Frequently Asked Questions

Can you drink the tap water in Bangkok?

Although technically safe to do so as certified by the World Health Organization, we recommend avoiding drinking tap water if you can afford to do so whilst going on your Bangkok excursions - even most people who live there don’t drink tap water. Buying bottled water is both very accessible and cheap anywhere in the country, so even though drinking from the tap is most likely ok, we still recommend taking some with you so you’re not taking any risks with your once in a lifetime Bangkok vacation! Make sure you keep plenty of bottled water on you throughout your tours in Bangkok to ensure you stay properly hydrated - it’s better to have too much than not enough!

How long should I stay in Bangkok?

Bangkok is a hub of activity, whether you’re interested in history, culture, architecture or much more. Although you could spend weeks exploring all around the city with our private Bangkok tours or at your own convenience, we’d recommend a minimum of 3 days, (or slightly more if you can), which should give you enough time to discover all the fun activities in Bangkok that it has to offer. It’s also worth figuring out the best time to visit Bangkok so you can get the most out of your visit to the city.

Are there enough activities for solo travelers and families?

Absolutely! Whether you’re a family with young children or going it alone, we have plenty of exciting excursions from Bangkok to suit what you want. Many of our activities are perfectly suitable for young children and adults alike - our family friendly tours in Bangkok are packed full of fun things to do for the kids and exciting or interesting things for adults, whereas activities like our Bangkok nature & adventure tours or Bangkok sightseeing tours are great for solo travelers or couples. Whatever your pace, our tours in Bangkok can be perfect for your vacation!

Bangkok Tours & Travel

Bangkok Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Travelers tend to either adore or revile Bangkok. Awash with exotic wats (temples), crisscrossed by busy klongs (canals), site of the amazingly intricate architecture of the Thai Royal Palace, and center of one of the world’s most beloved cuisines, Bangkok is also choked with traffic, beset with political protests, and home to one of the world’s most wide-open red light districts. In sum, it’s never dull, and, in the end, you have to experience it for yourself – a must-see on any Thailand tour .

The Thai name for Bangkok is a mouthful to say the least. But it’s something every local learns in elementary school: "Krung Thep Mahanakhon amon Rattanakosin mahintara ayuthaya mahadilok phoP noppharat Ratchathani Burirom udomratchaniwet mahasathan amon piman awatan Sathit sakkathattiya witsanukam Prast." Thankfully there is a short version: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (or Krungthep on some maps), which means means "City of Angels" in English.

Bangkok is Thailand’s capital, located in the southern part of the country, on the Gulf of Thailand. It’s gained a reputation for being one of the world’s busiest most vibrant cities, full of character - known especially for the nightlife and food scene. There’s a reason it remained as Travel and Leisure’s “World’s Best City” for 4 consecutive years.

In every part of the city, something different is happening, from a street full of Middle Eastern restaurants to upscale shopping. Crowded walking streets, among market stalls, street food, and various knick knacks for sale as motorcycles whizz by you, adding to the heartbeat of the city.

There is plenty to see and do in Bangkok even if you’re not interested in the bar scene. Hidden markets and shops down entrancing allies, food choices like you wouldn't believe, and tons of historical and cultural sights. Head to Rattanakosin Island in Phra Nakhon District to escape the crowds, or explore the Grand Palace as well as multiple other historical landmarks, including several Buddhist temples.

Bangkok Food Tours

Although Thai food is among the most popular foods in the world, travelers only usually know the staple thai dishes of green & red curry, pad thai, and thai fried rice. What travelers don’t know is that Thai food is very regional and highly varied. Going on a guided culinary tour will ensure that you get out of your comfort zone and learn more about Thai delicacies and traditional foods.

You will be connected with actual local people and restaurants out of the tourist loop, learning more not just about food and its origins, but the culture of the people who make and consume it.

Some tours also teach you how to cook the food you eat, which is a great way to really connect with the food, and interact with Thai people. It also means you will pick up new skills you can keep after returning home. Other trips might involve staying in a Bangkok homestay , or actually require you to hit the markets (floating or regular!) in order to get your ingredients.

No matter the shape of your Bangkok food tour, it is a great way to interact with your host city and experience Thai culture in an entirely new way.

