mom Christina Reeder
What sets Rife apart for her is his crowd work spurred by instant comebacks.
“He seriously is one of the most intelligent comedians out there because he’s so witty, he’s so quick,” Reeder told the Register.
Reeder also believes that Rife gets a bad rap for his good looks. And speaking of good looks, she doesn’t consider herself as attractive as Rife does.
“I don’t understand any of this at all," Reeder said. "Like I get it, it was a funny interaction or whatever, but for people — like when he said ‘hottest mom ever,’ Are you kidding? I’m like average on the looks.”
She receives dozens of direct messages on Instagram each week from hopeful suitors. She said she's stayed in touch with Rife as well.
Matt Rife calls Christina Reeder a 'sweetheart' in swoon-worthy summer interview
In an E! News interview from June , Rife called Reeder a “sweetheart” and discussed their “incredible” interaction that helped fuel his fame. He also said, "she was the hottest mom ever in the middle of Iowa where I didn't even know they made hot moms."
When Rife returned to the state for a stop on his latest tour, Reeder and a group of friends made the trip to Ames.

“Last time I was in Iowa, a woman gave me cookies on stage,” Rife said before cheers during the Nov. 2 show. “Her name’s Christina and I haven’t spoken to her in forever. Is there any chance she’s at this show?”
She was. Following a slew of jokes, he FaceTimed Reeder's daughter Maggie which also took place when they first met.
Christina Reeder brings Matt Rife another present after Ames show
After Rife’s show in Ames, Reeder brought the up-and-coming comedy superstar another present.
And no, it wasn’t cookies. The pair exchanged Instagram direct messages after the show, and she had a chance to gift him a John Lennon vinyl in person.

Lennon was Rife’s grandfather’s favorite musical artist. In March, around the time they went viral, he posted a tattoo he got in honor of “The Beatles” solo star.
“John Lennon was my grandpas favorite artist and we decorated his house with his art all the time,” Rife wrote on a March 18 caption on Instagram .
They took photos together. Then, Reeder drove back to her home — in the middle of Iowa.
Raygun creates 'hot moms are made in Iowa' shirt inspired by Matt Rife's videos with Christina Reeder
On Nov. 21, Des Moines-based T-shirt company Raygun announced a sassy new shirt inspired by the interactions between Rife and Reeder.
The shirt is black with red lettering.
"Hot moms are made in Iowa," it reads.
Reeder asked that a portion of the sales go toward Help-a-Heart, a nonprofit that provides assistance to families affected by congenital heart defects. The shirt sells for $24.95.

