25 Things to Do in Bucks County for a Fun Visit

Bucks County is one of the best places to visit in the greater Philadelphia area. It is full of beautiful parks and gardens and unique cultural and historical attractions. There is also lots of great shopping, top-rated restaurants, and many things to explore, so there is a little bit of something for everyone.

We love uncovering all the fun things to do in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Here are some of our favorites.

See the covered bridges

Red and white covered bridge.

There are 12 covered bridges that dot the landscape across the county. Generally dating from the mid-1800s, these bridges –which are a beacon for local photographers–are still open to traffic. A driving tour of all dozen of these quaint structures would take a day to complete, so we recommend splitting them up in eastern and western portions and making some nice scenic drives.

Shop at Peddlers Village

Buildings surrounded by flowers.

Peddlers Village is a delightful complex of colonial-style buildings, gardens, shops , and restaurants in Lahaska. Its winding paths pass more than 60 specialty boutiques and places to eat. In between, there are flower displays and water features.

Many weekends, visitors will find special events like the Strawberry Festival or the Summer Block Party that spread across the village. There are frequent decorations and competitions of different kinds, including a brilliant Christmas light display , a gingerbread competition, and even a competition for people making art and sculpture out of PEEPS marshmallows. We particularly enjoy visiting in the fall when the entrants in the scarecrow competition are on display around the property.

Visit Newtown

Man and dog walking down a street lined with shops.

Newton is one of the cutest cities in Bucks County. Its highly walkable main street (State Street) is lined with boutiques, restaurants, and specialty stores, which makes for lots of shopping and eating opportunities. When I worked in town, taking a walk here was one of my favorite things to do.

Music or book lovers will enjoy Newtown Book & Record Exchange while foodies will like the specialty vinegars and oils at The Tubby Olive. For the best (and most unique) ice cream, don’t miss the Zebra Striped Whale . If you’re hungry, check out local favorite Isaac Newton’s Bar & Restaurant or The Temperance House located in an inn that dates from 1772.

For a look at the historic side of the town, follow the Newtown Heritage walk. This self-guided tour will take you to 34 significant sites that span over 250 years of history.

Pick your own at Solebury Orchard

Apples in an orchard with signs marking the kind of apple to be picked

From a summer full of blueberries and cherries to peaches and apples in fall, Solebury Orchard is the place to go for fruit . The 80 acres of this Bucks County farm and orchard teem with fruit trees and berry bushes welcoming visitors to pick their own or buy them straight from the market. Don’t miss the chance to try their apple cider donuts .

Tour Fonthill Castle

Exterior of a concrete, castle-like building.

Fonthill Castle is one of the most unique places to go in Bucks County and, in fact, in all of Pennsylvania. Built in 1908, the historic structure was once a palatial home but is now a museum in Doylestown.

The Castle was built by Henry Chapman Mercer, an archaeologist and collector. With 44 rooms, 32 stairwells, and 18 fireplaces, Fonthill is filled with unique Moravian tiles, books, engravings, and lots of items collected during Mercer’s world travels. A guided tour of the home tells the story of Mercer’s life, passions, and influence on Bucks County. A visit here is nice any time of the year, but we especially love it around the holidays when the mansion is fully decorated for Christmas.

Explore Mercer Museum

Boats, carriages, chairs, and other items hanging from the walls in a large room.

Built in 1916, the Mercer Museum is one of the unique Bucks County points of interest. Another of Henry Mercer’s creations, his eponymous museum is a concrete castle that displays a collection of over 50,000 pre-Industrial tools. From funeral carriages to pill bottles and lighting devices, the museum offers a unique look at the tools of life used in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries.

Visit Moravian Pottery and Tile Works

Large concrete building with a decorative tile roof.

The Moravian Pottery and Tile Works is the third Mercer attraction in Doylestown . It was constructed to produce handmade clay Moravian tiles made from Mercer’s designs. The tiles frequently depict Pennsylvania animals, trees, and flowers, and many feature graphic patterns or tell stories.

This National Historical Landmark is still a working museum. A tour here lets visitors learn about the tiles, which are still produced using Mercer’s original designs, and see them being made by artisans. To get hands-on, come for one of the Tuesday workshops that lets you make your own tiles.

Stroll downtown Doylestown

Large brick building occupying a corner spot in the center of Doylestown.

Downtown Doylestown is a top destination in the Philadelphia area. It’s known for its charming streets, historic buildings, and variety of shops and restaurants.

Local standouts include Siren Records, which has been the place to find music and records in town for over 30 years, and  Doylestown Bookshop , a welcoming, independent bookstore. Grab a beer at Geronimo Brewing, try the small plates at Honey , or sample farm-to-table goodness at Heirloom Doylestown.

Learn about history at the Bucks County Civil War Museum

Anyone who has been to Gettysburg knows the important role that Pennsylvania played in the Civil War. The Bucks County Civil War Museum gets even more detailed, looking at the contributions of Bucks County residents, especially the 104th Pennsylvania Volunteer “Ringgold” Regiment that originated in the area.

The Museum houses hundreds of artifacts, including maps, photos, flags, and works of art that tell the story of the War and offer a look at local life during wartime and its aftermath. Additionally, the library offers over 1500 research resources for people engaged in Civil War studies.

Visit Michener Art Museum

Red, branch-like sculptures in a sculpture garden outside an art museum.

One of the cultural cornerstones of Bucks County, the Michener Art Museum is a great place to spend an afternoon enjoying artwork from the Delaware Valley region. In its spacious galleries, visitors can enjoy the largest public collection of Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings along with temporary exhibits featuring photography, sculpture, and other works.

As a regional art museum , the Michener pays particular attention to showcasing art students and up-and-coming artists as well as established talents. It hosts a broad range of special events, including conversations with artists, lectures, classes, and performances, so there is always something new to experience in this special space. Don’t miss the outdoor sculpture garden, which is free to visit.

Enjoy Washington Crossing Historic Park

Exterior of a colonial stone building on a snowy day.

The night of Christmas 1776, George Washington led his battle-weary Revolutionary War army in a daring move crossing the Delaware River from Pennsylvania to New Jersey. The next morning the troops arrived in Trenton where they achieved an important victory and helped re-energize a war effort that had been flagging. Washington Crossing Historic Park is a 500-acre park that preserves the site where the crossing happened and fortunes began to turn.

The park includes restored colonial buildings such as the Thompson-Neely House and McConkey Ferry Inn alongside later structures that show how Pennsylvanians lived and worked in the 19th century. Visitors can also see Bowman’s Hill Tower, which provides panoramic views of the river valley. Scattered among the park grounds are memorials and graves of Revolutionary War soldiers. Regular tours cover different aspects of the park and its buildings.

Wander Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve

Stone hut in a lily pond.

One of the fun things to do in Bucks County outdoors is to visit the Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve. The Preserve has a variety of native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees that line its trails and meadows across the 134-acre area. The website for the Preserve highlights what’s in bloom in each season, so visitors always know what they can expect to see.

