POB's Notes and Thoughts: Axe Euro Tour (California Club vs. Hoopsfix)

by Patrick O'Brien | Aug 12, 2022 | Event Coverage , Featured , Game Reports , News | 0 comments

axe european tour

We continue to track and watch prospects from all around the country, this time tuning in to Axe Euro Tour which brought the CBC (California Basketball Club) against Hoopsfix.  Getting a chance to watch a variety of all ages, here are some of the notes that we took about what we saw, as Hoopsfix was able to secure the 81-74 victory over California Club.

  • 2023 Sultan Adewale has been strong early on. A 6’8 forward has been making plays and showing his ability to operate in a variety of ways. His recruitment has really taken off.
  • 2023 Bronny James (CBC) has really improved with his overall feel for the game. Really like his decision-making and pace, knowing when to attack and get downhill, but also seeing the floor. Continuing to make those necessary strides in his game.
  • 2023 6’7 Michael Belle has played well so far today.' He is showing that he can use his size at 6’7, moving well and creating scoring opportunities.
  • 2023 Latrell Davis has been strong with his play today. The 6’3 guard has been strong with his handles and ability to get downhill to finish.
  • Been impressed with 2024 6’10 Majok Choul and what he has provided on both sides. Great size, active around the basket, on the glass… Interesting big man to watch.
  • Quinn Ellis has such a smooooooth game!! Really like what I’ve seen from him. Great pace, reads the floor well, and has a confident pull-up game from multiple levels.' Really like what I’ve seen from the 6’4 guard.
  • Like what I’ve seen from 2025 6’6 Bryce Cofield today. Obviously finishing strong at the rim but I like his blend of length, his energy, and his ability to make plays on both sides.
  • Been impressed with the flashes that 2023 6’8 Jimmy Oladokun (CBC) has shown today. Plays hard, is active in the paint, and shows flashes of his ability to finish around the basket but also make smart decisions. Uses his length well.

Animal Collective axe UK/European tour dates

"Inflation, currency devaluation, bloated shipping and transportation costs" were cited among the reasons for the cancellation

Animal Collective have pulled the plug on their forthcoming UK and European tour, citing “inflation, currency devaluation, bloated shipping and transportation costs”.

The US band were due to kick off their outing on 2 November in Ireland, with dates in Brighton, Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow and London before moving on to Europe.

Last night (10 October) the quartet issued a lengthy statement saying they are “choosing not to take the risk to our mental and physical health with the economic reality of what that tour would have been”.

“We simply could not make a budget for this tour that did not lose money even if everything went as well as it could,” the statement read.

“We have always been the kind of people to persevere through the difficult times and get on stage unless our health prevented it… we hope you understand and that you know we would not make a choice like this lightly.”

“We are choosing not to take the risk to our mental and physical health with the economic reality of [the] tour”

Currency devaluation is a growing concern in the touring industry and was noted in a recent IQ  interview with AEG Presents UK chief Steve Homer.

“One of the biggest things that’s causing us concern is the pound-to-dollar rate at the moment [the pound hit a record low against the dollar last month but has since rallied 10%],” he said. “We were almost on parity, which has not been something we’ve been familiar with for a long, long time. And it’s really biting in terms of artists touring over here – it becomes far more expensive for them to do it and it’ll be interesting to see how that impacts going forward.

Animal Collective’s statement comes after a slate of tour cancellations from Santigold ,  Arlo Parks ,  Shawn Mendes ,  Sam Fender , Russ,  Wet Leg , Disclosure ,  Placebo , alt-J,  Pale Waves and Anthrax, all of whom cited mental health and/or logistical difficulties as the reason.

At the same time, huge tour announcements are stacking up for 2023 , with Pink, Depeche Mode, Iron Maiden, Lizzo, The 1975 and Dead & Company among the latest artists to confirm major tours.

Aerosmith axe European 2022 tour due to COVID-19

Share with :.

Aerosmith have axed their European 2022 tour due to the "uncertainty" of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Steven Tyler and co were due to hit the road in June and July, but have taken the decision to call off the gigs because of the "continued presence of COVID restrictions and other issues", and to safeguard their fans and crew.

In a statement issued to their social media pages, the 'Sweet Emotion' rockers said: “It is with deep regret we must announce that our European Tour, scheduled to take place in June and July 2022, has been canceled.

“We have continued to monitor the ongoing COVID situation, and with the related uncertainty around travel logistics and the continued presence of COVID restrictions and other issues, it has become clear that it will not be possible to go ahead with our summer shows in the region.

“The health, safety and well-being of our fans is our number one priority.

“We will be back to rock out with everyone and we hope to have some exciting news to announce soon. (sic)"

The rock legends had already postponed the shows, which were originally due to take place in 2020, twice before.

In a previous statement, they said: “Due to current conditions and for the safety of our fans, the 2021 European Tour has been rescheduled to 2022.

