2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan Review | First Ride

The popular lightweight adventure bike got a total makeover, including a liquid-cooled 452cc Single

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

You can drink a Tecate in Tecate, you can take a bath in Bath, and you can wear a fez in Fez. One of most intriguing eponymous pairings a moto-loving person can imagine is riding a Royal Enfield Himalayan in the Himalayas. The popular adventure bike has gotten a complete makeover for 2024. The question is: Can the new version bring the Himalayan into the technological present and still retain the character and charisma of the original?

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

Royal Enfield, the oldest global motorcycle brand in continuous production, launched the Himalayan in 2016 , but we didn’t get our first ride on one until 2018 .

Powered by an air-cooled 411cc Single, it has been a favorite of riders seeking a simple, versatile, and affordable motorcycle. Royal Enfield is a decidedly and intentionally retro manufacturer, so the company was meticulous, even plodding, in its development of an upgraded Himalayan. But the wait is over.

Royal Enfield Himalayan: What’s New

It is not hyperbole to say that everything about the 2024 Himalayan is new. Starting at the heart, the air-cooled 411cc Single has been replaced with a liquid-cooled 452cc Single with DOHC and 4 valves. The claimed 39.5 hp (up from a barely adequate 24) is reached at 8,000 rpm, and 29.5 lb-ft of torque (up from 24) arrives at 5,500 rpm. The new Himalayan’s entire power curve surpasses that of its predecessor, and the engine revs out farther.

The forward-canted cylinder is a visual and technological departure from the previous model’s vertical air-cooled powerplant. The engine is now a stressed member of the frame, and a new gearbox has six speeds instead of five and is part of the unit-construction, semi-dry sump engine case. Located under the fuel tank is a new airbox that provides a pleasing intake growl. Exhaust gasses run through an under-frame catalytic converter that also muffles sound, which allows for an attractively short silencer.

Suspension and braking changes are just as substantial as those to the engine. The previous conventional 41mm fork has been replaced with a Showa cartridge-type inverted fork with 43mm tubes, and the rear shock is now a linkage type with adjustable preload. Suspension travel is 7.9 inches front and rear, keeping front travel the same but bumping up from 7.1 inches of previous rear travel.

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

As before, the Himalayan rolls on spoked wheels with tube-type rims, 21-inch front (90/90-21) and 17-inch rear (140/80-17). Royal Enfield reps said certain up-spec models will be offered with tubeless spoked wheels, but details have not yet been finalized. There are still single disc brakes front and rear, but the 2-piston front caliper now squeezes a 320mm disc (up from 300) and the 1-piston rear caliper squeezes a 270mm disc (up from 240). ABS is standard and can be disabled at the rear wheel for off-road duty.

Front and center, the Himalayan has a new 4-inch TFT display that combines a multitude of innovative and modern features in a retro-style round gauge. It offers Bluetooth connectivity to a rider’s smartphone for music and navigation. The latter is powered by Google Maps and is the first of its kind for the display type and shape. On-the-fly toggling between screens is actuated by an easily accessible hand control. The Himalayan features LED lighting all around, and the tail lighting is innovatively integrated into both rear turnsignals. A USB-C port keeps a smartphone charged.

The overall aesthetic of the bike was crafted to retain core design elements of the original while projecting a more modern look. The midsection is narrower, and the bike has a lower center of gravity. There is an easily adjustable dual-height seat (32.5/33.3 inches; an optional low seat adjusts from 31.7 to 32.5 inches), and a beefier handlebar is adjustable fore and aft in two positions.

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

The new model’s wheelbase is just over 2 inches longer than the original at 59.5 inches, and ground clearance is right at 9 inches. The redesigned fuel tank holds 4.5 gallons (up from 4.0), and Royal Enfield claims a range of more than 280 miles, which translates to about 62 mpg. The Himalayan is available in five colors inspired by its namesake region: Hanle Black, Kamet White, Kaza Brown, Slate Poppy Blue, and Slate Himalayan Salt.

No adventure bike is complete without a few farkles, and the Himalayan accessory list includes handguards; a taller windscreen; touring mirrors; protectors for the engine, radiator, and headlight; aluminum panniers and top box; and a rally kit that includes a rally-style seat and tailsection and a higher aluminum exhaust can.

Royal Enfield Himalayan: Riding Impressions

Before I get into the nitty gritty, you must understand that riding in northern India is like a schizophrenic dance. When traffic is light and the tarmac is intact, it is a sweeping and graceful waltz. The ballroom is stunning in the shadows of the towering Himalayas. At other times, the dance is a frenetic mosh pit of activity with the soundtrack of blaring horns. Colorfully adorned and bedazzled commercial trucks use the tarmac dance floor in any lane they choose. Small-displacement motorcycles and scooters weave and maneuver, carrying passengers and payloads in clear excess of their design limits. Cows wander and sometimes sleep in the road as if they are fully aware of their spiritual significance in Indian culture. The “dance floor” is a constantly changing platform that varies from intact to fractured to nonexistent with no warning at all. This is exactly the dance for which the new Himalayan is designed.

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

After a briefing on how to handle riding in the region, our test ride took us up into the mountains on a crisp late October morning. The Himalayan proved to be an easy bike to adjust to. The controls are user-friendly, the shifting is precise, and response from the new throttle-by-wire is smooth and controllable. Braking, while not exemplary, was predictable, and the ABS performed well. Predictability was particularly important as I negotiated the ever-changing conditions of the northern Indian roadways.

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

The work that Royal Enfield engineers put into the new model’s ergonomics is obvious. The seating position is natural and neutral with a comfortable reach to the bar, and there is ample leg room to the footpegs. What impressed me most about the new ergos is how comfortable the bike feels in a standing position. I’m 6-foot-3 with a 34-inch inseam, and some smaller bikes force me into a semi-crouch when standing. As the conditions constantly changed on our ride, it was easy to shift around on the bike and stand over its narrow midsection.

Climbing to more than 10,000 feet in elevation, it was crucial to keep the 40-hp Single in the appropriate gear. Exiting a corner in a rev range that was even slightly too low required quick downshifting to find acceleration. To that end, the new slip/assist clutch made gear changes nearly seamless. When in the right gear, the engine performed remarkably well. I wonder what kind of performance boost the engine would realize at sea level.

The Himalayan is a very competent bike on pavement. The chassis is notably stiff in its new configuration with the engine as a stressed member. Cornering on the serpentine sections of Himalayan tarmac proved to be stable and confidence inspiring. I repeatedly dragged the pegs and felt comfortable doing so. Wind protection from the small screen was adequate, keeping some of the blast off my torso. However, I would opt for the accessory tall windscreen for touring.

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

On our way into the mountains, I got intermittent hints about how the bike would handle off-road. There were many sections where the ravages of the Himalayan environment had washed away the pavement, leaving dusty and rocky stretches. I often encountered these sections at high speeds, and the bike handled the changes in footing admirably. In the villages, the bike’s predictability was crucial as I negotiated that aforementioned dance – braking, weaving, and accelerating through the traffic frenzy.

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

After several hours of riding into the mountains, we were given the opportunity to hit the dirt. The conditions offered up sandy and rocky sections as well as some heavily rutted inclines. The updated suspension, stout frame, and 21-inch front wheel negotiated these conditions well. The front suspension felt more sorted than the rear, but I bottomed out the rear shock only once. Cranking up the rear preload a bit would have helped. The off-road capability of the bike is enhanced by the overall light feel and relaxed ergos. It felt stable and planted in the dirt even on the road-biased tires.

