Jackson Hole & Grand Teton N.P. Visitor Guide

Grand teton scenic float trips: the essentials.

A Grand Teton scenic float trip glides down 10 of the most beautiful river miles in the world and represents a unique vantage point to view the Tetons and all sorts of wildlife at close range. Although permitted boaters can float the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park,  we recommend that you book a trip with one of Jackson Hole's seasoned outfitters, as their knowledge of this advanced section of the river and surrounding terrain will ensure a safe and relaxing trip. If you love photo ops where no one else is around, amazing up-close wildlife encounters and activities that work for the whole family, a scenic float is the way to go!

Quick Facts

  • River trips take place from mid-May through September.
  • Duration:  Allocate 2.5 to 3 hours total, with between 1 to 1.5 hours on the river. Trip times adjust according to the river’s water flow and length of daylight.
  • Cost: Around $100 for adults; reduced rates for children.
  • Where: From Deadman's Bar to Moose Landing in Grand Teton National Park.
  • Ages: Ages  6 and up. Check with your outfitter.
  • Intensity: Low. Unlike a whitewater trip, passengers are not expected to paddle.
  • Highlights: Scenery, wildlife spotting and getting to learn more about Grand Teton National Park and the Snake River.

Best for ...

Those who don’t necessarily want to experience the rough and tumble—and wetness!—of a whitewater trip but still desire to get out on the Snake River to see Jackson Hole and its environs by water. If you're in the mood for something more contemplative and would like to be able to get some great shots of the Tetons and (hopefully) some stellar wildlife shots as well, a Grand Teton scenic float trip is likely more your ticket. Children of varying ages are welcome.

What are my options?

Your trip will generally last around 2-1/2 to 3 hours and cover the 10-mile stretch of river in Grand Teton National Park from Deadman’s Bar to Moose Village, near Dornan’s.

There's no need to worry about over-exerting yourself during a scenic float.  Unlike a whitewater trip, passengers need not paddle.  The guide acts as rudder and oarsman the entire time.

Due to the popularity of scenic float trips in the summer, we recommend that you make reservations ahead of time. Bad weather conditions can occasionally cause trip cancellations.

What's included?

Your outfitter will provide transportation from Moose Village to the launch site at Deadman’s Bar as well as life jackets, plus interpretive guide services on the fauna, feather-friends and flora that live in and along the Snake River.

Rain ponchos will be provided in case of sudden showers.

When's a good time to go?

Trips are offered from mid-May through September at several time slots per day in peak floating season. If you've got a busy day planned, be sure to set aside 3 hours from door to door for your river expedition—that way you won't be late to your next activity!

Grand Teton National Park is home to the greatest variety of wildlife in the 48 contiguous states and the best time to see a lot of wildlife is on an early morning or late afternoon/sunset float.

What should I bring?

You will stay dry during your scenic float.  The water moves lazily and most outfitters equip their boats with splash guards. For the cooler temperatures of the early morning or an evening float, a jacket, fleece or thick sweater is suggested.

Bring a camera to catch dramatic snapshots of wildlife, as well as the varying views of the Teton skyline.  Binoculars can also come in handy for identifying high-flying birds and far-off critters.

The Last Word

Floating 10 miles down the Snake River past the Teton Range in Grand Teton National Park should be on every Jackson Hole visitor’s to-do list.

If you decide on this laid-back approach to river trips, we’d like to congratulate you.  Floating down the Snake with the Tetons looming over your shoulder is a meditative experience that is “awesome” in the truest sense of the word.    This is a great activity for groups and can be fitted around your other plans. It is also very safe —most of the risk lies in getting a sunburn!

Scenic floats also provide a chance to learn more about Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park and the iconic Snake River from an experienced guide while enjoying the unmatched scenic beauty.

customer testimonials

Teton Expeditions and it’s entire crew are looking forward to meeting you so you can join our satisfied customers list. If you had fun please leave a review as a future guide to all who are seeking some outdoor excitement and fun.