Top Activities in Bangkok

Bangkok provides a great introduction to Thai culture. Regional art museums, theater, history, and a local food scene make this the perfect start on a tour of Thailand . And once you’ve had your fill of culture, you can enjoy a meal of street food before taking in the city's infamous nightlife.

1. Grand Palace - The Grand Palace of Bangkok has its beginnings in the late 1700s, when construction began. It served as a home for Thai kings for over 100 years, and today is a museum and historical landmark - still used for ceremonies and gatherings of the countries government officials.

It’s name certainly describes it well, as the palace is indeed quite grand, both in scope and decoration. There is a fascinating blend of international architectural styles, reflecting the many uses and important periods of Thai history the building has touched.

2. Wat Arun - Known as the “Temple of Dawn” this beautiful location has attracted visitors for centuries. Situated along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun is made up of colorful spires and designed as a representation of Mount Meru - a significant Buddhist symbol. Many river cruises along Chao Phraya stop here for tours of the temples.

3. Floating Market - Thailand is known for its many markets, in particular the alluring floating market. Today, this is a bit of a tourist trap, and much less of a local market experience, however it’s still worth doing for the novelty. It’s great for travel photography enthusiasts as well. Every nook and cranny reveals something new, and many bright colors swirl around, reflected in the water.

4. Chatuchak Weekend Market - Perhaps the second most well known market in Thailand is Chatuchak Weekend Market. Especially notable for its size, the market attracts over 200,000 people a day, and has over 15,000 booths selling everything from food to crafts.

Give yourself ample time to explore - part of the allure to the Chatuchak market is getting lost among the stalls and appreciating the incredible diversity and craftmanship in products, as well as sample the many delicious food items.

5. Jim Thompson House - Commonly referred to as one of America’s first major entrepreneurs, Jim Thompson was a silk trader and art collector in the early twentieth century. He lived in Bangkok for a time before mysteriously disappearing in 1967 while on vacation in Malaysia. His home is set up a bit like a time capsule, with original furnishings and the large collection of art pieces he owned.

6. National Museum - Set in what was an ancient palace, the National Museum in Bangkok is generally regarded to be the largest museum in Southeast Asia. An impressive amount of artifacts fill the rooms, and the many exhibits are best experienced with a guide who can provide more extensive historical context.

7. Wat Pho - The “Temple of the Reclining Buddha”. This is a classic Bangkok attraction, situated right behind the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It features a 150 foot long statue of Buddha in a reclining position, covered in gold leaf. Truly a sight to behold.

The Bangkok “Backpacker District”

Bangkok, and to that end the entirety of Southeast Asia, has gained a reputation over recent years as a popular destination where travelers, particularly western travelers, come to live the backpacker lifestyle.

Many a life long traveler has stated that their love of travel began in this magical corner of the world, where cultures collide, friendly locals present a welcoming vibe, food and drink is cheap, and you meet countless other young and old travelers seeking all that Southeast Asia has to offer.

Bangkok is a bit of a capital in this realm. For a taste of the backpacker spirit, which is still very much alive and well in the wake of surging tourism to Thailand , head to Khao San Road. A concentrated area of hostels, bars, restaurants, and shops. This is a great place to come to meet other international travelers and learn some hidden secrets in Bangkok and Southeast Asia.

Photography Tips for Bangkok

There are three main areas you’ll want to focus in for Bangkok photography: Temples, Markets, and Nighttime.

Temple Photography in Bangkok

Temples often present challenging lighting situations as they can be dark inside, or heavy with shadows. Practice shooting with your flash or different settings in order to get the best possible shots.

You’ll want to have the best lighting possible to capture the many intricacies and details throughout the temple. Also know that many temples in Bangkok utilize large amounts of gold. When hit with sunlight, gold is extremely reflective - practice shooting in these conditions so you don’t get overly bright flares.

Market Photography in Bangkok

Markets are catnip for travel photographers. They reveal wonderful nuances, delightful “day-in-the-life” moments in time as locals buy their groceries or meet with friends. They are also full of bright colors, patterns, and craftsmanship.

