They Buried Chester Bennington Saturday

Chester Bennington was laid to rest in Los Angeles on Saturday (July 29) after a private ceremony.

His family had the option of taking the plot next to Chris Cornell at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery but chose the South Coast Botanic Garden near his home in Palos Verdes, California. Reports say that a large, glossy black stage complete with a drum kit was set up, apparently for musical performances. Some white couches were placed out front for Chester’s closest family and friends. There was also a podium for speeches and flowers everywhere.

The family asked that no one take pictures or video. Naturally, some have appeared.

Chester bennington (chester charles bennington).

Chester Bennington

Chester Charles Bennington was born on March 20, 1976, in Phoenix, Arizona. His mother was a nurse, while his father was a police detective who worked with child sex abuse cases and took double shifts. Bennington took interest in music at a young age, citing bands Depeche Mode and Stone Temple Pilots as his early inspirations, and dreamed of becoming a member of Stone Temple Pilots, which he later achieved. Chester Bennington’s parents divorced when he was 11 years old, and his father gained custody of him. After the divorce, Bennington started abusing marijuana, alcohol, opium, cocaine, methamphetamine, and LSD. At the age of 17, Bennington moved in with his mother, and was banned from leaving the house when his mother discovered his drug activity. He worked at a Burger King before starting his career as a professional musician. He was physically bullied in high school. In an interview, he said, “I was knocked around like a rag doll at school, for being skinny and looking different.” Eventually, Bennington was able to overcome his drug addiction, and would go on to denounce drug use in future interviews. During one Linkin Park tour, he started drinking heavily. In 2011, he said he had quit, noting, “I just don’t want to be that person anymore.” In an interview, Chester Bennington revealed that he had suffered sexual abuse from an older male friend when he was seven years old. He was afraid to ask for help because he did not want people to think he was gay or lying, and the abuse continued until the age of 13. The abuse and situation at home affected him so much that he felt the urge to kill people and run away. To comfort himself, he drew pictures and wrote poetry and songs. He later revealed the abuser’s identity to his father, but chose not to continue the case after he realized the abuser was a victim himself.

Chester Bennington was frustrated and almost ready to quit his musical career altogether when Jeff Blue, the vice president of A&R at Zomba Music in Los Angeles, offered him an audition with the future members of Linkin Park. Bennington quit his day job at a digital services firm and took his family to California, where he had a successful audition with Linkin Park, who were then called Xero. He managed to record the song for his audition in a day, missing his own birthday celebration in the process. Bennington and Mike Shinoda, the band’s other vocalist, made significant progress together, but failed to find a record deal. After facing numerous rejections, Jeff Blue, now a vice president of A&R at Warner Bros., intervened again to help the band sign with Warner Bros. Records. On October 24, 2000, Linkin Park released their debut album, Hybrid Theory , through Warner Bros. Records. Bennington and Shinoda wrote the lyrics to Hybrid Theory based on some early material. Shinoda characterized the lyrics as interpretations of universal feelings, emotions, and experiences, and as “everyday emotions you talk about and think about.” Chester Bennington later described the songwriting experience to Rolling Stone magazine in early 2002, “It’s easy to fall into that thing – ‘poor, poor me’, that’s where songs like ‘Crawling’ come from: I can’t take myself. But that song is about taking responsibility for your actions. I don’t say ‘you’ at any point. It’s about how I’m the reason that I feel this way. There’s something inside me that pulls me down.” Chester Bennington primarily served as Linkin Park’s lead vocalist, but occasionally shared the role with Shinoda. All Music Guide described Bennington’s vocals as “higher-pitched” and “emotional”, in contrast to Shinoda’s hip-hop-style delivery. Both members also worked together to write lyrics for the band’s songs. Chester Bennington died of suicide by hanging at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California; his housekeeper discovered his body around 9:00 a.m. PDT on July 20, 2017.

A moving tribute to Linkin Park’s late singer Chester Bennington at the Hollywood Bowl

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

There was a silent microphone at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday night. As the surviving members of Linkin Park took the stage, the spotlight fixed on a wreath-dressed mic stand, where singer Chester Bennington should have been.

As the band played the churning, pleading single “Numb,” the five Linkin Park members stayed in the shadows, the only spotlight illuminating the empty space up front.

Friday’s show was a difficult one for fans (and certainly the members as well) of the longtime L.A. heavy rock band. After Bennington’s suicide in July, the band was left reeling without its frontman. Their future as a group was uncertain, their personal loss profound.