“Please stay tuned for more information regarding the new dates or contact your point of purchase. All tickets will be valid for new dates.”

The concerts were to follow their 'Deuces Are Wild' Las Vegas residency at Park MGM’s Park Theater, the last performance of which was on February 15, 2020.

Meanwhile, guitarist Joe Perry previously said he'd like to record a new album with Aerosmith "when the time is right".

The 71-year-old musician said he was feeling inspired to make new music with the group - also including Joey Kramer, Brad Whitford and Tom Hamilton - after his time in the studio with his Hollywood Vampires' bandmates Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp working on their 2019 LP 'Rise'.

He said at the time: "I had just finished working on my last solo album [before the new Hollywood Vampires album], so I had been in the studio for the three or four months before we started on the Vampires record.

"So I was already rolling in the studio. It doesn't take much to get me going -- I love to record. So, when the time is right, Aerosmith will come around to do another record."

Aerosmith's last studio album was 2012's 'Music from Another Dimension!'.

Budget latest: Braverman joins Tory critics of announcements - and says her 'worst fears' look like coming true

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has delivered his budget, announcing measures like a national insurance cut and scrapping the non-dom tax status. Follow live analysis and reaction here in the Politics Hub.

Wednesday 6 March 2024 21:05, UK

  • Budget 2024: All the main announcements
  • Hunt denies 'last throw of the dice' before election
  • Tories want to 'eliminate' national insurance after 2p cut
  • PM did not take part in decision to scrap non-dom status
  • Braverman criticises budget - and her 'worst fears' becoming real
  • Sky News Daily:  Was that a budget for a May election?
  • Beth Rigby:  A safety-first budget despite having nothing to lose
  • Voters Panel: 'Great vote loser' fails to impress 2019 Tory backers
  • Live reporting by Ben Bloch and (earlier)  Emily Mee

 Here are all Jeremy Hunt's headline budget announcements:

  • National insurance cut by 2p in April - from 10% to 8%;
  • Freeze on alcohol duty extended until February 2025;
  • 5p cut to fuel duty to continue for 12 months;
  • Abolishment of non-dom status - a Labour idea that will raise £2.7bn a year;
  • High Income Child Benefit Charge threshold raised from £50,000 to £60,000;
  • Introduction of British ISA, allowing extra £5,000 investments in UK;
  • VAT registration threshold for businesses upped from £85,000 to £90,000;
  • £1m towards memorial for Muslims who died in two World Wars;
  • Repayment period doubled to 24 months for new budgeting advance loans for low-income people;
  • £90 charge for obtaining debt relief order abolished;
  • Household Support Fund kept at current level for six months;
  • £45m for medical charities, including £3m for Cancer Research UK;
  • Nearly £6bn for the NHS, including £3.4bn for "outdated" IT systems;
  • £75m for violence reduction units and "hotspot policing";
  • £105m over next four years to build 50 special free schools;
  • Introduction of excise duty on vaping products and one-off increase in tobacco duty;
  • Reduction of higher capital gains tax rate on property from 28% to 24%.

Our political correspondent Serena Barker-Singh runs through the main points below:

Our economics and data editor Ed Conway  says the UK remains in "negative territory", with people still paying more in tax than ever before.

In a historical context, he says the budget is not as wide as usual, being one of the lowest for any chancellor in a long time.

In the video below, he breaks down all the main announcements and what they mean for you:

Part of the budget was a promise from Jeremy Hunt to "help small businesses", which he said is "close to my own heart".

He pledged £200m of funding to extend the Recovery Loan Scheme as it transitions to the Growth Guarantee Scheme.

And on VAT, he said he will increase the registration threshold by £5,000, which will "bring tens of thousands of businesses out of paying VAT altogether".

But  Harp Chatha , director of a property rental agency, tells The UK Tonight that the Treasury "will only suffer" and questioned where the money will come from to fill the gap.

He dismisses the £5,000 threshold rise, saying "it won't make a great deal of difference" to small businesses like his.

Rochelle Siviter , a special educational needs consultant, says the chancellor has "mis-sold the VAT matter".

She says it won't make any difference to many small businesses because they are already registered to pay VAT.

Rochelle has also done the maths and calculated that the threshold rise per month is just £416 extra in turnover, which "doesn't seem to make any particular sense".

"Should we be grateful? I don't feel very grateful for that I'm afraid."

On The UK Tonight , we are hearing from three members of our Voters Panel in the target seat of Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes ( read more on the Target Towns project here ).

We start by asking for their reactions to today's budget.

Rochelle Siviter , a special educational needs consultant, tells Sarah-Jane Mee there was nothing in the budget that made her jump for joy.

"I found it a disappointing budget given that we've got a general election coming up."

She says she has more concerns about the content of the budget than she is happy about other measures.

