Xunantunich is the tallest Mayan ruins site in Belize, located on the very western edge of the country, close to Guatemala. I visited this amazing site on a budget trip to Belize , and it’s a really fun adventure!

This guide will cover everything you need to know about visiting Xunantunich Mayan Ruins, from how long it takes to explore, the best way to see it, exact location, what to do nearby and so much more.

Let’s dive in!

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins quick guide

Location: Xunantunich Access Rd, San Jose Succotz, Belize Recommended stay: 2-4 hours Hours: 8am-5pm daily Best known for: the site’s largest temple, “El Castillo” Tour guide: highly recommended (find one here )

It’s one of the best things to do in Belize , and an adventure you won’t forget!

What does Xunantunich mean?

If you’re an English speaker or have limited knowledge of Mayan history, you may not even know how to say the name of this place. Don’t worry! I didn’t either until I hired a guide!

Xunantunich translates to “Stone Lady” in the Yucatec Maya language. More about the importance of this in a little bit.

To pronounce it, thinks of the ‘xu’ as ‘shoe’ and the rest just flows into place.

Feeling better, right? Let’s dive into the history next!

If you’re a visual person like myself, this map will help you see where Xunantunich is located within the country of Belize. I’ve also added a marker for Belize City (east coast) and Placencia (southeast city) for easy reference.

And if you’re looking for a site map of Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve , here’s a photo of the map and layout. This includes the visitor center, plazas and other sites with historical significance.

How to get to Xunantunich Mayan Ruins

San Jose Succotz Belize and Xunantunich

The largest city near Xunantunich is San Ignacio, and is about 30 minutes drive. If you’re looking for a place to stay nearby, that’s a great town with hotels and vacation properties , with quick access to the Mayan ruins.

Alternatively, Xunantunich is about 2.5 hours drive via car (80 mi/125km) from Belize City. If you have a rental ca r you can drive there yourself! Being from the US, it’s very easy to drive in Belize and that’s what I did!

And by the way if you need to rent a car in Belize, I highly recommend the discounted rates on  Discover Cars . I routinely save 10% – 30% on rentals (using the most reputable car carriers)!

Or when you book a tour of Xunantunich , it will include a ride.

Crossing the Mopan River

crossing the Mopan river

Part of the adventure of this archeological preserve is crossing the Mopan River . Whether you’re driving yourself or taking another form of transportation, you’ll need to use the Xunantunich Hand Cranked River Ferry.

And – it’s exactly what it sounds like! You’ll drive your car onto a ferry which is operated by 2-3 people, who will take you across the river. The whole thing takes just a few minutes and is quite fun, especially if you don’t typically get to use a ferry.

Pro tip: it’s not required to tip the workers, but it’s customary to do so. A $10 tip should do it!

Xunantunich Tours

looking out over Xunantunich mayan ruins

Real quick – if you really want to learn the most about this amazing site, you’ll want to book a tour . I used a tour guide and I’m so glad I did! He told me all kinds of interesting facts about the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich that I wouldn’t have heard otherwise.

Many of the facts within this guide are from the knowledgeable tour guide!

Book a Xunantunich tour in advance to secure your spot. During peak season (summer and January/February), tours will sell out so be sure to reserve your time.

Just be sure to tip your tour guide, too.

History of this Mayan city

xunantunich mayan ruins, ancient belize temples

Diving into the history of Xunantunich Mayan Ruins, it’s got a little bit of a rocky one…but so many of these ancient cities do!

The exact date of Xunantunich’s discovery by western civilization is unknown. The first site reports were made by a British Governor, Sir Alfred Maloney, in 1881 and British medical doctor, Thomas Gann, in 1894 . Further documentation reported that residents of San Jose Succotz performed rituals here, indicating it was a sacred place.

Xunantunich is located in the Belize River Valley, which is home to several other medium-sized Maya Kingdoms. Often, these kingdoms were under control by one of the larger cites, such as Caracol, Calakmul, Naranjo or Tikal.

Because Xunantunich was perched on the river, it had the ability to control trade and the movement of goods, which allowed it to become more powerful.