Walking around the Preserve, you’ll see water features, a creek, a pond, and physical structures like a stone arch bridge and log cabin—both of which date from 1933. It’s an excellent site for bird watching, and there are regular birding programs along with wildflower walks, workshops, and other educational offerings.

See the view from Bowman’s Hill Tower

View of treetops and the Delaware River in the fall.

One of the area’s most incredible views comes from the top of Bowman’s Hill Tower. From this 125-foot-tall tower, visitors can see up to 14 miles on a clear day, including the Delaware River and the surrounding countryside. It’s particularly impressive in the fall when you can have a bird’s-eye view of the Bucks County foliage.

An elevator takes you most of the way to the top, but there are 23 final stairs up a spiral staircase. (Note: the elevator is frequently out of service, so doublecheck before you go, if this is a deal breaker for you.)

Get outside at Lake Nockamixon

Trees with dark red leaves on the shore of a lake.

At the heart of Lake Nockamixon State Park is the lake itself. Spanning more than 1450 acres, Lake Nockamixon is popular for boating, fishing, and even more unexpected activities like windsurfing. Some areas near the lake close for the winter season, but some trails and picnicking and fishing areas remain open year-round, so it’s a great place to spend time outside , no matter what the season.

Visit Byers’ Choice Christmas Museum

Carved wooden figurines dressed in Christmas and winter clothing.

Known around the world, Byers Choice Carolers are a symbol of Christmas to many people. Over the last 50+ years, these distinctive wooden figurines have run the gamut of Christmas-related characters, and the line now includes Carolers for other holidays, too. At the Visitors Center and Christmas Museum in Chalfont , visitors can see many of the figures in Christmas scenes year-round and watch artisans at work handcrafting new pieces to love.

Try gourmet water ice at Yardley Ice House

Hand holding a cup of water ice beside a sign for Yardley Ice House.

Yardley Ice House is a destination for sweets lovers around greater Philadelphia. This water ice and ice cream shop is known for having some of the most creative flavors in the area and makes every local “best of” list you’ll find.

From roughly mid-March through early October, Yardley Ice House serves gourmet flavors like coconut cream pie, cherry Bordeaux, and raspberry truffle, along with weekly special additions. The menu also includes milkshakes, floats, sundaes, and other desserts. It’s cash only.

Go wine tasting at Bucks County wineries

Bucks County is home to 10 wineries that offer a variety of sweet fruit wines and dry, European-style wines like Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. Some—like Wycombe Vineyard and Winery—are on historic farms owned by families that have lived in Pennsylvania for generations. Others like the iconic Sand Castle Winery were founded by Europeans drawing on a long heritage of wine-making tradition. Check out these offerings or the other special spots on the Bucks County Wine Trail .

Enjoy Delaware Canal State Park

Bicyclist on a path beside a river.

At nearly 60 miles long, the towpath of Delaware Canal State Park connects historic towns, farms, and riverfront property spanning from Easton to Bristol. It’s the perfect place for runners, walkers, and bikers on a nice day.

The state park itself is 830 acres, crossing two counties. In addition to the towpath, there is a 50-acre pond and 11 river islands, which keep the scenery interesting. Depending on the time of year, there are opportunities for fishing, hiking, boating, and cross-country skiing. The restored Locktender’s House in New Hope has exhibits on the history of the canal locks, and the adjacent Lock 11 shows how boats moved through the waterway.

Stroll around New Hope

Merchandise outside a shop.

One of the top places to visit in Bucks County, the riverfront town of New Hope is filled with shops, restaurants, natural attractions, and beautiful river views. Shop along Main Street, grab lunch at the New Hope Ferry Market, and ride the antique coaches of the New Hope Railroad . Stroll the bridge across the Delaware River to explore the equally lovely Lambertville, New Jersey, on the other side.

Make a weekend of it and book a night at the historic Aaron Burr House, a cute bed and breakfast with a fascinating backstory—it’s the place Burr fled after killing Alexander Hamilton in their famous duel.

See a show at Bucks County Playhouse

First built in 1790, the Bucks County Playhouse began its journey as a theater in 1938. For decades, it was essentially the testing ground for Broadway—plays and actors debuted here in the summer, were workshopped, and moved on to the big leagues nearby in Manhattan.

The Playhouse hosted works by Neil Simon and was the site of Grace Kelly’s acting debut. Actors like Robert Redford, Angela Lansbury, and Dick van Dyke graced its stage. Bucks County Playhouse operates year-round, welcoming thousands of visitors to see its regular performances. It also has a restaurant with beautiful riverfront views.

See the historic stone houses

Stone building with white columns on the porch.

The county is full of many historic stone buildings built in the 1700s and early 1800s. Many of them have earned spots on the National Register of Historic Places thanks to their significance.

A driving tour connects the stone houses, or they can be seen individually. Some, like the Buckingham Friends Meeting House that dates from 1768, are open to the public. Others, like the London Purchase Farm that served as the headquarters for General Henry Knox and Captain Alexander Hamilton during the American Revolution, are private homes. If you’re hoping to actually visit one of the buildings, check its status before you go.

Visit Shady Brook Farm

Ice cream cone in front of a pumpkin sign.

A visit to Shady Brook Farm is one of the top things to do in Bucks County any time of the year. With a large farm market and garden center , visitors can find everything from mulch and flowers to vine-ripened tomatoes and turkey wraps. Don’t miss Uncle Dave’s Homemade Ice Cream, especially when the pumpkin flavor is available in the fall.

The special events are what really attract visitors to Shady Brook, one of the last historic working farms in the county. Tickets to their spectacular holiday light show are always in demand, kids love the pumpkin picking and hayrides , there is a meet-and-great with the Easter bunny in the spring, and much more. Pick-your-own apples, strawberries, and other fruits are also very popular in-season.

Tour the Pearl S. Buck House

Large stone house with Christmas wreaths on the windows.

The Pearl S. Buck House —a National Historic Landmark—is the former home of the Nobel- and Pulitzer Prize-winning author for whom it is named. The 1825 farmhouse is filled with Buck’s original furniture and possessions, and a tour here tells the story of her accomplishments and her dedication to philanthropic causes.

In addition to her distinguished writing career, Buck focused her efforts on bringing attention to causes that mattered to her. Foremost among them were women’s rights, civil rights, and adoption—with a special focus on children of mixed race who were considered “unadoptable” at the time. Features throughout the house tour ask visitors to reflect on the causes that matter to them and “what type of activist” they are.

During the holidays, the house is decorated with Christmas trees sponsored by local charities and community organizations, which gives them a platform to share their mission.

Visit the Garden of Reflection

Fountain with two streams of water shooting upward.

The Garden of Reflection in Yardley is Pennsylvania’s official 9/11 Memorial. It was built in honor of the 18 Bucks County residents who died in the terrorist attacks. Their families were instrumental in the memorial’s development.