She feels the measures to help small businesses have not matched the government's rhetoric, but she is "slightly happy" there is help around childcare, although it appears "negligible".

Sarah Stook , a writer, says she is "generally quite cynical when it comes to politics" so was not expecting much.

But she goes on: "I don't feel like it was a budget for any age, I don't think it was a budget for my generation or younger, or particularly for my parents' generation."

She was expecting "more of a giveaway", and felt it was quite "restrained".

"Nothing particularly, I think, would help me personally, or perhaps any voters who are subject to changing their minds."

Harp Chatha , director of a property rental agency, labels the national insurance cut a "token gesture", saying taxpayers are "being lied to".

She says the pledge to abolish national insurance entirely is "just to get voters on the side of the Tory party", and the Treasury will suffer.

"Where will they find further funds to fill the coffers?" he questions.

There was good news for parents today, or some parents at least, with the chancellor raising the tax threshold on child benefits.

It's going up from £50,000 to £60,000 - but that only benefits higher earners, so what do the people in our Target Towns of Grimsby and Cleethorpes make of it?

Our national correspondent Tom Parmenter has been speaking to voters in the area today:

Tonight's edition of Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge  has now concluded.

We are continuing to discuss the budget and what it means for you on The UK Tonight right now, but you can scroll down for all the key moments and highlights from the Politics Hub.

Here are some final thoughts from our political editor Beth Rigby .

"We always talk about Keir Starmer going for safety first," she says, but with Labour currently 20 points ahead in the polls he has got "a lot to lose".

Her takeaway from the budget is that when you're 20 points behind, like the Conservatives, "you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain".

"I think Tory MPs might be sitting on their hands, but privately they might have their head in their hands thinking 'we are facing electoral oblivion at the moment'," she says.

Many will likely feel the chancellor hasn't given them anything to fight with.

Therefore, Beth says this is a "safety first budget" - but that in itself carries a lot of risk.

As you may be aware, Sky News has partnered with YouGov to hear the views of an online community of 2019 Conservative voters ahead of the general election.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates  says: "These are the voters that matter to Conservative headquarters and Labour HQ."

We are hearing first from voters less likely to vote Tory, and one says the budget "certainly won't help the cause" and played into Labour's hands by not being "bold enough".

Another says it has made him "less likely to vote Conservative", and a third says it is "time for them to go".

Watch their verdicts below - along with Sam's analysis:

Next, we ask Pat McFadden if Labour will stick to the government's spending plans laid out today for beyond the election.

He replies: "You don't, as an opposition, get to choose the inheritance you might get if you win."

But he is cautious, saying no votes have been cast, and they still have a "very big job to do" to get into Downing Street.

He reiterates that Labour would inherit a dire economy, and although it will be "difficult", it does "give the opportunity to turn the page and start to rebuild".

Sophy Ridge then puts to Mr McFadden that Labour isn't promising more spending and has actually signed up to today's tax cuts.

But he jumps in to say that tax is not being cut - the overall tax burden is actually continuing to rise.

The way Labour will invest is by growing the economy and increasing the tax take to then invest.

Mr McFadden also hit out at the Treasury minister Bim Afolami's statement that the Tory party wants to abolish national insurance altogether (see post at 19.37).

He says: "I just hope they get challenged as much on where that £40bn is going to come from as anything we say."

Labour's Pat McFadden is up next, and Sophy Ridge wants to know where his party will find the money for schools and the NHS now the Conservatives have nicked their non-dom policy.

The non-dom tax status has been abolished, meaning foreign nationals who live in the UK, but are officially domiciled overseas, will no longer be able to avoid paying UK tax on their overseas income or capital gains.

Labour has long pushed for the idea.

Mr McFadden initially avoids the question, pointing out the Tories had "spent two years attacking us for having this policy" and had described it as a "terrible policy".

"If they had adopted this two years or five years ago, just think about what that could have paid for," he says.

Their attack on Labour has been the phrase "no plan", but Mr McFadden says the move has "proven they have no ideas of their own".

Sophy presses that it still leaves Labour with a hole in its budget.

The national campaign coordinator says his party takes financial stability and the cost of policies "really seriously".

"We'll go away and we'll look at that," he says, adding what is in the manifesto will be "properly costed".

Next with Sophy is Treasury minister Bim Afolami.

He confirms the government wants to eliminate national insurance entirely.

It comes after the chancellor made a second consecutive cut to the payroll tax at the budget earlier today.

"We want to eliminate that double tax on work," he says.

"And this isn't just some ideological thing - it means it can help grow our economy because we'll increase the number of people who are working in our economy, increase the number of hours that they work.

"And the OBR, the Bank of England, all the independent forecasters recognise this will increase the growth rate of our economy."

He says it won't happen in the next "few months", but the long-term aim is to "eliminate that double taxation of work because it's unfair".