“This show is probably the hardest thing we’ve ever decided to do,” singer-rapper Mike Shinoda said, as he took the mic and spoke to the silent, reverent crowd. “I don’t have the words.”

But for one last night — for now at least — the band got to be Linkin Park again, with help from dozens of friends and collaborators trying to fill the space where Bennington would have stood.

In the face of tragedy, the five other members of Linkin Park (Shinoda and Brad Delson, Rob Bourdon, Dave Farrell and Joe Hahn) kept remarkable composure, and even demonstrated sparks of joy onstage. After playing a silly vintage YouTube snippet of Bennington ad-libbing a song about unicorns and lollipops, Shinoda joked, “Y’all are really going to sing along to a YouTube clip?”

How could they not? This was maybe the last chance any of them would have to hear Bennington’s voice onstage.

“It was just total emotion for the whole concert,” said Crista Bruhn of New York, who traveled to L.A. for the show. She wore an “RIP Chester” T-shirt she bought for the occasion.

“I’m so happy to celebrate him but I’m sad he’s not here,” she said. “I wish I could have heard his voice in all these songs.”

“We went to two other vigils in New York, and the one thing that was missing was his music,” added her husband Jason Bruhn. A concert like this was the perfect, necessary sendoff for them.

“This did bring closure,” Crista said. “It was exactly what we needed.”

For a band to pull a show like this out of months of grief and loss was a considerable feat in itself. The guest list was comprehensive of Linkin Park’s influence — ’90s alt heroes, modern pop songwriters and metal gods. Alanis Morissette, Blink-182, No Doubt, Korn, Kiiara, Julia Michaels, Avenged Sevenfold. Jared Leto and even Paul McCartney showed up via video.

Linkin Park’s songs have always resonated with fans looking for heavy music with raw nerves and vulnerability. On Friday, songs like “One More Light,” “Waiting For The End” and “What I’ve Done” were obviously elegaic, but also reminders of Bennington’s uncommon sensitivity in his genre.

It was easy to see what fans and peers saw in Bennington — a sincere, generous talent who related to his audience in ways few singers ever grasp. The video clips of him speaking about empathy and kindness onstage after the Manchester concert bombing put lumps in throats around around the amphitheater. After hearing all these songs anew, it was hard not to wish that Bennington could had saved some of that inherent kindness towards others for himself in his own dark moments.

The band is obviously still struggling deeply with Bennington’s absence — as a bandmate and as a kind, troubled friend. The loss is still hard for anyone to understand, especially for Bennington’s family, including his wife, Talinda, who spoke briefly onstage about her husband’s battle against depression and his longtime charity work.

Toward the end of the set, Shinoda played a new song on piano, “Looking For An Answer,” that he said he wrote eight days after Bennington’s death. It was unfinished and riven with pain, and hearing it was like being let in on someone’s private grief.

As the near-silent crowd was ushered out to the ringing of feedback after a tear-streaked bow from the musicians, many were still processing this spontaneous outpouring of affection for a band that’s lost its heart and soul.

No one knows what the band’s future looks like yet. But Friday’s show finally gave fans a proper chance to say goodbye.

“I couldn’t have asked for more,” said Anna Camp, who flew from Oklahoma for it. Her voice trembled as she spoke about the impact Bennington’s music had in her life.

“My 3-year-old sings their songs along with me, especially on ‘One More Light’ where Chester sings ‘Flicker, flicker,’” she said. Tears welled up, and she had to pause to catch her breath before walking away, quietly, from one last Linkin Park show.

Chester Bennington Obituary: 1976-2017

The Linkin Park singer died today from an apparent suicide

can you visit chester bennington's grave

Chester Bennington , the singer of Linkin Park who died today (July 20) aged 41, was a pivotal figure in the 21 st Century US rock scene and a leading light of the nu metal genre, selling over 70 million albums worldwide and working with a vast array of acts from Jay-Z to Motley Crue and Santana . Yet his work was driven by his internal struggles – a deeply troubled artist, he battled alcohol and drug abuse issues and spoke in interviews about being a victim of child abuse.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 20, 1976, Chester was raised by his mother, a nurse, and his detective father who investigated child abuse cases, until his parents divorced and his father gained custody of him. His childhood was troubled – suffering sexual abuse from an older male friend from the age of seven until he was 13, Chester turned to drugs including opium, amphetamine and cocaine in the wake of the divorce, and was physically bullied at school – “I was knocked around like a rag doll at school, for being skinny and looking different,” he said. He took solace in artistic work such as poetry, drawing and writing songs, and in the music of Depeche Mode and Stone Temple Pilots .