The memorials that are part of the Garden of Reflection cover 2.5 acres and are surrounded by a 2-acre Oak Garden Arboretum set within the much larger Memorial Park. As a result, there is plenty of room to reflect and enjoy the space—in fact, that what it’s intended for.

In addition to the Memorial, the park is meant to be a vibrant, joy-filled space. It is often full of people walking their dogs, exercising, and having fun. There is a playground as well as a basketball court, volleyball nets, a sports field, and a community garden. The whole thing is meant to be full of life and life-affirming.

Explore the Underground Railroad sites

Statue of a woman beside a river.

Before the Civil War, Bucks County was an important location for people fleeing slavery and making their way further north. As a result, the area is home to many sites that were stops on the Underground Railroad—the secret network of places that provided safety and shelter to formerly enslaved people seeking freedom.

Some notable stops include the Buckingham Friends Meeting House (also mentioned above) whose members frequently hosted lectures by prominent abolitionists and the Continental Tavern , which was connected to other local buildings by an actual underground passage. The Newtown Theatre, which was an assembly hall in the 1800s, hosted many anti-slavery meetings, including speeches by noted abolitionists Lucretia Mott and Frederick Douglass. In Bristol, you’ll find a statue honoring Harriet Tubman, the Conductor of the Underground Railroad. Checking out these sites and others is an interesting way to learn about the county’s history.

21 of the Best Things to Do in Bucks County, PA

The best things to do in Bucks County, PA

If you’re looking for things to do in Bucks County, PA, you’ve come to the right place. Having spent many days traveling through its cities, small towns , and countryside, I’ve uncovered many great things to do in this eastern PA county. In fact, of the 67 counties in Pennsylvani a, Bucks County is one of my favorites to visit.

Located north of Philadelphia, Bucks County is one of the original counties of Pennsylvania, and it has a history that can be seen around every corner. However, the county isn’t just for history lovers. There are so many fantastic state parks, odd natural attractions, and cultural sites to keep the whole family busy.

Here a few of my favorite things to do in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Visiting Fonthill is the best thing to do in Doylestown, PA

Fonthill is a concrete castle built in the early 20th century on the outskirts of Doylestown by artist Henry Chapman Mercer. Fonthill was Chapman’s home, and he incorporated many of his famous Moravian tiles into when during construction.

The home is open for tours for those that want to see inside this amazing Pennsylvania castle.

Fonthill, along with the next two places on this list, make up what is known as the Mercer Mile. While there are many great things to do in Doylestown, the Mercer Mile is undoubtedly at the top of the list.

Moravian Pottery and Tile Works

The Moravian Pottery and Tile Works is one of my favorite things to do in Bucks County

Located steps from Fonthill, Mercer built his workshop: the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works . The architecture of this workshop was inspired by a Spanish monastery, but the design also had practical benefits for producing tiles.

The business continued producing tiles here until the early 1960s. Since then, it’s been open for tours with artisans continuing to craft these famous Moravian tiles in much the same way that Mercer did over 100 years ago.

Mercer Museum

Inside the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania

The Mercer Museum is the last of the three structures within the Mercer Mile in Doylestown. The Mercer Museum is another castle-like structure built by Mercer. This building was designed to house his collection of hand-powered tools from the 19th and 20th centuries.

This amazing collection is housed in an equally amazing setting, and you might feel like you are standing on the set of a Harry Potter film while exploring the museum.

Ringing Rocks County Park

Ringing Rocks County Park is one of my favorite things to do in Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Throughout all my travels in Pennsylvania, I don’t think I’ve come across a stranger natural attraction than Ringing Rocks County Park . Located in northern Bucks County, the rocks in the park’s boulder field ring like a bell when they are struck with a hammer. While it’s not the only ringing rock field in the county (there’s another in State Game Lands 157 ), it’s the most accessible.

The park is also home to High Falls, the tallest waterfall in Bucks County.

Washington Crossing Historic Park

Washington Crossing Historic Park in Bucks County, PA

One of the most famous scenes from the Revolutionary War is George Washington and his army crossing the Delaware River on Christmas day. Washington Crossing Historic Park preserves this historic site and the village that popped up afterward.

The park does an annual Christmas day reenactment, but it’s a great spot to visit throughout the year to learn more about this famous event.

While visiting the park, take a drive over to the nearby Bowman’s Hill Tower, which is part of the park, for fantastic views of the Delaware River Valley.

Covered Bridges

A covered bridge tour is one of my favorite things to do in Bucks County, PA

Throughout Bucks County, there are beautiful covered bridges . Visiting these dozen bridges offer the chance to not only see some of the county’s most historic structures but also to take in the rural settings that surround them.

The county’s covered bridges are almost all located in the northern half of the county and are great spots for a quick detour while you are out exploring the many things to do in Bucks County.

Pennsbury Manor

Pennsbury Manor is one of the best things to do in Lower Bucks County, PA

Pennsbury Manor is the rebuilt home of Pennsylvania’s founder: William Penn. Penn lived in the original home at the end of the 17th century, but by the start of the 19th century, the home was no more. However, in the 1930s, a project was undertaken to recreate Penn’s home along the Delaware River.

Today, visitors can still tour this stately manor and learn about Penn’s life and what it was like in the colony’s earliest days.

New Hope and Ivyland Railroad

New Hope and Ivyland Excursion Railroad in Bucks County, PA

The New Hope and Ivyland Railroad is an excursion train that takes riders on a trip through the countryside of Bucks County. The train departs from a train station on the edge of New Hope before taking visitors along track that was once part of the Reading Railroad.

Along the way, narration is provided to help riders better appreciate this part of eastern Pennsylvania.

Nockamixon State Park

Waterfall at Nockamixon State Park in Upper Bucks County, PA

Nockamixon State Park is a large park located in northern Bucks County. The park is home to the largest lake in southeastern PA, mountain biking trails, and a disc golf course. There are also many miles of hiking trails that are perfect for short loops or all day hikes.

One highlight of the park is the large dam overflow that creates one of the most impressive man-made waterfalls in all of Pennsylvania. A viewing area for this waterfall can be found on the southern edge of the park.

Michener Museum

The Michener Museum is a great thing for art lovers to do in Bucks County.

The Michener Museum is an art museum in Doylestown. One of my favorite things to do in Bucks County, this museum highlights the work of artists from the county. However, don’t like the local nature of this museum fool you. The quality of art at the Michener Museum is one par with some of the larger art museums in the region.

Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company

Newshaminy Creek Brewery in Bucks County, PA

Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company is one of the best breweries in the Philadelphia region and is one of my favorite Bucks County Breweries . Opened in 2010, Neshaminy Creek takes its name from the nearby creek that it draws its water from to make beer.

Neshaminy has won several awards at the Great American Beer Festival and visitors can sample their flagship beers and many harder-to-find varieties in their tasting room in Croydon.