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

Later in the day, I had the chance to ride some icy declines and limited water sections. Again, the Himalayan was up to the task. I felt fully in control of the bike on the slick sections, and switching off rear ABS negated any unsettling freewheeling sensation from the rear brake. All in all, the new Himalayan handled everything admirably. The bike was stable at speed on the tarmac, predictable in the dirt, and controllable on dodgy surfaces. What else can you ask of a lightweight ADV?

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

If adventure bikes are the Swiss Army knives of the motorcycling world, then the light, versatile Himalayan resides comfortably in that pocket. The new model is a marked upgrade from its already popular predecessor. This is not a bike intended to wow your riding buddies with power numbers or cutting-edge technology. Rather, it’s a reliable, comfortable, competent all-around motorcycle available at a reasonable price (U.S. pricing is not yet available, but it shouldn’t be drastically higher than the $5,449 base price of the 2023 model). If the Himalayan can handle the extremity of the conditions in the region after which it is named, it should continue to be a popular choice worldwide.

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

The answer to the question posed earlier is a resounding “yes” – the new Himalayan brings the model into the present and still emits its fair share of character and charisma.

I’m not understanding that metaphor. Are Swiss Army knives pockets?

I’m looking for a replacement for my well-worn DRZ400S and this bike really interests me. My main objection would be the weight … 100 pounds heavier than my DRZ. Not sure why it’s so heavy??

The biggest reason is likely the steel frame which is a must-have for the Indian market. They prioritize strength and easy repairs over light weight.

Then there is the 4.5 gallon fuel tank, ABS, emission system that meets Euro V, steel crash bars, rear rack, windscreen, and a real rider and passenger seat instead of the dirt bike banana seat on the DR.

It’s nice. But I’m thinking that the price will probably be significantly higher than the old bike. New frame, all new water cooled DOHC engine, Showa inverted forks, bigger brakes, ABS, all that stuff costs money. Expect a $1000 price hike. Still not a bad price for everything you get, and there isn’t a lot of direct competition out there.

Royal Enfield Himalayan (2024-on) Review

Royal Enfield Himalayan - main image

  • All new water cooled 452cc engine
  • Good quality Showa suspension
  • User friendly and unintimidating

At a glance

Overall rating.

The all new Himalayan adventure bike marks a new era for Royal Enfield with the introduction of the Indian manufacturers first ever water cooled engine. With a claimed 40bhp and 29.5 ft/lb torque this 450 is a significant step in terms of performance over the original 24bhp Himalayan.

Better quality suspension, improved ground clearance and the addition of ride by wire electronics which give the option of two different engine maps. Switchable ABS for off-road use and bigger brake discs and wheels means it remains as competent off-road as it does on-road.

Royal Enfield Himalayan - from the front

Despite significant weight savings with the new engine and frame, it still tips the scales at 181kg dry or 196kg wet which includes all fluids and the 17litre fuel tank 90% full making it a heavy bike for what is designed to be a lightweight adventure bike.

It’s difficult to know exactly why the weight is so high and only 2kg lighter than the previous model given that the new engine alone weighs 10kg less, but in its defence, it has clearly been built to last and boasts an impressive payload of 198kg.

Royal Enfield Himalayan - cornering

Retaining the same happy go lucky character of the original Himalayan it’s a very easy bike to ride and as unintimidating as they come. It’s not fast or high tech offering but in the real world of adventure travel it now ticks even more boxes than its predecessor.

At the world press launch in Manali, in the Himalayas, Enfield did not reveal the price of the bike, but have since confirmed that prices will start at £5750 for the base model. It will then climb to £5850 for the mid-spec 'Pass' trim, and up to £6300 for the most expensive 'Summit' model.

This model is set to replace the old Royal Enfield Himalayan in spring 2024. However, it appears this might not be the end of the line for development of the platform. At the Eicma show in Milan in November 2023, Royal Enfield revealed an Electric Test Bed prototype  that hints towards a battery-powered future for the model.

Ride quality & brakes

Given the weight of the bike, the payload and the fact that it is designed to be able to handle round the world adventures, Enfield have taken the suspension on the Himalayan seriously but without blowing the budget.

Up front they have 43mm upside down Showa forks with 200mm of travel. With a target rider weight of around 85kg they offer impressive performance despite being non adjustable. Riding on notoriously rough, pot holed or completely unmade roads in India they gave good control on both rebound and damping – handling sharp, heavy hits and higher speed compressions which would see some of it’s rivals in the class crashing through the stroke of the forks and bottoming out.

Royal Enfield Himalayan - shock

The Showa rear shock also gives 200mm of travel and the same impressive control over bumps. With minimal static sag and good support it ensures the bike is well balanced. Unlike the non adjustable front forks the shock can be adjusted – albeit for pre-load only. Using the under seat tool kit and C-spanner the there are seven setting of spring preload to cope with heavier riders or riders carrying luggage, a pillion; or both.

Royal Enfield Himalayan - close static

Brakes have also been up graded over the previous model with a 320mm single front disc and two piston caliper with a 270mm rear disc and single piston caliper. The front brake is non adjustable, but provides good braking performance. Predictable both on and off-road with enough power to only need one finger when riding on the dirt. The big rear brake gives good performance and control and is also adjustable. With road biased ABS as standard there is also an off-road setting which disables the ABS on the rear wheel while also giving an offroad specific front ABS setting.

Enfield’s first ever water cooled engine is a 452cc single cylinder with DOHC and a bore and stroke of 84mm x 81.5mm. Despite its higher spec over the previous model, it retains a similar character with the long stroke motor giving a broader spread of power and revs while retaining its ability to chug like an old school single at low RPM. Being water cooled it now revs harder and longer with significantly improved power and torque throughout the rev range.

Royal Enfield Himalayan - engine close up

Despite the increase in power it is still not a powerful or fast bike, with overtakes needing to be planned rather than spontaneous. Riding at altitude in excess of 3,000m on the launch, the subsequent lack of oxygen would have almost certainly taken the edge of the performance. But despite this it is still an engaging bike to ride and as a package able to make reasonable real world progress on smaller roads while being capable of happily cruising at 70mph, helped by it’s new six speed gearbox.

Being a long stroke single it doesn’t need to be revved and it will chug along at anything over 2,500rpm without complaint. Its everyday sweet spot is between 3,000 and 5,000rpm but because it will happily carry on revving with an impressively flat power and torque curve.

Reliability & build quality

Like its predecessor the new Himalayan is built to last. Having been developed in the Himalayas where riding conditions are harsh, its been designed to handle crashes and deal with incredibly rough and unpredictable road and off-road terrain. A large proportion of the components are steel which is a major factor in its heavy weight, but this comes with the advantage of it being tough and easily bent back into shape in the event of a crash. It also comes well protected as standard with additional crash protection available.

Royal Enfield Himalayan - scenery

Given that it now has a fully water cooled engine with ride-by-wire electronics only time will tell if it will be as reliable as the original air cooled model.