Aged 17, Bennington moved in with his mother and began his music career singing in a band called Sean Dowdell And His Friends? and later, with Dowdell, Grey Daze, who recorded three albums during the 1990s. In 1996, he married his first wife Samantha Olit, with whom he had a son Draven. Leaving Grey Daze in 1998, Bennington was ready to quit music when Jeff Blue, vice-president of A&R at Zomba Music, gave him the chance to audition as lead singer with the band that would become Linkin Park in 1999. Finding a creative bond with co-vocalist Mike Shinoda, Linkin Park eventually signed to Warner Bros. and rode the rising wave of nu metal to Number Two on the US Billboard chart with their 2000 debut album ‘Hybrid Theory’.

Their amalgam of hard rock, rap and electronica, combined with Bennington’s lyrics about his parents’ divorce and drug abuse, helped the band becoming a culture-shifting phenomenon, winning multiple Grammys and selling 30 million copies of the album within two years of its release, making it the biggest selling debut album of the 21 st Century so far. Fourteen years after its release, Linkin Park performed the record in its entirety during their Download Festival headline set in 2014.

Chester Bennington

Linkin Park’s standing as heroes to a generation of teenage rap-metal fans has barely waned since. Their 2003 follow-up ‘Meteora’, featuring the global hit ‘Numb’, sold 27 million copies – the third best selling album of 2003 – and gained the band further critical acclaim when several songs were mashed-up with Jay-Z tracks on the collaborative ‘Collision Course’ EP; they would go on to perform their joint hit ‘Numb/Encore’ together at Live 8 in Philadelphia. Four of their subsequent five albums hit the US Number One, including this year’s ‘One More Light’ album, spawning huge hits such as ‘What I’ve Done’ and ‘New Divide’. Linkin Park have enjoyed almost twenty years as one of the biggest US rock bands, not only rising to headline many major rock festivals around the world but also encourage new acts such as My Chemical Romance and HIM by taking them out on their own Projekt Revolution tours.

Bennington also took time out from the band to indulge in several offshoots. Around the time he divorced his first wife, later to marry former Playboy model Talinda Bentley, he co-founded a “darker and moodier” band called Dead By Sunrise in 2005 which released an album ‘Out Of Ashes’ in 2009, and fulfilled a childhood ambition of fronting Stone Temple Pilots when he replaced Scott Weiland as singer in 2013. “Every band has its own kind of vibe,” Bennington said of taking on the role. “Stone Temple Pilots has this sexier, more classic rock feel to it. Linkin Park is a very modern, very tech-heavy type of band. I grew up listening to these guys. When this opportunity came up, it was just like a no-brainer.”

Chester Bennington

During his time in Linkin Park, Bennington kicked his drink and drug habits and appeared in several films including Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, Crank and the sequel Crank: High Voltage .

In 2017 interviews for the ‘One More Light’ album, Bennington opened up about his recent issues, which had inspired the album. “During 2015, 2016… there was a bunch of other stuff in my personal life that just went fucking crazy,” he told Rock Sound in March. “I spent a lot of those two years trying to hold my world together and everybody else was going through a lot of crazy shit too on a personal level… I feel like it was a legitimate breakdown of me as a human being and then going through all of the effort and hard work it takes to rebuild it and reaping the rewards. A huge part of that is being able to be open and honest and real with the people in my life, and that means my band members and being able to put it down in music and get it out.”

He spoke specifically about the song ‘Heavy’, saying, “When I’m opening that song saying, ‘I don’t like my mind right now’, that’s fucking real. It is not a safe place for me to be unless I’m doing what I need to do – taking care of myself, being real, being open, getting it out, taking all the steps to make myself whole, then it’s a pretty safe neighbourhood, but it goes bad real fast. It’s great to get that shit out. I recommend that everyone goes and writes their problems down on a piece of paper, takes it outside and fucking burns that shit. Talk to somebody about it. I’m fortunate enough to be a member of some twelve-step programs, and we get in a room with a bunch of people who don’t know each other and we all talk about our lives… I know exactly who I am, I know exactly what I’m made of and I’m totally happy with it. So it’s really great to be able to be doing what I do, especially for a person like me.”

Bennington was found dead in his Palos Verdes states home in California, from an apparent suicide. He leaves behind a wife and six children.

