I drew a map for SIM card locations in the arrivals areas at Edinburgh and Glasgow airports.

Scotland SIM Cards: A Visitors Guide With Maps to the Best Options

Chris

For tourists, students, business people and any visitors arriving in Scotland for 1 week to 1 year, this guide describes some of the best SIM cards available in Scotland. In this guide I compare SIM card providers based on their data, coverage, ability to make and receive phone calls, and convenience of purchase. I’ve put together this information based on my research and experiences travelling around Scotland and living in the UK.

When arriving in Scotland, I found the best SIM cards to be:

  • For visitors staying less than one month , to get an EE SIM card with options starting from £15 for 5GB and purchased from the WH Smith at either Edinburgh or Glasgow Airport
  • For visitors staying more than one month , consider a Tesco Mobile SIM card with plans starting from £10 for 4GB. The EE SIM available at airports can also be good value.

It can be harder to find a Tesco SIM card, they’re not available at the airport. This is why I usually prefer going for EE. It’s conveniently available at the airports, and if there are any issues they also have a large network of shops throughout the UK. Tesco Mobile can be purchased at most Tesco stores.

I’ve included airport maps with the location of the WH Smith shops marked on them below. I’ve also written specific guides on buying a SIM card when arriving in Edinburgh and Glasgow . These guides also include details of nearby Tesco shops.

SIM cards purchased in Scotland can be used throughout the United Kingdom and currently (pre-Brexit) most of Europe.

This guide to prepaid SIM cards for visitors to Scotland comes in 3 parts:

  • Part 1 : Visitor SIM cards ideal for short, long, or in between visits
  • Part 2 : Maps for where to buy SIM cards at Edinburgh and Glasgow airports
  • Part 3 : Roaming to Scotland: Who gets the most value from it. And where to roam with a Scotland/UK SIM

Part 1: Visitor SIM Cards

Visitors staying less than a month.

If I’m only staying somewhere for a few weeks (or less!) I look for convenience when picking up a SIM card.

EE is convenient - it’s sold at Edinburgh and Glasgow airports (at the WH Smith, see map below).

With a £15 top-up, an EE SIM card includes 1 :

  • 5GB of data
  • 500 mins of calls
  • 30 day validity

I found EE to have the best coverage out of the options when arriving at Glasgow and Edinburgh.

If in need of more data, EE can be topped-up with £20 for 10GB or £30 for 20GB.

Alternatives :

  • Lebara, which has comparable coverage, has a £15 top-up that includes 5GB of data and 1000 mins of calls to international numbers 2
  • 3 Mobile, 10GB for £15 with unlimited calls, but coverage isn’t as widely available through Scotland when travelling outside of towns 3 .

A Three SIM card can be used to roam to dozens of countries outside the EU, such as the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil at no extra cost. I’ve found Three Mobile has very cheap data rates compared to other country’s local SIM cards (particularly New Zealand). It can be worth it to buy a Three Mobile SIM card in the UK and use it in one of the countries listed here: http://www.three.co.uk/Support/Roaming_and_international/Roaming_Abroad/Destinations

If looking to save a small amount, also consider Tesco Mobile. As I describe below though, Tesco Mobile can really only be purchased from a Tesco store, which aren’t as easy to get to as the newsagents and convenience stores that sell EE, Three, or Lebara SIM cards.

Visitors staying more than a month

If staying more than a month in Scotland, there is more time to spend shopping around for the best deal.

While I personally prefer EE or Vodafone (which also has a £15 for 5GB of data plan), there are other good options.

Tesco mobile starts from £10 and can be good value for visitors 4 . Plans with Tesco Mobile include:

  • £10 for 4GB of data and 500 mins of calls
  • £15 for 8GB of data and 1000 mins of calls
  • £20 for 16GB of data and 2000 mins of calls

The drawback to Tesco is that you have to find a Tesco store to purchase a SIM card. If staying a more than a month or two in the UK, the savings of doing so can make it worth it. I’ve included details on how to find Tesco stores in my SIM card guides for Edinburgh and Glasgow .

Alternatives to Tesco Mobile:

  • EE, Vodafone 5 , 3, and Lebara, as I mentioned above
  • Giffgaff, with plans such as 6GB of data for £10 with unlimited calls 6 . Giffgaff is essentially an online only store: SIM cards are ordered online for delivery and I’ve heard it’s hard to speak to someone if there’s a problem.

When I lived in the UK and visited Scotland, I found the best coverage to be with EE, Vodafone and O2 (Tesco and Giffgaff). Three (3 Mobile) didn’t perform quite as well.

In major towns and cities in Scotland (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Perth, Inverness etc.) there is generally good coverage with every mobile phone network.

For some of the popular tourist areas however, coverage can vary a little:

  • Around Loch Lomond: 3 doesn’t have great coverage, the others claim they do
  • Islay: All providers cover the village areas, outside the village coverage is a bit sparse
  • Stirling: All providers also have coverage here.

When I’ve visited Scotland I find that in general, villages, towns, and major roads (such as the A9) have decent coverage with all providers.

Identification requirements for Scotland SIM Cards

There are currently no requirements to provide identification when purchasing a SIM card in Scotland or anywhere else in the UK.

Part 2: Maps to Airport SIM Cards

At Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, the WH Smith shops sell SIM cards to arriving visitors. the WH Smith shops at either airport sell the following SIM cards:

  • EE, £15 top-up for 5GB of data
  • 3, £15 top-up for 10GB of data
  • Lebara, £15 top-up for 5GB of data and 1000 mins of calls to select countries outside the EU.

When arriving in Edinburgh from another country, the closest shop to buy a SIM card is WH Smith. Walk forward after clearing customs and it’s on the right near the exit.

9 BEST International SIM Cards for Travel (Buyer’s Guide • 2024)

SIM cards are a royal pain in the butt when travelling. Every time you land somewhere new, you have to perform the same song and dance of going out of your way to get a new sim pretty much as soon as possible.

Usually what happens is that you land in the airport and then you either get ripped off buying a SIM card there or navigate to town without any connectivity. Once you’re in town, you have to navigate a foreign city sifting through local SIM providers, various plans, and also probably getting lost along the way. It’s not the ideal way to start a vacation and I cannot even count the hours I’ve lost shopping for sims in new countries.

That’s why buying one of the best international SIM cards is THE way to go.

An International SIM card is one which will work all over the world meaning that you never have to change it again – no more messing around at the O2 Kiosk in strange airports!

Now, to set the record straight, while there are cheaper travel SIM cards in existence, they still aren’t exactly cheap. Nine times out of ten, a local SIM card is always going to be the cheaper option for budget backpackers.

Maybe you’re a digital nomad who always needs to be connected, maybe you’re a high-flying businessperson with fancy business attire who makes busy business calls while on holiday or maybe (like me) you are just sick of having to change sims.

Either way, this is the list of the best international SIM cards on the market! I’ve done all the leg-work and the research to deliver an international SIM cards review in full. So let’s get ourselves connected.

What is an international sim card, the best sim cards for international travellers, international data sim cards for digital nomads, social media addicts, and tinder aficionados, a quick review of each sim card, frequently asked questions about travel sim cards, should you buy an international sim card.

This isn’t the whole roundup but it is my personal pick of the best international SIM cards worth looking into, each one serving a different niche.

Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card

  • > Extremely reliable in Europe

International SIMs, roaming SIMs, travel SIM Cards whatever: a rose by any name can still order you a pizza when you don’t want to leave the guesthouse after all right? That’s what an international SIM card is, a SIM card that will have you hooked up from “anywhere” .

Why did you put ‘anywhere’ in quotes?

Because it’s a highly variable anywhere. “Anywhere” really means from the countries that the international SIM covers. That said, some of these travel SIM providers cover over 200 countries.

That also said, there are only 195 countries in the world so I’m not sure how they mathed those numbers out. Still unsure, have a look at our guide to local vs international SIM cards .

Looking for Best Coworking Hostel in the World?

Come visit  Tribal Bali  – Bali’s first specially designed, custom-built co-living hostel…

Bali’s most special backpacker hostel is finally open…. Tribal Bali is a  custom-designed, purpose-built co-living hostel  – a place to work, rest, play and stay. A place to find your tribe and hands down the best place in Bali to hustle hard and make new friends…

So, how does an international SIM card work?

Without getting too technical, an international SIM card isn’t programmed to one specific network. It’s programmed to operate on a number of networks in a number of different geographical locations – specifically, networks using the GSM (Global Systems of Management Communications) framework.

That’s why to use your cell phone internationally with a travel SIM card it needs to be:

  • GSM-compatible (many phones are).
  • Unlocked, i.e. not tied to a provider.

Do be sure about that unlocked phone bit before you go ahead and buy a new one.

Hacker googling

Basically, global SIM cards will plug into a local network from the country you’re travelling to… Consensually, of course.

That’s why coverage so strongly varies among the many international SIMs. Some SIM cards are for worldwide use and programmed accordingly. Some SIM cards are for international roaming in certain regions like Asia, the USA, or Europe (usually, omitting a third of Europe in their coverage).

For example, you’ll need a different sim card for Canada and the USA in most cases, but in Europe you’ll more than likely be able to use the same one.

Who benefits from buying an international SIM card?

Well, like I said, not so much the longterm backpacker types . A local SIM card is pretty much always cheaper and much more practical (and reliable) for long stays in any country. Unfortunately, actual cheap international sim cards don’t exist yet.

Country-hoppers , on the other hand, may want to consider buying some sort of prepaid international SIM card. Buying local sim cards in Europe for only 1-2 weeks of use eight times in a trip is nobody’s idea of fun, especially if you care about data usage and double especially if you care about plastic ending up in the ocean.

Businessman talking on the phone with a internationally roaming

People living the digital nomad lifestyle may also benefit from a travel SIM. Though a local SIM is much more equipped for longterm stays in a country, sometimes the options or service is crap and sometimes you’ll spend long stretches in transit which is a perfect time to crunch out a few hours. Besides, there is no rule that says you can’t have two SIMs. A prepaid international sim card might be the best option here (more about that later).

