10 Best Places to Visit in Ukraine

' src=

Ukraine is one of the largest countries in Eastern Europe. Despite the millions that call it home, it’s totally underrated by tourists. Often overlooked due to its troubles in the east, the rest of Ukraine is safe to travel through, and there’s so much to see and do. Not to mention, it’s incredibly cheap!

With a distinct culture and crammed full of captivating history, Ukraine is as far from touristy as you can get. Explore glorious cathedrals, Orthodox churches, ancient castles, lush forested hills, and Black Sea beaches. Here are best places to visit in Ukraine.

Uman

Situated in central Ukraine, this city on the banks of the Umanka River offers a relaxed layover between the popular cities of Odesa and Kyiv. First mentioned in 1616 when it was under Polish rule, Uman was built as a fortification against Tatar raids and has since undergone many stages of occupation. Most famous for the tragic 1700s Haidamak rebellions, today it serves as a popular pilgrimage site for Hasidic Jews.

Perfectly tourist-friendly, Uman’s attractions are well signposted, and you’ll have no problem finding your way around this laidback town. Visit the tomb of Rabbi Nachman Sofiyivka Park, see the obelisk in the town center, watch the Pearl of Love fountain show, or browse the daily market. For those interested in history, the Basilian Monastery (1764) is the oldest building in the city.

If you love green spaces, you’ll love Uman. It’s a major center for gardening research, and Sofiyivka Park is ideal for a leisurely afternoon stroll. Nature lovers can sign up for a tree tour at the Dendrological Research Center. Uman also boasts some colorful architecture, museums, WWII monuments, and a gorgeous pastel-colored church.

Rakhiv

While its self-christened title as the ‘geographical center of Europe’ may not be true, Rakhiv is certainly the highest city in Ukraine. Tucked within the lush Carpathian forests of western Ukraine, this mountain town is the perfect playground for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts.

Ideal for adventure lovers looking to explore the southern Carpathians, Rakhiv promises stunning scenery – including picturesque slopes and swinging footbridges leading across the rushing Tysa River. There isn’t a whole lot going on here, but that’s the appeal of Rakhiv. Head to the peaceful Dilove village for a quiet escape in the mountains, and swap the hive of the city for the serenity of the outdoors.

For a taste of the local culture, don’t miss the Hutsul Brynza Festival held in September. This fiesta honors the shepherds who return from the Carpathians each winter with cheese, wurda, brynza, folk song, and dance.

8. Chernihiv

Chernihiv

Chernihiv is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine. It was first mentioned back in 907 in the Rus’-Byzantine Treaty between Prince Oleh and Byzantium, but the actual date of establishment isn’t known. In this treaty, Chernihiv was ranked the second most important Ukrainian center after Kyiv.

Located on the banks of the Desna River in northern Ukraine, Chernihiv is the administrative center of the Chernihiv Oblast province. It boasts beautiful medieval architecture – particularly Catherine’s Church with its golden cupolas, and the 11th century five-domed Transfiguration Cathedral.

If you love beer, you’ll be in your element in Chernihiv, as it’s home to some famous Ukrainian tipple, known as ‘Cherninihivske.’ Don’t miss the chance to visit the two ancient cave monasteries on the outskirts of the city or take a stroll around the 18th century Kachanivka Palace with its beautiful neoclassical architecture, pretty gardens, and lake.

Bukovel

An idyllic wintertime destination, Bukovel is Ukraine’s big skiing destination. In fact, it’s the largest ski resort in Eastern Europe! Surrounded by three mountains, including the highest peaks of the Carpathians, the views from this luxury alpine ski resort are simply breath-taking.

High up on the slopes of western Ukraine, Bukovel promises bucket loads of fun for all ages. It caters to all skill levels with over 50 kilometers of groomed pistes and playgrounds. When you’re not out testing the powder, hang out at the snow park and bicycle park or learn some new tricks at the ski school. The best time to plan a skiing holiday to Bukovel is from December to April, but January has the deepest snow.

6. Chernivtsi

Chernivtsi

Chernivtsi can be found at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains in western Ukraine. Lovingly dubbed “Little Vienna,” the city boasts similar architecture to the Austrian city, as it was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

But the city is not just a pretty face; it has significant historical and cultural importance too. According to archaeological discoveries, Chernivtsi dates back to the Neolithic era. A fortified city once stood on the north-eastern shoreline during the time of the Principality of Halych. It was known as the ‘Black City’ – presumably because of the dark color of the city walls – and was largely destroyed during the Mongol invasion. Some parts of the fortress remain today.

With its cobbled streets filled with laidback cafes, Baroque buildings, bookshops, and parks, it’s the perfect place to chill out and absorb the no-frills, no-fuss atmosphere. Don’t miss a visit to the National University – this impressive palace is one of the largest universities in Ukraine.

5. Kamianets-Podilskyi Fortress

Kamianets-Podilskyi Fortress

Kamianets-Podilskyi in western Ukraine is most famous for the Kamianets-Podilskyi Fortress. In fact, it’s one of the main reasons tourists visit this fairy-tale city. Towering over the Smotrych River, the fortress is truly magnificent – it’s easily one of the most picturesque fortresses in Eastern Europe!

But there’s more to the city than just the fortress. Explore the cobbled streets of the well-preserved medieval Old Town lined with its pretty pastel-colored houses and admire the excellent street art that tells the tale of the city.

Head for the skies with a one-of-a-kind hot air balloon ride – one of the city’s highlights – waterfall-watch along the Smotrichsky Canyon, and take up archery on the Castle Bridge. Don’t miss the incredible festival of hot air balloons in the spring!

4. Chernobyl

Chernobyl

For those interested in history, Chernobyl promises a dark exploration. It’s the site of the infamous nuclear disaster that led to the premature deaths of thousands of people in 1986. Recently revisited in an HBO documentary, the Chernobyl exclusion zone – which is currently an eerie ghost town in northern Kyiv Oblast – is set to become a major tourist attraction. Make sure you go as soon as possible!

Inside Chernobyl, you’ll be able to witness the destruction for yourself – the demolished buildings and abandoned possessions of those who had to escape for their lives. Guided tours are available, offering the chance to learn about the tragedy first-hand. While filming is currently prohibited in the exclusion zone, the Ukrainian president has promised to lift the ban as part of a significant revamp of the area that will make it safer for tourists.

Odessa

First held by the Greeks, then by the Ottomans, and finally the Russians, Odesa in southwestern Ukraine has an interesting history – all of which is told through its many excellent museums. Today, Odessa is a modern city with stunning Art Nouveau architecture, pretty people-watching cafes, and gorgeous beaches. Located on the north-western shore of the Black Sea, it’s often nicknamed the ‘Pearl of the Black Sea.’

Odessa boasts a thriving nightlife scene in Arcadia, with Ibiza-comparable night clubs, enviable shopping, and fantastic wineries. Put that all together, and you get the ultimate summer holiday destination – all without the throngs of international tourists.

There is so much to do in Odessa. Hang out at one of the many beach club pools, watch a theater show, or stroll along the seaside promenade. It’s not only what’s on the ground level that attracts so many people to this vibrant city: Odessa also features a series of intriguing underground catacombs that span thousands of kilometers beneath the city!

Lviv

Lviv is the largest city in western Ukraine and boasts a historic center that’s well worth exploring. Established in 1240 and named after Leo, the oldest son of the King of Ruthenia, the capital changed hands several times between the Polish and the Russians before finally becoming independent in 1991.

Packed full of monuments, museums, and age-old buildings with archaeological findings dating back to the 5th century, Lviv has plenty for adventurers to uncover. Dubbed one of Ukraine’s most popular cultural hubs, Lviv abounds with art galleries, including the Lviv National Art Gallery, home to over 50,000 works of art. There’s no shortage of activities for a cultural day out, from opera and ballet performances to a charming café culture. You’ll find all sorts of quirky bars and knaipas (local pubs) tucked down narrow side streets.

Kyiv

The number one destination to visit in Ukraine is undoubtedly the capital, located in north-central Ukraine. Filled with striking Soviet architecture, monasteries, golden-domed churches, and handsome streets, this European city really packs a punch. Plus, it’s still totally underrated, so you won’t find many tourist traps here!

Dating back to 482 AD, Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe. Having faced both Russian and German occupation, it’s now distinctly Ukrainian. In fact, Kyiv had a considerable part to play in the development of both the medieval East Slavic civilization and the Ukrainian nation as we know it today.

Modern Kyiv is all go-go-go. Head to one of the many city bars, people-watch at a sidewalk café or visit one of the museums to discover some of Eastern Europe’s fascinating history. Visit the Museum of Folk Architecture and Ethnography, one of the largest open-air museums in Europe. The most popular attraction in Kyiv however is undoubtedly Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of the oldest and most important monasteries in Ukraine.

Don’t miss the chance to stroll down Andriyivskyy Descent, a steep cobbled street lined with Art Nouveau-style houses with gargoyles. Kyiv is also a popular destination for theater, opera, and musical performances, so bring your cultural A-game!

The Ultimate Ukraine Bucket List: 30+ Things To Do, Eat, and See in Eastern Europe’s Biggest Hidden Gem

top tourist attractions ukraine

What can I do in Ukraine? What are some of the best things to do in Ukraine?