Comedian Matt Rife sparks controversy with joke in Netflix special. Is he performing in Florida?
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Matt Rife ’s new standup special is sparking some controversy online.
The popular comedian is currently in hot water after opening his Netflix comedy special "Natural Selection" with a joke aimed at domestic violence victims.
Who is Matt Rife?
Matt Rife is a 28-year-old comedian hailing from Ohio. He blew up on social media over the past year for his viral comedy clips shared to his 6.4 million followers on Instagram and 18.2 million followers on TikTok .
In 2019, he competed in NBC’s “Bring the Funny” comedy competition. The comedian has also appeared on multiple episodes of MTV's "Wild 'N Out" as well as "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," “Burb Patrol” and “Fresh Off the Boat.”
He's currently on his 'ProbleMATTic World Tour,' which hits over 100 locations throughout North America, Australia, and Europe. He came to Florida at the start of October in Pensacola, Orlando, Hollywood, St. Petersburg, and Jacksonville.
He’s released three comedy specials: "Only Fans," "Matthew Steven Rife," and most recently the Netflix Special "Natural Selection."
Who is Matt Rife? 7 facts to know about comedian.
What is the 'Natural Selection' Netflix special?
"Natural Selection" is Rife's latest project in the midst of his world tour, released on Wednesday, Nov. 15. The description on the streaming platform reads "From his problem with protection crystals to his beef with social media trolls, comedian Matt Rife holds nothing back in this rollicking stand-up special."
Currently, it holds the top spot on Netflix's most streamed movies. It was filmed at Washington, D.C.’s DAR Constitution Hall back in September.
In an interview with Variety, Rife also claimed this standup special was more "for guys." He said that while his fanbase was initially women due to his TikToks, it’s now a “50/50” split.
“And that’s one thing that I wanted to tackle in this special was showing people that despite what you think about me online, I don’t pander my career to women. I would argue this special is way more for guys,” he told Variety reporters.
“I wanted to make this special for everybody. I pride myself on making my comedy for everybody. It’s not for a specific demographic. I think if people would just give it the chance without going into it and being like, ‘Oh, only girls like him,’ or ‘People only like his face.’ If you give it an opportunity, I think you’d like it.”
What was the insensitive joke Matt Rife made during his Netflix special?
It happens within the first three minutes of the standup special. Appearing before the Washington crowd, he talks about how much he loves the area and the state of Maryland as well.
Except for Baltimore. Rife immediately goes into a bit about how "ratchet" the city is compared to the rest of the state, giving the audience an example.
“I’ve only been to Baltimore one time, I ate lunch there, and the hostess who like seats you at the restaurant had a black eye. A full black eye. And it wasn’t like, ‘What happened?’ It was pretty obvious what happened."
"And we couldn’t get over the fact that we’re like, ‘This is the face of the company? This is who you have greeting people?’ And my boy who I was with was like, ‘Yeah, I feel bad for her, man. I feel like they should put her in the kitchen or something where nobody has to see her face, ya know?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, but I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn’t have that black eye.’”
After the audience laughs and lets out a few groans, Rife admits that was "just testing the waters, seeing if y’all are gonna be fun or not. Just wanted to see. I figure we start the show with domestic violence, the rest of the show should be pretty smooth sailing after that.”
How did fans, social media users reach to the joke?
Both viewers and longtime fans took to X to express their anger and disappointment over the joke. One user wrote "if I need to put up with jokes about being punched in the face for not being a good enough servant, then I'm completely unbothered if you don't find me 'fun.'"

Had never heard of Matt Rife. Clicked his special because it was listed as the top TV show on Netflix. I lasted 5 min. Making fun of a domestic violence victim. Making fun of Baltimore. Of astrology girlies. No actual jokes. "these girls I date are dumb" Mirror, get one. — Leggup (@LeggupLeggup) November 20, 2023

Tiktok, where the comedian gained most of his recent popularity, users also had quite a lot to say about the special and his joke.
Some users did come to his defense, saying it was "just a joke."
Write this down all you Matt Rife haters out there. It’s not the comedians fault that you were too stupid to understand the joke. Also, I’m pretty sure he would like to thank everyone interacting good or bad for helping him generate enough to help him buy a big, fancy house. 🖕😬 pic.twitter.com/KLE9LN537x — THUNDERCAZ🫣🫶⚡️ (@CazzThunder) November 21, 2023
Has Matt Rife addressed the controversy from his Netflix special?
He apologized … just not really.
He took to Instagram on Nov. 20 to share his thoughts on the reaction to his joke, posting a mock apology on his story.
He included a link to his “official apology” for those "offended by a joke I told” that was labelled “Tap to solve your issue” on his Instagram Stories. Those who clicked the link were led to a website selling helmets for people with special needs.
What are the reviews of 'Natural Selection' on Netflix?
Viewers of the special weren't fans of not just the joke, but seemingly the entire set.
Natural Selection currently has an 17% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, seeing a 1.6 out of 5 rating. The personal reviews call out the standup for its jokes, writing and timing.
"This is perhaps the worst excuse for a comedy special I've ever seen. The "jokes" are so lazy, so overdone. Bad writing. Bad delivery. Zero laughs. There will be people commenting on the offensive/mean spirit of the material but even if you remove the offensiveness from the equation, the material is still garbage," one reviewer wrote.
There were a few reviews in support of Rife and the show, with one review adding:
"I think Matt did a good job and he will grow into himself as he does more big venues but he earned his spot and he is entertaining so I'm happy to see what is next. Also, I'm disappointed that so many people are holding him to a higher standard than other comics who tell some tasteless jokes."
Has Matt Rife gotten into controversy before?
While a recurring cast member of Wild N Out, Rife gained his first controversy when he tried to shoot his shot with actress Zendaya while she appeared on the show.
During a game to try to make the celebrity guest laugh and spit out water, Rife ended up grabbing her face and saying "Spit that water out, so I can get your number please."
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Matt Rife (@mattrife)
Fellow cast members rushed to Zendaya's side to defend her, letting Rife know he crossed the line. The clip later went viral for the actress rejecting him on television. Rife addressed the incident in TikTok this year, saying it was just the show and the pair were good now.
Earlier this year, he also received backlash for his comments about women’s bodies during an episode of the Stiff Socks podcast .
In an interview with The New York Times following the podcast, Rife said commented on the situation, adding “You’re mad at somebody that’s just trying to make you laugh? That’s such an insane concept to me.”
Is he performing in Florida any time soon?
For those still wanting to see Rife or catch a glimpse of him, the comedian is performing a sold-out show in Naples at the Off the Hook Comedy Club on Dec. 14 through Dec. 17.