Although a smaller footprint than nearby enemies, Xunantunich had victories over Caracol and Tikal during wars in 552 and 562 AD, respectively.

Xunantunich was at the top of it’s fame in 800-900 AD, when many other cities in the area were declining. It’s estimated the city was abandoned over 1,000 years ago.

By the way, if you’re looking for another ancient city to visit, I highly recommend a day trip from San Ignacio to Tikal in Guatemala .

Archeology details

mayan ruins of xunantunich

Like many Mayan cities, Xunantunich is an archeological wonder! And although it’s been studied for over 130 years by modern archeologists, there’s still a lot we don’t know about this place.

El Castillo, the largest temple, is actually solid on the inside. There’s only a small area near the top that has doors and hallways to walk through. More about El Castillo in a bit .

Only a small portion of the city has been excavated. Xunantunich has 6 plazas and 32 structures. It’s large enough to house an estimated 20,000 people in it’s prime!

Fun fact: as you’re walking on the plaza, you’re actually standing on 6 layers of plazas below you, too!

It took the Mayans 300 years to build Xunantunich!

The temple, “El Castillo”

xunantunich belize

The shining star of this archeological preserve is El Castillo, Spanish for ‘the castle.’ It’s the second-largest building in Belize.

The pyramid demands your attention as you walk into the main area and plaza. It’s believed the pyramid was used as a shrine, dwelling and meeting place for the most elite rulers of the city. The top was used for star gazing, speaking and sacrificial events.

With 4 sets of stairs leading up to the top, visitors can climb the ancient stairs to oversee the plaza.

My guide in Xunantunich said the ancient rulers would stand on the top and talk down to everyone during announcements and ceremonies. The entire city was built for the sound to reflect and bounce off the structures, allowing those in power to project their voice easily.

Pro tip: if you arrive early and have the place to yourself, one person in your party can stand at the center of the plaza while the other climbs to the top. Test this theory as it did! It gave me chills!!

Standing at the top of El Castillo, you can see the river valley and into Guatemala. I highly recommend the walk to the top!

Carvings on El Castillo Xunantunich

xunantunich mayan ruins

On the east and west sides of the pyramid lies large carvings. The original ones are made of stucco and buried for preservation. Fiberglas replicas currently fill the space. They’re amazing to witness up close!

These carvings represent astronomical symbols of the moon god, world tree (Pax gods) and Venus. Furthermore, the Bacabs lie along the 4 corners. Here’s more, as taken from the visitor center at Xunantunich:

“In Maya mythology, there are four bacabs who served as skybearers. The bacabs were positioned along the four cardinal directions at the edge of the universe. Throughout Mesoamerica, the bacabs, or skybearers, were widely associated with rulers and are often depicted supporting celestial thrones. It is therefore not surprising to find bacabs on the stucco frieze at Xunantunich given that the Castillo served as the elevated palace of the site’s rulers.”

More about the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich

walking the grounds and plaza

The 2nd ruler of Xunantunich was a woman, which was rare of Mayan cities. Even more impressive, the empire was one of the most powerful cities for over 300 years in time while other Mayan cities were falling.

During excavation, archeologists found the tomb of the woman emperor. However in the early 1900’s, Gann’s crew used dynamite to try to search for valuables and they crushed parts of the body. But that ultimately led them to her discovery.

The Pok-ta-pok game

Within the city of Xunantunich, there was a court for Pok-ta-pok. While there are several variations of the game across ancient cities in Mesoamerica, the rules as the guide told me are as follows:

  • It’s a cross between soccer and basketball, but much more difficult.
  • The ball was 10 pounds and made of rubber from sap trees, mixed with cotton and very firm.
  • Pak-ta-pok was played with elbows and hips.
  • The goal was for players to hit the ball into a stone hoop at either end of the playing field.
  • It’s believed that the players on the losing team were sacrificed. 😬

Not sure about you…but that’s not a game I’m looking to play anytime soon!

Can you climb Xunantunich?

climbing the pyramid belize

Yes! Yes you can.