As someone born in this country, I get this question a lot — especially from friends and acquaintances who haven’t traveled to this region and only saw Ukraine on the recent news.

Whether you’re a Ukrainian resident or a visiting tourist, there are so many things to do and see in this country of contrasts. From majestic canyons that rival the Grand Canyon to modern and colorful sculptures in Artist’s Alley… from hilarious comedy performances in Odessa to the tragic history of Chernobyl… and from tasting some of the best chocolate in the country to burning calories walking up Potemkin stairs, Ukraine has so much to offer!

Add a sprinkle of delicious food, breathtaking nature, traditional alcohol, and friendly locals — and you have the perfect recipe for the 30+ ultimate things to do in Ukraine.

Let’s check out the top tourist attractions in Ukraine — I’m sure you’ll find at least a couple of things that interest you!

Kiev-Pecherksa_Lavra

Admire the Golden Domes of the Pechersk Lavra

Chances are, you’re most likely starting your trip to Ukraine in the capital, Kyiv — So let’s start with its most famous attraction!

No matter where you look, you’re guaranteed to find a guide book with Kyiv’s most famous tourist attraction: the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

Kiev Pechersk Lavra is one of the most beautiful sights in Kiev. If you are going to visit Pechersk Lavra, get ready to walk all day! There are so many interesting and beautiful things on the territory of the Lavra, including galleries, parks, monasteries, and, of course, the famous gold-domed churches.

It is also worth mentioning the underground caves in which the relics of saints are stored. However, if you are planning to visit the caves, don’t forget to dress accordingly.  For women, this means wearing a long dress (that goes below the knees) and a head covered with a scarf ; for men, I recommend a nice shirt and pants .

One of the most interesting and authentic experiences you can have at the Kiev Pechersk Lavra is eating a meal in the refectory (a type of dining room in monasteries). Orthodox Christians prepare food in the refectory in the best traditions of Orthodox cuisine. The food there is quite tasty and the prices are budget-friendly. :)

If you don’t like to wait in line, it is recommended to visit the Kiev Pechersk Lavra on weekdays, when there are fewer locals and tourists. This isn’t surprising at all, since everyone wants to walk around the grounds and enjoy the atmosphere and beauty of the Lavra – once you visit, you’ll understand why!

There are plenty of tours to the Pecherska Lavra – try this Private Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Monastery tour (Viator ) OR explore the Lavra (plus go up to the secret roof!) in this Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Tour (GetYourGuide)

Stroll Down a Cozy Pedestrian Street

If there’s one thing that Ukraine has no shortage of (other than salo and vareniki, but more on that later!), it’s cute pedestrian streets in almost every major city.

Khreshchatyk in Kyiv, Arbat in Moscow, Champs-Élysées in Paris, La Rambla in Barcelona… Every European city has a street that is its “trademark” for walking around and admiring the sites.

It’s also the first thing that I recommend any traveler to do when they arrive in a city: It’s the perfect way to get the feeling of a city, see how the locals live, and maybe even find their favorite cafe or restaurant!

Each of the cities listed below have plenty of local and authentic boutique stores, delicious cafes, live music, weekend performances, markets, and more.

Here are some of my favorites:

Transport Yourself to Hogwarts at Chernivtsi National University

Have you ever dreamed of visiting Hogwarts? If so, then you must visit the Chernivtsi National University!

Chernivtsi University, also known as ChNU to the locals, will leave an unforgettable impression the moment you step through the corridors. Each room in the University is made in a unique style and with architecture from the golden age of Europe, whether it’s the Marble Room, the Blue Room, or even the colorful Church of the Three Saints.

After walking around, don’t forget to visit the botanical garden located at the back of the university! There, you can relax in nature, or simply enjoy the beautiful architecture of the “Ukrainian Hogwarts.”

By the way… Do you want to know about the famous duel between the professor and the librarian? Or which room will magically make you younger? And… is there really an underground passage under the university?

These — and many other interesting facts — you can learn on the official tour. ;)

To book a tour, you can show up at the university gates and ask the security guard – tours start every hour on weekdays. Learn more here .

Get into the atmosphere of Old Kyiv by Walking along Andriyivskyy Descent

We’re not done with Kyiv just yet! If you love art, culture, museums, or just cute vintage streets, Andriyivki Spusk (St. Andrew’s Descent) is the place for you.

St. Andrew’s Descent is one of my absolute favorite streets in Kiev, and for good reason: The street is full of museums, restaurants, street musicians, and souvenir shops. Here, you can chat with the locals and learn a lot of unique things about the city — or visit the One Street Museum to learn more about the street and its famous inhabitants, including Mikhail Bulgakov. Architecture lovers will especially love Andriyivki Spusk, since the old part of Kiev from the 18th and 19th centuries is perfectly preserved here.

I recommend visiting Andriyivki Spusk on Kiev’s “City Day” (the last Sunday of May every year), because this street will be decorated and have artists selling interesting paintings and other wares.

Sakura blossom in Uzhgorod Ukraine

No Ticket to Japan? No Problem! See the Cherry Blossoms in Uzhgorod

Ever dreamed of seeing sakura blossoms but don’t have enough money for a ticket to Japan?

Don’t worry and book a ticket to Uzhgorod instead!

If you visit Uzhgorod in the middle of April, you can catch stunning sakura flowers blooming all over the city.  The best place to admire this pink-hued beauty is the aptly-named Sakura Boulevard: this route runs from the bus and railway stations through several streets of Uzhgorod.

The legend of sakura trees in Uzhgorod are almost as mystical as the city itself. In fact, there are two theories as to how the sakura trees found themselves in Uzhgorod.

The first legend is that the sakura trees were gifted by a Japanese diplomat as a present to Franz Josef, who was the Emperor at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (which included Uzhgorod). The local residents found out about this gift, stole a few of the sakura seeds, and then sold them at the local market as fruit trees.

The second legend is that sakura trees were introduced in Uzhgorod in the early 1920s by the government to combat a landscaping problem. Uzhgorod’s city center was full of mud and swamps, and sakura trees were one of the only successful plants that could withstand the terrain and unpredictable Zakarpattya climate.

If you want to see more of the beautiful sakura in Uzhgorod, there are tours that will take you to the most popular locations:

lviv-drunk-cherry-cafe

Sip Kava at a Lviv Cafe…

Are you tired of drinking the same boring powdered coffee? Do you want to be a real miner for the day and mine for coffee beans?  Or enjoy a nice cup of coffee in the company of 20+ cats? Maybe even bargain for how much to pay your bill? You can find all of this and more in one of the many cafes in Lviv.

Locals love their cafes and are extremely proud to have their city known as the capital of coffee in Ukraine. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it has the most cafes per square meter!

Here are the most interesting cafes in Lviv:

– Lviv Cat Cafe : The first cat cafe in Lviv, you can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee (or some delicious food) in the company of cats. There are two floors and some of the cutest cats in all of Ukraine!

– Under the Golden Rose is a cafe serving Jewish food where you can bargain the final price of your bill.

– House of Legends : Where else can you find a car on the roof? House of Legends is one of the most popular cafes in Lviv where a chimney sweeper and his family lives. Don’t be surprised if you see magical things happening while drinking a cup of coffee!

– Lviv Croissants is a delicious chain of cafes all around Lviv that, like the name says, is famous for their croissants.

– Lviv Coffee Manufacture : If you’re looking for a fun activity to do in Lviv, why not go mining for your coffee? In this cafe, they’ll give you a hard hat and mining equipment, take you “underground,” and let you mine for coffee beans. I hope you strike it rich ;)

If you want to know more about Lviv’s coffee, there’s a wonderful Lviv Coffee Tour (through GetYourGuide)  OR Coffee Tour (via Viator)

lviv-handmade-chocolate

… Or Try Some Lviv Chocolate

Besides coffee, Lviv’s second-most popular “export” is chocolate. However, Lviv is much more than just going to a store and buying chocolate – here, you can take a masterclass on how to make chocolate, visit a real-life chocolate factory, and buy super discounted chocolate (but only if you’re quick enough!)

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to make chocolate, head over to Lviv Handmade Chocolate. You’ll be provided a chocolatier uniform, all the necessary utensils, as well as natural chocolate for material. During the class, you’ll learn the secrets of making delicious chocolate from a master chocolatier, get a complimentary chocolate drink, and in the end, be awarded with your own Chocolate Artist Certificate! Cool, right?

For those who prefer to do something less hands-on, you can also take a factory tour at the same Lviv Handmade Chocolate. The tour lasts 30 minutes, and you’ll learn how the company got started, sample chocolates from around the world, and find out the secrets of chocolate. Tours run from 10am to 5pm at their flagship store at 3 Serbska Str. and the ticket is 67 UAH (less than $3 USD). As a bonus, every guest will get a special souvenir after the tour.

Finally, if you haven’t bought any souvenirs yet, don’t worry! Lviv Handmade Chocolate has a super special sale every weekend: between 2pm to 2:15pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the chocolate in the store is deeply discounted so that you can get more for your grivna. You only have 15 minutes, but if you’re quick enough, you can make them count!