Ralph Stover State Park

Ralph Stover State Park in Bucks County, PA

Ralph Stover State Park is a small park located in northeastern Bucks County. The park is best known for its 150 foot high cliffs that offer panoramic views of Tohickon Creek far below.

Visitors can hike along these cliffs and enjoy the spectacular views from here. Those that are a bit more adventure-oriented can try the 60 climbing routes that have been created along the cliffs or go white-water kayaking on the creek.

The park is also home to the only uncovered covered bridge in Pennsylvania.

Shopping in downtown New Hope

Shopping is one of my favorite things to do in New Hope ,PA

Without a doubt, New Hope is one of the most charming small towns in Pennsylvania. The community’s main streets are filled with great restaurants and many fantastic shops.

One of the most popular things to do in Bucks County is simply to walk the streets of New Hope and take time to go shopping in the town’s locally-owned stores .

Sesame Place

Sesame Place is one of the best things for kids to do in Bucks County

If you have kids that love Sesame Street, a visit to Sesame Place is a must. The only theme park in the world dedicated to Sesame Street, this park is perfect for the youngest members of the family. However, that doesn’t mean the rest of the family will be bored. In addition to many great attractions for young kids, the park also features a rollercoaster and a water park.

Sesame Place also has the distinction of being the first theme park in the world designated as a Certified Autism Center.

Bucks County Civil War Museum

The Bucks County Civil War Museum is one of the most underrated things to do in Doylestown, PA

The Bucks County Civil War Museum is one of the most overlooked things to do in Doylestown, PA. Located in a residential building on the outskirts of downtown, this museum showcases the story of those that lived in Bucks County and fought in the Civil War.

The museum features a great collection of uniforms, weapons, and other pieces of interest from the Civil War. There’s even a music box that was once owned by Mary Todd Lincoln.

Neshaminy State Park

Neshaminy State Park is a great outdoor thing to do in Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Located in the southeastern corner of Bucks County is Neshaminy State Park . While this park is more urban than the other parks in the county, Neshaminy State Park is still a great place to visit.

The park is home to several miles of trails, and the River Walk Trail along the Delaware River is quite beautiful. From the start of the trail, there are even fantastic views of Philadelphia’s skyline on clear days.

The park is also home to a popular swimming pool and marina.

Route 32 in northern Bucks County is my favorite road in PA

During my five years writing about Pennsylvania, I’ve driven tens of thousands of miles all throughout the state, and I don’t think there is a most beautiful road than Route 32 between New Hope and Kintnersville .

This 24-mile roadway features many twists and turns with centuries-old barns and farmhouse clinging to the edge of the roadway. Combine this with fantastic views of the Delaware River and, when water levels are high, many seasonal waterfalls along the roadway, and you have one of the best drives in PA.

Bucks County Playhouse

Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, PA

The Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope dubs itself “America’s Most Famous Playhouse.” Since 1939, this playhouse, which is located inside an 18th-century grist mill, has been playing host to great shows and some of the greatest actors of past decades.

Famous stars to have graced its stage include Grace Kelly, Dick Van Dyke, Liza Minelli, and Robert Redford.

Today, the playhouse still showcases fantastic shows that are sure to delight, and you never know what future stars you might find performing there.

Delaware Canal State Park

Things to do in Bucks County: Delaware Canal State Park

Delaware Canal State Park is a 60-mile long state park that is primarily in Bucks County. The park follows the remains of the Delaware Canal that once ran along the Delaware River. Today, the park extends from Easton in the north to Bristol in the south.

The main highlight of the park is the bike path that runs adjacent to the canal. Those looking for a great walk or bike ride in PA are sure to enjoy this great trail.

Pearl S. Buck House

The Pearl S Buck House in Perkasie PA

Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck spent many years living in an early 18th-century farmhouse in Bucks County. Today, her home, known as Green Hills Farm or the Pearl S. Buck House , in Perkasie is open for tours for those that want to learn more about her life, career, and legacy.

Many of Buck’s personal belongings can be seen in the home, including the typewriter on which some of her books were written.

Fans of the author can also visit her nearby gravesite on the grounds.

Tyler State Park

Tyler State Park is a great place to visit in Bucks County, PA

Located south of Doylestown, Tyler State Park is another great park in Bucks County. This state park is centered around Neshaminy Creek and features 25 miles of hiking trails and a disc golf course.

Another highlight of the park is its covered bridge. Schofield Ford Covered Bridge crosses the creek in the middle of the park and was rebuilt after being destroyed by arson in the early 1990s. It is the longest covered bridge in Bucks County.

6 thoughts on “21 of the Best Things to Do in Bucks County, PA”

I am a Bucks County native and have known, visited and loved all but 2 of your “21” places to visit in Bucks all my life. (Sesame Place and Neshaminy Brewing Co. being those 2).

But you need to make a correction: Your “tallest waterfall in Bucks County” In Stover Park is misleading, for 2 reasons: 1) It seldom runs w/ water anymore; and 2) even when there is a trickle of water coming over, the little cliff is not very tall at all – maybe 15 feet or so. I wouldn’t want people to come to the park to see this “waterfall” and be disappointed!

Thanks for your great website! Sincerely, Marilyn Arbor

The waterfall isn’t in Stover Park. It’s in Ringing Rocks County Park. The article that is linked from the piece notes that it’s seasonal, as many waterfalls are, but it does flow after a nice rain and isn’t that hard to catch flowing. It does completely dry up when water levels are low, though.

As for the height, many people will hike miles just to see a waterfall that high. This is only about 5-10 minutes. Even if the waterfall were dry, Ringing Rocks is a worthwhile destination, so it’s not a wasted trip at all.

HI Jim Great article about Bucks County. I was born and raised in Bristol Borough!!! And still living here, right on the Delaware River! Have been to most of the places, that were mentioned in your article. Bristol was founded in 1681, one of the oldest towns in Pa. We have a **HISTORIC BRISTOL DAY** every October!!! You may enjoy it Jim!!! Thank You Dave

We lived in Newtown for 11 years and loved it. The Brick Hotel is where my daughter’s Rehearsal dinner was held and she was married in the old St. Andrews Catholic Church on Main Street in Newtown. Two of my sons worked at the Brick Hotel as waiters also. Newtown is a jewel in the heart of Bucks County.

What about Bowman’s Tower?

That’s on the list as part of the Washington Crossing Historic Park since it’s apart of that site.

Washington-Crossing

Drive along River Road north from Interstate 95 to Washington Crossing. Here, General George Washington and his men crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776, to launch a surprise attack on the British troops in Trenton, turning the tide of the Revolution in America’s favor. Today, Washington Crossing Historic Park helps visitors understand the importance of that night and the days that followed.

Doyelstown is home to the Mercer Mile which is comprised of three concrete buildings erected by Henry Chapman Mercer: the Mercer Museum, Fonthill Castle and Moravian Pottery & Tile Works. The downtown area has an array of independent shops including the Doylestown Bookshop and is home to the County Theatre, an art-deco theater dating to the 1930s that specializes in art, independent and foreign films. Or, if you’d prefer to chat with friends over a brew and pub fare, pay a visit to Doylestown Brewing Company. They have 10 beers on tap, local wine and an always changing, seasonal food menu.