Lastly, business people or people that take frequent short trips will benefit from a SIM card for international travel. I might be stereotyping here but I kinda feel that these folk are less concerned with the costs associated. Plus, most SIM cards for overseas use tend to have 1-year validity for purchased credit, so it’s totally viable to park your SIM after a trip and then pop it back in for the next one.

Beginning the list are the top international SIM cards for travelling that do everything a SIM card should do: call, texts, and mobile data . These SIMs have some pretty major coverage globally and for most travellers in the world, are more than sufficient.

Of course, there has to be a best-of-the-best in this international sim card comparison. So first up–the best travel SIM card!

#1 The Best International Physical SIM Card – OneSim

OneSim

Ok, so what makes OneSim the best travel SIM card? It’s a fine difference between the first few candidates but OneSim edges out on top for a combination of versatility, pricing, and reliability.

First up, they offer multiple different SIM cards each catering to different travelling needs INCLUDING (but not limited to) 2 awesome e-Sim options :

  • OneSimCard e-Sim World (From $9.95) – Coverage of 150 countries with free incoming calls on EU numbers.
  • OneSimCard e-Sim Asiana (From $9.95) – Specially designed for Asia and Oceania. Data packages available.

If your phone is not yet e-Sim ready, then worry not because OneSim also offer some excellent deals on plastic sims:

  • OneSimCard Universal ($29.95) – Coverage of over 200 countries but with a more limited data service (50+) countries.
  • OneSimCard Expedition ($34.95) – Offers much the same coverage as the OneSim Universal travel SIM but with way more data coverage. It’s the choice for the explorers.

OneSim

How OneSim Works

You’ll get a $10 bonus credit with any OneSIM roaming SIM card purchase, but once that’s gone, you’ll have to continue buying data plans. Rates vary wildly by both the choice of travel SIM card you are using and the country you’re in so you’ll need to check these rates to see if they suit you.

You’ll receive two numbers: a European (Estonian) number and a choice of one from the USA, UK, Australia, or Canada. Incoming calls on the primary European number is free in a large coverage of countries or starting from $0.25/min otherwise. Outgoing calls also start from $0.25/min (dependent on locations) and receiving texts are free.

Casual data rates start at rather hefty $0.20/MB . However, what makes this such a good prepaid international SIM card is that there is a lot of choices to lower your costs. You can buy data bundles ranging from one/two weeks to a month divided by zone or region. There are also discount plans and bundles available for call rates. This makes the OneSIM one of the best international SIM cards for data as well.

So, is it worth it?

Although not strictly the cheapest international SIM card on the market, the wealth of choices means that you can tailor your SIM card to your world travel needs and minimize costs. The added bonus is that OneSim has been kicking around for a while so they know the market well.

They provide a reliable service, as well as a bunch of neat extras, to keep their clients happy chappies. If you’re looking for the best sim card for international travel, OneSIM is definitely one you should consider getting.

#2 Best Global eSim Provider – GigSky

Gigsky-branded

If you have a modern phone (iPhone 11 , Samsung Galaxy S21, etc or above) it will probably be eSim compatible. This means that you don’t actually need a plastic SIM card but can simply download an eSim via GigSky the same way you would download an app.

When I first heard of eSim about one year ago, it was something of a niche product simply because most travellers were using phones and devices that were not eSim compatible. However that is changing fast and by 2024, an estimated 80% of travellers will use eSim. The eSim marketplace is a very exciting one and the providers are contently innovating to come up with some new, better, cheaper packages – according to our research, GigSk are currently leading the pack.

travel sim card scotland

How GigSky Works

I had the pleasure of reviewing Gigsky and It’s really very simple. You either download the GigSky App (which we do recommend) or else go to their website and check out their “Global Plans”. You buy the package you want (in the 5GB World Plan) and download it not your phone BEFORE you fly, using either a link or a QR code.

The joy of eSim is that you can install it before you leave and then activate as soon as the plane touches down meaning you are rocking and rolling all over the world before you even get your luggage.

GigSky offer 1 Global Package only – 5GB over 30 days for $69.99. I can be topped up (if you somehow burn through all 5GB) but it cannot be extended past the 30 days.

So, Is It Worth It?

Well, $69.99 is a lot for a 30 day package but International Sim Packages do not come cheap. GigSky also have a wide range of global carrier partners meaning their offer better connectively than most platers in this space.

Overall though, in terms of sheer convenience yes GigSky is worth it – you you can browse for and install an eSim from the comfort your device and get it ready to use before you even leave home which saves a whole lotta hassle. However, the package does NOT include an actual phone number which is a bit of a bummer.

#3 Great Global eSim Package – Sim Local

TravelSim

Sim Local is recognized as a global leader in the travel SIM card and eSIM retail market. The company specializes in serving global travellers, enabling them to stay connected while avoiding expensive roaming charges. During my review of Sim Local , I was impressed to see they provide local SIM cards and eSIM profiles directly to customers through a variety of channels, including retail stores, kiosks, vending machines, a mobile app, and an eShop.

Their services are aimed at offering significant savings on data, calls, and texts compared to traditional roaming options, and they also offer a range of mobile handsets and accessories tailored to the needs of travellers.

How Sim Local Works

First up, note that Sim Local are an eSim-only provider so if you’re phone is not eSim ready…go elsewhere. Providing it is, you simply hop over to their site or get the app and check out their global packages. At the time of writing the site offers their own brand one for just $10 for 3 days, or an Orange one that costs $28.00 for 14 days.

I’ll be frank, eSims are still often more expensive than buying physical sims but they are a lot easier to install and to operate and best of all, you can install them before you even leave home. In my view, $28.00 for 10GB of data over 14 days is good value for an international sim but bear in mind it don’t come with a local numero.

#4 A Worldwide SIM Card – WorldSIM

WorldSIM

WorldSIM gets a mention on this list because it’s another puller in the market with some comparatively awesome rates. It’s also got some really weirdly expensive outlying rates. As such, we certainly don’t feel like it’s a fit for the best SIM card for international roaming.

How WorldSim Works

The WorldSIM international SIM card has no purchasing fee- woo! Now, before you get too excited, it does require a top-up of credit at purchase.

That means that you’re paying a minimum of $33.75 plus shipping . For $67.50 of credit, shipping is free.

The casual rates for outgoing calls, texts, and data usage are the cheapest I’ve found so far with data coverage extending to countries missed out on by OneSim. Except, a lot of the rates in various countries for incoming calls are shockingly high.

As for the data bundles? No idea. Their website isn’t working for that page and is just stuck in an infinitely loading loop.

Our gut says no. But, you do you. You shouldn’t base your decisions on buying an international SIM card on the gut instincts of a stranger online. All the same though, our gut says no.

Between the mildly bait-and-switch-y “$0” SIM purchasing fee, the janky and unwieldy website, and the weird incoming call rates that could potentially trap an unwitting consumer, WorldSIM in review doesn’t feel like an international SIM card worth purchasing, especially in comparison to other choices on the market.

REI is one of America’s biggest and most-loved outdoor gear retailers.

Are you turn-of-the-century generational that eschews actually phoning people online for commenting how much you miss them on their latest Insta post? What a coincidence – me too! Rather than risking being ripped off when buying a local SIM card, get your hands on an international data card instead.

These are the best international  data SIM cards for those of us that scoot by without the extras.

#1 Best Data Only eSIM Card for International Travel – Jetpac

Jetpac eSim

Jetpac is a Singapore based eSIM company who offer packages, designed primarily for travellers and Digital Nomads. They offer various data plans that can be used across many countries, and the service includes features like free airport lounge access if your flight is delayed.

Jetpac eSIMs are compatible with a range of devices, including many models from Apple, Samsung, and Google. To activate a Jetpac eSIM, users need to sign up on the Jetpac website or app, choose a plan that fits their travel needs, and then scan a QR code to install the eSIM on their device.

We love Jetpac for its ease of setup and reliable connectivity. JetPac makes it a handy tool for international travel, ensuring continuous access to mobile data across multiple destinations. While they don’t offer local numbers, we love that most of their packs last for 30 days by default so you can just concentrate on how much data you need.

How it Works

The Jetpac worldwide eSIM card comes in a variety of different data packages. Data can be topped up with a number of plans ranging from 100 MB up to a slammin’ 25 GB ! The prices of data top-ups are:

  • 1 GB – $1
  • 3 GB – $10
  • 5 GB – $25
  • 10 GB – $30
  • 25 GB – $38

Absolutely. I mean, come on it starts at one-freaking-dollar and works all over the world. All in all we’d consider this one of the best pre paid international data only sim cards on the market.

#2 A Simple Data SIM Card for Worldwide Travel – Surfroam

Surfroam

Yay! No prepaid data packages, no contractual mumbo-jumbo, no running out of data right when you settle in for a long Netflix and poop session: Surfroam keeps it Pura Vida!

It’s data-only with coverage of 200+ countries – even Afghanistan and Yemen are covered! So, what’s the go?

Essentially, you pay €45 for the physical SIM card (which includes €25 credit) and then top-up as you go with pack options starting at €25 . You’re charged a pay-as-you-go rate per megabyte starting as low as €0.01/MB . So that’s way cheaper than the KeepGo data roaming sim card, right? Not quite…

Rates vary substantially by country so while this going to be a cheaper option across, say, Europe, it may not necessarily pan out that way in other places. That said, prices are still pretty cheap for most places and tend to beat out KeepGo.

As a final note, there is an eSIM (€30) available with the same data rates.

Ok, so ‘simple’ might be stretching it upon reflection, however, once you’re away, its streams ablaze! If you’re jet-setting and changing countries a lot, you will need to stay keyed in as to the rates .

Otherwise, the coverage significantly beats out KeepGo, and in many cases, Surfroam will end up being the cheapest international data SIM card you can purchase. It’s the simplest choice for staying connected pretty much anywhere in the world.