Chester was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1976. Chester’s childhood was difficult – largely caused by the sexual abuse he suffered from an unnamed family friend at the age of just 7. This abuse would go on for several years, with the man violating the young child.

Admirably, Chester didn’t press charges in later life – owing to the fact that he learned his abuser had himself been a victim of sexual abuse in the past. Not that this is any form of excuse.

While the abuse was ongoing, Chester’s parents split up when he was 11. After his father won custody of the children, Chester and his siblings moved in with his father. Chester later said that he had felt ‘abandoned’ by his parents during his childhood.

His problems were exacerbated by substance abuse during his teenage years. Chester used multiple illicit substances in his youth, including marijuana and stimulants, as well as alcohol. Chester, who was bullied during High School – stated that these substances were the only way that he could get his confidence back.

Linkin Park

Chester also found that writing music provided an escape from his struggles. When aged 17, Chester started putting more time into music. He received his big break during the 1990s, when he successfully auditioned to join Xero – the forerunner to Linkin Park.

Xero were eventually signed by Warner Bros. Records, leading to the renaming of the band, and later, the release of the ultra-successful debut album Hybrid Theory in 2000. The album was a huge success worldwide, leading to lifelong fans becoming devoted to the band. The band grew a cult following.

Over the coming years, further albums – each proving successful – were released. Meteora, Minutes to Midnight, A Thousand Suns, Living Things and The Hunting Party followed over the next twelve years. The seventh and final album was titled One More Light .

Fans and fellow singers alike were in awe of Chester’s incredible vocal range. The sentence “screamed like the devil, sang like an angel” is often directed at Chester. His incredible 17-second scream in the song Given Up has become the stuff of legend, and continues to amaze those discovering his music. Other screams in Blackout , and the roar of “I do” in One More Light are further demonstrations of his talent.

Linkin Park also demonstrated their ability to change their style successfully throughout the years. Hybrid Theory was heavy-rock based, but the final album One More Light was more pop-based. Each song had significant meaning to it, with Chester drawing on his past experiences to help provide material for Linkin Park’s songs. The band sold millions of records, and scooped many awards.

While Chester and his bandmates were loved by millions of fans around the world, Chester loved his fans in return. He would often call the Linkin Park fans “the best fans in the world”. His commitment to the fans is best evidenced by a 2007 show, where, Chester soldiered on and finished a show in Melbourne, despite having broken his wrist during the night.

Chester was also known to comment and provide encouragement to other budding musicians on social media, and asked once for a copy of a portrait that a fan had drawn of him. And unlike most bands, Linkin Park remained together, without ever splitting up. He later branched out into different projects – including singing for the Stone Temple Pilots in 2013, Dead by Sunrise , and Grey Daze – whom released unreleased material from Chester in 2020.

Chester was also a dedicated family man, who had six children, with three different partners. His first child – Jaime – was born in 1996 during his relationship with Elka Brand. He later adopted Isaiah – another son of Elka’s from a previous relationship.

He married Samantha Olit, and they had a child – Draven – together. They later divorced. Chester remained on healthy terms however with Samantha, as well as Elka.

In 2006, Chester married Talinda Bentley – with the duo going on to have three children. These were Tyler – born in 2006 – and twins Lily and Lila, who were born in 2011. Chester was known to care deeply about his family – he was a devoted father.

Chester had many demons throughout his life. The sexual abuse he suffered as a child left an indellible mark. As briefly mentioned earlier, Chester also suffered with substance abuse problems. Among the biggest problems was alcohol – with Chester frequently going through cycles of sobriety and subsequent relapse throughout his life.

Chester candidly spoke about his battle with substance abuse and addiction. He spoke of having suicidal thoughts during particularly dark times. He spoke of how in 2006 – after his separation from Samantha – that he was faced with a choice between “stopping drinking” and death. Linkin Park’s songs Crawling and Breaking the Habit are among the songs that are based on Chester’s addiction.

Mental Health

Chester also suffered from ill mental health – suffering from depression. He wasn’t afraid to discuss his mental health problems – at a time when this wasn’t routinely welcomed in the media. Depression and substance abuse are certainly linked, and as many can attest to, can be a damaging combination to live with.

The Police report into Chester’s passing mentioned two instances where Chester may have previously attempted to take his own life. The exact nature and truthfulness of these suggestions are unknown. Regardless of whether or not he made any attempt, it was clear to see the struggle he was going through.