I have gone rafting with Teton Expeditions for the past three years, and have had immensely enjoyed myself each time. The staff was very friendly and made the trip a blast ! I had the opportunity to go with my favorite guide, Captain Ron, on two of my trips, and he made sure to offer me the “wettest seat” on the raft ! I loved it !! Right up front where I got to see what to expect….big rapids ! I had the chance to meet the owner, David Tibbitts, and it shows that he really loves his job because of all the effort he puts forth to make sure everyone is happy, and comfortable. Teton Expeditions really makes you feel like you are part of “their” family when you go rafting with them. I am going to do the combo trip next year, so I can enjoying the relaxing scenic part of the trip, as well as the whitewater rapid part…I can’t wait ! Keep up the great work !

I highly recommend Teton Expeditions. Dave is excellent to work with and so accommodating. We’ve gone with our entire family from 6 to 76 and had a blast. The scenery is beautiful, the guides are great, and the water is chilly!

Teton Expeditions is Outstanding

In august, we had the pleasure of rafting with Teton Expeditions. When we arrived, we had no idea what type of trip we wanted to take. After talking with their friendly office staff, we chose the scenic portion of the river. Our guide Krystal was extremely knowledgeable of the river and the area and answered the many questions that we had. The lunch they provide on the river was perfect. On top of the many bald eagles we saw the highlight of the trip was actually seeing a herd of elk cross the river! If we ever have the fortune to make it back to Jackson, rafting with Teton Expeditions will be top on our list!

Simply the Best

We go all over the country whitewater rafting and Teton Expeditions was our favorite hands down! From the moment we walked into the door we felt welcome!! Every person that we came in to contact that is employeed through Teton Expeditions was friendly and knowable! My advise to everyone that wants to go rafting in Jackson, you should just go with the best and That is with no aruguments (at least for my family) Teton Expeditions!!!

Teton Expeditions, Just writing to thank you guys for a great float trip early last week. My  family & I went out on the dinner float last Monday (I think) and had a  great time. We were on the raft that saw 4 moose, 5+ eagles, and a bunch of  other animals. Our guide, Ryan (or maybe Brian? Not 100% sure – sorry) was  really great and very knowledgeable. Made the trip that much better. I posted a  5 star review for you guys on  Trip Advisor , and wanted to shoot you some photos  you can put on your website if you want – our guide asked me to send some of  the moose when I got back. I’ve attached a few pictures for you guys. Thanks again, and keep up the great work.

Recommended Gear

You will mostly stay dry during the float trip, but there is a possibility of a few minor splashes throughout. This is a great trip to bring your camera, some water, and some snacks for you to enjoy while taking in all the beautiful scenery. All necessary safety gear including life jackets will be provided for you. In case there is rain, we will also provide you with ponchos.

Whitewater:

Unlike our float trips, you will be getting wet during your rafting adventure! We recommend quick-dry clothes or swimsuits and to avoid cotton. Wetsuits are great for colder days, and rain jackets are helpful for rainy days. Shoes are required on all of our trips, there is a walk back to the bus after your trip, and you’ll be glad to have them. We do not recommend bringing your camera because it will get wet, there are two professional companies that take pictures and videos at the largest rapids.

Dry clothes, snacks, and water can be left on the bus for your ride back to our office, and there will be changing rooms available at the end of the trip. Be sure to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water prior to your tip. Safety gear and equipment will be provided to you for your adventure!

Cancellation Policy

Teton Whitewater has a 48-hour cancellation policy. If you notify us of your intent to cancel the booked trip outside 48 hours of departure, then we offer a 100% refund. For groups of 10 or more, we have a 1-week cancellation policy. Anyone that cancels before these times will receive a 100% refund. We are limited by the National Forest Service as to how many people we can bring down the Snake River on one trip. If you book a spot on a trip, we are no longer able to sell your seat, therefore, if you cancel within the time of our cancellation policy, we can only refund the money if we can find people to fill the spots you have vacated.