#3 The Best International SIM Card for Europe – Orange Holiday Europe

Orange Holiday Zen/Europe

Are you just doing a little banger holiday in Europe and need a physical SIM card for your travels? Orange has got you covered. Specifically:

  • Orange Holiday Europe SIM Card
  • Orange Holiday Zen SIM Card

The Orange Holiday Zen is for light usage or a short trip. It’s a straight prepaid SIM card for travellers in Europe and it couldn’t be simpler.

For $27.29 , you get 8 GB of data, 30 minutes of calls worldwide, 200 texts, all lasting for 14 days before it expires. The Holiday Zen covers 30 countries in Europe including all the heavy-hitters, if you need a sim in Italy , Greece or Spain it’s perfect but it certainly doesn’t cover all of Europe (my boy Serbia – forever underrepresented). Still, this makes it one of the best European SIM Cards for travellers.

The Orange Holiday Europe takes all of that and just upgrades it: 20 GB in data, 120 minutes, and 1000 texts for $44 . The same coverage of countries applies and it’s a 14-day expiry again.

Orange also partners with a bunch of networks around the world- even offering an Israeli sim card called partner. If you take a look around their website, you can find more far-flung networks than you expected!

Both cards are able to be topped up online for more credit.

Yeah, so I wouldn’t call ‘30 countries in Europe’ an internationally roaming SIM card, but it is a super simple choice for anyone just travelling to Europe for a holiday. It’ll keep you safe in an emergency thanks to that fact that it’s not a data only service. Plus: you’ll have a SIM ready from the moment you land!

Orange is a pretty major sim provider in France so you’ll have a consistent connection. There’s no constant checking of rates calculators either. It’s just a perfectly simple prepaid SIM card for any travellers heading to Europe.

Y’all want more? Another option to look at is getting an Airalo eSim instead.

will hatton working with a business partner

That depends on how you travel. If you’re adept at buying prepaid SIM cards locally when you hit the ground, then I wouldn’t worry.

However, for the people that an international SIM card suits the travelling style and needs of, then yes, definitely. I think if you’re that person, then you probably already know that you’re that person.

People looking for the all-round ol’ reliable, OneSim is the go-to choice of travel SIM cards. For those who want the best data SIM card they can use overseas, that choice is KeepGo .

Skip the lines and skip the painful errand days in a foreign city. Buy one of the best international SIM cards you can and have yourself connected before you even touchdown on the landing.

Want another kind of sim card? Check out the revolutionary new Nomad e-sim , an app-based sim card covering over 100 countries that can be organised before you leave home! If that’s not enough, there’s another new service from HolaFly which offers similar coverage and deals so check them both out and see which fits your needs best.

I think eSIMS are the future gamechanger here. You can download a digital SIM to your phone which has eSIM support.

I use a second phone to provide data to my main phone via bluetooth internet sharing. Wifi sharing can be used as well but bluetooth uses less power. On my main phone I leave the mobile data turned off and use the paired second phone for data. This allows me to use my main phone for Whatsapp, iMessage, email, etc.

10/10 review – exactly the type of info I was after. Plus, I liked your no BS style of writing. Thanks.

Thanks! Very useful! My main concern is regarding how long do the sim cards remain active if you are not buying credit regularly. I usually travel at least once or twice to congresses per year, but I wonder if some of these cards would stop working after a long time inactive. Is that information available for the cards discussed here? Cheers!

Heya, absolutely you can find that info! It’ll be in the terms and conditions/fine print for individual cards/plans. I’d like to say most last at least a year (which always seemed standard for SIM cards in general), but defs check that before you go buying any SIMs. Good question though!

You guys should definitely include DENT, a block chain based international E-Sim card, that offers flexibel data exchange. You can sell your unused data and always find the cheapest offer worldwide and cross boarder operational. Can’t be missed from this list!

Dude – hectic! I’m defs not about to go and update this article, but I looked and DENT seems pretty legit and totally worth the investigation. Anyone reading these comments, you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not scoping them out at least! 😀

Best sim card for UK travel (and other WiFi options for your trip)

By: Author Tracy Collins

Travel tips How to access WiFi in the UK

Travelling to the UK and wondering what the options are for connecting to the internet? Do you want to use your smartphone but avoid a huge bill when you get home? In this article, we have researched all the options so you don’t have to – read on to find out!

We have all become more and more dependent on our smartphones for just about every aspect of life. Whether it’s writing emails, using apps (we recommend downloading these 16 apps for UK travel) or getting driving directions, smartphones give us instant information at our fingertips.

So what happens when you travel to the UK?

Will your smartphone even work there?

The answer is yes, it can absolutely do all the things you need it to do, but you have to do a little research and make a plan prior to leaving.

Failure to do so could result in a nonworking smartphone on your trip, or even worse, a future bill with astronomical international roaming charges. Never fear, however, because the research has been done for you.

SIM options – quick guide

1. the first step is to understand each of the 5 available options, 2. the second step is understanding which is the best option for your needs., why you need a vpn, 2. a portable wi-fi device, 3. check with your telecommunications provider, option 1 – purchase at home before you travel, option 2 – purchase after you arrive in the uk, 5. use esim technology, choosing the right wi-fi option for you – the best sim card for uk travel, a quick overview of the options available in the united kingdom.

Most hotels in the UK have free Wi-Fi. You could also plan on using hotspots, those public locations offering free Wi-Fi, like museums , coffee shops or fast food restaurants.

2. A portable Wi-Fi device such as Skyroam Solis

You can either rent or buy one of these. They are portable, about the size of a drink coaster and very easy to use.

3. Use your mobile provider’s international plan or arrange for day passes

Call your provider to see what their options are. Some have international calling built right in, while others offer international day passes. For the day passes, be sure to make a note of the price, the limits on data and the ability to make calls and texts.

4. Buy a SIM card either before you leave or when you get to the UK

For those folks not so technically minded, a SIM card is the small card inside of your phone that stores data unique to the user and to the phone. When travelling to the UK from abroad, assume you’ll need to swap out your existing SIM card for a UK compatible SIM card.

Many new phones come eSIM enabled which means you don’t need the usual SIM card with a chip embedded in it as a reprogrammable chip is actually present within the smartphone itself. This option is only available if you have a compatible phone so you will need to check first.

A row of red phone boxes in London

Ask yourself these questions

  • How much data will you need?
  • How often and for what reason will you be using your smartphone?
  • Will you be using apps that require a lot of data?
  • Will you need to watch videos or download information for work?
  • Will you need service for multiple devices?

Perhaps you’ll only need your smartphone to occasionally check email or make a quick social media post. Maybe you’re travelling with family and plan to use smartphones to keep in touch with one another via texts and calls.

Luckily, there are options that work for all of these scenarios.

5 options to access WiFi in the UK

Let’s look at all those options in a little more detail

1. Free Wi-Fi

If your hotel offers free Wi-Fi, you could plan to use that exclusively during your trip.

This would work well for someone who doesn’t use their phone very often and is willing to take care of any smartphone needs while in their room.

Outside of the hotel, there are many free hotspots for wifi in UK attractions or public places that could also be used.

Well, it’s free. Also, connecting to it is simple and convenient.

Disadvantages

Free Wi-Fi can be slow. This may not be an issue if you’ll be using your phone infrequently, but if you plan to visit websites, use apps or download information, slow speeds could be frustrating.

Are your game-playing kids travelling with you? They may not be very pleased with this option.

While slow speed is something to consider, lax security can be a serious problem. Using free Wi-Fi in public spaces is risky. Encryption standards may not be adequate, so anyone sitting near you could gain access to your personal information.

So could hackers who know public Wi-Fi can lead them directly into your phone. Talk about a fast way to ruin your trip! This is why we use (and recommend) a VPN service like SurfShark.

A VPN or Virtual Private Network allows you to create secure connections over the internet. This is essential if you are planning to use free WiFi on your travels as it stops anyone from gaining access to your private information.

If you do choose the free Wi-Fi route, the critical thing to remember is to turn off your international roaming. Depending on your provider, failure to do so could result in staggering charges on your next bill.

Thus, the best thing to do is while in the UK is to put your smartphone into flight mode. This will ensure that you won’t receive or transmit cellular data. Don’t worry — you’ll still have access to Wi-Fi in flight mode. It’s also a great way to save battery power on your phone.

Staying in touch with family and friends will still work with apps like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp — all usable without roaming.

There are also apps that allow you to download information while you have Wi-Fi for later use. These include Google Drive, TripAdvisor and AccuWeather.

The Solis, for example, is a pocket-sized device available for rent or purchase that allows for portable wifi UK. It has 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi speeds and is easy to use via the Solis app on your smartphone.

You know exactly how much it’s going to cost upfront. You’ll either purchase a device and pay for the data you use or you can rent it and pay per day. Devices like these are also secure, unlike public Wi-Fi.

If you would like to connect your iPad and laptop, this would be a great option for you as it allows connection to multiple devices. You can also share it with others who are in close proximity to the person holding the device.

This option does not include phone calls. Also, it may not be the most cost-effective choice if you are travelling by yourself, don’t need much data and only need Wi-Fi on one device.

While this device does allow for multiple users, they all need to be in the same place, so if the family heads in separate directions, someone is going to lose their Wi-Fi.

Finally, you must remember to charge its battery.

Note – the Solis is only available to purchase in the USA at present. An alternative to consider is the TravelWiFi portable device which we recently used during our UK trip in 2022 .

⭐️ USE THE CODE TRACYS TRAVELS AT CHECKOUT FOR AN EXCLUSIVE 10% DISCOUNT

Some plans include international roaming but if they don’t, they may offer an international day pass.

For residents of the United States, Verizon offers its TravelPass for $10.00, which allows up to 500MB per day and calls within the UK or back home.

T-Mobile’s international day pass works much the same way, but it’s only $5.00 and also has the ability to make your smartphone into a mobile hotspot.