Value vs rivals

Enfield have not yet released a price for the bike meaning we are unable to compare it directly against its rivals, but the old version went up against the likes of the KTM 390 Adventure , Suzuki V-Strom 250 , BMW G310GS and Kawasaki Versys 300 . It was cheaper than all of those, though.

The stand out new tech on the bike is the 4” circular TFT dash along with its phone connectivity. It’s gives a clean display with plenty of information available from voltage, fuel range right through to a digital compass – all of which is controlled via a small five way, thumb operated joy stick on the left hand switch gear. There is a mode button on the right hand bar where you can chose between two engine maps – eco and performance as well as switch the ABS to off-road mode. A longer press on the button changes the dash display from a conventional layout with speed, gear and a traditional rev counter – all be it digital.

Royal Enfield Himalayan - dials

You can also connect your phone to the dash and by using the Royal Enfield App where you can select your destination it will plan your route using Google Maps, which is also displayed on the TFT dash. You can also connect and play and control music using the left hand joy stick. It’s an interesting addition and will suit many riders, but there are downsides. The first being that for the navigation to work your phone can not be locked which takes a heavy toll on battery life. There is a USB C charging point on the bike which you are forced to use if you want to use the navigation for more than a few hours without your phone battery going flat.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Currently the App does not support GPX files so you would currently be unable to us ethe dash to navigate an off road route like the Trans Euro Trail.

There are a range of accessories for the new bike including tubeless wheel, panniers, additional crash protection and taller screen.

While there are plenty of options available to up-spec the bikes, there are some glaring omissions such as cruise control which would be relatively simple given that the bike is now ride by wire. There is also no option for factory fitted heated grips which seems bizarre given that it has been developed in such a high altitude, cold climate.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan Review

The new Royal Enfield Himalayan dials up the comfort level. Plus, you don’t have to worry about getting lost anymore.

Cycle News 2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan Review

By Kit Palmer

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is a different kind of motorcycle. That’s obvious just by looking at it. Those not in the know would understandably assume that you just completed a masterful restoration job on an old motorcycle you found in someone’s barn when riding up on the Himalayan for the first time; after all, it does look like it just rolled out of the 1940s. But, no, the Himalayan is as new as it gets, but the Royal Enfield name, well, that’s a very different story.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan front view

One of Royal Enfield’s claims to fame is being the world’s oldest continuously operating motorcycle manufacturer. Royal Enfield has been pumping out motorcycles non-stop since 1901. Even two Great World Wars couldn’t stop them. The company got its start in Great Britain but now builds its bikes in India. Its North American headquarters is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and offers a handful of models here in the U.S. Besides the Himalayan, you have the all-new Meteor 350 and two 650cc twins, the INT 650 and Continental GT 650.

The Himalayan is now five years old in the U.S., arriving on the scene as a small-capacity adventure motorcycle designed to tackle semi-challenging terrain but at a much more sedate pace than many of its higher-performance and higher-priced competitors.

Yes, perhaps the most compelling thing about the Himalayan is its price. It retails for just $5299. How can you not think twice about that?

And then there’s the retro styling that makes it stand out from the other rides in its class. Right away, there are lots to like about the Himalayan before you even throw a leg over it.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan riding off-road

Royal Enfield just revealed its latest Himalayan, with its new Tripper navigation system and improved rider comfort, and just a few days later, we got the chance to ride it.

As before, the Himalayan is driven by an air/oil-cooled 411cc single-cylinder, SOHC four-stroke engine that delivers a whopping 24 horsepower and 23.6 lb-ft of torque. It’s fuel-injected and, while it might have that manual kick-starter look, don’t worry, it’s fitted with an electric starter.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan Tripper GPS pod

The engine rests on dual steel frame rails, and the whole package weighs in at approximately 440 pounds, according to Royal Enfield’s numbers. It has modern disc brakes with ABS, and it rolls on 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels that are fitted with Pirelli MT60 dirt/street tires.

The Himalayan is offered in six (up from three) colorways, including Lake blue, the color of the Himalayan you see on these pages.

The first (and last) Himalayan we tested was the 2020 Royal Enfield Himalayan and our biggest takeaway was how well it performed for such an old-school-looking and inexpensive motorcycle. (Back then, the Himalayan sold for $4749, so the price has gone up slightly.) We said that part of the Himalayan’s charm was its simplicity, yet it still did everything it needed to do to take you out for a great adventure on two wheels. The same holds true today, even more so.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan right side

This was my first time on any Himalayan, and I must agree with our last test. It is a surprisingly capable motorcycle both on and off the road, but the key to enjoying the Himalayan at its best is taking your time on it. This bike inspires you to slow down and soak in the sights, one of the best qualities of adventure riding anyway.

It only has seven-plus inches of wheel travel, but the Himalayan makes the most of those seven inches, and since there are only 8.6 inches of ground clearance, you quickly learn what the Himalayan’s boundaries are, and they are just wide enough to still have fun, even if the bike doesn’t like to be jumped. It’s not crazy about G-outs, either.

The Himalayan is a comfortable motorcycle, and the low 31.5-inch seat height gives you confidence rolling up to a stop and while riding over technical terrain. It’s easy to plant your foot solidly on the ground, which is great for new riders, too.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan engine

The Himalayan is proof that you don’t need boatloads of horsepower to have a good time. It’s not a fast motorcycle, but it’s not designed to be. As long as you remind yourself that there is no checkered flag at the end of the trail, you’ll be just fine on the Himalayan.

First gear is low enough to crawl up almost anything. However, I found the gap between first and second to be somewhat wide at times, most notably on the dirt, especially while climbing small hills. I quickly learned that, when in doubt, shift up and second gear will usually do the trick; when you think the engine is about to stall, it just keeps plugging away (with a bit of assistance from the clutch). Otherwise, the five-speed transmission works in harmony with the motor.

I spent a good chunk of time on the pavement aboard the Himalayan and found it quite pleasant. For a small-bore single-cylinder four-stroke, vibes are very acceptable up to its 6500-rpm redline. The bike is plenty fast enough to keep up with the traffic flow, though I would always seek out the back routes on this bike and do my best to avoid the busy open highways if it were my bike.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan left side

Although I wasn’t on it long enough to calculate, I do know that our 2020 Himalayan averaged 55 mpg, which bought you an easy 200-plus miles from the four-gallon fuel tank. I expect the ’22 to do the same.

So, what is the difference between the previous Himalayan and the newest one? There are a few things. Perhaps most notable, you can now quickly disengage the rear ABS via a button on the dash. It works by pressing it for five to six seconds as soon you turn on the ignition, then hit the starter button. If the ABS light starts to blink, you did it correctly. If not (doesn’t blink), you must start the process over again. The front ABS remains engaged, though I never felt it kick during this ride. It’s not obtrusive at all, that is for sure.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan dual sport motorcycle

The other big news is what RE calls its Royal Enfield Tripper Navigation system, which is new to the North American market. A somewhat small circular pod has been added to the right side of the instrument dash that displays intuitive turn-by-turn navigation through the Google Maps platform. To make it all happen, you must pair it with your smartphone via the Royal Enfield App. To make alterations (like to change destinations), you must stop and retrieve your smartphone, which sounds like a bit of a pain but is probably better than fiddling with it while you’re riding. When not in navigation mode, the pod turns into a clock.