Then you have the quintessential street food shot, the steam rising up from various pots serving delicious Thai delights, adding to the incredible ambiance. A photograph couldn’t capture the noise and the aromas, but it can present the look and feel.

To get the best photography in Bangkok’s markets, you first need to know which market you’ll be attending. Among the most popular market destinations is the Floating Market.

This incredibly unique space has been attracting tourists to Bangkok for years. Today the Floating Market is not really populated by locals doing their shopping, but if you give in to the touristy nature, you’ll get some spectacular photographs.

Be careful with bringing a lot of heavy or bulky equipment as your tour the canals and stalls. You’ll be on the water most of the time, in a very open boat, in close proximity to a lot of hands. The fewer items you need to keep an eye on the better. Natural lighting will give you the best photos - when shooting with a telephoto, optimize for the darker areas to get the many details.

Night Photography in Bangkok

Bangkok is one of the best cities for night photography. The city come alive with activity, mystery and intrigue are everywhere. The many vibrant and busy streets of bars and restaurants and other establishments fill the streets with a unique population of travelers and local business owners.

Night photography is notoriously difficult, especially when the lighting is unpredictable. In Bangkok you’ll also have to contend with a lot of people, which can block the light you might get from doorways. Consider using a tripod and external flash with filtering so the photograph still picks up the details in the streets, visible to the naked eye, but not to the camera.

Today, you can stroll through the ruins of the former empire and experience history up close.

The archaeological site of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to breathtaking temple ruins such as Wat Mahathat, with its famous Buddha head entwined with the roots of a tree, or Wat Phra Si Sanphet, known for its characteristic chedis.

In addition to the historical sights, the surrounding countryside, with its rivers and green spaces, invites you to relax and explore.

When is the best time to visit Thailand?

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid and at times (like other South-East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's north, east and west are great to visit from November to February, when the weather is cooler and dryer. If heading south, it's best to travel from January to April as these months provide conditions optimal for diving and snorkelling. This is peak time, however, so be aware that popular places like Chiang Mai, Ko Samui and Phuket can get particularly busy. It can also get quite busy from July to August as it's the northern hemisphere school holidays.

The monsoon season is from July to November, so it can get quite wet and the weather may be uncomfortably hot and humid for those who aren't accustomed to it. Yet travelling during this time can provide a different picture of Thailand, and is generally a less crowded time of year. March to June is less wet but is the hottest time in terms of temperatures. If you don't mind the heat then this can be a good time to go on holiday to Thailand to avoid the crowds.

Can I drink the tap water in Thailand?

Drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Thailand. Avoid drinks with ice and make sure to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Is tipping customary in Thailand?

Tipping isn’t customary in Thailand, but feel free to leave restaurants, drivers or service workers a small tip if the service has been particularly good. It’s always appreciated.

  • The Airport Rail Link (ARL) connects with the BTS Skytrain at Phayathai Station, making it a convenient option for visitors staying along the Sukhumvit Line. Trains depart on a frequent schedule from the basement floor of the airport terminal.
  • Taxis from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok cost 250 to 400 baht, depending on traffic and your destination, and are available from the taxi stand on the ground floor of the terminal. You often have to wait in line for a taxi to become available. A 50 baht fee is applied to all taxi fares departing from the airport.
  • You can also book a private airport transfer to be waiting with your name on a sign in Arrivals. A cheaper option is to book a shared transfer from the airport to your Bangkok hotel in a minivan too.
  • Bangkok’s somewhat confusing public bus system is the cheapest way to get into the city from Suvarnabhumi. Buses depart from the Transport Centre close to the airport for a wide range of destinations.
  • See Travel Happy’s Bangkok Airport Guide for more info

From Don Muang Airport

  • Don Muang Airport is Bangkok’s second airport. It primarily serves domestic and short haul international flights. There is currently no direct train service to Don Muang Airport, so you’ll need to catch a taxi from the airport into the city.
  • Taxis depart from the taxi stand on the ground floor of the airport terminal. Turn left once you exit customs and you’ll find the stand. Like at Suvarnabhumi Airport, a 50 baht fee is applied to all taxi fares from Don Muang Airport, and there is often a queue to get a taxi.
  • You can also book a private airport transfer to be waiting with your name on a sign in Arrivals. A cheaper option is to book a shared transfer from Don Mueang airport to your Bangkok hotel in a minivan too.