Sprint is a little different. They offer Global Roaming, which allows 25 cents-a-minute calls, free texting and unlimited basic data up to 2G. You’ll need to go to their website, however, and make sure this service will work on your device.

Some Australian providers like Telstra and Optus offer a travel pack that allows for a fixed amount of talk, text, and data for a specific amount of days. This is generally cheaper than using pay-as-you-go roaming.

It’s very easy to call your provider or to use their apps to arrange these services. It’s also a good, secure and reliable method for someone who doesn’t plan on using large amounts of data.

With certain providers, there is a data limit per 24-hour period. If you go over, it can be very expensive. The limited data makes this a poor option for someone planning to use their smartphone for everything while travelling.

4. Purchase a UK Prepaid SIM Card

You can buy a prepaid SIM card online and have it shipped to you before your trip even begins.

Here are the three best options for a UK SIM card for visitors that are available for pre-purchase.

  • Orange Holiday Zen

This card comes with 8GB of data. You’ll get 30 minutes of calling and 200 minutes of SMS use.

Once you begin using your SIM card, it is good for 14 days. The Orange Holiday Zen might be the ideal choice for someone who won’t use their phone very often during their trip.

For more data, upgrade to the Orange Holiday Europe . You get 20GB of data, 120 minutes of calls worldwide and 1,000 SMS messages. This also lasts for a fortnight after activation.

  • 3 Data Pack 8GB

This card also offers 8GB. Unlike the Orange Holiday SIM range, it offers unlimited calls and SMS use within Europe. It works for 30 days after you begin using it.

This card can be used in 71 Go Roam countries worldwide, including some outside of Europe such as Australia and the US. It gives you a UK phone number, and works with any unlocked device. Receiving messages and calls is free with this SIM card.

For more data or a longer duration, you can also buy the 3 PAYG 12GB card that’s valid for a year, or the 24GB option that lasts for two years after activation. Both also work in 71 Go Roam countries.

This is our third choice as it’s more basic, but the price tag does match that. It covers all European countries and gives you 10GB of data.

Once activated, it’s good for 30 days of use, so longer than the Orange SIM cards.

The primary advantage is that you can begin using your smartphone as soon as your plane lands in the UK.

Swapping your SIM card ahead of time will give you peace of mind in knowing that all of your data, text and call needs have been taken care of. You will also be guaranteed fast, consistent data speeds throughout your trip.

Once the new SIM card is inside your smartphone, you won’t be able to use it until you get to the UK. If you have multiple phones, this may work for you. If not, it could be a problem.

You also won’t know if the new SIM card has been properly installed and is working until you get to the UK.

A person holding a selection of the best UK sim card for visitors

Some people may choose to wait until arriving in the country to buy a UK prepaid SIM card. If you don’t mind paying a little more, you can pick one up at the airport as soon as you get off the plane.

You can also find them more reasonably priced at a provider’s store. There are four main providers of UK SIM cards for tourists. Their stores can be found throughout the country.

As long as your phone can be unlocked, they will install it for you without requiring you to show identification or your passport, which had been a past requirement.

SIM cards are also available at convenience stores, grocery stores and tobacconists.

A phone with a sim card next to it one option when choosing the best UK sim card for visitors

Here are the four main providers who offer a UK prepaid SIM card for tourists.

EE is one of the largest internet service providers and mobile network operators in the UK. They offer several pay-as-you-go packages at different price points depending on the amount of data and call minutes you need.

They are the UK branch of Telefonica which is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world. They offer 5 types of SIM cards for UK tourists, varying in available data and minutes.

Their name reflects that they were the first telecommunication company to offer a 3G connection to their customers.

They have six different UK tourist SIM cards, all offering unlimited minutes and texts. The only difference is in the amount of data and, of course, the price.

They also offer a variety of prepaid SIM cards, so again, which one you get would depend on how you plan to use your smartphone. They have a variety of SIM-only deals and pay-as-you-go SIM plans that are ideal for travellers.

There are many options for data or calling with these cards, so you could tailor your purchase to your exact needs. Getting your SIM changed when you arrive will allow for a consistent and fast data speed throughout your stay in the UK.

You may need to unlock your phone. In order to do that you would have to visit one of the providers’ stores. This could potentially cost you time and is probably not how you want to spend your precious vacation minutes.

Also, some smartphones will not unlock if you have had them for less than 12 months, so you would need to contact your provider before you travel to make sure this wouldn’t be an issue.

A picture of a phone and a sim card

If you’re not familiar with this yet, then you’re far from alone! An eSIM may already actually be there within your phone, though you’d be forgiven for not knowing it.

eSim is an entirely online system, so you don’t need the usual SIM card with a chip embedded in it. Set-up is fast, it’s simple to use and it’s all done online.

Many of the latest smartphones are already eSIM enabled. This especially applies to the top selling brands like Apple, Google and Samsung. For example, compatible devices include the Apple iPhone 11, the Google Pixel 3 and the Samsung Galaxy S20, plus all subsequent models in each range.

With an eSIM, a reprogrammable chip is actually present within the smartphone itself. Before using an eSIM, all you normally need to do is scan a QR code to begin the download. It’s a quick and convenient way to get a SIM without a physical card.

You can find the right eSIM for your UK trip at airalo.com . Prices start at just $5, and the eSim lasts for anything from a week upwards.

An eSIM costs from just USD $5, so it’s a very affordable way to stay connected and in touch with your loved ones.

As it’s solely online, eSIMs are far more eco-friendly than traditional SIM cards. You don’t need to wait for a new SIM to be delivered either.

You can switch to any mobile network more or less instantly too. Sometimes, you can also use a SIM card in your phone at the same time. This means you can use each for different purposes – such as work and leisure.

eSIMS are still relatively new, and not offered by all phone networks. You usually need a contract, rather than a Pay As You Go plan, to use this technology via your usual phone network.

Not all smartphones are compatible with eSIM technology. If you have a phone that’s more than a couple of years old, or is made by certain brands, then you may not be able to use an eSIM.

So that’s basically all there is to mastering the art of picking which smartphone Wi-Fi option is right for you while travelling in the UK . Whew!

It’s really not such a complicated puzzle when all the information is laid out. You know how you will use your smartphone and how much data you will need, so just pick the option that works best for you. Then enjoy a surprise-free trip to the UK!

I bought a LycaMobile SIM from a Tesco Express, bought a £15 digital top-up from a convenience store in the Edinburgh airport (WH Smith), and chose a plan that was £12 for 25GB for 30 days (and included some minutes/texts). I was unable to buy a top-up online because it wanted a UK postal code for the billing address. I was also unable to activate the £15 plan; when I activated the £12 plan, I noticed that it deducted £12.06 from my balance for some reason, so top up with slightly more than the listed plan cost. It comes with free EU roaming (through 2022) - it's worked in Scotland and Sweden so far, but not in Brussels (only tried it at the airport, didn't have time to try manually setting the APN).

Thanks Brian for sharing your experience!

One of the most popular destinations to visit anywhere in the world is the United Kingdom. And whether you’re planning a city break in London , explore rural Scotland or anything in between, it’s undeniable that finding the best prepaid SIM card for tourists to the UK will make your time in Britain easier to navigate.

Even if you’re planning to combine your trip in the UK with Ireland or many other countries in continental Europe, you’ll still be able to use any of these prepaid SIM cards in many other countries.

So if you’re wondering what the best UK sim card for visitors is and how to best buy them, check out our guide below to ensure you can easily stay connected while in the UK!

Want a quick answer? My choice for the best UK SIM card that can be purchased online is the  Orange Prepaid SIM with 30GB Data (eSIM available)  or the  Three Prepaid SIM with 12GB data

Prepaid SIM Card for UK Visitors Comparison

How to purchase a travel sim card for the uk.

If you’re used to buying SIM cards in the USA , you might be pleasantly surprised to know that you can actually buy a local SIM card in many arrival ports of the UK such as Heathrow or Gatwick Airport. However, while this might seem like a convenient option, there are a few disadvantages to taking this approach.

The first and perhaps most obvious one is that if you’re coming to the UK after a long flight, you probably prefer to get as quickly as possible to wherever you’re staying, rather than dealing with shopping for SIM card for the UK.

Secondly, a lot of the SIM cards sold at airports often are marked up meaning you are paying more than you should. And if you’re only travelling in the UK for a short period of time, you probably don’t want to waste your precious time going to the various telecom shops.

Finally, it’s undoubtedly more convenient to be able to connect to data as soon as you land in the UK either to be able to order a cheaper taxi through an app or simply to let your family back home know that you’ve arrived!

With a plethora of great UK prepaid sim cards available online, I personally suggest travellers pre-order one a few weeks before they’re due to leave, pop it into their phone and know that they’ll have data as soon as they land in the UK!

If you prefer to pick one up when landing in the UK and are prepared to pay an inflated price, then you can head to shops like WH Smith and Sim Local or look for vending machines that exist in some airports.

Will a UK SIM Card Work in my Phone?

Before you travel to the UK and buy a SIM card, you want to make sure that your mobile phone is unlocked completely and will work with a different carrier to what you use back home.

If you have bought your mobile phone on a contract plan, you should call your provider at home and check to see if your phone can be unlocked. If you’re not under contract, your phone might still be locked but the provider should unlock it for free.

Be aware that your mobile phone provider might try to upsell you an expensive roaming package — this is undoubtedly the most costly option for travellers heading abroad. If, for whatever reason, you can’t get your phone unlocked, a cheaper option might be to purchase a mobile WiFi hotspot or an unlocked phone online.

Alternatively, you can always rely on public WiFI in cafes and your accommodation, however, this isn’t always ideal for a short trip! If you choose to go down this route, then make sure to subscribe to a quality VPN such as ExpressVPN .

Best SIM Cards for UK Tourists

These are some of the best UK SIM cards for travellers that can be purchased online and allow you to have data as soon as you land!