Focus went into making the Himalayan even more comfortable. It has new seat padding and a new windscreen. The updated screen, combined with the large round headlight, does an admirable job deflecting the windblast off the rider.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan trail riding

The front rack, those protective tubular steel bars next to the fuel tank that is impossible not to notice, are shorter in length to prevent bruised kneecaps.

Also, the rear carrier rack has been redesigned. It’s now lighter and provides improved fastening and placement of luggage. The rack is also positioned lower, making it easier to swing your leg over the bike.

So, the new Himalayan might cost more than the Himalayan we last rode in 2020, but, as you can see, you do get a lot for that extra $550, but you can take some solace knowing it’s only $300 more than the 2021 Himalayan.

Overall, I like how Royal Enfield took a different approach to adventure riding, combining simplicity with good performance and comfort, sprinkling it with some nice amenities, and putting it all together for a low price. And how can you not love its retro look? CN

FAR FROM HOME

Yet so close.

PREPARE FOR ALL WEATHERS

And you will certainly be right..

The Ladakh region is almost always dry even more during the summer months (June-September).

Temperatures in Leh can reach -35 °C (-31 °F) and up to 35 °C (95 °F) in the summer. High altitudes and deserts can result in icy conditions, and snow on the high peaks lasts until early July.

HOMEWARD ROAD

Finding comfort in the arms of the mountain.

The Himalayan Silkroad in India is about as remote as it gets. Barely penetrable mountain passes mean the valleys, and the communities within them, are cut off for much of each calendar year, making it a place of great strategic importance.

For ages, traders roamed the silk road from civilization to civilization, making this nomadic way of living the beginnings of globalization.

Along the tremulous roads, you will find hotels, lodges, and mountain refuges where you can refuel, recharge and recover before riding onwards, deeper into the secluded mountains that call your name.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

You will sleep along the road in selected accommodations that serve good food. Expect basic comfort.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Somewhere along the road in abandoned deserts tent camps will be waiting for hungry travellers. We will stop there too.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

If you are a writer, a reader or an observer, there is always time to relax and enjoy the pass of time. Welcome home, nomads.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Forget everything you've seen, the views of the valleys in the Himalayas will change all your previous perspectives.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

UNADULTERATED

Immersive culture..

The Silk Route valleys have been elusive and hostile places for centuries. Surrounded by great Himalayan peaks, averaging 3,600m and with peaks as high as 7,000m, this route has remained relatively untouched, offering the unadulterated experience of the local Himalayan culture.

This journey is an opportunity for Royal Enfield riders to discover the Himalayas and take their adventure to the next level.

Riding through off-road stretches, challenging terrain, water crossings, and uncharted roads are only a few of the spectacular things that one will come across.

This journey is your chance to discover the Himalayas on a Royal Enfield as you ride off-road, over-water, and conquer your mountain dreams.

Arrival in Delhi

You’re met at the airport and transferred to a hotel in the centre of Delhi. Your room is available from midday. You can spend the rest of the day visiting the capital.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Delhi - Jim Corbett Park - 168 miles

We make an early start and a private vehicle takes us to Jim Corbett National Park. We arrive at the park, at the foothills of the first Lower Himalayas, and rest at the hotel.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Jim Corbett Park - Sitla - 93 miles

After visiting our first temple, we cruise along the edge of the Himalayan foothills before finally climbing to 2,000 m altitude in one go and reaching Nainital, where we have a lakeside lunch. We make a second ascent of the day, to the heart of rural Kumaon, along a fantastic little mountain road, which is narrow but easy to ride.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Sitla - Binsar - 75 miles

We pass through charming Kumaon and make a short stop at Katarmal Sun Temple before arriving in Kasar Devi, where Bob Dylan and other beatniks once stayed. A small haven of peace, which is still as calm as ever! We visit Panchachuli weaving factory before venturing deeper into Binsar’s splendid forest, at more than 2,000 m altitude, where you could easily imagine elves appearing from behind the twisted tree trunks!

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Binsar - Kausani - 134 miles

We take a morning ride to Jageshwar temple, a religious site which dates back 2,500 years. Then, just for the pure pleasure of testing out the twists and turns, we head east, where the second highest peak in India, the Nanda Devi (7,816 m) can be seen on a clear day. After lunch, we take a short trek through a typical Kumaon hamlet, which managed to preserve its ancient architecture and organisation.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Kausani - Chamoli - 92 miles

Goodbye Kumaon, hello Garhwal! Not only do we have more “challenging” roads ahead, but at the end of the day, we also have a series of endless curves. Millennial temple of Bajinath, stealthy views of the Himalayan high peaks and small gorges on the Pindar River mark this stage. We have our first meeting with the Ganges, which here is called Alaknanda.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Chamoli - Narayankoti - 65 miles

We ride through the beautiful forest of the natural sanctuary of Kedarnath, to the pass of Chopta (2880m). Visit on the way of the very old temple of Shiva in Gopeshwar, a religious landmark on pilgrim routes. After lunch, a small, relatively easy trek to a small lake; Uttarakhand’s full beauty is revealed when we take the time to walk through it.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Narayankoti - Rudraprayag - 75 miles

We follow the Mandakini valley and ride up a tiny road through Kedarnath forest, hamlets and terraced fields: a hidden gem of a road. At 2,200 m, we reach the starting point for an easy trek well worth the effort: we walk to Kartik Swami temple, which offers one of the most spectacular views of Uttarakhand. We climb down towards Rudraprayag where the pure waters of the Mandakini river flows into the Ganges.

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Rudraprayag - Kanatal - 90 miles

We go a little ahead of the Mandakini before reaching the Chirbhattiya pass, a charming secondary road, also "forgotten", and without traffic. Picnic, swim in the river. After skirting the huge reservoir of Tehri dam, we ride up to Kanatal for the night, resting on a ridge at over 2000m altitude. Almost a refuge!

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Kanatal - Haridwar - 85 miles

After coming down from the fresh air in the peaks, we stop off at Rishikesh. We then go down to Haridwar, the holiest of the holy cities, on a road wedged between Rajaji national park and the Ganges canal. After dropping off our luggage, we go to witness the daily rituals of devout Hindus on the banks of the sacred river at the end of the afternoon. A permanent spectacle in this town, and a real feast for the eyes!

royal enfield himalayan world tour

Haridwar - Delhi - 143 miles

You are taken to your hotel in the capital and can spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Motorcycle gear

Every rider must bring his own motorcycle protective gear and helmet. We do not recommend wearing leather motorbike suits as we do not go fast on the bikes. IS IT A PROBLEM IF I WANT TO COME ALONE?

Not at all. Indian hotels usually have double bed rooms, if you don't want to be paired with one of your super friendly group mates, you can ask for single bed rooms for an additional fee, please request this in the application form.

DO I NEED A VISA?

It depends on your nationality. From most of the countries you will need a visa which is a really easy process possible to make online with an average price of 70 USD. Please always check it on your local embassy’s website.

WHICH COUNTRIES WILL WE VISIT?

We’ll stay between the borders of India for the whole trip.

WHAT KIND OF DRIVING LICENSE DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE ON THE TRIP AS A MOTORBIKER?

You need to have a motorcycle driving license valid for an 500 cc motorbike (at least).

WHAT CAN I DO IF I REALLY WANT TO ATTEND, BUT I CAN NOT RIDE?