In February 2017, Chester spoke in a radio interview about his mental health battle. He mentioned that he “had a hard time with life”, and that his mind could be a “bad neighbourhood”. He went on to say how his mind was a bad place for him to be by himself, and that there was a part of him that wanted “to take him down”. Such quotes showed the pain Chester was in.

One More Light

In October 2016, Linkin Park announced the One More Light World Tour – which would feature many of the band’s new material. Among these songs were Heavy and Nobody Can Save Me – two songs that hinted at Chester’s mindset. The titular One More Light – a song about losing someone – was particularly moving.

The tour ran smoothly in the first half of 2017, as Linkin Park’s fans around the world got to enjoy their music. Chester was putting in energetic performances, with the rest of the band contributing to several great shows. A few months into 2017, the band entered the European leg of their tour, with their final show coming in July 2017 in Birmingham, England.

While Chester generally appeared to be in good spirits, he was noticeably incredibly emotional during the performance of One More Light . Many later suggested that this was a sign that Chester knew he was reaching the end of his tether. This final performance took place on 6th July, just two weeks prior to his death.

In the Birmingham show, Chester addressed the crowd during a short break. He mentioned about the need to love one another, stating that love was the “one thing that could never be defeated”. He also paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the horrific 2017 Manchester Arena bombing after an Ariana Grande concert. His speech has become a reminder of his kind-hearted ways, and his wishes for the human race.

His final words in the speech certainly struck a chord with many.

“We don’t care what you look like, we don’t care where you’re from, we don’t care what you believe in. we love every single one of you out there, and nothing will ever change that.”

Death of Chris Cornell

Chester was undoubtedly affected significantly by the passing of long-term friend Chris Cornell, whose death was ruled a suicide. In the aftermath of Cornell’s passing, Chester wrote a heartfelt message on social media. Chester went on to perform at Cornell’s funeral. Chester was clearly emotional in Linkin Park’s performance of One More Light on the Jimmy Kimmel show, where he struggled to finish the song.

Chester’s final days began with some time at the family’s summer cabin – where he was joined by wife Talinda and four of his children. Video footage from July 18 shows Chester happily playing cards with family members, with the group laughing with one another. On the evening of July 19, Chester parted ways with his family.

Chester was due to attend a band photoshoot the next morning, so flew back to Los Angeles. What happened in the following hours isn’t entirely known. Tragically, Chester took his own life during the course of the early hours of July 20. Chester was found on the morning of July 20, having hanged himself with a belt.

His passing was met with utter devastation, with many left shocked and heartbroken. His passing was confirmed by bandmate Mike Shinoda. Fans paid tribute to Chester in the aftermath of his death, with fellow musicians paying tribute to him as well. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline received a 14% rise in calls on July 20 after Chester’s passing was revealed.

Linkin Park subsequently cancelled the remainder of their tour, and three years on, do not currently show any signs of reforming.

Chester Bennington was clearly loved. The internet is full of stories about the impact that Chester’s songs had on people – with many literally owing their survival to Linkin Park’s music. Knowing someone in the public eye was going through similar struggles became an important crutch for many.

Chester was laid to rest in a small service at the end of July. He was later celebrated in October 2017 – with Linkin Park hosting a large event named Celebrate Life in Honor of Chester Bennington . The event featured many musicians, and was attended by thousands.

His wife Talinda has since made significant contributions to the field of mental health. She has become an advocate for mental health, and helped launch 320 Changes Direction – a campaign focused around reducing the stigma of mental health, and helping people see the signs of someone struggling with their mental health. Talinda cares for the younger three children.

The Takeaway

While Chester had a difficult youth, through his hard work and determination, he was able to forge a highly-successful music career, and helped millions around the world.

He will never be forgotten, and his impact will be felt for many, many years to come by so many people. May he rest in peace.

A giant mural depicting late Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington has been revealed on the side of a local pizzeria near a freeway in Los Angeles, California.

The 20-foot-tall image was completed by artist Jonas Never, who spent two days to complete the touching tribute to the "In The End" singer .

The painting shows the Grammy winner shirtless with his tattoos on display while smiling and staring off into the distance. Around Bennington's head is a halo-like light.

The mural can be seen on the back wall of the new Rock 'n Pies Pizza. The building backs up to the 101 freeway in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles.

"I'd been seeing that big blank wall from the 101 and thought it would be good for something," the artist said while speaking with Variety .

While Bennington was often pictured on stage during Linkin Park concerts, the artist wanted to shed light on the artist in a different way. See photos of the Bennington mural here .