To get to the top of Xunantunich, you can climb the steep steps on the front and sides . This is different than other ancient Mayan cities, like Chichen-Itza in Mexico, although I was one of the lucky ones to climb them in the late 90’s as a teen before they closed it down.

Alternatively, there’s a less steep path on the back side of the pyramid. Once at the top, you can look out over the entire city, the Belize jungle and even into Guatemala at just 0.6 miles away.

Xunantunich ghost

Adding to the mystery of this ancient Mayan city is the Xunantunich ghost. She was originally seen in 1892 and has been sighted several times since then.

With red eyes that glow like fire and dressed in completely white, she has typically been sighted in front of El Castillo. She comes down the stone stairs and then disappears into the stone wall.

To be honest, I’m glad I didn’t know about her before visiting – it might have swayed my opinion to visit!

Visitor center and artifacts in Xunantunich Belize

mayan clock

One of the things that makes this archaeological reserve unique is the large collection of artifacts (and replicas) on display. It’s like a mini museum with tons of Mayan history!

The Mayan clock is one of the coolest things in the visitor center. You can see how they determined the time using the natural elements like the sun and stars.

See replicas of the pok-ta-pok game court, the stucco carvings (also known as friezes) and other interactive displays.

Nearby is a small gift shop as well. You can purchase artisan fabrics, crafts and other souvenirs to remember your visit to Xunantunich Mayan Ruins.

Other Belize Mayan ruins

Feeling even more adventurous? Well the country of Belize might be small, but it packs a punch! With so much history within the country, there’s more Mayan cities to explore.

  • Caracol , located in the Chiquibil Forest Reserve
  • Altun Ha , just north of Belize City in Rock Stone Pond
  • Cahal Pech , located in San Ignacio on the western size of the country
  • Cerros , in the very northern part of Belize on the Corozal Bay
  • Lamanai , in Water Bank, in northern Belize
  • Lubaantun , in San Pedro Columbia, in southern Belize
  • Nim Li Punit , in Indian Creek, in southern Belize

Xunantunich vs. Tikal

belize mayan ruins

Some of the coolest Mayan ruins I’ve ever visited have been Teotihuacan near San Martin Centro, Mexico, Chichen-Itza and Tulum in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico and Tikal in northeastern Guatemala.

Because Xunantunich and Tikal are so close (within a 2 hour drive from each other), let’s compare the two!

Xunantunich vs Tikal – which is better?

  • If less crowds are important to you, then Xunantunich Mayan Ruins is the right spot to explore.
  • How much time do you have? Xunantunich can be done in as little as 2 hours, while Tikal takes at least 4 to see the highlights.
  • If you want food options and a great selection of shopping, Tikal is your spot.
  • Is bigger always better? You be the judge! Xunantunich has 32 structures while Tikal is a much larger city, with over 2,000.
  • Both have been preserved and cared for differently. Tikal had a lot of looting early on and lost important artifacts. Meanwhile, Xunantunich is one of the longest continuous city to be excavated, with the ongoing process over 100 years!

So why not visit both? If you can make time on your trip to Belize to spend a day in Guatemala, I highly recommend it!

Book it now: day trip to Tikal.

Here’s a guide to everything you need to know about Tikal ruins in Guatemala.

Tips for visiting Xunantunich Mayan Ruins

shopping for artisan crafts

First of all, you’re going to love seeing this ancient city! Here are a few more tips to help make the most of it:

  • If possible, stay in San Ignacio and arrive when Xunantunich opens. Getting there early, before the cruise ship tours start will allow you to explore the site when it’s less busy.
  • Wear shoes with good traction , especially if you plan on climbing El Castillo!
  • Sunblock and bug spray are musts! In fact, just slather yourself in bug spray. You’re in a jungle in Central America, after all. 😊 By the way, this is my favorite natural bug spray I travel with (that actually works).
  • Be prepared to walk a bit. From the entrance to the plaza is an uphill walk. You’ll be able to explore the whole area on foot so just keep that in mind.
  • Remember to bring cash to tip . Your tour guide will be full of helpful info and he/she works hard at giving you a great experience! Book a tour here .
  • You can shop inside the entrance or just before getting on the ferry to cross the river. You’ll find unique, handmade items perfect for souvenirs.