Reviews From Our Guests

“We had the most amazing experience with both the scenic and whitewater rafting adventure! Our scenic guide, Jake, was knowledgeable and kind. Our whitewater raft guide, Spencer, was totally funny, knowledgeable, and personable. An awesome trip indeed!!! Totally recommend.”

Veronica Nelson

“I am not a person who regularly writes reviews, but our family of four had the most amazing experience with Teton Whitewater. 100% of the staff members we encountered were exceptionally friendly and helpful. You can tell that the employees care about making sure the rafting experience is fun and exciting for everyone. The bathrooms and rented wetsuits were clean and in good condition. I had some questions before the trip and my emails were always answered within 15 minutes of when I sent them. Our guide, Spencer, was outstanding. It was obvious that he was experienced and knowledgeable. Our raft had a great time getting to know each other and Spencer made sure he got to know each of us, as well. As we drove away after the trip my two teenagers said that this experience was the coolest thing we have ever done on a trip. Thank you all for the great family experience that will last a lifetime.”

Abigail Turgeon

“Most fun I have had in years! Awesome adventure with the best staff imaginable. I could not have been happier with my experience.”

“Just an all around great experience! The staff is so kind and friendly. I felt like I was among friends from the moment I walked in the door. The float was beautiful. The bus ride had great music. I felt like safety was a high priority throughout the entire event. Everyone in our group left with a smile and some incredible memories. Thanks so much for an awesome river experience!!”

John Parker

“Super fun! The guides make it such a fun and different experience from some of the other companies in town! This is the one to use for sure!”

Tanner Pursley

Frequently asked questions, how early should i book my trip.

We encourage you to make your booking as soon as possible just to make sure you secure your spot!

The larger your group or family, the earlier you should book. For groups less than 10 people you can call and cancel and get a full refund as long as you do so at least 48 hours (two days) before your trip. For groups over 10 people, the same rule applies except you must call and cancel at least one week before your trip.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

For Scenic trips you shouldn’t get wet and normal casual clothes are encouraged, it’s always a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater as well. Your feet might get wet so please keep that in mind and be sure to choose appropriate footwear. Scenic trips include complimentary water as well as blankets and ponchos in case of inclement weather. Feel free to bring some snacks as well

For Whitewater trips, swimsuits and sturdy footwear are encouraged for this trip, you might even want to consider renting wetsuits or booties from our office to help you stay warm!

WHAT CLASS OF RAPIDS ARE ON THE SNAKE RIVER?

On the official Class I – Class V rapids scale, the Snake River is classified as a Class II. This means our stretch of river is an intermediate rating and is great for all rafters!

Be aware that high or low water flows can change river conditions and the experience you might have. Stay informed, and plan your trip accordingly. Our safety record is top-notch, and we focus on mitigating risk, and always put safety first.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITEWATER TRIPS AND SCENIC TRIPS?

Our scenic trip is a 13 mile Wilson Scenic float. It’s a beautiful stretch of the Snake River with typically 8 to 10 people on one scenic boat. The Wilson float is great for seeing bald eagles, moose, and other wildlife and scenery!

Our 8-mile whitewater rafting trip includes splashy rapids like Big Kahuna, Lunch Counter, Ropes, and Champagne, so you are sure to get tons of splashes and have a lot of fun!

Both trips include an experienced and trained guide, ask them whatever you want! Both scenic and whitewater trips are amazing and by far the most fun you’ll have in Jackson Hole!

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

For groups less than 10 people cancellation is allowed up to 48 hours before your trip day and time, for groups of 10 or more people cancellation is allowed up to one week before your trip day and time. Anything canceled after these times will not be eligible for a refund.

