The history of Key Bridge, Baltimore’s engineering marvel of the 1970s

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore partially collapsed into the Patapsco River early Tuesday after a freighter crashed into it. The steel-arched bridge was considered an engineering feat when it was built in the 1970s.

Here’s what to know about the 47-year-old bridge, its history and its significance.

Baltimore bridge collapse

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship , sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water. Follow live updates and see photos from the scene .

How it happened: The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers recovered the bodies of two construction workers who died , while finding other vehicles trapped and probably containing the other victims, officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . The entire crew aboard the container ship Dali survived . First responders shut down most traffic on the four-lane bridge after the crew issued an urgent mayday call. It saved lives, Moore said.

Harrowing footage appears to show Russian forces torturing suspects in the Moscow concert hall terror attack — with one fed his own ear and another writhing in agony from electric shocks to his genitals – as senators warn ISIS-K could target Americans.

Footage circulated online appears to show members of the security forces cutting off the ear of one of the suspects in the attack that killed more than 130 people — and then stuffing it in his mouth, according to t he Guardian.

One of the suspects was later seen in court with a huge bandage covering his ear area.

Another appears to show security forces beating suspects with rifle butts and kicking one as he lay in the snow.

Photographs posted on Telegram also appeared to show one of the suspected terrorists with his pants down and a wire attached to his groin, Ukrainska Pravda reports.

The wire delivered 80 volts of electricity to the man’s genital area as water was poured on the suspect’s head to intensify the effects, according to a description provided by the Grey Zone Telegram Channel.

Some of the suspects were later seen in a Russian court Sunday showing clear signs of injury, including swollen faces and cuts and bruises.

One suspect, Mukhammadsobir Faizov, 19, was even brought into the courthouse in a wheelchair and seemed barely conscious throughout the entire proceeding.

He was attended by medics in court, and was wearing a hospital gown and pants, and was seen with multiple cuts.

Another suspect, Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, 30, was seen with a bandage around his ear, while a third entered the courthouse with a blindfold — and when authorities took off the blindfold, a black eye was clearly visible.

A court statement said Rachabalizoda and another suspect, Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, 32, pleaded guilty to participating in the terrorist attack.

Rachabalizoda, Mirzoyev, Faizov and Shamsidin Fariduni, 25, were arrested in connection with the terrorist attack on Saturday and were charged with committing a group terrorist attack resulting in the deaths of others, according to the Guardian.

They were caught in the southern Bryansk region, where authorities said they disabled their vehicle and then apprehended the suspects as they fled into a nearby forest.

Seven others were also detained on suspicion of involvement in the attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced over the weekend.

The Islamic State-Khorasanm also known as ISIS-K, took responsibility for the attack, sharing video showing gunmen in military uniforms shooting screaming civilians with automatic weapons as others ducked for cover at the Crocus City Hall, where Russian rock band Picnic was about to take the stage for a sold-out show.

Following the attack in Moscow, several US Republican senators said they were worried that the terror group could come to target Americans. 

“I think common sense tells you if they run a trafficking network of people that would most certainly use it to move operatives into the United States,”  Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) told ABC’s “This Week.”  

Rubio, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, added, “I’m not claiming there’s an imminent threat to the US, but I am saying that the border situation and the existence of that network is a threat to the United States. If they could do what they did in Moscow in the United States, they would do it in a heartbeat.”

Rubio’s concerns were echoed by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), who said that US citizens living overseas could be targeted by the ISIS affiliate. 

“We have millions of Americans who live or travel abroad throughout Europe and Asia embassy businesses, so I’m deeply worried that ISIS from Afghanistan will end up targeting Americans sooner rather than later,”  he told Fox News Sunday.

Putin tried to blame Ukraine, which furiously denied any involvement — while many experts believe it may have been a false-flag operation ordered by the Russian leader to justify his own ongoing violence.

Other footage shows the men firing at concertgoers at point-blank range below the venue’s entrance sign as bloodied bodies lay motionless on the ground.

Russian media reports said the assailants threw explosives, triggering a massive blaze at the hall. Video later showed flames and black smoke light up the night sky as scores of ambulances, fire trucks and riot police flocked to the chaotic scene. 

The suspects, all of whom are citizens of Tajikistan, face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

They were ordered on Sunday to be held in pre-trial custody until May 22.

US state politician misrepresents college basketball players as 'illegal invaders'

A republican politician from the us state of michigan is claiming he caught "illegal invaders" arriving at an airport in detroit. this is false; the photos show buses used to transport collegiate men's basketball teams and an aircraft that flew in the gonzaga university squad ..

"Happening right now. Three busses ( sic ) just loaded up with illegal invaders at Detroit Metro," says Matt Maddock, a Donald-Trump endorsed Michigan state representative, in a March 27, 2024 post on X. "Anyone have an idea where they're headed with their police escort?"