To get the full taste of delicious Lviv chocolate, you can opt for the following tours:

A 3-Hour Private Walking Chocolate Tour in Lviv OR A Lviv Chocolate Tour and Workshop with Tasting

Odessa-humor-chain

Laugh Until Your Belly Hurts in Odessa

One of the best things to do in Odessa is, surprisingly, laugh at the locals…

But not just at any locals! Every year on April 1st, Odessa hosts a “festival of laughter” that includes comedy skits, special events, and celebrity guests. The Humorina Laughter Festival begins with a carnival-like procession where locals dressed as clowns and mimes walk down the main street. Here you’ll be able to laugh at some wacky costumes and enjoy the atmosphere. Afterwards, there are plenty of comedy skits, shows, and other events around the city.

Even though this tradition started back in the 1970s, Odessites (locals of Odessa) were always known for their special style of humor – So i f you’re looking for a good mood and plenty of laughs, I can guarantee that you’ll find it in Odessa!

Sasyk-Sivash-pink-lake-Ukraine

Live La Vie en Rose at the Pink Lak e

If, for some reason, you can’t get to the Dead Sea in Israel, don’t worry — and get yourself to the Pink Lake in Ukraine instead!

Lemurian Lake , which locals call the “Ukrainian Dead Sea,” is a pink-hued lake located in the south of Ukraine, some 100 kilometers away from Kherson.

If you’re wondering where the color comes from, it’s no secret: there are special plants that grow in the salty water. In fact, spas in Austria and Germany use the mud and salt gathered at the lake in their treatments and creams.

However, you don’t need to visit a fancy spa to take advantage of the healing properties – just take a swim in the lake! Many locals report that it helps heal inflamed joints and other pains.

Unfortunately there are no buses that will take you to the lake, but you can get there by using Google Maps and driving a rental car .

Take a Stroll in Shevchenko Park

This started as a joke between my friends and I, but as the famous saying goes — “in every joke there is a little piece of truth.”

We always joke around and said that any self-respecting city in Ukraine should have a Park Shevchenko. For those that don’t know, almost every city has a “Park Shevchenko” in honor of the famous Ukrainian poet, Taras Shevchenko.

Next time you’re visiting a city in Ukraine, check out Park Shevchenko. No matter where you are — whether it’s Odessa, Chernivtsi, or Kyiv — you’re bound to find one. ;)

Fall in Love at the Tunnel of Love

The Tunnel of Love is one of the most romantic and magical places in Ukraine.  The tunnel is located in a small village called Klevan, 24 kilometers from a city in west Ukraine called Rivne.

The best way to get to the tunnel of love is to take a bus (or drive) to Rivne, and take a bus from Rivne to Klevan’ . There are also plenty of tours in case you don’t want to navigate the confusing Ukrainian bus system.

The best time to visit the Tunnel of Love is in the spring or summer, when the trees are in bloom and at their greenest.  If you’re visiting with your partner, don’t forget to make a wish – local legend says that if a couple visits the tunnel, they’ll be granted their wish!

To get to the Tunnel of Love, there are a few tours departing from either Kyiv or Lviv.

From Lviv: Full-Day Private Lutsk, Tarakaniv Fort, and Tunnel of Love Tour from Lviv // Lutsk and the Tunnel of Love Day Trip from Lviv

From Kyiv: Full-Day Trip to the Tunnel of Love from Kiev (Viator) // Round Trip to the Tunnel of Love and Tarakaniv Fort (GetYourGuide)

arsenalna-station-kyiv

Go down the world’s deepest metro station

If you’re looking for a different type of tunnel, you can also visit the world’s deepest metro station in Kiev.

With a depth of 105.5 meters (346 feet), it’ll take you 5 minutes to ride the elevator down to the metro at Arsenalna Station!

Arsenalna station is located on one of the major metro lines and is a quick 15-minute walk to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra – why not take the metro to see one of Kyiv’s most famous tourist attractions?

To get an in-depth look at Kiev’s metro stations (including Arsenalna!), you can book the Kiev Metro Private Tour (via Viator) or the Kyiv Metro Stations 2-Hour Guided Tour (via GetYourGuide)

vareniki-ukraine

Eat Vareniki

To visit Ukraine and not try vareniki ? How could you?! 😱

These delicious “Ukrainian dumplings” can be made with more than 100 different fillings, but the most popular are sweet (cherry, sweet cheese, and even Nutella!) or savory (meat, cabbage, potatoes, etc.)

Since Vareniki are one of my favorite dishes,I wanted to share some of my favorite places to try them in Kyiv:

odessa-catacomb-school

Explore the Odessa Catacombs

Looking for a few adventurous things to do in Ukraine? Look no further than the Odessa catacombs.

The Odessa catacombs are one of the longest catacomb systems in Ukraine: the length of the catacombs are estimated at about 2,500 kilometers. Just so you can understand how long these catacombs really are: the distance from Odessa to Amsterdam is only 2,300 km!

The Odessa catacombs were once used as a hiding place for criminals, eccentrics, and even partisans during WWII. Nowadays, there is even a subculture of catacomb explorers in Ukraine that walk through and try to map the routes.

Who knows what you’ll find in the catacombs? There are rumors that there is a solid gold replica of the Titanic hidden down below. Novice winemakers also leave their wine to age, since the catacombs have a unique temperature and atmosphere. Finally, you might even see rifles or other ammunition from World War II, as the catacombs have neatly preserved these “treasures.”

P.S. Don’t forget to bring a temperature jacket with you – temperatures can reach 15 C and below in the catacombs!

To go on a tour of the Odessa catacombs, you can book the very popular Wild Odessa Catacombs Tour (Viator) // the Private Tour to Odessa Catacombs (Viator) // 2.5-Hour Catacombs Private Tour (GetYourGuide)

Enjoy Unspoiled Nature in the Carpathian Mountains

After rummaging in the underground world of Odessa’s catacombs, why not climb up to the sky in Ukraine’s Carpathian mountains?

Clean air, breathtaking natural beauty, and cozy old Ukrainian traditions are only a small part of what hides behind this mountain range. If you’re looking for the best places to visit in the Carpathian mountains, here are my personal favorites:

Bukovel Ukraine

While You’re there, Why Not Ski in Bukovel?

It is time to shred some slopes at Bukovel, the most popular ski resort in Ukraine.

Located about 230 km (4 hour drive) from Lviv, Bukovel is the perfect place to spend a winter vacation in Ukraine. There are plenty of hotels and cottages that you can rent for parties of any size – no matter if you’re going as a couple or as a family. In the town of Bukovel and Polyanytsya there are also many delicious cafes and restaurants to warm up after a successful day of skiing, snowboarding, or just playing around in the snow.

Speaking of which: there are 63 ski runs for guests of all skill levels. There are 13 easy runs (blue), 36 medium runs (red), and 7 expert runs (black). These 60+ runs are scattered across five mountains that make up Bukovel: Dovha, Bukovel, Bulchinekha, Babiy Pohar, and Chorna Kleva.

Don’t know how to ski? No problem – there’s even a Bukovel Ski School to learn from the pros. :)

Odessa beach

Soak up the sun at a beach in Odessa

Ahhh, summertime. Make your summer a memorable one by taking a trip to Odessa.

The legendary Odessa beaches will welcome you with open arms – just be sure to come earlier so that you can take the best spots on the beach. If money is no object, you can also pay a little extra and reserve a VIP cabana.

Here are some of the best Odessa beaches (as advised by locals):

Chernobyl Ukraine

Stare at Giant Eggs in Kolomyya

Hmmm… huge colorful painted eggs?  Where else can you find such interesting things other than Ukraine?

Ukrainians love decorating eggs for Easter. In fact, they love it so much that a separate museum was opened specifically to showcase Easter eggs from different regions of Ukraine. If you want to delve deeper into the traditions of the Ukrainian people, be sure to visit the Pysanka Museum.

If you want to explore Western Ukraine, there’s an excellent tour that is tailored to visit the historical Hutsul regions (which includes Kolomyya and the Pysanka Museum!) –  You can book it here :)

Kamianets-Podilskyi

Feel Like Royalty at Kamianets-Podilskyi

What do castles, hot air balloons, and bungee jumping off a bridge have in common? Nothing, unless you’re in Kamianets-Podilskyi!

This small but magical city is home to a historical castle, a cobblestoned old town, and cozy churches. There’s even a yearly balloon festival, where dozens of colorful balloons soar into the sky during sunset.

The history of Kamianets-Podilskyi dates all the way back to the 14th century, when the castle was originally built. In fact, there’s even a local saying: Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle was first created by God, and then by man.

You can make a day trip to Kamianets-Podilskyi from Chernivtsi (about 2 hours by bus) or from Lviv (about 5 hours by bus).

To get the full experience, you can also book a Private Kamianets-Podilsky City Tour – click here!

Relax and Recharge at a Sanatorium

Sanatoriums are a nostalgic remnant from the USSR, where everyone’s parents and grandparents went to relax and recuperate. Thankfully, some sanatoriums are still here today, so you can experience the retro glamour of the past.

Sanatoriums were originally commissioned in the 1920s when Lenin wanted the Soviet people to work hard and play hard. These half spa, half hospital “resorts” were at their peak in the 1960s and gave locals the chance to recharge their batteries.

On first arriving at a sanatorium, the guest would first consult with a resident doctor, who would then prescribe a series of treatments, such as massage procedures, pools, saunas, aromatherapy, oxygen therapy, and more.