Nearby things to do in San Ignacio

San Ignacio Murals

Just 30 minutes from the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich, San Ignacio is an underrated destination within Belize. So many tourists focus on seeing the gorgeous beaches along the Caribbean that they don’t look inland. Here are a few other things to do near Xunantunich and San Ignacio…

  • Take a chocolate making class through AJAW Chocolate . Learn how to make chocolate like the ancient Mayans did centuries ago. (This is one of my favorite things in San Ignacio!)
  • A really fun nearby attraction is touring the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave . It’s an incredible adventure exploring another Mayan archaeological site.
  • Go mural hunting. For a low-key afternoon, check out the fun street art in downtown San Ignacio.
  • Day trip to Caracol Ruins . It’s a full-day adventure exploring another ancient city and Rio on the Pools.

There are so many more things to do in the area, but this post is getting long so let’s wrap it up already!

Also, was there a long line to get on the ferry, like was it a long process? Also, how were the roads getting to the ruins for San Ignacio?

There wasn't a line to the ferry when I went, but it was really early in the morning in the first 30 minutes they opened, before it was busy. I just showed up and they ushered me onto the ferry. I can imagine it would get busy in the peak of the day or if several tour buses arrived just before you. You could allow a little extra time if that's the case! The roads were mostly fine, as with most roads in Belize. Some are paved and others are dirt. The only really rough road I encountered in Belize was from Placencia to Belize City, when I took an unpaved road as a 'short cut' per Google's recommendation. It was not a good one 🤣

Hi there! I was wondering if the ferry actually had a cost to it besides the $10 tip you gave?

There was no fee for the ferry when I used it :)

Oh fun! I hope she gets to Xunantunich! It's a really cool spot to explore :)

Wow, Xunantunich is so full of history - and I didn't realize we were allowed to actually climb the ruins! This seems like a great stop to learn more about Mayan culture :) thanks for sharing

Yeah Jill you can climb them and see the hallways where the ancient Mayans used to go. Pretty cool!

Once a prosperous city state during the Classical Maya era, Xunantunich once was the home to 200,000 people, equivalent to two-thirds of Belize’s current population. The name Xunantunich, a Maya construct meaning “Stone Woman,” is a modern one as the original name for the city has been lost. Local Maya named the fading ruins “Stone Woman” because the site was regularly reported to be haunted by the ghost of a woman, usually depicted as being dressed entirely in white with glowing red eyes.

Abandoned by the Maya nearly 1,000 years ago for unknown reasons, Xunantunich was claimed by the jungle until archaeologists in the colonial period began conducting excavations in the mid-1890's. Today, visitors approach the site by crossing over the Mopan River on a hand-operated ferry and then climbing up to the limestone ridge that serves as the foundation for the city.

While some areas of Xunantunich are still being excavated by archaeologists, visitors can explore the on-site museum with interactive displays and exhibits before entering the city proper, home to six plazas and more than two dozen temples, palaces and other buildings. The original architects of Xunantunich designed the city around the "El Castillo" temple which lies in the exact center. Beyond its impressive size and panorama overlooking the surrounding area, El Castillo is remarkable for a series of stucco friezes on its exterior that depict stories and events from Maya mythology.

Visitors to the site can also take time to partake in bird watching or purchase handicrafts from stands operated by local descendants of the Maya.

This tour can be combined with Cahal Pech Maya Ruins and is inclusive of transportation, guide, entrance fees and lunch.