You can sit into the back-up van and enjoy totally the same trip while saving 300 EUR. Also you will have the chance to sit and ride on the bike behind our guides or if you come together with a rider you can also sit on the back theyer bike for most part of the trip.

IN WHAT KIND OF MOTORCYCLE CLOTHES SHOULD I RIDE?

It depends on your choice. We do not recommend wearing leather motorbike suits as we do not go fast on the bikes. But due to the fact that the temperature is very different in the variant heights, it is good to wear multiple layers, such as in case of skiing. It’s a good idea to wear either a durable high top hiking boot, a real biking boot or even a dirt bike boot.

IS IT EXPECTED TO RAIN?

In Delhi it is absolutely possible, but we won't ride there. In Manali rain can occur in the first two days, then the probability is very small, in most of the time we'll ride in a high altitude desert.

SHOULD I BRING MY OWN HELMET? IF YES, WHAT KIND IS THE BEST?

They provide helmets if necessary, but obviously these ones are used and not from the highest quality. We recommend you bring your own one! It is your decision what kind of a helmet you prefer, but you need to be prepared for defending yourself against very strong sunshine and a lot of dust.

WHAT KIND OF ROAD CONDITIONS SHOULD I EXPECT?

There will be parts with straight, smooth concrete roads, but this is not typical. You need to be prepared for bumpy dirt roads, river crossings, mud, sand, gravel, lots of curves and anything you can imagine.

FOR WHAT KIND OF HEALTH ISSUES SHOULD I BE PREPARED?

First of all we are travelling in India, so you need to know that diarrhea and stomach infections can occur. Our team will always advise you what to eat and drink. Besides Delhi we are staying in a mountain area for the full-time, where water is a lot cleaner, so the risk of getting sick is a lot lower, for instance last year nobody got sick. It’s always a good idea to keep a hand sanitizer or a small bottle of spirit in your bag. Secondly, altitude sickness is a significant issue, although we reach the first 5000 meter high pass in 3 days, usually it is demanding for your body. The risk is getting higher, if you are overweight, you have cardiovascular diseases or high blood pressure or in case of smoking. If you are unsure, talk to your doctor. We'll spend 10 days above 3300 meters and we'll cross 5000 meter passes 5 times. However, if anyone feels unwell, he/she can sit in the back-up car with an oxygen cylinder. From this point someone else will ride his/her bike for a while.

IS THE FUEL SUPPLY SOLVED IN THE WHOLE TRIP?

Yes, it is included in the price and the group leaders will take care of it, they bring extra supply in the back-up van.

WHO LEADS THE TOUR?

The staff contains the following people: a professional motorbiker mountain guide grown up in the mountains of the Himalaya (he's the one who leads the group on the roads), a well-equipped mechanic (he's an expert of Royal Enfield bikes, travelling in the back-up van with his tools and spare parts), another group leader sitting in the back-up van (he can ride anybody's bike if anything goes wrong and he takes care of any upcoming situation) and there is also a group leader from BTS, who has already done this trip multiple times and is experienced in motorcycle guiding, the local culture and sights.

HOW DO BAGS TRAVEL, WHAT KIND OF BAGS SHOULD I BRING?

You need to pack into at least 2 bags. The big bag travels in or on the back-up van so don't bring your expensive suitcases (you can pack them in and out everyday in the hotel), and hand baggages will be strapped on your motorbikes. In this you should have your extra layers, water, camera and any personal items you need during the day.

WHAT KIND OF VACCINATIONS SHOULD I HAVE?

Please ask your local health authority. Usually there are no mandatory vaccinations, but the recommended ones are: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, typhoid, DPT, Meningitis.

ARE THERE ANY MILITARY OR POLITICAL RISKS?

Due to the fact that the route runs on the Indian-Chinese-Pakistan border region, there is a very strong military presence with lots of camps on the way. Our local guides are familiar with the military camps and have a good relationship with them. These places are responsible for medical tasks as well in these areas. Tourism is very developed and is a significant income source in this region, so they are very nice with tourists and pay attention to them. If any problematic situation develops, they would also handle them, no problems have occurred in the past years.

HOW MUCH POCKET-MONEY WILL I NEED?

Depending on spending habits your budget for the trip should range from 250-500 USD. For reference, a meal is between 1-10 USD.

WHAT IS THE LOCAL CURRENCY AND WHERE TO CHANGE MONEY? ARE THERE ATM-S AND CAN I PAY BY CARD?

The currency is Indian Rupee INR. We will have the opportunity to change money at the airport after the arrival to Delhi, or somewhere in the city center. ATM-s and credit card payments are not typical, but can occur in Dehli, Manali and Leh (they do not accept all card types). So we suggest bringing USD in cash and change (you'll have the opportunity to change money in Delhi, Manali and Leh).

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BUY AND DRINK ALCOHOL DURING THE TRIP?

Buying alcohol is somewhat more difficult at most of our accommodations, they can serve beer if you preorder it and some local rum. It is advised to take spirits from home or buy them at the airport. In larger cities there are dedicated alcohol shops, although the price of it rises in proportion to the height above sea level.

WHAT KIND OF INSURANCE SHOULD I TAKE OUT?

You'll need to have one that is valid for motorcycling, valid in India and valid above 5000 meters altitude. If you need help, please get in touch with us!

WHAT KIND OF ACCOMMODATIONS SHOULD I EXPECT ALONG THE WAY?

11 nights in high standard 3 star hotels in double bed rooms, with hot showers and wifi. 3 nights in glamping style tents, which are equipped with beds and bathrooms. The hospitality of the locals makes up for all the inconveniences.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU'LL GET A FLAT TIRE OR ANYTHING ELSE IS BROKEN?

You shouldn't worry, the back-up van with the mechanic is always the last one on the road, just park your bike on the side of the road, wait for him and enjoy the stunning scenery while he repairs your bike. Usually he can fix anything within 15 mins. The head of the group will wait for you at the next resting stop.

WILL I HAVE WIFI AND MOBILE NETWORK COVERAGE DURING THE TRIP?

In the big cities such as Delhi, Manali and Leh you’ll have both. In the remote areas it is better not to count on it, but at least every second or maximum 3rd day you will be able to contact the rest of the world. :)

The best way to explore some of the most spectacular landscapes and remote regions on Earth is on a motorcycle. Just think about it: crossing the Himalayan range with its 5000 m high passes would be simply impossible on foot, extremely hard to ride by bicycle, and plain boring driving in a car. Thank you for arranging such a well organized and enjoyable tour for 6 Kiwis and 2 Frogs. The bikes were great, guide and support mechanic were great, and the Ladakh scenery was impressive. Roads were mostly excellent, but with a few rough bits thrown in which added to the challenge. All our needs were well looked after - suitable accommodation, restaurants and liquids as required (during ride and beers after a hard day in the saddle). I would highly recommend Indian Rides for your Indian motorcycle tour.

This was my time time in India and on a Royal Enfield Motorcycle . Narendra has put together an unforgettable adventure and a well planned challenge to the seasoned rider. His planning includes periods for staged altitude acclimatization, expected travel time, availability of accommodation and reduced traffic density. I cannot thank Narendra, Ram and Armar enough for providing us a fabulous journey, good company and amazing memories of one of the most breathtaking areas in the world.