Although the USSR no longer exists, there are still some cities in Ukraine that have retained their sanatorium status. Here are some of the best:

banya-ukraine

…Or a Banya

If visiting a sanatorium is too far away, don’t worry and make your own “resort” — by visiting a banya!

Banyas are traditional steam rooms where people come to relax their mind, body, and muscles. It’s a perfect place to catch up with friends or destress by yourself.

Each city is sure to have at least one banya place, or a banya built within a spa. Some even offer extra services like massages, facials, or even being beaten with a bunch of dried eucalyptus branches (it’s very relaxing, I promise!)

Feel the Creativity at Landscape Alley in Kiev

Do you love colorful murals, fun statues, and creativity? Then you must visit the Landscape Alley in Kyiv.

What started as a small project to beautify the city in 2009 has turned into one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kyiv. Artists and architects from all over Ukraine contribute to this street with works such as a Little Prince statue, colorful mosaic benches, and an Alice in Wonderland-inspired children’s playground. Perhaps the most popular landmark at Landscape Alley is the 30-meter (92 ft) long “smiling cat.”

Don’t forget to take a photo in its mouth — and don’t worry, it doesn’t bite! I already checked. ;)

If you want to learn more about Landscape Alley (and check out some cool street art!), book this 3-Hour Kiev Street Art Private Tour

Eat Borsch…

You might wonder, what is the most Ukrainian dish ?  Borsch, of course! :)

For centuries, Borsch has been considered the number one dish in Ukraine and in Ukrainian families. In fact, every Ukrainian mother teaches her daughter to cook borscht according to their traditional family recipe.

If you want to try real Ukrainian borsch, you can find it in almost any Ukrainian restaurant.

If you want to try cooking your own authentic Ukrainian borsch, you can book this borsch cooking class in Kyiv OR Lviv

There are also plenty of food tours — like this gourmet Ukrainian cuisine tour in Kyiv OR this foodie and hidden gem restaurant tour in Lviv

Gorilka

… and wash it down with Gorilka

Gorilka (pronounced ho-reel-ka) might sound like a funny name, but it’s actually one of the most popular drinks on the shelves of Ukrainians!

Gorilka is a traditional Ukrainian alcoholic drink that is distilled from wheat, and less commonly, potatoes or honey. You can find gorilka in most stores or restaurants — or ask your local friends, they might even have a few bottles of homemade gorilka in their pantry. It might burn your throat at first, but at least you’ll get a taste of the true Ukrainian spirit. ;)

If you want to try gorilka with a professional, there are also many pub crawls and brewery tours around Ukraine.

Here are some where you can become a professional gorilka connoisseur: Boozy Adventure in Kyiv Drinking Tour // Odessa Pub Walk

Work off all those calories on the Potemkin stairs…

Who needs a stairmaster when you have the Potemkin Stairs? *badum tss*

When you travel to Odessa, make it a point to visit the Potemkin Stairs as one of the first places on your list. The stairs are one of the best-known symbols of Odessa and are considered a formal entrance to the city. At the top, you’ll be gifted with a beautiful view of Odessa’s waterfront and welcomed with opened arms.

To learn more about the history of the Potemkin Stairs (and many other attractions in Odessa!), check out this Odessa: Sightseeing Tour with Transportation (GetYourGuide) OR Odessa Private City Tour (Viator)

… and then learn how to cook your favorite foods

Vareniki, borsch, draniki… You didn’t think we were done with food, did you?

Although you may have departed Ukraine, there’s still a way to take Ukrainian food home with you: by learning how to cook it yourself! There are cooking classes offered every week in most major cities, from Kyiv to Lviv, Odessa, Kherson, and more. These classes are taught by a local and are available in both private and group classes.

What can you learn to cook in one of these classes? While each “teacher” is different, some dishes might include banosh, borsch, vareniki, kotleti (meatballs), and potato dishes.

If you’re looking for a cooking class in Ukraine, here are a few of my favorites– Ukrainian Cuisine Cooking Class: Borsch and Varenyky (Kyiv) OR Traditional Ukrainian Food Class (Lviv)

Aktove Canyon Ukraine

Get Active at Aktove Canyon

Located between Dnipro and Odessa, somewhere in a little village in Mykolaiv Oblast, Aktove Canyon is one of Ukraine’s most breathtaking landscapes.

Aktovsky Canyon (also known as Devil’s Canyon) is a stunning formation of boulders, peaks, and deep valleys made out of granite and cut across by the Mertvovid River. The canyon is over 50 meters (165 ft) deep and is spread across 250 hectares (618 acres).

Aktovsky Canyon is also one of the best hidden gems of Ukraine, since not even many locals know about it (including me!). If you want to see the beautiful colors of nature, explore rugged hills, or just want an extreme adventure in Ukraine, then this is the place for you.

The closest “big city” is Mykolaiv – from there, it’s a 2 hour (115 km) drive to Aktove and then a short 1 kilometer walk to the canyon. You can also do water sports, such as kayaking on the river, or just enjoy the canyon with a picnic along the shore.

Mezhyhirya Residence Kyiv

See Luxury and Opulence at the Ex-President’s House

Located 15 kilometers from Kyiv, Mezhyhirya is one of the most luxurious mansions in the country. The reason why? It was the residence of former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych from 2002 until 2014, when he was kicked out of office.

The residence is is luxurious — there’s a gold toilet and a gold-plated loaf of bread! –that its second name is the Museum of Corruption. In fact, the area is so huge that you can rent a golf cart to get around.

If you want to see the Mezhyhirya Residence for yourself, there are dozens of tours (click here!) that will take you there

Arkhivna Street Lviv

Get Lost on Arkhivna Street

It’s easy to get lost on Arkhivna – that’s because this street has over a dozen different names!

If you’re a film fanatic and can read Cyrillic, you can crack the puzzle fairly quickly: all of the street signs plastered on the wall have names like Charlie Chaplin, Federico Fellini and Ingmar Bergman, who are all famous film directors.

This tradition dates back to the early 2000s, when the organizers of the KinoLev Independent Film Festival started the tradition of “renaming” the street after the filmmaker that it honored that year. Every year, a new street plate is installed onto the wall — who will it be this year?

See the Glamour of the Golden Age at Odessa’s Palaces

Did you know that the Odessa region is famous for the largest and most beautiful palaces of Ukraine?

The most popular of them Vorontsov Palace, a gorgeous building that used to hold many important meetings and was the residence of many members of the Russian royal family. It’s open to the public and is one of the best tourist attractions in Odessa.

Other interesting Odessa palaces include The House of Scientists (which used to be Tolstoy’s residence!), Shah’s Palace, and Odessa Art Museum (which was a palace originally built for a Polish diplomat).

To get an in-depth look at these palaces and learn more about their history, you can hire a private guide that will take you to Odessa’s best palaces:

I recommend this Private Walking Tour of the Palaces of Odessa (via Viator)

Global Grasshopper – travel inspiration for the road less travelled

Top 15 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Ukraine

Ukraine is one of the most under-populated locations in Europe. However, this doesn’t mean there aren’t many gorgeous places to explore in the country (*please note that this was written before the war broke out). From tranquil nature to charming cities, here are my favourite places…

Lviv Ukraine

I’m a huge fan of Lviv, the country’s cultural capital. Located in the west, just an hour’s drive from the Polish border, Lviv has a charming and storied history.

There is so much history to see, from its founding by Daniel, King of Rus, to its conquering by Poland, the Mongol Horde, Austria, the Soviet Union, and finally, it’s becoming part of an independent Ukraine.

While there are plenty of museums and parks to visit, I highly recommend heading to a cafe around Rynok Square, having a coffee or beer, and spending a lazy day in the centre!

Kiev - places to visit in Ukraine

With a history dating back to Kievan Rus, you can imagine that the birthplace of Slavic culture is worth a visit. While much of the city was de-beautified during the Soviet Union, plenty of beautiful places are still worth your time.

If you like churches, I recommend checking out St. Sophias and St. Michaels for their beautiful colours and architecture. And don’t forget the cave monastery of Pechersk Lavra, one of Europe’s most religiously essential sites.

I suggest spending your day walking through the many well-kept parks or along the river. If you’re looking for a bustling city, in my opinion, Kyiv is an excellent choice! Don’t miss it!

3. Dzharylhach Island

Dzharylhach Island

In the Kherson region, Dzharylhach is an uninhabited island in the black sea. While it is increasing in popularity with Ukrainians, it is still relatively unknown to foreign tourists. Well, it isn’t the most accessible place to get to.

There are a few ferries a day going to Dzharylhach from the mainland, and if you want to stay overnight, you have to camp. The water is crystal clear and you often see dolphins playing close to the shore. I suggest trying the famous stingray borsch at the beach hut before you leave!

4. Vorokhta

Vorokhta town

This small village in the Carpathians is famous for its dual viaducts. Of course, the historical one is no longer in use, but it is a beautiful piece of architecture you can see.

Not to mention the views of the surrounding mountains and rolling green hills. From Vorokhta, there are plenty of activities, like whitewater rafting or hiking Hoverla, the tallest mountain in the country.