The post includes a photo of three white buses and another showing an Allegiant Airlines plane. Radio host Justin Barclay and Pete Hoekstra , chairman of the Michigan Republican Party , amplified it .

Migration across the US-Mexico is a central issue in the 2024 presidential election, which is likely to pit Trump against President Joe Biden in a rematch of the 2020 race. Republican governors in Texas and Florida have been busing -- and sometimes flying -- migrants to jurisdictions governed by Democrats, including New York City.

But the photos Maddock posted do not show undocumented immigrants descending on Detroit.

In reality, the transportation was arranged for collegiate men's basketball teams playing at the city's Little Caesars Arena as part of the NCAA Tournament known as "March Madness." The teams are seeking a spot in the Final Four, and eventually the national NCAA title.

The 64-team competition is down to just 16 schools, with Purdue University, the University of Tennessee, Creighton University and Gonzaga remaining in the bracket's Midwest region. The March 29 games include Purdue versus Gonzaga and Tennessee versus Creighton . 

All four teams arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) the evening of March 27, according to the Wayne County Airport Authority.

"The buses seen in a photograph circulating online were transporting the basketball teams and their respective staffs," the authority told AFP in a March 28 email.

The Allegiant plane shown in Maddock's other photo, meanwhile, was "carrying the Gonzaga basketball team from Spokane," airline spokesperson Hector Mejia told AFP in a March 28 email.

Photos and videos posted by the men's basketball team show the players and staff boarding an Allegiant aircraft. The only such plane that arrived March 27 at DTW came from Gonzaga's home of Spokane, according to Flightradar24 , a real-time flight tracking service (archived here , here and here ).

The  flight landed around 7:25 pm local time, less than an hour before Maddock posted his photos to X (archived here ).

Barrett Henderson, Gonzaga's assistant director of athletics and communications, confirmed to AFP that the school's team took an Allegiant plane to Detroit.

Henderson said in a March 28 email that the squad boarded three buses upon arrival, although he could not confirm they were the vehicles in Maddock's post. He said three other buses were stationed at the airport for another team when Gonzaga arrived.

None of the other teams competing in Detroit flew Allegiant, according to social media posts documenting their trips.

Purdue's squad appears to have traveled on a GlobalX plane that landed at approximately 8:39 pm, AFP determined by matching the aircraft in the team's posts with Flightrader24 data (archived here and here ).

Creighton and Tennessee flew  Avelo Airlines and Delta Airlines , respectively, on flights that appear to have arrived in Detroit a few hours earlier in the day (archived  here , here , here and here ).

Disappointing photos show what it's actually like to go on a cruise

• I took a seven-day voyage on one of the largest cruise ships in the world , my first cruise ever. 
• I found the reality of cruising didn't match my expectations from social media and promotional ads.
• I spent much of my time battling crowds, waiting in lines, and sitting on hot tour buses.

I booked my first-ever cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas in April 2022. The seven-day Caribbean voyage on a mega-ship took me round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to port stops in Honduras, Mexico, and the Bahamas. I expected breathtaking views of the world between relaxing swimming and sunbathing sessions.

But my experience didn't quite meet my expectations.

Instead, I sunbathed in a loud, crowded pool area when I was lucky enough to find a chair. I spent more time waiting in lines than I had anticipated, and I saw much of the world from behind other people's heads.

Here's an overview of the most disappointing aspects of my cruise, from getting to the port to sailing across the region

The disappointment started before I was even on the cruise.

Since I don't live near my cruise's departure city, my trip began with a flight and a budget hotel room near my departure port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

When I arrived at my port city's airport, I waited 45 minutes for a hotel shuttle to pick me up.

This was the first of many crowded bus rides during my trip. Looking back, I wish I had called a cab — especially since the next morning, I piled into a hot bus with several other cruise guests as I headed to the port.

There was a long line to get inside the cruise terminal, and I should have known by this point that I'd stand in many more lines during my cruise.

Inside the cruise terminal , there was another long line to get through security. While I waited, I chuckled to myself as I read signs that said, "Adventure begins here."

Once aboard the ship, I was excited to view the ocean as we sailed away, but I was blocked by tall, thick glass and couldn't find a place to stand.

My obstructed view of the ship leaving Fort Lauderdale made me feel as frustrated as standing behind tall patrons at a concert. 

The ship was so large that I got lost several times during my stay.

But I found the maps on each floor to be helpful.

As I explored the ship, I was surprised that even a mega-ship could feel overcrowded.

While people seemed to enjoy themselves, many communal decks looked and felt like crowded malls.