Founded as a Quaker settlement in the 18th century, Quakertown is known as the “Heart of Upper Bucks County.” The town’s downtown area is full of activity and is home to the annual Arts Alive festival, which brings artists, craftspeople and musicians for a day of fun along Broad Street every May. The town is also home to Liberty Hall, a historic property that once housed the Liberty Bell as it was carried north to safety during the Revolutionary War.

What to do: Autumn Alive!, October 17. For 16 years, Autumn Alive! has been a seasonal favorite for every member of the family. And with music, games, prizes, crafts, beer tasting and a pet parade (you can bring along your pooch!), it’s no wonder it’s garnered such a fan base. 312 West Broad Street, Quakertown.

Bristol was one of the earliest European settlements in Pennsylvania, and much of Bristol’s original 18th-century architecture has been preserved. Bristol’s waterfront has become a haven for the arts, home to Bristol Riverside Theatre, a 300-seat performance venue that hosts plays and live performances throughout the year. Make a night out of it by having a delicious dinner before or after at King George Inn. Bristol is also residence to Margaret R. What to do: 39th Annual Historic Bristol Day. For tons of fall fun all in one place, celebrate Bristol at this exciting street fair where guests can peruse arts and craft vendors, food vendors, entertainers and a car show, or bring along little ones for a variety of children's games. Top 11 Things to Do in Bucks County, Pennsylvania

visit bucks county photos

About an hour north of Philadelphia, quiet Bucks County offers five mandatory offerings: farm-fresh, beautifully prepared food, cozy lodging, eclectic shopping, breathtaking scenery (prime for outdoorsy activities), and deep-rooted history—with a big dash of culture. An expansive 622 miles square and edged by the Delaware River, its two main towns, New Hope and Doylestown, have all the comforts you need in a manageable size. Head out on its pastoral lanes, and you’ll come across covered bridges, wineries, rambling farmhouses, grazing horses, woodsy parks, and glimmering lakes. This is a captivating place to come for a weekend getaway—and dream of staying forever.

Visit Mercer Mile

One of Doylestown’s most eccentric characters was archaeologist Henry Chapman Mercer, responsible for three of its most fascinating sites. The Harvard-educated millionaire and arts-and-crafts advocate devoted the late 19th and early 20th centuries to preserving preindustrial tools of the past. As such, he built the six-story, concrete Mercer Museum and filled it to the gills (even hanging from the ceilings and walls) with wacky, intriguing odes to the past, including a gallows, vintage dental equipment, Conestoga wagons, a whaleboat, and cigar store figures. Mercer lived a mile away in Fonthill Castle , a crazy mix of medieval, gothic, and byzantine styles that he designed himself—and built without blueprints (explaining the dead-ends and uneven stairs). Just like the museum, it’s all poured-in-place concrete—even some of the built-in furniture pieces are concrete—and maybe not the warmest abode in town. That said, it’s a showplace for his tiles, both from around the world as well as those made in his own kilns. Mercer founded the nearby Moravian Pottery & Tile Works, which still reissues handmade tiles and offers tours that delve into the factory’s tile production.

See Where Washington Crossed the Icy Delaware

Courtesy of Washington Crossing Historic Park

You probably know the iconic scene of General George Washington crossing the ice-choked Delaware River on the cold Christmas night of 1776, thanks to Emanuel Leutze’s iconic painting, which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The fascinating story of how that crossing was achieved—including 2,400 of his Continental army, cannon, horses, and wagons—and how it resulted in a victory that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War, is told at Washington Crossing Historic Park. Three main sites have been preserved in two different sections. The troops encamped for three weeks in the park’s upper section, about 2.5 miles south of New Hope. Officers resided in the Thompson-Neely Farmstead here, with soldiers camping on the property’s frozen fields. Nearby, the Thompson-Neely Grist Mill provided much-needed flour to hungry troops. The actual crossing site, 5 miles farther south, has a visitor center with exhibits—and panoramic views of the fabled river. Here, too, a barn holds replicas of the Durham boats used to make the crossing, as well as the McConkey’s Ferry Inn, where Washington and his troops enjoyed Christmas dinner.

Bike or Hike Through Nature

Bucks County’s bucolic rolling hills harbor a collection of parks offering idyllic nature escapes. In what may be the biggest coup for residents and visitors alike is Delaware Canal State Park , which preserves a historic, 60-mile-long towpath that wanders past islands, pocket woods, historic buildings, and small towns. Hop on a portion to stroll, bike, or run along the riffling river. At Tyler State Park in Newtown, take to the trails by bike, hiking boot, or horse to explore woods and historic farmland. Its various sections are divided by Neshaminy Creek. And Core Creek Park , in Middletown Township, has lakeside picnic areas, canoeing and hiking on Lake Luxembourg, and biking and hiking on woodsy trails. Other notables include Peace Valley Park , Nockamixon State Park , and Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, with nearly 1,000 native plants, a meadow, a pond, and a creek. You can also hike the woodsy, trail-laced grounds of Fonthill Castle.

Browse Antiques and Craft Shops in New Hope

Just four streets comprise the little town of New Hope on the Delaware. Still, here you’ll find an abundance of shops occupying historic buildings that purvey all kinds of fun, eclectic fare: antiques, handcrafted products, stone jewelry, leather hats, hand-made porcelain bowls, meticulously designed drawer pulls, natural jerky, handcrafted bath salts, and the list goes on. Just the names themselves are enticing: Love Saves the Day (collectibles), Cockamamie’s (antiques), and Exquisite Earth (jewelry), for example. Another option is Peddler’s Village , about 5 miles west of New Hope, where 65-plus craft and gift shops sit among landscaped gardens and brick pathways. It’s especially fun when it’s all decked out during the holidays.

Take a Self-Guided Covered Bridge Driving Tour

There’s something exceedingly nostalgic about covered bridges, and in Bucks County, you’ll find 12 of these historic structures that will zip you back to another time. Fifty covered bridges once sprinkled the county, with the last one being built in 1875, part of the trading network to transport goods produced by local mills. Today, Visit Bucks County has put together two self-guided driving tours , a 58.2-mile one focusing on the county’s Eastern Half, and the other, a 37.9-mile loop showcasing the Western Half. Each bridge is special in its own right, but Uhlerstown Covered Bridge, with windows on both sides, is the only one in the county that crosses the Delaware Canal; and Loux Covered Bridge is uniquely painted white. Van Sandt Covered Bridge is an easy-access one located just south of New Hope.