Three Prepaid SIM with 12GB Data

Whether you’re travelling only in the UK or looking for a SIM card for all of Europe , the Three Prepaid SIM with 12GB Data is undoubtedly one of the best deals available for travellers.

This SIM card comes with 12GB data, 3000 minutes of calls and 3000 texts which can be used for 30 days across a total of 71 countries including the EU countries and even in the US, Canada & Australia!

If you’re travelling for more than 30 days you have the option of recharging your phone, or alternatively, you can consider purchasing a Three SIM Card with 1-year validity here . The only difference to be aware of with these SIM cards is that they don’t include phone calls or SMS credits.

Some things to be aware of with this Three SIM is that you can only use calls or texts for other UK and other European numbers and it’s not possible to use this SIM card as a mobile hotspot.

PrePaid Europe (UK THREE) sim card 12GB data+3000 minutes+3000 texts for 30 days with FREE ROAMING / USE in 71 destinations including all European countries

Orange Prepaid SIM Card with 30GB Data

If the disadvantages of the Three Prepaid SIM card make it not a suitable option for your needs, you’ll be happy to know that the Orange Prepaid SIM card might be the perfect choice for you. It is available as a physical SIM card or an eSIM.

Coming with a whopping 30GB of data it also includes 120 minutes of phone calls and 1000 SMS that can be used to call or message any number around the world.

It also has no restrictions in terms of being able to use the SIM card as a hotspot so you have the guarantee of a reliable internet connection for your laptop!

This SIM card only has 14 days of validity however you can easily recharge online so it’s ideal for heavy data users that will probably be using this SIM card as a hotspot during their travels.

It also has a smaller country list than the Three Prepaid SIM card, as it only works in 30 countries however they do still cover all the major European destinations.

All in all, the Orange SIM card is a fantastic option for a UK sim card for visitors who need a large data allowance and the ability to make some short phone calls back home!

best sim card for europe with data

O2 Prepaid SIM Card with Unlimited Data

Another good option for travellers looking for a UK prepaid SIM card is the O2 SIM Card .

This SIM card gives you unlimited data in the UK, however, it doesn’t include any roaming options for Europe so it’s not a great option if you plan on country-hopping.

It also doesn’t include any calls or texts so it’s really designed for people that want a lot of data in the UK only.

The credit is valid for 30 days and it is possible to recharge this SIM card. You can also use it as a mobile hotspot, unlike the Three Prepaid SIM card.

Overall, the O2 SIM Card is a great SIM card choice if you’re planning to primarily stay in the UK and don’t need any calls or texts.

$45 Sims4Travel Prepaid O2 UNLIMITED Data Plan. Unlimited 5G Data for use in the UK (Valid for 30 Days from Activation). Easy to Renew. (3-in-1 SIM Card). Stay connected whilst in the UK.

Giffgaff Prepaid SIM Card with 20GB Data

If you want to have flexibility on your trip to the UK when it comes to your data allowance then the Giffgaff SIM with 20GB data is a great option.

This SIM card allows you to purchase 20GB of data with the lowest tier option but you also have options to buy larger data plans which have 35GB or 100GB of data.

This SIM card utilises the O2 network and also includes unlimited calls and texts across the UK. You are also able to use 5GB for data roaming in the EU. There is also the option to pay extra if you would like to call or text the USA.

The Giffgaff SIM card is rechargeable and remains active for up to six months of no usage so is a good option if you plan to do multiple trips to the UK and don’t want to always be buying a new SIM card for every trip.

GiffGaff United Kingdom PAYG SIM Card for Visiting UK & Europe w/ 5£Bonus, Activate While in U.S., 12£ for Unlimited SMS/Calls and 12GB Data [for Unlocked Phones]

Cellhire Prepaid SIM Card with 12GB Data

If you’re simply looking for a throwaway SIM Card to use for a one-off trip to the UK & possibly Europe then the Cellhire SIM Card with 12GB data might be a good option for you.

This SIM card doesn’t come with any calls or texts included and isn’t rechargeable which means it’s most suitable for travellers looking for a basic data SIM card.

You can activate it in Europe rather than the UK so it’s ideal if you’re first stop is outside of the United Kingdom.

The Cellhire SIM Card can be purchased with different data limits and has an expiry of 60 days.

It can also be used as a hotspot making it great if you want to share data with friends across devices for a long period of time. In other words, this might be a great option for long-term backpackers in Europe!

If you’re a visitor looking for a travel SIM card for the UK, then you’ll be happy to know that there are a number of great options that can be purchased online to ensure you have internet access as soon as you land!

Hi Micheal, I am a visitor in Uk and will stay there for 3 weeks.I need just internet data service on my phone as I am planning to use it for just navigation or texting / calling via whatasapp whenever I am out .I will arrive in Heathrow. As far as I check it seems that there is no good deal for me at the airport.I need a simcard that can be bought and activated right there .I checked O2 deals ,but not sure any option would be there that can be bought right in place in any O2 stores or any other service providers that meets my requirement.what is your recommendation? Thanks in advance.

Hello Michael, Flying in from Austria (EU) we do not have the free roaming option between EU to GB and vice versa anymore due to Brexit . I’m going to London only for a five-day stay arriving in Stansted . I have a Samsung mobile A52 with Dual SIM and need a prepaid SIMcard only for roaming from London to EU with 4 to 5 GB data . What is your recommendation , Thanks

Hi Andy, The Orange or Three SIM would be my choice.

Hello Michael! I’ll be traveling to both UK and Greece for a total stay of 10 days, and would like to know which SIM card would suit my travel plans considering that I am arriving in UK first. I mainly need the internet data service as am planning to use both FaceTime and iMessage as my main means of communication. Thank you in advance!

Good evening Michael, I will be travelling thru Scotland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Wales and England on self drive holiday mid next year. I am hoping to use Apple maps as a navigation tool in our hire car and am looking for a SIM only arrangement that provides enough data for 42 days touring (est. 20GB) and allows some text and call time. Any suggestions, as it seems nothing available currently achieves my requirements. Thanks Steve

Hi Stephen, I would suggest choosing a SIM card that you can recharge.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the info. Do you know average price of sims purchased locally? Since I’m travelling to Scotland next week I don’t think I’ll be able to order sim online.

Thanks, Hadas

Hi Hadas, It will depend entirely on how much data/credit you’ll want for your trip.

Hi Michael, I’ll be traveling through out Scotland and a portion of England, then to Republic of Ireland over the course of about 25 days. Is there one sim card that will work in both areas?

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike, All the listed SIMs should work in both the UK and Ireland.

Hi Michael, I’m planning on being in the UK for 50 days. I notice most SIM cards are for 30 days or less. Do I need to purchase 2 sim cards? Thanks, Kevin

Hi Kevin, Several of the SIM cards listed in this article are rechargeable.

I will be in UK only for 32 days and spend much my time in rural West Somerset, Wales, and Cornwall.

Hi Michael!

Do you know which would work best in the Scottish Highlands?

Thank you in advance and Happy New Year.

The Orange SIM is a good option if travelling in more rural areas.

which sim card, and how to use?

i've just gotten my first smart phone before an upcoming month long trip to scotland. i have AT&T, which does not have international use. But my phone is unlocked, so I've been told I can get a sim card to switch out and use for that month, when i get there. Can I purchase this at the Edinburgh airport? We'll be going from Edinburgh, to Glen Coe, and Skye and Mull and Ullapool and Inverness and Lewis/Harris. are there different sim cards to purchase and if so, which should i go with for the best chance to have good coverage in all those areas? once i put the new sim card in, will it be fairly self-explanatory as to how to make UK calls once I put it in? I am very ignorant. (I will make sure I have the little tool for switching out the sims).

Yes, you can get a SIM card at the airport. The people at the store can give you information about which card might work best for you, both as far as coverage and the other things you need (data, calling, etc.).. You don't want to keep switching SIMs, though. Every time you switch SIMs you also switch phone numbers, and there is no reason to do it. What might work best for you is a pay-as-you-go card that you can add time to as you need it. The people at the store can also show you how to make local calls, and dial back to the US if you need to.

nancy - thank you. so is that a pay as you go sim card? and it will give me a different phone number than the one that i have with AT&T - that makes sense. so the pay as you go card has its own phone number? i am supposed to give all the places we are staying, a contact phone number. i guess giving them the phone number i have now won't be any use.

jbsamwise, Correct. The SIM card is equivalent to the the socket you plug your home phone into. It decides who bills you for the calls and what your phone number is. New SIM card = new phone number, put back your old SIM card and you get your old phone number again. Any SIM card you buy in the UK will have a UK phone number. So you dial a UK number same as from a landline, for example 01234 678901. And you dial a foreign number: 00{country code}{area code}{number}. For example, for the US: 001aaannnnnnn. There are some phones that can take two SIM cards, but that is getting complicated.

If you're going to be in Edinburgh for a few days, you'll have a greater range of choice in accessing cell shops there. The staff at your hotel can provide information on the nearest one. It would be a good idea to verify that the phone is indeed unlocked, as it won't work with other SIM cards unless it is.

The staff at the cell phone shop will be able to provide some information on how to use the phone. You'll likely have several different plans to choose from, so you'll have to give some thought on how much you'll be using voice, text or data. You'll also need to be clear on the method for "topping up" the card when your time is depleted.

This chart may help with the method for making calls in Europe.....

https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/phones-tech/call-uk-europe

i am sure it's an unlocked phone, as i have a pay as you go sort of set up with AT&T, and he said that that makes it an unlocked phone. that if i had any other kind of plan, it would be locked into AT&T. we will only have the day we arrive, a full day after that, then leave at check out time for the highlands. so not much time for going to the edinburgh phone stores. better just buy one at the airport. (on the other end of our trip we will have more time in edinburgh). Thank you for the information on how to make the calls. will make sure i have that with me.

back from an absolutely incredible month in scotland. thank you to everyone. i ended up putting an 02 sim card in for the month and it worked well. there were occasional areas where it wouldn't work, but nothing that caused us difficulty, and those were areas that I would imagine no other card/phone would have worked either. again, a thank you to everyone for helping me to understand and use the sim card!