A Brief History Of Axes

Axes are prehistoric tools that have been tinkered with and improved for hundreds of thousands of years. Over time as we made advances in technology and discovered new resources, it has become a more efficient tool with greater balance, sharper blade, and better handling.

Whether you love history, axes, or both topics, you may want to learn more about the history of axes . We’re about to walk you through a timeline of major developments for this tool to give you a better understanding of how axes have become what they are today.

When were axes invented?

Based on archaeological digs in Africa, it is believed the first use of axes dates back 1.8 million years. The simple tools were made by the homo Erectus and comprised of stone that had bits chipped off to fashion a crude-looking blade. At this stage, the user would hold the stone in their hand as the concept of a handle hadn’t been devised. Source .

Around the time that axes originated, tools like pickaxes and other innovative cutting tools were also beginning to surface. It wasn’t until 600,000 BCE that two-sided stone axes were developed.

Researchers have found that although humans on different continents used different materials to make axes, their design was remarkably similar all over the world.

10,000-8,000 BCE

During the Middle Stone Age, handled axes were invented in Northern Europe. Rather than attaching a handle to the head, the first axes used an entire piece of reindeer antler. A blade was sharpened onto the base of the antler. This was a huge advancement as handles offered a lot more leverage, power, and comfort.

The first examples of axes that join an axe haft to a head, can also be found in Scandinavia. The Danes attached an antler helve to a chipped flint celt, which was superior to the previous all-antler tool. The bit was sharper and enabled the user to chop down small trees.

By 7000 BCE, flint axe heads were replaced by stone. They were stronger and sharper, making most jobs easier.

3000 BCE-200 BCE

During this period, axes evolved into much thinner, sharper tools. Stone was replaced by copper; copper was replaced by bronze. But it was the advent of iron that allowed the first use of an axe eye. At extreme heat, a rectangular piece of iron was folded around a bar. The other side of the head was hammered into a blade.

During this period, double-bladed axes were created by the Vikings. They were mostly used for general work like felling trees but were sometimes used as a weapon.

1740-1765

Around 1740, the English began mass-producing cast steel. This technology was applied to axe making by 1765 to make the cutting edge section of the head. Making the whole head from cast steel was cost-prohibitive at this stage.

As American settlers migrated towards the Pacific Northwest, they were faced with a challenge. Huge trees covered the landscape that European axes couldn’t cope with. To solve this, they developed felling axes that were much heavier with handles that were up to 42” in length.

Early felling axes were dangerous as little thought had been put into balance. Blacksmiths fixed this by forging heads that had a heavier poll, resulting in much-improved balance. Learn more about the forging methods here.

During the 1850s, steel was more readily available, and factories began producing axes at scale. Massive advances were made through die plating and casting, tempering shops, and grinding stones – all resulting in better axes.

By the early 1900s, axes had been on the decline for years. Saw technology continued to advance, offering a better solution. As power tools began to pop up, they were vastly superior in efficiency and much easier to use. Woodcutters quickly adopted modern alternatives and stopped using axes. Lumber camps and farms also threw down their axes, choosing easier methods of chopping.

2000s

Since the early 2000s, the axe industry has been going through a renaissance period. Traditional crafts, homesteading, bushcraft, camping , and survival have become much more popular.

The internet has allowed experts to share their knowledge, and beginners can easily learn new skills. Also, small axe makers can sell their products online, opening up a whole world of innovative axe designs.

Survival axes have grown in popularity with groups like survivalists and outdoor enthusiasts. This had led to innovations that hadn’t previously been a part of the anatomy of an axe. Extras like a compass, flint, fishing tackle, and other handy extras are often part of survival axes.

Although axes like tomahawks have been thrown for centuries, the 2000s have seen a surge in throwing axes as a sport. Many new axe manufacturers have started up, producing specialty throwing hatchets and tomahawks, with a big focus on well-weighted aerodynamic products.

Commonly asked questions

How were axes used in history.

The hand axe had a wide variety of uses over the centuries, including digging up vegetation, butchering animals, chopping wood, and as a weapon.

When was the first hafted axe invented?

Around 7500 BC the first true axes were invented that had a handle attached. They originated in Scandinavia and were originally made from an entire reindeer antler.

Summing up

The use of axes spans back thousands of years. Originally a simple blade fashioned by chipping stone into an axe head shape, they have evolved into powerful, super-useful tools.

As axes are used for a wide variety of tasks and in varying industries, they’ve become more specialized in recent decades. Looking ahead, it’s easy to imagine axe manufacturers will continue to focus on creating tools that are excellent at performing one job very well.

Paradoxically, more often in social media groups, we see axe enthusiasts passionately fixing up old axes. This is likely to continue to grow in popularity, especially as older models gain value over time. With the old becoming new again, it’s likely niche manufacturers will ramp up production of vintage axes. Let’s hope so anyway!