Jerry Mouawad's strange, fascinating, and funny new play "Special K" mashes master playwright Luigi Pirandello's reality puzzles with vaudeville, tragedy and time hopping romps through the Black Plague of the Middle Ages and back to the dark year of 2020. Anne Sorce (The Black Lizard, Fallout) stars. “Special K” opens February 14 through February 22 playing for six shows only on Fridays and Saturdays 7:30pm at the Imago Theatre in Portland, OR. In a remote, unnamed location, a motley group of supporting actors await the entrance of HER, the Queen. A few of the actors are veterans of this particular theatrical enterprise, a few are newer to the mix, and all unsure what they will be called to do when she enters. There is no script, only a few vague instructions, some peculiar names and props, and a whole lot of mystery as to what is occurring in the present moment. Ancient and modern myths co-mingle, gender roles and sexual identities are explored, time becomes disassociated, and borders begin to dissolve. Inspired by Pirandello's "Henry IV", writer/director Jerry Mouawad's humorous , haunting and deeply provocative "Special K" draws on many sources in popular culture, to explore inner and outer dimensions of theatrical convention, mental health issues, and the very nature of reality. A stellar cast of Imago regulars play the motley crew and include Anne Sorce (Black Lizard) as HER with Sean Doran (Hughie), Emily Welch (Human Noise). Danny Gray (Leonard Cohen is Dead), and Stephanie Woods (To Fly Again), with Imago new comers Matthew Sunderland and Colleen Socha completing the comedic and tragic troupe. Matt Rife is under fire for making a joke about domestic violence and then offering a fake “apology” mocking people with special needs.
The stand-up comedian, who rose to fame after garnering a huge following on TikTok , opened his new Netflix special, “Natural Selection,” with a joke about an abused woman.
After viewers took to social media to label the bit “disrespectful” and “offensive,” Rife hit back with a sarcastic post on his Instagram Story Monday.
“If you’ve ever been offended by a joke I’ve told – here’s a link to my official apology,” he captioned a photo of himself onstage.

The social media sensation, 28, labeled the link, “Tap to solve your issue.” However, it deceivingly directed his fans to purchase special needs helmets from Medicaleshop .

Backlash to the post was swift, with several users taking to Twitter and Instagram to slam Rife for his “ableist” response.

“Matt Rife making a sexist/DV ‘joke’…then sending people to a website to special needs helmets as his ‘apology’. There’s a difference between an edgy joke and just being disrespectful and distasteful,” one person wrote.
“f–k you @mattrife people with disabilities aren’t your punchline after making a misogynistic dv joke. be funny without being a gross human or you’re just not funny???” another chimed in.
“Not Matt Rife building his platform on catering to his female audience and then opening his Netflix special with a domestic violence joke,” a third wrote.