"I stumbled across this publicity still of him, smiling, very recognizable, with all his tattoos visible," Never said. "I thought it would be better than having him up there screaming."

More: Metallica Drummer Lars Ulrich Calls Chester Bennington a 'Kind and Gentle Soul'

The "Numb" hitmaker took his own life on July 20 at his Palos Verdes, California home. Since his death, a number of touching tributes have been shared on the Internet. Most recently, Bennington's ex-wife, Samantha Bennington, shared a heartfelt message about her former spouse on Facebook on Sunday.

Bennington and Samantha were married from 1996 to 2005 and share a 15-year-old son together named Draven.

"Our souls & energy are forever connected. Chester, as one of my best friends of the age of 19, a husband, father to my son, business partner, and all we created together, I'm truly honored to have completed our soul contracts together, build all we did together, & thank you for giving me the greatest gift ever, our beautiful son Draven," an excerpt from Samantha's note reads.

In addition to his family members, many of the late singer's fellow musicians have spoken out about his death.

The latest artist to express their sadness over Bennington's loss was Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich , who spoke out during an interview with Los Angeles radio station 95.5 KLOS.

"Chester was a very kind and very unassuming and very gentle soul, who had a really big heart. The first time I heard Linkin Park, just singing those songs on this first album — when was it? '99 or 2000? — the power that came out of him was just unbelievable. It was so original and so unique.

"He was one of those singers that has that rare gift where every word that comes out of him sounds authentic. He's not just writing something down that he sings… Everything that comes out of him sounds like he feels and he means every word, every nuance, every syllable," Ulrich said.

Chester Bennington will live on forever.

"Remembering Chester today. Feel free to share your favorite photo or video of Chester / LP below," the caption read. Bennington  died by suicide  on July 20, 2017, at the age of 41.

Shinoda also posted a black-and-white photo of himself with Bennington, admitting that he hesitated posting anything on this tragic day.

"I didn’t really want to post today, but I also thought it would be weird not to post," he began. "I don’t want the day Chester passed to be marked as an 'event.' I'd rather celebrate his birthday, celebrate album anniversaries, celebrate the countless moments our wonderful LP family has had together. Today, just take care of yourself. ❤️✌?."

Bennington's mother, Susan Eubanks, also shared a photo of herself with her late son.

"The last kiss I ever got from my wonderful boy! There are no words to explain how much I miss him! I want us to all celebrate his life today! Love you all! Please take care and celebrate Chester’s life today! He would want us to celebrate!," Eubanks tweeted.

Atwood Magazine - For the Love of Music

Remembering Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington: The Legacy of a Rock Icon

Linkin Park's Chester Bennington © http://chester.linkinpark.com/

written by Kevin Young &  Urooj Ali Rizvi

L inkin Park gave the world countless anthems, exploring heavy cynicism, anger and self-doubt but also, the idea of recovery, of remaking oneself. Constantly managing to reshape their sound, they also held onto their alternative-rock roots. At the heavily public forefront of their success was lead singer, Chester Bennington.

Bennington’s swift tonality of tinkering across the balance of soft-crooning notes and screeching vendettas made him an irreplaceable asset to Linkin Park, no less than iconic, an angry yet poetic music god of contemporary rock music.

As the world mourns his sudden, upsetting passing — the loss of a modern rock legend — Atwood Magazine would like to pay tribute to him, to his art, by sharing our ten favorite songs from Linkin Park.

  • “ In The End ” ( Hybrid Theory, 2000 ) – Kevin

It would be madness to talk about the greatest Linkin Park songs without including “In The End.”  It cemented Linkin Park as a household name while peaking at number two on billboard showcasing their alternative-rock roots.  “In The End” is a timeless tune because 17 years later many can still relate to “Trying so hard” but then realizing “In the end it doesn’t even matter.”  Also who could forget the song’s ghastly entrance chords and tear-jerking chorus?   It’s the raw story that life will always throw hurdles at you.  “In The End” validated Linkin Park as authentic for going to the dark places many artists at the time would forgo for something more fun and light.

  • “What I’ve Done ” ( Minutes to Midnight, 2007 )  – Urooj

The first time I heard Linkin Park, I was in the fifth grade and the school band was settling into the unmistakable, unforgettable chords of “What I’ve Done.” I would recognize that intro anywhere. Bennington’s slamming vocals in the chorus, championed by the angry electric guitar and the very distinct drumming — drawing together angst and guilt into a defiant anthem, a final goodbye to the past. Released in 2007 as a single off Minutes to Midnight , it was made infamous by the sci-fi hit film Transformers and went on to become one of “the” songs of Linkin Park, challenged only by powerful tracks like Numb and Leave Out All the Rest. A decade may have gone by but if the introductory chords were to be heard today, there’s no doubt that everybody would know exactly what song is playing.