Zhovkva - most beautiful places to visit Ukraine

This cute little city is just a half-hour drive from Lviv, and being able to take public transportation makes this a great day trip option for long-term tourists. Famous for its castle, Zhovka also has a beautiful central square with plenty of shops and fountains.

Before WWII, the city was a shtetl, and you can even see the ruins of the old Jewish synagogue. The city has been trying to raise money for its restoration, so hopefully, that will be done before you visit.

Bakota - places to visit is Ukraine

Bakota is a super popular camping spot for Ukrainians during the summer. It is a reservoir that covers an underwater town. Back in the Soviet Union, they wanted to divert the Bug River and thus had to relocate an entire town to an area nearby.

You can take a boat to the cliffs, where a famous cave monastery (founded by the same founder of Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv) exists. Or you can spend days hanging with friends along the shore, drinking horilka, and eating nonstop.

7. The Pink Lake

Pink Lake- Ukraine

Ukraine has a few pink lakes, but the one on Arabatska Strilka is the best. A long isthmus near Crimea, located in the Kherson region, is a popular beach destination for Ukrainians. However, a visit to Henichesk Lake should be on everyone’s list.

The bright pink colour comes from algae attracted to the lake’s high salt content. There’s so much salt you can buy buckets full as souvenirs! We just scraped some up off the ground and took it with us.

8. Hoverla Mountain

Hoverla

The tallest mountain in the country is Hoverla, located in the Carpathian mountains. It is 2061 meters tall and can be easily scaled in a few hours.

I recommend going right before Spring when snow is still at the top; it makes for some sledging!

A traditional pastime at the top is to pop a bottle of champagne (well, seeing as this is Ukraine, most likely a bottle of overly sweet sparkling wine) and toast to the climb. If you are lucky and the sky is clear, you can see many other tall peaks down to the lush valley below.

9. Kamianets-Podilsky

Kamyanets-Podilsk

A city surrounded by a national park, Kamyanets-Podilsk is famous for its castle. This country has many courts, but this one is especially beautiful!

Located on a cliff overlooking a valley, the castle has been overlooking the city for nearly 800 years. It’s a must-visit place for people looking to visit somewhere outside the Big Three Tourist cities.

Odesa - best spots to explore in Ukraine

Odesa is the most popular beach city in the country, but it also has plenty of beautiful architecture. Now called the pearl of the black sea, the land was originally an ancient Greek settlement over two thousand years ago.

If the city looks French, there’s a reason for that, too. The most famous governor of the town, Duc de Richelieu, helped modernize the city.

Having fled from France during the French Revolution, he joined Catherine the Great’s army and was awarded the governorship of Odesa as a reward.

One of the must-see places in the city is the famous Odesa Opera Theater. Located in the historic centre, the theatre constantly makes lists of the most beautiful theatres in Europe, and it’s a gem of the city.

11. Kherson Cliffs

Kherson Cliffs Ukraine

Located just an hour’s drive from Kherson city centre, next to a village called Stanisla, lay one of Ukraine’s most incredible geological formations.

While it was once home to a large settlement of Scythians, today, the cliffs are a famous sunset point for locals and tourists alike.

Some people call it the Grand Canyon of Ukraine, and while I don’t think it’s nearly as impressive as the one in America, it is still quite remarkable to see.

A widespread tradition when visiting the cliffs is to write a wish on a piece of paper, stuff it into a seashell, and throw it into the sea. I suggest doing this!

12. Chernivtsi

Chernivtsi University

This cute city is located quite close to the Romanian border and has the largest diaspora of Romanians in the country Of course, this region used to belong to them at one point, so there is quite a lot of history there.

Today, the city is a popular stop for local tourists, but one thing worth visiting for anyone is the university. The main building is built in the Eclecticism style, and there are affordable guided tours you can buy to learn about the school’s history.

13. Bukovel

Bukovel

Bukovel is a must-visit place for winter sports. There are six different ski slopes, and the town at the bottom is cosy and charming—if a bit touristy. This is a great place to visit in winter, with buildings resembling alpine chalets.

However, this is also a beautiful mountain town to visit in summer. A large lake surrounded by mountain peaks is great for water sports.

To get to Bukovel, you can take public transportation from Ivano-Frankivsk, with buses leaving multiple times an hour. Try to stay in a cabin with a balcony to admire the beautiful mountain while sipping on a tasty mulled wine.

14. Mukachevo

Mukachevo Ukraine

Mukachevo is another city in western Ukraine. It used to belong to both Czechoslovakia and Hungary, and the architecture shows. The main point of interest here is Palanok Castle, a 14th-century castle atop a volcanic hill.

Aside from the beautiful buildings in the old town, there are quite a few beautiful religious buildings, like the Dormition Cathedral. Like Zhovkva, Mukachevo was also a shtetl, so most residents before WWII were Jewish.

15. Uzhhorod

 Uzhhorod Ukraine

Uzhhorod is located in the same region as Mukachevo, a city best visited in Spring. Why? Because they have a famous cherry blossom festival that is worth visiting.

Like most cities in Ukraine, Uzhhorod has a castle worth visiting. I would also suggest walking down Korzo Street, which is in the historical centre and lined with beautiful pastel-coloured buildings and unique architecture.

The old synagogue has been turned into the building for their Philharmonic Orchestra, and I highly recommend a visit!

14 Top Attractions & Things to Do in Kiev, Ukraine

Written by Alison Abbott Dec 30, 2019

Kiev is having a moment. Regularly the subject of the nightly news, the city is just waiting to be discovered by tourists. You may know it as the capital of Ukraine and a manufacturing powerhouse, but what you may not know is that this lesser known European city also makes a dream destination for visitors.

Walk through the streets and visit the many small shops, restaurants, museums, and landmarks. The city has a population of three million, but in most neighborhoods, it retains its small-town vibe.

As the hub of science, industry, and culture in Ukraine, there isn't much you won't find in this undiscovered Eastern European gem. Whether you are looking for romance, history, or just a getaway to somewhere unique, Kiev offers a little something for everyone within the city limits.

Although there are many places to visit in the city, find the best spots for sightseeing with our list of the top attractions and things to do in Kiev.

1. St. Sophia's Cathedral

2. st. andrew's church, 3. national art museum of ukraine, 4. kiev pechersk lavra monastery, 5. mariyinsky palace, 6. independence square, 7. mezhyhirya: former presidential palace, 8. national opera and ballet of ukraine, 9. museum of the history of ukraine in the second world war, 10. st. volodymyr's cathedral, 11. the golden gates, 12. feofaniya park, 13. the motherland monument, 14. m.m. gryshko national botanical garden.

Saint Sophia's Cathedral

St. Sophia's Cathedral (also called Saint Sophia Cathedral) is one of seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Ukraine and was awarded the important status in the 1980s. It was constructed in 1037 and is named for Hagia Sophia. Since it's a favorite of tourists, visiting earlier in the day is recommended.

It's one of the oldest and most jaw-dropping of Kiev's impressive churches. Beautiful murals, ancient mosaics, and frescoes adorn the interior. Additional structures have been added over the years; one entrance fee is good for all.

Enjoy the views over the city form the bell tower. Tours are available.

Address: Volodymyrska St, 24, Kyiv

St. Andrew's Church, Kiev

Another of Kiev's important landmarks is found in Podil, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. It was built by the Russian architect, Bartolomeo Rastrelli, during the time of Catherine the Great.

Churches were often built high on a hill for all to see, and St. Andrew's is a prime example. While the church is no longer religious in nature, it does house an important collection of paintings and sculptures . St. Andrew was a patron saint of Kiev, and the impressive Baroque architecture reflects his importance.

Address: Andriivs'kyi descent, 23, Kyiv

The National Art Museum of Ukraine illuminated at night

One of the most visited museums in Ukraine is the National Art Museum. It was established in 1897 by a successful patron of the arts, Bohdan Khanenko, who was determined to build the first museum in the country. Succeed he did—the historically important building contains a collection of important sculptures, artwork, and icons.

Represented are Ukrainian artists, both local and those who have moved to other countries and continued their career in the arts. The museum also shows the work of contemporary artists and is recognized around the world as an important representation of art from Eastern Europe.

Address: 6 Mykhaila Hrushevskoho Street, Kyiv

Kiev Pechersk Lavra or the Kiev Monastery of the Caves

This monastery complex was founded by two monks of the caves: St. Anthony and St. Theodosius. Constructed over a series of caves excavated by the monks, it is remarkable to think they date to the 11 th century.

The Baroque style of Ukraine is again at work in the series of additional buildings in the complex. You might hear the attraction referred to as both the Near and Far Caves. Make sure to visit both areas, as you will find hundreds of artifacts.

Do not miss the underground crypts, where monks are buried under glass. Here, you'll find a fairly creepy and somewhat claustrophobic look into the past, and one of the most unique sights of the city.

The Mariyinsky Palace

This Baroque palace is the official ceremonial home for the President of Ukraine. After a fire destroyed the first structure, Alexander II had the palace reconstructed in 1870, following the model of the old drawings. The pale blue exterior lends a dreamy quality to the magnificent architecture.

Inside, visitors will find a collection of artwork by Ukrainian masters, as well as cultural and historic treasures. The surrounding landscaped gardens are a nice place for contemplation.