The Best Scenic Float Trip on the Snake River: Everything you need to know

best scenic floats on the snake river

Life can move fast. So fast that magical moments can slip by without appreciation. When you feel like everything is too fleeting, choosing an activity that slows life down can bring everything back into perspective. That’s when you need to book a Grand Teton scenic float . Steadily following the soft current past dense forest trees and stunning mountain range views, it’s impossible not to feel and appreciate the magic of the Wild West. With an expert guide to help you connect to the surrounding scenery, you will have more than enough time to sit back, relax in comfortably padded chairs and appreciate every moment of the trip.  Are you ready to learn the ins and outs of the best scenic float trip on the Snake River? Here is everything you need to know before you book a Teton float trip.

best scenic float trip on the snake river

What is a Scenic Float Trip ?

Our Grand Teton Float Trip guides you through one of the most beautiful rivers in the West, with Grand Teton National Park views as far as the eye can see. With lush foliage running rampant along the river’s shore and several opportunities to spot exciting wildlife, you’ll find something stunning at every turn.

What is the difference between a Teton Float Trip and a Whitewater Rafting Trip?

Where rafting trips boast raucous water and exhilarating fun, scenic float trips focus on the slower and more delicate parts of the river. Instead of navigating rapids, guests on scenic floats can appreciate the scenery, listen to stories from the guide and even take stunning photos of the surroundings.

Who can go on a Scenic Float Trip ?

Thanks to the calm nature of a scenic float, this excursion is great for people of all ages. We can take children as young as four for a day on the river.

Where does the Teton Scenic Float Tour Take you?

Our float trips take you through one of the most popular sections of the Snake River. We cover about 13 miles of winding river, but it’ll only take a few moments to understand why this river is so special. The area between the pickup and dropoff points is almost entirely wilderness, so you can easily get lost in the beauty of untouched nature.

What to expect on a Grand Teton Float Trip

Our scenic float trips last about 3 hours at normal water levels and 3.5 hours during times of lower water levels. During the float, you can expect:

  • Stunning views – Our floats give you a front-row seat to the best views of the Snake River and Gros Ventre Mountain Ranges, all with the Grand Tetons National Park in the distance.
  • Comfort – We are Jackson’s only scenic float tour company with custom high-back cushioned chairs. These chairs paired with our Yeti blankets, binoculars, and ponchos make for the ultimate comfort ride.
  • Wildlife sightings – You will see some bald eagles, osprey, herons and mergansers on sections of the river. If you’re lucky, you may see some larger wildlife as well – the river ecosystem is also home to herds of elk, mule deer, and moose.
  • Interesting info about the area – Our guides live and breathe the region, so they have endless stories, facts and discussions about the Snake River and the surrounding area to share.

Jackson Hole Float Trips in Spectacular Grand Teton

A view of Grand Teton from where most people begin floating the Snake River

Grand Teton was one of my favorite national parks long before I actually visited. There’s just something so mesmerizing about those distinctly rugged, craggy peaks.

As soon as we started planning a Bozeman > Big Sky > Yellowstone National Park > Jackson trip, I began researching Jackson Hole float trips.

Don’t get me wrong: There are many heavy-hitting national parks in this country. Heck, there are several heavy-hitting national parks in the western US alone! There are the magical canyons of Zion , Yosemite’s iconic Half Dome , the remote wilderness of Glacier…we could go on and on.

But for me, none of them hold a candle to the Tetons. Well, okay, maybe Glacier… Anyway, needless to say, finding the best Snake River float trip was high on my bucket list!

The Snake River and Grand Teton, where Jackson Hole float trips operate

Typical views on the best Jackson Hole float trips

As I started researching things to do in Grand Teton National Park, I remembered seeing photos of people on the water directly in front of the Tetons . I had no idea what that body of water was at the time, but I knew I needed to be there.

I quickly learned that the pictures I saw were of people on Jackson Hole float trips. As it turns out, a scenic Snake River float trip is widely considered the thing to do .

We usually avoid “touristy” attractions, preferring to explore on our own, but when in Rome, right? At least, when Rome happens to be insanely beautiful Jackson Hole.