  • Dianna B 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Private is the way to go! My husband and I flew in to Belize City and overnighted near the ferry. Our plan was to do this tour and then take the ferry to Caye Caulker at the end of the day. We decide to go with the private tour because we were concerned about timing and making sure we made it back in time for the last ferry. It worked out perfectly! Dorian picked us up from our hotel in a nicely air conditioned vehicle and we were able to store our luggage in it. At the end of the day he dropped us off directly at the ferry terminal. Couldn’t have been easier! We started at Alun Ha which was about an hour drive from the city, He did a great job explaining the history and pointing out the perfect photo opportunities. Since it was a private tour, we were able to go at our own pace. Turns out that climbing one pyramid was enough for me 😜 After that it was about 80 minutes to our next stop for the cave tubing. We had a tasty lunch at a little restaurant that was in the park where the cave tubing was. The chicken and rice was included in the tour though the restaurant had other menu items so I’m sure they could accommodate special dietary needs. There was a bar that you could pay extra for adult beverages. We were a little surprised that the cave tubing portion of our tour was not private. We joined two sisters from NY and our guide was Paul for that part of the tour. The sisters were sweet and the group was still very small so it worked out just fine. There were facilities to change clothes at the park, which I wish we knew about in advance. It was about a 30 minute walk on a well groomed trail carrying your tubes to the launch point. Anything you bring on the water will get wet. The tubing experience was very gentle and so beautiful. After we got out of the water, there were some howler monkeys putting on quite the show. Overall a great experience! This adventure is offered by a lot of companies but I definitely think that paying a little more to make it private was well worth it! Read more Written March 6, 2024

  • David M 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Altun Ha and Zipline Adventure Well Worth It! Our tour was very informative, entertaining and enjoyable. Unfortunately, it had rained heavily in the days preceeding our trip, and the cave tubing was not open that day. We still were able to tour Altun Ha which was a highlight of our vacation for our 17 year old, and we also were able to really enjoy the ziplining course. The guides were great with our 6 and 9 year olds who were both first time zipliners. Despite the Cave tubing not being open, our tour guide, Wayne, made the day a great one for us telling us all about the areas we drove through, the country of Belize, and the many different types of flora and fauna we saw. He was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Our family really enjoyed our time with him. Our tour provider, Private Belize Adventures, was able to get us a prompt refund for the portion of the tour that was unavailable due to the weather, and they were able to still make the rest of our day a great family outing. We would recommend them anytime. Read more Written July 27, 2023

We booked thru Ramon’s Dive Resort & our guide was the amazing Francisco with Ancient Cultural Tours. Francisco is passionate & loves his history. He makes the tour extra special by taking you back in time, as if you were a Mayan. Human sacrifices & sorid history makes for a fascinating 4 hours. How about turning off your headlamp so you can experience what it must have been like for the Mayans with no light & a couple torches? Francisco makes the story come alive. Its approx a half hour hike to the cave, 45-60 mins in the cave & same coming back out. 30 min van ride from the store. It’s a full day! Oh - lunch was amazing too. It’s pretty cool - only 125 people admitted each day to control over tourism. Belize is doing it right. Google Ancient Cultural Tours & you’ll find Francisco. Tips that we didn’t know: - No cameras are allowed! - Take an extra set of clothes - No 2 piece bathing suits allowed - You meet at a store to transfer to your guide so snacks, beer, extra is available - An Unbelizable day that you soon won’t forget! We drove our golf cart to the water taxi and after an hour and a half we reached Belize City. We were enthusiastically welcomed by The General! As we traveled through the country he patiently answered our numerous questions and provided a thorough explanation of things we passed (ie we actually stopped at a cashew tree to see how it was grown prior to being processed and packaged). We had a great hike at he Xunantunich ruins! The General gave us enough time to hike and actually be present and enjoy the site. We were pleased and the excursion wasn't even over yet! The best was yet to come when we went cave tubing. Our party had never been in a cave and The General guided us through slowly (we even saw bats!). Hiking up the rainforest to the mouth of the cave was truly an experience. The General explained flora and fauna along the way, The cave was magnificent (pictures will never do it justice), the water was cool and clear, but the experience was PRICELESS. We did not want to zipline, and instead had a mini tour of Belize City upon our return. We have nothing but good things to say about our experience! Read more Written July 11, 2023

This was a very different kind of ruin as the building don't rise from the ground. More like mounds of sandstones that the Mayans lived on top of. Jimmy, who was our tour guide, was a wealth of knowledge. After the history lesson at the Mayan Ruin we traveled to The Living Maya Experience. This is run by a husband, Cris , and wife, Anita, team. Anita teaches all the information on the culture of clothing, including the Makapal, which they carry the babies in on their head. She then shows the art of crushing caco beans into a chocolate paste (which my husband loved doing). Then you learn the art of crushing corn into the dough that makes tortillas. Cris teaches you about the musical instruments and the vegetation. (Did you know there is a soap berry tree?) After all the knowledge you gather it is time for lunch. A real Mayan treat. Of course a Mayan lunch definatly needs a Mayan beer, Belikin. All of this information was presented in an excellent manner. This was worth doing! Read more Written February 28, 2023