Address: 5A, Mykhaila Hrushevskoho St, Kyiv

Independence Square

Independence Square had its international debut in 2004 as the scene of the Orange Revolution, when the power of the people changed Ukrainian history and the future of the country.

As the central square in the city, many festivals, concerts, and parades take place in the area. The attraction contains six fountains, a waterfall, and a large column representing Ukrainian independence. In the evening, it makes for a great people-watching spot, and there is often a light show and music with the fountains on colorful display.

Visitors will find this area a convenient location for their stay in the city as it is close to many shops, restaurants, and popular areas.

Main building in Mezhyhirya, Ukraine

Mezhyhirya is situated in a lovely location on the banks of the scenic Dnieper River. The comples is the former residence of ex-president of Ukraine, Viktor Yonukovych. If you are lucky, your tour guide might be a caped member of the former resistance. Charged with protecting this example of political greed and corruption, he makes for quite an interesting hour of commentary.

Visitors will be overwhelmed by the extravagance on display. Today, in all its glory, the building is a symbol and reminder of overindulgence and institutional greed and corruption. Within its gated walls, there are tennis courts, a shooting range, an equestrian club, helicopter pad, ostrich farm, dog kennel, golf course, and hunting grounds—all built while the population of the country struggled to feed itself.

The surrounding gardens are beautifully maintained and a nice place to have a picnic while trying to process all that you have just taken in on the tour.

Golden Gate, Kiev

Although the original "golden gate" was dismantled in the Middle Ages, the gates that are here today pay honor to the main gate in the 11th century that helped fortify Kiev.

Modeled after the Golden Gate of Constantinople, the structure that stands today was built in 1982 amid controversy. There were no photos to compare it to, just oral tradition as to what the gates would have looked like, so there are many who feel as if this isn't an accurate representation.

At the gates, you will also find a branch of the Sophia of Kiev museum , and several vendors in traditional dress sell local wildflowers around the monument.

Getting here is easy—there is a station of the Metro with easy access.

Feofaniya park with St. Panteleimon's Cathedral in the background

Feofaniya Park is a beautiful respite in the bustling city of Kiev. Located near the southern outskirts, this park became part of the Soviet state farm system and home to the main observatory for the Institute of Botany of the Ukrainian Academy of Science . This school is well known in Ukraine and Europe in its studies of biodiversity.

Take a stroll in the park and explore the lush greenery and unique plants that call this park home. It's a great way to spend a lunch break or just get away from the city to recharge in a welcome sea of green.

Motherland statue devoted to the Great Patriotic War in Kiev

This statue, located in Victory Park , commemorates the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany and is a focal point in Kiev. Take a walk around the grounds and admire the views overlooking the Dnieper river.

Inside, visitors will find the Museum of the Great Patriotic War , opened in 1995 at the base of the statue. Thousands of visitors have flocked here to observe and view World War II memorabilia, from weapons to battle dioramas.

This giant titanium statue is taller than the Statue of Liberty. There is a viewing platform that can be reached by elevator, but only with a guide. When you are here, be sure to check out the Hall of Glory and the Hall of Remembrance and Sorrow , a sober reminder of those who lost their lives.

The M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden in Kyiv (Kiev) at sunrise

Named after the famed botanist Mykola Gryshko, this beautiful nature preserve is filled with local flora and fauna, as well as plants from all over the world.

Take a walk through the hothouses, greenhouses, or conservatories, where you can check out the exotic plants, as well as a plethora of flowers, from peonies to magnolias. If you are lucky enough to visit here during the spring, you can revel in the gorgeous lilacs in the central gardens, which are a favorite of visitors.

There is a small entry fee charged, but visitors could easily spend several hours here if they are looking for a green space to walk and enjoy the outdoors.

25 Best Things to Do in Kiev (Ukraine)

Ukraine’s capital is a green metropolis on flowing hills next to the Dnieper River. In the middle ages Kiev was the capital of an enormous state occupying a big tranche of Eastern Europe, and you can enter monasteries and cathedrals stemming from this golden age.

There’s no denying that Kiev has seen some tough times, from the Mongol invasion from the east in 1240, to the Nazis attacking from the west in the Second World War. These moments are part of Kiev’s identify and remembered with colossal memorials like the Motherland Monument.

But the city has always rebounded, as it did in the 19th century when it sprouted the many Baroque churches that pierce the skyline. Today, Kiev has 21st century history to retrace at Maidan Nezalezhnosti, the site of momentous demonstrations in 2004 and again in 2014.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Kiev :

1. Kiev Pechersk Lavra

Kiev Pechersk Lavra

One of the most important sites in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the World Heritage Pechersk Lavra is a marvellous complex of churches, bell towers and subterranean caves.

It can take around four hours to see everything, and you may need an English guided tour to get the most out of Pechersk Lavra.

Beginning in the 11th century, the oldest portions of this complex are underground, in two man-made cave systems, Near and Far.

If you’re planning to go below, try to arrive before the crowds as you’ll descend into a rather confined and bewildering space with a taper candle to light your way.

Canonised monks like Nestor the Chronicler used to live in cells, and are now preserved as mummified, imperishable relics.

Women have to observe a pretty strict dress code that entails covering your hair and wearing a skirt.

Available tour : Kiev: City Exploration and Kiev Pechersk Lavra Tour

2. Great Lavra Bell Tower

Great Lavra Bell Tower, Kiev

Still part of Pechersk Lavra, this sensational monument deserves special attention as it’s one of Kiev’s emblems.

The Great Lavra Bell Tower is an unmissable fixture on the city’s skyline and dwarfs the other monuments at Pechersk Lavra, climbing to just below 100 metres.

At the time of its construction (1731-1745) it was the tallest free-standing bell tower in the world, and is composed of four tiers, each narrower than the last, culminating with a gilded dome.

The style is Ukrainian Baroque, and while studying the three upper tiers architecture geeks will notice that the columns are Doric on the 2nd tier, Ionic on the 3rd and then Corinthian on the fourth.

For a small fee you can go up for an all-encompassing view of Kiev, while the mighty bell tolls every quarter of the hour.

3. Saint Sophia’s Cathedral

Saint Sophia's Cathedral, Kiev

Also included in the same World Heritage Site, Saint Sophia’s Cathedral is Kiev’s oldest surviving church and has architecture and ornamentation dating back to the 1000s.

Like the Pechersk Lavra it’s been elected one of the Ukraine’s Seven Wonders.

The cathedral, famed for its 13 gilded domes, was initiated in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise whose sarcophagus is on display.

You have to take your time shuffling around the interior because of the sheer quantity of medieval frescos and mosaics that have survived since the cathedral was built.

The pinnacle is the Orans of Kiev icon in the chancel vault, standing six metres high and depicting the Virgin Mary.

In the monastic buildings there’s a museum showing medieval artefacts from the cathedral and a model of Kiev before it was annihilated by the Mongols in 1240.

4. Pirogovo – Kiev Museum of Folk Architecture and Life

Pirogovo - Kiev Museum of Folk Architecture and Life

A perfect document of Ukrainian folk culture awaits at a sprawling open-air museum on the southern outskirts of the city.

Rural architecture from six different Ukrainian regions has been moved to this site and reassembled in six distinct villages.

There are more than 300 buildings, from churches to dwellings to workshops, in a living museum where you can watch time-honoured crafts in action like forging, weaving and pottery.

The museum was founded in 1969 and over time has amassed some 70,000 artefacts.

On show in old rustic buildings are glassware, ceramics, costume, metalwork, woodwork, embroidery and carpets, all opening a window on folk crafts and culture in days gone by.

Private tour : Kiev: Museum of Folk Architecture in Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi

5. St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery

St Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery

On bluffs over the right bank of the Dnieper, this working monastery dates from the 12th century and boasts a multi-domed cathedral and a bell tower.

The exterior architecture is from the middle of the 18th century and in an elaborate Baroque style, but the interior of the cathedral kept hold of its Byzantine design.

Sadly the building was torn down in the Soviet era when its art was moved to Moscow, but it would be reborn 70 years later.

Come by to see the sky blue walls capped with shining domes and the majestic view of the Knieper from the top of the bell tower.

The museum on the lower floors of the bell tower records the history of the monastery and the fate suffered by other religious monuments in the Soviet era.

Guided tour : Kiev: St. Sophia Cathedral and St. Michael’s Monastery

6. The Motherland Monument

The Motherland Monument, Kiev

Erected in 1981 the Motherland Monument is a gigantic, 62-metre stainless statue commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War.

In a park beside the Knieper, this symbolic figure of a woman is visible from all over Kiev.

To give you an idea of the dimensions, the monument is made with individual blocks of steel, held together with more than 30 kilometres of welding.

The sword that the figure holds up is 16 metres in length and weighs nine tons alone.

On the figure’s left arm is a shield bearing the insignia of the Soviet Union.

The higher of the monument’s two observation decks is at the top of this shield, though you’ll need to wear a harness to visit this upper one.

7. Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II

Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II

The Motherland Monument is integrated into this museum, and the memorial continues at the base.

See the marble plaques for the city’s 11,600 fallen soldiers and 200 workers, a “Flame of Glory” in a giant bowl surrounded by military hardware from the war.

Also walk the “Alley of the Hero Cities”, where Soviet cities that offered stiff resistance to Nazi Germany are remembered.