Attend a World-Class Play at Bucks County Playhouse

This down-home theater opened in 1939 in a historic grist mill and is always a fun evening out. It’s far from glitzy, but know that this isn’t just any old small-town theater. Future star actors cut their teeth on its esteemed stage—Grace Kelly, Walter Matthau, Dick Van Dyke, Robert Redford, Rob Reiner, Alan Alda, Liza Minnelli, John Lithgow, and so many more. Also, plays hoping for Broadway are tested out here first, with one of the most famous being Neil Simon’s "Barefoot in the Park" in 1963.

Check Out Underground Railroad Stops

Magicpiano / Wikimedia Commons

Enslaved individuals fleeing north toward freedom before the Civil War found shelter in several hidden locations in Bucks County, including churches, taverns, and private farms. Today you can visit some of these sites, including an African Methodist Episcopal church in Bensalem that served as a safe station; the immaculately restored Continental Tavern , which offers tavern fare; and the 1780 Wedgwood Inn in New Hope, where a network of underground tunnels hides beneath a hatch in the property’s gazebo. Two driving tours organized by Visit Bucks County—one in Upper and Central Bucks County, and the other in Lower Bucks County—link the most interesting sites.

Sip Your Way Through the County

Every good destination has its share of wineries and breweries, and Bucks County is no exception. The Bucks County Wine Trail links eight wineries, offering tasting experiences, beautiful settings, and special events; you can drive yourself (responsibly) or arrange a driver—or target one or two. Family-owned Buckingham Valley Vineyards and Winery , in Buckingham, is one of the state’s oldest farm wineries (founded in 1966) and is the county’s only winery producing Methode Champenoise sparkling wine; while Rose Bank Winery , in Newtown, sits on land once owned by William Penn and includes a 1719 stone manor house and 1835 barn. The Bucks County Ale Trail connects more than 20 breweries, each producing unique craft brews; most offer food as well. For starters: Doylestown Brewing Company has been brewing for more than 70 years, with its flagship RS Lager based on an old PA lager dating from the late 1800s; while Vault Brewing Company in Yardley, housed in a 19th-century bank, has a rotational on-tap selection that uses unexpected seasonal ingredients.

Pair Dinner with Delaware River Views

Courtesy of Stella

Local restaurants reap the benefits of Bucks County’s rural location—with the freshest products on hand to whip into tantalizing dishes. Add a panoramic view of the Delaware River, and you’ve found an idyllic combo—and the options are plentiful. The Yardley Inn has porch seating on which to enjoy contemporary comfort food. Both intimate Nektar Wine Bar and chef Jose Garces’ Stella , both in New Hope, serve small dishes to share, while Francisco’s on the River in Washington Crossing features Mediterranean and Italian eats. And if you don’t need a river with your fine dining, head to the Restaurant at Barley Sheaf Farm for award-winning seasonal fare overlooking flowery gardens.

Admire Local Art

It’s no surprise that this exceedingly picturesque county has long been an artist magnet. You’ll find the works of local artists—much of it depicting Bucks County scenes—hanging in inns and restaurants and being sold in galleries throughout the county. Though if there’s one place to see the most stellar works, head to the Michener Art Museum , which displays a small but enviable collection of Pennsylvania Impressionists (Edward Redfield, Daniel Garber, Fran Coppedge), a fountain-graced sculpture garden, as well as a serene room designed by local furniture maker George Nakashima. The museum is named after James Michener, the Pulitzer-Prize-award-winning novelist who grew up in Doylestown. When the town set about opening an art museum in 1988, he lent it his name. One room near the entrance is dedicated to Michener and includes artifacts, including his old typewriter. The museum occupies the old county prison, and while the interior is completely modern and state of the art, the old stone walls surrounding it add to the ambiance.

Sleep In an Enchanting Inn

Courtesy of River House at Odette's

One of the reasons Bucks County is such an ideal getaway is its wealth of beautifully tended inns, B&Bs, and hotels. Many occupy historic houses, including Pineapple Hill Inn B&B just south of New Hope. Built as a stagecoach stop in 1812, the genteel manor house sits on 5 acres of landscaped grounds and includes a yummy breakfast. And then there’s the brand-new River House at Odette’s in New Hope, a modern boutique hotel filled with local art, lots of warm wood and river rock, and unobstructed Delaware River. Inspired by Odette Myrtil, a French-American actress who established a cabaret restaurant on the spot, River House artfully displays artifacts from the original building and presents live cabaret performances in the two-story piano lounge. Playwright George S. Kaufman owned the 1740 Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm in Holicong, now a luxury hotel, restaurant, and spa on 100 acres.

Need to visit PA DMV? Here's how to avoid a line in Bucks County

When is the best time to visit a Pennsylvania Driver's License or Photo License Center?

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation just let the word out: Between 8:15 and 9 a.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

If you go on a Saturday because it's your day off from work or school, be prepared to wait in line. Also, the first and last days of the month are extra busy, PennDOT notes.

The Driver License Centers serve a variety of people including teens wanting to learn how to drive, to out-of-staters who have moved to Pennsylvania and have two months to get their new driver's license, to foreigners living in the United States on extended visas, who are eligible for a license.

The Driver's License Center on Neshaminy Boulevard in Trevose handled a total of 135,649 visitors for licensing and photo services in 2023, according to PennDOT statistics provided by spokesman Brandon Glorioso. On days when they are especially crowded, the lines can be long.

Another idea ― head to the less crowded Driver's License Center on North Main Street in Dublin in Central Bucks, which handled 87,989 service requests last year, the statistics showed.

On a recent Saturday when the line at the Trevose center queued down the shopping center block, it was easy to walk in at the Dublin center, where about a dozen people were in line.

No appointment necessary at PennDOT driving centers

The centers are open 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

"The standard is to serve our customers in 30 minutes or less. All services are walk-in; no appointment is necessary except for a driver skills test," said Glorioso in an email.

If you don't need to apply for a license but just need to have your license renewed, apply online and have an updated photo taken at a Photo License Center, like the one at 516 N. Oxford Valley Road in Middletown.

One visitor last year described it in a review as "a secret gem." She was able to get her new license quickly. Like the Driver License centers, the Photo Center is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Wherever you go, have the last four digits of your Social Security number for identification purposes, and if you are applying for a REAL ID, bring the required identification documents with you.

Applying for Real ID in Pennsylvania

REAL ID is a federal program enacted by Congress in 2005 and supervised by the Department of Homeland Security to make sure that "minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards" are being followed, and that people have identification cards that meet these standards when boarding commercial flights in the United States and entering federal facilities.

The deadline for enforcement was delayed due to COVID but now is May 7, 2025.

To apply for REAL ID, residents in Pennsylvania need to go to a Driver's License Center and bring their original or certified birth certificate or a valid United States passport, a Social Security card or other legal form showing their name and full Social Security number, two forms of identification showing their name and address and , if their name has been changed, documentation showing the change, like "a certified marriage certificate, court order, or adoption decree issued by your county's family court," PennDOT states.