This makes the 4th Mayan Ruin that we have visited and it was well worth the rather long drive from Hopkins Bay. The lunch we had at the restaurant was called Pibble. Very interesting, and tasty. But as good as the ruin was I'm not sure it was better than the cave tubing (which was made extra special by our guide Orlin!) This part of the tour was very educational and enjoyable. Our guide, Dorian reassured us he would wait while the tender dropped us to the terminal, Dorian managed to squeeze in 3 activities including tubing through the caves, zip lining in the jungle and a visit the ruins at Altun Ha. Dorian was very knowledgable and an excellent host. Thoroughly recommended! Read more Written February 24, 2023
  • Colleen H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles excellent We started early in the morning and was picked up at X' Tan Ha. When we arrived at Hol Chan, it was packed with several boats and lots of snorkelers. Our fun guides decided to go first to Shark Ray Alley, which was a wonderful decision as there was only one other boat there. There were so many nurse sharks feeding on the chum they threw in, it was incredible. We got to snorkel and see sting ray, nurse sharks (obviously), and lots of other fish. After we left Shark Ray Alley, off to Hol Chan, where we spent about 35 minutes with our guide snorkeling the area where we saw more sting ray, sea turtles. Our guide would swim to the bottom and get some of the fish to move out of the reef. We saw Jacks, groupers, gray snappers, angelfish, but we didn't see any seahorses. Definitely recommend. We kept him in the loop since we’d have to be back to our ship early. He let us know on our way back from the Mayan Ruins we can stop at local areas to shop and sight see! They were professional, knowledgeable and affable. When our ferry from Ambergris Caye arrived later than expected, they recommended we switch our tour order to avoid the crowds from the cruise ships. They displayed that level of accommodation and flexibility throughout the day. They were intent on ensuring we got our money's worth. Definitely recommend! Read more Written January 27, 2023

Xunantunich Maya Ruins Tour

Xunantunich is a boom-and-bust city in the Belize River valley. This Maya ruin has the second tallest building in Belize known as the El Castillo measuring 130 feet above the plaza floor. El Castillo has a stucco frieze that wraps around the building now we can only see the west and east friezes

It has the only ball court in the central lowlands (Belize) that has a hoop showing influence from Chichen Itza indicating to archeologists that it traded relations with the great city after the classic collapse of 900AD. This magnificent site is the only site that has columns in the Belize River valley.

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins Tours are usually combined with Cahal Pech Mayan Ruins tour  or  Barton Creek Cave tour.

The name Xunantunich comes from the Yucatec Maya language which means “Stone Woman". The Core of the city contains a series of six plazas surrounded by more than 26 temples and palaces. One of its main pyramids is known as “El Castillo”, which is the second tallest structure in Belize measuring 130 ft from the plaza floor.

From the top of the pyramid, you can enjoy spectacular views overlooking miles of jungle and farmland with the towns of San Jose Succotz and Benque Viejo Del Carmen on the Belize side and Melchor de Mencos across the Guatemalan border. Of El Castillo’s two stucco friezes, the western side had most of the stucco destroyed, but the eastern frieze is more complete, clearly displaying various motifs and symbols of Maya astronomy and cosmology. The vaulted rooms at the top of El Castillo provide shade and are a welcome place to relax after the steep walk up and take in the views.

Xunantunich Maya Ruins Experience with Luis

Kawiil Tours is an inbound tour operator for Belize and is owned and operated by Luis Zaiden . Luis grew up in San Ignacio Town, Cayo district in the beautiful foothills of the Maya mountain. From a young age, Luis had a passion for history and nature. He spent most of his childhood with his friends playing in the river and also playing hide and seek in what is now Cahal Pech Archeological site. He never knew at the time that he would end up running his very own Tour Company . Nevertheless, that came to an end when he went to high school and eventually started working in Belize City.