The museum is also gigantic, telling the story of the Second World War from Ukraine’s perspective with more than 300,000 objects.

The exhibitions here are very well-curated and the galleries are loaded with weapons both heavy and light, as well as maps, uniforms and archive photographs.

8. Maidan Nezalezhnosti

Maidan Nezalezhnosti

To get a handle on current affairs in Ukraine make for ground zero, at Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square). This has been a centre for political activism since 1990, and is where the Euromaidan protests occurred in 2013-14. There’s a contemporary memorial to the “Heavenly Hundred”, people who died in the protests.

On the lighter side, when Kiev hosted Eurovision in 2017 the fan zone was located here as if to show how much has changed in just a few years.

While you’re sightseeing, get a photo of the 2001 Independence Monument, Hotel Ukraine and the regal portico of the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy.

9. Khreshchatyk

Khreshchatyk

A gathering point and upmarket shopping street, Khreshchatyk ties the Maidan to the rest of Kiev.

This thoroughfare was almost obliterated in the Second World War, and was rebuilt in the Soviet Neoclassical style.

One of the neat things about Khreshchatyk is that during weekends and public holidays road traffic is prohibited and the street fills with families and couples strolling along and checking out the many street performers.

All of the major international retailers are on Khreshchatyk and there’s an wide choice of cafes, restaurants and ice cream shops, with outdoor terraces where you can sit and watch everyone going about their day.

Look out for the palatial TSUM department store, a Kiev institution, as well as the Ukrainian House convention centre and the lively Kiev Passage side street.

10. Andriyivskyy Descent

Andriyivskyy Descent

The most famous street in Kiev drops down the sharp slope from the Upper Town to the Podil quarter on the Dnieper.

At the top, St Andrew’s Church is in an opulent Baroque style and dates to the middle of the 18th century.

You can catch a funicular up from Podil, or inch your way up the cobblestone street if you’re feeling fresh.

The architect was Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, an Italian who made his name in Russia and the Baltic, designing the Winter Palace in St Petersburg.

From there make your way down through a neighbourhood known as the “Montmartre of Kiev”, not just because of the steep topography but also the arty ambience and evocative 19th-century architecture.

There are plenty of chic cafes to call in at, and stalls by the street sell paintings in summer.

Andriyivskyy Descent is also the location for the Kiev Day celebrations at the end of May.

Podil, Kiev

Kiev’s riverfront merchant’s quarter and former city centre was razed by fire at the start of the 19th century and rebuilt on a grid system.

To get there you could catch the funicular down from St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, which will drop you in a neighbourhood that was saved from major damage in the Second World War so looks jus as it did more a century ago.

Podil is a hip, cultural area, boasting Ukraine’s most prestigious university and lots of places to dine out.

Among the big sights are the spacious Poshtova Ploscha (Postal Square) next to the funicular station, and Kontraktova Ploscha (Cotracts Square), named for the Contracts House trading hall.

On this square look for the 18th-century Fountain of Samson, comprising a sculpture of Samson slaying the lion under a handsome rotunda.

12. St Volodymyr’s Cathedral

St Volodymyr's Cathedral

Kiev has many churches, monasteries and cathedrals now run as museums, but St Volodymyr’s Cathedral is a functioning place of worship where you can observe Eastern Orthodox services.

These happen twice a day on weekdays (08:00 and 17:00) and three times on Saturday and Sunday (07:00, 10:00 and 17:00). Easy to spot for its yellow facade, St Volodymyr’s is the mother cathedral of the Kiev Patriarchate of the Ukrainian Eastern Orthodox Church.

The architecture is 19th-century Neo-Byzantine, and many of the frescoes were painted by the feted Russian Romantic Nationalist Viktor Vasnetsov.

When the St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery was pulled down in the 1930s the relics of St Barbara were moved here, where they remain today.

13. Mykola Syadristy Microminiature Museum

Mykola Syadristy Microminiature Museum

Within the Kiev Pechersk Lavra complex is a museum for the artist Mykola Syadristy.

All of Syadristy’s works fit into a single room.

And that’s because they’re miniscule and require microscopes to see them.

Only then will you realise how complicated these pieces are, like a chessboard on the head of a pin, or the smallest book in the world at no more than 0.6 square millimetres.

The artist’s sense of imagination is also made plain in microscopic works like a poppy seed turned into a bird’s nest or a flea wearing a pair of golden shoes.

14. Mikhail Bulgakov Museum

Mikhail Bulgakov Museum

One of the most acclaimed Russian writers of the 20th century was born and grew up in Kiev.

His fine late-19th-century house on Andriyivskyy Descent is now a museum about his life and novels.

What makes the house so engrossing is that it inspired the home of the Turbins in the novel the White Guard, and the play The Days of the Turbins that came after.

The house is filled with Bulgakov’s possessions, and where replicas have been used they have been painted white.

At the end of a tour you’ll be invited to a cup of tea or coffee in this genteel setting.

15. Hryshko National Botanical Garden

Hryshko National Botanical Garden

Just downriver from the Motherland Monument, this sweeping botanical garden is managed by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

In all there are 13,000 varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers from far and wide.

The gardens are lovely in almost any season, but if there’s a time you simply have to come it’s the end of spring.

This is when the hundreds of lilac bushes on the “Lilac Alley” are in full bloom.

Spring and early summer bring a riot of colour as the peonies, magnolia and roses are also in flower.

Check out the greenhouse for exotic species and there are reptiles in the terrarium.

Bring a picnic blanket and give yourself time to watch the Dnieper bending past the spires of the St.

Michael’s Vydubytsky Men’s Monastery far below.

16. State Aviation Museum

State Aviation Museum, Kiev

Situated inside the old terminal building for Zhulyany Airport, the State Aviation Museum is a few kilometres southwest of the city centre.

Anyone with an eye for aircraft or Soviet hardware will be in heaven here.

The museum opened in 2003 on the 100th anniversary of the first manned flight.

It’s the second largest museum of its kind in former Soviet countries and has a growing fleet of aircraft, which numbered over 70 at the last count.

You can inspect Ilyushins, Antonovs, Sukhois, Tupolevs, Yakovlevs and of course, aircraft produced by the fabled Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau (MiGs). The size of some of the helicopters may catch you by surprise, like the Mi-24, which is both a gunship and a transport for eight passengers.

Available tour : Kiev: 3-Hour Museum of Aviation

17. Landscape Alley

Landscape Alley, Kiev

On the south side of the Andriyivskyy Descent, just off Velyka Zhytomyrska Street is a green space that has been turned into a wonderland by dozens of pieces of public art.

If there’s one thing all the artworks have in common it’s that they’re whimsical, light-hearted and adored by kids.

Some of the characters you’ll meet are a 30-metre cat centipede, a happy elephant fountain and benches in the form of a crow, cat and rabbit, all covered with mosaic tiles.

And at this hillside setting you can bask in photogenic views of Podil, the Dnieper River and Zamkova Hora (Castle Hill).

18. One Street Museum

One Street Museum, Kiev

It’s hard not to be enchanted by Andriyivskyy Descent, and all the stories associated with this famous street.

If you’re thirsty for more information there’s a museum near the bottom.

The museum has been cleverly designed to recreate the atmosphere of the street at the dawn of the 20th century.

There are more than 7,000 exhibits in the showcases, and it’s a crazy miscellany of artefacts, from vintage postcards to sketches, antique Bulgakov editions, photographs, costumes, tableware, newspaper cuttings and antique typewriters.

There are insights about the noteworthy people who have lived on the street, the history of St Andrew’s Church, and the castle built by Richard the Lionheart that once crowned the hill.

19. Golden Gate

Golden Gate, Kiev

In the middle ages Kiev was the capital of the Kievan Rus’, a federation of Slavic states that stretched from the Black Sea to the Baltic.

In that time there stood a humungous gate at the southern entrance to the city, but it was pulled down in the 13th century and remained a ruin until the 1980s.

In 1982, on Kiev’s 1500th anniversary the gate was reconstructed, even though nobody could agree exactly how it looked in its 11th-century heyday.

So even if the design is open to question the gate is an impressive structure with four tiers of merlons above the main portal and wooden extensions on each side.

In the surrounding garden there’s a monument to Yaroslav the Wise, an enlarged bronze version of a sculpture by Ivan Kavaleridze.

20. National Opera House

National Opera House, Kiev

It’s not often that you can visit a capital city and decide on a whim to watch Madame Butterfly, Rigoletto or Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet.

But that’s exactly what you can do at the National Opera House, and compared to the rest of Europe tickets cost next to nothing.

A seat in the stalls will cost around 500 Hryvnia, €18, and it’s even less in the balcony.

The building is magnificent as well, built in the Academic style over the turn of the 20th century after its predecessor burnt down.

If you’re staying at a hotel you can ask your concierge to book tickets if there’s more than a day’s notice, or you can go to the box office on the day.

21. St Cyril’s Monastery

St Cyril's Monastery, Kiev

If you want to browse one of Kiev’s exquisite churches without being jostled by tourists, this beautiful monument needs to be on your list.

St Cyril’s is a little way from the centre of the city and requires a metro and trolleybus ride.

But what greets you at the end of the journey is a monastery and church harking back to the Kievan Rus’. The church’s Ukrainian Baroque facade is from the 18th-century and conceals a 12th-centrury interior, the only one in Kiev that hasn’t required major interventions.