Explore Bangkok the fun way on a private tour with local transport such as skytrain, water taxi, and the famous tuk tuks.

We start the day at the wholesale flower market which opens around the clock.  Fresh flowers are big business here since they are indispensable in Buddhist ceremonies.  Thais use them for both worships and decorations.  Apart from colorful sights and beautiful aromas, this is also a good opportunity to taste various kinds of fresh tropical fruits.

With a fun tuk tuk ride we go from the flower market to our next stop, where we visit Wat Pho that houses the country's most beautiful reclining Buddha with an impressive length of 46 meters.  Besides being the temple with a stupa containing the ashes of Chakri Dynasty's  first king, this temple was once a "medical school" for people who wanted to study Traditional Thai Medicine.  Courses on Traditional Thai massage are still being offered.

Then, we cross the river to Bangkok landmark, Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn.  The 67 meters high corn-shaped pagoda or (Pra Prang in Thai) represents Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Buddhist-Hindu cosmology.  The Prang which is "supported" by demons, monkeys, and divinities is surrounded by the four continents.  The structure's exterior is decorated with small pieces of Chinese porcelain, a unique feature introduced in the reign of King Rama III.

We take a break at a riverside restaurant where a delicious Thai lunch is freshly prepared for you.

Later on, we take you on a relaxing long-tailed boat tour to see the local life in the Venice of the East.  Explore the canals and enjoy the view of wooden houses on stilts.

Optional attractions are also available.  If you want to make the most of your time in Bangkok, you can personalize your tour on the booking form :

  • Replace Wat Arun with a stroll down the streets of Chinatown for a more local experience in one of the oldest and most interesting districts of Bangkok, you will still be able to see Wat Arun from the long tailed boat.
  • Add Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (emerald Buddha Temple), if you don’t mind the crowds then this is a spectacular place to visit, we will start around 8:00.
  • Enjoy a 30-minute relaxing traditional Thai or foot massage at Wat Pho temple

This private tour in Bangkok is organised exclusively for you, no others will join. You will be in trusted hands with our professional English speaking licensed tour guide.

Note:  This tour can be organised with luxury minivan if more comfort is required, a tuktuk ride can still be done. Minivan is also recommended for families with small children, and groups of 5 or more participants.  You can book this version at: Bangkok Highlights tour by minivan .

Mary S – March 25, 2024

We considered various tour options before our trip to Bangkok and honestly felt like we won the lottery in having Air as our guide! It was a long hot day to visit so many city sites but Air kept us going. She’s very knowledgeable as a guide and speaks terrific English (our biggest concern in choosing a guide) but what truly makes a guide is their ability to connect with their clients in an engaging way and for this reason, I give her an A+ rating. She is fun & funny and radiates the warmest positive energy. We will always have the best memories of Bangkok thanks to her!

Niels Christian Mohr – March 22, 2024

This tour is fantastic. We have done it more than once and doing it again this summer. Air is a superb guide with great english skills and knowledge and makes the tour very special with focus on you.

Phil L – March 22, 2024

Tour was fantastic. Air, the tour guide, was so knowledgable and friendly and made the tour absolutely fantastic

Louize H – March 13, 2024

We had just the best day with Petch. What a super fountain of knowledge she is, and so much fun. We could not have had a better tour guide, and we loved every minute, totally down to petch’s amazing tour. Thank you.

UK Tourist – March 13, 2024

We loved the public bus ride at the start of the day which gave us a glimpse of the streets and main sites of Bangkok. We also loved the canal boat tour which gave us an insight into how some Bangkok residents live and how the canals operate. We also caught a glimpse of the 62m Buddha which was fantastic. Wat Arun was stunning and it was interesting to hear about the first king and the creation of the current dynasty. We would have loved to have heard more about the architecture and symbolism used throughout. Wat Pho is of course spectacular and had it not been for the heat, we would have spent longer wandering through the grounds and observing the beautiful architecture and frescos. The walk through the Grand Palace was a little rushed due to the extreme heat but we’d love to come back perhaps much earlier in the morning to beat the crowds and midday heat. We’d love to learn more about its history and architecture.