  • “ Burn It Down ” ( Living Things, 2012 ) – Kevin

“Burn It Down” talks about the slippery slope of fame.   Mike Shinoda (rapper and vocalist) and Bennington bare it all sharing their experience of becoming stars only to be “broken back down” again.  It can be interrupted as a criticism to celebrities and the negative stigma attached with today’s social media troll culture –also known as having the ability to spread negativity while hiding behind a screen.  The scary part is this celebrity culture continues to intensify with today’s youth obsessed with wearing Yeezys and Kylie lip gloss . Perhaps Bennington wanted the youth to stray away from it?   It’s worth noting Bennington’s raspy holler notes are delivered flawlessly.

  • “ Numb / Encore “   ( Collision Course, 2004 ) – Kevin

Linkin Park wasn’t afraid to take risks with their sound. This synth-rock classic tells the tale of one standing at a cross-roads choosing between going forward or changing paths to keep one’s identity. Bennington belts out “All I want to do is be more like me and be less like you.”  This hit became even more of a mainstream staple after it was remixed with Jay Z’s “Encore.” This rock hip-hop fusion earned both artists a Grammy.   Although this wasn’t the first marriage between rock and hip-hop –RUN DMC and Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” will always be the pioneer rock hip-hop banger—but it was another step forward to inspire artists to take greater risks and work with people they would normally not think of.

  • “ Iridescent ” ( A Thousand Suns, 2010 ) – Kevin

Known for their heavy-pessimistically dark view of the world heard and felt in many of their songs, Linkin Park also had the uncanny ability to churn out hopeful rock ballads offering listeners solace.  “Iridescent” is the epitome of that.  The track talks about moving forward after falling to your all-time-low. Bennington is forgoing the signature scream for a softer croon encouraging fans to “Remember all the sadness and frustration and let it go.”  This was another hit used by the Transformers movie series. Bennington’s voice complements the soft chords and then ignites with the guitar rift for the finale –it could be the subliminal message of not giving up when you feel the weight of the world on you.

  • “ Blackbirds ” ( A Thousand Suns, 2010 ) – Urooj

A stellar track from their 2010 album, “A Thousand Suns,” Blackbirds opens on the ominous guitar chords paired with Bennington’s vocals. Tricked into thinking the song will be softer as the pitch changes, an unassuming beat kicks in, transforming the atmosphere and setting the base for Mike Shinoda’s effortless rap that bears strong resemblance to choral odes in Ancient Greek tragedies. “It’s harder starting over than never to have changed,” is some perceptive, self-directed wisdom that the bridge presents, Blackbirds creates a dark mirage of images — “I dig this hole through my skin and bones”, “I’m digging out my grave,”, “They close in, swallowing me,” and leaves quite the impression. Drawn into a strangely haunted, macabre and yet cathartic vision, dealing with penitence and guilt, Blackbirds is hard to forget.

  • “ Castle of Glass ” ( Living Things, 2012 ) – Urooj

A gem from Living Things , “Castle of Glass” was released towards the end of 2012 and swept through fans of rock music, garnering plenty of adulation and popularity. Heavy and laden but managing to couple the menacing setting with an impossible rhythm, Linkin Park impeccably layer the mood with bare synth-work alongside their excellent drumming — vaguely reminiscent of Mumford and Sons . Nodding one’s head to the bridge and chorus then simply becomes a symptom of  listening to “Castle of Glass.” Keeping in line with the electronic sampling and influence of their album, Living Things, “Castle of Glass” stands out as a testament to their constant experimentation and growth, firmly rooted in their identity of the makers of modern rock music.

  • “ Sorry For Now ” ( One More Light, 2017 ) – Kevin

“Sorry For Now” is an electro-ballad off of One More Light –the band’s latest album showing their surging stride into an electronic sound.  The track is a message from Shinoda to his kids about feeling sorry that he has to leave home for extended time because of work –a reality faced by parents and their children.   The final chorus eloquently shows how Bennington and Shinoda maintained vocal chemistry throughout the years often trading off lines.  A hidden gem in this track is Bennington taking a stab at crooning a rapid verse with flow like a seasoned rapper.