PennDOT states that non-United States residents who are lawfully in the country and want a REAL ID driver's license or identification card are required to bring other documents listed on the website : https://www.dmv.pa.gov/REALID/Pages/REAL-ID-Non-U.S.Citizens.aspx

In receiving the REAL ID certification, a Pennsylvanian's driver's license will be stamped with a gold star in the right corner, showing the person has the REAL ID verification. The verification is renewed when the person's driver's license is up for renewal.

By STEVE MEGARGEE AP Sports Writer

MILWAUKEE — The Clippers had a fourth-quarter lead and the Milwaukee Bucks did not have superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the visitors could not hold on.

Damian Lillard scored 41 points and the Bucks overcame the absence of their two-time league MVP to rally past the Clippers, 113-106, on Monday night for their sixth consecutive victory.

Antetokounmpo missed his third game of the season as he deals with left Achilles tendinitis. The only other times he sat out were a Nov. 15 win at Toronto with a strained right calf and a Jan. 17 loss at Cleveland with a bruised right shoulder.

Bucks coach Doc Rivers said before the game that the Achilles issue had been “on and off for the last two or three games.”

Milwaukee is hot enough right now to win even without its eight-time All-Star.

The Bucks are unbeaten since the All-Star break as they get ready to begin a four-game trip to California that starts Wednesday at Golden State and includes a rematch with the Clippers on Sunday. It’s an impressive turnaround for a team that entered the break 3-7 in new coach Doc Rivers’ first 10 games.

The Bucks won without Antetokounmpo on Monday just as they’ve been winning without three-time All-Star Khris Middleton, who missed an 11th straight game with a sprained left ankle.

“Nobody talked about who wasn’t playing before the game,” Lillard said. “It was literally like we were in the locker room, Doc didn’t come in there and say, ‘All right, Giannis is out. Khris is out.’ It was like, we went in there, we talked about the scouting report and what we needed to do to win the game, and that was it. I think that just shows what’s expected, the standard that we’re starting to have and who we’re becoming as a team.”

James Harden and Paul George scored 29 points each for the Clippers, who ran out of gas down the stretch while playing one night after an 89-88 victory at Minnesota. Kawhi Leonard added 16 points.

The Bucks trailed by 13 in the last minute of the third period but won by outscoring the Clippers 23-10 over the final five minutes.

“When they went to that zone, I think we got a little jump shot-happy rather than keep attacking the basket and getting into the paint,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “I think we were in the bonus pretty early in the fourth quarter. They did a good job of going to the zone, and then we didn’t handle it well.”

Bobby Portis scored 14 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and finished with a season-high 16 rebounds. He became the first NBA player this season to have at least 25 points and 15 rebounds while coming off the bench.

“Guys needed to step up in their roles,” Portis said. “I just feel like it was one of those times for me just to step up and be a little more aggressive than I probably was before.”

Patrick Beverley added 12 points and sparked the winning rally. His 3-pointer tied the game at 96 with 4:33 left.

On the Clippers’ ensuing possession, Beverley stole the ball to set up Lillard’s driving layup with 4:10 remaining that gave the Bucks their first lead since the opening period.

After Brook Lopez blocked Leonard’s driving layup attempt, A.J. Green hit a deep 3-pointer to make it 101-96. Portis scored the last four points of the 15-0 surge that put the Bucks ahead for good.

The Clippers got the lead down to five with 1:31 left, but Portis scored five straight points and the Bucks didn’t look back.

“I think it just shows who we’re becoming,” Lillard said.

Chicago bulls | chicago bulls fall apart in chippy 16-point loss to the milwaukee bucks: ‘we let our frustrations get the best of us’.

The Chicago Bulls boiled over in the second half of a 113-97 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night, giving up a slew of technical and flagrant fouls as they stumbled into a 16-point blowout.

It was always going to be a contentious game. The United Center was sold out for a late-night special, including a thunderous contingent of Milwaukee Bucks fans. And the opposing roster was filled with familiar faces — former Bulls Patrick Beverley and Bobby Portis — who were guaranteed to rile up fans and players.

Coach Billy Donovan said he could feel the discontent brewing in the first quarter, cautioning officials to get the physicality under control to avoid unnecessary fouls. But the game remained tense until the final 31 seconds of the third quarter, when the Bulls lost control — and, in the process, the game.

The meltdown started when DeMar DeRozan took offense to Portis staring him down after a play. It was a brief moment but it was enough to prompt an immediate response from DeRozan, who had been vocal on a chippy night.

DeRozan went at Portis, ramming into the forward in the open court. The foul earned a flagrant-1 violation — and an ensuing argument from DeRozan resulted in a technical foul.

“As long as I play the game, I’m big on respect,” DeRozan said . “I don’t play the whole games, staring down somebody, trying to disrespect nobody. I’m all about competing, doing your thing, but if I feel anything is disrespectful in any type of way, I don’t accept that.

“I wouldn’t do that to nobody else. It’s just my respect of the game.”

The break between quarters could have cooled things off. Instead, the tension escalated in the ensuing three minutes of game time.

Alex Caruso picked up a technical foul for arguing with the referees within the first 70 seconds of the fourth quarter. And 90 seconds later, Nikola Vučević took out his frustration on A.J. Green, swinging his hands into the Bucks guard as he attempted a layup, earning a flagrant-2 foul and an ejection.

At that point, it was over for the Bulls. They already were struggling against the staggering size of the Bucks, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez. With Vučević out of commission, the Bulls had little left to slow the onslaught in the paint .

Antetokounmpo led all scorers with 46 points on 16-for-22 shooting. He added 16 rebounds and six assists.

“It was just a little frustration,” Vučević said. “Not just the no-calls, just built up from us having a little bit of a rough game. That was just tough. We felt like we were doing some pretty good things. We just let our frustrations get the best of us for a little bit.”

Here are three takeaways from the loss.

1. Patrick Beverley acts as an instigator

Few things are more consistent than Beverley’s presence at the start and end of a scuffle on the court.

The Chicago native and Marshall alumnus helped spark frustrations in the second half, draping himself over DeRozan on defense and chirping at opponents during every dead ball.

And he relished in the aftermath of the technicals and ejection, scoring eight consecutive points in the fourth quarter before turning to Bulls fans to shout “This is my city” as he walked back to the Bucks bench. Beverley clapped loudly at every foul called against the Bulls and hit the “too small” gesture on rookie Julian Phillips on back-to-back plays.

“We know him,” DeRozan said after the loss. “That’s Pat. We let our own frustration take over everything else. It kind of seemed like we was directing it towards one person specifically on their team and we just thought we weren’t getting good calls.”

2. Shooting remains stagnant

The Bulls aren’t much of a 3-point-shooting team, but improvements in consistency from players such as Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu have helped to close the margins on offense this season. Those improvements have stalled, however, as the Bulls struggle through a shooting slump after the All-Star break.

Friday’s performance was a slight step forward as the Bulls went 11-for-27 from 3-point range; White was 2-for-5 and Caruso 3-for-6. But the Bulls are still performing below their pre-All-Star average of 11.8 makes from 3-point range per game.