Annabelle M – February 21, 2024

Nes, was amazing, knowledgeable and spoke very good English. Would highly recommend this trip there is a lot of walking, and strongly suggest you have good walking shoes that are easily removable and perhaps a hat for shade especially in the summer. The fruit and veg at the flower market were amazing what an fabulous city and this tour enables you to see the highlights.

René K – December 5, 2023

We booked full tour, we spent more then 8 hours with our guide Air. Was great, good english skills and knowledge about history.

We recommend, book it and you will not disappointed.

Aya – April 25, 2023

I booked the tour for my elderly parents (50+). They have nothing but wonderful things to say about Ms. Raht. My dad admittedly can be insensitive sometimes, but Ms. Raht handled the tour with grace and pleasant energy all throughout. She made all possible considerations for my parents and they felt truly special. I will 100% recommend Ms. Raht, and thankful to BKK for having such a gracious tour guide.

Angela B – November 21, 2022

All perfect, well done.

Krista – February 26, 2020

We had a lovely day with beautiful sitings at a nice pace. Also really liked the food and the small shopping possibility Air is very nice and funny and knows a lot and shares nicely. Thank you very much!

Tina G – February 9, 2020

Great intro to Bangkok. Our guide Onn was super! She was personable, enthusiastic and tailored the tour to our preferences/pace. This was the first of two tours with her, and we looked forward to the next one.

Chadde O – December 23, 2019

Fantastic tours from Air! We really liked the local transport and the local immersion like having tea and coffee with the locals. Loved it! And your local restaurant selection was awesome too! Some of the best food of the trip! Highly recommend! Thank you! Thank you!

Zoe – December 14, 2019

Great intro to BKK. Nadia was amazing!

Tanya – December 10, 2019

We have very good time with Raht. Thank you so much, we recommend to every one 😉

fstlyf – November 23, 2019

Friendly, great communication, organized and knowledgable. Ms Raht took us where locals eat. excellent!

Rachel B – November 20, 2019

An excellent day of sight seeing with the perfect mix of information and fun. The day was organised fantastically to see all of the great sights without ever feeling rushed. Lunch and drink stops were a welcome break from the heat and timed by our guide perfectly. Air was very knowledgable and judged perfectly the level of information that would be interesting for our group. She was always happy to answer any questions we had and have fun with us too.

Hannah – November 16, 2019

Lovely sequence and breaks with food, comfortable transport. Air was perfect, we absolutely enjoyed our time with her and she felt like a friend showing us around. Highly highly recommend her!

RoKi – November 15, 2019

We had a great tour and a great time with Air, who was a kind, gentle and considerate guide, who looked after us so well. Also she knows everything about the places we visited and we received a good amount of information. We also laughed a lot together. We sure miss her and one can be lucky to stroll through Bangkok with her.

LeanneH – October 31, 2019

Raht led us on a fun and informative tour of Bangkok. We got to see the Vegetable and Flower Market, Wat Arun, Wat Pho, a nice Longtail Boat ride and lunch, and finally a massage. It was a great day for my husband and I and also for our kids, ages 13 and 14. The lunch was great, Raht ordered some dishes for us based on what we liked and didn’t like. She was so personable and fun. Had we not gone on this tour, we would have never seen so much in our one day in Bangkok.

Kerstin – October 27, 2019

Tina was a great guide. She was attentive, informative and friendly. The tour was the right balance between temples, markets and relaxing time. We all loved it.

This 10-day road cycling tour from Bangkok to Phuket navigates Thailand's tropical shoreline and tarmac, offering stunning beach views, limestone peaks, and lush scenery. Enjoy daily bike servicing, fresh seafood, and the warm hospitality of the “Land of Smiles.” Scenic, challenging, and exhilarating, this tour is as much about discovery as it is about the ride. Each night, we’ll unwind at comfy hotels and amazing beach resorts in order to relax and refuel for the next day. If you’re into friendly locals, tropical beaches, and amazing food, this is the bike tour for you!