KaWiil Tours offers the best of Western Belize. Luis and his licensed tour guides are well-trained and highly educated in Maya History. Travelers refer to Luis as having an "Encyclopedic Memory" of nature and history.

Xunantunich Maya Ruins Tour from Belize City

Some 80 miles on paved highway, east of Belize City, among the northern foothills of the Maya Mountain Range, is one of the fabled Kingdoms of the ancient Maya, called XUNANTUNICH (Shoo-nan-too-niche), meaning “Maiden of the Rock”. Your air conditioned tour van will be rolling along the Western Highway through first, the flat terrain of the coastal plain of Belize, and then gradually through rolling hilly countryside, past the New Capital City of Belmopan, along Creole and Meztiso Villages, passing the Mennonite community of Spanish Lookout with their beautifully kept farmlands, past one of the three large cattle ranches of Belize (Running “W” Ranch), through San Ignacio/Santa Elena, twin towns of the Cayo District and across the Macal River, and finally to the southern banks of the Mopan River; cross over by hand operated ferry, and move to XUNANTUNICH, a mile uphill, with lush tropical rainforest on either side of the road and at the site.

Take a guided tour across grassy plazas, marvel at the perfect architecture of El Castillo, one of the three largest Maya Temples of Belize, and the largest structure on this site, standing 130 feet above plaza level, with its reconstructed East and West friezes representing Gods of the Maya and several inner chambers; move through other temples and courtyards where once Kings, Queens and their elite carried out special ceremonies honoring a pantheon of gods of a fantastic cosmological religion which reigned supreme in Mesoamerica for several thousand years. There is an excellent display center at the site, and you will have a chance to climb the “stairway to heaven” on El Castillo, from the top of which you will be able to see as far away as the “Melchor de Mencos” border town of nearby Guatemala, as well as a Benque Viejo del Carmen and San Jose Succotz, a town and village of Western Belize. Truly, the top of the world of the Maya! Lunch will be served at a Belizean restaurant back on the highway, along with some more shopping; then move leisurely back in your tour van to Belize City for your tour of the old capital.

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins Tour

Ancient maya archaeological site.

Can you Say “Shoo-nan-too-nitch”, That is how you pronounced the name of these Mayan Ruins! Another or English translation of Xunantunich is “Stone Woman” or “Maiden of the Rock”. This ancient archaeological is about 8 miles from San Ignacio Town and approximately 80 miles from Belize City. This is one of the few Mayan sites easily accessible to all. As you near the Guatemala border on the Western Highway, you will sign the Xunanuntich sign. Just up ahead is the hand crank ferry that will take you across the Mopan River.

During a tour of  Xunantunich , you can climb the tallest structure of the site “El Castillo”. At times howler monkeys can be seen near the structure or in the visitors’ parking lot. This pyramid structure is not to be confused with the El Castillo at Chichen Itza. Learn the history of the Maya City which was occupied during the Preclassic to Postclassic period. Your tour guide will take you on top of many of the structures on this Mayan site. Explaining what it was like when the area was inhabited. Huge hieroglyphs can be seen on one side of the main temple, this is the icon side of “El Castillo” you see in many photos online.

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins cover about one square mile or 2.6 square km.  Broken down into 4 groups of structures, your tour guide will show you points of interest as you walk around the ruins. Ball Courts, Plazas and raised terraces on which the pyramids were built.

History of xunantunich maya site.

The site core occupies only 300 square meters but its perimeter covers several square kilometres. Recent investigations by Dr Richard Leventhal of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Dr Wendy Ashmore from the University of Pennsylvania indicate that the site may be even more extensive than previously thought.

In Group A, Structure A-6 (El Castillo) rises 130 feet above the plaza level making it one of the tallest buildings in Belize. On this structure, there are two temples. The lower temple is famous for its large stucco frieze. A mask with larger ears probably represents the sun god. Next to this mask, there is a moon sign with a border of signs representing Venus.