  • “ Leave Out All the Rest ” ( Minutes to Midnight, 2007 ) – Urooj

A softer track than many others, Leave Out All the Rest has acquired newer, perhaps more upsetting meaning in the past few days, with the passing away of Chester Bennington. Tributes all over social media are quoting the song,

And when you’re feeling empty, keep me in your memory,  leave out all the rest..

The song comes from a place of vulnerability, but also exceptional maturity which is why it’s such an important track. Not only does it explore the idea of insecurity and fear, it also offers an upsetting reassurance, a small plea to be remembered, asking to ‘leave out all the rest’. Released as the fifth and final single from the band’s third album, Minutes to Midnight, it is often the very first song that comes to mind when ‘Linkin Park’ is uttered. Perhaps this is how we’ll remember Chester and how we’ll remember to leave out all the rest.

  • “ The Messenger ” ( A Thousand Suns, 2010 ) – Kevin

Arguably “The Messenger” is one of Bennington’s best vocal performances.  It’s one of the most stripped down songs released by the band only using very light and simple guitar strums enabling Bennington’s naked vocals to drive the song.  “You’re growing desperate from the fight.  Remember you’re loved,” Bennington belts out to tell fans you’re not alone in whatever you go through and that there’s always love around.   The most powerful aspect of this song is the adlibs giving listeners the chills.  Bennington’s natural croon is unmatched putting a rock spin on a tool prevalent in R&B.  It’s fitting that this song closed off the album and it’s also a fitting hopeful song to end our list.

L inkin Park’s vast catalogue has imprinted itself onto the music industry and far more importantly, has reached impacted the world, transforming millions of lives. Bennington was always an integral part of Linkin Park, from the very start and a role model for thousands of angst-ridden, dissatisfied, conflicted individuals. He was open and outspoken about his demons of drug and alcohol abuse, creating a platform for conversation about the same and perhaps wanted nothing more than to inspire others to do well, to do better. He is survived by his wife and six children.

It’s going to be rather rough, if not downright harrowing, to listen to these treasured songs with Bennington gone — but let’s all do him a favor and celebrate his life and talent. Let us respect and honor his legacy. He has created some of the best music of contemporary times, offering thousands of us the strength we would not have found otherwise. It pains us to have to bid farewell to him, so suddenly, so sadly, but we will remember him always, and we will be grateful for all that he has done, all that he has given.

Atwood Magazine will miss him, just as much as everyone else, terribly and dearly. We’ll keep him in our memory and leave out all the rest.

Chester Bennington had a long career in the music industry and became a treasured rock icon before his death Thursday (July 20) of an apparent suicide. Though the singer will largely be remembered for his work in Linkin Park , he also ventured into a great deal of smaller bands and side projects throughout his career, and even had a stint as the frontman for Stone Temple Pilots .

Sean Dowdell and His Friends?

Long before Bennington’s major-label signing and debut in Linkin Park, the musician played in a variety of ground-level bands. Bennington’s first gig was singing with the band Sean Dowdell and His Friends?, a short-lived project that released a three-track cassette back in 1993.

Following Bennington’s work in Sean Dowdell and His Friends?, he and Downdell went on to form the grunge band Grey Daze and released a series of albums throughout the ’90s, including Demo , Wake/Me and No Sun Today .

Bennginton left Grey Daze in 1998, eventually finding himself with an audition to be the lead singer of what became Linkin Park. The rest is history, as the band would become one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 21st century.

Amidst the success of Linkin Park, Bennington also began working on material for the side project Dead by Sunrise . Though songs like “Morning After” were written in 2001, further material for the project came into fruition during 2005 when the singer was writing for Linkin Park’s third album Minutes to Midnight , inspiring an entirely new project. Though not as massive as Bennington’s primary band, Dead by Sunrise’s “Crawl Back In” hit the Mainstream Rock chart and released music up until 2009.

Stone Temple Pilots

STP sought out Bennington to replace their lead singer Scott Weiland when he left the group in 2013, which was a match made in rock heaven. Bennington played a number of shows with the band and was later officially announced as their new frontman, solidifying his position in the San Diego group. While Bennington performed the band’s usual set list, they also went on to release new music like the High Rise EP, which featured Bennington’s vocals.

Upon joining the band, Bennington told KROQ: “I grew up listening to these guys. When this opportunity came up, it was just like a no-brainer. We couldn’t really plan a tour until now because we couldn’t let people know what was going on. Now the cat’s out of the bag so we’re going to go out and make more music and go play more shows and have some fun.”