We had been to Ladakh for 2 weeks and it seems that the tour is over but in our minds we are still their. Many thanks to Indian Rides for organising such memorable trip and offering their best services. The memories will always be cherished and we would want to come back to India again with them.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan First Ride Review

Going the distance..

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan First Ride Review

Royal Enfield’s Himalayan debuted in the North American market in 2018, and in that time, the pint-sized ADV has become Enfield’s best-seller in the U.S. Thanks to the bike's rugged styling, utilitarian design, and approachable demeanor, the budget-conscious adventure bike is at home both on the trail and the weekday commute. The Himalayan casts a wide net with simplicity and versatility, serving beginner and experienced riders alike.

With American adventurers continuing to flock to the small-bore ADV, Royal Enfield didn’t want to ruin a good thing. As a result, the Himalayan remains largely the same in 2022 . The half-duplex split frame still cradles an air-cooled, SOHC, 411cc single and a 21-inch front wheel retains the model’s off-road prowess. While Royal Enfield didn’t fix what wasn’t broken, it addressed common owner feedback with touring-oriented upgrades.

Choice cockpit revisions now equip the adventure bike for long-distance travel while the firm’s Tripper navigation pod points the way. With Royal Enfield adding more road-focused features to the Himalayan in 2022, we wondered if the changes would sacrifice the Himalayan’s identity or only amplify the ADV’s flexibility? Fortunately, Royal Enfield invited us to find out for ourselves with a daylong test of the 2022 Himalayan on the backroad highways and off-road trails of Temecula, California.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan - Ergonomics

The Himalayan may be a small-capacity adventurer but Royal Enfield equips it to fit riders of all shapes and sizes. The brand aims to expand that appeal in 2022 with slightly altered ergonomics. Now, the front rack isn’t just slimmer but shifted forward by 90mm (3.5 inches). With a 32-inch inseam, my knees easily fit into the tank cutouts and never met the tubular steel rack, but taller riders will embrace the added legroom.

Aside from the new rack, Royal Enfield also fortified both the seat with improved cushioning. The Himalayan’s original unit may have been far from uncomfortable, but dual-layer foam keeps the rider in the saddle even longer. Those plush accommodations only started wearing thin after a four-hour mixed ride (road and dirt) and most riders should squeeze extra mileage out of the robust new perch.

Of course, with extra distance comes extra gear, and a new rear carrier top plate improves the bike’s packing capabilities. In the past, many Himalayan owners turned to the aftermarket for a sturdier base plate. Now, Enfield includes the component as standard equipment. Unfortunately, we didn’t put the rear carrier to the test during the press launch, but the extra plate is a clear improvement over the old slotted unit. From tail bags to roll-top dry bags, the Himalayan’s new carrier offers a much better platform to lash luggage for the long haul.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan - Side, Right

A refined windscreen shape also makes life on the open road more pleasant. With a wider base, the new screen keeps the elements and bugs off the rider's core. However, at five feet, 10 inches, the wind bounced off my helmet’s chin bar and inner shoulders. For that reason, the Himalayan is most pleasant up to 65 mph. Speeds above that tend to batter the rider and demand much more of the 411cc single.

The Himalayan’s cockpit may be more hospitable, but the trustworthy thumper returns in BS-6 form (Indian emissions standard). As a result, lean fueling led to several stall-outs upon startup. The engine got past those hiccups after several throttle pulls during the warm-up process and they didn't return throughout the day. The fueling doesn’t impact the rest of the Himalayan’s power delivery though, with the mill retaining its 24.3 peak horsepower and 23.6 lb-ft of torque.

That torque may max out at 4,000-4,500 rpm, but roll-on power proves strongest at 5,000 rpm. Luckily, the wee ADV cruises along at 65 mph at 5,000 rpm in top gear (fifth), allowing the rider to throttle out of potentially dangerous situations on the highway. Once the single surpasses that 5,000-rpm mark, it barrels to its peak horsepower at 6,500 rpm. Unfortunately, that’s also the Himalayan’s redline, so riders have to shift as soon as the powerplant hits its stride.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan - Engine

Even with that narrow powerband, the practical engine suits both the beaten path and dirt detours. Royal Enfield doesn’t stock the adventurer with a slipper-assist clutch, but the standard multi-plate wet unit works well when climbing through the gears on the pavement or feathering the clutch on the trail. Vibrations may be present at the bars but they're never close to bothersome and the small-bore thumper throws minimal heat onto the rider.

Despite its new BS-6-compliant configuration, the 411cc single still delivers enough oomph to keep the Himalayan both accessible and entertaining. The Himalayan’s engine may be stone-simple but it’s water-tight, and Royal Enfield matches that reliability with its tried-and-true chassis.

After a day of navigating rock-strewn trails and winding canyon roads, the Himalayan’s suspension proved surprisingly stout. Many of its competitors opt for undersprung suspenders to buffer beginners from harsh off-road conditions. Royal Enfield takes another tack with the Himalayan, providing a simple yet surprisingly competent setup. The Himalayan’s 439-pound curb way may necessitate stiffer springs, but blowing through the 41mm conventional fork’s 7.8 inches of travel or the linkage-equipped monoshock’s seven inches of travel isn’t easy. From washboard to rock gardens, the suspension managed everything the trail could throw at it.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan - Hill

On the road, the chassis provides direct and predictable handling. It may not be the nimblest model in the category, but it remains fun in the twisties and capable in tough terrain. The Himalayan’s non-adjustable suspenders are certainly budget-friendly, but the factory compression and damping settings outperform that label. Of course, the suspension has its limits both on and off-road, but the setup allows the rider to grow with the adventure bike.

On the other hand, the braking system certainly has room for improvement. ABS governs the two-piston caliper mated to a 300mm disc at the front as well as the 240mm rotor and single-pot binder out back, but neither tout strong initial bite or reliable feel. Stopping power at both ends is sufficient, however, especially for the 24.3-horsepower mill.

While riders can switch off the rear ABS for off-road treks, the system is quite primitive. When held down, the ABS button doesn’t actually depress, making the five-second deactivation cycle a crapshoot. To compound the issue, the system reverts to dual-channel ABS each time the rider hits the kill switch. With practice, the rider can master the sequence and hit the trail in no time, but it takes time to develop that touch. The Himalayan’s ABS switch may be a minor inconvenience, but the new Tripper navigation device is much more intuitive.

When we tested Royal Enfield’s Meteor 350 in April, 2021, we weren’t particularly impressed with the cruiser’s Tripper navigation system. Based on the Google Maps Platformed and powered by the Royal Enfield app, the Tripper previously tripped over itself, losing connection even before the Meteor 350 reached its first turn. Royal Enfield's latest update addresses that premature disconnection.

To pair the system with a smartphone, the user simply selects the available Tripper unit and keys the pod’s six-digit code into the app. Once connected, the navigation provides simple turn-by-turn directions. The small, circular TFT screen doesn’t display street names, but it does report the distance before each turn. For that reason, those on the open road may benefit from it more than urban riders. This time around, the Tripper navigation system guided me to my final destination without a hitch, which is a reassuring feat for the touring-minded Himalayan.

The ergonomic and navigation update may seem modest, but Royal Enfield matches that with an equally modest $5,299 price tag. The $300 markup over the previous model seems fair for the added functionality and comfort, but it’s an even bigger value when you consider the fact that the Himalayan’s MSRP actually rose at the current rate of inflation. No, the 2022 iteration doesn’t revolutionize the platform, but when you have such a successful beginner ADV on your hands, that’s a good thing.