We’ll meet at a Bangkok hotel before we transfer to the start of our ride in Phetchaburi (approximately 2 hours). This ride is a gentle start to the trip as we head out of Phetchaburi and into rural Thailand, along roads flanked by paddy fields and palm trees. We’ll then ride along the beach into Cha-am and on to the beach resort town of Hua Hin. The town is closely tied to Thai royalty.

The last 20 km / 12.4 miles is on a main road, but there is a wide shoulder to ride. If the traffic proves to be too heavy, this section can be transferred. We’ll top off our day with an amazing seafood dinner in the center of town.

Meals : Lunch, dinner Cycling : 68 km / 42.3 miles Elevation : +194 m / +637 ft, -194 m / -637 ft Accommodation : Putahracsa

Hua Hin city in Thailand

We’ll head out of Hua Hin, part of the way taking advantage of a new cycle lane, towards Sam Roi Yot (300 hundred peaks) National Park. This park has spectacular limestone formations and freshwater marshes in between the peaks. We’ll ride on quiet back roads along beaches with striking limestone peaks as our background.

After the park, we have a short ride on the main road, about 20 km / 12.4 miles, before heading back to the coast, passing many small villages. The final section is along the beach to Prachuap Khiri Khan. The selected hotel has some great views and, as the town is well known for having some of the finest seafood in Thailand, we’ll feast on local specialties at dinnertime.

Meals : Breakfast, lunch, dinner Cycling : 113 km / 70.2 miles Elevation : +584 m / +1916 ft , -579 m / -1900 ft Accommodation : Hadthong Hotel

Sam Roi Yot National Park in Thailand

We’ll leave the hotel and ride along the beachfront road for about 12 km / 7.5 miles before hitting the main road. This section is 9 km / 5.6 miles long. We are now well away from the main tourist areas, and the roads are quiet and in good condition. We’ll head towards a serene beach and our nature-friendly boutique resort. It’s time to relax in a hammock and listen to the surf.

Meals : Breakfast, lunch, dinner Cycling : 71 km / 44 miles Elevation : +344 m / +1129 ft , -344 m / -1129 ft Accommodation : Baan Grood Arcadia

Ban Krut beach in Thailand

This is a rest day, and we’ve earned it. We could spend it relaxing at the beach, wandering around the fishing village of Ban Krut, or taking a dip in one of the two salt water pools at the resort.

Meals : Breakfast Accommodation : Baan Grood Arcadia

Rest day in Thailand

With our legs fully rested, it’s time to do some serious cycling. We’ll ride 112 km / 69.6 miles on quiet side roads with very little traffic. Our route sticks to the coast, giving us views of the sea to the left and rugged mountains on our right. We are passing through Thailand’s narrowest part as the border with Burma is less than 20 km / 12.4 miles away at some points. We’ll end the ride just north of Chumphon, at another secluded and quiet beach.

Meals : Breakfast, lunch, dinner Cycling : 112 km / 69.6 miles Elevation : +693 m / +2274 ft , -693 m / +2274 ft Accommodation : Nana Beach Resort

A beach in Chumphon, Thailand

We’ll cross the Isthmus of Kra, which separates the Gulf of Thailand from the Andaman Sea, and is just 44 km / 27.3 miles wide at its narrowest point. We’ll head west for about 60 km / 37.3 miles on an undulating road that cuts through the lush jungle-clad mountains that surround this area. The hills and the twists and turns in the road make for some varied riding.

As there are few roads through the mountains, we’ll spend most of the day on the main road. However, there is a climb of about 3 km / 1.9 miles starting at the Pun Ya Ban Waterfall, and then it is downhill and flat all the way to the town of Ranong. This is a spa, fishing, and border town, which makes for an interesting vibe.

Meals : Breakfast, lunch, dinner Cycling : 140 km / 87 miles Elevation : +1142 m / +3747 ft, -1134 m / -3720 ft Accommodation : Sook Hotel

Cycling to Ranong City

We’ll ride through valleys today, so the road will be rolling, but there are no extreme climbs, just enough ascents and descents to make the ride interesting. We’ll pass many villages and children waving and yelling out “farang, farang” (lit. foreigner). After some great views, the ride ends in a lovely little resort nestled in a valley and surrounded by a lush tropical rainforest.