I looked at the list of shops located in Edinburgh Airport, but none seemed likely to carry SIM cards. I realize there are some Car Warehouses a few miles from the airport, but for a host of reasons, I really need to get the SIM cards for all of our phones at the airport. Is there a specific store or kiosk in EDI that sells them?

I have never been to EDI, but I expect that the WH Smith (one each before and after security) would have some PAYG SIM cards near the tills.

Thanks for the update!

My daughter who recently finished her studies in Edinburgh, purchased & used the O2 sim card for her unlocked iphone, but most of her friends had the "Three Co" Sim card: http://www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM

Sim options esim review (2024)- tried and tested.

Cazzy Magennis

The eSIM market has exploded and there are so many options available.

Since we travel quite frequently, I’ve made it my mission to test and try as many eSIMS as possible, and recently I’ve been testing an eSIM from the provider “ SimOptions ”. I’m going to take you through my thoughts on the eSIM itself, and the company SimOptions, because they’re a little different from most eSIM companies (in a good way!)

So let’s get started…

Travellerspoint

A little overview on SimOptions

travel sim card scotland

So before I delve into all the ins and outs of eSIMS and what services SimOptions provides, I want to begin by telling you one of the great USPs the company offers!

SimOptions is like the comparison website for eSIMS, (Like the Kayak of the eSIM world!) so if you’ve been thinking to yourself “There’s too many eSIMS, I don’t know who to choose” , then this is the website you need!

What is an eSIM?

In case you're not fully informed, an eSIM functions as a virtual SIM card.

Instead of relying on a physical SIM card every time you switch countries, you basically use an eSIM.

Instead of physically inserting a SIM card into your phone's tray, you activate an eSIM by scanning a QR code or inputting a number manually, depending on your phone and eSIM provider.

Additionally, you have the option to add multiple eSIMs if desired, which is super useful if you want to switch between your home network (for receiving texts) and your eSIM for data.

When it comes to advantages and disadvantages of eSIMS, there are many more advantages than disadvantages, so let’s go through some of them.

Advantages of eSIMS

1. No More Sim Card Scavenger Hunts: Say goodbye to the hassle of hunting down local SIM cards every time you set foot in a new country! (Trust me, I despised this frantic search during our travels across various countries, especially when we were doing a few countries in a short period!) ‍

2. Clumsy-proof: Perfect for folks like me who tend to be a tad clumsy! (there’s a reason my sister calls me Bambi). With an eSIM, there's no risk of misplacing it. ‍

3. Eco-Friendly: Go green with digital eSIMs, no physical product is needed, so better for the environment ‍

4. Budget-friendly: Say goodbye to overspending woes! With eSIMs, you pre-pay, ensuring no surprises or unnecessary charges sneak up on you. (I've been "accidently charged many times- one time over £200 for having my data on in India by accident for like 10 minutes....I cried hahah)

Disadvantages of an eSIM

One of the only disadvantages is that you don’t *always* have access to a local mobile number.

However, this is changing, and I know with plans such as O2, and Orange (both of which you will find on the SimOptions platform ), they provide you with a number where you can receive texts and make calls!

But even if you opt for an eSIM that does not include a local number, don’t worry, you can always make phones via WhatsApp, which we always find is the best way to communicate when abroad anyway!

As I mentioned at the beginning, with eSIMS you can also dual sim.

This means you can switch to your normal phone sim when you want to make a phonecall, and switch to your eSIM for data.

On my phone, I always have my calls and texts set to my default sim, and my eSIM is always set as my data (so I’m never at risk of unnecessary charges!)

What phones are compatible with a SimOptions eSIM?

As of 2024, this is the current list of eSIM-supported devices:

What makes SimOptions so unique?

So, Sim Options is a website marketplace that allows you to search and compare eSIMS for over 200 different countries.

They offer their own eSIM plans, but they also show eSIMs from other providers.

This means you can get a clear overview of what’s the best option.

For example, if I search for Iceland:

travel sim card scotland

Not only do they show me a list of providers available for Iceland, but they also provide me with all the extra information I may need, in a very concise manner.

For example, if I want to know how many countries an eSIM covers, for example here, I can see that the o2 package is likely a Europe sim, because it includes 37 countries, compared to the Sim Options one, which specifically does Iceland.

travel sim card scotland

I can also see what speeds the eSIM uses, whether it include a number and much more.

This is brilliant in a world where there are SO many eSIMS on offer, because it can become overwhelming, and Sim Options gives you a place where you can sort through that data and make an informed decision! I love it!

Advantages of SimOptions

1. over 200 countries on offer.

This is important because not all eSIM providers cover a lot of countries. A few of the eSIMS I’ve used in the past have included only 50, or some only 100 countries. But if you travel frequently, or you’re on a big backpacking adventure, then the fact that you have the opportunity of internet coverage in this many countries, is a big advantage.

Sim Options cover Europe, North America, South America, the Caribbean, Asia, South East Asia, Oceania, the Middle East and Africa.

So you’ll pretty much be sorted for wherever you go!

3. Regional eSIMS are available

If you’re backpacking through Asia or South America, or interrailing through Europe , then you’re going to be passing through a variety of countries in a relatively shorter period.

That’s when having a regional eSIM is super flexible and makes your life much easier.

SimOptions cover Europe, North America, South America, the Caribbean, Asia, South East Asia, Oceania, the Middle East and Africa.

They also offer great deals, for example for Europe, you get coverage in 32 European countries for 15 days, at $14.90 for 5GB!

Or you can get a whopping 50GB for less than $70 for 60 days (perfect for those interrailing trips around Europe!)

Sim Card Europe

4. No Contract Commitments

SimOptions offer SIM cards and plans without requiring you to sign long-term contracts, or even be bogged down to an eSIM for a year (I’ve seen this on other eSIM providers).

This is perfect if you need flexibility and want to avoid being tied down to a specific provider or plan for an extended period.

Disadvantages of SimOptions

No unlimited data package from their own plans.

This is technically only a disadvantage if you were seeking out unlimited data.

Unlimited data always sounds great on the forefront but 99.9% of cases, your data is slooooowwwweeeddd right down after about 3-5GB daily, depending on what provider and plan you've went for.

This is a problem if you've got your eSIM for hotspotting. But basically, what I'm trying to say is, decide what you're going to using your eSIM for and that will dictate how much data you need. If you need it for social media and google maps ect, then you'll be surprised at how far just 1GB will go!

travel sim card scotland

Do note that for apps such as YouTube, Netflix and Amazon prime, you can stream is lower quality to limit internet usage. It's typically easy to adjust these features in the settings areas of your apps! Some apps will default to lower quality (such as my amazon does it naturally when it sees I am running on data), but this may not be the case for everyone, so it's best to double check!

It is worth noting that on some options, such as a Thailand eSIM, unlimited data is available through another provider, so it will be dependent on the country and provider!

How to set up a SimOptions eSIM

It’s simple!

  • Step 1: Head on over to the website and choose your plan, then pay!
  • You will receive a QR code. Send or share this code to another device, such as your friend/partners phone (you will need to do this on a stable WIFI network or a strong data connection)
  • Step 3: scan the QR code and follow the instructions on your mobile device. With my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, it simply asks me do I want to add the eSIM, I select “yes”, rename it to Sim Options eSIM, then switch my data over to that eSIM and we are in business!

travel sim card scotland

There are manual ways to add your eSIM, and it will explain to you how to do this the email you have received with your eSIM. However, most modern phones will add your eSIM automatically.

Psssst, sometimes you may need to restart your phone if the data isn't showing automatically after a few minutes!

SIM OPTIONS ESIM: Tested in Iceland

I’ve been testing my Sim options eSIM across Iceland. I’m spending a month traveling the entire country, and so far I’ve been using it in North and East Iceland. My home SIM has been using the “Siminn” network, and my eSIM from Sim Options has been using Vodafone.

I’ve found this extremely useful in the northern parts of Iceland, where the internet can be remote in certain areas.

Overall the setup was easy and quick, it took about 2 minutes for my phone to set up the eSIM, and I simply reset my phone and my new eSIM was working perfectly!

I’ve had no issues with speed or coverage so far, so overall I am extremely happy with the eSIM and the price! It’s $14 for 5GB of data in Iceland, which has a duration of 30 days, and this is a perfect amount for using Google Maps to get from A to B, research restaurants, book hot springs, and much more!

I've only needed this eSIM for my mobile phone use, i.e Google maps, and YouTube music to keep the road trip tunes flowing, and the speed has been perfectly fine! I have not used the device for hotspotting, simply because I'm staying in hotels every evening!

OVERALL VERDICT: Is a SIMOPTIONS eSIM worth it?

Absolutely. With an excellent price point, ease of use, and great coverage, I’m very pleased with the eSIM by sim options. I simply love that they are also a marketplace for eSIMS in general, so I can compare the best eSIMS for any destination and know I’m getting exactly what I need for my trip!

So there you have it, my SimOptions eSIM review! I hope this post has helped you make a choice as to whether this is the eSIM for you!

What's Cheaper To Use When Traveling: A Local SIM Card or an International Phone Plan?

F or many people, being able to stay connected with family and friends while traveling abroad is crucial. One common dilemma faced by travelers is whether to use their phone's international data plan or purchase a local SIM card abroad. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, and understanding them can help you make an informed decision based on your specific needs.

As one Redditor shares , "I was planning on using the Verizon international plan, which was something like $15 a day. When I arrived, my phone crashed."

The user then resorted to buying a local SIM card, which worked just as well and cost less money. "I was there for 10 days and the phone and SIM card ended up being much cheaper than the plan would have been," writes the user, adding, "Local sim cards are cheap, they work well, and they may even work better than your international plan."