The joke in question in Rife’s latest special, which began streaming on Nov. 15, was about a “ratchet” Baltimore restaurant where “the hostess who seats you had a black eye.”
“A full black eye. It wasn’t like, ‘What happened?’ It was pretty obvious what happened,” he said, alluding to domestic abuse.
“But we couldn’t get over, like, this is the face of the company? This is who you have greeting people?” the comic went on.

“And my boy, who I was with, was like, ‘Yeah, I feel bad for her, man. I feel like they should put her in the kitchen or something where nobody has to see her face.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, but I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn’t have that black eye.'”
Page Six has reached out to reps for Rife for comment.
Aside from comedy, the “Wild ‘N Out” alum has become known for romancing a slew of famous women , including Kate Beckinsale and Lucy Hale.

Moscow theatres
Moscow has always been and still remains the city of theatres. This magnificent capital attracts theatregoers from all over the world. Here are the theatres we like and truly recommend you to visit.
Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre
On 28 March 1776, Catherine II granted the prosecutor, Prince Pyotr Urusov, the privilege of maintaining theatre performances of all kinds, including masquerades, balls and other forms of entertainment. And that is where Moscow’s Bolshoi ( Big ) Theatre starts its history. The building of the Bolshoi Theatre, one of Moscow’s symbols, was opened on 20 October 1856, on Tsar Alexander II’s coronation day.
The Bolshoi Theatre is a symbol of Russia for all time. It was awarded this honor due to the major contribution it made to the history of the Russian performing arts. This history is on-going and today Bolshoi Theatre artists continue to contribute to it many bright pages.
Visit the theatre to watch the magnificent Russian operas and ballets. Make sure you are going to see the performance on Historic Stage.

Maly Theatre

One of the oldest Moscow theatres – the Maly (Small) Theatre – is situated on Teatralnaya Ploschad (Theatre Square) neighboring the famous Bolshoi (Big) Theatre. The history of the theatre dates back to 1756 when the theatre company was founded by Catherine the Great’s will. During the 19th Century the theatre has become a favorite stage for some of the Russian most noted playwrights, in particular Ostrovsky who premiered 40 of his 52 plays here.
If you want to enjoy classical Russian theatre, see plays written by Chekhov, Pushkin, Ostrovsky and Gogol the Maly is probably one of the best choices. The theatre follows Russian drama tradition and makes classical productions. So with a little prior knowledge of the general plot of the play will be able to follow the action quite well without the help of subtitles.

Moscow Art Theatre

The theatre was established by K. S. Stanislavsky and V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko in 1898 under the name Moscow Art Theatre (MKhAT). This is the first theatre in Russia, who practiced the real reform and together with young actors created modern repertoire. Nevertheless, in today’s Theatre classic world literature is staged as well as the modern patriotic literature. It is loved by Muscovites and the capitals guests for traditions, wonderful cast and bold experiments.

Among the founders were Oleg Yefremov, Galina Volchek, Igor Kvasha, Liliya Tolmachyova, Yevgeniy Yevstigneyev and Oleg Tabakov, now famous Russian actors. The debut production was Victor Rozov’s play «Forever Alive».

Theatre of Nations

The fascinating building in pseudo-Russian style has been taken by theaters from 1885. Nowadays, Theatre of Nations, a unique structure that has no analogues in national theatre, is located there. Today Theatre of Nations is one of the most successful producer project with ambitious and realized art plans. The activities of the theater are in many ways exclusive. Thus, it introduces the Russian audiences to outstanding examples of European theater. The Theatre of Nations holds a variety of theatre programs, organizes national and international festivals, presents the best Russian and foreign productions of all genres and trends and produces its own performances. Lack of a constant troupe allows keeping star cast and genre flexibility — from drama and comedy to post-drama and ballet.