3. A diminished milestone

It was mostly a night to forget for DeRozan, who showed signs of wear-and-tear from playing more minutes than any other player in the NBA this season besides White. DeRozan finished with 12 points and nine assists, sitting for most of the fourth quarter for some much-needed rest.

But the game also included a small piece of history for DeRozan, who became the 35th player in NBA history to reach 23,000 career points. He is one of only six active players to reach the milestone.

Take a walk in Zariadye park: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow after visiting Red Square

Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. From its heights, you can see the red walls of the Kremlin. But, the most impressive point of view is the platform which overlooks the Moskva river. A must see! And clearly one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

  • Open 24 hours a day
  • Good to know! Park Zaryadye is also a place to visit in Moscow in winter. Find out more here: What to do in Moscow in winter?

Visit the Moscow Kremlin

Visit Kremlin is on top of things to do in Moscow. A place of power for centuries, the Kremlin then shows us a whole different image when viewed from the inside. If you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, the Kremlin is certainly one of the must-see places in Moscow.

  • Opening hours : Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursday.
  • See our blog post about visiting the Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
  • Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
  • Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

  • Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

  • How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!

VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

Visit

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.

What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days

If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.

Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

What to see in Moscow in one day

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉

Things to do Moscow blog

In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?

What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?

Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.

Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery

Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!

  • Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
  • Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
  • Entry tickets. 500 RUB.

Museum to see

Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and Cézanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
  • Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
  • Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.

Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!

  • Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
  • Prices. 2200 RUB per person
  • Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!

1 Dead In Apartment Building Fire In Lower Bucks: Coroner

MORRISVILLE, PA —A resident died in a fire at a 2-story apartment building early Saturday morning, authorities said.

The Bucks County Coroner's Office said that a person was killed in the fire at a 2-story apartment building on Plaza Boulevard.

The coroner's office did not provide information about the gender or identity of the victim pending autopsy results.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Morrisville Fire Marshal.

The Morrisville Fire Company said it responded to the apartment building fire just before 6 a.m. Saturday, receiving assistance from the Falls Township Fire Company No. 1 and the Levittown Fire Company No. 2.

Morrisville's fire chief arrived to find a well-advanced fire, burning through the roof of the two-story apartment building. Engine 98 arrived shortly after and went into service.

It took fire crews four hours to bring the blaze under control.

"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic event," the Morrisville Fire Company posted on Facebook.

The Falls Township Fire Company No. 1 also extended its condolences in a Facebook post.

The American Red Cross was at the scene to assist residents who were displaced by the blaze.

  • Capturing the Kremlin and central Moscow: the higher, the better

visit bucks county photos

Of course, pictures of the Kremlin shot from the Red Square are no doubt iconic and must-have, but they are taken by thousands of tourists every day and can hardly make a wow-effect on your friends on Instagram and other social networks.

Another problem with shooting from Red Square is that the photos do not fully represent the scale of the medieval fortress of Kremlin. So, you need to make some steps further and higher to catch the right shot. You’ll be surprised by the fact that the panoramic views of the Kremlin are pretty easy to get. We have four hints for you: Zaryadie, Ritz Carlton, Patriarch bridge, and Radisson riverboat.

If you want to not only make beautiful photos but also to learn something interesting about the history of Russia, we recommend an individual tour of the Kremlin. You can order it online here .

visit bucks county photos

First, go to Zaryadye, which is located right next to the Red Square, behind the St Basil’s Cathedral, on the closest Moscow river bank. The most impressive views over the Kremlin are unfolded from the so-called Flying bridge of Zaryadye and Glass Dome building in the back part of the park.

Zaryadye is the new place of attraction in Moscow. It’s a landscape park, opened in September 2017 by the Moscow government on the hill where the giant soviet hotel ‘Rossiya’ located before its demolition in the early 2000-s. As a bonus, you’ll get an incredible view over one of Stalin’s skyscrapers, located on the opposite bank of Moscow river — the so-called Vysotka at Kotelnicheskaya, used as a residence of many Russian famous people and officials.

  • The roof of the Ritz Carlton Hotel

This option is ok only in case if you’re ready to pay the average bar bill of over 2500 rubles (about $40). Visit the O2 Lounge Bar on the roof of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, where all the global celebrities take their Moscow pictures, from Angelina Jolie to Robert Downey Jr.

But such photo investments seem to pay off immediately. The deck of the bar makes an excellent panorama point for the Kremlin walls and towers, the Historical Museum, the Great Kremlin Palace, and the Kremlin cathedrals. All these landmarks are not too far away, which makes them perfectly recognizable, even in the background.

  • The Radisson riverboat

visit bucks county photos

This hint will be useful in case you’re traveling to Moscow in the cold season. River transportation in Moscow doesn't stop in winter. Many enclosed and heated tourist yachts with panoramic windows and ice-breaking equipment can be found in the Moscow River. For instance, one of the most recognizable is the flotilla Radisson.

Their route goes past all the main sights of pre-revolutionary and Soviet Moscow – from Stalin's skyscrapers (Ukraina hotel and Vysotka at Kotelnicheskaya) to the Kremlin and the Novodevichy Convent. It is possible to go out to the open deck and take photos of you and your family or friends against a backdrop of the city’s lights and their reflection in the river. The cruise lasts 2.5 hours. You can book a tour with a car roundtrip transfer from your hotel to the pier and back: book online here

  • Patriarch bridge

visit bucks county photos

The bridge is located further from the Kremlin, than Zaryadye or Ritz Carlton, so the Kremlin walls on your photos will look smaller. The brighter side of walking through the bridge is that you can do more fabulous pics of the Moscow river and city center landscapes. The Moscow river and the pretty recognizable giant statue of Peter the Great are ideally viewed from the bridge. Be prepared that it’s a famous and popular pedestrian area for tourists all over the world so the bridge may be crowded.

Also, the bridge is a part of a long promenade which leads from the Christ the Saviour Cathedral through the Balchug island to the opposite bank of the Moscow River, where another pedestrian area — Museon embankment — is ready to joy you with its cafes, cozy lawns and impressive views over the river flow, ducks and boats.

  • Moscow City

visit bucks county photos

The best spot to shoot the famous Moscow business downtown is located on the Taras Shevchenko embankment. To get there you need to come to the metro stations Vystavochnaya or Delovoi Tsentr, then go to the Bagration bridge (use the metro navigation, the path is tricky), cross the bridge — and voilà! You’ve reached the best spot for shooting, posing, sending selfies, and Instagramming.

  • Ponds and orangeries

visit bucks county photos

There are two ponds in Moscow, that deserve your attention in summer: the Chistye ponds (actually there is only one pond, but it’s worth it) and the pond in Gorky Park, which is full of small boats and catamarans. Both lakes are lost between the green alleys and are drowning in all the shades of green. Those are the perfect spots to catch the moment of peace amid the madness of big city life.