My quest to find the best Jackson Hole float trips was a bit overwhelming at first. There are dozens of outfitters and tour companies in Jackson Hole, all promising the best Grand Teton float trips.

Almost all of them have wonderful reviews, but I noticed huge price disparities and distinct differences in people’s trip photos. Many — like ours — included head-on views of the Grand Tetons , but others, well, didn’t.

In the midst of obsessing over hundreds of Tripadvisor reviews, I finally figured out that only a few Jackson Hole float trips actually operate inside Grand Teton National Park . Aha!

An aerial view of several people enjoying a Snake River float trip on a bend in the river

According to the National Park Service , only “authorized concessionaires” can take guests on Jackson Hole float trips within the boundaries of GTNP . The major difference between authorized concessionaires and other outfitters is their approved routes.

To put it plainly, it’s a tremendous difference .

Authorized concessionaires run their Grand Teton float trips on a 10-mile section beginning at Dead Man’s Bar and ending in Moose Landing . You’re inside the national park enjoying head-on, panoramic views of the Tetons the entire time. I can’t imagine a Snake River float trip any other way!

Can you think of any things to do in Grand Teton National Park that could possibly be better?!

The other best Snake River float trip outfitters operate their tours on a stretch just south of GTNP, through mostly private land. It’s beautiful — this is Jackson Hole, after all — but it just doesn’t compare.

Eight companies are listed as authorized concessionaires for Jackson Hole float trips, but several are private guest ranches. I consistently came across three names in my research:

After agonizing over more reviews (admittedly, I’m that girl — I don’t know how I survived before Yelp or TripAdvisor!), I settled on Triangle X float trips .

Triangle X Ranch has been offering the Snake River float trip for over 50 years, their reviews are near-perfect , and they offer both sunrise and sunset floats. In case you don’t know this about me, watching sunrises and sunsets from as many different places as possible is one of my “things.”

Looking down on bends in the river that the best Snake River float trips travel

To be fair, I’m sure we would have had a wonderful experience on any Grand Teton float trip. At the same time, I can’t imagine anyone doing a better job than Triangle X float trips . Does that make sense?!

Our Snake River float trip was about three hours total. A Triangle X Ranch guide met us at the endpoint, then drove us to the starting point, about 15 minutes away. This way, our vehicle was right there waiting for us when we got off the boat .

We had the absolute best Snake River float trip guide. He’s a seasoned angler and a 20-plus-year Jackson native, so he was a wealth of knowledge.

Between expertly steering our raft and telling us when the best photo ops were coming up, he told us about the Tetons’ geology and taught us how to identify juvenile bald eagles.

Fun fact : they don’t get their signature white heads until adulthood. He also explained how mighty and “advanced” the Snake River is, even in the more calm section. In fact, on our Jackson Hole scenic float he pointed out a channel that wasn’t there just a few hours earlier!

Triangle X float trips generally run from mid-May to late September . Summer weather in Jackson Hole can be unpredictable, so wear layers .

You will not ( **should not ) get wet during your Snake River float trip. I wore leggings, a light long-sleeved top, North Face fleece jacket, Chacos, and a beanie. Halfway through, I ditched my jacket and hat. We paid $159 for two of us, plus a $40 tip — money very well spent.

If you’re looking for things to do in Grand Teton National Park, a Snake River float trip with Triangle X should be at the top of your list. They also offer guided fishing trips and although we didn’t stay at the Triangle X Ranch this trip, we got a sneak peek and it is to die for .

Our Snake River float trip was by far one of our favorite things to do in Grand Teton National Park . We hope you enjoy yours too! Don’t forget to pin this post for planning your own Jackson Hole float trips!

Oh my gosh this looks like so much fun! I’ve been to Big Sky, Yellowstone, and the Tetons – but it was in the winter, with very little time. When I go back i’ll keep this in mind- this is right up our alley!