Royal Enfield’s select revisions improve on the previous model’s touring chops while maintaining the Himalayan’s character, approachability, and off-road capabilities. Some may believe that the brand could have gone further with the 2022 upgrades, but we have a feeling that Royal Enfield is leaving room for future models in its adventure range.

What is the riding like on a Himalayan Motorcycle Tour?

While the riding in the Himalayas can technically be classed as ‘on-road riding’, the condition of these roads varies drastically! Some of the roads are 100% dirt & gravel – smooth in places and rough, rutty & rocky in others. Some of the roads are tarmac, but laden with potholes. Some of the roads appear to be perfect tarmac, but will suddenly turn bumpy, or you’ll go around the corner and there’ll be sand across the road. The conditions of the ‘roads’ can change within the blink of an eye, so you need to keep your eye on the ball (which can be difficult when the views are so amazing!). Road works have advanced hugely since we first started running motorcycle tours in the Himalayas and in the Indian Himalayas the average ‘unpaved’ sections of the tours are approximately 30-40%… but as we say – even the condition of the new tarmac roads can be hazardous!

99% of the roads in the Himalayas are far from straight. You’ll encounter countless hairpin turns and twisty bends. The riding is simply phenomenal and every day will leave you grinning from ear to ear!

When is the best time of year for a motorcycle tour in the Himalayas?

The window for motorcycle tours in the Himalayas is very short and this window differs depending on the areas of the mountains. Due to the extreme weather conditions over the winter months and the large amount of snowfall each year, the roads are only open & safe to travel from the end May to September / October (take a look at the individual tours to see what months are best for those). Many people assume that as it is also the monsoon season over these months and it will be extremely rainy during the tour. While this is the case in some regions, it will be completely untrue in others, generally in the higher altitudes.

Generally the earlier months in the motorcycle riding season will have a higher chance of rain, but the temperatures will be warmer. Conditions on the ground will also be wetter as the winter snow melts. This can make for some brilliant & exciting water crossings, but can also cause some rather muddy riding conditions!

The mid-season riding months will usually give the ideal mix of blue skies and moderate temperatures, while the later months give the most spectacular blue skies but lower temperatures and higher chances of snowfall at the higher altitudes.

One thing everyone has to remember when embarking on a motorcycle tour in the Himalayas is: ‘These are the Himalayas”! Conditions can change quickly and often the weather statistics and weather reports will mean absolutely nothing. It’s all part of the adventure!

5 reasons to ride in the Himalayas

1. mind blowing scenery.

The scenery in the Himalayas is simply mind-blowing. You will be hard pushed to find motorcycle tours with such vast and awe inspiring landscapes, while simultaneously being incredibly diverse. You can spend the morning riding through rocky barren mountain passes with numerous hairpin turns, turn a corner and find yourself riding through lush tree lined valleys. This truly is an amazing part of the world which no one can afford to miss!

2. Interesting Culture

Be it India, Tibet or Nepal, the culture of the people in the Himalayas will always be an incredibly interesting part of your motorcycle holiday. Monasteries are a common sight on the hillsides, colourful prayer flags blow in the wind and brightly dressed monks stroll the streets spinning payer wheels. Whatever your religious beliefs, there is something very relaxing about witnessing the local cultures in the Himalayas.

3. Incredible Riding

Our Himalayan motorcycle tours are designed to give you the perfect mix of exciting riding and easy cruising. At times you’ll want to slow it down and just take it all in with some easy cruising. Other times you’ll want to get into a smooth rhythm as you wind your way down twisting roads that snake their way down valleys. Other times you’ll be up on the pegs navigating the rougher conditions. The Himalayas has it all and there’s never a dull moment!

4. Friendly Locals

One of our favourite things about motorcycle touring are the people we get to meet along the way. Riding motorcycles to remote regions of the Himalayas, we not only come across the locals but also a number of seasonal workers. Although we may not always be able to understand each other we love our roadside chats with the folk we meet along the way.

They don’t all have a lovely job herding goats though… wait until you see the manual labour that goes into building these roads! Now that is hard graft. Feel free to stop occasionally to hand those guys a pack of biscuits or a cigarette – they’ll be extremely grateful.

5. Amazing Cuisine

Indian curries, Tibetan momos, masala dosas, thukpa, flatbreads and chow mein – while the countries that make up the Himalayas all have their own national dishes, you’ll find it all merging together up in the mountains, providing an incredible selection of dishes. We simply love the food in these regions and we’re sure to give our riders the full culinary experience on all of our Himalayan motorcycle tours. Gulab jamun anyone?

2024 Royal Enfield Scram 411: Price, Specs, And Features

  • The 2024 Royal Enfield Scram 411 is a stylish yet affordable option for beginner motorcyclists looking for a reliable ride with easy handling.
  • With a focus on urban riding and off-road capabilities, the Scram 411 shares similarities with the Himalayan but offers a more versatile experience.
  • While lacking high-tech features, the Scram 411's rugged build, hardy design, and comfortable ride make it a great choice for navigating various road conditions.

While the all-new Himalayan 450 might soon replace the Himalayan 411, the 2024 Royal Enfield Scram 411 is alive, well, and thriving. A close cousin of the popular Himalayan dual-sport adventure bike on the roster of India-based motorcycle maker Royal Enfield , the Scram 411 is an easy ride. While the Royal Enfield Scram 44 shares the same drivetrain, frame, and gas tank as the Himalayan, it comes wearing different wheels, instruments, and a lower seat height. This lets it have more of an urban focus and makes it a great choice for anyone looking to enter the big, bad world of motorcycling.

After its 2022 debut, the Scram 411 has quickly risen in the ranks of sub-500cc motorcycles , making a name for itself as a no-frills, easy-to-handle motorcycle that also looks good. Here’s all you need to know about the 2024 Royal Enfield Scram 411 and why it might make you a great new ride.

All tech specs and information have been taken from the official Royal Enfield website.

The 12 Best Royal Enfield Motorcycles Ever

The 2024 royal enfield scram 411 is a street bike with an adventurous heart.

Short for Scrambler, the 2024 Royal Enfield Scram 411 makes for a smooth urban ride, with mild off-roading capabilities, enough to take on bad roads. It’s a basic, back-to-the-roots kind of motorcycle, the kind you are comfortable riding because it's light, easy to handle, and comes with all the tech you need. Basically, the Scram 411 makes for a great beginner motorcycle for all .

With the Scram 411, you get fuel injection and ABS brakes, so starting and stopping is painless. There’s also a small LCD info-panel inset on the digital speedometer with a smaller insert for GPS pointers, the latter of which needs to be connected to the Royal Enfield riding app.

That’s about it, though, and the Scram 411 comes without any ride modes, adjustable levers, cruise control, or other motorcycling luxuries. The 411cc engine is rather visceral, despite the 25-horsepower output, and comes simply built. With barely any muting of engine noise, it sounds like a vintage motorcycle with a more modern note and has little to no vibration. While it can reach speeds of 80mph, the Scram 411 is the most comfortable at around 60mph. Then again, Royal Enfield did not build it to win races.