The outdoor decks had 19 pools, plunge pools, and whirlpools accessible to guests. These spaces were crowded throughout the day. And even though there were rules against saving chairs with towels, I saw plenty of people doing it, so finding a spot to relax was stressful.

A Royal Caribbean representative told Business Insider crew members might remove items from lounge chairs after 30 minutes. Still, they must also consider families and groups who may be in the pool or going to the restroom when enforcing rules like these and must use their best judgment.

There were crowds and lines virtually everywhere I went.

From the buffet to activities like water slides and mini-golf, I felt like I spent more time waiting in line than enjoying the ship. For example, I waited in line for three hours to play a round of laser tag that was less than 20 minutes long. 

At port stops, I waited in lines to go through security every time I left and returned to the ship. I found this less annoying than the other wait times since it made me feel safer.

The lines continued at each port, crowded with others excited to begin their tours.

I often had to battle through crowds just to find signs for my excursions.

It was exciting to explore new places at each stop, though some of this exploration was from the window of another hot bus.

A Royal Caribbean representative told BI the cruise line worked with local tour operators for its excursions, so air conditioning standards varied.

And when I was finally doing the cool thing I booked, like walking across a suspension bridge amid the treetops, my view was sometimes blocked once more by everyone else who booked the tour, too.

I hoped to capture an empty image of this majestic jungle bridge, but it wasn't possible without losing my tour crew. 

According to a crew member I overheard, roughly 5,000 other people were aboard the ship, so I understand why the cruise felt so crowded.

I think that if I were to book a less crowded cruise next time, I might enjoy it more.

Baltimore Key Bridge collapse live updates: Largest crane on Eastern Seaboard to help clear channel

The cargo ship struck Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday.

A cargo ship crashed into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, causing a near-total collapse of the span and halting vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore.

Six construction workers are believed to have fallen from the collapsing bridge into the frigid waters of the Patapsco River below. The bodies of two of the victims have been recovered so far, while four remain missing and are presumed dead, officials said.

The container ship Dali struck Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, partially collapsing the bridge , officials in Maryland said.

A local pilot was at the helm of the ship at the time, Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said.

The crash appeared to be accidental , not intentional, officials said.

Two construction workers were rescued and six went missing in the immediate aftermath of the collapse, officials said. The bodies of two of the victims were recovered from the water on Wednesday amid ongoing search and recovery efforts, while four remain missing and are presumed dead, officials said.

Three cranes from the U.S. Navy have arrived in Baltimore to remove submerged portions of the bridge, and a fourth crane is set to arrive next week, the Navy said.

The Chesapeake has a 1,000-ton lift capacity, the Ferrell has a 200-ton lift capacity and the Oyster Bay has a 150-ton lift capacity, the Navy said.

"Work will focus on disassembling and removing the bridge section by section. The disassembled pieces will be lifted onto barges, which will then be transported away," the Navy said in a statement. "An additional 12 crane and support vessels to include tugs, survey, dive and crew boats, are in the mobilization process and will arrive to Baltimore in the coming days."

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore on Friday outlined several goals in the aftermath of the bridge collapse, describing the scope of the disaster as a freight nearly the size of the Eiffel Tower "with the Key Bridge resting on top of it," and shipping containers "ripped in half as if they were papier-maché."

Moore told reporters the Unified Command continues to focus on recovery efforts to help bring "closure" to victims’ families.

He said as soon as conditions in the water are safe enough, divers will go back in the water to look for the four victims who are still missing.

Another priority is clearing the blocked channel, he said, stressing that the Port of Baltimore must reopen for the "health" of the Maryland economy and U.S. economy.

Moore also promised to rebuild the bridge, and to take care of everyone impacted by the crisis, including the families, workers, businesses and first responders.

Gov. Moore: 'We are going to rise to meet this moment'

President Joe Biden plans to visit Baltimore next week with Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, he told reporters on Friday.

The Biden administration approved $60 million in emergency relief funds for rebuilding the bridge hours after receiving the request from the state of Maryland, the White House said Thursday.

"The federal emergency funds we're releasing today will help Maryland begin urgent work, to be followed by further resources as recovery and rebuilding efforts progress," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement. "President Biden has been clear: the federal government will do everything it takes to help rebuild the bridge and get the Port of Baltimore back open."

The Chesapeake 1000 crane -- capable of lifting roughly 2.2 million pounds at a time -- arrived at the bridge at 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the bridge response Unified Command.

The piece of steel on the bow of the ship weighs roughly 9 million pounds.

Engineers will need to figure out exactly how and where to cut the steel to ensure no further danger will be posed to construction crews or the ship, the Unified Command said. Once the engineers determine where and how to cut the steel, they will begin to remove it from the ship in multiple pieces, the Unified Command said.

The Unified Command is made up of agencies including the Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Maryland State Police.