Meals : Breakfast, lunch, dinner Cycling : 128 km / 79.5 miles Elevation : +1052 m / +3451 ft, -981 m / -3218 ft Accommodation : Vannamei Resort

Palace in Ranong, Thailand

We’ll continue our epic cycling tour south, riding from valley to valley towards the picturesque Khao Lak. We have little choice but to take the main road for half of today’s cycle. The road flattens out a bit as we reach Takua Pa, a former Portuguese settlement. The region was an important tin-dredging center in the first half of the 20th century, but there remains little evidence of the mining as rubber plantations have covered the dredged land.

Later on, we’ll ride through one of the areas devastated by the 2004 tsunami. You’ll be amazed to see how quickly this area has bounced back and been rebuilt. We’ll arrive early to the hotel, so you can spend some time in the amazing pool this afternoon.

Meals : Breakfast, lunch, dinner Cycling : 72 km / 44.8 miles Elevation : +518 m / +1700 ft, -587 m / -1926 ft Accommodation : Apsara Beachfront Resort & Villa

Takuapa old town in Thailand

The last leg of the tour is to the tropical paradise of Phuket, the largest island, as well as a province of Thailand. There are a couple of small hills to conquer before we leave Khao Lak, but then it’s flat all the way down to Phang Nga and Phuket. This road is in excellent condition, and we’ll make good time towards our resort on Nai Yang Beach. Phuket is connected by a bridge to the mainland, and we’ll stop for a celebratory picture before riding on to our hotel.

Meals : Breakfast, lunch, dinner Cycling : 106 km / 65.9 miles Elevation : +741 m / +2431 ft, -743 m / -2438 ft Accommodation : Nai Yang Beach Resort

A fantastic way to see Thailand, you get to cycle in areas you would not normally visit as a tourist and get to eat in very local restaurants. Our guide Natt and van driver Suwat were amazing, you couldn’t improve on the help and service they provided to our group. I will definitely book another tour with SpiceRoads.

Fantastic experience. We have done everything from self-guided trips to custom Backroads and this perfect for us; lovely/clean accommodations w/o being unnecessarily over the top for a cycling trip. Guides and support were top notch. Would definitely do it again.

This cycling trip was absolutely wonderful. It was very well organized, the guides were outstanding, the accommodation was very pleasant, and the food was incredible. The support provided by the guides and drivers for exceeded any that I have received on other trips with other companies.

Cycling with Spice Roads was a wonderful way to see Thailand. The local knowledge of the guides was very much appreciated as well as the support they provided during the rides. The drivers were also very friendly and most helpful. Although their English was limited they were eager to help with anything we needed, including keeping our water bottles filled and having our bikes road ready each day. The accommodations were also very nice with a few of them being fabulous. I especially loved our last night’s dinner on the beach in Phuket while the sun was setting.

This epic bike tour from Bangkok to Phuket is 100% on road, and it’s designed with road bikers in mind. We will ride 789 km in 8 riding days . The first half of the ride is on flat roads, mainly following the beach.

Some of the distances are quite long, but the roads are smooth, making it an achievable distance on a road bike. The trip is fully supported , and your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of cold drinks, ice, and fresh fruit.

Fitness, of course, will be a huge asset on those long days and on the undulating hills. The tour is fully supported, and the bus is always close at hand for those that find the riding too difficult.

The roads are 100% tarmac and in good condition . There are some hills, mostly rolling with the exception of the steep but short hills in Phuket.

Nothing is mandatory to bring on this bike tour from Bangkok to Phuket except your insurance , but some things might come in handy. Your guides will supply a suggested packing list on time.

Here’s a list of the equipment that might come in handy:

  • Day pack large enough to carry all the items listed (around a 25-40L bag)
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
  • Comfortable cycling clothes
  • Spare clothes for layering
  • Waterproof rain jacket
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Headlamp or flashlight

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

Because some people can’t imagine going on a trip without their own beloved bicycle, we do not provide them as part of this tour. However, your guides offer standard road bikes, carbon road bikes, and E-bikes (limited in number and size) that you can rent in advance upon booking this bike tour . If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is a road bike in good mechanical order.

Bike Repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube, and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non-negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle . Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.