Let's explore the pros and cons of each option to determine whether SIM cards or international phone plans reign supreme.

Power Up: 8 Tips and Tricks To Maximize Your Cellphone’s Battery Life

Pros of Using Your Phone's International Data Plan:

  • Convenience:  Utilizing your phone's international data plan allows you to continue using your own phone number and avoid the hassle of purchasing and inserting a new SIM card. This can be particularly useful for short trips or frequent travelers who prefer a seamless transition.
  • Pre-Activated Service:  International data plans are often pre-activated by your service provider, or are automatically activated once you make a phone call or use text messaging abroad. This allows you to use your phone's data as soon as you arrive at your destination and eliminates the need for any additional setup or configuration.
  • Familiarity:  By using your existing data plan, you can retain access to your contacts, apps, emails, and other personalized settings. This added convenience can be comforting and help you save time, especially if you rely heavily on specific applications and services.

What about the cons?

  • Cost : International data and roaming plans can be expensive. The charges can quickly add up, especially if you frequently use data-intensive services such as streaming, video calls, or online gaming. It's essential to review the pricing details and potential data limitations before choosing this option to ensure you're not slapped with a ridiculous bill upon your return.
  • Data Limitations:  Many international data plans come with data limits or reduced speeds after a certain usage threshold is reached. If you're a heavy data user or need to use your phone as a GPS, you might find yourself with restricted access or additional charges, which could impact your overall experience.

Pros of Using a Local SIM Card:

  • Cost-Efficient:  Buying a local SIM card can often be more cost-effective, especially for longer trips or extended stays. Local plans usually offer better rates and larger data allowances, enabling you to use data-intensive services without having to worry about going over your data limit and getting slapped with hefty fees.
  • Unrestricted Access:  With a local SIM card, you have access to local networks, which often provide faster and more reliable internet connections compared to international roaming services. This can significantly enhance your browsing experience and allow for seamless communication.
  • Flexibility:  By using a local SIM card, you have the flexibility to choose from various prepaid plans based on your specific needs. You can tailor your plan to prioritize data, voice calls, or text messages, depending on your requirements, needs, and preferences.

What About the Cons?

  • Inconvenience : Purchasing and activating a local SIM card can be time-consuming, especially if you're unfamiliar with the local language or the process involved. Additionally, a new SIM card means you may have a new temporary phone number (though some carriers will allow you to keep the same number), which can create complications if you need to use your existing phone number for personal or business purposes.
  • Compatibility:  Not all phones are compatible with local SIM cards due to network restrictions or hardware limitations. It's important to ensure that your phone is unlocked (or jailbroken) and supports the local networks before considering this option.
  • Loss of Familiar Services:  Switching to a local SIM card means you may temporarily lose access to certain services that may be tied to your existing number or provider. This could include voicemail, banking apps, or two-factor authentication systems, requiring you to make alternative arrangements before or during your travels.

If, after weighing the pros and cons, you decide you'd like to go with the local SIM card option, there are typically several places where you can buy one while abroad, including:

  • Airport Kiosks or Stores:  Many international airports have kiosks or stores operated by local mobile service providers. These outlets specialize in catering to travelers and often offer SIM cards with various data and call packages. While convenient, keep in mind that prices at airports may be slightly higher compared to other locations.
  • Mobile Network Stores: Look for stores or authorized retailers of local mobile network operators in the city or town you're visiting. These stores typically offer a wide range of SIM card options, prepaid plans, and top-up services. They can also provide assistance with selecting the most suitable plan for your needs, helping you switch your SIM card out, and ensure your phone will be compatible with it.
  • Convenience Stores and Supermarkets:  In some countries, you may find SIM cards available for purchase at convenience stores, supermarkets, or electronics stores. These establishments will often also have dedicated sections or counters for mobile services, including SIM cards and prepaid plans.
  • Resellers or Third-Party Vendors:  You may come across mobile resellers or independent vendors who specialize in selling SIM cards for multiple network operators. These can be found in popular tourist areas, markets, or shopping districts. Be sure to exercise caution with these types of vendors and ensure their legitimacy by verifying that the SIM cards they sell are authorized by the respective mobile operators.

The Bottom Line

The decision of whether it's better to upgrade your cellphone's plan to include international travel or purchase a local SIM card will depend on the individual traveler's specific needs, the duration of their travel, and where they're traveling to.

If convenience is a priority, an international data plan may be the better option. However, for cost-conscious individuals looking for flexibility and better connectivity, a local SIM card can provide a more affordable option.

The Best Iceland SIM Card in 2024

The Best Iceland SIM Card in 2024

I just got back from an epic trip to Iceland, where I spent two weeks driving the famous Ring Road and exploring the incredible landscapes. As always when I travel, staying connected was a top priority so I could share photos and videos, use maps to navigate, and look up info on the go.

But as a digital nomad visiting  Iceland  for the first time, I wasn’t sure what to expect when it came to getting a local SIM card. Iceland can be remote in places with not great cell reception, so I wanted to make sure I got the right SIM card with strong 4G/5G coverage around the country.

After lots of research before my trip, I discovered which provider has the best mobile network in Iceland. I also found some sweet deals on prepaid and eSIM cards for Iceland that made staying connected super affordable.

So if you’re planning a trip to Iceland in 2024 and need a SIM card, look no further! This in-depth guide covers everything you need to know, from the best places to buy a SIM card in Iceland to how much data and minutes you’ll get with top providers like Siminn, Vodafone and Nova.

Let’s dive in…

Will My Phone Work in Iceland?

Before getting a local SIM card in Iceland, it’s important to check if your phone will work there. Iceland uses GSM networks, which are standard throughout Europe and in most countries globally.

Here are a few ways to check if your phone is compatible:

  • Does your phone have a SIM card slot?  If yes, it is likely GSM-compatible and will work in Iceland. Most modern smartphones have SIM card slots.
  • Which country did you buy your phone?  If you purchased your phone in the US, Canada, or another country that uses CDMA networks, it may not work in Iceland. Phones from Europe, Asia and other GSM regions should be fine.
  • Check with your phone manufacturer.  Look up your phone make and model to confirm which cellular and data networks it supports. As long as it is GSM-compatible, you’re good to use an Iceland SIM card.
  • Contact your cell provider.  If you’re unsure, get in touch with your current cell company. They can let you know if your phone is locked or confirm its network capabilities abroad.
  • Use an Iceland eSIM .  If your phone supports eSIM technology, geographic compatibility matters less because eSIMs work globally. I used an Airalo eSIM in Iceland which was super convenient.

As long as your device meets those criteria, feel confident that a local prepaid SIM card or eSIM will give you data coverage around Iceland.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Iceland

Best Iceland SIM Card

Once you confirm your phone will work abroad, the next step is tracking down a SIM card when you arrive in Iceland.

Fortunately, it’s easy to find SIM cards from Iceland providers like Siminn, Vodafone and Nova in lots of places:

Reykjavik Keflavik International Airport

Reykjavik Airport is by far the most convenient place to buy a SIM card in Iceland.

As soon as you exit the plane and pass through customs, there is a small convenience store on the right that sells local SIMs from various providers. A Vodafone store is also landside at the airport if you want to speak to a rep about specific plans.

I picked up my Nova SIM card right when I landed at Keflavik Airport and had no issues. The clerk helped me activate it on the spot in just a few minutes.

Tip:  Ask the clerk which network has the best coverage in Iceland as I did. After using the Nova SIM around the Ring Road for 2 weeks, I was happy with the data speeds and connectivity.

Reykjavik City Center

If for some reason you don’t get a SIM card at the airport when you land, Reykjavik’s city center has plenty of options:

  • Supermarkets & convenience stores  – Bonus, Kronan and 10-11 stores sell SIM cards
  • Gas stations  – Many petrol stations like Olís and Orkan carry prepaid SIMs
  • Electronics stores  – Elko and other mobile phone retailers offer SIM cards

I spotted SIM cards available for sale at most shops I went to downtown, usually right by the register. Prices were the same as the airport and staff help you activate everything.

Pro Traveler Tip:  I recommend buying a SIM card at Keflavik airport on arrival rather than waiting until Reykjavik. That way your cell data is working right off the plane to handle airport logistics like rideshares, buses etc.

Best Mobile Network Provider in Iceland

Iceland has three main cell network providers – Siminn, Vodafone and Nova. It pays to do some research to see which company offers the best service for your needs as a traveler.

I compared 4G/5G coverage maps plus gathered intel from locals on the ground. Here is how Iceland’s top three telecoms stack up:

As Iceland’s incumbent operator for over 100 years, Siminn has excellent nationwide connectivity. Their prepaid SIM gave me strong 4G signals around popular spots like Reykjavik and the Golden Circle route.

However, once I got further into the countryside along the Ring Road, there were definitely some patchy areas especially in the remote interior highlands. But no network in Iceland has flawless reception all over.

Siminn Iceland Coverage Map 2024

Siminn uses LTE band 3 and 7 in most places which is standard for Europe. I experienced average download speeds of 25 Mbps which is enough for emails, light web browsing and Google Maps navigation. Streaming video was hit or miss though.

For their prepaid SIM card in Iceland, Siminn does offer a decent 10 GB data plan that includes some domestic calling minutes for around $21. More details below on exact costs and packages.

Vodafone Iceland

Vodafone has been operating in Iceland for over two decades. They have progressively built out their 4G network which now reaches around 98% of the population.

Surprisingly though, Vodafone still lacks 5G service in Iceland which competitor Nova launched back in 2020. For me, no 5G was not an issue at all – I stayed connected just fine everywhere with my 4G SIM card.

Coverage along the Ring Road was excellent in populated zones close to the main road. Areas like the highlands, inland national parks and Westfjords suffered the usual spotty reception and data throttling.

I recorded download speeds averaging 15-20 Mbps with Vodafone when testing their prepaid SIM. That‘s fast enough for most traveler needs like GPS navigation, social media, calls/texts and light mobile browsing.