The many original frescos are bright and sharp after a restoration in the 1970s.

Go upstairs to the gallery for a closer look at the image of the Transfiguration on the ceiling.

22. Babi Yar

Babi Yar, Kiev

While you’re in the northwestern suburbs you can uncover perhaps the darkest period in Kiev’s history.

A brief walk from St Cyril’s Babi Yar is a ravine where a mass murder took place on September 29-30 1941. In two days 33,771 Jews were murdered by the SS, the largest single mass killing carried out during the campaign against the Soviet Union.

And during the remainder of the war up to 150,000 Jews, Romanis, the mentally ill, Soviet Prisoners of War and Ukrainian nationalists were killed in this place.

The site is now a memorial park, hosting separate monuments to the various group of victims: Jews, children, Romani people and clerics.

Available tour : Kiev: Babiy Yar Memorial & Museum World War II

23. Taras Shevchenko Park

Taras Shevchenko Park

Something that bears repeating is just how green the centre of Kiev is: You can whole quarters of the city without leaving tree cover.

One of the prettiest parks is Taras Shevchenko Park, fronting the Taras Shevchenko National University and a popular hangout for students.

But they’re not the only ones who meet-up here, as older citizens gather for boisterous games of chess that can get very heated.

Little ones can take pony rides, and you can also see the statue of Taras Shevchenko surrounded by flowerbeds.

This 19th-century writer and polymath has had an enormous influence on Ukrainian culture and helped to shape the modern Ukrainian language.

24. House with Chimeras

House with Chimeras, Kiev

Opposite the President’s Residence on Bankova Street is the pinnacle of Art Nouveau architecture in Kiev.

The House with Chimeras dates to 1901-02 and was designed by the Polish-Ukrainian architect Władysław Horodecki as his personal home.

Horodecki was a keen hunter, which explains the many creatures on the facade, both mythical and real, like dolphins, deer, elephants, frogs, rhinoceroses and mermaids.

Today the building is owned by the government and reserved for official receptions.

Access is restricted on the road, and in these tense times you can’t just show up to view the interior.

But if you fill out an online form well in advance there are tours on weekends, where Horodecki’s bizarre decoration includes a chandelier with catfish being strangled by lotus flowers.

25. Besarabsky Market

Besarabsky Market, Kiev

At the southern end of Khreshchatyk, a couple of streets across from Taras Shevchenko, is Kiev’s historic market.

Even plastered with advertisements, the early-20th-century market hall is imposing, and was the work of the Polish architect Henryk Julian Gay.

Shopping here can be intimidating as the stalls are run by fierce babushki.

Also, none of the produce is labelled with prices, as haggling is the way people do business.

So if you want to do some shopping you may need a Ukrainian friend with you.

If not, come for a snapshot of day-to-day life and grab something from one of the bars and cafes on the edge of the market.

The Lavra also not only located in another part of the city, but is part of a different national sanctuary than Saint Sophia Cathedral. While being a cultural attraction, the monastery is currently active. It was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine on 21 August 2007, based on voting by experts and the internet community. Currently, the jurisdiction over the site is divided between the state museum, National Kiev-Pechersk Historic-Cultural Preserve, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as the site of the chief monastery of that Church and the residence of its leader, Metropolitan Volodymyr.

Hoverla mountain at 2,061 metres, is the highest mountain in Ukraine and part of the Carpathian Mountains. The mountain is located in the Eastern Beskides, in the Chornohora region. In late 19th century the mountain became a notable tourist attraction, especially among tourists from nearby cities of Galicia. In 1880 the first tourist route between the peak of Hoverla and Krasny Luh was marked by Leopold Wajgel of the Galician Tatra Society. The following year the first tourist shelter was founded there. In the 20th century the mountain has been increasingly gaining popularity as an extreme sports site. Some routes are classified as 1A in the winter period, according to the USSR grading system. DeSantis allies reach settlement over who controls Disney’s governing district

Tourism oversight board members approve agreement, ending nearly two years of litigation after DeSantis’s takeover

Allies of Ron DeSantis reached a settlement agreement with Disney in a lawsuit over who controls Walt Disney World’s governing district, easing tensions between the entertainment giant and Florida’s governor.

Lawyers for the state had sued Disney over “11th-hour deals” that members of the district board – all company-appointed at the time – had passed before they were replaced by DeSantis appointees.

In the settlement, Disney agreed that the rules passed by the company-appointed board members are void.

Jeff Vahle, Disney World president, said in a statement that the company is “pleased to put an end to all litigation pending in state court”.

The agreement “opens a new chapter of constructive engagement with the new leadership of the district”, said Vahle, “and serves the interests of all parties by enabling significant continued investment and the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs and economic opportunity in the state”.

In a meeting, the members of the board of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District approved the settlement agreement, ending almost two years of litigation that was sparked by DeSantis’s takeover of the district from Disney supporters following the company’s opposition to Florida’s so-called “don’t say gay” law.

The 2022 law bans classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades and was championed by DeSantis, who used Disney as a punching bag in speeches until he suspended his presidential campaign this year.

As punishment for Disney’s opposition, DeSantis took over the governing district through legislation passed by the Republican-controlled Florida legislature and appointed a new board of supervisors . Disney sued DeSantis and his appointees, claiming the company’s free speech rights had been violated for speaking out against the legislation. A federal judge dismissed that lawsuit in January.

Before control of the district changed hands from Disney allies to DeSantis appointees early last year, the Disney supporters on its board signed agreements with Disney shifting control over design and construction at Disney World to the company.

The DeSantis appointees claimed the “11th-hour deals” took away their powers, and the district sued the company in state court in Orlando to have the contracts voided.

Disney filed counterclaims that included asking the state court to declare the agreements valid and enforceable.

At a press conference on Wednesday, DeSantis claimed he and his allies had been “vindicated”.

after newsletter promotion

“I’m glad that they were able to do that settlement,” the Florida governor said. “Those 11th-hour covenants and restrictions were never going to be valid. We knew that.”

In a statement, Charbel Barakat, vice-chair of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, said it was “eager to work with Disney and other businesses within central Florida to make our destination known for world-class attractions and accountable governance”.

The company had also sued DeSantis in federal court last year, arguing that the governor had been retaliating against the company for speaking out about the law, a violation of Disney’s freedom of speech. Lawyers for the state argued that lawmakers had a right to revoke special privileges it had given to the company.

In January, a Trump-appointed federal judge dismissed the lawsuit, siding with DeSantis and saying the company had no standing or merit to sue. While Disney appealed the decision in early February, the company in Wednesday’s settlement agreed to ask the appellate court to pause the appeal process, suggesting the company could eventually drop its appeal.

The British Museum names Nicholas Cullinan its new director as it tries to get over a rocky patch

LONDON (AP) — The British Museum on Thursday appointed National Portrait Gallery chief Nicholas Cullinan as its new director, as the 265-year-old institution grapples with the apparent theft of hundreds of artifacts and growing international scrutiny of its collection.

Previous director Hartwig Fischer resigned in August after the museum disclosed that more than 1,800 items were missing in an apparent case of insider theft. Many of the items had been offered for sale online .

Mark Jones, former head of the Victoria and Albert Museum, has served as interim director since then. Cullinan will replace him in the summer.

Cullinan has been director of the National Portrait Gallery since 2015, overseeing a major refurbishment of the building beside London’s Trafalgar Square. He has previously worked at Tate Modern in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

His appointment was approved by the British Museum’s trustees and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak .

Cullinan said it was an honor to become director of “one of the greatest museums in the world.”

He said he looked forward to leading the institution through “the most significant transformations, both architectural and intellectual, happening in any museum globally, to continue making the British Museum the most engaged and collaborative it can be.”

The museum fired a longstanding curator, Paul Higgs, over the missing items, and is suing him at the High Court. Lawyers for the museum say Higgs “abused his position of trust” to steal ancient gems, gold jewelry and other pieces from storerooms over the course of a decade.

Higgs, who worked in the museum’s Greece and Rome department for more than two decades, denies the allegations and intends to dispute the museum’s legal claim.

Police are also investigating, but no one has been charged.

The 18th-century museum in central London’s Bloomsbury district is one of Britain’s biggest tourist attractions, visited by 6 million people a year. They come to see a collection that ranges from Egyptian mummies and ancient Greek statues to Viking hoards, scrolls bearing 12th-century Chinese poetry and masks created by the Indigenous peoples of Canada.

The museum faces growing pressure over items taken from other countries during the period of the British Empire -– especially the Parthenon Marbles , 2,500-year-old sculptures that were taken from Athens in the early 19th century by British diplomat Lord Elgin.

Greece has campaigned for decades for the marbles to be returned. The British Museum is banned by law from giving the sculptures back to Greece, but its leaders have held talks with Greek officials about a compromise , such as a long-term loan.

Those efforts suffered a setback in November, when a diplomatic spat erupted over the marbles, and Prime Minister Sunak abruptly canceled a planned meeting with his Greek counterpart, Kyriakos Mitsotakis .

British Museum Chairman George Osborne said that with Cullinan’s appointment, the institution was entering “a new chapter in the long story of the British Museum with confidence, and back on the front foot.”