In 2016, Xunantunich was known for the recent findings of a burial chamber, by a team led by Dr Jaime awe. The discovery is one of the largest Mayan burial chambers in the 21st century. Along with the remains of a male figure the team also found a number of ceramic vessels, obsidian knives, jade pearls, animal bones and some other artefacts made of stone.

Belize Horseback Riding & Xunantunich Mayan Ruins Tour

Xunantunich mayan ruins on horseback.

_96A1848

Xunantunich is an ancient Maya archaeological site located in western Belize, near the Guatemalan border. It is renowned for its impressive Mayan ruins, including a towering step pyramid known as “El Castillo,” which offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and the Mopan River. Xunantunich was a significant ceremonial and political center in the Classic Maya period, with its peak influence between the 7th and 9th centuries AD. The site’s name means “Stone Woman” in Mayan language.

Riding through the jungle on horseback is an exciting way to discover the ancient Mayan city of Xunantunich. The tour begins at a local stable where you will meet your Riding Guide, mount your horse and depart. The ride to Xunantunich takes you along a well maintained trail through a large private farm, along the banks of the Mopan River, in the village of San Jose Succotz.

Here you will cross the river on an ancient (yet well maintained and very safe) hand-operated ferry and then ride your horse up to Xunantunich. When you arrive prepare to dismount and let your horse rest and you spend as much time as you desire exploring the Xunantunich temples and plazas on foot. The horseback ride includes lots of nature viewing of local birds and plants.

Maya Ruin Tours

Belize maya ruin tours.

For more than 2,000 years, the ancient Maya were the dominant civilization in Central America. The heartland of the Maya world lies in what is now Belize, and modern-day visitors can explore more than two dozen ancient sites that have been clawed back from the jungle. The Maya created an enduring civilization of incredible complexity and architectural prowess. Many of their finest temples, pyramids, and buildings have lasted virtually unchanged for thousands of years.

The warm climate, fertile soil, and extensive network of rivers and offshore islands made Belize one of the most heavily populated centers of the ancient Maya world. Enormous cities with colossal pyramids and palaces were built all across modern-day Belize. Sites such as Xunantunich and Caracol vied with dynasties in Tikal, just down the Belize River in what is now modern-day Guatemala, for control of the area.

Caves Branch adventure tours allow you to walk in the steps of the ancient Maya and immerse yourself in the history and remnants of this great civilization.

The adventures below are best experienced as part of our all-inclusive packages but can also be booked individually . Individual tours (without a package) must be booked ahead of time. If you book a package, one of our friendly guides will meet with you when you arrive and answer your questions and help you decide which tours are best for you. You can also contact us for more details at any time.

Belize Maya Ruin Tours - Xunantunic

Xunantunich & Cahal Pech

Embark on a fabulous adventure to see some of the finest Maya Ruins in Belize. The drive through the western villages of Belize is a cultural experience with views of colorful homes, schools, and market-places.

Your first stop is the Xunantunich Mayan temples (Mayan for “Maiden of the Rock”). Ride across the Mopan River on one of the country’s last of two hand-cranked river ferries. Across the river, the tallest of the ruins stand at approximately 130 feet high, the second tallest Mayan ruin in Belize-offering a panoramic view of San Ignacio and nearby towns in Guatemala and the River below.

Experience an authentic Belizean lunch before heading off to the second stop on this Maya history tour – the ruins of Cahal Pech, meaning “Place of the Ticks”.

Cahal Pech Maya Ruin is located just minutes from downtown San Ignacio. The information that this site provides allows us to create a mental picture of the early settlement and living habitats of the people who created these ruins.

Although the Cahal Pech ruins are smaller in size than any of the other popular ruins in Belize, their religious significance is vital to the story of the ancient Maya. Among the fascinating objects discovered, archaeologists found carvings made from Conch shells, molded female figurines, pottery made with jade and obsidian thought to be imported from Guatemala, and other items used for sacrificial purposes. Also of interest are the two Ball Courts at Cahal Pech- which according to the writings of the Popol Vuh (sacred “bible” of the Maya), the game is believed to have been a ritual where victims to be sacrificed were first “defeated” by their captors.