2024 Royal Enfield Scram 411 Engine & Performance Specs

Royal enfield shotgun 650: 10 things we know so far, the scram 411 looks as good as it rides.

While the Royal Enfield Scram 411 isn't tech-loaded, it’s pretty stylish and comes in seven cool color options. It has great ride quality and feels steady on the road, while the combination of the fork and twin-shock suspension keeps most of the road imperfections contained. The frame supports the seamless ride, and there is much to be said about Royal Enfield buying the iconic frame design specialist Harris Performance in 2015.

That said, since most India-based motorcycle makers know that their bikes will be ridden hard daily, the Scram 411 is not a small bike. Its dimensions and curb weight make it a comfortable ride for two, though its lower seat height makes it comfortable for riders with a shorter stature as well.

Given the hustle and bustle of Indian roads, the Scram 411 is hefty enough to bear a few knocks and then some, with accent panels on either side of the tank to take the brunt in case it topples. That said, Royal Enfield motorcycles mostly come built heavily , with more metal than plastic, for added hardiness.

2024 Royal Enfield Scram 411 Suspension & Dimension Specs

Here's why the new royal enfield himalayan is a game changer, the scram 411 makes for an affordable, almost dual-adventure motorcycle.

At a $5,099 starting price, the 2024 Royal Enfield Scram 411 is a very affordable buy, especially if you want a motorcycle just to see if biking is the way ahead for you.

There’s a difference in the suspension between the much-loved Himalayan 411 and the Scram, which is why the former is the perfect mountain adv, but the Scram boasts a few abilities of its own. While the black-laced wheels are smaller than the 21-inches on the Himalayan, they come wearing the same 50/50 on-road/off-road tires as its tougher sibling. While this doesn’t mean that you can take the Scram to the highest motorable road (although it does boast the same tough Himalayan engine ), it means this motorcycle can navigate bad roads, rough patches, and a few forest roads with a more confident grip.

2024 Royal Enfield Scram 411 Tires & Brake Specs

That said, it's interesting to note the "Himalayan Scram 411" badging, with the Scram letting the Himalayan take a bow as its creator. Since it shares the Himalayan platform, the cool bit is that the Scram 411 can also wear the same adventure accessories and more, so there’s a lot that riders can do with this bike.

All The Upcoming 2024 Royal Enfield Motorcycles That We Know About

2024 royal enfield scram 411 vs rivals, prime scram 411 competitors: suzuki dr z400 sm and ktm 390 adventure.

When it comes to sub-500cc motorcycles, there is plenty of in-house competition that the Scram 411 faces. Besides the beefier Himalayan 411, a slew of 350cc motorcycles also make great first buys, namely, the Hunter 350 , Classic 350, and Meteor 350. Of course, these have a smaller engine, are built purely for urban rides, and cost a little less.

Look at other automakers, and there is the Honda CBR300R that aims at supersport thrills in an economy package with a 286cc engine. There’s also the Yamaha YZF-R3, a good commuter motorcycle with a 321cc engine that makes more than 40 hp. The Kawasaki Ninja 400 is another more powerful option , and for off-roading, there’s the KTM 390 series and the Suzuki DR Z400 SM.

It ultimately boils down to choice, but buyers need to remember that the USP of the Scram 411 is not its performance or speed but its rugged and hardy build. Royal Enfield makes the Scram 411 tough enough to handle anything and everything Indian roads can throw at it, so reliability is high as well. The lack of riding modes also means you are free to concentrate on just the ride instead of being involved in the technical aspects of motorcycling.

Where Are Royal Enfield Motorcycles Made, And Who Owns The Company Now?

Three Royal Enfield motorcycles

With the claim of being the oldest motorcycle brand in continuous production, the iconic Royal Enfield brand is more than 120 years old and is today best known for mid-sized bikes, including retro-styled cafe racers, cruisers, and tourers. The brand has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts over the past 20 years, after troubled decades and almost shutting down shop in 2000. The Royal Enfield brand was originally owned by The Enfield Cycle Company in Redditch, Worcestershire, England. Its first motorcycle was made in 1901, and the brand was also used for bicycles, quadricycles, stationary engines, and even lawnmowers. With the company's history in manufacturing precision parts for arms, the products featured the tagline "Made Like a Gun" in those early years.

As with many British manufacturers in the era, The Enfield Cycle Company played a role in producing equipment for the country during the two World Wars. During the first, the manufacturer supplied its Royal Enfield 770cc 6 hp V-twin motorcycles to the Allies. During World War II, Enfield made motorcycles and other products for military use , including the "Flying Flea," which referred to its 125cc Airborne motorcycles. Those bikes earned the nickname because they could be dropped by parachute behind enemy lines. Later on, the Royal Enfield Bullet was first introduced in 1932 and was initially offered in three variants: 250cc, 350cc, and 500cc. Its design has remained largely unchanged over the last 90 years and is today available as the Classic 350 or Bullet 350 in various markets.

Where are Royal Enfield motorcycles made?

So, where are the popular Royal Enfield bikes manufactured? Considering the brand name, it may be surprising to learn that they are produced in India. The company that owns the brand has three manufacturing plants in Chennai, and four CKD (completely knocked down) assembly plants in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Thailand. Royal Enfield offers about a dozen motorcycle models in 60 countries including India, the U.S., the United Kingdom, Australia, and Brazil. Nearly 825,000 Royal Enfield bikes were sold in FY2022-23, all in the mid-sized bike (250-750cc) segment.

Royal Enfield has eight models available in the U.S., namely the Super Meteor 650, Hunter 350, Scram 411, Classic 350 (also known as the Bullet 350), Himalayan 411, Meteor 350, Int 650, and the Continental GT 650. The company offers other models, such as the Shotgun 650 and New Himalayan 450, in markets such as the U.K. For about four years in the 1950s, Royal Enfield motorcycles were sold under the Indian Motorcycles brand name in the U.S., before other companies acquired the Indian brand.

Who owns Royal Enfield now?

The Royal Enfield brand is owned by Eicher Motors Limited, an Indian company that before the acquisition was best known for its tractor business, and is today also known for its commercial vehicle joint venture with Volvo. Post World War II, and after India won its independence from British rule in 1947, the country was looking for motorcycles for its police forces and army. It placed an order of 500 units of the 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet from The Enfield Cycle Company, and they were imported by Madras Motors, a private enterprise that had already been importing Royal Enfield, Norton, and Matchless bikes into the country since 1949.

Then, following an order for 800 units of Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles in 1955, The Enfield Cycle Company partnered with Madras Motors to assemble Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles in India, forming the company Enfield India — with a majority stake owned by the Indian company. Enfield India later received tooling from the British company to produce the entire motorcycle. The company continued producing Enfield-branded motorcycles in India for nearly 40 years, and it was acquired by Eicher Motors in 1994.

Meanwhile, The Enfield Cycle Company in England went defunct in 1971, with its Redditch factory closing in 1967, and finally, production ceased when the Upper Westwood factory closed in 1970. Soon after being acquired by Eicher Motors, Enfield India was renamed to Royal Enfield Motors. The company also began using Royal Enfield branding and started selling its motorcycles in the United Kingdom. Following a lawsuit in the U.K. in 1999, the U.K.'s Intellectual Property Office ruled it had no objection to the use of the Royal Enfield trademark by Eicher Motors.