One nice perk Vodafone offers is unlimited data on select prepaid plans. Of course speeds get throttled after 1 or 2 GB depending on amount allocated, but still nice having no hard caps while roaming Iceland.

Nova Iceland

Nova is the new kid on the block in Iceland, disrupting a telecom market that was stuck with just Siminn and Vodafone for ages. They have worked hard to expand network coverage quickly.

As of 2022, Nova claims to cover 99.9% of Iceland and 75% of the huge highlands area with its 4G/LTE signal. Impressively, over two-thirds of the country has Nova 5G after its speedy rollout.

I used Nova for my Iceland trip based on local recommendations, and was very satisfied with both coverage reach and data speeds. Even in ultra remote corners of the island or at epic waterfalls, I could share travel pics and stay in touch.

During testing over 2 weeks driving the Ring Road, my Nova SIM delivered 35-45 Mbps downloads pretty consistently via 5G or 4G. That’s easily fast enough for HD video streaming, large email attachments, video calling on WhatsApp etc.

Nova is a good pick in 2024 for Iceland travelers who value connectivity and speed. Their prepaid plan pricing is also decent – for example, I paid $17.40 to get 10 GB of high-speed data during my trip. More SIM card options below!

How Much Does an Iceland SIM Card Cost?

When selecting your Iceland SIM card, apart from network coverage you’ll also want to consider:

  • Prepaid data amounts  – 1 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB or unlimited data
  • Validity  – Some SIMs last 7 days, others for one month or longer
  • Free calls & texts  – To local Icelandic numbers or international
  • EU roaming  – Allowance for other parts of Europe

I break down the latest 2024 costs for prepaid SIM cards from top providers Iceland below:

Siminn Iceland SIM Card Cost

Siminn has a couple prepaid options for visitors to Iceland:

  • Unlimited calls & texts + 10 GB data in 30 days = 2,900 ISK ($20.30)
  • 10 GB data-only plan for 30 days = 2,900 ISK ($20.30)

Both packs include a set amount of full-speed data – once exceeded, your connection gets throttled to 2G speeds. Useful for background apps and email but too slow for Netflix or YouTube.

The nice thing is both Siminn plans come with unlimited domestic calls and SMS. So you don’t have to worry about extra charges for that. However, no international minutes are included.

Vodafone Iceland SIM Card Cost

Vodafone Iceland has a wider selection of prepaid SIM packs valid for 1 or 2 months:

  • 2 GB data + 1000 domestic mins & SMS for 31 days = 2,190 ISK ($15.60)
  • 5 GB data + 3000 domestic mins & SMS for 31 days = 3,190 ISK ($22.75)
  • 10 GB data with unlimited domestic mins & SMS for 31 days = 3,790 ISK ($27)
  • 20 GB data + 3000 domestic mins & SMS for 62 days = 5,990 ISK ($43)

A nice perk of Vodafone is they allow tethering and hotspot use, whereas Nova prohibits that. So if you need data for a tablet or laptop Vodafone is a good value choice.

Once your high-speed data is used up every month, your connection gets throttled but works for simple web browsing and email. For heavy use I suggest topping up more data via their app.

Nova Iceland SIM Card Cost

I used Nova Iceland for my trip and found their prepaid pricing very reasonable:

  • 2 GB (1 GB in Europe) + unlimited calls & texts for 31 days = 1,990 ISK ($14)
  • 10 GB (5 GB in 38 Europe countries) + unlimited calls & texts for 31 days = 2,490 ISK ($17.75)
  • 15 GB (12 GB in Europe) with 300 int’l mins for 30 days = 2,990 ISK ($21)
  • 100 GB (15 GB in Europe) with 600 int’l mins for 365 days = 9,900 ISK ($70)

Nova combos feature unlimited free calls and SMS to local Icelandic numbers. International minutes let you ring other countries affordably per minute (for example, $0.23 USD/min to call the USA).

Once you use up the full-speed data, your connection gets capped around 64 Kbps. Top ups available in app from 2 GB for 1,790 ISK.

Pro Tip:  Nova had the best prices for higher data amounts like 15 GB and 100 GB plans. Great pick for heavy data users visiting Iceland.

Can I Use eSIM Card in Iceland?

Apart from old school physical SIM cards, Iceland providers also offer prepaid eSIM plans for unlocked phones and dual SIM devices.

I traveled with an eSIM for global roaming from Airalo which worked perfectly. Speeds were fast and 24/7 support is helpful for activating service.

Here are the latest 2024 eSIM rates from Airalo in Iceland:

  • 1 GB for 7 days = $4.5
  • 5 GB for 14 days = $9
  • 15 GB for 30 days = $21
  • 20 GB for 30 days = 27$

Airalo eSIMs feature data-only connectivity (no calls or texts). Plans auto-renew unless you cancel and are valid in 100+ countries.

If you need an eSIM with calling/texting, check SimOptions and Nomad which offer full mobile phone service eSIMs designed for Iceland and Europe.

I suggest grabbing an Iceland eSIM card before your trip since the country has no physical stores selling electronic SIMs. Convenient, easy, and more affordable than postpaid roaming!

Does Iceland Have 5G Coverage?

Getting blazing fast 5G service is hit or miss globally depending on where you travel. The good news is that Iceland does have a 5G network that`s expanding quickly.

As of 2024, around 75% of the island has 5G signals from Nova Iceland. Parts of the capital Reykjavik also have spotty 5G from Siminn.

Iceland 5G Coverage Map Early 2024

However, Vodafone has no 5G in Iceland yet which is surprising. For now, Nova is the only telco providing true nationwide 5G access for travelers.

In my experience using Nova’s 5G eSIM card, I recorded speed tests results between 150 – 300 Mbps in Reykjavik. In popular tourist areas around the Golden Circle, ping rates were 30 – 50 Mbps.

So while 5G is still in early stages, coverage is impressive in Iceland. With Nova’s ongoing expansion throughout 2024, speeds and availability should only increase this year.

How Much Does Iceland Cell Phone Service Cost?

Wondering what you’ll pay for cell phone service while visiting Iceland? Here’s a price breakdown:

  • Prepaid SIM Card – $15-$30 per month
  • Prepaid eSIM Card – $5-$30 per month
  • Postpaid Roaming – $10-$15 per day
  • Buying a Phone – $100-$800+

Let’s explore what’s behind those ballpark rates:

Local Prepaid SIM Card Cost

As shown earlier, picking up a prepaid SIM in Iceland costs around $15-$30 per month depending on data amounts:

  • Siminn – $20 for 10 GB
  • Vodafone – $27 for 10 GB
  • Nova – $18 for 10 GB Most travelers find 5-10 GB per month enough for light usage like emails, maps navigation and some photo uploads. If you stream more video/music or use huge downloads, pay a little extra for 15 GB or unlimited data SIMs.

Prepaid eSIM Card Cost

Iceland now has prepaid eSIM options like Airalo which are more affordable, starting around just $5 monthly:

  • Airalo – $9 for 5 GB
  • Nomad – $12 for 3 GB
  • SimOptions – $14 for 1.5 GB

For short holidays, eSIMs offer great value without contracts since you only pay for exactly the days you’ll use it.

Postpaid Roaming Rates

If you don’t get a local SIM, international postpaid cell plans from providers like T-Mobile, Vodafone and Orange let you roam in Iceland and Europe:

  • $10-15 per day
  • Slow 2G data speeds
  • Free texts; calls $0.20+ per minute

Not exactly cheap, but some postpaid accounts do include international roaming already. Be sure to check your plan.

Buying a Phone in Iceland

Don’t have an unlocked device? You can purchase local mobile phones in Iceland outright at:

  • Electronics shops – $100+ for basic devices, $800+ for iPhone/Galaxy flagships
  • Kiosks at malls and airports – Basic $100+ phones
  • Online (Amazon, eBay) – Wide selection from $100 to $1,000+

Just make sure any GSM phone you get has the proper LTE bands used in Iceland. Then simply grab a prepaid SIM card from Vodafone, Nova or other mobile carrier for service.

How Can I Save Money Calling Home?

International calls can get pricey from Iceland. Here are some smart ways to save:

  • WhatsApp  – Free calls to anyone else using WhatsApp
  • Skype  – Low per minute rates for calls to landlines/mobiles
  • Viber  – Free calls to other Viber users
  • Local SIM card  – Get a prepaid SIM with international mins

Using Over-The-Top apps is always cheaper than paying your home cell company crazy roaming fees. Or find a local SIM deal with included international minutes to call home for less.

Following those pro travel tips above will help you stay affordably connected from stunning Iceland!

Final Thoughts

Choosing the best  SIM card in Iceland  is pretty straightforward in 2024 thanks to an expanded 4G/5G network and affordable prepaid data plans.

If you’re road tripping around Iceland’s Ring Road this year I suggest Nova or Siminn prepaid SIM cards. Both work reliably for calls, texting and 15 – 20 Mbps mobile data speeds.

Vodafone is OK coverage-wise but still lacks 5G service. Since Iceland can have poor rural connectivity in parts, 5G resilience is useful when 4G drops out. This makes Nova your top option currently.

For ultimate convenience, order an eSIM before your trip or grab a prepaid SIM card on arrival at Keflavik Airport. There are kiosks right as you exit customs that sell everything you need to get set up immediately.

Here’s a quick summary of my top recommended picks for getting an Iceland SIM card or eSIM in 2024:

  • Overall Best Value:  Nova Iceland Prepaid (10 GB for $17)
  • Best Coverage:  Siminn Prepaid (10 GB for $20)
  • Best eSIM deal:  Airalo Iceland (15 GB for $21)

By following my advice in this guide about Iceland cell phone networks, buying SIM cards in-country, and top providers’ plans/pricing, you’ll stay affordably connected no matter where you travel across Iceland.

Safe travels and let me know if you have any other questions! I’m happy to help any way I can.
